Dear Editor, Re: “Playing Trump card may happen,” Letters, July 6.

I could not agree more with Alan Halliday’s letter to the editor regarding Coun. Derek Dang’s warning about “going Donald Trump.”

Any attempt at a fair and equitable discussion regarding concerns affecting our community, without racist innuendos, seems impossible and falls on deaf ears.

It seems freedom of speech works only in one direction.

Voting after all these years is becoming a heavy burden — I fear that we will end up with more of the same, or worse.

Last month in Vancouver, the Federal government announced an agreement to expand the CPP. Manitoba, with a new Provincial government, did not initially sign on but now has. There are more than enough provinces on board to push the agreement through, and I understand it will happen soon.

ome Richmond city councillors appear to warming up to the idea of a more robust, but regulated, “shared economy” for services such as ride-sharing (Uber) and short-term accommodations (Airbnb).

A report to council on Monday from Neonila Lilova, Richmond’s manager of economic development, noted that, to date, shortterm vacation rentals are operating widely across the city and enforcement of existing regulations has been “largely ineffective.”

Lilova noted that in April there were about 400 Airbnb listings in Richmond, mostly condominiums and secondary suites. Many of these listings are in contravention

to city bylaws and may pose a threat to revenue generated by a two per cent hotel tax (for Tourism Richmond).

Lilova said some Airbnb and VRBO owners have already began remitting hotel taxes to the city.

Lilova concluded that Richmond will advocate to the province’s Minister of Community Sport and Cultural Development for “fair regulations” for short-term rentals.

Coun. Alexa Loo appeared open to the idea of new provincial regulations.

“Here’s an opportunity, on limited cases, for us to open our homes and provide places to stay in Airbnb situations. However, we don’t want our neighbourhoods to turn into some rampant hotel strip, so we need safety, we need reasonability

Cops to Pokemoners: Heads up!

A

smartphone game that’s sweeping the planet has sparked Richmond Mounties into sounding a special warning for the people taking part.

Apparently, players of augmented reality game Pokemon Go are getting so immersed in the bizarre phenomenon that they’re running the risk of putting themselves into Richmond-specific danger — such as falling into ditches or walking off docks.

Millions of people have plunged themselves into Pokemon Go, with tales of gamers being injured or causing public safety concerns across North America this week.

The concern has prompted local police to issue a light-hearted, safety reminder.

“This type of gaming is novel and its early adoption is rather unprecedented,” said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

“It can be very easy to get so caught up in something and ignore safety entirely.

“We really wish to get the safety message out as early as possible. We are also very concerned about the deployment of valuable police resources.”

Hwang said the police don’t “wish to be spoilsports, as many of our officers enjoy gaming too, but we want to make sure that our resources are not tied up investigating Pokémon players . . . Hopefully, our tips will help. Pika Pika!”

Pokemon Go is a smartphone application

that uses location services to explore neighbourhoods for Pokemon monsters that show up on the phone’s video screen, as if they are there in reality.

Akin to geocaching, gamers attempt to collect monsters at different locations.

“There are positive aspects to this game.

It requires players to explore the community by travelling to different places, usually by walking, which, in turn, promotes physical exercise,” said Hwang.

That said, there have been numerous reports of injuries, as gamers do anything in their power to acquire the monsters.

Hwang said gamers should play with at least one friend and be mindful of property.

In less than a week, the mobile app became so popular that Google search data showed Pokemon Go overtook pornography searches.

The app isn’t even available in Canada yet, but millions of Canadians have bypassed the restriction by signing into an American Apple iTunes or Google Play account.

“Monsters” have shown up at various Richmond locations, most notably in Steveston and at Minoru Park.

On Craigslist.ca, for $25 an hour, one Richmond resident offered to be a PokemonGo chauffer for those without the means to drive around the city.

Hwang also warned of the potential for distracted driving.

Concerns have also been raised over Pokemon Go’s lack of security settings, allowing the app’s developer to access everything in one’s Google account, via an iPhone.

s the taxman coming to Richmond?

Leaked documents attributed to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) released Wednesday by the South China Morning Post (SCMP) indicate a bolstered campaign targeting tax cheats in the real estate market.

The documents, at SCMP.com, indicate the CRA will be targeting “individuals living in high-valued areas in B.C. who are reporting minimal income not supporting their lifestyle.”

Notably, the documents do not specifically mention Richmond, but, rather, note that due to “significant media attention regarding the housing market in the Vancouver area and the effects of foreign investment on the availability of affordable housing,” the CRA will be assigning 50 new full-time income tax auditors and 20 GST auditors to B.C. The documents indicate the CRA will target “individuals who are not reporting all of their worldwide income.”

Richmond’s Thompson and Terra Nova neighbourhoods have some of the highest valued homes in Richmond, while — according to census data — concurrently averaging some of the lowest self-reported incomes in the city, bordering on levels of poverty. New homes in the area sell for about $4 million.

Residents of Canada must pay income tax on worldwide income. If a home is occupied by a spouse or even just a child (dependents), then that home is considered a principal residence, and the homeowner is therefore a resident for tax purposes.

But it is believed, by the CRA, that some

people are working abroad, not declaring income, but still declaring residency to reap the benefits of untaxed capital gains on properties, as well as social security benefits.

One page indicates an example of what sort of person the CRA may be targeting: An owner of a $5.8 million home who has claimed the Working Income Tax Benefit.

CRA spokesperson Heidi Hofstad told the News the new auditors will focus on numerous risk factors related to real estate.

The documents indicate the CRA will also target high-end property flips, “where the individual may have claimed a principal residence exemption.”

Homebuilders may also fall under the increasingly watchful eye of the taxman, as those “who flip property on a frequent basis and do not report the corresponding business income or capital gain” may be targeted. Unreported assignment sales will also be sought.

SCMP reporter Ian Young reported that he spoke to the CRA source, who told him the materials were leaked because, “like many people, I’m pretty disgusted by what’s happening here [in the Vancouver real estate market], and a lack of enforcement has been part of the problem.”

The source went on to say that, even with 50 new auditors, they may not be able to make significant in-roads on the problem.

Young wrote that the source suggested CRA bureaucrats previously feared being labelled racist “because the vast majority of these cases, involving high real estate values, involve mainland Chinese.”

In 2015, the CRA conducted 339 B.C. real estate-related audits, recovering $14 million.

YouTubers to head festival Odour delays stink: City

eigning Juno Group of the Year Award winners and international YouTube sensations Walk Off The Earth will headline the second annual Richmond World Festival on Saturday, Sept.

3 in Minoru Park.

Walk Off The Earth had already established a significant global following when their cover of Gotye’s Somebody I Used To Know — featuring all five band members performing the song on a single guitar — went viral on the Internet, with 172 million YouTube views and counting.

That success landed the band a recording contract with Columbia Records and, to date, they’ve accumulated almost half a billion cumulative views, more than 2.3 million subscribers, as well as the 2016 Juno Group of the Year Award.

Joining Walk Off The Earth on the evening YVR Main Stage will be popular local favorites Delhi 2 Dublin, with their bhangra/Celtic mix and other beats that earned them the label “United Nations of rock ‘n’ roll.”

The free, day-long celebration of music food and culture runs from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

“The Richmond World Festival is a fun… celebration of the rich diversity we enjoy in Richmond and all across Canada,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie in a press release.

“It’s a great opportunity to sample the sounds, tastes colours and other unique cultural characteristics that are all part of our community with entertainment and activities for all age groups and interests.”

he City of Richmond is making a stink over delays to odour mitigation efforts by composter Harvest Power.

The city will send a letter to Metro Vancouver — the authority which issues emission permits — urging the two sides to agree to a new permit for the waste-toenergy facility in east Richmond as quickly as possible.

According to both Metro Vancouver and Harvest Power, negotiating a new permit has proved difficult. The sides are nearing the end of a 15-month permit extension and have until Sept. 30 to reach an agreement.

“We are negotiating with Harvest Power and they have proposed some things . . .

We have not had a meeting of minds,” said Ray Robb, Metro Vancouver’s manager of environmental regulatory and enforcement services.

Harvest Power’s existing permit for emissions does not reflect the reality of what the facility emits. For years, smelly odours from residential food scraps have been causing complaints across Richmond. A new permit is expected to allow Harvest Power to emit odours, but Metro Vancouver wants the facility to up its odour mitigation standards, which could prove costly.

Harvest Power’s spokesperson, Stephen Bruyneel, stated the company has done what it can — such as installing new pipes to oxygenate the compost — and is “disappointed” Metro Vancouver has delayed a new permit.

But Robb said negotiations are still required. Metro Vancouver is looking for more improvements, such as how the odour is dispersed into the air.

For example, a new compost facility in Surrey has a 70-metre smoke (odour) stack, while Harvest Power does not.

“They say it’s not feasible. So we are at a point of disagreement on that,” said Robb.

A stack can push odour into the air at high velocity, dispersing the odour quickly, whereas Harvest Power’s odour now seeps out slowly at near ground level, Robb explained, creating a low, slow-moving plume.

“There’s a lot of ground to (make up) between what the company is proposing and what our staff think is a good idea,” said Robb, explaining that Metro Vancouver must balance the private company’s ability to make a profit with the public’s interest to have breathable air.

A city council report noted “the process does not appear to be coming to a conclusion as quickly as the city would like,” and that Harvest Power presently lacks a closed facility and a series of bio-scrubbers, in addition to no stack.

Robb said Metro Vancouver wants odours to go down, but the main focus is ensuring people can’t smell them.

Harvest Power takes roughly 200,000 tonnes of food and garden waste each year and creates compost. It then burns the gas, creating power for roughly 1,000 homes.

Mayor Malcolm Brodie called the company a “responsible corporate citizen,” and expressed confidence the two sides can reach an agreement.

here are plenty of fish in the dating pool, but it was one with a terminal illness that got Cynda Yeasting hooked.

Yeasting joined the online dating website, Plenty of Fish, about nine years ago.

After spending 14 years focusing on her career as a legal administrative assistant and raising two sons after two failed marriages, she was excited to start dating again.

She looked forward to going out for dinners, meeting new people, having fun and possibly finding Mr. Right.

One man caught her interest early on, but that quickly turned into a dud.

“One of the guys I had gone out with, who I thought was very nice, I realized he was cheating on his wife,” Yeasting said.

“I then decided to look for someone who wasn’t on here every night, as Plenty of Fish has a feature where you can see when a person was last online. That’s when I found Michael’s profile.”

Michael Chu’s profile was very open and honest, and he wasn’t online every day, Yeasting explained.

He wrote that he was divorced, had a child, was looking for that one special woman. He also wrote that he was terminally ill, but it was under control.

Intrigued that a man with limited time was looking for love on an online dating site, Yeasting emailed Chu and then they decided to meet.

“When we met, we talked for over two hours and we would have talked through the night if I didn’t have work in the morning,” Yeasting said.

“We had so much in common and there were so many coincidences.”

It turned out that Chu’s mother went to the same Sunday school as Yeasting’s aunt, his dad knew Yeasting’s family, his ex-wife lived across the street from Yeasting’s sister and Yeasting actually met Chu’s uncle in the past.

The two clicked and their relationship progressed quickly. But there were challenges.

“My eldest son was very angry with me because he knew his mom was inevitably going to get hurt,” Yeasting said. “My mother was not happy. She said she would never date somebody with cancer.

“But when people met Michael, he looked so well that they had a hard time

believing that he had stage four cancer.”

Yeasting met Chu’s family and she got on with them well and she actually became friends with Chu’s ex-wife.

The couple also had their share of heated arguments, like all couples, but the two made it a point to not go to bed angry at each other, as their time was limited.

They also went on a couple of trips together, got engaged and lived together in Richmond.

Unfortunately, their relationship only lasted about 19 months. Chu died from lung cancer in August 2008.

“He was the love of my life and I was the love of his life,” Yeasting said, explaining she has no regrets and if given the choice, would not change her decision in pursuing a relationship with Chu. “Life is short. You need to take a chance and enjoy every minute of it.”

Yeasting wrote a book about her experience, titled For Michael, Love Cynda, which helped her mourn Chu’s death.

She will have her first book signing at IndigoSpirit Bookstore in Richmond Centre on Saturday, July 23 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

hristie Ertner and Kimi Nomura Schwab want to start an honest and real conversation around the emotional rollercoaster of motherhood.

With an estimated one in every six women suffering from postpartum depression and/or anxiety (PPD/A) before or after giving birth, Steveston moms Ertner and Nomura Schwab and their recently-formed Van City Mom Squad are hosting an event like no other in the region.

Hoping to attract around 75 new moms to the City Centre Community Centre (C4) on July 26, the pair say PPD/A is often characterized by despondency, emotional instability, anger, guilt, tearfulness, worrying, anxious thoughts or images, feelings of inadequacy and the inability to cope.

Nomura Schwab said the Pacific Post Partum Support Society (PPPSS) normally hosts or takes part in smaller events or gatherings, “but nothing on this scale.”

“PPD carries such a strong stigma,” says Van City Mom Squad co-founder Nomura Schwab, 31, whose son, Grey, is seven months.

“Motherhood is supposed to be such a ‘blissful’ experience and I find a lot of moms want to paint a perfect picture of motherhood because of this.

“We want to have a very honest conversation around the joys, but also the challenges, of motherhood.

“Although this is a more serious subject, it’s still very much a social event.”

At the event, women can meet other moms, share their experiences and listen to candid stories about what happens when feelings of excitement, exhaustion and elation from pregnancy and birth converge at once.

It’s a Vancouver-based affiliate of a program originally developed a decade ago in Indianapolis, Indiana that uses boxing drills to form a non-contact series of exercises tailored to help those with Parkinson’s.

And although he’s only been at it for three, weekly sessions, the effects are already showing.

“My wife tells me that when I come back, I look like a younger guy,” Fatteded quipped.

“But come back in 10 or 12 weeks’ time and I’ll have a much better feeling for what kind of effect it’s had.”

He’s upped the number of rounds at Quilchena to three to four times a week.

He works out in his home gym with weights and does exercises to improve his balance.

He’s even picked up his drum sticks on a more regular basis.

“I used to be part of a teenage idol rock band growing up in Hong Kong called the Kontinentals,” Fattedad said.

“It was made up of a bunch of schoolmates at King George V school. We were from everywhere – England, Sweden and Canada.”

They became pretty popular on the local Hong Kong music scene playing a lot of British pop music of the day, including the Beatles, and Fatteded was their Ringo Starr.

Most of the group ended up reconvening in Vancouver in the early 1960s and became Five Man Cargo.

Five Man Cargo became one of the top bands of the day in Vancouver and were managed by a then-young Bruce Allen, who is now agent to stars such as Michael Buble, Bryan Adams and Jann Arden.

“We played at Marco Polo, The Fifth Day Club, The Breakers down in Point Roberts and Lassiter’s Den in East Vancouver,” Fattedad said.

oday, the drums serve as a good workout.

And he knows the importance of remaining with the program he’s set out for himself, staying motivated and active.

“I guess it’s matter of sticking to the job at hand and fighting my way through,” he said.

“Having Parkinson’s, it’s a constant reminder that if I don’t push myself I will start feeling it.”

While he admits to not being one who’s comfortable doing their own thing in a gym, Fattedad said he enjoys the structure and camaraderie found with the Rock Steady Boxing group.

“I like being in a class. And I know I get out of it, the work I put into it,” he said.

“Plus, I never say die.”

t’s common knowledge that regular exercise is an important part of maintaining overall good health.

But can it help battle Parkinson’s disease?

Matthew Sacheli, a PhD student at UBC`s Pacific Parkinson’s Research Centre, is heading up an exercise research program to find out what effect it may have.

“What we’re looking at is the mechanisms of exercise and Parkinson’s disease,” Sacheli told the News.

“What I mean by that is, we know exercise is beneficial for Parkinson’s, but no one knows why.”

To find the answer, the study is using a variety of imaging techniques including Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (FMRI) — a procedure using MRI technology that measures brain activity by detecting changes associated with blood flow — and Positron Emission Tomography (PET), that allows a view of specific brain changes at a cellular level.

“PET allows us to see specific cellular changes that occur, so how dopamine cells, which we know are important in Parkinson’s, might change with exercise,” he said.

“And FMRI allows us to see how different brain circuitry changes in response to exercise.”

Dopamine functions as a neurotransmitter — a chemical released by neurons (nerve cells) to send signals to other nerve cells.

Subjects enrolled in the study undergo a three-month exercise program and their brain scans are compared to a baseline taken earlier for comparison.

“We are also looking at the long-term changes and purchase gym memberships for the subjects for three years and encourage them to continue exercising,” Sacheli said. “Then after three years, we track the disease progression.”

To date, the study is into its third year.

“We plan to be done with our data collection for the three-month portions by the end of this year. And then we do the follow up portion,” Sacheli said.

The study will also compare how exercise affects those test subjects who have been active their entire lives and those who have not.

The program is currently accepting people aged 40 to 80-years-old, as long as they are able to be physically active.

And how about lacing up the boxing gloves for some non-contact training?

“There’s certain aspects to the boxing which I think are fantastic,” he said. “But I’m not sure if it’s that which makes the difference, or if the people are just up and moving in a fun, group manner.”

In that respect, a big part in improvement may also have to do with the social aspect fitness groups can have, added Sacheli.

Participating staff members were also served a three-course meal, ending with Maenam’s Thai iced tea panna cotta with basil sugar and pine nut praline, which was received with rave reviews.

It was a highly interactive time of learning and students and staff alike had the opportunity to ask questions and chat with this knowledgeable, accomplished, yet humble chef.

Below is a quick Q & A with chef Angus: 1. Where were you born and raised?

I’ve always loved food and cooking but didn’t know this was to be my career until second year at university.

8. What words of advice do you have for young people contemplating a career in the food industry?

One person who might be able to bring those stories to life is the terminal’s former in-house barber, Franco Ingenito, who retired last month after cutting hair and shaving faces at the airport for the last 46 years.

During that time, he’s styled everything from crew cuts to faux hawks to manbuns, serving big names such as hockey great Jean Beliveau, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, David Emerson and, of course, countless airport employees and travellers. ‘He’s a very nice person and a very strong worker,’ said one of Franco’s colleagues. ‘People admire him. While the GS F has a modern, contemporary look, Lexus took a more traditional approach under the hood. Most carmakers are switching to smaller displacement engines boosted by turbochargers, but the GS F features a proven 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8.

The big V8 is a joy to drive and because of it, the GS F offers a unique appeal that is a rarity in today’s marketplace. And, thanks to its 467 hp and 389 lb-ft of torque, it’s mighty fast, too, sprinting to 100km/h in just 4.6 seconds.

However, the GS F is not just fast in a straight line.

Lexus has reworked the suspension setup of the standard GS to give the GS F its own character. You never forget about the sheer size of the GS F, though, but the body roll is subdued and contained.

Lexus gave the GS F a new traction control and electronic stability program. This helps it achieve maximum grip throughout the corner by varying the amount of power sent to the two rear drive wheels.

offers four different drive settings. The eight-speed automatic transmission feels like a sequential manual when in Sport-plus mode, with lightning quick gear changes while using the steering wheel-mounted shifters. The other settings, Eco, Normal and Sport, also alter throttle response and steering weight.

Powered by a big V8, it’s not surprising that the GS F doesn’t have the best fuel economy. Also, keep in mind it will be difficult to match Lexus’ claimed 12.5L/100km combined rating if you happen to run into heavy traffic or fancy a spirited run.

About the only downside is that the ride can be surprisingly firm and stiff, to the point where you would likely not drive this vehicle too often in the stiffest suspension mode.

As mentioned, the cabin of the GS F is highly comfortable and allows you to drive for hours without getting tired or bored. The standard 17-speaker premium audio system helps pass the time.

Lexus has earned a reputation for making some of the most luxurious interiors in the industry, and the GS F doesn’t disappoint. The front seats hold you firmly and the thick leather steering wheel feels great in hand.

LYNN Swainston wasn’t sure whether she needed a divorce lawyer or a parrot, but she knew something had to be done about her husband John’s hearing problems.

“To be honest we were borderline for the divorce courts because we were bickering all the time. Every time I spoke to John I had to repeat myself and after a while it gets a bit wearing. You start wondering whether it’s because he can’t hear you, or because he has selective hearing.”

YVR’s president and CEO, Craig Richmond, is one of the guest speakers at a symposium today (July 15) discussing the potential economic impact of direct flights between Vancouver and New Delhi, India. Air Canada announced earlier this year that starting on Oct. 20 they will be offering a seasonal, three times weekly, non-stop flight between YVR and Indira Gandhi International Airport in time for Diwali celebrations. The event is being hosted by the BC India Business Network at the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel in Downtown Vancouver.

So, I re-loaded my Starbucks card with $25, got my points, which brought me closer to a reward, and spent only three or four dollars. Now, I had a balance.

“So, the next time when I am out and want a coffee and see a Waves coffee shop on one side of the street and a Starbucks on the other, which one am I going to go into? It will be the Starbucks because I won’t have to spend any more money.

“And the pattern continues.”

Clark got into the business world 26 years ago when he was just 16, when his father turned over the day-to-day running of a fabric glue called Speed-Sew. “My dad acquired a company and gave it to me and my brothers to learn business through reality instead of theory. And I am still running it,” he said. “And the biggest thing about doing that is you have real clients with real money, real timelines and deadlines. And you have to deliver a quality product, otherwise people stop buying it.”

It also drove him to create his own future.

“The thought of getting up and going to work for someone else doesn’t work for me. I like being in control of my time.”

MDA nets new satellite deal Richmond’s MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. recently announced it signed a $48.5 million contract with the Government of Canada to deliver an advanced broad-area global maritime and Arctic surveillance satellite, called Polar Epsilon 2 (PE2). The contract includes two years of in-service support to operate and maintain the systems.

The contract also has options which could increase the contract value to $63.1 million. PE2 will provide Canada’s Department of National Defence with daily maritime information over millions of square kilometers, all within minutes of imaging. Dolphin Classic all set for South Arm debut T

he latest chapter in the Dolphin Basketball Classic gets underway Friday afternoon.

The 31st annual four-onfour outdoor tournament will make its debut at the South Arm Community Centre — just a few blocks away from the tiny neighbourhood park where the event was established. It has spent the past several years at the Thompson Community Centre before organizers had a chance to bring it closer to its original roots.

Games will take place on South Arm’s two polypropylene Sport Court surfaces that were built back in 2010.

“It’s really exciting to be back in our old neighbourhood, at least being in the same neck of the woods where this all started,” said Bruce Watson. “The Thompson group was tremendous to us but this just feels right and (South Arm area coordinator) Steve (Mahon) has been amazing to work with.

“We wanted a more intimate setting like we had

This year is no exception.

“It’s going to be a very competitive weekend,” predicts Watson. “You’re going to see some players up here from the Seattle area and that has really added to the tournament in recent years.”

Games get underway at 5 p.m. on Friday and continue right through to the men’s championship game at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The women’s final is slated for 5 p.m. while the ever-popular slam

dunk and 3-point contests will take place between the finals.

Here are some of the teams to watch this weekend: Men’s Academy: Reached the finals last year, led by former UBC standout and European pro Doug Plumb.

AthElite: A perennial power that never can be counted out. Aman Heran is one of the purest shooters in tournament history and defending 3-point champion.

TRU: Look for Scott Clark to have a very competitive team after guiding Thompson Rivers to the CIS Final Eight last season.

Running Rebels: Captain Steve Lee’s squad can also be counted to be in the playoff picture come Sunday afternoon.

Rapid Motors: Look for this team to have a heavy Seattle University flavour.

Captain Roopi Clair is the brother of Redhawks junior and former Burnaby South star Manroop Clair.

AIA: Another solid entry, led by former Yale star and provincial MVP Marek Klassen who is currently playing pro in Great Britain after an impressive collegiate career at Point Loma.

SB Battle: Jelani Mohammed’s squad has enjoyed plenty of success on the outdoor men’s baseball circuit.

Women’s Chaos: Seattle University grad Elle Kerfoot leads her team back as defending champions.

Fusion: The 2014 champions look to recapture the title, led by former Bishops star Katy Germain.

Cascades: A squad built around the University of the Fraser Valley women’s team makes its tournament debut.

The recently turned 17-year-old was back home from Edmonton long enough to re-pack her bags before heading off to Poland Wednesday to begin preparations for the IAAF World U20 Track and Field Championships. Rogers secured her spot on the Canadian team after a strong showing in the Alberta capital last weekend at the Canadian Track and Field Championships — winning the junior women’s hammer throw and shot put events.

It was two months earlier when the Kajaks member achieved the Junior World standard for the hammer in her own backyard — at the Richard Collier Throws Fest at Minoru Park — with a personal best toss of 59.73 metres.

What makes the accomplishment even more impressive is she will be one of the youngest members of the Canadian and is eligible to compete again at the next Junior Worlds in Finland in 2018.

Her spot on the Canadian team wasn’t made official until the selection committee saw her compete in Edmonton as well.

“It was basically a check-up just to make sure I was capable (of achieving that distance again),” explained Rogers. “It is so exciting and something I have been thinking about since last summer.

Rogers’ wasn’t in top form for the hammer event at Nationals but still comfortably won gold with a best throw of 56.72 metres. The surprise proved to be her breakthrough in shot put.

With all her focus on making sure she was up to the Canadian team distances in the hammer event, Rogers delivered a personal best in the shot put with a toss of 13.77 — nearly 20 centimetres better than her previous best mark set in Bellingham back in May. “I had no clue that was coming,” she laughed. “I had been dropping weight in training and really focusing on my speed and technique so it was a big surprise.”

The Grade 12 McMath Secondary student says her goal in Bydgoszcz is to qualify for the hammer throw finals. That will take a top 12 finish in preliminaries to advance and likely breaking the 62 metre barrier which we be a personal best by a significant margin.

Hammer throw qualification is scheduled for July 21. The finals would take place two days later.

“You have to set your goals high,” added Rogers who smashed the provincial high school record in the hammer throw last month by four metres. “I’m hoping that environment and level of competition is going to really push me.”

Her summer competition schedule will conclude at next month’s Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships in Set There/Blainville, Quebec.

Gourmet Mushroom Risotto via PREP 20

Ingredients

Original recipe makes 6 servings 6 cups chicken broth, divided 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided 1 pound portobello mushrooms, thinly sliced 1 pound white mushrooms, thinly sliced 2 shallots, diced 1 1/2 cups Arborio rice

1/2 cup dry white wine sea salt to taste freshly ground black pepper to taste 3 tablespoons finely chopped chives 4 tablespoons butter 1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Directions 1. In a saucepan, warm the broth over low heat.

2. Warm 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir in the mushrooms, and cook until soft, about 3 minutes. Remove mushrooms and their liquid, and set aside.

3. Add 1 tablespoon olive oil to skillet, and stir in the shallots. Cook 1 minute. Add rice, stirring to coat with oil, about 2 minutes. When the rice has taken on a pale, golden color, pour in wine, stirring constantly until the wine is fully absorbed.

Add 1/2 cup broth to the rice, and stir until the broth is absorbed. Continue adding broth 1/2 cup at a time, stirring continuously, until the liquid is absorbed and the rice is al dente, about 15 to 20 minutes.

4. Remove from heat, and stir in mushrooms with their liquid, butter, chives, and parmesan.

Season with salt and pepper to taste.
