t’s rather creepy knowing someone has been walking up to our homes to deliver a flyer that claims “The Chinese are taking over!” and encourages people to join the altright, listing a website where you’ll find folks giving the heil Hitler salute.

A man who called the News to say he’d found one of the flyers at his door was quick to note these websites are American-based and the delivery of the flyers was probably the actions of “some lone wolf.”

I would agree, this type of bigotry does not represent Richmond. At the same time, it would be a mistake to be dismissive. If there is anything to be learned from both the U.S. presidential election and Brexit (the UK’s referendum to leave the European Union) it is don’t underestimate the power of fear; it’s no match for logic. People gripped by fear don’t hear well. And they certainly don’t hear those who aren’t listening to them.

The fact is, people have valid concerns about the lack of affordable housing, ruptured communities and wages that don’t cover the bills. (food banks are seeing ever-more clients with jobs that just don’t pay enough.)

But none of the above is about race.

Foreign speculation may be helping drive up housing prices. But the key word is “speculation” not “foreign.” Whether the money comes from China, Brazil, Timbuktu or Toronto, the result is the same.

And if we don’t like the abundance of wealth coming into our community, let’s recall it was our federal government’s decision to introduce the (now defunct) “investor class immigrant,” which basically gave rich foreigners a fast pass into Canada. If we don’t like mega homes, why is our municipal government still fumbling over house size bylaws?

And who/what’s to blame for low-wage jobs?

As it’s been said, it’s the economy, stupid.

In a twisted way, this makes me think of the smell coming from Harvest Power, the organic waste recycling plant. For sure, people have a valid complaint, but the absolutely wrong solution is to stop recycling organic waste — as some have suggested.

The problem is not recycling or immigration. In fact, both are essential for our survival and prosperity. The issue is how we balance the financial benefits of mega homes, for example, with their costs to community, how we balance corporate power with public interest.

I don’t believe the flyer reflects a grounswell of anti-Chinese sentiment, however, there is growing unease about changes we’ve all witnessed. And while race is the wrong target, it’s an easy one, which is why it’s vital we address the core issues of disparity and fairness.

When people lose faith in our institutions, when they feel the tax system is skewed and regulatory authorities are ineffective, fear rises and scapegoats are found.

LETTERSto the Editor Don't let racism divide Dear Editor, Re: “Racist flyer shocks Steveston residents,” News, Nov. 18.

We are a group of Chinese immigrants who have come to Canada from different parts of the world. Some of us came earlier and others more recently. We chose Canada to be our home and we love this country dearly.

We are no different from anyone else living in this community. We have to work very hard to make a living, sometimes more than one job. We have a mortgage to pay every month. We pay taxes to fund the services we receive. We want to bring up our children as responsible citizens, like everyone does.

We may not speak English fluently.

In fact, some of us are struggling with English, as it is difficult to learn a new language at our age. But we try our best to communicate with our neighbours in English and laugh off the mistakes we make at times.

Like many in the community, we volunteer at our children’s schools. We par-

ticipate in the Terry Fox Run and attend the Remembrance Day ceremony at city hall every year. We make donations to the food bank and other organizations. We cheer for Canadian athletes at international competitions and we are also very proud that some Canadians of Chinese descent have represented Canada well at the Olympics.

All in all, we love Canada as much as everyone else does in our community.

That’s why we are saddened by the divisive pamphlets distributed in some parts of our community recently.

These pamphlets were meant to divide our community according to ethnic origins. We know that Richmond has been a multicultural community for many decades. First Nations, Europeans, Japanese and Chinese were all pioneers and forefathers in this city’s history. We are proud of the cultural richness of our heritage which has made Richmond a very special place.

Therefore, we are thankful that many of you have spoken against these divisive attempts aimed at ruining our community. We know that, as in the playground, when the bystanders remain silent when there is bullying going on, the bully will not stop.

We have to stand up as one community and say “no” to racism.

Is Richmond more mine than yours? I don't think so Dear Editor, Re: “Racist flyer shocks Steveston residents,” News, Nov. 18.

Last week, a flyer was dropped on doorsteps in the Steveston area of Richmond.

Its message is aimed at the community’s “marginalized” white people.

I’m white. This is my hometown. And the flyer is bull.

My parents are from Montreal, and their parents are from Europe. My mom and dad moved to Richmond in the late 1970s — into a house in the South Arm area where my sister and I grew up and they still live.

Across the street from us lived a family of Chinese descent who had been in the country since the early 1900s. Next door was a family who had recently immigrated from Hong Kong. Both had boys about my age who were among my best friends. I never felt the street, the neighbourhood, the city or the country belonged to me more than them.

Recall that Coast Salish peoples were the original stewards of what we now call Richmond. In fact, Steveston was once the site of a Musqueam village. Later, it thrived as a fishing community, largely populated by people from Japan. Then the Second World War happened, and all people of Japanese origin were sent to internment camps; their property was confiscated and auctioned off.

The flyer asks whether or not being “marginalized in the community your forefathers

built” is what “you” (Whitey) “signed up for.” But this question begs another: To whom does Richmond belong?

To me, the answer is all of us and none of us. All of us because it’s never been the sole claim of white people. (Nor should it ever be.) And none of us because, regardless of who lives here now or who lived here 50 years ago or 100 years ago, we’re all guests on unceded Coast Salish territory.

None of this is to say that housing affordability (also brought up in the flyer) is not an important issue. But I would argue that it’s not productive — or ethical — to pin unaffordability on one group. People of all stripes have benefited from a housing system that rewards speculation and treats homes not as shelter but as a commodity. If we don’t like it, let’s advocate to change the system.

Let’s make access to adequate housing a right and support policy that curbs speculation.

In the meantime, for those of us who call this place home, and especially for those of us who have been here slightly longer than others, it’s our duty to foster an inclusive community — to lead by example and ensure everyone feels they belong.

“Whitelash,” xenophobia and racism have no place here. They harken not to an era gone by, but to an era that never was and never should be.

Alt-right alive and well here Empty home tax needed

Dear Editor, Re: “Alt-right pamphlets come to Richmond targeting Chinese people,” Richmond-News.com, Nov. 17.

In the next little while, there will be letters and public declarations of disgust flowing into this publication and others regarding the pamphlets in Steveston. As is often the case in these events, community activists and leaders will try to reassure us that this is an “isolated incident” that is “not reflective of our community values.”

To this, I say: “wake up.”

The alt-right has been well entrenched in Richmond and the Lower Mainland for several years now. (Do I really need to reiterate the racist and xenophobic incidents detailed in this publication and elsewhere?)

Yes, the leaflet included links to two American alt-right websites, but we should also note that it included wording specific to Richmond, or at least the Lower Mainland (“So you can now...have neighbours who refuse to speak your language, and not be able to afford a home!”)

More importantly, even a cursory search will reveal that people are speaking openly about Richmond in this way on the Internet.

Take, for instance, the Council of European Canadians, whose website was listed on the “Hey White Person” posters that appeared recently in Toronto. Many of their web articles are dressed up in pseudoscholarly rhetoric (they often publish the work of the controversial University of New Brunswick academic, Ricardo Duchesne); as a result, the extent of their xenophobia is

difficult to pin down. However, their understanding of Canadian identity is still evident in their “Beliefs and Goals” webpage: “We believe that the pioneers and settlers who built the Canadian nation are part of the European people. Therefore, we believe that Canada derives from and is an integral part of European civilization and that Canada should remain in majority, not exclusively, European in its ethnic composition and cultural character.”

While the organization is not openly racist, it provides a forum for those who are.

Following an article about the Mandarinonly strata council issue in Richmond, one finds a number of choice comments that are barely moderated: “Disgusting. We are being exterminated”; “It is the non-White invasion and White Genocide of Canada”; “That’s what comes from importing millions of enemies”; “Too bad ‘White Racists’ were not supported decades ago.”

Keep in mind, this is not an abstract dialogue. These are people talking about Richmond, and I would hazard a guess that some of them even live here. When the Internet facilitates such discourse, is it any wonder that people feel empowered to print off a few pamphlets?

Can we possibly know the extent of this sentiment? Without good polling and continued study (I’m looking to you, Richmond News), it’s difficult to say. In the meantime, we should be aware that the phenomenon is much larger than a few pamphlets.

Dear Editor, A conservative estimate of the number of empty mega-homes in our neighbourhood (The Monds) would be 50-60, with an average market value of between $2.5 million to $3 million each.

If Richmond followed Vancouver’s lead in implementing a one per cent tax on unoccupied houses, it would mean an additional $1.5 million to $2 million dollars would flow into our city’s coffers, just from the Monds neighbourhood alone.

If we extend that assessment across all of Richmond, and include the untold number of empty condo and town-house units that exist in this city, what could the total of possible additional revenue be?

Upwards of $50 million? What administration would not welcome such an influx of money into their revenue stream?

This would be a justifiable levy, considering the profits these owners are making on their property investments here. It would be especially appropriate if applied to the super-mega mansions that are being built on agricultural land,

allowing those owners to avoid the usual building restrictions and property tax applications and destroy countless acres of some of the best farmland in all of Canada (Globe & Mail - Nov. 19).

With Canadian citizens, and young families in particular, unable to find rental housing (one per cent vacancy rate), while hundreds of houses and condo units sit empty, in many cases for years, this situation is a testament to how our political leaders have failed us. They have let us down both in terms of being unable and/or unwilling to anticipate the onset of these circumstances, and their general lack of concern and initiative in regards to finding ways to ameliorate the plethora of interrelated problems they have fostered, either through their ineptitude or because they have agendas that have less to do with attending to the needs and welfare of Canadian citizens and more to do with pandering to the demands of contractors, developers, and wealthy off-shore speculators.

How about it Mr. Brodie? Follow Vancouver’s lead, or continue to let speculators suck as much money as they can out of our community?

There may not be as many of us longtime Richmond residents around as there used to be, but there stiil may be enough of us to make you accountable at the next election.

T

he removal of a long-established bald eagle’s nest from a 90-foot tree in a Richmond neighbourhood was totally necessary, according to a local raptor expert.

Pairs of bald eagles are thought to have been nesting for about 20 years in the thick-set, cottonwood tree in the backyard of an older-style, detached home on Rosamond Avenue in west Richmond.

Local residents were, however, horrified last week when it became apparent that the nest was removed and a tarp was erected above the nesting fork to prevent the mating eagles from returning.

The Richmond News understands that the nest had to be removed after a neighbour of the property owner expressed safety concerns about the tree’s health.

The property owner then called in an arborist, who deemed the tree was, indeed, a hazard and should be removed.

A subsequent inspection by City of Richmond staff — after the homeowner had applied for a tree-removal permit — confirmed the tree had “significant structural defects” and was determined as “hazardous.”

With the tree condemned, the homeowner had to apply to the provincial Ministry

of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations for a permit to have the nest removed, once the nesting season was over.

“I’ve known about this nest for many years; the homeowner loved it and didn’t want to get rid of it; it’s been in his backyard for many, many years,” said David Hancock, renowned eagle biologist of 55 years and founder of the Hancock Wildlife Foundation, who is frequently consulted by the ministry for cases such as this.

“There were, understandably, insurance liabilities with the tree for the property owner, especially given the arborist report. “(The ministry) called me; it was me that insisted this nest be taken away now because, if they took it away between January and March, it’d be too late for the eagles to find a new nest.

“This way, the eagles have time to find a new location and build a new nest, which takes about three weeks.

“Nobody wants to lose an eagle’s nest, especially me, but when this kind of thing happens, it’s the responsible thing to do.”

Eagles are known to have a “secondary nest” and, although it’s not known if this pair of eagles has one, Hancock said they may be able to nest at the nearby Quilchena Golf Club.

“There are possibilities at the north end of the golf course,” Hancock told the News.

Neighbours upset at removal From page 7 There’s already an eagle’s nest at the southern end, added Hancock, “so if the north location is 400 to 500 yards away, they might be able to go there. That’s roughly how far away it needs to be (for territorial reasons).”

Hancock’s foundation has eyes on 412 active eagle’s nests in the region, from West Vancouver to Tsawwassen and White Rock and as far east as Chilliwack and Harrison Mills.

Local resident Judy Arnold told the News of her sadness at realizing the eagles nest was no more.

“I think it could have been delayed for at least another year or so,” she said.

“This was their primary nest and the eagle was back there today (Monday), clearly looking for its nest. I’m sure more could have been done to save this nest.”

It’s understood that the tree was starting to shed some of its major branches, alerting the owners of the neighbouring property to have it inspected.

The News attempted to speak directly with the wildlife officer, who removed the nest, but was directed to a ministry spokesperson, despite the fact the officer is allowed to field questions from the general public.

A spokesperson for the ministry said it was made of aware in August of the need

to have the nest removed due to the tree’s failing condition.

“The removal of the nest was permitted with the safety and with the best in mind for the eagles. They will now have an opportunity to find an alternate nest…,” read the statement.

“The tree is a cottonwood, which unfortunately are not long lived. These trees tend to grow up quickly, however, they are very susceptible to rot and decay, as noted in the arborist report.”

Asked about the knowledge of a secondary nest, the ministry said that, “Generally raptors have a secondary nest, however we have no confirmed secondary nest for this pair.”

Cindy Lee, founder of Facebook group Save Richmond’s Trees, said she felt “terrible” and “upset” about the removal of a “perfectly good, well-established eagle’s nest.”

“We’ve lost so many trees in Richmond and we’re losing our wildlife at the same time,” said Lee, casting doubts on the tree’s condemnation, although acknowledging she has no specific, arborist qualifications or expertise.

No-one answered the door of the Rosamond Avenue property in question when the News called on Wednesday.

It’s understood the tree is going to be taken down before January.

enowned Aboriginal singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie set foot in Richmond Tuesday to address nearly 1,000 attendees at a non-profit housing conference.

Sainte-Marie spoke to the systemic housing problems Aboriginal people face in Canada and offered up ideas how communities can approach solutions holistically and in a unified manner that involves Aboriginal people.

“Nobody ever gives Aboriginal people credit. You know why? Because people who were writing the textbooks didn’t know. But now we know. It’s an exciting time . . . We have a lot to contribute,” said Sainte-Marie.

The 75-year-old pacifist and social activist weaved light-hearted jokes into her serious message that Aboriginal communities are in need of help. She told the audience that for them to get that help, people need to “decolonize” their way of thinking by embracing Aboriginal-based ideas.

“I think some of us outside the Indigenous community, they think of us in terms of our National Geographic clothes,” she chuckled.

She drew attention to how past generations have been ignorantly educated on Aboriginal people and their communities, thus leading to a lack of understanding amongst non-Aboriginal people.

History comes as a shock to teacher educators, she said.

“A lot are shocked they’ve spent most of their lives teaching bullshit. It was basically propaganda that comes from the 1400s,” said Sainte-Marie.

But not all is lost, she noted. Sainte-Marie said she sees positive changes in how Canadians are addressing past wrongs, namely in recognizing and learning about Aboriginal culture and practices.

She noted the many unrecognized practices and skills Aboriginals lent to presentday society, such as team sports, surgical and medical practices, art, music and astronomy.

“None of us have received this information in school . . . Don’t feel hesitant to learn because you feel you’re not qualified. We’re all here to learn,” she told attendees of the BC Non-profit Housing Association event, who had gathered at the Sheraton hotel to share ideas on improving the non-profit housing sector.

Housing is a major socio-economic problem for many First Nations across Canada.

According to the 2011 National Household Survey, 301,000 homes — or about 21 per cent of all homes — lived in by Aboriginals are in need of major repairs. Nationwide, 2.4 million homes — or about eight per cent of all homes — need such repairs.

Sainte-Marie spoke to the designs of wigwams and teepees — in how they heat and cool effectively, repel water, circulate air, are mobile and much more.

“The teepee is an amazing kind of housing,” she said.

can and must play a role in housing solutions.

She said new ideas such as using reusable natural materials (in her example, re-processed wood pallets), to build homes is in keeping with sustainable practices of many First Nations.

“It’s a way we can reclaim lumber resources that have been taken off our land, often without consent,” she said.

There are 1.4 million Aboriginal people in Canada. Between 2006 and 2011, the

demographic grew by 20 per cent, while Canada’s population grew 5.2 per cent.

Pathways Aboriginal Centre in Richmond pegs the city’s Aboriginal segment at 2.5 per cent of the population.

Aboriginals in Richmond face systemic problems, such as inadequate housing and over-representation in the foster care system.

This year, the federal government announced an additional $416 million for First Nations housing over the next two years.

he provincial government announced Tuesday details of a proposed $516 million investment in 2,900 rental housing units across the province, 160 of which will be situated in Richmond.

According to a government news release, Richmond is to receive $6 million of that money as part of a multi-faceted private development in City Centre that is presently in the building permit process. n Rob Howard According to the Ministry Responsible for Housing, S.U.C.C.E.S.S., a non-profit non-government organization that specializes in immigrant services, will be the primary operator of the planned rental complex at 7600 Alderbridge Way that will provide for 160 new units aimed at housing seniors and families.

If the 160 units are approved, they would be part of a major redevelopment project involving at least 10 properties on Alderbridge Way, Elmbridge Way, Cedarbridge Way and Minoru Boulevard.

It is unclear where the other funding will come from. The land alone is assessed at $7 million. It is presently owned by RCG Group and occupied by New Coast Lifestyles, a development firm for retirement homes owned

by Rob Howard, former BC Liberal MLA and city councillor.

IBI Group, representing the entire permit application, is proposing to build townhouses, affordable housing, market housing and a seniors’ retirement living community (New Coast) on the properties, according to building permit applications.

The City of Richmond said it has no timeline as to when the permits will be completed.

Howard’s company hopes to complete its retirement home complex by 2019, pending council approval.

The Ministry Responsible for Housing states the 68 projects, including the one in Richmond, are at the proposal stage.

For comparative purposes, the 296-unit Kiwanis Towers cost close to $60 million in total, including land costs. The project was funded by the province, City of Richmond and Kiwanis Society.

Many other projects announced by the Ministry hinge on outside financial support as well. For example, a Surrey development will be built in partnership with the YWCA Metro Vancouver.

Over the next 10 years, the City of Richmond expects it will need 3,200 rental units, including 1,300 for “very low-income” residents (earning less than $30,000 per household).

To date, it has proven difficult for the city to facilitate rental developments in Richmond.

The city’s vacancy rate is said to be as low as 0.3 per cent, according to Metro Vancouver regional government. Because of stagnant wages, rising rent costs and aging, subsidized housing infrastructure, the city estimates about nine per cent of households in Richmond are at risk of homelessness.

he soft glowing lights slowly shift the colours of the walls from a soothing, deep indigo to a warm, autumn red. Meanwhile, bubbles gently gurgle and provide a restful soundtrack as they rise from the bottom of a tall, transparent, water-filled acrylic cylinder.

Welcome to the Snoezelen room at the Richmond Society for Community Living’s (RSCL) facility on Westminster Highway.

Tucked away in a narrow but cozy space inside the building, it’s an oasis of calm – the perfect spot where someone, young or old, with a developmental disability, autism or

even dementia can experience a beneficial and tailored therapeutic environment.

While the concept has been around since the late 1970s, when Dutch therapists Jan Hulsegge and Ad Verheul experimented with a sensory tent at the DeHartenburg Institute, this is Richmond’s very first facility, and one of just a few in the Lower Mainland.

The term Snoezelen was coined from the contraction of the Dutch verbs “snuffelen” (to seek and explore) and “doezelen” (to relax).

“A room like this can really help somebody to learn how to process their senses in a safe environment,” said Lisa Cowell, who is RSCL’s community development manager.

Using a special lighting system, the walls of the 9x28-foot space, which was formerly used for storage, can be transformed into a variety of colours at the flick of a switch on a wall-mounted control panel.

Plus, there is a variety of tactile experiences, from a small, lighted ball-pit users can plunge into, to a flowing curtain of LED lights surrounding a comfy bean bag cushion “The room allows everyone to have their own, unique experience,” said Jessica Hamm, an infant development consultant with RSCL. “We serve more than 1,100 people and each has their own sensory needs, from calmer to more stimulating.”

For example, someone who has autism, dealing with varying levels of sensory stimulation in the world around them can be a challenge, Cowell said.

“Things can certainly be overwhelming for someone who processes their senses in a different way.”

On the other end of the scale, the Snoezelen room can also provide increased levels of stimulation.

“In those cases, the individual maybe has difficulty in speaking, may use a wheelchair or have other physical limitations,” Cowell said. “And a room like this can really help caregivers or other people to learn how to read a person’s happiness, their desires.

That can be useful for their life in the com-

munity where they can be better understood.”

Typical sessions in the room run from 30 minutes to two hours.

“The first thing that you see most of the time from users is that they are drawn to one thing in the room. Then it’s vocalization of what they enjoy,” Hamm said.

“One fellow who came in jumped right into the ball-pit and covered himself in the balls, except for his eyes so he could see what we were doing. And I could hear him say, ‘This is so nice, I am so happy here.’

“There’s this instant relaxation that happens.”

The room was completed in late spring.

Cost of developing and equipping it was $35,000.

“For us, it was a bit of a dream to have it and we didn’t know how to get it started,” Cowell said.

But, while hosting a Richmond Chamber of Commerce event at the RSCL’s facility when the Snoezelen room was still just an idea, a local architect, Rosa Salcido Rosa Salcido, of Vivid Green Architecture, who was among those in the visiting group, said she had designed other Snoezelen rooms and said she’d be keen to donate her services to get one fitted into the former storage room space.

With that assistance in place, RSCL went about fundraising at its annual gala, since a facility of this type is not eligible for government funding.

“For us to be able to offer this room for 1,100 Richmondites is amazing,” Cowell added.

earing about moustaches all this month reminded me of the time I believed my chances of becoming a millionairess hung, so to speak, on a moustache.

Many years ago, a collector friend showed me a curious porcelain cup that he’d just acquired. He was inordinately pleased with himself. “I’ll bet you a million dollars you’ll never guess what this is,” he said.

I kept a poker face and examined the cup.

For a whole minute I didn’t speak, only sighing a few times, while my friend looked increasingly smug. Finally, I said, “It’s a moustache cup.” At those words my friend became as angry as Rumpelstiltskin upon hearing the queen correctly guess his name.

My friend’s moustache cup dated from the Victorian age, probably the second half of the 19th century when moustaches were again a favourite facial adornment, after having been eschewed by fashionable men for most of the previous century. Beards had suffered the same fate, regaining popularity in the course of the 19th century.

Men’s hair care in Victorian times was as fussy and involved as that of women. Styling agents such as pomades and waxes gave shape to moustaches (and tamed eyebrows).

These products were sometimes coloured, ideal for hiding grey hairs. Black wax for moustaches was also known as mascara, the Spanish word for mask or stain (from the medieval Latin “masca,” meaning spectre, nightmare). The bar across a moustache cup

was intended to prevent the wax from melting in the hot tea.

The popularity of moustaches, as of other facial hair, rises and falls like an eternal stock market. We know men of ancient times sported beards and moustaches, as numerous portraits testify. In fact, the English word moustache ultimately derives from the ancient Greek word “mystax.” In the Doric Greek dialect it referred to the upper lip and is related to the Attic Greek dialect word “mastax,” signifying jaws and mouth.

At the start of the ninth century, facial hair was discouraged, even outlawed, among members of the Roman Catholic Church.

Pope Leo III, on the throne of St. Peter’s from 795 to 816, is believed to have been the first clean-shaven pope. Papal beards didn’t reappear until Pope Julius II, Michelangelo’s patron, grew one in 1511-1512 to mark his mourning of the Papal States’ loss of Bologna.

Side whiskers were another type of masculine facial hair already seen on ancient portraits — most famously of Alexander the Great — and which grew abundantly, together with beards and moustaches, in the 19th century.

Their shape led to them being called mutton chops. Sideburns, another term for them, derives from the name of the American Civil War general, Ambrose Burnside, who wore them like a garland across his face.

Oh, back to that bet — although I didn’t admit it, I probably wouldn’t have been able to identify the object had I not seen a moustache cup illustrated in an antiques magazine only the day before. And no, I never got the million dollars.

Sports Council and someone who has been immersed in volunteering at the highest levels for sport locally and across the country since the 1970s, said it’s “always nice to get honoured like this.

“But it’s very much about the people you meet over the years; I’ve met some great volunteers, who put so much into the sport they’re connected to and get little or no financial reward for it; they just love the sport and love the community.

“It’s those people that I’m glad to have known and some of which have gone on to become great friends.

“People often ask why I’ve put so much (into local sport), but I always tell them about a lifetime of amazing friendships.”

here are two names synonymous with Richmond and sports and, between them, they’ve clocked up an incredible 75 years doing what they love.

But when you talk to Don Fennell and Jim Lamond about being two of this year’s 17 inductees onto the Richmond Sports Wall of Fame, a couple of simple words feature prominently in their past and present motivation: people and community.

the city for almost five decades, Lamond cited his founding role in Richmond Sports Council among the highlights.

“It’s hard to say, there’s been so many and I’ve been connected to so many sports in Richmond over all those years,” said Lamond, who lives on Ash Street.

“Being a founding member of the sports council is something quite special to me, I guess, and I was with the B.C. soccer team that won gold in 1981 in Thunder Bay. “I remember learning to referee, while coaching soccer; we got 100 questions about refereeing and off you went.

“We coached soccer on a Saturday, refereed youth soccer on a Sunday and everyone was a volunteer back then, coaches and referees.”

Also on his resume was involvement, either organizing or administrating, in the BC Summer Games, BC Senior Games and the Commonwealth Games bid committee.

D

uring his career, Fennell — also a key organizer of the Richmond Sports Awards and the Richmond Sports Council — was known for going over and above the call of

duty, attending sporting events at all hours and in all weathers, even after clocking off.

“I guess it was a feeling of community; this feeling that these (athletes, young and old) deserved some recognition,” he said.

“I felt like I was a conduit to go out and tell their stories; whether it was a youth game or something more competitive.”

So what’s Fennell doing these days? He’s writing a book.

It’s about “sports, that’s all I can say right now,” he said.

Sports, eh…you don’t say, Don. n This is the second year of inductions onto

the Wall of Fame. The wall honours individuals and teams who have played significant roles in building Richmond’s sports community and/or excelled at their sport.

The Wall of Fame is at the Olympic Oval and is part of the ROX experience. Access to the wall and the accompanying History of Sport in Richmond exhibit is free.

Members of the public can submit nominations for the 2017 inductees, up to Dec. 31, via a form posted on the City of Richmond website at Richmond.ca/Sports.

Swimming, soccer and rugby stars among Wall of Fame inductees T his year’s inductees include: Pioneer: Sam Gilmore – contributed to early development of lacrosse in Richmond.

Yuichi Akune – founded the Steveston Kendo Club, competed nationally and internationally.

Wally Iverson – competitive bowler and member of BC Bowling Hall of Fame.

Builder: Paul Alexander – long-time official and organizer with Richmond Rod and Gun Club and Shooting

Federation of Canada.

Betty Hedges – a founder of the Richmond Swim Club, forerunner of the Richmond Kigoos.

Dennis Hedges – a founder of the Richmond Juvenile Soccer Association and active in building the Richmond Swim Club along with his wife, Betty.

Matt Phillips – founded numerous high school football programs in Richmond, member of BC Football Hall of Fame.

Ron White – founder of Richmond Raiders junior football club

and BC Football Hall of Fame member.

Rick Henderson – founding member of Richmond Sports Council, founder of Richmond senior men’s and masters basketball leagues, coach for ringette, soccer and basketball and special athletics advocate.

of the top chef’s in Europe, but there was no denying his culinary passion, determination and skill.

emerged as the UK’s first chef worthy of wearing the culinary celebrity tag. Uncompromising and often gruff and blunt, White looked over the youngster from Vancouver and later declared, “Well, you’re from Canada, you can go work on the fish.’”

“I really didn’t know what to expect,” said Hawksworth, who is one of Vancouver’s four leading chefs headlining the From the Kitchen to the Boardroom 2.0 event hosted by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce and Richmond News on Jan. 12 at the River Rock Casino Resort. “It was a bit intimidating to walk into The Canteen, which had just opened up a couple of days before I showed up. It was (White’s) first, big foray into the business.”

But Hawksworth knew that if he was going to pursue his dream of becoming an accomplished chef, he had to, “get his hands dirty.”

And that meant learning from some of the best in the business, a quest that started back home in Vancouver, where he graduated from part-time work in restaurants during high school to getting on the front lines at the Beach House restaurant in Stanley Park.

“I didn’t go to culinary school, so I had to lean on the staff there,” Hawksworth said, adding he displayed a knack for producing in the kitchen and had a habit of asking plenty of questions.

“I soon realized there was so much to learn,” he said.

As he continued to soak up as much as he could, the youngster started to realize that many of the people he looked up to in the various kitchens he spent time in, were from Europe. And if he wanted to continue to rise up the ranks, that’s where he needed to be.

“I loved Vancouver and Canada, but I decided to

“I wanted to have my own, world-class restaurant and it would be meaningless if I’d done that somewhere else,” he said. “I could have done it in the UK, but I love skiing and fishing. I love the space that we have here — it’s a hard existence in the UK. In addition to Hawksworth, From the Kitchen to the Boardroom 2.0 at the River Rock Casino Resort on Jan. 12 will feature Angus An of Maenam, Longtail Kitchen and Fat Mao Noodles; Lucais Syme from Cinara, and Franck Point of Faubourg.

But when they told him to go get other types of fish in the kitchen, he was lost.

“I didn’t have a clue of what they were talking about,” he said.

Hawksworth managed to overcome that, plus the demanding work schedule.

“The hours were just incredibly brutal,” he said, “It was from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m., six days a week. But I was learning so much that if I had come back to Vancouver, there was nowhere I’d get the same education.

“I thought I’d just tough this out. And after four months in The Canteen I wanted to go somewhere I could start at the bottom and learn.”

That led to a solid decade of working with White and Blanc in a number of Michelin star rated restaurants in the UK before moving back to Vancouver in 2000 to be the chef at Ouest restaurant.

But the desire to have his own place still burned brightly and Hawksworth made it a reality in 2011 at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia

go to Europe for a couple of years, which quickly became 10, ”Hawksworth said.

But where was he going to start?

Hawksworth’s stepfather told him to send a resume to White — who mentored the likes of current celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsay and Curtis Stone — and Raymond Blanc, both of whom had at the time recently published books and were building reputations as top chefs in Europe.

“I’m going to be landing on Tuesday, and I’ll be at this hostel, and here’s the phone number,” Hawksworth said, recalling his letter accompanying his resume. “I sent it a week before I went and when I got to the hostel, I had a message from Marco to give him a call.”

And that led to the meeting with the tan suit. ”But it all worked out,” Hawksworth said with a laugh, although being responsible for The Canteen’s seafood offerings pretty much threw him into the deep end.

“I was way out of my element. I knew salmon and

A

Richmond couple is proving that passion, family values — and a little help from technology — can plow a path to success.

The husband and wife team of Jaeriah and Danilo Passeri head up Nirvana Foods, a small (five employees) food production company that specializes in making wholesome pies, which is one of five local firms nominated for a Small BC Business Award.

Their route to gaining recognition started in 2011 when they met in his native Italy.

She was travelling on a work exchange trip, and he was a chef working in a hotel kitchen.

“I knew from the beginning that I liked this girl,” Danilo said. “But my English was so limited that I didn’t know how I was going to be able to talk to her.”

Memorial Street Signs

Poppies remember Richmond’s fallen New poppy-adorned street signs have been posted around the City of Richmond to commemorate local soldiers who lost their lives in military service.

A total of 61 Richmond streets are named for local soldiers who died in military service. Now the memorial streets are being highlighted with new street sign blades that are emblazoned with a poppy, Canada’s traditional symbol of remembrance for those who have been killed in military service.

The program was initiated by the Friends of the Richmond. Installation of the new street signs has been ongoing over the past few weeks and should be complete by the end of November. A complete list of memorial streets can be found at www.richmond.ca An online webpage is under development that will provide background information on the actual veterans named on the memorial signs. ■ Helped by the guidance of Richmond Kajaks head coach Garrett Collier (left) and his late father Richard, Camryn Rogers is taking her promising throwing career to the University of California Berkeley after being offered a full-ride scholarship.

By September of her Grade 11 year, Rogers started to get messages from interested schools across the U.S. via Facebook. The inquires continued over the next several months and her stock soared further when she achieved the qualifying standard for the IAAF World U20 Track and Field Championships in the hammer throw.

She backed up her personal best toss by winning the junior hammer and shot put events at the Canadian Championships in Edmonton in early July. She was back home briefly, packing her bags for the Worlds in Poland, when Cal Berekley throws coach Mohamad Saatara reached out her.

“I was very excited,” Rogers recalled. “I had heard a lot about the school in the throwing community. I knew they had a good coach, a good facility and it was an all-around great atmosphere. As I kept getting more information from coach Saatara the more real it became.”

Still, Rogers wasn’t going to rule out the schools that had

been pursuing her since the beginning. Back in September, she made an official visit to the the University of Minnesota.

“I have talked to people who have made one visit to a school and either signed or made a verbal commitment (before leaving),” said Rogers. “(Minnesota) was hoping I would give mine but I had already told them I was going to try and take as many visits as I could.”

Just over a month later, she headed down to Cal Berekley where the Pac 12 school, with an outstanding academic reputation, more than lived up to her expectations. Rogers stayed on campus and met team members from around the world. Among them was Finnish discus thrower Ilse Kaaj and freshman sprinter Zion Corrales Nelson from Burnaby.

This time, she made a verbal commitment when she met with coaches over breakfast prior to her departure.

The immensely popular coach with the Richmond Kajaks track and field club, who passed away just over a year ago, touched the lives of so many.

Among them is Camryn Rogers who vividly recollected the day she met him.

“It was January 5, 2012 at 5 p.m.,” smiled the personable 17-year-old. “He pointed me towards a hammer and asked me to throw it. I had no clue how to do it but he showed me. My first throw actually wasn’t that bad and my interest was piqued. Everything changed that day.

“Richard had a spirit about him. He was so energetic and very passionate. He definitely loved what he was doing and knew it so well. For me personally, he made the event beautiful and that was something I had never really experienced before.”

Rogers would never look back.

Over the next three years she would blossom into one of the top young throwers in the country — specializing in the hammer but thriving in shot put too. Collier also made sure all her energy wasn’t being spent on preparing for competitions.

“He changed my entire mentality,” Rogers continued.

“I was not as focused on school until he kept asking me about it all the time in training. The hard work I put into training transferred over to school as well. He just helped me with so many areas of my life.”

Rogers’ excellence in athletics and in the classroom has added up to a dream opportunity for the next chapter of her life.

She has accepted a lucrative full-ride scholarship offer to the University of California Berkeley. When the Grade 12 student at RA McMath signed her National Letter of Intent on Nov. 9, she was joined by her current coach — Collier’s son Garrett. Fittingly a framed photo of herself with Richard sat on the desk beside them.

Rogers is following the footsteps of another Collier protege from Richmond. Four-time Canadian champion and Commonwealth Games silver medalist Jennifer Joyce headed to Cal Berekley back in 1999. However, Rogers didn’t know she was going to be a Golden Bear until a month ago.

As she continued to excel at meets north and south of the border, Rogers realized the opportunity to earn a scholarship to an NCAA Division One school was attainable.

“I had always heard of the support in the U.S. for university sports,” she said. “I thought it was so cool and figured I would be heading down south but I had no clue where. It was nice that I was able to talk to a number of people from B.C. who had gone down about their experience.”

But what definitely got me were the people. Everyone was so welcoming and I felt very included. It’s really a bunch of people that are focused and want to do well. That is the atmosphere,” said Rogers.

Accompanying her for both trips down was her mom Shari who has raised Camyrn by herself since she was three.

Shari is an avid distance runner whose friends encouraged her to bring Camyrn out to a Kajaks practice years earlier. It has been an significant commitment since, providing loving support as her daughter bloomed into a world class athlete.

“My mom is my everything. She is my rock,” grinned Rogers. “She has been there to wipe my tears and pick me off the ground after a hard training session, especially last

year with trying to qualify for the Worlds and Richard passing away.

“I don’t know how she does it. My schedule can get pretty crazy, especially during competition season and she’s right there with me. It’s just been us and she has done everything. I appreciate it all and she has made me who I am.”

Rogers was further reminded of her outstanding year by being named 2016 Youth Female Track and Field Athlete of the Year at the B.C. Athletics banquet. Earlier, the Kajaks presented her with three more major awards.

Her goals in 2017 include qualifying for Junior Pan Ams in Peru and the Canada Summer Games. She also can enjoy the last few months of high school, knowing where she is headed next fall.

“The entire process was very exciting but I’m definitely more relaxed now,” she laughed. “I am pumped for next year and plan to fully enjoy my Grade 12 year.”
