ell, hasn’t Onni been blessed with an effective public relations opportunity.

There’s nothing like innocent children and working parents desperate for quality childcare to pull at our heart strings. And that’s just what has landed on Onni’s doorstep at Imperial Landing.

Generation Daycare, currently located on Trites Road just south of Moncton, is in desperate need of a new home since its landlord served it an eviction notice earlier this month.

The owner of the property is turfing all its current business tenants and is said to be applying for rezoning to build single-family homes.

Generation Daycare is probably not the only business struggling to find a new home, but it’s certainly the most vocal, and for good reason. As any daycare parent knows, location is critical; if it’s not near your kid’s school, it probably won’t work.

So, understandably, the daycare’s owners were thrilled when it appeared space could be found at Onni’s Imperial Landing site nearby. The catch is that a daycare business doesn’t fit the site’s current zoning for mixed maritime use (MMU). And this takes us to the tedious Onni/City saga.

Although Onni had agreed to the MMU zoning when it bought the property — that zoning is what kept the purchase price down — the developer claims it can’t comply. Onni has employed various tactics to pressure city council to change the zoning. Most effectively, it has simply let the buildings stand empty, creating a somewhat desolate looking swath of grey concrete in the heart of Steveston.

But a less-than bustling boardwalk is one thing. Now, Onni has a load of adorable children and their hard-working parents crowding an upcoming council meeting to plead for rezoning so their centre can find a home.

The councillors are going to look decidedly ogre-like if they deny the daycare’s application. However, to do otherwise is to fuel the very real perception that in Richmond, it’s a case of build first, rezone later. In fact, the reason Generation is looking for a new home is because its current landlord is so confident this site will be rezoned residential, they’re already evicting the business tenants.

Moreover, the reason Generation is so desperate for the Onni deal to work is because there is precious little else, given so much of the city has already been rezoned residential.

Obviously, there are times when it makes sense to rezone, but rezoning is the city’s trump card. It’s the bit of power it can wield as it oversees the city’s development. It needs to be done with a view to creating balance and only with compensation. Unless Onni offers the city something meaningful for rezoning, what’s to stop this whole scenario from replaying at the Trites Road site. It already looks to be heading that way.

There is no such thing as free, including trees

Dear Editor, Why close a school when it will be needed in the future?

Daniel Woodward School in Richmond is an example of a valuable asset and closing it is illogical. As other nearby schools go through the renovation process for seismic upgrades, Woodward school has plenty of space and could host the students.

The separate vacant area upstairs of Woodward school is a valuable opportunity for the school district.

Not many schools have a wing that can be sectioned off and used for rentals, so keeping this school open and looking for “outside the box” ideas for the available space makes sense.

Alternatively, the space houses staff from the school district and can be used for other school district purposes, such as administration and student services.

Dear Editor Re: “Tree-owners deserve tax credit,” Letters, June 8.

As much as I found the letter somewhat interesting and somewhat entertaining, I was left trying to understand exactly what the point was.

The bylaws that are referred to have been around for some time, so why complain now.

When someone buys a house, they can see the existing trees and know the consequences.

If they already own a house and plant new trees, the same would apply.

The foundation of the letter writer’s argument is built on the idea that we live in a free society, but we don’t — nor would I want to.

I like having speed limits, stop lights and laws in general, and I am not interested in living in a neighbourhood or society where one homeowner can choose to open a mechanics shop on their residential property and operate day and night if they wish, nor someone building a 10,000 square-foot home on an 8,000 square-foot

houses along No. 5 Road are being redeveloped for highdensity townhouses.

New residential house construction in the area requires secondary suites and, subsequently, this could bring in new students. It makes no sense to close a school that has potential for growth and for other purposes.

The Minister of Education needs to understand that in areas such as Richmond where the cost of land is extremely expensive, selling properties would be very unwise. It’s better to hold these properties and wait for the population growth to catch up.

The ministry needs to allow the districts to get creative with their assets and allow for alternative uses that would enable them to maintain ownership of the lands that schools currently occupy.

The 95 per cent occupancy rule is shortsighted and incredibly unfair.

Dear Editor, Re: “The night I met Duke Ellington,” Voices, June 10.

Nadine Jones had a wonderful article printed in your June 10, 2016 issue, marred only by the statement that Duke Ellington broke the colour bar in the Cotton Club.

While Ellington certainly played the Cotton Club many times, he was not the first entertainer of colour.

The Cotton Club, while located in Harlem initially, had a white’s-only policy for visitors, but the entertainment was all black.

The initial club band, when it opened in 1923, was that of Andy Preer who was black. When Preer died in May, 1927, Duke’s band was hired to succeed him.

That engagement lasted until June 30, 1930. Ellington did return for several engagements thereafter.

Please thank your correspondent, Ms. Jones, for the article. As an Ellington fan for more than 60 years, it’s always gratifying to have Duke and his music remembered.

No one to my knowledge has suggested doing anything outside of the laws already in place; in fact, quite the opposite.

What is being asked is that we follow the laws already in place and that we put on the brakes and ask whether developers should be able to lobby (or dictate, depending on how you look at it) what bylaws they need to follow because it appears, from walking around any neighbourhood in Richmond, that developers just have to ask and they shall receive.

Having developed property myself in the past, I can tell you it makes building so much easier and profitable when you don’t have to deal with those pesky trees.

One final note for Mr. Friesen, and anyone else, the tree that sparked all this debate is on city property, not private, just like so many felled city trees cut to make room for new driveways.

Dear Editor, Quite often, we fail to notice and enjoy some beautiful things and places in our own backyard.

Recently, I was returning from a function at the University of British Columbia and decided to visit the Larry Berg Flight Path Park.

As a long-time resident of Richmond living in the Thompson area, I have passed by this park on numerous occasions. However, it never occurred to me to stop by and visit the park till a few days ago.

I was so impressed by the layout, the information and the surroundings of this beautiful park that I spent a lot of time there reading the information about YVR, walking along the walkways, admiring the view and the wonderful work that YVR has done here.

Watching the planes take off and land is just an added benefit.

It is a great tribute to Mr. Larry Berg who has put YVR on the world map and made it one of the best airports in the world.

I would like to suggest to your readers to visit it whenever they can. It is a lovely, yet a very different kind of park.

Dear Editor, The politicians and special interests who have decided to destroy the Massey Tunnel and sell us a toll bridge clearly are not earning minimum wage.

Richmond residents who work in Delta, and those in Delta who work in Richmond or Vancouver, will pay two tolls every day.

Crossing Golden Ears Bridge costs $4.35, so one might expect Richmond-Delta’s $3.5 billion dollar “Christy Clark Bridge” to cost about the same.

Using the “Christy Clark Bridge” bridge to travel to work each day would cost an additional $2,175 per year.

And then there are the extra trips for kids’ sports events, medical appointments and visiting Aunt Sally.

Or, at least, there were, before those bridge tolls took the money that used to pay for them.

I am guessing Aunt Sally won’t be voting Liberal.

Dear Editor, Richmond’s municipal tax hike is not fair or reasonable.

Like all homeowners, we recently received our home property tax notice, along with an information pamphlet indicating that the City of Richmond proudly purports to limit the increase to 2.11 per cent plus a one per cent reserve, resulting presumably in a 3.11 per cent total increase.

The city also indicates that the lower mill rate adjustment is supposed to generally take into consideration the significant property value increase to offset and limit any tax increase in established areas.

In our case, the 2016 property taxes have increased 10.34 per cent (2015 increase was 6.05 per cent).

We have lived in Richmond in the same detached home for 30 years and we are now retired and living on a fixed income.

This 2016 property tax, together with the ever-increasing utility tax, is just not sustainable or fair, particularly given it is payable with after-tax dollars.

Our OAS increase this year was 1.1 per cent. That is supposed to be linked to the CPI (Consumer Price Index) and on which we pay tax.

The CPP is similar, CPI tagged. Our recent years of tax increases are accelerating.

The amount payable means we defer our property tax portion and that “lien” amount is growing exponentially, to a point where the province will eventually own a significant portion of our home.

The provincial grants have not increased for a number of years. The basic homeowner’s grant has even disappeared for some given that many Richmond property values are now over the $1.2 million qualifying threshold.

Furthermore, as the Richmond population and the relative (property) tax base increases, the city should be able to be more efficient.

We only ever hear that city services are deteriorating and the fees are forever increasing, along with increasing fines and even new fees.

Any city tax increase should be at, or below, the CPI on which all government retirement increases are based.

It is time to press the reset button at city hall on what seems to be out of control spending.

hey can plead their case and bring their kids, but it won’t snap the resolve of veteran Richmond councillor Harold Steves.

The owners of Generation Daycare, their parent clients and some of their children will descend upon city hall in 10 days to appeal to mayor and council to allow the daycare to move into the controversial and vacant Imperial Landing commercial site in Steveston.

Generation’s owners Mike and Agnes Lewis recently had a business licence application turned down by the city for the site on the grounds it doesn’t comply with the zoning.

And with the before- and after-school daycare — already a scarce service in the village — getting evicted Sept. 30 from its current Trites Road location, the pressure is on for the proprietors and parents to find a new base.

The only problem is that the Imperial Landing site owner — Onni Group — has been unable in 10 years to have the area rezoned from its Mixed Maritime Use designation (to which the developer originally agreed).

“It won’t change my mind,” said Steves, who, over the years, has been at the forefront of city council opposition to Onni’s requests.

“Although, we can approve (an amendment to the zoning), but the $20 million profit Onni will make from any rezoning can come back to the city and then we can invest that in

childcare. And that $20 million estimate was five or six years ago, so it must be up around $25 million by now.”

Steves was also surprised to hear city staff had directed the daycare’s owners to Onni as a potential new location and given them the phone numbers to call, adding that it must have been “someone new or very naïve,” who doesn’t know what’s happened before.

“When other parts of Richmond got rezoned, we got amenities; such as at Terra Nova, where we got childcare and affordable housing,” added Steves. “(At Imperial Landing), they got off Scot-free.”

Ironically, Steves said, in the early days of rezoning the Imperial Landing site, he had asked for childcare provision as an amenity.

“But it was put down by other members of council,” laughed Steves.

The Trites Road site where the daycare currently sits is scheduled for demolition in the fall, with an application to rezone from light industrial to residential received by city hall earlier this spring.

However, Steves said he will dig his heels in there, as well. “I’ll be opposing any rezoning of the Trites Road site, that’s for sure.”

The daycare owners and one of their parent customers told the Richmond News on Wednesday how the bid to move into one of Onni’s vacant Imperial Landing commercial properties is likely their last hope of staying in the area, as no other suitable locations can be found.

s everyone frantically scrambled to get their dogs back on the leash, Ray Martyniuk had a sinking feeling in his stomach when realizing Roger — his min-pin Chihuahua cross — was missing.

A few seconds before, Martyniuk and four of his dog-loving friends at the No. 3 and Dyke roads off-leash park, spotted a coyote ghosting past them, only 30 or so feet away.

With all their 11 pets now safely on-leash, including Martyniuk’s two other dogs, Roger’s fearful owner nervously began calling for him. “(The coyote) was walking fast along the path near us, just in the grass,” said Martyniuk of the encounter last Thursday.

“He wasn’t going too fast, but he was having a good look at our dogs. Everybody went into a panic and started grabbing their dogs.

“I got two of mine, but (Roger) was gone.

The coyote was quite far away by now and he ran behind some trees.”

At that point, Martyniuk said he whistled for Roger to come and the little dog darted out of the same trees.

However, in hot pursuit of Roger, was the

coyote. “They were about 100 yards away,” recalled Martyniuk. “Roger is fast, but the coyote was gaining on him.

“We all stood up and were screaming and waving our hands like crazy to scare the coyote but he just kept coming.”

Martyniuk said Roger flashed past him with the coyote about 20 feet behind. “(The coyote) stopped. But he didn’t seem scared at all,” added Martyniuk.

“He then turned and left. I’ve been going there for a couple of years and I’ve never seen a coyote, let alone one as brave as this.”

Martyniuk said there aren’t any notices up at the park warning about coyotes, so he and his dog-owning circle were down there this week, telling everybody to watch out.

The group also contacted the Stanley Park Ecology Society, which monitors the movements of urban wildlife in the region and posts warnings of coyote sightings.

The society told them they had acted correctly in leashing up their pets, but added the coyotes tend to hunt small rodents at night and are usually very fearful of humans.

Maintaining that fear of humans, said the society, is vital for their own survival.

The society advises people to make a “coyote shaker,” — a pop can filled with coins.

C

urled up in the corner of the leather sofa in her mom’s South Arm home, Shaneel Singh is trying her best to keep her emotions in check.

When asked, however, how she felt about the wave of support rolling in for her since she went public with her 11-year fight with debilitating multiple sclerosis (MS), the normally reserved 36-year-old struggles to hold it together.

People that she’s never met before and former elementary school friends that she’s not even seen for 24 years are among the 300-plus donations and messages of support pouring into her GoFundMe campaign.

“It makes me feel so loved; I’m so surprised to see it,” said Singh, wrapping her hands tightly around the cuffs of her hoodie, so she can wipe away the tears now escaping down both of her cheeks.

Singh, who hasn’t been able to work since 2007 because of her worsening condition, wants to say more about her supporters, but her words are being drowned out by the raw sentiment flowing from her eyes.

“There are people coming out of the woodwork from all over to make donations, it’s quite something,” said Shaneel’s husband, Aaron Valera, now stepping in to speak for his wife.

“It’s given her mental strength and optimism. For a long time, we were looking for answers and finally, we’ve found something that might work.

“She was starting to lose hope and I was begging her to keep fighting. It wasn’t until this year that I think she hit rock bottom and maybe she realized, she can only go up the way.

“We’re very private people; so this is a lot for us to put our lives out there.”

he answer Valera speaks of is an apparently ground-breaking, holistic program developed to treat MS. However, it’s still being trialed in Canada and Singh is having to travel to Mexico at the end of June for the month-long therapy, which could cost up to $250,000, hence the GoFundMe campaign — which has raised almost $64,000 — and a fundraiser on June 24 at the Buck & Ear pub in Steveston.

According to Valera, the first phase of the Baja MedGate Program in Mexico treats

CCSVI (chronic cerebral spinal venous insufficiency); which involves an angioplasty of the neck veins.

“It’s all connected to the central nervous system and the brain; if the veins are blocked, it prevents the blood from flowing properly,” said Valera, who has studied intently the program’s reputation around the world. “There’s a link between this and MS.” The second phase involves stem cell therapy, with the trick being that, unlike many such treatments, there’s no chemotherapy element to it.

“It involves mesenchymal stem cells; given intravenously and via a spinal tap,” added Valera.

According to Valera, there is an 80 per cent success rate for patients, with little or

no risk attached. Acknowledging the kind of treatment Singh is trying, the MS Society of Canada makes reference to the research in this country, noting that the federal government is still funding clinical trials and is keeping MS sufferers up to date on the progress.

Opinion among some experts, according to the society’s website, remains divided on the benefits of the treatment.

ingh’s condition has accelerated so much in the last few months, that, she’s had to move out of her home near Granville and Railway avenues and live full-time with her parents in Swansea Drive, near Williams and No. 4 roads.

t my retirement party months ago, everyone asked if I’d be traveling and I said no, that Harvey and I both have elderly, unwell parents, so for now we’d just be staying put.

A couple of months passed, and I realized that we really did need a holiday. We’d both been looking after our nonagenarian parents and their affairs, Harvey from afar, and me from up close, for a long time. And the stress adds up. So, we went to Cancun for two

weeks to indulge in some R&R and it was a pleasure to be disconnected, if only briefly.

The beach was gorgeous, the Mojitos flowed, and we ate like nobody’s business.

What struck me most while we were away was age. Mine. Advancing rapidly. The wrinkles, the saggy skin, the baggy eyes.

When all around me gorgeous young women and men were parading their beautiful, taut bodies and perfect skin, I sat mutely by, lamenting my long-lost youth.

It seemed like not all that long ago I was a pretty bikini-clad woman of 25 pursued by good looking guys. Then, I remembered, I’m 60. And the last time I looked hot was when Justin Trudeau’s father was Prime Minister.

At my age, things like a healthy colon (I should be so lucky), a loving spouse, loyal friends, and supportive family are what count. The rest is dross.

Try though I might to convince myself that outside appearances are just superficial nonsense, I still feel a momentary pang of jealousy when I see beautiful, young people.

There’s a definite sense of loss that accompanies aging, and it can be profound.

First, it’s the physical stuff that fades. Then there’s memory loss. Then you realize that you’re almost “at the front of the line.”

It takes a conscious effort to bring myself back to reality and remember all the positive things about aging: knowledge, perspective,

the wisdom I’ve gained from experience, and so much more. Although we can’t avoid aging, retirement is the time in life to indulge our true passions, pursue different avenues of learning, actively help others, and expand our spirituality. And, in the process, find more meaning and purpose in life.

And that’s really the essence of life anyway, isn’t it? To expand our mind and do good in this world.

So, if you’re unsure about retirement and worried that you won’t have anything to do, remember this: retirement is not a death sentence; it’s a life sentence.

Lunchtime stabbing sends man to hospital Alan Campbell

35-year-old man has been arrested after a lunchtime stabbing incident in south Richmond on Wednesday.

According to police, shortly before 12:30 pm, Richmond Mounties were called to a home in the 5,000 block of Williams Road, near No. 2 Road, after multiple reports of a stabbing.

A 45-year old Richmond man was taken to hospital suffering from multiple stab

wounds. His injuries, say police, are considered serious.

The suspect, described as white, with a shaved head and extensive arm tattoos, fled the area in a silver Mercedes Benz convertible, prior to police arriving.

It’s alleged that, earlier in the day, the suspect was involved in some sort of disturbance near the victim’s home. This led to a verbal confrontation between both parties, before the victim, who was preparing to mow his lawn at the time, was allegedly stabbed by the suspect. Both the victim and suspect are known to each

diesel fuel leak from a City of Richmond tractor spilled onto areas around DeBeck and Dolphin parks last week.

However, according to the city, the spills — which came from a grass mower last Friday — on the paved areas were later absorbed by a compound put down by city staff.

And the areas of grass affected were minimal, said city spokesperson Ted Townsend, adding that the fuel would “generally evaporate within a relatively short period of time.”

Townsend said DeBeck elementary was informed of the leak, but, after inspection, the field areas were deemed safe for children to play on.

Glenn Brown, the local resident who reported the leak, said the smell in the air all across the area was very strong.

“I couldn’t walk my dog on the grass there it was so bad; it was all over the field,” claimed Brown on Tuesday.

“I reported it to the City of Richmond, but I haven’t seen any one down here.”

Unfortunately, added Townsend, the leak wasn’t noticed until after the mower had left the park sites.

“Most of the actual fuel leak occurred along Francis Road while the mower was in transit, when the slow leak worsened due to higher speed operation of the vehicle,” Townsend explained via email.

“Around the same time the operator realized there was a leak, we received a complaint of a fuel spill at DeBeck.

“Our staff advised the school to keep children off the field until we could investigate. We returned to the school site, where we put down “absorb all” compound to soak up the leak on hard, paved surfaces where fuel had leaked.

“We inspected the school park field and found one area with evidence of fuel spill on a pathway at the back of the site. The site was not slippery and our staff decided not to use “absorb all” in that area as it could create a slipping hazard.”

Patrol officers and officers from the police’s Serious Crime Unit canvassed in the area searching for evidence while the LMD Forensic Identification Section processed the scene.

“Shortly after 6:30 pm, sharp-eyed patrol officers spotted the vehicle entering Richmond from Highway 99 by Steveston Highway,” said Richmond RCMP media spokesperson Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

“The vehicle was followed until a tactical vehicle stop could be conducted near the area of No. 5 and Seacliff (roads).

“Multiple officers, including those equipped with the tactical carbine, assisted in taking the suspect into custody.

“It was very much all hands on deck — we mobilized very quickly once we had a better understanding of the events that (had) transpired.

“We are thankful for the assistance from the public in this matter and from our Surrey RCMP colleagues.”

Jason Curtiss Billing, 35, of Surrey, is currently in custody. Crown Counsel has approved one charge of aggravated assault.

Radio club makes contact in community and orbit

For Charles Cohen, a club member and semi-retired physicist who came to ham radios later in life as means of communicating with his wife while sailing, he appreciates the connectedness the hobby provides.

“It gives me a way to talk to people that is independent of the phone system,” Cohen said. “There’s no infrastructure. It’s my antenna and your antenna. I’m technically inclined and get a kick out of figuring out how far I can go (communicate) on as little power as possible.

“It’s neat to be here and hear a signal from France, send something back and get a response.”

One landmark activity the club got involved with a couple of years ago was connecting local high school students with astronauts

aboard the International Space Station, orbiting 300 km above them.

“We were there inspiring, if you will, all these high school kids who have an interest in the sciences. And they were able to talk to astronauts using ham radio technology,” Chan said. “I thought, wow, this is really cool.”

The Richmond club currently has 30 members, ranging from a woman in her 90s, who was a radio operator during the Second World War, to scouting-age youngsters.

“It’s a hobby that’s not restricted to age, primarily because it’s not physically demanding.

It’s mentally challenging,” Chan said. “And as far as the community is concerned, it’s a way of providing support.”

he stereotype of the ham radio operator as a solitary figure reaching out over the airwaves to make contact gets turned on its head next weekend.

That’s when members of the Richmond Amateur Radio Club will be out in force at Garry Point Park during the annual Field Day event to take their place in a network of communicators during an emergency exercise.

It’s a 24-hour test of how they can help make contact to relay information under disasterlike conditions. And Urey Chan, president of the club, and his fellow members are up for the challenge.

“It’s a good test of the club’s ability,” said Chan, 55, who works in marketing and communications. “The value in the exercise is learning how to improvise.”

Last year, when wind conditions at the park were blustery, club members had to be innovative and brace their flimsy antenna against their radio shack trailer. The plan worked and they continued their task of trying to make as many contacts with other ham radio operators as they could.

“In the event of an emergency, our radio station is fully self-contained,” said Eric Scott ,who has been a member of the club for the past seven years. “We can operate off a generator and with the antennas we have, we can basically talk worldwide.

“In the event of something serious going on, we can set up as a communications point,”

he added. “So, it’s kind of a contest. But it’s more of an exercise to see what happens if, for some reason, there’s no (communications) infrastructure.”

The Field Day is also a chance to implement the skills Scott first picked up as a youngster when his uncle, a ham radio operator, gave his younger brother a shortwave radio as a present.

“My brother played with it for about two minutes, lost interest and I loved that thing,” Scott said, adding the radio eventually became his.

Scott, an IT worker, said the appeal for being a ham radio operator during the Field Day is his like of tinkering.

“It’s probably one of my favourite events,” Scott said. “It’s always unique with what you hear out there and who you talk to.”

Chan, who first got exposed to ham radios as an air cadet in early 1970s west Montreal, said he enjoys the social side of radio.

“I never got back to it (ham radios) until my brother-in-law took me to a huge convention in Dayton, Ohio. Plus, electronics is my weakest subject.”

That was five years ago and Chan has not looked back.

“I realized there’s a lot more to it than just electronics. There’s community service, the emergency communications aspect, and we do a lot of volunteer work supporting activities,” Chan said.

Part of that is helping out with communications during the annual Steveston Salmon Festival parade on Canada Day. “We help provide the eyes and ears on that day,” he said.

arlier this morning, Esther Karasenty watched her preschool class stare down the world’s tallest mountain without leaving our flat-as-a-pancake city.

Base camp was actually a residential construction site. The mountain — it was a pile of sand, found during a walk in the Seafair neighbourhood of their Shalom Preschool classroom.

“Children here are not used to climbing trees,” says Karasenty in a post-preschool conversation on miniature chairs. “So, they climbed this mountain and it was really hard for them. When they reached the top you should have seen them. It was like Everest or Kilimanjaro—they just conquered it.”

Karasenty is the manager and teacher of Shalom Preschool, a 30-year institution based at Beth Tikvah Synagogue in Richmond. Children, she says, learn through their senses. That’s why she encourages play with simple things, such as air, water, dirt — and sand piles.

Karasenty grew up in Israel and remembers her own childhood fondly: “A lot of nature, we played outside, we had a milkman who delivered the milk home. It was an amazing life. Israel is beautiful.”

But after living in the Middle Eastern country for three decades, a suicide bomb attack near her home in Tel Aviv prompted her to leave. Work took her around the

world, including Brazil, her last home before moving here 12 years ago.

“The demands are very high on children in Brazil. Mostly they don’t have a childhood over there,” says Karasenty, a mom of six. “It’s high security, and it’s very stressful for the children.”

Neither she nor her husband had visited Canada before deciding to move here. They researched “the best place to raise children” on the Internet and found Richmond.

The multilingual mom began teaching at Beth Tikvah’s Hebrew School, and was later invited to help at the preschool. Without a background in teaching children, Karasenty went back to class herself, earning qualifi-

cations in early childhood education, infant and toddler instruction and in teaching special needs students in early childhood settings. She’s now pursuing a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education.

“It’s fascinating. Children’s brains amaze me,” she says. “Learning is something that’s in you to do. A child is born with the willingness to learn. It’s just who (they are). I don’t see myself as someone who is going to teach children. I’m more coaching children.”

Karasenty loves learning and reads in Hebrew, English, Portuguese and Spanish. Books of interest range from studies of children with special needs to biographies

to her current read, Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s book on the impact of rare events, The Black Swan. (“It’s about economics. I like math as well so it fits in.”)

As a preschool teacher, Karasenty has a particular focus on social and emotional learning — believing that a socially healthy and emotionally resilient child will be a natural and inquisitive learner. Children learn by themselves, she says, but they also have needs. She aims to help children express them.

“A child doesn’t wake up in the morning and say, ‘Oh I’m going to turn my parents’ day into a disaster.’ They don’t say that, they just have needs. If you understand a child’s needs, then you can help them,” she says. “They’re human beings. They’re short, but they’re human beings.”

Shalom Preschool is named with the Hebrew word for welcoming, farewell and peace, and it’s open to learners from age two to five. Other schools separate children by age, but Karasenty believes children grow in an environment of different ages and abilities. They learn from each other, help each other and develop empathy, she says.

They also learn from others — people and sand piles — while exploring the neighbourhood.

“I try to make the children know the people around here so they feel a part of the community. It’s something that’s disappearing here in Richmond — the sense of community. When we walk on the path we say ‘hi’ to the people who pass by. Sometimes people stop to talk to us.”

The First People of ‘Richmond’ GRAEMEWOOD Staff Reporter

here was no thudding of trucks on bridge decks, roaring of airplanes, sounding of ship horns, screeching of wheels. The sounds of the city that now echo over the Salish Sea did not persist for the ancestral Coast Salish people, who lived alongside and in what is now known as Richmond.

In fact, Richmond didn’t even exist when the Aboriginals first planted roots in the region.

“We’ve been welcoming people to this area before there was land to stand on,” explained Musqueam councillor Morgan Guerin, speaking from his home on the Musqueam reserve in South Vancouver, a stone’s throw from Richmond.

The Musqueam are some of the first people of this land, now known as Richmond, and this Saturday marks National Aboriginal Day, a day for Aboriginal communities across Canada, including here in Richmond, to celebrate their culture.

Today, it is thought that about two in every 100 Richmondites has Aboriginal ancestry.

It is a community that continues to find, and fight for, its voice after an era of what can be described as genocide and cultural genocide against Aboriginals.

“The Musqueam are part of your history,” said Guerin. “If you come to live here, you need to know the history of this land, and it doesn’t start 150 years ago.

“Our oral history predates the land of Richmond,” noted Guerin.

RICHMOND RISES About 9,500 years ago, Richmond rose from the silt deposits of the Fraser River, which didn’t exist along the shores of the main Musqueam village, north of where Sea

Island is now.

Imagine a shallow, open ocean, from South Vancouver to Tsawwassen. Settlements were also set up where North Delta now exists, closer to the then mouth of the river.

By 3,500 years before present day, Lulu Island had finally stabilized. It was around this time that Guerin explains that the ancient village of c/-sna1-m was a base to one of the largest ports in the world.

The Musqueam are Coast Salish people, who lived up and down the shores of the Pacific Northwest and were once the largest group of Aboriginals north of California.

They speak Halkomelem or, more specifically to the Musqueam, h0n/ q/0min/ 0m/ .

According to the Archeological Heritage Resource Overview of Richmond, by Dr. Leonard Ham in 1987, what is now Richmond belonged to the Musqueam, Tsawwassen and Kwantlen families. However it is believed that the Musqueam used the land the most, particularly in the preceding 2,000 years.

“The resources came to our door. We had to protect them, and, because of that, our culture flourished,” said Guerin, who notes it’s important to recognize that land was not privately owned in the sense modern society knows today. Rather, the land was passed down by generations.

Notably, Aboriginal families from Vancouver Island also had rights to use resources from Richmond’s many islands. Guerin said oral histories indicate peaceful times amongst coastal tribes.

In the thousand years preceding present day — and before a smallpox outbreak spread rampantly in villages and temporary settlements in the 1780s, killing about 75 per cent of the population — it is believed that as many as 2,000 people lived in present-day Richmond during the winter.

However, when the fish came, the population ballooned to as many as 20,000.

The Coast Salish gathered berries and roots, and hunted deer, muskrats and beavers as they navigated through the grasslands and clusters of spruce forests.

And they undoubtedly fished for salmon, sturgeon, seals and sea lions. All of the natural resources they used still exist to some extent in Richmond to this day.

Salmon season (late summer) was a time for potlatching, said Guerin. Richmond had an extensive network of salmon-spawning sloughs discharging into the river and Stur-

Along these inside canoe passages — totalling an estimated 101 kilometres — small seasonal camps would be marked by rising smoke and good conversation.

After the smallpox outbreak, the region was under populated, according to Capt.

George Vancouver, noted Ham. Vancouver’s journals spoke of abandoned villages with scattered human bones.

“The Coast Salish of Richmond did not escape the ravages of this disease,” wrote Ham. The Musqueam name comes from “people of the eel grass,” said Guerin, and it is said that the flowery grasses (x.m-2k.-y/-m) went extinct when the people started dying.

Although the Truth and Reconciliation

Commission only acknowledged “cultural genocide” on the part of European settlers, it is common for Aboriginal leaders throughout North America, such as Guerin, to drop the word “cultural.”

“Genocide did happen. People handed us diseased blankets to remove us from the equation. What couldn’t be killed off, that’s when the cultural genocide occurred,” he said.

n Small villages marked Richmond

Early Richmond council meeting minutes from the 1880s contain frequent references to Musqueam resistance to encroachment upon their villages, noted Ham. The Musqueam never had a name for Richmond. Rather, they named spots along the shoreline. For instance, Terra Nova was Spul’u’kwuks (Anglicized), meaning “bubbling water,” for the gas deposits coming through the sloughs. It was a Musqeaum fishing village, but now it’s a subdivision with a namesake elementary school.

A chart from 1885 shows “Indian” occupation of Garry Point. The park is named after the Musqueam Point family, who lived there before being removed.

Aboriginals were afforded little respect by Christian settlers. A Musqueam summer camp site at Steveston Wye (now Railway Avenue and Garry Street) was named Kwlhayem, or a “place having driftlogs on the beach.” Testaments indicate that what is now the Westwind neighbourhood was an Aboriginal burial ground. Settlers simply moved bodies further into the bushes to extend Railway to Moncton Street.

“The village site was abandoned by the Indians after the area was bought up for farming,” wrote Ham. With development, the fishing and navigation sloughs that were so fundamental to the Musqueam culture disappeared. And, See Aboriginal page 21

Aboriginal community unites to tackle challenges From page 20 in 1987, it was noted by Ham that only nine of 21 archeological sites remained.

Around this time, as noted in the history book Child of the Fraser, there were clashes between whites and Aboriginals.

Aboriginals remained in Steveston as workers at canneries, although they were subjected to racism. Those who left retreated to reserves and children were sent to residential schools.

REPLANTING THE GRASS The irreparable damage caused by the residential school system persists to this day. The physical and mental abuse inflicted by the Christian missionaries has scarred past generations, leaving social and economic gaps in the present generation of Aboriginals, according to many in the Aboriginal community, such as Marshall Thompson, executive director of Pathways Aboriginal Centre.

“Often, family isn’t around, or they’ve been in care, and they’re disenfranchised from their family and band,” said Thompson, speaking specifically to young, at-risk Aboriginal mothers, who are a primary concern for Pathways.

The centre, located on Alberbridge Way, is a way to connect Aboriginal people living in Richmond with one another. Social services are provided, but also fun activities for families, such as smudge making, bannock baking, traditional dance lessons, education programs and simply hanging out watching movies in the lounge.

Donda Humchitt, 47, is one of the most active members at the centre, described by staff as a “cultural advisor.”

“I used to find myself going to Vancouver for different things or to find community members, but coming here, we’re finding ourselves as a small community. . . We’re pulling together,” said Humchitt, who grew up in Bella Bella and Campbell River.

Her story is one that is, much like most Aboriginals, not void of conflict and troubles. Luckily, she wasn’t forced into a residential school like her siblings.

But today, as a single-parent and seasonal fisher, she raises four nephews as her foster children along with her three biological sons.

A big issue facing Aboriginal children is disconnect with their culture and history.

The latest emotional rollercoaster occurred last month at a special Aboriginal graduation ceremony at Hugh Boyd secondary.

“These kids didn’t know where they’re from. They’d be asked, ‘What is your background?’ And they didn’t know. It hurt my feelings, but it hurt my kids’ feelings even more. They’re all boys and they all came home and asked, ‘How come they don’t know who we are or where we’re from?’”

Helping bring awareness to Aboriginal people is Jelica Shaw, program coordinator at the centre.

“We like to celebrate who Aboriginal people are and their successes. By participating in this (graduation) ceremony, it’s the first step in beginning to know where you’re from,” said Shaw, who helps organize, among many other things, a homework club whereby Aboriginal university students tutor high school students.

Shaw said cultural knowledge has allowed youth “to navigate through a lot of bullying and racist remarks.”

“Our after-school program for older youth, some of them are so excited to bring friends from other cultures to experience something that’s more traditional,” said Schroeder.

n Stigmatization continues

To be certain, said Thompson, the centre is facing an uphill battle in many respects.

For one, it’s underfunded for the programs that are needed, especially for at-risk parents and children under the age of six.

“If you put the right circle around someone it works,” said Thompson.

But that doesn’t usually happen. The Ministry of Children and Family Development has no problem taking a child away from a family, however what often happens is they get lost in the system, said Thompson, who, during the course of a conversation with

the Richmond News, described Aboriginal families living in dirt-floor basement suites in east Richmond, a young mother trying to escape prostitution and a continued effort to steer at-risk youth away from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

Systemic discrimination continues, noted Thompson.

For instance, the 2011 census showed Richmond had an Aboriginal population of 1.2 per cent. Thompson noted the centre found most of its clients failed to report their mixed status due to a misunderstanding of the forms. He pegs the Aboriginal population at about 2.5 per cent. Underreporting means less funding for programs.

“The other issue, and something we’ve come up to in our community, is when we try to raise concerns about what’s going

on, when you think it’s 1.2 per cent of the population, people think it’s not a priority,” said Thompson.

He noted about one quarter of students at Richmond’s school for at-risk children is Aboriginal.

“So, why are 20-30 per cent of our youth in an at-risk program and only, supposedly, one to 2.5 per cent of the population is Aboriginal?”

One problem could be how Aboriginal youth are looked upon in the education system.

In an ironic case of what could be described as “reverse discrimination,” Thompson said Aboriginal families prefer not to identify as such because the children will be taken out of class to participate in special programs to “help” them.

“A lot of families don’t check the box because they get pulled out of class” by Aboriginal groups, for extra assistance.

“Then all the other kids look at them and say ‘What’s going on? Why are you different?’ rather than try to just educate classes about Aboriginal ancestry and allowing someone to increase pride and self-disclose and seek support, if they need it. It’s almost a reverse discrimination — we’re going to pull you out and support you.

“As soon as a child discloses they’re Aboriginal, statistics show their teacher’s expectations are reduced,” said Thompson.

This is why there are only about 200 Aboriginal students registered in the Richmond School District, despite there being several hundred more.

“If they’re in foster care, they need to check the box. And there are about 200 kids in foster care in Richmond,” said Thompson, noting the graduation rate for registered Aboriginals (ie. those in foster care) is 60-70 per cent, whereas the youth who attend his centre are graduating at a 90-plus per cent clip.

Shaw noted that university transcripts also show if an Aboriginal student received special assistance.

What is needed is a holistic approach, argue the centre’s workers, which brings an upbeat Shaw to explain National Aboriginal Day celebrations occurring in Steveston this Saturday, at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery.

“It’s going to be great. The kids have put so much time into their dance,” said Shaw, of the Richmond Powwow Dance Group.

The group is comprised of Aboriginal students of all ages.

“It’s an opportunity for the greater community to come see we do have an Aboriginal community. And it’s a big boost to the self-esteem of these kids to show what they’ve been doing in the school year.”

Also on tap at the event is entertainment from SisterClan, Stories with Henry Charles (Musqueam) and Stay in School Awards.

A new era for Richmond Hospital

The history of Richmond Hospital is a story of leaders and champions who care passionately about local health care. We witnessed this again earlier this month, when Richmond Hospital achieved a major milestone as the Province announced that in partnership with Vancouver Coastal Health and Richmond Hospital Foundation, planning is beginning on a new acute care tower.

After 50 years, the original hospital tower is obsolete and we thank the Province, and our local MLAs, the Honourable Teresa Wat, the Honourable Linda Reid and MLA John Yap for their hard work to help move us towards a new era of care. We also want to thank his worship Malcolm Brodie and all of City Council who have served as champions of this growing need and passed a resolution in Council in February of this year. Here to elaborate on the significance of the announcement is our Board Chair, Kyle Shury.

“It was close to 60 years ago that a group of people in this community—true leaders in their community—began the dialogue around the need for a hospital.

Imagine then roughly 50,000 residents in the City of Richmond. No hospital. No facility for local health care on the island.

That group started the dialogue. In 1962 there was a referendum on the need for a hospital and residents of Richmond voted overwhelmingly in favour of a hospital— with over 90% in favour—and they voted for an increase of property taxes with residents paying 35%, the provincial government paying 50% and the federal government paying 15%. But collectively everyone worked together and in 1966 Richmond Hospital opened its doors and a new era of local health care began.

Fast forward to today and here we are. Our population has more than quadrupled. Construction is booming all around us. But our hospital facility has not kept pace and is not reflective of the care that’s given here. That’s what we need to change.

I’ve had the great pleasure over the last six years of serving on the Foundation board

volunteering time to working with others in the hospital, getting to meet many of the people who work here but also getting to see firsthand our facilities.

I myself have a growing family. I have three young children, and I have two aging parents who live in the community.

I’d like to say we don’t use this hospital often, but it seems between the cuts and bruises and aging of my parents, that we use this facility more and more, and it’s such a critical element of our community.

In today’s environment, people may sit back and think that local health care is solely the responsibility of the government and that it’s not their issue.

The reality is it’s truly everybody’s issue, and we all need to work together to help advance this.

oday, I explore the wine delights of a small Osoyoos winery with an unusual name, Moon Curser Vineyards .

This is a family owned winery with Chris Tolley farming and making the wine and his wife, Beata, doing the business end of things.

It’s located in the hottest and driest wine region in B.C., and qualifies as Canada’s only desert.

Opened in 2004 as Twisted Tree, the Tolleys later decided to change their identity to Moon Curser to reflect on their renegade choice of grapes planted and to evoke the colourful stories of the regions past.

During the gold rush, many American miners would smuggle the Canadian gold across the border on moonless nights. Obviously, they would curse when the moon lit up their clandestine activities.

One of my favourite whites is their 2014 Afraid of the Dark ($21.90). This is a Rhone-style white, not common in the Okanagan. It has a trio of three grapes in the blend: Roussanne, Viognier and Marsanne.

As you might expect with a wine called Afraid of the Dark, it has a sunny disposition. A fruity unoaked white, it enjoys an aroma of grapefruit, nectarine. On the palate savour its ginger and citrus flavour.

Another unique white is the 2014 Arneis ($25.90) which has been rescued from extinction. Arneis means “little rascal” in it’s home in Piedmont because it was a challenging grape to grow. But at Moon Curser they are making delicious wine from it. Expect a floral personality enhanced with pear, tangerine and apple along with honey and almonds and a firm texture and dry finish.

If you fancy a red, uncork the Moon Curser 2013 Syrah ($26.90). The grapes are grown in three Osoyoos East Bench Vineyards and aged in small barriques made of New French and Eastern European Barrels. It has the characteristic black pep-

per character that French Syrah’s enjoy.

There are also ripe black cherries and other dark fruit integrated with the oak immersed in a smooth medium body Another favourite of mine is the 2013 Border Vines ($26.90). This is a Bordeaux blend with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon being the main ingredients. Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Carmenere complete the cuvée.

As you might expect from having five varietals blended together, this is a complex wine with layers of scents and flavours. Delicious cherry, blackberry, and cassis greet your nose and palate along with cedar, tea leaves, and chocolate, thanks to the Carmenere. Smooth and ready to drink, but will age for at least five years.

They also have a Cabernet Merlot blend plus single varietals of Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Carmenere. You could open these and blend away with various amounts of each to create your own unique Bordeaux blend. How is that for hosting a wine party with friends?

council had upheld the new zoning bylaw, “when they turned down an application to subdivide with less than 66 feet frontage.” In February, the paper started running “House Suggestions,” with plans and drawings by the Small House Planning Bureau (St. Cloud, Minnesota). The house sizes ranged from 28 x 24 to 30 x 38 feet.

Between 1950 and 1951 three further agencies entered Richmond’s real estate market.

By 1955, Newcombe Realty, Delta Realty and Rivers Realty were advertising in the paper, and Richmond Realty, at 688 No. 3 Road, had enough work to keep 10 salespeople (including women) busy.

House prices were climbing. A four-room stucco bungalow, with large fruit trees, close to school and bus, could be had for $4,200 (half in cash) in May 1951. Less than four years later, in February 1955, Richmond Realty advertised a two-bedroom house for $8,500; a bungalow on a corner lot for $11,500. The

following year, the asking price for a twobedroom house was $10,200, whereas a socalled executive house, with three bedrooms, cost $13,750. In April 1956, A. E. Austin & Co. placed an ad announcing: “Lots for sale / Attention Builders. 30 lots, choice location; $1,050 a lot, can be sold separately.”

Curious, isn’t it, that 60 years later, it sounds

strangely like the message on signs posted along some of Richmond’s arterial roads?

Only the price tag has changed.

Richmond shipyard has deployed what could be an energy game-changer for remote communities along B.C.’s coast.

Meridian Marine Industries spent the better part of a year fabricating Lions Bay-based Water Wall Turbine’s 550-ton, tidal energy vessel, capable of generating up to one megawatt of power for Dent Island Lodge, northeast of Campbell River.

Meridian’s president Jim McFadden explained the project represents a significant investment for his company, which specializes in mobile ship repairs and marine fleet maintenance, including BC Ferries vessels.

Meridian actually took a loss on the prototype project, which launched into the Fraser River last week, explained McFadden.

Normally, the company has about 12 employees, but it took on about 25 more, including eight apprentices and Aboriginal workers to complete the vessel in its shipyard, next to the Canada Line Bridge. More than 24,000 man-hours of labour went into the fabrication process.

“We’re hoping it’s a success and we get repeat orders. Clean energy is a new field for us. Even though it’s a vessel we’re building here, there are different components we haven’t worked with before. We also faced some design challenges,” said McFadden, whose workforce specializes in the likes of welding, hydraulics, piping, machining and fire protection.

“No one’s ever built one of these before.

“The beauty of tidal energy, as opposed to solar or wind or any other renewable energy, is that it’s predictable,” noted Baker.

When the tides are churning water through the eight massive blades and turning the turbines, peak energy production could power 250 homes. When the tide is slack, excess power is stored by the Tesla batteries onshore. A backup diesel generator still kicks in, if there’s an emergency.

The vessel, which has an estimated lifespan of up to 40 years, could provide power for remote villages or other lodges.

“They all need power and they’re all on expensive diesel,” noted Baker.

Presently, diesel costs the lodge about 65 cents per kilowatt. Baker’s target is to bring costs down to 15 cents. An added bonus, he noted, is the fact diesel barges will no longer need to be shipped to Dent, eliminating spill risks. And marine mammals, such as seals, could easily go for a ride through it, without being harmed. A grated gate prevents them from doing so, however. The vessel is approved by Environment Canada, noted Baker.

The prototype vessel cost about $5.6 million in total, including a federal Clean Energy Fund grant of $2.25 million. The grant, said Baker, helped investors mitigate risk. Accepting the prototype also saves the lodge money, if everything goes accordingly.

Meridian was founded by McFadden and business partner Tom Ferns in 1995, who met one another while working in a Port of Vancouver shipyard, after emigrating from Britain. Skilled labour is supplied by the Marine Workers and Boilermakers Industrial Union. The company moved from Vancouver to its existing location in Richmond three years ago.

Chamber talks green buildings Local businesses that utilize sustainable technologies sat down last week with B.C.’s Minister of Technology, Innovation and Citizen’s Services, Amrik Virk, to discuss energy efficiency in buildings.

on our future. Sometimes in a business, you have to step up and take a gamble. Most businessmen have done that. Some end up the right way, some end up the wrong way, but we’re hoping this will be a success,” said McFadden.

The portable vessel floats on the water and is about 28-metres long and 17-metres wide.

It has a draft of 4.5 metres and is about threequarters the size of a Vancouver SeaBus. The vessel must withstand strong West Coast storms, noted Russ Baker, vice-president of strategic business development for Water Wall Turbine, the vessel’s developer.

“There’s so much steel in here it would rival an icebreaker. You can imagine if it’s in a 10-knot current and all those deadheads are coming at it,” said Baker.

McFadden’s crew was charged with putting together all the pieces: Blades, turbine, generator, haul, outer shell and electrical components.

Baker said the prototype took nine years to develop. He said if things go well, the company could produce several vessels each year, hopefully with Meridian.

“With the next one, you can refine the building, cut back on man hours and claw profits back,” said McFadden, noting the prototype needed to be fail-proof.

“Hopefully we can pump these things out of here, two at a time, it would be perfect,” said McFadden, who built his company from the ground up about 20 years ago.

While the vessel has a 1-MW capacity, the Dent Island prototype will only generate up to 500 kilowatts — more than enough to power the remote lodge, which presently spends about $250,000 annually on diesel.

ore than 300 airport executives from 20-plus countries and six continents gathered in Richmond at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel this week for the SMART Airports and Regions Conference and Exhibition.

And according to Tourism Richmond officials, the event was a resounding success.

“The delegates to this conference represented some of the biggest air transportation hubs from around the world,” said Eda Koot, chair of Tourism Richmond’s board of directors. “We

were very fortunate to have local leaders on the panels and discussions, as well as the opportunity to host and showcase Richmond as a leading airport city.”

The SMART Airports and Regions Conference and Exhibition has previously been hosted in cities such as Atlanta, Munich, and Beijing.

Much of the discussions and presentations that took place in Richmond centred on economic development and growth of airports not only as air transportation hubs but as catalysts for urban growth and job creation.

“Anecdotally, many of the participants came away with some excellent examples of how they can potentially develop their regions, much like we’ve done with YVR,” said Tracy Lakeman, CEO of Tourism Richmond. “From the discussions held, it is clear that YVR is a world leading example of how to best develop infrastructure in consultation with the surrounding region.

“The collaboration between tourism and air transportation hubs can be key to the success of any airport and I think we were able to clearly demonstrate

this to all attendees,” she added. “As the largest employer in Richmond, YVR’s 24,000 employees and Richmond’s 14,000 direct tourism-related positions should be proud of the example they’ve been to the international air transportation community.”

Participants were able to also tour the facilities at YVR, the Richmond Olympic Oval, and the BCIT Aerospace and Technology Campus.

This was the first foray into Canada for SMART and the next conference will be held in Singapore in 2017.

ichmond’s Asheeshpal Jagdeo, a student at BCIT, won the bronze placement in Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machining at the national Skills Canada competition held in Moncton, New Brunswick on June 5 – 8.

Asheeshpal earned the opportunity to go to the national competition after winning gold at the Skills Canada BC event on April 13 in Abbotsford, making him the provincial representative in the competition.

Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machining is the automation operating by a computer of all machines such as lathes, milling machines, saws, grinding machines, drilling and boring machines, precision-measure tool and hand and power tools.

The Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) is the only national, multi-trade and technology competition for students and apprentices in the country. Every year, more than 500 young people from all regions of Canada come to SCNC to participate in over 40 skilled trade and technology competitions.

By providing a forum where Canadian youth can compete at the national level, SCNC provides hands-on work experience related to skilled trade and technology careers.

Young business stars sought

J

unior, would-be entrepreneurs may want to take note that there are opportunities to practise their craft with the help from some of Richmond’s top business people during the upcoming session of Yell (Young Entrepreneur Leadership Launchpad).

There are spots still open for the “hothouse” experience for high school-aged students interested in developing their business skills through a series of classes and competitions against each other and students in other school districts, who are also enrolled in Yell.

This is the program’s third year in operation. It was developed by a trio of entrepreneurs, Punit Dhillon, Rattan Bagga and Richmond’s Amit Sandhu, a McNair grad, who is CEO of his family’s development firm, Ampri Group.

Starting each September, it offers space for up to 30 students.

Last year, YELL partnered with some local firms to allow students to pay visits to their premises so they could see first-hand how companies operate and hear from some industry leaders in person. Trips in Richmond were organized to visit White Water West, a leading designer and manufacturer of waterpark and water slide equipment, and Procurify, a cloud-based procurement

software company.

YELL’s school year-long program is divided into three segments. In the fall it kicks off with its Business Accelerator which features weekly sessions on a variety of business topics that include leadership, communication and presentation skills, corporate finance, business law, branding, marketing and social entrepreneurship.

In the second segment, called the Idea Incubator, the students focus on real world business situations and divide into groups to brainstorm a business concept.

Once they have agreed on one, the students are then matched up with a mentor from the local business community who help guide their efforts into developing a business plan for their concept.

In the final segment, the teams enter the Ventre Challenge portion of the YELL program where they compete with other team in their school district for the right to present their business ideas to a panel of investors and business leaders. Those judged as champions will then have an opportunity to compete in a provincial business plan competition.

Matti Academy dominates Canadian team Mark BOOTH

he Shakiru Matti Squash Academy has made a breakthrough at the national team level in a big way.

The Richmond-based program will represented for the first time at this summer’s Battle of the Border event in Niagara-on-the-Lake, with a whopping five members in Canadian team colours.

That is more than any other club in the country.

The event will see Squash Canada’s top up-andcoming players squaring off against the United States over four days in three age divisions — U17, U15 and U13. The 24-player Canadian team features eight returning players.

The roster was determined through various selection criteria tournaments across the country and at the recent Canadian Junior Championships.

Matti Academy members have come close to making the Battle of the Border team before — led by Alex and Matthew Toth who have since continued their careers at the university level in the US. This time, the Sport Central program were already guaranteed two spots thanks to Gabriel Yun and Sarah Cao each reaching the national final in their respective divisions.

The number continued to grow with Andrea Toth and Jacob Lin being named to play at the U17 and U13

levels respectively.

Toth, 16, actually entered the nationals as the No. 1 seed but was upset in the quarter-finals. However, she had already earned plenty of selection points thanks to her strong play at earlier tournaments.

Lin, who is just 10, earned bronze at the Canadian championships, highlighted by his win over No. 2 seed Griffen Manley. He still has two more years of eligibility at the U13 level and is destined to earn the No. 1 ranking next season with the last member of the Toth family, 10-year-old Joseph, right behind him.

The Academy received further good news this week when Cynthia Cao was a late addition to the Canadian team. She was fourth at nationals at the U17 level.

“I knew some of them were going to be on Team Canada but was not expecting four,”smiled Shakiru Matti, a native of Nigeria who coached the Guatemala and Mexico national teams before settling in Canada. “Our initial goal was to be the No. 1 club in B.C. (for producing national level athletes) and then Canada. We have accomplished that but there is still plenty of work to do. Ideally, we want to be top 20 in the world. That is the next step.

“I’m glad to see our players get this kind of recognition but I also don’t want

them take their eye of the ball either.”

Matti credits the Academy’s tremendous progress over the past few months to a different training approach. He came back with new ideas after attending

the British Open earlier this year.

“That really opened my eyes,” he continued. “I realized the intensity needed to be much higher at our training sessions. It wasn’t making major adjustments.

Just little things like no cell phones and being on time.

“You can’t change the amount of the amount of hours (due to court availability) but you can change the intensity and the approach to it. We saw the difference

at the first selection tournament in Victoria. It was obvious things were going in the right direction.”

The Battle of the Border is slated for Aug. 4-7 and will take place at the White Oaks Resort and Spa.

Young skaters have an opportunity to start their summer off with a steady diet of ice time and fun.

By popular demand, the Connaught Skating Club is hosting its first-ever Junior Academy Spring Fun Camp — June 27-30 — at the Richmond Ice Centre. The four day camp is designated for skaters ages 5-8 and features plenty of on and off ice activities.

Each session runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“We have been hearing from a lot of parents that they wanted some kind of end of the year school event where they could drop their kids off, go to work and come back pick them up,” explained Connaught Director of Programs Keegan Murphy. “After years, we thought we would try it for one

week.

“The kids are under coach supervision for the duration of the day. There are two hours of on ice instruction, two hours of specialized off ice instruction as well as crafts and games. Parents are welcome to stay or leave them.”

Murphy says the camp is somewhat an extension of the club’s Junior Academy which is designated for the same age group of skaters who have been identified through Canskate programs run by the club, city and Olympic Oval.

Although Junior Academy participants are given priority for the Spring Fun Camp — Murphy says others are welcomed, although they will be tested on their skating ability first. So far, 18 of the maximum 30 camp spots have been filled. The cost is $325.

Richmond trio set to compete at Harry Jerome Classic A

trio of hometown athletes are scheduled to compete in Friday’s Harry Jerome Track Classic at Swangard Stadium.

Race walker Evan Dunfee, sprinter ShaeAnne Davis and high jumper Emma Kimoto will be using the meet as preparation for the upcoming Canadian Track and Field Championships/Olympic Team trials in Edmonton July 7-10.

Dunfee will be competing in the 5,000 metre race walk event at 6 p.m. The event

will basically be a sprint for the 25-year-old who is the Pan American Games champion over 20 kilometres and also among the world’s best at 50 km. He is already a lock for the Canadian team headed to the Summer Olympic Games in Rio. Teammates and training partners Inaki Gomez and Ben Thorne will also be competing Friday.

Davis, 23, will be competing in the women’s 100 and 200 metres at 7:50 p.m. and 8:50 p.m. respectively. The McRob-

erts graduate is currently ranked No. 3 in Canada over 100 metres with a 2016 best clocking of 11.43, recorded back in April in California.

Kimoto will be competing in the women’s high jump event at 8:08 p.m. The 24-yearold McMath/Indiana University graduate is currently ranked No. 4 in Canada.She was third at the 2015 Canadian Nationals.

The Jerome Classic will also include Canadian sprinting star Andre De Grasse — who is scheduled to compete in both the 100 and 200 metre events — 800 metre world silver medalist Melissa Bishop and Pan Am Games javelin gold medalist Liz Geadle.

Ticket prices range from $10 for general admission to $25 for a finish line seat. Children 13 and under are free.
