s a kid, I loved Halloween. It was the novelty of all that free candy, but also the thrill of being out at night, along with hordes of other little terrors. It was the one time of year that the night belonged to us.

One of my clearest memories was of walking with my friends and seeing, off in the distance, a tall, creepy witch, complete with pointy hat and crooked nose, standing over a huge caldron, stirring it with a wooden ladle the size of a canoe paddle.

As we approached, we could see billows of steam rising up from the green liquid. She cackled wildly as she handed us a Styrofoam cup of the toxic-looking concoction.

I was genuinely terrified, but entranced. I took a tentative sip. What?! Sweet, cold, lime Kool Aid. Man, I love Halloween.

OK, dry ice was creating the thick fog. That tall, skinny witch? My classmate’s teenage sister, and that ladle was, in fact, a canoe paddle. But, at the time, the thrill of danger and crossing into the unknown sparked something unforgettable. As time’s gone by, and mysteries are explained, I can’t say I’ve had so many of those moments.

When I had kids of my own, however, my love of Halloween was rekindled. What I loved, in part, was all the excitement and anticipation, without the angst that often goes with planning birthday parties or shopping for Christmas. And the thrill of being outdoors at night when human (and ghostly) traffic dominates the roads, has never waned.

What was new to me was fireworks. I grew up in Alberta and lived for years in Ontario, where fireworks are pretty well reserved for Canada Day and maybe New Year’s Eve. One of the first years I was here, Halloween fell on a cloudless Saturday night — and a firework bans had yet to be enacted. Looking over our back deck, we could see our neighbours with their friends, three or four couples, all with a beer in hand. The men were in the yard trying to set off their explosives, the women stood watching warily on the balcony, offering commentary — you can imagine how that went over.

It was a hilarious Gong Show; while some of their pyrotechnics launched skyward, others forced you to duck. I think that was the year Coun. Derek Dang’s hedge caught on fire thanks to an errant explosive. Soon after, they were banned.

The thought of handing out unpackaged Kool Aid is inconceivable these days. And there’s nothing smart about people who don’t know what they’re doing lighting explosives.

(I’m truly grateful my son is pushing 20 and still has all his digits.) Still, there’s something to be said for the occasional walk on the wild side. Halloween is a night during which the “veil between the living and the dead grows most thin.” The trick is peeking through that veil without ending up on the wrong side.

LETTERSto the Editor DNR: Have that tough talk Dear Editor, Re: “Resuscitation order ‘flawed’,” News, Oct. 19.

As a paramedic in the Lower Mainland, I have witnessed first hand the anguish that a loved one’s death can cause family members and my sympathy goes out to the Wang family.

While I am not familiar with the specifics of Mr. Wang’s case, I can say that I have participated in many similar resuscitations outside a hospital setting.

More than 85 per cent of cardiac arrests in Canada occur outside of the hospital therefore it is crucially important for everyone to understand and communicate their wishes regarding advanced directives and do not resuscitate orders to their friends and family.

While guidelines are in place regarding when a resuscitation is warranted, often I have only seconds to decide if those guidelines are met and frequently my decision is based on information from available loved ones.

I urge everyone young and old, healthy and with chronic diseases to have a discussion with their family and primary care provider regarding these important decisions.

What makes your life meaningful? What would you like your death to look like? What are the odds of your survival?

While I can’t answer the more personal questions for you, I can inform you of the realities of an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: z Nationally, only 4.3 to nine per cent of people will survive. B.C. is slightly better at

14 per cent, which is still less than three people in every 20 victims. z The greatest chance for survival occurs when a bystander witnesses the cardiac arrest and CPR is started immediately (especially if a defibrillator is present). z It is unclear if advancing age has any bearing on the survivability of an out-of hospital cardiac arrest. z The more chronic conditions a patient has (high blood pressure, diabetes, previous heart attack, etc.), the less likely they are to survive. z Resuscitation commonly involves CPR, which includes chest compressions (may result in broken ribs) and artificial respirations with a mask. A tube may also be placed down your throat to facilitate your breathing, electricity may be used to try and reset your heart rhythm and intravenous access may be obtained to give you medications.

While it may be uncomfortable to read and talk about these things, it can be even worse for your family to have to witness these procedures, not knowing if they are making the right decisions. Please allow your family and myself to honour your wishes and provide you with the care you actually choose. I urge you to visit online at Gov.bc.ca/AdvanceCare, share your decisions with your family and place any important paperwork such as do not resuscitate orders on your fridge where I, and other first responders, can find it.

Parents are spoiled brats Dear Editor, Re: “We’ll be torn apart,” Letter, Sept. 21.

I am intrigued by the editorial letters printed in the Richmond News recently regarding the closure of some schools.

Parents are complaining of extended distances their children will have to walk to school, potentially crossing a train track or navigate a busy intersection.

To quote a particular letter that encouraged me to respond by a Dixon Elementary parent stating that, “I need the convenience of (my child) being able to walk to school by herself. She will be in Grade 6 next year and there is no way she could walk to Diefenbaker. It is more than 1.6 kms away and involves more than 20 minutes of walking, crossing both busy No. 1 Road and Williams.”

This attitude is absolute self-centered nonsense.

I am a 1995 Steveston High grad who lived in the Blundell and No. 1 Road area during my school years.

As per Google maps my walk to Hugh Boyd was 1.7 kms (approx. 22 mins) my walk (or bike ride) to Steveston High was 3.1 kms (approx. 37 mins.).

I did these journeys every day and, amazingly, I survived. A car ride to school with mom was a rare treat!

I support arguments regarding the quality of education and structural safety of school facilities, however the complaint that a child is suffering because of a longer walk to school is ignorant. While some parents may be “inconvenienced” by commute routes and time, I am “inconvenienced” by my tax dollars being spent on schools that are not viable.

Teach your children to watch out for trains and always check both ways before crossing the street; Good advice for life.

Proposed Development Cost Charges Update Notice of Public Consultation

The City of Richmond is updating its Development Cost Charges (DCC) Bylaw to reflect infrastructure requirements of new development. Richmond’s existing DCC Bylaw was last updated in 2009.

The proposed DCC Program (2016-2041) and proposed DCC rates were endorsed by Council on September 26, 2016 as a basis for further public consultation in establishing the updated DCC Rates Bylaw. Dear Editor, Re: “20 Facts about the OVAL – An Alternate Point of View,” advertisement, Oct. 26.

Not to be overly critical of the Oval, but I believe the taxpayers point of view needs to be expressed.

On the matter of community use, roughly 4,800 persons from Richmond have Oval memberships. As there are 213,891 persons in Richmond, then the membership only encompasses about two per cent of the 2016 population of Richmond. This smacks of a taxpayer-funded elitist membership.

The advertisement uses cost-per-squarefoot comparisons to other municipal buildings to demonstrate the Oval’s low operating costs. But the Oval only came in second

when compared to Minoru Arenas. Unfortunately, the comparisons to the seniors centre and libraries may not be relevant as those buildings have different functions. Also, I would assume the library has more members than the Oval.

Still, city council has curtailed some of the library’s expenditures. Later in the ad, it states, “It simply makes good sense to take advantage of Olympic-related opportunities when they offer such a strong return on investment.”

As a taxpayer, I’m still waiting for my Oval dividend cheque or Oval-related tax reduction.

Trying to square the Oval's costs

Dear Editor, With reference to the “Oval Executives all-in on ROX” (News, Oct. 21) reporting, well done and please keep it coming. I note, the executives did not speak for themselves.

The Oval does not pay rent or financing costs to Richmond. The Oval does not pay property tax on property assessed at $232 million (BC Assessment). This is equivalent to forgiving 116 Richmond homes assessed at $2 million each from property tax obligations.

Oval membership, admissions and program fees totalled $7.6 million in 2015. In 2015 salaries were $7.9 million. Total expenses were $13.7 million. I smell a loss.

Oval revenues were reported to include the city’s $3.8 million contribution and $2.5 million from the 2010 Games Operating Trust (funded by federal deficit spending — same

taxpayer).

May I suggest the 50 per cent ownership of VROX Sport Simulation Ltd. by the Oval with five directors (four are Oval executives) be required to report all personal income from VROX. Of the $798,001 VROX expenses reported for 2015, how much went to the four Oval executives serving as directors. (Aran) Kay said no further details are available, as it is a private company. Huh? It’s 50 per cent owned by the Oval, which is a subsidiary of Richmond, and it’s not accountable?

Do Richmond taxpayers smell conflict of interest? Do Richmond residents expect Mayor Brodie and council to provide transparency and responsible fiduciary duty in this matter?

I sincerely hope so.

“It’s early days in the flu season and it may change, but the early indications are is that it’s the strain that’s serious for seniors, so we would urge those people especially to get immunized.

“We’ve already seen outbreaks in seniors facilities; we’re seeing early activity in the long term care facilities.”

Those early indicators of a tough season ahead, added Dawar, are more the “flavour of the reports so far, rather

than the number.”

In this year’s vaccine there are three strains of the flu, said Dawar, including AH1N1, influenza B (Brisbane) and H3N2 (Hong Kong).

“This vaccine has two new components compared to last year, the B strain and the H3N2 has changed, so they should be a good match for what is out there this year,” she said.

big flu season is being forecast this winter and Richmond’s chief medical health officer is urging everyone, especially seniors, to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Dr. Meena Dawar told a packed media conference at the Richmond Public Health Office on Wednesday that early indications are the Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) region could be a “heavy season” for flu outbreaks.

Before taking the flu shot herself for the cameras, Dawar said health professionals in the VCH region are expecting the most trouble this season from the H3N2 (Hong Kong) virus, which will apparently affect seniors, in particular.

But with almost 60,000 doses of the vaccine being distributed throughout Richmond this season, Dawar hopes everyone who wants to be vaccinated will receive one.

“This is our largest campaign (of the year) as influenza can be deadly,” said Dawar, adding that the

he Richmond Animal Protection Society (RAPS) is reminding pet owners not to take their animals out trick-or-treating or to the community fireworks events.

Julie Desgroseillers, shelter manager for RAPS, told the News there was a spike last year in the number of strays coming into the care of the animal charity around Halloween time.

Nine scared animals, both cats and dogs, were handed into RAPS by members of the public or its own animal welfare officer last Halloween.

“It doesn’t sound like a lot, but when you consider we don’t really get more than two or three on any other given day, it is quite a number,” said Desgroseillers.

“Thankfully, they were all reclaimed by the end of the week and it was good that they had a safe place to come to.”

“We would, obviously, encourage people not to take their dogs out to events on Halloween,” she added.

To deal with the expected influx, RAPS is this year extending its animal control hours to 9 p.m. from the usual 6 p.m.

Other tips from RAPS include: n Keep animals indoors: While the front door may be opening constantly as trick-ortreaters demand loot, be sure that all pets are carefully and safely secured in a part of the house where they cannot escape; n Make sure your pet has ID: Get your dog tagged or chipped for identification; n It’s not just one night: Halloween may be Oct. 31, but firecrackers and other explosive noises entertain young (and sometimes older) folks for days before and after. Be prepared to take precautions after Oct. 31; n Watch what your pets eat; n Costumes aren’t always fun: Costumes can be traumatizing for some animals, restricting their movement and choking them.

Are we ready for a zombie apocalypse?

I

n a zombie apocalypse I have mixed thoughts about being in Richmond. For one, as far as the Lower Mainland is concerned, I think the disease would likely hit this city first, what with it being so close to the airport. I’m also wary about leadership and communication in the aftermath of it all, as well as the lack of household guns in the city. On the other hand, in the aftermath, I think Richmond has some real opportunity to become a stronghold for the living, what with it being an island.

When the zombies come, us mild-mannered, often timid Richmondites will need to be prepared to hunker down and start smashing skulls; but it’s after that initial wave of terror that things will get complicated, according to Sam Migliore, professor of anthropology at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

“In the case of Richmond, if there was a zombie apocalypse, people have to be ready to protect themselves, but also need to expect what people will change into to deal with the situation. And will we like these changes?” asked Migliore.

In other words, will the living be their own worst enemies, much like in the TV show The Walking Dead ?

“The most dangerous people in the show are not zombies, but other living human beings. And so, what happens when there is a crisis? What happens when we compete for food and what happens to our humanity?” asked Migliore, who teaches social and cultural anthropology.

“The Walking Dead tells us more about human beings than zombies,” he said.

The fact that Brodie won’t know to wrap a butcher knife around his trombone — he plays trombone in his spare time — indicates to me that he may be the last person you want to be seen with during the zombie apocalypse (but I’m still confident in his non-zombie disaster response skills).

Now, the city contends people should be ready during a biological emergency. One should have a three-day supply of food and water, as well as a host of medical supplies and equipment.

But once immediate supplies have run dry, and we’ve raided the corner grocers, then what?

“Of communities that have an ethic of sharing, you’d expect that ethic to continue,” said Migliore. “I guess the thing we’d have to focus on is, how does a major catastrophe strain relationships where they can’t even depend on family members the next day? You don’t know what will happen. It strains people in an unprecedented way.”

likely to band together? I hope so. On the whole, I have some concerns about communicating in a common language. But this has always been a strong group of people, and hopefully we can rally together to force all remaining zombies off of Lulu Island.

“You’d have to control access to the areas, whether it’s controlling bridges, waterways and airways,” said Migliore.

“Whatever the checkpoints are, they’d have to withstand many people trying to get across,” he added.

At this point, we can barricade the bridges and man them

with members of the 12 Service Battalion and Richmond Rod and Gun Club.

Meanwhile, we’ll set up watch stations along the river to pick up any swimmers, so we can quarantine them.

racey Stecher was at a loss for words Tuesday night, but not at a loss for her son’s replica No. 51 jerseys, which she scooped from the retail racks at Rogers Arena, along with friends and family.

“We cleared them out!” Tracey exclaimed to her son, Troy Stecher, just after he exited the Vancouver Canucks dressing room following the team’s 3-0 loss to the Ottawa Senators.

“You shouldn’t have done that, I’m changing my number,” replied the 22-year-old, who became the first born-and-raised Richmondite to suit up for the hometown National Hockey League team.

“Well then, they’ll be collector’s items,” mom quipped back.

“I can just buy more,” she added.

With a slight roll of his eyes, Troy gathered around his family for hugs and high-praise for his NHL debut, in which he deservedly was named the game’s third star, after nearly logging the most ice time on the team.

But despite his impressive start to a budding professional hockey career, Troy didn’t appear happy — after all, he had just lost.

The smooth-skating, powerplay specialist hopes to bring that winning ethos to the Canucks.

“Obviously, the goal is to win the Stanley Cup. I’m taking it one day at a time. If I’m here, I’m here, if not, I’m back in Utica trying to win the Calder Cup. Winning becomes addictive; winning just feels special; I always want to win,” said Troy, who plans to soon finish his communications degree online, either in Vancouver or Utica, New York with the Canucks’ affiliate farm team, the Comets.

While known for being able to remember each shift with vivid detail, this was not the case for his first in the NHL. “I blacked out my first shift. That was the moment I realized I made it to this level. After that, the nerves were set aside, and the adrenaline kicked in, it was just another game,” said Troy.

A Dixon (elementary school) Dragon, who started playing hockey with the Richmond Minor Hockey Association (RMHA) at the age of six, Troy told the Richmond News that, aside from hockey, his life was fairly routine growing up with an

older sister and brother, living in the Blundell neighbourhood while playing lacrosse in the summers.

“He just kept getting better all the time,” said Peter, who once veered his son away from wanting to be a goalie.

“He was a rock star at six,” interjected family friend Paul Eviston.

Troy said it was while playing bantam (Grades 8 and 9) that he knew he was good at hockey, since he started competing against other prodigies who were making news headlines — such as now Edmonton Oilers star Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

He said he loved playing at the Richmond Olympic Oval every Tuesday night.

“It was big ice and I’m a small guy, so there was more room to skate there,” he said. Size had been a factor for the once diminutive player, who is now 5’10” tall and 190 lbs.

But Troy had a head on him, explained Cam Gardner, his former RMHA assistant coach in bantam.

“He was almost impossible to hit on the forecheck. And to see a small guy almost never get hit and make such great decisions with the puck and play a cerebral, intelligent game at such a young age was incredible to watch. You knew right away that he was a special talent,” said Gardner.

“More than anything, the thing that stood out about Troy was how much he liked hockey and how much he enjoyed coming to the rink. His attitude was infectious,” he added.

Come Grade 8, Troy left Richmond to attend South Delta secondary school’s hockey academy to complement his play at RMHA. By Grade 11, he was off to Penticton to play in the Junior A BC Hockey League, where he would win the Fred Page Cup in 2012 and be named the league’s best defenseman in 2013.

From page 18 Peter said, due to his typical teenage frame, Troy benefited from a gradual lead up to the NCAA, despite being drafted by the Western Hockey League’s Portland Winterhawks.

“The WHL would have killed him. The WHL is a big man’s game. (Penticton) gave him time to mature, grow into his body and learn how to workout properly,” said Peter.

As dad keenly watched Troy on the ice, mom had other thoughts when her “baby” left for Penticton, to play for the Vees.

“I felt horrific to have him leave home so young; but so proud of him,” she said.

“When he went to Penticton his coach, I think, was kind of pissed off at me because I asked if there was French immersion. He was like, ‘What? French Immersion?’ He didn’t care. I thought it was important.

“That was something I really wanted.”

And so Troy finished the French immersion program he had started at Dixon and by age 19 was off to college.

Gardner said Troy’s bantam teams were special and even competed in the provincial finals.

He explained why it’s nearly unheard of for a kid to play minor hockey in Richmond all the way to Grade 9 and then make it to the NHL. In the Lower Mainland, “it’s rare for any (minor hockey association) to compete with the winter clubs. They can take players. So, you have those top-level defections,” said Gardner.

The only other Richmond-born player to play for the Canucks was Brandon McMillan, in 2014. However, McMillan grew up in Delta.

How Your Donations Transform Care at Richmond Hospital Two years ago, donors at the Starlight Gala were asked to help fund equipment for a new Pediatric Unit at Richmond Hospital. This year, we shared the emotional story of how those very donations helped to save the life of one-month old baby Casey. Admitted for respiratory illness and rapidly declining, baby Casey suddenly went into arrest, his breathing stopped and his pulse was lost. The new “experience” for customers starts in the lobby area where, previously, a bank of four or five cash registers at the order counter have been replaced with just one. Instead, customers are now directed towards four, vertical, touchscreen monitors, that with a swipe and finger point, take you through the entire menu.

A “Guest Experience Leader,” a new McDonald’s employee category, is available to help customers navigate their way and also make them aware of the new Create Your Taste menu that can build a burger in five steps, from the bun, up through a dizzying array of toppings and sauces.

You start by selecting either a black and white sesame seed brioche-style bun or artisian bakery roll. But if you’re looking to cut down on the carbs, there’s even a lettuce wrap option.

Then there’s your choice of cheeses: McDonald’s classic cheese, Monterey Jack jalapeno, natural cheddar, Swiss or even crumbled blue cheese.

Sauce-wise, ketchup is, naturally, first in line. So is good old mustard.

But you can elevate your burger even further with smoky barbecue, Big Mac sauce, chipotle aioli, grainy mustard, siracha sauce, sundried tomato pesto, guacamole, caramelized or crispy onions, sliced jalapenos, long-slice pickles, grilled mushrooms and red onion.

Hickory smoked bacon that comes in strips, as well as broken into pieces – can also be added to the certified Angus beef patty.

All of those options do come with a cost. A Create Your Taste burger starts at $8.49. Currently, a Big Mac burger costs $5.39.

The world is getting smaller and more convenient for air travellers flying out of YVR with the addition last week of Air Canada’s direct flight to Indira Ghandi International Airport in Delhi, India. Changes spark hiring spree From page 32 To help entice customers to give it a try, the restaurant is offering a free drink and fries — which are refillable — until the end of November when they buy a premium burger, which also entitles them to table service.

That is initiated at the end of the ordering process when the customer is directed to pick up and enter the number of a special table tracking device — a puck-sized electronic locater which will allow restaurant staff to home in directly on where you are sitting and deliver your meal on a special wooden platter.

They will also clear away your meal afterwards, and in between visit to ask how your food is tasting and if you would like refills.

Change at McDonald’s has not been restricted to the menu. The roll out of the order kiosks and new burger line, which started at the end of summer in Ontario and slowly spread westward, has affected staffing levels, as well.

“They (McDonald’s corporate office) told us we’d need more people,” Chao said.

“While we reduced the number of people taking orders, we significantly increased the number of people we need behind the scenes in the kitchen and in the lobby helping customers.

“Before, I had maybe two or three registers open. Now, I have kiosks (touchscreens) taking orders and need more people to get to the food to the customers.”

Chao said he has added 10 to 15 more workers to each of his locations. Nationally, the chain is expecting it will have hired 15,000 additional employees to implement the changes.

So, how does that affect the bottom line?

“More consumers are coming in. With these kiosks, they are able to place their orders quickly and get their food,” Chao said. “As a result, we’re serving more people. That’s the difference.”

Once the remaining 20 to 30 B.C. restaurants have been fitted out with the new touchscreen ordering service and the Create Your Taste menu, McDonald’s plans to mount an advertising campaign that it hopes will drive even more traffic through the golden arches.

photo finish at the annual Richmond Elementary Schools Cross-Country Fun Run was exactly what Teagan Ng, Lianna Holz and Lexy Shury had planned for.

The standout runners put their friendship first when the 1.3 kilometre Grade 7 girls race took place on Oct. 12 at Minoru Park.

After years of competing against other and taking turns atop of the podium, the trio decided to cross the finish line simultaneously and share first place honours. And yes, they are that good to determine exactly how the race would conclude.

“We have been going back and forth for first and second place for a long time,” smiled Ng, a student at Dixon Elementary. “(Lianna) has probably come first more than me but I have as well for a couple of times too. So we decided to tie this year. It makes us feel good

rather than coming first, second and third.”

Ng and Holz had plotted out their strategy in the days leading up to the race.

“We think friends are more important,” explained Holz, who attends Thompson Elementary. “It creates good memories and that’s why we wanted to do it.”

What the girls weren’t initially counting on was Shury joining them. The Westward Elementary student battled her way through traffic in the Minoru trails to join her two friends. All play on the same Richmond Strikers U13 Metro soccer team.

“Lots of people were pushing me around, especially when we were in the trees because it’s such a narrow path,” laughed Shury.

“I was just trying to keep up with them because I knew they were going to tie.”

“It was mid-run when we told her about our plan,” added Ng. “We asked Lexy if she wanted to tie and do this dance (as we crossed the finish line) that me

and Lianna had made up.”

The only one else aware of the girls’ intentions was Ng’s mom Carrie who happened to be a volunteer that day. She informed Dixon teacher/coach Lee Hunter what they had planned. “At the time, I only knew about Teagan and Lianna. I just wanted him to

know they were crossing the finish line together.”

Hunter, who was honoured earlier this year by the Richmond Sports Council for over two decades of volunteer work supporting athletics in local elementary schools, marvelled at how these girls had put their friendships

ahead of personal glory.

“All three are very talented athletes and this was the way they wanted their final race to end,” said Hunter. “One of the goals we tell our students to strive for is ‘compassionate competition.’

That’s what these girls went out and did.”

Vorster & Reilly named to B.C. team for U18 nationals in Regina

pair of Richmond players have been named to the Team B.C. roster for the upcoming National U18 Women’s Hockey Championships in Regina.

Defenceman Courtney Vorster and forward Kate Reilly were selected to the B.C. team following an extensive evaluation process

over the past four months.

Vorster, 16, was almost a certainty to be wearing B.C. colours again after being the youngest player named to the squad a year ago.

She also was named to Canada’s U18 national team this past summer and played

in a series of exhibition games against the United States in Calgary.

Reilly is one of just three 15-year-olds selected to the B.C. team. Ironically, both Richmond girls are currently attending Shattuck-St. Mary’s — a renowned hockey boarding school in Minnesota.

Troy Stecher has gone where few Richmond-raised hockey players have gone before, making his NHL debut on Tuesday night in the Vancouver Canucks 3-0 loss to the Ottawa Senators. The 22-year-old defenceman enjoyed an impressive training camp before being assigned to the Canucks’ American Hockey League affiliate in Utica where a solid four-game stint earned him a promotion. The Richmond Minor Hockey graduate signed as a free agent with the Canucks last spring after an impressive career at the University of North Dakota. He is the first Richmond native to play in the NHL since Ray Sawada back in 2011. The Richmond News is proud to recognize Troy as Richmond Athlete of the Month for October.

Panther Cheer Athletics launches annual philanthropic campaign P anther Cheer Athletics’ annual philanthropic campaign is off to a tremendous start.

The Richmond-based club steps away from practices and competitions to organize events that will make a difference in the community.

“We truly believe that our primary purpose is to nurture and develop amazing young people into the leaders of the future,” explained Panther Cheer co-founder Stephanie Kennedy.

“We do so, in part, by organizing and participating in philanthropic events all year to give back to our community in many different meaningful ways.”

Panther Cheer’s first big event was the “Light the Night Walk” in support of the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.

It’s a cause that has special meaning to the club with co-founder Dawn Silver and Ken-

nedy’s sister being leukaemia survivors.

Two teams spearheaded the initiative and it proved be a huge success — raising over $4300 — $1,000 more than a year ago.

The next philanthropic event is a blood drive through Canadian Blood Services and is being organized and spearheaded by club’s Open team (athletes 17+). It will take place Saturday Nov. 26 at Homma Elementary School in Steveston.

“The primary aim of our involvement in this event is to encourage as many new donors out in hopes that they become regulars,” added Kennedy.

On Saturday, the club is holding its 3rd annual Trunk or Treat event for kids ages 10 & under from 5-6 p.m..

Here are some safety tips to keep ghosts and goblins safe: Fireworks Celebrate wisely! Children should be taught that fireworks are not toys and should not be picked up if found.

The use of fireworks by untrained individuals may result in unnecessary injuries, so why not enjoy a fireworks display by professionals at one of Richmond’s four fireworks shows?

Trickers should: wear flame resistant and light-coloured or reflective clothing to be seen easily by motorists carry a flashlight as a light source be able to see well through a mask or use makeup instead travel in groups, preferably with a parent or guardian wait until parents have checked treats before eating avoid carrying sharp or pointed objects

Treaters should: ensure the pathway to their front door is well-lit only hand out commercially wrapped treats, coupons, gift certificates drive slowly and watch for pedestrians on the road watch for goblins when backing out of your driveway Please note that under Richmond’s Fire Protection and Life Safety Bylaw 8306, offences and fines include purchasing fireworks ($1,000 fine), displaying fireworks for safe ($1,000 fine), selling or distributing fireworks ($1,000 fine) or possession of fireworks without a permit ($200 fine). A zero tolerance approach will be taken.
