s I step into the City Centre area this weekend, I’ll no doubt run into reminders that it’s Chinese New Year. Invariably, I’ll also be part of, or bear witness to, a number of local residents struggling to communicate with one another.

And so, it’s heartening to read about a group of Chinese seniors who have taken it upon themselves to learn English at Richmond Chinese Community Society with volunteer teachers. (See page 19.)

There are good arguments on all sides as to where we stand as a “community” and what a common language means for us.

Are we divided? Do our differences make us stronger? How connected are we, really?

I’ve lived here most of my life and admittedly struggle to find definitive answers. Or, maybe not struggle so much as continuously reassess the ever-dynamic situation.

There can be a lot of finger-pointing as to how someone can come here and not speak English for 20 years. A likely culprit is our governments, for either not ensuring someone can speak English before arriving, or not providing adequate programs to learn the language, once settled. But, obviously, personal responsibility also plays a role.

For two years, I was like those seniors at RCCS learning English — only, I was in Korea, learning Korean.

I could have holed up in my Englishspeaking circle of friends; that was the easiest thing to do. Instead, I turned to friends and books to begin learning my neighbour’s language.

Eventually I could count, read a menu, take a taxi with broken words. For personal reasons, my wife and I returned to Canada before I reached proficiency. Even so, just trying to speak Korean allowed me far more positive interactions with Korean residents.

And because my aim was connection, I was also always grateful to the natives who said “hello” to me.

It was in that spirit of fostering communication that I took a beginner’s Mandarin class, last year, through the Richmond School District’s Continuing Education program (online at CE.SD38.BC.ca).

It was fun and trying to learn the pinyin system was a challenge.

I was struck at how many different kinds of people took the class and their reasons: A young man from Hong Kong, who spoke Cantonese, liked Chinese TV shows, which were in Mandarin; an older German man wanted to travel to China; and a woman working in hospitality wanted to make her guests feel welcomed. But for all of them, the overriding objective was to get to know their new neighbour, just as I’m sure that neighbour wants to get to know them too.

Who you callin' lazy?

Dear Editor, Re: “Get with it, millennial,” Letters, Jan. 20 I felt the need to respond to Ms. MacDonald’s condescending letter.

You imply that millennials are lazy kids who don’t want to work and have everything handed to them. I believe you need to actually look at the numbers, Ms. MacDonald, and you will understand why so many young people can’t afford to buy a place to live in.

Did you know that in 2014 the average income of a two-parent, working family was $81,700/ year, which would be $57,190/ year after 30 per cent taxes, or $4,765/month.

Now, let’s break down the cost of living for a family of two working adults with one toddler and one school age child.

The average price of a twobedroom apartment in the Lower Mainland is $1,812/ month. Now we need to feed this four-person family, so let’s say they spend $300/month on food.

The average cost of full-time childcare for a toddler age child is $861/month and for a school age child is $497/month. So,

for full-time childcare for these two children (because both parents are working full time) it’s $1,358/month.

These two parents want to give their children the best chance in life for an education so they save the basic $2,500/ year for each child in an RESP so that breaks down to a cost of $420/month in the RESP. The parents also need to pay off their own student loans which we say is $200/month (very low for two educated adults).

Since these two parents can’t work from home they need a bus pass each. So let’s put aside $248/month for two bus passes that cover two zones.

The school age child would also need a bus pass which is $54/ month.

Adding up all the numbers the cost for this four-person family comes to $4,392/mo. That is not including utilities, as well as cable, phone, clothing, presents etc.

So, if we take our numbers, this family of four is left with $372/month to put in savings (we didn’t put anything in RRSP, Tax Free Savings account or even emergency

funds.)

What if this family wants to buy a house? The average house price in the Vancouver area is $1,400,000. Instead, lets say this family settles on a place to live that they can buy for the bargain price of $500,000. But to buy that house this family must come up with five per cent down payment, which equals to $25,000.

Now since this family only has $373 leftover per month how about we put $350 aside each month to save up for that down payment. It’s only going to take that family six years to come up with a $25,000 down payment.

And once they have that down payment their mortgage only costs them $2,394/month at 3.59 per cent interest (rate on a seven-year fixed mortgage).

So please, Ms. MacDonald, explain to me how the lazy millenials just need to suck it up and “get with it.” Maybe if you are having such a problem with your increased tax costs you should sell your house and downsize into the very same two-bedroom apartment in which that family of four is living.

Tunnel not about transit Dear Editor, Five years into the bridge discussion and personal preferences, not facts, still seem to rule opinions.

The issue of the bridge is not one of transit/transportation. Yes, access over the Fraser needs to be improved.

There is no question that the tunnel is inadequate. However, the Massey Tunnel has had an unequaled safety record during its lifespan. The only safety concerns are government spin.

That and the ‘dilapidated’ appearance of the tunnel are meant to convince us the tunnel is not safe.

What we need to understand is the hidden agenda with the bridge. This agenda has nothing to do with transit infrastructure.

The bridge is an excuse to remove the Massey Tunnel. The tunnel is the only obstacle stopping the Port from dredging the Fraser River. Once dredged, the intent is to make the Fraser Surrey Docks a deep sea port to handle more trade with China.

The bridge is a vanity project for the federal government and the Port of Vancouver, not just Christy Clark. There is a reason our member of parliament is quiet on the subject of an environmental review. There are international interests at stake. If the Province can sell the idea of the bridge, the Port hopes to slip the planned harbour in without the appropriate studies or planning affecting traffic or the Fraser Delta

and Estuary.

The result of this is an incredibly poorly planned and expensive piece of traffic infrastructure that does not serve Greater Vancouver.

Yes there is growth south of the Fraser and this needs to be addressed. A 10-lane bridge will increase this growth exponentially causing ‘urban sprawl’.

Urban sprawl is the most expensive type of municipal area and growth to service.

The “Pacific Gateway” plan is the federal initiative driving this bridge. B.C. taxpayers will end up paying for it. We will pay for its construction, we will pay for crossing it and Delta taxpayers will end up paying for the urban sprawl it generates.

It’s our responsibility to inform ourselves. All three levels of government are being less than truthful on this issue.

Charity is great, but where’s government?

Refusing to fund kids costs us all in the end

Dear Editor, Re: “Variety is the spice of life,” Feature, Jan. 20; “Love of variety makes it doable,” Column, Jan. 20.

Alan Campbell wrote a wonderful feature on Sharon Chan and the many challenges she faces with her three special needs children who suffer from ADHD, autism, and non-speaking and anxiety disorders. It is comforting to note how the Variety Club has stepped in to help with the expenses that Chan faces with needed therapies. Chan is quoted saying that Variety “has given us a light in the dark.”

What is disgraceful is that Christie Clark’s Liberal government removed some of the light and made it darker.

In her Voices column, News editor Eve Edmonds wrote there have been no increases in services for children with development disabilities in the past 10 years. But, of course, our provincial politicians have made sure they have generously indexed their own

If families that have a child with a disability can’t access child care, parents can’t work. This affects not just the household income but our economy. R.S.C.L. regularly hears from parents who are un-employed or under-employed in order to care for their child(ren). Making ends meet in one the most expensive cities to live can pose a real hardship for families who are already dealing with challenges. At the same time, employers report a shortage of qualified staff, which negatively affects our economy

the developers and the real estate industry, who finance the Liberal Party and determine government policy. Not the mother with disabled children. If this isn’t arrogance and callousness, I don’t know what is.

Not only does this present the possibility for challenges for the child to successfully integrate into the classroom, but the end result is that the child needs increased supports that cost the school district and the Ministry of Education.

This funding issue affects more than the families who are wait-listed. It affects the economy, the classroom and our communities. We are very lucky to have private funders like Variety who work so hard to meet the needs of children when government funds are not available. But we need to hold our government to account for why they have not invested in children with special needs for more than a decade.

The Community Connection With Your Richmond MLAs GOOD NEWS FOR RICHMOND HOME OWNERS If you did a double-take earlier this month when you opened your 2017 property assessment notice, you’re not alone.

According to BC Assessment, owners of single-family homes in Richmond could expect assessment increases of 30 to 50 percent, while owners of strata properties could expect increases between 15 and 30 percent.

In recognition of these increases, our government has increased the threshold of the Home Owner Grant to $1.6 million, up from the 2016 threshold of $1.2 million.

This program is one way the Province helps BC residents with the cost of home ownership. The basic grant can reduce residential property taxes on your principal residence by up to $570. Seniors 65 and older, people with disabilities, and certain veterans or their spouses may qualify for an additional grant to reduce their taxes by up to $845. You can also consider applying for a property tax deferment program to help offset your costs.

Our provincial government believes in keeping taxes low across the board for BC families. Of course, municipalities have an important role to play to keep property taxes at a manageable level. But we’re committed to doing our part, too, to ensure that families who have seen their home values jump aren’t faced with unmanageable property tax bills.

First, the officer observes a smell for 10 minutes. Next they follow the odour back to the facility and ensure it is getting stronger as they approach. Then, they ensure there are no other sources of odour.

Officers may track a smell at two different locations to qualify a violation, said Robb.

But often, especially with changing wind patterns, officers lose the scent (determined by their trained noses).

On Jan. 18, Robb said officers came close to shutting the facility down, if it were not for swirling winds.

“The wind is usually blowing from the northeast, so it ends up in Steveston,” said Robb.

“We have observed less odours than we did in August and September,” said Robb.

Harvest Power maintains it is working on facility improvements.

That’s not good enough, however, for Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

“There have been numerous times, as recently as last night and this morning, that I could detect a strong odour,” said Brodie.

But Shuchat’s group has expressed much frustration over Brodie’s handling of the situation. Specifically, Shuchat questions how the City of Richmond’s contract with Harvest Power can be held in secret for business purposes given the pollution that is occurring.

Resident Don Flintoff filed a request for the contract, which was redacted in many parts.

Brodie maintained there are legal reasons for not revealing the entire contract.

he federal government has chipped in $500,000 towards the $2.1 million renovation of South Arm Community Centre.

Joe Peschisolido, MP for Steveston-Richmond East, made an appearance at the community centre on Tuesday to hand over the cheque as part of the government’s CIP 150 investment program.

The funding will go towards replacement of the roof and mechanical systems in order to improve energy efficiency. The project will also include upgrading the fitness centre, the walls, doors, window and floors.

The City of Richmond will contribute $1.15 million to the project, with the South Arm Community Association kicking in a further $500,000. The proposed completion date is this fall.

n the heels of launching the city’s Canada 150 celebrations, Mayor Malcolm Brodie began his annual address Thursday with a sweeping history of Richmond, noting the early contributions of Japanese, Chinese and First Nations people.

“The cultural diversity we reflect today was actually established in the late 1800s,” Brodie told the sold-out audience of business leaders at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel luncheon, hosted by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce.

In addressing one of Richmond’s most urgent current is-

sues, Brodie maintained that the city’s primary means of addressing housing affordability is to increase housing supply.

Brodie said the city took in about $715 million in new building permit values, in 2016, the third highest of any year (2015 was the record with $1 billion). Growth will continue, noted Brodie, with master plans being developed to densify both Richmond Centre and Lansdowne Centre malls.

He cited how development has provided for the many new amenities that have graced the city.

For example, he noted the new 133-unit Polygon townhouse complex at the old Steveston High site provided 12 rent-controlled units for low-income residents and dedicated nearly six acres of parkland to the city. Brodie noted the near completion of Storeys, a 129-unit subsidized housing project on Granville Avenue that will house social service

He also noted the near completion of the 110,000 squarefoot Minoru Complex, soon to be home of both an expanded aquatics centre and seniors centre.

It was another civic (quasi-civic) facility that Brodie spoke highly of at the top of his address — one that he said has been a “catalyst for the creation of a new urban waterfront

community” that has also “encouraged expansion of our tourism industry.”

Brodie said the facility, the Richmond Olympic Oval, “continues to be a prominent asset,” one that is becoming known as a “world-class” competition centre.

He also noted that the Oval area is now connected to a city-owned geothermal utility — Oval Village District Energy.

This and many new LEED-certified buildings and improved cycling paths are among the city’s environmental initiatives, he noted.

“With such a strong emphasis on environmental issues, Richmond City Council has voiced many concerns over the provincial government’s plans to replace the George Massey Tunnel,” said Brodie.

Brodie did not address the issue of land speculation and the concern that many residential homes are standing empty. However, he did acknowledged residents’ concerns about the odour coming from the Harvest Power recycling plant and said the city will continue to press the plant to make changes, so as not to negatively impact residents’ quality of life.

Brodie said 2017 will mark a year of celebrations for Canada 150, highlighted by a special tall ships festival and a two-day Richmond World Festival.

Peschisolido: Feds play no official role From page 6

The city has begun diverting organic waste from multi-family units, to a compost facility in Delta, noted Brodie. However, Richmond only contributes about eight per cent of the total amount of waste bound for Harvest Power.

Meanwhile, Brodie has called on the federal Port of Vancouver to exert pressure on Harvest Power, as it is the landlord.

He wants the port to “exercise any remedies they have under their lease” to Harvest Power.

The company, for its part, is calling for the provincial Environmental Appeal Board to terminate the air quality permit (issued by Metro Vancouver) based on the argument that their operation is regulated federally.

“We operate on federal land and that raises certain complicated issues of which rules apply,” stated Harvest Power spokesperson Stephen Bruyneel.

Steveston-Richmond East MP Joe Peschisolido was expected to run a town hall meeting Thursday night on the matter.

“We are not a direct decision maker on the regulatory side.

There’s no official role for the Government of Canada to play,” said Peschisolido Thursday morning.

However there is a federal role “to be helpful to resolve” the issue, said Peschisolido.

Cannery on lookout for fishy stories

T

he Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society is putting together a team of volunteers to capture the stories of Canada’s West Coast fishing industry.

With support from the federal government’s Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program, the Steveston-based society is recruiting and training a team of volunteer interviewers to speak to seniors who fished commercially, worked in a cannery, or otherwise played a role in the fishing industry.

These interviews will be digitally recorded and made available to the public through a new online database.

“We are very pleased to be able to connect with people who have contributed to one of Canada’s most significant industries,” said Rebecca Clarke, the society’s executive director.

“The fishing industry has changed so much and it’s important to save the stories of the men and women who spent years of their life working in it.

“We want to make sure their stories are available for future generations to understand what it was like.”

Steveston-Richmond East MP Joe Peschisolido said the society’s “timely oral history project will help preserve for generations to come, the memories and stories of people who worked in the west coast fishing industry.”

he City of Richmond had a record breaking year in 2016 for both the number of filming days and the amount of revenue generated.

Production of major motion pictures, War for the Planet of the Apes and Power Rangers, along with the continued success of ABC’s popular series Once Upon A Time helped ensure that Richmond will continue to be featured on both the small and big screens in 2017.

“The film industry provides good, well-paying jobs for local people, boosts economic activity within the community and even brings more tourists to Richmond,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

“The Richmond Film Office has worked closely with local residents and businesses to establish our reputation as a film-friendly community and we are seeing the results of that collaborative approach.”

The Richmond Film Office presented its annual report this week to city council’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Committee.

In all, eight feature films,

Filming took place in the city three out of every four days last year, for a total of 276 filming days — compared the previous record of 189.

Productions, according to the city, are attracted to Richmond by a diverse inventory of attractive filming locations, the one-stop Richmond Film Office and

the film-friendly community environment.

In addition to direct spending from filming in Richmond, the industry is also a major employer in the city with over $24 million dollars in wages earned by residents employed in 2015 (which was the last year of available data).

Film tourism continued in 2016 with Tourism Richmond reporting an 8.9 per cent increase in visits to its Steveston Visitor’s Centre and noting that 64 per cent of visitors were there because of Once Upon a Time.

anuary 28th marks the beginning of Chinese New Year and the Year of the Fire Rooster.

T

he windows were steamed up; due, in part, to the rain hammering off the glass and also down to the excited breaths filling the air as people began to pack into a small meeting room on the second floor of a City Centre strip mall.

Animated conversations bounced off the walls and the members’ beaming smiles were outshone only by the proliferation of reds and golds scattered liberally around the room at the Richmond Chinese Community Society’s (RCCS) Chinese New Year celebration.

While some RCCS volunteers enthusiastically welcomed more guests – most of them Chinese immigrant seniors – others fussed over the bobbles on the God of Fortune’s headdress, as he prepared to bestow mini golden roosters on all in attendance.

Three empty chairs sat apart from the crowd at the front of the room, waiting to be filled by a trio of protagonists (RCCS members), who were set to entertain the audience with a skit about a lonely, fresh-off-the-plane Chinese immigrant woman.

“She has no friends, she is depressed and she wants to go home because of the language barrier,” RCCS executive director Henry Beh said of the plot for the 10-minute play.

“But she found RCCS and she begins to meet so many new friends, she gets to exercise in classes and takes part in birthday parties.”

The star of the “show” may be fictional, but she’s very much based on the experience lived by so many newcomers to Canada from China and is the very reason RCCS members, such as David Ma and Teresita Cheung, volunteer their time at the society.

“I’ve been coming here for about eight years, mostly to help new immigrants from China; most of whom can be lonely and don’t have too many friends,” said Ma, 76, who emigrated from Hong Kong more than 50 years ago.

“When I came here, I knew very few people and didn’t know

where to go. There was no Chinese community in Richmond; it was mostly farmland; I had to go to Chinatown in Downtown Vancouver.

“Helping in such a way can be very healthy and keeps me strong, as well. I get lots of happiness and when we know more people, health and happiness comes with it. It makes sense.”

Cheung, 60, who came to Canada with her son and parents more than 23 years ago, also from Hong Kong, said she joined RCCS to expedite her learning of English.

“And to meet new people and, hopefully, make new friends,” she said.

“I brought my parents here and it helped them so much. It brings a smile to their faces and to mine; you can’t underestimate how much having something like this helps everyone.”

Both Ma and Cheung are planning to celebrate Chinese New Year’s Eve next Friday, Jan. 27, with big family get togethers.

“We will do something very traditional; it’s very important for the family to be together on Chinese New Year, very important,” said Ma. “We must have chicken and we will have pot fish soup, oysters, fat choy and Chinese preserved meats, such as sausage

and duck.”

With a big grin, Ma added that he was “very excited this year; but I usually am.”

Where Ma is a “dragon,” Cheung is a “rooster” and, with it being the Year of the Rooster on the Chinese horoscope, she’s hoping for some extra good luck.

What they do have in common, however, is youthful looks, given their years.

“It’s the clean air and cleaner water that makes us look younger,” Ma said, laughing.

“And being happy for a lot of the time, that must make a big difference,” said Cheung.

The 28-year-old non-profit RCCS — which, in part, exists to “assist in the process of integration and assimilation of Chinese-Canadians into mainstream society” — now has more than 1,000 members, said Beh, adding that “70 per cent are seniors and many are volunteers.”

RCCS provides a variety of services and programs to the community, such as fitness dance, ballroom dance, Tai Chi and Yuanji classes, karaoke, yoga, Chinese brush painting, calligraphy and belly dance.

With their books wide open and their chins up, the dozen or so Chinese students – most of whom are seniors – echo their volunteer instructor with their best conversational English during their weekly class.

And if they ever do catch sight of a fox witnessing a crow taking flight with a piece of cheddar in his mouth, the eager participants of the Richmond Chinese Community Society’s (RCCS) English Corner program will know exactly how to express themselves.

The informal, Monday morning class offering conversational English has been running for four years and is so popular that the society has an almost continuous waiting list.

As the instructor read out a new word, the students repeated it back before their teacher gave a more detailed definition; which was frequently greeted with a collective “oh” from his students.

Hong Kong native John Chow, who has

been going to English Corner for two years, spent the vast majority of the first 18 of his 20 years in Canada conversing in Chinese.

“When I retired, I wanted to really help the community; but I realized that, to do that properly, I would have to improve my English,” said Chow.

“I used to work in the seafood department at TNT supermarket; now I volunteer

in the East Cambie community.

“I feel much better, now that I can communicate in English.”

His fellow classmate, Julita Chan, has also been coming to the class for two years, after emigrating from Hong Kong in 2011.

Chan wanted to improve her listening skills and wanted to be able to read Eng-

lish, as well as make more friends.

“Now, when I go to the department store, for example, I can communicate properly with the staff,” she smiled.

Joanna Kato, from Taiwan, had also been living in Canada for 18 years and getting by daily in Chinese, before her children urged her to learn English.

“At their school, we were always communicating with the teachers in English and it was difficult for me,” said Kato.

“I could manage, but I wanted to express myself properly to them, so I decided to come here.”

As well as learning new words and putting them into context in sentences, the students, which can number up to 25, sing songs in English and then have lunch together, where the conversation switches between Mandarin and Cantonese.

“We understand most of what we’re all talking about,” laughed Chan of the lunch.

“But it’s great being able to sing the national anthem without having to look at the lyrics.”

Private vs. independent: What’s the difference?

Though often confused, independent schools and private schools are two distinct alternatives to public education.

Both address the needs of students who desire something different than what public education offers. However, there is a key difference between what institutions are designated private or independent. This distinction lies in their structure and their acquisition of funding.

Private schools are generally understood to be for-profit organizations established and controlled by one or more persons.

Independent most often signifies a not-forprofit school that is accountable to a board of trustees, which operates at arm’s length from the administration. As well, schools referred to as independent often point to their accreditation by a peer review.

Five provinces where independent schools receive public funding require that they be recognized as accredited by a government body. But in Ontario, for example, independent schools share no across-the-board accreditation. Most independent schools are affiliated with associations that demand specific standards of their members.

According to recent statistics, around 119,000 students in Ontario alone attend independent schools and about 349,000 students across Canada. Some of these schools have even been around since the early 1800’s.

Independent school attendance in B.C. doubles national average Education in public schools remains the dominant form of education in Canada, though given the findings of a recent study, that’s changing. “The data indicates,” writes Deani van Pelt, “parents are increasingly looking to independent schools for more choice in how their children are educated.”

Van Pelt is director of the Fraser Institute’s Barbara Mitchell Centre for Improvement in Education. She is also co-author of A Diverse Landscape: Independent Schools in Canada, published by the institute this past June. The study is the first of its kind in Canada, and provides what is by far the

most comprehensive portrait of independent schooling in this country to date.

And there are some surprises. What first catches a reader’s attention is the number of students that attend independent school, totaling 6.8 percent of the national K to 12 student population. There’s a higher percentage in some provinces — B.C.’s numbers are double that of the national average — though in all enrollment continues to rise. “A greater number of parents,” writes Van Pelt, “[are] choosing to have their children educated outside of the public school system.”

hey couldn’t get their collective minds around the concept of burying their heads in their books at night without having any proper light.

And when they learned that impoverished African kids were getting injured while using gasoline to produce light for a few minutes of studying, a group of Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) business students knew they had to make a difference.

That’s why the seven-strong team — who are studying for a degree in business administration at KPU’s Richmond and Surrey campuses — decided to run the business component of their practicum in aid of the African students.

After launching their website, Shaseux. com, this week, the group will, until March 22, manufacture, market and sell hand-crafted soy candles and coconut oil bath bombs to raise money for non-profit SolarAid, which provides solar power and solar lamps to rural, off-the-grid communities in African nations.

According to one of the students, Ashley Leitao, for every 500 ml candle they sell, a family will have light for their home for a month.

“We thought to ourselves, ‘what could we do that means something to us?’ said Leitao.

“As we were brainstorming, we thought of SolarAid; we couldn’t imagine not being able to study because we had no light.

“We’ve heard of stories of kids in Afri-

can countries using gasoline for fuel in kerosene lamps. It’s very dangerous and they’re getting seriously burned, just while trying to study.”

Not content, however, with lighting a family’s home for month, Leitao and her fellow “business partners” have pledged to also donate to SolarAid their wages, which have to be costed into their final profit/loss accounts.

“We wanted to do more than a month of light,” added Leitao.

“We’re going to be able to get way more lamps to way more families this way.

We’re not entirely sure what other groups (on the course) are doing, but we want to do the right thing across all bases.”

Students feel need for speed Alan Campbell

ith speeds clocking in at an incredible 157 kilometres per hour, it’s no wonder around 650 students and teachers crammed into Anderson elementary’s gymnasium.

The annual Co2 Dragster Races were hosted by the school’s Grade 7 Division 1 students last week.

And in the 17 years the school has been running the event — which is the culmination of the students’ Applied Skills, Design, and Technology program — no one has managed to record 157 km/h, which was reached during race rehearsals, with 135 km/h hit during the actual races.

“Our races were one of the coolest events I have ever seen in my career,” said Grade 7 teacher Glyn Davies. “(It’s) so incredible what can be done by kids.”

In the words of one of the students, Mamie, the race was at the end of a “long and exciting process of creating the balsa wood dragster cars.”

“To begin this process, we started off with generating ideas and drawings using our creative imagination.

“We drew the outline of our dragster on the wood, which was soon cut out.”

After sanding their designs and then priming and painting them, wheels, axles and licence plates were added to the cars.

During the race itself, there is no shortage of help, with a pit crew, mechanics, announcers and even security.

“The assembly is forever more one of the greatest assemblies in the history of Anderson school,” added Cierra, another Grade 7 student.

The Christmas holidays always seem to come and go quickly, and are now firmly in our rear-view mirrors. So now, we get to deal with tax credits!

It may not have the same ring to it, but since so many people are caregivers, or are otherwise not necessarily aware of tax “breaks” or credits they may be entitled to, it is useful to review them, since we are not far from April.

Caregiver Tax Credit

How important are relationships – let me count the ways!

It appears from the literature that not many Canadians are aware of this tax credit. Of course there are qualifications, and there has to be a doctor involved. Here it is:

I

wrote a letter to city hall a few months ago to bring awareness to some dangerous intersections and stretches of road in Richmond with regards to cyclists. I’d like to add the first new addition to that list for 2017.

City hall, are you listening?

The city says it’s doing everything it can to make the roads safe for cyclists, but after what I saw today, I find that hard to believe.

I’m talking about the pathetic patch job done along Sidaway Road, north of Blundell Road.

First, this not only affects cyclists. It affects all motorists, too. It’s absolutely disgraceful, and I invite everyone to go and look at this section of road on their own. Take pictures, take videos, send them to the mayor and councillors, and ask them, “How is this acceptable use of our tax money?”

Sidaway Road is a major artery for cyclists and motorists. It connects from Steveston Highway all the way to major cycling routes like Westminster Highway, and motorists use this as a quick connect across Richmond.

Over the last few years, riding north on Sidaway, just north of the Vancouver Gun Club, the road was breaking apart and sliding into the ditch. Having to ride out in the

lane because of poor roads, and motorists not knowing why you are doing this, is always asking for honking horns, loud words, and rude gestures. However, last summer I was happy to see the spray paint markings from the city, showing it would finally be repaving that stretch of road.

So how did it turn out?

I’m not going to hold back. I challenge everyone to find a single, worse piece of blacktop in all of Richmond. I’ve seen back alleys from the 1950’s that are still smoother than this.

It’s unacceptable to think my tax money was used for this “repair.” The blacktop is uneven, it doesn’t even line up with the road it’s attached to. There are bumps, dips, cracks and, to top it off, the biggest, deepest pothole in all of Richmond.

It is, frankly, unrideable.

Not only does it force cyclists to ride down the middle of the lane now, but cars, also in order to avoid what I’d say would be severe tire or wheel damage on a regular sized car, need to veer out to the centre line or over. A bike wheel? Not a chance of surviving.

So, to the person blasting their horn at a group of cyclists on that stretch of road the other day, your anger is misdirected. You should be blasting your horn at city hall.

he McMath Wildcats dodged a bullet Monday night and it will the McNair Marlins’ turn next.

That bullet is the MacNeill Ravens — a fiesty and hard-working team that is trying to nail down a spot into next month’s Lower Mainland “AAA” Boys Basketball Championships.

The Wildcats have been joined

by Steveston-London, McNair and Richmond High in the provincial “AAA” rankings for much of the season. They are considered the favourites to earn just the four Mainland berths available to Richmond teams this season but it would be ill-advised to look past the Ravens.

The decision to make league games determine Mainland seedings this season has certainly created a dynamic twist with only head-to-head games among the “AAA” tier teams counting.

It was a playoff atmosphere Monday night at MacNeill as the Wildcats (3-1)

held off the Ravens (2-1) for a 71-63 victory to lock up their Mainland berth.

MacNeill can still advance with a win at home over the Marlins on Monday night (7 p.m.). They already toppled the Colts (3-2) 83-72 back on Dec. 5.

“MacNeill is a good solid team. They are gritty and work hard. That’s all you can really ask from the kids,” said a relieved McMath head coach Tony Wong-Hen who saw his team nearly squander a 17-point third quarter lead.

“Richmond is so tight which makes it so good this year. It’s not great as a coach because it makes you nervous all the time but it it is so good for Richmond basketball.”

The Ravens do have talent to compliment their work ethic, led by the impressive Grade 12 guard duo of Josh Ignacio and Justin Dy-Pe, who combined for 38 points.

The hosts pulled within 58-55 with 7:49 remaining, before going nearly nearly five minutes without scoring — allowing McMath to regain some breathing room. The Wildcats needed

all 15 points from 6-foot-7 Grade 9 call-up Victor Radocaj.

The Ravens were generating some good looks but the shots weren’t falling.

“We thought we had it a that point,” said head coach Landon Dy of the early fourth quarter surge. “We were just missing our shots.

“We don’t have the height but we never do. Without that you have to go fast and you got to shoot three balls.

That’s the tempo we want to play.

We just need to replicate what we did tonight and hit a few more shots. We told the guys tonight if they win they are in the Lower Mainlands. We still have another shot at it.”

Dy says he is pulling out all the stops for Monday’s game — calling-up Grade 8 standout Jackson Tackwray.

He describes the DRIVE academy product as the most promising player in the school’s history.

Tackwray leads a Bantam team that is unbeaten (7-0) in city play. MacNeill also has winning records at the junior (5-1) and juvenile levels (4-2) as well.

Deadline for Richmond Sports Awards is Tuesday Nominations for the 18th annual Richmond Sports Awards are being accepted up until Tuesday, Jan. 31.

The Richmond Sports Awards Committee is looking for nominations in several categories, recognizing athletic, coaching, officiating and administrative achievements during the 2016 calendar year.

The categories include: Youth Female (U18), Youth Make (U18), High

School Female, High School Male, Junior Female (18-20), Junior Male (18-2), Post Secondary Female, Post Secondary Male, Adult Male, Adult Female, Senior Female ( 55 and over), Senior Male (55 and over), Special Olympics, Athlete with a Disability, Female Youth Team (U19), Male Youth Team (U19), Mixed Youth Team (U19), Adult Team, Coach, Official and Administrator.

The nominator should attempt to paint a complete picture of the candidate, as the committee

will be relying solely on this information to base their decision.

Nominations are available by visiting the Richmond Sports Council website: www.richmondsportscouncil.com.

Submissions must include a high-resolution headshot or action shot of the nominee.

The winners will be announced at the Richmond Sports Awards banquet, Thursday, April 27 at RA McMath Secondary.

Rockets speed skaters thrive on long track too

R

ichmond Rockets speed skaters had an impressive showing at last weekend’s B.C. Long Track Championships in Dawson Creek.

Despite the fact that the Rockets train only in short track at the Richmond Olympic Oval, all four skaters finished top five in their respective provincial age-class.

Lan-Vi Nguyen and Heather Stewart have also qualified for the upcoming Canadian Age-Class Long Track Championships (CACLT) in Edmonton.

A year ago, Stewart was the sole Richmond skater to compete on the 400-metre oval at provincials. She went on to attend nationals in Quebec City.

This time, Lan-Vi Nguyen, Giang-Vi Nguyen and Nam Nguyen joined Stewart in this

distinct speed skating discipline which was featured in Richmond at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

At her first Long Track competition, Lan-Vi Nguyen finished second in the 12-year-old age class despite being up against more experienced competitors from northern B.C. clubs. She skated personal best (PB) times in the 300-meter & 3000-meter Mass Start events and the 500-meter Olympic Style.

It was a tough competition for GiangVi Nguyen who skated in a large pool of 13-year-old girls. She recorded (PB) times in the 300-meter Mass Start, 3000-meter Olympic Style and 500-meter Olympic Style.

In the 14-year old class, Stewart returned for her 2nd BCLT championships to an age class highly dominated by the Fort St-John

girls that boosted the reigning Canadian Champion.

Stewart, a member of the Provincial Performance Program in Long Track, made numerous trips to Fort St-John and Prince George to complement her training. Her commitment paid off with a spot to the CACLT and PBs in the 500-meter and the 3000-meter Olympic Style.

She also teamed up with Giang-Vi Nguyen and Sofia Paredes-Heideman of Vancouver

in the 2000-meter Team Pursuit event where they placed third.

Nam Nguyen skated with the Masters and brought back the silver medal. He experienced the demanding Long Track distances of the 500m, 1000m, 1500m and 3000m Olympic Style. He also skated PBs in all of his distances. As a Master athlete he is not eligible to attend the CACLT, but will be cheering on his daughter Lan-Vi and Stewart in Edmonton.
