ou’ve gotta love the irony.

While the Lung Association is busy staging the “pop up” campaign #TakeaBreather at Richmond Centre to bring awareness to lung health, half of Richmond is gagging on the putrid fumes emanating from Harvest Power’s organic waste recycling plant.

Inhaling a stench so strong that people have to barricade themselves indoors hardly seems a fitting way to celebrate what the Lung Association has dubbed Lung Month.

According to the association: • 1 in 5 Canadians struggle with chronic breathing problems; • Chronic lung disease is not only a leading cause of death but also the number one reason for adult emergency visits; • B.C. researchers predict chronic lung disease is set to overwhelm our hospital systems if we don’t take stock.

And, as one letter writer notes, you can bet all those noxious gases and nasty microbes creating the smell are also finding their way into our respiratory systems.

There are a few things about this situation that make me choke. The first is why the City of Richmond has decided not to appeal Metro Vancouver’s decision to grant Harvest Power a permit to continue operating for another four years, despite a huge number of complaints. According to the mayor, the city has received confidential legal advice that such an appeal would be unsuccessful. I get the legal advice part, but why confidential?

Our government has made a critical decision about something as fundamental as the air we breathe; we have a right to know the full rationale.

Secondly, while the city is backing down, Harvest Power is charging ahead. In fact, it has the gall to appeal the part of the permit that holds it accountable for complying with the conditions it actually agrees should be met. Harvest Power spokespeople have bent over backwards assuring residents they feel our pain and that the status quo is not acceptable. It points to plans that will ensure improvement. Yet, it balks at having to face enforcement if those changes don’t happen.

That hardly instills confidence.

The final insult is not just the fact it is now up to concerned citizens to take on this sizeable, American corporation, but that they have to pay for the pleasure of doing so by registering an appeal at $25 a pop. Granted, it’s not a king’s ransom — but, really? Citizens have to pay to do the job of our regulators?

Most infuriating is the fact this is such a solvable problem. The technology and knowhow is out there to ensure the facility doesn’t smell. Solving one environmental hazard by recycling needn’t create another. But to do it right, we need strong regulation that ensures this “green” company recycles some of its profit into making itself a good neighbour.

Dear Editor, The stink over Richmond has now reached new intolerable levels. It’s gotten even worse since the recycling plant got approval to foul our air more than before.

Windows cannot be opened, sitting on one’s patio is now out of the question.

Even driving along Highway 91 is so bad, one starts to gag.

How can a company be allowed to do this?

The real question here is where are our elected officials? Where is our mayor, who should be shutting this plant down? Does he not care about the people who elected him? What about our local MLAs, do they not live in their own ridings and not smell this?

This stench cannot be healthy as it is caused by all types of bacteria that must be floating in the air also.

Our politicians must stand up, speak out, and support the people of Richmond who are having to put up with this.

This is no longer a good place to live, and we should put out a warning to all tourists and visitors to bring masks as the air is bad.

Dear Editor, Below is a letter I composed recently and forwarded to those involved to try to stop Harvest Power’s constant assault on our olfactory and respiratory systems.

Obviously, it didn’t make a difference, because in the weeks following, the stench has been worse and more frequent.

It has become apparent that our mayor, council and Metro Vancouver, couldn’t care less about our air quality in Richmond, and a class action lawsuit needs to be launched to rectify this situation.

My family has been in Richmond for four generations and never have we had to live through having a daily, unbreathable stench. We have seen farms come and go and lived through the cannery days, but Harvest Power is causing life in Richmond to be unbearable. Should we have to move from a city we’ve known for so long because an organics processing plant has disregarded the needs of residents?

How would you feel if you lived in Richmond and, during the hot summer, you can’t open your windows because your home fills with a putrid stench (and that is day or night). Trust me, your frustration would grow into terrible resentment.

What about people with lung conditions or breathing issues? Does this constant stench give them grounds for litigation?

My husband and I live in south Richmond, my parents live in central Richmond, my uncle lives in Burkeville and we have all been affected by this unbreathable stench.

On many occasions, I have contacted Metro Vancouver Air Quality, as has my mother, only to be told to keep track of when the stench occurs. Even though we go to the trouble of doing this, nothing changes.

Harvest Power is negligent in its procedures and should not be given the permit to continue. How can places suck as Port Kells, Surrey manage to have a zero emissions facility, but Harvest Power continues to be permitted to fill our lives, homes, lungs and noses with their unbelievable negligence? This whole situation stinks.

Dear Editor, I would like to vent my frustration regarding the continuing putrid odour fouling our atmosphere, causing a considerable lack of “quality of life” in our hometown, Richmond, since Harvest Power, an American company, started up their operation, supposedly to better our environmental footprint.

We attended their meeting in early spring, when the company owner was in attendance. He seemed very concerned about our complaints and our frustration with the bad smell that was emitting from his operation, promising he would rectify the problem very quickly.

We were told we should call when we could smell this stink, and report it, keeping a log of the times and days this occured. Really?!

We had been doing that since the start of his operation. People from South Vancouver, Delta, Burnaby, Steveston, all different areas, depending on the way the wind is blowing, were very unhappy.

We were shocked to see his permit was granted for another four years, when allowable amounts of particulates and noxious gases, were being totally ignored. We were then told if we wished to appeal this decision we could go online, and look at the 60 page documentation, then register our appeal for a $25 registration fee.

Why would you bother when they ignore all verbal objections. This is a complete waste of time and breath.

Wise up, Richmond, this is totally unacceptable.

Distributing estate money during a lawsuit?

Last week, an Estate beneficiary was granted an Order allowing an interim distribution to him of about half his bequest under a Will. In the case, Davis v. Burns Estate, the applicant was a friend of the deceased and a 20% beneficiary.

Last year, the deceased’s disinherited daughter launched a lawsuit seeking to vary the deceased’s Will, and she opposed the interim distribution. The Court allowed it.

The Court considered the age of the applicant beneficiary (76 years) and the deceased’s wishes expressed in her Will, and held that even if the daughter is successful in her lawsuit (which had been inactive for a year), the Will likely would not be varied to such a degree that an interim distribution would put the Estate at risk.

This result was just. Normally, interim distributions in Estates are reasonable provided that sufficient funds are held back to allow for taxes. It is surely easier when no beneficiary disputes the Will, but if a dispute of almost any type arises, Court scrutiny such as in this case is important.

‘Don’t walk’ signal, a cash grab?

Dear Editor: (Open letter to the City of Richmond) Re: “Jaywalkers could face $50 fine to help reduce pedestrian fatalities,” News, Oct. 26.

The Richmond News says the new $50 jaywalking fines will apply when one ignores a “Don’t Walk” signal.

Is this why the city has installed “Don’t Walk” lights across mall driveways and the like, to increase revenue through exagerrated claims of culpability?

I was taught, in school, a logical, common sense rule: cross only at corners, and use the main red/green signals when they’re in place. I’ve done this, with extra cautions as indicated by traffic and/or weather conditions.

I’m one of the rare wheelchair users in Richmond who has not been hit by a car. (Many still get hit while both following the pedestrian signal, and “making eye contact,” as per city stickers on signal button poles.)

Surely there’s an app for that Dear Editor, On my recent sojourns around our community, I have seen some disturbing things that I hope are just momentary anomalies and not signs of possible trends.

The other day at a restaurant I saw a young couple sit through an entire meal without once taking out their phones to check for text messages. They spent the whole time talking to each other! A few days later, in a different restaurant, I saw a family of four (two of them teenagers) do exactly the same thing: talking and laughing together and apparently enjoying each other’s company.

Then, on a trip on the Canada Line, I witnessed two strangers strike-up a conversation with each other, and then a young man gave up his seat to an elderly woman with a cane.

And this morning at a local mall, I saw a man sitting on a bench reading a newspaper — you know, one of those things made out of paper with writing

People were staring at him, but he didn’t seem to care.

Do these people not get it?

We have been working so hard to shake free of such old-fashioned habits and attitudes and yet we still see people refusing to abide by the prevailing conventions of the day.

Perhaps, we should feel some compassion for them and when we see anything like this happening, we should undertake an intervention by waving our pads and phones in front of their eyes so they can see for themselves what the real world is all about.

We have to do what we can to ensure that such behaviours do not become so commonplace that they start to really interfere with our lives. People actually talking to each other — actually talking to strangers! I can only hope that there is an App out there that will help us deal with such issues.

Open letter to Mayor and Council, Re: “City won’t appeal permit,” News, Nov. 2.

I am very dismayed to hear that the city is not going to appeal the (Harvest Power) permit because of legal cost.

Our city stinks.

My visitors cannot believe we have to put up with this. We cannot go out our front door, enjoy our yards, or even open our windows. We cannot enjoy our parks and dykes.

Imagine breathing in noxious emissions. Children and babies are being exposed to toxins.

Our health is in danger... and you worry about cost.

Heres a thought... give up junkets to sister cities and trips all over the place.

Suspend taxpayer-funded meals... which include liquor, and street parties (which we cannot enjoy anyway with the stench) and get your priorities straight.

This is the most important threat to our city and you are not doing your job. Mr. McNulty wants to assure us the odors are not a result of city council... but I think something indeed stinks at city council.

Shame on you all.

ight dogs were found abandoned on Rice Mill Road in southeast Richmond, near Ironwood, Saturday and are now in a Surrey animal shelter.

A woman named Yuana (who wouldn’t provide her last name), the founder and director of Dhana Metta Rescue Society, said a friend found the dogs stuffed in a crate and brought them to her.

Yuana said she has contacted the Richmond Animal Protection Society to provide information on the dogs, which are on a two-week “stray hold” until they are reunited with their owners or put into a foster home for behavioural assessments.

Yuana described the abandonment as “really weird” considering some of the dogs looked cared for.

“They’re pretty friendly,” she said.

However, Yuana speculated the dogs may have been used to breed puppies as two showed signs of recent pregnancy. “Perhaps things got out of control,” she said.

Richmond to host fentanyl forum A community forum focusing on the current opioid overdose epidemic in the Lower Mainland is being hosted in Richmond on Wednesday, Nov. 16.

In a bid to help people understand the issue, Richmond Fire-Rescue along with BC Emergency Health Services, Richmond District Parents Association, Richmond RCMP, Richmond School District and Vancouver Costal Health (VCH) are partnering to provide the town hall event from 7 to 8 p.m. at Richmond Secondary.

The forum will consist of a 30-minute presentation, followed by a question and answer period with the panel of representatives from the aforementioned agencies.

“According to (VCH), over 500 people in the province of British Columbia have died as a result of drug overdoses since the beginning of 2016,” said Richmond Fire-Rescue deputy chief Kim Howell. “(The) majority of these deaths were associated with fentanyl, which is why this forum is so important for Richmond residents.”

ith Remembrance Day approaching, the Richmond Poppy Fund campaign is underway. While now is the time to make a donation and purchase a poppy, the fund helps veterans all year round.

“I see the veterans and the hardships they go through,” says Carol O’Dell, chairperson of the Richmond Poppy Fund, whose campaign is under way. “We go that extra mile to make sure they get what they need.”

The poppy is an emblem throughout the Commonwealth that commemorates Remembrance Day and honours members of the armed forces who have fallen in the line of

duty. Each year, the Richmond Poppy Fund fundraising drive takes place with assistance from the Army, Navy and Air Force Cadets between the latter part of October and November 11, Remembrance Day.

About 20 hard-working volunteers make it happen. The fund helps veterans as well as those in active service who may be injured and need extra help.

“I know at any given time there are likely 20 veterans in the hospital. They live in this community—Richmond Hospital is their hospital,” says O’Dell.

Government wants City: Volunteer cops to track your clicks need gun training Graeme Wood

he City of Richmond is backing a proposal by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to have the Insurance Corporation of B.C. track the number of kilometres you drive each year.

The data will be used to improve transportation, land-use and greenhouse gas reduction plans within the city, according to a staff report that was approved by city council last week.

The city contends that because vehicles account for about 60 per cent of all greenhouse gas emissions in Richmond, it is important to understand precisely the driving behaviours of its residents in order to effectively put forth plans to reduce such emissions.

Presently, there is a gap in accurate information on the overall use of vehicles, the report states. For instance, TransLink surveys indicated more people used the Canada Line to go to Vancouver between 2008 and 2011. However, the Ministry of Transportation estimated the overall vehicle kilometres travelled in Richmond increased in that time.

The city is eager to track kilometres on a neighbour-

hood basis to see how the likes of densification (such as more townhouses along arterial roads and an increase in subdivided lots and secondary suites), increased bus service and improved cycling paths affect driving habits.

It is also argued that tracking kilometres will be a prerequisite for a regionwide mobility pricing initiative (charging drivers for the amount of kilometres they drive), something Mayor Malcolm Brodie is keen on.

With the end of the AirCare program, there is even less opportunity to derive such data, the report notes.

The concept was initially proposed by municipal politicians at a conference in 2010. Then, the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General raised concerns.

It is said that concerns surrounding privacy can be mitigated with aggregate data collection that doesn’t identify drivers.

At this time, costs of such a program are unknown, the report states and there may be administrative challenges to track three million vehicles in the province.

Self-reported data may be a solution, according to the report, should the information not affect the driver’s insurance costs (thus reducing the risk of fraud).

The city is backing a proposal by the Union of B.C. Municipalities to introduce a three-tier training program that would allow auxiliary constables to increase the number of duties they perform — such as public ceremonies, bike patrols and traffic and crowd control — without supervision.

Under the plan, auxiliary constables would be limited in the amount of hours they are on duty.

For instance, in the third tier, a constable would receive more training than in the first — including firearms familiarization training — and be able to perform general

duty patrol, such as participating in traffic check stops. But they would also be limited to 144 hours per year and have a midnight curfew.

The proposal does not call for fully arming the constables, although McNulty said it’s a “possibility” in the future, considering they had once been armed before.

McNulty said the changes imposed in Ottawa were unfortunate as Richmond’s program was “better than most others.”

In 2014, Richmond’s auxiliary officers logged 11,805 hours with the regular force.

To August, 2016, the auxiliary officers had logged 2,639 hours.

In late 2014, the RCMP mandated all auxiliary officers to be supervised after the murder of unarmed soldier Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, who was on ceremonal duty at the National War Memorial outisde the parliament buildings in Ottawa. In January 2016, the RCMP went a step further by banning all supervised ride-along duties for auxiliary constables.

An internal survey of the auxiliary force showed that 92 per cent of respondents disagreed with the changes and morale was low as a result of them.

A staff report to city council indicated that, as a result of the changes, there has been a negative impact on crime prevention programs and a less visible uniformed police presence in the city.

The reduction has not resulted in an appreciable difference in Richmond’s crime rate, which, to August, is 3.9 per cent higher than it was in 2015. Common thefts and residential break-ins are both down 20 per cent, while thefts from motor vehicles and shoplifting are up 17 and 39 per cent, respectively.

ext spring, when you get a toonie in your change at the checkout, take a closer look at it — there’s a serious Richmond connection to that little piece of metal.

For the coin, gloriously decorated by the Northern Lights dancing in the sky above two awestruck paddlers on a lake, was the creation of Richmond-born and raised Dr. Timothy Hsia as part of a nationwide, Royal Canadian Mint competition to mark the country’s 150th birthday.

Last year, out of thousands of entries, Hsia’s design, called Dance of the Spirits, was chosen first as a finalist in the “Our Wonders” category by a panel of esteemed Canadians — including Rick Hansen — and then as the winner via a public, online vote.

But it was only a week or so ago that Hsia, 31, took a call around 5 p.m. to be told by the Mint that he had actually won.

“We appreciated the gesture and, over time, realized that Grandpa had effectively made us coin collectors ourselves.

We were inspired by the beautiful designs of Grandpa’s coins and we dedicate our coin designs to him.”

Timothy also acknowledged his Richmond resident parents for instilling his love of the arts at an early age, including taking himself and his brother to plays at the Gateway Theatre.

Before the unveiling on Wednesday, Mayor Malcolm Brodie congratulated Timothy and said the coin was “going to be a hot commodity in Richmond and across Canada.”

Susan Dujmovic, the Royal Canadian Mint Board’s vicechair, told how, during her time with the Mint, a “couple of coins have stuck out for me; one during the Olympics…and this one today; this is a proud moment for Dr. Hsia.”

Talking about the inspiration behind his actual design, Timothy cited the Northern Lights as being a “true Canadian wonder…that all Canadians...appreciate and call their own.

“To me, this radiant light display embodies Canada’s unity and beauty. I titled my design Dance of the Spirits after how the Cree people attribute the northern lights to the special moment when the spirits manifest themselves, dancing, to the human eyes and minds below.”

Asked what he might think when, next spring, he gets handed at the checkout for the first time his toonie, Timothy wasn’t too sure.

“I might say, ‘that’s my coin.’ I hope people will at least pause and take a look at it. If they don’t, I may have to point out it’s my coin.”

ne of the perks of writing this column is a regular stream of invitations to wine tastings.

In September I attended a blind tasting of a dozen Rhone wines from France under the expert guidance of sommelier Michelle Bouffard.

Also at the tasting was Laura Vaissermann, spokesperson for Rhone Valley Wine, the secondlargest vineyard in France.

“There is good awareness of the quality of this appellation. The blending from the southern Rhone are very versatile, Vaissermann stated. “They go well with lots of foods, it’s easy to enjoy. We talk about affordable blends, it’s not only a price question, but it’s also a taste question. It’s easy to appreciate and enjoy these wines.

produced from five different varieties: Roussanne, Vermentino, Grenache, a touch of Marsanne and Clairette.

Pour a glass and with its gleaming golden yellow colour, it’s love at first sight!

Like many Rhone whites, it has a gorgeous floral bouquet. The flavour is complex with delicious rich notes of honeysuckle, quince, citrus and pear, plus minerality. Silky and smooth. Enjoy with clam chowder, bouillabaisse, or pasta with prawns and chorizo. Available at Liberty Wine Merchants throughout Vancouver.

Most Rhone wines, however, are red. In the north, the only red grape permitted in the top regions or crus is Syrah aka Shiraz. The 2014 organic Chapoutier Les Meysonniers Crozes Hermitage ($26.49) is an elegant Syrah made from 25 year old vines with a fruity and floral bouquet. The flavour has the black pepper spice characteristic of Rhone Syrahs.

There is good acid plus a savouriness to the rich prune fruit. It has soft tannins and finishes on a crescendo.

From the southern Rhone comes the 2015 La Domelière Rasteau ($21.99).

Made from 40-year-old vines, it’s

is a blend of three varietals. The Grenache is the base of the wine and adds freshness and red fruits such as strawberry and cherry.

The Syrah adds darker colour, and black cherry and blackberry character, while the Mourvèdre adds more tannin for aging and hints of gaminess and licorice.

Our final Rhone red is the Chateau Pesquié 2014 Terrasses ($18.99) from the Ventoux region, in the foothills of the Alps.

It has been one of my favourites for more than a decade and in 2015 was one of Wine Spectators Top 100 wines.

Chateau Pesquié is a voluptuous blend of Syrah and Grenache with spicy overtones to the red fruit: cinnamon and cloves.

The flavour is rich with cherry and plum fruit and a hint of the garrigue, wild herbs such as lavender and thyme.

All of today’s reds are available at government stores.

Enjoy with chicken tagine, lamb osso buco, ratatouille, or manchego cheese.

Collecting fun facts doesn't amount to learning SABINEEICHE Book Club

I

confess that I groan whenever I see inserts in a newspaper or on the Internet with the heading “Fun Fact.”

What do fun facts do, other than fill spaces on a page? Are they supposed to be the seeds of knowledge? Well, they won’t germinate on their own.

Something similar to fun facts was a craze about 50 years ago — the game trivia — which led to the creation of Trivial Pursuit in 1982.

However, the origin of the word trivia goes back a long way. The British-American writer Logan Pearsall Smith (1865-1946) introduced it into our vocabulary in 1902 with the publication of his book, Trivia – a

collection of short essays about commonplace matters.

Smith derived the title from the English word trivial, which in turn comes from the Latin adjective “trivialis,” pertaining to a crossroads (the Latin for a crossroads is “trivium,” literally three roads).

Pause a minute to imagine yourself in ancient Rome, 2,000 years ago. You’re shuffling down a road and arrive at a fork.

An acquaintance comes shuffling towards you. You stop, exchange a greeting, perhaps complain about the weather, and then you shuffle on, going your separate ways.

Your brief, inconsequential remarks at the “trivium” were trivial. No one stops at a crossroads to deliver a long speech.

Nonetheless, Smith’s trivialities are a far cry from fun facts. We’re given a flash of insight in Book II of Trivia, in the essay “The Burden,” where Smith writes: “I know too

much; I have stuffed too many of the facts of History and Science into my intellectuals.

My eyes have grown dim over books; believing in geological periods, cave dwellers, Chinese dynasties, and the fixed stars has prematurely aged me.”

Smith wore his learning lightly, but there’s never any doubt that he was a genuinely learned man. Has learning — the dedicated pursuit of knowledge — become a quaint relic of those former times?

Nowadays, we accumulate bits of information at an alarming rate, only to end up dumping them in the great recycle bin of our mind because we don’t know what to do with them. Another aspect of our throwaway society?

Knowledge is a vast intellectual network.

A lot of disparate facts are of little use to us until we discover how they relate to other facts — that is, until we comprehend them,

which means a committed effort on our part.

At the root of the English verb comprehend is the Latin “comprehendere.” It means to seize, lay hold of, but also to perceive with the senses, and to seize is also one of the obsolete meanings of the English verb. In modern German, to comprehend or understand is “begreifen” — “greifen” (seize) derives from the same Proto-Germanic source as the English verb gripe. Originally, gripe meant to seize, grasp, though unlike “begreifen” it never referred to the intellect.

Yet, in an ironic and roundabout way, gripe can be linked to the intellect, to learning, because in the 1930s, gripe acquired the figurative sense to complain — and don’t students customarily gripe when asked to buckle down and do their homework?

Waging war against a destructive beetle Richmond renews sister LINDAPASACRETA Gardening city status

B

ack in March of this year, I wrote a column about the dastardly European chafer beetle and the terrible damage it was doing to our lawns at that time of year.

Fast forward to October of this year and the City of Richmond is plagued with the grubs of the chafer beetle emerging out of our lawns way earlier than expected.

Crows, skunks, raccoons and other beasts are tearing apart our lawns to get at these tasty treats. The beetles typically lay 20 to 30 eggs in July in lawns that are unhealthy.

All that can be done right now, for those infected with the grubs, is to rake up the mess and lay down plastic netting secured with some heavy stones or brick.

For many homeowners, the cycle continues to repeat itself in their lawns every year, even after they have replaced sections or the whole lawn. The most important thing you can do to stop the chafer beetle from choosing your lawn is to continue to regularly maintain it.

Spread compost or new topsoil on your lawn in the spring and re-seed. Let your grass grow longer, apply slow-release organic fertilizer and leave your glass clippings on your lawn rather than raking them up. Apply another light dressing of topsoil or compost in the fall. Water regularly to encourage deep roots which chafer beetles do not like.

ability Departments of the City of Richmond is doing something about the chafer beetle problem. They have created a chafer beetle demonstration lawn at Garden City Park that will showcase alternative grasses/ground covers that are known to be chafer-resistant.

The city developed three plots that include seeds of a pollinator blend, microclover/tall fescue blend and Fleur de Lawn, provided

by West Coast Seeds.

The demonstration lawn will give residents the opportunity to look at the chafer resistant ground cover options to assist them before purchasing seeds or turf.

The three plots at Garden City Park include: • Pollinator Blend: Includes a mix of low

growing evergreens and fragrant herbs.

This mix will be able to handle a variety of soil and sun conditions and withstand foot traffic.

• Microclover/tall fescue blend: This evergreen blend resembles traditional lawns and should be mowed once per month to keep the microclover from flowering. It can handle different types of soil, tolerates shade and is drought resistant.

• Fleur de Lawn: My favourite! The seed was developed in Oregon as a flowering lawn alternative.

Once established, it is very drought tolerant and stays green with little upkeep. This lawn would require mowing once per month.

The Richmond Garden Club applauds the city for its proactive approach in encouraging our community to move away from traditional lawns and to become more proactive themselves in managing European chafer beetle infestations.

Some of the worst hit areas are located on boulevards surrounding townhouse and condo developments.

We would love to encourage the city to work with developers and lawn care companies to plant alternative grasses and groundcovers rather than the “chafer friendly” traditional lawns, in new developments and in existing residential properties.

So, say good-bye to having to cut the lawn every week and fight off the skunks, crows and raccoons and make the change to alternative ground covers!

he mayor, city council vice-chairman and councillors from Wakayama, Japan visited Richmond from Oct. 30-31.

During the visit, the new Wakayama mayor, Masahiro Obana, and new city council vice-chairman, Masato Toda, along with Richmond mayor Malcolm Brodie and council members from both cities discussed their ongoing mutual commitment to promote educational, cultural, artistic, tourism and economic exchanges between the two sister cities.

A memorandum of understanding was signed to renew the two cities’ longstanding sister city relationship and to support commitments to work collaboratively to promote international exchange.

Together with the mayor and members of Richmond’s council, members of the Wakayama delegation attended an official opening of Town Square Park in Steveston, where they participated in a cherry tree planting ceremony.

At the park, the Wakayama delegation saw the installation of the suikinkutsu they previously gifted to Richmond. This Japanese water feature is one of Town Square Park’s most striking features.

The City of Wakayama has been the City of Richmond’s sister city since 1973.

Fueled by witnessing first-hand the plight of the homeless community, a small, but dedicated and socially conscious, group of Richmond grads is hoping to heat up awareness within people’s hearts and minds.

The eight-strong crew — the majority of whom are Steveston-London alumni — are the driving force behind Ignite the Warmth, a now three-year-old endeavour, armed with a mission to combat ignorance of the homeless on three fronts: facilitate, educate and communicate.

At the team’s core is its desire to help other groups help the homeless; in particular to guide them through the channels required to set up events, such as blanket drives, a popular tool used in the colder months to bring comfort to the people living rough.

It’s a tactic that has proved very successful over the years since Ignite the Warmth co-founder Pricilia Kong first had her eyes opened to the heartbreak on the streets while running the group’s own blanket drive at Steveston-London.

“We’ve helped many school groups, some local hockey teams and church groups set up their own drives,” said Kong, who’s now in her third year at UBC, majoring in integrated sciences, combining the disciplines of neuro-

science and foundations of human health.

“The majority of the groups are from Richmond, but this year, we’re hoping to branch it out to the UBC community.

“We’ve created a package where we take these groups through the steps. We did this three years ago while at Steveston-London and we simply wanted to help others.

“Every year, we ask the local community around the end of November...to participate through either running their own blanket drives, within their various groups, or donate any blankets, clothes, sheets, socks, etc., that they have to the cause.

“We are hoping to get as many high schools, churches, community groups, elementary schools, thrift stores, and university clubs involved as possible to make this the biggest and best one yet.”

The main thing for Kong, however, is to generate a more acute awareness of the homeless community, “to evoke a change of mentality and to urge people to look beyond the surface.

“Each of these (homeless) people have a story and we are asking people not to judge; it could happen to any one of us, given the right set of circumstances.”

he future appears bright for the coming generation of local philanthropists using their growing business savvy and creative powers to help Richmond’s charities.

That was the observation from Rob Howard, chair of the Richmond Christmas Fund, as he, and a collection of the charity’s board members, recently heard enthusiastic pitches from economics 12 students at Cambie secondary who have been tasked with generating ideas to increase awareness and raise funds for the organization which assists thousands of local families during the holiday season.

“This is remarkable to see a group of young people so committed and so professional,” said Howard while addressing the students. “I think our future is in very good hands, especially at Christmas, which is a very special time of the year.

“Part of what the Christmas Funds does is making sure we reach out to people in need and I can tell from the presentations that you have caught that spirit,” he added. “I hope we can do every one of these projects because they are all fantastic.”

Among the ideas presented were hosting a movie night for elementary school students and their siblings, a charity basketball game and carnival-style games at Aberdeen Centre.

The exercise is part of the ongoing involvement of two former Richmond high school grads, Jacky Tang and Gurdy Jagde, who co-founded Reach Richmond, a program which is designed to bring the

Both were part of the Youth Now program that Richmond Cares Richmond Gives (RCRG) runs, which connects youth with local charities, and now they serve as board members.

“Our goal is to engage youth in being proactive leaders in our community with a

For their part, the students said the opportunity to take part in Reach has allowed them to gain knowledge and experience on a number of levels.

“After doing a lot of research, we found that a lot of families hold Christmas so special,” said Asha Sahota, a spokesperson for one of the groups. “And we’ve learned how rewarding it is to give back to the community, even though it represents a lot of work on our end. It’s all worth it at the end, because you realize you’ve been able to help so many families just through giving a little part of our lives.”

Beware business fraud KIMINGLIS Finance

A

ccording to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), fraud is a major threat to the Canadian small business community, hitting small businesses an average of $6,200 in financial costs in the past year.

One third of small businesses have experienced one or more fraud attempts in the last year, and one in five have fallen victim.

Only eight per cent of defrauded businesses recovered their full financial costs.

Fortunately, there are a few common denominators that small business owners can watch out for.

Some fraudsters come through your front door and their contact is your employee — who will determine whether you get to keep or lose your money. Are you certain your staff have sufficient training to recognize common scams like credit card fraud, counterfeit money, or bad cheques and money orders?

People using fraudulent credit cards have very specific buying patterns (only expensive items, no concern about price or warranty, etc) that should raise red flags, and there are simple things your employees can do, such as checking signatures or examining credit card security features.

However, if your staff is unaware of the techniques, it’s likely that someone will successfully steal your merchandise.

If fraudsters have determined they’re going to target your business for a bad cheque or money order scam, they arrive well prepared. They will have scouted your business and printed false ID and authentic looking cheques with fake ‘verification’ numbers.

Again, there are specific signs and preventive procedures — but they don’t do any good if your staff doesn’t know about them.

Some scammers don’t come through your door because their chosen weapon is the telephone, either by talking to one of your employees or through ‘fax back’ scams.

According to CFIB, the most common attempted frauds are email scams and phishing, followed by directory fraud, malicious software and phone scams.

Some prevention can be as simple as hard-and-fast rules about never divulging or clarifying any information about your business, or never agreeing to a telephone business proposal.

If you’re in a business that handles a lot of cash, like a restaurant, you can expect additional scams aimed at you and your servers. Passing counterfeit money is the favourite.

The Bank of Canada has a series of excellent, free training booklets and videos covering a range of common frauds.

“Usually playgrounds for children have very bright colours, rounded soft corners on equipment, and a defined way in, around, and out,” says Cindy. “Our Playhouse is very different.

It’s a very simple environment, and very calming. The kids can enter wherever they like. There’s no one way to interact with the play structures, so every time they come in, they discover different ways of interacting.”

Cindy and her Coffee Mom friends took inspiration from the European design of play centres.

“Based on that design concept,” Cindy explains, “we decided that we needed to custom build something along the lines of what is good for children and their learning, rather than what the parents think is attractive. Too many bright colours or commercial toys can be very distracting for children. We wanted something a little more open-ended that allowed the kids to explore themselves.”

When the Playhouse facilitators design their programs, they keep this exploration philosophy in mind.

“We don’t want our facilitators to simply transmit knowledge to the children,” Cindy says. “We ask them to generate enquiries and questions from the children. They use songs, movement, and our selective educational toys to develop the child’s social and emotional skills. The syllabus is not fixed; our facilitators create their programs together with the children.”

Throughout the day, the Appleseed Playhouse offers different programs on its opened edu-playground rather than putting children in a closed classroom setting, all aimed at stimulating the child’s development in the areas of creative, music, movement, and social and emotional development.

“When you come here, you don’t just have a music and dance class,” Cindy says. “In our “Freeflow Fundom” program, for example, children are encouraged to invent their own moves, collaborate and share inspirations with others and create art collages out of dance, sound and body imagery. Our facilitators may prepare a ‘story’, and with the children they will learn how to bring the story to life through their bodies, voices, and possibly simple musical instruments and pieces of fabric.

By participating in our play activities, children are not only learning the core skills, but they think outside the box, interact and develop new inspirations.

fter a few anxious days back in September, the McMath Wildcats’ field hockey supremacy in Vancouver and District play is alive and well.

The Wildcats captured their fifth consecutive Carey Cup as zone champions with a win over Kitsilano last week at Minoru Park to also lock up another berth in the upcoming provincial AAA tournament in Surrey.

Girls high school field hockey has a rich tradition here and the talent pool was deep enough about a decade ago for Richmond to have its own league. McRoberts was a powerhouse for a number of years — winning a pair of provincial championships — while many players have gone on to play at the CIS and NCAA levels. The Carey Cup is named after Lance and Nancy Carey for all the work they did in developing and supporting the sport, in Richmond and beyond, for many years.

Richmond Field Hockey Club is still producing standout players, evident on this summer’s provincial teams, however, the talent pool has thinned out where McMath is the lone city school to keep its program going.

Even that wasn’t a certainty back at the start of the school year. With a core that includes junior national team prospect Dakota Chan, along with Team B.C. members Geor-

gia Booker and Aish Sander, the Wildcats still needed to find more players.

“This year has been pretty tough actually,” said McMath co-coach Kira Carre who shares the duties with longtime parent volunteer TJ Sander. “For tryouts we only had 11 or 12 girls and had to beg and plead with a few people to come out. We have some who are in just Grade 8 or their first-year of club.

“I think field hockey in Richmond is still big and strong, it’s just become a little bit tougher than it has in the past with the talent spread out.”

It’s also taking the efforts of Carre and Sander to keep the program going. Carre is actually teaching at MacNeill this year but remains loyal to a team she first started volunteering for four years ago.

After a slow start, the Wildcats are playing their best hockey of the season and will be looking for another top eight finish at provincials. They went 6-1-1 in regular season play and got past Eric Hamber and then Kitsilano to earn district honours.

The 16-team provincial championships takes place next week at Tamanawis Park.

“With the few numbers at the beginning of the season we didn’t know what to expect but, each game, the girls have got better and better,” Carre added. “We’re really excited about the provincials. We don’t play many games (outside of league) throughout the year so it’s nice to come in as an underdog and surprise a few teams.”

Strikers will be the teams to beat at city volleyball championships

efending champion McRoberts Strikers will be the overwhelming favourites when the Richmond Senior Volleyball Championships get underway next week.

McRoberts senior boys team has been a fixture in the provincial AA

rankings all season and are a solid bet to be heading to the provincial championships at the Langley Events Centre.

The Strikers rolled to a 7-0 record in league play and dropped just six sets in the process. They

will host the city boys playoffs, starting Monday. The championship match is slated for 8 p.m.

Thursday.

Also competing are: Richmond High (5-2), Cambie (4-3), McMath (4-3), Richmond Christian (4-3),

Steveston-London (3-4), Burnett (1-7) and MacNeill (0-7).

Meanwhile, it has been another perfect run (10-0) for the McRoberts senior girls team, losing just four sets throughout the regular season.

What makes the run impressive is having just five returning players — Mikaela Cadorette, Sophia Chang, Amanda Wei and Grade 11s Madeline Mathews and Chloe Mathews.
