I

have a teenage daughter who, like most, spends a crazy amount of time on social media. To think there are sexual predators out there trolling chat sites, hoping to lure her, or any of her friends, into a sick, exploitative relationship is somewhat terrifying.

I have faith in her judgement, and I know the chances of something really nasty happening are relatively small.

But I also know these guys can be cunning, and bad things do happen.

It’s also disturbing to learn how difficult it is to catch online perpetrators. I remember being shocked at how long it took to name a suspect in the Amanda Todd case. Although someone was eventually charged, it was only after the 15-year-old girl took her own life.

And all those haters who piled on with their relentless cyber bullying never did see justice.

Point being, it’s understandable some people want to step in and do something. Enter: Calgary resident Dawson Raymond, who founded Creep Catchers in September, 2015.

Just one year later, the organization has 23 chapters across Canada.

The group poses online as children to bait would-be predators, then sets up a sting, which members record and immediately post online in an effort to “name and shame.”

Now, Richmond has its own group called Creep Hunters, which has the same MO, but seems somewhat more restrained. It’s quicker to involve police and claims it only posts a sting with police permission — although, they have plenty of stings posted on their website.

While intentions may be good, there are too many problems with this kind of vigilantism.

The first is public safety. Who knows how a person is going to react when they realize they’re being outted as a predator.

And then there’s the issue of mistaken identity. After one Creep Catcher sting was posted online, the “creep” was incorrectly named and an innocent man was vilified.

Finally, working outside the law like this could jeopardize an ongoing investigation into a much larger child pornography ring.

In the Richmond case, we have a man who vows to cut himself to prove his love for what he thinks is his new girlfriend. He suspects he’s being set up, yet meets her anyway. He “talks in circles,” begins crying when he’s confronted and calls his family. To parade this as some great victory in the fight against child exploitation is questionable.

These “hunters” say they can do things police can’t because they’re not subject to the same restrictions. True, but those restrictions are there for a reason. It’s called accountability. Vigilantes have no training, no oversight and are not privy to background information.

Finally, there’s just something creepy about public humiliation as a form of justice.

I say supply tips, and leave the rest to the professionals.

The City is undertaking an update to its Sign Bylaw No. 5560 and at this time is seeking public feedback on the proposed changes. From November 29, 2016–December 11, 2016 there are several ways to provide feedback:

The above article, in my opinion, would benefit from some corrections and additions: a) The bird in the photograph is not an Anna’s Hummingbird, but is more likely a Rufous or Allen’s Hummingbird. According to Sheri Williamson, author of the Peterson Field Guide to Hummingbirds and the person I trust most with identification, Anna’s never have rufous coloration in their plumage, as the one pictured clearly does (on its flanks). b) Near the end of the article, the author says she uses a 1:2 ratio of sugar to water in the winter.

We recommend against this. The highest sugar content I have ever seen measured in a hummingbird flower is 1:2.6; the highest we recommend is 1:3. The problem, according to the late Professor William A. Calder, is that a hummer needs enough water with the sugar to metabolize the sugar.

Inter-cultural exchange and routine commerce requires a common language for cohesion.

The onus is on newcomers to Canada, be they citizens, permanent residents, or neither, to adapt by using one of our official languages while we adopt.

If a Canadian-Born-Chinese (CBC), who reads and writes one of the official languages of Canada, seeks employment here where they grew up, are they to be disadvantaged in a hiring decision because they can’t speak Mandarin, or Cantonese (or neither)?

Will they be driven away from their local family network because they can’t read and write Chinese, or another foreign language.

As Canada, strong and free, turns 150 in 2017, every ordinary Canadian ought to make an effort to seek out and understand the demographic data, to be objective, to expect reciprocity, to seek pragmatic solutions based on data — not ideology or vested interests.

In our existing CPP system, a person’s pension amount is calculated based on many factors, namely the number of years worked and the amount contributed into the CPP. In the “old” system, women did not lose in their pension amounts by having taken some time away from work to (for example) raise children, provided they did not miss too many years from the workforce.

However, in the new system, recently fully agreed to, there is a “CPP dropout clause” under which it is not clear how women’s entitlement may change if they leave the workforce to raise children.

The dropout clause, which MPs have been debating, requires 40 years of contributions for someone to receive the maximum CPP benefits.

Dear Editor, Last month, I was in a local retail queue.

To reduce wait time and improve the customer experience, a customer sales representative (CSR) politely moved down the line to ask a simple question in an effort to divert certain routine transactions to one of the many idle self-serve kiosks.

After asking me, the CSR moved along to the middle-aged customer behind me and asked that customer if the customer was doing a cash transaction.

The customer responded to the CSR’s question in Cantonese Chinese (not Mandarin Chinese).

The CSR said, “I don’t speak Chinese,” and the customer (who understood enough of the question and the CSR’s reply) immediately and crossly dismissed the CSR with a back-handed swipe of her arm (no physical contact) and a verbal derogation.

The CSR had to fetch a Cantonese-speaking employee to determine the nature of the customer’s business that day.

The CSR was a recent immigrant from Vietnam who spoke English well. She was adapting to her adoptive country.

Super-rich concentrations like that suggested by the author may make it more convenient by lowering the freezing point, but it is probably not doing the hummingbird a favour, because it lacks sufficient water.

I would like to suggest a simpler way to deal with temperatures low enough to freeze a feeder (usually 27°F or lower): keep two feeders ready, one inside and one outside. Then, first thing in the morning you can swap them — no need to run hot water over the frozen one.

The photo with the article, by the way, is superb. I wish our crocosmia looked as good in the winter!

Homeowners, hold Province failed to make tunnel safer onto your wallets Dear Editor, The Province of B.C. initiated that Delta bring forward a report which shows the George Massey Tunnel as being unsafe and dangerous, furthering its argument for its replacement.

As the son of the late George Massey, after whom the tunnel was named, I find it difficult to argue against the fact that the government has failed to make the tunnel safer.

1) The fact is that this is an unlined tunnel with a normal concrete surface finish, rather than being tile-lined to better reflect the light and make the tunnel safer. This could and should have been done from the time it was first built some 57 years ago and would have increased the safety and flow of traffic by 35 per cent.

2) They have failed to monitor and fine illegal lane changes by trucks and vehicles within the tunnel.

3) They have failed to place notices to vehicles well in advance of the tunnel that they must have all their lights on before entering the tunnel for safety reasons.

4) They have failed to institute a policy that many major cities around the world of banning large transport and container trucks during rush hour at all major river crossings.

Instead, Port of Vancouver has increased the number of container trucks during rush hour to further their argument that a new, highlevel bridge was necessary and the

roperty taxes are set to rise three per cent after a majority of city councillors tentatively approved the City of Richmond’s 2017 operating budget.

Initially, director of finance Jerry Chong proposed a 3.5 per cent increase, but Mayor Malcolm Brodie suggested taking $1 million out of a $13 million rainy day fund that is open to council’s discretion, for one-time expenditures.

The tax hike is expected to impact owners of detached homes more than condo and townhouse owners, who will likely see a decrease in their overall tax bill due to some drastic changes in how property values will be assessed next year.

BC Assessment announced Tuesday that the value of detached homes in Richmond will be assessed 30-50 per cent greater than this year, while strata properties will go up 1530 per cent, on average.

The higher assessments are to reflect the real-time sale prices of properties in the city.

For instance, properties with older homes in West Richmond typically sell for at least $1.8 million, whereas they are typically assessed at around $1.2 million.

The total tax bill is dependent on the value of one’s home relative to other properties in the city. Ergo, if your property remains at

the same value while other properties are assessed higher, your bill will be reduced, as the same mill rate is applied to (or multiplied by) assessed values.

“It is important to understand that large increases in property assessments do not automatically translate into a corresponding increase in property taxes,” said Assessor Jason Grant.

For instance, last year, most strata property owners in Richmond actually saw their tax bills decline. The changes have resulted in calls for the provincial government to increase the tax-reducing Homeowner Grant, which is applied on a sliding scale for homes valued at $1.3 million or less. The new assessments are expected to push the vast majority of detached home properties over this threshold.

Richmond’s tax increase is largely a result of municipal costs outstripping new tax growth (2.24 per cent to 1.36 per cent, respectively) plus additional policing costs (0.62 per cent).

The city has $38 million in the capital building reserves. It has $664 million in net assets, including $461 million in overall reserves.

Raking in $203 million in property taxes, Richmond has the fifth lowest property taxes (average per property) out of 21 Metro Vancouver municipalities.

Coun. Carol Day opposed the budget at committee level, citing lack of details in the committee’s 265-page report. The budget is expected to pass this Monday.

Library hours restored, expanded services for kids denied Graeme Wood

fter being forced earlier this year to close his doors to eager readers on Monday and Friday evenings, head librarian Greg Buss has found a temporary solution to restore branch hours at the Cambie, Ironwood and Steveston libraries.

Buss had faced scrutiny by Richmond city council over declining revenues and increased expenses.

On Monday, council tentatively approved restoring branch hours to pre-2016 levels, as

part of the Richmond Public Library’s $9.7 million budget, which will see a 2.86 per cent increase in operating costs over last year.

Rising costs have been a bone of contention. The City of Richmond will pay $8.9 million toward the library budget ($800,000 is earned in revenues, such as fines), up from $7.7 million in 2011.

Restoring branch hours will cost $200,000.

Savings of $134,000 were created through attrition of staffing levels and salaries. The city will pick up a $64,000 tab to complete the process.

Buss said he is confident the changes are sustainable, although on paper they are only

temporary as part of this year’s budget.

Meanwhile, Buss’ proposition that council expand services for children, families and seniors at a cost of $400,000 (a 0.2 per cent property tax impact) was denied.

Richmond actually funds its libraries below the regional average of $53.63 per capita, with just $41.26 in likewise spending (notably, Richmond provides the least amount of floor space per capita).

Coun. Bill McNulty and Linda McPhail opposed the initial closures.

For instance, Cathie Thorneycroft said she was “shocked” by Mayor Malcolm Brodie’s “attitude towards our library system,” especially considering the City of Richmond subsidizes the Richmond Olympic Oval.

The Oval has built ROX, a multi-million dollar museum, with the council-endorsed mandate to promote the Olympic movement, as part of Richmond’s legacy of being an affiliate host Olympic city in 2010.

As the Oval’s municipal transfers increase, city councillors have continued to complain about downloading of services and responsibilities by senior levels of government.

Plans to demolish old Minoru pool

R

ichmond’s once iconic Minoru Aquatic Centre is expected to be demolished in 2018, according to a City of Richmond report on infrastructure.

The pool will become obsolete when the new $80 million Minoru Complex, featuring two, 25-metre pools and a seniors’ centre, is completed in late 2017, across the parking lot at the former site of the Minoru Pavilion and one soccer field.

City council will need to approve the planned $3 million demolition, which is to include interim landscaping.

City staff has indicated the site of the existing pool could be used as green space, considering Minoru Park lost a significant chunk of it with the new recreational facility.

“The new Minoru Complex, that will provide programs and services currently held at Minoru Aquatics Centre, has created an additional facility footprint in the park. By demolishing the current Minoru Aquatics Centre, additional park and open space could be generated,” notes the report.

City engineers note that the existing 56-year-old structure does not lend itself easily to alternate uses. Furthermore it is in poor condition, so demolition is the “most viable option.”

The interim landscaping will be replaced with a more permanent plan in 2019, once the Minoru Vision Plan is completed.

Councillors could choose to develop the land or leave it green.

The new facility will also feature new change rooms for outdoor athletes. The city stated in 2014 the facility would open in June 2017. The opening now appears to be delayed. The facility is being built by construction firm Stuart Olsen.

Grease problem adds to utility costs Graeme Wood

ew funds for a full-time grease inspector and a new supervisor to handle litter collection will come from an increase in one’s utility bill come 2017.

A City of Richmond report to city council indicates staff had expected an increase in illegal dumping in city parks when bi-weekly garbage collection was implemented last year. As such, the city will hire a new supervisor to handle the mess. The city also reported that there has been an increase in illegal dumping of drywall with asbestos from home demolitions after new WorkSafeBC disposal requirements were recently put in place.

The new staff position will help handle the increased illegal dumping, as well as an uptick in visits to the recycling depot.

Furthermore, an increase in illegal grease dumping has resulted in city council upgrading a part-time grease inspector to full-time status.

Total average utility rate increases for households on water meters amount to

2.5 per cent for detached homes, 3.1 per cent for apartments and condos and three per cent for townhouses (not on city garbage service).

The city continues to incentivize homeowners to choose smaller garbage bins and increase organic waste collection.

Garbage collection fees will go up 3.2 per cent for those with the big, 240-litre containers while they will go down 1.7 per cent for those choosing smaller 120-litre bins. Condo owners will be hit the hardest with an increase of 9.3 per cent ($8.10) per unit for garbage collection.

The city expected to see more organic waste collected separately as Metro Vancouver will be lowering the threshold for food waste found in garbage bags from 25 per cent to five per cent.

The city reports that it has saved some money by diverting recyclable materials it collects to a facility in New Westminster. The city had previously been forced to divert materials to Surrey under an agreement with MMBC, a non-profit

industry-led group that now controls blue bin collection.

n Multi-million dollar fix for grease problem

Richmond’s grease problem has gotten so bad, city council has tentatively approved a $3.5 million project to install a new sanitary pump station and grease management chamber in the downtown core.

“While a number of programs have been

implemented to mitigate the impact of grease blockages, including inspection of commercial grease traps, there is growing need for grease management in residential areas in City Centre,” states a report to council.

The multi-million dollar project involves land acquisition, in addition to the new equipment. The city is also expected to review its mitigation efforts to reduce grease in the sewer system.

hen B.C. immigration consultant and Richmond resident Xun “Sunny” Wang was convicted last fall of a massive fraud scheme, a gargantuan task still lay ahead for border and immigration officials — sort through his client list of 1,600 people to determine if they should be penalized.

This week, the Canada Border Services Agency provided an update on what it described as the “single largest investigation of immigration fraud” in the province’s history: Officers have detected misrepresentation in about 320 cases and have referred them to immigration authorities who have the power to revoke citizenship or permanent resident status, and more than 500 cases are still being investigated.

An additional 136 individuals have voluntarily given up their permanent resident

status.

Some of Wang’s clients, however, are girding for a fight. The Immigration and Refugee Board has so far issued exclusion orders against 43 permanent residents, effectively banning them from Canada for five years, but many are appealing on humanitarian and compassionate grounds, insisting they had no knowledge of Wang’s deception and were victims themselves.

Officials with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada were not able to say if they had revoked the citizenship of any of Wang’s clients because they do not track the outcomes of cases related to a large-scale investigation.

A B.C. court heard last year that Wang and his associates at New Can Consultants had altered clients’ passports to make it appear they had spent the requisite number of days in Canada to obtain citizenship or permanent residency when, in fact, they had not.

New Coast Realty was fined $7,500 two years after an auditor discovered that the company’s director and other staff were involved in real estate activities that required a licence.

he tell-tale sound of the jingle bells lets you know the Salvation Army’s annual Christmas Kettle Campaign is in full swing.

First used in St. John’s, Newfoundland, in 1906, today there are more than 2,000 kettles collecting donations across the country, including the 20 or so in Richmond where hopes are the total raised will reach this year’s goal.

In 2015, donations reached about $130,000, about $5,000 short of the goal, said Maj. Kathie Chiu.

“That was low, pretty much our bare minimum,” said Chiu, adding much of the money goes towards sending children from needy families to camp each summer.

“I am hoping we can do better this year, otherwise we’re having to restrict the amount of help we can give out. And

that’s always disappointing,” she said. “But we will always find the money to send kids to camp, kids will always get presents at Christmas and we’ll provide Christmas meals. But we will have to cut back in other areas to achieve that.”

The amount collected locally is on a bit of a rebound from the total in 2013 when the kettles brought in roughly $160,000. That dropped to $129,000 in 2014 before edging up slightly in 2015.

“That one year, in 2014, the news from our head office was that donations were down across the country,” Chiu said. “I think the economy was sluggish still, people were worried and donations were down.”

With a small army of volunteers, hopes are to build slightly on last year’s total, said Lennie Cristobal, this year’s kettle campaign organizer, who is also responsible for coordinating other charitable programs locally for the Salvation Army.

New this year is some Salvation Army locations collecting donations using debit and credit cards, although Richmond hasn’t adopted the system just yet.

“We wanted to...next year we’ll be looking at some high traffic areas to use the debit/credit card system,” Chiu said.

“I think they would pay for themselves, but I don’t think it’s as easy as just putting them out there in a designated place,” Chiu said.

On several occasions, the man, who showed signs of instability, wanted to meet her, but the group’s decoy, posing as Kat, made excuses not to meet.

Eventually, they agreed to meet him at McDonald’s on Alderbridge Way at 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27.

Brady and a Creep Hunters colleague got there at 7 p.m. to have a look around. They already had face pictures of the guy they’d arranged to meet; he had even sent one en route.

“We get there early so we can be calm and collected and gather the best evidence for the police,” said Brady.

The pair went inside at 7:50 p.m.

Their “friend” was already sitting there. Brady sat down next to him.

“I asked if he was David (name changed),” said Brady.

“You’re here to meet Kat?” he asked the man.

When told that it was actually Creep Hunters he had been talking to for 26 days, the man initially denied it, then confessed.

“We said he was free to go, but he just continued to talk in circles; he was definitely in shock,” said Brady.

“We told him that we didn’t want him to hurt himself.

“He started crying and shouting and then called his family on the phone.”

Reaching out to reunite refugee family A journey into the unknown of Africa earns Ruth Beardsley a United Way award Philip Raphael Staff Reporter

his wasn’t in Ruth Beardsley’s job description.

The Richmond woman, who was a senior manager with Options Community Services Society in Surrey — a non-profit charity providing social services in Surrey, Delta, White Rock and Langley — was certainly used to helping refugee families adjust to their lives in Canada. But to place herself on the front line and bring a three yearold girl back from Kenya to reunite her with her mom and five siblings who had come to Canada?

That was going above and beyond.

But Beardsley managed it. And for her efforts she was recently recognized with the 2016 United Way Community Partner Award and the establishment of the United Way Ruth Beardsley Reunification Fund in her honour, which will help bring refugee families together.

“I didn’t set out knowing this is what I was going to do,” Beardsley told the News. “But I just felt the heartache this mother felt, making the decision to leave her daughter behind.

“It was the right thing to do.”

It was 2008 when Zeynab, the mother of six children who had fled Ethiopia, was granted refugee access to Canada. But the paperwork only called for five of her children to accompany her.

Her sixth, two-month-old Nasteha, had not been born when the refugee pro-

cess had started and was left off the documents.

Officials told Zeynab at gunpoint she would not be allowed to take the little girl with her to a new life in Canada.

“One of the programs I was responsible for was called the First Step Early Years Refugee program where we supported families who had young children,” said Beardsley, adding it was through that she learned of the plight facing Zeynab who had given birth to Nasteha in the UN refugee camp in Nairobi.

“Nasteha simply wasn’t on the list,” Beardsley said.

“I felt so bad that someone would be put in this position of having to choose to bring her other five children to safety or stay behind with her baby, not knowing if she’d ever be able to get out of Kenya.”

Despite not being experienced in the reunification process before she heard Zeynab’s story, Beardsley started helping find out how to help.

In the end, it took three and a half years to gain

permission to bring Nasteha to Canada.

“It was a very confusing process. We weren’t certain it was going to happen,” Beardsley said. “But I was the person most familiar with the case and I just wanted to see this reunification happen.

“Just being persistent helped get the paperwork done,” she added.

Before Zeynab left Kenya, Nasteha was, at first, going to be left in the care of a neighbour at the refugee camp. But the night before leaving for Canada, the girl’s aunt, Ebla, was enlisted to provide care.

“That aunt basically kept her alive under very difficult circumstances,” Beardsley said, who arrived in Nairobi in 2012 and had to endure a drawn out process to gain the correct documentation to get the girl turned over to her.

“It wasn’t an easy trip,” Beardsley said. “From day to day, we weren’t sure whether we were going to be able to bring her back with us.

“They wouldn’t give us the papers immediately.

We had to make four or five trips to the embassy and each time they made an excuse why we couldn’t get the travel documents,” Beardsley said. “Essentially, it came to them wanting a bribe from me. I didn’t pick up on the cues about that, not wanting to believe this was happening.”

But repeated calls to the Kenyan embassy back home in Canada helped get the process back on track and no bribe was ever paid for Nasteha’s release.

family is doing well, with Nasteha thriving in school, having learned to speak English quickly.

“Her mom is very jealous about that,” Beardsley said with a laugh.

Her father was not able to be at the refugee camp for lack of documentation and now Beardsley is in the

process of trying to get him passage to Canada and complete the reunification.

“It brings me great joy to see this family together now,” Beardsley said.

“Zeynab was told to forget about her baby. But she couldn’t. And as a mom myself, I could relate to that.”

One of her sons, who accompanied Beardsley on the trip, made a documentary about the experience called My Heart in Kenya and is trying to get it shown on the film festival circuit.

ith the cold days of December upon us, we need something to warm the cockles of our hearts. And the French have invented just what we need.

On the third Thursday in November, six to eight weeks after the grape harvest, Beaujolais Nouveau was released.

Beaujolais is a wine region south of Burgundy, France where almost all the grapes are the red Gamay. One third of the crop is used to make the Nouveau.

It was originally a way to celebrate the end of the harvest and a great cash flow for hungry vignerons. By the 1980s, Beaujolais Nouveau became a trend celebrated in Paris and beyond, including Vancouver. Georges Duboeuf, one of France’s important wine merchants, popularized Beaujolais Nouveau.

Nowadays, the trend in overseas markets has subsided.

Some critics, such as Karen MacNeil wrote, “Drinking it gives you the same kind of silly pleasure as eating cookie dough.” But wine guru Robert M. Parker Jr. disagrees, calling those opinions, “ludicrous” and describes the wine as “delicious, zesty, exuberant, fresh, vibrantly fruity.”

I opened the Duboeuf 2016 Beaujolais Nouveau ($19.99) to see where I stood on this issue. I loved its purple red colour, a sign of a young red wine. Its nose reminded me of grapes in general and red fruit such as cherries, raspberries, and cranberries.

Sipping it revealed its lively and exuberant flavour. This is due to its youth and its bracing acidity, and also carbonic maceration, where the grapes undergo an anaerobic fermentation accentuating the fruitiness.

The Georgia Straight’s Kurtis Kolt remarked that during his recent visit to Beaujolais, he was surprised that “plates of charcuterie sausage and cheese were served during our tastings. The high-acid, fruit, berry-driven character of each of the pours cut perfectly through the richness of those bites, washing down their saltiness admirably.”

Having read this, I then enjoyed pieces of Steveston’s Sausage Haus Biermeister sausage and Kolt’s recommendation was indeed correct.

Next, I uncorked the regular style of Beaujolais, a Georges Duboeuf 2014 Beaujolais ($13.99). This is a slightly aged wine (two years old) which is a deeper red burgundy colour indicating its fuller flavour. It has a seductive violet and cherry scent with a richer fruit flavour than the Nouveau.

I also enjoyed its hint of black pepper in the taste. It is smoother because it is older so the tartness of the acid is reduced with age.

Like the Nouveau, it is an excellent food wine, going well with many appetizers: charcuterie, holiday ham, and festive turkey when served chilled. And for cheese lovers, French Morbière with its line of ash half-way through the cheese, is a match made in Beaujolais, if not heaven!

Truth is now enslaved to entertainment In other words

T

ruth has been getting an unprecedented beating. It’s been hijacked and treated with so little respect that it seems to have lost its identity. A stand-in quickly materialised, going by the name of post-truth.

Oxford Dictionaries voted it word of the year and defined it as “relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.”

How on Earth did we get to this point? Have we developed some kind of virtual armour to shield our egos, so that when facts come shooting at us, the barbed ones — the facts we don’t like — bounce right off?

I’m convinced that the current crisis was brought about in part by our insatiable appetite for entertainment. The success of radio, TV, social media — any transmitter of news or information — depends on audience size, which is measured in various ways, including clicks and likes. Fierce competition means that anything to snag the public’s attention is worth trying. And as revealed by the audacity and velocity of fake “news” circulating during (and after) the U.S. election, people no longer think critically.

Sometimes, I wonder if we really understand how complex truth is. An oft-used synonym for truth is fact, but the two weren’t always interchangeable. Fact is recorded in our language in 1539. It’s based on the Latin noun “factum,” from “facere,” to do. Early on, fact denoted an action, deed, also an evil deed or crime, a meaning that survives in the

he response to my letter to city hall regarding the lack of safety on some of Richmond’s roads, published in the Richmond News, was fantastic. I heard from cyclists, city councillors and motorists. Support for safer cycling in Richmond does exist.

The thing is, the section of River Road where a group of cyclists was hit last month, resulting in one fatality, is far from city hall. Is it a case of out of sight, out of mind?

Are roads “out there” not as important to city hall as bike lanes “in here,” which would be central Richmond. It got me wondering if safe cycling routes for popular, inner city destinations is a greater priority for city hall.

The largest health and sports-oriented building in Richmond is the Olympic Oval. Built eight years ago, it’s our Olympic legacy, a huge tourist draw and a destination for a myriad of athletes and fun-seekers of every age, every day. It makes sense, then, that there be a nice, well laid-out, safe bike route leading there — at least from city centre.

Not many new bike lanes were created when it was built, and it’s been six years now — ample time to have made that happen.

So here’s my cycling challenge: Find a bike route from city hall to the Olympic Oval that is accessible to cyclists of all skill levels, riding all bike types.

Starting at city hall and Granville Avenue’s bike lane: No. 3 Road doesn’t connect in any useful way to the Oval. Minoru Boulevard’s bike lane, when not closed for construction, has no useful connections either.

Gilbert Road runs north and connects with River Road and the Oval. However, there’s no bike lane on Gilbert. It’s a bike “route,” meaning you ride with traffic and hope the hundreds of cars and trucks passing are paying full attention. I can’t see families riding Gilbert in traffic, so let’s try something else.

No. 2 Road is one of the most dangerous in Richmond with narrow lanes and high traffic volume, due to the bridge.

How about Lynas Lane? It’s wide, but it has cars parked on either side.

The traffic on weekday mornings and afternoons when Blair elementary gets out is a hazard, but weekends are safer.

Lynas leads to River Road, which connects to the Oval.

However, this stretch of River Road was recently re-paved.

No bike lanes were installed; there’s not even a shoulder, and the gravel dyke isn’t safe for all bike types.

Final Grade: A disappointing “F.” There are hardly any dedicated bike lanes in sight, so how can families, road bikers or any cyclists not accustomed to riding in traffic get to the Oval safely? They can’t. City hall claims cyclist safety is a priority, but that’s not evident.

So, if you’d like to ride your bike safely to the Oval, let city hall know they need to put our money where their mouth is.

phrases after or before the fact. Towards the end of the 16th century, fact had become synonymous with reality and truth, and by 1632 it referred to something that had really occurred, which is the main sense that fact has today.

Truth (and true) originated not in Latin but in Old English dialect words for faith, loyalty, which ultimately come from the Proto-Germanic “trewaz,” also the source for the modern German word for loyal, “treu.” During the Middle English period (circa 1150-1500), truth signified a statement or belief agreeing with reality. By the second half of the 16th century, its sense had extended to accuracy, correctness, genuineness.

Another word for truth that was current in Middle English is sooth, which also denoted justice, rectitude, reality, certainty. A soothsayer was, in Middle English, a person who

pretended to be able to foretell the future; by 1642, he had become a person who spoke the truth.

Related to sooth (and truth) is the verb soothe, based on the Old English verb “sothian,” to prove something to be true. At the start of the 17th century, soothe also signified to support someone’s assertion or statement.

Nowadays, we use soothe mainly with the meaning to calm or tranquillize someone or their feelings, or to reduce the intensity of a pain, senses it had acquired by the 18th century.

If truth and facts could be soothed (in the Old English sense), and if our smouldering critical faculties could be reignited, we might stand a chance of receding from the brink on which we now totter.

Ravens show they are among the best in Canada A

n outstanding showing back east has earned the Richmond Bantam “A” Ravens national recognition.

The rep girls hockey team finished second at the 2 Nations College Showcase tournament in Toronto. The Ravens were edged 2-1 in overtime by the Ottawa 67s. The result moved them to No. 4 in the latest Canadian rankings.

The tournament was a great opportunity for the players to gain exposure to U.S. colleges as over 45 NCAA schools had evaluators in attendance.

“The quality of hockey was exceptional. The game is much more physical in Ontario, but it is clean hockey,” said Ravens head coach Tony Lindsay. “The teams there play more of a north south style of play, hard on the forecheck and hard to the net. Our style incorporates much more cycling and east west play and emphasizes speed on the transition.

“Every team we played was made up primarily of 2002 players, where our team is half 2002 and half 2003 aged players. Every team was bigger than we were and every shift is intense and every puck is contested. It was an exceptional experience for our players to be pushed at this level.”

The Ravens were part of the U14 AA Division that featured 20 of the top teams in North America. Four round-robin games determined which teams would advance to the semi-finals.

Richmond opened with a 6-2 win over Brampton Canadettes, then came up with a big 4-0 win over the Ancaster Avalanche. The Hamilton team won the earlier 2 Nations Cup tourney in Detroit and was ranked No. 5 in Ontario.

Richmond blueliner taking her game to world’s stage

R

ichmond native Courtney Vorster will begin 2017 on the game’s world stage wearing her country’s colours.

The blueliner was among 23-players named Monday to Team Canada’s roster for the 2017 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship, slated for Jan. 7-15 in the Czech Republic.

Vorster is one of just four 16-year-olds selected. She is attending Shattuck-St. Mary’s — the renowned hockey boarding school that includes Sydney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, Zach Parise and U.S. women’s team star Amanda Kessell among its alumni. She is currently playing for the school’s U19 Prep team.

Pipes, who played in the Canadian School Sports Hockey League for Shawnigan League a year ago, also leads the PJHL in goals against average (1.98) and save percentage .938, while improving his season record to 11-6-0.
