nd we’re off … on another election campaign.

In just over six weeks, most of us in B.C. will have the opportunity to make our mark to help chart the course for our fine province.

I can already see the eyes rolling. Okay, so let’s address that cynicism — because clearly it’s out there. Only 52 per cent of eligible voters turned up at the polls in B.C.’s last election, and that was even higher than the 2009 provincial election, when only 50 per cent bothered to make their mark.

We could call all those non-voters lazy and berate them for not doing their democratic duty. But if those same folks genuinely thought election results would impact their personal lives and that they, as individuals, could help sway those results, I believe they would show up. But then, I also believe who’s in power matters — as does every vote.

I get that politicians of all stripes are often at the whim of larger forces, and that campaigns can be full of self-serving slogans and promises that are never realized, but to dismiss the whole process is to throw the baby out with the bath water, as they say.

At the Richmond News, over the next five weeks, we hope to illustrate ways in which politics impacts you personally; what it means when you break your leg and end up in the north tower of Richmond Hospital — that very tower that hospital administrators are begging to have replaced because it may not survive even a moderate earthquake; what it means for your kid to attend a school that may close because of declining enrollment; what it means when your ability to grow your business is limited by gridlock in the Massey Tunnel.

We’ll look at the ongoing debate between protecting the environment and fostering economic growth through a local lens, weighing the interests of agriculture and fish habitat against what may be substantial financial spin-offs of dredging of the Fraser to support international energy markets, such as LNG. We’ve already been covering candidate announcements, but next week we will start our campaign coverage in earnest. Look for our election logo throughout the paper; on our website, you’ll find an election tab featuring candidate bios and stories.

At this point, 13 candidates have thrown their hats into the ring. Each of Richmond’s four ridings has a Liberal and NDP representative; there’s a Green candidate in every riding except for Richmond South Centre, a Conservative in Richmond-Queensborough and an independent in Richmond Centre North. Congrats to them all for stepping up.

It’s easy to become cynical about politics, but it’s always worth it to be involved. For our part, we will at least ensure you have no excuse to be uninformed.

We're an Island City without nature Dear Editor, Re: “Legal zoning doesn’t make it right,” Letters, March 8.

John Edmondson’s letter concerning the effect of megahomes on established neighborhoods rang very true for my wife and me.

We live at the house on Doulton Place that has been “sentenced to limited natural light.” Along the west side of our property, a 75-80 foot-long continuous wall is going up. It does indeed extend far beyond our house, blocking the sun, adversely affecting our garden and condemning us to being hemmed in by a “warehouse wall.”

The bigger concern, for hundreds, if not thousands, of Richmond residents affected in this way, is the lack of sensitivity and respect given to all of us who live in established neighbourhoods.

Many of us have lived here for decades, raised our children and contributed to the community, only to be swamped by developers whose motto seems to be “Build it, sell it, move on.”

Faced with this, the question becomes “who will stick up for those residents whose quality of life is being diminished?”

Who is representing us and our concerns when it comes to the effects of massive houses?

Furthermore, how do developers and city council reconcile the building of these large

houses with preservation of the environment? Much of a torn-down house ends up in the land-fill, while new, massive houses consume more energy and resources than those they replace and the resultant loss of trees, grass, flowers, etc. is making us an “Island City — without nature.”

Why hasn’t city council, which for many years has presided over this growing problem, brought in stronger bylaws and regulations to deal with this? Why, for example, do they not consider the following: z Publishing plans for single-family residences when applications are first made.

This would give residents a chance to give feedback and “social license” to the proposals; z Consider the concept of “Heritage Neighbourhoods” to ensure development and renovation that is consistent with the character of a neighbourhood. If we can protect Steveston, we can protect other areas of Richmond; z Through much stronger by-laws and incentives, encourage renovation rather than easily accepting a tear-down mentality.

If the current by-laws are unchanged our neighbourhoods risk being further destroyed. And, yes, while what’s happening now may be legal, that doesn’t make it right!

Dear Editor, Re: “News does its job for community,” Letters, March 22.

The Richmond News is a great communication tool for all the communities in Richmond.

I don’t think having a bulletin board set up for each neighbourhood could do a better job in facilitating an understanding of each other than reading the local newspaper.

I’ve gone from being baffled by certain arguments and stories to writing letters and participating in the discussion.

There are just so many things packed in the paper.

You’d miss out many things if you just breezed through the articles and ads.

One of the best things I have learned from the paper’s ads is that the city has a website and they have a request/report a problem service. It is very easy to use.

You could request to have your street potholes mended, extra street lighting installed and numerous other things.

You could also file a complaint about anything and they usually respond within two or three days.

Dear Editor, To the young couple walking west on the dyke, a bit beyond the Richmond Olympic Oval on Sunday, March 19, just after 4 p.m., I thank you most sincerely once more for your assistance.

I was quite nonplussed when my bicycle basket became detached from my bike, ending up on the gravel pathway, along with stuff just purchased at Costco.

Bunnies live long after Easter Abandoned pets a heartbeaker Dear Editor, Anyone who spends any time in Minoru Park has noticed the rabbits there. They are found by the chapel and scattered throughout the park.

You will see visitors taking photos of the rabbits and sometimes offering them carrots or other treats.

For many years I have routinely visited these rabbits who are abandoned to live in Minoru Park. I have met hundreds of rabbits. Some I have met once or twice and others I have seen over several months or years. A few I have come to know well.

I don’t talk to the rabbits and the time I spend with them is limited. But we always communicate through our eyes and our body language and so we understand each other. I know their hunger, their fear, and their suffering. I have witnessed how as abandoned pets they must struggle so hard to survive. When possible, I have tried to help them and get help for them. Sometimes I could; sometimes I could not.

Now I want to walk away and never look back. But the problem is that there are still rabbits left in Minoru Park. However bad I may feel, those rabbits feel far worse. As much as I want to never again bear witness to what is happening, I have no choice but to return and keep trying to help the rabbits. To not return is to give up all hope. And that is not an option.

Why am I telling you this? Because you may not be aware that all is not as it appears to be in Minoru Park. And the next time you see a rabbit in the park, I hope that you will remember my words. I ask you to think about the reality of that abandoned pet rabbit you see before you.

Please, don’t be a bystander to the cruelty. Step forward and participate in ending the tragedy of Minoru Park’s abandoned rabbits for once and for all. These sweet, defenseless creatures have no voice. They need you to speak on their behalf.

What you can do: z Never abandon a rabbit or other pet. z Adopt, don’t shop, when adding a rabbit or other pet to your family. z Contact animal control and the SPCA when you see a rabbit or any animal being mistreated or abandoned. It is against the law. z Contact your local city council and MLA, requesting action be taken to help the abandoned rabbits. z Support rescue efforts and rescues/ shelters who take in abandoned rabbits and other animals. z Speak out and be a voice for the innocent victims.

Dear Editor, Re: “Onni floats hotel idea for Steveston,” News, March 15.

Further to reporter Graeme Wood’s article regarding the Onni Group, living next to Onni as a neighbour, is much the same as living next to North Korea. You know that they don’t have your best interest in mind, and then a nuclear missile lands right close to you.

The problem with Onni is their corporate greed; it has been their flaw since day one.

They have never been able to wrap their minds around the fact that we (the community) have spent numerous hours/days/ weeks laying out what the community was

concerned about.

We have attended their “let’s make friends” presentation and although Little Red Riding Hood was there, we could still see the fur of a wolf underneath. If we have rejected all of their un-neighbourly advances so far, why do they think that a hotel would do? We have a hotel.

We want what we agreed to, or we want space for a community center gym and library (gratis) and then we can talk.

Good neighbours don’t move into a community (and that is Steveston) and then open a car dealership right on the property.

Where was the discretion?

Dear Editor, Re: “Property rights clash with ‘city slicker’ council,” Feature, March 10.

When it comes to home sizes on ALR land, I believe the city has artificially created this issue for the purpose of sticking farm land with unnecessary restrictions.

The average home size

on ALR land has grown by 50 per cent in the last five years, from approximately 80,00 to 12,000 square feet.

Why? Because the permit department, which has discretion, has allowed it.

Why hasn’t the permit department simply refused to allow such house sizes?

This points to a serious

lack of discretion from city officials. So why, then, is the solution to enact laws to restrict house sizes to around 5,000 square feet (much less than the average housing size five to seven years ago) instead of changing the permit department employees and guidelines?

Beware of MLAs bearing pre-election gifts Dear Editor, Re: “Bernier put on hot seat,” News, March 15.

An actual funding announcement!

In the run-up to the May 9 provincial election, the B.C. Liberals have been scurrying around the province, making billions of dollars of funding announcements, none of which targeted Richmond directly.

Finally, the Liberals announced funding to seismically upgrade and expand Cook Elementary school (of course shovels are not expected in the ground until the summer of 2018; plenty of time to change their minds).

If the work is actually undertaken, completion is not expected until the fall of 2020 and will be only the fourth school seismically upgraded in Richmond. Fortunately for me, my wife works in one of the upgraded schools.

By coincidence, 2020 was when all schools in the province were to be seismically upgraded.

At the rate these upgrades are progressing, it will not be until 2095 when the remaining 25 schools currently listed as requiring upgrades in Richmond will be completed.

The estimated cost for this project is $14 million. Contrast this with the more than $300 million the Liberals have promised for Surrey schools and the promise of an additional $245 million for transportation improvements for Surrey/Delta.

Liberal MLA Teresa Wat trumpets that she is “Working for Richmond. Working for you.” I would suggest she, along with Richmond’s two other Liberal MLAs, is not working hard enough for Richmond, when compared to MLAs in Surrey.

Dear Editor, Re: “Legal zoning doesn’t make it right,” Letters, March 8.

The intrusion of megahomes, probably “rooming houses,” in once quiet, established Richmond neighbourhoods is distressing.

This practice is not environmentally sound, in that it involves scrapping perfectly good homes, thereby wasting good lumber and other materials. Is it right that we should continue with deforestation to just throw wood into the dump?

I agree with John Edmondson, who writes in a letter to the editor that allowing huge structures on small residential lots is unfair to the neighbours, as it cuts out the natural light from their homes and gardens. Not to mention the increased traffic, huge machinery and construction noise even on once quiet Sundays.

Though the announcement is welcome, it does not mean the project will proceed.

The Liberals are big on announcements and photo-ops, but often fall short on delivery. To paraphrase, beware of Liberals (in particular and politicians in general) bearing gifts, particularly with an election imminent.

In 2013, Christy Clark announced that 45 schools were to be seismically upgraded over a three-year period. At the time of the announcement, Clark said “absolutely nothing is more important than keeping our kids safe.”

To date, 11 upgrades have been completed and a staggering 24 are still in the “business case development stage.” This is just one in a litany of Clark’s promises made and not kept.

She will say anything to get re-elected!

Of the 45 schools targeted, only one was in Richmond, Gilmore elementary. Four years later, it is still in the “business case development stage.”

This further highlights how our current Liberal MLAs are not working hard enough for Richmond.

Once again, another person projects their fear-based opinions on the Richmond News readers. It must be so exhausting for you to be filled with so much fear and hatred towards fellow human beings.

Yes, we are a progressive society. If you have done any traveling abroad, you would know that. And we would progress even faster if people such as yourself looked inwards, got off your pedestal and stopped judging others.

To liken doctor-assisted suicide to being transgender is so ludicrous that I have to encourage you to educate yourself beyond radical Christian propaganda.

Richmond realtor and former BC NDP candidate is running for the BC Conservative Party in the new Richmond-Queensborough riding.

A local resident of almost 30 years, Hong-Kong born Kay Hale came second in Richmond-Steveston while flying the BC NDP flag in the 2005 provincial election, garnering 7,334 votes to BC Liberal John Yap’s 13,859.

Prior to becoming a realtor in 2007, Hale was the owner/operator of a management consultancy firm and was briefly in the running for Richmond School Board trustee in 2014, before pulling out for medical reasons, shortly after filing her candidate papers.

“One of the reasons I decided to run for the BC Conservatives has to do with the hardships faced by low-income seniors,” said Hale, who’s also a supporter of local food initiatives and volunteers in the summer, helping to harvest fruit and vegetables from some of the city’s community gardens.

She also sits on the board of the Richmond Garden Club.

“The BC Conservatives have an innovative approach to one of the hardships, namely hospital parking fees, which has been a pet peeve of mine in recent years.”

Of her shift from the BC NDP to the BC Conservatives, Hale said a lot has changed in the last 12 years.

“The economy has changed and my perception of what is important to the people of Richmond has changed,” she told the Richmond News on Thursday.

On the Massey Tunnel versus bridge debate, Hale — whose father was a British citizen and her mother of Burmese descent — is advocating for more public input on the decision.

“The concerns raised by Richmond about this project have continually been ignored throughout the consultation and assessment process,” added Hale, who’s fluent in English, Cantonese, Hindi and Punjabi.

According to Corbin Mitchell, president of the party, “The endorsement of a fine candidate with deep family values, privatesector work experience and lots of community involvement is another sign that the B.C. Conservative Party will be competitive in numerous constituencies around the province.”

Hale and her French-Canadian, mechanical engineer husband have two children and four grandchildren.

She will be up against the BC Liberal’s Jas Johal, the BC NDP’s Aman Singh and the BC Green Party’s Michael Wolfe.

Richmond distribution company has sparked a national, serious health warning over drugs related to breast cancer and infertility.

Health Canada issued the advisory on Tuesday after it seized unauthorized products from EPCA Shipping Inc. at 111511871 Horseshoe Way in the Ironwood industrial area of south Richmond.

The government agency said the business is Canadian distribution centre for ExtremePeptides.com, which distributes drugs promoted to treat a wide variety of medical conditions.

“The products are promoted to treat cancer, infertility, respiratory diseases, enlarged thyroid and erectile dysfunction and are labelled to contain various prescription drugs that may pose serious risks to the health of Canadians,” the health agency said in a written warning on its website.

The agency is now working with the Canada Border Services Agency to prevent the further importation of the products in question.

Health Canada is advising anyone in possession of the drugs (see below) to stop using them immediately and contact their doctor or health professional if they have concerns.

One of the drugs, Anastrozole, should

be used only under the supervision of a doctor experienced in the use of cancer drugs and should not be used by pregnant or breast-feeding women. Serious side-effects include severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), allergic reaction with swelling of the face, lips, tongue and/or throat that may cause difficulty swallowing and/or breathing, angina, liver inflammation (hepatitis), and increased blood calcium levels.

Tram tells decades of stories Steveston's Interurban Tram is a glimpse into the past and, maybe, the future GRAEMEWOOD Staff Reporter

or about an hour last Saturday, long-time Richmond resident Meribeth Hardern, and a handful of other volunteers, sat inside the Steveston Interurban Tram house, meticulously peeling and scraping paint off little pieces of the heritage train — the No.1220, which ran between Marpole and the Village, from 1913 to 1958.

“I think it’s very interesting that they’re restoring the tram, and I thought it would be fun to see what’s involved in doing that,” said Herdern.

Eventually, however, Herdern’s small, patience-testing tasks will be unveiled as part of a complete project — that of a sparkling restored tram that can be wheeled outside of its custom-built house, at No. 1 Road and Moncton Street, on special occasions, such as Canada Day. “I’ll be able to say, I did that one,” she says, holding a switch that will be installed in the driver’s panel.

The tram is undergoing a $400,000 renovation, thanks in large part to Mayor Malcolm Brodie’s insistence on spending the extra money on what is Richmond’s largest historical artefact.

“People appreciate an artefact like that, once it is restored. It’s a terrific reminder of our transportation history,” said Brodie.

“An item like that deteriorates over time. You preserve it best by keeping it in good shape,” he noted.

Leading the restoration work is Rebecca Forrest, curator of collections for City of Richmond Museum and Heritage Services.

“The biggest challenge with the tram car has been twofold: Finding original parts — and when we can’t find original parts, we have reproductions made; and also finding the skill and talent — people who know how the cars were built, in order to restore them,” said Forrest.

Steveston’s tram is one of 28 1200-class trains commissioned by BC Electric Railway Company in 1912, from a factory in St.Louis, MO. Today, seven exist, with five in B.C., in various states of functionality (No.1225 in Surrey is operated by the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society).

When the trams were decommissioned in the 1950s, many parts were scrapped and the wooden bodies were burned, noted Forrest.

“We’ve been trying to piece together different information.

It’s been a real mystery and it’s been a fun project to work on,” she said.

The restoration work involves building a new, waterproof roof, refurbishing the interior seats and ceilings, restoring original paint and colours to pieces, such as switches, and rust-proofing the undercarriage.

Notably, the ceiling was not historically accurate, so it’s been completely stripped.

Finding replacement parts is the first goal. If this cannot be achieved, the team, led by conservator Andrew Todd, will decide on whether or not to build replica parts.

This can be expensive. For example, replacing the rusty steel connector to the electrical guidelines could cost upwards of $5,000, plus labour.

In another example, Forrest said they have about half the vent covers for the interior, but will need to make more.

“Looking for parts is a task,” she said.

Forrest is attempting to restore the tram to its original appearance, however the way it looked changed over the five decades it operated. As such, when complete, the tram will act as a lengthy time capsule, with pieces from each decade, intertwined with one another, noted Forrest.

Using photos is key in restoring the original parts, said Forrest. It’s for this reason that the restored tram will largely resemble its latter years (this, and because older parts are harder to come by).

Different pieces tell different stories, as well. There’s graffiti, for instance. Or, take the metal grates that were installed after the tram started operating.

“Unfortunately, some tram passengers were sticking their arms out the windows and I have been told there were a few accidents. We do not have any of the original grates left from the No. 1220, but may look into creating reproductions,” explained Forrest.

And, one of the tram doors is different than the other.

“The cars, of course, came here in pristine condition, but over the years, like our own vehicles, were in accidents, and things happened to them — but that tells an interesting story,” said Forrest.

The work is expected to be complete by October, but Forrest is quick to point out

this is a soft deadline. By Canada Day, she hopes to roll No.1220 outside and have its lighting system fully operational.

As for it ever running again, say up and down Moncton Street as a fully-functioning transportation system to get people from point-to-point in Steveston, Forrest said it is possible.

“But that would take a lot of effort to rebuild the trucks underneath and implement safety systems. They also ran on overhead electrical systems and we don’t have that anymore,” she said.

The tram, she said, is a great glimpse into our past — for both good and bad reasons.

“In the Fifties,” said Forrest, “there was a campaign called Rails to Rubber, and it was primarily coming out of the United States; car manufacturers were trying to encourage people to purchase a vehicle and they had a lot of weight politically, a lot of money, so across North America, you saw a reassessment of these light-rail systems and a real campaign against them. They were integral to the Lower Mainland’s movement of

people. It was a shame when they disappeared.

“I think what’s the most interesting part of the tram’s history is that we, as a people, now, are starting to realize the value of these light-rail systems and moving back towards them, and encourage people to not purchase cars, use transit, and use cars less.” n The 1220 car operating on the Vancouver-Marpole line in 1950, (above), and at Blundell Station in 1952, (left). oun. Harold Steves is hoping to restore the very thing that once made Railway Avenue a namesake.

One day, he wants to see a modern, electric light-rail transit (LRT) system placed along the Railway Corridor, harkening back to the era, between 1913 and 1958, when the Steveston People do not want Interurban rail corridors in their Tram ran to and from backyards.

“The tram represents not just the past, but hopes for the future. Hopefully we’ll run LRT right down Railway to Vancouver,” said Steves.

The true impact of the closure of the tram system by BC Electric Railway Company is never lost on Steves, considering it only took 45 minutes to get from Steveston to Downtown Vancouver on it.

“Faster than it is today! That’s what’s annoying. If you take a bus from Steveston

and transfer at Canada Line, it’s 10 minutes longer,” said Steves, 79.

“We called (the tram) the red rocket. It was the beginning of the space age and it swung and swayed as it went down the Railway; it wasn’t really a rocket,” he laughed.

So what will it take to get electric rail cars “rocketing” back down Railway?

Steves said a lot of things need to align, but if they do, it could happen in as early as 20 years — in his opinion. First, city council would need to be on board; then, regional transportation planners and authorities.

Second, existing regional transportation plans would need to be implemented — a shift away from car culture is important.

Building a bridge to replace the Massey Tunnel will stall this shift, said Steves.

Next, there would need to be buy-in from residents, both in Richmond, and along the Arbutus Corridor, should the system be connected to Vancouver.

Steves noted the regional long-term plan is to use Arbutus as an LRT corridor to connect to Shell Road, in order to service South Surrey one day. This route could theoretically branch off into West Richmond.

Of course, there would also need to be more residents living in the area to financially support an LRT line.

Not everyone shares the optimism of Steves.

Mayor Malcolm Brodie said he sees too many impediments to reviving rail service adjacent to Railway Avenue.

“I would very much like Railway to be a transit corridor; however, I can’t see it happening,” said Brodie.

He noted there had once been talk about running the tram along Moncton Street (as a micro transit system and tourist attraction for the Village) and even that idea was halted by residents.

“There was a great backlash against that. People do not want rail corridors in their backyards. So, I have my doubt,” said Brodie.

Furthermore, Brodie doesn’t see the Railway Corridor densifying more than the townhouses that have been allowed along the street. Although existing apartments and townhouses to the west of the corridor could be redeveloped in the future, Brodie doesn’t see this happening any time soon, and certainly not in 20 years.

Furthermore, “You can adequately service the corridor with buses for the foreseeable

future. That’s more viable,” said Brodie.

Looking beyond the foreseeable future, Steves said he opposed a staff proposal last year to designate the Railway Corridor as a park; he wanted to maintain its transportation land-use designation.

“Generations before us had the vision to put in light-rail transit” to Steveston, he said.

City staff told council last year that a light rail line can be built on the corridor, even if it’s designated as a park. But Steves said he doesn’t want confusion decades after the fact; he wants future residents to know there is potential for an LRT system.

He’s also trying to avoid planning snafus that will complicate installing future tracks, such as one made roughly 25 years ago.

Then, Steves and Coun. Doug Sandberg opposed the rezoning of Railway Avenue, south of Garry Street, from rail tracks to single-family homes. Today, that strip of homes could pose a nuisance for LRT. “We’d have to put the tracks on the road now,” said Steves.

Otherwise, north of Garry, the tracks could be placed alongside Railway Avenue, where presently there’s a ditch and strip of trees, he noted.

“I objected to the tree planting when the park plan was approved” in 2012, Steves said, pointing to a row of young maple and birch trees.

“In 20 years they will be heritage trees.

Then, everyone will be complaining about cutting down the trees.”

wo Richmond performers are starring in a “re-imagined” production of Jason Robert Brown’s “Songs for a New World” playing Downtown now until Saturday, April 1.

Katie McColl and Regi Nevada, who is a teacher at St. Joseph’s the Worker in Richmond, form part of the 15-strong cast, which is billed as taking audience members on a journey to new worlds including Syria, Afghanistan, the North Pole, the Philippines, a Shaughnessy mansion, colonial America, the Bronx and the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

The performance, which is being produced by newcomer Fabulist Theatre and directed by Damon Jang, is reportedly a “rare kind of show” with a song cycle somewhere “between a musical” and “a revue” that explores themes of immigration, war, motherhood, poverty and the “singular moments that transform our lives.”

opportunities for a wide variety of performers, both amateur and professional.”

The producers will be donating partial profits to the UNHCR (UN Refugee Agency in Canada) as well as donating tickets to new immigrants.

Songs for a New World runs now to April 1 at the PAL Studio Theatre,

Tickets are $28 (general admission) and $24 (students/seniors).

The March 29 performance is admitted on a “Pay-What-You-Can” basis.

here is a slightly surreal quality to Marni Jackson’s debut novel, Don’t I Know You? A novel broken into short stories, each one following Rose McEwan’s life from 16-60. These stories go through Rose’s life chronologically, and each one contains a pop culture figure as a central character role in the story.

Whether it is wise words given

by Joni Mitchell, or a friendly kidnapping by Bill Murray, the best part of each story is Rose’s uncanny ability to describe the weird world she’s living in.

Jackson is great at setting a scene and there is a languid flow to her words that really carries the reader on and through even some of the confusingly unbelievable celebrity encounters, such as Bob Dylan as an impromptu, guest-bedroom-crashing mooch.

These stories, despite Rose’s recurrent proximity to fame and fortune, aren’t about the glamour and glitz of celebrity, but more of a sort of mundane celebrity fanfiction.

And don’t let my use of “fanfiction” deter you either: these stories could exist without the celebrities and they would still be interesting, well-written vignettes.

The use of celebrities allows the reader to bring their own characterization into the picture — a sort of shorthand to explore the story without worrying about having to build a character from scratch.

Though certainly infused with detail from Jackson’s imagination, we all know a bit about Dylan without having to read much backstory or context. This also gives an intimacy to the storytelling — what would we do if Bob Dylan turned up at our cottage?

There is a strong humour to Jackson’s choices of how the celebrities turn up in Rose’s life, an almost Wes Anderson-translated-to-the-page offbeatness.

I do think that this book is stronger in the first half than the second, as the stories do get a bit less believable as they go on.

Another way to avoid this would be to read the book a few stories at a time, maybe even out of chronological order? Regardless, I enjoyed the writing and the premise is fun and original.

'Hotbed' amateur radio waves getting bigger Richmond club hosts its first ever meet Alan Campbell

A

“hotbed” of activity and “growth” membership are not the two words that roll off the tongue when you think of amateur radio.

That is, however, exactly how the president of the Richmond Amateur Radio Club (RARC), Urey Chan, describes the surprising movement taking place within the confines of organizations across the Lower Mainland and Canada.

According to Chan, 40 per cent of the national growth in amateur radio licenses is here in the Lower Mainland, where the interest in the activity is matching pace with the increase in population.

And, although not known for being a sexy hobby by any stretch, the Richmond president puts the majority of the recent rise in popularity in the formerly dusty pastime down to people’s preoccupation with being prepared for a natural disaster.

“The president of our national organization was in Vancouver recently and he spoke of a demographic analysis, which showed that amateur radio is actually on the rise in Canada,” said Chan.

“It just doesn’t receive the media profile it deserves; it’s actually rising at the same growth rate of the population in the Lower Mainland.

“It is (sexy) when you tie it to emergency operations and preparedness; people’s eyes widen and all of a sudden they’re interested when you mention the connection.

“That’s by far the main reason for the growth; 40 per cent of which, in terms of the national figures, comes from the Lower Mainland. This is the hotbed here for amateur radio.”

The spike in interest in the hobby is, partly, why the RARC, which dates back to the ‘60s, is hosting its first ever swap meet (AKA hamfest) on Saturday, April 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at South Arm United Church, at 11051 No 3 Rd. One of the features of the event will be a ham radio station on site for the public to contact the special radio station at Vimy Ridge in France, where Richmond resident and amateur radio operator Don Studney, along with 16 fellow enthusiasts from across North America will be broadcasting 24/7 around the world, for 10 straight days, to mark the 100th year since the famous Canadian First World War victory.

“This is the first time we’ve done this in Richmond, but we hope it will become an annual event,” said Chan, noting his club has 35 members.

“It was never really in the club’s culture to do something like this, we were more of a technical organization.

“It’s only recently that they’ve started to integrate more into the community. Also, because of the club’s changing demographics – we’ve now got between 25 and 30 per cent women as members – that changes the way the club thinks. And, in order to survive, we had to open up more to the public.”

Chan is hoping for between 200 and 500 people at the event.

he Vancouver International Wine Festival is more than a series of wine tastings, lunches and dinners.

It’s also a time to honour an individual who has made a significant contribution to BC wine.

This year, the Spirited Industry Professional Award was presented to Harry McWatters, a 49-year veteran and wine industry icon, often compared to Robert Mondavi, who put California on the world wine map.

McWatters founded Sumac Ridge Estate Winery, B.C.’s first estate winery in 1980, and See Ya Later Ranch Estate winery in 1995 and served as Vice-President of Vincor Canada.

At the festival, I asked McWatters what keeps him going for half a century making and promoting wine.

“There’s always something new in my life, as you know, Eric,” he said.

“I’m going into my 50th vintage and I created a wine called 50th Vintage to celebrate that.

“I feel blessed that I’ve been able to live the wine industry and watch it grow and flourish over the past 50 vintages.”

As expected, McWatters’ dreams are bigger than just making a new wine.

“We’re building a new winery in Penticton and we’re going to open it this spring.

“We bought a theatre complex and it was built in the mid 50s.

“And we are doing an expansion to it; the front of the house will be a whole wine and food experience.”

Part of the restored Pen-Mar Theatre will be home to a brand new winery production facility, tasting bar and retail shop, which will feature several special wines only available on the premises.

But there’s much more to McWatters’ latest project.

“We’re developing a whole commercial kitchen. We’re not calling it a restaurant but we do have a patio area outside.

“We’ll serve shared plates so people can sit and enjoy a flight of wines and share some food,” McWatters proudly explained.

“The smallest of the restored theatres will showcase local performing arts, as a way of giving back to the community.

“The example I use is, say we invite six to eight winemakers from the Okanagan that do a really good job of Riesling.

“And we do a seminar from nine to noon on a Saturday morning and let them come and talk about their philosophy and why they make their wine the way they do and what sets it apart from others and so on, and then do a tasting.

“People then would obviously pay to come and try those multiple products.”

“It’s going to be exciting.”

Since “retiring” in 2008, he has launched TIME Estate Winery, the McWatters Collection and co-developed ENCORE Vineyards Ltd. McWatters is also the founding chair of the BC Wine Institute, VQA Canada and the BC Wine Information Society.

LARKDALE, Arizona — Possibly the first metal that mankind discovered was copper. Like gold, it can be found in nuggets on the ground and it has a low melting point, likely appearing as shiny cooking-fire run-offs.

In modern times, copper produced wealth for Arizona, the “copper state,” and in particular for Senator W. A. Clark, known as “America’s Copper King.” He invested in developing large but awkwardly placed deposits in arid land now a two-hour drive south of Phoenix, putting in a railroad to move the ore and building not only smelters for mass production, but in 1912 America’s first company town, Clarkdale, to attract and house a workforce in what was the middle of nowhere.

Clarkdale was provided with avenues of well-built houses in everything from mock-Tudor to neo-classical styles, and the best of facilities, including the elegant and solidly built Spanish-colonial Clarkdale High School of 1928. Copper made Clark the richest man in America.

But in the 1950s the copper ran out and people began to move away.

In 2002, when copper-art aficionado Drake Meinke was looking for a place to put his collection on public display, there seemed no better site than a town built on copper, and its elegant but empty high school, then up for sale.

Once through the original copper-framed door of what is now the Arizona Copper Art Museum it quickly becomes apparent that this is no fifth-rate roadside attraction

brought artificially into existence by a backwater desperate for tourism dollars, but one worth serious consideration, though its obsession with a single subject borders on eccentricity.

The fascinating collection includes genuine Bronze Age (3600-1200 B.C.) artifacts, although the majority of the collection dates from the European Middle Ages onwards. It methodically covers every aspect of copper imaginable, from its chemistry to domestic and industrial uses and its role in causing disease. Ancient jewellery, vast amphorae of copper and copper slipper baths compete for attention with a hammered-copper ceiling, glassware coloured with copper salts and endless racks and shelves of other shiny items.

The ebullient Meinke himself often greets visitors and sets them off to follow a trail of copper footprints set in the floor. He pops up from time to time to add extra background information to already well-labelled displays, such as one of trench art from World War One. “This was my collection. I was in Europe and I bought all these things in France and Belgium—antique shops, markets, fairs, you name it. Along where the front was, primarily, like the Somme, Amiens, near Metz.

They were made by all of the soldiers.”

Over 500 First World War brass shell casings lie in shiny rows. Some of their copper content would have originated in the ground outside Clarkdale.

Kaufmanis goes out a champion Mark Booth

I

t was a storybook ending to Juliana Kaufmanis’ university volleyball career and she returned from the other end of the world to do it.

The 6-foot left-side hitter went out in grand style last weekend in Toronto as the UBC Thunderbirds captured their first national championship since 2013 with a four-set win over Canada West rival Alberta.

Kaufmanis was welcomed back to the UBC line-up in early January after the forestry major spent a semester at the University of Canterbury studying eco systems on the New Zealand coast.

She promptly resumed her prominent role on a veteran team that included her graduating roommate — nationals’ MVP Danielle Brisebois — and fourth-year Maggie Li. The final culminated a terrific year-long rivalry between the tournament’s No. 1 and No. 3 seeds. UBC swept the regular season series but the top ranked Pandas responded by winning the Canada West final.

UBC opened the nationals at Ryerson University with a four-set win against No. 6 Western, then produced a straight set victory over Trinity Western in an all-B.C. semi-final match-up. That set the stage for the final chapter against Alberta and UBC won a pair of tight games (25-22, 25-20) to

jump out to a commanding lead in the best-of-five affair. The Pandas answered with a dominating game four victory (25-13) but their momentum stopped there. UBC responded with a 25-20 match clinching win.

“It is an amazing way to finish my career,” said Kaufmanis. “I think (coach) Doug (Reimer) summed it up best when he said ourselves, Alberta and Trinity were three championship caliber teams. It was just our time.”

Kaufmanis starred on a McMath team that spent much of her Grade 12 year ranked No. 1 in the province, before being upset in the quarterfinals at the B.C. 4A Championships and settling

for fifth place. She also enjoyed plenty of success playing club volleyball — winning four straight provincial titles with the Vancouver Thunder which happens to be associated with the UBC women’s program.

When Kaufmanis arrived at the Point Grey campus, she was a freshman reserve as the Thunderbirds rolled to their sixth consecutive national championship.

The dynasty ended with a loss to Manitoba in the gold medal game the following year. UBC bowed out in the quarter-finals in 2015 and settled for fourth place in 2016. By this season, a hungry group of veteran players were determined to get over the hump.

“We just felt really good about ourselves from the very first game at nationals,” added Kaufmanis. “I think in the past, the pressure might have got to us a bit but not this time. We were so there for each other and everyone on our roster stepped up from start to finish.”

She will now focus on finishing her degree and continue to feed her volleyball appetite with the pro beach version of the game. She is currently partnered with Volleyball B.C. hall-of famer and former UBC star Liz Cordonier. Their schedule will include the Vancouver Open in July at Kits Beach.

“I can honestly say I was in awe of her when she asked to be her partner,” laughed Kaufmanis.

“It is a lot of fun playing in an awesome environment.”

or just the second time in franchise history, the Greater Vancouver Canadians have advanced to the B.C Major Midget Hockey League championship series.

The regional rep team is off to Prince George this weekend for a best-of-three

series with the regular season champion Cariboo Cougars, starting Friday afternoon.

The Canadians secured their first trip to the finals in eight years with a thrilling 5-3 victory Sunday over the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs in the third and deciding game.

the first time since I have been with this team and it’s very exciting for our program.”

The Canadians looked to be in a heap of trouble in their semi-final series opener on Friday night in Coquitlam.

The Chiefs jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead and the league’s second place team seemed poised to make short work of the No. 4 seed. However, captain Scott Atkinson put Greater Vancouver on the board late in the opening 20 minutes and the comeback was on.

The visitors scored three more times in the second period, led by a pair of power play goals from defenceman Owen Williams.

The Regina Pats prospect then completed his hat trick on another man advantage opportunity to break a 4-4 tie. Noah Kelly added a late insurance goal to close out a huge 6-4 victory.

A similar script unfolded in game two on Saturday night when the Chiefs made it 3-0 midway through the first period. Michael Araki-Young made it a two-goal game but there would be no big rally this time.

The hosts opened up a 5-1 lead and cruised to a 7-3 victory to force a deciding game. That proved to be a blessing in disguise according to Alalouf.

“Obviously game one was a real heart stopper but the pivotal point of the series was falling behind again the next night and not being able to come back. It showed the boys that, regardless of how much talent they have, they can’t keep falling behind like that and expect to win,” he said.

The coaching staff also changed up its strategy for the deciding game, break-

ing up the dangerous trio of top Western Hockey League prospects — Sasha Mutula, Henry Rybinski and Atkinson — for a more balanced approach. It resulted in not only a better start but fresher legs in the third period as Atkinson completed his hat trick to open up a 3-1 lead.

Rybinski made it 4-1 on the power play, before the Chiefs made it interesting with a pair of goals. An empty net goal from Kelly with 21 seconds remaining sealed one of the team’s biggest ever playoff wins.

The Canadians now head north, looking to thrive as underdogs again against a Cariboo team that went 34-5-1 in the regular season and swept all four league meetings. Greater Vancouver was missing seven regulars for its most recent visit to Prince George a month ago, including Atkinson, Rybinski and Williams.

The finalists have vastly different rosters.

The Cougars are loaded with experience with 11 1999-born players and have reached the finals the last two years.

The Canadians have just one 1999 in their line-up and lean on 15-and-16-year-olds with a good number headed to junior next season.

“The funny thing is our evaluation camp is March 31 and guys are asking each other if they are coming back or not while we are making this run,” laughed Alalouf. “We do have quite a few guys who are likely one and done here. That’s why we are going up there to win this thing.”

The series winner will host the Alberta Major Midget champion for a berth in the Telus Cup.
