he first regular reporting gig I had when I started at the Richmond News almost 10 years ago was covering the then Richmond School Board — since renamed the Board of Education…foretelling of school closures?

Who knows.

While the meetings were sometimes long and tedious, I actually loved the job. With two kids attending Westwind elementary at the time, I had a vested interest in seeing how the show was run. And, as a wannabe teacher, it was inspiring to be around people passionate about education.

So, when Graeme Wood, our reporter who has been covering the school closure issue, was sick on a day when a big story was happening at a board meeting, I decided to don the old reporter’s visor and head out.

Okay, not quite true.

First, I tried to pester one of the other two reporters to go — no luck. Then, I muttered at length (and loud enough for the publisher to hear) about having to wear too many hats. Then, I donned the reporter’s visor and headed out for the evening meeting.

Truth be told, I was looking forward to it.

Dishes needed doing, kids needed nagging, but I thought it would be fun to be back in the action — even if I was a little rusty. How rusty? We’re talking forgot-to-bring-a-pen rusty. No kidding.

I got there, had to stand at the door as it was a packed house, pulled out my notebook and realized I was sans that tool of the trade.

Never mind, this is the age of the smart phone. But unfortunately, I’ve only recently graduated from hunt-and-peck to two-thumb texting, so it was a slow and painful process.

(If you read Wednesday’s story, you might have noticed rather a lot of paraphrasing.)

Regardless, I think I got the gist.

For me, that gist was the fact Richmond, not known as a hotbed of political activism, certainly has a fired-up parent group unwilling to negotiate student safety and healthy school communities — nor should they be.

This isn’t to say all schools should stay open, but refusing to do seismic upgrades unless schools are at 95 per cent capacity is ludicrous. The provincial government appears to be back pedalling on that — and even that’s a problem. The whole education system has been jerked around too much already with on-again, off-again funding.

Of course, schools should run efficiently.

And, yes, I’d rather see money spent on teachers and educational assistants than keeping the lights on in a half-empty school.

But, as trustee Donna Sargent said, these cuts are on the heels of more than a decade of cuts. To that end, a provincial election is in the offing. Parents have a voice, this is the time to use it. ...and I promise to keep a pen in my bag to note what’s said.

Massey visions provoke, clash JIMWRIGHT

Looking back, I keep wondering why Mr. Yap didn’t act years earlier to spare us from “irresponsible” thoughts about keeping the tunnel.

He was already an MLA when a 2007 report supposedly indicated “serious concerns the tunnel could shift during the required in-stream excavation and stone columns installation” to enhance the tunnel.

Why “supposedly?” When I checked the 2007 report, it said “low risk of accidental damage” (low, not serious) and offered ways to manage it.

I mentioned that weeks ago in a column that debunked the safety-scare tactics. As I said then, “we need an independent, wide-reaching and fastacting analysis of the safety aspect of the Massey options.”

And the project continues to need a federal environmental assessment by a review panel.

It’s vital for conserving our vibrant Fraser estuary. I mention it now because we’re being distracted from seeking it.

To end on the bright side, let’s be glad our Richmond and Metro leaders are acting with real vision.

Digging deep

or me, the Massey Tunnel Replacement Project problems, such as defiled estuary, misused billions and traffic constipation, multiply and merge like a nightmare interchange.

We can thank Richmond staff and council — and Metro Vancouver, too — for addressing the mega-problem. We can thank the project and MLA John Yap for illustrating it.

The photo of the project’s 3-D model (right) looks south where Steveston Highway meets Highway 99 in 2022, a few billion dollars from now.

Years ago, ahead of its time, the province came up with a much simpler Steveston Interchange redesign than that. I liked it and featured it in an April 2013 “Digging Deep” column. It would have quickly paid off in traffic safety and commuter time saved.

That brings us to Mr. Yap’s precept in this space last week: “To do less than replace the tunnel would shamefully and irresponsibly risk the safety of daily commuters.” He unwittingly implies that Premier Christy Clark is shameful and irresponsible.

How’s that? As late as November 2012, Mr. Yap applauded the premier’s announcement of “the start of work

to twin or increase the capacity of the George Massey Tunnel.” (That’s from his “Constituency Report,” a Shaw TV service to let MLAs showcase themselves.) His comments conveyed that Ms. Clark was not set on removing the tunnel.

Strangely, he didn’t call her irresponsible for that.

Later, he stayed silent when the project’s “Exploring the Options” phase offered four options that are “shameful” by his suspect standards. (All four require seismic upgrades, which he calls “not possible without the risk of damaging the tunnel.”)

Three years ago, the premier announced her choice. To no one’s surprise, it was the fifth option, a big bridge. A few months ago, she began listing safety above congestion as the top reason for the choice, with lots of hype and not much substance.

There is a corollary that states: “When more lanes are added to an existing highway, the more traffic it will attract.” You cannot blacktop your way out of gridlock.

The premier’s vanity bridge will not reduce congestion.

The sole reason this bridge is being built is to allow deep hulled Panama Max colliers and tankers to load American coal and oil at Fraser Surrey Docks that American ports refuse to handle.

The problem; the four present bridges feeding Vancouver and New Westminster are at capacity and allowing more traffic across the south arm will only create a massive traffic jam.

For $3.5 billion, we will move gridlock three kilometres until it meets the next choke point, unless a reciprocal bridge is built across the north arm.

Every major transit project built since 1980 in the Metro Vancouver area has been a political vanity project, designed to cut ribbons in front of at election time and not to improve regional transit.

This has created a disjointed and grossly user-unfriendly transit system, costing the taxpayer three to four times more than it should. TransLink’s $3 billion Broadway subway and Surrey’s $2 billion LRT is more of the same.

What is needed is an independent panel to assess the need of this massive $3.5 billion bridge and future regional transit projects, to see if they are actually needed, or to propose cheaper, equally effective alternatives.

What this all means is that, in the coming years, many families may experience a dramatic fall in incomes. Even if you argue that some seniors have homes that have become valuable, it seems possible that some of those homes will have to be sold to finance the retirements of such Canadians (some forced due to health reasons, presumably).

While some statistics suggest seniors are well off on the whole, we can’t ignore that many Canadian seniors also carry reverse mortgages, which also tells you something about a lack of savings.

Loopholes must close Dear Editor, Speculation and money laundering seem to be two of the main culprits for the skyrocketing prices in the housing market in Metro Vancouver.

Richmond and Vancouver seem to be two of the hardest hit communities.

Recent media coverage and letters to the editor, including the ones to Richmond News, reflect concerns of law-abiding Canadians.

It is about time for both the federal and provincial governments to address these issues in an effective manner.

Some of the recent stories in the media about “students,” “homemakers” and “housewives” with little or no income buying/flipping multi-million dollar homes in Vancouver’s Westside are shocking.

According to the stories circulating in the media, there is a lot of this type of activity going on in our housing market. It has made it extremely difficult for ordinary hard working Canadians to buy a place close to their old neighbourhoods.

It is incumbent upon all levels of government, especially Ottawa, and appropriate agencies like the CRA and Fintrac to go after people who are abusing our hospitality and flouting our laws.

They should not be allowed to take undue advantage of Canada‘s rather lax and lenient approach to foreign investment.

As a matter of fact, it is incumbent upon the government to close any loopholes/gaps that encourage such unsavoury activities.

t’s taken about a year to organize and it will last just under an hour. But showing off B.C.’s capital to a future king of England and his family on Saturday afternoon will be an occasion to remember, said Richmond East MLA Linda Reid.

Reid serves as Speaker of the House in Victoria, and as such, has been responsible for helping roll out the red carpet for Prince William, his wife Kate and their two children, who kick off their eight-day visit to B.C. with a ceremony on the grounds of the provincial Legislature.

Those hoping to get close up with the royals may want to brush up on the protocol involved with addressing them.

Mariel Grant, associate professor in the department of history at the University of Victoria, and a royalty expert, told the News a person being formally introduced to a member of the Royal Family is supposed to wait for that member to speak to him or her, before he/she speaks to the member of the Royal Family.

“The correct form of address when speaking to members of the Royal Family (excluding the Queen) for the first time is Your Royal Highness; from that point forward the correct form of address is Sir or Ma’am,” Grant said via email, adding the correct pronunciation of ma’am is to rhyme it with ham.

In less formal situations, such as the scheduled walkabout at the Legislature, those who are approached should feel free to say hello.

One Richmond businesswoman who has had a brush with the royals is Mary Carter, owner of Mary’s British Home Store in Steveston, which stocks all manner of foods from the old country, as well as china mugs bearing the images of William and Kate.

As a youngster, Carter remembers seeing a royal procession roll through her home city of Birmingham.

“I must have been about five,” said Carter, now 81 and has run her shop in Steveston for 30 years or so. “I remember seeing all of these fabulous coaches.”

While that created quite the stir back then, this most recent visit to B.C. by this current crop of royals has yet to create much excitement in her shop.

Camie Walker, who helps run things for Carter, said that, so far, just a few customers have come through enquiring about the upcoming event in Victoria.

“We’ll see if that changes as the day gets closer,” she said.

'Domestic violence' murder trial opens Keith Fraser

Richmond man allegedly used a cleaver to kill his wife in what the Crown is calling a case of “extreme domestic violence.”

James Jian Hua Wu has pleaded not guilty to the May 4, 2014, second-degree murder of his spouse, Jin Jenna Cheng.

In her opening statement to a jury on Tuesday, prosecutor Shannon Smith said that on the second anniversary of their marriage, Wu used the weapon to inflict injuries to his wife’s head and neck area.

Warning jurors that the evidence would be graphic, Smith quoted a pathologist as saying that there were too many injuries to the victim to count.

“The Crown’s theory is that this is a case of extreme domestic violence, that the accused intentionally killed his wife in anger following what was a difficult and frustrating period in their marriage.”

Smith said she expected that the jury would have no difficulty in finding as a fact that Wu caused the death of his wife.

“We expect that the principal issue you will have to consider is what was the accused’s state of mind. Or, in other words, what was his intent when he caused Jenna’s death.”

To prove the charge of second-degree murder, the Crown must make a case that Wu intentionally committed the crime.

Smith said the first police officers responding to a 911 call found the victim and Wu lying on the floor outside a seventh-floor apartment suite in their home in the 7000 block of Granville Avenue.

She said the accused had blood on his face and his clothing. His hands were covered in blood and had long dark hair stuck to them.

The victim had a large open wound in her neck and injuries to her arm and other areas, and her clothing had blood on it, Smith said.

A cleaver was found by the victim’s head, she

said. A neighbour will testify that at the time of the incident, she heard a knock on the door and saw a young girl and a man holding a knife, Smith said. A woman was hugging the man from behind, she said.

The neighbour took the young girl, who cannot be identified due to a publication ban, into the suite and helped her to call 911, said Smith.

RCMP Const. Mark Denham, the Crown’s first witness, said that he was dispatched to the scene after being told that a male had killed a female.

When he arrived at the apartment hallway, he said he saw blood on the walls and two bodies lying on the floor.

“My initial impression was that they were both dead,” he told the jury.

When he got closer to the bodies, he saw a knife and yelled out the word “knife” three times to other officers nearby.

The man lying on the floor then sat up in a cross-legged position, Denham said.

The officer said he drew his firearm after seeing that there was a wound to the woman’s neck.

Another officer ordered the man to move away from the knife and the man began crawling down the hallway, Denham said.

After observing that the woman was not moving and not breathing and believing that she was dead, Denham turned his attention back to the man.

He said he asked the man his name and then asked him who had attacked the woman.

“He said: ‘I did,’ “ Denham said. He asked the man again who had done it, and the man replied again that he had done it.

“At that point, I told him he was under arrest for murder.”

The Crown is expected to call 16 witness during a trial that is anticipated to run six weeks.

Huge waterfront development seeks city's approval GRAEMEWOOD

A

long-planned major development that will alter the face of Richmond’s middle arm portion of the Fraser River will soon reach a public hearing, as it nears approval from Richmond city council.

According to a report from the City of Richmond’s planning department, Yuanheng Holdings Ltd. is planning to build more than 1.2 million square feet of living and working space, spanning multiple towers in the rapidly-developing Capstan Village area, south of Bridgeport and No. 3 roads.

The development, featuring 850 residential units, promises to bring a new community centre to the area, public access to a small waterfront park along the dyke, 59 affordable housing units and a $7 million contribution for a new Canada Line station — all community amenities negotiated by the City of Richmond for increasing density to the area.

The site will blend into the existing Wall Centre development and a new one-acre park along the dyke will compliment a planned linear waterfront park that will begin further south at Cambie Road. Yuanheng will also contribute $2.6 million for a pier and a viewing deck along the dyke.

Amongst the 47,820 square feet of affordable housing, will be 18, three-bedroom units, which will be rent-controlled by the city in

perpetuity. Rent is currently set at $1,437 a month for a three-bedroom unit for any household earning less than $57,500.

The report indicates the affordable housing units will be clustered, and “may occupy entire tower floors or parts thereof.”

Typically, the city asks that affordable units be dispersed, however, the developer has said it can offer the units more quickly by clustering them.

The development is nearly directly beneath a flight path. As such, it requires aircraft noise reduction measures, such as concrete walls, double-pane windows and air conditioning.

The developer will yield some land to the city for public pathways to access the planned $25 million Canada Line station at Capstan Way. As a result of other surrounding developments that will result in, potentially, 16,000 new residents, the city is planning to operate a new community centre by 2020. Yuanheng is providing 33,400 square-feet of space for the new centre (City Centre Community Centre is 28,000 square-feet by comparison). In 2020, the LEED Gold (energy efficient) centre will service up to 5,250 new residents.

The development requires rezoning and must be approved by council Monday for it to then go to a public hearing.

Yuenheng’s development is among many along No. 3 Road. Also in the approval stage is a seven-tower, 948,000-square-foot project at Alderbridge Way, across from Lansdowne Centre.

ne in four homes in Richmond were sold to foreigners or foreign companies between June 10 and Aug.1, according to new data released by the provincial government.

What’s more, is the monumental collapse in such sales after a 15 per cent tax on said foreigners was introduced on Aug. 2.

In total, 24.7 per cent of residential property transfers (or 310 out of 1,257) involved a foreigner, prior to the 15 per cent tax being levied against those who are not Cana-

dian citizens or permanent residents seeking property in Metro Vancouver. The transactions were worth $334.7 million, of which foreigners contributed $321.9 million.

Richmond ranked at the top of all B.C. municipalities pertaining to foreign purchases, the vast majority of which come from China, according to data.

Minister of Finance Mike de Jong noted more than $850 million in residential property deals involving foreigners were recorded on July 29, the last day to close a deal before the imposition of the tax.

Between July 15 and July 29, Richmond saw a flood of purchases by foreigners —

178 transactions that included $189 million of foreign money.

Since the tax, foreign sales have fallen off a proverbial cliff; in August, Richmond saw just 10 sales, worth $6.4 million, involving foreigners, who spent $3.9 million. The data indicates foreigners were buying fewer, cheaper properties and with less of a share in the sales.

In Metro Vancouver, prior to the tax being introduced, foreigners were involved in 1,974 transactions, or 13.2 per cent of all sales. The sales totalled $2.3 billion, with foreign money accounting for $2.2 billion.

The tax has generated about $2.5 million

for the government since Aug. 2, as a result of $17.1 million worth of foreign money being used to purchase residential real estate. Across the region, just 60 of 6,964, or 0.9 per cent, of transactions involved a foreigner.

Foreign money accounted for 0.3 per cent of total investment In August, whereas it accounted for 15.4 per cent from June 10 to Aug. 1. In Richmond, foreign money accounted for 26.2 per cent of total investments.

Initial data showed 90 per cent of all foreign purchasers in Metro Vancouver were Chinese nationals.

H

e’s only a couple of weeks into the first year of his new life at UBC and already the work is starting to pile up for business student Alon Aminov.

But no matter how much pressure is placed on the 18-yearold McMath valedictorian in his freshman year at UBC, it’s unlikely to faze Aminov, who cannot only deal with adversity, but thrive in the face of it.

If things get a bit rough over the next four or five years, the former high-performance athlete just needs to close his eyes and remember how he survived cancer and, while recovering at home, educated himself, passed Grade 10 exams and got elected as student council vice president.

“When I was first told (about the tumor in his chest), I started to cry,” said Aminov, who, before being diagnosed early in Grade 9 with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, won international medals for his triple-jump exploits.

“I’m not sure if that was because of the tumor or that I might miss my accounting test in school the next day.

“I was hospitalized that same day; this was my first time ever in hospital; I’d never been sick in my life, so it was so unexpected. My mom and dad were devastated; we were all very scared.”

Two days later, Aminov had surgery to remove the tumor and when he came out of the operating theatre, he could barely breathe or speak, due to his diaphragm being affected by the procedure.

“When I was first being treated, I was told I may have to postpone or give up my education,” said Aminov.

“But I wasn’t prepared to give up a whole year. So, a teacher from the district, Ms. Claridge, came to my house and watched over me while I sat my tests.

“I basically self-taught through most of Grade 10; but I had a lot of support from my school and my teachers; I’m very grateful to them of all.

“From home, I decided to run for student council vice president and I campaigned from home, with very few people even knowing about my circumstances. I ended up winning (the election) in May of 2014.”

I

n Grade 7, Aminov, after starting track and field with the Richmond Kajaks, began to excel in the triple jump.

Later, after gold success in the BC Summer Games, he and his fellow athletic star brother travelled to Israel in Grade 9 for an international track meet.

He arrived home with two medals, but also with a mysterious pain in his chest during training.

“The coach told me to take a rest, but I decided to keep going,” Aminov recalled.

“However, the problem got worse and worse and the pain started travelling all over my body. Hospital x-rays didn’t show anything and I was put on a course of antibiotics.

“It got worse again, and my mom ended up taking me to Children’s Hospital. They found a tumor in my chest, between my heart and lungs, the size of a fist.”

A dozen rounds of painful chemotherapy later and, by May of 2014, Aminov was given the all-clear.

“I was really happy and thought, ‘right, let’s get back to normal,’ but that wasn’t going to happen,” he said.

“I would have to make adjustments, as I could barely jog, let alone do high-performance sports; they were gone for good.”

However, in Grade 11 and 12, while still recovering from his treatment, Aminov managed to make the Richmond finals in triple jump again and got first place and also top spot in the Vancouver districts.

“But when I got to provincial level, I had reached my new limit.”

By that time, Aminov’s focus had drifted to academia and applying for university spots.

In his final year at McMath, Aminov also spent a lot of time applying for a scholarship award from Coast Capital Savings, called Youth Get It Education Awards, where recognition is given to students who have “overcome great challenges to find success at school and continue to strive for academic excellence.”

“I received it at my graduation ceremony. I was obviously proud as I’d put a lot of effort into the application,” said Aminov, who won $2,500 from the Coast Capital award towards his education.

H

aving travelled extensively this year and built up quite a tan, Bobby Brar is understandably nervous about a white scalp appearing when her long, black hair disappears this weekend.

Her fear, however, is tempered by the warm reaction the Richmond hairdresser is generating from friends and clients every time someone donates to her cause.

On Saturday evening, on the eve of her 33rd birthday, Brar will have her hair — which stretches halfway down her back — completely shaved off in aid of Wigs for Kids BC, the CIBC Run for the Cure and for the Richmond Hospital Foundation.

However, the fundraising — from the event at Legends Pub on Sept. 24 from 6 p.m. — will be a by-product of Brar’s motivation; to mark the 10th anniversary of her mom, Rajinder, losing her battle with breast cancer.

“Every day I get a little bit more terrified,” Brar said of the prospect of losing a lifetime of hair.

“I’m quite tanned, so I’m worried about my scalp being super white!

“But having all these donations coming in assures me I’m doing right by mom.

“The memory of her kicks in every time I

get a donation, every time someone makes a comment on Facebook and every time someone shares the link online.”

Brar’s brother, Paul, told the Richmond News how his sister shaved their mom’s head during chemotherapy many years ago.

“My mother refused to wear a wig and fought the disease head on,” said Paul.

“She was an incredibly proud and strong woman. People have tried to talk (Bobby) out of it, but she is on a mission to help and inspire others.”

Bobby has also entered a team in next month’s CIBC Run for the Cure.

“I really wanted to do something to mark the date. I’ve been getting lots of donations, close to $3,000 for the Run for the Cure,” she said.

“But I couldn’t have done any of this without Paul, who has been amazing.

“He’s been a huge support; he’s always been by my side. He’s a true friend.”

At Saturday’s fundraiser, Brar will split the proceeds from the ticket sales between the Run for the Cure and the Richmond Hospital Foundation, where there’s an account in her mom’s memory, while auction bids will go to Wigs for Kids.

hey may have come from different beginnings and taken alternate routes to get to where they are today, but the life experiences of a trio of Richmond’s top female executives possess similar threads that weave together the qualities of determination, empathy and passion.

Their collective stories of exploration, setbacks and triumphs as women in the business world will form a backdrop during the Richmond Chamber of Commerce’s Women in Leadership Panel and Luncheon next Thursday (Sept. 27) at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel.

The three — Diana Miles, president and CEO WorkSafeBC, Ratana Stephens, co-CEO of Nature’s Path Foods Inc., and Nicole Steffenelli, founder and CEO of Urban Impact — will also impart their thoughts on what the numbers tell us about the role women play in today’s workforce.

According to Statistics Canada, women have become an increasingly powerful segment, one markedly different from the generations brought up in the 1950s and even the 1960s when the phrase “a woman working in a man’s world” had some traction until traditional male-female roles started to change.

Today, the phrase has become almost archaic. And it’s one that people, such as Miles’ father, who she counts as one of the major influences in her life, helped start to change.

“He was kind of ahead of his time and just believed it didn’t matter if you were male or female, if you turned your mind to it and worked hard, you could probably do whatever you wanted,” said Miles, who became Richmond-headquartered WorkSafeBC’s first female president and CEO in 2014. “When my dad was very young, his mom worked and supported two kids because his father died early, and from that, he became a strong supporter of women in workplaces.

“That was a good thing, because he had three daughters to support,” she laughed, adding her father was also very values-based and believed that you go with the right person for the job, regardless of gender.

His philosophy wasn’t all that common for his generation in the 1950s, but Miles said her father remained true to it.

It’s during that era that Statistics Canada shows that about one-quarter of women aged 25 to 54 participated in the labour market. In contrast, virtually every man in the same age group was participating in the labour market during that period.

But as society began to change, with smaller families and a growing number of service sector jobs, the presence of women in the workplace increased.

From 1953 to 1990, the labour force participation rate for women grew steadily, rising from about 24 per cent in 1953 to 82 per cent in 2014, according to Statistics Canada.

But as the number of working women rose, the same couldn’t be said for the amount they were being paid in comparison to men.

Even today, the Canadian Women’s Foundation states that out of 34 countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Canada had the seventh-highest gender wage gap in 2014.

The foundation also claims that, on average, women who work full-time earn just 72 cents for every dollar earned by men.

It’s a gap that Stephens, who in 1971 along with her husband, Arran, built their business on producing cereals and other foods from organic ingredients, said is starting to narrow, along with the level of jobs women are attaining.

“Definitely. I see it every day. I think societal shift is happening. The bias against women is slowly melting away because there are capable women out there,” she said.

Part of that is owed to Stephens’ belief that women, as a group, are, instinctively, more nurturing than men.

“They are very caring and empathetic, and in business, when you are trying to lead a company it takes compassion, nurturing and caring to succeed.”

It’s a quality Stephens had demonstrated to her as a young child growing up in India where her grandmother insisted she be allowed to follow her dreams.

“My father, when he learned that I wanted to go to university, asked my grandmother why she was sending me there. He asked, ‘Is she going to be a lawyer?’” Stephens said. “Hearing that my grandmother stood up straight and told him, ‘She is going to be what she wants to be.’”

It’s that type of conviction that drove Urban Impact’s CEO to create her recycling business that opened its doors locally in 1989.

Returning from a lengthy backpacking trip to Europe, where Stefenelli discovered recycling was a way of life, she was determined much more could be done in the Lower Mainland to limit what was not only a stream of resources being wasted, but a harmful blight on the environment.

“I don’t think I was viewed as a radical hippie back then, but people were certainly looking at me and wondering what planet I was from,” she said. “I was young, not particularly educated, but very passionate and having people take me seriously in the industry required some effort.”

Another major influence back-stopping her conviction to clean up the environment was Stefenelli’s parents, who came to Canada from Europe (Germany and Austria) in the 1950s.

“My parents arrived with nothing and I grew up in a modest household with the desire to improve and build on what they had started. That’s what drove me through my early business career,” she said. “The philosophy was that no one was going to give me anything. I had to make it by myself.”

While, as an entrepreneur, she didn’t have to try and break through the clichéd “glass ceiling” some women see as an impediment to advancing, Stefenelli said she did have to remain focused on her goals in order to succeed.

“I really don’t see it (glass ceiling), but certainly read about it,” she said. “Urban Impact is extremely committed to putting the right people in the right positions, regardless of age, gender or otherwise.

“If you have the spirit of an entrepreneur, there are really few barriers,” she said. “One of them, of course, is financial. But if you have the passion, the ability to see the opportunity ahead, and are willing to take advice along the way, you have a shot at succeeding.”

That’s the type of advice Stefenelli and her fel-

Top of the list for WorkSafe’s Miles is to be open to take risks “Don’t limit yourself,” she said. “And be willing to do the work, challenge yourself and try different things.

“We all need to stretch and, in some environments, say I’m here for the long-term, I’m a player and will do what I need to in order to be effective and I expect the respect to go with that.”

Being self-limiting can also be a huge problem, not just for women, she added.

“Often, women have been that way. So, don’t do that. Be willing to say, ‘That didn’t work so well, so I am going to try something else.’

“You also need to realize that you come to the table with a tool kit and during your whole life you’re adding to it. Everything you do adds to your experiences.”

Remaining focused is vital said Stephens who recalled how in the early days of Nature’s Path, their pledge to create organic products was not given much currency.

“People laughed it off in the beginning,” she said. “But my husband is very strong and determined. And I learned from that.

“You have to be determined in what you believe in,” she added. “Find out what you love the most in life, what you want to do. You may change your path midway. That’s OK. You will also encounter failures along with your successes. That’s OK, too. But be focused.”

As for how to gauge your progress, Stephens said it’s important to remember that real success is not fast-tracked.

“Success is not an elevator where you press the button and it takes you up. Success is like climbing a ladder,” she said. “Take one step at a time.”

As for impediments getting in the way of an ascent, such as the perception of a glass ceiling, Miles said that while she believes one does exist in some ways, that’s changing. Helping that is the move towards having more women serve on boards.

“I think that is an important shift,” she said.

“Not all businesses are there yet, but fortunately at WorkSafeBC more than 50 per cent of our board members are female. And I just think that provides a different dynamic to the discussion that takes place, because women address problems differently than men. Not necessarily better, but a combined approach, along with men, provides a result that is better.

“I think the fact that women are more than 50 per cent of the workplace in so many occupa-

tions, it’s important to have their voice and experience at the decision-making tables,” Miles said.

“I’d say that most organizations fully understand that and operate that way.

“It’s a far more inclusive business environment we are in now than generations ago.”

Miles added that women, at times, are more collaborative than men and are also more willing to move towards a slower solution, so that they get to hear all of the voices around a table.

“Sometimes, that’s not practical,” she said. “I would say that my style is collaborative. But in the heat of the moment, when we have an issue, everyone gets to voice their view. We’re not going to take days on arriving at a solution, so I need to know everyone’s perspective.”

Students eager to take the lead

A

new generation of young, full of potential female leaders will be in the audience at next Tuesday’s (Sept. 27) Women in Leadership event.

But judging from two the News got a chance to speak with this week, it appears they are already well on their way to being front and centre in their own secondary school-based community.

Carol Wang is a Grade 12 student and vice president of the McMath secondary student council, which is made up by a majority of female students; a total of 17 of the 21 on the executive are females.

“It’s a recent development,” Wang said, adding that, back in the 1990s, the school’s council was made up mostly by males. Things evened off at the turn of the century. And in the last six years or so, the numbers of females has been on a

steady rise.

The reason?

“A lot of the time I think that has to do with how girls are, in general, more willing to participate in school events,” said Dayna Finkelstein, a Grade 11 student who is a member of McMath’s Interact Club, a youth wing of the Rotary Club. Finkelstein said she was keen to be among the 90 or so female students from Richmond’s 10 secondary schools who will be attending the Women in Leadership event.

“I’m interested in feminism and talking about how women should be more involved and empowered in leadership opportuni-

ties,” she said. “And after hearing about this event it made me think there would be a chance where we could all get together and learn how women can step up and advance into higher roles in society.”

than reality.

“I see a lot of women today taking up a lot of the responsibilities. And I think the glass ceiling concept is outdated.”

Finkelstein had a different view.

“I feel like it has changed, somewhat, but we are still living in a patriarchy. It’s not equal yet,” Finkelstein said. “I think that in some ways women are still scared of stepping up and realizing their potential. But I think we are going in the direction where women will step up and speak their minds without being called out, and do what they want to do without their gender being called into question.”

While their viewpoints may vary, both said they were eager to be part of the event, which is hosted by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce.

“I really excited. I don’t really know what to expect since I have never been to a conference like this before,” Finkelstein said.

“But I am interested in what I can learn from the guest speakers.”

“I’m mostly interested in how the panelists can empower us in terms of how we can take on a bigger role for our generation as not just leaders, but specifically as female leaders,” Wang said.

The 2014 Roma Bianco ($12.99) is surprisingly flavourful compared to the many bland Roman wines from years ago.

Expect a golden brilliance in the glass and honeyed floral bouquet wafting to your nose.

And there is a delicious ripe peach and pear flavour with a lovely texture in the mouth ending on a dry note.

Roma is a seductive wine, made from three indigenous varietals, suitable for linguine in clam sauce and other light seafood dishes, pasta, and poultry.

Available at the BCLDB. Moving from Rome to Rioja, I am also impressed with the 2010 Campo Viejo Rioja Reserva ($17.49) , also available at government stores.

If you want high quality for a low price, look to Spanish wines and if you want the best of Spain, Rioja is the region to pick.

It’s distinctive and delicious, made from Spain’s premium grape, Tempranillo.

And the fact that it is now six years old, it is probably at it’s best: Mellow, flavourful, with layers of delicious notes.

There’s a vanilla and dried plum bouquet…

it’s aged in American and French oak which imparts that vanilla component.

The flavour is a mix of strawberries, blackberries, plum leather, with smooth tannins.

Enjoyed with Oka Artisan and Piave cheeses makes the wine’s spiciness and the fruit flavours emerge.

And the wine brings out the creaminess in the Quebec and Italian cheeses.

From Abbotsford comes two whites from the family winery of Garnet and Debbie Etzell. Opened in 2014, Singletree Winery produces a wide range of wines from both Okanagan and Fraser Valley fruit.

Their Singletree 2015 Sauvignon Blanc ($19.05) is a stylish wine and is different in a pleasant way from most wines made from this variety.

Unlike many SB’s which are not wood aged, the Singletree’s French oak barrel fermentation adds a deep straw colour, a lovely toasted hazelnut aroma and flavour, and a firmer texture in the mouth.

I enjoyed its marmalade flavour with its mango and guava finish.

Bone-dry with lots of fruit and nuts, what’s not to like! This would be ideal with halibut or albacore tuna, done medium rare on the barbecue!

The 2015 Singletree Homestead ($17.30) is an off-dry white, blended with four varietals co-fermented in stainless steel: Pinot Gris, Gruner Veltliner (the famous Austrian grape seldom grown in B.C.), as well as Chardonnay and Kerner.

A delicious ripe pear nose and flavour is dominant thanks to the Pinot Gris.

And the other three components adds a refreshing zing, more body, pineapple and mango, and a lovely Kerner fruit finish.

The Homestead makes for a tasty aperitif after you finish mowing the lawn for a final time.

Enjoy with a roast pork or duck, with half a cup of the wine into the pan juices.

team of employees at a Richmondbased multinational medical imaging firm has grown more than 300 pounds of vegetables for the Richmond Food Bank this summer.

McKesson Canada computer technician Jason Kenyon said his Plots to Plates program that he started at nearby King George Park three years ago has expanded to his company’s front door, with the help of his company’s property manager Bentall Kennedy and a $5,000 McKesson grant.

He and his team now till organic soil in four, raised garden beds.

“Having organic produce is not something they always have,” said Kenyon.

As a volunteer with the Richmond Christmas Fund — operated by Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG) — you will be assisting low-income families and individuals during the holiday season.

Those who register with the program receive grocery vouchers, while children also receive toys, books, sports equipment, and gift cards.

The Christmas Fund is supported almost entirely by donations from the community — of cash, toys, and importantly, time.

“Last year, 193 volunteers contributed 3,425 hours to the program,” said Ed Gavsie, president and CEO of RCRG. “Their commitment to the Christmas Fund — to helping their neighbours in need — is incredible. We’re lucky to have a team that’s so enthusiastic, and so generous with their time.”

In 2016, the Christmas Fund is recruiting volunteers to assist in the toy room, during registration, and at gift wrap booths in Richmond Centre and Lansdowne Centre malls.

Positions are also available as volunteer office assistants, who will answer inquiries over the phone and via e-mail, and provide the program with administrative support.

“Christmas Fund volunteer opportunities offer both variety and flexibility,” said Gavsie.

“There are so many ways to get involved, with different positions suitable for different skill sets, age groups, and abilities. Plus, depending on the position, volunteer shifts are available in the morning, afternoon, and evening, on both weekdays and weekends.

If you want to volunteer, we can make it work with your schedule.”

As time approaches late September, you probably wonder, “What are these mooncakes that everyone is stocking up with at Asian supermarkets? Why do people go out and stare at the moon on the night of the celebration as if E.T. was flying over? What are these people celebrating?” Some may wonder, “How can I join in the celebration as one of the privileges of living in a multicultural neighborhood?”

Hold onto your curiosity and let me peel the onion for you!

• Mid-Autumn Festival This is a harvest festival that falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, equivalent to late September to early October of the Gregorian calendar, when the moon is at its fullest and roundest. To ethnic Chinese, a full moon is a symbol of prosperity, happiness and family reunion. Therefore, these three fundamental ideas shape the rituals and activities of the festival, with a focus on family reunions, praying for health, beauty, good fortune and a bright future, and also appreciation of the prosperous season.

• Myth and origins The celebration originally started during the Shang Dynasty in China as farmers worshiped mountain gods and gave thanks for the harvest of crops. As time passed by, people started to worship the moon since it is the symbol of immortality and rejuvenation. There is a well-known myth about the relationship between the Moon Goddess of Immortality, Chang’e — who flew up to live on the moon — and her husband, Hou Yi, a hero by that time. That story has made the Mid-Autumn Festival more mysterious, yet also more fascinating to talk about.

• Celebration The festival is celebrated with many cultural customs, which among them all, the most popular ones would be sharing mooncakes with family and friends on the night of the 15th under the bright moon, floating brightly lit lanterns into the sky, and gathering neighbours to play lantern riddles together.

To enjoy the Mid-Autumn Festival, you could go to the event at Richmond Centre and Richmond Olympic Oval, or even celebrate with your Asian neighbors for a night of traditional food feast. Either way, it’s a traditional holiday that brings joy and happiness to every one of us.

Cathay spreads its wings at YVR

ou’ve heard about drones, those small helicopters that kids, big and small, fly around to take photos and video. And self-driving cars are just starting to make inroads into our everyday lives.

Now, a Richmond battery research and manufacturing firm is helping power a transit bus-sized, unmanned submarine that can, thanks to its hybrid, rechargeable power source, stay on its task for up to six months.

Built by Boeing, known mostly for commercial aircraft products, the 51-foot-long Echo Voyager uses a series of lithium ion batteries made by Corvus Energy Ltd. that are recharged by the sub’s n Allan Grant diesel generator.

“They (Boeing) came to us about five years ago wanting a custom battery pack for their smaller, 18-foot long, Echo Ranger. And as they moved on to other platforms, we produced updated versions,” said Allan Grant, vice president of business development with Corvus Energy.

Cathay Pacific Airways recently announced the addition of three, non-stop flights between Vancouver and Hong Kong, using the new state-of-the-art Airbus 350-900XWB aircraft. Starting at the end of next March the new flights will be added to the airline’s existing twice-daily service, bringing the total of flight to 17 a week.

Lau banned in fraud case

This week, a British Columbia Securities Commission (BCSC) panel permanently banned Tin Chao Alan Lau from B.C.’s capital markets for fraud involving a Richmond-based, non-profit seniors’ centre. In June, the panel found that Lau, a founder and director of the centre, persuaded an elderly volunteer at the facility to invest $50,000 in the seniors’ centre in December 2013. Lau told the investor that his investment would n Alan Lau be used to buy and resell goods to low income seniors. Instead, the panel found that Lau deposited the investor’s money into his own bank account and used it to pay for personal expenses. For his misconduct, the panel has ordered that Lau pay an administrative penalty of $85,000. The panel also ordered that he pay a disgorgement of $37,266, the amount obtained by Lau after repaying $12,734 in interest and principal to the investor. Lau must also resign any position he holds as, and is permanently prohibited from becoming or acting as, a director or officer of an issuer or registrant.

Richmond FC is ahead of the game when it comes to prevention and treatment of concussions.

The youth soccer association, that features nearly 1,400 boys this season, has eliminated heading in games and training for all players ages 10 and under. It has also teamed up with the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health at UBC for a leading edge baseline testing system.

Richmond FC chair Rein Weber admits the removal of heading at the grassroots level serves two purposes — protecting young players and enhancing ball control and skill development.

Research in recent years has shown subconcussive headers, at a very young age, can potentially result in a type of brain injury that falls short of being diagnosed as a concussion. Mini-games will now see play stopped and a free kick rewarded if the ball is lofted too high. Goal and corner kicks must also be played along the ground.

“To protect the player, there just doesn’t need to be heading 10 and under,” said Weber. “This will also help the kids learn to pass and control the ball better. We want their game to develop and learn to play the right way.”

At the same time, Richmond F.C.’s partnership with UBC is giving its players the opportunity to be part of a pilot test that is taking baseline testing to a new and more accurate level thanks to EEG (electroencephalography) scanning.

The project is being overseen by Dr. Naznin Vrji-Babul who says EEG scanning will help significantly in taking the “guessing game” out of brain injuries, especially involving youth.

“What we are trying to do is develop an objective measure, whether if something has actually happened to the brain,” explained Dr. Vrji-Babul.

“Kids want to go back to playing. They don’t want to stay off the field, and, of course, we can’t see (the injury).

“What we are going to do with our measures is actually show them a picture of what the brain looks like before and after the concussion so they can visually be able to see it.

We want kids to understand concussions are serious and it does effect your brain. This will give them that information.”

Richmond FC is picking up the bulk of the cost for the testing with parents only paying $10 for the 30-minute process that also includes a traditional neuropsychological evaluation. Although it’s highly recommended, the procedure is voluntary and roughly 15 percent of the club’s registration is participating.

Should a Richmond FC player sustain a concussion, he will be recommended to go to UBC for testing within 72 hours of the injury, even if he had opted not to go for EEG scanning. Further testing will be scheduled over six months from the initial visit to see how the injury has progressed.

His family physician can also refer him to Dr. Paul Korn, a paediatric emergency medicine expert at B.C. Children’s Hospital, for a detailed diagnosis. It all adds up to the

player safely returning to action. Coaches are also being asked to do their part.

“We have given them some tools to spot assess,” added Weber. “If there is any kind of head contact and the coach is unsure, the player doesn’t go back on the field. We can’t prevent injuries but it’s how we deal with it afterward and support the recovery.”

UBC will also soon be bringing EEG scanning to Seafair Minor Hockey who have put its players through baseline testing for a number of years. Dr. Vrji-Babul’s ultimate goal is eventually getting all sports organizations onboard and create a large data base.

“Most of these kids play so many other sports,” she said. “We really need a data base for all the kids in Richmond. Having the knowledge kids might have concussions from other sports as well would make a big difference.”

He worked for McConnell & Co. and Uncle Ben’s Brewery, before completing his career at riverside towing ltd. in 2006. though earl endured many health issues for several years, he was a man of many talents who loved boating, motorsports, and socializing with friends at home, usually over a beer. earl enjoyed countless road trips across the saskatchewan prairies to visit family, travelling to see relatives in BC’s beautiful interior, and driving California’s Pacific Coast Highway.

He and Margaret took pleasure in several cruises to alaska, the Caribbean and holidays in Hawaii. earl, not known as a dog lover, kindly cared for his neighbour’s Jack russell, Gigi. they shared a close bond and many peanut butter & homemade freezer strawberry jam sandwiches. at his request there will not be a service. in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in earl’s memory to the richmond Hospital Foundation or sPCa. In spite of his brave battle, cancer has taken our beloved Bob. We will miss his quiet strength, ready wit and strong sense of fun.

Bob was born to Anne and Les Webb in Davidson, Sask. Bob’s only sibling was his beloved big brother, Jim. Bob’s love of nature started early with his years as an avid boy birdwatcher. As a high school athlete in Regina, he excelled at basketball, football and curling.

After receiving his Honours Degree in Zoology from UBC, Bob embarked on a career in wildlife biology.

As one of the first biologists with Alberta Fish and Wildlife, Bob developed a love of the land and formed many lifelong friendships.

He was instrumental in developing early wildlife management programs.

Moving with the family to Manitoba, he became Chief of Game and Fur Management.

Bob embarked on the next phase of his career − environmental consulting − in the early 1970s. He founded his own successful company with offices in Richmond and Calgary, mainly conducting environmental impact assessments for the oil and gas industry.

Bob was known to all as a valued family man, friend, biologist, fisherman, hunter, curler, pilgrim, gardener, mentor − all around great guy.

Bob and Orma travelled to many parts of the world, including a Mediterranean cruise last May. Bob was awarded a lifetime membership to the Richmond Curling Club as thanks for his many years devoted to organizing junior curling. He enjoyed mixed and masters curling. During the last few years Bob had great success in "Over 80" bonspiels. He just loved his ’old guys’.

Left with wonderful memories are Orma, his wife of 60 years, daughter Tanis, son Scott, grandson Drew, granddaughter Richelle, loving nieces and nephews, great friends and special neighbours.

Bob felt he had led a fulfilling life. He expressed his wish to have a ’wake’ at the Richmond Curling Club as a ’loving and laughing’ celebration of his life: Thursday, September 29 at 2 p.m. 5540 Hollybridge Way, Richmond, BC
