or me, Remembrance Day isn’t just about remembering soldiers’ sacrifices, but also about furthering peace and preventing armed conflict.

I met some veterans at Gilmore Gardens Monday and their wartime stories were striking. I asked about their thoughts on world affairs and the prospect of a Donald Trump presidency. No one seemed optimistic.

Take 92-year-old veteran Stan Primiani: “People are mad. They’re fed up by not getting the things that were so easy to get.

Look at England, where they said enough (Brexit) of these Brussels people telling me I should eat a certain banana or…”

He’s right. There’s a real anger in the West that people are losing control of their country.

Middle-class wages are stagnant, well-paying jobs are being lost, wealth is accumulating in the hands of a few, money laundering is rampant, global conflicts are simmering, and the environment is worsening.

These complaints are coming from all over, even here in Richmond, where there is anger boiling over the global marketing of our real estate and farmland (an almost Bizarro scenario, whereby wealthy investor-class immigrants are the target of anger).

Meanwhile, many argue trade deals have provided negative returns for local workers and austerity measures have impacted education and health. People are feeling abused.

And so, along comes Trump — characterized by Primiani as “honest” and relatable to men — who has come crashing down on free trade and globalization, however justified.

Six years ago, American philosopher Noam Chomsky warned of an “honest and charismatic” figure arising in the current social and economic climate: “If somebody comes along who is charismatic and honest, this country is in real trouble because of the frustration, disillusionment, the justified anger and the absence of any coherent response. What are people supposed to think if someone says, ‘I have got an answer, we have an enemy?’ There [Germany] it was the Jews. Here, it will be the illegal immigrants and the blacks. We will be told that white males are a persecuted minority. We will be told we have to defend ourselves and the honor of the nation. Military force will be exalted,” wrote Chomsky.

I’m to guess a “coherent response” means well-paying jobs, taking money out of politics (the “elites”), affordable housing and healthcare, environmental protections and so forth.

Clearly, Hillary Clinton was not so coherent.

America has chosen its scapegoats. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has chosen to take Canada on a “post-national” trajectory.

But I wonder if, in the absence of real and meaningful coherent response, we will create our own scapegoats.

Lest we forget.

Dear Editor, Re: “Cyclist killed in head-on,” News, Nov. 9 It is with such sadness that I read of the accident that killed one cyclist and severely injured two others in our city this Sunday.

Richmond is frequented every weekend by many cycling clubs, as well as individuals who enjoy our flat, farm roads and beautiful scenery.

Many are training to take part in one of numerous fundraising events, such as the Just Giver 4 PD and the Ride to Conquer Cancer that raise so much money, benefiting all of us in the community.

Having been a member of one such cycling club, I know the roads that make up the popular loop round the outside of Richmond.

These roads are appropriate for

cycling, as they are away from the main arteries of the city. The majority of these roads, other than Railway Avenue and around the airport, do not, however, have any protection for cyclists or indeed motorists. With the volume of cyclists using these roads, we need to consider if that needs to change.

It is worth noting that these are the roads that cyclists use and want to use.

It keeps cyclists, especially those cycling in groups, away from the majority of traffic and is therefore safer for everyone involved.

As a city, we need to recognize that Richmond has a popular cycling route frequented by people of all competencies.

We need to add safety measures appropriate to the nature of these roads, be it signage or bike lanes.

When discussing cycling in a city such

as Richmond, we often talk in terms of commuters and cycle lanes.

We need to consider the novice, weekend warrior cycle club members, as well as the experienced clubs who enjoy our city.

They are often raising significant amounts of money for great causes, enhancing our communities, enjoying each others company and getting some great exercise.

These are all values that Richmond’s citizens embrace and that we should encourage.

As citizens of this community, we need to stop and consider if there is something that we need to change, so that this type of accident never happens again and so that we are keeping our cyclists and motorists safe.

Dear Editor, Re: “Cyclist killed in head-on,” News, Nov. 9 What an unfortunate and senseless tragedy last Sunday morning.

Too often, bad things happen to good and innocent people. I call this a tragedy and not an accident, because through traffic enforcement neglect, this has been years in the making.

Residents will remember when Const.

Jimmy Ng was also senselessly killed on

duty in 2002 by street racers.

At the time, the RCMP requested and received from the City of Richmond a large amount of new speed enforcement equipment to combat speeding.

Since then, traffic enforcement in Richmond has slowly deteriorated to become sporadic at best.

Many drive without fear of enforcement; street racing may be down, but general speeding, texting and ignoring of traffic rules are rampant, especially

on main roads. Anywhere else that I drive (Vancouver, Calgary, Seattle), I am keenly aware of the presence of traffic enforcement. Visibly seeing speed traps and cars pulled over on a daily basis is the best incentive to obey all traffic laws.

I own several bikes myself and refuse to ride on any arterial roads. Unfortunately, Sunday’s tragic event only reinforces this position.

75-year-old gets Met Life, in court According to the Northern California Record, a California woman, Ms. Christine Ramirez, was told some years ago by her MetLife agent to invest in a plan of some sort that could pay her a high return, which she could use to buy insurance and increase her income in retirement. She invested but lost her money, and did not get any insurance.

She was among 99 people who then sued MetLife and, earlier this week, were awarded more than $15 million by a California jury. MetLife and two of its subsidiaries were held liable on four civil counts, including financial elder abuse. In this case, the jury found that MetLife ought to have known about the “investment” plan, which apparently targeted the elderly. It appears that MetLife will likely appeal (which is not a surprise).

Still, this is good news for all seniors. Companies are being held to a higher standard of supervision over agents who are not employees, but are still associated with the company. In addition, this is a victory for seniors who are endlessly targeted by people and financially abused.

Parents' rights don't trump discrimination Dear Editor, Re: “LGBTQ students demand policy change-now,” News, Nov. 9.

It was disturbing, reading comments from students Nathan Lee and Alyssa Osten, about the slurs, such as homo, faggot and tranny, that they and other LGBTQ students had to endure during the school years, just because of who they are.

It takes me back to my school years and the comments we made to other students because of who they were, whether they wore glasses, we thought were nerdy or preferred painting and poetry to soccer and rugby.

I still feel sick about my behaviour all these years later.

Full marks to the school board for not only listening to the students, but promising to act on their demands, although they made no promise of a time line.

Kudos to Couns. Derek Dang and Bill McNulty and MLA John Yap and others for supporting the students by signing their petition.

It was interesting reading the comments of school trustee Jonathan Ho, who said he supports the students’ rights, but then added, the board has received opposition from such parents concerned about “traditional values” and “parents’ rights.”

Since when has traditional values allowed people to discriminate against who they please, in this case members of the LGBTQ community?

Also, do parents’ rights include being able to stop schools providing safe and comforting places for students to feel accepted and safe among friends?

Your freedom of religion stops when our freedom from religion starts!

here was Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Monday night? Richmond.

Lost in a busy, West Coast public itinerary this week — that saw Trudeau announce a five-year, $1.5 billion ocean protection plan Monday afternoon, the day after dining with Norwegian royalty — was a private function at a single-family home in Richmond, the News has learned.

A source, who wanted to remain anonymous, told the News that the event was held by members of the Chinese community at the home and attendees reportedly paid several thousands of dollars to attend.

Steveston-Richmond East MP Joe Peschisolido confirmed there was an event in Richmond Monday night, but told the News he did not attend.

How much money was exchanged has not been confirmed.

The Prime Minister’s Office said any such event was not official business of Trudeau’s

office. On Thursday, the Liberal Party of Canada stated via email that Trudeau had, indeed, attended a private, fundraising reception at a residence in the area.

The PMO publishes the Prime Minister’s itinerary daily.

When the Prime Minister is attending private and personal meetings, it states as much. For instance, last Friday he was in “private meetings” and on Saturday he was in Ottawa for “personal” matters. Monday evening’s itinerary contains no such explanations.

The Liberal Party of Canada has had some controversial connections within Richmond’s Chinese community, namely past party donor and fundraiser Michael Ching, a prominent developer, who is facing deportation to China on allegations of corruption, which he has denied.

Recently, Peschisolido’s law firm has been named in civil lawsuits related to local businessman Paul Oei, who faces allegations by the B.C. Securities Commission that he diverted millions of dollars from a Chinese investor to back his immigrationinvestment business.

ayor Malcolm Brodie is asking for the City of Richmond’s transportation department to provide potential solutions to improve cycling safety on a stretch of River Road in east Richmond that was the site of a horrific deadly crash last Sunday morning.

At a committee meeting Monday, Brodie made the motion. It was supported by Coun. Ken Johnston, who suggested the road be closed to cyclists altogether.

Johnston, who operates a delivery business, said the 23000-block of River Road is known to be dangerous for pedestrians

hirty-five-year-old Ken Chung, of Richmond, has been charged with dangerous driving causing death, according to the Vancouver Police Department.

A “detailed investigation” included evidence that the Audi he was driving was allegedly travelling at least 143 km/h northbound on Oak Street when he plowed into a vehicle attempting to turn left onto 41st Avenue. The collision, on Nov. 14, 2015, killed a 63-year-old man.

Chung had minor wounds and was quickly released from hospital, noted police at the time.

“Remember how you feel at this very moment, because you have changed the future of autism,” Lisogar-Cocchia said to the crowd that included Premier Christy Clark, who helped cut the ceremonial ribbon and toured the $28 million, 58,000-square-foot facility just north of the BCIT Aerospace Campus on the middle arm of the Fraser River.

The province provided $20 million to set up a long-term provincial autism centre, the role of which is to centralize information, among many other needs, added Lisogar-Cocchia.

“A doctor recently said it best to me; families need one phone number, one website and a place to start, as the challenges are vast and serious in autism.”

According to the Pacific Autism family network, there is an estimated 69,000 people living with autism and related disorders in B.C, with approximately 600 new cases each year.

Those using the space will also learn other basic skills, such as making a bed and doing laundry.

One unique aspect of the hub will be its ability to extend its reach across the province through modern communications technology to deliver workshops. As well, additional regional locations developed in the near future outside of the Lower Mainland will deliver information and expertise first-hand.

Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie said it was a great feeling to see the project completed for a condition that, in previous generations, was not widely discussed.

“We have come light years from that time, are far more aware today and have made huge strides,” he said, adding in B.C., the impact autism has on the population, including family members, friends and acquaintances of those diagnosed affects one in 20 people.

“And every (diagnosed) individual is unique in terms of their need for support,” Brodie said. “So, there are tremendous challenges when you are trying to secure for them the appropriate level of service.”

Lisogar-Cocchia said divorce rates and parental suicide are also higher in families that have a child diagnosed with autism.

“When our son was diagnosed with autism it was devastating,” she said. “The doctor actually said to us, ‘Go home and enjoy your other child. He’ll probably never speak.’

“How ridiculous. If that doctor could only see the last 20 years that we have enjoyed our son each and every day,” she said.

hen accountant Steven Flynn heard Canada’s immigration website crashed Tuesday night, as it became clear Donald Trump would be the next U.S. president, he figuratively cleared the desk in his Steveston office to prepare for the arrival of liberal Americans, banging on his door and seeking to move themselves and their assets north.

Flynn and accounting partner Warren Dueck, of W.L. Dueck and Co. LLP, a firm specializing in U.S. and cross-border tax solutions, say they’ve seen this all before — when conservative hawk George W. Bush took control of the White House in 2000.

Flynn said, if Trump follows through on many of his stated goals, he would expect more inquiries than he saw 16 years ago.

Flynn has written a Coles Notes-type guide for Americans to follow in order to understand the intricacies of moving to Canada.

Aside from navigating the complicated application process and then fulfilling residency requirements to become a Canadian, many Americans also need to understand

how their assets will be affected, said Flynn.

“It’s not an easy thing to do,” he told the Richmond News.

“While Canada has many similarities to the U.S., the differences are more significant than French and English on cereal boxes,” wrote Flynn in his statement.

The main thing to understand for any American is that personal taxes are generally higher in Canada, but corporate taxes are less so, noted Flynn.

Should an American wish to retain U.S. citizenship, they will need to file their taxes to Uncle Sam each year, regardless of where they live.

“Typically, they won’t pay U.S. taxes,” due to offsetting tax credits, said Flynn.

In Canada, Americans will see lower payroll taxes and benefit from universal healthcare, although they may be surprised to know in B.C. they will pay a monthly fee (MSP).

“Finally, Canadians are generally polite and courteous to a fault, when they are not playing hockey,” quipped Flynn.

In 2015, the U.S. was the seventh largest source of new permanent Canadian residents, with 7,519 crossing the 49th parallel.

Canada took in 50,816 from The Philippines, which topped the list.

he City of Richmond is tabling recommendations for a new business sign bylaw to lessen the impact of cluttered advertisements on windows and sidewalks.

The “clutter bylaw,” as it has been referred to by many, is the product of city council’s direction to lessen the impact of foreign language signs and unregulated ads, without expressly implementing language provisions.

The clutter bylaw is to address “de-cluttering without a language provision and regulatory gaps in order to modernize and strengthen the bylaw requirements,” according to a staff report to council, which requested the changes after it decided not to create a bylaw that stipulates business signs must be in English or French.

Earlier this year, council approved English requirements (50 per cent) for transit stop advertisements on city-owned property. On the whole, it has, in the past, made the distinction that it will not do the same for signs on private properties.

However, community activist Kerry Starchuk said the clutter bylaw is not addressing the main concerns.

“This isn’t what we, the community, asked for. We asked for English or French on signs,” said Starchuk, who contends the city should be more proactive in promoting a common language, namely English, so citizens can understand one another.

The bylaw proposal will go to public consultation this month, costing $40,000.

The city has spent about $70,000 on a Cantonese-speaking sign inspector this year.

Richmond director of administration and compliance Cecilia Achiam’s report to council stated the inspector has been “indispensable” by providing real-time translations for business owners.

Complaints from residents about unregulated signage have gone beyond those related to foreign language, noted Achiam.

Under the bylaw proposals, inflatable signs, billboards, flag signs, signs attached to vehicles and portable signs will not be permitted. Sandwich board signs will also be banned unless for opening promotions.

The bylaw proposes to allow no more than 50 per cent of a window covered in advertisements. Anything more than 25 per cent coverage will require a special permit. Permits will be required for banners and free-standing (such as real estate) signs, as well. The bylaw also proposes to limit the size of linear storefront signs.

The bylaw will also address open house signs, a common complaint of many citizens.

Under the proposals, open house signs may not be placed on public property, are limited to three per event (and they must be placed at separate locations) and will be limited to one hour before, during and one hour after the event.

The bylaw will be enforced on a complaint basis and business owners may face fines for violations.

It has yet to be determined if or how existing signs will be grandfathered into the new bylaw, noted Achiam.

Recalling day when his face didn't fit

t was Sept. 9, 1939 — six days after Great Britain had declared war with Germany — and 21-year-old Tommy Wong was already plotting a route from his hometown of Victoria to Vancouver.

Buoyed by the news that his country had officially joined the Second World War, Canadian-born Wong sailed across the Strait of Georgia and marched straight into the Royal Canadian Air Force recruiting office in Downtown Vancouver.

There was, however, one major obstacle standing in the way of plane-loving Wong serving the nation he loved — his Chinese ethnicity.

“I wanted to join, but they said no; even though I had training (as a teacher),” said Wong, who was in the building trade at the time.

“It was the law; no Chinese allowed. They said I was more than qualified, but I was Chinese, so…”

Disappointed, but not completely surprised — in those days, Chinese people weren’t allowed to participate in sports and were restricted at public places, such as the cinema and swimming pool — Wong took the ferry back to his native Victoria and his job as a building contractor.

Other divisions of the Canadian armed forces, such as the army, had allowed citizens of Chinese ethnicity, but not the air force, which is where Wong’s heart lay.

However, more than two years later, on the fateful day of Dec. 7, 1941, when the Japanese decided to attack Pearl Harbor, his life was about to change forever.

A couple of months after the attack, Wong received a letter from the very same recruiting office which had snubbed his offer of help, requesting his presence in Vancouver as soon as possible. “(The RCAF), all of a sudden, wanted me,” smiled Wong, who will turn 99 next week, as he sat at the very back of Richmond Public Library, bedecked in a blazer with all his medals.

“I was in — and way before they were officially accepting Chinese (June 1942); I was the first (of Chinese ethnicity) to be accepted into the RCAF.” Wong, who has called Richmond home for most of his life, recalled feeling “real good,” at the time, despite being sent packing earlier due to his Asian heritage.

“They asked if I wanted to be air crew or ground crew. My heart was strictly in flying and also, this would be a chance to help bomb the Japanese; so I was well motivated,” he said, when asked how he felt about only being called up due to the attack on Pearl Harbor.

“They accepted me immediately and sent me to Edmonton for training.”

n Too disciplined to discriminate

After three months training as an aircraft mechanic, Wong was sent to St. Thomas, Ont., — where there was an air force school — for more advanced training.

The reaction through the ranks to seeing a Chinese-Canadian in the RCAF for the first time was surprisingly uneventful, as far as Wong can recall.

“When you enter a disciplined school, your mind has to be focused on the training, especially in the services,” said Wong, momentarily replacing his requisite smile with a stern grimace.

“No matter what you are ordered to do, you don’t talk back.

There was no disagreeing with anyone.

“You go there, they close the door and everyone does what they’re told; no matter how they felt about (seeing a ChineseCanadian). I felt I was accepted straight away.”

Chinese-Canadian vets are special unit Alan Campbell

nce a month, two Richmondites — 84-year-old George Ing and 98-year-old Tommy Wong — escape the confines of Lulu Island and head north, over the bridge into Vancouver to meet a very special crew.

Ing and Wong, both veterans of the Royal Canadian Air Force, are two members of a still thriving Pacific Unit 280, made up of Chinese-Canadian veterans; 14 of which, including Wong (who’s the oldest), are survivors of the Second World War. Pacific Unit 280, which meets in the same Vancouver restaurant every month, was, and still is, the only legion of its kind in Canada.

All of the vets from the 1939-45 conflict are, of course, well into their 90s; but their numbers dwindle every year.

“After the Second World War, many Chinese-Canadians returned and still didn’t have full citizen rights, but they wanted to form their own unit and legion,” said Ing, a retired telecommunications Lt. Col. with 32 years of service, who has called Richmond home since 1987 and lives in a Steveston condo overlooking Britannia Heritage Shipyards.

“They went to ANAF (Army, Navy & Air Force), which accepted them and they set up their own Pacific Unit 280; still the only one of its kind in Canada.

“Fourteen are vets (of the Second World War), but, obviously, we keep losing them;

all of them are over 90.”

As well as being members of Pacific Unit 280, the group also helps run the Vancouver-based Chinese Canadian Military Museum Society, which has a hallway and small room inside the Chinese Cultural Centre in Chinatown.

“We combine the monthly museum meeting with our lunch,” said Victoria-born Ing, who’s the director of the society.

“The thought (in setting up the society in 1998) was to preserve the artifacts from the Chinese-Canadian contributions through the wars.

“The vets are passing away with every year, so it’s important to preserve their stories as much as we can. We’re trying to get their relations to participate as much as possible, as it’s them we will be relying upon very soon.

“When I speak to groups of Chinese immigrants, they have no idea of the contributions made by Chinese-Canadian people during the wars; this museum tells those stories.

“We had losses in Germany and France; we had many Chinese losses in the RCAF, taking part in bombing raids; there are some amazing stories here.”

As a result of their sacrifice in the Second World War, Chinese-Canadians were finally able to claim the opportunities and rights afforded other Canadians. They were offered citizenship and the right to vote. Those privileges led, in turn, to membership in professional societies such as law, engineering and medicine — important careers previously closed to Asians.

Wong: Treated differently as an RCAF aircraft inspector From page 12 Wong said he remembered feeling “very happy” during his early training and doesn’t recall any discrimination.

“That was a new feeling, to get treated the same as everyone else,” he said.

“It’s different from when I was in Victoria, where I was discriminated against; only being allowed to do certain things and all that.”

Wong graduated first class and was then sent me to an air base in Calgary, where he spent a further year learning his new trade and quickly rose through the ranks to sergeant and then to an inspector in the Aeronautical Inspection Detachment (AID).

“There was only one of us in the base; it was very highly regarded.”

While training as an aircraft inspector, Wong made sure the

“When I graduated, with very high marks, they asked me where I wanted to be posted; so I said Vancouver. I was posted to Jericho Beach and Sea Island,” said Wong.

Jericho had all the seaplanes, he recalled, while Sea Island had the Kittyhawks.

“Sea Island was a very important place; there was talk of the Japanese attacking the west coast of Canada.”

the RCAF wings, Wong waved his hand and laughed.

“People’s reactions can be funny; but most are impressed.

People didn’t really talk to me too much until I got my (inspector job),” said Wong.

“A lot of them were highly educated, but they were used to the local laws of not respecting Chinese-Canadians and were used to us being cooks or garbage collectors.”

Asked what he thinks of conflict across the globe right now, the light faded a little from Wong’s face.

“I feel the world is just as bad, if not worse. I think we’re still waiting for the war to end all wars.”

Wong, who lives with his second wife in a condo on Minoru Boulevard, will be attending the main Remembrance Day ceremony at Victory Square in Vancouver before heading over to a service for Chinese-Canadians at the cenotaph on Keefer and Columbia streets, where there is a Chinese war memorial.

inety-three year-old Gilmore Gardens resident and Second World War veteran Jim Gray shudders to think what the world will become for his great grandchildren.

And that was a day before businessman and reality-TV star Donald Trump became president-elect of the United States.

Among Gray and his neighbours — who comprise the “Greatest Generation” — Trump’s cavalier attitude toward military expansion, his fever pitch for more policing, his dismissal of human rights and disparaging comments towards minority groups and women, are not things that are shared with enthusiasm.

Nevertheless, Trump sure has them talking this week, which also happens to coincide with Remembrance Day. To mark the special day at the independent living facility for seniors, Gilmore Gardens’ caretakers have set up a table in the lobby for residents to share the likes of family photos, books, poems and other memorabilia related to past wars.

“To see and read their stories helps us remember and recognize those who served and sacrificed,” said Gardens marketing manager Lisa Welbourn.

“It gives us insight into their young, naïve, and brave lives — those who fought for our peace and freedom. This gives us hope that all they fought for holds true.”

In the lounge, the Richmond News sat at a table with Scotland-born Gray, who loaded ammunition for the Royal Air Force.

Joining Gray to reminisce about the war were Stan Primiani, 92, a veteran of the Royal Canadian Navy and Betty Lefroy, 93, who, each Remembrance Day, recalls the efforts of her now late husband Tony Lefroy, who also served in the navy.

Tony died six years ago.

“That’s life,” said Betty, whose eyes glistened when she recalled meeting her husband and the scary times when he set off for the navy, from Edmonton.

Like Betty’s husband, Gray didn’t want to go into the army, so he asked to go into the air force instead and became an armourer.

“I looked after any rifle, guns, small canons — maybe 20 mm — that shot out of planes,” said Gray.

At age 17, Primiani avoided the army, too.

“I wanted to join the navy. Either you come back in one piece or you don’t come back at all. So, there was that kind of mentality,” he said.

Primiani went into remarkable detail about the time he spent at sea on the HMCS Stadacona.

“Boy, that was a tough thing when that North Sea was rough,” he said.

“But I don’t want to go into all of it because sometimes it’s not pleasant,” said Primiani.

Decades after fighting Nazis, the three were asked about the present state of global affairs.

think Donald Trump is worthy of anything. I think he is a despicable man,” said Lefroy.

But Primiani was less emotional and more explanatory about the situation.

“I’m not for him or for (Clinton), but you can see the mentality (Trump) has in business. . . A lot of the men can think that way,” he said.

“One thing people can see is, he’s an honest man. He’s not a typical politician,”

added Primiani.

“He’s not honest,” interjected Lefroy.

Gray chuckled at the devolving conversation and was asked if the war was worth it.

“There was hope then, after WWII, for a while; then things went downhill,” he said.

And its legacy?

“I think it’s still strong in places like Britain and Canada. Elsewhere, I’m not so sure of,” he said.

hen two RCMP patrol cars are sent to deal with a situation, you know something pretty serious is going on.

That was the case last year during the Richmond Christmas Fund’s (RCF) inaugural Toy Drive - also known as the “stuff the cruiser” event - when an abundance of toy donations spilled out of the vehicle, for lack of room, and another was called in to gather the overflowing generosity of Richmond residents.

“It was extremely successful,” said Bhreandain Clugston, manager of RCF, which is organized under the auspices of Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives. “And we’re doing it again on Nov. 19.”

On that day, from 8 – 12 p.m. at Ironwood Plaza (11666 Steveston Highway), the public is invited to bring down a donation of a new, unwrapped toy and, in return, enjoy a pancake breakfast and know they’ve helped fill what is becoming an increasing need in Richmond.

“It’s funny, but many people believe that Richmond is this totally affluent community, when, in fact, there are a lot of people who require assistance, especially at Christmas time,” Clugston said.

The numbers tell the story, he added.

“Last year, the Richmond Christmas Fund helped a total of 2,211 people. That was up from 1,433 the year before.”

One of the largest groups within that sizable increase was the senior population. In 2015, RCF assisted 57 seniors. Last year, the total ballooned to 312.

“Times are tough for a lot of people in Richmond,” he said.

“There’s a lot of people out there experiencing hardship.”

Those who do find themselves in that situation can register with the RCF to receive help and brighten the holiday season.

Local, low-income individuals and families have four, separate days in the coming weeks to apply at Richmond Caring Place (7000 Minoru Blvd.) – Nov. 26, Dec. 3, 10, and 17, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

On that day, applicants will need to provide picture ID, CareCards for all family members, proof of Richmond residency with either a utility bill or rent receipt and a document indicating they are currently enrolled in a government income assistance program.

eadlines have been flooded with sensational titles such as “too toxic to touch” or “overdose crisis is ‘our ebola,’” heavily focused on the harms of the “silent killer.”

What more might we expect? Fentanyl is the current hot drug topic. There is no doubt that significant and lasting harms are occurring due to the increased presence of fentanyl.

However, we must be careful about reactionary attitudes that further stigmatize and point to a problem with a “drug” — in this case, fentanyl.

The recent coverage of the fentanyl crisis seems to miss asking the question, “why are people using?”

Only highlighting the harms does not make any impact on the problematic use and overdoses that continue to occur.

Highly reactive campaigns focus on the tragic and extreme consequences. History teaches us that fear-based approaches have not been effective in preventing problematic substance use.

If anything, it can cause detrimental outcomes. Note the recent report that UBC students are not accessing lifesaving overdose response (Naloxone) kits for fear of identifying with “drug users.”

This is why prevention priorities in Richmond have shifted away from programs that focus on the dangers of substances. Instead, Richmond needs to be pushing an agenda of creating healthy and whole individuals, families and communities who are ready and

willing to support the (often) marginalized individuals who are using and overdosing on drugs such as fentanyl.

When people feel supported, empowered, connected, and valued, substance use drops.

Yes, harm reduction strategies are necessary for those who are actively using.

However, in response to the prevalence of drugs such as fentanyl, the best prevention conversations that can be happening are about how we can include and support everyone from all life scenarios, and champion healthy and whole individuals and communities.

When these conversations do not occur, we find people suffer. Let’s consider the conditions in people’s lives that create motivation to use substances where great risk is involved.

Why people are using is answered when we ask if people feel connected and supported. How do we develop and share skills to practice emotional, social, spiritual, and physical health? Are we creating conditions for all individuals to thrive?

Fentanyl is indeed dangerous, and precautions must be taken for active users to stay safe. Yet, if we really endeavor to prevent overdoses, let alone illicit drug use to begin with, let us engage in the vital conversation of what is happening in people’s lives and how Richmond can collectively create and participate in a society where all people are supported and included.

W

hen I first started writing about wine in the early 1980s, B.C. wines were usually described as either terrible or at best, barely drinkable. Thankfully, they have evolved into remarkable wines; some are world-class. Today’s local wines make both the producer and the consumer proud.

If there is one person who has been instrumental in this giant leap forward for the B.C. wine industry, it’s Harry McWatters. He founded one of the first Estate Wineries, Sumac Ridge in Summerland in 1980. He also helped create the Okanagan Wine Festival and became the first chair of the B.C. Wine Institute.

McWatters was also instrumental in founding VQA Canada, a trade association that spearheaded the development of national wine standards for Canadian vintners and served as the first chairman.

Although McWatters retired from his role as president of Sumac Ridge, he has now evolved into president and CEO of Encore Vineyards which markets wine under three brands: Evolve Cellars, Time Winery, and McWatters’ Collection.

McWatters’ Evolve Cellars 2015 Pinot Blanc ($14.99) is a delicious, dry white with a fragrant nose of tree and stone fruit and a flavour of apple and pear with crisp acidity and minerality. I really enjoy Pinot Blancs, which are often like an un-oaked Chardonnay but priced better. They are a sleeper when it comes to an easy-to-enjoy wine that

is often overlooked by wine sippers. Serve with fish cakes, trout almandine, and onion tart.

Now, it’s time to switch colours and try an excellent red, the 2013 Time Meritage ($25). McWatters’ Sumac Ridge was the first Canadian winery to produce a Meritage which is a Bordeaux style blend.

Because only wines produced in Bordeaux France can be labeled as Bordeaux, a name had to be coined by combining the terms merit and age. Like Bordeaux, Meritages are premium wines of merit, that can age to become wonderful.

The Time Meritage is a dark cuvee of 50 per cent Merlot, 30 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20 per cent Cabernet Franc.

Expect a bouquet of blackberry and black currant, and a hint of oaky smoke. In your glass enjoy a complex rich flavour of dark fruit, coffee, chocolate, licorice, forest floor, and vanilla. Although it is only three years old, it has developed well and is smooth as silk. It will certainly age further over the next few years. Enjoy with lamb shanks in red wine with prunes and cumin.

Another Meritage to savour is the McWatters’ Collection 2013 Meritage. Like the Time Meritage, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc grown in McWatters’ Black Sage Vineyard in Oliver are blended together in this big and elegant red.

The fact it earned a Bronze Medal at this year’s National Wine Awards of Cana-da is good to know but the proof that it is worth trying is “in the pudding.”

ary Chang is comfortable taking baby steps with his Richmond-based business venture.

And he’s hoping investors and customers, alike, will follow along, wearing the west coast lifestyle-inspired shoes his firm, SKYE Footwear is hoping will become a fashion hit for comfort-loving customers.

That’s why he’s decided to enlist the help of a Kickstarter crowd fundraising campaign to get his line of footwear to market rather than rush a wholesale investment that tapped into his family’s import/export and manufacturing business, which specializes in sporting goods that includes skateboards, in-line skates and ski helmets.

“What we lacked was retail experience,” Chan said. “That’s what I hope to develop with SKYE.” So far, SKYE has raised just over half of the $30,000 it has set as a goal on Kickstarter with about a week to go before it closes. And when n Gary Chang that happens, Chan said he’s confident the unique nature of the shoes will further draw in other buyers.

“What I wanted to do is create, somewhat under the radar, something different that reflected the lifestyle here in Vancouver,” he said. “We also wanted to fill a gap we saw in the shoe market, by producing a show which fit a variety of situations, from casual to dress.”

Using his real life experience that sees him on the road to attend marketing and trade shows for about half of the calendar year, Chan, 30, said living out of a suitcase for such long periods of time forces you to pack light. And that means getting plenty of utility out of your shoes.

“I couldn’t find many that suited themselves to a wide variety of needs,” he said.

“And those that did market themselves as

comfortable, were pretty lacking. They may look nice, but were not supportive.”

In came the design for SKYE which has taken about 18 months of development in the company’s Richmond studio and resulted, in part, from the world of stand-up paddle boarding.

“It’s a slip in, slip on design that uses a lace-less, trademarked Loop-Lok design which helps it be form-fitting and not at all bulky,” Chan said. “It’s easy and convenient to wear.”

Phoenix Molecular Designs, develops cancer therapies by inhibiting kinases, a class of enzymes that have proven to be the most tractable drug targets in oncology, was nominated in the best innovation category.

onths of hard work culminates with the biggest event of the competitive season for about 30 Connaught Skating members this weekend in Kelowna.

The Richmond club will be wellrepresented at the B.C./Yukon Sectional Championships.

For the younger skaters, the stage doesn’t get any greater as they put their progress in front of judges. For others, there is hope this is a springboard for an opportunity to represent B.C. at national events, starting with the Skate Canada Challenge, Nov. 30-Dec. 4 in Montreal.

Samantha Yeung will be competing in a third different level in as many years at Sectionals. The McKinney Elementary student was third in Pre-Juvenile in 2014 and earned silver in the 12 and Under Juvenile category a year ago. Now, she will be skating in Pre-Novice for the first

time and has a chance to go to Montreal.

“I love jumping and performing,” smiled Yeung. “My goals are having clean jumps and skating with fast speeds. I’m also getting used to skating two programs now.”

Nine-year-old David Li will be making his Sectionals debut in the Juvenile Men’s category.

His competitive career is already off to a promising start and he knows exactly what he has to do in Kelowna. He is a product of Connaught’s Junior Academy program.

“I enjoy the freedom of skating and performing in front of judges,” said the Whiteside Elementary student. “I always make sure I smile at them too.”

The Connaught skaters got a taste of what they are in for by competing at an event in Kamloops last month. The grunt work for all the athletes came over the summer with plenty of fine tuning since September.

“The summer is different because the kids don’t have school and it can be so intensive,” explained Murphy. “It’s such a productive time of year for us where September and October it’s more about balance as the focus is on their education and sport. The kids choose to be that dedicated to both and I admire them for that.”

Murphy didn’t want to make any bold predications on a medal count in Kelowna even though the club enjoyed an impressive haul a year ago. Instead the focus will be on continued development.

“A kid like David is super talented who loves skating a lot. It’s time to throw him into his first provincial championship and see how he does. I think he will be great,” added Murphy.

“Samantha’s progress has been amazing. But now she is competing against 50 girls and it’s a total different world.

Success is relative development and you have to keep your goals in perspective.”

Gabby Jayme concluded her decorated field hockey career at UBC in grand style — helping the Thunderbirds win their sixth consecutive national championship in Toronto.

The Little Flower Academy graduate scored in the 61st minute to put her team on even terms as UBC went on to post a 2-1 victory in a shootout over the Victoria Vikes. The result added to the Thunderbirds’ growing record of 18 national titles.

The Vikes’ roster features McMath graduate Delany Booker — a third-year forward. It was Victoria’s 12th national silver medal in the program’s history.

Meanwhile on the soccer pitch, Hugh Boyd graduates Amelia Crawford and Emma Kallner helped the Thunderbirds move one step closer to defending their national title.

UBC re-captured the Canada West Championship last weekend in Langley, knocking off host Trinity Western University 3-0 in the final.

Crawford, a second-year forward, scored what proved to be the winning goal in the 26th minute. It was the Fusion F.C. (B.C. Premier Soccer League) product’s fifth goal of the campaign which is tied for third on the team.

Kallner, a third-year defender, has been a mainstay on the Thunderbirds’ backline. The BCPSL Coastal F.C. Gabby Jayme graduate has started in all 19 games she has dressed for this season.

The Thunderbirds are now in Wolfville, Nova Scotia where they are the top seed for the 30th CIS Nationals.

Across town at Burnaby Mountain, forward Riley Pang is wrapping up his impressive first season with the Simon Fraser University men’s soccer team.

The Steveston-London graduate was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) Freshman of the Year after scoring four goals for the 14-1-2 Clan.

SFU has already earned GNAC honours and has been made the No. 1 seed in the West Region for the NCAA Division Two National Tournament. The Clan will face the winner of No. 4 Sonoma State and No. 5 Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday.

The women’s basketball season is just getting started and Tia Tsang has wasted little time in making an impact with SFU. The freshman guard from McRoberts scored 14 points in just 17 minutes of action to help the Clan cap a three-game toad trip to Anaheim with a 72-67 win over the Colorado Mines. Tsang went a sizzling 4-for-5 from three-point range.

She also had 11 points in an 84-77 loss to Cal Baptist.

Colts thrive in underdog role to win Lower Mainland ‘AA’ title T

he Richmond Colts senior boys soccer team has produced its biggest feat in two decades by capturing the Lower Mainland AA Championship.

The Colts completed the feat with a well-played 1-0 victory over the John Oliver Jokers on Tuesday in East Vancouver. The result also sends them to the Provincial AA Championships, Nov. 21-23 in Burnaby.

Goalkeeper Emerson Cooke recorded his second shutout of the playoffs and received excellent defensive play in front of him from Philip Gundic, Matthew Chan, Abraham Pawlik, Stephen Gonzales and Anton Poburko.
