hat a weekend.

Last Friday, the leader of the “free world” (that moniker is sounding ever-more surreal) decreed that thousands of innocent, law-abiding citizens were to be detained or deported at American airports because of their country of origin — all predominantly Muslim.

Sunday, a man walks into a mosque in Quebec City, opens fire murdering six people, leaving others clinging to life.

It’s understandable if our Muslim friends are feeling on edge. They’re not alone.

Just yesterday, I got an email from a woman reporting a swastika in Steveston. Graffiti hardly compares to a shooting death, but as she said, “I’m Jewish, it feels like too much, too close to home.” And with everything else that’s going on...

That’s the sinister nature of terror; it seeps into our psyches and colours everything.

The day after the 9/11 attacks, my neighbour’s four-year-old son went missing. It turned out he had decided to go visit his older brother at school so headed out on his tricycle. Two women on their power walk spotted him and called 911. When my neighbour went to pick him up at the community police station, an officer asked her what language her son spoke because he wasn’t responding to queries. She said he wasn’t talking yet, because, as she later told me, she was too afraid to “admit” Arabic.

New York is a long way from Richmond, but the repercussions were being felt.

But we have a choice. We can focus on terror or we can focus on the vigils held across the country, including here in Richmond, where 170 people from all faiths came to stand in unity with the Muslim community.

We can talk about travel bans or we can talk about The Southsiders — loud, proud Whitecaps fans who follow the team to games in Seattle and Portland — that has cancelled all road trips to the U.S. until the ban is lifted.

They refuse to leave anyone behind.

Even in the case of my neighbour, the story we need to hear is that when two women saw a little boy frozen with fear smack in the middle of Railway Avenue, they went out to get him. When he refused to budge, they stood on the road with him and waved cars to go around until police arrived.

We can’t deny an anti-Muslim/immigrant attitude is out there among some, but when it comes to terrorist attacks, we need to remember all recent ones in Canada have been perpetrated by disturbed individuals with mental health and addiction issues.

These are hardly the glorious martyrs they would have us believe, and their actions don’t deserve the pervasive fear and distrust they’re meant to spread when so many more among us do the right thing.

Big money shouldn’t be running the province Dear Editor, Enough is enough with big money donations!

The New York Times recently published an article shaming Premier Christy Clark and her party.

They wrote, “Unlike many other provinces in Canada, British Columbia has no limits on political donations. Wealthy individuals, corporations, unions and even foreigners are allowed to donate large amounts to political parties there.”

This is why we see the BC Liberal Party with hundreds of thousands of dollars to spend on the election in an attempt to sway voters. Personally, it does not sit well with me, knowing that corporations and foreign investors have a major hand in how B.C. is run, which ultimately trickles down to how Richmond is run.

This government has done nothing to preserve our neighbourhoods, help work-

ing-class families get ahead or support our most vulnerable citizens, such as seniors in care or at-risk youth.

Instead, this government is trying to convince the public we need to spend billions of dollars on the Massey Tunnel replacement bridge, when rapid public transit would make the most sense for commuters; or that the Site C dam, which also costs upwards of $8 billions is a great investment.

They fail to mention that B.C. won’t see the financial benefits of that dam for more than 70 years.

It’s time to put an end to the spin and to corporations running our province. Voter turnout in Richmond for the last provincial election was a mere 51 per cent. We can do better this time round. We owe it to our city and our province.

School renos on track, actually Dear Editor, Re: “Funding is a $50M penalty, not a change of heart, “Letters, Jan. 18.

While the provincial government’s funding of education leaves much to be desired generally, specifically with respect to Anderson elementary school’s expansion, the government has not been “dragging its feet” since the “convenient photo op for the BC Liberal party” last year.

As any Anderson parent or student could tell you, construction has been underway

since August. Even with delays caused by the unusually cold and snowy weather this winter, the new addition is still scheduled to be ready for the new school year in September.

One year to build a new school addition does not seem unusually slow to me....

Admittedly, I’m an American expat and more used to public education being in far worse straits.

It didn’t take the Court of Appeal long ...

Last year, I reported on the B.C. Supreme Court case McKendry v. McKendry. The Court held that a son who lived with his mother until she died (in 2012) did not own her home outright, but rather held it in Trust for him and his siblings.

Well, the son appealed. Reasons were released by the Court of Appeal earlier this week in a brief but important judgement.

The deceased’s son moved into the house in 2006. The deceased added the son as a joint tenant owner in 2008, but it was not a true joint tenancy with right of survivorship. The deceased’s Lawyer prepared a Declaration of Trust in 2008, but the son did not sign it. Another Declaration of Trust was prepared in 2010 with a different Lawyer, but the son did not sign it either.

In late-2010, the deceased prepared a note in which she stated that she would give her house to her son, in full. The deceased confirmed it in a telephone conversation with the Lawyer.

The Court of Appeal held here that, since the intentions of the deceased were clear, it was not necessary to have a deed of gift done (to confirm who really “owned” the house). The son owned it, and the siblings had no interest in the house.

I cannot tell from the case whether the deceased intended to bequeath the vast majority of her Estate to one of her five children. The size of her total Estate is not discussed, although it does not appear there was much else. It was clear, though, that the deceased intended to give her house to her son. In B.C., intention reigns.

Answer terror with love

MP may help halt bridge Dear Editor: Re: “Tunnel not about transit,” Letters, Jan. 27.

On one point, I have good news for Peter van der Velden, the writer from Tsawwassen. Even if his MP did not take action to get a federal environmental assessment of the tunnel-bridge project, our MP for Steveston-Richmond East did act, and he seems to have got results.

MP Joe Peschisolido says he spoke with Hon. Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change. The minister has now directed the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency to recommend whether to proceed with an assessment.

That’s a good step.

On the writer’s main point, he is

simply right. The project aims to remove the Massey Tunnel as an obstacle to dredging the navigation channel much deeper for larger ships, enabling even further industrialization of the Fraser River.

Documents from Port Metro Vancouver and Fraser Surrey Docks make that obvious.

The scope of a federal assessment would include proposals for activities “that may be a source of cumulative effects.”

Although the B.C. Minister of Transport and his surrogates claim there are “no plans to dredge,” records show that the port has assertively sought removal of the tunnel for that purpose.

Dear Editor, The massacre in a Quebec mosque last weekend is a horrific tragedy, which has shaken Canadians from coast to coast to coast. This act of terrorism has caused pain to every peace-loving Canadian, and has put fear and anxiety in the minds and hearts of our Muslim brothers and sisters throughout Canada.

Since this tragedy occurred, there have been vigils and expressions of sympathy and support for the Muslim community all across the land. Locally, more than 200 people gathered at the mosque at Blundell Road and No. 5 Road on Monday (Jan. 30) evening.

The vigil attracted people representing the diversity of this community. The attendees included Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, Coun. Chak Au and a number of other community leaders. I also had the privilege of being invited to address the gathering and offer sup-

port to the Muslim community.

Every speaker offered his/her condolences to the Muslim community and assured it of their unconditional support in this hour of need. Each one of them emphasized that Richmond is a culturally diverse and harmonious community. Our Highway to Heaven, a stretch of No. 5 Road with more than 20 different places of worship, reflects the uniqueness not only of Richmond but all of Canada.

We shouldn’t be disheartened by this tragedy, but move on. Each one of us must continue to fight against the forces of prejudice, racism, hatred and violence. As our Prime Minister has put it so well, we should continue to meet fear and hatred with love and compassion.

Survey is your chance to speak out Dear Editor, Re: “Walls, fences don’t make neighbourly neighbourhoods,” News, Dec. 2.

The City of Richmond has done what many residents have long asked for: reconsider our bylaws on mega houses that are taking over our neighbourhoods. Are we taking our responsibility by participating in this local democracy?

I suggest it is not good enough to just complain. We must all take some of our valuable time and participate. The deadline to com-

plete a survey is fast approaching on March 5.

This is a critical issue for the livability of neighbourhoods. We must ask ourselves: Are we concerned about the negative effects of massive houses, which includes the loss of privacy and sunlight from new houses that tower over their neighbour’s backyard fences.

Does it bother us that we’re seeing less and less room for plants, trees and birds, while new “Richmond Specials” take up increasingly more space for huge driveways,

garages, bricks and gates. Do you wonder about fire safety and drainage problems with houses so close together?

I believe there are solid reasons to change the bylaws to increase building setbacks from property lines, increase green space and restrict unwelcoming entry gates and walls. Whatever your views are, if you don’t complete a survey (LetsTalkRichmond.ca), your opinion will not be counted.

I was reminded of that as I read Shattered Mirror, the report from Ed Greenspon of the Public Policy Forum (PPF) on the Canadian media industry. (Disclosure: I attended one of the PPF’s round table discussions this past fall in Vancouver on behalf of Glacier Media and the BC and Yukon Community Newspapers Association.)

It’s a comprehensive report that does an excellent job of describing and analyzing the challenges facing Canadian media in a global digital age. More importantly, it has several recommendations on how to help support Canadian media and local news, including closing a tax loophole that gives advertisers a break when advertising in non-Canadian-owned online media (a break they don’t get for foreign-owned print advertising) and using the money generated from it, estimated at $300 million to $400 million per year, to fund local news and new media initiatives.

But what I think the report does best is make it clear why media outlets struggle in the digital age — it answers the question about not only how the food gets to the grocery store, but how much the farmer gets when you pay $1.29 for that tomato.

People have long misunderstood who pays for news, and how. In the days of paid circulation, many believed that they were supporting the entire cost of their

local newspaper when they plunked down their pocket change for a copy. In reality, reader revenue — where it exists — covers only a fraction of the real cost of reporting news, never mind the mechanical and logistical costs of preparing, printing and delivering it to readers.

Even the many community newspapers who deliver the news free of charge still hear the grumbles from unhappy subjects of coverage that we are just “trying to sell papers” (!)

The advent of the Internet has made people more aware of the real way people pay for content — with their attention. Sadly, this realization has come just at the point where the real money online goes not to the people who pay to produce what you read, but the people who organize and distribute it — primarily Google and Facebook, two US-based corporations that between them employ a grand total of zero journalists in Canada.

However, readers are led to believe, because they continue to be flooded with seemingly ever-increasing amounts of content for which they do not pay, and because they continue to be bombarded with marketing messages attached to that content, that somebody must be making enough money to pay for it.

They need to know that the model has shifted entirely. Advertising dollars online have become largely detached from content, and those who package others’ news to readers get the overwhelming share. Those who pay journalists to perform civic journalism simply can’t afford to do so off the dregs of digital revenue Facebook

and Google have yet to siphon up.

The fundamental contract of media in the 20th century between reader, publisher and advertiser, when applied to the digital landscape, is as shattered as the mirror Greenspon uses to title his report.

People need to realize that this contract has been fundamentally disrupted, and that if it continues without some form of change, those who pay to create local journalism, many of who have already been forced to cut back severely, will simply disappear from the landscape, to be replaced with nothing, in the case of countless communities. That’s the message we, as media outlets, need to take from this report and bring to public attention.

If readers want to keep getting news as they’ve been getting it – that is, without paying directly – the Greenspon report’s recommendations provide a workable answer. If those aren’t acceptable to the public, or to the government, then the choices are for readers to pay for that content directly, or watch it disappear.

Greenspon is trying to keep that from happening, and I salute him and the PPF for their work. But neither the PPF, nor the media industry in Canada, nor the government will have the final say. In the end, you, as the reader, will.

And in the end, if the farmer can’t afford to grow tomatoes, you won’t find them at the grocery store.

uch like a teenager’s face, the dredging of Steveston Channel requires constant attention.

Unfortunately, one area of the channel, in front of No. 1 Road, has been neglected for decades, resulting in an 8,500-cubic-metre pimple, or hump, of mud forming, with the potential of capsizing a boat at low tide.

“It’s a hump of mud in no-man’s land,” explained Robert Kiesman, chair of the Steveston Harbour Authority Board of Directors.

To remove this relatively small hump will cost $180,000, showing the scope of the costs of dredging the Fraser River.

The trapezoid-shaped hump is the size of about 100 shipping containers, spread across the channel floor. It’s a busy part of the harbour, with commercial, recreational and government boats docking nearby.

The area is said to be under no jurisdiction of any government, hence the growing problem.

“It’s more symbolic, as well, because it’s been a jurisdictional nightmare for 25 years and no one’s assumed responsibility for it. The reason why this is happening today is the province, city and harbour authority jointly, equally funded this,” said Kiesman.

“It’s not the local channel, it’s not a water lot, it’s just a hump in the middle of both of them that got lost . . . it’s a total grey area,” he added.

The hump’s removal is in addition to ongoing dredging of the eastern part of Steveston Channel, from Imperial Landing to Britannia Heritage Shipyards. All told, $1.35 million will be spent by the three groups to remove about 150,000 tonnes of sediment this winter.

“Funding dredging in Steveston Harbour has been an ongoing issue since the federal government downloaded responsibility for dredging as part of

the 1998 Canada Marine Act,” noted a March 2016 city staff report.

“I’ve seen a lot of boats in my time run aground and someone’s finally showing leadership,” said Bob Baziuk, the harbour’s general manager.

The western channel was dredged earlier with funding from Port of Vancouver. This latest round of dredging has no monetary support from the port.

Over the past five years, the city has committed $2 million to dredging Steveston Channel.

Mayor Malcolm Brodie noted that yhe dredging is necessary for the city’s tall ships festivals this year, which will see the docking of a Japanese tall ship, the Kaiwo Maru, at Garry Point. The city paid $575,000 to bring the ship here in May.

ROX sees 65 visitors a day: Oval Graeme Wood

he Richmond Olympic Oval says it has more than doubled the number of expected visitors to its Olympic museum in the first year of operation.

According to the redacted (partially censored) Business Plan 2.0 put forth to Richmond city council, and subsequently the public, in January, 2013, the projected attendance in the first year of operation was 10,000 visitors.

This projection, however, came before the Richmond Olympic Experience (ROX) increased its reported budget in December, 2014, by 75 per cent ($4.3 million), to feature, among other things, interactive virtual reality games.

No amended business plan was put forth publicly after the budget increased, and ROX’s opening was delayed one year; however, nearing opening day, the Oval stated it was targeting 11,590 visitors.

But, Oval spokesperson Aran Kay told the Richmond News last week ROX recorded 23,270 visitors from opening day (Nov. 21, 2015) to Nov. 30, 2016.

The average established Olympic museum is said to take in 100,000 visitors.

The city has stated it expects attendance growth in the first five years of

operations, although there are no exact estimates given.

The Oval will not reveal how much gate revenue ROX took in, on grounds that “it is proprietary information that may effect the business affairs of the corporation.”

For similar reasons, Kay said Business Plan 3.0, which was said to go before council in 2014, but never did (even in a redacted format), will not be released to the public.

It’s the input of those visitors that was instrumental in the Oval’s board of directors approving a $1.4 million renovation to ROX that is to commence March, 2018 and finish that fall.

“Staff and our volunteers have had the chance to observe and solicit feedback from thousands of visitors.

We now have a better understanding of visitor objectives and areas of interest, plus the flow and movement dynamics within this highly interactive and digital museum,” said Kay. “The Olympic Experience upgrade and expansion plan focuses on better highlighting our feature exhibits, adding new and fresh exhibits to encourage repeat visitation, relocating less popular exhibits, and addressing visitor flow through the venue. The objective of the expansion and upgrade is to improve

the overall visitor experience and to encourage repeat visitation,” said Kay. In order to freshen up new exhibits, Oval and City of Richmond staff have maintained the need to visit other Olympic Museum Network (OMN) facilities around the world, annually.

In 2016, Kay said two staff members visited the flagship OMN museum in Lausanne, Switzerland.

One staff member attended the Olympic Museums Network Annual General Assembly in China.

As well, “one staff member visited the Olympic Museum in Nanjing and met with government officials in Yanqing District of Beijing (alpine venue for Beijing 2022) regarding establishing an Olympic museum in their district,” said Kay. The upcoming renovation will be paid for by hotel room taxes. Last year, city council approved increasing said tax from two to three per cent, after the tourism reserves were drained.

The Richmond Hotel Association approved the measure (17 of 24 hotels), according to a staff report.

The tax will fund destination marketing, sport hosting and tourism attractions, such as ROX. The Oval is a subsidiary corporate entity of the City of Richmond.

German-based engineering firm was surprised to learn that a key component of Harvest Power’s composting system that it designed has been effectively shut down.

GICON Engineering North America spokesperson Jan Claus told the Richmond News that its anaerobic digester, or “energy garden,” at the Harvest Power composting site is essential for eliminating fugitive odours that have blanketed Richmond for years.

Essentially, stinky compost product goes into an air-tight chamber (“energy garden”) and expels gas, which is then burned for electricity. The end product is solid waste has few odorous compounds.

“Compared to untreated food waste, the solid output from the Energy Garden has a negligible contribution to odour problems experienced in the downstream composting process,” wrote Claus in a letter to the News in January.

“It would be counterproductive to stop the anaerobic digestion process and treat the food waste solely with composting technology. Conversely, since only a small proportion of the total amount of organic waste received

by Harvest Power is actually treated in the Energy Garden prior to composting, it would be beneficial if the Energy Garden would be operated as intended and treat as much incoming food waste as it was designed for, as the consequence would be less untreated, odour-rich organic waste being processed in the composting facility,” stated Claus.

In December, Harvest Power CEO Chris Kasper spoke to residents at a public town hall meeting to address what his company was doing to eliminate the foul stench.

He explained that the energy garden produces the foul odours.

“That energy garden. It cost, what? $25 million to build. And we shut it down. And we’ve significantly reduced the amount of green waste coming into the compost facility,” Kasper told the audience.

company’s technology and the technology of biogas electric generators, in general.

“The intensive, odour-producing acidification process takes place within sealed containers in the strict absence of oxygen.

The biogas that ultimately results from this process is used to generate electricity for the public grid and heat for use as process heating. It is not released untreated to the atmosphere,” said Claus.

GICON said it reached out to Harvest Power for clarification, after the News paraphrased Kasper’s comments in an article.

“We asked Harvest Power (Gary Aguinaga, SVP, COO Energy Group) for confirmation of this statement. He told us that Chris Kasper’s comment was taken out of the context. He indicated to us that they had curtailed processing food waste in the AD (anaerobic digester) plant as part of their troubleshooting efforts to mitigate the odour problems they are experiencing,” said Claus.

The News then asked Harvest Power spokesperson Stephen Bruyneel to clarify if the energy garden had, in fact, been “shut down.”

“The confusion is around the definition of ‘shut down.’ Harvest voluntarily suspended operations of its anaerobic digester for the digestion of solid organic materials in October 2016. The receiving area of the building is now being used to support our composting operations,” stated Bruyneel.

In a follow-up email, Bruyneel stated the energy garden is now producing a “minimal amount” of electricity to keep it on standby, with the use of a sugar-based liquid fuel.

As such, it’s not being operated as intended, as Claus suggests it should.

In January, following the issuance of a new air quality permit, Metro Vancouver received 425 complaints about Harvest-like odours.

Metro determined the company violated its five-kilometre odour boundary three times, although, in reality, the facility is believed to be releasing odours almost daily, according to residents.

“We are continuing to put all of our efforts into odour reduction and are seeing reductions in emissions from the facility, which has translated into lower odours,” stated Bruyneel.

ayor Malcolm Brodie and the City of Richmond should butt out of Delta’s business.

That’s what an irate Coun.

Bruce McDonald had to say at Delta council’s weekly meeting Monday, not mincing words with his response to a letter from Brodie to the B.C. Lottery Corporation conveying Richmond’s opposition to a potential casino in Delta.

“Whether a casino comes to Delta or not, I don’t even know if I’m in favour of that idea, but I have never, in all my years doing this stuff, seen where one community was asking a govern-

ment agency to not allow a neighbouring community to have access to something,” said McDonald, who was first elected to council in 1987.

“We’ve known for a long time that Mayor Brodie doesn’t believe anything of consequence lives on this side of the river, and we shouldn’t build a bridge, but now you go to the government and say, ‘What’s next?

We shouldn’t have a car lot if somebody wants to put one up because Richmond thinks it’s not in their favour?” asked McDonald.

“I am absolutely incensed that they should stay on their side of the river and do what they want and if somebody builds something that’s in competition with them, they should try to win… This is

absurd.”

The letter by Brodie to the lottery corporation states that Richmond is opposed “to any casino south of the Fraser River” and that Richmond must be fully consulted and given at least 90 days to respond.

McDonald said Delta should write a letter to Brodie “to tell them to butt out” and the rest of council agreed, although staff will write one with a more diplomatic tone.

McDonald’s colleagues noted Richmond has its own gaming facility in the River Rock Casino Resort and doesn’t want any competition.

Ted Townsend, a spokesperson for the City of Richmond, said Brodie declined to respond to the comments.

T

he ability to make a crowd of people sway and move to the music can be an intoxicating experience for a DJ. It’s one that Richmond’s Mandeep Sandhu — DJ Emenes to his fans — knows well after two-plus decades in the business, playing his own brand of mainstream dance music he has infused with Indian influences.

It’s that unique blend that proved to be a big hit when he played at India’s largest music festival last December.

“It’s such an empowering feeling,” he said. “I enjoy being able to express the music I like and see the effect it has on people.”

At the Sunburn Music Festival in India, Emenes — pronounced to correspond with his initials M and S — performed for tens of thousands who grooved to his special mixes that incorporate Indian instruments such as sitars, tumbis, dhols, dholaks, plus various Indian chants and vocals.

“It was pretty amazing. Sunburn was always on my list of things to do,” he said, adding he was quite fortunate to get a shot at being the only Canadian invited to perform.

To show his Canadian pride to the crowd, Emenes donned a Canadian Olympic hockey jersey with his name printed on the back.

music that I was infusing with an Indian element. I was exploring a mix of dance with a South Asian element.”

He was only scheduled to play one set, but the audience’s reaction to him was so positive that the music festival’s organizers, who he had earlier pitched to get a spot to play, granted him a second show.

“I had been expecting a different reaction from the crowd, but it was awesome. It was pretty much the same as here,” he said. “It emphasized that music is truly universal.”

Taking the divine tour of duty In a bid to deepen understanding and hear concerns, personnel from 10 security and first responder agencies embarked on an intimate tour of religious institutions within Richmond's visible minorities. The News joined the day-long tour ALANCAMPBELL

istening intently, with some shielding their eyes from the early morning sun breaching the windows on the second floor of the strip mall, 22 people were hanging on Rabbi Yacheal Baitelman’s every word.

For most of the men in the audience of national security agencies and first responders from Richmond and beyond, it was likely the first time they’d worn a kippah.

Standing in front of the “holy art” — a Torah of three, hand-written scrolls containing more than 300,000 letters from the first books of the Hebrew bible — Baitelman told of what life may look like without law enforcement.

“The (enforcement of the law) is an integral part of a civilized society,” said Baitelman, a rabbi from the community of Chabad Richmond, which has a “Jewish centre” on Blundell Road at Railway Avenue.

“Richmond is essentially a safe place to live; just the other day this young First Nations man came up to me in Safeway and asked if I was a rabbi. He shook my hand. That wouldn’t have happened in my native New York.

“But sometimes people will shout derogatory stuff out of the car on a Friday night, when they’ve perhaps had too much to drink.

“There are security issues around the world and we’re very aware of that. But we just want to live in a safe and peaceful place.”

There are approximately 4,000-5,000 Jews living in Richmond, the second biggest population of its kind in the Lower Mainland.

However, Baitelman said not everyone in the Jewish community thinks the same way; “we all have very strong opinions of what is happening in Israel and around the world.

We frequently don’t agree, but we must be respectful.

“We talk about tolerance, but that’s not enough. We need to respect each other, we believe that we are all here for a reason and a purpose.

“But you don’t need to understand everyone to respect them. Even if you don’t understand them, it doesn’t make them any less godly.”

There are, however, added Baitelman, “security concerns in the community,” before making reference to Sunday’s deadly shooting of six people in a Muslim mosque in Quebec City.

“Quebec was a tragedy and was an assault on every one of us Canadians,” he said.

Asked by a member of Richmond FireRescue about the etiquette of first responders attending an emergency inside a place of worship, such as a synagogue, Baitelman said the “preservation of life is more important.”

“If it’s a question of stepping over books and saving someone’s life, then the life is always more important; we will deal with the books later.

“That’s one worry that shouldn’t be on your mind.

“We also believe in the preservation of life, even if it is breaking the law. You can take someone’s life, if they’re threatening the life of another.”

When asked about the different Jewish faiths in Richmond and the Lower Mainland, Baitelman talked first about how he, and others in his community, consider themselves Canadian, not Jewish-Canadian.

“We are not membership-based; we are more of an outreach organization, with 400 donors, some of whom I’ve never met,” he said.

“And we don’t call this a synagogue; more a centre for Jewish learning and living.”

n ‘Sense of unease’ after Quebec

About two blocks south of Chabad, the fellow Jewish congregation of Beth Tikvah — on Geal Road, near Williams Road and Railway Avenue — the tour was welcomed with open arms by the “less obviously Jewish” Rabbi Howard Siegal.

“You may notice I don’t have a beard,” smiled Siegal, referring to his colleague at Chabad and describing his congregation as being a “non-orthodox, conservative movement.”

That wasn’t the only marked departure from Beitelman’s Chabad; the men were now wearing different coloured kippahs and were in a much more formal setting than the second floor of a strip mall.

The ornate room, festooned with murals, symbols, flags and architecture was tempered by the casual dress and disarming manner of Siegal.

And in recognition of the likely diverse crowd in front of him, Siegal asked if they were Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist or even atheist?

The atheists seemed reluctant, at first, to put their hands up. When they did, Siegal suggested they may, in actual fact, be agnostic.

“Atheists absolutely don’t believe; an agnostic doesn’t think there is, buuuuut, if God should show up…”

Explaining the “differences of agreement” in Israel, where the orthodox movement is intertwined with the Israeli government, creating a lot of tension, Siegal said the Jewish people “all believe in the same God.” Referring to the scrolls behind him, as like Baitelman, Siegal told of how the 4,000-year-old words are continually re-

interpreted on a regular basis, because “they don’t translate directly to life today.”

“An eye for an eye, for example, has been re-interpreted to mean you will need to compensate me for the loss of that eye,” he said.

Given the make-up of his audience on the day, Siegal inevitably spoke of security in Richmond and in Canada.

“I do feel safe and secure living in Richmond; but I do remember not too long ago the swastikas on garage doors here,” he said.

“I remember telling my great, grandparents, who don’t live here, about the swastikas and anti-Semitism in Richmond and they just laughed and said ‘that isn’t anti-Semitism, anti-Semitism is someone burning your house down.’

“I agree that it’s not the same, but it is a symptom. We can’t live with that and they do become concerns.

“Our synagogue was concerned at the time and we did beef up security here. I wouldn’t say we still have a sense of fear, but there is a sense of unease, perhaps.

Referring to the tragedy in Quebec on Sunday, Siegal said there is still a sense of “it can’t happen here.”

“Nobody would have ever thought it would happen in Quebec. None of us want to believe it will actually happen to us. But we have to be more concerned about the people around us and challenge ourselves here in our synagogue to remind ourselves of that.

“You see events such as in Quebec and you can see it’s starting to come here. But when you start demonizing one religion, you start demonizing them all.”

Think of hijab before acting: Muslim leader Islamic sheikh tells tour group to ignore religious customs if lives are at stake

ust because a woman is running out of the room, it doesn’t mean she’s trying to escape or to arm herself.

Sheikh Murtaza Bachoo, an imam at the Az-Zahraa Islamic Center on No. 5 and Blundell Roads, described to his audience of police personnel and first responders the subtle difference between a suspect reaching for a gun and a Muslim woman dashing for her hijab.

“This is important for your line of work,” said Bachoo, during a presentation he was giving at his mosque, as part of a day-long goodwill and understanding tour of visible minorities’ religious facilities on Wednesday, which included visits to Richmond’s Jewish synagogues.

“If you enter a Muslim household and a woman sees a male officer, she may bolt into the next room. She isn’t necessarily running to get a weapon.

“I understand that’s what you may think, that’s what you’re trained to do. But you should consider the alternative.”

Moments earlier, the entourage of about 22 leading personnel from 10 agencies — including the CN Police, RCMP National Security, Richmond RCMP, Richmond FireRescue, private security firms, Corrections Canada and police forces from across the Lower Mainland — had taken off their shoes, as per the Muslim custom, before being escorted to the “male side” of the mosque.

The group was educated on Arabic terms, the percentage of Muslims who speak Arabic and a quick lesson on the history of Muslim migration to Canada, which started in 1865, before proliferating in the ‘60s and ‘70s to the now 1.2 to 1.3 million people of Islamic faith in the country, 90-120,000 of whom call B.C. home.

Only a very few of those Canadian Muslims, said Bachoo, wear the niqab, which covers almost all of the face, as opposed to the aforementioned hijab, which covers only the head and neck areas.

“If there is a female officer with you, perhaps ask her to identify the woman,” he added, referring to the occasions where an officer of the law needs to identify someone wearing the niqab.

“If (there isn’t a female officer present), ask her to pull down the niqab for a few seconds; there is a possibility she won’t, it will depend on her.”

Bachoo explained to the group the thinking behind the hijab and niqab, which a Muslim woman has to wear when she leaves the house or in the presence of males outside her immediate family.

“She doesn’t want to be recognized as a woman, she wants to be recognized for who she is,” said Bachoo.

“And if someone is looking down when talking to you, it may not be because they’re suspicious or are trying to hide something; it’s a mark of respect.”

If a Muslim, continued Bachoo, is “more engaged in their faith, it doesn’t mean they are extremists.

“Political activism is not an indication of extremism; we want our young Muslims to be politically active and sometimes they have been unfairly scrutinized by police.”

n Islamophobia affecting daily life in Richmond

Sunday’s tragic events in Quebec City — where six Muslims were shot to death during a targeted attack in a mosque — were clearly at the top of Bachoo’s mind when he broached the subject of Islamophobia.

Making a direct link to the deadly shooting, Bachoo said Islamophobia is a growing concern for his community, even in Richmond and in the Lower Mainland.

“Attacks around the world are increasing all the time,” he said.

“I don’t have to make a case; just look at Quebec, that was an act of terrorism, plain and simple.

“It’s affecting the lives of our children and their parents every day. It’s not nice for children to be called ‘Osama Bin Ladens’ all the time. Mosques are being attacked and burned down all over the world.

“People are (phoning) here saying ‘the only good Muslim is a dead one,’ after watching American Sniper.

“Women are being physically and verbally abused on the SkyTrain.

“When they report these things, I would ask you to take it seriously and follow it up.”

The group learned of Muslim customs, such as hand-shaking (or the lack thereof), why they use coin-sized prayer tablets and why a Muslim would never throw down the Qur’an.

“We pray five times a day and you will often hear us asking where north is, as we sometimes need to pray wherever we are,” said Bachoo.

“But the most important prayer is Friday’s prayer.”

Fasting during Ramadan, the pilgrimage to Mecca and dietary requirements (including no pork or alcohol) were also communicated before tackling the thorn of “jihad.”

“This term is usually associated with violent acts,” said Bachoo.

“But it is important to understand what it means to mainstream Muslims, such as us, and what it means to radicals.

“Every time there is a struggle for a mainstream Muslim, that is a jihad.

“This, for example, is what Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela had. They had a jihad, a struggle.

“There is no room for killing in our faith.”

Asked by a member of the group what he thought of the supposed push for Sharia Law — which some people feel flies in the face of most Western values — in some parts of North America, Bachoo cautioned again about people’s understanding of the term.

“Sharia is a path or a way of life (practices, diet, dress), it doesn’t mean we are demanding Sharia Law,” he said.

Asked if, in the case of a medical emergency, first responders need to take off their shoes when entering a mosque, the answer was a flat “no.”

“Our laws are only observed in normal circumstances,” said Bachoo.

“And that would also apply to fasting during Ramadan. If it affects your life badly, then it would be considered haram (harmful).

Before giving a prayer demonstration, Bachoo also explained that, if you see a Muslim praying, “they may not be able to break that prayer to talk to you, unless it’s an emergency; they’re not being disrespectful.”

lthough it was planned weeks ago, Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Kevin Krygier recognized the significance of the timing of the security personnel tour of two of the city’s “more vulnerable” communities.

It just so happened Wednesday’s event — which took in two Jewish synagogues and two Muslim mosques — came three days after the atrocity in Quebec City, where six people were shot to death inside a mosque.

The 22 people from 10 different security agencies and first responder services were brought together after a “collaboration” between Len vanNieuwenhuizen, of the RCMP National Security community outreach program, and Krygier, of the Richmond detachment’s Crime Prevention Unit.

“We’re always trying outreach and Len had been to see the people at Az-Zahraa (Islamic centre in Richmond). They sug-

gested that we should invite everybody out and give them a tour,” Krygier told the Richmond News.

“Our members go by there once a week and actively engage with these (Muslim and Jewish) groups.”

Krygier said the group heard first-hand, valuable information from local Muslim and Jewish n Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Kevin Krygier leaders about what it means if a woman tries to bolt from a room and how to react if there was a fire in a synagogue.

“It has given us a greater depth of understanding and it was great to hear all that in one shot,” added Krygier.

“I think we’ve exceeded our goals; people were very pleased. I think most of them, if not all, walked away feeling very much more informed.”

Brian MacLeod, Richmond Fire-Rescue’s community relations officer, said he thrived on the opportunity to learn more about the different cultures in Richmond and to find out what they need from first responders.

“Getting to make direct contact with the leaders in these groups was invaluable and will undoubtedly help us with education and talks,” said MacLeod after the tour.

“I was very educated today; I knew a little about the two cultures, but this has been a huge benefit to me.

“This will go further than just fire prevention; I don’t think these groups fully understand the services we provide and this will help with that.

“What I learned today will filter down in the department’s training. ‘Life first’ is the strongest message I took away.

“We’re not supposed to take off our boots, so it was great to have some clarity in terms of emergency response.

“We kind of know these things, but to hear it directly from the group’s leaders will take a bit of pressure off first responders.”

W

hat wine is the best match for Chinese food?

It’s like looking for the best match for Western food. Nevertheless, here are four wines that will individually work wonders with the delicious cuisine that is plentiful during the Lunar New Year.

Sparkling wine is always a first choice for an all-purpose beverage and it has that celebratory image.

The Bottega Petalo Moscato Dolce ($15.49 on sale) is an ideal choice. It is a medium, sweet Spumante Italian bubbly produced from Muscat grapes grown between Verona and Venice.

I love its rose petal bouquet. No wonder there is a beautiful rose on the bottle and Petalo (petal) in the name! The floral character extends to its delicious flavour with hints of ginger and nectarine. Serve with dim sum, sweet and sour pork, or even the sponge cakes with fresh fruit and whipped cream.

Another multi-purpose wine that works with most Asian dishes is Riesling. Like the Petalo, Rieslings that are off dry (slightly sweet) work best.

My favourite is the Dr. L (Loosen) 2015 Riesling ($16.99) from Germany’s famous Mosel Valley. It’s like a bowl of fresh fruit salad in your glass, brimming with apples,

peaches, and lemons with a touch of sweetness held in check by the wine’s acidity.

I taught wine appreciation classes for several decades and the Dr. L was often the favourite wine, even with tasters who said they were not fond of Rieslings. But it works with so much Chinese food on several levels.

There is a great deal of refreshing acidity, which cleanses the palate, especially important when there are so many courses.

And the fresh fruit flavours and the wine’s sweet and sour character harmonize with the sauces that often have fruit as an ingredient.

As you switch from lighter courses to heavier ones, the Murphy Goode 2014 Pinot Noir ($21.49) is a versatile Californian red. This is a rich style of Pinot Noir with a bouquet of ripe strawberries with sweet vanilla oak.

Apivio Systems Inc., a Richmondheadquartered developer of communications equipment and software, which includes a line of land-line-based smartphones, is advising its shareholders to reject a buyout bid by, Nuri Telecom Company Limited, a rival company based in Korea.

“The Nuri offer is opportunistic and takes advantage of the current share price without compensating shareholders for the strength of Apivio’s future product pipeline, with several new products scheduled for launch in 2017,” the company stated. According to Apivio, the bid price of 40 cents per share represents a 14 per cent discount to the 52-week high and is significantly below the average valuation of similar transactions.

Even the concern of “range anxiety” – the distance an EV can travel on a single charge – has been reduced by advances in technology, Rogozo said, adding the newly released Chevrolet Bolt can go 325 km before being recharged.

Also fueling the shift is a steadily increasing number of public charging stations for EVs. Presently, Richmond requires new apartment complexes to have 45 per cent of all parking spaces with charging potential. The city provides four, public charging stations that are free to use. Plus, there are another 27 private charging stations, some of which charge fees.

“But with the longer ranges now, you don’t have to charge your car every day, depending on the use,” Rogozo said. “You can charge it overnight, or once a week, at home. So, the need for public charging is not so great. But it’s still important because it provides a sense of confidence to owners out there. And we’ll see more of that.”

Operating since 1996 with a range of incentives — from discounts in bicycles to transit passes — B.C. Scrap-It states it has removed 40,000 polluting vehicles from across the province, recycled 164,332 tires, 57,927 tonnes of steel and reduced carbon emissions by close one million tonnes.

While the recycling numbers are impressive, Rogozo said the most important one to the program is the impact on carbon emissions.

“We’re a little different because the parts from the cars we scrap are not recycled and kept in the system to keep older cars on the road,” Rogozo said.

“Our view is that this is a better environmental outcome because the old cars become raw material and, I joke in public, that they come back as toasters.”

There is no restriction on the age of the vehicle scrapped through BC Scrap-It. But it must have been on the road and fully licensed and insured for six months prior to the transaction and capable of being driven to the scrap yard.

“What that means, then, is we’re taking a vehicle off the road that’s fully operable and spewing smog and carbon emissions into the environment,” Rogozo said.

The list of electric cars that qualify for the incentive program includes those almost entirely powered by electricity and do not exceed $77,000.

“It’s an equity issue, right?” Rogozo said. “If you can afford to spend more than that on a vehicle, I’m not sure you need an incentive.”

BC Scrap-It finances its incentives — there are only 500 of its $6,000 discounts available for 2017 — through the value of the scrap metal recovered and private funding. No government money is currently involved.

Judging by the numbers, the discounts available in B.C. can add up and make car buyers think twice about going electric.

With the BC Scrap-It incentive of $6,000, combined with the provincial government’s electric car ownership incentive (Clean Energy Vehicle Program) of up to $5,000, buyers can get a pretty hefty, $11,000 discount on their new EV. Plus, some manufacturers, such as Nissan, are offering their own buyer’s incentive, Rogozo said. All told, that could add up to a discount of $15,000 on a new Nissan Leaf, which has a base price of around $34,000.

“We tend to attract people who have okay functioning vehicles, but are getting into a higher risk situation for repairs that could be more costly than what their car is worth,” Rogozo said. “And they are saying, ‘What do we do with this thing?’

Tucked away behind Home Depot in a North Richmond business park is one of the most successful fencing clubs in the country that is readily making an impact at national and international levels.

It was just over two decades ago Victor Gantsevich launched Dynamo Fencing. Since then, the club has moved into a more spacious facility to accommodate its growing membership and reputation.

Gantsevich and his son Igor are part of an experienced staff that includes former Olympic and national champions who oversee a wide-range of outstanding talent. That was evident at last weekend’s Canada Cup event at the Richmond Olympic Oval where Dynamo enjoyed a record haul of 16 medals.

Recently, nine club members were also named to the national team that will be competing at the

Pan Am Championships. That is 20 percent of the entire Canadian roster.

The Gantsevichs’ long-term vision is even greater representation through a support program that would go well-beyond excellent coaching.

“Our club goal is to have 50 percent of the national team by 2020 and 100 percent by 2024.

I know that’s a crazy goal but that’s what I am setting out to do,” explained Igor Gantsevich.

“Unfortunately, Sport Canada doesn’t have a bold outlook when it comes to developing high performance athletes in our sport. What we want to do is create our own ‘Own the Podium’ program that would be entirely privately funded.

“Athletes would came here from all over Canada and be completely looked after from accommodations, to food to training.”

Igor estimates it would take about a million dollars in corporate sponsorships to get such non-profit venture up-and-running. He is confident the support will be there, especially as the club continues to produce high-level athletes.

Among them is Richmond’s own Dylan French,

now a sophomore at Notre Dame where he competes at the NCAA level. The former World Cadet Championship bronze medalist in epee was victorious at the recent North American Cup in Columbus Ohio, considered one of the world’s premier U20 age group events.

French will soon be coming home as part of the Canadian team competing at the Men’s Epee World Cup at the Richmond Olympic Oval (Feb. 17-19), which is being co-hosted by Fencing Canada and Dynamo.

“That was probably Dylan’s biggest win since the World Cadet Championships,” continued Gantsevich. “He has been hovering around that top four but managed to breakthrough this time. What makes it impressive is competing at that level with the pressure of being a full-time student.”

Gantsevich adds the World Cup will feature 180 fencers from around the world which is double the size of the inaugural event four years ago. That comes at the start of another four-year Olympic cycle when athletes typically cut back on their competition schedule.

Pub night for former Colts star raises over $11,000 A

pub night in honour of Richmond native and former CFL player Bob Skemp raised over $11,000.

A packed Pioneer’s Pub last Saturday night featured numerous CFL alumni, family and friends to help Skemp with his medical costs required after back surgery went awry.

Skemp was a football and basketball standout at Richmond High in the early 1980s. He went on to spend a couple of seasons with the Richmond Raiders junior football program before being drafted by the B.C. Lions. Following a trade to Toronto, Skemp started at offensive guard for seven straight seasons, helping the Argos win the Grey Cup in 1991.

After his retirement, back problems resulted in a number of surgeries with the last one leaving him partially paralyzed. With medical expenses well beyond his coverage plan, a group of Skemp’s

As a highly-coveted free agent, the Canucks locked him up just weeks later but he seemed destined for a year or two of seasoning with their American Hockey League farm team.

Stecher nearly cracked their lineup out of training camp and became an instant fan favourite.

Three weeks into the season, he was called up from Utica and made his NHL debut in front of family and friends at Rogers Arena in a 3-0 loss to the Ottawa Senators.

His first NHL goal would come in his seventh game, a 5-4 overtime win over the Dallas Stars.

Remarkably, he is logging over 21 minutes of ice time a game, ranking

third on the team.

Stecher is doing what he has accomplished at every level of hockey.

It started with leading Richmond Minor to the Bantam A1 provincial final, earning team MVP honours in his lone season of Major Midget, then launching an outstanding junior career in Penticton when he was just 16. The success continued at North Dakota where he earned a full-ride scholarship and now the impressive transition to the NHL. “Winning becomes addictive; winning just feels special; I always want to win,” said Stecher.

Seafair Atom C1 Sting come up with big tournament triumph in Chilliwack

t was a big weekend in the Fraser Valley for the Seafair Sting Atom C1 hockey team.

The Sting skated to victory at Chilliwack Minor Hockey’s 36th annual Atom Tournament. The locals earned a spot in the championship game thanks to a unbeaten 2-0-1 record and earning maximum sportsmanship points.

That set the stage for a thrilling final against a strong opponent from the host association. An intense third period had proud parents and supporters on their feet as Seafair came through with a 2-1 triumph.

As the final buzzer sounded, sticks and gloves flew through the air as the team of nine-and-10year-olds celebrated the big victory NHL style.

The Sting’s roster includes:Kai Akizuki, Daniel Bakker, Nathan Brown, Dylan Dholliwar, Bobby Feltham , Patrick Higgs-Torres, Kaden Hodder, Cole Kutny, Baz Lacoumentas , Jovan Sanghera, Ashton Warkentin, Carson Webb, Daniel Zheng, Brant Cao, Jaidev Nair and Josh Sharma.

The team’s coaching staff includes Jonn Lacoumentas and assistants Kevin Kutny, Casey Akizuki and Chris Hodder.
