t’s fitting that the week of Pink Shirt Day should kick off with a school board meeting where trustees — finally — voted to develop a policy to better educate staff and students about the LGBTQ community.

Richmond was slow off the mark on this one. In fact, ours is the only school district in the Lower Mainland, apart from Abbotsford, that doesn’t have a code that specifically addresses discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Now we can say we’re inching up to Chilliwack when it comes to progressive policies.

Sarcasm aside, this was an important moment for some. I spoke to one of the teens who was at the meeting to support the policy.

It was inspiring to see her sense of accomplishment. “We won; it was worth it.”

She was particularly impressed with the school superintendent, who, I’m told, delivered an eloquent and impassioned speech about why creating a policy is due. Knowing the Super’s got your back has got to go a long way for any student — especially one that doesn’t walk the mean line.

But what was an eye-opener for this teen was the fact there was also a powerful lobby opposing her right to be heard and valued as a gay person in her school community.

Among the rainbow flags and pink shirts was the Parents Care Group, who heckled in protest, some claiming such a policy will lead to perverts in school bathrooms.

“I’ve heard about this. I’ve heard that people say these things, but I’d never actually seen it before. McMath is pretty good. I’ve never experienced this kind of thing, personally.”

Interesting.

A gay teen goes through five years of high school in Richmond without encountering bullying or derision due to her sexual orientation — until she attends a school board meeting.

But the Parents Care Group have their sympathizers; trustees Jonathan Ho and Alice Wong voted against the motion.

Their argument is that the school district already has a policy against discrimination — of any kind. Why should the LGBTQ community get special treatment? The answer, of course, is that the LGBTQ community has already been singled out for “special treatment” in the form of abuse and oppression.

Let’s remember why it’s called Pink Shirt Day — because a boy wore a pink shirt to school and was bullied for being gay.

I don’t believe these anti-policy folks want to see gay or transgender kids bullied, but nor do they want to see them fully accepted or their reality exposed or celebrated.

And to keep LGBTQ youth silenced and marginalized is far more damaging than stealing lunch money.

Well intended, but do you also realize you are giving a rate cut to hundreds of millionaires living in Richmond who do not declare their worldwide income?

How else do you think people afford $3 million homes in the Thompson neighbourhood on federally-declared income of $26,000?

Six months ago, the BC Liberals said foreign buyers were not influencing the real estate market.

Now, they’re giving an MSP break to millionaires who don’t need it, at the same time taxing to death those who live and work here.

Rail crossing needs fix Dear Editor, Another night, another horrendous commute back into Richmond due to the never-ending, malfunctioning railway crossing arms at Alderbridge/Hwy. 91 and Shell Road.

This has been an ongoing issue that occurs at least once or twice a month (it’s happened twice in the past two weeks this month), yet nobody does anything to fix it. CN Rail doesn’t seem to care, nor does the city.

Hundreds of us trying to get anywhere near our destination in Richmond this evening (Wednesday) were stuck in gridlock at every possible route in from the highway or Knight Street.

I find it laughable that we’re told to shut our engines off when a train is crossing, yet the City of Richmond doesn’t do anything to fix the malfunctioning crossing arms that has us all idling away for hours longer than any train would have us wait.

Dear Editor, The conflicting reasons for Richmond’s (and the Lower Mainland’s) high cost of housing will continue to be presented in a cloud of ambiguity with statistics and facts that do not reflect the whole picture.

Local developers and those in the real estate industry are continually suggesting that the solution to Richmond’s housing affordability crisis would be increasing the supply of homes on the market.

Would this suggestion really help the local residents of Richmond or is it just another means of creating lucrative investment opportunities for the wealthy?

Do we really believe that the motivation of developers is to flood the market with more product for the sole purpose of creating affordable housing for the average working family?

According to the 2016 Census data, “residential” dwellings in Richmond have increased by 8.9 per cent since 2011, whereas the population has only increased by 4.1 per cent during the same period of time. Let’s assume each new “dwelling” housed an average of 2.2 residents. Given this data, it would suggest to me that the current new housing supply is already well ahead of demand as far as

population growth is concerned.

From a real estate developer/ investor standpoint, the housing supply is still seriously lagging behind.

What constitutes a “non-resident unoccupied dwelling”? How many dwellings are registered under the name of a Canadian resident or a landed immigrant and yet were purchased using undeclared, taxfree earnings from a non-resident?

This is information Census would never collect, nor would it be volunteered by any participant.

Even accurate data for Richmond’s population numbers are inconsistent. The City of Richmond website claims the current estimated population in 2017 is 218,307 and yet the Feb. 17 Richmond News article states, “Richmond’s official population inched closer to 200,000 people, according to the 2016 Census.

Did over 18,000 newcomers arrive in the last year?

The 2011 National Housing Survey rated Richmond as the “poorest” city in the Lower Mainland based on annual family income data supplied by Revenue Canada. One has to wonder how the city will rank in 2016. Will it matter?

City seeks input on potential updates to Farmland Housing Regulations Public Open House and LetsTalkRichmond.ca Council recently authorized public consultation regarding possible updates to farmland housing regulations. Seismic upgrades need a shake n Richmond Schools Stand United’s Kim Nowitsky is calling for the government to move ahead with seismic mitigation work on local schools that require the upgrades.

Dear Editor, Many Richmond parents are increasingly troubled knowing that there has still not been any funding announcements for seismic work in Richmond. The number of H1 schools in our city has quietly been increased to a total of 16.

The H1 rating is the most severe rating a school building can receive. The number of these buildings in Richmond is predicted to rise as more schools are being reassessed and moved from the H2 to H1 category.

In conjunction to this, the last seismic mitigation project completed was in 2011 and more shockingly there have only been two schools upgraded in over 10 years in Richmond!

As you can imagine, these facts do not sit well with Richmond parents. Our group (Richmond Schools Stand United) is working tirelessly to inform parents so they keep questioning why our Richmond schools are deliberately being ignored.

To describe the situation in Richmond as dire would be an understatement. Over 8,000 children attend these H1 schools and half of all our schools (25) are classified as high risk, either H1, H2 or H3. While other districts receive funding and upgrades, our schools remain on the long list of to-dos.

I would also like to address the Mitigation Reports published by the government. Up until April 2016, these reports included the seismic rating of each of the schools.

These ratings are no longer included on these public reports, so many parents do not have access to information regarding the safety of their child’s school.

We can imagine that these ratings have been removed because the B.C. government is not meeting it’s upgrading targets, and in cases like Richmond, more and more schools are falling into the most dangerous category as years of inaction pass by. We strongly feel it’s a parent’s right to know whether their child’s school will completely fail in an earthquake.

Therefore, in the spirit of transparency, we publicly request to receive Mitigation Reports from our MLAs with full disclosure of each school’s rating across the province of B.C. Also, we urge that the government act swiftly to release funding to commence multiple seismic upgrading projects in our city, in addition to the William Cook and Hugh Boyd funding announcement set to be made this month.

We ask the government to do more than simply recognize the unique state that Richmond schools and families are in. Richmond children deserve to learn in safe modernized facilities as granted to other districts in the province. Richmond children deserve a fighting chance.

Time to rein in dog owners Dear Editor, Re: “Watch your step in Steveston,” Letters, Feb. 17.

Is your dog on or off?

Steveston may have a dog poop problem, but it really goes back to irresponsible dog owners who let their pet run loose.

I like to walk my leashed dog around Garry Point Park and recently, more and more dog owners are unleashing their pets to allow them to run loose around the park.

When these owners are told that this is not an off-leash park, they either shrug their shoulders, feign ignorance or say they don’t

understand English.

There are 10, off-leash parks in the City of Richmond, all of which are well used by responsible dog owners and their dogs. There is a fine for not having your dog leashed and under control at all times in public places.

Garry Point Park is not an off-leash park for dogs and neither are school grounds.

Dog owners should be respectful of others, control their pets when in public, or be prepared to pay the fine and the admonishment from others.

Trustees were tabled with a petition of 6,000 signatures last November by a group called Parents Care Group.

Board chair Debbie Tablotney said the petition “wasn’t totally representative” of Richmond, as it had signatures from the United States and Hong Kong.

“A lot of it was collected on WeChat,” a Chinese social media forum, said Tablotney.

The petition stated that an all-inclusive code of conduct was sufficient and that extra attention to SOGI minority students was discriminatory against other minorities, or targets of bullying.

“I have to respectfully say that history shows when a group is faced with systemic marginalization and have not had a level playing field, sometimes special policies are

needed to shift awareness,” said Nixon.

Both Ho and Wong told the News that they wanted more parent feedback, considering the amount of opposition they heard in the days leading up to Monday’s meeting, which saw some opposing parents speak against the policy, including one animated parent who heckled the board, according to teacher Lisa Descary.

Wong said she thought parents were not consulted since the board unanimously directed staff to investigate the development of a separate SOGI policy on Nov. 7.

Ho said some parents oppose the policy outright. He said he wanted to postpone a vote on creating the policy until more feedback was received.

Tablotney, speaking on her behalf, said the policy was long overdue.

“My hope is that this will move us from tolerance and acceptance to understanding and embracing,” she said.

“Tolerating is not understanding.”

ity planners will be fielding your questions and taking your thoughts regarding the size of homes on farmland, at an open house Thursday, March 2 at Richmond City Hall.

City council is considering amending its bylaws to limit the maximum size of a house on protected agricultural land, as well as other measures to limit the footprint of new developments on arable soil.

The issue has garnered significant publicity in recent months, after planners told city council that new homes are averaging over 12,000-square-feet with many reaching close to 20,000-square-feet.

Last year, city staff denied a building permit for a 41,000-square-foot home.

The city doesn’t restrict size, as many Metro Vancouver municipalities that border farmland do.

The issue is contentious among the Southeast Asian community, as large homes are seen as necessary for

multi-generational farming families.

But how big is too big?

The open house will offer two summary presentations in the council chambers starting at approximately 5:30 and 7:00 p.m.

The City of Richmond notes the public can go online to LetsTalkRichmond. ca, its public engagement site, where display boards and a survey will be available from Feb. 27-March 12 (midnight).

Information gathered will be presented to city council for its consideration.

anadian National (CN) Railway company has not responded to repeated inquires by the Richmond News over numerous failures this month and last at its rail crossings along the Shell Road corridor.

Communications between CN and the City of Richmond also appear to be scant.

“We’ve repeatedly phoned CN Rail to express our concerns and ask them to remedy the situation,” said city spokesperson Ted Townsend.

On Wednesday, the crossing bars at Alderbridge Way and Shell Road were malfunctioning, as they had been earlier this month, several times, and at different loca-

tions along Shell.

News1130 reported long delays on Highway 91 as a result of the failure, at 4 p.m.

The City of Richmond tweeted that it was “extremely concerned about the rail arm issues and have diligently contacted [CN communications] several times.”

CN did not respond to the News’ latest request by press time.

Earlier in the month, the News was aware of at least two incidences in which the crossing bars had malfunctioned, causing serious traffic delays.

hey don’t give up and they keep believing.

Clearly, Gebbie Huo’s courage and determination continues to be a source of inspiration for her friends and colleagues.

Huo, 46, is battling cancer for the second time in four years, having previously fought and beat the killer disease in the shape of stage 4 lymphoma in 2013.

The Hong Kong-born flight attendant — who moved to Canada when she was 12 and has called Richmond home for more than 20 years — is now three months into another fight for her life, this time taking chronic lymphocytic leukemia head on, via chemotherapy.

Four swabbing drives later, a potentially lifesaving stem cell match has yet to be found for Huo, who lives on Granville Avenue.

The clock is ticking on Huo’s chances of survival, but that’s not deterring the circle of love that envelopes her, including her close friend and colleague, Rupert Ngan, who is busy promoting more stem cell drives.

“Donators don’t have to be Asian, but it does increase the chances of a match,” said Ngan, adding that the drives are not just in aid of Huo, but could potentially save someone else’s life.

“The chances of getting a match increase with people from an Asian ethnicity; but not a lot of Asians are willing to donate; they’re not usually open to donations, especially when it comes to things such as this.

“We really want to get as many registrants as we can, because the odds for finding

a match that is not a family member are 1:750,000.” The first drive was in January and then there were two in Richmond, which were very well attended, despite the snowfall.

Ngan said Huo is “doing well, considering it’s the second time around for her.”

“She’s a bit weak because of all the drugs, but she’s keeping her spirits up.”

I

t started as a school project and now it’s morphed into a full-blown contest on Facebook.

As part of their Grade 9 social studies class, StevestonLondon secondary students Veronica Xia, Jessie Hall and Janice Chan were tasked with a project themed “meaningful change.”

And, after the group came to realize how First Nations people were a “large part” of Canada’s identity, the poetryloving trio wanted to bring some attention and awareness to what they call the “unjust treatment” of the aforementioned culture.

That’s when they thought of organizing a poetry contest as part of their project and are now accepting entries from other Richmond students Grades 5 through to 9.

“We had to think of a current issue that dates back to the industrial revolution,” said Janice.

“So, we started a Facebook page for Richmond students to submit their poems and donate at least a dollar.

“And we’re contacting elementary teachers to spread the word also.”

All proceeds from the contest, said Janice, will be donated to a local Aboriginal organization, in order to “create meaningful change and help First Nations of Canada.”

Popsicle contest isn't a bridge too far

ore than 40 Cambie secondary students are set to deliver a gut-buster when they open the theatre doors to the public for Check Please, a comedy that takes the audience on a journey of atrocious dates that finally lead to true love.

Drama remains a popular class at Cambie, and teacher Megan Preston hopes to continue the school’s strong tradition in the arts by publicizing the students’ work during Education Week.

“They’re working hard on this, it’s coming together really well,” said Preston during a rehearsal in their cozy theatre, in early February.

Check Please chronicles a regular guy and girl (referred to in the play as Guy and Girl) who go on one bad date after another. Finally, they meet one another near the end of the play and appear to hit it off.

“People can expect to laugh,” said Preston.

Grade 12 student Kyle Sangha takes the co-leading role as the guy.

Last year, Sangha played Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, so he says he’s comfortable in the spotlight — although that’s not always the case in the classroom.

“I’m usually a pretty quiet guy and get my work done,” said Sangha.

Sangha’s down-to-Earth attitude plays well in his role as the guy, as he is constantly faced with over-the-top dates who test his

patience and will to find love.

While he aced the role of Lysander last year, he said he prefers comedies.

“I like to let loose in the theatre,” said Sangha.

His theatre partner is Grade 12 student Susan Luong, who also acts out a series of bad dates where she’s left to wallow and cry on the shoulder of a friend.

“I was surprised to get the role,” said Luong, who perfectly executes the hopeless lovebird.

The play is easily adaptable for present day situations, despite being written in 2003; Preston’s crew has created some hilarious bad dates.

For instance, the guy has to endure a date from hell when his dinner partner, played by Jersey Flores, is constantly on her smartphone.

Of course, some dating situations never change, such as when the girl meets an overly-eccentric date, played by Kayson Lam, who can’t sit still and digs himself into a hole with a litany of bad jokes.

Some of it may seem over the top, but that’s exactly how writer Jonathan Rand devised Check Please; throughout the play the audience can sense the frustration and discomfort of the daters, all the while laughing.

In all, there are 18 actors in the Cambie play with 25 other students helping stage it.

Check Please at Cambie Theatre runs March 1-4 at 7 p.m. Tickets at the door cost $7/10 for students/adults. Proceeds go back to the theatre department.

So says biology expert and Grade 10 student, Carol Shen: “So far, all of my competitions have been physics-related, but it’s still fun. Because of the club, I’ve got to meet a few more people, and they’ve become really close friends.”

Chow said the social aspect of the club is important.

“Our team, in general, caters to a lot of different students. Some want to be involved, and their strength is in science. . . So they still want to be part of a team

Hip-hop ‘mega crew’ ready to get fresh Graeme Wood

I

t’s being dubbed a “mega crew” and they’ll be breaking it down fresh with some mega moves at the Notorious Dance Competiton March 3 at McRoberts secondary.

This urban hip-hop dance competition features more than 25 student teams from across the Lower Mainland, including the McRoberts crew, made up of 20, Grade 8-12 students, many of whom are straight out of Moncton.

Now in its fifth year, organizers expect next Friday’s event to be the biggest and tickets are nearly sold-out.

Notorious is an example of how students, teachers and community members at large have fostered one element of the arts, and as such is a key event for Education Week at the Richmond School District.

Choreographer Rhea Casido said the audience is in for a thrill as the McRoberts team includes dancers from all grades.

“Some are new to dance, but they want to dance so it’s not hard to get them moving,” said Casido.

They will be whacking, hustling, popping, breaking and more, as they perform to both new and classic hip-hop beats.

“The audience is going to expect to see a high-energy event where you’ll see teams that have worked so hard over the past year to create these amazing routines and showcase them in front of a huge crowd. They’ll see the passion,” said Casido, a 24-year-old aspiring actress, who partnered with co-choreographer Mica Cobarubia, 21, to stage the performance.

This will be Jane Vos’ first Notorious performance.

“I love dance and want to pursue it as a career. It’s the only school team I’ll join because I’m horrible at sports,” said Grade 8 student Vos. Horrible at sports?

Not so fast.

Hip-hop is much like a sport, if not a sport in its own right. It requires diligent practice, incredible physical talent, and, in the case of Notorious, lots of teamwork.

Casido is in the midst of introducing a new freestylefocused program.

and we’re hoping to keep training those new skills and facilitate freestyle skills, which I think is missing in Richmond’s dance community.”

In turn, keeping things fresh keeps the audience coming back for more.

“There’s always a different vibe. Last year, we had an amazing freestyle competition.”

Changing things up is also important to keeping up with how the music changes, as Notorious ebbs and flows with pop culture.

“People like to throw in a lot of pop culture references, throw in a few jokes, include different songs, including throwbacks,” said Casido.

Popular amongst the kids is pop singer Ariana Grande, one of Christa Chiu’s favourites.

Grade 9 Chiu said Notorious gives her an opportunity she can’t find anywhere else in the school district.

“I was interested in dance and it was, like, something new that I could try. In elementary school, there wasn’t a dance opportunity,” said Chiu, who performed ballet in early childhood.

On March 2, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Richmond, students will test their scientific, artistic and technical skills.

This has become a large issue across the country, as more and more of us are reaching the age. Here are some issues you should consider if you are approaching the critical age, and how I would recommend you decide which way to go.

ore than 1,000 soccer jerseys, shorts and socks will soon be winging their way to soccer-loving, but impoverished, nations, courtesy of the Richmond Girls Soccer Association (RGSA).

Former RGSA player-turned referee Mackenzie Seaborn, her mom and RGSA administrator, Kim, and local soccer dad and coach Wayne Masing all played their respective parts in soliciting, sorting and gathering the veritable mountain of equipment.

As well as the soccer apparel – most of which is brand new or barely used – more than 100 soccer balls and some refereeing equipment is also being donated.

Through Canadian-based charity Sportaid International, a portion of the clothing and equipment will be heading to Paraguay this week, with the remainder going to other Central America countries later this year, thanks to an assist from Richmond-based non-profit Fundamentals for Change (FFC).

“My mom, who’s the administrator at

RGS, was getting ready for the spring season and noticed there was a lot of outdated, but unworn, jerseys and she didn’t really want to throw them out,” said Mackenzie, 17, a Grade 12 student at Hugh Boyd secondary.

“We both thought that people in less fortunate circumstances might be able to use them. So, we sorted out all these jerseys, shorts, socks, refereeing equipment and soccer balls.

“And we advertised for a clothing drive to see if anyone else was out there that wanted to donate similar items.”

After taking over the clothing and equipment drive, Mackenzie — who doesn’t play soccer any more due to her dancing commitments — was approached by Sportaid and then Jeff Kuzik at FFC. “We wanted to really support the love of soccer in places around the world that maybe don’t have the same resources as we do or the access to all the equipment,” added Mackenzie.

FFC was collecting some of the equipment from Mackenzie to donate to Grade 9 Magee secondary student Sam Guo, 14, who, along with his family, is taking the gear to Central America later this year.

fter the briefest of honeymoons, I was ready to fight for divorce. The case: Snow vs Eiche.

While I was fuming and fretting about the effects that this mésalliance was having on me, a vocabulary of pertinent words drifted through my mind.

First of all, the guilty party — snow.

Although the ancient Romans had a word for snow in Latin — “nix, nivis” — the only trace it left in English is the adjective niveous, snowy, recorded in 1623.

Instead, snow, like so many one-syllable English words, comes from a dialect originally spoken by one of the Germanic tribes.

It’s based on the Old English “snaw,” which, like the modern German “Schnee,” can be traced to the Proto-Germanic “snaiwaz.”

The first twenty-four-hours of the honeymoon were enchanting, with snow a pristine and candid blanket over everything.

Pristine is one of those words that took a little fork in the road. Its source is the Latin “pristinus,” the adjective for early, original, former.

When it was introduced into English, in the 1530s, pristine signified primitive or ancient, but by the early 20th century it meant unspoiled, untouched, pure.

In describing snow as candid, I’m not saying that it was frank or informal, which are the main senses of the word now, but rather that it was white.

Candid comes from the Latin “candidus,” white. The modern Italian word “candido” adheres to the Latin meaning, but is also used figuratively to mean innocent or pure.

Every now and then during the past white weeks we saw the daytime temperature rise

a little, only to plummet again overnight.

This left the snow sheathed with frost that crackled and crunched when we walked on it.

Frost, from the Proto-Germanic “frustaz,” is sometimes further described as hoar or rime.

The Old English “hrim” is the source of rime and refers to a frozen mist or fog. Rime can also be a synonym for hoarfrost, which more specifically is frozen dew.

Hoar, deriving from the Old English “har,” means grey-haired with age, venerable (it comes from the same Proto-Germanic source, “haira,” as the modern German “Herr,” a title of respect).

A resemblance of the ice crystals of frost to an old man’s white beard led to the coining of the term hoarfrost.

My infatuation with snow petered out completely when its ugly side began to dominate the scene.

Vehicles plowed through the snow and left it a sullied mess, a flood of slush on the roads, freezing overnight to become thick ice. Driving, even walking, was an act of daring.

Slush, a word first documented in the 17th century, is thought to be imitative of sloshing, the sound of splashing.

The verb sully, in use since the late 16th century, derives from the Middle French “souiller,” to soil. Used figuratively, it’s linked to the Old French “soillier,” to make dirty.

The Old French, in turn, has been related to “souil” (wild boar’s wallow or pigsty), which can be traced to the Latin word for little pig, “suculus.”

Happily divorced from snow, my garden and I are looking forward to the courtship of spring, a gentler partner.

A

t what point does a business operation become a labour of love?

Steveston’s Colin Elmes is pretty much living that moment right now, even after running TSS Academy, a local soccer training school for up-and-coming young players, over the better part of two decades.

That’s because he acquired a soccer team franchise that will play in the PDL (Premier Development League), what Elmes considers to be the third tier in the professional game on this continent, kicking off play in May. “Most people in the soccer community looked at us as if we had three eyes,” Elmes quipped. “But we have, over the past 20 years, carved out a living and made some money with TSS. So, with what we’ve had to go through to maintain our business in the soccer world locally, I think we’re the guys who can make this work.

“We’re going to give it our best shot.”

Elmes said he is bankrolling the endeavour with the TSS Rovers, which is designed to attract mostly college and university aged players, all of whom are expected to be Canadian, many of them repatriated from NCAA teams in the U.S. But does operating a team make good business sense?

“The business side of it for us is really about creating a pathway where there is a top, something for the players, on the male side of things, to aspire to,” he said, adding that TSS has a record of placing the majority of their high school age players with colleges and universities.

But when it comes to soccer in North America, the sports ownership landscape has been littered with plenty of examples where ventures collapsed in spectacular fashion. Well-financed clubs in the old NASL such as the New York Cosmos — which was backed by Warner Communications — didn’t survive. And even the Vancouver Whitecaps, playing in arguably the Canadian hotbed

of the sport in the late 70s and early 80s, disappeared as attendance here, and around the rest of the league, waned and the bills mounted.

Elmes knows this all too well as a young fan of the NASL era Whitecaps. But he is optimistic the roots created by his soccer academy a generation later, the rise in exposure to the sport through the MLS Whitecaps and wall-to-wall TV coverage of the game from around the globe will encourage fans to give his new team a look.

“Our goal is to have 10,000 people come through in our eight games. And if we reach that I’d be absolutely over the moon,” said Elmes, who will also serve as the Rovers’ head coach.

That would go a long way in repaying the cost of purchasing the PDL franchise (new ones cost $50,000 in U.S. dollars) and the first year of operating the Rovers is expected to be somewhere in the $120,000 to $150,000 mark.

Elmes managed to secure an existing PDL team — the Crossfire Premier side from Redmond, Washington — for less and moved it north of the border. He declined to divulge just how much of a discount he managed to get.

“Swangard was a huge component of this,” he said. “If we had tried to go to a local park and put fencing around it to create a stadium atmosphere, which the league demands, it wouldn’t have provided us with the cachet Swangard has.

“Any soccer fan who has grown up around here knows what that place means. It’s an iconic place,” he added.

When it comes to the players turning out in the Rovers’ red and black strip, they will not be paid, although the club will help with some expenses.

On the other side of the business ledger, to create a revenue stream, the Rovers will charge $70 for seven home PDL matches, plus a special eighth exhibition match against a team with a higher profile.

Individual game tickets will cost $10 for adults and $7 for those under 12.

Sponsorship is a large part of many sports team’s viability and the Rovers operation is making efforts to firm up support through the many connections TSS has established over the years.

Once Elmes was sure the deal to acquire the PDL franchise was going to be accepted by the league, he brought together a group of “soccer crazy” individuals who also possessed some business clout to form a board of advisors.

“They are people who are connected to our (soccer) world from the past,” Elmes said, “parents who have had kids in our programs and who are keenly motivated to support local soccer. And they are pretty strong-willed and financially capable people, who if they are not willing to contribute some kind of sponsorship themselves, they know people who would.”

Passengers passing through Vancouver International Airport (YVR) will now be able to do a bit more shopping inside the terminal buildings. Richmond-headquartered Sage, a cloud accounting software producer, announced Thursday the launch of its Sage Foundation’s Enterprise Fund — a U.S.$1 million fund open to non-profits with enterprising ideas to help improve the lives of military veterans, young people or women and girls in local communities. nother big week is unfolding for Richmond Senior Boys Basketball at the Olympic Oval.

A pair of teams have already nailed down provincial berths by advancing to the final of their respective tiers at the Lower Mainland Championships, while three other schools were also contending for provincial berths.

The Steveston-London Sharks continued their late season surge with an 80-76 semifinal win over St. Thomas More on Wednesday afternoon.

The Sharks will defend their Lower Mainland title tonight (6:15 p.m.) against Burnaby’s Byrne Creek Bulldogs in the “AAA” title game. They are also headed back to the Langley Events Centre in two weeks for provincials.

The Richmond champions were again led by the brilliance of 6-foot-10 standout Fardaws Aimaq who poured in 43 points despite getting double-teamed throughout.

“It hasn’t been a picture perfect season the way we thought it was going to be but I am so proud of these guys,” said Aimaq. “The way we have stepped up these last three weeks, playing some real good basketball.

I’m really excited for Friday and trying to win another banner and moving forward too.”

The Sharks entered the semi-final 0-2 against the Knights this season but showed their big game experience by staying stepfor-step with the highly-regarded Burnaby

Catholic school. They clutched up in crunch time to score the final seven points of the game to erase a 76-73 deficit.

Isaiah Hunter added 17 for the winners.

“I’m a little choked up right now,” said Sharks head coach Mike Stoneburgh. “It’s been an up and down season, just trying to get the kids mentally focused. Now we are seeing the results.

“I wanted to get (back to provincials). It was tough seeing the kids lose the final last year and having to deal with that. Now we get a chance to get back to (that game).”

Two other teams are hoping to be headed to the B.C. “AAA” tourney too.

The McMath Wildcats and McNair Marlins both won elimination games Wednesday to set up their biggest games of the season for provincial berths on Thursday against Lord Byng and St. Thomas More respectively.

The Wildcats outlasted the Richmond Colts 87-83, while the Marlins made short work of Windermere in a 105-69 win.

Meanwhile, the Cambie Crusaders secured their third consecutive trip to the B.C. “AA” Championships.

The No. 8 Crusaders were slated to play No. 2 King George in Thursday’s Lower Mainland “AA” title game after their big 84-75 victory over St. Pat’s on Tuesday.

The RC Palmer Griffins were looking to join them when the took on St. Pat’s yesterday for the final B.C. berth.

f the Richmond Adult Soccer Association was handing out an overall MVP award this season it would appropriately go to the league scheduler.

A harsh winter has wreaked havoc with the allcity soccer circuit — forcing the postponement of a whopping 107 matches, including an eight-week stretch when the league stood idle.

“It has been ridiculous,” said RASA president Steve Valenzuela. “Some games had to be rescheduled several times. Just complete silliness.

Fortunately, the city has been great in accommodating us, moving many things around to make it all work. As long as we don’t get any more snow!”

The 2016-17 campaign is back on course

It starts tonight (Friday) with the first-ever all-star game between RASA and the Burnaby Men’s Soccer League. The match will be played at 8 p.m. at the Minor Oval, followed by a social at Legend’s Pub. The idea of bringing the top talent from the two leagues together for a friendly, originated a couple of years ago, according to Valenzuela. The league typically would only face each other in Provincial Cup play otherwise. Every team from the first division of each league must have at least one representative.

RASA will also hold its Soccer Sunday on March 5 at Minoru. The day-long event features three high-profile matches — the RASA All-Star Game (top talent from all divisions), the League Cup final

(a Provincial Cup berth going to the winner), and the Masters Cup final. The games will take place at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.

Meanwhile, two of three regular season titles have been decided. The Richmond Old Blacks completed an unbeaten campaign (13-0-1) to capture the Masters Division, while Club Ireland Celtic clinched the Second Division title with a 112-1 record.

First Division honours are still up for grabs with the All Blacks currently holding down first place with an 8-3-2 record thanks to a four-game win streak.

Defending champion AC Richmond is right behind them (8-3-3) while newcomer West Coast is enjoying an outstanding season after earning promotion and sit third at 7-2-4. AC Richmond and West Coast play a key game on Sunday afternoon.

Tyler Sandhu is certainly making the most of his final season in the Western Hockey League. The former Seafair Minor Hockey standout is enjoying a career year with the Tri-City Americans. He enters this weekend 25th in league scoring with 67 points in 61 games, including 17 goals.

That’s already 19 points better than his previous best campaign with still 11 games to go. Tyler is also providing tremendous leadership as the Americans captain. The team is enjoying competitive season with a 35-23-3 record as the playoffs near. The Richmond News is product to recognize Tyler as the Athlete of the Month for February.

Speed skating Richmond teams dominate Bantam V&Ds returns to Oval R

even years after Canada won five long track speed skating medals at the Richmond Olympic Oval during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, speed skating of the short track variety makes its return with the V-Rrooom Challenge III on Saturday.

The event is hosted by the Richmond Rockets and Vancouver Velocity short track speed skating clubs and is the largest interclub competition in the province.

Approximately 160 skaters from Canada and the United States will compete in what is known as ‘The Fastest Sport on Ice’.

“The V-Rrooom Challenge is an excellent opportunity for our skaters to perform in their last competition prior to provincials,” explained Don Mah, president of the Rockets.

“It is also an excellent opportunity for local youth to witness the excitement and speed of this sport up close and obtain information about joining our club.”

Speed Skating is a family friendly, volunteer-driven sport, with 24 clubs in B.C. Skaters in competition regularly achieve speeds in excess of 50-kilometers an hour, quite the thrill for the majority in the sport that have not earned their driver’s licenses yet.

For those that witness the V-Rrooom Challenge and want to try speed skating for themselves, the Richmond Rockets offer free “Try Speed Skating” sessions on Thursdays at 6:15 p.m. at the Richmond Olympic Oval, including skate rentals and basic equipment

The Steveston-London Sharks and McMath Wildcats picked up right where they off two weeks earlier in the girls city playoffs — squaring off in the V&D title game.

The Sharks continued their outstanding season with a 49-25 victory and solidified themselves as one of the favourites at the upcoming Grade 8 Invitational Provincial Championships in Pitt Meadows.

The Wildcats will be joining them thanks to their big 35-34 overtime win over North Shore champion Argyle in the semi-finals.

Steveston-London dominated its opponents en route to the final, rolling past Burnaby South 55-25, after opening with a 62-15 triumph over Collingwood. The Wildcats defeated Burnaby Central 38-31 in their opener.

The teams’ success reflects the work being done by the Richmond Youth Basketball League (RYBL) with 18 of the 28 combined players having come through the program.

The vast majority played at the rep level the past two seasons.

The Sharks’ biggest competition at the B.C. tourney is expected to come from the Semiahmoo Totems. The Fraser Valley champions aged up to finish second at junior girls tournament in Penticton that featured a number of ranked teams.

The McRoberts Strikers also advanced to the V&D main draw after a 28-21 wild card win over Burnaby Mountain. The Richmond League third place finisher then dropped a

It was a historic week for the MacNeill Ravens at the V&D Bantam Boys Championships. They secured their first-ever provincial tourney berth by reaching the title game before falling to Burnaby South.

The Ravens advanced to the final with a big 61-50 victory over North Shore champion St. Thomas Aquanis. They also cruised to a 68-28 win against Alpha in their opener.

The McMath Wildcats also locked up a spot at the provincials thanks to their 55-41 win over STA in the third place game. The Richmond champs began play with a 62-41 win against West Vancouver, before dropping a 60-47 decision to Burnaby South.

The Steveston-London Sharks narrowly missed out on a semi-final berth, falling 52-49 to STA. The Sharks advanced to the main draw with a 51-45 wild card win against Burnaby Mountain.

The boys and girls Grade 8 Provincials take place in Pitt Meadows, March 2-4.

Meanwhile, the McMath Wildcats will be headed to GP Vanier Secondary in Comox for the Grade 9 Boys Invitational Provincials after finishing second at the V&D Championships.

The Wildcats were edged 39-35 by Burnaby South in Friday’s title game. They had earlier defeated North Shore champion Carson Graham (57-48) and New West (6858) to reach the final.

A terrific season continued for the RC Palmer Griffins as they reached the third place game at the Juvenile Girls V&D Championships before dropping a 42-24 loss to Argyle. The Richmond champs had advanced to the semis after edging New West 31-28, then lost to STA. They are joined by McMath at this week’s Grade 9 Provincial Invitational Championships at Britannia.
