n our gridlocked part of the world, there’s not a lot that’s more precious, at least for a beleaguered commuter, than a strip of asphalt that crosses water.

Highways and arterial roads are nice, but they can only take you so far before the inevitable requirement to traverse a river, bay or inlet — those topographical elements that help give the region its charm but wreak havoc on the daily commute.

Given the scarcity and value of these water crossings, it makes sense to utilize them to the absolute maximum, a situation lacking at the Alex Fraser, the six-lane span that has evolved into the second busiest bridge in Greater Vancouver and where significant rush hour back-ups have become the norm.

In an overdue move, the province announced recently it will explore the idea of implementing a counterflow system at the bridge, which should bring some initial relief, although history has shown that as soon as additional capacity is provided, it’s quickly swallowed up by drivers seeking the path of least resistance.

The fact Victoria is looking at reconfiguring traffic flow on the Alex Fraser demonstrates the value of even a single lane across water, which leaves me scratching my head with the decision to replace the George Massey Tunnel with a 10-lane bridge.

I’m not opposed to a new bridge, but I do question the plan to mothball the tunnel because doing so offsets commuting gains that will be gained as a result of the estimated $3.5-billion crossing.

I know, I know, there are costly seismic issues in the tube’s future, to say nothing of the shipping industry’s desire to see it removed, but when lanes crossing the river are at such a premium, it seems foolish to forsake ones we already have.

The tunnel is at least 20 years younger than the Pattullo, Lions Gate and Burrard bridges, and slightly newer than the Granville Street and Oak Street bridges, so it’s hard to buy the notion it’s nearing the end of its lifespan.

It’s outdated, for sure, but with a new bridge built slightly upriver to link both Highway 99 and the South Fraser Perimeter Road with Knight Street, a retrofitted tunnel could still play a role well into the future.

It’s a shame its days are numbered because there’s absolutely no doubt watercrossing lanes are precious.

to withhold seismic upgrade funding, thus forcing schoolchildren to attend schools that will likely suffer structural failure in the event of an earthquake.

Richmond has two schools that are not (even) running at 30 per cent capacity.

Also, the Richmond board has covered the deficit from provincial cutbacks by using a $2 million surplus from a previous year. How is that a “responsible business” decision, and how is that sustainable? In addition, $335,000 was cut from Richmond’s school supplies and $200,000 from HVAC services.

I can tell you that PACs will need to fundraise for the missing school supplies, and air quality will suffer.

This is an unsustainable practice, and the people of Richmond need someone with the courage to say no.

As for Mr. Tablotney’s dissatisfaction with Carol Day and “her two cents,” I have a question. How are you, Mr. Tablotney, part of the solution? Ms. Day is thinking of alternatives for RSB assets, so they can be used for the benefit of Richmond’s communities.

Richmond is waiting for a champion for their communities, which are fundamentally supported by the vibrancy that young families provide. Remove a school, and you remove the future of that neighbourhood.

Will the Richmond trustees step up and demand better for the future of its smallest citizens?

Dear Editor, You don’t need to go to fancy brunches, dinners, etc. to celebrate Father`s Day. My dad will be 82 in November, so I thought I would go ‘old school’ this year.

First, I showed up at his place in Richmond with a fabulous balloon, which I assured him would last upwards of a few months — the gift that keeps giving! He immediately wanted to go outside. (Perhaps to let the sucker go, but I wouldn’t let him) Next, a trip to Garry Point Park where a nice Dollar Store kite flying was in order.

Who doesn’t like to fly a kite!

Expensive gift? Heck, no — macaroni art.

It was a shame that when he opened it, a part of the “D” came off and #1 Dad became #1 Cad. Oh well, it was the thought that counts. Best day ever.

The BC Liberal government, led

by Premier Christy Clark, seems dead set on dismantling our current public education system – a system which multiple generations have worked arduously and sacrificed significantly in order to build and adequately fund. In exchange for our current system, which views education as an individual right for every British Columbian and not a privilege for the elite, and as an invaluable social benefit rather than a pesky social burden, the BC Liberals seem intent on dismantling our current public education system in favour of a — privately funded — education system in our province. This has led many people, myself included, to ask the uncomfortable but relevant and timely question: are we headed towards the stratification of Canadian society between those that “have” and those that “have not” via a two-tiered education system?

Rink needs a repaint Dear Editor, The surface of the Coliseum Rink at Richmond Ice Centre looks like it hasn’t been repainted since the last millennium. Other rink surfaces at that facility are in almost as bad condition.

Richmond hosted a Provincial Ball Hockey Championship on it last year, and this year teams from other municipalities regularly play on it. It is an embarrassment. This summer, please can the City of Richmond either repaint the rinks or scrape off what’s left of the old paint. Thanks.

Currently, we have the second lowest per-student funding in the entire nation, only to be under spent by Prince Edward Island – a struggling maritime province without a tenth of the technology, infrastructure, resources, and development B.C. boasts. The chronic and deliberate underfunding of public education in B.C. is an embarrassment to our province, and a testimony to our provincial government’s abysmal opinion of public education. Simply put, it’s just not a BC Liberal priority.

And who sacrifices as a result of these cuts? Directly, our children, and, indirectly, the rest of us. A lack of adequate funding results in major changes, such as hiring fewer teachers and support staff, larger classroom sizes, using outdated materials and technologies, downloading administrative and infrastructure costs to boards of education, delays in seismic upgrading, and even closing schools. Moreover, vital programs aimed at helping our most vulnerable students are exacerbated.

Students with special needs suffer, arguably, the most because of the lack of support available to them. What type of society thinks it is acceptable to balance its budget off the backs of its most vulnerable – special needs children!

The BC Liberal government promised to reduce class-size and class-composition issues quite some time ago; however, students are still waiting for the support they desperately need.

Of course, these cuts have absolutely nothing to do with attempting to balance our provincial budget. This is just a red herring to redirect attention from the true neo-liberal corporate agenda, as there is money, seemingly, available for the priorities of the BC Liberal government, which includes providing huge tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires. This is not about a lack of money; rather it is about a government with highly convoluted and downright callous priorities. Education falls way down at the bottom of our government’s “priority list,” and well after lining the pockets of the wealthy and corporate elite. It is time that we stood up for the voiceless (our children) and demand that our public schools receive stable, predictable, and adequate funding.

Our public education system needs our support for it acts as the “gatekeepers of possibility” for our students, and the “guardians of hope” for an egalitarian, pluralistic, democratic society. We must halt our government’s nefarious attempts to set us back a hundred years and privatize our public education system. Education is not a “business’” it is a “public trust” for the benefit of every citizen. It is up to each and every one of us to get out and vote for progressive voices that truly embody the notion that all people, not just wealthy British Columbians, are entitled to a first-rate, high-quality education.

Commission finds 'missionary' committed fraud at charity Alan Campbell

hey say they haven’t a hope of ever seeing their money again — but the victims of a fraud want everyone to know what happened.

Roysen Chen said his elderly father, Bailin Chen, 76, is out of pocket to the tune of $40,000 after being conned – according to the British Columbia Securities Commission (BCSC) – by Richmond self-proclaimed missionary and charity leader Alan Lau. Chen said his dad had been volunteering near the end of 2013 at the Richmond-based non-profit Canadian Low Income Seniors Affordable Housing Society (which Lau founded) when he accepted a ride from Lau en route to depositing $50,000 in his bank account.

However, according to the findings of a BCSC hearing released this week, Lau, 90, convinced Bailin, who doesn’t speak English, to, instead, “invest” the money — which was given to him by his daughter in China for living expenses — in his society.

In the six months or so that followed, Bailin’s son grew suspicious of the deal and he and his father started to ask questions of Lau, a former Hong Kong businessman who apparently made millions in overseas investments.

Lau apparently handed back $10,000 in May 2014, but a couple of months later, when it became clear his father wasn’t going to get the rest of his money back, Roysen reported the matter to the BCSC, an inde-

pendent, provincial government agency responsible for regulating capital markets and investments.

And this week, after investigating the complaint, the BCSC ruled that Lau had committed a “deceit” and had deposited the funds into his own bank account and used them to pay his existing debt.

“It took a few months for us to fully find out what happened and that’s when we started asking questions; I kept telling my father something was wrong about this,” said Roysen, whose parents live with him at his west Richmond home.

“Originally, my father was told it would be used for groceries; but Lau had no intention of giving the money back, as far as we can tell. Lau threw my father out of the society because he kept asking for the money and, quite rightly, kept telling everyone in (the society) about the money.

“When it became clear he wasn’t going to pay the money back, we went straight to the BCSC.” When the allegation first came to light last summer, Lau told the Richmond News that certain people were out to discredit him and ruin his reputation as a community-minded and charitable “missionary.”

And on Thursday, when contacted again by the News, Lau accused Chen senior and his family of being jealous, having an agenda and he even pointed the finger at the BCSC, which has, according to Lau, stitched him up for “political reasons,” which he couldn’t go

into at the time. He further claimed that he has offered to pay back the missing $40,000 to Chen, but he and his family, said Lau, have refused the offer and “would rather seek to ruin his reputation” than take back the money.

As for going out of their way to discredit Lau, Roysen said he’s only met Lau a couple of times and his father had only been volunteering at the Cook Road society for a few months before the deal took place.

“We barely even know him; so how could we be jealous? We just want our money back,” Roysen added.

According to the BCSC findings, when Bailin and Lau (also known as Tin Chao Alan Lau) went to the bank back in 2013, the teller completed the documents authorizing the transfer of the $50,000.

The documentation was in English, a language Bailin could not speak or read, the BCSC said.

“The documents directed payment of the funds to (Lau) personally. The investor could not understand the documents as they were in English and he believed the funds were being deposited to the society,” according to BCSC filings.

On the same day, Lau deposited the $50,000 into his personal bank account, the BCSC alleged, and over the next three weeks spent the entirety of the money on payments to personal credit cards, cash withdrawals, and other expenses.

were paid by him personally and tha that his personal debt included society expenses,” but he “did not provide any evidence to corroborate this.”

Roysen said his family doesn’t see the point in hiring a lawyer to get the $40,000 back, as they don’t believe Lau has any funds or assets worth pursuing.

Lau, however, told the News that he has the money and is still willing to pay up, provided the family admit to apparent “wrongdoings.”

He also said he will fight the BCSC findings, even if “it takes years and years.”

Any appeal would need to wait until after a sanctions decision is made on the matter, and Lau will have until July 27 to make submissions to the BCSC about possible sanctions.

In 2014, Lau was celebrated by the Canadian Race Relations Foundation with the “Community Champion Special Award.”

In the summer of 2015, Lau, also launched the “Richmond Community Publication Society,” a monthly auction of Chinese collectibles to apparently pour millions of dollars into local charities. The lavish launch at a Buswell Street office was attended by Mayor Malcolm Brodie and Coun. Bill McNulty.

It’s unclear from that society’s Chinese language website if the organization is still up and running.

small but growing group of community activists, concerned about the loss of Richmond’s mature neighbourhood trees, has taken its efforts and concerns from the online realm to Richmond City Hall.

At city council’s planning committee meeting Tuesday, long-term residents Steve Guthrie and Cindy Lee laid out their plan to reform the City of Richmond’s tree protection bylaws, claiming the existing ones are ineffective in light of record levels of residential redevelopment.

At issue is how an older home is demolished, along with its trees (usually 40-60 years-old), and a new home with large driveways, a three-car garage and maximum square-footage, toward the back, is built.

Home structures tend to trump tree protection under the city’s bylaws, although mitigation efforts (such as realigning a home’s footprint) are taken when possible, according to city staff.

Guthrie used two images — one of a 1970s Westwind neighbourhood, with mature trees, and the other of a 1990s Broadmoor subdivision, with no street trees — to exemplify what the city should be aiming for and what it should be avoiding.

More detailed concerns include the construction of brick or concrete walls and gates on properties. These structures, along with garages and driveways, suffocate otherwise protected, healthy tree roots.

Furthermore, the group is concerned big trees are being replaced by smaller ones.

In one example, using Google Street View, the pair showed councillors how two big evergreen trees were taken down and replaced by ornamental maple trees.

Richmond’s Deputy CAO Joe Erceg told councillors and the delegation that the city replanted 990 new trees in the city in 2015.

But at issue is where trees are being replanted (bunched into parks, meaning tree canopies are degraded in neighbourhoods).

“In some cases the location of trees conflicts with a new building,” said Erceg, adding in other cases replacement trees may

be smaller because survival rates are better.

Erceg said “there’s a lot of work being done and there’s probably more that can be done.”

Guthrie called the response a “classic PR response.”

The city is legislated to increase its flood protection levels. Thus, during redevelopment, land must be raised, suffocating roots in the process.

Lee is calling on council to increase the staffing levels of the tree protection department. Presently, there are only three members to “police” the city. Notably, 2016 is on pace for a record number of home demolitions, with 232 to May 31.

The pair noted the benefits of trees, such as filtering pollutants, absorbing storm water runoff and sequestering carbon emissions.

The city is presently reviewing yard setbacks and green space coverage of residential lots.

Coun. Bill McNulty asked for a review of the bylaws and referred the presentation to staff.

ow that it’s officially summer and B.C. schools are heading into summer break, drivers should expect even more children playing outside.

On average, 108 child pedestrians (aged five to 15) are injured in crashes each year in the Lower Mainland. Despite this, road safety is not always top of mind for kids, so it’s important to pay extra attention when you’re driving, especially around playgrounds and residential areas, notes ICBC, which sent out a news release this week as a reminder to the public.The car insurance provider said it’s important for parents to go over road rules with their children, now that they’re to be set free.

n Tips for parents:

Slow down: With more children playing outside in the summer, be cautious and watch your speed, especially near playgrounds, parks and in residential areas. Playground speed limits remain in effect year-round.

Watch for clues: In residential areas, a hockey net or ball can mean that kids are playing nearby.

Watch for cyclists: Actively watch for cyclists on the road who might be harder to see.

Make eye contact whenever possible.

Yield to cyclists on paths. Look right when turning right. Shoulder check on cycling greenways, such as on Railway Avenue, where cyclists have a right-of-way.

Set a good example: Never jaywalk or run across the street. Where possible, cross at intersections with a pedestrian crossing light or marked crossing.

When sharing a path with pedestrians, such as the Railway Greenway or Shell Road Trail, ride on the right hand side. Use a bell or horn to alert others when you plan to pass. When turning, shoulder check well in advance, hand signal and shoulder check again before turning. Always obey the intersection lights and signals and look for turning cars.

Student hones in on heritage

A

local high school student is in the running for a national award for a history project on Canadian heritage.

Grade 9 student Vedanshi Vala is one of a select few students across Canada to be in the running for a Canadian Heritage award for its Young Citizens Heritage Fair contest.

And she needs your help to win.

Vedanshi created a video on the late Dr. Wilder Penfield, a Canadian medical pioneer.

“He contributed greatly towards Canada, placing on the world stage in the field of medicine and science. Several of his notable advances include the invention of electrical stimulation of the brain (ESB), as well as mapping of many regions of the human brain,” said Vendashi, noting ESB has given “the gift of life” to many Canadians as it’s a method of neurosurgery used on patients today.

“The most interesting fact that I learned about my topic is that Dr. Wilder Penfield’s sister suffered from epilepsy, and his inability to cure her, even though he was a medical professional, motivated him greatly,” said Vedanshi.

Through studying Penfield’s accomplishments, Vedanshi said she’s learned what it takes to be disciplined and dedicated to a goal.

“Even though Dr. Penfield faced many hurdles in his path to success, he did not allow them to drag him down. Instead, he worked even harder, and with even more diligence,” said Vedanshi.

The young French student is asking Richmondites to log in to YoungCitizens.ca and search her name in the catalogue, in order to watch and vote for her video, in which she takes on the role of Penfield by wearing a white lab coat.

Vedanshi got her start at the Richmond Heritage Festival two years ago, when she documented the history of rapid transit in Metro Vancouver. There, she was twice awarded the Stellar Achievement Award for Outstanding Project.

Now, she volunteers as an alumnus at the regional heritage fair council, and is also representing her region at the provincial level.

Voting concludes July 11. The top six winners, out of 150 regional winners, will win a trip to Ottawa to attend the Governor General’s History Awards.

Expect a generous nose of peach, pear, grapefruit, and pineapple. Then savour the dry flavour of juicy nectarine, peach, and baked pear with plenty of lip-smacking acidity to entice your palate. Their tasting notes recommend a Thai-style Dungeness crap and pomelo salad.

Also delicious is their Chardonnay ($25). I tried the 2013 vintage about a month ago but the winery will probably be serving the 2014 vintage. The 2013 was stellar.

The nose and palate was complex with fresh lemon, banana, pineapple, and nectarine, along with hints of cloves and nuts from the subtle oak aging. Crab cakes or garlic sautéed prawns would pair beautifully with this classic Burrowing Owl Chard.

Switching to a red, here in BC Merlot is the most widely planted red grape and at Burrowing Owl their 2012 Merlot ($30) is delicious. Inhale fragrances of blackberry, plum, orange peel, vanilla and cocoa. And the smooth rich flavour has plenty more dark fruit, mocha, and toast.

The winery’s tasting notes recommend serving this classic red with lamb shanks or eggplant parmigiana.

Last but not least, the 2013 Burrowing Owl Cabernet Franc ($35) is a gentler more seductive cousin to Cabernet Sauvignon. B.C. Cab Francs are usually better-balanced than their more famous relative because they can easily ripen in our climate. They have good body but they are not as firm or tannic as Cab Sauvs. I liked its medley of red currant, blueberry and blackberry fruit with notes of tobacco and of sagebrush, which grows next to the vineyards.

Like most B.C. wineries, Burrowing Owl charges $3 for a four wine sample. Since 2004, all the tasting money goes to the Burrowing Owl Conservation Society of B.C. and its project of rehabilitating the endangered species.

Almost $900,000 has been raised for this worthy project which rears the little owls in captivity and reintroduces them into the wild in the Okanagan Valley. Enjoy a white or a red, and do a green good-deed at the same time!

ver a quarter century ago, Robert Fulghum shared his wisdom in the bestseller, “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.” He reminded us that we could live good and happy lives by simply following the rules of kindergarten, including: “Share everything. Play fair. Don’t hit people. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Flush.”

But I can’t say that everything I needed to know to help my patients become healthier and achieve their potentials I learned in medical school. Don’t get me wrong; we learned a lot in medical school. We spent countless hours in the anatomy lab studying the details of the human body from the inside out and many, many more hours in lectures and libraries understanding physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology and ethics. We were taught by professors and clinicians in every field of medicine. In hospitals and clinics, we learned to apply medicine to the individual.

After I started practice, I learned even more from my patients, refining the art of medicine.

Sharing in the stories of my patients’ lives, I was privy to the wisdom of the ages.

Early in my career, I knew that in order to guide my patients to achieve their potential for health, I had to continually grow and learn myself. In addition to the lifelong, continuing medical education to which all physicians commit, with a handful of colleagues, I studied outside of the box.

What I learned and have subsequently

shared with many of my patients were the secrets to that elusive goal we all seek: happiness. These are the skills essential to Emotional Wellness.

They should not be secrets. They should be part of the core curriculum for every human being, the course every parent should take or the user manuals for the human brain and spirit.

They will eventually become mainstream practices and part of everyday self-care – they are a part of mine and those of more of my patients. In fact, children are being introduced to mindfulness in some elementary schools.

So what are the essential skills of emotional wellness? Here’s two: 1. Mindfulness. This is more than just meditation, although that’s how it’s first taught: sitting in a quiet room, attending to the breath, the sounds and sensations of the moment. This can calm the body, quiet the mind, reduce anxiety and relieve stress.

With practice, we gain awareness and insight into this life, and the attitudes of mindfulness – including unconditional acceptance, nonjudging, nonidentification, equanimity and compassion spill over into all of your daily activities.

2. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

When we are able to recognize our moods and thoughts without struggling, clinging or identifying with them, we can see how our moods shade our throughts and how our recurrent thoughts can perpetuate negative moods.

ow, to be certain, Richmond isn’t exactly your Mecca for patios. Normally, when you think patios, you think Vancouver — and fair enough, why not?

But Richmond has a good selection of riverside patios and it also has a decent selection of urban patios. As the city grows, more choices are sprouting up.

This list is just that — a list. In it, most of my focus is on the patio itself and having a cold brewski, so access to good drinks, sun, people-watching and views are of primary concern. I am partial to a good view of the Fraser River and optimal sun trajectories, mind you. However, factors such as atmosphere and food can tip the scales in either direction (but this isn’t a restaurant review). At any rate, I’ll leave it up to you to rank them accordingly.

This is the first weekend of summer, so get outside and enjoy the crowds!

nown simply to locals as “The Beaver,” the Flying Beaver takes its name from the DHC-2 Beaver single-engine floatplane. This classic bush plane reflects the working-class vibe that still exists at the pub.

Its menu is fairly standard and the beverage selections are solid, with a growing craft beer menu. With excellent service, the Beaver’s unique perch atop the Fraser River and front row seat to float plane landings makes it the most renowned patio in Richmond. I can’t argue with it being the No. 1-ranked restaurant in Richmond by Tripadvisor.

Live bands on the weekend are a bonus.

id you know that the casino has an amazing heated patio, with comfy outdoor couches, overlooking the Fraser River? I didn’t know for the longest time and indeed it advertises itself as “Richmond’s best kept secret.” Not anymore! The patio is seasonal but we aren’t interested in winter ales in the rain anyway. I’ve been here twice and love watching the boats go by. The food is delicious and it’s a perfect stop on a bike ride or while traveling into and out of Vancouver on the Canada Line.

ow, I’ve cheated and combined these two mainstay Steveston locations into one. The reason? Well, if one is busy, I’ll just go to the other. Furthermore, where the sun is could be a prime indicator of what patio I’d likely sit at (late morning, early afternoon go to Sockeye; late afternoon to the evening, go to Shady). Each place has similar drink options and your standard slate of fish and chips (I refuse to get into that argument . . . right now). The main thing to remember is that with either choice, you’re right at the Steveston Wharf to watch the madness shake down.

hat a great concept: Having a beer in the sun and watching boats putter down the river and airplanes land at YVR. Milltown actually has two patios, one sunny and the other slightly shaded. The place has excellent service and a friendly neighbourhood vibe, despite its marina location. Milltown also goes above and beyond its pub fare and keeps prices reasonable. The pub also brings in live music by local bands and musical groups. Milltown is effectively in Vancouver, on Richmond Island, but it’s licensed by the City of Richmond.

egends took over from Malone’s a couple years ago after moving from Buswell Street when it became “condo refugees.” Instead of having a shaded, dapper-looking patio next to a bizarre adult entertainment store Legends now boasts a large, sunny patio at the corner of Garden City and Blundell roads. The old patio is covered for colder days while the new concrete patio has a few planter-box palm trees and plastic patio tables and chairs — which suits this Richmond institution just fine, thank you very much. Good for people watching, Legends offers a solid selection of craft beers.

Kove also has a small upstairs patio, offering stunning views of Delta’s wildlife reserve. It’s a bit small but no doubt unique if you can snag a table.

Catering to a more adult-oriented clientele, Kove has a list of interesting Belgian beers, priced around $10 each.

They’re worth the treat, overlooking the river.

In 2015, race walker Evan Dunfee won gold at the Pan-American Games in Toronto. Looking ahead to the 2016 Rio Olympics, he will try and build on his success, fighting for a spot on the podium.

Last races before Rio T

he last couple of weeks have been a whirlwind.

After a few hard weeks of training and competing, I’m taking things a bit easier and letting all that hard work consolidate.

I don’t get to race locally often, but since my last post, I’ve been lucky enough to race twice.

A couple weeks back I decided to enter a 10km race on the track in Coquitlam.

The plan was a long session in the morning and to back it up with a hard effort in the afternoon. The day could not have gone better.

In the morning I got through my fastest ever 40km in training, 3:05 (or about a 3:15 marathon) with my coach and teammate on the bike keeping me company and giving me my drinks and gels.

After scarfing down a recover milkshake, a couple PB and honey sandwiches and a few hours of rest, I was off to Coquitlam for what I simply hoped would be a hard effort.

After my warm-up I felt surprisingly springy and when the race started, I went off at a pace I figured was way too quick.

I thought to myself, ‘O well, let’s just see how long I can hold this’ and lap after lap my pace stayed the same. In the end, I walked 39:21 and broke the Canadian record set in 1990 by an Olympic silver medalist.

While I was surprised and happy for this given the circumstances, more than anything, I was confident that I was heading in the right direction.

By far the best part of the day though was seeing so many of the kids who had competed earlier sticking around to watch the race and cheer me on, which was a huge motivation for me late in the race.

Then, after my race, to see all the younger race walkers racing to personal bests over 800 and 1500m was awesome.

The next weekend was the Harry Jerome International meet, out at Swangard and we were lucky enough to have a 5km put in for us.

While I hate 5km (way too short), we were going after the Canadian record of 18:45.

caught up with me and I was only able to muster 19:30, but came away with the win, which was more important on the day.

As my last race before Rio, it was nice to be able to do it in front of family and friends (and a record crowd of 6,000 people).

My favourite part of the night, though, was getting mobbed by a pack of kids looking for autographs and who all wanted to how to race walk. It was great to see the impact of sport working in real-time.

When the monotony of heavy training can sometimes get you down, these races have been the perfect thing to remind me what I love about sport and reenergize me as the countdown clock dips below 50 days.

Next week, I leave for St. Moritz for a month at altitude training with some of the world’s best in my last big block before heading into Brazil at the beginning of August.

It’s all becoming very very real now, and I couldn’t be more excited.

ew of us could turn down the offer of a good night’s sleep with the relaxation and regeneration it can provide.

But for some new parents, a good stretch of unbroken sleep for themselves, and their offspring, can be a fleeting thing.

Parents can be up for great lengths of time trying, sometimes desperately, to get their little ones to nod off fully, and for long enough, to get some much-needed shut eye for themselves.

While there’s no real wave of a magic wand to how that can be achieved for all families, a new sleep consultant service for young children has begun offering some guidance.

Called WeeSleep (weesleep.ca), it worked so well for former Steveston resident Kristen Jooste that she signed on to become one of three consultants offering advice to families across the Lower Mainland.

“As a new parent I ended up doing whatever it took to get my son to sleep,” said Jooste, who would often be up all hours with her son, Charlie, attempting to put him down to bed.

“He didn’t want to sleep on his back. He would sleep on me, which was fine. But every time I would get up to try and put him in his crib, he’d wake up and wouldn’t sleep.”

After suffering many long, sleep-deprived nights, a friend of Jooste’s suggested a sleep consultant.

“I’d never even heard of it,” Jooste said. “So, I decided what the heck, it couldn’t hurt. I didn’t know what they would do.

“He (Charlie) wasn’t a bad sleeper, he just wasn’t sleeping in his crib. He was sleeping with my husband and I in our bed.”

What happened was a consult of about an hour and half with a WeeSleep representative to find out what Charlie’s sleep schedule was and a plan was devised from that.

Sounds simple? It involved getting Charlie on a new routine that was introduced over a period of 10 days.

“That was just to guide him to get himself to sleep in his own crib,” Jooste said.

It was a success.

night.” One of the keys to getting a sleep plan to work involves just that — a plan.

WeeSleep consultants start by asking the right questions, Jooste said, explaining that usually begins with finding out how the client’s baby falls asleep.

“A lot of the time it’s during breastfeeding, rocking or walking — that’s the crutch which is getting them to sleep,” she said. “The whole point is getting your baby to go to sleep on their own.

“It’s a matter of giving them (parents) the tools which will give them the confidence to be able to put their baby to sleep and not give in. So, when the baby wakes up in the middle of the night, they are able to put themselves back to sleep instead of waking up mom and dad.

“They don’t need that soother. They don’t need mommy.

They don’t need anything.”

Charlie is now three and he’s become a good, consistent sleeper. Much of that is attributed to adhering to the plan.

“Kids, they love consistency,” Jooste said. “For Charlie, he needs to know that bath time is coming up and then after bath time it’s bed time. He knows the routine. He knows what’s coming.”

But that can present challenges for some families who want to continue with a normal social life with friends and family.

But when the benefits of a well rested child, and parents, is the result, scheduling activities that don’t interrupt the sleep plan are easy to make, Jooste said.

“People used to make fun of my husband and I because when we got invited out for dinner we had to tell people that we needed to leave at 6:30 p.m. to start Charlie’s bath time and get him into bed by 7:15 p.m.,” Jooste said.

“At first, friends didn’t get it. Now, they do. Or they just come over to our house, instead, so they can visit a little longer.”

Good sleep periods for parents, and children, are essential to maintaining a healthy life, according to various studies and baby sleep experts.

For adults, it can include depression, anxiety, stress, aggression, an impaired immune system and even a loss of libido.

For children, the impact of chronic tiredness can vary with their age.

Babies in their first year can experience tearfulness for no obvious reason which can often be mislabelled as wind, colic, reflux, silent reflux, teething or abdominal pain.

It can also result in decreased weight gain due to poor or incomplete feeds.

In other cases, it can manifest itself in decreased rates of learning, delayed speech and walking, as well as emotional fragility.

While that can sound pretty serious, each case can differ greatly, just as successful sleep plans do.

Jooste works with children aged from four months.

“Thirteen pounds, 13 weeks. That’s the rule. After that, a baby can sleep through the night,” she said. “Generally, anything younger than that it’s hard to get them into a full night’s sleep.”

Between six months and a year is the most common age for clients.

But in today’s fast-paced world, is there enough need for a sleep consultant?

“There is,” Jooste said. “It’s one of those things that people don’t know about until they are in the situation.

“When you start talking about it, there’s always someone who knows someone else who is going through this.”

he City of Richmond is updating its Affordable Housing Strategy and encourages the community to share their experience with housing affordability in Richmond. The public is welcome to participate in the open house on Tuesday, June 28 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Richmond Cultural Centre, Performance Hall located at 7700 Minoru Gate. Attendees will have an opportunity to meet city staff, learn about the Affordable Housing Strategy and provide input.

Residents can also visit LetsTalkRichmond. ca for project-related information and to complete the online survey. The survey will be open until Sunday, July 3, 2016. Printed copies of the survey will be available at the June

28 open house.

To-date, city staff have connected with over 400 community members at seven pop-up events, and over 250 people have completed the online survey to discuss housing affordability challenges in Richmond.

Housing affordability remains a critical issue, regionally and locally. A diverse range of affordable housing choices for households and families of different ages, types and incomes is an essential part of a liveable community, noted the city in a news release.

The city adopted its current Affordable Housing Strategy in 2007. The city’s rental vacancy rate is presently 0.3 per cent, according to Coun. Bill McNulty.

Goalie ready for lacrosse’s world stage Mark Booth

Brock Jung is getting an early jump on his field lacrosse season and it only happens to be on the sport’s biggest stage.

The 16-year-old McMath Secondary student will be suiting up in goal for Team China at the upcoming FIL U19 World Field Lacrosse Championships — July 7-16 in Coquitlam.

Jung wasn’t even aware of the possibility until his dad Mike received a phone call back in January at the family’s Ironwood sporting goods store — Ice Level Source for Sports.

“I was actually working at the time and my dad was on the phone talking to this guy for a while,” recalled Brock. “When he told me (China) wanted me to play for them, I was ecstatic. Not only was I surprised to get the call, I had no idea the Worlds were even being held here. I’m so excited.”

Chung can play for China since the Federation of International Lacrossse (FIL) considers it developing nation in the sport and is more flexible with its player eligibility.

Each team can have up to four non-passport players who parents or grandparents were born in that country.

He is aware of two other nonpassport players on the roster — one from Delta and the other from Nanaimo. He won’t know the rest of the team until it arrives in Vancouver in preparation for the

championships. Twice-a-day training sessions will be held at SFU. Chung is currently winding down his box lacrosse season with the Richmond Intermediate “A” Roadrunners where he suits up as a runner. It was about five years ago he decided to try playing goal in the field version of the sport and he hasn’t looked back since. He was recruited for Team China based on his play for Richmond at last season’s provincial championships.

Field lacrosse goalies wear little in the way of equipment, especially compared to their box counterparts, despite the ball being fired at high speeds.

“You can’t be afraid of the ball, that’s for sure,” laughed Jung. “I could pass and catch the ball as an out player but I didn’t really standout. I wanted to be a bigger part of my team and being a goalie was the best way to do that.”

Jung also plays hockey for Seafair Minor but says lacrosse has now surpassed the winter pastime as his favourite sport. Not only does he play both versions of the game, he is also an official with Richmond Lacrosse and was busy working several games at last week’s annual RMLA Novice Salmon Fest Tournament.

“It used to be all about hockey but it’s more just for exercise now,” he continued. “I had to make a greater commitment to one over the other and felt there were better opportunities in lacrosse for me.”

“I know we are not (at those

teams) level but it would be great to have a chance to play one of them,” smiled Jung.

Regardless, it’s going to be a summer he won’t soon forget.

This year’s camp is being offered and sponsored by Richmond FC and Soccer Links — specialists in sports products and strokes renovations.

Quinn promises participants an atmosphere of fun and sportsmanship.

The camp will be divided into four age groups for the following dates:

Ages 4-6 — July 4-8, July 11-14, July 18-22, Aug. 8-12, Aug. 22-26.

Ages 8-10 — July 25-29, Aug. 15-19.

Diego San Pedro concluded his high school golf career in grand style capturing the provincial “AAA” championship at the Ledgeview Golf Course in Abbotsford. The Grade 12 Steveston-London Secondary School student celebrated his 18th birthday with a sizzling opening round 7-under 63, that included six birdies over a nine hole stretch. He closed out the championships with a 67 to win by four strokes. He will be continuing his career at Oregon State University this fall. Coming on the heels of being named the Richmond News Sportsperson of the Year at last month’s 17th annual Richmond Sports Awards, Batara is the recipient of Special Olympics B.C.’s 2016 Athletic Achievement Award.

The 23-year-old dazzled in the pool at last summer’s Special Olmpics World Games in Los Angeles, winning four goal medals.

He touched the wall first in the 100 and 200 metre breaststroke, as well as to 100 butterfly. He added a fourth gold as a member of Canada’s 4x100 medley relay team.

Something fishy in air means party time CHRISTOPHERSUN Contributor

hen the smell of baked salmon and chow mein hits the air in Steveston, locals know it’s time to celebrate Canada’s biggest little party.

The 71st annual Steveston Salmon Festival is on July 1 and will attract more than 70,000 people to the Steveston Community Centre to take in the parade, entertainment, attractions

and, of course, the food.

The pancake breakfast kicks off the festival at 6:30 a.m. and, for lunch, the popular salmon bake and chow mein will be served.

Both items sell out fast every year, which is why this year’s salmon bake sponsor, Canada

Fishing Company, has made a slight and welcomed change.

“In the past, we served 2,000, 2,500 pieces but we’ve decided to ramp it up to 3,000,” said Canfisco president Dan Nomura. “It sells out every time and it’s going towards a good cause.”

Proceeds from the food sales will go towards replacing the ageing Steveston playground, explained Janice Froese, salmon festival executive director. She expects this year will be another exciting festival, with high calibre entertainment for kids and adults.

“There will be plenty to see,” Froese said. “We have the parade starting at 10 a.m., there is the swearing in ceremony, Japanese cultural show, martial arts, a car show, trade show, a youth area and lots of entertainment.”

Folk singer Shari Ulrich and her daughter Julia Graff are headlining the main stage and and for the first time, long-time Richmond resident Charlotte Diamond will entertain on the children’s stage.

While Froese is still busy finalizing this year’s festival, she will barely have a break before she starts on the next one.

“Next year is Canada’s 150th birthday,” Froese said. “I’m already thinking about next year’s festival.”

F

olk-pop singer and songwriter Shari Ulrich has been making music for more than four decades, but this may be her most ambitious year yet. She is releasing three albums in one year.

The Bowen Island-based artist currently performs in two groups. BTU, a folk trio, made up of Barney Bentall, Tom Taylor and Ulrich. They released their second album, Tightrope Walk, in February.

Ulrich is a multi-instrumentalist, playing violin, mandolin, guitar, piano and the dulcimer. Her daughter Julia Graff is also in the music business. Graff, whose father is musician David Graff, started studying violin and piano at age four, and at age 12, started joining her mother on stage. Now, she is a Vancouver-based, freelance audio engineer.

“On my last solo album, my daughter engineered and produced and she will be doing it again on my next album,” Ulrich said. “On the album released in February with Barney Bentall and Tom Taylor, she co-engineered it.”

The mother and daughter musical team will perform together at the 71st annual Steveston Salmon Festival on July 1, hitting the main stage at 1 p.m. With a song catalogue stretching more than 40 years, Ulrich will play a mix of old, new and maybe some unreleased, new music.

Ulrich laughed. “I mix it up.

“I’ll probably be doing a couple of ballads and a couple of more upbeat stuff.”

She is also part of The High Bar Gang, which is made up of six other musicians: Dave Barber, Kirby Barber, Rob Becker, Barney Bentall, Wendy Bird and Colin Nairne. They will release their second album in July.

Then, later this year, Ulrich will release her eighth solo album, which she is currently working on.

“I have never been busier than I am now and I am very lucky for that,” Ulrich said. “I love what I do.”

Ulrich is known as a Canadian musician and songwriter, but she was born in California. She moved to Canada shortly after the Kent State shooting in 1970, when 28 National Guards opened fire on anti-war student protesters at the Ohio University.

Feeling unsafe in her home country, she moved to Vancouver. In 1973, she formed the Pied Pumkin String Ensemble with two other musicians. She then joined Valdy and The Hometown Band a couple of years later and in 1982, she won her first Juno Award for Most Promising Female Vocalist. She is also associated with folk music group UHF, made up of Chilliwack lead singer Bill Henderson and Roy Forbes.

“There is lots of variety in what I do, which keeps it so interesting and engaging,” Ulrich said about being a musician. “That’s how I am able to release three albums in one year.”

Ulrich will also be reuniting with Valdy and The Hometown Band for its 40th anniversary, with a number of summer performances.

Looking at her touring schedule on her website, ShariUlrich.com, one would wonder how she finds the time to write new music. Besides performing for the many bands she’s associated with, as well as her own solo concerts, she also has shows scheduled with Séan McCann of Great Big Sea and Jim Byrnes.

“I don’t find it tiring at all,” Ulrich said. “I enjoy it all so much, so it doesn’t take a toll on me.”

SALMONFestival It’s been a decades-long wait for Diamond at Fest Christopher Sun

harlotte Diamond has lived in Richmond for 44 years, but in her 30 years as a renowned, children’s entertainer, she has never performed at “Canada’s biggest little birthday party.”

That’s about to change.

Classics such as Four Hugs a Day, Octopus (Slippery Fish), and I am a Pizza, along with newer music such as Ottie the Otter, will finally be heard at the Steveston Salmon Festival as Diamond will take the children’s festival stage on July 1, at 1 p.m.

Diamond has been asked to perform at the festival in the past, but she declined each time, until now.

“I was always booked somewhere else,” Diamond explained. “I have been very lucky in my career with getting repeat bookings, but unfortunately that meant I couldn’t perform at the Steveston Salmon Festival.

“It’s really nice this year to finally perform close to home.”

Last year, she co-released her latest album of new songs, Diamonds by the Sea, with her son, Matt.

“There’s lots of dancing on this album,” Diamond said. “I will be inviting kids to dance on the stage [at the festival], during the show. It will be very interactive.”

Diamond has an affinity to Steveston, as her husband was a commercial fisherman until he sold his boat in 1991, to become

her full-time manager when her career took off.

“We were a salmon fishing family,” Diamond said. “It’s in our roots.

“I feel very connected to this community, always have been.”

Diamond always had an interest in music

and sang in local folk groups and performed intro sets for Pete Seeger and Tom Paxton. Her career in children’s entertainment started when she developed a music program for the Gingerbread House Parent Participation Preschool, where her kids were enrolled. Four Hugs a Day, Each of us

is a Flower and Slippery Fish, were penned while she was involved with that program.

She performed her music at the preschool, which led to requests to perform at other preschools, elementary schools and then at bigger venues such as the Vancouver International Children’s Festival. In 1985, she released her first album, 10 Carrot Diamond, winning a 1986 Juno Award for her debut. As her popularity soared, she left her teaching career to focus on children’s entertainment. She had taught science, French and music at New Westminster Secondary school for 10 years.

“The writing just flowed out of me,” Diamond said. “I never got tired of it. There was always something to write about.”

She has since released 14 recordings, a couple of videos and a children’s board book, titled Slippery Fish in Hawai’i. She sings in French and Spanish, and has picked up a little bit of Chinese, Italian and Russian, which she incorporates into her music.

Diamond, 70, is slowly cutting back on her performances after three decades of performing. She has two grandkids now, age six and nine and she wants to spend more time with them, than on the road.

“When I talk about slowing down, it doesn’t mean my company is going to disappear,” Diamond said. “I have a very active website, where I release a few newsletters a year. I’ll just be performing at a gentle pace.”

or a select group of people in Richmond, July 1 marks not only Canada’s birthday and the annual Steveston Salmon Festival, it will be the first day they can finally call themselves, Canadian citizens.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada will conduct a swearing-in ceremony for 30 randomly chosen people on the salmon festival’s main stage, at 8:30 a.m. This is the second year that a citizenship ceremony will take place at the festival, open to the public.

“Citizenship ceremonies are the end of a long process of immigration, settlement and integration for a newcomer to Canada,” said CIC spokesperson Lindsay Wemp, in an email. “Ceremonies, like the one on July 1 at the Steveston Salmon Festival, are a moving and emotional celebration as well as a necessary legal step to citizenship.”

Participating in the citizenship ceremony is actually a requirement for anyone aged 14 and older to become a Canadian citizen.

At the ceremony, a citizenship judge or presiding official, administers the Oath of Citizenship to the soon-to-be Canadians and then presents each person with a citizenship certificate. The new Canadians then sing the national anthem to complete the ceremony.

“Symbolically, the ceremony marks a milestone for those completing the citizenship process,” Wemp added. “It is viewed as welcoming new Canadians to Canada as

well as an occasion to reflect on the meaning of being Canadian.”

Salmon festival executive director Janice Froese said the ceremony can be an emotional experience for both new Canadians and those Canadian by birth.

“What better way to start July and open Canada Day by welcoming 30 new Canadians,” Froese said. “I had tears going down my face when I saw the ceremony for the first time.

The ceremony in Steveston is one of 44 Canada Day citizenship ceremonies taking place across Canada this July 1. According to CIC, one in five Canadians were born outside of Canada, and the country is made up more than 200 ethnic origins.

almon festival mascot Sammy the Salmon and the Spirit of Steveston parade float are now an award-winning pair, after nabbing a couple of awards at the recent Hyack Festival in New Westminster.

The Spirt of Steveston, which made its debut at the Steveston Salmon Festival last year, won the mayor’s award for best community float. Sammy the Salmon won for best mascot.

“We are really proud of our new float and how it is representing Steveston in other communities,” said Janice Froese, salmon festival executive director.

“We used to have a float and were on the local parade circuit for many years and we have returned to doing that again.”

waving at the crowds. The float was commissioned by the Steveston Community Society and is modelled after the many fishing boats that can be seen in Steveston Harbour.

Sammy received a refresh a few years ago, with a new face and body.

The float, along with the 7’2” Sammy the Salmon, will lead the salmon festival parade, which starts

at 10 a.m. at Garry Point Park. The parade route is almost two kilometres and ends just past the Steveston Community Centre, at Moncton Street and Railway Avenue.

f you’ve ever wanted to try out a climbing wall, there will be one at the Steveston Salmon Festival, courtesy of the Richmond Olympic Oval.

“It’s not the same as ours at the oval of course, but it will give people a chance to try it,” said Richmond Olympic Oval spokesman Aran Kay. “We’re going to have quite a large area this year, which is perfect for this.”

There will also be interactive displays and information about the oval for festival attendees to peruse. A bobsled shell will be displayed for people to climb into and take pictures with.

The climbing wall will be located on Moncton Street, by the main stage.

outh activities will return to this year’s salmon festival, giving teens their own area to chill, listen to music and, of course, eat.

Youth involvement coordinator Andrew Chornohus focused on creating a relaxed environment for youths this year, centred around a summer barbecue theme. This is a departure from previous years, when the youth area hosted an annual rock festival, which sometimes got a bit rowdy. Last year,

there were no youth-focused activities.

“This year we are trying something different,” Chornohus said. “We are going to have art, video games and sports. We want it to be more like a picnic.”

The live bands have been replaced with a music DJ. Three Nintendo 64 consoles, projected on outdoor screens, will be available for teens to play. Teens will also have an opportunity to grab one of 100, 4x4-feet panels to create a piece of art, using spray paint. The youth-only barbecue will be extremely affordable, with $1 hot dogs,

and $2 hamburgers, with pop and freezies available as well. Hungry teens who come with no money can score free food, if they participate in one of the activities.

“If they participate in the spray painting, they can get a free hotdog,” Chornohus said. “We’re not going to turn any youth away.”

In previous years, the youth area has attracted anywhere from 100 to 500 attendees, depending on the weather.

The youth area will be at the Steveston Community Centre’s outdoor tennis court and will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

SALMONFestival Calgary marching band to strike up for parade Christopher Sun

he Steveston Salmon Festival parade will see a number of new and returning entries, but the one festival executive director Janice Froese is especially excited for this year, is a marching band from Calgary.

The Bishop Grandin Marching Ghosts is made up of students in Grades 10 through 12, who are enrolled in Bishop Grandin High School’s three-year music program. The marching band is frequently asked to perform at various events within Canada and internationally, making them much in demand and renowned.

“We are excited to have them,” Froese said. “This will be their first time performing at the salmon festival.”

The Bishop Grandin Marching Ghosts was started in 1986 and currently has about 110 members, made up of brass, woodwind and percussion players. About 60 of those members will come out to Steveston to perform at the festival.

“We’re quite mobile and unique as we can set up anywhere,” explained program coordinator Josh Malate, a former band member. “We recently played a private function for the premier of Alberta, during their party convention. We rolled right onto the convention floor, played O

Canada and rolled right out.”

The marching band performed at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and they have participated in competition type performances throughout the United States, Italy and Japan.

“Japan is a hotbed for these kinds of performances,” Malate said. “The Japanese groups are incredibly good.”

“We are adding DJ beats behind some of our songs,” Malate explained. “I don’t know if anyone has done it before [for a marching band], but we’re excited. We are trying to get with the times.”

Besides the marching band, spectators can expect to see a Clydesdale horse, the YVR fire truck, vintage vehicles, decorated

floats, military colour guards, politicians, dignitaries and representations from various community and cultural groups.

The parade starts at 10 a.m. at Garry Point Park and will wind through the streets of Steveston, past the community centre on Moncton Street to Railway Avenue. The 1.9 km route usually attracts 100 entries and is about two hours long.

S

ome of our province’s transit history will be rolled into the Steveston Salmon Festival, courtesy of the local Transit Museum Society.

This will be the second year the volunteer-driven society will bring out its 1947, General Motors bus, which was reconfigured into a mini-museum, with an audio visual system, displays and transit memorabilia from years gone by.

“We were pretty surprised with how popular we were last year,” said Bryan Larrabee, a society director. “We had people coming non-stop.”

The bus to be displayed is actually from Victoria but gives visitors an idea of how buses were 70 years ago, Larrabee explained.

Free souvenirs will be available for the taking, including old transfers and old copies of the Buzzer,

Translink’s free, bi-monthly transit publication, which is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. There will also likely be a lot of reminiscing about the old interurban route, which ran from Steveston to Vancouver. The bus will surely complement Steveston’s Interurban Tram.

“A lot of our own volunteers are knowledgeable of the old days when the interurban ran,” Larrabee said. “We often get old timers who come out and they’ll remember the past and talk about it.”

The volunteer-operated Transit Museum has about a dozen buses from 1937 to 1991, which are brought out for special events and charters, such as weddings and movie shoots.

“Sometimes if there is room, we’ll bring out another bus, but the space we have for the Salmon Festival is pretty packed, so we’re just bringing one,” Larrabee added.

hen Barbara Goodwin was a teenager, she set her sights on becoming a nurse.

She was on track to realizing her dream after completing high school but, while on a practicum at Vancouver’s St. Paul’s Hospital, she dropped out. Her father was diagnosed with cancer and she wanted to be with him in what everyone thought, was his dying days.

“He actually lived, but in those days, you didn’t expect that,” Goodwin said. “I then got married.”

Becoming a nurse became less of a priority as Goodwin focused on starting a family, but her interest in healthcare never wavered.

She helped her mother-in-law cut bandages for the wounded at the Red Cross and became an early supporter to build a hospital in Richmond, joining the Richmond Hospital Health Auxiliary in the early 1960s.

Thanks to a successful referendum, Richmond Hospital opened its doors in 1966, but Goodwin’s involvement would not end.

Her focus turned to raising money for the hospital, becoming a founder of Richmond Hospital’s thrift shop in 1974.

other organizations and became a director of the Richmond Caring Place and the Richmond Community Foundation.

She was also president of Rosewood Manor (a non-profit residential care home for seniors), a board member of the BC Summer Games and she served as a See Career page B17

“I’ve been involved with a lot of things,” Goodwin said, adding she was chair of the recent Richmond Hospital Golf Tournament, and is still actively involved with the hospital and Rosewood Manor. “And I’ve enjoyed all of it.”

Goodwin, 70, said the busiest she has ever been was six years ago when she was sitting on five different boards.

She has since taken a step back and is now involved with three.

Goodwin’s roots in Richmond run deep, which may partly explain her life-long devotion to the community.

Her grandparents moved to Richmond in the early 1900s and Goodwin has lived here her entire life.

Her two daughters still live here and so do most of her seven grandchildren. She also has a great-grandson and a younger sister and brother.

In 2014, Goodwin was recognized for her extensive contribution to the community with the Milan Ilich Award for Leadership.

And on July 1, Goodwin will be recognized again. She is the parade marshal of the 2016 Steveston Salmon Festival parade.

This latest recognition brings Goodwin’s volunteer career full circle, as her first volunteer experience was at Steveston Community Centre, when she was

12-years-old.

“I was shocked at first but felt very honoured,” Goodwin said, describing her initial reaction to the news. “I didn’t anticipate it.”

Goodwin still enjoys attending the salmon festival, which allows her to meet up with family and friends in a fun and festive atmosphere.

She said the festival has changed a lot since she was a child and one thing she misses most, is the pomp and elegance that came with one event, which ended in 1986.

“I miss the Salmon Queen ceremony and the early years,” Goodwin said.

“Everyone was all dressed up for it and it was a more formal atmosphere. It was elegant those days. It was really something.”

Another thing that has changed over the decades is that it has become harder to recruit volunteers.

Putting on an event like the salmon festival requires a lot of volunteers, and its continuation depends on it.

“I would like to see the younger generation step up to the plate so this continues for another 70 years,” Goodwin said. “I wish the salmon festival continued success.”

When she is not busy with her various volunteer work, Goodwin relaxes by playing golf, gardening and travelling.

She also frequents Arizona every year, during the winter.

et your sea legs ready for Ships to Shore Steveston 2016. This year’s festival is offering guests a chance to see Steveston’s nautical heritage from a new perspective.

Thane, a Victoria-native tall ship built in 1972, and Aerial Sea, an environmentallyconscious catamaran, will be offering festival goers a chance to sail through Steveston Harbour to explore and watch for wildlife along the scenic Strait of Georgia, from the vantage point on the Fraser River.

On Canada Day, the festival is also offering a special night sail that will take guests out onto the water where they can watch the Canada Day fireworks display.

Sails on board Thane and Aerial Sea take place on Thursday, June 30 and Friday, July 1. Registering in advance is a must.

SALMONFestival Volunteering creates belonging Christopher Sun

G

iving back to the community through volunteer work has been ingrained in Joanne Nicholson since she can remember.

Both her parents were active at the local Buddhist temple since she was a child and her father was active at the Steveston Community Centre, when first established. One of her first volunteer experiences was in the early 1980s, when her younger sister asked her to participate in a pilot project that would see girls participate in scouting for the first time. Nicholson did, as a scout leader. When she started having kids, she got even more involved with volunteer work, juggling work and family life.

“I saw my parents volunteer throughout their lives and I fell into that,” Nicholson said. “Whenever my kids were involved with something, such as swimming, soccer, lacrosse or Judo, I got involved.”

The special needs educator started volunteering for the Steveston Salmon Festival about 10 years ago, when her children were taking judo at the community centre. She feels volunteering builds a stronger community and helps people feel fulfilled.

“There is more to life than than the daily grind and paying the rent,”

Nicholson said. “People more and more are talking about having a balance in their work and personal life and when you volunteer, it takes you out of just thinking about you, and gives you the opportunity to think about others, which is a great benefit to them and to you.”

For the Salmon Festival, Nicholson has primarily helped with the preparing and serving of the chow mein, which is about as popular as the salmon bake.

It takes up to 70 volunteers two days to chop the 600 lbs of vegetables that are used to make more than 2,000 servings of the dish, and a further 65 volunteers

to sell and serve it.

Nicholson’s three children are now grown up with the oldest being 27 and the youngest 18, but she still continues volunteering at the event.

“We have a lot of fun,” Nicholson said. “And when you get to know each other, this becomes the one time you can see everyone again.”

Volunteering for a number of organizations, she has seen the number of volunteers drop over the years. While young people must volunteer for a certain amount of hours in order to graduate from high school, she wonders how volunteer work became something almost forced upon us instead of something people just want to do.

“When I got involved with volunteering, it wasn’t you have to have so much hours for high school,” Nicholson said.

“It’s not just about getting that magic number for school.”

Nicholson added that without volunteers, the offerings at the Steveston Community Centre, such as swim clubs and the various martial arts courses would be unaffordable to most families.

“The costs are kept low because a lot of people are volunteering their time and knowledge,” Nicholson said.

“Hopefully this will continue. Volunteering builds a strong community and strong ties to it, which is what people look for when deciding where to live.”
