ven the name denotes wealth.

And with two-bedroom condos selling for well over $1 million, and mega homes popping up on every other corner, it’s hard to think poverty when thinking Richmond.

But poverty is alive and well in this city, to hear Diane Sugars tell it. Sugars, the executive director of Chimo crisis centre, along with a few other tried and true anti-poverty activists, was at city hall Monday night making an impassioned plea for support to help folks who are plummeting through the ever-widening cracks in our social service system.

Sugars was asking the city to follow the example of other municipalities and provide a housing coordinator, someone to help find housing for those in need/crisis.

Years ago, I was at Pathways, a clubhouse for people living with mental health challenges, and asked its executive director, Dave McDonald, what was the single biggest challenge facing his members. Without skipping a beat, he answered housing — and that was when housing was ample compared to now.

We have various agencies in Richmond all doing great work: Pathways supporting those with mental health challenges, Turning Point dealing with people overcoming addiction, Chimo counselling people in crisis (often domestic abuse), the Food Bank providing groceries. However, none of these agencies have either the mandate nor the resources to house people. And, no matter why a person shows up at their door, if that person doesn’t have housing, nothing else can be fixed.

While the mayor and councillors expressed sympathy as Sugars outlined the extent of the crisis, they’re hesitant to act. Housing is a provincial responsibility, they argue. The funds required are significant and beyond the scope of a municipality. Any stop gap measure the city could afford still won’t get to the heart of the problem and may just delay any meaningful solution.

All good points, but what else are we going to do — nothing? Isn’t that visionary.

Sugars points to other municipalities that have taken a leadership in this. Vancouver is leasing city-owned land at extremely affordable rates to agencies to build affordable units. Abbottsford and Maple Ridge both have housing coordinators. Richmond could follow those examples or chart a new course, but the mantra “the province has to be at the table” is gettting tired. Let’s at least set that table. They may show up — there is no underestimating momentum. Even if they don’t, we will have something to offer.

If the will is there (and I suspect this is the bigger problem), of course people can be housed. This isn’t rocket science, but it does require the radical belief that basic housing is a right — a concept that appears to be harder to get our minds around than rocket building.

It is my opinion that the bowling alley should be taken over and managed by the City of Richmond and become part of our community centres.

This sport gives hundreds of seniors, handicapped children and families many hours of fun and exercise.

It gives seniors a chance to get out of the house and socialize with their friends. We don’t need any “River White Homes.”

I have lived in Richmond since 1957, got married, raised my family here and watched Richmond grow up.

After 59 years in Richmond, I have every right to give my opinion and suggestion.

We have an “Oval,” so let’s also have a “Zone.”

The uncontrolled development is not benefitting working families in Richmond, most of those have moved out further to Langley, etc.

At the same time, the city and province are overdosing on the tax and permit dollars that have been flowing in.

What is the government going to feed on when the real estate dollars stop flowing in by the billions?

Are they going to increase our property taxes to support their tax habit?

Even the school board takes in significant revenue from foreign students, who are sometimes occupying seats that should be available to Canadian children.

What about birth tourism at Richmond Hospital?

Should local moms-to-

be, be denied bed access because a paying customer is occupying a muchneeded hospital bed?

How is this in keeping with Canadian values?

Canada is an open, welcoming society, with a compassionate and rewarding heart.

However, do not think for a moment that this means we do not know when we are being taken advantage of.

Our seniors, who largely contributed to the very fabric of Canada, are having to make serious choices between food, medicine and shelter, while some non-residents freely abuse our social services and tax laws.

What happened to the classic immigrant who left their home country to build a better life in Canada, worked hard, raised a family, absorbed Canadian values, contributed to their own culture and to our diverse heritage, and

became a solid citizen?

I ask you, what do we envision as our Canadian future — a well-integrated, lawful society that works hard, pays taxes and gives back to the new country of adoption — or a society that treats Canada as a resource mine, excavating the profits and leaving a skeleton?

Forgot to medicate? Now there’s an app for that According to the South Carolina Post and Courier, the U.S. department of Health and Human Services says that 200,000 American seniors are hospitalized annually, for failing to take prescribed medication.

Also, 125,000 Americans die each year from it, and hospitalization costs are $47 billion annually.

Well now there’s technology to help with the problem, thanks to two South Carolina companies. The Livi medication dispensing system, which apparently looks like a coffee machine, has storage capacity for a 90-day supply of up to 15 different medications. The machine can monitor use, so that if a person misses a dose (or the machine needs to be refilled), a telephone alert is sent to a family member and a caregiver.

It may be ironic that pharmaceutical advances over the past 50 or so years have been significant, but little if anything has been done to deal with the ongoing problem of people not taking these advanced medications.

There is no indication of the cost of this dispensing system, but without question, this kind of technology is long overdue.

Swing and a miss on Utopia Dear Editor, Fifty plus years ago my fellow students and I used to sit around and prognosticate about the future of mankind and the planet we inhabit. In general, our naivety and idealism caused us to predict that by the 21st century we would not only have learned enough from our pervious mistakes, we would finally find a formula for creating a truly peaceful, utopian world.

And our genius at creating new technologies would help us to solve all the problems that overpopulation, economic disparities, and environmental degradation would precipitate.

Well, here we are several generations later and we continue to maim and kill each other, our industriousness and greed and belief in the efficacy of limitless growth is precipitating a degradation of our ecosystem, the gap between the haves and the havenots across the globe is increasing instead of diminishing, and we have long past the point where the Earth can effectively sustain a growing population.

We remain prisoners of our ethnocentric prejudices and cultural biases and steadfastly cling to the need to emphasize the differences between ourselves rather than what we share in common. And although it is easy to point-out the myriad of rewards and benefits we reap from our tecnological innovations, it is not as easy to make a supportable case that these and any new technologies that might emerge in the future will be enough to help us finally solve all the environmental, economic, health-care, energy, food, and social problems that are

increasingly threatening to overwhelm our capacity to deal with them.

Back then we believed that because of our specie’s intelligence, creativity, and innate capacity for problem-solving we would eventually develop strategies for managing the world’s food and energy resources that would serve to benefit every person in the world, not just the most affluent and powerful, and close the gap between the haves and the have-nots.

We really got that one wrong didn’t we. The wealthy continue to get wealthier and more powerful and the number of poverty-stricken, disenfranchised, displaced, homeless, starving people grows with every passing year.

A lot of our other predictions turned out to be wrong, as well, but we did manage to get a few right.

We predicted that because of population growth our cities would grow vertically and that living spaces would decease in size and availability and eventually cost more than an average person would be able to afford.

We believed that the mutually promotive reciprocity between the building of automobiles and the need to provide roads and services to accommodate them would continue to determine the design of our environments and our life styles. And we predicted that the lowest common denominators in popular culture would eventually dominate mass media.

I guess the game of “futurism” is similar to baseball — bat .300. and you’re a star.

A better world on two wheels Dear Editor, Thank you RCMP officers for finding and returning my bicycle!

Last week, I was very sad when we looked into the garage and my dad said, “Where is your

bike?” And I said, “I don’t know.” And then my dad noticed that the lock was cut and I was really sad because my bike had been stolen. It was the best and fastest bike I have ever had.

The RCMP caught a guy with my bike and now I’ve got it back.

The Maple Residences

oris Daum wasn’t looking for a move to a senior citizen housing complex when her friend suggested she take a look at The Maple Residences in Steveston, Richmond.

“I lived alone in a large townhouse,” she says, “It was a lot of work and expensive to keep up, so I thought about moving to the Maples, put my name down and decided to give it a go for three months.” That was in 2012 when The Maple Residences opened its doors. “I’m still here,” she laughs.

together with a microwave. “I always have the option to stop in my suite and have a bite to eat if I prefer,” says Doris.

For seniors who are nervous about moving into independent housing and worry that they’ll be without friends, Doris has some advice: “Just come out of your room and join in. Everyone is so friendly here and the staff is wonderful.”

olice are hunting a trio of masked, hammer-wielding robbers who raided a jewelry store in Aberdeen Centre on Tuesday afternoon.

Shortly before 4 p.m., the suspects — who wore surgical masks, but appeared to be dressed as construction workers — burst into Lukfook Jewelry, on the centre’s second floor, armed with hammers.

According to Richmond RCMP, several display cases were smashed and an undetermined amount of jewelry was taken.

However, during the heist, several of the mall’s security personnel tackled the suspects and one of them managed to disarm a hammer from one of the thieves.

“Original reports had suggested that shots were fired in the robbery. This was not the case,” said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

“It is likely that the sound of jewelry cases being smashed were mistaken for gunshots.

“Officers from our General Investigative Services Unit have been fully engaged and are following up on several leads.”

No injuries were reported but the store staff appeared visibly shaken, according to police.

for the suspects and located the pickup truck, abandoned, in the 9300 block of Capstan Way. The truck was on file as being stolen from Surrey.

Hwang said the officers are currently analyzing surveillance footage in hopes of identifying the suspects.

“The security personnel from the mall were instrumental in challenging the suspects and providing accurate information to us,” added Hwang.

“One, in particular, exhibited an unprecedented level of experience and calm in light of this high risk situation.”

shortage of volunteers is having a profound impact on the fundraising efforts of a children’s charity thrift store in Steveston.

On Wednesday, the SOS Children’s Village store, which opened on Moncton Street almost 25 years ago, had to randomly close its doors for the first time in 15 years.

Store manager Barbara High said the thrift store — which raises funds to help run a permanent family home or “SOS Children’s Village” for children who have lost their parents or can no longer live with them — is struggling to attract a fresh crop of volunteers and is unable to find a new assistant manager.

And High fears that, unless the situation changes soon, the store, which is open seven days a week, will continue to leak much-needed revenue and she’ll be forced to unexpectedly turn the sign to closed more often.

“This has been a problem for the last year or so and has gradually been getting

worse,” said High, who, as well as running the Kerrisdale store, is responsible for volunteer recruitment and carries out public speaking events for the charity.

“The store is still very busy with donations and customers, but our volunteers are starting to age out and we need new people very badly.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen next. I guess there will be more frequent closures.

“It’s resulting in a loss of

revenue, which will only get worse and more closures will mean people will lose faith that we’re going to be open and stop coming.”

High said Wednesday’s closure and any future ones will undoubtedly have a “direct impact on our ability to raise funds,” with the store grossing about $26,000 to $28,000 each month.

“We’ve been trying to find an assistant manager and we’ve spent quite a lot of money on advertising, but

we’re not getting good applicants,” explained High.

“It’s good, charitable work, but I understand it’s not very glamorous.

“We have around 60 volunteers in total. It sounds like a lot, but they’re not all available all of the time and we need four for the morning and four for the afternoon.

I’m totally stretched.”

efore breakfast and before other students had started to arrive, Glyn Davies was given special access to the university gym along with a friend.

The doors were unlocked early as Davies’ dad, Lorne Davies, was the director of athletics at Simon Fraser University (SFU) and had a close connection to his son’s morning gym partner.

Looking back to the “countless hours” spent shooting hoops and lifting weights, Davies said he had no inkling that his courageous gym buddy would turn out to be so famous and an inspiration to millions across Canada and the world.

The friend was Terry Fox. “After his amputation, Terry started to do a lot of training at SFU and my dad used to open up the gym for the two of us early in the morning,” said Davies, 57, now a Grade 6 and 7 teacher at Anderson elementary.

“What’s so cool is that he was just like one of us and very much the common

person with hopes and dreams.

“But the determination he showed when he found out he had cancer was nothing like I’ve ever seen.

“It was the determination an extreme athlete would show. He said, ‘I’ve got to do something.’

“He wasn’t a show-off trying to get attention, that just kind of happened by default.”

Davies said his connection to Fox went back to high school days when their schools competed at basketball.

“I was at Burnaby North and Terry was at Port Coquitlam (now named after Terry),” Davies said.

“We were the captains of our teams and got to know each other pretty well.”

While studying at SFU, Fox got to know Davies’ father very well and Davies senior was always going to see Fox in hospital after his cancer diagnosis and before his subsequent leg amputation.

“My dad, who passed away last year, and Terry were very close,” added Davies.

“When I became a teacher, Terry started to do his run.

“My big concern was that, after Terry died, people, and especially children, would

“My dad met with Pierre Trudeau and they set up the humanitarian award for other Terrys across the country.”

Davies has long been an advocate for the Terry Fox Foundation and a few years ago even flew to Beijing to talk to kids about Fox. Today (Friday), Davies and student leaders at Anderson elementary will be teaching students about Terry Fox’s courage and determination.

Richmond Olympian Evan Dunfee will also be making a special guest appearance to share his experiences as an Olympic ath-

lete and encourage students to pursue their hopes and dreams as he has been doing.

Following Evan’s talk, the students, staff, and parents will go outside for the annual Terry Fox Run. On Sunday, Sept. 18, the annual Terry Fox Run will take place in Richmond at Garry Point Park at 10 a.m., with registration from 9 a.m.

Dunfee will also take part in Sunday’s event, where participants, for a donation to the Terry Fox Foundation, can walk or run the 1K, 2K or 10K routes along the west dyke. For more information, go online to TerryFox.org.

Outside the relatively sparsely attended meeting — hosted by provincial government transportation planners and members of the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) — was Fraser Voices, a small group of protesters.

“Most definitely this project should be completely scrapped, but we’re not opposed to an improved crossing. We think it’s absolutely needed and it’s a priority...We’re for what’s already been announced, which is improved transit through the tunnel, such as rapid bus service out from White Rock, which would immediately assist any congestion...We are in support of light-rail service that would connect the Fraser Valley,” he said.

What residents will get instead, or at least what is nearly guaranteed, is a 10-lane bridge, including two lanes dedicated to buses, and a free-flowing Steveston Highway interchange.

Fraser Voices notes the EAO review does not include federal entities, such as the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Nor does it look at the “cumulative effects” of the new bridge, contends Terborg.

“To say that this bridge is not designed for industrial expansion of the Fraser River and the subsequent dredging of the river . . . and this doesn’t trigger a fisheries review? That is ridiculous. We need a full, federal panel review. We need to look at the big picture,” said Terborg, claiming the bridge “encourages a car culture that will be imposed on future generations.”

Also protesting was Coun. Carol Day and past council candidate Henry Yao. Day said the B.C. Supreme Court has already stated the EAO process, although legal, is “flawed.”

“Do I have confidence in this process? No,” said Day. Kelly Greene, of Richmond Schools United, a group of parents opposed to school closures, said the province’s insistence that a bridge is needed due to seismic safety considerations is hypocritical, considering the government has failed to upgrade unsafe schools.

Inside, at the open house, another tale was told.

Geoff Freer, executive project director, said regional growth of one million residents by 2040 means the bridge needs to be built.

He said the bridge is in line with regional growth and transportation plans, despite Mayor Malcolm Brodie stating otherwise.

Day contends the province hasn’t considered traffic projections if the region added light rail down Highway 99 or added more buses than previously planned.

Concerning another criticism, Freer said the bridge will help reduce greenhouse gas by eliminating idling cars.

Freer said there are no plans to dredge the river deeper.

As for the tunnel’s planned removal (thought to facilitate deeper dredging, as requested by Port of Vancouver), Freer said it needs to be removed for fear that a major earthquake could cause it to protrude from the river, or impact the dyke.

Freer said a bridge was chosen over a new tunnel because it far exceeds seismic standards.

He also said the bridge falls in line with the Transport 2021 strategy, drafted in 1993.

The strategy called on governments to “resist urban sprawl” and “restrain the solo driver by supplying little or no additional capacity for this mode except in areas of rapid growth.”

“On the Massey Tunnel...the counter-flow lane may prove operationally unsatisfactory over an extended period and may require new solutions.”

chair Debbie Tablotney, the online announcement was needed because the closure recommendations are found in the Sep. 19 board meeting agenda, which is routinely published online the Friday before each meeting.

Nowitsky said a 30-minute rally against the closures will be staged Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at MLA John Yap’s office on Bayview Street. She hopes parents from all schools attend.

“It doesn’t matter which schools close because the bottom line is that the province is starving our public education system.

f you (or your family) have expressed concerns about your memory, your physician probably gave you the MMSE (Mini-Mental Status Exam), a screening test for cognitive impairment. One of the questions asked is, “What is the season?”

This can be a more challenging question on the west coast, and it’s not because dementia is any more prevalent. If you look out the window, you may not get any clues.

In spring, summer, winter or fall, we get “all season” weather, and the universal Vancouver day is overcast with a chance of rain, cool but not cold.

But you can tell that summer is over and school has begun; morning traffic is busy again as our children carry their backpacks to school. My two children in university are establishing new daily routines, buying textbooks and writing in fresh notebooks.

Time management is essential to every student. How much time is needed for homework and study, commuting, preparing meals, exercise and sleep? If we don’t carefully allocate our time and track how we spend it,

social media and social activities will take it all away and the essentials are left out.

For those of us who have finished school, this season is an opportunity to look at our lives from a fresh perspective and reallocate our use of time.

But exactly where do you devote your precious time and attention?

Start with the physical essentials of daily life. We need time to plan and prepare for healthy meals and time to actually eat them; time for regular physical activity; and time for adequate sleep. If we don’t schedule the essentials into every day, we’ll never have enough time.

What and who matters most to you?

At the end of life, we are judged and we judge ourselves by how we spent our time, but because of the time-stealers of life, that is rarely an accurate reflection of what really mattered to us.

Attend each day to the people who mean the most to you. To stay connected, we need to talk — not text, snapchat, tweet or post. At your memorial, you won’t be admired for your frequent facebook posts and you won’t be loved by your “likes.”

ichmond Public Library is pleased to host the long standing Food for Thought book club on the second Wednesday of every month from 7 - 8:30 p.m. on the second floor of Community Place at 7700 Minoru Gate. Registration is required.

This particular book club is suitable for adults and older teens.

The Food for Thought Book Club discusses books that are related to living off the land and our relationship with food. In September, participants will be reading and discussing The Jaguar’s Children by John Vaillant and in October the book to be discussed will be The Reason You Walk by Wab Kinew.

New members are always welcome, but space is limited to 12 people, so interested library members should register early.

The library is also hosting renowned children’s book author Kyo Maclear at the Brighouse branch on Saturday Sept. 24 from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. n John Valliant This free event is suitable for children ages five and up. Registration is required.

Program participants will learn about Maclear’s children’s books, and how great books can begin with just a tiny seed of creativity.

Maclear will also read from her latest book, The Wish Tree, and lead children in a craft activity.

“Literacy is one of the foundations of the public library, and having authors come and share their stories is an excellent way to engage kids and families with books” said librarian Kate Adams.

Have fun before you travel You’re PUBLIC OPEN HOUSE I

checked out Steve Hely’s The Wonder Trail: True Stories from Los Angeles to the End of the World for a couple of reasons.

He’s a former staff writer for 30 Rock, which I think is one of the funniest North American sitcoms of all time; Los Angeles is featured quite prominently in the beginning and that is a city I’m visiting this coming fall; I love traveling.

The book boasts (both on the back cover and inside) that it is one for those who love traveling and those who don’t, and I think that’s actually a very fair statement.

It’s a book that reminded me of everything that is both wonderful and terrible when exploring the world — uncomfortable linguistic mishaps, loneliness, shiny new people with interesting stories and overrated and underrated sights.

It also features plenty of history, which Hely presents alongside his anecdotes in short chapters.

You don’t like history?

Skip those brief chapters and they won’t detract from the rest of the book.

Hely is sharply observant, and while some of his yarns ring slightly self-indulgent, I appreciated the colloquial, relatable way he presents them.

This is a very personal book. Hely knows you can read more technically detailed books elsewhere, so his aim seems to be more about giving an idea of a place alongside a story that demonstrates what he did for fun while visiting.

His suggestions for what to do at Machu Picchu, for example, include: “Take stuff in and out of your backpack. Saw a lot of people doing this one. I did it plenty myself…Explore…

Feed an apple to a Ilama.”

If you like your educational information with a side of funny personal essay, this book is for you.

If you like your funny personal essay with a side of educational information, this is also going to be a happy read.

If you want an impartial travel guide with lists of five-star accommodations and local culinary delights, perhaps choose a different book from our travel guide section.

Social service agencies send S.O.S In city of riches, homelessness grows GRAEMEWOOD Staff Reporter

F

ifty-six year-old Michael Novacluse is a Richmondite to his core. If he could have been born in Richmond he would have, but the hospital didn’t exist at the time.

“My dad rushed my mom over the bridge with me falling out,” he quipped.

Novacluse, who graduated from Richmond High, recalls ATV off-roading at Garry Point Park, shooting rodents at the east Richmond dump — which was operated by his father — and racing cars on the township’s rural back streets. He was a young, hard worker, helping his dad since the age of 10, he says. Once he graduated from high school, he carved out a career driving a truck.

Needless to say, he’s seen Richmond turn from a typical blue-collar farming community to a sprawling middle-class suburb and now to a wealthy, bustling city. Wealthy on the outside, at least.

Beneath the shimmering skyline of new apartment buildings being fawned over, by those looking to get their foot in the door of Richmond’s highly speculative real estate market, rests a few remaining alleys and corners where Novacluse now sleeps, after

becoming homeless about three years ago when he was crippled as a result of being hit by a car in two separate incidents.

Despite earning a modest wage, a bad divorce and addiction to alcohol left him with little wiggle room to bounce back when he was unable to work. His $612 monthly disability cheque does next to nothing for his situation, he says. There are now no places to live in Richmond and if there is a vacancy, the average rent is too expensive, at just over $1,000 for a one-bedroom unit, according to various estimates.

Novacluse sleeps in a concrete stairwell, behind three trash bins, in downtown Richmond. His wheelchair was recently stolen.

“It takes me an hour to get dressed,” he said.

Chimo Community Services outreach worker Hugh Freiberg says efforts to find Novacluse a place to live that’s wheelchair accessible have come up short.

“It’s bad. This is really bad,” said Freiberg.

On Monday, Novacluse mustered up the courage to wheel himself into city council chambers with a host of local social service agencies or groups demanding councillors back their plan for a municipal housing coordinator and more money and support from all levels of government.

able rent,” said Novacluse.

An exchange between Diane Sugars, executive director of Chimo, De Whalen, co-chair of the Richmond Poverty Response Committee, and some members of council highlighted the financial and political roadblocks the various agencies are facing.

At the core of Sugars’ argument is the fact several agencies are being forced into the role of housing provider, instead of focusing on

their core functions.

“We are not a housing provider. We provide a crisis line and we deal with domestic violence. And yet this has fallen on our lap,” Sugars told council.

“In the past few weeks it has become overwhelming. It is common for us to hear from families that their (rental) house has been See Housing page 21

Notably, Chimo set up a program to house people in homes slated for demolition. The program is successful, Sugars says, but it has led to other agencies pointing destitute people to them. Chimo staff are burned out.

“There’s nobody here who has a central mandate to build and purchase affordable housing for people. It doesn’t exist,” said Sugars, noting other regional municipalities have actively advocated for and helped fund such non-profit resources.

“The problem keeps flooding in,” she said.

Richmond’s vacancy rate is 0.3 per cent.

By several accounts, agencies appear to be in a tail spin, scrambling to help those in severe poverty. Richmond has no shelter for homeless women and its only shelter for men, run by the Salvation Army, needs to find a new location, as its house has been sold to a developer. St. Alban Anglican Church had to shut down the city’s only drop-in centre for homeless people after staff and volunteers became inundated with demand while falling short of funds.

Church volunteer Dianne Woodhouse has asked the city to provide a city-owned place to hand out lunches — in light of the drop-in centre closure — while Turning Point Recovery Society finds a place to set up a new one, with a $300,000 grant (total, for thee years) from the provincial government.

Those efforts have failed, said Woodhouse, who asked to use Brighouse Pavillion concession stand each Friday at noon.

Woodhouse said the church was told the concession was booked, although on most days it doesn’t appear that way, she noted.

Meanwhile, council has been cautious to spend more money on social causes for fear of provincial “downloading” of housing responsibilities.

“I’m fully sympathetic to what you are saying, but what about the province? How much have you spoken to the province on these issues?” Mayor Malcolm Brodie asked Sugars, who replied that she and others have outlined their problems to local MLAs (Richmond Centre MLA Teresa Wat was unavailable for comment).

Sugars said MLA Linda Reid was a “friend of Chimo.”

In addition to efforts to lobby MLAs, Sugars is asking the city for moral support, as well as money for a housing coordinator.

“I’m not taking away anything from what we plan to do. But in a sense, aren’t we letting the province off the hook and abdicate the responsibility yet again?” asked Brodie.

“Let’s not let the province off the hook, but come together as a group and stronger voice and say, ‘This has to stop,’” Sugars responded.

“We aren’t being good neighbours when we’re sending people elsewhere,” she said.

Excluding “couch surfers,” Freiberg, who works the city’s streets handing out whatever he can, estimates there are 130 known homeless people in Richmond, who find their way into bushes and under bridges, or even Coun. Harold Steves’ backyard.

One person recently offered Steves $300 to camp out.

“I wish I could have helped but, as a councillor, I can’t. I did tell him where he could go and no one would find him,” said Steves.

Coun. Chak Au has long advocated for increases to municipal grants for social service agencies.

“I understand we can’t do the work of the province, but maybe we can help temporarily,” Au told the Richmond News.

On Monday, Coun. Carol Day suggested the agencies stage protests, going so far as to suggest having homeless people show up at the hospital en masse.

“We need a way to ‘upload’ the problem to the province,” said Day. Meanwhile, Whalen said there are rumours that a tent city could be erected on city hall grounds to generate attention.

Last year, council did effectively increase such grants, but about $550,000 of new money from casino revenues presently sits in

a reserve account as the city irons out new allocation procedures (which it said would be done in the first quarter of 2016).

In February 2015, only Day and Au voted to sidestep the grants policy to give St.Alban an extra $10,000.

Coun. Alexa Loo considers a tent city protest counterproductive but has repeatedly suggested providing land for agencies. She said there may be some “sticker shock” up front, but overall savings to taxpayers will be had in the community if the hospital sees fewer visits from homeless and/or drug addicted residents.

“I think partnering with the right levels of government by providing land is something we should look at. That’s how other municipalities are doing it,” said Loo. Brodie suggested it may be harder than it looks to find and finance the land. On Monday, council deferred the requests to city staff.

Sugars said land is vital, if not just for a drop-in centre.

“If I hear one more time someone say, ‘There’s no housing,’ you can’t say that. You have to create it. Vancouver is creating it,” said Sugars.

That’s because the presently underconstruction Storeys is already spoken for, she said, and Sugars added that without new spaces, it could fall into ruin over the course of years, especially if the agencies don’t have adequate funding.

s autumn rapidly approaches, it’s time to think of beverages that begin with a fall, such as apples, and the fermented outcome: cider.

And a wonderful place to enjoy the apple orchard and taste a wide variety of apple cider is Merridale Estate Cidery in the Cowichan Valley. Just south of Duncan on Vancouver Island, Merridale is located in a large apple orchard in the gorgeous rolling hills near Cobble Hill.

In June, I enjoyed a tasty Moroccan chicken salad at the Merridale Bistro while overlooking the gorgeous apple trees and sipped a couple of ciders.

Then I went to the tasting bar and undertook an old cider tasting under the expert guidance of Merridale’s Matt Higgins.

We began with the House Cider, which is their pub draft version. It’s a pale-dry cider, light in flavour and body with a semi sweet finish. Like sessional ale, the House Cider isn’t overpowering, so you can enjoy a few glasses of it at one session.

The best way to capture that beauty and power that comes and goes with nature is through the eyes of a camera.

Photography helps you preserve the beauty that you love and share it with your friends and family.

You can take some stunning photographs of your garden by understanding some basic fundamentals of photography. It is not all about the garden, but more about the light. The word “photography” actually means “writing with light.”

Finding the best light to show off your garden is the key to making the best pictures!

It is very important to look very carefully through the viewfinder before shooting your picture. Learn to see what your camera sees.

Look for what the camera sees, not what you want to see.

While looking through your viewfinder, consciously look for what you don’t want in the picture. Are there tree branches growing out of people’s heads or a telephone wire in the top of the frame?

Some simple ways to overcome composition problems is to tilt your camera up or down, step to the right or left, or lower your point of view to remove any unwanted elements. Once you made your adjustments, examine your frame again, from edge to edge and corner to corner. With today’s technology, we have the ability to edit and crop our photos after the fact. Use this only as your last resort.

Investing in a tripod is an excellent way to steady your camera for a long exposure or to help you to capture the photo that requires a steady hand — photographing birds and insects amongst your flowers, for example.

This Sunday, to help celebrate Farmers Appreciation Week there will be a host of activities in the Kids’ Zone on the community centre grounds that will include photo opportunities and colouring.

The market runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine. Parking is available at the Steveston Community Centre parking lot at 4111 Moncton Street.

Audi's latest A4 better in almost every way DAVIDCHAO

n While exterior stylistic changes on Audi’s new A4 line have been minimal, designers have packed plenty of cutting edge technology into the German carmaker’s best-selling model that will challenge its competitors in terms of ride quality.

hile it may not be obvious at first glance, Audi’s most popular sedan — the A4 — is all-new for 2017.

Packed with cutting-edge and class-exclusive technology, the new Audi A4 is more than just a worthy competitor in the luxury sedan market.

Rivals such as the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz CClass and Jaguar XE should feel nervous about the improved Audi.

Despite being all-new, the 2017 A4 looks quite similar to the previous generation.

Put it another way, the styling took a “risk-aversive” approach — but what’s really important is what it has underneath: advanced hightech options, a more powerful engine, and many other innovations that will make it a contender for best-in-class.

n Design

The 2017 Audi A4 is built on the Volkswagen Group’s new, large car platform. It shares this architecture with the Audi Q7 and the new, ultra-luxurious Bentley SUV, the Bentayga.

The result of using this new structure is that it can offer more space inside the cabin.

Wheelbase is a little longer, creating more rear seat legroom and headroom; the A4 isn’t any taller but the new body design allows the rear seats to be mounted lower. It is also slightly wider, improving the rear seat shoulder room and allowing the A4 to accommodate three adults more comfortably.

It is fair to say the exterior design is a little unadventurous, as it’s certainly evolutionary rather than revolutionary. However, upon closer inspection, it’s apparent no detail was left unchanged.

Overall, the character lines are sharper and more angular. The accent along the side boldly runs the entire length of the A4 and the grille and headlights are more defined.

not purely cosmetic either.

Audi claims the A4 is the most aerodynamic in this class, which helps with efficiency and cuts down wind noise.

By moving the side mirrors a few inches rearward and mounting them lower, the new design allows the air to pass smoothly along the side of the car and not make any whistling sounds that may hamper competitors’ cars.

While all these details may seem small when taken individually, they all add up to make a big difference and set the Audi A4 apart.

n Performance

The first thing you notice when you start driving the new Audi A4 is how calm and composed it is. While the old A4 didn’t deal with road imperfections the best, this new one is much better and smoother.

In standard trim, the suspension strikes an excellent balance between comfort and sport. Audi’s drive mode select allows the driver to customize the ride further.

If you want the best system, however, the adaptive damping suspension is highly recommended. This system makes the A4 glide over bumps. The shock valves are controlled electronically in accordance with road conditions, driver control inputs, and the Audi drive select setting.

If spirited, sporty driving is more your style, the new A4 is also better in this regard.

Steering feel is sharper and more precise, and while some of its rear-wheel drive rivals may be more thrilling, the Audi A4 has butterysmooth feel.

There’s only one engine option for the 2017 A4, but it is great one. The 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-4 produces 252 hp and 272 lb-ft of torque making it capable of accelerating to 100 km/h in just 6.0 seconds.

The only complain I have is that the test unit came with Hankook tires (a somewhat unknown Korean brand) that were noisier and somewhat bouncier in comparison to the more prestigious Pirelli, Michelin, and Continental tires.

n Interior

The inside of the Audi A4 is stylish and loaded with futuristic technology. The dash has been simplified and the main controls are all easy to use.

Starting with the basics, the front seats are highly comfortable and material quality is first-rate. As mentioned, the larger exterior dimensions improves rear seat comfort and the A4 is now possibly the best in this class in this area.

Trunk space is also very good, and the wide opening and low floor height make it easy to load and unload. Audi didn’t forget about in-car storage either, as there are many convenient options throughout the cabin to place your everyday items.

In the new A4, the centre display screen has been moved higher up on the dash and the rotary controller is now in front of the shifter.

The infotainment system has been improved as entering commands is a breeze and the processor is very quick. Surprisingly, the “start engine” button is a bit of stretch in terms of its location — at least for me.

Standard on the A4 is an analog gauge cluster separated by a screen that displays the basic info a driver needs to know. However, if you want to take a massive leap into the future, you can upgrade to Audi’s impressive virtual cockpit.

This system makes all the gauges digital and the instrument panel fully customizable. One example of what is possible is the ability to minimize the gauges and allow Google Maps

— complete with satellite view — to take over the entire display.

Not only is the new Audi A4 highly comfortable, the available tech makes every drive an exciting experience.

Olympic Oval to host Chinese hockey team T

he Chinese women’s national team is coming to the Richmond Olympic Oval next month for training and to participate in the CanadaChina Women’s Ice Hockey Tournament.

The trip to B.C. (Oct. 15-25) is part of the process building up to the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, with the final roster expected to be selected from the current training group. The tournament is the key component of the Second Canada-China Sports Exchange.

The Canada China Sports Foundation (CCSF) are co-hosting the four-team event, along with the Griffiths Hockey Club. The final game and closing ceremonies are slated for the Olympic Oval.

“This is the second year that CCSF is hosting a Canada-China Sports Exchange,” explained CCSF secretary general Wu Zili. “Last year’s ‘Beijing Meets Vancouver: Olympic Cities Forum’ gave the two Olympic host cities an opportunity to exchange their experience, knowledge and expertise. “(This time) we will provide the Chinese women’s team an opportunity to play tournament games and get training in Canada, the top ice-hockey nation in the world. This is of tremendous help for Chinese players to improve their skills and

tactics, and better prepare them for the Olympics. This is what Harmony through Hockey, Hand in Hand for Olympic Dreams really means.”

The Griffiths Hockey Club is cofounded by B.C. Hockey Hall of Fame and B.C. Sports Hall of Fame inductee Arthur Griffiths.

Club president Victor Tsao pointed out that, as a top hockey nation, Canada can offer the most complete training methods and facilities, and, more importantly, provide the best development strategies and experience to help promote the game.

Club advisors, Griffiths and former Vancouver Canucks star Cliff Ronning, attended last week’s press conference at the Oval and welcomed the Chinese team. They promised to provide the best possible living, training and tournament experience for the players, in order to maximize their gain in skills and tactics.

The tournament will also feature three other teams — UBC Thunderbirds, provincial champion South Fraser TNT and the Pacific Steelers.

As a non-profit organization with the mandate to promote social welfare and charity through the medium of sports, the CCSF will donate revenues from tournament tickets and sponsorship to the Pacific Autism Family Centre in Richmond.

Sin captures Maple Leaf Mini Tour event Richmond golfers were prominent when the Maple Leaf Tour’s Mini Tour held its season-ending National Championship at the Tsawwassen Springs Golf Course.

Impressive scores of 71-70 (141) off the blue tees awarded Freddy Sin, 12, the MJT Peewee Boys Mini Tour National Champion’s trophy.

“I worked very hard after I got back from the World Championships. The MJT is a great tour and it has great contestants – I feel pretty good about my win,” said Sin. He finished a comfortable eight strokes ahead of runner-up Ethan Posthumus of Coquitlam (75-74).

Meanwhile, Daniel Xu finished second in the Atom Boys Championship for 10-year-olds thanks to

rounds of 71-69. He was just behind winner Justin Bjornson of Surrey.

In the girls Pee Wee Championship, it was another podium finish for a Richmond golfer as Tina Jiang fired rounds of 83-85 to earn runner-up honours. First place went to Lauren Kim of Surrey (77-84).

A junior golf clinic, sponsored by Cam Clark Ford Richmond, ran concurrently with the tournament, introducing golf to over 50 kids in the community for free.

CLAPHAM, Michael Michael Clapham, 77, died in richmond B.C. on september 4, 2016. Born in london, england on october 14, 1938, Mike was a boy during the war. at age 18 he won a soccer pool and traded his winnings for a one-way ticket to Canada. Mike’s friends, parents and older sister remained in england.

GRISE (Grisenthwaite), Terry Lynn April 23, 1955 − September 11, 2016

Terry passed away peacefully at home in Richmond at the age of 61 after courageously fighting Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) for several years. She leaves behind her loving husband of 16 years, Lorne Carney, stepson Kevin, her parents Bob and Doreen Grisenthwaite along with her sisters Debra Weber (Mike) and Lynda Wallace, nephews Ryan Weber (Charlotte) and Tyler Wallace, and great nephew Emil Weber. She is also remembered by her many good friends.

Terry accomplished a great deal in her life. She was caring and generous, and had a great sense of humour. At times, she could be quite opinionated and was passionate about her beliefs. All her life she demonstrated a high level of determination.

Terry was born in Vancouver and grew up always knowing she wanted to be a veterinarian. She had a happy, active childhood enjoying many activities.

Her family moved to Victoria when she was 14 and there she spent a lot of her spare time riding and looking after horses at the local stables. After graduating from Mount Douglas High School she attended UBC and then went on to the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon to earn her doctorate. Terry pursued her veterinary career in St John’s, Newfoundland and North Vancouver before establishing Companion Animal Clinic in Richmond where, for more than 20 years, she dedicated herself to providing a high−level of care to animals along with showing compassion and kindness to their owners. Terry loved her work and was very committed to her profession. It was during this time that she met her future husband Lorne when he brought his basset hound, Astro to her clinic.

Terry had a variety of interests including horseback riding, skiing, swimming, scuba−diving, hiking, ball− room dancing, toastmasters, tole−painting, traveling and music − both singing, and playing a piano keyboard. She also loved to quilt and made a number of beautiful items enjoyed by her family.

Terry and Lorne annually traveled to Mexico for many years along with memorable trips to Europe.

Terry had many pets during her lifetime and provided a wonderful home for them. She often walked her dogs in South Arm Park or along the Fraser River. She loved her home and garden and spent many hours in recent years resting by the window or lying on a lounge chair enjoying the flowers and watching her cats play together.

Illness prevented Terry from participating in many activities in her later years and she missed not being able to visit with family and friends very often.

She would read when she could, listen to music, and even taught herself to play the ukulele while resting on her bed. Lorne took good care of her and his love and companionship made quite a difference to her day to day life while she was ill.

As we say goodbye to Terry we are comforted knowing she is at peace. We will deeply miss her presence in our lives and will always hold her close in our hearts.

He is also survived by his dear friend Phyl rogers alongside her children and their families. in retirement, Mike shared his enthusiasm for West Ham United, painting, cartooning and jazz. He was a member of several ensembles, including the avis rae trio, and was an energetic and inquisitive part of richmond’s apple Greene community. a celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. saturday, september 24th in the apple Greene Core.

Paul passed away on September 4 from cancer.

Paul was born in Winnipeg, MB on October 16, 1941 − a Lake Winnipeg Icelander from Hecla. His family moved to Steveston in 1943 and Paul lived there for most of his life. At 12 years old, Paul went fishing for the first time on the Quesnel Lake with Harry Moon and he ended his 48 year career as Chief Engineer on the Seaspan tug, the Comox Crown. Over the years, Paul entertained many with his colourful stories of old Steveston and his shop door was always open to help out friend, family and neighbours. Paul was predeceased by his father, Sigurgeir (Geiri), his mother Victoria, his sisters Victoria and Diana, and his brother Bill. He is survived by his wife, Airi, his sons Karl and Helgi, his daughter Mandy (Chris), his sister Elin (Ross) and his brother Darwin. Also survived by his six grandchildren Kyle, Chloris, Soren, Avalon, Annika and Leifur. We invite you to join us in a Celebration of Paul’s Life on Sunday, September 18 from 1PM− 4PM at the Seine Net Loft in the Brittania Heritage Shipyards, 12451 Trites Road, Richmond. The family would like to thank the staff at the Rotary Richmond Hospice where he spent his final days.
