I

have two wonderful children and love being a mom, but the fact is, parenting can be brutal.

You start with all these great plans, knowing just what kind of child you’ll have, how you’ll nurture all the qualities you value, how you won’t make the ridiculous mistakes you can so clearly see your friends making.

And then you have the kid.

It doesn’t take long to realize said kid has other plans. Almost immediately, at least in my case, a willful and unique personality was letting me know he was going to be himself — thank you very much — not my fantasy child.

My daughter was no different.

But, of course, that’s the brilliance of it all.

In fact, the greatest thing parenting can teach us, apart from profound love, is that we’re not the boss of life. Rather, we’ve entered a new universe where preconceived notions crash into reality and the best we can do is look, learn and love the one-of-a-kind individual who’s now the centre of our world.

I think of this as I read our story in today’s paper about the Chan family. When Sharon Chan and her husband set out to have a family, I doubt three special needs children, one not even verbal, is what they envisioned.

Yet, mom laughs as she says, “every day is different” and describes her house as “entertaining.” I suspect her remarkable resilience comes in large part from cherishing each one of her kids for who they are, even as they veer from the script.

The impetus for this story is to illustrate Variety — The Children’s Charity’s good work ahead of its big fundraiser. Thanks to Variety, the Chan children have received speech, as well as feeding, therapy. The daughter, who was getting dangerously thin, has learned how to eat, and the youngest son, who could barely talk, is now striking up conversations.

It’s great this family has been helped, but I’m also thinking of the story we ran two weeks ago in which Janice Barr, the executive director of Richmond’s Society for Community Living, said 175 Richmond families cannot send their children to pre-school or daycare because their children need extra support and there’s no funding to provide it.

We know what early intervention can do.

Chan’s kids are living proof. So, it’s hard to understand why we’re letting so many others languish without it — but we are. According to Barr, there’s been no increases in services for children with developmental disabilities in the past 10 years. Which brings me to the upcoming provincial election — a time when purse strings tend to loosen.

If we truly believe in variety, if we truly believe every child has the right to reach his/ her potential then, for sure, let’s support the Variety telethon, but 10 years is a long time.

That needs to change.

Taxi industry needs to get service into gear Dear Editor, It’s not uncommon for people to complain about not being able to get a taxi in the Lower Mainland due to the shortage of cabs. Today, I had a great deal of trouble getting a cab for the opposite reason — there were too many.

After dropping off my car to be serviced, I walked over to the SkyTrain station at Cook and No. 3 roads to get a taxi home. Scattered throughout the strip mall parking lot were about 10 taxis from both Richmond Taxi and Garden City Cabs.

Of all the taxis in the lot, only two of them had drivers seated in them. I walked up to the first taxi and went to get in the car. The doors were locked and, without even rolling down his window, the driver scowled at me and waved me away.

I walked further down the lot to the next cab with a driver and indicated to the driver I wanted to get in. He at least had the courtesy to roll down his window and said I had to take one of the taxis further down the parking lot.

Not one of those cars had a driver in the car and it appeared that all of the drivers were standing around in a group in the middle of the roadway smoking cigarettes. I asked that second driver if I was not permitted to choose the taxi I wanted to take.

He got out of his car and, with much hand waving, started yelling back and forth across the parking lot in a language I didn’t understand to the group of drivers who were standing around.

Then, he just shrugged his shoulders and got back into his cab, waving me away. At that point, I got annoyed and walked away not prepared to hire any of those drivers.

I will not patronize service providers who have no clue about customer service and

treat prospective customers shabbily. I ended up walking across the street, taking a bus most of the way home and walking the rest of the way, despite the pouring rain.

I understand there is a hierarchy for cabs at a taxi stand. However, the strip mall parking lot is not a marked taxi stand and there is no formal line of taxis that would indicate to a customer which taxi is first in line, such as taxi stands in Vancouver or Burnaby.

To make a customer go from taxi to taxi to try and figure out which one is prepared (or allowed) to take a passenger is ridiculous, especially when most of the drivers are not in their cars or even paying attention to what is going on around them. To dictate to a customer which taxi he is permitted to hire is even more ridiculous.

The Brighouse SkyTrain station is a busy transportation hub and taxis are part of that system. The local taxi companies need to get their act together and implement a better and more clearly defined system for people wanting to use their services at that location.

I suspect, however, that it may be difficult to get the strip mall to cooperate, given that the taxis take up a lot of the strip mall’s customer parking with their unofficial taxi stand with little or no benefit to the strip mall businesses.

I’ve always been staunchly opposed to allowing the so-called ride “sharing” services to operate in our city without the same oversight, insurance and driver training that taxi companies are required to adhere to.

I’m beginning to have a change of heart.

I think it’s time the taxi industry received a long-overdue wake up call.

The greatest risk to women: living long Earlier this week, an article in the New York Daily News discussed the trouble that many women are experiencing across the U.S. (and probably in Canada also). As the statistics tell us, life expectancy is high for women (85 here in B.C.), but financially, many women do not have sufficient resources to fund a lifestyle.

The writer states that far too many women do not have pensions, and even more have not made (or never made) any retirement plans, and so are stuck.

Every woman, regardless of her age, should get an idea of the cost of living their retirement, and then put together (with advice) a plan for living it. The writer of the article suggests that women should spend at least as much time planning their retirement as they do planning their next “dream” vacation!

Land speculation an old game Dear Editor, Re: “Mega home is hardly meant for farming in Richmond,” Letters, Dec. 28.

The loss of Richmond agricultural land as outlined in Mr. Baines’ letter is just the tip of the iceberg.

Agricultural land is increasingly bought by non-farming, land speculators who take advantage of slack regulations. It is an old game that now has even more new players.

In 1956, Richmond Municipal Council had a public planning meeting where they explained that the land east of No. 5 Rd. was for farming and the land south of Steveston Highway was for industry and agriculture.

Changes have been made ever since.

Port Metro Vancouver bought the Gilmore Farm for future industry. A common trend near the Fraser River is to see land zoned for industry changed to allow for more con-

dos, including parts of Richmond’s Trites Road. and the north end of No. 4 Road. At the south end of No. 2 Road. more condos are appearing. Pieces of land, both agricultural and industrial have been disappearing like chunks of cheese at a cheese factory Land that is needed for economic growth, jobs and food production is lost to piecemeal residential development.

The City of Richmond should buy agricultural land south of Steveston Highway and lease it out for farming. Growing food would have more long range value than some of the other recent projects propped up by never-ending funds from the city.

Parcels of fertile agricultural land with mega-homes, no crops and low taxes are a joke, if it were not so sad. It is time to get Richmond’s land use under control.

How many new tankers fly Council buried a good idea flags of convenience?

Dear Editor, We live beside a vital waterway crucial to countless B.C. industries, as well as transport and tourism. Because of oil pipeline approvals, it’s said tanker traffic will increase from the present 60 to an estimated 400 tankers. While it is maintained that B.C. needs jobs and means to sustain the economy, irremediable consequences are still a concern.

I have a question. How many if any, of these oil tankers will carry flags-of-

convenience?

I understand ships can bypass their own countries’ stricter regulations for repairs and maintenance by sailing under a laxer country’s flag. If these are the tankers plying our waters, worldclass standards for oil spills may soon be put into effect, while more fortunate countries learn from our unhappy attempts to deal with the damage.

Dear Editor, I attended the planning committee meeting on Jan. 17 where the idea of launching a lengthy public consultation process regarding house sizes in the Agriculture Land Reserve was discussed.

It was pointed out that the time required for this consultation process would enable developers, in the meantime, to submit “mega home” proposals that must be approved under the current bylaws.

Coun. Carol Day suggested immediately passing a new bylaw that would substantially restrict house size by adopting the Ministry of Agriculture guidelines. This bylaw could be modified later based on feedback from the originallyplanned public consultations.

Several farmers made presentations explaining why their extended, multi-generational families working on the farm would require a house larger than the maximum allowed under the Ministry of Agriculture guidelines.

Mayor Malcolm Brodie had the idea that they could

apply for a zoning modification, allowing the larger house.

All of the councilors asked pertinent questions about how the process might work, but I had the impression that the myriad responses tended to bury the two suggestions by Day and Mayor Brodie that could be the essential components of an immediate, meaningful response to the problem.

I hope that council can get it together to put forward a new bylaw at their meeting next Monday.

I read in the papers other day that the detached home values are already down by five per cent since July last year.

Are we property richer or poorer?

Dear Editor, BC Assessment has made us all very rich overnight by increasing our assets values by 42 per cent in a year.

All the analysts and real estate brokers have been saying that the house prices reached last year are not sustainable.

I would like to ask BC Assessment if they have ever assessed property values in the past by an increment of 40 per cent within a year.

If similar increments were seen in other sectors of our economy, the inflation rate would hit the ceiling.

I am wondering if the present practice adopted by BC Assessment of assessing your house values by sales in our neighbourhoods is valid any more when you see some freak sales of values beyond the norm?

ity councillors got their first taste of what is expected to be a controversial round of public consultation on limiting the size of homes on protected agricultural land.

“Let’s be clear. Whatever we do, there will be people that aren’t happy,” said Coun.

Linda McPhail, chair of the planning committee, which accepted a staff report Tuesday evening that sets out draft bylaws that bring Richmond in line with nearby municipalities.

Presently, Richmond does not limit the size of homes, other than allowing for a new home’s livable floor area to be no larger than 60 per cent of the lot size. As a result, mansions as large as 20,000-square-feet or more are being approved by city planners, who have no recourse to deny the building permits on the Agricultural Land Reserve.

“This is what the discussion is about; whether we want to move away from floorarea-ratio . . . The house can grow in size depending on how big the lot is,” explained Joe Erceg, Richmond’s manager of planning and development.

The committee heard from a number of land owners and developers who expressed various concerns.

“Don’t punish everyone because new people are building (large) houses,” said Gurdial Badh, who identified himself as a farmer and owner of 120 acres of blueberry fields.

Badh is also a realtor and recently applied to the city to subdivide a 20-acre parcel of farmland. The application was denied, as, according to the city, it would “result in lots with the potential for large single-family dwellings.”

Randy Shuette, president of Twin City Development Group, told committee he was a long-time resident planning to build a dream home for his family. He argued the value of his recently purchased farm lot in Richmond would be diminished by limiting house sizes.

Schuette said he intends to farm the land with his four children.

One man named Ravinder told committee it was important to allow large homes for the purpose of housing multi-generational families, who have long farmed in Richmond.

Meanwhile, support for limiting the size of houses was also heard by committee.

“This is about soil. Grade A soil,” said Yvonne Bell.

Steveston resident Karin Biggs said she was of the opinion developers have controlled the decision-making on the matter.

“The tail is wagging the dog. The tail is the developers. The dog is you and us,” said Biggs.

Coun. Bill McNulty said the problem has flared up because “people have taken advantage of the goodwill of the city.”

He said some land owners have built big homes in good faith.

Coun. Carol Day said she was concerned about a flood of new building permit applications and called for an expedited bylaw to temporarily limit house sizes, prior to a

planned round of public consultation this March. McPhail said planners are too busy to accommodate this immediately, so she directed staff to expedite the consultation process.

Day called on residents to show up at Monday’s Richmond city council meeting to speak to the bylaw proposals.

In 2010 the city attempted to restrict house sizes but council backed away after opposition from land owners and developers. Since then, an attempt by Metro Vancouver to impose a regional limit was denied in 2011.

Over the past five years, many municipalities have enacted bylaws.

Those municipalities have generally mirrored guidelines from the Ministry of Agriculture, which has made clear to the city, via a letter last October, that powers to regulate the siting, size and location of homes on ALR parcels rests with local government.

Coun. Harold Steves said the city should adopt Delta’s bylaw, which limits homes to 3,552-square-feet on lots smaller than 20 acres.

The city loses tax revenue when the properties are classified as farms, not residential.

And a report by Metro Vancouver has called the existing threshold for farming revenue to access the tax breaks too low.

Snow removal bylaw revisited

R

ichmond city council is to explore a new snow removal bylaw that will include single-family homes, following widespread complaints that residents of such properties failed to clear their adjacent sidewalks, as is requested in the city’s Good Neighbour policy.

Existing bylaws only affect townhouse developments and businesses, who must remove snow and ice from sidewalks before 10 a.m. each day.

The move to address single-family homes comes after a three-week spell of cold weather and some snow in Richmond.

Townsend said the city had issued 180 notices to property owners. By comparison, in Vancouver — where it snowed more and much of it stayed on the ground for long periods of time — city officials issued 1,700 warnings and took court action against 36 properties.

“We always try to address these issues with education and voluntary compliance first and that works in the vast majority of incidents,” said Townsend.

Coun. Linda McPhail said via Twitter that one of the aspects staff will address in a proposed bylaw is how properties without sidewalks should be cleared by residents.

Canada Line trains increase capacity

UPDATE - YVR SOUTH RUNWAY CLOSURES

C

anada Line users should see improved service during the morning and evening rush hours next week, after TransLink announced it will be adding two new two-car trains to the tracks.

This brings the total number of trains in service during rush hour to 18, for an 11 per cent increase in capacity.

From 6:30-9 a.m. and 3-7 p.m., trains will depart from Brighouse and YVR-Airport stations every six minutes instead of every six minutes and 40 seconds. That will mean a train will depart Bridgeport station every three minutes, as opposed to every three minutes and 20 seconds.

The new trains are part of phase one of a 10-year transportation plan that features a planned light-rail line in Surrey and a Broadway subway line in Vancouver, between Commercial Drive and Arbutus Street.

Phase one will also include a 10 per cent increase in bus service across the region.

As well, TransLink is commencing planning for a new B-Line bus from Brighouse station to Metrotown with a launch date in five-10 years. The B-Line would mirror the 430 route.

A

s electric vehicle ownership is expected to surge in the coming decades, city planners are taking a second look at their policies surrounding charging infrastructure.

Richmond’s sustainability manager, Brendan McEwen, is embarking on a consultation process with the public, businesses and developers to explore expanding electric vehicle (EV) charge stations.

There are two main components to the proposed expansion: the introduction of publicly available, fast-charging stations, which currently don’t exist in Richmond; and increasing the number of charging stations in residences, in order to meet future demand for EVs. EV owner John Roston, founder of Plug-in Richmond, an EV advocacy group, contends the City of Richmond should subsidize the installation of home charging stations, which can prove to be a significant barrier for EV ownership.

Presently, an EV can be charged through regular electrical outlets (known as Level 1 charging within the EV industry), but the process takes about eight hours. However, if a homeowner buys a $500 charger to increase voltage to a Level 2 charge, an EV can be powered in 2-4 hours.

“Facilitating overnight, Level 2 charging at home is going to be far more important than providing public charging stations around Richmond both for Richmond residents and visitors to Richmond,” contends Roston, who likens the subsidies to those the city offers for energy-efficient

appliances.

Whereas one public charging station may cost $10,000, 20 subsidies could be provided, Roston estimates. He wants the City of Richmond to match Vancouver’s recent $3 million commitment to EV infrastructure over the next five years, on a per capita basis, with $1 million in subsidies and improvements.

McEwen notes, in a report to council this week, there are more significant barriers to charging infrastructure in older townhouses and apartments.

For instance, McEwen cites an estimate from the Condominium Homeowners Association that it would cost about $10,500 to retrofit an EV charger in a multi-family parking area. That’s why he is suggesting increasing the number of chargecapable parking spaces in new developments.

Presently, Richmond requires new apartment complexes to have 45 per cent of all parking spaces with Level 1 charging capacity (20 per cent wired and 25 per cent capable of being wired). This leaves 55 per cent of spaces without any potential for electrical charging.

This may prove problematic as EV sales could constitute 50 per cent of passenger vehicle sales by 2040, according to some estimates.

“Under the current policy, 55 per cent of parking space owners will face a significant cost to implement any form of home charging,” noted McEwen.

It’s suggested that more parking spaces be prewired for charging capabilities and that Level 2 charging become the standard. McEwen said the city will explore incentives for developers to do so.

Meanwhile, Roston said Level 3 charging stations are a must to spark EV ownership. The city reports it is exploring these “fast-charge” stations — perhaps with the support of local businesses — to be installed on major roads and highways.

Richmond has no fast-charging stations. It does have four, public Level 2 charging stations it provides free of charge. From 2013 to 2015, usage has increased about eight-fold. Last year, from January to September, EV users took advantage of $3,880 worth of electricity, saving 16.3 tonnes of carbon emissions (18,344-litres of gas).

Across the city, there are 27 private charging stations for public use (ie. IKEA, YVR, Aberdeen Centre).

Roston thinks EV use will become ubiquitous as battery technology advances and gas prices rise.

He said cars may soon be charged with solar-powered roofs and EVs can act as emergency back-up power source for homes during blackouts.

Alex Fraser gets new counterflow

A

seventh lane will be built on the Alex Fraser Bridge by spring 2018, announced Minister of Transportation Todd Stone Thursday.

The new counterflow lane for morning and evening rush hours is expected to save commuters 12 to 16 minutes during the afternoon and six minutes in the morning.

The federal and provincial governments are sharing the $70 million project costs.

The new lane will be added by slightly narrowing the six existing lanes and removing the shoulders.

Stone’s ministry said a moveable barrier will be added to allow four lanes of traffic northbound during the morning rush hour. It would then be repositioned to allow four lanes southbound for the afternoon rush hour where it will remain until morning.

“This vital investment means less time on the roads and more time for families to spend together,” said Delta MP Carla Qualtrough.

YVR reveals Flight Plan Alan Campbell

fter revealing it broke a new record for passenger traffic in 2016, the Vancouver Airport Authority this week unveiled its latest blueprint for its future — Flight Plan 2037.

At a Greater Vancouver Board of Trade event in Vancouver, YVR’s president and CEO, Craig Richmond, announced the integrated plan to guide the airport’s anticipated growth over the next 20 years.

Flight Plan 2037 provided YVR’s overarching vision for the next two decades, including its capital, terminal and financial plans, as well as the YVR 2037 Master Plan.

Incorporated within the $5.6 billion strategy are expanded terminals, a new taxiway over Grant McConachie Way, a geo-exchange heating/cooling system and upgraded roads and bridges to Sea Island, which will help YVR support the estimated 35 million passengers expected to travel through the airport annually by 2037.

The potential for a new runway — one possibly going west into environmentally sensitive land — was again included, but, as reported in the Richmond News last fall, might not happen, if at all, for another 20 years.

According to the airport, 22.3 million passengers used YVR last year, $5.3 billion was generated in total gross domestic product via the airport and $11.7 billion was driven into the Canadian economy.

term capacity needs at YVR, while meeting and enhancing our sustainability goals and ensuring we build in an incremental fashion.

“Our future is being shaped by the ongoing dialogue with thousands of British Columbians and our airline partners, who participated in our Phase 1 and 2 Master Plan consultations. Today, I am...inviting you to participate in Phase 3 of the YVR 2037 Master Plan and continue to help build our airport of the future.”

Alternative revenue-generating ideas, such as more land development, is also a possibility in the future, along with increasing the airport improvement fee, which is currently $20, or $5 for passengers flying within B.C. Details of the plan can be seen online at YVR2037.ca. Public input is still being sought for the airport’s Master Plan and a new phase of consultations is open until Feb. 20. An open house event will be held at the airport on Feb. 8, from 5-7 p.m.

Mom exercises patience of a saint

haron Chan does not have her challenges to seek.

As a mother of three, special needs kids, Chan said fresh obstacles dawn every morning, compelling her to delve daily into her seemingly bottomless well of patience.

Chan’s eldest son, Orlando, 10, has ADHD, and could be talking constantly in her ear, as she deals with a wild tantrum being thrown by daughter Luna, 8, who’s non-verbal, autistic and has an anxiety disorder.

And then there’s six-year-old Herman, who’s also autistic and, until recently, wasn’t able to speak properly and had serious trouble communicating.

“Oh, every day is different,” laughed stay-at-home mom Chan, who lives in a townhouse with her husband, on Williams Road, near Shell Road.

“If their routine changes, it can be very upsetting.

“Even if we go to a place where we normally park in the same spot and for some reason we can’t, Luna will throw a tantrum for hours. If she sees a bird, it can upset her for hours, as well.

“My older son talks all the time, so he’s in your other ear while all these other things are kicking off. It can be very entertaining in this house, that’s for sure.”

In a single-income household, Chan’s saving grace has, for the last few years, been funding from Variety — The Children’s Charity, which has helped her two youngest kids immensely in their development.

All three of Chan’s children attend the nearby Woodward elementary — Orlando is in Grade 5, Luna, Grade 3 and Her-

man, Grade 1 - where Luna and Herman each have full-time education assistants.

But it’s away from the classroom that Variety has stepped up to fill the gap in government funding to make sure Luna and Herman have every chance possible during their childhood development.

“Luna had challenges with eating and her weight dropped dramatically a couple of years ago,” said Chan.

“There is no way she would tolerate using a tube to feed her so, with the help of Variety, she was able to attend feeding therapy in Vancouver.

“They cost $130 per hour and we were going there every day for an hour and a half for four months, so you can imagine how much that would cost. It’s certainly beyond the reach, financially, for us, with only one income. Any government funding is just not nearly enough.

“It has made a big difference, however, and now she eats much better.”

And Herman, said Chan, more recently got vital therapy for his speech, thanks to funding from Variety, which will host its annual, Show of Hearts Telethon fundraiser on Feb. 12.

“His speech is improving so much and he can actually hold a conversation now. He’s much happier now and is actually initiating conversations; it has made a huge difference.

“He is such a nice boy but, because he has a very difficult time to have a conversation with his peers, he often becomes the target of bullying.

“Now he is able to see the (therapist) weekly and is starting to learn to speak. Our (government) autism funding dropped

dramatically when he turned six (from $22,000 to $6,000).

We are not able to pay privately for speech therapy because we are living on a single-income.

“Parenting three children with special needs is hard, but (Variety) has given us a light in the dark.”

As for her eldest, Orlando, “he gets his help from me,” laughed Chan.

“I spend a lot of time helping

him with his homework.”

Asked how she manages to cope on a daily basis with the demands of caring for three special needs kids, Chan said she gets “used to it.”

“I do whatever it takes to keep the kids happy. I do have to be very patient and it’s not easy, but there are often very rewarding moments, as well.

“It can be very special when your daughter learns to do something simple, such as brushing her teeth.”

Chan said she’s thankful that all her children sleep pretty well, as it gives her a chance to catch up on housework and prepare for the next school day.

But does she have any hopes for her kids’ collective futures?

“When they get older, I hope they can live independently and be happy,” she said.

“I’m trying my best to give them that chance.”

n Show of Hearts Telethon raises vital funds

The Show of Hearts Telethon has been running for almost the entire 50-year existence of Variety and proceeds from the annual broadcast event on Global BC have helped fund organizations such as BC Children’s’ Hospital, Canuck Place and neonatal intensive care units in hospitals all around B.C., while also directly helping children with special needs.

Tale explores the concept of home via the homeless HELENVARGA Book Club

F

our homeless people, each with a different story to tell, are brought to life by Richard Wagamese in Ragged Company.

These people were drawn into my heart and remained there long after I put this book away.

Amelia, Digger, Dick and Timber live on the streets of Toronto, and look out for each other, following the code of the street.

When the weather turns to sub-zero temperatures, the foursome seek out the warmth

of a local movie theatre. Being drawn into the world of the movies, they return frequently to warm up and enjoy the entertainment. On many of these occasions, they meet Granite, a journalist who is in the theatre hiding from his own life and through these coincidental meetings they strike up an unlikely friendship.

When the group win the lottery and have trouble cashing in the ticket as they have no ID or a fixed address, they turn to Granite for help. While this relationship has the potential to be portrayed

as the heroic white man coming to their rescue, this storyline is written honestly and humbly, showing Granite’s genuine caring for his friends, allowing them to take the lead on what they want and need from him.

The large lottery win sets the group up for life, but it also stirs up their pasts and causes each of them in turn to face some demons that they have been hiding from.

Wagamese takes the time to let us get to know each character and brings us into their lives respectfully and genuinely, telling their stories with an understanding of

what it means to be on the street.

The big win allows them to buy a house for all of them to live in, which begins the exploration of what exactly is home.

Is it necessary to have those four walls to have a home or is it something more than that — something that each of us have inside of us, that perhaps money cannot buy.

This thought provoking book is a must read — it is a beautifully written story that invokes many feelings and an understanding of humanity and what home means to each of us.

D

id you have any inkling that there are things, behaviours, situations, and goodness knows what else, for which the English language has NO words? In German, you can construct a new word by stringing together existing words (as Mark Twain delighted in demonstrating), but not in English.

In English you have to resort to descriptions.

Douglas Adams and John Lloyd gave this dilemma a twist in 1990 with their book, The Deeper Meaning of Liff: A dictionary of things that there aren’t any words for yet. They took toponyms (place-names) and turned them into words for which they concocted hilarious meanings — for example, “Nipishish (adj.) Descriptive of a person walking barefoot on gravel.”

Disappointingly, Adams and Lloyd didn’t provide the word I was looking for — the word to describe a certain behaviour that’s been intriguing me for years.

This “certain behaviour” first caught my attention in Italy, back in the 1970s, when I often travelled by train. Then, small towns and villages were linked by a network of trains called “locali.” The carriages were usually very old and the pace leisurely. The “locali” stopped at every minor station for several minutes, giving me time to look around. I observed that nearly every one of these minor stations had a pergola, over which the station master trained grape vines. Nearby was usually a garden plot, surrounded by a picket fence. A wooden bench, worn smooth by the station master’s cronies, stood in front of the fence. These weren’t just train stations, they were outdoor living spaces, lovingly tended.

To my amazement I encountered the same phenomenon in the hinterland of southern Germany, where the secondary railways stopped at every village. The German station masters may not have had pergolas with grape vines, but they often had gardens and benches. As in Italy, they’d turned what could have been a barren strip of blacktop into an inviting place from which to watch the world go by.

I was pleasantly surprised to come across something that reminded me of this “certain behaviour” here in Richmond, at the Lynas Lane Recycling Depot, where I’ve spotted garden chairs flanked by potted plants — the depot workers’ version of the station masters’ benches, I decided. Our friendly recycling men also have wit. They’ve transformed a garden near the exit into a venue for the whimsical display of salvaged objects — recently I saw bits of ironwork, a wringer washer, blue portrait bust, green frog and stuffed bear.

Why is this “certain behaviour”— which is heartwarming — detectable only in certain places? Size has something to do with it. The places where I noticed it are small and local rather than big and metropolitan. This means the people frequenting them are probably regulars — they’re familiar, not strangers. Big places are impersonal. In big places, anonymity prevails over familiarity.

Whether or not I ever find the word I’m looking for, this “certain behaviour” will continue to intrigue me. Why? Well, mainly because the juxtaposition of opposites — nature and machinery, beauty and ugliness, waste and creativity — results in unexpected delights and insights.

“There was a great deal of details and questions asked about my home and environment, which I thought is great,” she said, adding that she first applied to Go Fetch when it started as a dog-walking app and is awaiting her first overnight client.

The average cost for the service runs between $25 to $35 a day, with 15 per cent of that going to Go Fetch for making the online match.

“We really saw an untapped market in Canada and an easy way for dog owners to find the right care,” Cross said. “At kennels, dogs are in a cage and not given personal care. So, we thought we’d make something that provided more trust and was safe to transact.”

“With many kennels, and even boarding at veterinarians, dogs don’t get the experience of feeling like they’re on vacation,” Prochazka added. “I aim to try and provide that experience for them. While their owners are away, I think they should be having a fun time themselves. Home boarding is a great alternative these days if the home boarder is experienced, and fully prepared to create an experience for the dog based on their needs.”

Prochazka said she plans to develop relationships with pet owners to help them have more peace of mind when leaving their dog behind by providing daily message updates and photos.

Vancouver was first out of the gate with Go Fetch. Quickly added was Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Burnaby. And traffic has been steadily building.

“We’re getting a lot more activity than we expected,” Cross said. “I wouldn’t say we’re overwhelmed yet. But definitely, the phones are ringing and the sign-up list is growing.”

Richmond breast cancer researcher defends her work said in an email to the News. “This was above and beyond the call of duty, as the rules only require UBC laboratories to keep records for five years. However, we, as a laboratory, were ready to stand up to scrutiny and therefore allowed UBC to bend the rules by requiring us to go back 14 years. We had no intention of giving up until all the data was fully defended.”

Dunn added the research being scrutinized was the result of a lot of hard working students and felt it was her duty to defend their work.

“It made me sick to think that someone could attack their work with no evidence,” she said, adding the university directly contacted a number of science journals — to which the research was published without her knowledge — to complain that there may be errors in research reporting.

“In the letter, it left it up to the (journal) editor to take any necessary action he or she felt necessary,” Dunn said. “I, in turn, had no idea that UBC sent these emails to the journals as I was not copied. However, 166 of my co-authors were, and I found out second hand.”

Dunn said she contacted the journal editors and provided a defense of the matter.

“The judge and jury in this case were ultimately the journal editors, who did not support the UBC findings. The results from my research were upheld, which is why there were no retractions,” Dunn said.

“Had the editors found it necessary to make changes, they would have done so promptly. Corrections would have taken place within weeks of the initial contact, which occurred

was hoping to start the new year with a bang, but instead it started with a whimper.

I won’t go into the gory details; let it suffice to say that I have a chronic gut condition. I ended up spending six-and-a-half hours in the ER at Vancouver General Hospital on Jan. 2. Now there’s a place bubbling with action! Because of all the ice on the roads and sidewalks, about 80 per cent of the people at the ER showed up with broken hands, arms, legs and dislocated shoulders.

Apparently, my possible intestinal obstruction offered a refreshing diversion for the doctors and nurses. We’re not talking extravaganza here, but they certainly sat up and took notice.

I guess the term “intestinal obstruction” is akin to saying “Dr. Smith” when making a reservation at a swanky restaurant, because they got me in right away to see an intake nurse. Then it was a lot of hurry up and wait until I saw a doctor. Then it was another hour or more until a nurse brought me some vile liquid to drink before my CT scan. Then, I had to wait another two hours after I finished it before they’d do the scan. Oh joy.

I know a lot of people bash our medical system, and yes, there are undeniable improvements that could be made. But for the most part, it’s pretty efficient. And the ER staff work like Trojans.

Gone, however, are the days when doctors actually ask you to disrobe so they can examine you properly. They do it all through

your clothes. Or if you’re lucky enough to get a gown, through that. There’s very little “laying on of hands” and instead, loads of expensive whirring, humming equipment.

Old school chit-chat, that doctors used to engage in with their patients, is also a thing of the past. Now, it’s all business. I can’t complain though, I got my CT scan within five hours and the diagnosis an hour and a half after that.

As a result of this experience, I decided to test drive a new concept — gratitude. No, I’m not grateful for feeling unwell. But I am grateful for this cosmic/spiritual reminder to honour my body and take care of my health.

I’ve lived with a chronic gut problem for nearly 38 years, and it’s taught me a lot of valuable lessons: • We only get as much as we can bear. (God clearly has a heck of a lot of faith in me).

• “That which does not kill us, makes us stronger.” (Friedrich Nietzsche) • You have to put your own oxygen mask on first, before helping others.

• Taking care of ourselves is priority number one. This is NOT selfish. It’s smart. Because if you’re sick, you can’t help others. Do the math.

So, after getting home from the ER, I accepted my fate, took my RX, donned my bathrobe, and awaited the arrival of good health. Or at least, better health. It only took a few days. Now, the sun is shining, it’s gloriously crisp outside, and the world is a pretty spectacular place. I am thankful for all those things.

More diamonds for Richmond City Baseball Mark Booth

ichmond City Baseball (RCBA) didn’t suddenly stumble upon $600,000 but this is probably the next best thing.

The growing association, which featured nearly 550 players last season, has reached an agreement with the City of Richmond to operate and manage the concession at the Palmer/Garden City Neighbourhood School Park. It will be the new home to Richmond City Baseball’s grassroots levels — ranging from U5 Blastball to U9 Tadpole.

The 17-year-old facility, that includes six diamonds configured around a field house, had been operated by the Richmond Boys Fastball Association, which contributed $50,000 to the initial building cost. However, their current numbers and age of players makes a full-time move to the Steveston Ball Park more suitable. Dialogue between the two organizations began last year when RCBA asked if it could use the facility to host B.C. Minor Baseball’s U11 Championships.

The city approached Richmond Girls Softball about its interest in the facility before council gave the agreement with RCBA final approval last month. The com-

plex remains available for all user groups, from adult slo-pitch to youth programs. The RCBA will make daily use of three diamonds for games.

The additional venue greatly enhances RCBA’s longterm vision which was providing proper hubs for all its divisions.

The association had approached the city last year regarding the

re-development of its Whiteside/ South Arm Park location to include, concession, washrooms and reconfiguation of the diamonds. The price came back at $600,000.

“The long term plan is to still rebuild Whiteside which will continued to be used for practices,” continued Braaten. “But that type of money is going to take a long time as a non-profit organization.

The new venue is part of a productive off-season that earlier included B.C. Minor Baseball approving RCBA joining the elite College Prep League for Midget age players.

The association is also hosting its annual Intro to Baseball Day on Sunday, Jan. 29 at Minoru Park’s Latrace Field from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It provides potential new players an opportunity to test their skills at a variety of fun stations.

Seafair Midget C2s win Seattle tourney

eafair Midget C2 hockey team certainly made the most of its trip down south to participate at Seattle Junior Hockey Association’s Arctic Blast in Lynnwood.

Playing a whopping five games during a 24-hour period, Seafair took tournament honours with a 3-1 victory over North Delta in the championship game. The locals played a pair of preliminary contests on Saturday, then concluded round-robin play at 7 a.m. Sunday morning. A semi-final win over Burnaby set the stage for the gold medal tilt. The event brought many Lower Mainland teams down I-5 for the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, to the point where Seafair ended up playing against only one American opponent.

“It really was a great team effort, especially with that schedule,” said Seafair assistant Chris Wong who had to oversee all the coaching duties for the tournament. “The boys kept their shifts short and knew what they had to do. It really was a job well done.”

The final was against a physical North Delta team that has one of the top records in Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey’s Fraser Valley League. Seafair handled to aggressively play with poise and secured victory in the tight-checking affair with an empty goal.

“Regardless if we won or not, it was a great weekend for the kids and the parents to get a chance to bond,” added Wong. “Our team manager Rhonda Barish derserves a lot of credit for putting the trip together, booking the hotel and organizing everything.”

is famous Hollywood parents were regulars at Minoru Arena for two straight seasons, now Wyatt Russell will be in Richmond Sockeyes’ colours again for the team’s 15th annual Alumni Game on Saturday night.

Russell was just 16 when he earned a spot on the Sockeyes roster during the 2002-03 season, backing up veteran goaltender Kevin McKay. A year later he took on the bulk of the crease work and helped Richmond repeat as Cyclone Taylor Cup provincial champions. Russell’s two biggest fans were his parents — actors Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn — who purchased a house in Shaughnessy during their son’s hockey stint north of the border..

Wyatt would go on to play two years at the junior “A” level before earning a scholarship to the University of Alabama.

He took his career to Europe, playing professional in Germany and the Dutch Elite League. A nagging hip injury forced him to retire in 2010. He has since followed his parents’ path and launched a successful acting career.

Russell won’t be back between the pipes Saturday.
