f ever there was a case of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” it would be Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

YVR has won a cargo-hold of awards for everything from its green technology, to its service efficiency, to its remarkable design and art installations.

Add to that, the Man in Motion, Rick Hansen, has called it the most accessible airport in the world — and he’s been to a few.

Not everyone in Richmond has been thrilled with the airport’s noise or its impact on the ecologically sensitive area surrounding it, but at least they’ve had a voice. One of my early reporting assignments for the Richmond News was covering a two-day conference hosted by YVR’s then CEO, Larry Berg.

Everyone from members of the public to a representative from the Suzuki Foundation (David Suzuki’s daughter, actually), and local politicians and airline representatives, were there to discuss Berg’s 40-year plan.

I doubt we’d see that kind of community engagement if the airport was sold off to private investors — an idea the federal Liberals appear to be considering (see page 7).

Currently, YVR is a not-for-profit, which doesn’t mean it doesn’t make a profit, rather the profit it does make goes back into servicing the travelling public. (In fact, that’s why the expression has changed from non-profit to not-for-profit; a business may make a profit, but that’s not its raison d’tre.)

Regardless, to turn YVR into a for-profit entity, would mean an end to the kind of consultation we’ve seen to date.

Moreover, a good chunk of the money that currently goes into giving YVR the polish it has, would be funnelled into servicing lenders and rewarding shareholders.

The not-for-profit model is, in part, what has made YVR a standout facility. It would be a shame to see that dismantaled.

Moreover, the airport’s financial model sets an example. We tend to equate notfor-profit with charities and for-profit with business. But we needn’t limit ourselves.

YVR shows that not-for-profit and business success can go together. Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC), one of the largest outdoor equipment stores in Canada, is another example.

But back to the point, the rationale for selling YVR off to private investors is to help pay for the federal government’s planned infrastructure program. There’s a certain logic there: the government could see a big return from the sale, and infrastructure has to be paid for somehow. But it’s extremely short-sighted, and grounding success doesn’t make sense in any business model.

Dear Editor, Re: “Bridge interchange a potential boon for drivers,” Letters, Oct. 19.

Aaron Yims six points of scientific theory are laughable.

Having lived in Richmond or Marpole my entire 65 years, I have witnessed, like many others, the reality of building new bridges — from the Oak Street Bridge in 1957 (which was a toll bridge at the time) to the building of the new Port Mann Bridge.

First of all, and most importantly, all new bridges do is redistribute the traffic volume to an infrastructure that can’t handle the increased pressure, turning it into a bottleneck.

For example, Highway 99 northbound is already backed up on a daily basis past Blundell.

Highway 1, coming off the new Port Mann, hits traffic bottlenecks as soon as you approach interchanges traveling westbound through the Burnaby Lakes.

The East-West Connector, is a daily bottleneck in both directions.

The list, as most commuters will testify, could go on and on and on.

However, in their theory of building bridges, the provincial government spent $800 million on the Golden Ears Bridge.

How many readers have used that one? Apparently, not many. The traffic volume is so light on that bridge local radio and TV don’t even include it in their

traffic volume reports.

But then TransLink (the Liberal government’s scape goat ) knows what’s best for us, right?

When the new bridge is built, I can hear the morning traffic report now.

“There is an accident northbound on the Oak Street Bridge .... Traffic northbound is backed up south of the bridge past Highway 17. Drivers should try using the Alex Fraser Bridge. It’s only backed up to 64th ave in Delta.”

Major new study: treating depression The October 17th issue of UCLA’s Daily Bruin newspaper reported that four universities have received a $13.9 million grant to study how elderly people with chronic depression respond to treatment. The four universities include the University of Toronto.

The study, known as “OPTIMUM,” will focus on finding options for seniors who experience treatment-resistant depression. The study is part of UCLA’s research initiative, whose goal is to decrease the health and economic effects of depression by 50% by 2050.

Lead researcher, Dr. Helen Lavretsky, says that fewer than 40% of older patients respond to primary treatments for depression, partly because of interference from the other medications they take. Dr. Lavretsky adds that the study is important because Baby Boomers are showing higher rates of depression, anxiety and substance abuse.

Social isolation, financial loss and moving to assisted living/nursing homes are stressors that make Boomers (many of whom are now seniors) more resistant to treatments.

Therefore, the study’s results will facilitate treatment choices for primary care providers by providing clinical evidence of effective treatments. Put another way, it will help treating professionals decide what treatment is best for any particular individual.

Article perpetuates stereotypes Time to fix transit for the long haul

Dear Editor, Re: “Rap song sparks safety concerns: Activists,” News, Oct. 19.

The above article about safety and the Chinese community seems to fail to address the actual issue.

The activists in the rally expressed their concern about how the song reinforced the stereotype that the “Chinese community is rich and always carries lots of cash.”

Yet, when challenged with the stats that Richmond has a relatively low crime rate compared to neighbouring municipalities, the activists used another stereotype and claimed “the figures are skewed due to assertion that people in the Chinese community, particularly in Richmond, are more reluctant to report incidents — such as robberies and break-ins — to police due to cultural differences.”

Furthermore, Wendy Yuan reinforced the concern with another stereotype by stating, “there is also a myth in some Chinese cultures that if the money is stolen, but you don’t get hurt, then it was the money that stopped you from getting injured.

They are linking this song directly to the breakins.”

Despite the arguments, banning the song does not seem to address the actual issue: the lack of trust and communication between the Chinese community and our police.

The frustration associated with the song has brought the much-needed attention to what is hurting the Richmond community. I sincerely hope that instead of rallying around the idea of banning a song, Chinese community advocates will work with Richmond RCMP on how to create valuable opportunities to cultivate trust and appreciation between the Chinese community and

RCMP. Furthermore, the Chinese community advocates can also try to develop free, conversational English lessons for individuals. The idea of starting a community group that specializes in helping Chinese immigrants with communicating with the RCMP will also help.

Everyone deserves to work, live, and thrive in a safe community. However, safety is everyone’s responsibility. Therefore, instead of asking the government to ban a song that is spreading stereotypes, we should learn to work together and build collaboration and communication within our dynamic Richmond community.

Only by working together, can we truly protect ourselves, our loved ones, and one another.

Dear Editor, The replacement bridge for the Massey Tunnel is the wrong solution to the wrong problem.

We need to find a long term solution to Metro Vancouver’s transport and transit problems. To do this, every level of government and government department must look past their own narrow mandate and plan broadly for the future. If they could do this, the Massey tunnel tie-up would be solved as part of a more comprehensive system.

Population and commuting patterns have changed significantly over the past decades, with more people living south of the Fraser River. We have very good commuting data available from the 2011 National Household Survey, and soon will have the data from the 2016 Census. We already know that people commute from every metro municipality to every other one, so just building a huge bridge to replace the Massey Tunnel won’t solve the larger problem.

People will take transit where it’s available. This includes commuters, students, retirees, tourists — everyone who needs to move around. Why spend $3.5 billion on a single bridge when that money could buy many miles of at-grade transit?

If Metro Vancouver had a regional Light Rapid Transit (LRT) system south of the Fraser that connected to municipalities north of the river, everyone who needs to travel through the tunnel would have an alternate to driving in a private vehicle. If the LRT were to run alongside the freeways, vehicle drivers would soon see the value of taking transit. Transit saves travel time, vehicle and parking expenses, and wear and tear on the driver. By taking private vehicles off the road, LRT would open up space for truck transport and tourist vehicles. A transit solution would also vastly reduce carbon emissions in the metro area and throughout the Fraser Valley.

Eventually, with our limited land mass and expanding population, we will have to develop a regional transit system. We need to start building that system now. Our transit and transportation problem is not a game, where someone wins and someone else loses. This is serious business, and it’s time the people who make the decisions, and provide funding to the municipalities, realize that taxpayers are tired of the gamesmanship and want to see genuine solutions.

Is YVR up for sale?

elling Vancouver International Airport to a private interest would be a mistake, said its president and CEO, Craig Richmond, who hopes the idea never gets off the ground.

Richmond was reacting to a recent Canadian Transportation Act Review, commissioned by the federal government, which includes the suggestion Canada’s major airports be taken out of local control and sold to help finance infrastructure spending across the country.

With an estimated market valuation of somewhere between $4-6 billion, Richmond said he can understand the attraction, but feels it would be a short-sighted move.

“I’m not against more infrastructure in Canada,” Richmond said. “And I also agree that if you sold all the major airports you’d probably get a big cheque. But therein lies the problem, because these airports have already been paid for by all the passengers and airlines coming through here and other airports.

“The government will take their money and go, but the person who buys it has to now make a reasonable rate of return,” he said. “That’s our big objection. It will raise costs and drive down customer service because this new entity (private owner) will be interested on one thing – that is getting the maximum return they can.”

There’s also the issue of losing local con-

trol of the airport to outside interests.

“If it is sold off, the decisions will be made in New York, London and Toronto,” Richmond said. “And that’s a big difference.”

He added the realization would also set in quite quickly that a sell-off was short-sighted, if Ottawa goes with that option.

“I think five years after you did it, you’d start to wonder, ‘What did we do?’ And there’s no going back,” he said. “Once you sell for several billion dollars you’re never getting it back and now it’s in the hands of people, who are not bad people, but they have one goal, to maximize the profit out of the airport. That’s the whole point. Why would they buy it otherwise?”

The airport sale was just one of the suggestions in the report titled Pathways: Connecting Canada’s Transportation System to the World that was initiated by the Stephen Harper government and written by former Conservative MP David Emerson, who was also YVR’s first president and CEO. “David has always thought airports could benefit from private capital,” Richmond said. “And if you read his recommendations, it intimates that the airport authorities would make themselves private. But what’s happened since then is that the government wants to sell them. There’s a difference between those two.”

government a total of $1.25 billion in lease payments, while investing $3.1 billion back into the airport’s infrastructure.

That financial cycle is one Coun. Bill McNulty said he would need convincing to change.

“It would be like selling the golden goose,” he said, adding YVR is home to about 5,000 jobs and is a significant, local taxpayer.

McNulty also said he was concerned a potential sale would affect Richmond’s representation on the YVR board of directors.

Currently, the city has one member, Howard Jampolsky, who was appointed by the city to the board.

“We have a very good relationship with YVR when it comes to matters like noise management and zoning under the flightpath,” McNulty said. “And whenever we’ve had issues that needed to be discussed, we’ve managed to find common ground.

“I don’t know how that would be affected by bringing in a new private interest to run things.”

Mayor Malcolm Brodie said city staff is

“We are looking at all the consequences,” he said. “As a government, we haven’t made a decision.”

Peschisolido said he first looked at the report back in July and said the overall document did not reflect the current government’s position.

“But as the government, we are doing the responsible, prudent thing and we’re examining his (Emerson’s) proposals.”

anging their drums, blowing their whistles and chanting tales of how their employer doesn’t care, the group of 40 or so Richmond hotel workers appeared undeterred by the rain bouncing off the ground.

Motivated by years of supposed increased workloads with little reward, the employees — many clad in rain ponchos and huddled under umbrellas — marched back and forth Wednesday late afternoon in front of the Sheraton Vancouver Airport on Westminster

Highway.

The majority of the hotel’s 180 unionized employees, such as housekeepers, front desk staff, bellhops and cooks, claim their workloads have significantly increased out of line with their wages since the Sheraton took over the former Best Western Richmond Inn in 2010.

And, under the steam of the UNITE Here Local 40 union, the workers want to break away from a collective bargaining system — which involves 40 other properties — and be compared with other local hotels, such as See Hotel worker page 9

Foody World, on Sexsmith Road in north Richmond, was shut down by Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) last Friday after six cases of the potentially deadly Listeria bug were traced back to processed meats bought at the store between July and last week.

One of the customers who contracted Listeriosis has since died, although VCH said the person had underlying health conditions and the death can’t, for certain, be linked to the food poisoning.

“When it was the Richmond Inn, the rooms just had two double beds,” said Jean Harvey, a single mom living in Richmond with two older children, who has been housekeeping at the hotel for 12 years.

“Now, the rooms have two queens and the standards that we need to meet are much higher now; but we still get paid the same.”

“It’s very tough with only one income coming into the house.

“We rush to finish more work in less time, and the work is causing us pain. Some of us take pain killers just to get through the day.

“We tell the company we deserve better treatment, but they don’t listen to us.”

Hospitality Industrial Relations (HIR), an

independent body, negotiates with unions on behalf of 40 properties, including, but not only, the Sheraton in Richmond.

However, the Sheraton workers want to break away from the collective bargaining model and negotiate independently with the Sheraton, citing the fact that all the properties in the 40 provide the same level of service.

Since the latest collective agreement expired on May 31, Michelle Travis, UNITE Here Local 40’s spokesperson, said summer-long discussions with the Sheraton have not progressed.

“It’s a Sheraton now, not the Richmond Inn, so they’re able to charge higher rates and workers feel they’re not being valued,” said Travis.

Calls to the hotel’s general manager were not returned by The News’ deadline.

A

n alleged sexual assault of an 18-year-old girl in a residential neighbourhood didn’t actually happen, Richmond Mounties said on Thursday morning.

Almost two weeks ago, the RCMP appealed to the public for information after the girl claimed she was sexually assaulted in the early evening of Friday, Oct. 7 as she walked alone along on Ash Street towards General Currie Road.

The girl told police she was approached from behind by a man near Paulik Park Community Garden before being pushed to the ground and forcibly, sexually assaulted. She told investigators she managed to fight off her attacker before escaping.

In the hours and days following the alleged attack, Richmond RCMP dedicated a team of seasoned investigators to the case and conducted comprehensive neighbourhood canvassing,

Asked whether charges may be laid for misleading the police and using up vital resources, Richmond RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dennis Hwang told the News that charges were “not being considered at this time.”

All police could say was that “investigators have determined that a sexual assault did not occur and that public safety is not at risk.

“We have examined this case with objective eyes and treated it with the utmost sensitivity,” added Hwang.

“After a thorough and extensive investigation, our investigators have determined that a sexual assault did not occur.

“For the community of Richmond and especially those that live around the area surrounding Paulik Park Community Garden, it is our responsibility to provide this new information and alleviate any safety concerns.”

Opposing voices for Autism Speaks walk Peaceful protest planned by dissenting group at Sunday’s annual autism event ALANCAMPBELL Staff Reporter

n annual event hosted by Autism Speaks could have a dissenting voice when it’s hosted in Richmond on Sunday.

For the first time in eight years, the Autism Speaks Canada Walk will come to Richmond, where it has found a new home in the soon-to-be-opened Good Life Fitness Family Autism Hub, near Cessna Drive on Sea Island, a centre of excellence for people living with autism spectrum disorder and their families.

As well as the leisurely, three-kilometre stroll along the dyke of the Fraser River’s middle arm, Sunday morning’s event, which is expected to attract around 2,000 people, will boast a stage with three bands and a choir, along with activities such as soccer, a tumble bus, trampolines, free food and a McDonald’s McCafe trailer with free coffee.

However, a small group from the Vancouver chapter of ASAN (Autistic Self Advocacy Network) — which is openly critical of the way Autism Speaks operates — is planning to make its voice heard on the route of Sunday’s walk and is calling on the autism community to boycott all Autism Speaks activities.

“We have protested at the walk before; we’re going to be near the finishing and starting line, but we won’t be there to disrupt the walk, just to make our presence and feelings known and to raise awareness,” said one of the protest’s organizers, Vivian Ly, who described herself as an adult, living with autism.

As well as the manner in which the U.S.-based, non-profit Autism Speaks is run, Ly said she takes serious issue with apparent disparities in the non-profits’ finances, citing an im-

balanced budget that “allocates the majority of their finances toward biomedical research, yet invests comparatively little into services and supports.”

posed “high rates of executive pay, some exceeding $400,000 a year in the U.S.,” citing reports that “51 cents of every dollar donated to Autism Speaks Canada goes to overhead costs.”

In response to the criticisms, Autism Speaks Canada said that, in 2015, a total of $2,367,923 was spent on its mission, including 54 per cent (or $1,284,743) going to Canadian research and 46 per cent (or $1,083,180) going to family services, advocacy/collaboration and awareness.

In terms of 51 cents in every dollar going to overhead costs, Autism Speaks Canada claims it is well within the Canada Revenue Agency guidelines for charities.

Autism Speaks Canada claims it “addresses every stage of life” through various aspects, including science, where it supports “cutting-edge research with real-world benefits, including specialized care,” and promotes awareness of autism via “understanding and acceptance of people with autism worldwide.”

Aside from the protest, Autism Speaks Canada’s regional walk organizer, Janet Anderson, is looking forward to the event being based permanently at the new centre, which is scheduled to open next month.

“We’ve been all over the region since we started, so it’s great to have a place we can call home,” said Anderson, of the event, which is open to the public and runs from 9 a.m. to noon and will be hosted out of the adjacent Pacific Gateway Hotel.

early 600 students, and counting, in Richmond’s school district have signed a petition calling on the Board of Education to implement a “discreet policy that addresses the specific needs of our gender and sexual minority student population.”

Grade 12 student Nathan Lee, president of Steveston-

London secondary’s Rainbow Club, is a co-organizer of the petition that will go to the board on Nov. 7.

Lee said a new mandate from the Ministry of Education to have districts include explicit references to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression in their codes of conduct does not go far enough. He is seeking a policy similar to the 46 other districts in B.C. Richmond is one of 13 that doesn’t have

a policy.

“We want to go further than [the Ministry’s order]. We feel that we don’t want to be punishing people. We want to be proactive and educate people. We want teachers to receive training so they can help understand the issues.

In the past, Lee said students have felt dismissed by administrators, all the way up to the superintendent level.

The Rainbow Club was formed in 2015 to address ongoing bullying, said Lee. “As a gay student and seeing my fellow LGBTQ friends be discriminated against in school, we wanted a place to talk openly about the issues we were experiencing,” said Lee. A new policy that goes beyond Ministry’s orders should help address misconceptions among teachers and administrators and have a spin-off effect on the public, noted Lee and his co-petitioner Kaylyn Munro,

a recent Steveston-London graduate, now a gender studies student at SFU. Bringing the issue to the forefront of the public — and two demographics in particular — is important, they noted.

“For someone who is trying to come out, or explain their specific situation, it’s really hard for them because people don’t understand,” said Munro.

“For someone who is older and has morals grounded in who they are, it’s hard to form into a new movement,” said Munro.

“It’s quite a conservative city,” added Lee. “I’ll put it plainly. People are scared of LGBT people.

They have irrational fears.

I would say it’s the demographics of Richmond,” said Lee, indicating there are cultural elements at play in the Chinese community.

nstead of having a laugh at someone else’s expense, why not flip that saying on its head and enjoy a giggle and benefit some impoverished kids?

That’s exactly what the Richmond-based non-profit Fundamentals For Change (FFC) is aiming for when it hosts a live auction on the heels of a comedy night at Vancouver club Yuk Yuk’s on Nov. 3.

FFC is aiming to raise in the region of $6,000 from the night to help continue funding a hot breakfast program for Jamaican schoolkids in the poverty-stricken shanty town of Riverton, Kingston for another two years.

And FFC —which has been funding the program along with Jamaican Ministry of Education for the last year or so — has lined up an impressive array of gifts for the auction, which takes place after the comedy acts.

On the auction block will be: a Canucks date night package (two tickets to the game and $100 gift card to Hapa Izakaya); Joe Fortes four-course seafood dinner for four with wine pairings (value $800); brunch at Shangri La for four (value $400) and a VIP Club Night package from ThisIsBluePrint.

Ayako Turnbull, co-founder of FFC, which

has been raising funds for the school in Riverton for the last few years, said the difference in the children when they receive a hot breakfast is incredible.

“I noticed myself when I was down there that many of the kids were very lethargic in the morning, some of them even sleeping, because they basically don’t get any breakfast at home before coming to school,” Turnbull told the Richmond News.

“After lunch at the school, though, they were full of life and were energetic.

“After the breakfast program was introduced, it was amazing to see the transformation in their schooling.”

The school’s lunch program is by donation from the parents, said Turnbull, but the “school principal doesn’t turn anyone away.”

Turnbull said FFC’s contribution to the program pays for two days’ worth of breakfasts per week, while the ministry pays the rest.

“More than half the school’s 130-student population comes out for the hot breakfast,” added Turnbull.

Last year, Turnbull and some of her fellow FFC members took down laptops for the school’s youth committee, along with medical supplies.

And in 2014, the group raised funds for and helped build a new playground for the schoolkids.

Just two weeks ago, Hurricane Matthew was predicted to collide with Jamaica and much of the Riverton community crammed into the school for shelter.

“They were under warning for Hurricane Matthew, but it kind of skipped off Ja-

maica,” explained Turnbull.

“These people generally live in homes with tin and tarp for roofs and they were all in there believing the hurricane was going to hit.”

he Richmond Olympic Oval Corporation is claiming expenses of close to $46,000 for sending four Oval and/or City of Richmond senior managers to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil during the Olympic Games in August to, in part, to market the recently-opened Richmond Olympic Experience (ROX) museum.

The trip came as the City of Richmondowned Oval approaches the one-year anniversary of opening ROX, its official Olympic Museum Network (OMN) facility built via funding from the Oval, as well as the city.

The Oval, once used for speed skating at the 2010 Olympic Games, is attempting to market ROX to eventually turn a profit.

Currently, the corporation does not pay rent to the city nor property taxes ($1.6 million last year), and also received upwards of $6.3 million of additional external monetary support and recorded a $1.1 million operating deficit in 2015.

Oval spokesperson Aran Kay said Oval executives were invited by the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) to “activate at Canada House” in Rio. Several reasons were given for the Oval’s “activation,” or participation, including: marketing the Oval to national and international sports organizations for high-performance sporting events and training; marketing ROX as a tourist destination; procuring sports memorabilia for ROX; and “supporting ongoing relations” with members of the International Olympic Committee, the COC and the OMN. “In addition to supporting the Canada House activation, the team also held numerous meetings with key officials from Olympic organizations, national and international sports organizations, Olympic sponsors and others,” said Kay, adding that the Oval receives “value-in-kind support for (ROX) estimated at $5-6 million annually from the IOC and COC.” Kay noted marketing the Oval is important because the facility’s high-performance program generates more than $1 million a year in revenues. Meanwhile, hosting highperformance events generates an average of $235,000 in annual revenues, added Kay. Heading to Rio were George Duncan, who

wears two hats, that of the City of Richmond’s chief administrative officer as well as the Oval’s CEO, John Mills, the Oval’s chief operating officer, Shana Turner, the Oval’s director of finance, and John Irving, Richmond’s director of engineering.

Kay said the Oval compensated the City of Richmond for the time Duncan and Irving were spending on Oval-related business.

He said the Rio trip was paid for by money raised through ROX sponsorship funds, which is directed into a general account and used for “extraordinary expenses” for ROX. Sponsor dollars directed to ROX can be used for various things, said Kay. Among the handful of local sponsors are YVR, River Green and Richberry Group. River Green’s residents received member passes to the Oval in return for its sponsorship, but any details beyond that are confidential, Kay explained.

Aside from sponsorship — which depends on the Oval’s Olympic branding — the Oval is said to be economically dependent on outside monetary support, thus an importance is placed on drawing in visitors, new members to use its recreational facilities, as well as organizations to host events.

In 2015, the Oval had $16.1 million in total revenues, including $7.6 million in membership, admission and program fees. Additionally, 2015 Oval revenues include the city’s $3.8 million of contributions, as well as a $2.5 million grant from the 2010 Games Operating Trust Fund (established by the federal government, the trust fund supports post-

Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games facilities. It has a balance of $54 million dedicated to the Oval). Additionally, the Oval operates with a $1 annual lease and property tax exemptions.

Last year it had expenses of $13.7 million, of which $7.9 million goes to salaries, including Mills’ $227,000 of compensation.

When factoring out the city’s contributions and other expenses and revenues, the Oval actually recorded a $1.1 million operating deficit, according to the city’s 2015 financial statements. Since 2011 (post Games), it has accumulated losses of about $2.2 million even with approximately $16 million of support from the city during that time.

Factoring in the city’s contributions, in 2015, the Oval realized a $2.4 million surplus, put towards a reserve used for facility repairs.

Included in the aforementioned total revenues for 2015 was an additional $500,000 transfer from Tourism Richmond’s hotel tax reserve to purchase assets for ROX. To build ROX, a $10 million facility, $2.5 million of municipal funds, as well as $2.5 million of hotel taxes, were used.

In 2014, the Oval, a subsidiary of the city, creatwed a subsidiary company of its own called VROX Sport Simulation Ltd., a Victoriabased company, which is 50 per cent owned by the Oval. It has five directors, four of whom are Oval executives, including Duncan and Turner. The non-Oval director is Robert Stanners, who operates a virtual reality company, VRX Advanced Simulators.

According to the Oval’s annual public

report, VROX was created to build three of ROX’s five sport simulators (bobsleigh, kayak, sit-ski, racecar and ski jump), which together are touted as the biggest draw for tourists to the facility.

“VROX is a government partnership established to develop, manufacture and sell sport simulators to the Oval and third party customers, as well as to maintain the simulators for the Oval,” notes a city’s financial statement.

Few financial details of VROX are released in the Oval’s public reports, other than the fact it realized revenues of $868,880 and expenses of $798,001 in 2015, for a profit of $70,879.

Kay said no further details are available, as it is a private company.

“We have to respect our private partners’ rights,” said Kay. As this is the first year of ROX operating there are no reports on its financial status, Kay added.

The Oval set a target of 11,590 ROX visitors for 2016, said to be a conservative estimate as marketing ramps up (an effort paid for by a $575,000 boost from the City of Richmond in 2015).

Part of selling ROX has involved meetings with members of the Olympic Museum Network. For that, Turner has been tasked to travel to Europe annually for meetings with museum officials. For instance, in 2014 Turner went to Helsinki for the OMN Collections and OMN General Assembly, for three weeks, costing $9,466, according to expense records.

The IOC-sanctioned OMN consists of 22 facilities worldwide, whose stated goal is to promote the Olympic movement. Its purpose is also to encourage cooperation between the museums, such as sharing collections and developing efficiencies.

Each museum has a different set of memorabilia. Some, including ROX, include a national or local sports hall of fame (the Oval has the Richmond Wall of Fame for prominent local athletes). Regular adult prices vary among the facilities: The main OMN facility in Lausanne, Switzerland costs 15 Swiss Francs (about $20 Canadian.) Greece’s Thesaloniki Olympic Museum costs two Euros (about $3 Canadian) and the Seoul Olympic Museum, consisting of static displays, is free. Meanwhile, ROX costs $17.

hile many non-Jews are likely to know their Jewish friends celebrate Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur during the High Holidays, few may be familiar with another biblical holiday that follows the more mainstream ones.

Sukkot marks the remembrance of Israelites performing their famous pilgrimage, led by Moses and at the will of God, to free themselves from slavery in Egypt. The week-long holiday comes at the time of harvest and thus has an agricultural feel to it.

At The Bayit Connect — a small orthodox synagogue that has made an office space at No. 3 Road and Steveston Highway a special place of gathering for its 50-family congregation — members have created a sukkah, a temporary dwelling that signifies where Israeli farmers lived during their 40 years of travel.

A traditional sukkah may typically be made of wood and bamboo and covered with palm leaves.

get soaked,” quipped Rabbi Mendy Feigelstock, speaking to the wet, fall weather.

In the Bayit’s parking lot on Wednesday, families gathered for pizza in the sukkah.

The congregation dubbed the event “Pizza in the Hut.” “Every year we build a big one for the community and hold events for the people during the holiday,” said Feigelstock, who was pleased to welcome Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

Typically, Jews may sleep in their sukkahs, but considering more people live in multi-family units, the Bayit’s sukkah is becoming ever more important to teach children of the Book of Exodus.

“If we don’t do this event,

their kids will never be able to eat and celebrate within it,” said Feigelstock.

Biyat’s president Michael Sachs said the orthodox Jewish community in Richmond remains small but steady.

Older people have left, leading to a downtick in the population, he said, however, more recently, newcomers have arrived. According to Statistics Canada’s 2011 National Household Survey, just 160 people speak Hebrew as their primary language at home in Richmond. This was down from 180 in 2006.

I

f you can’t make it to Venice anytime soon, you can bring the taste of Venice into your life by exploring the delicious wines of nearby Valpolicella.

Located west of Venice and north of Shakespeare’s ‘Fair Verona’, the Valpolicella region is characterized by soft sloped hills covered with vineyards, olive and cherry trees. And delicious reds.

After Chianti, Valpolicella is the second most important wine region in Italy. The red wines are made from three indigenous grape varieties only found within the Verona province: Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella.

Of the four levels of Valpolicella, I recently enjoyed the Valpolicella DOC, Valpolicella Ripasso DOC, and Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG. The Classico is the least expensive and is meant for everyday consumption. The Bolla 2014 Valpolicella Classico ($13.99 until Oct. 29) is a bright fruity red with an inviting aroma of black cherries.

Although it has a medium light body, it has the Italian savoury flavour along with dried berries, raisins, and a hint of bitter almonds.

Often compared to France’s Beaujolais, it is youthful and has soft tannins which are easy to enjoy. Try it chilled for half an hour in the fridge. Delicious with stuffed artichokes (http://www.bcliquorstores.com/recipe/food/ stuffed-artichokes), roast chicken, and rabbit.

licella Classico (54.99), on the other hand, is fairly expensive but a bargain for the quality.

It is made in a unique method where the grapes are dried on racks in lofts for four months. The raisiny grapes have concentrated flavours and sugars and although the sugars are fermented to dryness, there is the illusion of sweetness.

The Tommasi has a brick-red edge to its dark ruby colour. I adore the perfumed bouquet of cherries, vanilla, spice, and violets.

It has a smooth yet full body with flavours of ripe boysenberries and cherries and a hint of umami mushrooms.

If you are looking for something less pricey than Amarone, a great alternative is Valpolicella Ripasso DOC. It is basically a compromise between the light Valpolicella and the heartier Amarone. It begins with Amarone skins which are steeped in the regular Valpolicella for two to three weeks.

Compared with Valpolicella, the Folonari 2014 Ripasso Valpolicella Classico Superiore ($17.99) is heavier but smoother and has a more complex bouquet and flavour. Expect cherry and balsamic, with ripe fruit, some smokiness and tar with a longer finish.

The Folarni Ripasso wines can be served with a number of dishes such as porcini mushroom risotto and pasta. But they are at their best when paired with robust mains involving roasted veal or lamb or braised or barbequed red meats like steak, sausage and venison. Ripasso also goes well with aged cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano.

uilt on a foundation that delivers impressive capability, excellent longevity, and strong resale values, the Toyota 4Runner stays true to its reputation year after year.

Relying on its 70 years of truck-building experience, Toyota kept refining the 4Runner until it’s almost “perfect,” particularly as a true off-roader.

“When adventure calls, it calls for 4Runner’s winning combination of rugged good looks, go-anywhere capability, and surprising comfort and convenience features,” said Larry Hutchinson, Vice President of Toyota Canada Inc. “For 2016, Toyota has added even more convenience features as standard on all 4Runner models, underlining our commitment to Canadian drivers who need an authentic body-on-frame SUV.” Body-on-frame SUVs are a dying breed, but there are still a few that compete with the Toyota 4Runner: the Nissan Xterra, Jeep Wrangler, and the much more expensive Land Rover LR2.

Even though I’ve driven just about every car and truck sold in North America, I was impressed enough with the ever-strong 4Runner that I recently purchased a brand new 2016 4Runner Limited. If a picky automotive journalist like myself selects this vehicle, you know it has to be pretty good. One of the big factors for my decision is that the 4Runner keeps amazing level of resale value, year after year.

The 4Runner is built at the award-winning Tahara plant in Japan, where many other Lexus models are also manufactured.

n Design

Toyota released an updated 4Runner back in 2014, and therefore not much has changed on the outside for 2016. The 4Runner has a slightly different “face” among its four available models, however.

For a more rugged and aggressive appearance, the SR5 and Trail Edition have a gaping grille and crescent-

shaped intakes below the headlights. But the Limited models lose the sharp intakes and add a chrome bumper to divide the grille for a more luxurious look.

Carrying on the style of its predecessors, the 2016 4Runner retains a boxy overall shape. All models come standard with a roof rack, but the Trail Edition adds a hood scoop and a higher ground clearance.

Inside, the high quality materials make the 4Runner feel comfortable, but not quite at the level of the Highlander. The blocky layout reminds you the 4Runner is based on a truck, though there is plenty of usable storage.

The 4Runner is basically a five-passenger vehicle, but the more luxurious Limited model is available in either five-Passenger or sevenPassenger configuration.

n Performance

The 4Runner gained its popularity through its strong performance and its reputation as being indestructible.

This is something the 2016 model continues to offer.

In that effort, the 4Runner is built around a proven and powerful, yet efficient, 4.0-litre V6. At its peak, it generates 270 hp and 278 lb.-ft. of torque, but what it does best is balance power delivery and efficiency across its operating range.

Although not the latest technology features six or seven-speed gears, the 4Runner is equipped with a proven five-speed super ECT automatic transmission. Using a transmission cooler, it delivers confident acceleration and endurance in any weather or driving condition, while also returning a combined fuel economy rating of 12.8L/100km.

The 4Runner’s suspension delivers a decent combination of ride comfort and cornering ability. However, its height and weight causes it to lean considerably if pushed hard through a switchback.

Devils shine on international stage Mark Booth

The Richmond Devils took to the international stage Tuesday night and showed just exactly what they are capable off.

The current frontrunners in the South Coast Women’s Hockey League, featuring 15 homegrown players in their line-up, went toe-to-toe with the Chinese national team before dropping a 2-1 decision in front of a packed arena at the Richmond Ice Centre. The game was part of an exhibition series for Team China that concludes this weekend with two more games in Richmond — on Saturday against the SCWHL Selects at Minoru (6:30 p.m.) and Sunday versus the Pacific Steelers at the Olympic Oval (7 p.m.).

Devils head coach Tony Cheema didn’t know what to expect against the world’s 15th ranked team. His squad is off to its best-ever regular season start (5-0-0) but this was against an opponent that trains year-round with a full-time professional staff.

The Chinese team is typically based out of Ontario as it tries to elevate its game

over the next six years — leading up to the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

An intense schedule includes further games in Europe in the coming months in preparation for the 2017 Group B Division II World Hockey Championships in New Zealand next April.

The Devils got off to a tentative start and were hemmed in their own zone for the opening minutes of play. However, they slowly gained confidence and realized they could more than hold their own.

Richmond generated some excellent chances in the second period but it was Mengying Zhang who opened the scoring for China. The ‘Lady Dragons’ made it 2-0 in the opening minute of the third period before Meadow Ridge pickup Kirsten Langston put the hosts on the board with 3:23 remaining.

“One of the first things I told the girls after the game is they showed me another level they are capable of,” said Cheema. “I was very proud of them and was a lot of fun.

“I think they were a little intimidated at first, just with the opening ceremonies and

seeing all the coverage this team was getting. It’s something they weren’t used to.”

While the team’s may have been fairly even in skills and “hockey sense” China figured to have a significant

advantage from a fitness standpoint — training seven days a week with a fulltime strength and condition coach.

“That was something I was thinking about before the

game,” added Cheema. “Our girls are in fairly good shape but it was playing three stop time periods against a team where hockey is their jobs. They really showed me something.”

Seafair Bantam A1 Islanders have now turned their attention to Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association placement play after a sizzling start to their season.

The Islanders improved 3-2 in PCAHA action after back-to-back wins over Abbotsford (3-1) and Langley (1-0) this week. It’s a record that would likely be better had they had not come off to exhausting tournament runs in both their losses.

Seafair began its season by capturing Kelowna Minor Hockey’s Bantam Tier One Tournament, then prevailed again a week later at its own Icebreaker Tournament in dominating fashion.

The hosts rolled to six consecutive victories, including a 7-0 romp of Abbotsford in the championship game. The Islanders outscored their opponents 39-8 over the three days — surprising even their veteran head coach who has seen his share of elite teams over the years.

The only time his team was really pushed at the Icebreaker was in a 6-4 round-robin win over Semiahmoo — a game that was tied at 4-4 in the third period. The Islanders would double their friendly rivals again (6-3) in the semi-finals and promptly took care of everyone else.

“That did surprise me a little bit,” said Weber of his team’s dominance. “We just seemed to be hitting on all cylinders.”

The Islanders’ strength is in the back-end where their blueline fea-

tures an outstanding group — that includes Noah Boroditsky, Joshua Wessels, Bradley Araki-Young, Carson Kostner, Vincent Thrum and Hayden Tuba. All but one are in their second-year at the Bantam rep level.

“It’s a fairly large defence where these kids are bigger than most (at this age level),” continued Weber.

“They are also very mobile — really like the new millennial defenceman we are seeing that are quick and physical too.”

Seafair is also receiving excellent

goaltending from first-year Bantams Ajeetpal Gundarah and Dylan Tsang — two of six rookies on the team.

Gundarah recorded shutouts in both tournament finals — including a 1-0 victory over Prince George in Kelowna.

Upfront, the forwards include: Michael Abgrall, Jordan Si, Carson Bigras, Ryan Xu, Logan Nelson Van Lupien, Ethan Riesterer, Diego Montinola, Brice Kemp and Mattias Hohlweg.

Weber says the early season success can also be attributed to excellent team chemistry — something that never is a certainty. The majority of players attend two schools — McMath Secondary and Vancouver College.

The Islanders dropped a 3-0 decision to perennial powerhouse Burnaby Winter Club a day after the Icebreaker — an encouraging result given the circumstances, according to Weber. He is looking forward to visiting the North Shore Winter Club to see how his rested team stacks up against another juggernaut.

“There is no reason why this can’t be a final four team and we see what happens from there,” added Weber. “We need to be playing our best hockey then and be healthy too.”

Rapids pair off to World Cup Richmond Rapids swimmer Nicolaas Dekker and head coach Rob Pettifer left for Singapore Monday, traveling to the first of three tour sites for the FINA World Cup. The circuit is a series of two-day short course meets that has been going on since the end of August. The series is divided into three-city “clusters,” with meets across Europe and Asia.

Pettifer and Dekker, along with other staff and athletes representing Canada, are at the third and final cluster. The meet goes Friday and Saturday.

The trip comes on the heels of a week in

Victoria for a technical and training camp with the Swimming Canada High Performance Center.

Both Pettifer and Dekker spent most of the seven days with a full training schedule.

It included water sessions and weight training, plus sessions with mental performance specialists and SNC biomechanists.

Once the meet in Singapore is over, the pair will travel to Tokyo, and then Hong Kong. Updates and videos can be found at fina.org. Keep in mind that Singapore is 15 hours ahead when trying to watch live streams.
