admit, it’s bizarre that I should feel so uplifted from an evening marked by depression and mental illness. Call me perverse, but such was the case, following the annual Pathways Clubhouse fundraiser Tuesday.

This year, the blow-me-out-of-the-water moment came when a young woman took the podium to read a poem she’d written about depression. It left me wondering what else was left to say.

We don’t usually print poetry in the Richmond News, but sometimes a voice just needs to be heard and this, I believe, is one of them. (See page 4.) It’s the voice, not just of one poet, but that of the many young people struggling with mental illness. And it’s a voice we’d better listen to if we want to curb the terrifying rate of teen suicides and suffering.

While the subject is dark, the telling (as Mashood Kamal also had the courage to do) always brings light. And certainly that light and compassion is what flooded the room and left me moved and inspired.

The poem was followed by an upbeat video presentation put together by Pathway’s youth group that looks at what can be done to stay mentally healthy. ...now here comes the critic. (She can never leave well enough alone.)

As the two young women introduced the video, Chelsea Tang explained that they were very grateful for a donation, which means the group can continue for another year.

Really?

With all we know about the devastating effects of youth mental illness, the importance of early intervention and the healing power of peer support, this group only exists year to year, thanks to a single donor.

“That’s right,” said Dave MacDonald, executive director of Pathways, when I asked him later. “We get no government funding for that program. And, yeah, I’m really angry about that.” (If you know MacDonald…well, he’s not exactly known for his temper.)

And this is why I have a problem with the proliferation of fundraisers in general. And I stress proliferation. I’m happy to buy cookies from the Girl Guides and raffle tickets from a hockey team. But it concerns me so many agencies that provide essential services have to go cap in hand, collecting money because of chronic under-funding.

Yes, people are generous and corporations give plenty for the cause (and name recognition). But fundraising is a fickle business and should, I believe, just be used for the extras.

The gala was a wonderful evening of coming together, sharing stories and celebrating the struggle of being human. But I’d feel better if I knew the money raised wasn’t needed for core services, because it’s also a question of dignity. Availing oneself of services has a very different feel than depending on charity.

But still, everyone says I am okay I try to remember that people want what I have, that I am a part of a nation that others look at with envy.

But no matter how put together I seem on the outside,

We spend all our time together, him and I, and I guess that’s why my friends come by less and less, because when he is around I don’t say much.

He sucks the breath out of my lungs, the thoughts out of my brain, my friends think it is just my mood but I am really going insane.

It’s like he locked an anchor to my big toe, and with each day the struggle to stay afloat becomes infinitely more difficult.

You see, my friends, they don’t understand that while I have 10 fingers and toes, I, am under HIS control.

But everyone says I am okay.

Is okay aching pains through my arms and my legs?

Or a burning throat and wet cheeks, and maybe, I am being dramatic like you say.

As if all girls feel this way.

Some days I feel like a bat in a cave.

While others fear the dark, I exist because of it, and maybe that’s the problem.

But he loves the dark and I do as I am told.

A night is just another night I won’t sleep.

While I lay there restless, he is wide awake yelling tortuous thoughts, consuming my brain.

His voice, a broken record in my mind, like a tune set to endless repeat.

I am in bad dream I cannot escape from.

But everyone says I am okay.

He’s a guest in my room that just won’t leave, he’s the pain in my stomach and the tears on my cheek.

I am in a prison made up of my own skin, A ball and chain surround my brain and day by day I search for the key out.

Day by day the walls of my room shrink, the air gets thinner, and that large glass window becomes darker.

The truth is this room I once occupied alone, I now share.

Now despite what you might think, this isn’t a bothersome older sibling or a relative from out of town, he is an unwanted house guest.

What started as a shadow of a figure, in the corner of my mind has now, taken over the bedroom that is my brain.

My room hasn’t become smaller, he has become larger, he consumes my brain, cramps all corners of my subconscious and the memories which once defined me are now lost.

From a woman’s perspective In the U.S., statistics say that a woman’s life expectancy is now at 79 and rising (I’m sure it varies across the country). In B.C., it is around 85. The statistics also say that 7 of 10 women in the U.S. baby-boomer generation, living in relationships with men who tend to be older, may live 15-20 years as widows.

A recent article in the online publication “Financial Engines” discusses what women should look to with regard to their Estate plans. I would add another aspect to the article.

There is at least a 50% chance, according to Canadian statistics, that the woman will be in a subsequent relationship once widowed. Perhaps the most important issue is income. A related issue is what the woman in the relationship knows about her partner’s assets and income.

When her partner dies, there may or may not be a pension(s) in place. In Canada, the surviving woman will lose her partner’s OAS, and she will get 60% of her partner’s CPP benefit, if the (deceased) partner had one.

So the woman needs to know, at minimum, what her income will be when her partner dies. That requires some knowledge. It may mean putting her foot down, at some point!

I completely disagree that any level of Canadian government should celebrate other countries’ independence days. Of course, people with origins in other countries, can celebrate them if they like.

How would Canadians whose families were killed by Hitler (Holocaust), by Stalin (forced famines and Siberian camps), by Pol Pot in Cambodia, by Mao Zedong, by the Ottoman Empire (Armenian Holocaust), and all thoughtful and informed Canadians view the holding of local ceremonies other than those to remember the victims of these horrible events?

As for the courageous Louis Huang, I salute you for your calling a spade a spade, by pointing out the presence of hundreds of Chinese associations in Canada — not the respected charitable fraternities and benevolent associations we always admired since the early 1900s — that have been cunningly organized and supported by the Chinese Communist government to influence and threaten Chinese-Canadians and Canadian values and security.

Meena Wong, my sympathy to you and my respect for your courageous speaking out against this and similar travesties of common decency and respect.

Dear Editor, Re: “Investigation: Inside one of Richmond’s growing number of illegal hotels and guest houses,” News, Sept. 30.

Thanks to reporter Graeme Wood for his exposé of Richmond’s booming illegal house hotel business.

I laughed when I read city spokesperson Ted Townsend’s comment that action taken is dependent on complaints received.

As 33-year residents of Richmond, my husband and I gave up complaining to city hall many years ago — whether it’s speeding traffic, incessantly barking dogs, dust-choked lanes, open ditches, rats, illegal suites, lack of sidewalks, lack of street trees, lack of benches for the elderly.

Notably, we were threatened twice by homeowners for reporting their illegal activities to the city.

Several house hotels have been operating in the few blocks around our home for at least 15 years. In 2004, we befriended a family immigrating to Canada.

They told us the owner accepted cash payments only for the room they’d booked from their homeland.

In 2010, my husband’s sister from England, planning to visit

here on vacation, easily found and booked a room online before cancelling after we informed her it was in an illegally-run house hotel.

How difficult could it be, then, for an undercover inspector to book a room and show up for a few hours, like the Richmond News reporter?

If city hall pleads lack of funds for additional inspectors, earmark some of the money it must be raking in from the obscene amount of development taking place.

Or, redirect a portion of the millions of annual casino profits.

Or, stop subsidizing the elitist white elephant Richmond Oval at taxpayers’ expense.

Over the years, we have witnessed a steady parade of strangers wheeling suitcases, and too many taxis, to and from homes that are merely houses. In feigning ignorance of this situation for so long, the city’s powers-that-be are complicit in, and consequently responsible for, the decline in neighbourhood cohesiveness all over the city. It isn’t fair to shift onus, not to mention danger from possible retaliation, onto residents for this mess.

I empathize with those who live close to a house acting as an illegal hotel, or an Airbnb, having lived close to one for almost three years.

As appealing as Airbnbs are to vacationers, as the recent deluge of ads would have us believe, these shortterm rentals are not always compatible with residential neighbourhoods. The renters’ enthusiastic vacation spirit spills over to the neighbours and not always in a good way. And I wonder how many of these “businesses” declare their Airbnb income.

The house in question near me was rented out yearround, the owners did not live on the premises, and the noise level varied depending on the group — anywhere from seven or eight screaming kids to a group of guys who know how to party.

Another house, in spite of a “For Sale” sign, has had no shortage of activity and appears to be renting to large groups of young people judging from our observations, as well as the noise level and litter.

My understanding is that there are no regulations and no licensing procedure for these rentals until those recently proposed for the City of Vancouver. One can only hope that other municipalities will follow.

Kudos to some activists and investigative reporters who have shone a spotlight on this issue and forced some government action.

Legal or illegal, ethical or unethical, regulated or unregulated, business has been brisk in our Richmond subdivision.

Such is the sad evolution of our neighbourhoods.

The Maple Residences

oris Daum wasn’t looking for a move to a senior citizen housing complex when her friend suggested she take a look at The Maple Residences in Steveston, Richmond.

“I lived alone in a large townhouse,” she says, “It was a lot of work and expensive to keep up, so I thought about moving to the Maples, put my name down and decided to give it a go for three months.” That was in 2012 when The Maple Residences opened its doors. “I’m still here,” she laughs.

together with a microwave. “I always have the option to stop in my suite and have a bite to eat if I prefer,” says Doris.

For seniors who are nervous about moving into independent housing and worry that they’ll be without friends, Doris has some advice: “Just come out of your room and join in. Everyone is so friendly here and the staff is wonderful.”

n expanded army of “access assistants” at the Rick Hansen Foundation is set to march across Richmond and the Lower Mainland to assess how buildings and community locations fare when it comes to accommodating disabled people.

Mayor Malcolm Brodie welcomed Michelle Stilwell, Minister of Social Development and Social Innovation, to Richmond City Hall on Monday so she could announce $675,000 in funding for the 14 new, temporary assistant positions.

“Our city here in Richmond has long been proud and a champion for accessibility to benefit people of all abilities.

We work very closely with the Richmond Centre for Disability to ensure our building standards and practices are forefront in this regard,” said Brodie.

Stilwell’s ministry said the money will mean more disabled people will be able to survey medium and largesized buildings by applying inclusive design principles for physically disabled people, as well as their own experience.

So, a building with, for instance, no wheelchair ramp is likely to be poorly rated, whereas one with the likes of ramps, elevators, railings, brail and exceptional lighting will be rated positively.

Each new access assistant will do 90 assessments.

The data will be used to identify best practices in inclusive design as part of an accessibility rating and certification program being developed by the provincial government and the foundation, noted the ministry.

The government’s goal is to be the most inclusive province by 2024.

Stilwell, who uses a wheelchair herself, said disabled people still represent a largely “untapped” workforce.

Hansen was unable to attend but released a statement online: “Identifying and removing barriers is critical to enabling people with disabilities to live to their full potential. By making all the places we live, work and play accessible, we are helping to create more inclusive communities. The Rick Hansen Foundation is proud to be able to contribute to the government’s Accessibility 2024 goals,” said Hansen, a Richmond resident.

The announcement was organized by Stilwell’s ministry, according to the City of Richmond.

The Richmond Centre for Disability was not present.

Last month RCD members protested Stilwell’s decision to revoke subsidized bus passes for disabled people (by making them optional, and giving monthly cash in lieu), as well as her ministry’s lack of increases to assistance programs.

ichmond’s police officers are seeing an uptick in mental health-related calls and this has city councillors worried on two fronts: One, residents aren’t getting the real help that they need and, two, the RCMP is increasingly distracted from addressing crime.

“These (police officers) aren’t out there doing what they’re supposed to be doing, which is protecting the public. Instead they’re in the emergency room,” said Coun. Derek Dang, last week at a council meeting.

Police-reported data shows a 27 per cent uptick in such calls in the first reported quarter of 2016, over the same time period last year.

“This is a huge increase,” said Coun. Linda McPhail.

Richmond Mounties responded to 358 calls, from April to June. The year before there were just 283 calls. The per-quarter average for the previous four quarters is 325.

“When you have that type of situation you obviously have police officers acting

like social workers. And that’s kind of untenable because they’re not trained to be social workers,” said Dang.

“I think the police have become shy in bringing this forward because it’s not something that they feel comfortable doing. . . I think it’s putting the community at risk somewhat,” said Dang.

McPhail said Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) has acknowledged mental health calls to the RCMP had increased in Richmond, compared to the rest of the region, and that there has been a growth in demand for mental health and substance abuse services, particularly for complex cases.

Richmond has repeatedly called on the Ministry of Health to fund a community and rehabilitation team (Assertive Community Treatment, or ACT) for residents struggling with mental illness and who may also have substance use addictions.

Dang said without such services, the RCMP continues to be strained.

The RCMP outlines its goals and achievements to council’s community safety committee every quarter. In

September’s report, Supt.

Renny Nesset wrote that April and May were “busy months with numerous attempted suicides and four suicide deaths.”

As a result of police action, three lives were saved.

Reducing mental healthrelated calls is a goal of the RCMP. Part of the solution is to find housing for vulnerable people, Nesset’s report notes.

Council has decided to write another letter to the Ministry and VCH for more support in the mental health field.

Coun. Chak Au said he is growing frustrated with letter writing.

“I don’t want us to write another routine letter to the Ministry expressing the same thing, with the same questions and getting the same answers from the province that, oh, they are already doing something, or they aren’t doing something due to resources,” said Au, a family therapist at VCH. “It’s more than just a mental health issue. It relates to so many other things in the community like poverty, like homelessness and many other things,” said Au.

According to its website, the core purpose of the facility, which is slated to open Nov. 9, is to be a knowledge centre that brings together state-of-the-art resources for research, information, learning, assessment, treatment and support for those with autism across B.C. “If you had a child in Vancouver that’s on the spectrum, if you worked at it you could find all the care that you need. But if you live outside of the 604 (Lower Mainland telephone area code) you would find it a challenge because the service providers are just not there.”

That’s where the centre’s hub and spoke system will come into play by bringing all of the best practices to various outlying communities.

people to get the expertise they need,” Kalmar said.

And that is expected to provide some much-needed help for not only those with autism, but their families, as well.

“You could imagine that this (autism) takes a big toll on families and caregivers,”

Kalmar said, adding statistics show it contributes to a higher divorce rate among married couples. “That’s a reflection of all the stress it puts on parents.”

An added challenging factor is the nature of autism as a lifespan condition.

Estimates show that roughly 69,000 individuals in B.C. are living on the autism spectrum.

“People get diagnosed with it at a relatively early age, then they have to live with it and adjust to the things we all go through in life,” Kalmar said. “And getting those matters coordinated is not trivial either for those living with autism or their families and caregivers.

“These kids don not have a terminal disease,” he added.

“It’s an intellectual disorder, and by and large, a behavioural one, too.”

That’s why the concept for a centre was devised about a decade ago.

“It’s meant to provide much better integration of services and understanding of what is needed as people transition through life,” Kalmar said.

ne of the most unheralded, yet vital, links in a newspaper’s production will get some deserved recognition this week in celebration of 2016 Carrier Appreciation Day on Oct. 8.

“Without their efforts the paper doesn’t truly get out,” said Kristene Murray, the News’ distribution manager.

“We rely on a team of young carriers, as well as some adults, to deliver the paper twice a week. And they do a tremendous job.”

One of those carriers is 14-year-old Liam Forrest, who started delivering papers about two and a half years ago with the Richmond Review, then switched to the News just over a year ago when the Review ceased publishing.

Forrest, a Grade 9 student at McMath secondary, admitted the task can sometimes be hard, when

the 105 or so papers on his route are big and heavy. But the satisfaction of having a job and getting paid for his efforts is rewarding.

“Wednesdays are always the heaviest,” he said. “But the biggest come on Black Friday and Christmas Eve.” The job has also instilled in him a sense of maturity

and discipline.

“There are times when I want to just hang out with my friends, but I have to do my paper route. It’s, like, my job. It’s a chore, something I have to do,” he said. “It’s my responsibility, no one else’s.”

The task has allowed him to get to know other people

“I say hello and I’ve gotten to know a lot of them,” Liam said.

The job has also allowed Liam to start a long-term savings account.

“I only spend a small portion,” he said, adding his older sister, Kelsey, 16, has also become a News carrier.

“She recently got her learner’s (driver’s licence) and wants to buy a car,” Liam said.

Their mother, Linda Stein, said she was delighted when her children got involved delivering the paper.

“I thought it was great. I knew I’d have to help, but it gives them some extra money, responsibility and keeps them busy,” she said.

f you’ve been eyeing that shiny, new washing machine for some time, now might be a good time to change it out.

In October and November, Richmond homeowners could receive a $100 or $200 rebate by replacing old clothes washers with a new, high-efficiency Energy Star model.

The clothes washer rebate program is a joint City of Richmond and BC Hydro initiative. The washers are one of the highest water consumers, second only to toilets, for a typical home.

They use approximately 21 per cent of indoor household water. Switching to a high-efficiency clothes washer can save up to 64,000 litres of water and 256 kWh of electricity per year.

Those eligible for a city/hydro rebate must install a pre-qualified clothes washer within a home located in Richmond (lifetime maximum of one rebate per dwelling).

Qualifying clothes washers can be found online at PowerSmart.ca/Appliances. The washer must be ordered, purchased (either paid in full or with the first portion paid) and installed before Nov. 30.

Within 60 days from the purchase date, a completed rebate application must be submitted to BC Hydro, along with a photocopy of purchase invoices/receipts and before and after photos of the old and new clothes washer in place. Old clothes washers must be taken out of circulation and disposed of appropriately. They can be recycled at the Richmond Recycling Depot, 5555 Lynas Lane.

I never thought of trees as our nursery or cradle, but it does make sense. We are forever indebted to trees.

More recently, I listened to Suzanne Simard’s TED talk “How trees talk to each other.” It was brilliant. Trees are not merely isolated shafts of wood erupting out of the soil, they are part of an underground network linking a whole community of plant life. Everything I read and hear about trees increases my respect and admiration for them. It also increases — vertiginously — my dismay and anger at the people who kill them because they consider them a hindrance.

Richmond has an appalling record in this respect.

The other day I turned on the radio and a broadcaster reported what he described as the “sixth and seventh” homicide of the year — referring to the murder of two humans. That’s paltry compared to the number of healthy, mature trees that are regularly “murdered” and “slaughtered” in Richmond. The total for the last five years surpasses 8,000.

What’s the tally now? When will we hear “This is the nine thousandth arboricide since 2010”?

Arboricide is a powerful word, and no less horrifying than homicide. Nowadays, arboricide is defined as a chemical that kills trees, but properly speaking it refers to the willful destruction of trees. The word comes from the Latin for tree, “arbor,”

and the suffix “-cide,” which derives from the Latin verb “caedere,” to kill. In spite of all the devastation that arboricide wreaks, it doesn’t get the media coverage it deserves, although Richmond is improving in that regard.

The attitude of our neighbours south of the border, especially in Oregon and California, appears to be more enlightened about safeguarding trees.

They are noticeably proactive about preserving their green heritage because they recognize that the importance of trees is incalculable, ranging from the ecological and environmental to the historical, financial, and aesthetic, and even beyond, to the personal — anyone who has experienced the loss of mature trees in their immediate vicinity can testify to the negative impact it has on the comfort levels inside their house.

Trees protect us — it behoves us to do the same for them.

T

here were dozens of people sitting on high stools, drinking coffee and glued to their phones, perhaps studying their travel plans for the 20th time in the last 10 minutes.

Scores of others had stopped, sat down their baggage and dug out their boarding passes, probably scanning and doublechecking their gate times.

Hundreds simply stopped and stared, their attention arrested by the beauty of the now iconic Jade Canoe sculpture on the second floor of YVR’s international terminal building.

There was nothing special about this particular Monday.

Airport staff, pilots and crew were weaving in and out of the thousands of passengers, many of whom had their eyes either filling up with sorrow at leaving or brimming with excitement at jetting off on vacation somewhere around the globe.

It wasn’t a holiday, nor was it on the run-up to — or aftermath of — Christmas or Thanksgiving.

Yet, the terminal was buzzing, with throngs of men, women and children going about their business and adding to the ever-growing footfall at Vancouver International Airport — projected, by the end of this year, to hit around the 21.5 million mark, just 3.5 million shy of the terminal system capacity at YVR, which is expected to be reached and breached by 2020.

As we made our way through security and then strolled into “D-pier” in international departures, the rapid growth was not lost on YVR’s president and CEO Craig Richmond, who was discreetly surveying the faces of his customers, measuring their airport experience as we walked and talked all things YVR 2037 — the latest master plan currently in the works and massaging its way through the public consultation phase.

“Travelling is stressful and we do what we can to take that stress away, with lots of plants, carpets, visuals, public art,” said Richmond, as we paused for a moment and gazed down from above at the hordes of passengers negotiating their path through the customs hall.

“You may notice that there are very few announcements, it’s very deliberate. At some American airports, all you hear are gate announcements and security announcements.

“It’s just noise; we have announcements at the gates only.

Otherwise, it just adds to the stress, it doesn’t penetrate.

“Me telling you not to leave your bag unattended, again and again; you don’t need to hear that.”

For the past 20 years, total passengers at YVR have increased at an average annual growth rate of 2.6 per cent, tempered only by significant global incidents, such as 9/11 and the international recession of 2009.

So it was no surprise to hear — as we ventured through duty-free and further into D-pier, via the moving walkway — there are plans ready and waiting for the international terminal to expand westward, adding four gates, with a view to adding

During a tour of YVR, The News hears how the airport's latest master plan calls for terminal expansion, but stops short of adding a third runway another five down the road.

“Four gates doesn’t sound like a lot, but these are very big aircraft,” said Richmond.

“That’s why walking distances get so long in big international airports, because airplanes are so big.

“Through our walkways, we manage to keep the walking down to 1,000 feet. We do anticipate, as we grow, that more people will have limited mobility, more elderly people, so could have golf cart type transports that look like more like a train.”

Richmond said the airport has been planning the terminal expansions for the past year and half, with the hope of putting a spade in the ground sometime next year and a completion date of around 2021.

“It’s not big on the world scale, not Heathrow, Amsterdam or Atlanta,” Richmond said.

“By the end of this plan, we could be at 35 million passengers; that is still a medium-sized airport, but with extremely good customer service and hopefully with people enjoying it, rather than enduring it.

“Toronto is at 40 million (passengers). When you get to 70, 80 and 90 million, those are the super-hubs.”

Until recently, YVR had been creating master plans with a 40-year projection into the future, before reeling that back to 20 years for the latest blueprint.

A completely new terminal building, independent of the current connected ones, is highly unlikely in Richmond’s tenure and beyond.

“There’s a technological limit, when you get to the end of 20 years, you start to get to the end of what’s knowable,” explained Richmond.

“We looked at 57 terminal designs for this plan and some designs just fell off. What we do look at is, can you transfer passengers easily?

“I personally hate getting into a taxi somewhere else in the world and getting asked ‘what terminal are you going to?’

“Keeping it all in the one terminal is important. We much prefer to do increments, where we can stop and start, offramps if you will, in case the economy falls.

“So instead of a big, new terminal out in the middle there, let’s just add to this one as long as we can.

“Eventually, without being facetious, someone’s granddaughter down the road might say, ‘Ok, it’s time to do what Heathrow has done and put a new terminal out there, because eventually we may run out of terminal space. But we’re talking decades down the line.”

n No 3rd runway — in this generation at least

He did, however, caution against getting too greedy and rolling out everything envisaged in the master plan, which the airport is duty-bound to update every 10 years.

“You could get halfway through it and come across a global recession, so we like to do things incrementally,” said Richmond.

“What if the demand falls off? This way, we can put a hold on the growth or continue, depending on what’s happening.”

And even if the visions in the 2037 plan become reality — and the airport has to cope with the projected 35 million passengers by 2037 — where does it take YVR in terms of the

However, in that time, technological advancements in aircraft has negated, in the near future at least, the need to seriously consider a third runway, something that has, down the years, caused considerable consternation within the local environmental community.

“In the last master plan, we did think, if this growth continues, we’re going to need another runway,” said Richmond.

“What happened was, in that time (last 10 years), the airlines started flying bigger and bigger airplanes, so we’re actually flying more people on fewer aircraft than we did back then; which is totally the sustainable way to go. And they’re much quieter.

“So it’s a huge relief for us that we don’t have to consider building another runway in the next decade or more.

Richmond said the current parallel runway system, with more taxiways planned to make it more efficient, will suffice, at least for the lifespan of the master plan in the works.

“This year, we will have around 21 million passengers; Heathrow has two parallel runways and they’re at 70 million, so they need a new runway, but we’ve got a ways to go,” added Richmond.

Two options for a third runway are included in the 2037 master plan; one to the south and one, a “foreshore” runway, about 10,000 feet to the west, out onto the environmentally-sensitive Sturgeon Banks.

Should the airport ever seriously consider the foreshore option, Richmond said all kinds of environmental impact studies, outside the confines of any master plan, would be triggered.

“It’s something that our grandchildren will likely be working on,” he said, citing how far into the future such an expansion would even be needed.

“It would be a huge, extensive thing to do, so it would take years to study that.

“But if you talk to some people in Richmond, they’ll say ‘yea, put it out there,’ because it means less noise over Richmond.

It would be quite a debate, but I’m pretty sure I will not be part of that debate.”

n Environmental challenges

Heating and cooling what is likely the big-

gest building in the province — and set to expand under the 2037 plan — is no mean feat, let alone doing it in an environmentallyconscious manner.

“It’s absolutely what we think about. We could (heat and cool it) using solar panelled glass; we’re always thinking, ‘how could we build this with recycled materials?’

“In the past, all we would have is a business case, now we also have a sustainability case. What are we doing to positively move our sustainability numbers?

“We’re actually in the final stages of designing a geothermal exchange plant onsite as part of this masterplan.”

Richmond also cited the fact the airport was the first in the world to achieve “Salmon Safe” certification, which is given to businesses that make efforts to deter pollutants from getting into the rivers.

n Transportation will be key factor

With the number of passengers expected to use YVR projected to balloon by more than 50 per cent in the lifespan of the 2037 master plan, getting people to and from Sea Island will undoubtedly be a challenge.

That’s why Richmond is banking on continued improvements to the airport extension of the Canada Line over the next few years to facilitate that burgeoning passenger growth.

“Like anywhere in the Lower Mainland, (transportation is) such a big issue,” he said.

“The previous board members must get praise for spending $300 million on the Canada Line (extension), as we now have almost 20 per cent of the people that come to

the airport, to work or fly, using the Canada Line.

“We want to get that to 30 per cent, so we have to talk to TransLink about adding extra trains and extra cars and looking at the designs of the platforms to drive more people onto the Canada Line; because it has a lot more capacity for us to use.

“We need the entire Lower Mainland to get a plan, but we’re not driving that, we’re consumers, not producers. But it is a huge issue for us, because it’s one — ground access — we don’t really have control over.”

As for extending the Canada Line further along the airport terminus, Richmond said that’s not in their mind.

“We do have room for another station, between the terminal and Sea Island station, if we needed to build the terminal out that

The master plan will be submitted to the Minister of Transport in the fourth quarter of 2017 and should be finalized sometime in 2018.

or the last 18 months, the City of Richmond has been immersed in the formation of the YVR 2037 master plan.

And, for the most part, the two main issues or concerns expressed to the airport surround noise mitigation and the effect any growth would have on transit on or near to Sea Island.

Terry Crowe — the city’s manager of policy planning, who has been liaising with YVR’s master plan team since early 2015 — said it’s vital for the city to be on the same page as the airport and vice versa, given the proximity of one another.

“We’ve been involved in this one right from the get-go; they’re in our backyard, so we don’t want any surprises,” said Crowe.

“We go through the plan to see that our interests are being reflect-

ed. We give them a list of issues or concerns and that’s followed by several meetings and conversations.”

Near the top of that list is how noise affects Richmond residents.

“In the area of No. 3 Road and Sea Island Way (close to the main flight-path in and out of YVR), we do allow (residential development) and we have (in the city’s Official Community Plan) a high standard of noise mitigation,” explained Crowe.

“The buildings have to be de-

signed so that the decibel levels are not exceeded inside the building (from aircraft noise).

“As we get nearer the airport, we only have multi-family development, where it’s easier to incorporate noise mitigation, as opposed to single-family homes.”

In terms of transportation, Crowe said the city has communicated to YVR its desire to see growth at the airport to be airport-related.

“We want them to ensure that

airport-related uses go on Sea Island and be centred on or near to the Canada Line,” said Crowe.

“We want there to be as minimal an impact on transit as possible when there is growth out there.

“The new Canada Post operation is a great example. The plane comes in, the boxes are shipped into the building and into the trucks and off it goes; no trucks or vans buzzing around the roads around the airport.”

n Saturday, Oct. 1, in a hotel room in Seattle, I sprung out of bed at 7 a.m., jumped in the shower, threw on my clothes and was out the door.

According my wife of 12 years, it was a record. I had never been up and ready so fast. In my mind, I was seven-years-old again, and this was the day I was going to meet my hero, Bruce Springsteen, who was in town for a book-signing.

I first came to know of “The Boss” at summer camp. Born in the USA had recently been released and one of the other kids incessantly sang/screamed, “I was b-o-o-o-rn in the U.S.A. b-o-o-o-rn in the U.S.A.” I clearly remember hating them — the song and the kid. I actually got into my very first fist fight because he wouldn’t stop.

Cut to a year later and the song I’m on Fire, off the same album, came out. That was it, I was hooked. I memorized all of the lyrics, and, much like that kid at camp, serenaded all the girls in my Grade 4 class. I’m sure they

loved it.

In 1987, Tunnel of Love came out, an album which deals intimately with the struggles between men and women, about love, loss and the hope there may still be something there.

It’s a moody album — not one you’d think a 10-year-old boy from Richmond would connect with. But, for some reason, I did.

In 1992, Springsteen came to the Pacific Coliseum, and I went to the show with my mom. After about three hours, we thought the show was about to end.

I will never forget when my mom suddenly looked at me and said, “That guy just handed Bruce another guitar.” ...and on went the show.

It wasn’t until 2000 that I would see another Springsteen show. He was playing in Tacoma, and I drove down with my girlfriend at the time. I remember being up in the nosebleeds singing and dancing with a lady who brought one of her kids.

My girlfriend and the lady’s daughter just sat there rolling their eyes. My girlfriend and I broke up shortly after.

Nature's Path 'goes ape'

ith a growing resume of successfully coaching youth in the Lower Mainland, Daryl Ware-Lane believes with the opening of his private soccer academy in Steveston he’ll be taking on a new role — that of a teacher.

“Most people think our job, as coaches, is to coach players to win games, but it’s not. Our job is to coach players to develop their skills, much like a teacher in a school.

It’s to give them the technical tool kit to go out there and succeed with any team,” said Ware-Lane, who is labelled a coach for female youth soccer players in the Girls Elite Regional Excel (REX) and Mountain United FC programs, both in Burnaby.

And so, it was after much reflection of his nine-year Canadian soccer coaching career that the English immigrant decided to open Soccer Labs Skill Centre, a facility on No. 2 Road designed to “give 100 per cent focus to the individual.”

Having opened the 2,000-square-foot facility just three months ago, Ware-Lane has now hosted more than 600 training sessions for youth soccer players — girls and boys — from all over the Lower Mainland.

His new small business is a labour of love, he told the Richmond News, and a product of an idea that took shape roughly two years ago.

“There isn’t anyone, in my eyes, to develop

countable for what I do,” he said.

With so much pressure on winning, he’s noticed many players who come to him have anxiety.

Ware-Lane said he first makes the player comfortable at the lab and then performs a skills assessment. From there, the player will focus on skills such as dribbling, passing and striking.

“I find out everything about the kid. I don’t think any two players can be trained the same way. There’s no one technique where you can say, ‘Here do this.’ But there are some fundamentals, absolutely,” said WareLane.

There is an element of ongoing data assessment to Ware-Lane’s self-designed custom programs, using digital equipment.

For instance, his Quick Feet program works on passing and the vision and awareness required to improve it.

“It’s aimed to hone specific repetitions that eventually become ingrained,” he said.

The program monitors a player’s reaction times and accuracy by having a player kick a ball at different targets in a circle. It can be set up for specific positions on the field.

Ware-Lane also gets down to the nitty-gritty on his small artificial turf field, procured from the now demolished Sports Town, where he once coached and officiated games.

Saving any extra money he could from years of coaching, Ware-Lane took the next step with Soccer Labs, which has allowed him to take his private evening lessons, normally reserved for outdoor fields, to an indoor facility that allows him to track and monitor performance of individual players.

ne of Richmond’s iconic, automobile-dealers will shortly be shifting out of “park” and “driving” off into the sunset.

The building that housed Dennison Chevrolet, a name that has been around since 1968, will be facing the n Ray Dennison wrecking ball at the Richmond Automall in the coming weeks.

But this Saturday, a local animal welfare group that has been caring for the population of abandoned rabbits, and their offspring, at the

automall, will be holding a garage sale at the former car dealer’s site. That’s where Rabbitats was able to set up shop, in Dennison’s old vehicle service centre, for the past few years.

Automall general manager Gail Terry said Ray Dennison, owner of Dennison Chevrolet, was one of the “founding fathers” of the automall, which opened on Oct. 24, 1985.

Terry said that the majority of local car dealers were dotted along No. 3 Road, north of Westminster Hwy., including Dennison Chevrolet, which was located approximately where the Ackroyd Road White Spot restaurant is today.

“Following his return, Dennison gathered together the majority of local auto dealers and sold them on the

concept, which was a hard thing since the nature of their business was based on fierce competition,” Terry said.

“Some still decided to stay along the Minoru Blvd. area, but most made the move.”

Terry said that while the removal of the Dennison Chevrolet dealership building is a bittersweet moment

in local business history — Open Road Toyota is re-developing the site — it also points to a charitable contribution the automall made during the time the site was empty and awaiting a new tenant.

The Rabbitats group operated out of a part of the facility from 2011 to 2014, gathering abandoned bunnies that had populated the automall.

Sorelle Saidman, who heads up Rabbitats, said the

automall’s generosity helped make a huge difference in helping re-home rabbits at sanctuaries where they can live out their lives.

To date, Rabbitats, which now runs out of a new location just up the street from Dennison Chevrolet’s old site, has managed to care for around 300 of the fuzzy little creatures.

On Saturday, Rabbitats’ garage sale at 13100 Smallwood Place runs from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.

ichmond City Baseball Association’s U18 Fall Ball team defeated Ridge Meadows 4-3 to win BC Baseball’s year-end Fall Ball tournament at Latrace field this past weekend.

For the second year in a row RCBA played host to BC Baseball’s U18 year-end Fall Ball Tournament. Nine teams from around the province travelled to Richmond with games being played at Blundell North and Latrace field.

RCBA’s U18 team came out of round robin pool play undefeated claiming victories over Cloverdale Spurs, Kelowna, Tri-Cities and Vancouver Community.

Ridge Meadows came out as the top seed of the other round robin pool play with a 3-1 record.

The final was a tight, closely contested game throughout. The game went to extra innings, which eventually saw Richmond City take the lead 4-3 in the top of the ninth inning.

Outstanding team defense held on, turning a game-ending double play to solidify the win.

The RCBA coaches did an outstanding job managing the player lineup of 18 players through the weekend and making sure all participated in the final game. With RCBA recently having applied to their organizing

body BC Baseball to be promoted to the College Prep level this should help their vision of offering a high performance program and keeping players in Richmond.

uilchena Golf and Country Club’s own Victor Vianzon used home-course advantage to finish third at this week’s 2016 Cleveland Golf/Srixon Canada PGA of BC Club Professional Championship presented by Club Car. Vianzon fired rounds of 71 and 72 on the par-73 layout to finish at threeunder — six strokes back of Point Grey’s Davi Zibrik to earn $1,500. Northview’s Matthew Palsenberg was second (-4), while Tsawwassen Springs’ Murray Poje, who was fresh off playing in the PGA Champions Tour event in Victoria was fourth at one under.

Tuesday’s final round in West Richmond featured difficult playing conditions with winds gusting near 40 kilometres per hour.

This year, the PGA of BC honoured golf legend Dick Munn by awarding the Dick Munn Memorial Trophy to this year’s Champion.

Munn was the consummate professional who mentored dozens of assistant professionals that went on to be head professionals themselves.

“Winning a PGA of BC event is something I’ve always wanted to do,” said

Zibrik. “I’ve been close, I finished second at the PGA of BC Championship last year and I think I finished third at the PGA of BC Assistants. With the trophy now being named after Dick Munn, he was the longtime golf professional at Point Grey, it means a lot to our membership and it means a lot to me.”

Vianzon’s finish caps an impressive competitive season for Quilchena’s professional staff.

Back in late August, assistant Mark Kitts was fifth at the PGA of B.C. Championship at the Olympic View Golf Club in Colwood.

Meanwhile, Richmond native and Simon Fraser University junior Chris Crisologo captured this week’s University of Western Washington Men’s Golf Invitational in Bellingham.

Crisologo shot a fiveunder-par 211 (69-6973) over the three-round competition, including two eagles, which led the field, and 12 birdies. It was good enough to hold off UBC’s Andrew Harrison by a single stroke.

SFU now heads to California for a pair of tournaments to conclude the fall season.

n Richmond resident Shane Bourel in his No.58 Diaso D962 sports racer will be

competing at the Tony Morris Memorial Race Weekend, Oct. 8-9, 2016 at the Mission Raceway Park road course. This is the final race weekend of the 2016 Sports Car Cub of B.C. championship. Bourel currently sits in 1st place in the sports racer championship.
