few weeks back, my editor, Eve Edmonds, mused at the fact she put her reporter’s hat back on for a school board meeting.

She forgot her pen. It’s a tough gig.

On Tuesday night, the real McCoy returned to cover another important meeting.

This one was a bit different, however, and it reminded me why journalism is still critically important, despite industry struggles.

Juggling my pen, notepad, camera and cellphone, I arrived to hear trustees denounce the school closure process. One reason cited was a letter to the editor, written by local MLAs, who made some lofty — and arguably imprecise — promises (page 16).

Two trustees held up the Richmond News to show their “golden ticket.”

Point being, following countless articles on school closures and a letters page that gave citizens a voice, the News was a relevant factor in fostering discourse between trustees, the public and local politicians on a critically important subject.

It had done its job.

It was also refreshing to see regional media attend the board meeting because a vibrant, diverse fifth estate — fed by local news outlets — is important to democracy.

As comedian/pundit John Oliver noted recently: “The media is a food chain, which would fall apart without local newspapers.”

Consider how many Richmond stories you read about on “news” websites such as DailyHive, or see on TV, that originate from the desk of a local news reporter. I’ve yet to spot a digital reporter at a committee meeting (but I hope to soon). Those meetings may not be thrilling, but they are what help keep the public informed and politicians accountable.

And just look at the ripple effect Globe and Mail reporter Kathy Tomlinson’s investigative work on real estate has had on other outlets, least to mention the effect on policy and regulatory changes.

Oliver notes industry trends can be reversed, at least in part, by its readers.

It may be time to consider buying that online story. Or, click on and share that original (News) story first, not the “repackaged” one.

Local newspapers are essential for healthy community dialogue. If we don’t support them, we run the risk of being fed a diluted brand of “news,” by government public relations masters and self-accredited, privateinterest lobbyists.

As The Wire creator and former Baltimore Sun reporter David Simon told a U.S. Senate hearing, in 2009, with regards to losses in local journalism: “There’s no glory in that kind of journalism, but that is the bedrock of what keeps...

“God, the next 10-15 years in this country are going to be a halcyon era for state and local political corruption.”

Three years ago, a driver tried to squeeze by me in a construction zone above the posted speed. The result was a broken left elbow...he did not stop.

I used to ride on the sidewalk, giving due respect of course, to pedestrians. Last year, I passed four members of the Richmond RCMP Bike squad, also on the sidewalk. They also know better. Mr. Roodnick’s estimate of one per cent of Richmond drivers being “bad” is, I believe, grossly understated.

The writer had three suggestions for improvement. I have one more...stop handing out drivers licences from cereal boxes.

Cyclists, fear yourselves

Dear Editor, Re: “I don’t want to break the law,” Letters, Oct. 12 In a recent letter, elementary school student William Li said, “But there was one person who honked at me, like I was doing something wrong, which I wasn’t.”

I am shocked that elementary school students are being put in danger due to the lack of bike lanes, as well as bad and ill-informed drivers. Do we have to wait until some young students are killed or injured before we act?

William is showing us the way forward when he states, “I would like to ask the city to put more bike lanes on major roads, and increase knowledge of biking laws to the public.”

I would also like to ask the Richmond News to do some journalistic research on bicycling accidents and dangerous locations in Richmond.

Dear Editor, Re: “Cyclists need protection,” Letters, Oct. 12.

I’m writing this from my wheelchair as a result of being hit by a distracted driver on July 22. I was biking to Safeway (on No. 2 Road) and was about to turn into the parking lot from the driveway leading to No. 2 Road.

The driver had previously looked in my direction, and I indicated I was proceeding straight through. He then turned his attention to his left. Passing his 12 o’clock, he gunned it, striking my bike on the rear wheel.

The result was a broken leg, knee, wrist and shoulder. The driver got out of his car and said he was sorry, he didn’t see me....duh.

The Chief Actuary’s Report: The Future It’s now old news that June’s Enhanced CPP Agreement has been approved, with BC’s recent blessing.

Meanwhile, the Chief Actuary, Mr. Vettese, has released a new report on the Future of our CPP. The report notes that we are very “early on,” and deeper analyses need to be done (and will be) later.

The writers also state that the CPP enhancement is moderate. A higher one was not possible in our “fragile” economy.

Certainly, our CPP contributions will gradually increase over the coming decade, which will be important, partly because (in my opinion) payouts will rise in the coming years, as more and more Canadians reach retirement age and apply for CPP benefits.

In addition, contributions will have to rise in later decades to finance larger payout amounts for younger Canadians as they reach retirement age, which this enhanced CPP seems mainly designed for. Since younger Canadians are also expected to live longer than their parents, they will need CPP benefits over a longer time.

The moral of this story? Try to continue saving, however old you are!

MLAs insult our intelligence Dear Editor, Re: “School safety is paramount, say MLAs” Letters, Oct. 5.

Since the start of the seismic mitigation program (SMP), the BC Liberal– led government has delivered on four seismic remediation projects in Richmond, not three, as the Richmond MLAs have stated in their letter. Those projects were Steveston High (2007), Old Mitchell School (2008), Garden City (2009), and Brighouse (2011).

The SMP provided the following seismic remedies for Steveston and Old Mitchell: demolition of the building.

Garden City received a retrofit, and Brighouse was rebuilt, for the dual reason of cost to repair and the increasing number of central Richmond children. Gilmore elementary was advanced to the planning stages of the SMP and, surprise, was identified as a demolition project that the Richmond School Board declined to advance to the “construction” phase.

Will there be any schools left in Richmond after the provincial government finishes “remediating” them?

That the MLAs in Richmond want to get kudos for seismically mitigating TWO schools in nearly 10 years shows how much contempt they have for the intelligence of the average voter. That Richmond MLAs think bulldozing another two schools is a seismic repair, is shameful.

Suggesting that Cook and Hugh Boyd may be “considered” for the

SMP this year is disingenuous. Cook is past its expected lifespan, and is facing increasing enrolment pressures in the City Centre. Replacing Cook needs to happen soon, seismic risks or not. Hugh Boyd is a secondary school, and as secondary schools have excess capacity, upgrading Hugh Boyd is doubtful. So, the government will consider it… and reject it.

Our MLAs are downloading responsibility for the SMP onto the school board as surely as they are downloading the rising costs of education. Richmond MLAs state that “the pace of projects is largely dependent on how quickly and efficiently local school boards map out their priorities” but the Richmond School Board has been asking for project approvals every single year for the last seven years.

And nothing has been approved.

Richmond has 25 schools at risk in an earthquake, and over 7,000 children, plus educators and staff inside them. In British Columbia, 26 per cent of H1 (highest risk) schools waiting to be approved are in Richmond, while most are in Vancouver. Surrey, Victoria, and Ucluelet are tied in third place at just four per cent. Our MLAs are supposed to champion our city. If this is what their careful stewardship looks like, I’ll take my chances with someone else.

When an immovable object meets an irresistible force, the latter will succeed every time.

With the formidable resistance of mothers, Kelly Greene, Kim Nowitsky, Emi Dyck and others, it was just a matter of when, not if, the Richmond Board of Education would raise the white flag.

Just as a mother grizzly protecting her cubs is a terrifying sight, so too was the determination from these mother’s who made it abundantly clear, they would never accept the closing of their children’s schools.

The people have spoken and it is a wondrous thing to see democracy in action and how a small group of committed citizens can challenge and defeat, bureaucratic decisions that make no sense.

An A+ for all these Richmond mothers who have taught us the value of defiance.

Dear Editor: Re: “Richmond schools dodge closure, ball now in MLA’s court,” RichmondNews.com.

The fact that Richmond Board of Education has terminated the school closure process is good news for parents of children. It also highlights how the coordinated advocacy of these parents can produce results, particularly with a looming election. (It is unfortunate that the actions, or inaction, of the BC Liberals and our three MLA’s resulted in so much stress!)

The question I have is why we focus in on seismic upgrading of schools as opposed building new schools? After all, the schools in Richmond do not appear to be of any architectural or historical significance.

My understanding is that the government will fund seismic upgrades, but if during the course of the upgrade additional work (plumbing, electrical, etc.)

is required, the board must provide the funding. Splitting the cost does not make the project any more cost effective to the taxpayer who’s funds both.

Why would we not adopt the model used for Richmond High, build a new school on the existing site then demolish the old school and restore the fields.

This would result in the elimination of numerous issues plaguing existing schools (asbestos in drywall, insulation, etc., lead in drinking water, rot, mould…) and reduce maintenance and operating cost with more efficient heating and electrical systems. New schools can also be built faster and sized to fit future needs.

When the life cycle cost, including maintenance and operating cost and health safety, is considered, new schools should be receiving more consideration than seismic upgrades.

Low density means high prices Dear Editor, We wonder why housing prices are so high in Richmond and in most other areas of Metro Vancouver and we blame demand.

But when we closely examine how we supply the market with new housing, we can’t ignore population density and how low it is close to our urban centre.

Richmond is a great example of how single family homes on relatively large lots occupy too much of the developable land base in Richmond. If you exclude the land in Richmond that is in the ALR and you just calculate current population density on the re-

maining 61.4 per cent of the island city’s land base outside the ALR, which is 30.63 square miles (19,605 acres), Richmond’s current population density is just less than half of that of Vancouver (47 per cent), a city that has far too much single family housing.

Remember, Richmond is served by a rapid transit system and major highways. We have neighbourhood centres with little density around them.

It’s time we grow up and grow to meet the needs of future residents.

Should seniors be forced to the street?

Dear Editor, It appears as if Richmond is following in Vancouver’s foot-steps on many issues these days. Like Vancouver’s little brother, we seems to be reluctant to make a serious decision for ourselves.

Vancouver city council has said it will build more affordable housing in response to a growing need. Where does Richmond stand?

Richmond’s council needs to show us, the residents, that they understand that our city is different from Vancouver. There is obviously a huge gap between the rich and poor in Richmond. People are somehow able to afford multi-million dollar homes, which are supposed to bring in thousands of dollars in property tax to the city, and yet we somehow lack the funds for social housing, a shelter for women and children, and enough mental health teams to address the growing number

When did Richmond become an enclave for the rich? Something smells here, and it isn’t the composting facility.

City hall needs to wake up and attend to the needs of those who need it most. It can’t brush poverty, mental illness and homelessness under a rug and hope it goes away.

Just because Richmond is an island, does not mean we are not affected by the social issues of our province and our country.

As a volunteer at Chimo Crisis Services, I know one of the biggest issues is housing.

When will oval pay property tax?

Dear Editor: Re: “City of Richmond launches 2017 budget consultation,” News, Oct. 7.

Last Friday’s News included an invitation from Richmond council to hear citizen concerns and priorities for 2017 budget planning.

The same News edition included a paid advertisement promoting “Best Membership Deal of the Year! 3 Months Free Until Nov 15th” for the Oval.”

What is the cost to taxpayers to pay for the “FREE” three-month memberships and advertisement? When will the oval be subject to property tax on its $232,000,000 (BC Assess-

ment) property on the same basis as other privately operated fitness facilities? When will the oval be profitable (real cash) in addition to paying property tax to Richmond? What is the combined total property tax forgiven on the oval property? How does the oval qualify as profitable, when privy to government grants and free of property tax obligations?

I suspect real Richmond taxpayers would appreciate hearing details of oval finances from Richmond City Council. That is my priority.

Flag stands for more than boundaries Dear Editor, Re: “Raising flag raises ire,” News, Oct. 5 During our last Canada Day celebrations, the inhabitants of a house near us prominently displayed, alone, the national flag of Communist China. I found this particularly disrespectful, especially on that day, but it also reminded me of a conversation I had heard in a local restaurant between what I assume were visiting Chinese citizens and a young Asian woman who sounded like she had been born in Canada. When asked by a member of the nearby group if she had ever visited China, she replied that she had no interest in doing so. When asked why she wasn’t interested, she simply replied that she liked having her freedoms. One young man testily stated that she was misinformed about life in China. She responded by pointing out that if he were to go to Robson and Granville

in Vancouver, wave the Chinese flag or a placard villifying the Canadian government and calling for its removal, nobody would pay much attention to him. On the other hand, if she were to go to Tiananmen Square and wave a placard calling for the overthrow of the Chinese government, she would probably be arrested and jailed, or worse.

I have always regretted not congratulating that young women on her illustration of this fundamental difference between the Chinese government and ours. By doing so, she also reminded us that flags are symbols that betoken the inherent values and principles by which the represented society abides — they are not just designators of national territory and boundaries as MP Joe Peschisolido shamefully rationalizes.

everal notices printed in Chinese, offering a cheat service for students, were posted on bulletin boards around Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s (KPU) Richmond campus last week.

A member of the public, who was on the campus to meet someone, contacted the Richmond News about the ghost-writing operation and expressed his shock and disgust at seeing such notices on university bulletin boards.

The man, who asked not to be named, first spotted the offending advert last Tuesday. By Wednesday evening, university bosses had been alerted and, after the notices had been translated, they were all removed from the boards in question.

The notices claimed the service provided “professional writing” by both Caucasian and Chinese staff for subjects such as English language, Asian studies and philosophy and also offered a plagiarism detection service.

They also appeared to have an official KSA (Kwantlen Students Association) stamp in the top corner, giving the impression the notices were approved by the KSA. However, a member of staff at the KSA in the Richmond campus told the News the stamp had been faked, before pointing out that all notices need to have some English content so that everyone can understand what’s being communicated.

The member of staff, who didn’t want to be named as he wasn’t the official KSA spokesperson, said the

organization is still trying to figure out how their stamp was duplicated.

Corry Anderson-Fennell, Kwantlen’s manager of media and communications, said material posted on bulletin boards is, in general, done on an honour system.

Dr. Jane Fee, KPU’s vice-provost, students, said upon learning of the notices last Wednesday, the university immediately had them translated and subsequently removed — a process, said Fee, which took around two hours.

“KPU would consider a ghostwritten essay an example of cheating, which is a serious educational offence that is subject to discipline, ranging from a grade of zero being awarded for the paper to expulsion from the university,” added Fee in a written statement to the News.

“It is unfortunate that someone decided to promote ghostwriting services on our campus. Essays, papers, lectures, practicums, exams, class discussions, and projects all contribute to our students’ cumulative learning.”

A

veteran hockey and baseball coach, with ties to Richmond youth sports, is facing nine criminal charges relating to child pornography and voyeurism.

Randy Downes, 59, of Coquitlam, has been involved with youth sports across Metro Vancouver for more than 30 years, Coquitlam RCMP announced Tuesday afternoon.

He has coached and managed various levels of hockey and baseball since the 1990s and photographed hockey, baseball and soccer.

According to the Richmond Minor Hockey Association’s (RMHA) Facebook page, Downes was named head coach of the organization’s atom A1 team for the 2014/15 season.

The posting, in May 2014, added that Downes brought a “wealth of coaching experience and success to our organization...”

It’s unclear how long Downes coached in Richmond, but it’s understood he’s no longer with RMHA. Carolyn Hart, RMHA presi-

BC Hockey indicated the RCMP has said that it appears there are no links between Downes’ alleged victims and hockey and that he has been suspended from hockey activities.

by Downes, to determine whether any of the images found in his computer were of those he coached.

“Thirty years is a long time, so we want to make sure if there were any incidents in the last three decades that people have the ability to come forward to the police now.”

The evidence suggests the suspect did not have sexual contact with the children and that they did not know they were being photographed, Phillipson said.

The images related to the criminal charges were mixed in with Downes’ professional sports photos but were taken in a public setting that meets the threshold for voyeurism and child pornography, he added.

“If there’s a specific focus on a child’s body part in a public setting, even clothed, it does meet the threshold for child pornography if you can prove that it was for a sexual purpose,” Phillipson said.

The charges were approved Tuesday morning after a six-month investigation that started with a tip from the BC Integrated Child Exploitation Unit.

entral at Garden City — Richmond’s newest shopping centre, with Walmart as its anchor tenant— will open for business on Thursday, Oct. 27.

A number of the tenants in the 372,000-square-feet, outdoor retail complex, which stretches eastward from the northeast corner of Alderbridge Way and Garden City Road and includes Walmart and Marshalls, will open their doors on that day, along with several other stores.

The mall’s developer and owner, SmartCentres, said it couldn’t confirm exactly what stores are opening on that day as it’s entirely up to the tenant when it wants to start trading.

SmartCentres’ vice president of corporate affairs, Sandra Kaiser, said the rest of the tenants will open up for business in the days and weeks following Oct. 27, with a mall grand opening not expected until next

An estimated 975 jobs — about 240 at Walmart alone, which accounts for half the centre’s retail space — will be created as a result of the development.

To mark the grand opening of its Richmond store, Marshalls will donate $5,000 to Kids Help Phone. Its grand opening will take place at 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 27.

In addition to retail shopping, the new mall will

present plenty of dining opportunities representing a mixture of recognizable chains, such as Fat Burger and Fresh Slice Pizza, and those smaller, independent eateries represented by the likes of Ajisho Japanese Restaurant.

In the lead up to the mall’s opening, the intersection of Alderbridge Way and Garden City Road has been upgraded to include larger, designated left-turn lanes to help move traffic in and around the new mall more efficiently.

f Linda Reid has one motto she lives by, it’s this: “I believe public service is the rent we pay for our time on Earth,” she stated, paraphrasing boxing great Muhammad Ali. “Service is the key to strengthening community and I’m teaching my kids about volunteering and giving back, too.”

Reid, who this year celebrates a quarter century as an MLA, remembers back to 1991 when she was Caucus Chair and there were almost exclusively male washrooms in the legislature “because they hadn’t had women over there.”

It wasn’t easy for a woman in politics in those early days. She was back at work in the Legislature ive days after giving birth to her daughter, who is now 16, and her decision to bring her babies with her to work humanized the Legislature, she said.

“Because I took them most places I had lots of opportunity to be with them as a working mom,” she said.

Like any job, Reid’s quarter century in politics has had highlights and low points. Among her proudest moments were building childcare centres around the province as Minister Responsible for Early Childhood.

For Dave MacDonald, executive director of Pathways Clubhouse in Richmond, it’s Reid’s ability to listen carefully that stands out.

“I’ve known Linda since she irst went into parliament and what I really appreciate is that when I have to go see her, which is rarely, she listens. I truly feel valued that she’s listening to me. When there are issues going on with the organization, she’s action-oriented, provides results and there’s always a follow up.”

Like Semple, MacDonald iterated that Reid considers her representation to be of individuals rather than organizations.

“I can tell that she’s listening to her constituents. She truly is great and we’re very fortunate to have her in our community,” he added.

Reid has a knack for making her constituents feel that their issues are relevant, said Bill Zylmans, a farmer in east Richmond who has known her since the 1970s.

“Over the years, she’s been in politics she’s been a great supporter of agriculture in east Richmond. She never missed a Farmers’ Institute meeting and was always willing to work with us and take our agricultural issues forward, whatever they were.”

Reid aims to serve for a seventh time in a row

.C.’s current, longest-serving MLA is planning to seek another term.

B.C. Liberal MLA and Speaker of the House Linda Reid told the News she would be putting her name forward at a candidates nomination meeting Thursday (Oct. 13) in hopes of running for a seventh consecutive time in next May’s provincial election.

Reid, 57, irst ran in 1991, edging the NDP’s Ron Fontaine by a mere 774 votes to earn a seat in the Legislature in Victoria with the then upstart provincial Liberals.

Since that time, the results on election day in the riding have not been as close, with Reid sweeping to victory on each occasion by a heathy margin.

“It’s phenomenal how quickly the years have gone by,” Reid said. “I was single when I started, a school administrator in Richmond, and had no kids.”

Reid added she felt the school district didn’t have much faith that she would get elected that irst time 25 years ago because they didn’t even bother looking to replace her until after the election.

“It was a tough call on whether to run or not. This was a Social Credit riding for a long time,” she said.

Larry Blashchuk ran for the Socreds in 1991 and ended up in third place with 3,703 votes to Reid’s tally of 6,870.

She added that giving back to her community has been a mainstay her entire life.

She was also a member of the B.C. Youth Parliament.

“I was one of those young keeners, aged 1621, who learned all about the (governmental) process. And I was, in fact, the premier of the parliament in the late 1970s, which was quite a while ago.”

Reid said she’s enjoyed her time as Speaker of the House during her most recent term in the B.C. Legislature, which was highlighted

recently by the Royal visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge — Prince William and his wife Kate and their two children.

“The work has also been spectacular getting know members from both sides of the house,” she said, adding that if she gets the riding nomination and is re-elected, she will put her name forward for the job as Speaker.

As for what she sees as major local issues as the election campaign starts to warm up, Reid said affordable housing and transportation are two at the top of her list.

Reid said she wants to bring some of the $840 million the government recently pledged for housing to her community.

“We have huge needs for mental health housing, affordable housing, and multi-family housing,” she said. “We also don’t have enough disabled units for a city of this size. We’re well over 200,000 people now, and in my view, we need to ramp up and deliver some product.”

On transportation, Reid said she is a big supporter of the proposed bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel.

“I’m all for improved transportation in the corridor,” Reid said. “If someone had a heart attack in the tunnel today, the emergency vehicles would not be able to get to you,” she said. “We outgrew the counter-how lane probably 10 years ago.

“We have to move forward,” she added. “We also live in a seismically-challenged coastline.

And I’m not thinking this is the best place for a tunnel.”

Schools off the chopping block Trustees vow to hold MLAs to their seismic funding pledge

uesday evening, three Richmond schools were spared from closure after the Board of Education voted unanimously to terminate a process that would have potentially seen the doors of McKay, Dixon and Woodward elementary schools shut next year.

Nearly 300 anxious parents and students packed an auditorium at Richmond secondary school to witness the vote that seemed like all but a done deal even before board chair Debbie Tablotney called to order the special meeting.

It was an “easy decision,” said trustee Ken Hamaguchi.

One by one, with validating cheers from the audience, trustees announced they would vote to end the now 15-month long school closures process that has taken up significant resources at the Richmond School District.

The trustees cited, as a reason to end the closure process, a recent letter to the editor of the Richmond News from Liberal MLAs Linda Reid, John Yap and Teresa Wat that claims the provincial government is now going to “ensure all high-risk schools are upgraded or replaced.”

The government has $560 million in its three-year capital plan to put toward seismic upgrade projects in B.C., wrote the MLAs. “The money is available to all high-risk schools and the pace of projects is largely dependent on how quickly and efficiently local school boards map out their priorities and deliver on upgrades,” they wrote.

“We want to ensure our constituents that funding is available for all high-risk schools in B.C., which include those in Richmond.”

keep schools open, as she held up a copy of the Oct. 5 edition of the News, to the delight of parents.

Prior to this, trustees maintained they had been directed to bring the district up to a 95 per cent utilization rate (from 85 per cent) to show the Ministry of Education district facilities were operating efficiently and thus eligible for seismic upgrades.

“When I saw the letter, I was a bit shocked,” said Tablotney, adding that the information in the letter was news to her.

“We interpret it as funding is there for all schools,” Tablotney told the News Thursday.

The minister stated that its usual course of action will remain: “We have always said we are committed to dealing with all highrisk seismic schools left in the province beyond the 155 already complete,” said Bernier.

schools in areas with declining enrolment so a seismically-safe school is the right size,” said Bernier.

Meanwhile, as for the $560 million, it will be spread across the entire province to go toward the 118 schools on a waiting list for seismic upgrades, on a case-by-case basis, which will include assessments of utilization/capacity.

When asked when Richmond schools will be upgraded, the ministry replied: “The target, outside of Vancouver, is to [seismically upgrade] all high-risk schools by 2025.

“There is funding to ensure all high-risk schools are dealt with over that time — whether it is a replacement, an upgrade, or consolidation project.”

Notably, the three schools (partial rebuilds for Tomsett and Ferris and a full rebuild for Steves) the district has submitted for upgrades this year, in its capital plan, will cost upwards of $41 million. Completion dates are set for 2020 or 2021.

The Richmond district’s Director of Facilities and Planning, Clive Mason, said “one can extrapolate” as to the total costs of retrofitting or rebuilding all of the 25 Richmond schools in need of seismic work.

But Mason warned that those costs are likely to be higher. That’s because the seismic studies of each school have only been “rapid assessments,” which tend to be “conservative.”

am so tempted to get out in our gardens and “clean up.”

This is the time of year to rake up nature’s bounty. Leaves contain more minerals than manure giving us a great way to add free organic matter to our gardens. Tree roots bore through top soil and penetrate deep into subsoil taking up valuable mineral nutrients through their roots and storing them in their leaves. So, all those leaves you continue to rake up day after day through the fall season, if left to decay on the soil, would feed healthy nutrients to your plants throughout the winter.

You can use handfuls of scrunched up leaves placed around plants to cover as much soil as possible. My husband and I are

collecting leaves right now and storing them in plastic bags. You can poke holes in the bags to allow worms to get in and add their wonderful worm castings.

You can also make a simple wire or landscape fence cage to store your leaves. It takes longer to make a ‘leaf mould’ — about one year — but it is worth the wait.

It is important not to let mulch pile up under trees and thoroughly weed your gardens before putting down your leaf mulch. The mulch will keep down weeds in your garden until after the frost leaves us in the spring.

Get rid of slug and snail infestations at this time also.

So the clippers have gone away, the leaf mulch is cooking and the birds are snacking on the seed heads of the plants I have left standing!

City’s tips to weather the storm The City of Richmond is offering some tips on how to stay safe as the first series of fall storms are anticipated to hit the Lower Mainland over the weekend.

• Ensure street storm drains or gutters are clear of leaves and other debris. This will help prevent localized flooding.

• If you must travel, give yourself extra time since street lamps and traffic signals may experience outages.

• Driver should slow down and watch for pedestrians in dark, rainy weather. Remember,

wet leaves are slippery and it may take longer to brake to a stop.

• Remember your traffic safety rules: an intersection normally controlled by signal lights during a power outage becomes a four-way stop. Always stop at a darkened intersection and proceed with caution.

• Unexpected power outages may occur.

“There’s good pickings everywhere,” he said. “But what would happen is that I’d visit someone’s home to see what they had advertised online, then they’d take me out to their garage and I’d come out with 15 more items.”

He amassed quite a bit of stock, which included a lot from locals.

“Even in the Steveston area, there’s so much for sale,” he said.

Driving a good part of that has been the real estate market that has seen many long-term residents cash in on their properties and downsize into a new home that has no room for their collectibles.

“People have a lot of things for sale, because it seems like the young people don’t want them,” Kolleth said. “It’s the look.

There’s a lot of talk about mid-century stuff — the wood, the quality of how something is built, the finish and the colour. It’s all pretty appealing.”

And now, since the shop opened in midMay, people are coming to him with their goods, willing to do a deal.

“At the beginning, about 10 per cent of my stock was brought in. Now, it’s 50 to 60 per cent,” he said. “The word is getting out that I’m here.”

And that is good for business as his store adds to the collection of Steveston shops — thrift stores, consignment shops and antique emporiums — that deal in a similar market.

Bon Retour and Daisies Boutique deal in consignment fashions. The Richmond Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store and SOS Reasure Cottage have all manner of goods. The Steveston General Store also stocks antiques and collectibles. And The Fab Pad focuses on mid-century furniture and décor.

“Now we have a few stores of this nature, so it’s no longer customers coming out here for one or two antique stores and some fish and chips,” Kolleth said. “People are coming because they know there a number of places dealing in this kind of stuff. That’s how Main Street (in Vancouver) started with their collection of antique stores.”

According to the B.C. Cranberry Growers’ Association, the 2016 harvest, which is underway now across the Lower Mainland, including Richmond, could be the biggest ever.

Association chair Grant Keefer told CBC Radio One this week he expects B.C. will break the “million-barrel mark,” meaning 100 million pounds of fruit will be harvested. “It is just rolling along right now,” he said. “It’s going to be a lot. We’re having a good crop, I think. Imagine 2,500 tractor trailer trucks lined up … It’s a lot of cranberries.” Last year’s crop came in at around 94 million pounds. Keefer says this year was better than normal for cranberries because of a good combination of weather conditions: the growing season started warm, the summer was mild and rain came at “timely” intervals. Keefer says while some of the cranberries are being sold fresh, most of the harvest will be sold around Christmas time. According to the association’s manager, Mike Wallis, Richmond accounts for 40 per cent of the cranberry growing acreage in B.C. The harvest started in mid-September and is expected to run into early November.

Cranberries to make a splash

R

ichmond’s fields are again awash in cranberries as the harvest of the City’s largest cash crop is in full swing.

Beginning Oct. 17 the water feature at the Richmond Olympic Oval will also turn brilliantly red with more than 30,000 pounds of floating cranberries to celebrate the annual harvest and Richmond’s continued role as North America’s leading producer of the mighty red berry.

The bright red sea of locally grown cranberries is thanks to the City of Richmond and Richmond Olympic Oval’s continued partnership with the Richberry Group and local cranberry growers from the Richmond area.

There are more than 60 cranberry growers

in Richmond that are members of the Ocean Spray co-operative.

In 2015, a record B.C. crop of over 45 million kilograms (100 million pounds) of cranberries was harvested over 822 hectares.

More than 95 per cent of cranberries grown

by B.C. growers are used to make Ocean Spray products, such as juice and Craisins.

Cranberry spectacles have become a common sight in Richmond City Centre. This is third time since 2009 that the Oval’s water feature has been filled with cranberries.

During the 2010 Games, a massive depiction of the Olympic rings, filled with 13 million cranberries, was on display at Brighouse Park.

War survivor works his way from orphanage to university HEDYNG Contributor

This is the first installment of REWIND, a series written by a local teen that features one local senior’s story every other Wednesday.

B

orn in November of 1940 in the town of Bootle, England, near Liverpool, Reg Ogden experienced one of the most devastating events in modern history as a toddler — the Second World War. He lived through the Liverpool Blitz, in which Nazi bombers targeted Bootle’s seaport (it was an important British harbour at the time).

The German blitz was the second heaviest bombing to occur in Britain during the war.

Ogden’s two brothers, his sister, and himself were evacuated and placed in an orphanage 40 miles away from their home. “[The conditions of the orphanages] all depended on who the sister was. If you got a good head sister, life was good. We had two horrible ones,” he explained.

“I didn’t even know that there was such a thing as nice nuns. I thought they were all mean.”

In the face of these harsh circumstances, Ogden’s determination to fulfill his dream set him apart from other children.

“I stayed two years longer in the orphanage so that I could go to university. I shut my mouth and didn’t talk back, because I knew that that was the only chance I had to go.”

Ogden’s hard work paid off in the end, and

he was given a scholarship to study public administration at the University of Manchester.

“Only 1.5 to two per cent [of people] could go to university in those days,” he said.

In the 1960s, the British economy began to decline as unemployment rates rose. While attending school, Ogden did whatever jobs he could find in his free time to earn money for his rent, food, and tuition.

“Every vacation I’d be working somewhere.

I’d hitchhike and ride to work somewhere and earn some money.

“I’d get dishwashing jobs, jobs at the bakery. But I used to have to walk miles and miles just to find one part-time summer job.

“If I worked a week in a bakery, I’d earn £2.50, which is about $4 or $5. I used to go to a country pub in another county, and it would take me two hours to get there.

“I’d make about £5, or $8 bartending on a Saturday afternoon or evening. That was good money.”

Once Ogden graduated, he decided to leave Manchester for Canada in search of a better environment and more stable job opportunities. Yet when he arrived in Toronto in 1964, he felt unsatisfied. “[It was a] big mistake. Grey skies, grey buildings, grey ground, the wind, the cold, the ice,” he recalled. “I just didn’t feel comfortable on the east side.”

Two years later, he moved to Vancouver and instantly realized that it was the right place for him to settle.

“When I came to Vancouver, I was at home right away. It was very British,” he said.

“I came in September. As soon as I left the airport, we drove through UBC and down

“It wasn’t like going to a strange city for me.”

Ogden travelled northwards from Vancouver and did odd jobs until he gathered enough money to return to university and study business administration. Once he completed his courses, he found a stable job as an investment advisor.

“I went into the brokerage business. I became a stockbroker because I didn’t want to be moved around,” he explained.

“If you go into marketing, the bank shifts you around. I wanted to stay in British Columbia.”

From then on, Ogden led a successful career in the business and eventually put down

roots in Richmond Richmond.

In 2003, Ogden wrote Trading, Speculating and Investing in North American Gold and Precious Metal Stocks, a book on trading gold stocks.

Currently, Ogden is working on another book named The Affluent Retiree, which is centred around the issue of earning enough money to be wealthy after retirement.

In spite of all the challenges Ogden faced in his life, he remains optimistic and stays true to his belief that hard work can propel you to greater heights.

“You can work your way out of your situation in most cases,” said Ogden.

He certainly did.

Seafair sweeps Garry Point Park clean with 100th bag E

arly-season workouts took the form of trash collection for young Seafair Minor Hockey Association players, as they took to Garry Point Park for their 7th annual Sweep the Streets event, last Sunday.

About 150 players, parents, coaches and friends of Seafair collected 13 large garbage bags of trash and debris in the park, and its surroundings, bringing their running total to more than 100 bags, over the seven years.

“It was a nice way for our Seafair parents and players to give back to such an amazing community such as Steveston,” said association vice-president Cody Kusch.

The group celebrated their hard work witha pizza lunch.

The 75-acre park is situated at the mouth of the ecologically-sensitive Fraser River.

That was the mentality of Serj Sangara and his fellow volunteer directors at The Dugout Club (TDC), after sensing there may be scores of kids in east Richmond not playing sports due to economic and social barriers.

So, last spring, members of the non-profit TDC — which is motivated to introduce as many local children as possible to baseball — took it upon themselves to found a free, noncompetitive program to attract kids who, for various reasons, wouldn’t normally be playing sports.

And during the 18 weeks the informal baseball program ran out of King George Park in the east Cambie neighbourhood, more than 100 children registered for and took part in TDC’s “Just Play Ball” initiative, until it closed for the season last month.

“We identified east Richmond as a place where not enough kids were involved in sport,” said Sangara, who has lived in Richmond for most of his life, noting that the club is funded purely by donations.

“We felt there might be a lot of kids in that area that were missing out, especially for financial reasons and also, there’s no youth baseball diamond in that area.

“So, we came up with a program that was just once a week, for a couple of hours. It’s very grassroots.”

The program, said Sangara was as raw as the kids who were turning out in their droves to take part.

“There were kids showing up that didn’t even know how to put a (catcher’s) glove on their hand,” said Sangara, adding that the program is primarily aimed at four to 12-year-olds.

“One night, 53 kids showed up, it was incredible. It really showed the need for something like this.

“Some sports are so focused on rep teams, training four times a week. But for some parents, especially single parents, getting their kids out to these practices can be a problem, before we even start talking about paying for it.

“It also attracted kids who don’t want to make a four or five-day commitment (to rep sports).”

do it all over again when the program finished.

“Secondly, there’s no youth baseball diamond out (at King George), it’s all adult softball, so it’s not at all ideal.

“We’ve been asking the City of Richmond to help us, as has Richmond Sports Council and the ERCA (East Richmond Community Association).”

Jim Lamond, Richmond Sports Council chair, spoke of TDC’s “great, free program,” adding that “it can be very expensive for kids to play sports these days; it’s more than $200 just to play soccer as a four-year-old. Thirty years ago, it was free for that age.”

Lamond said he recognizes the worth of the program, given that the east Cambie neighbourhood is known to be a lowincome area of the city.

“We sent a letter (to the city) asking for a youth baseball diamond to be built there and the city has said it will do its best to help,” Lamond told the Richmond News.

City spokesperson Ted Townsend said discussions are ongoing with Sangara and the city is “looking to address his requests while still balancing the needs of multiple users out there; King George is used heavily for adult softball.”

Other fields, in other parts of the city, said Townsend, are not suitable for adult softball, placing the emphasis on the fields at King George. “(Sangara) is looking at exploring options, such as a portable mound,” said Townsend.

Townsend said, although the city can’t totally rule out constructing a youth baseball diamond in the King George area, “it would be difficult to accommodate.”

Mom passed away peacefully on September 26, 2016 in Richmond BC, three weeks short of her 90th birthday. Predeceased by her husband, Wilford and son Scott. She will be deeply missed by her son Wayne (Debby), daughter Cathy (John), five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, family, friends and relatives in England. A loving and caring individual, she will always be in our hearts. A private Celebration of her Life will begin at 2PM on October 29th for family and close friends.

McLEOD, Ruth ruth Mcleod passed away peacefully on october 6, 2016 in richmond General Hospital after a short illness. ruth was born ruth evans in Vancouver B.C. on June 7, 1932. she married Glen Mcleod on september 15, 1956 after meeting at the United Church’s People’s Union Young group. ruth and Glen recently enjoyed a small celebration with their children and grandchildren on their 60th anniversary.

We remember our mom, wife and grandmother as a very social person with a big heart. she had time for everyone. she found joy and friendship in the many groups she belonged to over the years, whether they were through a church, flower club, volunteer organization or her toPs group, which she spoke of often. our apologies if we’ve missed naming the group you knew her through, we couldn’t keep up with them all! ruth continued her father’s love of gardening with large gardens, front and back of our house in “the Monds”. she took up flower arranging in her 40’s, becoming both a Master Gardener and obtaining Master Judge status from the national Council of state Garden clubs. ruth was a certified judge in flower arranging and horticulture and a member of B.C. Floral arts and DUPi garden club in Bellingham. she was also active in steveston salmon Festival flower arranging. ruth was very humble about these achievements and quietly mentored and encouraged others. in the early 70s the family put an addition on the house in the “Monds”. this proved very convenient for the 2 oldest sons as they decided this would be a perfect practice space for their newly formed rock band. Mom (and Dad as well) were very accepting of the noise from the weekly practice and all the fans that came along for the fun. the band returned for one final concert for Mom just before they moved out of the house in 2010. ruth will be missed by her husband, Glen Mcleod, and her children Dan (linda), Dave (Kathy), ron (laura), and Heather (Kevin). she mentioned many times that she was proud that her family all kept in touch and were there for each other. the pride of ruth and Glen’s lives were and are their grandchildren, andrea (alex), Kevin (Jennie), Gregory, Miles, Bradley, steven and samuel. Know that you all brought her so much happiness. there will be no public service. if you would like to honour ruth’s memory, take a walk through a garden and notice the beauty that lives there.
