y son was only about four our five years old when he was insistent we go to Garry Point Park one day to “look for something and I know where it is,” he explained in that fulsome way kids have.

I had no clue what he was talking about, but a trip to Garry Point sounded good.

Once we got there, he was like a dog on the hunt for a bone. After scrambling along the shore’s edge and getting shredded by the blackberry bushes (that have since been removed), he came to a large rock near the point. He looked furtively around to see if anyone was watching, then cleared away the smaller rocks at the base and reached in behind the big rock and came out with a small plastic box.

I couldn’t believe it. How the heck did he know that was there?

We opened the box to find a little notebook, a pencil, a few Pokemon cards and some other trinkets. A pot of gold couldn’t have been more exciting — well maybe. But, still, it was an incredible thrill. The idea that we were in the loop of this secret communication gave us the tingles.

In the box was a particular toy or trinket that caught his eye. He explained that we could take it, but we were supposed to leave something. (Clearly, he had been well briefed, either by a friend or someone at preschool.)

We hadn’t come prepared with an offering, so we planned to go home to get a treasure of our own and come back the next day to make the trade. As I stood watch, my son sneakily negotiated the blackberry thorns to put the box back where no one, save for us in the know, would find it.

Such was my introduction (about 15 years ago) to the phenomenon of geocaching.

Today’s feature (see page 17) goes into more detail about who does this and why.

While I certainly haven’t made a hobby of it the way some you’ll read about have, I can appreciate there is something special to it.

For months afterwards, maybe even a couple of years, whenever we were at Garry Point, my son would look for the box, just to see it’s still there and look at what was in it.

The thrill of discovering buried treasure is timeless. But so is that precious sense of feeling a part of something bigger, the idea we can give and take from a source that we willingly share with others — others we don’t know, but we’re somehow communicating with.

Granted, this is just a game, but it’s worth its weight in gold if it can help us savour those moments when we recognize our connection to our physical space and those strangers with whom we share it. That web is, after all, our reality. I suspect, the more we appreciate that fact, the kinder we will be to each other and the planet. Indeed, that’s a treasure worth hunting.

Dear Editor, Phoenix Art Workshop has hosted successful and well attended Grand Prix of Art competitions in Ladner and Richmond. This year, the Richmond challenge will not be held due to logistical challenges.

That is a pity. Locals and tourists attend the competition to view artists painting in the open air. It demystifies the studio and encourages participation, and brings tourism to town. I hope the City of Richmond will return to help fund this event in any way possible.

At peak rush hour, there are approximately 7,000 people in the “seismically risky” Massey Tunnel.

On a school day, there are approximately 7,200 children in Richmond alone, attending schools that are at risk of “widespread damage or structural failure” and “failure to building elements such as walls.” Yet, the B.C. government, led by Clark, is dragging its heels on protecting small children.

She is not leading the charge to spend $3.5 billion to make them safe. She is making them wait in unsafe schools, forcing school closures that will overcrowd those same dangerous schools, and only then will the B.C. government start evaluating schools for repair — maybe.

The cost per person to make commuters in the Massey Tunnel safe is $500,000.

The cost per child to make our sons and daughters safe is $23,000. Clark has added up her priorities. I hope voters will do the same.

Once you transfer title to your child …

There are various reasons that parents will transfer title to land into their children’s names.

It may be to avoid having the property fall into their Estate when they die (so as to save on Probate fees). But once the transfer is done, the parent cannot assume that title can come back if something goes wrong later on.

Last week, reasons for judgment were released in the case Gliege v. Gliege. A father, after making his Will (in which he bequeathed a property to his son), decided to transfer title to his property to his son while still alive. The son’s subsequent behavior with the property greatly angered the father, causing him to launch action to have the gift declared invalid. The father’s action failed.

The reason is that the evidence showed the father’s intention was clear when he transferred title. Ultimately, the events caused the son’s estrangement from the family. Be very careful and take your time, if you are considering a title transfer in your own family!

Foreign investment tax on farmland urgently needed Dear Editor, Re: “Richmond mayor wants foreigner tax on farms,” News, Aug. 12 Dr. Kent Mullinix (Director of KPU’s Institute for Sustainable Food Systems) supports a foreign ownership tax or an outright ban on foreign ownership of farmland, and Mayor Brodie’s call for a 15 per cent tax on foreign purchased farmland leaves some room for optimism.

A letter from Richmond City Council to the Agricultural Land Commission and the Ministry of Agriculture requesting house size and house location regulations on farmland is much overdue.

Three years ago, council attempted to implement zoning regulations on farmland but was met with opposition by special interest groups and the word “racist” was thrown out there just for good measure.

It appeared to have worked in stalling any council action. How have we come to this frustratingly absurd and unintelligible place? In the ensuing three years, our farmland has continued to morph into estates of major proportions, with the added benefit of agricultural land tax breaks and minimal farming. One such mansion is graced with an a llée (an avenue with trees lining both sides)… the farmland well camouflaged.

It is my understanding that B.C. has no restrictions on foreign ownership of agricultural land. And the jury is still out on

whether imposing a 15 per cent tax is in violation of our trade agreements [NAFTA or perhaps FIPA (Canada-China Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Act)] or somehow discriminatory under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Our scarce agricultural land is vulnerable to the forces of globalization, free trade treaties, special interest groups, speculation, and multi-national corporations, such that Canadian self-determination, land sovereignty and food security are eroding.

In spite of this reality, and because of it, it is incumbent on all levels of government to set policies and negotiate agreements that preserve, protect, and end speculation on this valuable resource.

Steveston Grand Prix of Art to park for a year Philip Raphael

T

he Steveston Grand Prix of Art is pulling into the pits and parking for at least the next year.

That’s according to its creator and organizer, Mark Glavina, owner of the Phoenix Art Workshop in the historic fishing village, who has run the painting competition for the past six years.

Glavina said the event — which gives artists who take part up three hours to complete their work in randomly assigned spot before it’s put on displayed and judged — requires a significant amount of time to organize and a small army of volunteers to put on. And he was hoping for the city to provide more support to help stage what he said is an event that is perfectly suited to Steveston’s picturesque waterfront.

“One of the reasons I started this event up is to celebrate the uniqueness of Steveston, which would, hopefully, make us less intent on tearing things down,” Glavina said.

Over each of the last four years, the event has attracted between 85 and 110 local artists. And with crowds of onlookers passing by the painting sites dotted around the waterfront, the grand prix was a good draw for the village.

He added in the past few years, there has been decreasing amounts of assistance from the city which, at one time, provided the

Glavina said that in 2015, the city requested it be removed as a host partner and did not supply the needed tents.

The man, who provided photos of himself depicting a heavily tattooed male, encouraged her to consider modelling and meet with his agent.

Later, the “agent,” who turned out to be Dadmand, contacted her and told her she could make a lot of money modelling. S.T. was skeptical and did not want to meet him, but in April 30, 2012, she contacted him after she’d been taken to St. Paul’s Hospital after ingesting cocaine and a large quantity of alcohol and needed someone to drive her home. Dadmand picked her up and took her to his apartment in Richmond, where they sat and drank wine in his living room and he talked to her about signing a modelling contract.

The judge concluded the victim was unconscious when Dadmand had sex with her during the night.

Glavina had hoped the competition would have, by now, become more self-sustaining and not take up as much of his time to produce.

But the idea of a timelimited painting competition lives on elsewhere.

Two years ago, Glavina expanded the event to include Ladner. When it was held this past July 15, it had 85 artists and enjoys the support of the municipality, which has agreed to a threeyear run.

Meanwhile, the city contends it has not decreased its involvement in Grand

Prix of Art and continues to support the concept and remains committed to working with Glavina.

“We understand that Mr. Glavina is tired of largely producing the event by himself with little assistance, which is certainly understandable,” said city spokesman Ted Townsend in an email to the News. “We appreciate the great efforts he has put into the event.

He also said that he and the artist guild had discussed taking a year off organizing events.”

Staff were anticipating contributing tents, staff and volunteer time and marketing and promotions for the event before Glavina indicated he was not planning to stage the event this year, he added.

Townsend said city staff have encouraged Glavina to either become a not-forprofit society or become affiliated with a not-for-profit arts group and apply for a City Arts and Culture Grant to help defray some of the costs.

Power line plan over Fraser Dave Wills

.C. Hydro has chosen an overhead transmission line crossing the Fraser River to relocate an existing line from the George Massey Tunnel.

The tunnel is scheduled to be decommissioned when it’s replaced by a 10lane bridge in 2022.

“Really, the key reason we chose this alternative is it offers the highest level of reliability and safety so we can continue to reliably serve the customers in this service area,” said project manager Navreet Kooner, noting the decision was reached last week.

Deas Island Regional Park would be home to the overhead line on the Delta side of the river.

The plan would require two steel lattice towers, approximately 120 metres in height (approximately half the height of the bridge), to support the overhead line crossing the river. One transmission tower would be located on Deas Island and the other in Richmond.

Freedom lattice tower, approximately 75 metres in height, would also be required on Deas Island. All towers would be located to the west of the bridge.

Kooner said the overhead option has the lowest construction risk, has low environmental impact, is the most cost efficient to build and has the longest in-service life of the other options B.C. Hydro considered.

Other alternatives included an underground

transmission line running under the Fraser River or a transmission line located on the bridge itself.

Kooner said B.C. Hydro would like to start site preparation activities this fall but noted it doesn’t have a detailed construction schedule yet.

The Metro Vancouver website says Deas Island Regional Park is “a great place for a picnic, a quiet walk or a paddle along the slough” and that the area is home to a variety of wildlife.

p to 350 evergreen runners and walkers are limbering up to pound the west dyke in Richmond in a few weeks, as the second annual FY8K event gears up for Garry Point Park.

Set to expand in participants by more than 50 per cent, Forever Young 8K — run by the 55 and over seniors organization Richmond Forever Young Club — the event on Sunday, Sept.

11 is heading to be another sell-out.

John Young, lead organizer of FY8K, is quite optimistic of selling all 350 spots, with 278 having already registered.

And with a BC Athletics certifier having measured the course this year, runners can test themselves officially against the clock.

“We had an 85-year-old set a world record last year, but it wasn’t official, as the course wasn’t certified,” said Young.

“This year it will be different and we expect more people to turn out with the distance being official.”

And this year, Young said an added attraction will be several exhibitors, as part of a mini seniors expo.

The run/walk starts at 9 a.m. at Garry Point Park, travels north up the west dyke for four kilometres, just before Terra Nova, and then U-turns back down to Garry Point Park.

You can register on the day, up to 8:20 a.m., if there are any spaces. Register in advance at ForeverYoung8K.ca.

The age groups start at age 55 and, in five-year increments, go up to 100-plus with first place in each age group receiving a bottle of B.C. wine. All participants receive a T-shirt, medal, chip timing, snacks and door prizes. Registration fee is $50 by Sept. 7 and $60 on the day of the race.

All proceeds from the event will go to Dream On Foundation for Seniors.

outcomes, places of healing and refuge for patients, families and staff. More recently, church and seniors organizations have become interested in creating peaceful areas for their constituents.

The important feature of healing gardens is having real natural green vegetation, flowers and calming water features. It is also important to have the healing garden away from city noise and from outdoor smoking areas.

It is best to leave sculptures and structures out of the garden as sometimes these are viewed in a negative way!

We gardeners feel that all gardens are intrinsically healing. While strolling through green spaces, forests, beautiful gardens, we experience an overall sense of wellbeing and peacefulness. Gardens have also been proven to reduce stress and provide relief from symptoms.

Children, especially those growing up in an urban environment, should get outside and into nature by visiting our local parks, hiking trails and forests. Studies have shown that after spending time outside in nature, our moods improve quickly, changing from anxious, stressed or even depressed to becoming more calm and balanced.

Many therapists use nature to heal family stress by giving

them a prescription of green therapy — getting outside into nature.

My husband and I have been hiking with our son and daughter since they were able to walk. We both grew up in the West Kootenays, surrounded by mountains, forests and lakes. Recently, our son and daughter took their three little girls on a four-day hike on the Heather Trail in Manning Park. The three little girls have all grown up in the city, spend a lot of time on technology but do love getting outdoors.

We hiked in with the “young people” for the first hour of their 30-hour hike.

The incredible sense of peacefulness and wellbeing as we hiked through the sub alpine meadows, overwhelmed us immediately.

Pokemon who? Geocachers are the real scavenger hunters Hedy Ng

I

t’s only a few weeks old and already the Pokemon Go craze — which saw millions of kids and adults around the world using their smartphones to search for virtual characters in unlikely places — has faded into the shadows.

Standing the test of time, however, are the original Pokemon Goers, known as geochachers to most of us.

“It’s not like I’ve always loved to get out to the outdoors and go hiking,” said Richmond’s Roland Greczmiel, whose geocaching username is RumRunner1. “[Geocaching] made a purpose to my hiking, walking, and bike riding.”

Geocaching is a popular outdoor activity which involves using a GPS device or smartphone to search for geocaches in different locations.

These geocaches are containers that can be found worldwide, in places ranging from parks to deserts.

They contain a logbook (in which you may record your name to log your find) and occasionally items that may be traded.

A geocoin can be picked up and moved from cache to cache by different geocachers.

It is logged and tracked as it changes locations, allowing geocachers to map its journey.

Greczmiel started geocaching in 2007 as a source of motivation for going outdoors. Since

then, he has found nearly 9,000 caches spanning more than four continents.

“I travel a lot, so it ties into travelling,” he said. One of his most memorable geocaching adventures took place in Eleuthera, an island in the Bahamas.

“It was called ‘Pirate’s Tomb’,” he recalls. “You had to hike down into... an underground cave that actually ended with skylights in it.

“There were holes in the ceiling and the sun would shine through. So you had all these long roots with the trees growing down it; it was just like in an Indiana Jones movie.”

Greczmiel also had fond memories of an underwater geocache series called “Swimmer’s Itch” in southern B.C. “You had to swim out to a marker buoy in a series of lakes,” he said.

“Once you got to the buoy, it would describe a word that was on the cache page. Then, you’d dive down and pull the logbook up, sign it on the surface of the water, [and put] it back down again.”

Another experienced Richmond-based geocacher, called “hairyhobbits,” started geocaching four years ago when his partner discovered the activity.

Upon finding his first cache, he was fascinated by the clever location it was hidden in.

“It was something that was in plain sight, that e everyone could see, but no o would notice,” he said. one Ever since, he has been g geocaching all over B.C. and e even in other countries.

“My goal was to find all the g geocaches in Richmond and I s haven’t finished that goal still y yet,” added hairyhobbits, who d didn’t want to give his real name. “Some are rather tricky.”

Aside from looking for caches, hairyhobbits “[spends] a fair bit of time looking after

caches.” He has hidden seven caches in the Steveston area and ensures that they are replaced if they go missing.

In the future, hairyhobbits wants to continue geocaching and finding more caches outside of Canada.

“I do plan to do more trips and try to find more caches in more places around the world,” he added.

As for advice for beginner geocachers, hairyhobbits suggests taking a look at the geocaching website.

“Don’t get frustrated, sometimes it’s hard to find caches,” he added. “Be patient and be stealthy.”

Beginner geocachers may start with Richmond’s own Geo-Quest, a series of 30 caches created and maintained by the City of Richmond.

hings are shaping up ahead of the scheduled opening day at Richmond’s newest shopping mall.

The Central at Garden City complex, which stretches eastward from the north east corner of Alderbridge Way and Garden City Road, is planned to open this fall — believed to be at the end of October — and so far has about 90 per cent of its spaces leased.

The anchor tenant in the complex — whose development meant clearing a small, urban forested area that created controversy at city hall before council finally green lit it more than two years ago — is a Walmart Supercentre. It will cover just under half of the total 372,000-square-feet in retail offerings. Other large chain stores in the complex will be Marshalls and Bed Bath & Beyond.

An estimated 975 jobs — about 240 at Walmart alone — will be created as a result of the development.

Part of that densification has also been worked into the mall’s design as building layouts feature two-storey structures to reduce their footprint. And a decrease in parking ratios from five spots for every 1,000 square-feet of shopping area to 3.4 cut the need for nearly five additional acres of parking spaces.

In addition to retail shopping, the new mall will present plenty of dining opportunities representing a mixture of recognizable chains, such as Fat Burger and Fresh Slice Pizza, and those smaller, independent eateries represented by the likes of Ajisho Japanese Restaurant.

Another feature of the mall is a large green space that covers the roof of the parkade structure directly east of the Walmart Supercentre. Kaiser said the topography of the area, which situates the parkade partly at grade level, lent itself to being home to a passive open green space and small, children’s playground area for visitors to use.

“We are providing a generous green space at the corner of Alexandra and May Drive which is approximately two-thirds the size of a soccer field or about 20 per cent bigger than the plaza outside of Richmond City Hall,” Kaiser said. “This green space will be attractive to our neighbours on the north and east and, while being maintained

by SmartCentres, will be programmed by the city’s parks department. It will also serve as a buffer between the residential and the commercial developments.”

Other environmentally friendly aspects include the fact 70 per cent of the energy the site consumes for heating and cooling will come from “green” sources by tapping into the Alexandra Neighbourhood District Energy Utility (DEU).

Kaiser added that the layout, which steers away from the traditional enclosed malls from a generation or two ago, was an aspect requested by the city.

“The city was very adamant that they wanted this to be pedestrian-friendly with a lot of connections throughout the site,” she said. “Once you walk through it, you will see there’s a lot of open space, a lot of seating areas and lots of views from different angles as you’re seated or walking around.”

Kasier added the trend away from covered mall complexes is a reaction to the increased density many city centres in North America are now adopting as residential land becomes more scarce and valuable.

“We’re in the middle of a residential neighbourhood on the north side of the complex and I think that’s what our shoppers want, and certainly what municipalities seem to be requesting,” she said. “They want people to come by car or transit and make it accessible.”

A

pair of Richmond lacrosse standouts have leading roles in taking the Delta Islanders to where they have never gone before.

The Islanders will be making their first-ever appearance at the Minto Cup national junior “A” championships which start this weekend at the Langley Events Centre. The four-team event features round-robin play through Monday and the top three moving onto the playoffs, including a best-of-five final series starting next Thursday.

Delta locked up one of two Minto Cup berths up for grabs in the host province by winning a B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League semi-final series against the New West Salmonbellies. The Islanders then took it one step further by upsetting seven-time defending champion Coquitlam Adanacs in the finals for their first BCJALL title in the franchise’s 15-year history.

A thrilling best-of-three series, featured two overtime battles, including a double overtime tilt in the deciding game. It was an all-Richmond connection that ended the drama as captain Brad Hofmann setup Nick Jensen for his second of the night, just 39-seconds into the sudden-death period.

Hofmann and Jensen are key defenders for the Islanders but their offenBrad Hofmann sive production played a big part in the series outcome.

Jensen posted 13 points in 21 regular season games and nearly matched that output in nine playoff games with 10 points, including five goals. The overtime winner was his second of the night in the series decider.

He said his offensive production reflects a number of changes the team made at the league trading deadline, including the addition of Victoria defender Adam Jay who also had two goals in game three.

The Adanacs had entered the finals with a perfect 25-0-0 record.

“I think it has a lot to do with the new additions, Adam especially. I don’t know what it is but we seem to work really well together,” explained Jensen. “I think we both push ourselves to get up the floor. We were getting killed by Coquitlam earlier in transition and thought we had the opportunity to give it back to them.”

Delta’s defenders have also been pushing forward a lot more since the club landed standout goaltender Kevin Orleman from the Ontario Junior “A” Lacrosse League.

During the overtime intermission, Delta coach Greg Rennie had encouraged his defensemen to jump into the play. Jensen would go on to score the biggest goal of his life.

“I was matched up against (Adanacs star Tyler) Pace and Jay took him down so I just

took off (on a 3-on-2 break),” recalled Jensen. “Their guy didn’t push (Hofmann) until late. I was off to the side a bit but was lucky to hit the bottom corner.”

Jensen began his junior “A” career in Burnaby last year thanks to the league’s midget draft. He came to Delta in a preseason trade and was re-united with Rennie who coached him with the Intermediate “A” Roadrunners.

Other former Roadrunners with Delta include Spencer Bromley, Jayden Campbell, Brett Anderson, Connor Davidson and goalie Ryland Hood.

“Nick is a big game player and he proved that in intermediate and when he played for me on the Canada West team last year (at the Junior Worlds),” said Rennie. “Hofmann was absolutely huge for us the entire series

Hofmann has been in Delta for the past three seasons and says the club has been building momentum towards its breakthrough run.

“Coquitlam has been really good in the past and this year we felt like we had what it takes to beat them,” he said. “We have all been working really hard for this, starting three years ago. It’s paid off now and we still have some work to do.”

The Islanders will open Minto Cup roundrobin play against Alberta champions Calgary Mountaineers and Ontario champions Orangeville Northmen on Saturday and Sunday respectively. It’s then a rematch with the Adanacs on Monday. All games start at 8 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre.
