trolling around a rather “salty” sports bar up a side street in a small town on Mexico’s Pacific Coast recently, it was clear customers from around the globe had patronized this popular watering hole over the decades.

Yoyo Mo’s, in the “curious” oceanside “resort” of Bucerias, is a regular haunt of expats and tourists from Europe, the U.S. and Canada, where the bar’s owner hails from.

They had all left their friendly “dent” on Yoyo Mo’s, marking their territory, so to speak, on the bar’s walls and ceilings with donated jerseys of their beloved sports teams.

From the world of soccer I spotted jerseys from fans of Man. United, Barcelona and, from my native Scotland, Rangers and Celtic.

And the giants of the “good ole game” were proudly festooned around Yoyo’s, as well, with the Flames, Canucks, Blackhawks, Oilers and the Sockeyes taking pride of place.

Yes…“Sockeyes” – of Richmond.

“Really?” I muttered, as my attention arrested during my mini-tour of Yoyo Mo’s walls.

Whose jersey is this? And why’s it up there?

I guess they’re proud of their hometown team and “why not?” I said to the barman — let’s call him Mo. I remember vaguely (I was on vacation) being asked by Mo what Richmond was like.

“Ehhhhh,” I pondered, wondering how to describe a Canadian city that’s about 70 per cent of Asian ethnicity, with the remainder predominantly Caucasian and South Asian.

“It’s nice,” I replied. I wasn’t sure what to say. I’m certain he didn’t have the time, nor inclination, to hear the full story.

Fast forward a few weeks and I find myself knee-deep in a second, six-hour marathon public meeting in as many weeks at city hall with, for all intents and purposes, predominantly Caucasian urbanites arguing with mostly ethnic, South Asian farmers over the size of houses on farmland.

Hot on its heels was another lengthy, heated, public debate, this time with, for the most part, Richmondites of Asian ethnicity going head-to-head with Caucasian counterparts over how much English there is/could/should be on business signs across the city.

Can you imagine the look on barman Mo’s face if that had all happened before I went to Mexico and he had to listen to my story?

Yes, these subjects are important to everyone who’s immersed in them; but the point is, it’s not a great look for Richmond.

We need to figure out a way to address these “cultural” issues, and fast, or people will get the wrong impression of the city, whether it be a barman in Bucerias or one of the thousands of tourists visiting Richmond.

Until then, I’ll just take a copy of the Richmond News on my return to Yoyo Mo’s.

It’ll be much less painful, for all concerned.

It’s not what you know – or is it?

Last month, reasons for judgement were released for Re Strom (Estate). In this case, an Executrix applied for a B.C. Supreme Court Order that a claim (for variation of the deceased’s Will) by an adult child be dismissed, because the child had waited too long to launch his claim.

The deceased had two children, with two different women. He died in 2010. His Estate was left to his second son and his sister. The Executrix was the mother of his second son, but was not aware of the first child, who had been estranged. The first child had been disinherited.

The grant of Probate was given in August 2011, and the second son sought a variation of the Will and resolved the claim in 2013, receiving 80 percent of the Estate (the deceased’s sister received the remaining 20 percent). The second child later developed kidney problems, and died in 2014.

Meanwhile, the first son did not know who his “real” father was until he was 16. He tried to find his father, but could not before the father died. He did find other relatives, through Facebook, including (in 2012) the sister of the deceased. They had occasional communication over the years, and met in 2014. The son tried to continue communicating, but the sister did not want further contact. The son then applied to vary the Will, and the sister tried to have his application dismissed.

The Court refused to dismiss the son’s application, holding that the son did not receive adequate or proper communication from the sister (Executrix), and so his action was reasonable and not out of time. The first son will now proceed with his claim, and we shall see how it is resolved in the coming months.

how “success” is defined. Wealth over a relatively short duration of time may not be realistic.

Like most occupations, the reasons behind why we do what we do factors in.

Farming is a tough life, but complaining about it speaks volumes. Farmers don’t all choose the profession to get rich and many seek a simple, clean lifestyle and modest income. I know, because my uncle was one of them.

It’s all about keeping it in perspective and setting realistic goals and expectations.

If this farmer arrived on the scene expecting a substantial annual income without a lot of hard work, it likely was disappointing when it didn’t readily convert as such.

In fairness, we should establish what a successful farm in Richmond looks like, using the farms of the past (as well as present) in looking toward the future. We needn’t give up on small farms because some aren’t able to achieve their version of success.

Farming offers the opportunity to live and work on the land, to engage in hard, physical work that has payoffs in overall health quality and sustainability. You may even work hard enough to make the farm the bread and butter for the family. But it won’t be served on a silver platter out by the pool.

That’s where the confusion about farming is coming into play lately.

Dear Editor: Re: “Down to earth talk about ‘real farming,’” Letters, June 2.

An unsuccessful farmer of a small nursery seems to be claiming all small plot farming as guaranteed failures.

However, his lack of success could be attributed to his own actions, and isn’t indicative of a broken system.

Richmond’s been a relatively successful farm community for decades. If some are now questioning the viability of it all, perhaps they’ve had misconceptions and are expecting more out of the lifestyle than it has to offer.

One farmer’s personal experience involving a handful of years’ effort without a “substantial” (his word) annual income is just that. If he was looking for a windfall, he may have set himself up for disappointment with false expectations And this is part of the problem as some people view farms as a get-rich quick scheme. The solution is then presented as a “need” to get rid of the farm in order to really prosper from it; a backwards approach.

We shouldn’t only consider those who’ve failed to make it work, but also those who one day may find success in farming. It may not be for everyone, however we shouldn’t do away with farms due to some short-term failures.

There are many examples of successful, smaller scale farms, but it depends on

Parking curbside Councillor, keep Take heart, there up with the News are helpful souls in a ‘war zone’

Dear Editor, Re: “Residents angered over parking spaces,” Letters, June 7 and “Go talk to your strata,” Letters, June 9.

Residents of 3088 Francis Rd., beware of a hypocritical vigilante movement that’s being mounted!

Nearly two years ago, before certain homeowners on 3100 Francis Rd. moved to this area, our neighbourhood was peaceful and friendly.

Now, it’s becoming sort of a civic war zone regarding the parking issue.

Coincidentally, soon after they settled here, unsigned notes began to appear on cars parked in front of their houses threatening ticketing and towing. Now, these vigilantes have fallen to taking licence plate numbers of cars parked, and calling police to issue tickets when their watches show them overtime parking.

How very sad that they spend their days in such a way. They punish others, but abuse the system themselves.

The comments about gardeners and guests and repairmen coming and not finding parking is laughable. I walk by regularly several times a day, and I vouch there has been ample parking available for months and years, the whole block practically empty Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This area is indeed heavily visited on weekends. But this is city property, and not someone’s third parking space. Stating that any car other than yours parked on the road in front of your house is a “nuisance,” as Ms. Lau did in her letter, is very hostile. Regular parking is allowed here and there will be cars parked, no matter whom they belong to, be it visitors, dyke-walkers and dog-walkers, or townhouse-owners.

It should be available to everyone, equally.

I wonder how Ms. Lau and Mr. Dennison would feel if the city installs parking meters as the ultimate opportunity to offer parking equalityto all.

Tax hike alarming

Dear Editor, I was very surprised to receive a 10.5 per cent increase in our property taxes.

I look around Richmond and see 20, new highrises in the centre of the city. I also see a dozen cranes constructing more buildings. As I travel around the residential and farming areas, I see dozens of new multi-million dollar homes and many more under construction.

Surely, I thought, the tax collector would be receiving a river of new tax dollars that he/she would be hardpressed to spend. Apparently, not so.

The ever-expanding wish list at city hall is fully capable of dealing with new and old tax revenue, and then some.

The information that came with my tax bill was of little help in showing the increases in spending.

As a fiscal conservative, I am very troubled by the rate of my tax increase. Is there any local elected person looking at tax increases? If so, please tell me to help me mark my ballot.

ne of the staples of Canada Day in Steveston will likely be conspicuous by its absence this year.

The very popular beer garden at the Buck and Ear pub will be missing after management were advised by the City of Richmond they wouldn’t be getting a temporary permit for the occasion.

After an approach was made by the Buck and Ear about hosting a beer garden on Canada Day — as the pub has done for many years — the city’s business licensing department then, as is normal, canvassed the RCMP and fire-rescue for their input.

The feedback, according to the city, was that there had been issues in the past, including public intoxication and assaults.

And based on that information, city staff informed the Buck and Ear that staff would “not be supporting an application if it came forward.”

To date, added the city, there has been no formal application.

The Joseph Richard Group, which took over ownership of the Steveston pub in May 2015, issued a statement in response to a request for comment

by the Richmond News.

“The Joseph Richard Group and the Buck and Ear have always taken great pride in being an integral part of Richmond’s Canada Day festivities,” said the company’s CEO, Ryan Moreno.

“It being our nation’s 150th birthday, we look forward to continuing this tradition on July 1. Our hope is that the city will reconsider its decision as our establishments are known for offering a safe environment to celebrate any occasion and while we have operated the property, we have never had a safety issue or liquor law violation at

the Buck and Ear.” Across the Lower Mainland, the company operates 10 “public house” bar and restaurants, a handful of liquor stores, three commercial properties and a Downtown Vancouver nightclub.

During his regular briefing to Richmond city council’s community safety committee on Tuesday, Richmond RCMP’s officer in charge, Supt. Will Ng, told councillors how there would be “no beer garden” at the Buck and Ear during this year’s Salmon Festival due to a “number of incidents.”

Richmond man confessed to his brother that he had stabbed their younger brother multiple times in a “mad rage,” according to a taped phone call that was played in court last week.

The confession was made by Douglas Cameron Orr, who has pleaded not guilty to the November 2014 seconddegree murder of Robert Brown Orr, 59, of Vancouver.

The Crown’s theory is that the accused confronted his brother in the lobby of the victim’s Kerrisdale apartment and stabbed him to death due to long-standing resentment and anger over a decades-old stock market transaction.

In court Friday, Jim Orr, testified that on Nov. 20, 2014, a week after the slaying, he got a phone call from the accused, who had been arrested and was in prison.

Jim Orr told the judge that at the time of the call, which Douglas would have been advised was being recorded, he had had little contact with Douglas for nearly 10 years.

Asked by Jim what happened, Douglas told him he was outside the Balsam Street apartment building and went inside and pushed Robert in an “absolute rage” and admits he has “almost no defence.”

“It sounds like you’re trying to come up with a defence,” says Jim. “No, no, I’m not trying to come up with a defence, Jim. There’s no defence, Jim,” said Douglas.

“But how many times did you stab him,” said Jim. “Multiple times,” said Douglas. “I was, uh, it was a mad rage, mad mad rage. I’m not, I’m not trying to justify it …”

A

Richmond residence was one of six properties raided across the Lower Mainland by a special police unit as part of a massive probe into illegal gaming houses.

After an extensive, year-long investigation into money laundering, with ties to organized crime, nine people have now been arrested, with more expected to come.

A spokesperson for the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of BC (CFSEUBC), which carried out the raids, was unable to give specific information with regard to the homes’ locations or the locale of those arrested, as the investigation was still ive.

But the Richmond News understands that at least one of the properties in question was searched Monday night by officers executing a warrant.

A search of six residences resulted in the seizure of large amounts of cash and bank drafts, drug paraphernalia, suitcases, cell phones, computers and other related material.

Also seized were a number of luxury vehicles, including one with a sophisticated hidden compartment.

The investigation by the CFSEU-BC — whose joint illegal gaming investigation team (JIGIT) includes investigators from the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch — led to the arrest of a network believed to be connected to illegal gaming houses and money laundering.

In May of 2016, the investigation determined that a criminal organization allegedly operating illegal gaming houses was also facilitating money laundering for drug traffickers, loan sharking, and conducting kidnappings and extortions within the hierarchy of this organized crime group, which has links nationally and internationally, including mainland China.

The investigation also revealed several schemes related to the collection and transferring of large amounts of money within and for the criminal organization.

During the probe, say police, it was apparent that there were multiple roles filled by different people which enabled or facilitated the organization in laundering large amounts of money through casinos.

“Top tier organized crime is not easy to tackle and requires a coordinated approach to achieve results,” said assistant commissioner Kevin Hackett, of the CFSEU-BC.

“Each illustration is a work of art that has been photographed and then, working with book designers, made into a book,” said Mumford of Radiant Child.

Mumford said to be a good picture book (or graphic novel), the principle part of the story is told through pictures.

“It’s not where the pictures are supporting the text; it’s where the pictures in themselves can tell the story on their own,” she said.

Judging is incredibly complicated and based on formulas. But it boils down to a basic tenet.

“We always wonder what it’s like for a person to go through the journey of the book. Because it’s all experience; it’s an artistic experience to go through it.

“We want to choose something that someone will look at over and over and over again. That’s a Caldecott winner.”

Mumford said picture books are especially important at Anderson, for kindergarten kids and new immigrant students.

“The wonderful thing about a picture book is you’ll see someone who doesn’t have print literacy yet and they will examine the book. And that is a very powerful thing.”

“At that point I decided I wanted to do that. It became a life goal,” said Mumford.

Mumford explained that in today’s publishing world that is increasingly dominated by digital mediums, the Caldecott continues to hold significant clout, much like the Pulitzer Prize.

“If your book wins this award, you’re set for life.

This award holds so much prestige and esteem. When you win, your book is put in libraries all around the world and it will be translated into many different languages.

So many books go out of print these days; these books don’t go out of print if they’ve won the Caldecott award,” she said.

The committee is a twoyear affair in order to select one annual winner.

“When you sign on to the committee you have to be willing to dig, dig, dig,” she said.

Books are heaped on her and she is tasked to nominate seven.

“They are labours of love and deep creative works,” explained Mumford.

Nothing simplified for Chinese in sign debate GRAEMEWOOD

hen Ken Tin Lok Wong recently perused Richmond streets for a place to work out, he came across a new fitness centre near the Richmond Olympic Oval advertising in simplified Chinese.

Consider it a tipping point for Wong to contact the Richmond News to discuss a wrinkle in the great, infamous foreign language sign debate not often observed in non-Chinese speaking circles.

“The concern is traditional Chinese is being marginalized in the sense that the People’s Republic of China, their regime, believes that they are the authentic Chinese culture,” explained Wong.

While municipal records show the sign debate was put on the hot plate in the late 1990s — following an influx of Hong Kongese, such as Wong, 36 — it has come to a raging boil over the past five years with a new wave of Chinese immigrants — this time from Mainland China.

“We’re very much two different communities. Three different communities if you count Taiwan,” explained Wong.

The issue, noted Wong, not only shows divisiveness between Chinese and non-Chinese, but also from within the Chinese community.

To a non-Chinese speaker, Chinese signage — from business storefront ads to real estate pamphlets and service vans displaying little to no information in English — may appear

the same. But it is not, noted Wong. And the takeover of simplified Chinese, invented and used in Beijing-controlled China, has roots in Chinese politics and culture, which are reverberating throughout Richmond.

Wong said he’s concerned the new wave of immigrants are not integrating as well as the Hong Kong diaspora did. And while he recalls the “monster home” debates of the early 1990s, this time around he sees Mainland Chinese immigrants having a much higher community profile, particularly in real estate, and seemingly ubiquitous simplified Chinese signage is a symptom of this.

“With foreign language signs, it is definitely a display of belonging. We’re here and we want to make our voice heard,” at the peril of other cultures and Canadian values, said Wong.

“Turning a blind eye and not catering to those who don’t speak the language, I think, is just a passive way to deal with (and avoid) potential assimilation,” said Wong.

“I don’t want to single out people from the PRC. But there’s a different mentality,” he added.

Part of that may be because newer Chinese immigrants are much wealthier than older ones. As an immigration consultant, Wong has witnessed the impact of investor immigrants, who can effectively buy Canadian citizenship for an interest-free loan to the government. Furthermore, many people are choosing to remain permanent residents as opposed to becoming Canadian. And the choice to travel between Canada and China for business reasons remains a popular one.

“They are not assimilated as easily,” said Wong, who has observed the back-andforth debate at city council as to whether a bylaw should mandate English on signs.

A

s horrific as the news was earlier this week, regarding the mistreatment of chickens in Chilliwack by chicken catchers, it was only one step further than the torture endured by the thousands of battery cage chickens who produce eggs for sale in your favourite grocery store.

Most eggs come from chickens hatched from mass-produced, inseminated eggs — chicks who never had a mother to teach them Chickenese.

Most of the mis-named farm fresh eggs are laid by chickens who never see the light of day and never peck at a bug or feel the sun or wind in their feathers. Quite often their beaks are painfully cut so they won’t attack and injure their cell mates out of sheer frustration.

All the 18-month-lives of egg-producing battery chickens are spent cooped up together in stacked rows of small wire cages, with three or four to a cage big enough for one bird.

They can never spread their wings.

To balance they must curl their toes around wire which is slightly slanted so their eggs roll down for easy gathering, and open so their excrement falls through and can be collected for fertilizer.

People who have bought battery hens when their laying life is over have said their feet can’t straighten out, they are permanently curled.

Humans who raise and profit from these maltreated forms of God-given life call them-

selves farmers, so when farm-fresh eggs are advertised it is usually promoting the product of a year and a half of chicken hell.

It is possible to verify this description of egg-laying life, by searching Google for the definition of “Battery Chickens,” but I have personally witnessed the horror.

During sexing of the newborns, the tiny, defenceless male chicks are tossed aside in a pile to suffocate and die. No eggs? No profit.

Why is this practice allowed to continue?

Because we, the shopping public, don’t want to pay a dollar or two more for free range or free run eggs, both of which are becoming more accurately described, and available in grocery stores.

Free run eggs are laid by chickens allowed to run free inside a barn-like structure. They are crowded, but can at least walk around to partially to do their chicken things. Free range hens are provided with coops for the night, but are happily free to roam outside.

Of course it’s more expensive for farmers to allow their flocks a more or less normal life. But the eggs from free run or free range birds have yellower yolks and taste like eggs.

They may cost more in money but not in conscience.

A recent survey discovered that British Columbians are more concerned with the maltreatment of the animals and birds we eat than residents of other provinces.

Change for the better has been promised, but until that change, thousands upon thousands of innocent creatures will continue to suffer.

Union wants higher base for all at YVR

ipe Wong, 64, is an HMSHost employee who has worked in the food service business at the airport for 21 years. She makes $16.50 per hour and maintains another parttime job, regularly working about 55 hours each week, to pay the bills.

According to Wong, a story such as hers is common, if not the norm, at Vancouver International Airport (YVR), where many of the employees who work for contractors are subject to low wages and precarious employment.

It’s something Wong and her union, UNITE HERE Local 40, want to change. As such, they have made YVR a local battleground for minimum wage reform — a debate swirling both in B.C. and, more recently, Ontario.

“It’s very expensive to live here. I’ve seen for 21 years how expensive it is to live in Richmond,” said Wong, a longtime Richmondite who immigrated here from Fiji.

“I’m exhausted all the time because I have to work two jobs. If I could have one job with a decent wage I could contribute to society; do some volunteering; do something else in Richmond. I can’t do that because I’m running from one job to another to pay the bills. Frankly, I don’t have a life, I just have to work. For the majority of my co-workers, that’s their life,” she said.

Admittedly, she notes her working conditions are not as bad as others. She is unionized and has benefits, after all.

Wong is also concerned about the estimated thousands of employees who work at YVR with undocumented overtime, no breaks and have to worry about job retention.

“Their situation is worse than ours,” said Wong.

The union is asking the Vancouver Airport

Authority (VAA) to voluntarily institute a mandatory minimum wage for all contracted employees at the airport.

Such a move is not without precedence.

At San Francisco International Airport (SFO), living wages and benefits beyond the state-sanctioned minimum wage, were introduced in 2013. Then, John Martin, SFO airport director, wrote a letter published in the New York Times, noting the program’s success.

“Airport safety is not well served when exhausted employees have to work two jobs just to make ends meet,” said Martin.

The airport has seen more wage increases since then (to $13.50 for catering employees).

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SeaTac) introduced a $15 mandatory minimum wage and what has been described and reported as fair labour standards, in 2015.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles International Airport has a base wage of $11.27 for employees with benefits, or $16.18 for those without them. Additionally, there are worker retention policies in place.

Wong said worker retention policies are important because the airport authority frequently changes contractors, and in the process people lose their jobs and labour standards are weakened in a race to offer the airport the cheapest services and products.

Her union’s request is not presently being considered by the authority.

“We are not currently considering implementing a mandatory wage level for our service contractors. It is to everyone’s benefit to have YVR service providers supported by stable and engaged workforces. Many of the businesses that operate on Sea Island have unionized employees and we respect the right of the unions and employers to determine their wage rates,” said Michele Mawhinney, VAA’s vice president, Human Resources and Supply Management, via email to the News.

As to the U.S. airports doing the opposite, an airport spokesperson stated that American airports have a different governance model, allowing them to mandate wage rates, whereas VAA is a private not-for-profit organization.

“The provincial government is the body responsible for setting the minimum wage rates in British Columbia,” stated the spokesperson.

However, going above and beyond provincial guidelines, the City of Vancouver became a “living wage” employer this month by reportedly requiring most contractors to pay employees at least $20.64. The City of Richmond, notably, is mulling such a policy, after city council was presented with the idea by anti-poverty groups this year.

Meanwhile, a BC NDP government has pledged to increase the minimum hourly wage to $15 by 2019, which would fall in line with similar plans in Alberta and Ontario.

The move is controversial amongst certain policy makers and the business community.

Locally, the Richmond Chamber of Commerce said it is concerned about the closure of independent businesses, which it claims would be hard-pressed to pay more in wages for entry-level jobs.

“Provincially, the B.C. Chamber of Commerce network supports wage increases that are tied to the consumer price index, for which businesses can dependably budget,” noted Rob Akimow, chair of the

Richmond Chamber of Commerce.

“Richmond’s business community, and our membership, is composed primarily of small and medium businesses. The people behind these businesses are the engine of our local economy. They are community builders and job creators. Our chamber strongly encourages any government looking to make significant changes to the minimum wage to consider the negative impacts on those business owners,” added Akimow.

But the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) states “claims that increases in the minimum wage will generate huge efficiency costs for the economy and mass unemployment are not credible.”

Notably, alarm bells from the Fraser Institute that there would be job losses when B.C. increased its minimum wage from $8 to $10.25 in 2011 became unfounded.

The other element of increasing wages is one that tugs at human decency, according to Wong.

CCPA notes a higher minimum wage, closer to a living wage, reduces inequality and creates more stable jobs.

Wong said her company profits enough to pay its employees more.

Furthermore VAA is always touting its numerous awards (including the authority itself being a top-100 employer in B.C.).

“They expand and buy more art and put it all over the place. I think it would be good for them if they do something for the people,” said Wong.

Refusing pregnant pause for passion Ballet-dancing mom-of-4 one of the stars of annual gala show at Gateway ALANCAMPBELL

W

hen she signed up for summer ballet classes, Adriana De Gros was hoping to squeeze in at least four of the eight sessions she’d signed up for.

As it happens, De Gros, a 31-year-old mom-of-three at the time, managed to extract seven of the pre-pointe classes.

The eighth? Well, on the evening after the seventh session, the mom-of-three became a mom-of-four.

“Edith (her newborn) was two weeks late,” De Gross, now 33, told the Richmond News.

“Three hours after the seventh class, I went into labour.

So, I missed the eighth class, obviously. But two weeks later, I was back in class, ‘wearing the baby’ on my chest.

“But it became a bit disruptive, with the baby crying; so a friend helped out with babysitting Edith out in the hallway for the 90-minute classes. I have a babysitter at home now when I go to class.”

Suffice to say, De Gross, who lives in a co-op in Terra Nova, is a little obsessed with ballet.

And, as she and fellow members of the Richmond Dance Company rehearsed intensely for their part in this Sunday’s one and only performance of “Canada’s 150th with Anne” – a spin-off from the Canadian classic “Anne of Green Gables” – De Gros revealed her entire brood, including 21-month-old Edith, are equally entranced by the fine art.

“Lucia, my oldest daughter, started at age two; she’s now nine,” explained De Gros.

“Shyloh, my son, started at three; he’s now eight. Audrey started at three; she’s now five and is really obsessed with ballet.

“Lucia brought (Edith) downstairs the other day with a ‘fountain’ hairdo and has her dressed in tights and a black bodysuit. All Edith kept saying was ‘ballet, ballet, ballet.’”

hinking back to discovering she was pregnant with her fourth child, De Gros spoke of how she was deep in the throws of realizing her passion for ballet, which she only took up four years ago due to her eldest’s involvement.

“I was in such shock (about being pregnant), I didn’t even tell my husband until I started throwing up,” she said.

“I had three kids before, but I couldn’t believe this one was happening. I was finally doing something different (ballet) and was kind of discovering myself. From age 23 to 31, I had been a mom.

“I didn’t tell the ballet instructor (Miyouki Jego) until I was 12 weeks (pregnant). I thought I should tell her for

safety reasons.

“But she started jumping up and down with excitement, saying this was great and that it would be great for me. I thought she was going to tell me to stop.”

De Gros didn’t tell anyone else in the class until it was obvious, at about four months, she added.

“I was actually seven months pregnant in June of 2015 when I played an active role in a show at the Gateway Theatre. It went absolutely fine and I continued with technical classes afterwards.”

Her recovery time after the birth was brief and her “easy labour felt like nothing. Two weeks later, it was September and a new term of ballet classes had begun.

“I have a long personal history of anxiety and depression and ballet has been the one thing that has made the most difference in combating symptoms,” De Gros said, when asked to explain her self-confessed obsession with ballet.

“To my surprise, it has been incredibly theraputic. Ballet has rounded out my life as a stay-at-home mother of four

and enabled me to gain self-confidence and physical fitness.

“I have trained out all the sciatic, pelvic and hip problems my previous pregnancies had left me with; I have built true, core strength like never before and, most importantly, I’ve found spiritual and emotional centering through the structure and discipline of ballet.

“Ballet is so much more than just a class. It is so much more than just dancing. It is life!”

n this Sunday’s, annual, gala-style show at the Gateway Theatre, the performances will come from advanced-level dancers across Richmond Arts Centre’s dance program, including the Richmond Youth Dance Company, Richmond Adult Company, Company Apprentices and PreCompany classes, all led by Miyouki Jego, head instructor and choreographer.

As for De Gros, she’s playing the role of Gilbert Blythe, a male, who, she says, is a “terrible boy that Anne of Green Gables has a problem with, but she ends up marrying.”

And to make the occasion even more special for De Gros is the fact that this Sunday will be the first time she and her nine-year-old daughter, Lucia, will be performing together.

“She is super excited, as you can imagine,” she said.

“It all started with (Lucia) doing ballet. I always wanted to do it when I was a child, but I was a tomboy. So this (male) character is my childhood dream.”

his Sunday’s gala performance is preceded by recitals by the rest of the school-year dance program students, with “Happy Birthday Canada!” at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., including beginner and intermediate level dancers in ballet, jazz, musical theatre and tap.

'Elvis' to play Steveston

E

lvis may have “left the building” a long time ago, but his music still lives on through a number of tribute artists. And one of best in the business, Vancouver’s Steve Elliott, is coming to the Beatmerchant Record Store in Steveston Village next Wednesday evening (June21) for a free performance.

Elliott won the 2004 top Canadian tribute title at Penticton’s annual Elvis festival and in 2010 performed at Empire Field in Vancouver in front of a crowd of more than 25,000 at a special, BC Lions half time show.

In Steveston, he will perform his Elvis Elite tribute outdoors starting at 6 p.m. at the Beatmerchant (160 - 12240 Second Ave.) and will later pose for photos with his pink Cadillac for fans.

anada’s very first McDonald’s, on No. 3 Road near Granville Ave., will be the place for a big, 50th anniversary celebration for the iconic hamburger chain when it re-opens the restaurant next Wednesday (June 21) following a complete re-development of the site.

According to company officials, the original golden arches that presided over the site since 1967 will be back in place in time for McDonald’s to host an event for media at 11 a.m. on the day.

No word yet when customers will be invited to tour the revamped location.

But indications are the event will honour its long history in the community by celebrating some of its most iconic moments over the past five decades.

“Being a part of the original McDonald’s Canada location is very special,” said Joe Guzzo, McDonald’s Richmond franchisee. “We now have the chance to continue on this rich history at this location by modernizing the restaurant and the experience for our guests. We look forward to welcoming the City of Richmond and all community members back to the restaurant to check out our new look and feel.”

F

rance, Germany, Portugal and now Mexico and Chile. Ian Ryder is seeing the world as one of Canada’s top up-and-coming judokas.

The 16-year-old confirmed his national level status by capturing his U90 kg weight class in the U18 competition at the recent Canadian Open Judo Championships in Calgary. He also aged up to finish third at the U21 level.

Ryder continues to build off his 2016 performance at Nationals which saw him win a pair of medals, including gold at U16.

That earned him an invitation to a summer camp at the National Team Training Centre in Montreal where he first got a taste of where his promising career was headed beyond the familiar walls of the Steveston Judo Club.

Last fall, Ryder’s training shifted to Burnaby where he now works with one-time French national team member Jérémy Le Bris — Judo B.C’s Sport Development Director and Provincial Coach. It was Le Bris who arranged for Ryder’s international debut at a competition in France last December where he won bronze.

That set the stage for being in Canadian team colours for the first time at a tournament in Germany over spring break.

Ryder placed fifth — earning him the G-standard as a national level athlete. That status paves the way for him to compete for Canada at the Pan Am Junior and Cadet

“I haven’t been on the international circuit for that long but once I start going to more and more tournaments, I will get a better idea who I will be fighting,” said Ryder. “It’s still pretty new to me and it will take a little bit of time to get use to, but it is really a great experience. I’m looking forward to getting to travel for Canada.”

He is grateful for everything his home club has done for him — from a development to financial standpoint.

The long list of supporters includes Steveston Judo Club’s Head Coach Kane Morishita, Club President Al Sakai, Head Instructor Ron Kuramoto, Senior Sensei Rep Jim Kojima and longtime member Martin Kuramoto.

“There are a lot of other sensei and people behind the scenes helping me and funding as well. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them,” continued Ryder.

Even with his busy training and competition schedule, the Grade 10 McMath Secondary student still finds the time to continue his lacrosse career.

The one-time provincial team player will continue to suit up for Richmond’s Midget team until he leaves for Cancun.

Ryder will also be joining his national teammates for a training camp in Montreal in late July, prior to the World Cadets.

Richmond talent attends Team China camp Dillon Maher, Jarod Yau, Sam Huo and Leo Li were among a number of players invited to a Chinese Ice Hockey Federation prospects camp held last weekend at Burnaby 8 Rinks.

The three sessions were run by former Vancouver Canuck Cliff Ronning and his son Ty Ronning who plays for the Vancouver Giants.

Maher, Yau, Huo and Li, all 16, are former players with Richmond Minor and Seafair hockey associations.

Observing from the stands was longtime NHL coach Mike Keenan and his assistants. He now guides the Beijing-based Kunlun Red Star of the KHL and has been hired to oversee the development of the Chinese men’s and women’s national teams. China has amped up its national program since being awarded the 2022 Winter Olympic Games where it

Earlier this year, Richmond’s Julius Zhang had a leading role in China capturing gold at the U18 Division 3A World Junior Hockey Championships in Chinese Taipei.

He flew to an initial tryout camp in Beijing last December then returned for a two-week main camp in February prior to heading to the world tourney.
