y the time you read this, I’ll be joyful and grateful for all the blessings in my life.

I will be filled with laughter and love for those around me — and those who aren’t.

I will be at peace and attuned to the magic of Christmas Eve. Well, we can hope.

Quite frankly, I’m feeling none of the above right now.

That freakin’ string of lights on the back fence keeps blinking out, the liquor store line-up is making me sweat, and I’m battling a nagging fear that I’ll fail to deliver “the best Christmas ever!”

I’m perfectly aware of the insanity of all this.

Bombs are not dropping on my head, there’s plenty of food in the fridge (although my teenage son begs to differ) and I’m in no danger of dying from a fentanyl overdose More than once in the past week, I’ve stopped and reminded myself to keep some perspective; life is good. My problems are of the first world variety. But no sooner does that thought enter my head than it’s nudged out by, “OMG I still haven’t got so-and-so something” or “Christmas morning will be ruined if I don’t find a gift with that ‘wow’ factor.”

I’m not sure when it happened — that I got so neurotic about Christmas. Actually, I do.

It started when I bought into the hair-brained and ultimately self-centred notion that everyone’s happiness is my responsibility. This delusion can afflict all kinds of otherwise intelligent folks, but us mothers seem particularly susceptible.

The intentions may be good. In fact, it’s often seen as a sweet quality. “Aww, how nice, she just wants to see everyone happy.”

But it can have some sinister side effects.

Thinking we’re in charge of others’ emotions is not only arrogant, it’s also insulting. It says, “I don’t trust you to be accountable for yourself” — hardly a way to build self-reliance.

And then there’s the glaringly obvious fact that frantically running around malls trying to buy joy sends completely the wrong message if we want our kids to understand this is a time of year to reflect on peace, love and the plight of others.

In other words, (note to self) it’s time for a visit to the doctor — Seuss, that is.

Clearly, a dose of How The Grinch Stole Christmas! is in order before I’m accused, not of stealing gifts from under the tree, but of robbing myself and my family of a deeper appreciation of giving.

The saving grace, as with every Christmas story, is it’s not too late. By the time you read this, with the help of the good doctor and a glass of eggnog, I trust I will be joyful, grateful and attuned to the magic of the moment.

So, here’s to wishes coming true. May all yours come to pass. Merry Christmas.

Dear Editor, Re: Poppies on Street Signs a Waste, Letters, Dec. 21.

To Mr. Pollard: Actually, when my 94-year-old dad, who served in the RCAF during the Second World War and who resides on Moffatt Road noticed the poppy on the street sign,

Dear Editor, Re: Poppies on Street Signs a Waste, Letters Dec. 21.

There is a street sign in Richmond with a poppy on it honouring my uncle. I missed the article in the Richmond News on Dec. 14, but was aware of the project to install street signs in Richmond recognizing veterans killed in war.

I had stopped by the Richmond Archives to drop off a memorial handcrafted by my uncle to honour his brother, and the archives staff told me about the project.

I think it is important to know what streets are named after veterans. Having been born and raised in Richmond, I am aware of which streets those are, but newcomers to Richmond would have no idea.

Along with the memorial, I dropped off a memoir written by my living uncle about the

I resolve to teach my grandsons Dear Editor, In the past, this publication has graciously printed some Santa wishlists of mine.

But, having recognized how naively idealistic and un-realistic many of those wishes were, I have decided that this year, I would submit a New Year’s resolution instead.

As a grandfather and retired educator, I’m hopeful I can do a decent job satisfying the following: In the coming year, I resolve to play whatever part I can in helping my grandsons develop their abilities to differentiate and separate the truth from falsehoods, facts from fiction, the genuine from the artificial, honesty from deceitfulness, trustworthiness from perfidy, the meaningful from the superficial, the authentic from the counterfeit, and worthy and justifiable values from those that are not.

I believe these are skills and capabilities that will help them more than any others to become highly educated, eminently decent, happy and fulfilled adults.

Thanks, RCMP Dear Editor, Today, I listened to one of my favourite Christmas songs. It is about a child who “wants a hippopotamus for Christmas;” it is about a child’s faith in an old man who drives a sleigh through Christmas night, delivering wonderful gifts.

The child also believes that even the wildest wish can be granted on that magical night.

It made me think about what I want for Christmas. I have long since grown out of wishing for zoo animals and I have pretty much everything that I need. I would like peace.

I have seen the absence of peace, and I want my family to be safe. Not a big ask, really. And then I thought about the men and women who will be driving around Christmas night delivering just that!

When I am enjoying time with family, they will be away from theirs — in some cases, thousands of kilometres away.

When I am enjoying all the food of the festive season, they will be dining on a sandwich, because cafes and donut shops are not open.

To top it off, human emotions and alcohol make this a dangerous season for police.

While the child has faith in Santa, I have faith in that white car with the red and blue lights and our RCMP members in it.

They do not just deliver peace one night a year.

They deliver it 365 days a year. And while they do not come down the chimney, they will come to your door anytime, day or night.

I would like to thank the Richmond RCMP for the gift of peace!

Please be thankful, Richmond Dear Editor, The year, 2016, is just about over and a brand new year will be on the horizon soon.

This year has been rather exceptional for Richmond.

There have been many issues, celebrations and controversies. The debate and discussion on most of these issues has been mostly respectful and productive.

Unfortunately, our intercultural harmony was challenged by some individuals who dwell in the past of an imaginary Canada that never existed. Since its founding days, Canada has been a country inhabited by a variety of ethnicities.

Now, more than ever, and especially in Canadian cities, our country has evolved into

a truly multicultural and multilingual country. People from every corner of the world representing more than 200 countries call Canada home.

As such, there is no place for racists in our community.

In this context, it was very gratifying to see the community of Richmond stand together against racist activities or attempts to divide us.

The Richmond News, as a well-respected community newspaper, must be commended for providing an effective platform to debate and discuss the issues in a civilized manner.

teveston resident and dog walker Isabel Huenefeld is taking extra caution these days while walking her furry clients in and around the village, as well as other popular pooch destinations in Richmond.

That’s because she and other dog walkers have become aware of a pack of coyotes in south Richmond that may be becoming more aggressive toward pets and humans as the winter food supply runs short.

Furthermore, there are accounts, says Huenefeld, of people feeding the coyotes, which is illegal under the B.C. Wildlife Act, as coyotes are considered a dangerous animal.

Coyote sightings in human populated areas can be reported to the Ministry of Environment (1-877-952-7277), as well as the Stanley Park Ecology Society (604-6819453), which documents coyote sightings, as well as their behaviour, in the Lower Mainland.

At the south dyke at No. 3 Road, where there is an off-leash area for dogs, coyote sightings became so frequent last year that the City of Richmond posted a warning sign for pet owners to keep their dogs closely supervised. On June 10, one coyote was seen approaching people and dogs in

the park, according to the society’s online coyote sighting map.

The pack of four coyotes in the farmland area of south Richmond was last spotted and documented on Oct. 16, between Gilbert and No. 2 roads.

The society documented at least one account of a person leaving meat out for a coyote on the West Dyke Trail, near Williams Road, in late November.

One of the most concentrated areas for coyote sightings in the past year is Brighouse elementary school, where school officials have had to keep a watchful eye; on May 19, a coyote growled at a person on Azure Road.

Another popular area is the West Dyke Trail, which is the coyote’s natural habitat (east of the dyke is an official wildlife management area) as it’s heavily populated with small mammals as a food source.

Quilchena golf course also provides a popular pasture for the animals.

According to the society, there are no places a coyote cannot be spotted in Richmond. Even City Centre has had a few documented sightings this year, as coyotes wander through the Richmond Nature Park and then the Garden City Lands.

The society’s Co-Existing with Coyotes program has some helpful tips for those unfamiliar with the animal: If you encounter one, be “big, brave and loud” to scare it away; never feed a coyote as it will become accustomed to human contact

and be more bold in its actions, resulting in its likely destruction; keep your pets on a leash; report sightings.

The society notes that coyotes are typically timid animals and do not want human interaction. Dogs and cats make up about two per cent of their diets. An attack on a human is extremely rare.

ichmond’s “iconic” golden arches on No. 3 Road will be preserved after city planners worked with McDonald’s to maintain the “heritage character” of the large sign that has long beckoned hungry Richmondites.

Questions arose as to whether or not the first golden arches in Canada would be preserved when McDonald’s gets the green light to demolish the existing restaurant, to replace it with a larger, more modern building featuring a double drive-thru.

“Staff has been working with McDonald’s to retain the iconic ‘golden arches’ as an urban memory and commemoration of the longstanding presence of McDonald’s in the city centre,” notes a report last month from Richmond’s director of development Wayne Craig.

The No. 3 Road location is home to the first McDonald’s outside the United States, after opening in 1967.

Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the restaurant’s opening, and other design elements in the new building may be featured to mark this occasion.

“Staff feel that the 50th anniversary of McDonald’s in Canada is a unique opportunity to celebrate and incorporate this valued history,” stated the report.

The proposed, refurbished golden arches sign will feature a maple leaf in the middle and the words “billions and billions served” will be removed.

restricted covenant on the sign to ensure it remains in place, unless the city approves its removal.

The sign is said to “enrich the pedestrian experience” along the road.

The new 500-square-metre, single-storey building will be located in the same location as the existing one.

Better exhaust and noise-cancellation technology should provide relief to condo owners to the north of the site.

An outdoor picnic area is proposed between the building and No. 3 Road.

The property is designated under the city’s Official Community Plan to allow for low-rise apartments or townhouses, but McDonald’s has decided to maintain it as a commercial site.

While McDonald’s was issued a development permit, there is no stated timeline for project completion.

Woman, dogs homeless after fire A

woman and her two dogs are now homeless after her trailer in rural Richmond was burned down in a fire.

Firefighters were called to the 17000 block of River Road — near No. 8 Road — just before midnight on Tuesday after a neighbour spotted some flames coming from the trailer.

Thankfully, the woman and her dogs managed to escape the blaze relatively unscathed, but her trailer, according to Richmond Fire-Rescue, is likely beyond repair.

Richmond Fire-Rescue spokesperson Brian MacLeod told the News the fire was caused by the “improper installation and usage of a wood stove.”

“The woman and her dogs were treated for smoke inhalation; one of the dogs has burns,” added MacLeod.

Emergency social services, said MacLeod, are putting the woman up for a few nights until she finds alternative accommodation.

embers of Country Meadows Senior Men’s Golf Club will once again deliver some Christmas cheer to several Richmond families this year.

A tradition started by one of its members in 1999, the Roger Weseen Christmas Hamper Drive began humbly by bringing a turkey and some canned food to a family in need.

Now, the members raise about $3,000 annually and collect close to 2,000 pounds of non-perishable food for upwards of 15 families in Richmond.

ichmond city council has agreed to fund a new outreach program for Gateway Theatre that aims to better understand its Chinese audience.

The $30,000, taken from an excess gaming revenues

reserve account, dubbed the Council Community Initiatives Account (CCIA), will fund new “dialogue mechanisms” with Richmond residents.

“Gateway recognizes that two-way dialogue with their audience, both English and Chinese-speaking, is key to ongoing success,” notes a City of Richmond report.

The intent of the outreach program is to better understand the desires of the theatre community on the whole. Richmond Gateway Theatre Society would maintain and develop the new

strategies for dialogue.

Last year, Gateway’s director Jovanni Sy expanded the Pacific Festival, which then featured four Cantonese plays with Mandarin and English surtitles.

With Richmond’s high Chinese immigrant population, Sy is wanting to bring the various theatre cultures together, beneath one roof.

Last year he noted the festival aimed to attract new Chinese immigrants, who may not know about the theatre.

“We have a changing demographic in Richmond, which is accelerating. Ethnicity, multiculturalism and language differences are all at the centre of it,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie, a past member of Gateway’s board of directors in the 1990s.

“What [Richmond Gateway Theatre Society] is asking for is absolutely central to the future success of Gateway Theatre,” added Brodie.

CCIA was created in July, 2015, with $3 million of unallocated of gaming revenues.

It is used at council’s discretion and now has a balance of $713,500. As a policy, each year, two per cent of gaming revenues will be added to the account; $362,000 will be added in 2017.

Centenarian never wastes a single day Linda Yale getting set to turn 104 next week ALANCAMPBELL Staff Reporter

f I wake up in the morning and sit around and do nothing, it’s a waste.”

So says the evergreen Linda Yale, who will turn an incredible 104 next Wednesday, Dec. 28, when asked about the secret to her longevity.

“If I knew (the secret), I would be a millionaire. But you’re only granted so many days on Earth, use them. Why waste it. I don’t know how many days I have left,” added Yale, who has only very recently started using her walking frame to get around.

Yale, who is Gilmore Gardens’ most senior resident, said keeping busy in retirement has been one of the keys to her health, as well as the occasional glass of wine from her wellstocked wine rack.

As well as being part of a quilt-making club,

Montreal-born Yale — who moved to B.C. and Richmond in 1969 when her husband’s employer transferred him — spends a large chunk of her free time recycling stamps for charity, on behalf of the Eastern Star.

“It keeps me out of trouble,” smiled Yale, who has two children, three grandchildren and one great grandchild, who turns six on Boxing Day. She’s also a bit of a shark at cribbage, playing twice a week at the Minoru Seniors Centre.

“I won $6 the other day and $11 the week before,” she laughed.

Yale retired from her accountancy profession in 1979, but way back in the day, as a young woman in Montreal in the ‘30s, she was renowned for being the only female fencer in the province and competing against the men.

“I don’t think there were any other female fencers in Canada at the time; the sport wasn’t very well known,” she recalled.

“And I think I was the only girl in the cross-

country skiing team, as well; we had to climb the mountain four times a day; there were no tow ropes and we had to wax our skis at the top of the mountain each time.”

As for having a birthday party for the 104th time, Yale is taking it one day at a time.

“I had one last year, so I’m not sure this time. It’s only when I get there that I know.”

Film on fitness-fanatic seniors needs funding Alan Campbell

he maker of a documentary — that features a world record-breaking, 82-year-old Richmond runner — has launched a crowdsourcing campaign to finish off the project.

Elton Hubner spent two years creating The Fit Generation, which tells the stories of six British Columbians in their 70s and 80s, who are well known in their communities for their active lifestyles, personal achievements and have battled the likes of cancer, arthritis, chronic back pain, knee replacements and, inevitably, the loss of loved ones.

One of the Brazilian-born and Germanraised Hubner’s six “characters” is Richmond’s Gwen McFarlan, a retired teacher who started running while fighting cancer in her early 60s and now holds the world record in the marathon in her age group (80-84).

In the film, the cameras follow McFarlan’s struggle to recover from an ankle injury that has prevented her from attempting to break more world records.

However, Hubner, who has largely funded the project himself, needs some financial help

to finish it off in terms of professional colour and sound correction so that he can release the documentary to festivals around the world next summer.

“When I first came to Vancouver, I saw a lot of active seniors; from people lifting weights in the gym to people riding their bikes or running in Stanley Park; even dragon-boating and skiing,” said filmmaker Hubner, 35, who

has travelled the world but fell in love with Canada and Vancouver, which he has called home since 2011.

Hubner met with the Forever Young group — senior runners in Richmond — and they told him about McFarlan.

“I was reluctant, at first, to speak with her because she was so exceptional. But then she got injured and I wanted to hear about

her challenges,” he added.

“I wanted to highlight people such as Gwen and ask the question of others, ‘do you have a better excuse not to be active?’”

Hubner knows all about running, being a high-performance athlete as a teenager at 5,000 and 10,000 metres, including coming fifth in the South American Championship while representing Brazil aged 15.

He thinks the film will not only encourage other seniors to exercise, but also help younger generations understand that their own future depends on the effort they make to stay healthy and fit.

Hubner, who owns and operates Eyes Multimedia, made the documentary with the help of Canadian cinematographer Chris Wheeler.

He needs $20,000 to complete the project and has raised $2,000 via a Kickstarter campaign. “This story deserves to be finished; I want to involve other professionals to do a better job,” he said.

“We’re going to make it, I’m sure.”

imes have changed when Wes Mackey’s first music gig in Augusta, Georgia about five decades ago paid him 50 cents and a chicken sandwich.

Today, the pay is considerably better. But the music hasn’t changed that much.

The septuagenarian still belts out the blues and he’ll be doing just that with his Back in Blue! show on Jan. 6 at the ANAF Unit 284 in Steveston.

“That was a long time ago, but a sandwich and 50 cents was pretty good for a 19 or 20-year-old who was just picking up little gigs as I went along with a band,” said Mackey who, on Wednesday morning, had just returned from Revelstoke and a ski lodge show for heli-skiers that was part of his still crowded show schedule.

“I do a lot of work in Europe, too,” he said. “And I just came back from South Carolina where I spent two weeks doing promotional stuff and a couple of smaller shows.”

But with all of that going on, he’s keen to come to Steveston and play the blues that he took to after hearing legends such as John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters and Jimmy Reed.

“Those are just some of the old time blues players I looked up to,” Mackey said.

“And I got a chance with the band I was with at the University of Georgia to back up some of them.”

Those brushes with fame inspired Mackey to make music his life, with much of it spent north of the border.

drink interrupted at times, but he got through them and he rekindled a love for his music in his forties — about the time when he first found his way to B.C. where he now lives in Vancouver.

A

group of Grade 12 economics students from Cambie secondary showed their teamwork, organizational savvy and community spirit to help boost the Richmond Christmas Fund recently.

The students, who were part of Reach Richmond, a program which is designed to bring the aspect of philanthropy to various high school classes in the district, ran a carnival games day at Aberdeen Centre on Nov. 26, raising a total of $457.85.

But while that money will be put towards helping local, needy families, the exercise was also valuable in exposing youngsters to the realm of community volunteerism and a good dose of personal development, said Jacky Tang and Gurdy Jagde, who co-founded Reach.

“Most of the students who were involved said they learned some real-life, interpersonal skills they felt would be valuable in the future,” Tang said. “And they learned more about their community and the

role non-profit organizations play.”

They also expressed a desire to volunteer with the Christmas fund in the future and recommend to others to get involved with future Reach projects.

“That’s been a major point of this program – to foster a sense of philanthropy and social responsibility with young students,” said Tang who graduated in 2012 from Burnett secondary and is now studying pharmaceutical sciences at UBC. Jagde graduated from McNair secondary and is studying criminology at Kwantlen

Polytechnic University. Both were part of Richmond Cares Richmond Gives’ (RCRG) Youth Now program, which connects youth with local charities; now they serve as board members.

With this year’s Reach program completed, the two are looking at the coming year and an expansion to other schools now the groundwork has been laid.

Next year, the Richmond Christmas Fund will remain connected with Cambie secondary, while Tang and Jagde are open to get involved with other schools and non-profit organizations.

s with other festivals in the Jewish year, there seems to be a dual origin to Hanukkah, both seasonal and historical.

The historical story is quite well known: the Maccabee family, led by brother Judah, led a revolt/civil war against the occupying Syrian forces and the assimilated Jewish temple leadership in Jerusalem around the year 165 BCE. They succeeded in forcing the Syrians to make peace and give them control of Jerusalem and its surrounding environs.

The Maccabees celebrated the victory with the inauguration of Hanukkah (a word meaning “rededication”).

Each subsequent year, the holiday was celebrated as a tribute to the Maccabean ruler in power.

By the 1st century of the Common Era, the rabbis of the Talmud had grown weary of this celebration honoring descendants of the original Maccabees, many of whom were no longer worthy of the tribute. Nonetheless, the holiday had found appeal among the people. For this reason, the rabbis introduced the “miracle of the oil,” attempting to divert attention on Hanukkah away from the Maccabees.

The ancient rabbis manufactured a tale of the Maccabees re-claiming the Temple and re-kindling the ancient Menorah (seven-branched candelabra) with a lone vial of oil. The miracle was that only enough oil for one day lasted eight days!

Not only were the rabbis concerned about paying tribute to less-thanworthy descendants, they were also opposed to celebrating a miracle of “a few prevailing against the many.”

“Miracles,” such as this, encouraged zealotry in the place of reason and sensible decision, was their concern.

In modern times, we have come to understand the two stories of Hanukkah as one: The Maccabees gloriously re-conquered the Temple and discovered the single vial of oil that burned for eight days.

There is also a seasonal dimension to the holiday. Long before the Maccabees, there was some kind of established festival at this time of year. The festival had to do with the gradual increase in daylight after the ominous, steadily darkening days of late autumn. A number of legends connect Hanukkah with this winter solstice celebration. Another motif had to do with the kindling of fire, reported as an ancient Jewish custom at the dedication of the temple altar. A third motif related to the festival of Sukkot (an eight-day harvest festival in the early Fall).

Some historians believe the Maccabees were engaged in warfare during Sukkot and unable to celebrate it at its proper time.

Therefore, when they concluded their victory the first thing they did was celebrate Sukkot for eight days. In subsequent years this winter celebration became Hanukkah.

However one chooses to understand the holiday or interpret its history, Hanukkah remains the most celebrated occasion on the Jewish calendar.

ason Aginsky, a 16-yearold Grade 11 student at McMath secondary, is this year’s recipient of the Lamplight Award, sponsored by the Centre for Judaism of the Lower Fraser Valley.

The award honours a youth who has performed an outstanding act of community service.

Aginsky was the secondyoungest participant in the BC Ride to Conquer Cancer in August 2016, when he rode the 250 kilometres from Surrey to Seattle over two days.

“He’d announced eight months earlier that it was a cause he was determined to n Jason Aginsky support and no safety concerns raised by his worried mother could deter him,” said Mark Aginsky, Jason’s father.

Jason was motivated to do this ride after losing his grandmother, Shirley Kramer, to ovarian cancer in 2003, when he was just three years old.

He joined The Village Idiots, a group of riders in the Steveston area, and after raising close to $4,000 to support the BC Cancer Agency, powered through the race.

“We followed him on day one by car and he was utterly exhausted, on the brink of admitting he’d ‘bitten off more than he could chew’ by participating,” his father recalled.

“The winds were against the riders that day, and it was hard going. But when it comes to determination, Jason has it in spades, and he pushed through on day two, waiting hours at the last stop so he could cross the finish line with other members of the group who were well behind him.”

In total, this year’s participants in the BC Ride to Conquer Cancer raised $7.1 million for cancer research.

Jason will receive the Lamplighter Award on Thursday at the Semiahmoo Shopping Centre, at a ceremony attended by Rabbi Falik and Simie Schtroks, directors of the Centre for Judaism, White Rock Mayor Wayne Baldwin and representatives of the cities of Surrey, White Rock, Langley and Delta.

“Chanukah celebrates the victory of light over darkness and goodness over evil,” said Simie Schtroks.

“This is a most appropriate opportunity to motivate and inspire young people to make this world a brighter and better place. By filling the world with goodness and kindness, that light can dispel all sorts of darkness.”

YVR celebrates new China link YVR celebrated another new air link with China Wednesday (Dec. 20) as China Eastern began non-stop service using an Airbus A330-200 to Nanjing, China. The year-round service will operate three times weekly to Nanjing Lukou International Airport (NKG). China Eastern Airlines has been operating at YVR for the past 12 years after launching daily service to Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) in 2004. In 2015, they added new direct service to Kunming — one of China’s key connecting hubs as a tag onwards from Shanghai. The new service will fly non-stop to Nanjing and then carry on to Kunming. According to YVR officials, the addition of the service will create more than 162 jobs at the airport and throughout B.C. and will add an additional $9.5 million in Gross Domestic Product, $1.8 million in taxes and $3.2 million in wages.

“People will be arriving before we officially open. Our guests are incredibly dedicated with many returning each year to support such an important community cause.”

Tsang said the significance of having high quality local health care nearly hit very close to home a mere two weeks ago. “Earlier this month, I wasn’t feeling very comfortable. There was a general pain, almost like indigestion.

Something didn’t feel right.

“The next day at around 5 p.m., the pain got worse and I decided I should go to the Emergency Department at Richmond Hospital.

As soon as they started to put some pressure on my abdomen, they suspected something.

I had some blood tests and a scan. Then I was

told I needed my appendix out that evening.

It was an emergency.

“Everything happened so quickly. I texted my wife to say I wasn’t going to be able to come home because I was scheduled for surgery.

By 10 p.m. that evening I was in the operating room, and an hour and a half later, I was in my room recovering.

“I was in and out of the hospital in less than 24 hours. I got great care, and I feel very lucky.

If it hadn’t been treated quickly it could have become very serious. Even life-threatening.”

With strong support for the event from restaurant owner Veena Ganatra, as well as White Spot CEO, Warren Erhart, net proceeds from the staff fundraiser have totalled more than $110,000 since its inception in 2001.

“Everyone comes away feeling good about the contributions they made for Richmond Hospital,” Tsang says. “It’s about looking after your own community. That’s what life is about.”

Richmond International features 70 teams

I

t’s the biggest week of the minor hockey season with a whopping 70 teams taking over all three of the city’s ice venues for the 36th annual Richmond International Bantam Midget Hockey Tournament (RIBMHT), staring on Boxing Day. Hosted by Richmond Minor Hockey Association, this holiday event has a reputation of attracting teams from afar and this year is no exception. Overseen by longtime tournament chair Wendy Steadman, organizers have done an outstanding job putting together a wide variety of entries with plenty of international flavour.

The biggest of all is the Hungarian U16 national team, marking the first time in 18 years the tournament will feature a European entry.

Coached by Glen Williamson, a former scout with the Los Angeles Kings and assistant coach with the Winnipeg Jets, Hungary has already enjoyed success in B.C. earlier this year, winning the Kamloops International Bantam Tournament last spring.

In Richmond, the team will be part of the Midget Major Division and begins play Dec. 27 against the Prince George Cougars at 8 p.m. at the Minoru Arenas’ stadium rink.

Adding to the intrigue of holiday tournaments in recent years is the emergence of academy programs and the opportunity to take on teams from minor hockey associations. RIBMHT’s Midget Major Division will feature teams from Major Midget, Midget AAA, the Canadian School Sport Hockey League (Academy), U.S. leagues and Europe.

Richmond Minor’s top Midget and Bantam rep teams will take a step back this season and compete in their respective Tier 2 Divisions. The Seafair A1 Islanders will carry the local hopes in the 20-team Midget Tier 1 Division and are enjoying a solid season in Pacific Coast’s top tier with just one loss in 12 league games to date.

hanks to a big-time community-effort, organizers are expecting close to 400 participants for the 20th edition of the Steveston Icebreaker 8km Run/Walk.

Slated for Sunday, Jan. 17, the event is a major fundraiser for the Kajaks Track and Field Club and typically attracts elite runners, looking to take advantage of a flat and fast course that serves as the season opener of the Lower Mainland Road Race Series. However, the Icebreaker’s popularity has surged the past couple years as the business community has become more involved.

“Four years ago, we didn’t have many sponsors and we really were looking to the community for help,” recalled race director Jared Hulme. “Now, the whole city has really got behind the Kajaks. So many different businesses and restaurants have stepped up. After the run, we invite everyone back to the (Steveston) community centre to warm-up and feed you. There is a ton of food, awards and music. It’s a real

community-based run now.”

“We had about 150 runners four years ago, 250 two years ago and 300 last year.

Now, we are hoping for 400.”

What has helped bolster the number of entries is team registration. Local running clubs are signing up teams of runners.

Among them is the Kajaks’ own Masters group that trains twice weekly at Minoru Park and is always welcoming new members. There is also now designated pricing for seniors and students and walkers are encouraged.

The scenic course starts and finishes at

the foot of No. 1 Road in Steveston Village.

Runners head east, along the shore of the Fraser River, down by Imperial Village and through the Britannia Shipyards. Once they reach No. 3 Road, they turn around and come back. There are race marshals throughout the course and the City of Richmond gets involved to ensure safe conditions along the entire trek.

The timing of the event works well for the Kajaks as they gear up for another track and field season.

“We get pretty busy with all the other stuff once our season gets going,” added Hulme.

“We like the idea that it’s the first run of the year and a chance to run a fast time.

“The Kajaks’ name is very recognizable in the running community, especially with its ties to (founders) (Doug and Diane) Clement,” added Hulme. “We put a lot of pride and work into it, making sure it’s well organized with lots of food. We want everyone to come here and have a good time.”

The race is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m.

Anne is predeceased by her husband George in 2004, her mother and father, Peter and Eudocia Shewchuk and siblings Father Vladimir, Father Sebastian, Mike, Nick, Paul, Joseph, Sister Marie, John and Ollie. Anne is survived by her loving family Barry (Tanyse), Barbara, David (Robin), Danny (Bev), Brenda (Mike), Donna (Martin), her brother Boris, eleven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Anne was known for the ability to see the good in all people.
