All dog owners should pay price ALANCAMPBELL Really?

I

magine someone pointing an air gun at you from about 10 feet and firing a pellet at your chest. It’s gonna hurt, right?

Now imagine, from a similar distance, the same yahoo taking aim at your torso with an assault rifle and letting rip.

Can you feel the difference?

It kind of vexes thee a tad when — in the context of the do-we, don’t-we ban pit bulls debate — people start comparing the number of bites from pit bull-type breeds and other dogs, such as German Shepherds and those vicious, little Jack Russell terriers. Really?

I know what multiple Jack Russell bites feel like, having been surrounded by a pack of them while delivering letters as a mailman.

It wasn’t pleasant. And I had to be saved by the dogs’ seven-year-old “owner.”

But one tetanus injection and a “there, there” from my wife and I was bravely back out on the bike the next day.

Joking aside, the argument over muzzling and/or banning specific breeds is a serious issue for all concerned, not least for the Bird couple featured in today’s Richmond News, who were forced to abandon their Steveston roots and relocate to Tsawwassen to provide quality of life for their blind pet, which has some pit bull in its mixed breeding.

I empathize with them, I really do. I’m a dog owner and if the authorities ever ban or legislate the life out of Scots terrier/daschund/Labrador crossbreeds that look like Donkey out of Shrek, then I’d also have to consider shipping out to a municipality that’s more, shall we say, “tolerant” of my pet’s DNA. I get it. All dogs can be “dangerous” to varying degrees. The trouble I have with comparing across breeds is that when dogs, other than pit bull types, bite, hospitalization, surgery and permanent disfigurement is rarely required.

They don’t bite that often, but when they do, the results tend to need more than a tetanus and a few soothing words.

As it stands, Richmond requires a leash and a muzzle when any pit bull type dog is in public. The pro-pit bull camp, including the Birds, claims, however, that such rules don’t reduce the number of incidents and a lack of enforcement renders the bylaws worthless.

What I do like the sound of — and it’s in reporter Graeme Wood’s feature on page 12 — is the suggestion by an MLA and a vet to hold dog owners, no matter what breed their pet is, liable for any unprovoked attacks.

Liability = responsibility = prevention.

And, by default, if an owner is worried over getting sued for millions, one wonders how quickly he or she might rush to buy from a breeder a pit bull type dog to have and behold as a family pet?

The sigh of disbelief

Dear Editor, Re: “Petition filed as non-resident births rise,” News, July 6.

After reading reporter Graeme Wood’s article, I wonder how many among the nonresidents, who seem to have the big bucks to spend, enjoy the subsidy of our health care program just because they qualify as “low income?”

Our city is a city of magic. We have disappearing schools, trees, communities, house owners, heritage houses, mom and pop shops and perhaps there are a lot more that dropped out of sight, but, because I blinked hard and long, I did not catch them as they were swallowed into the black hole.

Of course, to be a fantastic magic show, some things should also re-appear.

Abracadabra, we see mega houses, foreign language signs, apologists, the “R” card and, now, non-resident births.

And, yes, in a magic show we let out our “oooohs” and “aaaahs,” but in this show, all that is coming from me is a big sigh.

Not of relief, but a sigh of disbelief and disappointment. And then, I realize I am not alone. It is heartening to read letters from the likes of Mr. Halliday, Mr. Arnold and all the other Richmond residents who truly care for this city…and our country.

Sound of trustee silence Open letter to Richmond School District trustees, Where are you? You have been awfully quiet in the past few weeks.

Are you concerned that standing up for students and families in Richmond will cause Mike Bernier, Minister of Education, to fire all of you?

Personally, I would be more concerned about the voters firing you. The lack of opposition against the provincial government’s demands to balance the district budget (shortfall of $3.3M this year) and to increase the district utilization requirement to 95 per cent, seems to give off the impression that you find this

acceptable. The Vancouver School Board has been nothing short of vocal. The VSB chooses to advocate for more education funding, as well as pressuring the government to waive the utilization requirement. The VSB voted against balancing their district budget at the risk of losing their jobs.

Meanwhile, our trustees are losing the confidence of parents here in Richmond.

If I recall correctly, the petition that was circulating for over four weeks in the spring was not even endorsed by them. It’s awfully quiet out there. I hear nothing but crickets.

Sad situation, but no variation Sim v. Sim Estate (reasons were released this week) is a Wills Variation case brought by the children of a deceased father.

Their mother died at a young age and most of the children left home early, a result of overly stern discipline.

The father remarried in 1971, and had two children with his new wife. He died in 2012. His Estate was small (about $73,000). However, he took out an insurance policy, payable on the deaths of himself and his wife, that would give each of his five children a benefit of $50,000. The five children were otherwise disinherited under his Will.

The deceased was survived by his five children, wife and two other children. The five children sought a variation of his Will.

The Court denied the claim, but did order that the insurance policy stand and the surviving wife continue paying the premiums so that the children would receive their benefit on her death. In denying the children’s claim, the Court first found that the deceased owed no legal duty to his five children, as they were all independent.

Despite his stern treatment of them, the Court held that a Will variation was not a remedy for abuse and the Estate was legally too small to allow a variation. This Estate was made even smaller by the deceased having taken out an insurance policy and paying all the premiums.

The facts in this case, though unfortunate, truly did not justify a variation of the Will.

Richmond couple has been ordered to stop running an underground acupuncture clinic from their home that was serving clients as far back as 2004, according to seized records.

According to the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of BC (CTCMA), Vancouver Coastal Health Authority contacted the CTCMA in February to report an anonymous complaint that acupuncture was being practiced illegally at a private residence on Colville Road registered to tenants Jhan Jhan Lee and Wai Cheong Chik.

Surveillance operations were conducted by private investigators hired by the CTCMA that revealed during a three-day span business being was being conducted on a large scale, including a report of more than 140 vehicles arriving and leaving the home.

covered thousands of acupuncture needles and hypodermic syringes, prescription-only pharmaceuticals, and clinical records involving thousands of patients from 2004 to March 2016.

On June 30 in B.C. Supreme Court permanent injunctions against the couple were issued. In addition, the court awarded CTCMA costs of more than $36,000.

“These two individuals are examples of the imposters that prey on the public, providing cheap unregulated health care to vulnerable unwell people. The solution is very simple: every regulatory college has a website with a list of its registrants – make sure that the health practitioner you are going to is listed,” stated Dr. Mary Watterson, registrar of the CTCMA on its website.

uts to Richmond Public Library’s 2016 budget have resulted in numerous complaints from the public, concerning matters such as reduced hours, increased fines and cut services, according to a staff report presented to city council’s finance committee Monday.

Chief librarian Greg Buss noted rising library operating costs — a bone of contention among many on council — are due to keeping paperback collections intact, while simultaneously expanding its digital materials.

“The pressure is to do two things as well as we can, and perhaps we don’t do either as well as the public expects,” said Buss.

With fewer late fees, overall revenues are projected to be down by 7.5 per cent in 2017.

In 2011 the City of Richmond contributed $7.7 million to libraries, while in 2017 it is expected to contribute $9 million.

And yet, among Metro Vancouver municipalities, Richmond actually funds its libraries below the regional average of $53.63 per

capita, with just $41.26 in likewise spending. According to the report, Richmond has the highest physical and online visits per capita.

In the report, Richmond’s financial planners have effectively given councillors two options: accept the rising costs or make more cuts.

Coun. Alexa Loo said if the city is to keep its taxes relatively low, people can expect less service.

“I think we need to take a long look at this,” said Loo, who agreed to the cuts last year.

Couns. Bill McNulty and Linda McPhail voted against the library cuts. McNulty, who also voted against tax hikes in the last budget, said Monday that the city ought to up its per capita funding by one dollar.

Coun. Carol Day voted for the cuts last year, likening it to a pencil sharpening exercise. On Monday she told the committee, “the (cut) hours have really affected people.”

As a result of the changes, an email survey conducted by the library found about 80 per cent of the comments received were negative.

ix passengers who survived a fatal plane

crash near the Vancouver airport nearly five years ago have gotten clearance to have their lawsuits heard in court.

Joe Fiorante, a lawyer for five of the passengers, said his clients were “pleased” with a ruling that allows them to proceed with their injury claims through the courts rather than have them dealt with through workers’ compensation.

“Legally, they’re much better off with being able to pursue their civil rights in court rather than being limited to workers’ compensation benefits. That’s not always the case, but in this case for sure,” he said.

Northern Thunderbird Air Inc., which owned and operated the aircraft and is being sued by the passengers, and the plaintiffs applied to the Workers Compensation Appeal Tribunal (WCAT) to determine whether the crash injuries arose out of and in the course of employment.

tion called TEC Canada Ltd. The passengers were members of a small “subgroup” of TEC. In February 2015, WCAT found that some of the factors supported an employment connection and others did not. It concluded that the injuries did not arise out of and in the course of their employment. The airline then filed a petition seeking an order setting aside the tribunal’s decision and sending the matter back for reconsideration.

But in her ruling, B.C.

Supreme Court Justice Wendy Baker concluded that the tribunal’s decision was not patently unreasonable and dismissed the company’s petition.

The lawsuits allege the company and/or its employees were negligent.

The passengers aboard the small King Air 100 aircraft were pulled to safety after the plane crash-landed on Russ Baker Way, slid across the road and burst into flames. The two pilots, Luc Fortin and Matthew Robic, were also rescued, but died later from burns.

A

century-old sea tragedy will be remembered at noon on Sunday at Garry Point Park when descendants from the crew of the Onward Ho! gather at the Fisherman’s Memorial to pay their respects.

It was on Jan. 6, 1916, that the ill-fated ship left Steveston Harbour to fish for halibut off Cape Spencer, Alaska before vanishing from the icy waters.

Loaded down with a reported 180,000 pounds of fish, battling stormy weather and a treacherous build-up of ice on the decks — rendering her top-heavy — the vessel presumably capsized, taking all 30 or more of her crew down with her.

No remains of the ship or her crew, some of whom were natives of Norway, were ever found. Left behind were wives and children, some of whom will be represented by family members at Sunday’s memorial.

Some will come from the Lower Mainland, and others will have made the trek from Norway, where earlier this year, another memorial was held.

One of the descendants is Langley’s Mark Hutchinson, the great-grandson of first mate Hedley Hughes.

His wife, Marian Buechert, told the News the event has mostly been organized by family members of the crew from Norway.

Kristin Overaas, greatgranddaughter of the Onward Ho!’s cook, Jens Bendicksen Aas, hosted the memorial there about a month ago, Buechert said, adding that ceremony took place unbeknownst to her.

“We found out about a month ago,” she said, when she received an invitation for the Steveston event.

The Onward Ho!’s crew was made up of a mixture of immigrants and locals. It’s not known how many may have lived in Richmond at the time. First mate Hughes came from New Westminster, Buechert said.

“He’d moved there with several members of his family, from (Digby) Nova Scotia,” she said. “Other members of the crew were immigrants, mostly from Norway and maybe one Dane.”

Buechert said the accounts of the sinking were heart-breaking.

“They sailed out on the 12th day of Christmas, the weather wasn’t great and when they got out into that area of Alaska, apparently there was a huge ice storm and their hold was already full of halibut,” she said.

“They were also pretty iced over that that point. You just kind of imagine the crew chopping away frantically, trying to clear the deck in what turned out to be a hopeless cause,” Buechert said.

“Then, there were all the wives waiting at home. Mrs. Hughes had five children and would have been left to her own devices to raise

them. It was very sad.”

Sad, too, was the fact Hedley wasn’t even supposed to be on the ship.

Buechert said he was added to the crew as a last-minute replacement for another man who had injured his leg.

The tragedy, though significant in scale, was likely passed over at the time, due to the myriad of losses reported during the First World War, Buechert said.

In respect for the loss, names of most of the crew were added to the memorial at Garry Point in 2014.

The remainder have been requested to be added.

On Sunday, the family, which will also include the granddaughter of Hughes, will cast red roses on the waters off Garry Point — one for each crew member.

wo Rottweilers run wild around a neighbourhood, biting a construction worker in the process, thus leading to a drawn out legal battle with the City of Richmond. A pit bull-cross spooks police officers during an investigation, causing one to shoot at it. A Rottweiler-cross mauls a young woman and a senior man. A German Shepherd gets loose and lacerates a mailman’s leg. A pit bullterrier attacks a woman at its home, sending her to hospital for facial surgery.

These are just a sample of the hundreds of dog attack investigations Richmond bylaw officers have conducted over the past two years.

To be certain, Richmond is not immune to an increasingly simmering nationwide debate over labeling certain dogs, particularly pit bulls, as “dangerous” and enacting breed specific legislation.

In all of the above cases, save for, perhaps, the latter, the owners were not present at the time of the attack and/or confrontation.

For some, such as the BCSPCA, targeting certain breeds in municipal bylaws to reduce dog attacks has no scientific basis and does not address irresponsible dog owners. Meanwhile, others, such as attack victims, insist blanket legislation against powerful dogs, such as pit bulls and Staffordshire terriers, is necessary, as the risk involved with such animals is too great to leave it to human masters to handle on their own.

Bird acknowledges the power of pit bulls but contends Richmond doesn’t encourage responsible dog ownership.

“A large dog will always do more damage, it doesn’t matter what the breed is,” said Bird.

“But with all these bites happening in Richmond, nothing happens to those dogs unless they do something drastic. Zero happens here. We’ve had small dogs that have bitten multiple people and nothing happens. So the current bylaws in Richmond haven’t saved any of those bites and there’s no enforcement. There are pit bulls running around with no leash. We have bylaws and they only affect responsible owners.

“It’s not based on behaviour, it’s based on what someone thinks Peanut looks like,” added Bird.

Bird said dogs shouldn’t have to wear muzzles automatically. However, she said she would accept, at the very least, a system in place whereby she could have Peanut certified in some manner by going through a training regimen, in order to have the muzzle requirement and dangerous dog status removed. Bird said Nanaimo provides for such an opportunity. Late last year Richmond councilors expressed no interest in doing so.

The Birds also want to see Richmond up its fines for irresponsible dog owners: increase licence enforcement, raise fines for aggressive behaviour, and issue more tickets for off-leash dogs.

There are no repercussions for the owner,” said Shawn.

“And there’s none in Richmond,” said Bird.

“All I want from the City of Richmond is to just review its bylaws,” said Bird.

The City of New Westminster recently revamped its animal control bylaws, which do not target specific breeds. Instead, New West now has broader and more punitive fines than Richmond for infractions. New Westminster animal control coordinator Nancy Millar said since the changes last year, dog bites went down 30 per cent but have since levelled off. Millar said there was “overwhelming evidence” breed specific bylaws (BSBs) don’t work.

“Overall, New Westminster allows for more of a range and provides a policy that punishes even the slightest of aggressive behaviour,” noted Bird.

Meanwhile, “Richmond’s current bylaw has gaps where animals can display aggressive behaviour and get away with it.”

n Pit bulls are too powerful

Countering Bird’s claims is the National Pit Bull Victim Awareness group.

“Richmond is very fortunate to have breed legislation for pit bull type dogs,” said member Mia Johnson, a Vancouver resident, via email.

“It is very important for people to know that penalties for owners whose dogs attack is a good start, but as a single measure is insufficient. Penalizing owners after an attack is not the same as preventing attacks in the first place. Breed specific legislation (BSL) seeks to cut down on the number of attacks, maulings, severe injuries, emergency surgeries, facial reconstructions, amputations and even death by pit bull type dogs through preventative measures,” said Johnson, while noting pit bull attacks are disproportionate to others.

Johnson doesn’t buy the “responsible” dog owner argument.

“Owners are rarely present during an attack, and if they are, can rarely stop an attack. In June 2016, 23 people were attacked by pit bulls in B.C.” “The pit bull is the dog of choice for dog fighting for very good reasons. For the same reasons, they are not suitable as pets,” said Johnson, adding she sympathizes with city councilors, who have been “lobbied to death” by pro-pit bull groups.

Johnson notes that when it comes to human deaths and serious injuries, pit bulls are by far the most common cause.

Disagreeing with the notion that BSBs are the solution is the BCSPCA, which has been openly critical of Richmond’s approach, as it contends it fails to proactively educate its residents about responsible dog ownership and does little to punish owners.

“We oppose breed specific bylaws as a strategy to reducing dog bites and aggression,” said Amy Morris, BCSPCA policy outreach officer.

Morris contends policies such as Richmond’s, fail to promote proper animal behaviour education and training by dog owners, which can reduce dog

bites from all breeds, not just pit bulls and terriers. Additionally, Morris notes the public, in general, doesn’t understand cues dogs give off when they feel threatened.

Furthermore, Morris notes pit bull is not a breed, but rather a mix of dogs, some which have been bred to act aggressively, others which have been used as “nanny dogs.”

Poor and unregulated breeding standards, uneducated dog owners and a lack of standardized training regiments are obstacles to shedding the misnomer of breed specific bylaws, noted Morris.

“The nurture moment is really important.

Dogs have a critical upraising stage from four to 12 weeks. That moment is so important for a dog’s life,” said Morris.

Furthermore, Morris is critical of the lack of responsibility owners have regarding their dogs.

Taking up the issue of responsibility in B.C. is Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver, who introduced legislation this year to make owners of a dog that injures a person 100 per cent liable, save for instances where the dog was provoked.

“What’s missing is that it’s very difficult to have the animal owner found liable after an attack,” said Weaver. “The dog owner can buy another dog the next day and there are no consequences,” he noted.

Weaver said he personally disagrees with breed specific legislation.

However, in the absence of adequate laws set by the province, Weaver said, “I understand why [some municipalities] have BSB. I respect the autonomy of the City of Richmond to introduce them.”

Weaver thinks better legislation to make the owner more responsible could open the door to having more dogs of all breeds wearing a muzzle. On the flip side, it could mean municipalities could relax their BSBs, allowing folks such as the Birds to choose freely how they handle their dog in public.

“When you put liability on the owners, they have to think very carefully how they handle their animal. You might think twice about having that dog run around freely in the park where there are children,” said Weaver.

He added that liability insurance for all dogs should be required. Notably, in New Westminster, when a dog is declared dangerous the owner must purchase liability insurance of no less than $1 million. No such requirement exists in Richmond.

Insurance requirements could make people second-guess high-risk dogs, said Weaver.

Morris is also asking that the provincial government to introduce standardized training and breeding practices.

Whether education and improved animal rights legislation will work is still a matter of debate, which is muddied by various studies that use sporadic data collected by municipalities across the country.

National Pit-

Bull Victim Awareness cites studies indicating how when Winnipeg banned pit bulls in 1990 it saw dog bites reduced. It also cites how in Calgary — which doesn’t have BSBs — pit bulls were the second most frequent biters in 2013.

Ontario banned pit bulls province-wide in 2005 after high-profile attacks sparked reaction from the public. But dog bites didn’t go down in Toronto and have actually risen since then, according to medical reports (albeit so has the population). In 2012 at a standing committee at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, Dr. Dale Scott, of the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association, stated breed-specific dog bans are not an effective way to deal with dangerous dogs.

“Research clearly shows that a more effective approach to dealing with dangerous dogs is improving bite prevention education and implementing non-breed-specific dangerous dog laws, enacted to place the primary responsibility for a dog’s behaviour on the owner, regardless of the dog’s breed; in particular, targeting irresponsible dog owners,”

said Scott.

In 1996, Toronto studied its dog bite incidents, noted Scott. The study found one per cent of pit bulls were involved in attacks while five per cent of labs and six per cent of German Shepherds lashed out.

“To summarize, there is no scientific data on which to base the conclusion that a breedbased ban is the answer,” said Scott.

Perhaps a more neutral observer of the issue was Nancy Clarke, a University of B.C. masters of science thesis candidate, who noted a U.S. statistical study showing pit bulls accounted for about 25 per cent of all human fatalities related to dog attacks.

However, Clarke noted Calgary introduced more educational measures and reduced dog bites five-fold while Winnipeg chose BSBs and bites went down by just half.

Improved ticketing and licensing was shown to reduce dog bite incidents elsewhere.

“In light of the lack of evidence of any effect of breed-specific legislation in reducing dog bite incidence, this strategy requires further investigation and analysis,” concluded Clarke.

Wood, now a real estate agent in the Fraser Valley, worked at a kiosk that sold convenience items — gum, smokes, batteries, film — and rented strollers.

Wood also volunteered — the best way to see Expo for free, she said — at the Folklife exhibit showcasing Canada’s First Nations cultures and early settler life.

“They had all sorts of exhibits, if I remember correctly, about early life in Canada,” she said. “One thing I do remember is they had a show of Quebecois step-dancing. Lots of stomping around and music.”

Expo 86 was the biggest event B.C. had ever seen in 1986. The World’s Fair drew 22 million visitors to the north side of False Creek over six months.

“Expo 86 was a pivotal event in the city’s history, one that showcased Vancouver to the world, bringing global recognition and praise,” noted Vancouver Coun. George Affleck in a recent council motion seeking support for an anniversary party. “The infrastructure contributions from Expo 86 include the SkyTrain Expo Line, Science World, BC Place Stadium, Canada Place and the Plaza of Nations...”

Prince Charles and Princess Diana officially opened Vancouver’s World’s Fair on May 2, 1986. The 70-hectare (173-acre) fairgrounds boasted 65 pavilions showcasing countries, provinces, territories and corporations. The exposition closed Oct. 13, 1986 with a final attendance figure of 22,111,578.

Richmond wasn’t directly involved with the big show.

Expo 86, as longtime local Coun. Harold Steves noted, was Vancouver’s party — unlike the 2010 Olympics, which had a dramatic effect here in Richmond.

Of course, many Richmond residents bought Expo passes — some companies even had payroll deduction plans to cover the cost of season passes — and CP Air proudly boasted it was the official airline of Expo 86. But the fair didn’t cross the Fraser River.

Yet, thanks to former B.C. premier Bill Vander Zalm, a piece of Expo 86 culture did come to Richmond after the fair ended. Remarkably, it’s still here today.

In 1987, a crew from Nickel Bros. house movers spent several weeks uprooting and moving of a Dutch castle — an Expo 86 attraction — to Richmond from its foundation in Downtown Vancouver.

The castle is a replica of the Coeverden Castle in the Netherlands — the ancestral home of explorer Captain George Vancouver.

Vander Zalm bought the structure and had it barged from False Creek to No. 5 Road and Steveston Highway, where it became part of his theme park Fantasy Garden World.

“It was a phenomenal event,” said Vander Zalm about the move. “Hundreds of people followed the castle down the streets of Vancouver, particularly Howe Street. It was two o’clock in the morning and they took all the wiring down. The castle moved

down the street with police cars up front and behind, as I recall it.”

Launched near the Burrard Street Bridge, the castle-laden barge was piloted to the south end of No. 5 Road. Once on land, a truck moved it into place at Fantasy Garden World.

“We used it for a Christmas store. Initially for a time we were thinking it could be a meeting hall or the likes of that. But we found shortly after that, as a Christmas gift-shop it was more of an attraction.”

Although the castle is perhaps best known for showboating during Expo 86, it was actually built— next to Pacific Centre Mall, at the corner of Georgia and Howe streets — for Vancouver centennial celebrations that same year, according to the City of Vancouver Archives.

The castle occupied prime downtown real estate in front of the Four Seasons Hotel, and once both parties ended, the brick building had to move.

Fantasy Garden World is long gone, but the castle can still be seen off No. 5 Road, awaiting its next chapter.

It’s now destined to become a child care centre at the entrance to a new No. 5 Road park as part of The Gardens development from Townline Homes.

Kids get crackin' with a book

T

he annual Summer Reading Club at Richmond Public Library has begun.

So far, more than 2,000 kids have signed up, but it’s not too late. The goal is to try and beat last year’s sign-up total of 3,783 young readers.

Children who sign up receive a reading record and bookmark and are eligible to win prizes throughout the summer.

With the possibility that a child’s academic skills can regress over the summer, the club is a great way to encourage them to keep their minds active, improve their vocabulary, comprehension skills, reading level and understanding of the world.

This year’s theme is “Book A Trip,” so consider choosing a book that will teach them about different countries, such as National Geographic’s Ultimate Adventure Atlas of Earth.

YVR forges link with Rome

Looking for a “Roman holiday” this summer? Getting there can be made more convenient for local travellers after Air Transat announced last month a new, seasonal service between YVR and Rome's Leonardo Da Vinci (Fiumicino) International Airport (FCO). The flights depart YVR weekly until Oct. 7 and are the first non-stop service from Vancouver to Italy. The new service will use an Airbus A330-200 with a capacity of 345 seats, including 12 in Club Class (business class). The new service is expected to add 60 jobs to the local economy.

Firm invests in Phoenix plant Richmond-based food manufacturer and distributor Premium Brands Holdings Corp has announced plans to open a new sandwich-making plant in Phoenix, Arizona. The company, which operates across Canada and a number of U.S. states, said it will invest approximately $29 million (U.S.) in the 212,000 square-foot facility. The funds will go toward modifying a newly-built plant in the southwestern U.S. city. Premium Brands said it will install six high-speed sandwich assembly lines at the site, leaving room for another 12 if needed.

The company already operates two sandwich production plants in the U.S., as well as two in Canada.

All the while, you have to fend off, with a pistol, animatronic zombies randomly breaking into the room. If they do, or you fail to keep the myriad of tasks completed, you lose a life.

Keep things ticking along and remain uninfected and your game can stretch up to around 20 minutes.

“It can be chaos,” Tang said, adding most players new to the game can get dispatched quite quickly. Thankfully, they can purchase subsequent game time for half the first-time cost of $12, and try their luck with the experience and knowledge they gained.

But as players progress through different levels, the challenges get tougher.

“We wanted to create a new type of experience for those who didn’t want to do puzzles or riddles like in the escape rooms. This is more like an action game,” Tang said, adding he sees this as just one step in his dream to develop an entertainment facility with an increasing emphasis on live action game play.

To that end, Exit will be rolling out a host of virtual reality-based games at its second Richmond location on Beckwith Road — a two-storey, 10,000-square-foot facility — by the end of this year.

“Customers will be wearing virtual reality goggles and play in a large theatre,” he said, adding while Exit purchased the licences for a host of virtual reality games, the long-term plan is to develop them in-house.

One of the virtual reality games will be a version of Flappy Birds, the challenging smart phone app-based game which has players navigate their way around a series of obstacles.

“To stay aloft people will have to actually wave their arms, just like a bird flapping their wings,” Tang said laughing.

or those parents who have trouble prying the video game controller out of the tightened grasp of their offspring in favour of a real world experience that will get them off the couch to interact with others, Richmond’s Justin Tang offers some hope.

Tang’s company, Exit Entertainment, has created what he is touting as the world’s first , interactive, arcade-style video game.

Exit is known mostly for being the first in North America for developing escape room games where players are locked inside a room and have to decipher numerous clues, sometimes in elaborately themed game settings and scenarios, to gain exit from the game and room.

Now, the company, which was launched with one location in 2013, is branching out to offer a game that combines elements of a video game with real life action.

“Essentially, we wanted to bring virtual entertainment into real life,” said Tang, 30 who, as the company’s CEO, guided Exit to a Richmond Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Award in 2014 for innovation of the year.

Today, there are 11 locations, two in Richmond that are considered corporate stores, and nine other franchises — seven in the Lower Mainland and two in Alberta.

“Video games offer a great experience.

However, while they seem to be connecting people by allowing you to play with people online, it also pulls people apart through decreasing social experiences with their friends and families,” Tang said.

Tang knows this firsthand. He was an avid gamer growing up in Rich-d mond where he graduated y. from Steveston secondary.

He would spend hours playing just about anythingg he could, especially role playing adventures. But hee recognized the problems of d too much screen time and followed his vision of a facility where video games were brought to real life.

Soccer 'nations' ready to battle

he 37th annual Nations Cup kicks off next weekend, with thousands of players and spectators expected to descend on the soccer fields at Hugh Boyd, Manoah Steves and Minoru Park.

A veritable feast of soccer is expected to fill the three-day schedule which kicks off Friday, July 15 at 6:30 p.m. with multiple games on tap at all three tournament venues.

Some of the best amateur soccer players in Western Canada will grace the grass and turf fields in Richmond, with men and women as young as teenagers in the Open section and as old as in their 60s in the over-52 section putting their skills on show.

Two more teams have been added to the over-52 Men’s section to bolster their number from six to eight. However, the focus will be on the Men’s Open section, where perennial favourites and title holders India will do battle with Africa, Portugal and Croatia in what looks, on paper, to be the toughest of the four round-robin groups.

Other powerhouse nations in the open section — Ireland and Germany — will also have to be at their best to win their sections, respectively facing Saudi Arabia, China and Iran and Scotland, Serbia and Italy.

“I get asked every year about this time and usually I get a sense

who might be strong from warm-up games. But this year I haven’t heard a peep, so I’m not that sure,” said Nations Cup president Jeff Wilson, when asked who he fancied to take the Men’s Open title this year.

“As ever, though, India, Ireland and Germany will likely be strong.”

In the same section, Serbia, added Wilson, had to re-qualify for the tournament, but managed to overcome Japan in the final qualifying game to get back in.

In the Women’s Open section, The Caribbean team pulled out late, so in stepped a new Wales team, which, said Wilson, put its name into the hat six months ago and not on the back of the men’s national team’s unprecedented glory run in Euro 2016.

As with most years, added Wilson, the Nations Cup has the potential to expand, with several teams on the waiting list in most age groups.

However, the lack of facilities continues to restrict the tournament’s growth. “There still is the opportunity to expand, but the impediment is the facilities, there isn’t enough fields,” said Wilson.

“We could add teams, but we just don’t have the space and we also run the risk of diluting the quality of the tournament.”

Friday’s beer garden opens from 6:30 p.m. and runs to 11 p.m., next to the West Richmond Community Centre.

Polansky lifts Richmond title

C

anadian Peter Polansky picked up his 15th career professional title with a huge win last week, as he upset the top seed in the $25,000 Richmond Country Club Futures final.

The 28-year-old Thornhill, Ont. native defeated Chinese Taipei’s Jason Jung 6-1, 6-4 in the championship match.

It was the third time that Jung and Polansky faced off on the pro circuit, and Polansky’s win upped their head-to-head record to 3-0 in the Canadian’s favour.

Polansky’s singles victory came on the heels of capturing the doubles title with fellow Canadian Philip Bester.

The pair had earlier unhinged Britain’s Farris Fathi Gosea and Tim Kopinski of the United States 7-6(2), 6-2.

However, Polansky won’t have too long to bask in the glory of his phenomenal results in Richmond.

He headed slightly east to compete in the $25,000 Kelowna Futures at Kelowna Parkinson Recreation Centre last weekend.

W

ith the final leg of my Olympic preparation underway in St. Moritz, France, I’ve been spending a lot of time reflecting on what this journey means to me and how I got here.

In my reflections, I’ve dug deep into the pillars of my personality and looked at how track has fulfilled those traits.

My two strongest traits have always been a fiery competitiveness and an abundance of energy. At a young age, these traits went uncontained, which spelled disaster. I did poorly in school and struggled to communicate effectively.

The latter of those two stems from being an introvert in denial. I loved hanging out with friends, but would become emotionally drained quite quickly and refusing to remove myself to recharge on my own, I stubbornly pushed on, usually culminating in some epic tantrum.

My perfect outlet first came unknowingly when I began running in Grade 4, thanks to Kingswood elementary’s lunchtime popsicle stick runs.

I fell in love with running, trying to push myself further every day, feeding that

competitive fire. But what I didn’t know at the time was that running was also allowing me to reset inside the solitude of my own head.

Through high school there was a shift and I became too focused on the external rewards — track no longer fulfilled the same parts of my personality.

Ironically, while I was no longer intrinsically driven by it, my extrinsic being had become so intertwined with “being an athlete” that I couldn’t possibly fathom quitting, despite not feeling fulfilled.

Luckily, the next big shift came shortly after high school, when I began studying kinesiology at UBC. Learning about human physiology, I developed a passion for getting the most out of myself.

While the actual training still didn’t drive me, I saw it as a prerequisite to being great and that was enough to get through it.

For a number of years, my needs were met by finding joy in the outcomes of the pursuit, not the pursuit itself. Or so I thought.

In my reflections, I came to realize that, unbeknownst to me, the training had been making me hap-

pier all along.

When I didn’t train, I couldn’t focus and actually revelled in those moments spent alone with my thoughts.

This year, for the first time since I was in elementary school, I became consciously aware that the training was making me happier and through my reflection, I now have a better understanding of why that is.

Knowing this, has also had the added effect of making me happier while training, which led to training better, which has led to being happier etc… until I’ve found myself in the best shape of my life.

With these revelations from my reflections, I find myself thinking less about my outcome goal for Rio and more about embracing and enjoying this journey that I’m on, appreciating what sport has done for me.

Don’t get me wrong, I still dream daily of standing on that podium, the culmination of a lifetime’s work and I know now, more than ever, that it’s possible.
