e’ve had plenty of Facebook chatter on the story we ran in Wednesday’s paper about racist rants in parking lots.

The story featured two individuals (one of Filipino the other Chinese descent), who claimed they were victims of racist tirades.

Parking in a crowded shopping centre rarely brings out the best in any of us, but these situations escalated into freak outs.

I should note that, in both cases, the story was only told from one side. In one of the incidents, the presumed “offender” phoned the News after he read the story to say that plenty of racial slurs were thrown both ways, and he wasn’t the one who started it.

Regardless, the point of the story was not to arbitrate on the specifics, but to ask more generally if this kind of overt racial targeting is on the rise. On our Facebook page, many said yes, but it goes both ways. We had posts about Caucasians not being served at a Chinese restaurant or not feeling welcome at a Chinese mall. However, another noted: “White people complaining about racial discrimination = men complaining about rape.”

(I assume meaning the numbers are heavily weighted to one side.)

But the post that stuck out for me was by Richard Vetter who wrote: “The person potentially responsible for racism stares back at me in the mirror every morning. I then try to greet each person I meet with the goal of seeking common ground and keeping that dark side of me in check.”

Also in Wednesday’s paper, we had a follow-up to an earlier story about a woman and her 51-year-old son who lost their HandyDART ride because her son had the wrong kind of wheelchair for the bus.

Following that story, I received a phone call from a woman who wanted to donate $100 to help the family buy a new wheelchair. “We’ve gotta do something,” she told me. “And I’m sure there are others who want to help.”

And she was right.

Shortly after, another woman called, offering the family a free electric scooter.

Point being, we have it in us to do the right thing, to show compassion, to care for a stranger. The difference is whether we choose to see that stranger as “us” or “them.”

It’s never okay to freak out on someone in a parking lot, but the bigger challenge for many of us is to look in the mirror until, as Vetter says, we find that common ground.

Racism is nothing new, but it does ebb and flow. We have a role to play in that.

Last summer, we ran a letter following a story about a racist flyer circulating through Steveston. The letter writer challenged every one of us to pause, look and smile at a stranger — just take that minute to acknowledge their humanity. Let’s take up that challenge, and let’s never underestimate the big impact of small gestures.

Bedside Wills now acceptable

In the case of Re Bach Estate (reasons released this week), the deceased died in 2014. The evening before he died, he signed a half-page Will, leaving his Estate to one of his sisters. One of the witnesses was the sister’s husband. A stepson, now disinherited but a beneficiary under the deceased’s previous Will, challenged the deceased’s capacity.

The Court had two issues to consider. The first was the deceased’s capacity, and there was no doubt for the Court that the deceased had capacity when signing the Will, though he died only several hours after. The second issue was that a witness was the spouse of the beneficiary.

Under old B.C. law, this would have invalidated the Will. But under the Wills Estates and Succession Act, Section 43 allows a Court to rectify that mistake if the Court is satisfied that the Will reflects the Will Maker’s wishes. This case is the first in B.C. to decide the issue, but the Court held that the evidence established that the deceased’s wishes were reflected in the Will, and so it was upheld.

I think that normally, the deceased’s Will would not have been made so fast, but because the deceased’s health deteriorated so quickly, the Will had to be done without preparation (it was actually handwritten). The new law in B.C., which emphasizes intention (of the Will maker) rather than the form of the document, is a very significant change in our law!

Fear of gambling at seniors centre

Dear Editor, I am a senior and currently a member of the Minoru Place Seniors’ Centre. For several years, I have enjoyed playing cards (whist, euchre and cribbage) at the centre with other members, who I now consider friends.

For us, playing cards is an important part of our weekly social activity; it gets us out of our homes/apartments and brings us together for an afternoon or evening of self-made enjoyment.

In the past, with the centre’s full knowledge, we have been able to pay a small amount at the commencement of an afternoon or evening of cards (25 cents or $1 or $2 per member).

It is simply a token payment for playing cards in the hopes of a small reward and, more importantly, an acknowledgement for those members who had played well — or poorly. Yes, there can be an acknowledgement for the lowest score and/or possibly a random draw or two.

You only have to see the smiles on the faces of the winners, or otherwise recognized players, to understand the added excitement and fun it provides at the conclusion of an enjoyable afternoon or evening of playing cards.

The management of the centre, at the request of the City of Richmond, has recently informed all of its members that there can no longer to be any money exchanged, as that would qualify as gambling.

Sorry folks, but that rainbow horse has bolted Dear Editor, In a recent edition of the Richmond News, there was a paid advertisement by a group calling themselves Better Richmond Concern Group. They took to task Chak Au, a member of city council who is running in the upcoming provincial election as an NDP representative.

They pointed out that the NDP supports, amongst other things, gay marriage.

I hate to break it to the Better Richmond Concern Group, but all of our political parties, provincially and federally, support gay marriage. And not a single one is advocating we turn back the clock on equal rights for this demographic.

Gay marriage was legally recognized in this province in 2003, under the BC Liberal government.

In 2005, the federal Liberals introduced the Civil Marriage Act, which was approved by the House of Commons and the Senate. After the following election, the federal Conservatives reaffirmed the legislation.

As the first country outside of Europe to recognize gay marriage, it was a proud moment in Canada’s history. It made this country, this province, and the City of Richmond, better.

Rent cap for lowincome seniors needed

Mainstream value of inclusion is what makes Canada great Dear Editor, Re: “Parent group founder goes it alone,” Election 2017, March 31.

When I first saw the news about Dong Pan wanting to run for election in Richmond, I scoffed it off, but then I realized how serious the matter is. I decided to write this letter because It wouldn’t be right not to address his blatant display of ignorance.

Pan argues that having extra sensitivity to gender identity in schools is “mainstream” and that it fails to protect other minority groups.

First of all, Pan fails to see that the LGBTQ are indeed a minority group, and one of the most vulnerable ones, at that. LGBTQs are some of the most vulnerable because an LGBTQ person can fall into several minority groups all at once. For example, an LGBTQ person can be transgender, a visible minority, and an immigrant. Each of these groups are likely to be subject to discrimination.

The more minority groups a person is part of, the more likely they will feel oppressed and unsafe.

Second, he is missing the point about what it means to be a Canadian citizen in today’s society. Canada is one of the greatest countries on the planet because most Canadians learn to accept and tolerate the views of others, just like how most Canadians will continue to accept and tolerate the views of Parents Care. However, mainstream Canadians will continue to shut down the views of Pan and Parents Care because mainstream Canadians want to uphold the intrinsic value of making our society as safe as possible, for as many vulnerable people as possible.

In 1971, when Pierre Elliot Trudeau declared Canada would adopt a multicultural policy, there was, no doubt,

some backlash. But today, because Canadians upheld the mainstream value of inclusivity, we have a beautiful, vibrant, and multicultural society.

We still see racism against visible minorities today, but many “mainstream” Canadians continue to try to provide a safe environment for as many vulnerable people as possible by shutting down racist values.

Go ahead and cry foul, but it is because of mainstream policies that Canada is a great place to live and people from all over the world continue to move here to have a better life.

Dear Editor, It’s “Children First,” as an election-slogan.

How about “Seniors First,” when it comes to affordable housing.

More and more seniors face the fact that after several annual rent increases, their disposable income has shrunk to dangerously low levels.

In B.C., the annual allowable rent increase is two per cent plus inflation. This year, that means landlords are allowed to charge a 3.7 per cent rent increase — up from 2.9 per cent last year ) I would certainly vote for any party that would work out a more fair formula by lowering the allowable rent increase for qualifying seniors by eliminating the extra two per cent, for example.

t was supposed to be a celebration of the start of construction of the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project, but protestors had something else in mind.

Around three dozen opponents, including members of the Council of Canadians and Fraser Voices, were on hand at the Delta Fire Hall 4 in east Ladner Wednesday morning.

They were there to make their presence loud and clear at the scheduled government announcement, which was to include a shovels-in-the-ground photo opp.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone, joined

by Richmond East MLA Linda Reid and Delta’s Mayor Lois Jackson, were to speak outside but the boisterous protestors, several carrying placards and one determined to make full use of his megaphone, prompted officials to speak inside the fire hall.

“It’s a 10-lane bridge that’s going to cost a fortune as a result of a request from the port.

We’re promoting the idea of adding another tube with the tunnel,” said Lynn Armstrong with the Council of Canadians.

Noting the project has received Agricultural Land Commission approval, Stone told media that he respected people’s right to protest, but said it was also clear today was the official start of the provincial election campaign.

Stone then went over at length the many attributes of the project, adding much technical work has gone into analyzing it and that there’s overwhelming public support.

Stone also categorically rejected the notion the tunnel was being replaced to accommodate deeper dredging by Port of Vancouver, which isn’t contributing to the project. He said large, deep-haul ships aren’t able to turn around in the Fraser River anyway.

The tolled bridge, which includes an extensive series of new Highway 99 interchanges, is to be completed in 2022. Stone said the toll will be in line with whatever is being charged at the Port Mann Bridge at the time.

Jackson also defended the project. Citing seismic concerns, she said the bridge is the best way to address the growing needs of Delta, Surrey and the increasing population south of the Fraser.

ing for answers as to how the bridge can be built safely on a soft riverbed and on budget.

She said the province has stonewalled Richmond’s requests for information on this.

Simultaneously on Wednesday, members of the regional Mayor’s Council, including Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, held a press conference in Surrey, calling on Victoria to complete a 10-year vision for rail and bus service to help “cure congestion.”

The regional district and most other Lower Mainland mayors, including Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, have voiced opposition to the $3.5 billion bridge plan.

Stone noted the province is making billions in other transit investments. He then reiterated the bridge project is about creating jobs, as well as relieving the worst congestion point in B.C.

“We’ve had 125 meetings with Richmond alone. We’ve had dozens of meetings with Metro Vancouver. They sat on the environment assessment panel. They were involved in the Agricultural Land Commission process.

They have been plugged in throughout this whole process,” he said.

However, Brodie noted Wednesday that while there may have been meetings, “we have no reason to believe any of our input has affected the process.

“A significant problem is that they never met with us before announcing the project and we’ve always had problems with it.

“And it has been a struggle to get our questions answered with specific meetings,” said Brodie.

Among the main concerns is pushing the northbound morning bottleneck to the Oak Street Bridge. The mayor also noted the city participated in the Environmental Assessment Process, but was dissatisfied with both the process and results.

Environmental group Fraser Voices is concerned about the bridge proliferating vehicle traffic in the region, destroying farmland and negatively impacting the Fraser River.

Regardless, Stone reiterated that the time for talking was over.

“We have talked about this project, we have consulted with British Columbians, including mayors, for over five years. Five years of talk. It’s time to move on to action.”

Following his speech, protestors, under the eye of police, waited outside for Stone to exit, but he eventually slipped out the back door.

here are still not enough people getting the message about the dangers of distracted driving.

That’s the frank message from Richmond RCMP after it completed a month of focusing on drivers intent on using electronic devices while behind the wheel.

Police forces across the province — in conjunction with ICBC and the B.C. government — used the month of March to target distracted drivers with the significantly increased $368 fine.

During intermittent days last month in Richmond, Mounties, with the help of police volunteers, ticketed 164 such drivers, including 74 in a single day blitz near the end of March.

Back in March 2015, only 87 motorists received the then $167 fine for the use of an electronic device while driving.

The number that year was down markedly from the same month in 2014, when 193 drivers were ticketed.

“There is still a major disconnect with regard to distracted driving,” said Richmond RCMP’s media relations spokesperson Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

“We are not finding that people understand how dangerous the practice is.

Please leave your phone alone when you are driving. Everyone sharing the road will thank you.”

The Richmond News reported last

month how the number of violation tickets issued for distracted driving in the city had exploded in 2016 by more than 50 per cent from the year before, from 1,170 to 1,833.

Despite increasing the penalties last summer to a $368 fine and four penalty points, distracted driving still contributes to more than one quarter of all car crash fatalities in B.C., with an average of 78 people killed every year, with 26 occurring in the Lower Mainland.

These startling figures now afford distracted driving with the unenviable title as the second-leading cause of motor vehicle fatalities in the province, behind speeding, at 89, and narrowly ahead of impaired driving, at 66.

Farhad Dastur, a member of Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s (KPU) psychology faculty, told the News last month how drivers need 100 per cent of their “cognitive power” to make split-second, emergency decisions on the road.

That 100 per cent, said Dastur, is eaten away by inexperience, age, health, road conditions, impairment and, of course, distractions.

iven into trouble for doodling in Grade 5, it’s unlikely Atheana Picha envisaged that, seven years later, she would be back at Kingswood elementary being celebrated for doing exactly what she was chastised for.

And not even in the labyrinth that is Atheana’s creative mind could she have anticipated being asked to honour the school by “doodling” its new logo, complete with an Aboriginal, Coast Salish theme.

That, however, is exactly what happened — partly by chance, partly by design — for the now Grade 12 McNair secondary student, who was tasked by the school to design an eagle emblem (replacing Kingswood’s cougar), to adorn the gym wall and its sports and spirit wear.

Moments after being honoured as guest of the school at its unveiling of the new logo on Friday, Atheana, who is of Coast Salish descent, reflected on those early doodling days, as she stared up at her creation on the wall.

“It really is a great feeling to see it up there; it’s awesome,” said emerging Aboriginal artist Atheana, who, after graduating from high school, plans to attend Langara College for two years, before deciding on art programs at UBC or Emily Carr.

“In Grade 7, you do a little bit about the legacy thing; there is a $200 budget and you buy some new chairs for the school or something.

“But chairs get broken and such, whereas, something like this; it’s right up there and

won’t break. Hopefully it will last for a long time.”

Kingswood principal Ron Manning explained how, last spring, the school decided to change its cougar mascot/logo to something that was more relevant to the region and with an Aboriginal theme to match the new curriculum.

After students and staff voted for the eagle, Manning approached the Richmond School District for help in finding a local, Aboriginal artist.

“They knew of Atheana and, would you believe it, she was a former Kingswood student; it was a perfect match,” he told the Richmond News.

Atheana, who even in Grade 5 recognized there needed to be a change from the cougar logo, told students during a question and answer session on Friday that she used lots of “‘S’ shapes and ‘U’ shapes to flow more with the eagle design; I thought that would look cool.”

Asked by one student about when she started to design the new logo, her answer came as a surprise to the kids and, most likely, much to the chagrin of some of the Kingswood teachers.

“I did a little of it during a physics test, on the back of the formula sheet I think,” said Atheana, to laughter around the gym hall, adding that her mind may have wandered during the exam.

“Before the test, I had some doodles and I just kept playing with shapes and I think it looks pretty sick.”

ichmond’s Medical Health Officer, Dr. Meena Dawar, has told the Board of Education she fully supports development of a separate school district policy for students with minority sexual orientation and gender identity.

While the board is one of the last in B.C. to implement such a policy for its own district, the issue has become controversial, with a significant group of parents opposing the plan.

Despite some opposition, including from two trustees, Jonathan Ho and Alice Wong, Dawar, who doubles as the district’s School Medical Officer, stated in a letter to the board, dated March 8, that she agrees a sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) policy is necessary.

Ho did not respond to the Richmond News by deadline, while Wong said — despite having not read the letter — she felt it necessary to discern between whether this was the doctor’s personal opinion or the opinion of Vancouver Coastal Health.

“I’m not sure she represents [Vancouver Coastal Health] or if it’s her opinion,” said Wong.

Wong has maintained that the board needs to listen to all “stakeholders” on the matter, including Parents Care group, which opposes the policy.

When asked for her opinion on the matter, Wong again deferred to stakeholder consultation.

“I have to listen to all opinions and feelings. That’s how we make the decision,” said Wong, adding Dawar would be one of many stakeholders.

Dawar told the News that the letter represented her “professional recommendation as a medical health officer under the Public Health Act.” Nevertheless, Dawar also wrote (in the letter to trustees) that “VCH is prepared to work with the Board and District to explore and offer support for this policy.”

Dawar’s letter went on to state: “Gender diverse students are among the most vulnerable students in our schools and come from families of diverse ethnicity and socio demographic status. It is important to reflect on their unique needs in order to create clear and specific policy supports that cannot be fit into an existing general policy for all.

“Potential benefits of this journey are far-reaching; the literature also indicates that inclusive school environments (such as sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) policies and Gender Sexuality Alliances) have a protective effect on LGBTQ youth and co-incidentally also improve health and mental health outcomes for all students, including heterosexual students.”

The board is expected to draft a policy with public feedback come next school year.

Hospital tower press releases abound

T

he political pressure to expedite construction of a new north tower at Richmond Hospital is mounting.

Following a BC NDP announcement Monday to immediately fund a new tower, BC Liberal MLAs sent out a press release Tuesday to re-iterate that a new tower at Richmond Hospital will soon go to a business plan, after the Ministry of Health reviews and accepts the draft concept plan tabled by Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH).

MLAs Teresa Wat, Linda Reid and John Yap posed for photos in front of a design of the tower at a non-media event. The government has said it has already expedited the concept plan, which began last June. The business plan “could begin in fall 2017,” and last up to 18 months.

The BC NDP took issue with the response in its own counter press release. It said the announcement was a “recycled promise” and it reiterated

that delays in replacing the seismicallyunsafe tower have been too long.

It’s unclear, at this point, how the NDP could expedite the process. The government notes that the Ministry must first review the draft concept before making a business plan. Tracing steps of a Vimy Ridge hero Local historian digs deep to discover who Pte. Edgar Samuel Turnill was Matthew McBride Contributor

T

he 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge — arguably Canada’s greatest military victory of both world wars — will be celebrated across the country, and at the site itself in France, on Sunday, April 9.

To mark the auspicious occasion, locally renowned amateur historian Matthew McBride, whose grandfather and great grandfather both fought at Vimy, chose to frame the significant events of those four days by detailing the life of a special soldier, who has a living legacy in Richmond, a century after he made the ultimate sacrifice on the battlefield.

n The “Great War”

In June of 1914, a Serbian teenager assassinated the Arch Duke of the AustroHungarian Empire, Franz Ferdinand, and his wife in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia.

The events that followed in July 1914 set in motion an unstoppable force for the mobilization of armies in Europe, split along treaty lines that eventually led to a near-global conflict that involved 37 countries.

n Canada and the “Great War”

In 1914, Canada was a self-governing dominion of the British Empire, but bound by the foreign affairs policies of Great Britain.

Thus, when Britain declared war on Germany on Aug. 3, 1914, Canada (along with Newfoundland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa) were automatically “at war.”

The Canadian contribution to the Great War effort was massive in relation to its population. From a population of just under eight million, 619,000 (about seven per cent of the total population) would serve in uniform, and hundreds of thousands more served on the home front.

In 1915, the Canadian Corps was established. During the first years of the war, the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) gained considerable battlefield experience under British command, but in doing so, developed a strong sense of the uniqueness of Canada, and a growing independence in their view of themselves as separate from other colonies or their colonial masters.

n Vimy Ridge

By the end of 1916, the war had degenerated into a bloody stalemate.

The French armies at Verdun had suffered unimaginable horrors, and the taste for war was decidedly bitter among French armies.

Thus, for 1917, a plan concocted by France’s Gen. Robert Nivelle — that claimed to end the war in 48 hours with a massive attack all along the Western Front — was guardedly accepted by the Allied armies.

Vimy Ridge is a seven-kilometre high ground of strategic importance, due to its commanding view of the surrounding areas. It’s in northern France, near the town of Arras.

Germany had captured Vimy Ridge early in the war and held on tenaciously, despite attacks by the French and British

Easter Monday dawned with snow and sleet falling, a discomfort that became an advantage for the Canadians as the attack began.

Fifteen-thousand Canadians went “over the bags” that morning in the first wave, and thousands more followed over the course of the day.

rivate Edgar Samuel Turnill was born on Dec. 8, 1896 in the Eburne community of Richmond, near to where the Arthur Laing Bridge now stands.

He died April 11, 1917 at Vimy Ridge, France.

His regimental number in the First World War was 116735.

Biography: Turnill was born three years after his parents, Thomas Harry and Emma Jane Turnill, emigrated from England.

He worked for the canneries — in 1911 he was a foreman at the Britannia Cannery and also worked extensively for the Gulf of Georgia Cannery. One of three boys and two girls, Turnill enlisted in Victoria on April 4, 1916 aged 19 years. He gave as his occupa-

As early as 1914, the notion of Canada as unique and distinct from Great Britain had been conceived.

On enlistment, he joined the 11th Canadian Mounted Rifles and embarked for England on board SS Lapland, arriving July 25, 1916.

Prior to arrival in France, he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion Canadian Mounted Rifles. Turnill arrived in France on Nov. 29, 1916 and spent part of March 1917 in hospital with a condition called general myalgia.

He was killed, in action, on April 11, 1917 at Vimy Ridge.

Turnill’s mother, Emma, received the memorial cross. His father, Thomas, received the plaque and scroll. Thomas died of leukemia in 1930 and Emma died in 1959.

His name, however, lives on in Richmond, as Turnill Street, near Granville Avenue and Garden City Road.

The task of capturing the ridge was assigned to the Canadian Corps, who would, for the first time, fight as a single unit, with all four Canadian Divisions taking part.

By the end of the day, three of the four Canadian Corps had reached their objectives.

The 4th Canadian Division struggled against fierce opposition, but Canadian grit and courage sustained the soldiers,

who finally captured the last portions of Vimy Ridge on April 12.

A total of 3,598 Canadians died at Vimy Ridge and another 7,004 were wounded.

Among those killed in the action was a young cannery worker from Steveston, Edgar Samuel Turnill.

Born in Eburne (a former community in the Bridgeport/Marpole area) in 1896, the area was a key commercial hub for Richmond farmers.

Around 1908, Turnill, along with parents Thomas and Emma Turnill, wound up in Steveston, where he grew up in the hardy, outdoor lifestyle common to children of that era.

By 1911, at age 15, he is known to have acted as foreman at the Britannia Cannery (now Britannia Shipyard after conversion in 1917), and is also known to have been engaged in canning at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery.

Answering the powerful call to arms from the Empire, Turnill dutifully headed to Victoria and signed up with the 11th Canadian Mounted Rifles.

His attestation papers describe him as 19 years and four months of age, five-foot six and a half inches tall, with blue eyes and red hair.

Turnill's exact cause of death unknown From page 14 Europe still had a romantic, adventurist air about it. The first gas attacks, (on Canadian troops at Ypres) were 10 days off from Turnill’s enlistment date.

His enlistment process, from April 2-7, 1916 set the stage for his initial training and eventual transfer to England on the troopship SS Lapland, which arrived in March of 1916.

In England, he was transferred to the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles and landed in France Nov. 29, 1916 (while assigned to a “mounted” unit, the Canadian Mounted Rifles in this conflict were not, in fact mounted, but essentially a rifle company).

Turnill was killed in action on April 11, 1917 (exactly 100 years ago next Tuesday) in the final clean-up of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Details are difficult to determine, but the initial burial report shows a number of casualties common to the location of his body, so either machine gun or shellfire were the likely cause of death.

He was initially buried in a battlefield grave with a hastily constructed marker to indicate his place.

Turnill was exhumed in June 1919 and reburied in the Thelus Military Cemetery in France, in Plot IV, Row A, Grave 5 along with 300 other, mostly Canadian, of whom 30 have no known name.

n What did we lose when we lost Pte. Turnill?

Turnill died in the service of Canada at the very gentle age of 20.

An elder son of a young working-class Steveston family, he left behind both his parents, along with two brothers and two sisters.

There is evidence some of his descendants may still live in Richmond.

One can only speculate on what may have been, had Turnill survived and returned to Steveston. He probably would have returned to the cannery and fishing industry; he most assuredly would have settled down, married, and had a family of his own.

We lost the product of his and his descendants’ efforts; the volunteerism he, as most Great War veterans demonstrated, would have served the community, and we lost a valuable family member.

He left behind a gap in his home and his community, where he most likely would have made a powerful contribution.

n What did we gain when we lost Pte. Turnill?

Obviously, his efforts produced a victory at Vimy Ridge; an objective deemed worthy of

the loss of life by those in command. Later, historians have disagreed.

Canada came back from the Great War with a sense that it was larger than its colonial status, and that it was worthy of a greater voice on the world stage.

During the 1919 Peace Conferences, the Dominion governments were not given separate invitations to the conference, instead expected to send representatives as part of the British delegation.

Convinced that Canada had become a nation on the battlefields of Europe, Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden demanded the country have a separate seat at the conference.

This was initially opposed not only by Britain but also by the United States. The Prime Minister responded by pointing out that since Canada had lost nearly 60,000 men, a far larger proportion of its men compared to the 50,000 American losses, Canada had earned a seat at the conference.

Canada, although having sacrificed nearly 60,000 men in the war, asked for neither reparations nor mandates.

Turnill was one of thousands who died in combat or as a result of wounds to support Canada’s place in the world.

Other Richmond fatalities associated with the Battle of Vimy Ridge include Pte. Walter Steeves, of Steveston, and Pte. Edward Williams, also of Steveston.

These names, like Turnill’s, are recorded on the Richmond cenotaph on the eastern side of Richmond City Hall at Granville Avenue and No. 3 Road.

We should not live in Canada today without acknowledging the sacrifice of our valued sons from days gone by — and we don’t.

Edgar Samuel Turnill is honoured on Turnill Street, just east of Garden City and General Currie roads.

Currie was another profound figure in the Great War. The street signs are adorned with a poppy, the Canadian symbol of Remembrance. Many others are also honoured in the City of Richmond.

Today, you can walk the very same boards that Turnill walked before he went to war, by visiting the Britannia Heritage Shipyard or the Gulf of Georgia Cannery.

He was gainfully employed in both places, building an industry, a community and a country.

We live in the Canada we know today because of their sacrifice.

he public is being invited by the City of Richmond, together with the Royal Canadian Legion – Branch 291, to an event at the city hall plaza on Sunday to honour the soldiers who fought at the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

A special ceremony will kick off at 10:30 a.m. with the Richmond Community band performing, before official speeches and a moment of silence at 11

“The Battle of Vimy Ridge was an impressive Canadian victory that helped define our country,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

“One of the brave soldiers at the battle was Pte. Edgar Samuel Turnill, from Richmond.

“Unfortunately, he was killed at Vimy Ridge on April 11, 1917. This com-

memorative event is important so we can remember and honour all those who were a part of this significant piece of history.”

Canadians acted with courage throughout the battle and pushed through the cold, mud, snow and sleet to capture German strong points and take Vimy Ridge.

Canadian troops earned the reputation as formidable, effective soldiers because

of this stunning success. However, the victory came at a heavy cost with close to 11,000 killed or wounded.

“They can come and enjoy ours next Saturday,” she said. “The public can come down and we can tell them all about rabbits. If they need a bunny fix, come to our meet and treat event.”

In addition to a chance to see plenty of floppy-eared bunnies, the event will feature Easter crafts, facepainting, snacks, garage sale items, games, pet treats and supplies and rabbit adoption information.

To help accommodating visitors, there will be free shuttle bus service to the automall from both Lansdowne Centre and Richmond Centre malls.

But there are ways to embrace greener options to ensure Easter is a happy time for celebrants and the environment. Here’s how to get started.

n Easter baskets

Easter baskets overflowing with fake grass and plenty of treats are an eagerly anticipated component of Easter celebrations.

However, many of the items found in a typical Easter basket — or even the basket itself — may be made of items that are damaging to the environment.

Plastic Easter eggs are made from plastics that may not be biodegradable.

Furthermore, they may be made using chemicals that are damaging to the environment.

Plastic grass carries the same dangers.

Once discarded, plastic grass also may pose risks to wildlife that can become tangled in the substance or inadvertently eat it and choke or experience intestinal blockage.

Instead of pre-packaged Easter baskets, individuals can construct their own. Look for baskets made from reusable materials, such as wicker or other wood-based materials, steering away from plastic.

Instead of plastic grass, shred paper that is headed for the recycling bin.

Look for treats without excessive packaging. You can gather healthy treats and toys individually and put together in the basket.

This way you can cater more to what your child enjoys and rely less on the cheap stuff that will end up in the garbage.

n Easter eggs

Colouring Easter eggs is a tradition. So are the colouring kits that may be made from chemical food dyes. Instead, look to natural foods to add a festive hue to the eggs. Cranberry juice or beet juice can turn eggs pink. Red cabbage leaves or mashed blueberries can dye eggs blue. And turmeric can give eggs a yellow tint. These all-natural dyes are safe for little fingers.

n All natural decorations

Rather than silk flowers and plastic eggs, use the real thing in your decorating. Bring a little of the outside indoors with fresh flowers in a vase. Use twigs and ribbon to create inexpensive and green centerpieces for the holiday table.

assover (beginning on the evening of April 10-18, 2017) celebrates the ancient Israelites freedom from Egyptian persecution at the hand of Pharaoh Ramses II. Some years ago, I left congregational work to start an outreach program to unaffiliated Jews.

One of the first questions I was asked was, “Are you making a living?” Slavery is about ‘making a living,’ and nothing more.

Freedom is about ‘living.’”

The Jewish Israeli scholar Noam Zion writes, “On Passover we see ourselves in the mirror of the story of the redemption from slavery in Egypt. Each of us journeys to our own Egypt, as a way to respond to a threat or to address a need. We identify how we may be trapped and enslaved in our lives so to begin our own process of liberation.

“As we grow and develop, our needs change. We find ourselves constricted in some way. Initially, we may fail to notice that a problem exists. We may not be aware of other possibilities; we may deaden ourselves to our dissatisfaction; we may not understand the true cause of difficulties we do experience; or, we may be afraid that change is not possible.”

It was not when they were told they would be leaving Egypt that the ancient Israelites celebrated. It was when they crossed the Red Sea and were truly free.

What keeps many from taking hold of the

unhappiness in their lives and risking change is the fear of jumping through the proverbial “hoop of fire.”

The worst part is thinking about making the leap. Once you are through it, you are a new person.

The 18th century Hasidic Rabbi Nachman profoundly noted, “we all have our personal Egypts within us.”

Passover is a Passover reminds time to sit with us that living, by friends and family and dare definition, involves to speak of the notion of being risk-taking. slaves in our own day; slaves to jobs, money, expectations, etc.

What, if anything, can we do about it? How, in our day, can we go from the “slavery of Egypt,” to the “freedom of Jerusalem?”

Passover reminds us that living, by definition, involves risk-taking.

Are we willing to risk a comfort and security that has never produced the kind of lives we want for a chance to begin, again?

A Jew’s task on Passover is to make the opening and closing statements of the Passover prayer book a personal challenge for the coming year.

We begin by saying, “This year we are slaves, next year may we be free,” and we conclude by recognizing the Jewish symbol of hope and freedom, “Next year in Jerusalem.”

A

fter selling Vancouver Canucks hockey jerseys and hoodies for close to a decade, Steveston’s Janiel McKay decided to surround herself with something a little more delicate.

And now, the owner who opened Pretty Things Florist and Designer Gifts — perched on the corner of Bayview Street and Third Avenue — just six months ago, is sharing that with a wider audience by taking part in a display event that uses florals for fashion.

McKay, who worked as the Canucks’ retail director has her staff taking part in the Fleurs de Villes, which is billed as Canada’s premiere Floral Mannequin Series. Running until April 9 at Metropolis at Metrotown, the event has participating floral shops from across the Lower Mainland “dress” a mannequin in flowers.

“We participated last year when it was held at Oakridge mall and now we will be making a return with a creation that is inspired by the environment here in Steveston, with all the waterfront’s elements and the sea,” said McKay. “So, the mannequin we’re designing will be natural and organic.

“It will be a complete departure from the one we created last year which was a little more Oakridge-focused with a lot of golds and reds.”

A team of three florists was expected to take roughly 15 hours to cover their mannequin

with an array of blooms.

“One thing you’ve got to know when you come up with a vision and a design for something like this, is it doesn’t always work out exactly as planned, because it’s a creative process,” McKay said. “And during that process, things can change.”

One of the biggest challenges is keeping the flowers fresh for the duration of the show.

“You choose long-lasting flowers. And for others, there’s water tubes you incorporate.

Then you spritz it often.”

While there’s only bragging rights on the line at Fleurs de Villes, the event represents the opportunity for her new location to show what it can accomplish. Plus, it can put the business on the map for prospective customers since, Pretty Things only opened its doors in Steveston last fall.

McKay originally started her business a couple of years ago in Oakridge, but felt the business was not well-suited to the mall.

“I absolutely fell in love with the space here in Steveston,” said McKay, who has lived locally for the past four years. “I loved the natural light and high ceilings and fact there’s a bake shop and bridal store next door. Plus, I wanted to get out of the mall environment for a place that is more conducive for wedding consultations.

“Plus, I live about five minutes away from the store.”

Being a local helped McKay hone in on the vibe she wanted to create inside her shop.

She also tapped into her vast experience in store development and design, something

she provided for the likes of not only the Canucks, but Holt Renfrew, Helly Hansen and Peter Nygard, who heads up Canada’s largest fashion house.

“I’ve opened retail stores across North America and Europe. I love retail and creating that cool, shopping experience for the customer,” McKay said. “And hopefully I’ve accomplished it here.

“I came up with the look and feel for Pretty Things,” she added. “I’ve always had an entrepreneurial side and thought it would be good to start something new myself.”

One of the unique touches McKay added

was an in-store coffee bar so clients can casually sip a beverage while they peruse the shelves of gifts and wall of coolers storing a veritable kaleidoscope of fresh cut flowers.

“I thought, well what do you do while you’re in Steveston? Well, you grab a coffee and go for a walk.”

To compliment the flower store, McKay recently acquired an event décor rental company.

“So, not only is it flowers,” she said. “This will become a one-stop shop with all of your décor needs and flowers for that special occasion.”

Shopping onsite includes some of the best and biggest retailers in the region including: Bed Bath & Beyond, Winners, Shoppers Drug Mart, Walmart, Best Buy, The Brick, T&T Supermarket along with a Passport Office.

By Elizabeth Model Central City in Surrey is a bustling mecca of business, shopping and education that has been the catalyst for growth in Surrey’s downtown core since Blackwood Partners purchased the mixed-use development in 2007.

Of course, it hasn’t always been that way. Ten years ago, when Blackwood Partners bought Central City, they took on the complex role of aiding in the rejuvenation of Surrey, which at that time was struggling to attract business and development into what is now Surrey’s vibrant downtown. Developers and businesses alike were looking for a modern, leading-edge facility that could attract not only business, but skilled workers and consumers from every demographic, along with students.

When it was purchased, Central City filled an important void in Surrey’s evolution at the time, and today, it continues to be a magnet for new business and opportunities. It also serves as one of the reasons Surrey continues to be one of the fastest growing cities in Canada, welcoming approximately 800 new residents per month.

The reasons for this are aplenty. Central City is an award-winning facility that combines 140 retail stores with restaurants and services. Not to mention, the large civic plaza was the first open urban space in Surrey when it was built. There is also a 350,000-square-foot Simon Fraser University campus along with a 560,000-square-foot office tower housed within Central City.

In a region that is so dependent on transit to move people, having access to two SkyTrain stations at Central City is hugely important – ultimately connecting people with services and schooling. The two SkyTrain stations, coupled with thousands of

Developments that are now open to the public include the expansion of Surrey Memorial Hospital, Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre, the RCMP Headquarters that houses over 2,700 members and support personnel, Surrey’s 77,000-square-foot City Centre Library, and the new 165,000-square-foot Surrey City Hall that opened in February 2014.

In the coming years, we’ll continue to see the areas surrounding Central City evolve and develop into one of Canada’s best urban centres as it attracts new business and opportunities. An exciting new project that is underway is 3 Civic Plaza, a mixed-use Marriott Autograph Collection® hotel coupled with a residential project that is currently under construction. It is 52 storeys and will house a 30,000-square-foot Kwantlen Polytechnic University Satellite Campus once completed. When completed, this tower will be the tallest building in Metro Vancouver outside of downtown Vancouver.

Another important project that will soon join the neighbourhood is a new YMCA with state-of-the-art amenities. These projects are estimated to cost $500 million and will provide significant local and regional economic benefits.

espite entering his first year as a head coach in junior hockey, Steve Robinson says he’s going to take much of the same approach he took on the bench over the past six years with his Seafair Midget A1 teams.

The new Richmond Sockeyes coach wants to balance fostering young players’ skills, promoting a winning attitude and having fun.

“If the team succeeds, everyone benefits.

That’s the common ground, even if the kids have different goals as to why they’re playing. I want to root the team’s culture in that basis — you’re here to have fun, but winning is fun . . . That’s the mentality I try to preach to the kids,” said Robinson.

ichmond Ravens Peewee C1 team wrapped up a terrific season by winning their division in the 20th Annual Ice Classic Female Hockey Tournament, held March 24-26 at the Richmond Ice Centre.

Preliminary round wins over Meadow Ridge, Campbell River and Yukon, along with a tie with Cowichan, set the stage for the championship game and a rematch against Campbell River.

Pre-tournament injuries to key players, such as goaltender Sophie Metz and forward Isabelle Chai, left the Ravens with a short bench. But the team dug deep and responded with a strong overall effort.

Tamara Dee opened the scoring midway through the first period, followed by two second period markers by Jenna So to stake the Ravens to a 3-0 lead.

From there, goaltender Jaena McGarrigle — aided by blueliners Kristina Doray, Makenna Kusec, Shayna Roper and Claire Pogor — closed the door the rest of the way for the shutout victory.

Forwards Sydney Neilson-Anderson, Katie Bollo, Ella May Dunn and Caeli Yamanaka also produced strong two-way play and the team only allowed 12 shots in the game.

The victory capped a successful season that saw the Ravens win the regular season league banner and two tournament titles.

“The girls played well as a team and had a great season both on and off the ice,” stated head coach Ryan Roper, who was joined on the bench by assistants Martin Bollo, Jennifer McGarrigle and Brian Yamanaka. Sonya Chai was the team manager.
