ast Friday we decided to make our front page for this Friday a feature on LGBTQ rights. The issue was timely with the province amending the Human Rights Code to include discrimination of transgender people. Locally, school trustee Sandra Nixon has been banging the drum about creating a more inclusive school policy. And, of course, many gay and gay-supporting Richmondites will be heading to Vancouver Sunday to take in one of the biggest pride parades in North America.

But the thing that really piqued our interest was the fact West Richmond Community Centre was hosting what they called a Rainbow Social. While it matters what’s happening elswhere, as a community paper our goal is to speak to those issues from a local perspective, to see our place in the larger context as well as explore how global issues play out at home.

To that end, we looked forward to connecting with organizers and participants of the Pride Social, but…well… it appeared the feelings were less than mutual. Yes, a Rainbow Social would be happening; no, you can’t talk to any participants; no, you can’t take a picture; no, we don’t have all that much to say about this.

One got the sense that, although the city was hosting this event, it didn’t exactly want the world to know about it. I suspect if this was the Maritime Festival, we would have had no end of opportunities for photos and interviews.

I appreciate there can be issues of privacy, but it seemed to me the cool reception had more to do with the city trying to walk a fine line between providing support for some, while not offending others.

In the midst of all this, I went for a workout at the City Centre Community Centre. On the advertising monitor in the gym there was an ad for the Rainbow Social. Just a few steps away are double doors that look into the foyer of the centre. Facing back is a life-sized poster promoting Trinity Western University. TWU is a Christian-based school that has taken a very clear stance in opposition to gay rights.

By partnering with TWU, which bought the property and had it redeveloped to house both the centre and the school, the city was able to save money. But there’s a cost.

The point being, politicians know all about compromise. They know people have differing opinions; they also know who pays for what. What Richmond politicians could use a refresher on is the fact there are as many LGBTQ folks here as anywhere else. They deserve the same services, support and respect as any other group. It’s great we have the Rainbow Social, but it’s crazy we are so fearful and so far behind other Canadian cities when it comes to flying the rainbow flag.

Birth bumping Onni site a case of Reality check needed about exploitation poor development Dear Editor, Re: “Birth Bumping a 1% problem, at best,” Letters July 27.

Letter writer Mark Lee had my interest with the statistics that he provided about the number of non-resident births that are occurring in B.C. But then he undermined any perceptions I might have first developed about his motivation in writing the letter and the validity of his data when he concluded with the phrases “project fear.”

I assume this refers to the fact that Canadians, like those in many other countries in the world, want to ensure that they are not being exploited in any way by non-citizens and “the Western world,” which one could be excused for thinking could be a sort of code phrase for something that begs more precise definition and clarification.

It is my understanding, for example, that countries such as Korea, Japan and Malaysia are also concerned about some of the same things we are in relation to foreign ownership of property and non-resident births. And the last I looked they are not part of “the Western world.”

And if they are participants in this “project fear” (project, by the way, is defined as a carefully planned collaborative enterprise) that Mr. Lee alludes to he might consider widening the scope of his perceptions and designations because this “project” whatever it is, doesn’t seem to be confined to only us “westerners.”

Objectivity begets validity, but it’s always counterproductive when questions about the former cast doubt on the latter.

Dear Editor, Re: “Steves turning Onni into four-letter word,” Letters, July 27.

I found a recent letter from Terry Thorsteinson rather amusing.

First of all, and most importantly, Harold Steves was one of the councillors who voted against Walmart, as noted by the editor.

I think Terry should, perhaps, research Richmond council meetings, town hall meetings, and development plans during the past 40 years.

The simple fact is, Terry should, perhaps, direct his frustration at the sitting mayor and particular councillors for his venting regarding the Onni gong show, and that’s exactly what that project is — nothing less than a poorly executed development with a 60 per cent vacancy since it was completed.

As for job creation in Steveston, Terry, how about the job creation of the movie industry such as Once Upon A Time?

And what about the inconvenience to businesses, customers, and tourists during the summer months due to parking restrictions, blocked roads etc.

If Harold Steves had had his plan implemented, we would have a light rail connection from the Canada Line to Steveston, moving people directly from cruise ships and other parts of Vancouver directly to the business core without a vehicle.

I suppose in hindsight that made too much common sense... Right Terry?

Dear Editor, Re: “Vacancy/non-resident tax too bureaucratic: Brodie,” News, July 22.

It seems Mayor Malcolm Brodie is following the same playbook as Finance Minister Mike de Jong and Premier Christy Clark. When it comes to the white-hot real estate market, that is totally out of sync with wages, they all pretend, “nothing to see here, we’ve seen this all before and it will sort itself out eventually.”

Mayor Brodie has presided over a city with a wild west development attitude, permitting the wholesale destruction of perfectly good homes and yards. Homes, some barely 10 years old, are torn down and replaced by 4,000 squarefoot (or larger) mansions in neighbourhoods where homes half that size is normal.

The sky-high house prices and rents apparently are due to simple supply and demand economics. How many hundreds of condos have been added to the supply in Richmond in the last 10 years under Brodie’s watch?

Has that quenched demand and lowered home prices?

People are purchasing multi-million dollar homes yet have incomes below the poverty line. How is that possible? Some Richmond neighbourhoods are 50 per cent empty, where houses are used as an investment rather than as a home.

These are not symptoms of healthy, cyclical market forces. Mayor Brodie cannot pretend that he has seen this type of activity before. He also states, “It worries me when governments intervene in market forces.”

This out of control, reckless real estate market was created by government. The problems associated with it are exacerbated by governments pretending these activities are perfectly normal. It is about time Mayor Brodie looked out his office window. Or maybe he should take a walk around his neighbourhood.

No plans to dredge river: Port

Small changes can ease traffic

Dear Editor, Re: “Metro board refuses to accept Massey bridge,” News, July 1.

I am writing to provide clarity about the role of the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority in the provincial government’s plans for the George Massey Tunnel replacement project, in response to recent comments covered in the Richmond News that are inaccurate.

The Province of British Columbia leads the George Massey Tunnel replacement project and consulted with us on proposed design criteria, primarily because the port authority has navigational jurisdiction of the waterway and is therefore required to ensure any overhead or underwater structures do not impede current or future shipping.

Regarding comments the port authority aims to accommodate larger vessels on the Fraser River, including tankers, the port authority does not decide what goods and commodities Canada trades.

Our role is to ensure goods are moved safely, efficiently and sustainably. Any proposal for larger vessels would come from proponents other than the port authority, and would be subject to various federal and provincial regulatory and permitting processes.

Removing the tunnel in favour of the proposed bridge will not significantly change the size of vessels that are able to use the channel. The proposed bridge would be the same height above the water as the existing Alex Fraser Bridge, so the maximum vessel height that can be accommodated upriver of the bridge

Dear Editor, The City of Richmond is missing a huge opportunity to greatly improve bus service.

Engineers are currently resurfacing the four-lane overpass of Bridgeport Road over Hwy. 91, near IKEA, at a cost of more than $1 million. Anyone unlucky enough to use that stretch of road during the morning, and especially the afternoon, commute knows how nightmarish it can be.

The lines of traffic to access the overburdened Knight St. bridge often stretch as far as the eye can see, in every lane.

Almost.

Highway 91 running under the overpass usually is at a standstill. Ditto the eastbound curb lane of Bridgeport, choked with vehicles crossing the overpass to curl around the on-ramp onto the bridge.

Commercial traffic flows steadily across the eastbound centre lane. Westbound traffic leading approaching the overpass is choked with commuters and trucks exiting the Viking Way industrial area onto the bridge.

But the westbound lanes actually crossing the overpass are . . . empty! There’s barely enough traffic to warrant one lane, let alone two. That, in the middle of rush hour, is both an anomaly — and an opportunity.

Buses crossing the Knight St. Bridge get stuck with all the other traffic. They fall behind schedule, connections are missed, and passengers from Metrotown (the 430) to the corners of Richmond in Ironwood (405) and Steveston (407) are

Other impediments to larger vessels are the depth of the navigation channel, the width, which does not allow very large vessels to turn, and other structures such as utilities that cross under the Fraser River at shallower depths than the tunnel that also prevent substantial deepening of the channel.

There are currently no plans to address these constraints and to deepen the navigation channel. The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority continues to facilitate an active dredging program which will maintain the current channel characteristics, and ensure the economic activity important to users and to Canada continues.

left to stand and wonder when, or if, their bus is coming. Not only that, but more buses have to be added into the mix to compensate, which is costly for taxpayers.

But if westbound traffic on the overpass only requires one lane, the other could be made into a queue-jumper for buses to turn directly onto the bridge.

Some might say “why should buses get special treatment?” But a lot of motorists would switch to transit if those buses weren’t caught up in the gridlock.

More people on the buses would mean less single-occupant cars, easing the congestion.

Best of all, not being stuck in traffic would mean fewer buses needed to do the same amount of work.

That savings would quickly recoup the small outlay needed to build the priority measure; repainting the lane configuration on the overpass plus digging up and paving a small section of grass along the Knight Bridge on-ramp.

We’d get better transit and save money in one fell swoop.

This is the sort of small, but effective common-sense measure that (along with countless other similar things that cry out to be done) could play a large role in dispelling the cynicism of commuters and taxpayers who only hear from politicians and planners that billion dollar megaprojects are what’s needed.

And what easier time to do it than when the road is already dug up?

In 2012 the property sold for $898,000 with an older home sitting on it. In late 2014 Cheema (and Harpreet Cheema) applied for a building permit for a new house with a construction value of $414,000 and then applied to the city to remove the tree.

Cheema was denied and a letter of understanding was signed with the city considering it wasn’t the first time such a request had been made, noted Townsend.

“The applicant was told to retain the tree and ensure any work around it would ensure its continued health,” said Townsend.

But this February, the city commenced enforcement action and issued Cheema a

$3,000 fine for unauthorized pruning, after what Townsend described as “fairly steady” contact between the two parties over the past year regarding the protection of the tree.

The new house is now listed for sale for $3.68 million. Cheema has been involved in at least two other recent detached home developments, according to city permit records. This May, his company Calbric Homes Inc. applied for a demolition permit at 7740 Alouette Court. Last year, he built a new home at 7333 Bridge Street. There, two large and otherwise healthy mature evergreens are showing visible signs of dying following the construction of the new home.

The News attempted to call numbers listed under Jasvir Cheema. One man with the same name replied, stating he was a builder in Richmond but has never owned or developed property on Gibbons Drive.

Nearby resident Mira Williams said this one specific incident is symptomatic of a bigger problem.

“Every time someone takes something that isn’t theirs from our neighbourhood without any consequence for how others feel about it, it changes things forever. I live a couple blocks away and on our street alone, numerous times, after hours, on city property, or under the guise of new development, people try to skirt the rules,” said Williams, noting six “magnificent” firs were cut down on nearby city property after being sabotaged.

“The changes in the 10 short years have been phenomenal. I mean, the deforestation of our street is unreal,” she said.

Siperko said he was “livid” and as a builder worried about the reputation of good homebuilders.

Siperko wants the city to start banning bylaw violators.

“Is he a registered builder? Or is he one of these ‘homeowner built’ guys? The city lets that fly under the radar. It’s baloney.

“We have to pay our fees to be a registered builder. It’s supposed to mean something. It’s uncanny what’s going on in this city,” said Siperko.

He speculated that the owner wanted the tree to come down to increase the property value of the home. But Siperko believes it’s an “urban myth” that Chinese buyers — for whom many builders say such homes are built for and marketed toward — don’t like trees. If anything it’s the opposite, he said, noting he never needs to cut down mature trees on his own projects.

“On a $3 million home, you think they care?” quipped Lichtmann.

Furthermore, Williams wants the city to replace felled trees with the same or similar species, noting the six firs were “replaced with spindly little non-evergreen trees.”

Coun. Bill McNulty witnessed the violations take place last week (the pruner ignored him) after being asked by residents to visit the site. He said he agrees the fines need to be stiffer.

“I was livid . . . That tree was a piece of art.”

He suggested in this case the fine ought

to be what the city arborists consider to be the value of the tree.

McNulty said he also wants the city to be more vigilant in replanting the same large species in neighbourhoods. He said the city will need to hire more bylaw enforcement staff, as well.

City staff are expected to present council with a review of the tree protection bylaw this fall.

Everyone agreed the tree, as it stands, should remain.

“It should stay. It should stay and maybe put a plaque on it — this is what happens when you butcher a tree,” said Siperko.

“This whole project is fraught with difficulty and while I’m a realist and a pragmatist, I am not prepared to say this project is in the books. It’s an illthought-out project,” said Brodie, repeating concerns that the bridge plan was moved ahead at the request of Port of Vancouver.

However, if Johnston’s assumption is right, the key concern for the city at this point, according to the report, is the loss of farmland along No. 5 Road and the impact on the park.

Coun. Harold Steves said the city plans on investing millions of dollars in services for farming the land.

Coun. Carol Day suggested the city force the provincial government to legally expropriate the land.

Brodie, a lawyer, wasn’t expressly opposed to the concept but said he didn’t think there would be much

support from the religious groups that own the No. 5 Road “backlands” to join in a collective effort, considering many will be getting paid to get rid of a “headache” While the city attempts to enforce farming on the back third of the properties much of the land is unfarmed.

If need be, councillors want to see the highway widening take place on the east side, as opposed to along the backlands.

“Hopefully this will be a talking point and negotiation we can actually win,” said Coun. Derek Dang.

osé María Narváez was only 23 when he became the first European to navigate the Georgia Strait, but most people are unaware of this, says a Steveston-based writer.

In Jim McDowell’s latest book, Uncharted Waters: The Explorations of José Narváez, he provides a biography of Narváez’s contribution in charting what is now called the Salish Sea. In the book, McDowell explains how Narváez became the first European to explore Juan the Fuca Strait in 1789 and how, two years later, he proved there is a waterway separating what is now called Vancouver Island and mainland British

Columbia. He was also the first European to sail into the Burrard Inlet, Fraser River and Boundary Bay, in search of the elusive Northwest Passage. The Spanish names he gave to various landmarks were changed after the British explorers arrived, 11 months later, using his maps. Isla Zepeda became Point Roberts and Isla de Langara became Point Grey.

“He never received much recognition because it is the dominating country that writes the history,” McDowell said, adding Narváez was a first mate, not a captain, and Saturna Island was named after his schooner, the Santa Santurnina.

Unchartered Waters is actually McDowell’s second book about Narváez.

In 1998, McDowell published José María Narváez: The Forgotten Explorer, in the United States, but that book focused on Narváez’s transcribed journal, detailing his voyage to the Aleutian Islands in 1788.

McDowell decided to revisit Narváez because there was more to the man’s life. After charting the west coast, he sailed to the Philippines, while serving in the Spanish Navy and he later settled in Guadalajara, Mexico, became an elected official shortly after that country’s independence from Spain.

“Narváez was forgotten, overlooked and taken for granted as someone with no significance here,” McDowell said.

“History is about shifting perspectives. Getting read-

ers to look at a different point of view.”

And it seems McDowell succeeded in doing that.

Earlier this year, Unchartered Waters won the 2016 Independent Publisher silver medal award for best regional, non-fiction.

Unchartered Waters is McDowell’s fifth book, which is available at local bookstores and online at ronsdalepress.com. His previous books include, The Story of Warrior-Businessman Yoshiro Fujimura, Hamatsa: The Enigma

f you are not fortunate enough to “jet” away this summer you can still get a fun glimpse of jolly old England right here at home. Aberdeen Centre is featuring its London Calling exhibition with a number of unique things to see, and it’s top of the News’ three things to do this weekend.

London Calling: Until Sept. 5: Aberdeen Centre’s London Calling brings “Blighty” to Richmond with a trio of special exhibits that showcase the great city of London.

First of all, there’s the massive sculpture recalling the famous tower clock housing “Big Ben” that stands next to Westminster Bridge. Built entirely from Pez candy dispensers, the seven-foot-high sculpture earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records earlier this summer, said mall spokeswoman Joey Kwan.

Then there’s a pair of London’s landmarks – the London Eye and Tower Bridge – all made from Pez candy. (1) Peel the white radish and cut it into pieces.

(2) Chop the pork shoulder into pieces and put them in boiling water for 5 minutes. Remove the pork and rinse them until cold.

(3) Heat up 2 tablespoons of cooking oil and put into slices of ginger, shallots and garlic until fragrant. Fry the pork shoulder with seasoning until cooked. Simmer for 40 minutes.

(4) Add white radish and stew the pork shoulder for another 15-20 minutes. Serve.

A

small gathering of a few dozen people Thursday evening at West Richmond community centre marked the extent of LGBT pride celebrations in Richmond this summer. The quiet, informal and intergenerational “rainbow social” was marked by some refreshments and games organized by older adults in the neighbourhood.

Meanwhile, this Sunday, Vancouver is set to host more than 600,000 people for its annual Vancouver Pride Parade, celebrating gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender rights. The event will be a boon for local businesses, pulling in an extra $20 millionplus on the day, according to a Tourism Vancouver estimate. Smaller public parties using earmarked civic funding have already happened in Surrey and Abbotsford. New Westminster will shut down its downtown core to celebrate such rights on Aug. 13.

What else is happening in Richmond?

“Not a lot, really,” said Alan Hill, the City of Richmond’s diversity coordinator.

However, “we’re certainly there to support West Richmond through promotion, community resources, and any practical way,” he said.

Hill is tasked to receive community input on social events that meet the needs of

diverse groups across a broad spectrum.

He believes Richmond, as a community on the whole, has been part of the change to accept the LGBTQ community, although some from within the LGBTQ community may differ on just how much, if at all, Richmondites have shaped the region’s relatively progressive views.

“It became clear that there was an LGBTQ community out there that wanted its needs maybe a little more clearly expressed,” said Hill, who said he is witnessing progress from the grassroots level.

“I think people are becoming more aware there are opportunities and perhaps (Richmond) is a safer place than it used to be, certainly. We’re there to listen and support people. There is a growing awareness,” said Hill.

City spokesperson Ted Townsend added any LGBTQ group is welcome to organize an event with the city. That just hasn’t happened yet.

“Promotion of tolerance and intercultural harmony are aspects we look for in considering events,” said Townsend (the city, on its own, organized Richmond World Festival to promote cultural harmony).

Despite some inklings of change, school trustee Sandra Nixon is unconvinced Richmond has become an all-accepting place to live.

The fact Richmond doesn’t have a pride event endorsed by the (City of Richmond) and doesn’t fly the pride flag, and the fact the school district has been unwilling to accept a policy on gender expression. . .”

Nixon is working with Gilmore Park United Church on No. 1 Road to broaden the conversation of acceptance.

Gilmore Park Rev. Maggie Watts-Hammond recently attempted to bring levity

to the situation by posting on the outdoor church sign: “Jesus had two dads and he turned out OK.” Picked up by Huffington Post Canada and shared nearly 3,000 times on Facebook, Watts-Hammond said she was happy with the positive comments to the sign, which has since been changed to “Love is Love.”

But a deeper undercurrent of unacceptance exists in Richmond, said WattsHammond.

“Children being bullied and women assaulted because people think they’re lesbians. This is what I hear in Richmond and many other places. It behooves us as Christians to speak out,” she said, noting some churches in the city continue to preach conversion practices for gay people.

“How much more clear is it that God would love those who would love one another?” asked Watts-Hammond, whose church will launch an outreach program this fall to begin dialogue with LGBTQ identifying people who may feel unwelcomed, as well as members who may have questions.

“We all have questions when someone is different than us,” said Watts-Hammond.

Another inkling of hope for the local LGBTQ community is a new group for ethnic Chinese people, although it is based in Vancouver.

“Anything that disturbs this imagination is going to be a problem. And that’s where the LGBT rights fit in. They believe someone who advocates for these rights will divide their families,” said Tse. “To my understanding this has nothing to do with Chinese culture or values,” he said.

Rather this notion of private life and family sovereignty has become prevalent.

“The Chinese community is often viewed as not integrating. Is it integrating? Most definitely. But . . . if the Canadian values they embrace is a form of privatization, then privatization and integration are two

different actions,” said Tse. But with integration comes being accepted in a multicultural society, according to Tse. And this works both ways.

“Multiculturalism is an overlapping consensus on the views of what Canada is,” said Tse, adding, “There is a responsibility for dialogue.”

What he’s witnessing in Richmond is a more diversely-integrated younger generation that has been educated here.

“There are younger generation ChineseCanadians who are coming out as gay and bisexual,” said Tse. So, a “push and pull” dialogue is occurring in the Chinese community, said Tse. Just as it may be occurring in the city as a whole.

s a Winter Olympic Games legend with eight medals to his name, Apolo Ohno certainly subscribed to the games’ Latin motto “Citius, Altius, Fortius” - which translates in English to “Swifter, Higher, Stronger.”

Now, six years after concluding his Olympic short track speed skating career at the 2010 games Vancouver, his involvement with a Richmond-headquartered, natural supplement manufacturing company could easily alter his Olympic mantra to “Clearer, sharper, quicker.”

He said that throughout his athletic career he was always been in search of the best nutritional products to give him an edge over competitors. And since he traded the athletic arena for one focused on business Ohno said he was keen to find products that helped him, among other aspects, improve his memory.

Six years ago, when he met up with Vancouver-based software developer and network marketer, Rod Jao, the two clicked and started the company, with Jao as CEO. The goal was to further refine what Ohno had been developing and produce it for widespread consumer consumption.

The result has been a suite of botanicallybased products, and the one at the forefront is what Allysian calls Mastermind.

“I think it’s something that we all need in this ever-changing, fast-paced, technologically driven world,” said Ohno. “I was never contracted to be a spokesperson for this company. It is something I believe in. I believe in the products because they were formulated for myself. I also believe in what human performance can achieve.”

“We wanted to create a company that could enhance peoples’ lives around the world and believe all of that starts with the mind. So, we worked on the project and came up with products that maximize human potential,” Jao added.

The result is a range of supplements that Jao thought would have appeal to a wider audience outside the elite athlete circle Ohno associated with. And that means potentially big business. According to an Ipsos-Reid report in 2010 nutritional supplement sales represented $1.4 billion in Canada.

In the U.S., according to Statista, a webbased statistics portal, sales in 2016 are pegged at reaching $35 billion. And that is expected to jump another billion next year as more people go in search of health solutions that are not drug-centred.

All aboard for a trip back in time F

rom bicycles and rail to cars and buses, take a virtual trip through Richmond’s transportation history with on-site local experts at the All Aboard! event on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Steveston Interurban Tram Building.

Travel back in time on board the 104-year-old Interurban Tramcar 1220, located next to Steveston Park, near the northeast corner of Moncton Street and No. 1 Road. The historic tramcar once provided commuter rail service between Steveston and Vancouver as part of the popular Interurban rail service, which operated from 1905 to 1958. Visitors can view historical exhibits that tell the story of the beloved Interurban service and explore the interior of the tramcar.

LYNN Swainston wasn’t sure whether she needed a divorce lawyer or a parrot, but she knew something had to be done about her husband John’s hearing problems.

“To be honest we were borderline for the divorce courts because we were bickering all the time. Every time I spoke to John I had to repeat myself and after a while it gets a bit wearing. You start wondering whether it’s because he can’t hear you, or because he has selective hearing.”

She jokes: “I once told him, ‘I am going to buy a parrot so it can sit on my shoulder and every time you say, ‘pardon’ or ‘what’, or ‘eh?’ The parrot can repeat what I’ve said.”

The $1.3 million question – how not to sever joint title Our Court of Appeal last month gave its reasons in a significant case, called Zeligs v. Janes. The case concerns a claim by the Estate of a daughter of the deceased parent, against the other sister and the Estate of their mother. The reason the case is so important, in my opinion, is that it concerns title to land and how it was managed. hile many carmakers offer some form of hybrid vehicles, the standard has been set by Toyota, thanks to its iconic Prius.

Latest estimates claim there are over 8 million hybrid vehicles on the road worldwide.

It’s safe to say that many of them were inspired by the success of Toyota Prius.

2016 sees the introduction of an all-new fourth generation model. As with many of its recent new products, Toyota hopes the flashy new styling will make the purchase of a Prius an emotional one instead of a purely rational one.

The changes to this all-new Prius should help it continue its dominance over the Ford C-MAX Hybrid, Chevrolet Volt and the new Volkswagen Jetta Turbocharged Hybrid.

With this new structure, Toyota can cut production costs while retaining excellent design, drivability, and reliability. Thanks to its stiffer structure, the 2016 Prius has a much more rewarding driving experience over its past models.

Adding to that is a first-time double wishbone independent rear suspension. Compared to the former torsion beam design, the new Prius provides smoother reaction to bumps and better grip in corners.

Also, while the 106.3-inch wheelbase is unchanged, the fourth-generation Prius is

longer, wider and lower. The lower hoodline contributes to improved aerodynamics, but also enhances forward sightlines and keeps the cabin quieter.

The new Prius has a much more dramatic and athletic look. The lights are a big contributor in that regard with the menacing standard LED headlights setting the tone and the taillights following suit.

More defined character lines along the sides give the Prius a stronger curbside presence. The “floating roof” treatment continues the contemporary feel. In fact, the design is so radical that some people might not recognize it immediately as the Prius.

Like the rest of the new Prius, every element of the interior has been redesigned.

The new chassis allows for a more open, airy feel in the cabin.

n Performance

While sharp looks are nice, the most important factor for a Prius buyer is fuel economy. In this regard, the 2016 has improved slightly.

Like the third-generation Prius, the new model combines a 1.8-litre 4-cylinder gasoline engine with two electric motors. While horsepower is down, efficiency is up thanks to smaller and lighter hybrid components.

In addition to the standard nickel-metal hydride battery, there will be a newly available lithium-ion hybrid. This battery’s smaller size and flatter shape allows it to be packaged under the rear seat, rather than beneath the luggage area, resulting in more cargo space.

The transmission is still a continuously variable transmission, but again the

Local rugby talent given praise he Richmond Rugby Football Club has announced the sixth annual Maurice Smith City of Richmond All-Stars for the 2015-16 season.

The senior boys team is comprised of athletes from the McRoberts Strikers, Cambie Crusaders and McMath Wildcats.

McRoberts finished fourth in the AA-Tier 2 provincial championships in Abbotsford, losing to eventual champions LV Rogers of Nelson in the semi-finals.

The McMath Wildcats, featuring a team comprised of mostly grade 10s and 11s, qualified for their first ever B.C. tournament berth, finishing seventh place at the AA-Tier 2 level by defeating DW Poppy of Langley.

The Cambie Crusaders finished third in the Lower Mainland at the Tier-2 level, falling to Burnaby Central in the district semifinals. All three schools will look to continue their winning ways in the Lower Mainland Tier-1 league next season.

The Senior Girls team includes athletes from Steveston-London, McMath, McRoberts and McNair.

The McRoberts Strikers finished a banner year for the program winning their second Lower Mainland-AA championship in the

school’s history.

The seven-a-side program also won the Bowl (placing ninth in the province) at the provincial tournament in Victoria. While nearly half of the team’s starting line-up is graduating, the Strikers, led by recent Team BC selection Valerie Wideski, will look to qualify for the 15-a-side provincial tournament in 2017.

After graduating several starters in 2015, The McMath Wildcats had a rebuilding year, starting a line-up full of young players at the Grade 9 level. However, the team persevered against their older and more experienced competition finishing in fourth place in the Lower Mainland-AAA competition. The school placed two girls (Alex Strandt and Kate Fedoruk) on the recent Vancouver & Area Under-16 Provincial Regional team.

The junior boys team features athletes from McRoberts and McMath, and is based on play from the Vancouver & District fall seven-a-side league (McRoberts) and spring 15-a-side league (McMath).

Many of the McMath Wildcats selected were standout players for the school’s senior boy’s team in the spring, as well.

Camryn Rogers has established herself as one of the top up and coming track and field athletes in the country. The 17-year-old Kajaks standout won gold in the junior hammer throw and shot put events at the Canadian Track and Field Championships in Edmonton. She is now in Poland as one of the youngest members of Team Canada at the U20 IAAF World Championships, competing in the hammer event. Entering her Grade 12 year at McMath Secondary, she also set a B.C. high school record in the hammer toss back in June. Tim didn’t stop there; this summer, he coached two teams of five female players each in the inaugural U13 3x3 basketball event at the Biennial BC Summer Games held in Abbotsford July 21-24, 2016. His teams represented Zone 5 VancouverCoastal (Richmond) in the games as Vancouver-Coastal (VC) and Vancouver-Coastal A (VCA) and eight of the 10 players were from the Raccoons, so Tim was already well aware of his players’ strengths and skills.

As his tireless efforts continued, so did his success.

After day one seeding games, VC went 3-0 and VCA went 2-1 and both finished at the top of their pools. In day two

playoffs, VC went 3-0 again, which secured their place in the gold medal game, and after VCA won their first two games, it appeared like it was going to be an all VancouverCoastal Gold Medal game — but VCA ended up losing a heartbreaker at the buzzer in their third game which secured their place in the bronze medal game.

Both VC teams went on to win their medal games and took home gold and bronze medals.

Tim humbly credits his incredible work ethic to his father and success to being blessed with incredible player talent, dedicated support of a great group of parents, and phenomenal assistant coaches.

Then, in the evening, came the semi finals. Both teams were up against two outstanding teams from Vancouver Island and the Fraser Valley. The match-ups would be key as these teams had a huge size advantage.

My daughter Kate’s VC squad was up first against their arch rival Fraser Valley.

The gym Abbostford Middle School gym was packed, noisy, and hot! Back and forth we went until it came down to just a 18 seconds left on the clock, we were up 14-13 and the other team had two chances to score but could not — so, off to the gold medal game on Sunday!

Next was our VCA team versus Vancouver Island.

Another battle but with three seconds left on the clock, game tied, their player chucks a long shot outside shot for the win. So now, they are off to play for bronze Sunday morning.

First up was VCA versus

Fraser Valley. The girls played their hearts out and were rewarded with a win and the bronze medal!

Next was the finals, VC versus Vancouver Island. By this time the boys three on three had finished, so the gym was overflowing with other teams, parents, and coaches.

We start off strong then we got into early foul trouble, so my assistant coach, Connie Chan, and I were forced to sit Kate more than we wanted.

The girls battled it out and we head into the last three minutes with the Mina Chong, Kate, and Kaila Fong line.

The girls used their speed, aggressive play and outstanding shooting/driving to the hoop without fear to get a one point lead. Then with four seconds left, Vancouver Island had the ball at the top, we’re up 11-10. Our kids stopped them and we took gold! The gym erupted!

We are all beyond proud of these 10 outstanding players — seven from Richmond and three from Vancouver, all RYBL players. Simply a fantastic accomplishment!

y daughter Kate and I got home Sunday night after an amazing four days out in Abbotsford at the BC Summer Games. Our two U13 Vancouver Coastal basketball teams started their “seeding” games Friday. Basically, the 16 teams were broken down into groups of four with the VC team winning all three and the Vancouver-Coastal A team going 2-1.

Saturday was the beginning of a 16-team, U13 three-onthree half-court tournament.

You keep winning and you have a chance at a medal.

Because both our teams finished first in their pool, our Saturday morning games were a tad easier.

The kids were nervous (and a little tired from the Hawaiian theme dance that the Games organizers put on for the athletes the night before!) but came out and won both.

After that was the quarter finals. These were tougher games but again both teams took control in the relatively
