he recent decision to move some of Richmond’s organic waste away from Harvest Power is certainly a welcome one for me. A slight reprieve from that putrid smell will certainly be nice, but it is a Band-Aid that doesn’t address the elephant in the room: we still don’t know what the health effects are from breathing in these toxic fumes periodically.

It’s an alarming state of affairs when, in the beginning of October, I get off a plane from China, take one whiff of air and I’m wishing I was back there. I’ve spent weeks training in Beijing and Shanghai with less concern for my health than I have when I’m out on the streets of Richmond some days.

The days when we are plagued with I’ve spent weeks the aroma I can definitely see training in Beijing a decrease in and Shanghai with the quality of my training. I less concern for my was very much looking forward health than I have to 2017, getting when I’m out on the to spend more time at home, streets of Richmond in Richmond, some days. while I train to try and win a medal at the World Championships this summer, but I find myself wishing I was back in Flagstaff, or Canberra, or hell even Beijing some days!

What is incredibly disconcerting, and frankly criminal in my mind, is that Metro Vancouver has allowed a seven-fold increase in the amount of emissions that Harvest Power is allowed to emit without Vancouver Coastal Health examining the effects on our health! Makes me feel like a mouse on a wheel of some appalling science experiment, rather than a human with free will.

And the children; won’t somebody please think of the children. How are we supposed to be encouraging kids to get out and get their 60 minutes of daily physical activity if we can’t send them outside for fear of the harm these emissions may play on their developing respiratory systems. At a time when only nine per cent of Canadian kids get their daily recommended amounts of physical activity, the last thing we need is another excuse not to get outside.

So, while these new changes are nice, let’s keep asking the important questions and until we know we are safe, lets put a halt on Harvest.

Old law and new law applying to an old Will Last week, British Columbia’s Supreme Court handed down reasons for judgment in an interesting case called Pace Estate. In this case, the deceased met his spouse in 1993. They lived together with her two children and then married in 2002.

A few months before their marriage, they made Wills. In 2005, they separated and in 2009 divorced. The deceased then around 2013 met another person with whom he was apparently living when he died, in 2015.

The new spouse challenged the Will, arguing that under the former law (the Wills Act), the 2002 marriage revoked the Will. If successful, she would recover a large portion of the Estate under the rules of Intestacy. The Court however held that the Will was sufficiently clear that it had been made in contemplation of the deceased’s 2002 marriage, therefore was not revoked.

Let’s not compare apples to oranges.

Strata property owners might not see a significant increase in taxes this year, but the owners of “older” detached homes in West Richmond certainly will. And that is simply wrong.

For 2017, I will lose $575 in the government grant and an additional senior supplement of $275 while my basic unit tax will rise by three per cent.

That’s a lot of money!

And all of this because I own a 1,500 square-foot home built in 1960 that some non-resident investor wants for himself (to tear down, no less).

Public thanked City should drive Racist flyers condemned for interest in traffic safety ideas school district Dear Editor, On behalf of the Board of Education, I would like to express sincere thanks to our students, staff and parent community for continuing to ensure that the Richmond School District is one of the highest performing and most respected school districts in the province Together, we have gone through some difficult times, especially as we have had to consider the closure of schools due to declining enrollment. Our school closure process was designed to inform and engage, and we are truly grateful to all of you who came out to our open houses, accessed information on our Let’s Talk SD38 website, and attended other public meetings of the Board.

We believe that we now have a community that is well informed about the issues facing our school district, in particular the impact of declining enrollment and the need to seismically upgrade our schools, and that is passionate about supporting public education.

We thank you again for your engagement, and ask that you lend your voice to ensure that students in Richmond continue to receive the highest quality education in facilities that are safe, well maintained and appropriate for their learning.

Dear Editor, Richmond is no longer a little farming town with occasional traffic; therefore, I bring the following challenge to Richmond City Hall, the mayor and ICBC. Every traffic signal should have a dedicated left turn arrow, so motorists can turn left safely instead of gambling with oncoming traffic. Then, make it illegal to turn left except on an arrow, as is the case in U.S. cities. Does ICBC realize how many mid-intersection collisions this would reduce?

Some intersections have dedicated left turn arrows, but they are randomly turned on and off by city engineering.

Really, what nonsense is that?

We hear about ICBC complaining about rising repair costs to vehicles, what have they done in combination with city governments to reduce accidents?

Hardly any of the city bidirectional roads have reflective markers or newly drawn lane lines that would ensure motorists are not handicapped by darkness and rain; none of the curbs have yellow reflective paint to aid turns.

Richmond touts itself as a “world class city.” Why not make some effort to ensure the infrastructure truly reflects this.

This year, city hall passed a three per cent property tax increase, as the did last year and the year before that, and on and on. With all this revenue collected, what has city hall done?

The Richmond mayor is on record as looking at a driving distance pricing model for revenue. Before you do that, make driving safe and worthwhile in Richmond. In case you have forgotten, the citizens who live and drive to and from Richmond for work (last time I checked still the majority of the populous) do this because we like living in Richmond, but do not forget we are also voters!

Celebrations Begin!

Dear Editor, Canada will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of Confederation next year. During this time, it has transformed from a far-flung British and French colony to one of the most desirable countries to live in. Canada is well-known throughout the world as a very inclusive and welcoming country. Its emphasis on inclusion, mutual respect and cultural diversity is second to none. Canada was the first western country to officially adopt the policy of multiculturalism in 1971.

In addition to geographical, political and economic considerations, Canada’s policy of welcoming immigrants seems to be a major factor in making our country as one of the most desirable places to call home.

Richmond is considered to be one of the most multicultural communities in Canada. Its inhabitants, despite their various degrees of differences, get along well with each other. As a matter of fact, Richmond citizens consider its diversity as one of its major strengths. Perhaps it is this kind of positive coverage by the media that Richmond has attracted the attention of a very small but active racist element. Unfortunately, it always seems to be the negative act that makes news, outweighing the countless positive acts that occur daily in our lives.

Recently, Richmond’s ChineseCanadian community has been targeted by this unsavoury element.

Racist flyers aimed at the Chinese community and distributed to some households in Richmond have been roundly condemned by the city and community leadership.

Richmond Multicultural Community Services (RMCS) stands solidly with the community in condemning these flyers and the intent behind them.

RMCS has been serving Richmond for more than 30 years. It has always been in the forefront in promoting intercultural harmony, tolerance, inclusion and celebration.

RMCS is also pleased to be an active participant in the provincially sponsored program Organizing Against Racism and Hate (OARH).

Disability advocate: Give us access to jobs

national consultation into new accessibility laws should focus on getting more people with disabilities into the workplace.

That’s the view of Dave Thomson, community outreach coordinator for the Richmond Centre for Disability (RCD), who recently attended the federal government’s Vancouver leg of the country-wide consultation.

The government plans to pass an accessibility act to “make Canada more inclusive” and, until the end of February, 2017, it will be consulting Canadians about the legislation through a survey and in-person consultations.

However, Thomson this week told the Richmond News that the single-most important thing the government could do was make it easier for people with disabilities to become a regular fixture in the workplace.

“We really need to be focusing more on the employment side of things,” said Thomson.

“At the moment, if an employer has a certain amount of employees, they’re encouraged to have a percentage of workers with a disability. But there’s no meat to it; all that happens is that the employer is given a bit of help with raise-able desks and computers.

“If it was legislated that you had to have a certain amount of workers with disabilities, then, I believe, we would all benefit.”

Thomson, who has also filled in the consul-

tation’s online survey, said employees with disabilities could actually improve a business’s bottom line.

“People with disabilities think differently and see things differently, because they have to,” explained Thomson.

“That’s the way they live every day and that can add something new to a business, a fresh perspective that previously wasn’t considered.”

Thomson urged everyone, irrespective of having a disability, to fill in the survey before it closes at the end of February next year.

“You don’t have to have a disability, you could be a care-giver, a relative or just someone who believes in this,” he added.

“And if you don’t have access to a computer or need help in filling in the survey, you can come to our office at RCD.” In terms of the new legislation, the government is seeking the public’s ideas on: Whom the new legislation should cover; what accessibility issues and barriers it should address; how it could be monitored and enforced; how to raise accessibility awareness more generally and support organizations in improving accessibility.

Mediator called after airport workers pay talks fail Alan Campbell

federal mediator has been called in after contract talks between the union representing frontline airport workers and YVR broke down this week.

Approximately 300 staff — including emergency response, arrivals customer care, runway and baggage conveyor maintenance and passenger loading operations staff — are affected by the dispute which, according to their union, is over wage rates, variable hours of work, protection against harassment and bullying, sick leave and

medical benefits. The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC)/Union of Canadian Transportation Employees (UCTE) claims the Vancouver Airport Authority (VAA) isn’t willing to consider bringing its members’ wages in line with other Canadian airports.

Bargaining between the PSAC/UCTE and the VAA broke down this week and a federal conciliation officer has been called in to help get a new contract.

“We tabled a fair proposal that reflected the value of the work our members perform at the airport,” said Bob Jackson, PSAC regional executive vice president for B.C. “Unfortunately, management declined to

Jaywalking bylaw now in effect

I

t’s official — jaywalkers in Richmond will now face a $50 fine if they cross an arterial road outside of a crosswalk.

The City of Richmond’s traffic bylaw No. 5870 is now in effect, in a bid to enhance traffic safety, particularly for pedestrians.

Richmond city council unanimously passed the amendment in October, which includes pedestrians who cross at a dedicated crossing when not permitted to (ignoring the ‘Don’t Walk’ sign).

Other notable changes include: Drivers failing to yield when a crosswalk is occupied will now face a fine of $150 (up from $109); Motorcycle, moped and bicycle parking: Allows

the creation of dedicated on-street parking spots for the exclusive use of these vehicles at intersection corner clearances in the City Centre and Steveston Village areas; Temporary storage containers: Allows placement of temporary moving and storage bins on certain city roadways and boulevards by permit for a fee of $30 per day.

The definition of jaywalking had been removed from the provincial Motor Vehicle Act, meaning municipalities were required to impose their own bylaws.

According to the RCMP Traffic Section, as noted in a report to council in the fall, there have been 14 pedestrian fatalities in Richmond over the last five years. Four of those occurred outside of a crosswalk.

meaningfully discuss the issue. The (Vancouver) Airport Authority flat out refused to consider an increase that was in line with other airports.

“Instead, they gave our bargaining team an ultimatum and left us no choice but to apply for conciliation.”

Conciliation is expected to begin in January, with the union’s bargaining team hopeful a new contract can be achieved.

The union has, however, hinted that some labour disruption may happen in the spring.

“Vancouver Airport was recently named the best airport in the world, is highly profitable, and prides itself on being a good

corporate citizen,” said Dave Clark, UCTE regional vice president, Pacific.

“Our members are disappointed...particularly given the high cost of living in the Lower Mainland.”

Anne Murray, VAA’s vice president of marketing and communications, said the airport is still “committed to working with the PSAC to reach a mutually beneficial collective agreement.”

“The Airport Authority continues to bargain in good faith. We remain prepared to meet with the PSAC, now with the assistance of the federal conciliation officer, once appointed.”

t was a double celebration for Steveston D-Day veteran Len Rigg on Tuesday (Dec. 13). First of all, he turned 100. And second, he received the Legion of Honour medal from the Consul General of France, JeanChristophe Fleury, in a special ceremony surrounded by family and friends at ANAF Unit 284 on No. 1 Road, “It was a great day. Everything turned out better than I expected,” said Rigg. “It was nice to get the recognition. And to have so many people there, that was special.”

The medal is awarded in recognition of personal involvement in the liberation of France during the Second World War. Rigg’s family applied for the medal about two years ago after learning about a ceremony in Downtown Vancouver by the French and Dutch governments, who were recognizing other veterans who helped liberate their countries.

Rigg, a resident of the Maple Residences, was not yet 28 when he and hordes of other young servicemen were loaded in railway carriages and sent to the south coast of England and a mustering point, where they boarded boats to cross the English Channel and land on the heavily defended beaches of Normandy.

Rigg’s group was headed to Arromanchesles-Bains – code-named Gold Beach — where the occupying German forces were waiting to unleash the full fury of war on them.

was to help clear mines so the forces could land and get enough of a foothold to advance and break through the German defences.

Rigg was one of the fortunate ones to survive amid the harrowing losses suffered during the attack and he later made his way across Europe and was among the Allied Forces to take part in a victory parade in Berlin, once the war had ended.

“I am very proud and honoured of my father and to be able to see him turn 100 years of age, as well as being able to see him awarded the Legion of Honor from France,” said Kathleen Walters, one of Rigg’s five children.

Harvest Power CEO crippled by PR nightmare With company’s history, residents have lost faith in new promises GRAEMEWOOD Staff Reporter

t was clear last week at a public town hall meeting that whatever Harvest Power CEO Christian Kasper was selling, Richmond residents were not buying.

Kasper began his presentation to the roughly 150 furrow-browed, arms-crossed Richmondites by first noting his beleaguered east Richmond composting facility had, in the past two months, reduced its organic waste intake by 20 per cent over last year to mitigate the persistent foul odours that have wafted over the city and crippled the wellbeing of many.

He said the company was in the proposal stage of developing a better composting system and that it would be spending $5 million to fix the problem.

“The composting process is dynamic,” said Kasper. “It’s a challenging thing to get right. We need to get to the standard of no odours. And we need to replace the infrastructure to get to that level,” added Kasper.

Halfway through the meeting, real estate agent and long-time Richmond resident Arnold Shuchat launched the first challenge.

“If you want to come here in good faith, shut it down,” said Shuchat, who co-organized the Stop the Stink Facebook group and has led a group appeal of the facility’s new air quality permit issued by regional government Metro Vancouver.

But shutting down is not an option, according to Kasper. His company intends to continue operating in Richmond after it spent tens of millions of dollars to facilitate the composting of the region’s organic waste.

Harvest Power entered the organic waste fray in Metro Vancouver in 2009, when it purchased Fraser Richmond Soil and Fibre, which had largely handled landscaping waste since 1993. At the time, Harvest Power stated the takeover was an opportunity to demonstrate the company’s “industryleading technology.”

The following year, Harvest Power received $4 million from the federal Clean Energy Fund to help bankroll its high solids anaerobic digestion facility (the “energy garden”), touted as the company’s “best-in-class” technology to turn biogas into electricity. The federal grant was later complemented by a $2 million investment from Metro Vancouver for improvements at the site, which now operates under the name Harvest Fraser Richmond Organics Ltd. Fourteen months later, in February 2012, it dipped back into the taxpayers’ well, receiving a $1.5 million grant from the provincial BC Bioenergy Network to further the energy garden project.

“This energy garden will not only create B.C. jobs, it will provide a blueprint for other waste-to-energy projects in B.C., Canada and the U.S.,” said Minister of Energy and Mines Rich Coleman, at the time.

By August 2012, the first noticeable trickle of odour complaints were received by Metro Vancouver. The Richmond News reported that the company would be taking steps to improve its operations, after stating it had received an “unexpected” amount of waste.

bylaw whereby companies could face penalties up to $110,000, a figure considered to be “equivalent to the costs of responding to odour complaints in a typical year.”

The odour fee bylaw was scrapped by Metro Vancouver’s board in 2013 after industry stakeholders objected, claiming it contravened food waste reduction goals.

Fewer than 100 complaints were taken in 2012. In December of that year, Harvest Power’s regional vice-president Jeff Leech told the Globe and Mail the company had performed a self-audit of the facility, which was now taking in 190,000 tonnes of waste.

“We have also installed some additional odour control and modelling systems, so we can see where the wind is blowing and send our people to investigate complaints.

We have a guy we call our sniffer. When we get an odour complaint, he goes to the

area where the complaint came from and documents what he’s smelling, if anything.

We are totally committed to fixing this,” said Leech.

By June 2013, then CEO Paul Sellew assured the public the odours had disappeared when the $22.5 million energy garden facility came online, to power upwards of 900 homes under a BC Hydro agreement.

At this point, the regional government was fully on board, issuing the Massachusettsbased company an air quality permit, despite signals that the company was failing to deliver on its promises. Municipalities (whose council members make up Metro Vancouver’s board), would save roughly 50 per cent on garbage tipping fees. The company noted to the Globe, garbage disposal cost $107 per tonne, whereas Harvest Power was charging about half of that; it was recouping its fees

In 2014 it was a quiet year for the facility and it only received 105 complaints.

There was little local media coverage of its operations and the company continued to increase its waste intake and emissions.

Come 2015, to meet Metro Vancouver’s landfill diversion targets, the company began taking in canned goods, packaged meats and cruise ship organics, on top of the new stream of food waste from homes across the region. In June, 2015, the air quality permit expired, setting off a 15-month process to sign a new permit that was marred with increasing odour complaints. Come October of last year, the City of Richmond asked Metro Vancouver to limit organic waste disposal only to those facilities with a permit (last June the province announced regulatory changes to the Organic Matter Recycling Regulation requiring air quality permits for any new facility handling more than 5,000 tonnes of food waste or biosolids). The city made a series of requests to Harvest Power, as well, such as limiting waste intake, which had ballooned to 240,000 tonnes. It also suggested new odour dispersal equipment, such as a stack, be built (Kasper denies that will do any good). Last year ended with 205 complaints related to Harvest Power.

In 2016, however, complaints rose dramatically, particularly in August when the new air quality permit deadline was approaching and more media reports were being issued.

As more people became aware of what exactly was causing the odours across Richmond and the complaint hotline was widely publicized, complaints for 2016 skyrocketed to roughly 2,500, to date.

Resident Jim Tinson said Dawar “overstepped her boundaries” in declaring Metro Vancouver has the tools to address the problem (claiming they’ve failed to do so for four years). He also challenged Dawar’s reliance on studies of compost facilities.

Notably, that the last study on air emissions from the facility was commissioned

by Harvest Power itself, according to Metro Vancouver.

Levelton consultanting firm did study odours across Richmond in 2013, for the government. It concluded upgrades to the energy garden “should decrease the geographic extent and magnitude of the odour impacts.”

Metro Vancouver was unable to confirm what specific emissions testing has been done, although a spokesperson said there are 29 air quality monitoring stations across the region.

“Who is measuring the stink clouds that are coming across Richmond? Some of these

stink clouds are so severe you run across the parking lot because your body’s telling you to get out. Nobody is monitoring that,” insisted Tinson, who was upset he and other residents didn’t have a chance to address Dawar with questions at the council meeting.

Aside from health concerns, many residents are upset the City of Richmond is not providing details about its contract with Harvest Power. People also want to know what the city could do to exert more control over the situation, including what its stated position is in the appeal process.

City spokesperson Ted Townsend said the details of the contract cannot be made public. But, there may be some recourse available to the city, if the odours persist.

“The city has requested that Harvest Power take steps to remedy odours from the facility within 90 days, per its service agreement.

We will be closely monitoring their actions to determine if they are in compliance with the service agreement,” said Townsend.

By Jan.1, the new permit enforcement measures come into effect, despite Harvest Power’s appeal to the Environmental Appeal Board.

Vancouver Coastal Health says if you are having difficulty breathing and/or the odour is affecting your ability to be outside, you should consult a doctor.

have been home sick for two weeks with pneumonia. Strange way to start a fashion column I know, but being home has confirmed my suspicions about the retail experience vs. the online shopping experience.

Here’s the thing, if you need to pick up some type of doodad for the kitchen (say de-boning tweezers for fish) and it’s something you know you need, by all means go online, find them, spend your ten dollars and be done with it. But, alas, if you are in the market for anything fashion related, in particular a gift, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT go online to do so. Go into the stores, have conversations with the owners or sales people, and you will be far better served.

The thing is, shopping should be an experience. You may know your significant other loves dresses or has been looking for a type of pants, but that is the extent of your knowledge. A good sales person will take that information and be able to inform you of the current trends, most likely be able to size it properly based on a photograph on your phone and basically ensure your shopping is seamless, easy and, hey, even fun.

It’s their job to help you and know about fashion trends for this season and what’s coming up next, sizing, what the best fabrics/materials are, etc.

Did you know that slim pants are in fashion right now? Well they are, you know how I know? Because a shop manager told me so, and it’s her job to know — plus, I saw actress Emma Stone wearing some on a talk show yesterday.

I was in New York recently and a salesman at Saks spent 30 minutes selling me on the benefits of a particular tie. It was fantastic. By the end of it, I knew all about his family, why he doesn’t wear as much jewelry as he used to and that he was also an ordained minister — and now I have a cool tie.

With all that said, what are some of the hot fashion items your lady would love to see under the tree this Christmas?

C

hristmas is rapidly approaching and during this season of merry, here are three wines to help you celebrate in style.

The first two come from Alsace, the region which borders Germany and has changed hands many times in the last 150 years. As a result, the wines of Alsace are usually German wines, such as Riesling and Pinot Gris made in a French style, usually bone dry. Like German wines, they come in tall bottles.

Ninety-per cent of wines from Alsace are white, like its neighbour’s wines to the east. Northern vineyards don’t receive the amount of heat to produce hearty red wines.

But they do make delicious whites, which have plenty of

acid to pair well with so many foods.

The Furst 2012 Pinot Gris ($24.99) is an off-dry wine with a complex character of honeysuckle, quince, ripe pear, some orange rind, and spice. B.C. makes many tasty Pinot Gris but few have these layers of flavour The Furst does.

It displays a rich texture with excellent balance between the ample fruit and the acidity. Unlike many Alsatian table wines, The Furst is off-dry which makes it a treat to savour on its own. But it’s also well suited for Alsatian dishes, such as Quiche Lorraine and soft cheeses, such as Alsace’s Munster.

Next is an Alsatian white that’s been produced since the 13th century, the Gustave Lorentz 2008 Riesling Grand Cru Altenberg de Bergheim ($39.99). Despite being eight years old, this white is stunning and virile.

Its appearance is a gorgeous golden yellow. There is the signature bouquet of a first class Riesling: lime zest and a hint

Here is a gastronomic wine par excellence thanks to its lively personality. As they say in Strasbourg, Alsace, “Très magnifique” or “Sehr Gut.” Our final wine is another cru but this time from Beaujolais.

The very best Beaujolais are produced in the 10 Crus villages.

They don’t have Beaujolais on the label, just the village name such as Fleurie, Moulin-a-Vent, and Brouilly.

Named after an extinct volcano, Mont Brouilly, Brouilly is the largest cru appellation in Beaujolais. The Chateau de Pierreux Brouilly ($15.99) is made from old vine Gamay grapes sustainably grown. It is produced like a regular Beaujolais with carbonic maceration which imparts fruitiness but also like a red Burgundy which gives it tannins and structure.

The Chateau de Pierreux’s deep burgundian colour is enchanting. There’s a black cherry bouquet to enjoy with the rich flavour of cherries, plums, blackberries, and black currants. It’s smooth with a structured mouth-feel. Delicious!

Kids spreading that festive feeling - online

Internet safety talks lead to RCMP, students teaming up to send goodwill to homeless ALANCAMPBELL Staff Reporter

tanding out in front of 40 or so Grade 5 to 7 students, Cpl. Kevin Krygier asked his attentive audience to hit him with some social media platforms, other than Facebook.

Within two minutes, the Gilmore elementary kids had rattled off Snapchat, Pinterest, Skype, YouTube, Twitter, Google Plus, Tumbler and Reddit.

Suffice to say, kids these days, especially it would seem the ones out in West Richmond, are well up to speed on using the Internet to socialize and, dare we say, educate themselves on the ways of the world.

But that didn’t stop Richmond RCMP’s Krygier, of the Crime Prevention Unit, and Const. Jason Pickering, of the Youth Section, teaching the students a thing or two about Internet safety during a two-week program. “(During the program), we posted a picture online to see how far it could reach,” Krygier told the News.

“In four days, 10,000 people had seen it across 12 countries. I think that came as quite a surprise to some of them.

“We wanted to teach them about the dangers of the Internet. Const. Pickering did lecture about Internet safety; the positives and negatives; we talked about the different devices and the risks.

“We asked them to think about how many ‘friends’ online really are their friends.”

As well as conversations about cyber-bullying and posting images and photos online, Krygier said they also wanted the students to see the positive side of social media and devices and challenged them to do a project that gave them “something real to work on.”

The officers then partnered with Ignite The Warmth, an eight-strong group — the majority of whom are StevestonLondon alumni — with a mission to bring awareness to and help alleviate homelessness, particularly on the Downtown Eastside (DTES).

“The kids used iPads to make digital greeting cards, sent them to Ignite The Warmth and they were then printed out and made into actual greeting cards,” explained Krygier.

“Those cards will then become part of the Ignite The Warmth packages being handed out to the homeless in the Downtown Eastside next week.”

Gilmore elementary principal Mark David said teachers were already talking to the students about online safety, so the program with the RCMP was very timely.

“Kids are starting to use technology at a very early age and we wanted to instill in them good habits and teach them to be good leaders,” said David.

The school, added David, will be partnering again with the police in February, this time running a presentation for parents, with respect to keeping their kids safe while they’re online.

rowing up in a small, Ohio town, Dr. Sandra Dunn didn’t just one day wake up and decide she wanted to be a molecular biologist.

True, she was so keen at learning about science that her grandparents suggested she go to medical school.

But all a young Dunn knew was that she wanted to help people.

“I came from pretty humble beginnings.

My parents were not scientists,” said Dunn.

“They were not college grads. But I always loved science. And I honestly thought that I could help more people if became a researcher.

“I knew from an early age that it was a pebble in a pond situation. If I could develop the skills to be someone who could, first of all, identify a key component of cancer, and then develop a drug to fight it, I could help a lot of people, more than if I became a doctor.

“That was a young me, thinking quite naively, but I am still living the dream.”

Today, Dunn is founder and CEO of Richmond-based Phoenix Molecular Designs which is working on a novel way of targeting why cancer cells grow and spread in a bid to develop a drug that will stop their growth.

It has earned the small, five-employee firm in east Richmond a top-10 finalist spot in the Best Innovation category for the annual Small Business BC Awards, which will be handed out in Downtown Vancouver on Feb. 23.

After doing her training and residency in the U.S. and then spending 14 years as a professor at UBC, Dunn decided to enter the business world and Phoenix was incorporated in 2012. Three years later, she decided to take on the full-time role of CEO.

“I was really inspired to help,” she said, adding a good dose of that was derived through personal loss.

“I was good friends with Jasbinder Sanghera who built SignalChem, another Richmond-based molecular biology firm that assisted basic research and drug discovery.

And Jasbinder told me that when I was ready to start my own company, ‘Come and see me and I’ll help you.’”

With that encouragement and coaching from Sanghera, Dunn decided to make the switch from academia and moved Phoenix in beside SignalChem, where they became virtual partners.

But the good working relationship took a sad turn when Sanghera, who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer years earlier, became ill and passed away.

“He was terminally ill and I actually rushed to his bedside and n Sandra Dunn. missed him by just a Photo submitted few moments,” Dunn said, tearing up. “It’s hard to even talk about it now, two years later. But it made me motivated to try and help people with cancer, and feel that my life’s work in this area has been important.”

What makes the approach of Dunn’s company unique is the way it targets enzymes that help fuel cancer cell growth and promote their spread to different parts of the body.

The key, Dunn said, is finding the enzyme responsible for the growth of each cancer type and then blocking its activity. That way, treatment can be tailored to battle specific types of the disease. And the one Phoenix is targeting is an aggressive form called triple Let ’s fi gur e out th e

negative breast cancer (TNBC) that affects about 400,000 women globally each year.

“What we like about our particular drug target is that it’s revolutionary. No one else has produced an inhibitor like this,” Dunn said, adding much of the problem in battling TNBC rests with antiquated chemotherapy drugs that attack all cells in a body in a bid wipe out cancer along the way.

“That’s why your hair falls out and you throw up,” Dunn said, “whereas the type of inhibitor we’re working on does not have those properties. It’s only aimed at the cancer cells.”

Dunn described the process as essentially unplugging a cancer cell’s energy supply.

“And when their lights go off, they die,” she said. “And it doesn’t just slow down the cells, because if you do that, they are likely to come back. But if you can actively engage in killing the cells, then you can’t bring them back to life.”

Clinical trials for the drug are set to begin in 2018.

“The next year will be focused on further assessing the safety of the drug. So, 2018 is not that far off,” Dunn said.

Helping speed up the process for getting the drug to market is a shortened time for approving its use, thanks to its classification as an “orphan drug.”

That means the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will allow expedited clinical trials for a drug to treat a rare disease or condition.

And that can mean a reduction from eight to five years in trial time.

“The idea is that when you have a high medical need, it’s recognized that you need to move quickly,” Dunn said. “It’s a global problem, let’s face it. Breast cancer is the number one cause of death in women worldwide. So, that in itself make us appreciate how important the work here is, on a local and global scale.”

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) inched a little closer to the 22 million passenger mark for 2016 by reaching a new milestone figure over the first 10 months of this year. During the January to October stretch, YVR welcomed 18.8 million passengers, which represents a year-over-year growth of 9.5 per cent. Much of the increase, according to YVR officials, is owed to in Air Canada’s expansion of its trans-Pacific hub out of YVR, which represents approximately 50 per cent of passengers at YVR and service to more than 55 destinations worldwide.

Between January and October, Air Canada reached a record high for capacity with 10.9 million seats — an increase of 12 per cent over the same period in 2015. The airline’s international sector, which includes the Asia Pacific, Europe and Latin America, led the growth with a 22.6 per cent increase. Since 2015, Air Canada introduced eight new services to YVR: Osaka, Cancun, San Jose, San Diego, Chicago, Dublin, Brisbane and Delhi. This growth continues in 2017 with five new destinations scheduled to launch, including Taipei, Nagoya, Frankfurt, London, Gatwick and Dallas.

he McMath Wildcats are putting their doubters in place and it’s a familiar face to Richmond basketball helping guide the upstart team.

The Wildcats are coming off a magical season that concluded with a loss to Brookswood in the B.C. “AAA” championship game last March. An outstanding senior trio of Jessica Jones (SFU), Bobbi-Jo Colburn (Calgary) and Jessica Zawada (Fraser Valley) have all takien their careers to the university level. The rebuilding job became even more extensive when Grade 11 guard Lyric Custodio transferred to Brookswood.

McMath seemed destined to try and defend its Richmond championship and nothing more. At least so it seemed.

The Steveston school was no longer on the ‘A’ list for high-profile tournaments but did get a late invite to last weekend’s Victoria Police Classic when another team dropped out.

The Wildcats served notice by upsetting No. 8 Claremont (53-52) and honourable mention Heritage Woods (61-54). They also hung tough with No. 5 Lord Tweedsmuir (76-53) and defeated top 10 ‘AA’ ranked St. Michael’s University (68-42).

They now carry a 10-2 record into the holiday break and have earned honourable mention status in the latest provincial “AAA” rankings.

The legendary Anne Gillrie-Carre is back to guide the Wildcats but was looking for some help after Paul Jones moved on. In stepped Chris Kennedy who is coaching high school ball in his hometown again for the first time since taking the McRoberts Strikers senior boys team to the 2001 AA provincials. The one-time Richmond teacher is now Superin-

tendent of Schools/CEO in West Vancouver.

Kennedy is getting the chance to coach his daughter Elizabeth, who remarkably, aged up as a Grade 8 to have a supporting role in last year’s memorable run. The Wildcats staff also includes Carre’s daughter Kira, who is teaching in Richmond, and another parent volunteer — Steve Flynn.

“I’m super busy with work and can’t make everything and Anne is too,” explained Kennedy. “It’s a nice combo that way. You feel lucky to have a chance to coach your daughter coming through high school. I’m super appreciative of the opportunity and the school has been great in letting me do it when my schedule allows.”

Kennedy only has to look at his roster to be reminded of his past experience here. Grade 11 Jessica Porter’s adopted brother is Atnas Maeko — the former Richmond High star who Kennedy coached on the provincial team back in 1999.

“It’s all Richmond. Everyone is connected,” smiled Kennedy. “We have lots of good multisport athletes on this team that get into the gym a lot.”

Abby Zawada is proving she is more than capable picking up the scoring slack created by the departure of her sister Jessica and others. The Grade 11 standout averaged over 30 points per game in Victoria. She already has a wealth of experience at the senior level, joining the team three years ago.

Senior guard Mahara Gibson-Zeinoun also saw some playing time last season. Grade 11 Maratha Melaku provides some scoring punch too.

On the Island, the Wildcats starting five featured four Grade 11s and a Grade 9.

“It’s kind of like Abby and her friends,” laughed Kennedy. “I thought we were going to do better than people think but this is way better. We will be competitive to make

(provincials) and I didn’t think that would be a possibility.

“It was more like a two-year plan with this

group where we will give the top teams a run next year. This is going great so far and it feels good to suddenly see the girls on the radar.”

esley Chiu made quite an impression at his first-ever Skate Canada Challenge.

The 11-year-old member of the Connaught Skate Club travelled to Pierrefonds, QC with modest expectations. Even though he captured gold at the B.C. Yukon Sectionals to earn his trip back east, Chiu was one of the youngest competitors in the Pre-Novice Men’s Division.

within reach when Chiu was sitting ninth out of 42 skaters following the short program.

Instead, the Grade 6 student at Richmond Christian put together the performance of his young life.

Chiu skated a near flawless long program to earn the top score (62.61) of all skaters and jump all the way into the silver medal position behind Alberta’s Brian Chiem.

said his proud coach Keegan Murphy. “Because they skate in reserve order, we didn’t know exactly how well he had done.

We just sat there and watched him move up the standings, one by one, after the skaters in front of him had finished.”

Chiu’s technical ability is ahead of skaters his age and he showed Murphy in Quebec just how tough mentally he is as well.

long program where this time he knew he had to make up ground so it was interesting to see how he would handle it,” added Murphy. “He kept his nerves in check and rose to the challenge big time. For an 11-year-old going up against skaters who were typically two to three years older than him, it was amazing to see.”

Chiu’s result was the best for a Connaught skater in Pre-Novice Men’s since Mitchell Gordon won the event back in 2010 on the eve of his 14th birthday.

Next for the promising young skater is moving up to the Novice Men’s level for the 2017 competitive season.

Tinker Minds a 'MAKER SPACE' at Gilmore

By Lauren Kramer Gilmore Elementary Grade 3 teacher Sean Aldcroft was worried no-one would be interested when he started Tinker Minds, a new group at the school that meets Tuesdays during lunch.

“It’s a maker space where the basic premise is to bring something interesting you want to take apart or put together,” he explained.

“And we weren’t sure how things would go, considering we were starting with a bag of wool, half a dozen screwdrivers, a clapped out VCR and some glue guns!”

“Two young ladies pulled out the glue guns, some cardboard and tinted acetate and made tinted visors that make their users look like Robocop Junior,” he said. “The VCR has been eviscerated by a small army of eager screwdriver wielders, and a hair dryer, immersion blender and two old CD players are following suit!”

Interest was so strong, Aldcroft had to ask students to bring their own tools, so there would be enough screwdrivers and pliers for everyone.

Not everyone is taking electrical items apart. Tinker Minds also includes a knitting club, where a dozen children and some teachers are knitting, learning to knit and teaching others how to knit. One of the keenest knitters is Gilmore’s vice-principal, who learned to cast on and do a couple of stitches.

Club adds NUMERICAL enrichment

By Lauren Kramer For Fred Harwood, who taught mathemaecs at McRoberts secondary for 22 years before reering in 2014, reerement meant a second master’s degree in educaeon, with a focus on numeracy. Part of his research involved visieng elementary schools and examining how mathemaecs is understood and taught.

And those visits inspired him to create a math club at Diefenbaker elementary with teachers Cori Anderson and Ingrid Veilleux.

The weekly, hour-long session attracts about 10 students, most of them in Grades 6 and 7.

“The club’s popularity and existence shows there’s an appeete for enriched mathemaecs in a fun and challenging atmosphere beyond the classroom,” said Anderson.

Harwood said the Diefenbaker Math Club’s objeceve is to provide enrichment opportuniees for students who are interested in math. “We’ve been working on visualizaeon of math, paperns and generalizing patterns, and the last few weeks we’ve been working in bases other than base 10, i.e. base two and three,” he explained. “That’s recreaeng mathemaecs but with a whole new number system, and it gives students the opportunity to think more deeply about basic math.”

Angela Pan, a Grade 7 student at Diefenbaker, said she likes the math queseons posed in the club.

“They’re more dihcult and require you to think more about them,” she reqected. “I’ve learned binary, paperns and algebraic expressions, and I love how you have to think to solve the problems, and that there’s mostly always an answer.”

Most of the apendees are good at math, he conceded. But being a gimed mathemaecian is not a prerequisite to joining the club.

Fellow math club member Victor Lim, also in Grade 7, said he apends because he wants to challenge himself in math.

For Anderson and Veilleux, the club olers a form of professional development. “We get lots of ideas that we can take back to our classrooms,” Anderson said. For Harwood, it’s an opportunity to give back — even

Grade 11 McMath student Sara Hudon has always been interested in law enforcement, but didn’t know how she’d go about becoming a police ohcer — unel she was accepted to the RCMP Youth Academy. The eight-week course, which is in its fourth consecueve year, is open to students in Grades 10 through 12 and is highly compeeeve, with 54 applicants compeeng for the 37 spaces in the program.

“Students had to write an essay explaining why they wanted to pursue a career as a krst responder,” said Const. Adam Carmichael, youth ohcer with the Richmond RCMP. “We’re not just looking for RCMP members, we’re looking for military, BC Ambulance, Fire and Rescue and others, too. We accepted 13 girls and 24 boys, which reqects the women-to-men raeo in the RCMP right now.”

Youth academy parecipants received a variety of presentaeons from dilerent krst responders. A tacecal troop sergeant with the riot team allowed them to try on her gear. A plain clothes inspector discussed human trahcking and undercover

work, while the canine unit described working with a dog and laboratory services explained urine analysis. Students got to take their own kngerprints, handle moulds used in forensic invesegaeons and learned some of the drill movements that RCMP ohcers are taught at depot.

There were up to three presenters each week in the three-hour sessions, and the kids were fully engaged, Carmichael said.

The 37 candidates selected were “strongly moevated individuals,” he added. “I wish youth academy had been around when I was a kid — because I would have joined the force earlier had I been involved in something like this at school.”

Hudon described youth academy as a once-in-a-lifeeme experience that gives students a chance to see what’s out there. “It isn’t all police cars and sirens,” she said. The presenters treated us as young adults, not children, which I really appreciated. This course has taught me so much, and I’d recommend it to anyone who is even just considering law enforcement. It gave me a preview of what my life could be!”

Enhancing FRENCH IDENTITY through arts

By Lauren Kramer If there’s one thing the French immersion program at McRoberts secondary is lacking, it’s visibility. “In the physical plant of the school, there’s liple evidence that we’re in the building,” said Julie Anne Mainville, head of the school’s French immersion department. “Our sign outside is bilingual, but that’s about it.”

Determined to change that, Mainville and her fellow teachers gave students a project: to think about who they are as Francophone learners in the school, and to develop a deknieon of their idenety.

The students were challenged to develop a visual representaeon of that idenety for a school contest, and amer teachers selected the top designs, students got to vote on the best design.

They spent four, full days teaching French Immersion students how to assemble the piece of art. Students worked collaboraevely in French under the guidance of the arests during their French class blocks.

Grade 9 student Emily Gong created the winning design that includes symbols of McRoberts, community, French culture, muleculturalism and Canada. It was expanded into a 36 square-foot mosaic to be permanently displayed in the McRoberts school library.

One arest described how he overcame his experience of bullying by standing up and confroneng his bully, while another described how his peers at school were taking advantage of him at a eme when his home life was dihcult. A third was “Joe Popular at school,” Mainville said. “He was the good looking, athleec, perfect guy who was always genng into mischief at school. He spoke about how it became dihcult as he grew into an adult to overcome the antudes people had about him being irresponsible.”

Mainville had long wanted to expose the students to a musical performance, but funding made it challenging. With QW4RTZ, she was able to partner with the Centre Culturel Francophone de Vancouver and share the expenses of bringing the group to perform in Richmond.

’m an educator with a Master’s Degree in Education and I’m a Doctoral Candidate in Education at the University of British Columbia, with a focus on early childhood and children literacy development,” says Cindy, one of the three ‘Coffee Moms’ and co-creator of the Appleseed Children’s Playhouse along with partners Ellen and Ariel. “I’m responsible for shaping the philosophy of the Playhouse and implementing that philosophy through the design of programs.”

The Playhouse’s programs are designed to focus on the holistic development of children, including the essentials such as a child’s fine motor skills, cognitive thinking development, and social emotional skills, in addition to interacting appropriately with other children and the facilitators.

“Usually playgrounds for children have very bright colours, rounded soft corners on equipment, and a defined way in, around, and out,” says Cindy. “Our Playhouse is very different.

It’s a very simple environment, and very calming. The kids can enter wherever they like. There’s no one way to interact with the play structures, so every time they come in, they discover different ways of interacting.”

Cindy and her Coffee Mom friends took inspiration from the European design of play centres.

“Based on that design concept,” Cindy explains, “we decided that we needed to custom build something along the lines of what is good for children and their learning, rather than what the parents think is attractive. Too many bright colours or commercial toys can be very distracting for children. We wanted something a little more open-ended that allowed the kids to explore themselves.”

When the Playhouse facilitators design their programs, they keep this exploration philosophy in mind.

“We don’t want our facilitators to simply transmit knowledge to the children,” Cindy says. “We ask them to generate enquiries and questions from the children. They use songs, movement, and our selective educational toys to develop the child’s social and emotional skills. The syllabus is not fixed; our facilitators create their programs together with the children.”

Throughout the day, the Appleseed Playhouse offers different programs on its opened edu-playground rather than putting children in a closed classroom setting, all aimed at stimulating the child’s development in the areas of creative, music, movement, and social and emotional development.

“When you come here, you don’t just have a music and dance class,” Cindy says. “In our “Freeflow Fundom” program, for example, children are encouraged to invent their own moves, collaborate and share inspirations with others and create art collages out of dance, sound and body imagery. Our facilitators may prepare a ‘story’, and with the children they will learn how to bring the story to life through their bodies, voices, and possibly simple musical instruments and pieces of fabric.

By participating in our play activities, children are not only learning the core skills, but they think outside the box, interact and develop new inspirations.

dents in Grades nine through 12. Yasui, who has been at the helm of the Japanese program at Richmond secondary since 2002, also heads the 50-member Japan Club. The club’s focus changes depending on what its members are interested in doing from one year to the next. This year, the club members were cooking, and doing arts and crams, she said.

The school’s Japan Fair included booths with games, displays, demonstraeons and performances, with each class responsible for punng together a display or booth. Japanese students in Grades 11 and 12 conducted demonstraeons or performances, and the Mario and Luigi performance by the Grade 12 students was warmly received.

WHITEBOARDS spark student collaboration

By Lauren Kramer Distracted students are the bane of every teacher — but at Mitchell elementary, Grade 4-5 teacher Jessica Wang is winning the baple against distraceon. She owes that victory to two things. The krst is whiteboard material that has been placed on the surface of her school tables, and the second is a basket of communal supplies.

“The whiteboard table reduces the amount of paper we use,” she explained.

“Students take photographs of the work they do on the whiteboards and post it on their digital porfolios to create a record of it. The whiteboards enable a lot more collaboraeon between the children, as well as more responsibility, and when it’s eme to get things done, they can do it right away on the whiteboard.”

The whiteboards on her 24 students’ tables add immediacy to any tasks being performed in the classroom, she added. “When kids ask each other for help, they omen get distracted. With the whiteboard, they can help each other on

the spot. This way, they can work it out together, right away, instead of walking around, genng a scrap piece of paper, and explaining what they need help with, instead of doing. Here they pracese the strategy, do the strategy and move on in their work.”

Baskets of communal supplies have also helped students stay organized and focused. Before the baskets were introduced, Wang found children would spend 10 minutes walking around looking for a pencil. Or they would come to school with three pencil cases klled with markers and waste eme looking for things. “Now they come to class where there is a communal basket on each table containing four pencils, four glue secks, four erasers.

This way they have all the materials they need in front of them, and when they’re knished with it, they return everything.”

Having the whiteboards available has also reduced the number of accessories they need in the classroom, she reqected.

“The whiteboards remove the distraceons, help kids get ready to learn and help them to self-regulate.”

One area where she’s noeced a substaneal dilerence is in the amount of collaboraeon occurring between students in the classroom. “The kids seem to go to each other for a lot more help, or to talk problems through, because they love to write on the tables,” she said.
