ccording to the Farmers’ Almanac, there are three weeks left of summer, apparently?

I say, apparently, as I had to peel my cold, sodden shirt off my back on Wednesday after a photo-shoot at Minoru Track coincided with one of those “summer” showers.

Then I had to negotiate the Wacky Races that are Richmond’s roads in the driving rain back to the office.

I know. One can’t complain after what seems like an endless summer of sun, punctuated only by the odd, errant shower.

And a long season it has been, not least for us parents, who’ve now served 10 weeks of our 10 and a half week (11 if your kid is at secondary) “sentence.”

I mean, really? Eleven weeks? Seasoned criminals in B.C. go to jail for less and that’s usually after they’ve used eight of their nine lives while on bail, as the system endeavors to “get to the root of the problem.”

Not sure about you guys, but I ran out of cunning plans mid-July (seems like a lifetime ago) to keep my 14-year-old son off the X-Box, the iPhone, TV remote and out of the house. Why does it feel like it’s me that’s doing the “time?”

I draw comfort from the oft-spoken sentiment that “he’s at that difficult stage,” too old for camps, too young to party at Pemberton, too grumpy to do, well, almost anything.

Still, I’ve told him to enjoy his last few days of freedom; next year he’s going to be working or volunteering; of that I’m certain.

But then I got an email this week, tipping me off about a father who took his 12-yearold son on a little bike ride — to Edmonton! (see front cover and page 13) Now that’s how you kill some of that sentence/vacation. Talk about going above and beyond.

Forget a wee cycle along the west dyke.

Not this guy. He took his pre-teen on an eight-day, 1,116.2-kilometre pedal through Hope, Merritt, Banff and finally Red Deer, before a minor accident called a halt to the ambitious jaunt, just 160 kilometres shy of their intended destination.

The pair, mercifully, took the train back to Vancouver, and the dad was no doubt feeling pretty good about the “adventure” and life experience he’d bestowed on his son.

I’m sure his son was thankful, as well.

And, with next summer’s “sentence” in mind, I was reminded that my son has always wanted to see New York.

Is that so? “Check the air pressure in your tires will you, son; there’s a good lad.”

Same for the 401 route; many buses that before routed directly to Steveston to turn into 410s will make that same loop up Fourth in reverse, to be pointed in the right direction for the return trip.

Altogether, dozens of buses will already have traversed Fourth Avenue before most residents have poured their first morning coffee.

The one saving grace is that some of those will be newer model, hybrid buses, considerably quieter than the older diesels.

Still, the added traffic, combined with the fact that, done properly, interlining can make for much more convenient service for local transit users, means many will be less than happy with the new arrangement.

Dear Editor, Come Sept. 5, many Fourth Avenue residents in Steveston will find their peace and quiet deep-sixed.

It’s then, Labour Day, that an additional 100 buses, 300 per day in total — and triple the number of just a few years ago — will start running up and down what was once a quiet residential street.

Why? Buses on the busy 410 route will no longer operate out of the Richmond Transit Centre in Ironwood, but be based instead out of the new Hamilton garage in Queensborough.

Until now, interlining among Richmond routes saved many buses from having to use Fourth Avenue.

A 410 bus pulling into the Second Avenue and Chatham Street Steveston terminus, continued as a 402 heading up No. 2 Road to Brighouse Station, or a 401 to Horseshoe Way or Riverport.

In reverse, those buses turned back into 410s heading back to the 22nd St. Station.

Fighting for schools Dear Editor, As the summer holidays come to a close, many students will be returning to schools that are not able to withstand a major earthquake.

Seismologists agree that there is a one in three chance of “the big one” within the next 50 years. Some even argue that it may even happen within the next 10 years.

Despite more than half of Richmond public schools requiring seismic upgrades, the current provincial government is not backing down on the release of much-needed funds until the district is “at capacity.”

Currently, Richmond School District is running “under capacity” (according to the Ministry) at 81 per cent, which allows for just enough space for band, resource, and art rooms, computer labs and before/after school care rooms. Hardly under-utilized.

However, the provincial government is forcing the school board to find ways to increase enrolment capacity — which leaves the school trustees no other other choice but to consider closing schools.

Because of this ridiculous requirement, the fate of 16 elementary schools will be decided in the next few weeks. When the decision is finalized, three to five schools will face permanent closure, resulting in hundreds of displaced students, not to mention many families who will be scrambling for child care.

The public education system remains chronically under-funded. Each year, families shell out hundreds of dollars to parent advisory councils to help cover basic costs such as library books and computers.

Teachers spend hundreds, some even thousands, of their own money to stock a classroom. The current government needs to stop making funding announcements; anyone can see past their fake smiles; they are only interested in retaining votes.

I urge everyone in Richmond to join us for a rally on Saturday Sept. 17, at 4:30 p.m., in front of the office of MLA John Yap in Steveston. Your presence will send a strong message to those in power.

n agreement to settle a simmering feud between a Mandarin-speaking strata council and some of its English-speaking residents has failed.

According to one of the complainants, Andreas Kargut, a settlement that negated the need for a B.C. Human Rights Tribunal case, concerning the alleged racial discrimination by the council of the 54-unit Wellington Court, has broken down.

Furthermore, Kargut’s co-complainant, Harry Gray, says he’s now seeking redress at B.C.’s newly-established Civil Resolutions Tribunal, for what he calls an abuse of power by a former council member.

On Monday night, residents of Wellington Court, on Heather Street, met for their annual general meeting (AGM).

Last year, the AGM was held in Mandarin, prompting the human rights claim, which now appears to be moving ahead toward an official hearing, following the apparent breakdown in negotiations from a pre-settlement meeting between the two parties in July.

The six, non-Mandarin speaking complainants learned in mid-August that the existing

council had refused to settle the dispute, after claiming Kargut breached a non-disclosure agreement for a pre-settlement hearing by speaking to local, national and international media interested in the case.

In turn, Kargut, who denies the allegation, also claims a member, or members, of the council also breached the non-disclosure agreement.

“I believe they were looking for any excuse not to sign” the agreement, said Kargut, who contends the council is attempting to end the dispute by causing financial hardship.

“With them going back and forth, it’s costing us money,” said Kargut, who claims his group has spent about $25,000 in legal fees.

In order to pay for the hearing, Kargut started a GoFundMe campaign, which he believes is now being sabotaged with defamatory comments by the respondents, or someone connected to them.

Kargut said he expects the council’s lawyer, who is paid via the strata’s insurance policy, could file for a dismissal of the claim. In turn, Kargut’s lawyer would need to argue against the dismissal. If Kargut’s lawyer is successful, the case would then be heard by the tribunal.

“When they were challenged, the wife of the gentleman concerned said, ‘It’s not illegal, we’re not doing anything that’s illegal. My reply to them was, ‘It may not be illegal, but it’s not democratic,’” said Gray.

Gray has now examined the Strata Property Act and is challenging the 2015 AGM decisions, based on the fact the president used more than 50 per cent of the strata’s votes.

P Joe Peschisolido was in Steveston Wednesday morning to announce $9.6 million for various projects around the village’s inner harbour, including channel dredging.

“We promised Canadians that we would invest in infrastructure and that includes small harbours,” such as Steveston, said the Liberal MP

for Steveston-East Richmond, explaining that the funding is for projects over the next year.

The announcement mirrored another one made in May 2015 by Peschisolido’s predecessor, Conservative MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay, who, leading up to the federal election, promised $14 million over two years for the same projects, such as reconstruction of the government pier at Third Avenue, replacing the village’s public

Peschisolido’s commitment is only for 2016 and doesn’t include Findlay’s commitments to rebuild wharves on Sixth Avenue and floating docks at Nelson Pond, which have yet to be attended to.

Peschisolido said the government will revisit what else is needed come 2017.

Standing beside Peschisolido was Coun. Harold Steves, who said “hopefully” this federal money will finally be spent to improve the harbour.

“We had been after (the federal government) for the last two years but they didn’t come through. We were going nowhere,” said Steves.

To date, stalled federal funding has hampered the Steveston Harbour Authority (SHA) over recent years, according to its members.

“We’ve been standing still for a number of years in this industry, but we do have plans to expand this place for the benefit of the whole coast and the commercial fishing industry,” said Robert Kiesman, chair of the authority’s board of directors.

Peschisolido said SHA would have a “big say” in how the money — distributed by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans — will be spent. He said the investment will spur local jobs in the fishing industry.

portion of Steveston Channel.

According to the City of Richmond, Port of Vancouver has “exhausted” its dredging budget for the channel.

In 2014, the city, port and provincial government effectively split the $1.1 million tab to dredge the westerly side of the channel.

It will cost $1.35 million to dredge the eastern side.

Richmond has already committed $450,000, the province has agreed to pay $319,000 and the SHA board had, to date, authorized up to $550,000.

Peschisolido said the SHA will determine how much of the federal money will be used for dredging.

Initially, SHA only budgeted $100,000.

The City of Richmond presently has $1.5 million set aside for future channel dredging but city council wants other parties to match its contributions.

While dredging of the main Fraser River arms is left to Port of Vancouver, local channels, such as Steveston’s, have seen limited contributions, leading to municipalities to pick up costs, said Steves.

Since 1998, following changes to the Canada Marine Act, there has been no federal funding for such secondary channels.

“There is the issue of the responsibility of dredging,” noted Peschisolido, who stated “conversations” will be had with Port of Vancouver.

City of Richmond to honour Olympian Evan Dunfee T

he City of Richmond will honour local Olympian Evan Dunfee on Saturday as part of the Richmond World Festival celebrations in Minoru Park.

A special salute to Dunfee will take place at 6 p.m. on the World Festival main stage. Following the brief ceremony, Dunfee will be available for an autographsigning session at the Olympic Experience tent on the festival grounds until around 7 p.m.

Dunfee, a Richmond resident and competitive race walker, won international acclaim in the recent Rio 2016 Olympic Summer Games. After competing in the 50-kilometre race walk, Dunfee finished

fourth, while setting a new Canadian record for the event, both notable achievements.

However, it was his post-race actions that brought him international attention.

Dunfee was in contention for a medal throughout most of the race.

With a few minutes to go, he was bumped by another competitor as they were vying for third place in the race. The bump disrupted Dunfee’s stride and he came in fourth.

The race referee awarded Dunfee the bronze medal spot, before a subsequent appeal by the Japanese walker led to the Richmondite dropping back to fourth

again.

Dunfee then declined an opportunity to appeal at a higher level, saying he wouldn’t have felt comfortable taking the medal.

Dunfee’s display of sportsmanship versus winning a medal drew worldwide acclaim and he was praised as one of the true “heroes” of the Rio Games, providing inspiration to youth and others across the globe.

Richmondites can rest easy again now that Dairy Queen has reopened in Richmond, after a blizzard of local closures and relocations left them temporarily scrambling for an alternative evening treat.

In March, the long-established City Centre Dairy Queen was forced to move due to redevelopment. It has now reopened at the corner of No. 3 and Francis roads.

“We’re excited to be back,” said owner Rahul Mehta, from the new fast-food restaurant and ice cream parlour.

This summer, Dairy Queen also temporarily closed in Steveston as Minato Village shopping centre began its redevelopment.

Mehta said extra electrical work in the shopping plaza stalled his shop’s reopening (planned for May), temporarily leaving customers without their “hot eats” and “cool treats.”

In recent years past, Dairy Queen has also closed at Richmond Centre, Terra Nova and East Cambie.

“People have been waiting for a long time for this,” admitted Mehta.

The new location appeared busy on Tuesday afternoon and Mehta said he’s planning a grand opening next week.

Despite the new digs, running the restaurant will be, as always, long-time manager Lynn Hallgren.

John Huang took his son, Leo, on a summer bike ride — to Alberta PHILIPRAPHAEL Staff Reporter

W

hen his friends ask Leo Huang what he did this summer, all he’ll have to do is smile to get the tale rolling.

That’s because his grin will reveal a chipped front tooth and a few retaining wires — a reminder of the adventure the 12-year-old embarked on with his dad, John, as they cycled almost 1,300 kilometres from Richmond to just short of their goal in Edmonton.

It was a 10-day odyssey, with eight days of pedaling up some steep sections across the Rockies and down into the flat lands of Alberta where, in Red Deer, their journey came to an abrupt halt.

Prior to taking off from their Francis Road home on July 30, the Huangs did some training to prepare for the road and the mammoth ride ahead.

John, an IT worker, is a regular cyclist, who uses his workday commute to and from Burnaby to include regular exercise in his busy home/work life routine.

The daily, 50 km round trips made the 43-year-old fit enough to consider the challenge of cycling to the Alberta capital. But he had to convince Leo, who was only used to a quick, five-minute ride to and from Jessie Wowk elementary, and get him ready for the demands of logging an average of 150 km during an often grueling, eight-hour day on the bike.

Fortunately, the idea of taking to the open road with his dad sparked a sense of adventure with Leo, and once their plans started to take shape about 12 months before saddling up, his enthusiasm spilled over into school.

“I was, like, excited to go because l had already (told) my friends that we were going to do this,” he said.

The training included regular Sunday trips to the North Shore and hikes up the Grouse Grind with Leo and John’s youngest son, eight-year-old Skye.

At the start, it took them about an hour and 40 minutes to complete the steep, 2.9 km (1.8 mile) trail that rises 853 metres (2,800 feet). After hitting the trail for about a year, that time was pared down to the 70-minute range.

The record time for completing the hike, which was set in 2010, is just a shade over 25 minutes.

“That was very good training,” John said. “It prepared us for the hills we knew would be on our route to Edmonton.”

June. The first was to Whistler and the second was a return trip between Richmond and Squamish. The roughly 140 and 180 km jaunts went well and took 10 and 12 hours, respectively, to complete.

They were set. The route was planned to include a rotation of two days riding and one day of recovery. Hotel stays were booked. And equipment checked and readied.

The open road beckoned.

n their first day out from Richmond, they made it to Hope, a distance of 176 km. Then, on day two, it was on to the Coquihalla Highway and the energy-draining, 127 km ride through some unrelenting steep sections on the way to Merritt.

“One part, it’s almost 20 km uphill,” John said, noting that the infamous section leading to the Coquihalla Highway’s summit has claimed many a victim of the vehicular kind since it was opened in 1986.

But it didn’t stop the Huangs.

“We did take breaks, but we finished it,” John said with a

smile.

Roger’s Pass was their last steep ribbon of asphalt to scale, but the promise of soon cycling downhill and the mostly flat roads of Alberta helped pull them through.

“We knew it would be very hard until we reached Alberta,” John said. “After all, we were going to cross the Rockies. Following Banff, it was going to be fun. It would be downhill and then flat.”

While they were passing some of the most fabulous scenery the region had to offer, the duo didn’t spend much time marvelling at nature’s wonders.

“You may not believe it, but we didn’t,” John said. “We had a plan that we had to stick to and it didn’t leave us time to stop and take in the scenery. When we did stop, we had to try and do our best to recover rather than do something else. We had to remain focused.”

To help fuel portions of their journey between towns, they packed along water, apples, energy gels and tomatoes.

The strategy worked well.

But on their last day, the wheels came off their journey.

About 60 km into their planned 230 km ride into Edmonton, Leo ran over a piece of twisted metal debris along the side of the road, throwing him off balance and face-first into the handlebars of his lightweight, carbon fibre road bike.

The collision knocked out one of his two front teeth.

They immediately stopped and Leo scrambled to recover his tooth that John then safely tucked into his hip-mounted riding pouch and called for an ambulance.

“My dad dragged me to the side of the road and yelled at me to find my tooth,” Leo said with a laugh.

Luckily, five minutes later, the paramedics arrived and carted Leo off to hospital in Red Deer with his tooth, which was implanted soon afterwards.

“I thought it was a dead tooth, but the paramedic asked me for it and the dentist they contacted said to put it in milk to help save it,” John said.

“We planned this trip very well, did very well, but things fell apart at the very last,” John said, adding he was very proud of Leo’s determination. “On the way, he never complained once.

Never said he wanted to give up.”

Next summer, the bikes will be parked and a trip to New Mexico is on the cards.

“But, before Leo goes to university, I would like to cycle across Canada with him,” John said.

Leo quipped that he hopes is dad “won’t be too old to do it by then.”

Parents ‘flying blind’ on costs

W

hile eight out of 10 Canadian parents claim they have a good understanding of the costs associated with a post-secondary education, a new CIBC poll finds that almost 75 per cent don’t really seem to grasp the actual cost of tuition.

What’s more, almost 40 per cent admit they don’t know what to budget for their children’s non-tuition costs, such as books, accommodation and living expenses.

“Our poll finds that most parents are unaware of the real costs of their children’s post-secondary education,” said Kathleen Woodard, senior vice president, Retail and Business Banking, CIBC. “It’s stressful when you don’t know if you are on the right track or not. Have I saved too much, too little or just enough? Many parents think they know what to expect, but end up being surprised at the true cost.

That makes it hard to budget and build a savings plan.”

Key poll findings include: • As many parents underestimate (25 per cent) the yearly tuition cost as they overestimate it (22 per cent), with another 27 per cent admitting that they don’t know the actual cost.

• Only 20 per cent estimated the cost of tuition at between $6,000 and $9,999.

That compares to an average of $6,191 in tuition for an undergraduate degree in Canada — ranging from as low as $2,660 in Newfoundland and Labrador to $7,868 in Ontario, the highest, according to the most-recent data from Statistics Canada.

• One in five (19 per cent) parents believe their children can get by on a monthly budget of less than $500. The mean estimate for non-tuition costs from the poll is $1,333 a month.

• Despite this wide variety of views, the vast majority of parents— 81 per cent — say they have a good understanding of the overall cost of postsecondary education.

A CIBC poll in August 2015 found that more than half of post-secondary students tapped their parents for additional support while at school because they ran out of money. The poll also finds that 39 per cent of parents

with children enrolled or recently graduated, say it cost them more than expected, while 46 per cent said in hindsight, they should have started saving earlier.

While 76 per cent of parents saving for their children’s post-secondary school education have set up a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP), many lack fundamental knowledge about RESPs. “It’s never too late to start contributing to a RESP,” said Woodard. “Even if you skip a year or five years of putting money into the RESP, there are opportunities to benefit from the government grant.

It’s certainly money that you don’t want to leave on the table.That extra $500 grant per year might be the difference of whether your child works part-time during school or can focus solely on their studies.”

• 53 per cent believe RESP contributions are tax deductible, which they are not.

• 45 per cent think money saved in an RESP can only be used for tuition; it can actually be used for any purpose, not limited to tuition, books and living expenses.

Here are five tips for parents: 1. Start early 2. RESP contributions can be made until children reach age 31 3. Explore all government grants - federal and various provincial governments have incentives for education savings that are administered through RESPs. 4. Set financial priorities and map out how to achieve them 5. Talk to a qualified expert - know the RESP rules, limits, over contribution penalties and map out an investing and withdrawal strategy.

ou could say that Richmond’s Vedanshi Vala won a recent national history award by “accident.”

No, it wasn’t a chance encounter of the frivolous kind that earned the soon-to-be Grade 10 McRoberts student a spot among winners, who submitted videos on Canadian history to the Young Citizens program.

Instead, it was a car accident in late 2015 that inspired her to delve deeper into researching Dr. Wilder Penfield, a Canadian pioneer in the treatment of brain surgery.

“Following the accident, I really found out how doctors have a great impact on their patients’ lives,” Vedanshi told the News.

A utility van slammed onto the rear of the vehicle Vedanshi was riding in last October, leaving her with whiplash and concussion. Her injuries hampered her ability to attend classes, and she had to continue studies at home.

“Basically, I was seeing a lot of doctors and physiotherapists afterwards and I realized how a doctor can really make or break a patient,” she said, adding she saw parallels from her experience in Penfield’s life and work as

he sought to treat epilepsy - a condition his sister died of – with a process referred to as ESB (electrical stimulation of the brain).

The procedure involves keeping the patient awake, but under local anesthesia, to help the surgeon pin-point the part of the brain that was causing seizures.

“This is still being used by doctors today to treat epilepsy, Alzheimer’s and other diseases like that,” Vedanshi said.

This is not the first time Vedanshi has done research on Penfield. Back in Grade 6 at McNeely elementary, he was her subject for a regional heritage fair entry where she won an award.

“So, this year, I used all the

knowledge I had and took it further,” Vedanshi said, adding she thrust herself into the video she made for the contest, playing the roles of a TV news presenter, Penfield, his patient and the patient’s husband.

“I personally enjoy giving myself challenges. And I decided I needed one more, so I entered the competition,” she said.

“And I thought that my idea was pretty original where I played the different characters in the video. Plus, I enjoy acting.”

For being named among the winners in the video competition, Vedanshi will attend Canada National History Youth Forum in Ottawa this fall.

Summer blooms are fading, or have lost their brilliance. The hot, humid days have left behind some pretty sad plants in the garden in spite of our valiant efforts to water, weed and deadhead.

How can you bring back the lustre in your lack-lustre gardens?

General maintenance will help add some life to many of your summer flowering plants so that they continue to bloom into the fall.

Continue to cut back overgrown plants, deadhead spent flowers, feed containers and tired border perennials with liquid food and water, water, water.

Keep on top of weeds as they take valuable nutrients from your garden plants.

The more you pick flowers from your garden, the more you will encourage more flower buds to form and open.

Deadhead (cut the dead flower heads) plants such as dahlias, roses and penstemon to prolong the display colour well into early autumn.

Don’t neglect your hanging baskets at this time. Deadheading, feeding and watering hanging baskets will keep them robust through until autumn.

Planting some brightly coloured annuals, grasses and fall perennials will also help invigorate a late summer garden.

But if you really want to add some dazzle to your late summer garden, take a look at your container gardens! Add some pizazz to your containers with brilliant colours that scream “autumn” such as the deep purples of ‘redbor’ kale, heuchera, vibrant orange and yellow of multicolour ornamental peppers, ‘delta fire’ pansies and rust-brown of carex ‘Prairie fire’.

And finally, incorporate elements from your environment — cattails from local ponds, grasses from fields, seedpods from castor beans, cut branches and other materials that reflect what is going on in your garden or in nature at this time of year.

Art deco public bath restored as art museum Allan Lynch

M

ost people travel to northern France to visit the battlefields and war memorials that litter Flanders.

During the First World War this area was the epicentre for years of trench warfare.

They don’t come expecting fine arts.

But before the Axis and Allies dug in, the region was rich from mining and milling. In its peaceful heyday, wealthy mill owners and in-

dustrialists splashed money on paintings, sculpture and decorative arts.

Their generosity formed the basis of a collection housed in the National School of Industrial Arts in Roubaix.

After the Second World War the area fell on challenging times economically, the building closed and the collection was dispersed.

Fortunately, what was done has mostly been undone thanks to the opening in 2001 of La Piscine Musée

d’art et d’industrie André Diligent.

La Piscine is a delicious surprise. It is a facility that has gone from hygiene to high art.

The most architecturally interesting part is the former public bath, opened in 1932. It closed in 1985 and sat decaying for more than a decade, alongside what was once a mill.

Eventually, the community combined a desire to find a use for this block of derelict buildings with the wish to

see its handsome art collection once more on display and decided to create La Piscine.

Behind its factory façade, which faces the city’s central plaza, La Piscine opens up to show its eccentric, elegant art deco bones. The museum’s “art and industry” tag line is confusing. There are no machines on display.

Mostly the collection reflects the region’s golden era, showcasing what were then contemporary late-19th- and early-20th-century works,

alongside Old Master — like paintings of notable local people at work, or at play as the result of the profits of their labours.

While the depth, scope and quality of the collection is unexpected, so is the presentation.

The various galleries are woven throughout the complex, encircling a central garden reached via the excellent Meert Restaurant and Tearoom.

The biggest surprise is the main “gallery,” which employs the now-modified former swimming pool as a feature.

Juliette balconies flourish under the vaulted ceiling book-ended by art deco stained-glass sunbursts.

Along the pool deck are rows of sculptures of Greek goddesses, modern nymphs and foppish, pre-revolutionary aristocrats.

The tiled men and women’s changing cubicles have become micro galleries. Beyond is a warren of art-filled niches and galleries

displaying the local collection as well as travelling exhibitions from Paris’s Musée d’Orsay, Louvre and Rodin Museum, among others.

It is such an interesting re-purposing of a building you have to at times force yourself to focus on the art.

Its multiple, odd spaces allow for a sense of discovery beyond that offered by traditional galleries.

Roubaix is a community that lives in the shadow of the larger, better-known regional capital, Lille, 14 km to the southwest.

In addition to the galleries and restaurant, La Piscine has a fabric library and gift shop and is next to a design centre where new and emerging artists sell their creations.

The Caliterra has lots of finesse in its finish and works well with food or enjoyed on its own.

Radio Boka has less acid and a touch of sweetness compared with the dry Caliterra so it is softer and probably works better as a sipper than a food companion. Serve it chilled and the off-dry finish will seem drier.

“There are lots of sleeper companies here, employing a lot of people but they sell globally,” El-Ramly said, adding his familyowned company employs 200 people and has a mostly international clientele.

“This is great for a young entrepreneur to see that you can make it internationally, despite not being well-known here.”

El-Ramly also sees the innovation committee as a way to mentor new entrepreneurs and find ideas to attract and expand the local tech industry.

The committee is currently working on a policy paper with goals and deadlines.

While increasing opportunities in green tech in Richmond is the local chamber’s goal, Undseth aims to expand it to the provincial and national level as innovation is lacking in Canada.

He said Canadian universities are behind in connecting their research to business opportunities, especially compared to their American counterparts.

“Stanford netted $1.3 billion in royalties and MIT issued 288 patents [in 2014] but in Canada, $10 million was netted by all Canadian universities,” Undseth said, noting the University of Toronto, one of the country’s leading research schools, issued only eight patents.

“This is just the beginning,” Undseth said about the committee, “this is not just a Richmond thing. I want to see Canada lead the world in clean technology.”

Richmond food wholesaler has been ordered to pay a $77,500 fine after pleading guilty to three counts of illegal possession of endangered northern abalone, under the Species at Risk Act (SARA), plus one violation of the Fisheries Act. According to documents from Richmond Provincial Court, NG Fung Enterprises, operated by a Chi Fai “Patrick” Kwok, was visited by fishery officers on three separate occasion between December 2013 and June 2014.

A significant quantity of abalone was discovered in the retail store, warehouse, and in a concealed storeroom.

Subsequent DNA testing by the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ Molecular Genetics Lab, at the Pacific Biological Station in Nanaimo, confirmed the presence of endangered Northern abalone.

Due to serious conservation concerns documented by scientists and fishery managers, all abalone fisheries were closed in B.C. in 1990.

In 2003, northern abalone were listed and protected. The court document said that, despite continued efforts to rebuild abalone populations and prosecute individuals involved in illegal harvest and trade, northern abalone show little sign of recovery.

The greatest threat to the survival of this species continues to be illegal harvest, which is, in turn, driven by the illegal trade.

The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) re-assessed the northern abalone status in 2009, designating the species as endangered because there had been little or no recovery of the wild abalone population, particularly the larger reproductive animals.

n outstanding performance in Texas is sending Bianca Go to this month’s World Junior Wushu Championships for the second time in her promising career.

Go will be stepping aside briefly from her Grade 12 year at Steveston-London Secondary School to attend the Junior Worlds in Burgos, Bulgaria, slated for Sept. 25 to Oct. 4.

She earned the trip to Europe and the opportunity to represent Canada by reaching the podium twice at the recent 11th Pan Am Wushu Championships in Lub-

bock, Texas.

Go thrived in her speciality event — double edge sword — to capture the gold medal.

She also added silver in hand forms. This will be the final time she is eligible to attend Junior Worlds before moving up to the senior level.

It’s through years of tremendous dedication and hard work she has progressed to become one of the best in the country in her sport which is a modern exhibition of traditional martial arts and requires tremendous athleticism.

Go will be spending plenty of time in gym over the next few weeks, leading up to her departure for Bulgaria.

RGSA strikes first sponsorship deal R

ichmond Girls Soccer Association (RGSA) is set to kickoff the 2016-17 season with the organization’s first-ever corporate sponsor.

Steveston Real Estate and Penta Homes will each contribute $12,000 over the next two years ($24,000 total) to help pay for new equipment, fund operations and create additional training opportunities. In return, the company logos have been added to all RGSA team kits ages U10 and above.

“We’re really proud to make this commitment and provide support for the RGSA,” said Barry Cavanaugh, President of Penta Homes.

“The association provides an important pathway for girls and women in our community, of all ages and skill levels, to play or be involved in soccer.”

The 30-year-old is one of 14 returning players from the Canadian team that won in silver at last year’s Pan American Games in Toronto. The World Cup roster was finalized following the senior women’s national championships where Hartley led Alberta to the bronze medal. She is a plastic surgery resident at the University of Calgary after earning her Doctor of Medicine at UBC. Batting lead-off and playing in centre field, Hartley finished nationals Becky Hartley with a .318 average that included three doubles and seven runs.

Canada will open the 12-team tournament Saturday against No. 1 ranked and defending world champions, Japan. Other opening round match-ups include India (Sept. 4) and the Netherlands (Sept. 5). Following the opening round, the top two teams in each of the three pools will advance to the medal round.

Canada has won four medals all-time (one silver, three bronze) in six Women’s World Cup events with the most recent, a bronze, back in 2012.

Hartley also thrived on the softball diamond where she played at SFU and also suited up for Canada at the 2006 World Championships.
