few weeks back, the Richmond News was accused of reporting “fake news,” because we ran a story about the fact (not to be confused with an “alt fact”) that a McMath school trip to New York City had been cancelled due to the then-recent U.S. travel ban.

The students who are now looking for something else to do over spring break, or the parents who’ve had their deposits returned, can assure you there was nothing “fake” about the cancellation.

Even our accuser doesn’t actually challenge that reality; what he/she does say is that we only ran the story to foster anti-Trump sentiment. Ok, but even if one agreed with that opinion, which I don’t, is the story then fake?

One of the more interesting things about these curious times we’re living in is the lexicon that’s developing along side. We have “fake news,” “alternative facts,” “bubble filters” and “echo chambers.”

Speaking of echoes, you can almost hear the reverberations of George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984 — which, by the way, shot to the top of Amazon’s best seller list last month.

Orwellian terms such as Big Brother, thoughtcrime, Newspeak and doublethink were coined to not just describe but create certain realities — which brings me to echo chambers and bubble filters.

In the effort to “monetize the web,” (make money off it) website algorithms have been devised to track our every move online so advertising can be more accurately targeted.

Yes, it’s a bit Big Brother-ish, but if you’ve been online looking for a new sofa, you may well be interested in a coffee table to match.

The challenge, when it comes to news and analysis, is that soon we’re funneled only the news (fake or otherwise) we’ve shown an interest in.

I’m reminded of a cartoon where two dogs are at a computer; a middle-aged man sits in his recline in the next room. One dog says to the other, “I used to fetch his paper, now I just forward articles I know he’ll agree with.”

It’s the “...I know he’ll agree with,” that has created these filter bubbles and echo chambers in which people only read what will reinforce their own beliefs.

So what’s Gateway Theatre got to do with this? Gateway’s upcoming production The Pipeline Project (see page 15) is a show about one of the most divisive debates in Canada. It brings those news headlines into the theatre, so right there we have an element of cross-pollination. As well, half the show is a staged production, while the other half is a live interview with individuals on various sides of the argument, followed by a conversation with the audience.

I realize one play won’t repair the dangerous disconnect we’re currently seeing, but nor should it be underestimated. Surely, the best antidote to fake news is a real experience.

Dear Editor, Seeing a sea of blue and yellow toques amass as we proceeded out for the walk was a moving sight.

On Saturday, Feb. 25, about 200 people participated in Richmond’s inaugural Coldest Night of the Year Walk to fundraise for Chimo Community Services.

The funds raised will go towards programs serving the homeless, hungry and hurting in Richmond. We had a goal of $25,000, but with the amazing support of staff, volunteers, walkers and our two wonderful lead

sponsors, Shafik Ladha and Vancity (No. 3 Road Community Branch and Blundell Community Branch), we were able to raise more than $32,000.

The manner in which the community rallied together is something I will not soon forget.

Thank you once again to all those that participated — I am humbled by your generosity.

The best remedy for older patients? (Is it pills?)

The Portland Press Herald newspaper earlier this week published an article about an interesting study from the Journal of the American Medical Association (“JAMA”). The issue studied was what Doctors were offering as remedies to various problems reported by their patients.

Apparently, older Americans are being prescribed an unhealthy combination of powerful drugs at a worrisome rate. The JAMA study says that the number of retirement age Americans taking at least 3 psychiatric drugs doubled from 2004 to 2013 and it tripled in rural areas. And about half of the seniors appeared to not have the diagnoses to justify it. I presume this may be similar in Canada.

The study goes on to suggest that it’s all because of the economies of health care; that Doctors can’t give all patients the time and care they need and drugs appear to be the “easiest” solution. The article suggests Doctors ought to prescribe psychotherapy or stress management.

I suggest that where possible, family members “put their feet down” and ask the Physician for additional remedies to pills, whether therapy or something else. A Doctor may not know a given patient as well as a child or spouse.

Such a person might be best suited to ask for alternative solutions to specific problems their parents or spouses will have.

Religion, LGBT rights both matters of faith Dear Editor, My mom recently asked me to go to a rally to oppose the LGBTQ policy implementation into the education curriculum.

I did, indeed, have an opinion regarding the matter due to the aggressiveness of recent changes. However, for some reason I didn’t want to go.

At first, I thought the reason was because I prefered to stay low-profile and not be involved in public activities. However, after much thought I realized the reason was I am scared because I know it would be social suicide for me.

I fear that, if I were to just show my face in such an event, my picture would be taken and posted everywhere on social media claiming that I’m a homophobe and Donald Trump supporter, or something.

These days, political correctness and activism is on such extreme levels that having an opinion not following the mainstream media results in unjustified backlash and condemnation. I also realized the irony of this matter.

Thirty years ago, if one showed support for the LGBTQ community, they would be condemned.

Now, if one were to suggest a milder approach with LGBTQ integration into our education system, then they are condemned.

Also, I recognize that religion and LGBTQ rights are different. However, LGBTQ rights are a set of beliefs in the freedom of choice between people, and religion is also a freedom of choice in faith people may hold.

While LGBTQ people say that their orientation is part of who they are, religious people also say that their belief makes them who they are.

From this I consider that both LGBTQ rights and religion are a matter of faith, which some people believe and some do not. But both should be respected equally.

So why is it that religion was removed from the education curriculum but now LGBTQ changes are being aggressively implemented in education?

Is that not ironic and possibly hypocritical, since education should be a place void of agendas and subjective values?

After these thoughts, I informed my mom that while people around her age may have similar views, and thus she will not receive unjust backlash for her stated opinions, in my age demographic there are a different set of taboo opinions.

One of them is stating an opinion regarding LGBTQ integration into education contrary to the mainstream.

Embarrassed by parent group Dear Editor, Re: “Parents: LGBT policy could convert straight teens,” News, March 1.

I’ve never written in before, however, after reading today’s article on the LGBTQ policy in Richmond, I felt so enraged, I had to comment.

I’m embarrassed for Colleen Howu and who she represents. To reveal that she not only thinks being gay is catching and needs more scientific evidence, makes me feel immensely sorry for any children she may have.

I have two children in the Richmond public school system. I wish we had more dialogue about LGBTQ issues in the schools. I teach my children they can love whomever they want and I love them as they are. Why would any child “choose” to be gay? What a choice.

Choosing discrimnation? Potential violence/ death? Employment disadvantages? No one chooses their sexuality.

The fact that Howu brings up science made me laugh out loud. What could be less scientific than “traditional family values”? Someone who takes the Bible literally (scary in itself), cannot then say they need more scientific evidence on how sexuality works as a reason not to support LGBTQ policies. Have faith that gay exists. Have faith that being trans is real.

Hiding behind the ‘policy for everyone’ thing is weak. We need to take a stand in Richmond to show our LGBTQ youth that we’ve got their backs. LGBTQ is our modern civil rights movement. Are we moving forward or backwards?

I apologize for Chinese parents Dear Editor, Re: “Parents: LGBT policy could convert straight teens,” News, March 1.

I felt compelled to write in to speak out on behalf of Chinese parents in Richmond, as it seems only a small minority of our voices are being represented in this story.

Coming from a Chinese background, I know firsthand that this misguided response to the LGBTQ policy approved by the school board is due to a deeply-rooted fear of homosexuality and other sexual orientations within the Chinese culture.

While everyone is entitled to their opinion, it absolutely should not come at the expense of victims and further discrimination against these young people.

Canada, and therefore Richmond, is a pluralistic society, so I applaud the school board for finally stepping up to recognize a need in the community and for reinforcing tolerance and diversity.

For this group of parents to somehow feel that being gay is a choice or an opinion or needs scientific evidence simply reflects the fear of their own children being gay and this fear cannot be projected on to our public schools.

We’ve come too far as a progressive society to go back to the antiquated mentality of the past as we see our southern neighbours doing.

As a parent, I also welcome the public schools reinforcing what I teach my own kids about compassion.

So I apologize to those teens who so bravely stepped up to share how horrifically they have been treated at school. You are not alone. Thousands of Richmond parents support you.

CN spokesperson Kate Fenske said malfunctions on Feb. 22 were a result of maintenance work, while a series of

rail gates failures that blocked Alderbridge Way and Westminster Highway in late January and early February were a result of snow and ice.

The City of Richmond said the early failures resulted from salt and brine in the metal tracks sending false signals to the gate control.

Similar issues were reported throughout the Lower Mainland, said spokesperson Ted Townsend.

Fenske said the gates operated as designed, as they will come down as a fail-safe measure, when minor is-

sues are detected.

The problems upset rush hour commutes who were already delayed by inclement weather. Furthermore, communications between CN and the city, as well as the media, were not expedient.

“CN has been in touch with the City of Richmond to discuss their concerns,” said Fenske.

Townsend said if the issue happens again, commuters should call CN Rail’s maintenance line, at 1-800863-4883.

The British Columbia Legislative Internship Program was established in January 1976, patterned after the Parliamentary Internship Program introduced in the Canadian House of Commons in 1969. Faculty members of the then three major universities in British Columbia initiated the program.

The program continues to be advised by the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, the University of Victoria and the University of Northern British Columbia.

The program is sponsored by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, the Honourable Linda Reid and is open to B.C. residents who have obtained their first Bachelor’s Degree within the immediate two year period prior to the program start date. Applicants must be either a Canadian citizen or have landed immigrant status. The 25 week program runs from early January to the end of June each year and is presently in its 41st year!

The program offers an opportunity for Canadian university graduates to supplement their academic training by observing the daily workings of the Legislature first hand, and to provide Members of the Legislative Assembly with additional assistance during the parliamentary session. The ministry and caucus assignments are designed to provide exposure to public policy-making and legislative processes. Interns will acquire skills and knowledge they can apply in their chosen careers and future life experiences. In the long term, it is expected that Interns will contribute to a greater public understanding and appreciation of our system of parliamentary government.

The Port Mann will, reportedly, not start turning a profit until 2025 now. It sees more traffic than is projected at the Massey crossing and cost less ($3.3 billion) at the time of opening (although it has $407 million in operating debt).

Meanwhile, the budget provides no funding over the next three years for a new hospital tower.

“I can assure you were committed to working with the (Richmond Hospital) Foundation to develop a new hospital tower,” said Richmond Centre MLA Teresa Wat, who stressed that such projects take time and it could be up to seven years until new hospital doors open.

“There are so many hospitals that need replacement and there’s a process in place,” said Wat. A concept plan has been submitted to the Ministry of Health, noted Wat. Another sore point for Richmond residents and most parents has been delays in seismic upgrades for 24 schools.

De Jong’s ministry told the News, to date, two schools are in the business case stage.

Other social service demands in Richmond include increasing disability rates in line with inflation. Last year, the lack of increases were protested by members of the Richmond Centre for Disability (last month the government increased the disability subsidy $50. Inclusion BC, states the assistance rate had increased by $120 since 2001.)

Wages are also a concern. This week at Richmond city council, Deanna Ogle, representing the Living Wage for Families Campaign, said many children are living below the poverty line in Richmond. A living wage of about $20 per hour would help alleviate this, she said. The government recently announced minimum wage would increae 50 cents to $11.35, in September.

head of a review of housing bylaws on farmland, a recent ruling by the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) highlights a past decision made by many Richmond city councillors that runs contrary to protecting farmland, according to the ALC. The ALC has overturned a decision by most councillors that would have allowed a well-known east Richmond farming family to realign/ subdivide seven of its properties in order to create two additional residential lots.

In March, 2016, council voted 7-2 in favour of the proposal by Mayberry Farms Ltd., with councillors Carol Day and Harold Steves voting against it.

was a “small win” for protecting farmland ahead of a critical review by council of housing regulations on protected agricultural land.

After council sent the application to the ALC, the South Coast Panel ruled on Feb. 27: “The subdivision of agricultural land for residential purposes does not preserve farmland for agricultural uses, nor does the [parceling] of agricultural land into small lots encourage farming; rather, the Panel finds that the creation of small lots within the ALR can restrict the feasibility of some types of agricultural operations.”

Day said the subdivision could have eventually allowed for two more large mansions to be built on the properties, because Richmond, currently, has few bylaws limiting how big a home can be on the Agricultural Land Reserve.

Applicant Randy May had applied for the subdivision to divide the estate amongst

family members (family succession planning).

“The Panel acknowledges that inter-generational transfer and family succession planning can be challenging; however, the Panel notes that this can be achieved by means other than the subdivision of agricultural land,” concluded the ALC in its decision, which may be appealed by the applicant.

The News understands that the Panel is aware of Richmond’s bylaws that allows an ALR home’s square footage to be 60 per cent of the lot size, which has given rise to some 22,000-squarefoot homes.

Day said she hopes council shows support to the ALC decision.

Council’s willingness to divide the properties meant foregoing the general policy of not facilitating more residential lots on farms and, instead, trusting the promise of one of Richmond’s longest-standing farming families, the May family, that the subdivision is necessary for farming purposes and the land will remain in the family.

“If we’re going to support farming, we need to support farmers,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie, at the time.

Meanwhile, Coun. Bill McNulty criticized the city’s Agricultural Advisory Committee for opposing the proposal.

City staff had noted that nothing prohibits the residential lots from eventually being sold to a third party at a later date.

Yet, in December, 2016, it is for similar reasons that council unanimously denied realtor/farmer Dale Badh the opportunity to realign two of his properties on Westminster Highway.

Instead of one small lot and one large, 20-acre lot, Badh wanted two 10-acre lots.

City staff noted that this would allow for the building of two large mega mansions, instead of one. Badh insisted this was not the intention.

The Badh decision came after significant media attention to the problem of mega mansions on farmland. Last November, council directed staff to come up with solutions to the issue. Prior to

this, from 2010 to 2015, the average house size on farmland in new applications rose about 50 per cent, from 8,557-square-feet to 12,583-square-feet.

The Ministry of Agriculture recommends farm houses no larger than 5,382-square-feet.

A public hearing is forthcoming on the matter.

The police are asking the public to look out for missing 21-year-old Parker Grieve, who was reported missing by his family on Feb. 23, and last seen in east Richmond.

He is Caucasian, five feet ten inches tall and weighs 130 pounds. Grieve also has brown eyes, short brown hair

and he may be wearing a black hoodie, green-beige jeans and white trainers.

Police say he is known to frequent the Downtown Eastside in Vancouver.

“Parker’s family and the police are concerned for his well-being. Please let us know that you are safe,” said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

Anyone with information as to Grieve’s whereabouts is urged to contact their local police.

he City of Richmond is asking the federal and provincial governments for up to $7.5 million to pay for a realigned River Road, from Gilbert (Dinsmore Bridge) to Cambie roads.

Director of Transportation Victor Wei says, in a recent report to city council, the new $11.3 million road (River Parkway) is part of a larger project that will see the establishment of a new waterfront park adjacent to it, once the industrial properties are purchased by the city and demolished, starting as early as 2024, when existing leases begin to expire.

Since new residential buildings are expected to be built between the park and No. 3 Road, the project would otherwise be funded by new development charges.

However, additional provincial and federal taxpayer’s money would mean the city could lower such charges.

With some funding limitations, the Government of B.C.’s infrastructure programs are said to be a potential source of funding, as is the Government of Canada’s New Building Canada Fund, which provides money to projects that Wei argues River Parkway qualifies for.

For instance, grant money can be issued to projects that redevelop old industrial land, provide for recreation, promote tourism and add to public transit infrastructure.

The road would be a vital bus link between Aberdeen Centre Canada Line station and

condos in the Oval Village area. The road will eventually be expanded to Capstan Way, as well.

The project may eventually see a pedestrian and cycling bridge connect BCIT on Sea Island to the foot of Cambie, at the train station.

A similar arrangement was made between the federal government and the City of Richmond to widen No. 2 Road, south of Steveston Highway.

n No. 2 Road gets $3.5M pipe

Canada provided Richmond with $3.5 million to put toward the $7.3 million project.

However, more recently, upon assessing the new road layout, city engineers determined the large drainage pipe along No. 2 Road requires replacement, at a cost of $3.7 million.

The money will come from the city’s public works reserves and was approved by council on Monday.

Coun. Harold Steves said this is a reality for Richmond, which once was lined with ditches.

“I had a chuckle about this. We had a great debate [50 years ago] about whether we would cover the ditches,” said Steves.

“We weren’t sure if [the box culverts] were going to work or not because of the clay soils.

So, I’m glad to see we’re maintaining them,” said Steves.

No. 2 Road will be widened, from the highway to London Road, to allow for street parking and a shared cycling and pedestrian path.

Richmond Nature Park:

Everyone in Richmond knows all about Richmond Nature Park, right?

We suspect there may well be quite a few out there who don’t, or haven’t been there in years. The 200-acre park, on Westminster Highway at No. 5 Road, is a gem of a place to take the kids, no matter weather (within reason, of course). As well as hosting regular events (see Events), the raised peat bog habitat has four walking trails, totalling five kilometres, that are open any day, providing visitors with self-guided tours and the chance to encounter plants and animals in bog, forest and pond habitats and a “trip back in time, more than 13,000 years to the end of the Ice Age.” The shortest trail, an elevated boardwalk around the park pond, is wheelchair accessible and only takes 30 minutes. All other trails are soft-surfaced with wood chips and are well-marked.

A free trail guide is available in the Nature House, along with activities and kid-friendly information.

The park, however, is a very fragile environment, so dogs and other pets are not permitted and visitors are requested to remain n on the marked trails. Also, no plants, plant parts or animals may be removed from the park.

It’s not original, but sometimes you can’t see the woods for the trees, or the dyke for the bikes, but you really can’t escape the beauty of the 6.3 kilometre West Dyke Trail, from Steveston to Terra Nova, or vice versa.

Once the kids have gotten over er the shock of what they they’re re doing for the morning/afternoon, dust the bikes down (or skoosh some WD40 on the brakes/chain) and get going. You can tempt with a picnic stop at the Terra Nova Adventure Playpark (see below) if you’re going north, or an ice-cream and/or fish ‘n’ chips at Pajos at Garry Point Park, if you’re headed south.

Either way takes you about 20-30 minutes, depending on the age of your “team” and how many whine stops you may take.

The historic cannery in Steveston is another obvious target during the break and it may also produce some squint faces among the offspring upon suggestion. However, such as with biking, we are confident the kids will perk up once inside this fascinating Parks Canada building, which is free to enter due to the country’s 150th birthday celebrations.

During spring break, there are many interactive exhibits about Canada’s West Coast fishing history and you can pick up a Parks Canada Xplorers booklet, with activities for kids 6-11. Also, don’t miss the historic canning line in action, with equipment revving up during machine demos at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays.

Fishing:

We’re not talking about taking a charter out on the Fraser River here; simply throwing your rod in the river’s south or northh arm and while away the hours.

If you have your own gear,, there are five, major fishingg locations in Richmond Richmond. Each of these piers, platforms, and floats offers a unique view of the Fraser River and picnic tables can be found at each location.

Best of all, if you’re under 16, you don’t even need a permit to fish and if mom or dad wants to join in, it’s only $10 for a day permit ($5 for seniors) online from Env.Gov.bc.ca/fw/fish/ licences/.

Along the south arm: Imperial Landing; No. 2 Road Fishing Pier and Float; No. 3 Road Sports Fishing Pier; Along the north arm: No. 7 Road Pier and Mitchell Island Pier.

Fishing licenses are required to fish from the Fraser River’s edge at all times (for those age 16 and up) including off of any pier, dock or float.

Public art tour:

The City of Richmond has more than 50 public art pieces to view, located all over Richmond.

On the city’s website, you can print off a location map and do a self-guided tour with the kids,, perhaps encourage them to come up with their own inter-pretations of each piece.

If you don’t want to drive around the city, get back on the bikes and cycle around the collection in and around Steveston Village (check location map for details).

Some of the most popular public art pieces include: - Minoru Horse, a sculpture of the racehorse Minoru, owned by King Edward VII and nd winner of the 1909 Epsom Derby. It’s located at Minoru Park, the former site of the Minoru Race Track.

- Water Sky Garden, comprised of a red, zigzag bridge, a water garden, and two very large net sculptures, this piece of art is located outside of the Richmond Olympic Oval.

- Steveston Fishermen’s Memorial, a memorial for fishermen lost at sea consisting of a tall net needle and a bronze mural of fish boats and sea life located at Garry Point Park.

- Dog Party, a group of whimsical steel figures of dogs reflecting the light-hearted atmosphere of the off-leash dog area in the park east of the intersection of No. 3 Road & Dyke Road.

If you and/or your kids are fascinated by planes, the Canadian Museum of Flight in Langley — a non-profit, volunteer-driven museum dedicated to restoring, preserving and showcasing Canada’s rich aviation heritage — should make a cameo appearance on any parent’s spring break to-do do list.

In the early 1970s, a group off aviation i ti enthusiasts th h i t made d a move to stop the exodus of historic aircraft leaving Canada for the U.S. and Europe and pooled their resources, to acquire as many of these aircraft as possible. The museum and restoration site is open year round and houses more than 25 aircraft, both static and flying.

The aircraft range from a WWII Handley Page Hampden to a T-33 Silver Star. While you’re in Langley, why not head a little north and make a day of it in historic Fort Langley, where you can discover the roots of not only Langley, but British Columbia itself.

The surrounding area was originally inhabited by the Kwantlen First Nations people, who fished, hunted and traded here with other Coast Salish nations. In 1827, the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) set up a trading post in what is now Derby Reach Regional Park. Fur trading and d salmon canning became staple industries at Fort Langley.

Last century, the Britannia Mine Museum, just south of Squamish, was a working mine. North Vancouver:

North Van has a plethora of outdoor stuff going on, but the best value – it’s totally free – has to be Lynn Canyon Park and its suspension bridge.

Way cheaper than its slightly bigger cousin at Capilano, the Lynn Canyon version is still scary enough at 50 metres above Lynn Creek - the height of a 15-storey building – to get the hard-toplease younger ones excited.

And Lynn Canyon Park itself is one of the gems of the District of North Vancouver, with a forested park that features stunning creek and waterfall views and hiking trails through the temperate rainforest. With more than 400,000 visitors annually, the hatchery is a popular spot for tourists and, the good news again is that, it’s free.

It has an interpretive centre, with a self-guided tour, where you can learn about and see fish develop from eggs to juvenile stage and when they are released to the river in spring. There’s also the Fish Ladder, where, depending on the season, you may see juvenile salmon and trout in the display aquaria or mature returning salmon in the fish ladder.

In the spring, the best species to view is the steelhead adults, coho juveniles and chinook juveniles.

And once you’ve had enough of salmon, go for a walk/hike in Capilano Regional River Park’s many trails and picnic areas.

A

ll the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood is a book that will stay with me for years to come.

I have never read anything like it, and don’t expect to ever find something like it again.

Be aware this book will make you lose sleep and wreak havoc with your emotions.

Wavy, born in the backseat of a stranger’s car to a meth dealer and a mentally ill mother, is not what anyone would call normal.

At eight, she rarely speaks —“Don’t you ever talk to people! You don’t talk to anyone!”— or eats — “Don’t eat that! That’s dirty!”

She spends her days struggling to raise her little brother, surviving her mother’s moods and avoiding her father.

The one thing that brings her peace is the starry night sky above the fields behind her house.

Then, everything changes when Kellen, a giant tattooed ex-con and thug for her father, crashes into her life.

For both, it’s love at first sight. What follows is a tale that spans around fifteen years told from the perspectives of Wavy, Kellen, Wavy’s brother, her cousin, her aunt, her teachers, friends and her father’s thugs.

It is a tale of love, woe, sadness, happiness, violence and compassion; a tale of all the ugly and wonderful things humans do to each other.

This book will make you uncomfortable. It certainly made me uncomfortable.

It will make you question the world and yourself. The strength of it lies in the author’s refusal to force a view or opinion on the reader. Greenwood simply tells the story in beautiful language and brings the characters to life so vividly they live in your memory long after you close the book. It is up to the reader to pass judgement, to feel and react.

he latest production at Gateway Theatre’s Studio B, The Pipeline Project, is an unconventional one that takes its cues directly from the news headlines and offers up the opportunity to stimulate discussion around the pros and cons of resource extraction.

Based on the book Extract, The Pipeline Wars, which is a compilation of reporting by online news organization Vancouver Observer, the play looks at the impact and general opinion of Enbridge’s Northern Gateway Pipeline.

“We’re very grateful to the Gateway Theatre, because I think people were, at first, a little nervous of taking it on.

It’s brave to have a political piece like this,” Haberlin said, adding the theatre’s artistic director, Jovanni Sy, showed wisdom in trying to expand Gateway’s audience by booking her show. “What he is doing is drawing people who don’t traditionally see theatre to the theatre by engaging them in conversations that are very front of mind and ripped right from the headlines.

“And I think it’s a model for taking on a conversation of any topic. The big challenge is that it takes a long time to synthesize what you want to say when it’s a subject as complex as pipelines,” Haberlin said. “But it helps open up dialogue, which, in an ideal world, theatre does. It gets us all into a room together and have a conversation that is meaningful.”

While the idea of co-working is not new — there are other Network Hub locations in Vancouver and Whistler — the fact Richmond lacked one has lured local clients to the River Road location and away from the commute into Vancouver, which can often be fraught with congestion.

“We’re a little bit off the main road,” Ng said. “We like that. It’s a little oasis, a walkable distance from the Canada Line, but still close to things.”

Cost for booking access to the hub is $95 for 10 working days — a fee that can be transferred to the other hubs in Vancouver and Whistler.

For that, clients get 24/7, keyless access to the second storey office area that has commanding views of the north arm of the Fraser River in east Richmond.

There are communal desks with workstations, a pair of phone booths where you can take private phone calls, meeting rooms where groups can be assembled for an additional, hourly charge and a social space that mimics a coffee shop ambience.

“Traditionally, co-working attracted a lot of people who were working from home or coffee shops,” Ng said. “The last five years I worked out of coffee shops, so that part of me is still very much alive. That’s why we designed a section to look that way.”

A full-time office manager can direct calls to the hub and mail is collected daily.

“This can be your business address,” Ng said. “If you’re not in every day, we will notify you that you’ve got mail.”

While the business is still finding and defining its client base as it shifts and changes, Ng said there is one constant.

“We wanted to build the space around the people,” he said, “and kinda listen in and find out what would help propel people in their careers. But the first step is to get people together.”

The David Suzuki Foundation is currently looking for volunteers in Richmond and four other cites in Canada to become Butterflyway Rangers, to help create more butterfly-friendly neighbourhoods.

A Butterflyway is described as a highway for pollinators such as butterflies, bees and other beneficial bugs. Imagine growing gardens that will encourage, rather than discourage, bugs to eat your plants.

Because habitat loss has caused a population decline in butterfly species in B. C., the goal of the Butterflyway Project is to provide food and shelter for pollinators by creating a network of wildflower gardens, big and small, through neighbourhoods across the province.

We gardeners often think of ways to attract pollinators, such as butterflies, to our flowers and plants that provide nectar, while helping with our food production. What Butterflyway does is encourage the planting of host plants where butterflies will lay their eggs and their caterpillars will eat the plants.

The David Suzuki Foundation is recruiting Butterflyway Rangers for this project until March 20. Training will be provided in April at different locations throughout Richmond.

Richmond Butterflyway Rangers will then be sent back into their neighbourhoods with a mission to plant native wildflowers and shrubs in backyards, front yards, local schools, parks — guerrilla gardening at its best.

Once the Butterflyway Ranger has planted at least a dozen host plantings, the David Suzuki Foundation will give formal recognition to that Ranger on the Suzuki Foundation website and the Ranger’s patches of gardens will be plotted on the national Butterflyway Project Map. The Foundation has already done this in Toronto, so there is a map showing the host plants there.

t’s the biggest day of the Richmond Adult Soccer Association season with a trio of high-profile matches and an opportunity to further build camaraderie among the teams and players in the all-city circuit.

“Soccer Sunday” at Minoru Park starts at 11 a.m. with the RASA All-Star Game, followed by the Don Taylor League Cup at 1 p.m. The action concludes with the Masters Cup final at 3 p.m. All three matches will take place on the Minoru Oval.

The 56th annual Taylor League Cup final culminates a league-wide tournament that began back in October and offers a provincial cup berth to the winning side.

A random draw ensures intriguing match-ups from teams in the RASA’s First, Second and Masters Divisions. The Cup was named after Taylor — the association’s first-ever president who served on the executive for 25 years.

Following semi-final matches on Tuesday night, the All Blacks will take on the Jugadores in the championship game. The All Blacks slipped past West Coast 4-3, while the Jugadores defeated AC Richmond 3-1 in a battle of the top four teams in the RASA First Division.

“The League Cup is always an exciting tournament for our association,” said RASA president Steve Valenzuela. “Teams tend to bring an extra level of intensity to it. They are all trying to demonstrate their

skill and strength with the hopes of winning the ultimate prize – a berth in the Provincial Cup. I’m sure both teams will bring an elevated level of competition.

The Masters Cup final features the top two teams in the over 35 division.

Richmond Old Blacks/Flying Beaver and Heatherbrae Masters/F.K.Nikola Tesla were slated to meet in the semi-finals Thursday night.

“We added this to the Soccer Sunday lineup two years ago,” explained Valenzuela. “Most of our Masters players have young families who don’t often get out see their dad play because we play at 9 p.m. on Thursdays during the season. This allows the players’ families to come out and cheer on dad. It also allows Masters to be part of the celebrations.”

Soccer Sunday commences with the League All-Star Game, featuring the top talent from all divisions. The team managers were selected by the board as an award for their contribution to the association. Club Ireland’s Jim Brady and Knight’s Ian McKenzie have been given the managerial honours.

“It’s really exciting to see our top players compete,” added Valenzuela. “We try to provide our membership a fun, exciting environment to play in and the All-Star Game is one the events that helps us achieve that goal.”

aul Pedersen was doing a little diamond hunting on a crisp but at least not snowy night at Hugh Boyd Athletic Park.

The Steveston resident and UBC women’s team assistant coach was evaluating talent at the Richmond Girls Soccer Assocation’s inaugural College Showcase game. The friendly, between the organization’s U18 (Richmond United) and U17 (Richmond Force) Division One sides, was an opportunity for post-secondary programs to see potential recruits in a live game-action environment. The match was also filmed and will be sent out to schools that were not in attendance.

Pedersen, along with the rest of the UBC coaching staff that is headed by

Jesse Symons, estimates they take in on average of 10 games each weekend.

With the launch of the new B.C. Premier Soccer League (HPL) season, it would seem like the logic place to find university and college prospects but not so fast says Pedersen.

“I can say with 100 percent certainty there are hidden gems out there and that’s why it’s important for us to get out to games as much as possible. On this 2000 (born) Richmond team alone there are four or five kids that should be playing in the B.C. Premier League.

For obvious reasons they are not and it’s great Richmond Girls Soccer put this game together for us to come out and watch,” he said.

The College Showcase is one of several new initiatives launched by the RGSA executive as they look to provide opportunities for its

graduating players to continue on with the “beautiful game.”

UBC is one of the powerhouse programs in the country and typically is looking for a recruiting class of five to six players each season. The Thunderbirds’ current roster feature RSGA products Emma Kallner and Amelia Crawford. However, UBC’s commitment goes beyond its own best interests.

“We have the theory, and it was Jesse who brought this into our culture, that there is a place for every girl to play at the post-secondary level,” explained Pedersen. “It may not be with us but we want to help these kids achieve that goal. It’s a special thing to be playing for a postsecondary school.”

Pedersen’s interest in the College Showcase also went past his UBC scouting duties. He is set to take over the head coaching reigns

of the powerhouse McMath senior girls program this

coming season.

“There are probably 10

kids out here who go to McMath,” Pedersen smiled.
