losing a school is one of the hardest things for a school board to do — closing up to five, as Richmond is planning to do by September 2017, will be brutal.

The Richmond Board of Education claims the closures are a must to ensure our schools are, on average, at 95 per cent capacity. And 95 per cent capacity is a must or else the provincial government won’t give it the money it requires to make the remaining schools seismically sound. Currently, we’re told our schools are at 85 per cent capacity.

A few points. First, why a 95 per cent threshold? Granted, we want all our public facilities to be well utilized, but holding up an arbitrary number as the ultimate objective seems to be putting the cart before the horse — the horse, of course, being our school district’s own stated objective of “providing opportunities for all students to develop the attitudes, skills and knowledge which will enable them to enjoy a productive and satisfying life and to be positive, responsible participants in our democratic society and the global community.”

I’m not saying closing schools will necessarily undermine that goal, but it’s important to recognize public education is about more than maximizing capacity and any decision taken should support its larger purpose.

Second, how are we measuring school capacity? It appears the Ministry of Education`s formula involves counting the number of spaces in every enrolling classroom and compare them to school enrollment figures.

Some Vancouver trustees argue this overlooks classrooms used by adult education programs and childcare facilities, it counts special education classes with smaller class sizes as under-capacity, and includes rooms used for music and art lessons as enrolling classrooms which means they’re counted as empty.

But even if we accept the formula is sound and that 95 per cent is the magic number we should be aiming for, are we looking forward?

The city forecasts Richmond’s population to be 280,000 by 2041. That’s a 31 per cent increase in 25 years. Granted, if we keep building mega homes and luxury condos as foreign investments, there may not be a lot of kids around. But, even now, city council is planning for more townhouses built along arterial roads; townhouses tend to bring families.

I’m not saying (to paraphrase Monty Python) every school is precious; closing some may be what’s best. But forgive me my skepticism, both in regards to the province prioritizing the larger objectives of public education and the city ensuring we have a diversity of housing that supports families. That said, I’m an optimist. What matters now is that the city and school district work closely to do some careful planning so that 20 years out, we have a healthy, sustainable community. If well-educated kids aren’t at the heart of that, I can’t imagine what is.

Grandma ashamed of generation’s legacy

Dear Editor, Re: Au chides council’s closed-door decision, Letters, April 1.

I would like to respond to Councillor Chak. Au’s letter dated April 1.

Well said, sir.

I have lived in this area for a long time and have seen this park space being systematically destroyed piece by piece.

This was a very busy park and very well used by families from the surrounding Rideau School area, all of my grandchildren played all summer in this playground. Now all that remains is a mud hole. And it seems, according to what was said at the closed council meeting it will remain a mud hole until 2017.

First, let me give some background. The first adventure toy to go was the balance pole. It was broken by vandals and was never replaced. The tire swing, it just disappeared.

All that was wrong with it was the universal joint that the chains were attached to

Dear Editor, Recent articles and letters refer to the increasing proliferation of houses being built on farmland. In my neighbourhood, I see constant reminders of what is lost as new giant homes (mostly uninhabited) are built on what was once a farm field. The fields behind the house lay dormant, as I suspect the builders likely assume that in due time they’ll be able to put a subdivision there. Why wouldn’t they think so?

Interestingly, I saw on the news this evening how big a demand there is in Canada for locally produced food. Like many people, I try to support local growers as much as I can, but I have to wonder, where is this food going to be grown now that the demand is increasing? The farmland is decreasing at the same time as the demand for local food increases.

What’s the solution?

The arguments being spouted by some owners of farmland that land that has lain dormant for years can’t possibly be used for farming is nonsense. Any decent farmer would understand that land needs to be nourished correctly in order

squeaked — nothing some WD40 or some white grease would not fix.

The rest of the play apparatus — three slides, climbing ropes and pipes, and monkey bars all went a couple of months ago and left, as I said, a mud hole.

Since the adult learning school opened, we have lost a box hockey rink that the local kids played in, five large, mature maple trees, a basketball court and green space. All the shrubbery and annual plants at the front of the school were uprooted, and these areas were black-topped for parking.

I am certain there are plans for this area, and I don’t think these plans include a children’s playground. I am sick to the teeth of city council, the park department, and the school board paying lip service to the child obesity problem as they allow an area where kids can get a bit of exercise to be destroyed.

However, it seems obvious that the desire is for short-term financial gain, not long-term growing viability.

Will all food in the future have to be grown in hydroponic greenhouses because a few greedy individuals wanted to make a buck now?

As a grandmother of four, I find myself wondering what this generation is leaving for them and their own children in the future.

Are we not supposed to be stewards of the land, and try to do as little damage to it in our generation so as to protect future ones?

From what I’m witnessing, it sure doesn’t look that way to me, and I’m ashamed to count myself among the generation that has finally done what none of the others could do. That is to saddle our children and grandchildren with a future that is far less bright than the one our own parents left to us.

Coun. Day was spot on over new bridge Dear Editor, Re: “Be smarter with Massey Tunnel,” Letters, April 6.

Coun. Carol Day has articulated very well the argument for upgrading the Massey Tunnel (rather than replacing it with a massive bridge) in her letter.

So far, the provincial government seems to be determined to go ahead with the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project.

The City of Richmond will be one of the most adversely affected communities if the new bridge project goes ahead.

The decision-makers in Victoria seem to be oblivious to the concerns of citizens.

It must be emphasized that the proposed $3.5 billion tunnel replacement bridge is not the best solution to address the traffic tie-ups on Highway 99.

All this new bridge will do is move the traffic jam from south of the existing tunnel to the north.

The bottleneck at the Oak Street Bridge may get even

worse.

There is little doubt that Richmond will have to bear the brunt of the traffic congestion around this proposed new bridge.

Richmond City Council and a large number of Richmond citizens have expressed very serious concerns about the George Massy Tunnel Replacement Project.

Some of the concerns, such as its impact on the environment, the loss of very productive farmland, as well as the fact that the tolls are going to hurt ordinary citizens, don’t seem to be going anywhere.

The provincial government, especially the minister of transportation, must take these concerns into account before proceeding any further with this very expensive project.

There must be better ways to rectify the worsening traffic jams around the tunnel other than the proposed this massive tolled structure.

I think I’ll join the house hotel club Dear Editor, We live next door to a hotel. We bought our house several years ago thinking that our neighbourhood was zoned strictly for residential housing, but here we are living next door to a fully functioning hostelry with its accompanying parade of short-stay strangers.

Evidently, one of the selling points for this establishment is the chance to look down on our back porch and backyard from their second storey rooms and watch an actual family (you remember, there used to be a lot of those in Richmond) going about their daily routine. And our large lawn must also be an attraction, because we have seen several of the “hotel’s” clients taking photo-

graphs of it. It’s such a nice feeling to know that that we are not only providing entertainment for visitors to our city, but also making a contribution to tourism.

Having heard that there are more boutique hotels like the one next door springing-up all over the city, and that one doesn’t seem to need a licence to run one, perhaps we will think about turning our modest abode into a similar kind of haven for travelling businessmen, parachute students, and well-healed tourists.

And there would be a large lawn for them to wander around on. I think it would work.

Ladner crash claims life of Richmond driver Jessica Kerr

ne person is dead and another is in hospital with serious injuries following a single vehicle crash in east Ladner Wednesday.

Both victims are from Richmond.

Delta police spokesperson Sharlene Brooks said the crash occurred just after 9:30 a.m in the 9600-block of Highway 10.

Following an initial investigation, police believe the vehicle was travelling westbound

on Highway 10 when it veered left and went off the road into the ditch.

The driver, a 33-year-old Richmond man, sustained fatal injuries in the crash while the passenger, a 22-year-old woman, also from Richmond, had to be airlifted to hospital with serious life-threatening injuries.

Highway 10 was closed for several hours between 96 and 104 streets while officers investigated the crash. The incident is still under investigation and Brooks said she could not comment on a possible cause.

I

n early March, Road Rules wrote about ‘the Jeep driver’ with a blood alcohol level three times the legal driving limit whose vehicle “T-boned” a minivan killing four of the six occupants: a grandfather and his three grandchildren, siblings all, aged two, five, and nine. The investigation revealed that the Jeep driver, having braked for almost four seconds, struck at 85 km/h—hence the indication is that the vehicle speed limit was significantly in excess of the speed limit.

Having pleaded guilty to four counts of impaired driving causing death, four counts of driving over the legal limit, four counts of dangerous driving causing death, two counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm, two counts of driving above the legal limit causing bodily harm, and two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, on February 24th, in court in Newmarket, Ontario, the driver was remanded in custody for sentencing on March 29, 2016.

The result: a 10 year sentence with credit for the time he has spent in custody—meaning nine years/ four months with eligibility for parole after serving a third of his sentence. He has also been banned from driving for 12 years.

In handing down this sentence, described in media reports as “one of the harshest in recent legal memory for impaired driving causing death,” Ontario Superior Court Justice Michelle Fuerst was quoted as saying, “The high degree of Mr. Muzzo’s moral blameworthiness, combined with the enormous and far-reaching consequences of his offences, set this case apart from others.” Media reports also noted

that before giving her reasons, Justice Fuerst said she had received unsolicited messages from members of the public, which she filed with the court and said she ignored for the purposes of sentencing.

This sentence rejected the defence request for eight years while acceding to the Crown’s request for a 10 to 12 year sentence based on the principles of denunciation and general deterrence or, as one report put it, “basically to inspire fear in other potential drunk drivers by putting (the driver) with the worst of the worst.” Reports also note that the Crown prosecutor acknowledged the driver’s remorse, his early guilty pleas, and, except for 10 speeding tickets, his clean criminal record, and his steady employment and deep family and social support.

While together these factors predict a low risk for reoffending, the Crown argued they must be given less weight in a case like this, “at the most extreme end of the criminal drunk-driving spectrum.” The defence counsel’s argument for an eight year sentence was based on a 2011 ruling by the Ontario Court of Appeal in the case of R. v. Kummer, confirming that driver’s eight year sentence for killing three people in a drunk driving crash. Judge Fuerst reportedly acknowledged “justice is elusive, because nothing can repair the damage (this driver) did.”

Online comments and printed letters show people struggling with balancing what is appropriate punishment for this particular offender and what sentence would deter others from such conduct.

We hear that many say the Canadian parole system is too lenient. Some call for lifetime driving bans in cases of drunk driving causing death or injury.

hrough the doors of a Richmond church they filtered in slowly; sometimes in ones, some in twos, a few as families of four and five.

They were strangers from as far as East Vancouver and Surrey, they were faces familiar to each other through their work at Richmond Hospital, Vancouver Coastal Health or DeBeck elementary.

All of them were drawn like magnets to St. Joseph the Worker Parish on Williams Road on Tuesday to help one cause — saving the life of six-year-old Joshua Weekes.

The bone marrow drive was organized by friends and Richmond Hospital colleagues of social worker Lia Weekes, whose son, Joshua, is fighting a rare form of leukemia and urgently needs a stem cell transplant.

And, despite the best chance of a match coming from a very select group of donors sharing Joshua’s mixed ethnicity of Filipino, British, Icelandic and Caribbean — they also had to be aged between 17 and 35 — an impressive 244 people registered and gave a swab to the Canadian Blood Services.

“I saw a newspaper article on Facebook and I knew straight away I needed to help,” said Amie Arrieta, of Surrey, who is of Filipina descent.

“I’m a regular blood donor and a nurse; I’ve never done this before but I wanted to do something to help this little boy.”

Ibsen Pfaff, of south Vancouver, is of “several South African ethnicities” and was happy to help out, after his mom “told him to.”

“My mom heard about it on the radio and told me there was a possibility I could be a match, so here I am. And I always do what my mom tells me,” Pfaff said.

Kiran Dhanwant, a colleague of Lia, is a regular blood donor but registered for the first time as a bone marrow donor on Tuesday. “I always meant to do this, but when it’s so close to home…” said Dhanwant.

“I’m mostly doing it for Josh, but we can really help so many people here. He’s a wonderful little boy, so full of life and very positive.”

Running the drive was Trudi Goels, territory manager for Canadian Blood Services, who said Tuesday’s event was “very successful.”

“However, it doesn’t stop here. There are more than 700 patients in Canada, just like Joshua, who are looking for their stem cell donor,” Goels added.

“We are looking for more groups to host stem cell drives.

Schools, employers and community groups that have a large population of people between 17 and 35 are ideal hosts.

“Every event means we register more people and can get a step closer to finding a match for Joshua and all patients...”

Goels said it could take up to two weeks to determine whether someone from Tuesday is a match for Joshua.

Other ways people can help: Stop in and get swabbed at Canadian Blood Services clinics at 4750 Oak St., 888 Dunsmuir, both Vancouver, or at 15287 101 Ave. in Surrey and get swabbed there. If you didn’t make it to the drive, you can register online with OneMatch at blood.ca/en/stem-cell/register-onematch and the cheek swab package will be mailed.

Joshua, a Grade 1 DeBeck elementary student, returned home from a family vacation to the Philippines in February, only to be diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of leukemia. He has spent most of the last two months in hospital receiving chemotherapy.

Work cut out for describers during farcical Gateway play

T

he Richmond World Festival has been named the Most Outstanding Event in Canada by the country’s leading industry experts.

The honour was awarded at the 19th annual Canadian Event Industry Award Gala on March 31 in North York, Ontario.

The Canadian Event Industry Awards recognizes and celebrates the best achievements for event design, technology, marketing and production. It is the highest honour Canadian event professionals can achieve. Nominees were selected from hundreds of submitted entries in all disciplines of the event industry and judged by a panel of industry experts from across Canada.

Other nominees in the Most Outstanding category included landmark events from Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver.

The 2015 Richmond World Festival, produced by the City of Richmond and John Donnelly and Associates, attracted more than 25,000 people in its first year.

The city’s newest signature event featured five performance stages with 50 musical performances, 36 food trucks, 50 exhibitors and numerous sport demonstrations.

Planning is already underway for the 2016 Richmond World Festival being held on Saturday, Sept. 3.

magine watching a fast-paced play, packed full of rapid-fire wisecracks, double-takes, innuendo and farcical adultery.

Now imagine trying to describe it all live, as it unfolds, in great detail and with precision timing to someone who’s visually impaired.

That’s the task facing the professional describers gearing up to visualize with their words the action unfolding at the Gateway Theatre’s production of Don’t Dress for Dinner, which opened Thursday and will run to April 23.

Two of those performances, on Tuesday, April 12 at 1 p.m. and Friday, April 22 at 8 p.m., will have the luxury of a describer on the balcony, courtesy of Vancouver-based VocalEye Descriptive Arts.

People with visual impairments, who would normally struggle to fully enjoy the artistic delight of a live performance, can go along to the theatre — at a much reduced rate (a companion goes free) — pick up an FM receiver in the lobby and sit down and enjoy the show.

“We were the first organization in Canada to provide this service, it was at The Miracle Worker at the Vancouver Playhouse in 2009; it was the first described performance in the country,” said Steph Kirkland, VocalEye’s executive managing director.

“We’ve described for the Pride Parade, Bard on the Beach and the fireworks in Vancouver.”

For the Pride Parade, VocalEye had a list of participants, said Kirkland, then a team of two describers set up in Alexandra Park in Vancouver and when the parade came by, they described it through FM equipment to anyone who

wanted to listen to it through a receiver.

“We do this about 30 times a year in theatres,” said Kirkland, herself a trained describer.

“The describer will usually have three runs at it before they go live. A long run of shows is obviously better and if we’re able to access videos beforehand, that’s invaluable, as we can practise our descriptions with the timing of the actors; timing is everything.”

Kirkland said they first offered the service at the Gateway in 2010, but with no budget and very few staff to promote the service, the attendance was very low.

“The Gateway is now offering the best theatre rate out of all our theatre partners: half price and a free companion.”

As for the latest play itself, Don’t Dress for Dinner, Kirkland said a fast-paced farce with lots of humour will be a test for the describers, who will have to “be primed.”

here’s no question that in retirement you’ll see more of your partner — a lot more.

Of course that will depend on whether or not you both retire at the same time, or if one of you is still working. In my case, hubby Harvey is still working.

Sure, you love your spouse (most of the time), but let’s do the math. Chances are, for most of your married life at least one of you has worked outside the home. That takes up anywhere from seven to 14, or more, hours a day. Subtract sleep, travel to work time and other away time and in reality you see your spouse for probably six hours a day. When you retire, that figure can easily double, or triple.

Extended togetherness can cause even the happiest couples to fight. Add in projects you’re both working on, and you get to see the real person you married. One of you may be a very Type A personality and like to do everything perfectly. The other might be like Oscar from The Odd Couple — sloppy and messy. This could get on your nerves and drive you both crazy.

Which brings me to the topic of division of labour. When you retire, you and your spouse may need a relationship adjustment. Think

of it like a chiropractic treatment for your marriage. Responsibility for household tasks may get turned topsy-turvy, and one or both of you could feel frustrated. Household jobs may need to be shared differently now.

Compromise will be the new normal. So will bargaining: “Okay you get to do laundry if I get to do the cooking.” Or “I’ll pay the bills if you organize our trips.” The balance of power could shift and jobs once considered his, might now become yours. Or vice versa.

No matter what you decide, open and honest communication is key. Redefining your roles in your relationship might be a pleasantly organic process for some. For others, it could herald World War Three.

Bottom line is, people need to feel needed and useful. And if it means exchanging or sacrificing your long-held roles to get there, so be it. One or both spouses may need to seek out different avenues to feel useful.

Personally, I decided to find a new way to pull my weight around our place — cooking. From water burner to bread baker in 60 seconds. Harvey is very nervous. He’ll get used to it.

The point is, retirement is much more than a financial journey. It’s very much an emotional excursion… minus the tour guide.

So plan, plan, plan beforehand. And enjoy the trip.

ego is not just child’s play.

Robin Sather, a certified professional Lego builder, knows that well.

And thanks to a four-day Lego convention called Brick Can that he is organizing at the River Rock Show Theatre on April 21 – 24, fans, both young and old, will be able to celebrate the Danish toy that helped revolutionize constructive play when it was introduced in 1949.

Sather, now 50, remembers the first Lego set he received when he was about four years old.

It was a flea market purchase his mom made.

“It was a little plastic tub full of probably 100 bricks,” he said. “And I still have some, actually. And my love for Lego has never really stopped.

“It was always my favourite toy, and when I grew up I was always a Lego kid. Even into high school and college, when it was extremely uncool in the pre-Internet days, I thought I was the only one who continued to like Lego as an adult. And it kinda became a closet hobby.

“I never grew out of it and I never stopped building.”

It’s that allegiance to Lego that Sather, who lives in Abbotsford, said he is tapping into as Brick Can is the first convention of it’s kind here. Seattle has an annual show called Brick Con that is held in the fall, and Sather worked with organizers there to create a complimen-

tary event north of the border border.

“It’s been long overdue,” he said. “The adult fan clubs here, there’s three of them – the Vancouver Lego Club, Abbotsford Lego Users Group and Victoria Lego Users Group – all really wanted to do something for years and the pieces kinda came together.

“Everyone is super-stoked.”

Sather said he anticipates about 5,000 will attend over the four days.

The event will be divided into two parts.

The first two days of Brick Can are reserved for adult fans with a host of seminars, Lego games and displays from some talented Lego building fans.

“The event’s core is an adult fan convention,” Sather said. “So, we’ll have about 225 adult fans coming from all over Canada and the U.S. bringing extremely cool creations with them. And we’ll have a couple of days with all the kind of geeky Lego stuff you’d

expect adult fans to have ffun with.”

Sather added the River Rock Show Theatre will be transformed into a Lego Paradise with hundreds of displays on hand.

“Lots of people are registering their MOCs (My Own Creations) and we’ll have a huge train and town section, a lot of castle oriented stuff and a large art, sculpture and mosaic area.”

There will also be a child-sized Lego robot and a chance to enter the Lego Friends building contest.

The public will then be allowed in for the event’s final two days that will include the opportunity to build their own creations.

Those 12 and under attending will also go home with a free Lego kit Sather, as a certified Lego builder, has put together.

So how do you become a Lego pro?

Sather said the Lego company cherry picks people who are already doing interesting

things in the Lego fan community.

“I was looking for something that would indulge my fantasy of becoming a professional Lego builder without having to move to Denmark or some headquarters in the east. I wanted to stay in B.C,” he said.

So, he pitched Lego with the idea of hiring external professionals back in 2005, outlining a training and certification course that would qualify successful applicants to wear a Lego badge and have the freedom to embark on organizing regional events, festivals, fairs and full-blown conventions such as Brick Can. “They loved the idea and now there are 15 of us worldwide,” Sather said, who now works full time for Lego.

Asked why he thinks Lego has had such a long-lasting appeal, Sather said the toy helps foster creativity.

“Plus, it’s been around through much of peoples’ lives in North America and Europe, as well. It’s a touch point for a lot of people,” he said. “But the thing that really resonates for me is the fact it’s nearly infinitely creative in terms of what you can make. There are rules in the way that things connect. So, it’s a structured creativity.”

Lego also helps breaks down barriers, he said.

“You put a pile of bricks in front of anyone, of almost any age, and their fingers will automatically start making things happen. That’s quite remarkable, because it doesn’t happen necessarily with a pencil and blank sheet of paper or a lump of clay.”

Brick Can runs April 21 – 24 at the River Rock Show Theatre. Tickets are available through TicketMaster and cost $15 for those aged four and up.

That’s how Richmond School District secretary treasurer Mark De Mello summarizes the task ahead for both district staff and the Board of Education, as they decide what four or five schools to close and how those remaining open will get much-needed seismic remediation.

The process may mean schools slated to close could actually stay open for up to seven years.

Anne Chen, president of the Richmond District Parents Association (RDPA), said parent reaction to a board-approved shortlist of 16 schools under consideration for closure has been mixed.

“Some parents expected it and there were others who were surprised,” said Chen.

Perhaps no parents were more shocked than those at Diefenbaker elementary, noted Chen.

Parent Emi Dyck, Diefenbaker’s Parent Advisory Council (PAC) chair, is now in the midst of rounding up parents to inform them of the news and what the next steps are in the process, worried her Bulldogs will be shown the proverbial dog house.

“My initial reaction was feeling nauseous.

I knew every single school put on that list was put there objectively. I knew there were

actual reasons for being on that list. But it makes you feel gross when it’s your school, your neighbourhood and your community. I just feel sick,” said Dyck.

Diefenbaker parent Linda Wong raised concerns about special needs students, including her own Grade 2 daughter, being shuffled around.

Thompson Over at Bridge, Whiteside parent and RDPA Woodward member Andrew Scallion said he “wasn’t terribly surprised as there had been noises about Bridge before.”

However, “what surprised (parents) was the criteria and how they’re making this decision,” noted Scallion.

Schools considered for closure

n 95 per cent capacity threshhold

De Mello said the district has been directed — by order of the Ministry of Education — to close schools in order to bring the overall level of student occupancy to 95 per cent for the sake of efficiencies. Only until this is achieved will the provincial government pay for seismic remediation work on 25 of the district’s schools.

The 95 per cent threshold is something Richmond Teachers’ Association president Al Klassen has called “arbitrary” and a result of systemic underfunding of public schools from the provincial government.

“That’s a high bar. I don’t know any other industry or social service that requires that utilization rate,” said Klassen.

The board (nor any individual trustees) has not made any official public statements concerning the province’s demands.

When asked, board chair Debbie Tablotney stated: “As much as we may not like working within the 95 per cent, the reality is we must work cooperatively with the ministry.”

Klassen noted the closures will mean a few more efficiencies but also “slightly” more students per classroom. n ‘Unfair’ to French Immersion

A school was only considered for closure if neighbouring schools had the combined capacity to take in all the students. If that was the case, the district then assessed various other conditions, such as overall

enrollment, the number of students attending the school but not in the catchment, the number of students in the school’s catchment but not attending the school, operating costs and seismic upgrade needs.

French Immersion students were not included in the calculations as they are considered “portable,” according to De Mello.

This has Scallion questioning the decision-making. Scallion said because Bridge is French Immersion, not including such students “erases half our school population” and makes the school look underused, despite presently being over capacity.

“Bridge is set up for failure,” said Scallion.

De Mello said French Immersion schools will not be disadvantaged in the process.

He noted French students need to move as a cohort and, as such, they cannot be considered as part of the general student population of a school, which will likely need to be split up in various directions (to other nearby schools) when a school closes.

De Mello noted the process will not be perfect, as geography plays another important role. For instance, a school that borders water naturally has fewer adjacent catchments in which students can go to.

“So if you happen to be a school in the centre of Richmond . . . it is true there are more choices for where a student will be relocated,” noted De Mello.

Geography was a key factor in saving the highly underused Sea Island elementary, noted De Mello.

Not only do Sea Island’s neighbouring schools have no room, its catchment is broken up by the Fraser River.

“We haven’t done anything special for them and having to get across the bridge adds complexity,” explained De Mello.

Some on city council have pitched adding more multi-family units within single-family home neighbourhoods. De Mello was asked if adding more residential units in west and south Richmond could change projections and thus closure conditions.

“I think the short answer is, yes,” however, “we have so much excess capacity on the west side, it would take large changes to affect the final numbers.

“If something changed significantly enough and an influx of students came back in, I’m sure the board would be very open to reopening schools,” said De Mello.

As neighbourhoods densify, particularly in Downtown Richmond — from City Centre to Bridgeport and throughout the West Cambie area — so, too, will schools, case in point Anderson elementary and Brighouse. Talmey and Tomsett elementary schools are presently below capacity, but are projected to soon have extra wings added to them to accommodate growth. The over-capacity Cook elementary will also be expanded.

The district will need to build a new City Centre school for about 500 students, said De Mello. This will be paid for by selling some land from closed school sites, but the district hasn’t come to any conclusions yet and it has recommended to the board that real estate values not play a factor in closing any given school, noted De Mello.

“Some may be sold, some may be retained, I think. We always want to be able to look down the road and retain sites because land is such a valuable commodity,” said De Mello.

The decision to sell will come after the closure decisions, but saving green space will then become a factor, said De Mello.

“Many of our schools provide significant green space to the city. How that impacts the city, I’m not sure, so we’ll have to work that out,” said De Mello.

juggling act awaits

As if dealing with the unknown of a hot real estate market isn’t enough, De Mello and staff must also figure out how schools will be seismically upgraded.

In order to address the upgrades, the schools that are deemed “closed” are actually likely to stay open temporarily for up to seven years.

The seismic upgrades will be significant and take a school out of commission for a year or more. This task is likely going to lead to students being juggled between schools.

“We’re going to have to temporarily move students to one of the closed schools, remediate and move them back. The closed schools will be staging schools so they might be physically used for a few years,” said De Mello.

A scenario could exist where students are forced n Woodward elementary costs about two times the district average to operate to leave their closed school only to return for one more year and then be sent back to their seismically upgraded school.

De Mello noted some schools on the chopping block, such as Grauer, Gilmore, Bridge, Woodward and Thompson need so much seismic work done on them that it would be more cost-efficient to build a new school on the site. And just because major upgrades are needed doesn’t mean the school site will be shuttered. n Consultation

De Mello noted socio-economic factors, extracurricular activities and third-party organizations that use the schools will be factored into any recommendations.

Such issues will be sussed out during an upcoming round of public consultation, noted De Mello, who is aware of shortcomings of income reporting in the voluntary 2011 National Household Survey.

“There are other (socioeconomic) factors. We need to go back and look into them in more detail,” he noted.

As for the public consultation, the district is setting up school committees for parents.

Scallion said he hopes there will be more open houses than currently planned, after being disappointed by Monday’s “engineered” board meeting where the shortlist was accepted but parents weren’t able to ask all the questions they wanted to prior to a decision being made.

Klassen said the closures are sure to disrupt students, parents and teachers and the community at large.

Chen said she had hoped there would be more time for consultation, as PACs are now “scrambling” to get parent feedback come May. Chen said she hopes parents work together on the closures and she noted that all students and parents will be affected even if a school isn’t closed.

CURLING 17th annual Pacific International Cup

Celebrating the grassroots of curling

I

t’s a chance to recognize the heart and soul of one of Canada’s favourite winter pastimes with the Richmond Curling Club (RCC) providing the stage, starting next Wednesday.

While TSN and Sportsnet draw huge national TV audiences to watch the stars of today’s game battle for national and international bragging rights, along with cash prizes, the Pacific International Cup puts the spotlight on the club curlers who typically play in their own weekly leagues throughout the season.

It was back in 1998 when a group of curlers came up with the idea of launching a competition for club champions.

The Pacific Club Challenge was born and initially was limited only to men’s club champions from within the Pacific Coast Curling Association (PCCA).

It later became the B.C. Club Challenge and eventually included similar playdowns on Vancouver Island and in the Interior. In 2005, a women’s division was added too.

With strong support from

Curl BC, the Club Challenge continued to gain momentum and now includes six regional events. The various winners not only have bragging rights, they are invited to the Pacific International Cup as well.

It was 17 years ago when the PCCA launched the international division, providing another unique competition for the Club Challenge winners.

Invitations were initially extended to every curling association in the geographic proximity of the PCCA. The Canadian Curling Association got onboard and assisted with the event’s promotion, including a two-year commitment of providing an all-expenses paid trip to a curling competition in Japan.

Men’s teams from Gibsons and Vancouver finished third and first respectively.

The PIC women’s division was added in 2004 and international interest and representation continued to grow. Now there are a minimum 32 teams — 16 international and 16 from B.C. competing in men’s and women’s divisions each year.

The B.C. division winners now have the opportunity to also represent their province at the Travelers National Curling Club Championships, typically held each fall.

The PIC’s growing popularity has got to the point where the tournament com-

mittee even has to make some tough decisions on which rinks get to participate.

This year, the PIC committee received nominations from 14 regional associations for men’s teams and 13 for women. Due to time

constraints only 10 and eight respectively were selected.

Those international rinks will play off over four days to determine which two teams will advance to the PIC final to take on the B.C. division winners.

Would you spend more time on social media, go shopping one last time, go to your favourite restaurant and eat all you can? Would you reflect on your life in retrospect, recognize what really matters and spend your remaining time there?

Dr. Ira Byock, a palliative care physician wrote in his book, The Four Things That Matter Most, that those four things are what we need to say to our loved ones before we part: “Please forgive me,” “I forgive you,” “Thank you,” and “I love you.”

We are all human and imperfect. We hurt the people we love, and they

hurt us. We take one another for granted. We don’t always speak or act in loving ways.

If we knew our time together was limited, we might be kinder, more patient and loving. The truth is, our lives are indeed limited, and few of us know how much time we have left. In fact, the only ones who know this have been diagnosed with a terminal condition.

My mother died suddenly in April 13 years ago.

I was fortunate that my profession had taught me how precious life was and that I was able to give back to my mom the love that she gave me. Yet I have often thought of how her kind and generous presence would have enriched my life and those of my children if she was still here.

When grieving, I recalled every word from those who offered comfort. One patient said that to die suddenly is a good way to go.

Ten years later, that patient would die from end-stage congestive heart failure; without warning or in palliative care. Neither is easy for loved ones.

Last year, my dear aunt passed away in palliative care at St. Michael’s Hospice. She was surrounded by her loving family, and we all had the opportunity

to express our love and gratitude for all that she had done for each of us.

Palliative care focuses on the comfort of the patient suffering from a life-limiting condition. The aim is the best possible quality of life, even in the final stages of illness.

It takes a team to attend not only to the physical aspects of care, but just as importantly the psychological and spiritual. Patients with their families and friends are supported by a team that includes nurses, doctors and volunteers.

Though we cannot predict how our lives will unfold, we can live with the end in mind. We can invest in our most important relationships with the gift of each day and each moment together. We can stop wasting our time, doing things that don’t matter, holding grudges or putting ourselves before others. In the end, what can we hold on to?

We can say what needs to be said. We can use each moment more mindfully. We can express all the love we have in our hearts because it’s only worth something when we give it away. We can’t take it with us.

The winner will be showered with praise from his awestruck colleagues (but probably not), the loser subject to eternal shame, ridicule and public scorn (but maybe just for an hour or so).

Now in the second week of the challenge, things are already getting ugly.

“First of all, Collin — um — doesn’t have the will power to last,” says Akimow. “He’s also out of the gate way too fast, he’s going to burn out. There’s no question in my mind.

With those two things alone, I’m going to win in a big way.

True, Neal does get his cardio fix seven days a week. And

there was that unfortunate treadmill incident at the gym where fatigue caused him to slow down in the eighth minute.

The slight change of pace had him flying off the machine and splayed out on his back in front of the lunchtime crowd.

A week in, and he’s already shown blood, sweat, and (probably some, though he wouldn’t admit) tears.

But the real battleground is in the office. It’s a minefield of treats. The past week already had the opponents dodging a carrot cake, a box of Nanaimo bars and pizza. Although it should be noted the pizza was ordered by Akimow and placed directly on Neal’s desk, who managed to resist — to the benefit of the other employees (that pizza was gone within a half hour).

“My problem is I have a horrible diet,” says Neal, who stays active playing hockey and skiing, but lists chips and chocolate bars as only a few of his temptations. “But I’m dedicated to eating well because of the contest. I’m planning ahead now, counting calories within reason, reading labels, and trying not to eat any sugar, carbs or drink beer.”

Unfortunately for Neal, Akimow’s dirty pizza trick wasn’t the last. He’s even promising a secret weapon — not revealed at time of print — which he’s planning on bringing out around week six or seven.

“There’s nowhere I’d rather be less,” he says.

Luckily, he’s been set up with a personal trainer from the new City Centre Community Centre gym.

“I don’t want to bombard him with something that’s not sustainable for him,” says Akimow’s coach A.J. Aguasin. “He’s been doing really well, he’s been listening to everything I say.”

Aguasin has Akimow doing full, total body movements to give him an overall lean frame. During the week, he’s working out three days with a focus on weight training.

And for one day over the weekend, Akimow is to do cardio, either on the treadmill or running outside.

The sessions are about one hour long, including a warm-up and cool down.

“A.J. has a good plan,” says Akimow.

“He’s been phenomenal, checking in all the time. It’s really encouraging, really positive.

He’s very dedicated.

“I’m assuming he doesn’t want to lose the challenge either,” Akimow quips. “He’s very competitive, as well. I would imagine he wants to beat Gabrielle, be the king of the trainers at the gym.”

sin also has Akimow setting personal goals every week. Last week’s was to drink eight glasses of water a day. This week is to get six to eight hours of sleep every night.

“It’s so he gets a better quality of life, as well,” says Aguasin. “These things definitely affect overall fitness, you see the best results this way.”

Aguasin plans to make weekly adjustments to the program, ramping it up as they get closer to the challenge finale. His tip for Akimow is to stay consistent and visualize the end goal.

“There might be a few cold beers on Collin’s desk or anything it takes,” Akimow says. “I’m not adverse to dirty tricks.

He will crumble.”

Neal also plans to play some head games, though he favours subtlety over trickery.

“My goal is to take it as seriously as possible, so that when those first numbers come in, Rob will be so demoralized,” he says. “He’s going to be totally demoralized after weigh-in, that he’s just going to give up.”

“Collin’s chances are really good right now,” says the coach and personal trainer.

“He’s way more athletic than he led me to believe. On the first day, he whipped out this perfect beautiful lunge. It’s really been headache-free with him.”

Payne, who trains at the new City Centre Community Centre gym, has designed a workout for Neal around interval training for the first five weeks, which she believes is the most effective way to lose weight.

Neal gets in some sort of cardio every day, although she’s careful he’s not overdoing it.

Four times a week, he does weight training, targeting his legs and arms twice a week each. The other three days are weight-free for more fun cardio workouts, such as a 20-minute jump rope challenge between Neal and his wife at home.

“I basically want his body to know it’s not resting now,” she laughs.

As the challenge continues, Payne will target more muscle mass, focusing on heavier weights and more weight training during the second half.

“She’s awesome, she’s really kicking my butt right now,” says Neal. “I can already see the difference, I feel stronger.”

Payne’s biggest tip for Neal is to make sure he continues to get enough rest and water. Acknowledging his fast-paced job, she says the key is downtime so he’s ready to face the next day.

And she’s got some words for his opponent too, quashing any rumours of a possible burnout from her client.

“I think Rob’s looking a bit too laid back and relaxed at the gym,” she says. “He’s gonna have to really amp it up if he wants to beat Collin.”

Volunteer boosts flower power MATTHOEKSTRA Contributor

A

t this time of year, Ben Edelstein takes time out of his busy schedule to smell the flowers. Daffodils in particular.

Edelstein, a 25-year-old Steveston resident, has been volunteering with the Canadian Cancer Society for more than a decade and has long been involved with the society’s annual Daffodil Month campaign, an April fundraiser for the fight against cancer.

“It’s a lot of fun for me,” he says over iced chai at a crowded but quiet No. 3 Road coffee house. “I feel a sense of accomplishment when I (volunteer).”

A day earlier, Edelstein spent five hours selling pins and fresh flowers in Steveston — over and above his current volunteer role with the cancer society as pin distribution leader. Edelstein is responsible for the daffodil pins sold by retailers around town. Money raised through pin sales helps fund cancer research and support services.

Edelstein is an Israeli-born Hugh Boyd grad, who spent much of his life here in Richmond, although family moves meant changing elementary schools several times.

“I think it really forced me to come out of my shell. After the second or third school, it forces you to connect real quick.”

He studied at Langara College for six years — spending the first two in the arts on mom’s advice before graduating with a bachelor of business administration in 2014.

“I loved every minute of it,” he says of his

post-secondary path. “I don’t regret a single minute of (studying) arts. It has made me a much more well-rounded person — doing psychology, and philosophy and sociology...it brings that human element into business. A lot of business courses you take are numbers, and they’re not people.”

In his final year, he served as a student union council member. The experience didn’t exactly turn him into a career politician. More memorable was participating in business case competitions in which teams of students tackle a problem and try to produce an answer good enough to impress industry judges. Success in Langara business student battles led to external competitions, and ultimately a contest in which Edelstein served as CEO. “It was the absolute time of my life — absolutely riveting,” he said. “A lot of times when you’re doing a degree you don’t get a chance to put what you learn in class into action.

That was an opportunity for me to show and demonstrate and flex that academic muscle.

Nothing validates the education you get more than when a third party who is in that industry turns to you and says, ‘That’s a good answer.’”

Today, Edelstein is a business and marketing co-ordinator by day. By night, he’s a participant in Urban Rec — a club that offers organized co-ed team play of various sports.

Edelstein plays four. Somehow he finds time to volunteer — with Variety, the Vancouver Marathon, Operation Red Nose and the cancer society.

“I like making an impact, I like giving back.

I think I’ve been exceedingly fortunate in

life...because of that, if I have a weekend off, I like to keep busy.”

Volunteering made easy online, thanks to new database Philip Raphael

olunteers. Communities could not get along as well as they do without them. And in Richmond there is a wealth of people willing to lend a hand for just about every cause or occasion.

It’s a community asset that is sometimes overlooked, but never underappreciated, said Ed Gavsie, president and CEO of Richmond Cares Richmond Gives (RCRG) which recently rolled out its volunteer opportunities database to help match those wanting to lend a hand with a specific activity or interest they have.

“We in Richmond are fortunate to have one of the leading communities in Canada in terms of volunteer hours given,” said Gavsie ahead of National Volunteer Week, which runs April 10-16.

For example, the Richmond Christmas Fund had 187 volunteers who contributed 3,130 hours. Local seniors’ programs at-

tracted 70 volunteers, who provided more than 5,000 hours of their time.

To mark National Volunteer Week RCRG will have a ceremony at its office at Caring Place.

“And we, as an organization, are sending out thank you cards to all of the volunteers out there,” Gavsie said.

The new database, which was custom designed for RCRG, makes it a lot easier for non-profits to post their volunteer opportunities online, Gavsie said, adding the usage since it went live last September has been impressive.

Currently, there are 70 local non-profit organizations using the database and a total of 56 volunteer positions listed.

Since it went live, there have been 6,400 unique visitors that have generated 65,200 page views.

The site (Volunteer.RCRG.org) is divided into two sections. One is titled I care about most … which allows the visitor to choose from a variety of areas — from animal welfare to sports and recreation.

“People can go into the site and choose a particular cause they want to volunteer for and can narrow it right down. Then, those (volunteer) opportunities will be listed,” Gavsie said.

he next exciting part of my season has gotten underway, finally.

After my last post about being a bit down, things have started to turn around.

I kept things simple and listened to my body, backing off when needed and it’s paying off.

Since then, I’ve also travelled up to Flagstaff, Arizona, which sits at 2,100 metres above sea level.

I will be in Flagstaff for three weeks training along side a few Australian and New Zealand race walkers and my two Canadian teammates.

Along with us there are swarms of endurance athletes from all around the world, including 35 Canadians, looking to gain an edge by coming to altitude.

So, what exactly is that

edge we are all looking for?

Endurance exercise relies on readily available oxygen to make the energy that your muscles use to move you forward.

In Richmond, at or occasionally below sea level, our air is rich with oxygen making it easy for our lungs to grab it from the air with each breath and pass on to your muscles via your blood.

While traveling in your blood, that oxygen binds to hemoglobin and the more hemoglobin you have, the more oxygen you can transport.

When you come up to altitude, the air is thinner and with each breath, less oxygen is passed to your muscles via your blood.

Immediately, this has negative effects on training, your effort to do simple things

It will be a Richmond derby Saturday afternoon as B.C. Soccer’s 63rd annual Coastal Cup Championships reaches the quarter-final stage.

In U18 boys “A” cup action, the Richmond United 1998s and 1999s will square off 3 p.m. at Hugh Boyd.

The 98s are looking to cap off an impressive run through youth soccer in style, that includes a Coastal Cup title and Provincial Cup runner-up finish at the U16 level. Richmond narrowly missed out on a capturing the Metro Selects League championship, finishing three points back of the Burnaby Lakers, with a 5-0-2 record in the “A” flight. The 99s were at 1-2-4 but their only win came against the 98s back in late January.

The 99s have also enjoyed plenty of success over the years, winning the Coastal Cup back at U13 and finishing second a year later.

They reached the semi-final stage last season at U16.

On the girls “A” Cup side, Richmond FC will be looking to continue its outstanding

campaign in the U15 draw when Vancouver visits Boyd on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Richmond finished regular season play with a 13-6-3 record and was tied for top spot in the 12-team division. That included a pair of wins over Vancouver, including a 2-0 triumph back on Feb. 14.

In Coastal “B” Cup playdowns, the Richmond Ravens have advanced in the U18 girls draw with a 3-1 home field win over the Vancouver Roadrunners last week. The Ravens will be back at Boyd again this Sunday when North Coquitlam Rebels visit at 11 a.m.

Meanwhile a pair of Richmond F.C. teams remain in the hunt in the boys “B” cup playdowns.

The U13 Rangers doubled Cliff Avenue United 4-2 and will also have home field advantage when Surrey United Rangers visit Boyd on Saturday at 9 .a.m.

The U15 Athletics will be in action on the same field soon after (11:30 a.m.) in their quarter-final tilt with Killarney Phoenix. The Athletics advanced with a 3-2 win over Surrey’s Central City Breakers United.

The teams are not only battling for Coastal bragging rights but berths into the Provincial “A” and “B” Cup Championships.

Richmond FC alumni signs with Whitecaps Residency atrick Metcalfe will be back in familiar territory on Saturday as the newest member of the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency U18 team.

The Richmond Youth Soccer product was recently signed for the balance of the United States Soccer Academy Development League (USSADL) season and potentially beyond. He is one of 16 1998-born players on the roster that also features five more from the 1997 age group and talent from across the country.

The Whitecaps will be at the Minoru Oval to take on the U18 Seattle Sounders at 1 p.m. The regular season schedule continues until the end of May. The sudden change of path in Metcalfe’s soccer career came after a successful trial last month. He was in the midst of his fifth and final season with Fusion F.C.— the Richmond/Vancouver hosted club in the B.C. Premier Soccer League — and had already made a verbal commitment to join the UBC Thunderbirds next fall.

He has always been one of the top players in B.C. for his age group and that’s reflected on being selected three consecutive years

travel schedule. The Whitecaps were in Portland last weekend for just one game and still have a couple of trips to California next month, including a much-anticipated match at the StubHub Centre to take on the U18 LA Galaxy. Vancouver currently owns a 131-10 record and trails first place Sacramento FC by just one point in the Northwest Division with a playoff spot comfortably in hand.

How Metcalfe performs over remainder of the season will determine the next step with the MLS club. There are basically three options — remain with the U18 team into the 2016-17 USSADL season, sign a professional contract with the Whitecaps FC2 USL team or be released.

That decision will also determine his status at UBC where he has also been accepted into the Arts program.

“Getting offered a pro contract is definitely the goal,” Metcalfe added. “Before Whitecaps FC2 it was just too big of jump for many from a physical standpoint to go from U18 Residency to the MLS. Now there is at least another development stage.

“Whether I can be with the Whitecaps and still go to UBC part-time I’m not sure about right now. I am willing to just focus on soccer for one year if that is what it takes.”

It’s a potential tough decision Metcalfe would be thrilled to make.

for the provincial team program. However, it was his switch from fullback to centre midfield which eventually got the attention of the Whitecaps’ scouting staff.

He had three training sessions to show he belonged. For a player seeking to take his career as far as it could go, it was an opportunity of a lifetime.

“There was definitely a bit of pressure to show what I could do,” chuckled the Grade 12 student at Vancouver College. “I just said to myself to keep it simple and do what I normally would do. I also knew they would be watching me closely to see how nervous I would be in that environment.”

Metcalfe got a hint things were going well when he was asked after the second session if his school would be able to accommodate the early afternoon weekday training schedule. By the final practice, he sat down with the entire coaching staff and was offered a spot in the all-expenses paid program.

Typically, Whitecaps Residency players must attend Burnaby Central Secondary School which is near the training grounds and offers a flexible schedule. Since it’s so late in the school year, Metcalfe will get to stay and graduate at VC, thanks to the support of his father who picks him up at 1 p.m. each day for the trek to Burnaby.

Record swim sends Thomas to Summer Olympics

lazing to a personal best time by nearly a full second, Richmond’s Noemie Thomas earned a spot in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games with a runner-up finished in the 100-meter butterfly at the Canadian Trials on Tuesday night at the Pan Am Sports Centre in Toronto.

The 20-year-old sophomore at Cal-Berkeley covered the distance in 57.02 seconds — the fourth fastest time in the world this year — to finish just behind

ichmond Minor Hockey Association’s Pee Wee C1 Rangers, coached by Nick Steadman and Peter Thackwray, finished off their amazing season with a fantastic showing at RMHA’s own Sheraton Spring Classic Hockey Tournament.

The Rangers consisting of Josh Higo, Kai Samson, Bruce Chan, Jaden Neufeld, Justin Brower, Geoffrey Bian, Marcus Zeledon, Marcel Ahmed, Vikram Sarkaria, Jackson Thackwray and Ali Keshvani, continued their winning streak with triumphs over Prince George 9-0, Coquitlam 4-2, Saanich 7-1, Surrey 10-1.

Although missing one of their defensive players for the entire tournament and another blueliner for the semi-finals, the Rangers were still able to grind through the tournament playoffs, beating Richmond Peewee C2, but ended up losing in the final to their rival Richmond Peewee C3 team to place second.

The silver medal finish caps a terrific campaign that earlier included winning the North Vancouver Winter Tournament and capturing the Pacific Coast regular season and playoff banners. The Rangers’ success can be attributed to the hard work ethic, excellent teamwork and outstanding

He is survived by his partner of 17 years Bertha, children Cindy and Derrick(Charlie), and grandchildren Tallon and Sadie. Jim was born in Abbotsford but spent most of his life in Richmond B.C. He moved with his family to Coquitlam in 1990, returning to Richmond 8 years later where he resided until his passing. He will be remembered by family and friends for his quick wit, great sense of humour and the ability to make people laugh.
