o doubt, the police have a tough job knowing what information to disclose and not disclose to the public when they’re in the middle of an investigation. They have to strike a balance between being open, accountable and eliciting public support, while at the same time respecting people’s privacy and not jeopardizing a case by putting too much information into the public domain.

I’m on to this now as there has been a lot of chatter on the Richmond News’ Facebook page about a “missing teen.”

When the girl had been gone a number of days, the police declared her missing and sought the public’s help in finding her. A few days later, she was located and the police issued a statement saying just that — and that’s when the online posts began. Comments varied, but most were in the vein of, “What, that’s it? You’re going to just leave us hanging?”

When it comes to a kid gone missing, it’s hard not to feel invested in the outcome.

Who doesn’t want to know the whys and wherefores. Moreover, if people feel like they’ve suddenly been shut out of the ongoing drama, they may be less likely to help out the next time.

All that said, if there’s been no foul play, no one’s been charged, and the kid is safe, it really is time for us to butt out and just be thankful the story doesn’t have a different ending. In hindsight, perhaps a missing person advisory wasn’t necessary, but imagine the outrage if police hadn’t taken the issue seriously when they should have.

But while it makes sense to me that the police are suddenly “mom” on this case, I’m scratching my head over their refusal to disclose any details regarding the fatality of cyclist Christy Mahy, the young woman who was hit by a car on Russ Baker Way as she stood at an intersection.

As her father Ron Mahy prepares to mark the two-year anniversary of the tragedy with a motorcycle ride in her honour (July 30), he’s not much closer to knowing what happened that fateful day. The driver of the car stayed at the scene, so this isn’t a case of a suspect at large — at least it shouldn’t be. A year ago, Mahy was told the “person of interest,” had returned to the UK, which they were entitled to do as they hadn’t been charged. Nevertheless, the investigation was ongoing. A year later, and still nothing.

Police reticence breeds suspicion that this case was somehow bungled. I truly hope not.

I hope there’s a really good reason why the family, nevermind the public, are being kept in the dark. But at some point, we need an explanation as to where the investigation is at and why. Reporter Philip Raphael will be asking just that in our story next week.

Dear Editor, My wife and I eat out a lot and when we have not been travelling or making an occasional visit to Downtown Vancouver, we have been content to stay in Steveston to enjoy the variety of cuisines that are available in our little town.

We could still use more variety — say a good deli where one could get traditional pastrami, Montreal smoked-meat, and corned-beef sandwiches on rye bread, another place like the one that was open for awhile behind the former Papi’s where you could get a real American-style hamburger, a Japadog-style establishment that would offer a variety of gourmet hot dogs, and an authentic French restaurant with upscale dishes, service, and wine list — but until recently our dining experiences in Steveston have been quite satisfying.

But in the last two years, four of the restaurants we had enjoyed and grown to trust over the years have either disappeared or changed ownership (same name and menu), and we are saddened by the fact that what has replaced them is quite simply disappointing.

We have been open to trying each of the replacement establishments and are quite capable of being objective in our comparisons and assessment (our son is a chef so we have had the luxury of a quite thorough

Change, especially in the volatile restaurant industry is inevitable, but the idea of change is to improve on what is being replaced, and if this trend of closures, newownerships, and sub-standard replacement offerings continues in the manner we are experiencing in Steveston, our dining options will be reduced to a fraction of what we have enjoyed over the last 25 years.

It doesn’t matter if you are serving hamburgers and fries, pancakes, or Confit de Canard — cook it with care, use quality ingredients, have great pride in what you are serving, and have us leave our dining experience feeling as if we had received full value for both our time and money.

But, be warned restaurateurs, if you don’t attend to these basic principles, then good luck staying in business for very long, because people like us will never become return customers — and it is return customers, or lack of them, that makes or breaks businesses.

It appears that existing seniors will not be affected at all. Their pensions will remain the same, increased annually as usual, by the Stats Can Consumer Price index (which has been between roughly 1-2 percent in the last few years). Seniors who depend exclusively on CPP (and OAS, and who are then eligible for the Guaranteed Income Supplement) are status quo under the new agreement.

What remains a concern, in my opinion, is that as widows/widowers, they still lose their deceased spouse’s OAS and Guaranteed Income Supplement. Also, though they may be entitled to the CPP Survivor benefit, they still will never receive more than the maximum CPP (which today is about $1,090 per month).

The new agreement will not help enough seniors.

Food charter without Farming, finally Slow burn Win BC on mail action leaves bad taste Lions Dear Editor, Re: “City council shows hunger for Richmond Food Charter,” News, July 13 In our household, we happily support our local farmers and prefer domestic food products for their freshness, quality, and, we hope, nutritious value and safety.

Our shopping habits reflect this.

This preference has led to eating “seasonally”— cajoling the fruit in our fruit bowl to some state of ripeness only to be rewarded with tastelessness has little appeal.

Crop diversification/rotation is a desirable practice for improved soil health, greater variety of crops and should be encouraged. Coun. Harold Steves is on the right track with his recommendation of diversification over monoculture.

And so, I was encouraged when I read about the Richmond Food Charter and appreciate the effort that went into planning and mapping out a guide for future policy, and the fact that the Richmond councilors unanimously endorsed these principles.

But what does that mean?

What does it mean to endorse the charter if that does not commit the city to any specific actions?

Would that be akin to the heritage inventory that includes no formal protection, allowing heritage buildings to be demolished by developers if they so choose?

What does that mean in the context of the mega, mega mansions — or are those motels — that are being built on our agricultural land contributing to land price inflation beyond the reach of most farmers?

Are these estates waiting for rezoning of the ALR? The 2014 changes to zoning by the provincial government opening up ALR land to more development would indicate so.

And why has the City of Richmond allowed the construction of these monstrosities while another municipality put house size restrictions on their farmland?

Endorsing a food charter without commiting any specific actions means it looks good on paper only for the City of Richmond’s reputation as a leader, and its vision to be “the most appealing, livable, and well-managed community in Canada.”

I hope that I am wrong.

Dear Editor, I live on a property adjoining a farm on Finn Road that was in the news three years ago for dumping several thousand tons of demolition materials right through the middle of this very productive prime farm land.

It is truly nice to see the return of fields of corn and potatoes by the new owner and lessee. Unfortunately, about three acres, mainly in one long 80-foot wide strip is permanently destroyed with broken concrete and rebar protruding, and can probably never be farmed or utilized due to the damage inflicted by that previous lessee.

chool trustee Sandra Nixon said she was pleased to hear changes to the B.C. Human Rights Code will now recognize gender identity and expression as a protected right, however, the Richmond School District is still in need of a related policy to “create a culture of affirmation and support” among students, teachers and parents.

“Many students are still voicing that they feel marginalized in many ways,” including sexual orientation and gender identity, said Nixon.

“I still want the district and the board to take further actions and adopt a policy,” she said.

To date, the district has maintained it depends on the code to prevent bullying

and discrimination. However, the code hadn’t included protection of gender expression and identity.

On Wednesday, B.C.’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton announced amendments to that code.

“With these amendments, B.C.’s Human Rights Code will reflect the current state of law in our province and will align with human rights legislation across the country, including Canada’s proposed Bill to add ‘gender identity or expression’ to the Canadian Human Rights Act. “I know this addition means a great deal to those who have advocated for its inclusion,” stated Anton, via a news release.

China seizes winery bottles Graeme Wood

John Chang, the president of Lulu Island Winery, is being investigated by Chinese customs officials, who have alleged the high-profile businessman smuggled ice wine into China.

Various news outlets in China are reporting Chang has been accused of underreporting the value of the wine he produces in Richmond and subsequently exports to China, in order to avoid paying import taxes.

Lulu Island Winery stated Chang and the company are cooperating with customs authorities in China.

“Lulu Island believes all of its wine imports to China have been done in full compliance with all application laws, rules and regulations.

We understand Customs authorities in China have recently conducted investigations regarding the foreign imported wine from a number of countries, including Canada,” stated a company spokesperson.

According to reports, customs officials claim Chang was declaring bottles of wine

for 10 Yuan, or about $2, whereas the actual worth was closer to $50 and above.

small, 70-year-old home on a 29,000 squarefoot lot on Railway Avenue will be demolished and developed into a 17-unit townhouse complex that could set a precedent for affordable housing units in such developments.

The City of Richmond’s planning committee chair Coun. Linda McPhail said the developer, 1037533 BC Ltd., has been granted increased density on the site in exchange for building three housing units with lifelong rent-control covenants placed on them by the city.

City planners noted in a report to council that this development is the first townhouse proposal in the city to include built affordable housing units that exceed the city’s Affordable Housing Strategy (15 per cent as opposed to five per cent).

affordable housing fund, at a rate of $4 per square foot of new livable space, per the strategy.

The 14 market units will be larger than the rent-controlled units (one one-bedroom plus den and two three-bedroom units), which will be located along the arterial road.

Each market unit will have two parking spaces, and outdoor amenity space will be located in the middle of the development. The developer will pay $1,000 per unit to the city, in lieu of providing indoor amenity

One tree will be spared on city land along Railway, while eight other trees on the property will be cut down as they were deemed in poor condition. With such rezoning applications, those trees will be replaced at a two-to-one ratio.

Dr. Chris Ng was found at his Saltspring Island retirement home on June 17. It is believed he suffered injuries while clearing trees on the property a few weeks prior.

He was 75.

His son, Const. Jimmy Ng, was killed when his cruiser was broadsided in 2002 by another car running a red light in Richmond. The driver was sentenced to 18 months in jail for criminal negligence causing death and an additional six months for leaving the scene of an accident.

Staff Sgt. Major John Buis, a watch commander at the Richmond RCMP detachment when Const. Ng died, got to know Chris Ng in the years following his son’s death.

Buis is part of a group that puts together an annual memorial at the RCMP’s training depot in Regina, Sask. and would meet with Ng each September.

“He and his wife (Therese) were mainstays at that ceremony,” Buis said. “We met each year for the past five years, except one, when his wife passed away from cancer in 2013.”

lost a member of their family while serving in the RCMP. Ng and his wife ran their dental practice in Richmond for 40 years before retiring to Salt Spring Island. The two were also involved in many missionary endeavors in Asia and Africa over the years.

he idea that someday Richmond would once again be a destination for RV campers appears to be over.

Last year, city councillors on Richmond’s parks and recreation committee asked city parks planners to research whether or not the city could once again host an RV campground, perhaps similar to the one that existed near the Richmond Olympic Oval site.

The response this week

in a staff report to the committee: Not a chance, considering the high land values of today and land use restrictions.

“A preliminary financial analysis of a 12-acre, 150 pad RV park on leased land has found that the financial case for an RV park is very weak in Richmond,” noted the report.

The city considered RV spaces at McDonald Beach, however aircraft noise and environmentally sensitive areas nearby outweighed the benefits.

City properties on Triangle Road, Dyke Road and at

Woodward’s Landing were also considered. Meanwhile, parks such as Garry Point and Terra Nova are already in high use for other activities.

The city hired a consultant for the report. The consultant noted RV parks are feasible on land costing $250,000 per acre.

RV parks are not allowed on farmland either. Even if they were, Richmond’s farmland costs about $350,000 per acre.

Furthermore, the city is unaware of any private groups interested in starting an RV park business.

Volunteer knitters falling short of yarn Scarf and toque makers ready to create food bank gifts

or the past year, a group of avid Richmond knitters has banded together to help keep Richmond Food Bank clients cozy during the winter months by making a growing collection of scarves and toques that are handed out during the cold months, as part of a winter relief pack.

But now, they are running out of yarn.

Judy Ying Sun, office manager for the Food Bank who coordinates the group, the told the News there are roughly 65 knitters involved and their efforts have tapped out pretty much the whole supply of donated materials that has come from individuals, other knitting groups and churches.

To reach the targeted goal of 1,200 scarves and toques she hopes to find some new resources.

“There are homeless people who are cold and need the scarves and toques during the winter,” she said. “We can’t just say, ‘Sorry, we don’t have any more.”

The warm knitwear is handed out during one week in either late November or early December, said Alex Nixon, the food bank’s communications and outreach coordinator. In addition to the scarves and torques other items such as soaps and moisturizer are put into the packs.

While the items go a long way to making life a little easier during the chilly weather, those doing the knitting also get a return for their volunteer efforts, Sun said.

“The knitting is very beneficial for a lot of people,” she said, adding a good number of volunteers are looking for ways to contribute back to the community but don’t know how. This gives them something to focus on.”

“It also provides a social boost for the volunteers who gather each month at the food bank to bring in their work.

“That’s when we share our ideas and have a lunch together,” Sun said, adding

some of the knitters are very competitive and want to not only turn out a decent number of items but take great pride in producing wellmade scarves and toques.

Plus, there are some beginning knitters who are never short of getting advice from the more experienced members in the group. Sun also held workshops for those wanting to learn.

“And we even had one volunteer say that this was a way of making a present for their own daughter,” Sun said. “She was going to use her knitting skills and make a scarf as a gift.”

“This knitting group is a great way for people to get involved,” Nixon said. “They may not want to be here and give out food directly, but they do want to help their neighbours in need.

This group allows people to contribute in a different and very valuable way. The volunteers get the social aspect of the knitting group and it’s an opportunity to help the community.”

But with a current short-

age of donated yarn Sun said she is not sure if this year’s target will be met.

“I’ve already got about 800 and I don’t know where the material will come from for the remaining 400,” she said.

“It’s hard. We asked so many groups last year for assistance that we are finding there’s not much left out there,” Sun added. “And our volunteers are calling us asking if there’s any knitting to do.”

“And we don’t have the funds to buy the yarn,” Nixon said.

Art may bloom at Oval A

large tree of flowers may soon adorn the middle arm dyke trail near the Richmond Olympic Oval.

The $437,500 public art piece named Flower Tree, by South Korean artist Choi Jeong Hwa, is being proposed by Richmond’s public art planner Eric Fiss for the planned Hollybridge Way Plaza. The flowers could compliment the expanding waterfront park, as they’d be situated next to a soon-to-bebuilt public pier.

The fibre-reinforced plastic flowers would sit perched on top of a nine metre steel frame that resembles a stump.

Choi has built similar flower trees for locations in Shanghai, China, Lyon, France and Tinan, Taiwan. The award-winning artist has made many other pieces of art from flowers.

The artwork was approved by the Public Art Advisory Committee, consisting of three art experts, a local resident and the developer’s landscape architect. It still requires city council’s approval. Developer Aspac (Oval 8 Holdings Ltd.) will pay for the artwork as part of its public art contribution after rezoning of the nearby property to build 173 condos at River Green. A $25,000 fund from the developer would allow the flowers to be re-painted at no cost to the city for the next 15 years.

we call baby checks, and then the moms get together and talk,” Miller said. “They are on a defined topic and they share things with each other. That isn’t done in regular maternity care.”

Enriching that experience is a mixture of clients, some who are first-timers, and others who are on their second or third pregnancy.

One of the clients at Blossom, Shelley John, who is due Sept. 2. She said she chose the collaborative firm of care because she wanted to get to know the people who would help her through the pregnancy and birth.

“I had heard that the nurses provide most of the care and at the end the OBGYN comes in like a rock star and delivers your baby,” John said. “It can be the same if you go to your GP because they may not be available for the birth.

“I like the fact there are three midwives here and two doctors, who we’ve met and have had appointments with, so it won’t be a stranger. It will be someone we know,” she added.

Plus, John is having her child on her own, via a sperm donor, and liked the supportive nature of the group sessions.

“Just to have the connections of the other moms is a big thing,” she said.

Lamcy Xu, who is due Sept. 6, said she likes the fact all of the appointments at Blossom are held on time.

“Other people who go to their doctor can be waiting for a long time,” she said laughing. “Any time you make an appointment here they are on time.”

Lori Miller, a registered nurse and midwife, said the options previously for pregnant women in Richmond were divided into separate components – a family physician, obstetrician, or midwife.

“That just wasn’t a satisfying way of offering maternity care,” she told the News, adding some local physicians were feeling the same way. “So, we got together and looked at what was already being done.”

What they found novel was that the existing program in Vancouver was intent on engaging women in their own care, which includes the option of a home birth.

“It was not just about them coming into the office, sit down and get the information, but engaging, informing and empowering them,” Miller said, adding it also fostered a sense of community.

That part was deemed vital as she found out from other moms that since Richmond has such as diverse community, getting to know people could prove to be quite a task.

“Public health nurses do a great job with holding baby health days, but a lot of moms still felt quite isolated,” Miller said. “And that got them down.”

Solving that issue was holding group prenatal classes.

Take a long weekend in Canada’s desert GRAEMEWOOD Staff Reporter

soyoos has always been a favourite place to holiday, since the time I was a teenager with my parents, to when I was in my 20s, driving up myself with friends, to now, in my early 30s, revisiting old memories and making new ones with my wife.

There’s a natural progression to visiting the Okanagan — from spinning and flipping off a tube 20 feet in the air at 40 km/h, to simply taking in the peaceful scenery, away from the grind — that takes into account people of all ages. I find myself teetering in the middle. Either way, it’s all fun.

This time around, instead of staying in

town, my wife, Jennifer, and I decided to stay at the Spirit Ridge Nk’Mip Resort during a three-night blitz of Canada’s only desert environment.

One of the aspects that attracted me to the resort is the fact that it has so many amenities and activities close by and insuite kitchens, in turn saving you time and money. Unfortunately, we didn’t have much time, but we tried to pack in as much as we could.

After arriving Friday evening, following a horrendous gauntlet of traffic through the Fraser Valley, we were checked in quickly and shown our one-bedroom villa overlooking the resort’s vineyard and Osoyoos lake.

Early Saturday morning I went into town and stocked up on groceries.

But before cooking, I played the “sneaky husband” card and snuck in nine holes of golf at the nine-hole, executivelength Sonora Dunes course.

The clubhouse is literally right across the parking lot from the check-in area and restaurant, so you can’t beat the convenience. I chose to forgo the cart to get some exercise, zig zagging up the side of the mountain and back down again. It was nice to get the round in early in the morning, before the sun poked itself over the easterly mountains (beat the heat).

If you’re an avid golfer, Osoyoos provides one other solid choices to swing your sticks — the 36-hole Osoyoos Golf Club, which offers its Parks Meadow and Desert Gold courses.

Back in the room I made breakfast, we ate

and it was off to the pool.

If you really want to pamper yourself, the resort offers spa services at the Solterra Desert Spa. We chose to sit by the side of one of the two pools when not out and about during the weekend. One appeared more familyoriented, while the other, overlookingthe lake was quieter with serious sun tanners staking a claim.

We’re not wine drinkers but, “When in Rome.” It would be sacrilegious to stay at Spririt Ridge without visiting Nk’Mip Cellars, the first Aboriginal-owned winery in North America. The winery offers daily tours of the production facility, which entertains those who like to tinker with things, while tasting seminar is apropos for the more relaxed personality. Either way, inquiring minds are well served.

One of the best oonline-rated restaura rants in Osoyoos is T The Patio at Nk’Mip C Cellars. The Patio is ju just that, a patio! But itits half-dozen tables p perched on a lawn ooverlooking the lake aand the vineyard m makes it special.

If the spectacular vviews aren’t enough, yyou have a full list of aaward-winning wines to choose from and a small, but fresh m menu of great-lookin ing food.

We explored the vineyard on Saturday and walked down to the resort’s campground and RV park, at the lake. It looked like a great place to stay and very family friendly. A new Mexican cantina and outdoor bar has been built right on the lake. Bocce ball and other lawn games were in full swing when we walked down. You can even grab a resort shuttle to and from the lake.

We also explored the Desert Cultural Centre where manager Derek Bryson was available to speak to us about the Osoyoos Indian Band, which owns and operates the resort. The centre has a small museum of artefacts so visitors can learn about the

Beach days are a must in Osoyoos and the municipality has done a great job opening up that area. The lake offers great views of the mountains that are increasingly used for vineyards, as they creep into the sage brush.

In town, Rattlesnake Canyon (mini golf, small rides, ice cream parlour etc.) is a good place to drop the kids off and there are restaurants for all sorts of tastebuds. A couple of bars can be found, as well.

Associated with the pet-friendly full-service resort is a bevy of summer-season activities, such as helicopter tours, fishing adventures, horseback riding, ATV tours and wakeboarding/water skiing lessons.

With a full week at the resort you’ll be sure to make a dent in all that it has to offer, least to mention everything Osoyoos has to offer.

he City of Richmond is contributing just over $130,000 to the non-profit Habitat for Humanity Society of Greater Vancouver to help cover development cost charges associated with a 12-unit, affordable housing project on Ash Street.

With six affordable homeownership units, Habitat’s project is relatively unique for Richmond, considering only 19 such units exist in the city.

There will be six homes on the site, each with small secondary suites (mortgage helpers) that also have rent controls

placed on them.

The goal of the $2.4 million project is to see families transition into traditional market housing, by paying mortgages that cost just 30 per cent of gross family income.

A homeowner’s allowable income is capped at $65,000, while renters cannot be earning more than $35,000.

All tenants must commit to 500 hours of “sweat equity,” meaning they help build the homes in some manner.

The cash contribution will come out of the city’s affordable housing reserve, which is fed by new developments on a $2-$6 per square foot basis depending on the density of the project.

In a report to Richmond’s planning committee, affordable housing coordinator Joyce Rautenberg noted more rental and subsidized affordable housing is needed in the city.

“Metro Vancouver estimates that over the next 10 years, there will be a need for 1,040 ownership units (including affordable homeownership) and 180 units of low-income rental housing annually.

The Habitat for Humanity project is one step in addressing this need to generate housing options for a diverse population,” stated Rautenberg.

Land for the project was sold at a reduced rate of $397,000 by the provincial government.

peaking last month about supporting a house-flipping tax, Gregor Robertson, mayor of Vancouver, said: “First and foremost, housing needs to be for homes, not just treated as a commodity.”

I was relieved – not because of the tax, but because finally someone has sensed there’s a difference between house and home.

Every word has a distinct meaning. In spite of what realtors claim in their ads, it’s houses they sell, not homes. Home is an abstract noun, referring to something intangible, such as a concept or condition.

House is a concrete noun — it’s tangible, you can touch a house. The words home and house are not interchangeable — you

can’t say houseland for homeland, or housetown for hometown.

So, what is a home, if it’s not the same as a house? The American poet Edgar Guest (1881-1959) summed it up in his poem entitled Home, in particular in two of the lines: “Home ain’t a place that gold can buy or get up in a minute” and “It takes a heap o’ livin’ in a house t’ make it home.”

A house is a structure built with a variety of materials. A house becomes a home when it’s inhabited, when it shelters the occupants. But a home doesn’t have to be in a house — it could be in a tent or trailer, for instance. Also, animals make homes, inhabiting caves, trees, constructing nests, lodges, and so forth.

There is only one word for home, but there are many words for house, describing the different types of constructions humans build. When reading the classified ads in early 20th-century editions of the

Richmond paper, I found mention not only of houses but also cottages, bungalows and shacks.

Shack, especially, tickled my curiosity. Perhaps derived from the Aztecan “xacatli” (wooden hut), shack was North American slang for house by 1910. A late 19th-century drawing at the University of Saskatchewan, showing the interior of a small log cabin, is identified on the back as depicting “a typical bachelor shack,” with the additional information that “most western men have lived in just such a shack.”

North Americans nowadays use the word cottage mostly to mean their vacation house, but originally cottage (a Late Middle English word) was a humble dwelling, akin to a hut or shed (the word cote, as in dovecote, is related to cottage). By 1765,

cottage described a small country residence, though in early twentieth-century Richmond it’s likely to have been a modest house surrounded by gardens.

The word bungalow, in use since 1676, comes from the Hindi “bangla,” meaning Bengalese. It referred to the type of low house built in Bengal for Europeans settlers. We use bungalow to mean a one-storey house, and it’s the descriptor appearing most often in Richmond’s early ads.

But soon, the last of Richmond’s indigenous homey houses will be crunched into extinction, because Richmond’s ubiquitous house type is now the McMansion, described by Oxford Dictionary as a “large modern house that is considered ostentatious and lacking in architectural integrity.”

The Olympic Experience (The ROX) at the Richmond Olympic Oval has been recognized as the top new tourist attraction in Metro Vancouver by Where magazine, the world’s largest publisher of tourism-oriented visitor magazines.

But with all of the choices out there, why do Canadians guzzle Caesars?

“I don’t know if there’s one answer,” Silverman said. “It’s a little bit like having Vegamite associated with Australians. It’s like how we differentiate ourselves from Americans. We like hockey more than football. We’re into curling. We like back bacon, which is very clichéd, but Caesars are one of them, too.

“Americans don’t get it. We get it, and it’s delicious.”

Perhaps it’s the clam juice?

“That really does add something unique, that briney-ness which when talking about a savoury cocktail, makes it better,” Silverman said.

Another attraction is the wide range of garnishes a Caesar can have.

“That’s all part of the fun,” Silverman said.

“It’s so customizable.”

The most remarkable Silverman recalls seeing is a Caesar served with an entire soft shell crab stuffed into the glass.

“It was a deep fried, breaded crab,” he said laughing.

As for how he personally likes his Caesar, Silverman said he’s a minimalist and prefers his served with lots of ice in a short glass rimmed with a simple collection of spices, not just celery salt which he finds too bitter.

So, what would Walter Chell think of Walter “We hope he’d be proud of what we’ve created because when Walter started he was using his own mix, not one coming out of a giant factory,” Silverman said. “We think we’re going back to those roots of using real tomatoes and real clam juice.”

“It didn’t make sense that the most popular cocktail in Canada had essentially no alterative except for this U.S., mass-marketed mix full of artificial ingredients,” Silverman said. “So, we thought someone is going to change this, it may as well be us.”

When producing the recipe for Walter the pair subscribed to the “garbage in, garbage out” philosophy and settled on sourcing quality ingredients.

“We use whole, all natural tomatoes, that’s why our juice is red,” Silverman said. “There’s no reason to add artificial colour. Instead of using high fructose corn syrup we add a touch of natural cane sugar. So, it’s simple, clean ingredients that make all the difference.”

So, what about the clam juice?

Walter uses the real thing and backs that up by working with the Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean-Wise program to ensure the clams they use come from a sustainable source.

While the tomatoes come from California, and the clams are harvested from a U.S. Atlantic fishery, thoughts are to ultimately make Walter all-Canadian at some point.

So, what are we left with?

Answer: The venerable Caesar.

If you believe the numbers, 360 million are served each year in Canada. That’s a lot of drinks per person of drinking age.

It’s a born-in-Canada cocktail whose beginnings go back to the late 1960s when Calgary restaurant manager Walter Chell concocted a tomato and clam juice mix, added hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, spices and mixed it with vodka over ice and served it with a stalk of celery.

Now, a pair of Richmond childhood friends are trying to repatriate the savoury cocktail with their own blend of Casesar mix that is simply named after the father of the Caesar – Walter.

Zack Silverman said he and Aaron Harowitz were tired of the limited choice of Caesar mixes on the market. They were not only full of undesirable ingredients, but lacked a real sense of quality that today’s craft breweryfavouring consumers demand, according to the pair.

That’s why they jumped from their everyday professions — Silverman is a lawyer and Harowitz is a graphic designer — into the beverage business to sell a product that stays close to the origins of Chell’s invention, which was inspired by spaghetti alle vongole (tomato sauce and clams).

“Aaron and I, we’re both foodies, we cook and it’s something we care about, and one day we were looking at the Caesar market in Canada and realised it’s by far the most popular cocktail in Canada,” Silverman, 38, said. “Threehundred and sixty million. That’s a mind-boggling number for the population.”

But for the last, 30-plus years almost every Caesar in Canada was made with one mix made by a U.S.-based multi-national, he added.

“But most importantly for us, that mix really didn’t have good ingredients,” Silverman said, adding it contains MSG, artificial colours, high fructose corn syrup and uses dehydrated clam broth.

t was only fitting on a weekend when the Dolphin Classic returned to its old neighbourhood, the winning team happen to feature one of city’s all-time greats back in action.

Novell Thomas hadn’t played in the popular 4-on-4 outdoor summer basketball tournament since 2012. But there was the former Steveston Packer star and national team member helping AthElite take top honours at the age of 40.

“The last time I was here (the X-Falcons) won too so I’m picking my teams well. You have to at my age,” laughed Thomas, following AthElite’s 65-59 victory over SB Battle in Sunday night’s championship game. “It was

limited minutes this weekend with a great bunch of guys who I have never played with before. If my body feels good and the timing is right, I might weasel my way onto another team next year too.”

Thomas was back home visiting family. He now resides in Manitoba and is entering his fifth season as head coach of the women’s basketball team at the University of Brandon.

“There has been a lot of work the last four years,” he added. “When I arrived it was a program that hadn’t won any conference games and last season we were one of four teams battling for a playoff spot. It’s the best the team has done in the last 30 years. It’s starting to move but it’s been a lot of work.”

While Thomas and Dolphin legend Aman Heran had limited roles, AthElite had plenty of young legs, led by the MVP performance of former Tamanawis standout Sukhjot Bains and all-star Tommy Nixon.

AthElite raced out to a big lead on previously unbeaten SB Battle and held off a second half charge to win its third ever Dolphin title.

The women’s draw saw defending champion Chaos rebound for a 26-point opening game loss to repeat with a dominating 64-36 win over the Original Grandma’s in the final — led by MVP Elle Kerfoot.

Overshadowing the basketball was the 31-year-old Classic making its debut at the South Arm Community Center — just blocks away from the park where it all began. The venue received rave reviews and attracted the typical large crowds that has made the tournament what it is.

“We had a block party and that’s exactly what we wanted and what we had at the original Dolphin,” said tournament organizer and founder Bira Bindra. “The consensus was everybody loved it. We had great people and great basketball and that’s what this is all about.”

feels like we are back in the neighbourhood and this is the right place to be. It’s nothing against Thompson and the people there were wonderful to us. Sometimes things happen and they just seem to click. That’s what happened this weekend.”

Islanders’ playoff road leads to provincial bronze T

he Richmond 2000A islanders up and down season appears to be moving in the right direction at just the right time.

The girls rep softball team earned a bronze medal at the U16A provincial championships in North Delta — going 6-2 over the threeday event.

“We’ve had a few tournaments where we did very well in the round-robin, only to stumble during the playoffs,” said Islanders coach Troy Latrace. “Going 4-0 in round robin play and placing first overall was a great accomplishment, but Sunday’s games are where you really need to show what you are made of.”

Those early wins included triumphs over Delta Heat , White Rock Renegades ’01, arch rivals Renegades ’00 and a surprisingly strong Fraser Valley Fusion ’01 team.

“That first win over Renegades ’00 really set the tone for us,” continued Latrace.

“Most of the year, they had our number but we jumped on their top pitcher early and never looked back.”

“Winning games like that doesn’t happen very often, but we did it twice this weekend, and to do it to guarantee a medal makes it even more memorable,” said Latrace.

That led to a rematch with Fusion and

the Valley team bats remained hot and the islanders could not keep up.

“I would have liked to make it one more game but overall I am extremely proud of these girls. Going into this tournament I would have said any one of five teams could win it. Now I would say any one of seven, so the strength and parity of the competition makes me feel even better about our results,” added Latrace.

The Islanders have drawn some excellent players from around the Lower Mainland but the six local players — all originals from the first year at U12— made significant contributions.

Beyond Sherritt and Gibsons’ efforts, Kasey Wright and Miranda Herle played very well defensively and each scored the winning runs in the two walk off victories.

Natalie Caras was a wall on defence, with only one error on 25 plays at 3rd base. Emily Latrace was 3-for-4 with two walks on day one of the champiionhips before a foul ball off the knee limited her play for the weekend.

The Islanders move on to this week’s Canadian Open then U16A Nationals in Montreal in August.

Roadrunners earn bronze at Midget provincials

ichmond Midget A2 Roadrunners completed an outstanding season with a bronze medal finish at B.C. Lacrosse’s provincial championships in Coquitlam.

Richmond had rolled to three straight victories in round-robin play — defeating Surrey (10-2), Kamloops (10-6) and Peninsula (5-2).

Following an 8-2 loss to eventual silver medalists Coquitlam in the semi-finals, the team rebounded with a resilient effort to beat Peninsula once again, 8-6.

Diesel DeGuzman, Forrest Wheeler, Jaden Atkinson, Hunter VanHest and Evan Brusse received game MVP awards over the weekend.

The future looks bright as only five of the 21 rostered players will age up to Intermediate A lacrosse - Connor Dimmick, Van Hest, Wheeler, Yates and DeGuzman.

“All five without question really can play and they will be missed,” said Richmond coach Stu Ruttan.

“The boys found their mojo over the May long weekend and it was good to see.

They really showed signs

of growth engaging in the process.” added Ruttan, “but shortly after that success they slipped back into inconsistent habits and forgot a bit about the process over the remainder of league play.”

Following the completion of an up-and down regular season, the Roadrunners began their road to the bronze medal playing seven tough playoff games.

Richmond battled and won a hard fought three game series against the North Shore Eagles. Following 8-4 loss in the opener and their backs against the wall, they responded with 4-3 and 1110 wins.
