don’t doubt politics requires a limber back, with all that twisting and bending. It’s called compromise and, for the most part, that’s a good thing. Deals have to be made and not all promises can be fulfilled.

Even so, I’m feeling somewhat “dismayed” to use the City of Richmond’s term, with the federal Liberals of late. Call me naïve, but there were three critical campaign promises I actually thought would materialize.

The first was redressing the federal government’s relationship with First Nation’s people.

Justin Trudeau bent over backwards, (there’s that limber back) even throwing his own father under the bus, some may say, to apologize for past policies in regards to First Nations. He vowed to bring indigenous people to the table and give them a strong voice in projects that impact their communities.

Ya, never mind. Site-C damn is going ahead, as are those pipelines you’ve been opposing for years.

Second, electoral reform. During the campaign, the PM declared the 2016 federal election would be the last of its kind. The “first past the post” system doesn’t adequately represent the electorate, and reform is on the way, was the unwavering message.

Nope, changed our mind. Thirty nine per cent of the popular vote is just fine; at least, we’re doing well by it.

Third, the federal Liberals claimed they would strengthen the environmental review process (that very process they accused the “anti-science Tories” of gutting.)

Forget that as well. Building the biggest bridge in B.C. over the ecologically sensitive and vital Fraser River doesn’t require an environmental review.

Remember, this isn’t about nixing the bridge, it’s just about assessing it’s environmental impact. Even those who support the project, I hope, would also support third-party science contributing to the decision. (The provincial review was done by the very entity that stands to gain most from a super bridge — Port Metro Vancouver.)

I get there is a certain amount of horse trading going on. Trudeau gives Premier Clark the bridge, she gives him support for a carbon tax. But this is a dangerous game.

My son is home from university for reading week. He’s been talking about his environmental science course and the “runaway greenhouse effect” that could result in the extinction of 80 per cent of all life on Earth by 2030. My kids will be in their early 30s then, launching careers, having kids — maybe, or maybe just gasping for air in an overheated, toxic environment.

We can quibble the numbers, but clearly the stakes are high.

Dismissing environmental scientists from a massive project such as this bridge shows, not just a flexible back, but a lack of spine.

Tree Protection Bylaw Information Sessions

The City of Richmond is hosting information sessions to give the community a brief overview of the City’s Tree Protection Bylaw and the criteria used by staff to assess trees.

Information sessions will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the following locations: Thursday, February 23: Cambie Community Centre, 12800 Cambie Road

Thursday, March 23: Hamilton Community Centre, 5140 Smith Drive

Presentations will be from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Dear Editor, There’s dog poop all over Steveston!

We went for a walk on Friday and there was poop all over the sidewalks and on top of snow banks.

What has happened to Steveston?

We had to be very careful and watch where we were walking so as not to step in it.

It was obvious that some other people had not been as fortunate.

Dear Editor, Richmond needs a traffic management system. Our current system of pavement sensors seems to let through cars that are stopped one way and then changes to let stopped cars through in the other direction. This means you can literally stop at eight lights in a row. What a horrific waste of gas and time.

Once you cross the Arthur Laing Bridge and hit Granville Street and 70th Avenue you can usually go all the way to downtown Vancouver without stopping at a light.

No. 2 Road used to be reasonable, but they’ve inserted three new lights along that stretch and it is now as slow as all other Richmond arterials.

Let’s get this fixed and stop wasting gas and harming the environment.

In this RRSP/RRIF season, there are some key options to be familiar with.

Chief among them is how to properly designate your beneficiary so that, after you pass, either the designated beneficiary will not be taxed or your Estate will not be too heavily taxed.

With an RRIF specifically, there is a little-known option with respect to designation, known as the “Successor Annuitant.” With this option, the holder designates his or her spouse.

Assuming that spouse is the surviving spouse, she or he takes over the RRIF. The surviving spouse, if older than the deceased spouse, then steps into the shoes of the deceased, younger spouse, thereby reducing the minimum annual RRIF withdrawal (remember that, as you age, the minimum annual RRIF withdrawal rises) and slowing the depletion of the RRIF. It may be worth speaking with your accountant about this option!

Dear Editor, Re: “Is this really art?” Letters, Feb. 15.

Thank you for the photo of the sculpture at No. 2 and Dyke roads.

I’m wondering who the artist is and if it’s possible to publish the artist’s name.

There is little information about the artwork and, as far as I know, there is not a plaque installed on site naming the artwork, the artist, the concept and materials used for the artwork.

I enjoy the piece and believe it is art, unlike Carlie Holland, who has insulted the artwork publicly.

As you published Carlie Holland’s quite strident critique of the public art at the south end of No. 2 Road, you may as well publish my thoughts on it, as well.

Living not far away, I see the work quite often, and I think it is quite beautiful — one of the more successful pieces of public art around Richmond.

I guess if you consider art to be entirely a matter of taste, my opinion brings the score to 1-1. I don’t feel like writing endless words about it, but I find it enhances the site very well.

Much art and history about Steveston valourizes human activities, while the ancient mystery of the salmon themselves is underrepresented. Thus salmon vertebrae form the keel.

The general site was occupied by boat-builders (Japanese-owned, 1950-1976), fish-packers, and fishermen, whose activities were essentially built on the backs of the salmon migrating upriver.

Boat scale and profile are modeled after a 1951 West Coast trawler of the type built nearby.

The half-built vessel also references

the fact that many Japanese boat builders had to abandon their projects in 1942 prior to their expulsion/internment.

It is meant to be an interactive work, and viewers of all ages are encouraged to climb it, much as one might do upon discovering a gigantic whale skeleton, or an old boat.

Glen Andersen has been project coordinator, designer, sculptor and maker of mosaics for public spaces since 1995. The Richmond resident works with other designers, community groups, schools, private clients, youth, contractors and civic officials to create public and community art projects.

Who are we building all these condos for anyway?

Dear Editor, Re: Ghost City, News, Dec. 2 I have watched with dismay the headspinning pace of condo development in Richmond’s City Centre — wondering about the need for a building on every corner and for so many units to be built so quickly.

Now we have reports, supported by real estate data, that indicate half of these new units are sold but uninhabited and that the area is in danger of becoming a ghost town.

It begs the question — who exactly are these units built for? Is it to benefit absentee investors and real estate developers?

We keep hearing that the housing crisis is partly an issue of supply. If so many of the units built are marketed and sold overseas and not even made available to Canadians, it’s no wonder there is a problem with supply. Why is this allowed? There should be some restriction or limit on the percentage of units sold to speculators. Developers should not have free reign to market and sell units overseas.

It seems we are selling out the future of our cities in the Lower Mainland to the highest bidder. Neighbourhoods are being hollowed out with homes and condos sitting empty serving not as dwelling places but as empty shells for storing capital. Modest bungalows are torn down and replaced with monolithic mega homes that can be sold at a premium. I wonder how many of these mega homes in Richmond are also

uninhabited? It may explain the growing problem with illegal house/hotels. Many of these absentee investors will never come to live here. Has anyone on council considered the long-term implications of that?

A cap on foreign ownership and some kind of empty home tax might help to mitigate the growing problem of empty condo units and empty homes.

I would like to remind the Mayor and councillors of Richmond that they were elected and are in office to find solutions to problems not excuses. The problem doesn’t go away simply because it is ignored. Now that Carol Day’s proposal to study/implement an empty home tax in Richmond has been rejected, I would like to know what the City plans to do about the problem of empty homes and condo units. With so many more developments still in the works, we do not have the luxury of taking a wait and see approach.

We need our elected officials to act now to preserve community and quality of life in our city. Stopping any further condo development would be a good place to start.

A cap on foreign ownership and an empty home tax are also needed.

It is time the Mayor and councillors of Richmond worked to address the concerns of people who actually live here.

he last big piece of the B.C. election jigsaw in Richmond has fallen into place in the shape of the NDP’s final local candidate.

Current city councillor Chak Au will soon be installed by the BC NDP in the new Richmond South Centre riding and will be up against veteran BC Liberal Linda Reid.

Au was expected to officially seek the nomination today (Friday) but, as he’s the only nominee, will be acclaimed the candidate.

“Our current MLAs (in Richmond) have become detached from the people,” Au told the Richmond News.

“I want to offer people in Richmond a real choice. The NDP hasn’t had much success in Richmond in recent years and I feel that this Liberal government has neglected Richmond; just look at the hospital, social services and

Given the riding is new, ensconced in the heart of the Chinese-Canadian community and is also fresh ground for long-time MLA Reid — who made the former Richmond-East riding her own for more than 25 years — this race could be more competitive than before.

And being a Chinese immigrant, who has made it his mission to build bridges across cultures in Richmond during his time on city council, Au believes he has a good chance.

Stolen cars lead to burglary arrests Au: Could trigger city by-election blue Audi Q5 SUV — which was previously reported stolen from a house in January — parked in the 8000 block of No. 3 Road.

The Audi was tracked to the 7500 block of Abercrombie Road, where undercover officers discovered a second stolen vehicle nearby, a 2015 Lexus LX570 SUV, also stolen during a burglary in January.

At around 5 a.m. the same day, a 24-year old male was arrested when he exited the Lexus. Later, at around 2 p.m., the Audi was tracked to the 11300 block of Hammersmith Way, where officers arrested a 21-year old

wo suspected, prolific burglars have been arrested after a concerted effort by uniformed and undercover Richmond Mounties.

In a reaction to a recent spike in residential break-ins, Richmond RCMP has been deploying multiple undercover officers at various locations of the city, in addition to increasing patrol activity by uniformed Mounties.

On Feb. 1, officers from the RCMP’s property crime unit (PCU) recognized a

male and recovered several items of stolen property from the vehicle.

The suspects, a 21-year old male from Richmond, and a 24-year old male from Langley, are known to police and are alleged to be responsible for numerous burglaries. Charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing.

“We are seeing a trend where a residence has been burglarized and a vehicle stolen with the keys,” said Cpl. Simon Lee, of Richmond RCMP’s PCU. Richmond RCMP is reminding people to store vehicle keys where they will not be readily accessible.

Au added that it’s “hard to tell” if his background from China and being fluent in Chinese will give him any edge over the likes of Reid in the election.

“I haven’t really studied the demographics properly yet (for the riding),” he added.

“But I think it will help me bring the different voices of the community to the province.”

According to the City of Richmond, there are no restrictions on incumbent elected officials either running for MLA or, indeed, doing double-duty, should they win a seat in Victoria.

“I will have to talk to the mayor; I intend to continue with my councillor duties,” Au said, adding that he hadn’t yet thought far enough ahead what he might do if he were to win in May. “I would take advice from the mayor. No matter my decision, though, it will be made with the best interests of the people in Richmond in mind, it won’t be for my benefit.”

The new Richmond South Centre riding is the second smallest, geographically, in the province, second only to VancouverFalse Creek.

rade 12 McNair student and budding Aboriginal artist Atheana Picha is riding a growing wave of knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal history and culture within the Richmond School District.

A story such as hers would not likely have been possible 30, 20 or even, perhaps, 10 years ago. Spending much of her time in the school’s art department, the ambitious Picha has a fast-growing resume of achievements and has high hopes this spring to obtain a renowned scholarship supported by Aboriginal artist Godfrey Stephens, one of her role models.

Presently, Picha is working on a hallway mural and next week she’ll unveil Kingswood elementary school’s new logo — a Coast Salish design of an eagle. She’s also becoming increasingly active and well-known in Richmond’s arts community.

Her specialty is painting.

And while many brilliant, young artists have emerged out of Richmond schools over the years, it’s her focus on Aboriginal art that makes her journey unique.

The first agreement was signed in 2011, under a – Atheana Picha mandate by the Ministry of Education. The new agreement is the sole work of the district and Aboriginal community.

One main goal of the agreement — a blueprint for Aboriginal education — is to foster First Nations history into presentday curriculum. As well, the agreement should help improve the overall success of all Aboriginal students, who have lower graduation rates across the province — although such students in Richmond have historically done better, relative to provincial Aboriginal graduation rates.

“The Richmond School District recognizes the power of a shared responsibility for supporting Aboriginal learners, and endeavours to see all our Aboriginal learners graduate with dignity, purpose, and options. We believe that education that honours the histories, worldviews, and perspectives of First Peoples is good for all students in our district, and is key to a reconciled relationship with First Peoples in Canada,” explained the district’s communications manager, David Sadler.

Teacher consultant Leanne McColl worked hand-in-hand with Aboriginal elders to put the agreement together.

“Our hope is to make the agreement a bit more visible in schools and have teachers be more aware of it,” said McColl.

The agreement will strive to increase a positive identity and sense of belonging for Aboriginal students. This is important, said McColl, as the district counts about 300 self-identifying Aboriginal students, although the actual number may be several hundred more, according to Pathways Aboriginal Centre.

This is because, in the past, students have been pulled out of class to learn about their history and, thus, stigmatized.

“The movement has shifted. Rather than pulling out a student, now, a teacher will come to a class and work on a particular topic of importance. It becomes a class experience.

“There are still some people feeling a stigma in self-identification. It’s another indicator if we’re being successful — in terms of students self-reporting,” explained McColl.

Picha, who is part Coast Salish (Kwantlen First Nation), is well-aware of the genocidal history of Aboriginal people in North America and has a critical mind for art history. She notes that a lot of art from Canada in the 1800s showed land-

scapes without people, to lure Europeans to come to North America — as though to say, Aboriginal people don’t exist.

“So, even in art, Aboriginal culture has been washed away.

But bringing (Aboriginal history) back in the education system will slowly bring it back. A lot of elements still need to be recognized; it’s been washed away pretty badly and there’s a lot of hurt there. Some attempts of reconciliation have made it worse sometimes,” said Picha.

It is hoped that the agreement will trickle down into classrooms, so teachers better understand how to incorporate Aboriginal history and students, such as Picha, are better able to think critically.

“Aboriginal art needs to be taught from older generations,” said Picha, who visits with elders during her summer breaks.

“It’s been tough to learn a lot of the stories. They’re old and don’t want to leave their house. So, you have to go visit them and a lot of people are on (Vancouver Island). But because there are more courses becoming available to me now – I went to a conference on Aboriginal sovereignty — it’s getting better,” she said.

The critical component of the agreement, said McColl, is having elders on board to steer Aboriginal education in the appropriate direction.

One of the agreement’s committee members is Roberta Price, a Coast Salish (Snuneymuxw First Nation) Aboriginal elder, and longtime Richmondite of 37 years.

For about 30 years Price, 61, has spoken to classrooms across the district (and, now, four others in the region) and helps teachers incorporate local Aboriginal history.

She says she’s seen a marked improvement in local Aboriginal teaching within the district.

“There wasn’t an awareness of knowledge that First Nations were present in Richmond. There wasn’t a feeling of acceptance,” she said.

Of course, for millennia, the Musqueam First Nation has always made Richmond their home, although they never had a name for Richmond. Rather, they named spots along the shoreline. For instance, Terra Nova was Spul’u’kwuks (Anglicized), meaning “bubbling water,” for the gas deposits coming through the sloughs. It was a Musqeaum fishing village, but now it’s a subdivision with a namesake elementary school — one example of an attempt to reclaim Richmond’s Aboriginal history into modern life.

It’s this history that elders, such as Price, bring to classrooms, such as Penny Naka-

moto’s Grade 2 class at Kidd elementary.

“Part of what the Grade 2 students learn about in social studies is that Canada is made up of many diverse regions and communities. So, we began with what is familiar to them — their own community. In the fall we looked at features of rural, suburban and urban communities and how Richmond has changed. In January we began learning about the Coast Salish people and the relationship the Musqueam people had to the land here,” said Nakamoto.

The students built model villages as teaching points for past social, cultural and economic practices that occurred on the island.

“We have also talked about how the Musqueam people still live here today and that their culture and traditions continue to be passed on. After having shared some of their own traditions and celebrations, students learned about the music, art and stories that are part of the Musqueam culture,” she added.

Picha said she looks back at her elementary school years and isn’t convinced model villages or totem poles are the way to go, as she’s of the opinion it likens Aboriginal culture to those ones that are extinct.

“But this culture is still here,” said Picha.

And it’s modernizing, she said.

Like art, “you have to change after a while.

You can’t stay the same all the time,” she said.

It’s such an exchange of different ideas and perspectives that the agreement hopes to foster.

here’s not many places Joan Breen goes in Richmond that she doesn’t get recognized.

But that’s just what happens when you’ve spent 27 years as the manager of the Good Shepherd Drop-In Centre for preschoolers in Steveston — which celebrates three decades of operation in 2018 — and have touched the lives of seemingly countless families.

“I was at the grocery store and the young fella bagging the groceries said to me, ‘You’re Joan from Good Shepherd?’” Breen said. “He told me he went there as a youngster.”

Another time, when Breen was off on vacation and had just boarded her plane at YVR and felt she’d made it without running into anyone she knew, a voice called out, “Joan, is that you?”

“It was the flight attendant — a mom of one the kids who had been at the centre,” Breen said with a smile.

And now she is getting plenty of crossgenerational interaction these days as young parents who were some of the “little people” Breen and her staff looked after for a few hours each day are now bringing their own children back to her.

“I’ve also been to a couple of weddings.

Some of the kids I had have married young,” she said.

But don’t think Breen doesn’t like the contact or recognition. She said her time at the daycare has brought her immense pride

and happiness.

“I call it a community service, not a program because it’s open to everyone,” she said. “I don’t like to refer to it as a business.”

To help make things run, the Emmanuel Christian Community Church — where the daycare operates in an adjacent building — provides some funding.

The odd art camps and garage sales at the church also contribute to keeping the doors open.

“It clicks over,” Breen said.

When she started at the centre, after coming to Canada from Ireland in 1989 with her then husband who was studying at Regent College, a graduate school of theology in Vancouver, Breen thought it would be for a couple of years.

“A friend saw the ad for the position, so I went down and they chose me,” Breen said, adding that when her marriage ended not

long afterwards, she never thought about leaving.

“My husband went back to Ireland and I stayed here,” she said. “That was OK because we all have our calling in life. And mine is here. Plus, I never felt any pull to go back to Ireland and my three kids were happy here.”

So, too, were plenty of youngsters in her care.

“It’s been the perfect place. And I’ll keep on as long as I can,” said Breen, 63, adding she’s seen many changes in the community during her time as the flow of families using the centre’s “pay-as-you-go” structure has been steady.

“When I started we had moms who weren’t working and our service gave them a couple of hours for them to do things on their own, their errands or whatever they need to get done,” Breen said.

“We found that the parents really needed those hours. There are moms home on maternity leave and they also have a toddler.

Well, we can take the toddler and give the mom some time,” she said.

“It’s difficult for young families. If you can’t get all-day, daycare, or can’t afford it, we can help because it’s a drop-in centre where families pay for the time they place their children with us.”

One major difference today is a high number of grandparents who bring the youngsters to the centre.

“They get the couple of hours break,” Breen said.

Licensed to care for those from 18 months to five years old, the centre’s variety of ages makes for a rich environment, Breen said.

“Developmentally, it’s good for them to be with their peers, their own ‘little people.’”

And it’s also endearing to be part of their community, Breen added.

“It’s very fulfilling. I’ve met so many wonderful people over the years,” she said. “And the community here at the church has been a great support.”

That was evident when she came through cancer surgery in 2010 and was away from the centre for a while, but made a much anticipated return, according to one of the youngsters.

“One of the little guys asked me, ‘Why did you come back Joan?’ So, I asked him why he asked that, and he told me, ‘You came back because I wanted you to come back.’

“He was so happy for me to return and that shows you how their little minds develop and work,” Breen said.

Census numbers tell tales City growth, decline divided by Gilbert Rd. GRAEMEWOOD Staff Reporter

ichmond’s official population inched closer to 200,000 people, according to the 2016 Census, making it the 25th largest city in Canada. But, what piqued the curiosity of urban planner Andy Yan was in where the population increased, or, more precisely, where it declined.

“The story in Richmond is the exodus out of the west side,” said Yan, director of the City Program at Simon Fraser University.

“It’s a tale of two cities. There are areas of Richmond that have grown significantly. But at the same time we’re seeing many census tracts that have lost between two and five per cent of its population,” added Yan. Save for one neighbourhood — that of Dover Park, which saw a 0.6 per cent increase in residents — all of West Richmond, which is predominantly dominated by detached homes, saw a decline in population to varying degrees.

“The areas that lost the most people are the areas with expensive single-family homes,” explained Yan. “This aligns with areas of Vancouver, such as Kerrisdale and Shaughnessy, and parts of central Burnaby” said Yan. The Richmond neighbourhood, or census tract, with the sharpest decline was a portion of Terra Nova, east of No. 1 Road and north of Granville Avenue, which saw an 8.5 per cent drop, with 255 residents moving out between 2011 and 2016. Another area that saw a sharp population decline was the neighbourhoods south of the intersection of No. 2 Road and Williams roads.

Yan noted there are likely two main causes for these population drops in single-family neighbourhoods. One, older adults are becoming “empty-nester” seniors and aging in place as their young adult children move out. Two, the homes have become too unaffordable for new families to move in.

As such, they’re being purchased by foreigner investors or speculators.

“You can’t own these homes on local incomes . . . I think that’s just a reality of what’s happening in that area of Richmond,” said Yan. Areas that saw the most growth are City Centre (37 per cent) and West Cambie (33 per cent), popular places for new condos and townhouses, respectively. Another high growth area is the McLennan neighbourhood, south of Westminster Highway and east of Garden City Road, which saw a 13 per cent spike in people thanks to many new townhouses.“There

is a good story here,” said Yan. “We’re densifying in areas where we should be densifying. That comes into our discussion of meeting our goals of sustainability,” he added.

But as populations shift, city planners will need to adjust, said Yan. “The significance of this comes in with public amenities like schools; and issues of density and supporting local businesses. What happens when you have one area of Richmond lose six per cent of its population? That’s a profound challenge.”

These trends align with the present-day challenges of the Richmond School District.

School planners are seeking land for a new City Centre school and McLennan’s Anderson elementary is getting a new, eight-classroom expansion set for completion this September. Meanwhile, West Richmond schools were threatened with closures last year due to declining enrollment. For example, the Dixon elementary catchment has seen a 15 per cent decline in school-age children during the past 10 years, according to district data.

proved more multi-family unit zoning along arterial roads.

Long-term plans for neighbourhood shopping centres, such as Seafair and Blundell, call for condo development, as well.

The new census data was only for population and dwelling counts. Ethnicity and income, among other data, will be released later this year.

Over the past five years, Richmond increased its number of residential “dwellings” by 8.9 per cent, which is slightly higher than the Lower Mainland average of 8.2 per cent (Surrey and Langley account for the highest growth).

Yet, Richmond’s population grew by just 4.1 per cent — since the last census in 2011 — below the regional mark of 6.5 per cent.

an said he was surprised to see Richmond ranked fourth among Metro Vancouver municipalities for percentage of non-resident unoccupied homes (4,021 dwellings out of 77,478 total).

“Non-resident unoccupied dwellings,” as they are deemed in the census, are either homes that are outright empty or ones occupied by foreigner or temporary resident. Yan noted regional data show that the vast majority (85 per cent) of nonresident unoccupied dwellings are, in fact, empty.

“I had thought there would be a lot more in Richmond but apparently not,” said Yan. However, Yan said Richmond saw a significant spike in unoccupied homes since 2011, at 26 per cent (3,194 unoccupied in 2011). By contrast, Vancouver’s 25,502 unoccupied dwellings represented a 15 per cent spike since 2011.

“In the face of the significant housing challenges for those on local incomes in Vancouver, we still have a high rate of non-resident unoccupied houses,” said Yan. So, what does this mean? Yan was asked.

“Well, what is housing? Is it supposed to house people or is it supposed to house, well, not people?”

Yan said the empty homes spike corresponds to the increased popularity of short-term rentals during the past five years in Richmond.

“You reach the dilemma of when residential properties are used for business purposes,” said Yan, noting residential zones are taxed about 3.5 times less than commercial zones.

Looking deeper at census tracts, most unoccupied homes are in the City Centre area. For instance, the tract at the Richmond Olympic Oval, which only contains the River Green development, shows 21 per cent unoccupied dwellings.

“It could mean it’s a commercial success but not a community success,” said Yan.

hat’s the fastest growing stream of waste worldwide? You might be reading this article on it right now. Global electronic waste, like your old cell phone or PC, totals approximately 50 million tonnes a year, according to a 2013 study published in Science of the Total Environment. That’s 50 million tonnes that Richmond company Ronin8 Technologies plans to transmute into gold. But it’s not alchemy; it’s innovation at its gnest.

Three years ago, Ronin8 Founder and CEO Peter Holgate’s mother wrote him a letter. She just had lunch with Michael Musk, Elon Musk’s uncle, who reported that Elon’s company, Space X, had just launched a rocket and landed it back on a platform. Her question to Holgate was, “How’s your career going?”

Before he could respond, Holgate’s mother passed away.

“It was then that I recognized that in the second half of my career I had to do something more consequential,” explains Holgate, “something more meaningful. So, I started looking around for a major problem to solve. Electronic waste is the fasted growing stream of waste. It’s really a debt we’re leaving to the next generation.”

He and his team went quickly to work to solve that problem. A sonic generator, previously being used in mining was the answer.

hen Rosa Salcido, principal architect at Vivid Green Architecture Inc. decided to attend a “Business After 5” networking event at the Richmond Society for Community Living (RSCL) in February 2016, she wasn’t expecting to help them cross an item off their wish-list and create a big impact for Richmond.

“Business After 5” networking events are hosted by members of the Richmond Chamber, including small businesses and non-progt organizations. They’re designed to be fun and casual events, giving members a chance to show off their mission and location and attendees the chance to meet and greet other business owners and decision makers. An avid networker, and active chamber member, Salcido had attended many.

of fundraising and communications, led a tour through the RSCL Synergy Day Program on Westminster Hwy., the group arrived at a large storage room, which RSCL hoped to one day transform into a “Snoezelen” room.

designed and tested in the Netherlands, is a multisensory environment that can be supremely benegcial for those with various developmental disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder, as well as dementia and neurological conditions. At that point, it

was a distant possibility, an item on a long wish list to benegt their users.

“We didn’t really know how to start.

“Salcido realized she could be the key to move the project forward, having previously designed a Snoezelen room for the Fort St. John Hospital.

A Richmond resident and business owner,” she explains, “for a while, I’d been thinking about doing something signigcant within the community. This was something that could gnally become a reality.”

She offered to donate her services, a value of about $5,000.

After that, things moved quickly. RSCL had a small amount of grant money earmarked to the project and with two successful fundraisers, they were able to allocate the rest of the budget to the project.

from that trance when the credits rolled and you walked out of the theatre?

How often have you walked or driven home when your mind was elsewhere and you found yourself at home sooner than you expected without thinking about it?

You were in trance as an impressionable toddler and child, during emotionally charged experiences in the past, in a new place that engaged your senses, when you fell in love for the first time, and when you were lost in thought earlier today.

In these uncontrolled trance states, our unconscious is highly sensitive to suggestion.

We may have accepted incorrect beliefs about the world, other people and ourselves and these incorrect or maladaptive beliefs shape the stories we tell ourselves.

Having suffered from chronic pain in the past, I’ve recognized how easy it is to fall into negative thinking traps or cognitive distortions that actually increased my suffering.

Negative thoughts about our pain can include the following.

“The pain is just going to get worse.”

“I have to take something (drugs or alcohol) to manage the pain.”

“I have to find the right test or treatment to cure the pain.”

“Because the pain gets worse with activity, I must be causing harm and I have to lie down and rest.”

Our subconscious mind can accept these beliefs without question.

Similarly, negative beliefs and assumptions we accepted in the trances of early life, can contribute to anxiety, depression and unhappiness throughout our adult lives.

“I’m not good enough.”

“I have to be perfect.”

“The world is a dangerous place.”

“Something’s wrong with me.”

“People can’t be trusted.” “Life is unfair.”

With mindfulness and cognitive behavioural therapy, we can uncover maladaptive thoughts and beliefs, and step-by-step replace them with those that are more accurate, adaptive and empowering.

We can become conscious and aware co-authors of our own life stories and agents of positive change in our personal lives and in our world.

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. We allow the conscious mind to relax and engage the subconscious mind using imagery.

We often start with deliberate relaxed breathing. Unlike mindfulness meditation, we control rather than simply observe the breath.

In hypnotic inductions, we use the breath as a vehicle of progressive relaxation and imagine the whole body letting go with each successive breath.

When we reach a stage of deep relaxation, we offer positive suggestions to the subconscious.

These suggestions reinforce the new more adaptive neural pathways that will enhance our coping with life’s challenges and allow us to visualize ourselves mastering our lives and achieving our personal potentials.

This creates a positive blueprint for our minds.

Because clinical hypnosis is not appropriate for every person and every psychological or physical health condition, it should only be used by experienced and appropriately trained professionals.

A

t this stage of life, it seems that every year is the Year of Eating Dangerously.

Why? Because our metabolism becomes sluggish as we age.

Unless you work out two hours a day, seven days a week, and have a personal trainer on retainer…you’re bound to gain some poundage.

And by “some” I mean enough to make your clothes feel like they belong to a Barbie doll.

Who am I kidding by using the third person. I’m talking about me.

I look in the mirror and wonder where my waist went. I used to have this proportionately small waist, of which I was pretty darn proud. Until about age 57.

Then the excrement impacted the ventilation system.

Everything I eat now goes directly to my waist, which looks like a miniature spare tire. It’s not my best look.

A waist is a horrible thing to waste. Or lose. Of course, it might help if I cut out the potato chips, chocolate and cookies…the staff of life.

I’ve been trying, goodness knows I have.

But temptation is great. And my self-discipline is…well…not so great.

I’ve been trying to cook healthier — avocado, tomato and cilantro salads, lentil soup, braised kale with extra virgin olive oil.

Yet, I still gain weight. While we’re on the

subject, does anybody actually know an “extra virgin”?

An hour after I eat even a healthy meal, I’m hungry again. It’s a hunger that can only be satiated by crunchy and salty foods, such as chips or crackers.

So, now I have two problems — fatty foods that will potentially clog my arteries, and salty foods that could make my blood pressure skyrocket.

I think back and remember my father who had end-stage renal failure (kidney disease), which was caused by hypertension.

Even though he was a doctor and knew the risks of eating salty, at age 83, he decided that “We’re not here for a long time; we’re here for a good time.” Dialysis be damned!

Don’t get me wrong; he went to dialysis three times a week for nearly three years.

But before and after dialysis, all bets were off in terms of eating healthy meals. He wanted his last years to be free from constraints, so he ate whatever he wanted. Yet, the constraint of dialysis still existed….

I am a lot like my father, and a lot not.

I would like to be around for a long time, so I know that means moderating my diet.

And getting more regular exercise. I know, I know…that doesn’t mean walking to the store to buy potato chips.

I am publicly committing to eating healthier and exercising more.

Thriller sends Sharks to semis Mark Booth

I

t was another epic all-Richmond battle that has the Steveston-London Sharks off to the Lower Mainland “AAA” Championship semi-finals.

The Sharks pulled out an 81-80 thriller over the McMath Wildcats to earn a final four date next Wednesday (2:45 p.m.) with the St. Thomas More Knights at the Richmond Olympic Oval. The Wildcats are a solid bet to beat Point Grey tonight and also head to the Oval in search of one of the four provincial “AAA” berths that are up for grabs.

Wednesday night’s quarter-final match-up initially raised some eyebrows.

The Wildcats were seeded No. 4 in the 12-team tournament and the Sharks were put right behind them — rather than being on the other side of the draw. It meant two teams that squared off seven days earlier for the city title would meet again.

The two-time Richmond champion Sharks looked to be in trouble when McMath raced out to a 14-point first half lead while city MVP Fardaws Aimaq and Isaiah Hunter were parked on the bench with three fouls each. However, keyed by the 23-point performance of Zach Cantwell, they shaved the deficit to 50-41 at the half then took over in the third.

Steveston-London outscored the hosts 26-12 over the 10-minute stretch with Aimaq doing much of the damage from in the paint. The young Wildcats regrouped to erase a ninepoint Sharks’ lead and set the stage for a nail-biting finish.

Grade 11 standout Bryce Mason had a chance to send the game to overtime but hit two of three free throws with three seconds left.

“There is a reason why this is one of the best rivalries in B.C. right now,” smiled Steveston-London head

coach Mike Stoneburgh. “I’m only 36 but I’m going to have a heart attack or be full of grey hair soon. Hats off to our kids. Twice they were down by 14, got into foul trouble and battled back.

“Zach doesn’t get enough props.

He didn’t really play a lot in Grades 8-to-10 coming off the bench and barely played last season as a Grade 11. He has stepped up huge for us and is one of the key reasons we do well. He can lock people down with good defence and also attacks the hoop.”

Folllowing the heartbreaking defeat, Wildcats head coach Tony WongHen was quick to remind his players that not a lot has changed. Win their next two games and they are back in position of playing off for a provincial berth.

“We weren’t happy with the draw but we still very much have a shot at it,” he said. “The parity in Richmond right now is what makes this so exciting. Basketball is a game of runs and their’s went just a little longer than ours. I’m proud of our boys. They know what it takes to win now and know they can beat these teams.”

Should Friday’s elimination games at Steveston-London go to form, all four Richmond teams will be in action at the Oval next week.

The Wildcats take on Point Grey at 8 p.m. The Richmond Colts face John Oliver at 6:15 p.m. Wins would mean the city rivals meet next Wednesday at 2:45 p.m. in another do-or-die game. The Colts fell 90-74 to STM. The McNair Marlins take on Gladstone at 2:45 p.m. Friday after dropping a 94-71 decision to Byrne Creek.

Canada West playoff series features Richmond trio A

trio of former Richmond senior girls basketball standouts will be in action this weekend in Abbotsford as the Fraser Valley Cascades host the University of Calgary Dinos to open the Canada West playoffs.

Anmol Mattu and Bobbi-Jo Colburn have been fixtures in the Dinos’ starting line-up, while Jessica Zawada is coming off the bench for the Cascades.

Mattu, who led Steveston-London to its first-ever provincial tourney berth in her Grade 12 year, has started all 20 games for Calgary this season. The junior vice-captain is averaging 5.6 points per game and 2.2 assists from the point guard position.

Underdog Griffins & Strikers thrive in city playoffs Mark Booth

A

couple of underdogs stole the show at the Richmond Juvenile Girls Basketball Championships.

The Palmer Griffins held off the McRoberts Strikers 24-21 to earn the school its first city girls basketball title in 14 years. Both teams advanced to this week’s Vancouver and District Championships, a scenario few would have predicted.

The Steveston-London Sharks and McMath Wildcats entered the Richmond tourney as heavy favourites to meet in championship game.

The Sharks went through league play unbeaten (6-0), while the Wildcats (5-1) were right behind them.

However, the Griffins (3-3) came through with a big 40-37 semi-final upset of McMath, while the Strikers (2-4) stunned the Wildcats 35-32.

Two months earlier, Palmer coaches Daniel Chang and Isabelle Chung didn’t even know if they would have a team to coach.

With low enrollment numbers, there were not enough players to form separate Juvenile and Bantam teams. Instead, six Grade 8s were aged up to join four Grade 9s.

The Griffins dropped a 17-point decision to the Wildcats back in December and played them

tougher in a 32-20 loss in their final regular season game on Jan. 24.

That set the stage for the upset.

“We always knew for us to have a shot at winning city, we would have to beat McMath, so it was something we always kept in the back of our minds,” said Chang. “I think after the first two games, the girls understood McMath’s motion offense, physicality, and what we had to do to take away their best options. We also went over a bit of film, and just laid out a game plan that, if executed, would get us the win.”

Palmer also needed some clutch performances and captain Kelsha Wong stepped up with 15 points to help erase a tough start for her

team. The Griffins’ press was a big part of the second half with Fiona Vergel de Dios doing a terrific job guarding the Wildcats’ top offensive player and also chipping in with 11 points.

“We made the shots we had to make down the stretch, and the Grade 8s hold their composure and chipped in,” added Chang.

The Palmer roster also features: Rana Ghadymimahani, Seema AlTabbaa, Mary Win, Mariya Konovalova, Katarina Provci, Joan Liu, Haruhi Asada and Sophie Co. In similar fashion, the Strikers brought some confidence into their semi-final tilt with Steveston-London. They lost both regular season meetings against the Sharks but

hung tough in a 28-18 defeat just six days prior to the semi-final rematch.

“We talked about what we had to do as a team to shut down their top scorers and our girls really stepped up,” said Teresa DeBou, who praised the inside play of Jaya Sidhu and Kyra Bates, who has made significant strides since the start of the season.

DeBou, a former Steveston Packer standout and now an elementary teacher at Garden City, is back coaching at the high school level after watching her daughter Jessica Jones have a leading role in McMath reaching the provincial “AAA” championship game last season.

What lured her to McRoberts is a chance to coach her niece Emma Hodgins and to help out at a school where volleyball is the unofficial number one sport. She is sharing the coaching duties with longtime teacher Dave Milholm.

“Other sports are most of these girls’ priorities. We have volleyball, soccer, fastpitch players and even a competitive gymnast,” added DeBou. “It’s a fun group to coach and it’s great to see them have success in basketball too.”

The Strikers’ roster also includes Minal Nijhawan, Isabella Boquist, Hana Terencio, Aaliyah Libatique, Kirstin Mann, Amber Chow, Sydney Lipu and Nikita Johnson.
