ast weekend I attended the screening of a short film by a pair of Vancouver filmmakers about a “gender fluid” child.

Frankly, I’d never heard the expression “gender fluid” before. It’s not hard to guess what it means, but just to be clear, it refers to an individual who is fluid in terms of their gender identification — they may present as male one day and female the next. Or, perhaps neither gender feels right, hence the expression “non-binary” gender identification, where an individual chooses not to be bound by either of the two gender types.

One of the two filmmakers describes themselves as such. On the night of the screening, they were wore a classic “little black dress,” three-inch heels and blood-red lipstick, but their voice spoke to a male anatomy. They explained that, until a few years ago they identified as a gay man, and only recently came to realize there was more to it.

Okay, you might have noticed it — all the theys and theirs.

The issue of pronouns can get a bit tricky, but said filmmaker noted many trans and gender fluid folks prefer to use the “they singular” pronoun — confusing, yes, but what isn’t. More about language in a minute.

The star of the film is also gender fluid.

Assigned male at birth, this seven year old skipped around the lobby of the Chan Centre, prior to the opening, wearing a flouncy purple skirt, patent shoes and a feather boa.

I wanted to attend this event primarily to bring with me a gay Richmond teen who I know struggles, not so much with gender identity, but with a sense of belonging. This girl is smart, strong and out — self-identifying as a lesbian. But while she knows who she is, she’s not exactly surrounded by examples of her reality or her people. I’m not sure, but I would guess we have a lot fewer “out” teens in Richmond than in Vancouver. And it’s not because of something in the water, it’s because of something in the language.

Richmond trustees (Sandra Nixon the exception) argue it isn’t necessary to specify trans gender bullying as the school district has a zero tolerance for bullying of any kind.

Yet, it does specify factors such as race and religion, via the Human Rights Code. Vancouver and other school districts have implemented gender-specific policies, for good reason. It acknowledges those individuals and their reality. The worst thing we can do to any group or individual is to render them invisible by failing to name them. And this is no oversight. It’s done deliberately out of fear that if children are exposed to the full range of gender and sexual identities, they may choose one we don’t like — and, indeed, they may. But to deny anyone something as fundamental as their own gender or sexual identity, is a recipe for pain and self loathing, and is the ultimate in bullying.

Biologist: Loo fails history Dear Editor, Re: “Pipeline policies for success,” City Scene ad, June 1.

I found this City of Richmond column by Coun. Alexa Loo to misrepresent many of the issues related to the complexity of supplying fuel to YVR. The present unacceptable proposal to getting jet fuel to YVR has been caused by the proponent, VAFFC. In 1989 they were refused a permit by the federal government to transport jet fuel into the Fraser River after a comprehensive review including four days of public hearings. Of course Ms. Loo will not recall of what happened in 1989.

Until Ms. Loo was elected, all Richmond councillors had unanimously opposed jet fuel tankers and a terminal in the heart of the Fraser River estuary. The council decision supports the vast majority of Metro Vancouver citizens who also oppose this threat to the Fraser River and its aquatic life and our safety. When Ms. Loo’s comments are under the Richmond City crest in a taxpayer-paid ad, why would the City and taxpayer allow such an ad, since it does

not represent the majority view of our community and council?

Ms. Loo seems to live in denial and lacks concern for public safety, protection of property and the giant salmon runs and wildlife populations in the estuary that would be harmed by any jet fuel spill. The airline consortium’s environmental assessment clearly indicated that we could expect some spills into the river.

Ms. Loo and VAFFC have conveniently ignored what could be a win-win alternative — a pipeline from the BP refinery at Cherry Point directly to YVR. That refinery now supplies at least 60 per cent of YVR’s fuel and is only 70km away. That same large refinery, that gets oil from Alberta, supplies fuel by pipeline to Seattle’s SeaTac and Portland’s airports some 150 and 350 km away.

by Air Canada and Westjet and some 30 other YVR airlines, is short sighted. Being worried about more paper work to undo a terrible provincial and Port of Vancouver environmental as-

sessment is irresponsible. The courts have just ruled that the federal and provincial governments should do their own proper assessments. Also just four months ago Madame Justice Dillon in BC Supreme Court admonished VAFFC in that they could have done much more to consult with the public on this jet fuel project.

One should remember that some 40 years ago Richmond City Council approved apartments on Garry Point. Due to their inappropriate consultations, the public took the City to court and the court ruled that the approval was invalid and after further council review and paper work, Council reversed their position and turned Garry Point into a public park that many now enjoy. In addition to being a terrible student of environmental stewardship, Ms. Loo also appears to be a poor student of history.

City is failing cyclists Dear Editor, Re: “Brush with bus bruises cyclist’s pedal power,” News, June 3 It is fortunate that cyclist Stanley Hsu received only minor injuries when cut off by a bus on Garden City between Bridgeport and Sea Island Way the other day. The area is very dangerous for cyclists.

Vancouver and Richmond cyclists are lucky to have the Canada Line bridge, built with financial assistance of the federal, provincial governments and YVR as a way of getting from one city to the other.

On the other side of the bridge, Vancouver has three safe bike lanes on Heather, Cambie and

Ontario Streets that allow cyclists to travel from the bridge further into the city. In Richmond, there are none.

It has been more than six years that the Canada Line Bridge has been operational and cyclists still have to risk the unsafe condition of the bike lane on Garden City/ Great Canadian Way disappearing at one of the busiest intersections in the city. The same is true at No. 3 Road. It is time for our city to emulate Vancouver and make the passage from the bridge to the city safe for cyclists.

Don't be a ciggy-butt brain Dear Editor, Re: “Richmond teenagers storming ahead,” News, June 1.

I have just been to Alaska on a cruise and saw the article in my local paper. The people of Alaska are way ahead of us as in all the places we called at. I noticed that on most of the lamp posts there was a cigarette butt box. It hung just above waist level, was not that big and had four holes to put your butts into. Below was a sign that said in big letters that if you are

seen dropping a butt you will be fined $500 each time!

What an invention and so easy to use. As these places, such as Ketchikan where during the summer cruise season they have 18 large ships a week with 48,146 passengers, they have a huge problem and seem now to be working on the reduction of butts. Can these Palmer students look into this?

In a recent U.S. case, Retha Floyd v. Nationstar Mortgage LLC, a 95-year-old woman had taken a reverse mortgage, a type of mortgage for elderly homeowners that requires no monthly payments.

The woman was foreclosed, because she had gotten behind in her house insurance and tax obligations.

The woman’s Counsel, appointed by the AARP (American Association of Retired Persons), also discovered that “extra” payments were appearing in her monthly statements. For example, several monthly inspections were done, each one being charged but unnecessary. Counsel helped the woman negotiate a repayment plan, and she was able to retain her home (in which she had lived for more than 50 years).

I advise anyone to be extremely careful in determining whether a reverse mortgage is appropriate.

If an owner needs only a modest amount of cash, or even a larger amount, a loan or line of credit might be wise also.

Pit-bull owner claims 'mauling' was accidental ALANCAMPBELL Staff Reporter

he woman in charge of a pit-bull terrier who police say mauled the face of a visitor to her home, is claiming the incident was a “total accident.”

Vefa Nejad said her 15-month-old dog, called Hugo, was only trying to bite the strap on the 54-year-old female victim’s handbag.

Nejad — who was looking after the dog, which is owned by her 20-year-old son — said the woman, identified only as Sophie, was visiting Sunday with her daughter at the single-family home on Dennis Crescent and was bending down to pet Hugo when he lunged at the strap and apparently “nipped” her face by accident.

Even though Nejad told the Richmond News that she and her son were warned two months ago by the City of Richmond after Hugo bit their landlord, she said the dog is a “very friendly puppy, who just doesn’t know his strength.”

And she claimed that the victim — who required emergency facial surgery — and her daughter have already called the city to explain that the incident was an accident and are pleading not to have Hugo put down.

“My friend’s mother was insistent that I let Hugo off the leash, she just kept asking and asking, saying it would be alright,” a distraught Nejad told the News on Wednesday.

“So I let Hugo off the leash, but I didn’t want to. He was just sitting there when the mother bent down to pet him.

“She had a handbag around her body and when she bent down, the strap of the bag went across her face. Hugo jumped up to bite the strap and nipped her face by accident. It was a total accident.”

Nejad said both the victim and her friend started screaming and that “Hugo was scared. He didn’t know what was going on; these people were freaking out.

“I was able to get Hugo into his kennel and then the ambulance came for the mother.”

It was then that Richmond Mounties arrived at the scene, near Steveston Highway and No. 4 Road, on Sunday evening.

According to police, the officers were unable to enter the home until the owner confined the dog to a kennel and muzzled it.

The dog was apparently at a “heightened state of aggression with boisterous barking and wild movements heard through the door to the residence,” police said. It had been communicated to the officers that the victim had already left the home and was en route to hospital.

However, Nejad claims her dog was already in the kennel when the police arrived.

“The police officer that came in kept saying how quiet he was,” she added.

Shortly after the incident, police followed up with the victim at Richmond Hospital and were told that the 65-kilogram, male pit-bull became unexpectedly aggressive towards

The dog was apprehended by a city bylaw officer, pending an investigation. It’s now being held in isolation at the Richmond Animal Protection Society’s shelter on No. 5 Road.

In terms of the biting incident with her landlord two months ago, Nejad said the family received a warning and were told that he must be muzzled and on a leash at all times.

She added that there are strangers coming in and out of the rented basement suite

below her and that “Hugo gets a bit disttressed.”

Nejad said, since the incident, a city bylaw oofficer has been to her door twice, asking her tto sign a document permitting Hugo to be eeuthanized.

“But we want to fight for him. He’s just a puppy,” she said.

City spokesperson Ted Townsend said he ccouldn’t comment on the specifics of the ccase, as it was still under investigation.

“Given the circumstances, we will do an aassessment that addresses the need to provvide for public safety, while also considering tthe animal’s welfare,” added Townsend.

“Once the investigation is complete, we w would seek to reach a voluntary agreement w with the owner on our recommended acttions.”

If the city and the dog owner can’t agree on the action to be taken, the city would then consider legal action, Townsend explained.

The owner, thought by area residents to be the maid of an empty home, will have to build a reinforced enclosure for the German Shepherd to prevent it from escaping the property.

The mauling left the mailman with serious lacerations to his legs.

petition against planned school closures is circulating Richmond’s school district and organizer Kim Nowitsky says she’s already amassed 800 signatures from three elementary schools.

There is concern, she said, that only 10 schools have contacted her since distributing the petition nearly two weeks ago.

The activist mom wants all schools to get involved.

“I think the parents of schools not on the (closure) list think that the closures won’t affect them. But they’re going to have to absorb other students and that means their facilities will be taxed. There will be less gym time and special rooms will be used up,” noted Nowitsky.

Notably, in some closure scenarios, the school district has proposed portables at schools not on the list of closures.

The petition ends June 17 and Nowitsky is asking PAC members at all schools to sign it. She said parents can contact the PAC liaisons at their respective school.

The petition opposes the Ministry of Education’s apparent order of closing schools to increase utilization rates (to 95 per cent) to receive funding for seismic and facility upgrades.

But, the Ministry told the Richmond News there is no such order that the district must meet 95 per cent capacity for seismic upgrades. That target is only specific to facility upgrades, such as new schools and expansions. However, the Ministry said it will consider capacity for seismic upgrades on a case by case basis.

A rally at Steveston MLA John Yap’s office is scheduled for Saturday, June 18 where the petition (also in Chinese) can be signed. A large crowd is expected, said Nowitsky.

wo bodies have been found in or near the Fraser River in Richmond in the space of 24 hours.

Shortly after 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Richmond Mounties were called after a report of a body seen floating in the south arm of the Fraser River, near the Massey Tunnel.

According to police, the body was recovered with the help of Canadian Coast Guard rescue specialists and their hovercraft, the CCGS Penac.

Police say the body was found in a sleeping bag at the foot of Bentley Street, which, from Richmond, can only be accessed by the Arthur Laing Bridge and then turning left off Marine Drive.

Crews with the Forensic Identification Unit and Major Crime Section were dispatched to the scene.

Investigators say they are unable to confirm any details about the case until an autopsy is completed.

he City of Richmond is requesting nearly $3 million from the federal government as part of the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program Fund, which aims to celebrate the country’s 150th anniversary in 2017.

The city has identified 10 projects that meet the funding criteria priorities, namely that they be recreational facilities, and are energy efficient. As well, the projects must be aimed at renovation or expansion of existing infrastructure, be community-oriented, non-commercial in nature and open to the public.

Up to 50 per cent of total costs or a maximum of $500,000 per project may be granted by the federal government, as it has earmarked $46 million for Western Canada for projects to be completed by March 2018.

For example, the city is asking money for two projects at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

One is a sports field upgrade at the front of the Oval. The city is seeking to install an artificial turf for uses such as soccer and field hockey. The other project is to improve the indoor track. The city wants to glue the track down to the concrete floor for better stability.

If the city doesn’t get money for any particular project, it doesn’t mean it won’t be completed. In fact, all of the projects have funding approvals from the city in 2015 or 2016.

The city is also seeking money to repair Steveston Pool. According to a staff report late last month, the pool will take 8-10 weeks to fix, temporarily. The pool’s fibreglass lining

has failed and will cost $450,000 to fix.

FLASHBACKFriday Memories rekindled as Olympic fire approaches Rio ‘I knew I stood there on behalf of so many people,’ remembers one Richmond torchbearer MATTHOEKSTRA Contributor

undreds of people have carried it this year, most while jogging. But some have surfed, cycled, rappelled, swam and even paraskied with the Olympic flame — now one month into its 95-day journey in Brazil, leading up to the 2016 Rio Games.

Six years ago the flame was here in Richmond. It arrived Feb. 9, 2010, days before the Winter Olympic Games, travelling on Lulu Island’s flat terrain with the aid of 70 torchbearers. Like Rio, most jogged. But Richmond’s final torchbearer carried the flame by wheelchair.

During a two-hour torch relay community celebration in Minoru Park, Rick Hansen, known as the Man in Motion for his worldwide fundraising tour for spinal cord research, made a grand entrance. With the Olympic torch fixed to his chair, Hansen wheeled past RCMP officers wearing traditional Red Serge uniforms. He paused to wave, to give high-fives, before making his way onstage to light the cauldron.

“It was an incredible feeling of pride and honour to be selected as a final torchbearer and to carry the flame through my hometown,” Rick Hansen told the Richmond News in an e-mail. “Seeing our community, the City of Richmond and all Canadians, come together with a sense of inclusivity and shared values was an incredibly special experience and not one I will ever forget.”

The flame travelled 21 kilometres through Richmond, joined in the journey by a convoy of support and security vehicles. The

Richmond leg began at No. 5 Road and Steveston Highway. It travelled past community centres, each hosting small neighbourhood celebrations, before arriving at Aberdeen Station. The flame then travelled

by Canada Line to Richmond-Brighouse Station, close to where Hansen would receive it.

“To me, the Olympic and Paralympic torch is symbolic of the values of the Games,” said Hansen, a Paralympian and advocate for people with disabilities.

“Sport can be a unifying factor — it represents respect, courage, success, failure, struggle, perseverance, resilience, excellence and making a difference.”

Three days later, on Feb. 12, the flame entered B.C. Place during the Opening Ceremony of the 2010 Games.

Other locals who served as torchbearers in Richmond included the late Mary Gazetas, Olive Bassett, Jim Kojima, Bob Mukai, Shirley Olafsson, Jacqueline Roy, Al Sakai, Walter Wu, Novell Thomas, Jimmy van Ostrand and Bill Jaffe.

Jaffe carried the flame just a few blocks from his house. What he remembers most is the anticipation—the “absolute thrill” of waiting on the road for the flame to arrive.

“It was so surreal and wonderful at the same time. Truly a unique and fantastic experience and I knew I stood there on behalf of so many people — my family, my

friends, my co-workers, my Rotary Club, the Richmond Hospital Foundation and the community.”

Before his run, Jaffe and fellow torchbearers listened to an hour of instructions so they’d know exactly what to do — and what to expect — when it was their turn to carry a flame first lit in Olympia, Greece, birthplace of the ancient Olympics.

“There is a lot to absorb but most of it is common sense,” said Jaffe. “I got the hand-off perfectly and I ran at a slow pace, and that was all fine and good. When I lit the next runner’s torch I knew my time was done. But the next runner just stood there and stared at me. I had to remind her to

An estimated crowd of 30,000 gathered at Minoru Park — known as the O Zone celebration site during the Olympics — to watch Hansen light the cauldron. Then came the fireworks and the singing of O Canada. Organizers believed the crowd was the largest in the torch’s journey across Canada to that point.

Looking out at the enthusiastic crowd, Hansen said: “This flame is for each and every one of you. Never give up on your dreams.”

The Rio 2016 Olympic Torch Relay continues until the Summer Games begin on Aug. 5.

Warren McKinnon has been dramatizing some of his Sunday sermons to better teach and entertain his congregation since becoming the reverend at the Cambie Road church three years ago.

For the last four weeks, 13 people ranging from children to seniors, have been taking the Dramatic Discoveries Workshop at the church, lead by the Gateway Theatre, to improve their performing arts skills.

“I’ve always had an interest in theatre and religion from the get go,” McKinnon said, explaining he studied theology in Montreal and did doctoral work in visual arts, in Toronto.

Sermons based on the biblical themes of those stories are given to his congregation over two or three Sundays, before volunteers from the congregation act them out. In the past year, he has presented six plays, including Les Miserables, A Christmas Carol and The Deserted Mine.

“We do plays in the context of a worship service,” McKinnon said.

“Many of the plays have music adapted to the stories as well.”

Wanting to bring up the performance quality of his performers, McKinnon secured financial support from the ProVision Fund of the B.C. Conference and the United Church Foundation, and then approached the Gateway Theatre.

Gateway’s education manager Ruth McIntosh said the theatre had never been approached by a church to put on a performing arts workshop before, however she liked what McKinnon was trying to do and the four-week workshop was born.

“What harkened me to Warren’s request was that he was in pursuit of creating a better theatrical experience for his audience,” McIntosh said, adding one of Gateway’s mandates is theatre education.

“It is to benefit the community,” noted McIntosh.

McIntosh brought actor and instructor Raugi Yu to lead four, two-hour, Monday evening classes. Yu taught participants the basics, such as performance skills and

how to interact with one another on stage.

“The progress they made has been great,” Yu said. “They really got into it.”

During the third workshop, Yu asked the group about their progress and what, if anything, has changed for them. One participant said that she started to enjoy who she saw in the mirror more.

“She developed confidence,” Yu added.

For many of the participants, participating in the plays and workshop not only built confidence, it helped them become comfortable with speaking in public, in a language that is not native to them.

“I get to practice my English,” said Helina Huang, who took the workshop with her 17-year-old daughter, Cassie Zhang.

“I’m a little shy but this made me more confident.”

For Mina Xue, 13, performing for the public was a whole new experience.

“I didn’t participate in any drama lessons in school,” said Xue, who took the workshop with her mother, Shelly Xiao.

“This was my first time doing this.”

Now that the workshop is over, McKinnon is hoping to secure funding again so he can offer another workshop in the future. In the meantime, he looks forward to seeing performances of a higher calibre in future plays.

“We needed professionals to help bring us up from being amateurs,” McKinnon said. “I think these workshops have done it.”

he Richmond Lions Club Sockeye Run Car Show and Shine is back for another year and it’s shedding some carbon emissions on Sunday.

The 26th annual outdoor event in Steveston will show visitors a blast from the past and give them a ride into the future.

All the usual classic cars, carefully crafted to perfection by their owners, will be on hand. Also on show will be a set of electric vehicles.

“The car show will feature

both the roar of the hot rod and the whisper of the electric vehicle . . . There will be electric vehicles on display from BMW, Chevrolet, Nissan, Ford, Kia, Mitsubishi, Tesla and Electra Meccanica,” noted John Roston, of Plug-in Richmond, a community group of electric vehicle owners and advocates.

But if you’re more into things that purr, then don’t miss out on the famous 1960s Miss British Columbia drag boat, once the fastest in the world, having reached speeds of 322 km/h.

Show organizer Doug Harder said there will be a little bit of everything for car enthusiasts. A White Spot concession, rock and roll music and family entertainment activities, such as model car building and Hot Wheels racing (12 p.m.), will keep everyone busy and moving.

The show is in Steveston Park, on Moncton Street, next to Steveston Community Centre. The show opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 4 p.m.

Awards will be handed out at 2:45 p.m. Donations to Lions Club charities accepted.

Hunt mysterious gnomes at Nature Park

“Legend has it these creatures are guardians of the bog,” stated the City of Richmond in a news release.

But there is a twist. The city noted no

gnomes have been sighted, to date.

“While no gnomes have actually been sighted, there are signs of their activity everywhere.”

berdeen Centre is calling on Richmondites to come forward and help build three of London, England’s most iconic public landmarks out of Pez candy bricks and boost its bid to get into the Guinness Book of World Records at the same time.

Volunteers can sign up on the centre’s website to fill slots to help artist Dio Wong, who the centre has flown in from Hong Kong to build the London Eye and London Bridge out of Pez candies and construct Big Ben out of the famous Pez candy dispensers.

The London Eye and London Bridge structures will be for display purposes at the centre’s atrium, while Big Ben will be the one that Wong and the centre are aiming at the world record, which centre spokesperson Joey Kwan has been told stands at just under seven-feet tall.

“We would really love people to come out and help us bid for the record,” said Kwan.

“We’ve spent about a year and a half in talks with the Guinness Book people to get them to come out, so we need all the help we can get to make this happen.

“I’m told that if we get to seven feet, they will consider taking a look at it, so that’s what we’re aiming for.”

Kwan said the Guinness Book people are scheduled to come out to Richmond on June 30, so the centre has another three weeks or so to deliver.

s part of my week long pilgrimage to the Okanagan, a favourite stop is Stoneboat Vineyards in Oliver. Lanny and Julie Martiniuk have been working the vineyards on the rocky soil since 1979, at first for other wineries, and finally in 2005 they began producing their own wine.

It wasn’t an easy way to eke out a living. Besides early frosts killing the vines, the home site was so full of stones that normal fence posts couldn’t be pounded into the soil. And it was laborious removing the stones, which required a tractorpulled sled nicknamed the Stoneboat.

When it came to naming the winery, they decided on Stoneboat, a fitting tribute to their land and to the effort required to farm it. The subtitle for the winery is a “Pinot House” because they focus on high-quality Pinot wines.

My go-to white is the Stoneboat Pinot Gris ($18.90). Their 2015 release is bursting with pineapple and apricot and balanced by the crisp acidity and minerality from the gravel bar vineyards.

Something new at Stoneboat is the limited release 2015 Alessio ($21.90).

This white is named after their longtime Italian friend and is an old-vines Pinot Blanc. It too has tropical fruits plus green apple, and the Stoneboat trademark of crispness and minerals.

Switching to reds, their 2013 Pinot Noir ($24.90) has a Burgundian style to it which I love. The nose has the old world scent of red fruit along with the a hint of funky barnyard and the soil. True to form, this Pinot has a velvety texture along with the fruity flavours, plus truffle.

Stoneboat is one a few Okanagan wineries that produce the South African Pinotage which is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault. If you like Pinot Noir, I am sure you will be fond of Pinotage which is slightly more rustic than the more refined Pinot Noir.

Stoneboat has recently changed their labeling and the Pinotage is now called Rock Opera ($24.90) . The colour is a dark ruby and it has aromas of dark fruit splashing around in the glass. It is more full bodied than the Pinot Noir with

here is one Extreme Weather Shelter in Richmond. Why do I mention this now that our weather has turned to flowers, sunshine (well, some days) and sandals?

Because, here at Chimo we’re busy making plans for winter. This is when the shelter becomes activated again.

Richmond’s Extreme Weather Shelter is activated (opened) when the weather becomes very cold (around freezing or below) or when there are extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain or wind. The shelter provides temporary emergency shelter spaces when extreme weather conditions threaten the health and safety of homeless individuals. Overall, it is a time-limited, weather responsive, temporary shelter in communities such as Richmond, that don’t have sufficient shelter bed capacity during extreme weather conditions.

Recently, while speaking to a Richmond RCMP officer, he told me that this past winter he came across a homeless person, in a wheelchair, tucked in next to a building trying to keep warm. The officer inquired why this person wasn’t in a shelter and the reply was, “Because it’s too warm out.”

The officer then told me that it was very cold out — he himself was dressed in a heavy jacket and couldn’t imagine trying to sleep overnight in that cold. That’s when I

told him that Extreme Weather Shelters are typically activated when temperatures reach near or below zero.

Richmond’s Extreme Weather Shelter consists of a large room where people sleep on the floor. When the shelter is activated, due to bad weather conditions, several volunteers jump into action. Pads and bedding are laid out on the floor, potatoes are peeled, food is cooked, and a sheet is hung on one area of the large room so that women are provided a sense of privacy.

The shelter can accommodate 16-20 people. Anything over that amount and we have to direct people to other shelters in nearby cities. Some choose to go and some choose to sleep outside. When asked why they choose to sleep outside, we have received various answers.

This past winter we offered to provide bus passes to a man in a wheelchair so he could get to a shelter in North Vancouver that had space for him — but he declined and chose to sleep outside. The thought of traveling by bus in his wheelchair, with his other health conditions, all the way to North Van, late at night in the cold and rain, was just too much for him.

Even when there is room in a shelter, people may choose to sleep outside rather than in the shelter. Sometimes this is because of paranoia of large groups. Or it’s because shelters sometimes can be considered See Expect page 23

Sometimes it’s because you don’t like how people treat you in a shelter. Sometimes it’s because you’re trying to find a job or have just found a job and the shelter hours aren’t flexible enough to accommodate this. Sometimes you have a dog and they’re not allowed in the shelter.

And sometimes you just can’t stand the noise from all the coughing.

So, instead, you choose to battle the weather and sleep on the streets.

There’s a difference between a full-time shelter and an extreme weather shelter. One

is open to clients every day and the extreme weather shelter is open only during bad weather.

In Richmond, we have a full-time men’s shelter that is wonderfully and expertly operated by the Salvation Army. And when the weather turns bad, the Extreme Weather Shelter, located at St. Albans Church, and operated by Chimo, is activated, adding extra available beds for those who choose to come in from the cold. However, Richmond has no women’s shelter (though Salvation Army is currently working to rectify that with the support from Chimo).

With the increasing problems of unavailable affordable housing in Richmond, we anticipate seeing a rise in the numbers of people seeking access to shelters — women and men. And we anticipate an increase in the numbers of people choosing to live on the streets rather than standing in line and accessing available shelter beds.

This can and will result in higher costs to us all as police, hospitals and social services get involved. But I just wonder if people needing shelter would change their minds about sleeping outside if, instead of mats on the floor, we offered small, single rooms with locks; rooms that came with few rules and regulations. Perhaps this would be what was needed to encourage people to finally come off the streets — for good.

P

inky out, tip china cup about 45 degrees towards your mouth and gently sip your organic, summer berry-infused tea.

There, that was easy.

Fifteen minutes into my first ever afternoon tea experience and I was nailing it like a veteran chai-quaffer, straight off the set of Downton Abbey.

Among the eclectic and rather quaint surroundings of the Venus Sofia vegetarian tearoom, curiously located in the heart of Victoria’s Chinatown, I had chosen to sacrifice my afternoon tea virginity with the aforementioned summer berry, as it boasted on the menu as having “uplifting energy” qualities.

And with another “T” just two hours on the horizon — at the Westin Bear Mountain Golf Resort — I needed all the lifting up I could get, especially after another monster, buffet breakfast at our Marriott Inner Harbour hotel.

To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect of the afternoon tea. After all, it had been more than 25 years since, as a teenage waiter, I allegedly served afternoon tea to sweet old ladies in a hotel in my native Scotland. I say allegedly, as it was a pair of sad, cucumber and watercress sandwiches and a scone, if they were lucky.

Thankfully, the service and fare on offer at Venus Sofia was a smidgen more sophisticated than the circa 1988 Scottish version.

Although, as fine as the china cups were and as detailed to attention as the menu was, there was something very homely about this tearoom; more akin to your old grandma’s dining room, with charm and time-aged charisma sprinkled liberally around the furniture and walls (you may notice the fixtures are deliberately mismatched).

And when the decadent, three-tiered cake tower made its appearance – complete with home-made, vanilla and lavender scones with home-made devon cream, home-made mascarpone sandwiches, home-made shortbread and dainty little delicious cakes, home-made…I think you get it – I was in afternoon tea heaven.

According to Venus’ website, Swisstrained chef and co-owner Alain Alaily takes his inspiration from his SwissItalian/Egyptian roots and his “lovingly handcrafted meals are prepared with professional expertise and love.” I have no quarrel with that assertion.

The menu changes seasonally and everything is made to order, except for the baked goods, which are prepared daily.

f you drive 25 minutes out of Downtown Victoria, you’ll find yourself parking up at one of Vancouver Island’s top golf resorts — Westin Bear Mountain.

Perched, as the name suggests, atop Bear Mountain, the resort commands spectacular views across Victoria, the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Mountain Range.

There are two Jack Nicklaus’ designed courses — the more challenging Mountain Course, which boasts the aforementioned vistas and the Valley Course, which is still easy on the eye, as it sweeps up and down and from side to side among lush, forest greenscape.

The facilities are among the best in the country and it’s no coincidence that the Team Canada of golf bases its training camp at the resort.

Since my son, Ben, is only 13 and still finding his feet on a golf course, we played the Valley Course, 5,583 off the whites.

And from the moment you arrive, it’s clear the folks at Bear Mountain value your patronage — your bags are taken off you and married with your cart and your clubs are cleaned after the 18th — which is good to see, given how many courses are struggling to fill tee-times these days.

valley and climbs uphill to the green, Ben not only put myself to shame by parring the hole, he also humbled one of the club pros as well as Bear Mountain’s director of golf Jordan Ray, who were tagging along for nine holes.

The Valley Course’s rolling hills, sometimes steep terrain, and giant rocks, were complemented by some well-placed water hazards and brooks, which kept us on our toes for yardage off the tees.

A neat, little tool, however, especially if you’ve never played the course before,

was a touch-screen GPS map of every hole on your golfcart, just where your sunshade in your car would be.

And while the Mountain Course is said to be the tougher of the two, the signature of the Valley is its greens — lightning fast on average and with tons of hidden breaks. If you’re not careful, you’ll find yourself with a ten-foot putt for a bogey, after having a six-footer for a par.

Pedal power leads to castles, totem poles n Where to stay: The Marriott Inner Harbour on Humboldt Street, directly behind the harbour-front Empress, is no more than a fiveiron (180 yards on a good day) away from most attractions or services.

And, because it’s not actually on the waterfront, it’s a little more reasonably priced.

As mentioned previously, the Marriott’s buffet breakfast was to die for and the staff were super friendly and professional.

Also, if you have a dog, like we do, they only charge one fee per stay and are very welcoming in the lobby to your pooch.

Uphill ever so slightly, away from the city centre, had us meandering through Victoria’s arts and theatre district and then towards the stately Craigdarroch Castle and Government House.

The views across the city were incredible atop Moss Rock, before we coasted downhill through the back streets of residential Victoria – about two hours after starting – to Beacon Hill Park and the world’s tallest, free-standing totem pole.

he year was l970. The event was the annual Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal. I happened to be the pro bono chairperson of the event that year, so it fell on my shoulders to make it all happen. The grounds of the then Vancouver Courthouse were secured.

The respected and usually staid CBC Television News anchor, Lloyd Robertson, delivered the 6 p.m. national news wearing a Salvation Army Hat and suggested that his viewers go to the show...

Jack Webster (a well-known Scottish news personality whom many of you will remember with a smile), Sweeney from Sweeney Cooperage on Granville Island advertized (From logs to Barrels. Now defunct), Gordon Wismer, (twice Attorney General of B.C. l93741 and 1946-52), Grace McCarthy (well-know lady of many hats) and other dignitaries were “one, two, three, kicking in a snaky Congo line, much to the amusement of crowd.

The grounds were packed. The Salvation Army is a very popular organization and most people I contacted were delighted to become involved. I’m sure I’m forgetting lots of important people and happenings but, after all, it was 46 years ago.

So, being that long ago, there must have been something very impressive for me to recall the evening. And there sure was!

Duke Ellington, some would argue, invented jazz. His orchestra was the first Big Band Sound to jump on the jazz bandwagon and it brought Duke fame and fortune. Among his honours were receiving a life-time achievement Grammy award and receiving 16 honorary doctorates. He was presented with, not one, but two, gold medals from reigning presidents. He wrote songs such as Mood Indigo, Sophisticated Lady, Don’t get Around Much Anymore and hundreds more songs many of which are still played today.

n business, branding is everything.

A lot of thought goes into a company’s choice of name, trademark and slogan, and that slogan — the catchy way that it expresses its values, vision and purpose — influences how the organization is seen by its employees and customers.

Well-chosen slogans are sticky. We automatically associate them with the brand. Nike: Just do it. Kentucky Fried Chicken: Finger lickin’ good. Coke: It’s the real thing.

Those sticky ideas get into our heads — sometimes through creative commercials and advertising campaigns; often through shear repetition. They can have greater impact when spoken by charismatic or influential personalities.

Over time, we just accept them as part of our daily landscape, soundscape and mindscape. We eventually stop questioning their validity.

Therein lies the danger of slogans. We quickly adopt them as habits of thought. They shape our beliefs and influence how we see the world.

As children, memorable phrases can help us learn important rules and good behaviour. “I” before “e” except after “c.” Look both ways before you cross the street. Use your eyes and use your ears, before you use your feet. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. . .

Through the power of habit, what we repeatedly think becomes our inclination. The connections between specific neurons are reinforced over time and like a welltravelled path become engrained.

This is fine when those habitual thoughts are true and useful. Unfortunately, we all carry personal slogans adopted from the past. They may have been said first by influential people, like parents or teachers, or you may have come up with them through past experiences. They are reinforced by self-talk: what we say to ourselves that shapes our opinions, feelings and actions.

Negative self-slogans that are never totally true and don’t help anyone include: “I’ll never be happy.” “I can’t control myself.” “I’m a loser.” “I can’t win.” “I’m not good enough.” “There’s something wrong with me.” “Those people are different.”

Negative self-slogans can limit your thoughts, narrow your perspective, shape your emotions and keep you from trying.

What are your limiting beliefs about yourself and others? In what ways are you heeding the slogans of past advertising campaigns of companies long out of business? Some of the things we bring forward from the past no longer apply or may never have been true. If you need help identifying negative self-talk, do what businesses do.

Put together a small focus group of your best friends. Ask them what negative phrases you regularly use.

Try out some new slogans. Here are some of mine. “Be an agent of positive change.” “We were made to move.

When we don’t, our health suffers; when we do, we thrive.” “Of the things within your control, the best predictors of your future health are the habits you practice today.” “Help yourself to happiness by helping others.”

“Give more than you get.”

he Murano made its debut back in 2003. It was Nissan’s first midsize, five passenger crossover in North America, and it stood out for its unique look and great design.

While the second generation Murano was more evolutionary, Nissan unveiled a breakthrough design for the third generation model, starting a design renaissance.

In its lineup, the Murano is Nissan’s halo crossover. But, unlike the typical halo car which serves a small niche and sells in low numbers, Nissan hopes the Murano will hit high volume numbers and reinforces the new style.

Design When Nissan went to the drawing board for the Murano, it faced the challenge of designing something fresh, but lived up the precedent set by the head-turning original. This third generation certainly brings attention and will appeal to customers looking for a unique SUV that stands out.

Nissan managed to make the Murano more dramatic than before with bodylines that are flowing, yet also more rugged. Nissan’s now signature V-Motion grille sets the tone for the whole overall design.

Along the sides, the sculpted rocker panels, highlyarched character lines, and sloping roof lead to blacked-out D-pillars. The “floating roof” look is popular right now, and this treatment works well on the Murano.

The current Murano is marginally longer and wider than before. Despite its growth, Nissan managed to shed a few pounds.

Performance With all the changes applied to the Murano’s exterior, under the hood Nissan returned to a tried and tested package.

Powering the Murano is a VQ35 3.5-litre V6 that is available in several vehicles across Nissan’s range, as well as the previous Murano. In this application, it produces 260 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque, which is adequate for most occasions.

Mated to the engine is Nissan’s Xtronic continuously variable automatic transmission. CVTs are sometimes not appreciated by the driver (people feel strange when there is no shifting feel), but this one features D-Step Logic which creates the feel of a conventional stepped automatic.

The base Murano S is only available as front-wheel drive.

However, if you want or need all-wheel drive, it is an option on SV models and standard on SL and Platinum trim levels.

Handling in the Murano can be described as predictable and steady.

Environment Obviously, the exterior steals the majority of the attention, but Nissan also spent a lot of time redesigning the Murano’s interior.

Nissan designers focused on a few key areas; the first being the level of quality and comfort. As a result, the Murano’s cabin is very inviting and upscale.

With no sharp edges in sight, and big sweeping curves, the Murano provides a relaxing, gentle feel all around.

Nissan’s marketing department now refers to the rear seat as the “social lounge,” and if you opt for the expansive panoramic sunroof, it’s easy to see why.

Cargo space in the Murano is acceptable, if not great.

Nissan also focused on technology but wanted to ensure that the high tech items are easy to use and safe to navigate while driving. The standard 7-inch customizable display or the optional 8-inch touchscreen.

he results are in! The epic, first ever (at the Richmond News), fitness-challenge-of-thecentury drew to a close Monday.

After 10 weeks of trash talk, dirty tricks, and an enmity rivaling Batman and Superman, the dueling duo is ready to be friends again.

Did Collin “Après Ski” Neal falter? Did Rob “Mongoose” Akimow get that miracle he hoped for? Will the two salesmen be shopping for new pants together? No, on all counts; although that last one is yet to be determined.

Starting out at a generous 177.7 pounds, Neal’s final weight was a slim 159.2 pounds, declaring him the winner of a dinner at Hy’s Steakhouse — bought by his opponent.

“I’m going to order an expensive steak and a Scotch,” said the integrated media consultant. “It feels really good to have completed the challenge. Now I need new pants.”

Going from 168.4 to 159.8 pounds, Team Mongoose’s achievements are nothing to sniff at either. And surprisingly, Akimow’s defeat has only made him want to spend more time at the City Centre Community Centre, bucking his initial hatred for gyms, as he’s signed up for 10 more weeks with trainer A.J. Aguasin.

“I like gyms now,” said the director of advertising. “You feel so much better afterwards.”

While Akimow realizes he could have started out stronger at the beginning of the challenge, Neal attributes his win to his personal trainer, Gabrielle Payne.

“She was great, we had a really good personality fit,” said Neal. “Every workout was different so she kept it fun and interesting.

I was motivated to impress her. It was great timing to do the challenge too, because I was ready for it. I was in it 100 per cent.”

But both men had their fair share of challenges as well. A notorious snacker, particularly late at night, Neal found the chips and chocolate bars the hardest habit to kick.

“I had a lot of people holding me accountable,” Neal said. “I still go out, I haven’t changed my life, but I just have one beer now, instead of four, or five…or six.”

Akimow’s newfound love affair with the gym hit a rough patch when he tried two new gyms while on vacation in Kelowna and Mexico.

“I really didn’t realize how thrown for a loop I’d be in a new gym. The City Centre is like my home, I didn’t like being away from it.”

Each opponent walked away with some useful tools under their slightly tighter belts.

The biggest lesson learned for each side?

How much their diets affected workouts.

“Drinking and fitness definitely don’t mix,” said Akimow. “It vastly affects your perfor-

mance, even a little bit.”

But now is just the beginning — both men plan on continuing their new routines and lifestyles of balance and moderation.

“I’m really proud of Collin,” said Payne. “I’m inspired by him. He surpassed all his goals, it was really great to see.”

“Rob did really well,” said Aguasin. “He pulled through and made some long-lasting changes. I’m glad both him and Collin are taking their healthy lifestyles seriously, and are sticking with it.”

The once fierce competitors have made plans to hit the gym together every Wednesday. And who knows? Maybe that joint shopping spree is in the cards after all.

“Rob was a great competitor,” said Neal.

“I hope he keeps it up because he looks like a new man. It’s time the both of us got some new pants.”

“I’m proud of Collin, I’m glad he did what he did,” said Akimow. “And A.J.’s awesome.

I’m looking forward to what another 10 weeks will bring.”

A week in the life of me

N

ow that I am fully recovered from my last race and gearing up for Rio with some big training weeks, I thought I would share what a heavy week of training is like for me.

Last week, I had one of my best training weeks ever, with 205 kilometres from Monday to Saturday.

This is what that week looked like: Monday was a 15-km fartlek where I did 1-km hard, followed by 500 metres easy for 10 repetitions.

Finishing in just over 62 minutes, this was the fastest Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d ever done this session. With a 3-km warm

up and a 2-km cool down, it was a 20-km morning, in total, followed by a solid 48-minute, 10-km walk in the evening.

Tuesday was just easy walking with a 76-minute, 15-km walk in the morning, a gym session at the Richmond Olympic Oval in the afternoon and a 59-minute, 12-km in the evening, around coaching with the Richmond Kajaks.

Wednesday was a moderate 40-km in the morning in 3:16 minutes and a harder 10-km in the evening in 46 minutes for 50 kms on the day.

Thursday was my easy day with just a 77 minutes and 15 kms and a physio session with my therapist in North Van.

Friday is typically our fast day and to add a little more distance I walked the 6-km around Minoru. Following that, I did 14 kms with three minutes of rest averaging four minutes per kilometre and then jogged five kms home as I was completely knackered.

Friday evening was an easy eight kilometre walk in 40 minutes.

Saturday was another 40 kms, this time a little quicker, getting through in just over three hours plus a hard 10 km walk in the evening in 44 minutes.

Sunday was a recovery day with some time well spent in the pool swimming.

From page 29 So in a nutshell, that is how I spent my week. It looks a lot easier written down!

In total, I burned over 12,000 calories in over 16 hours of activity this week.

What is lost here is all the stuff I have to do in between training sessions to ensure I can bounce back for the next one.

One big thing is making sure I’m getting food in me ASAP after a training session with a nice mix of carbs and protein.

Another big one is stretching and foam rolling to keep myself from getting injured

and getting through training sessions with good technique.

Moving forward, I’ll have a few more weeks like this before Rio, combined with some easier weeks to consolidate the hard work and prevent overtraining.

t was an 18th birthday Diego San Pedro will never forget.

The Grade 12 Steveston-London Secondary student spent his big day dialled in at the B.C. AAA Secondary Schools Golf Championships in Ledgeview.

Playing the renowned Ledgeview Golf Course — home to current PGA Tour regulars Adam Hadwin and Nick Taylor — San Pedro shot a sizzling 7-under 63 on Tuesday.

He backed it up with a solid 67 Wednesday to take individual medalist honours by four shots over AJ Ewart.

San Pedro’s first round included a blistering 9-hole stretch that he played in 6-under. He also hit all 18 greens in regulation. He had not played Ledgeview prior to Monday’s practice round.

“It’s not a long course but you have to be accurate off the tee and good on the greens,” said San Pedro. “I felt really good with my driver and putter.

“My first birdie didn’t come until the fifth hole but I knew I was playing well and just had to be patient.

Funny enough, I missed a birdie putt on 18 for a 62 but I guess shooting 7-under on June 7 was meant to be.”

San Pedro took a three shot lead over Ewart into Wednesday’s final round and admitted he felt nervous, knowing the position he was in after ninth and fourth place finishes respectively the last two

years.

“I just wanted to go in with the same game plan,” he continued.

“That’s where you can get into trouble when you start playing cautiously.”

The putts weren’t falling at the same rate as a day earlier and, at one point, Ewart had pulled within a shot of him. That’s when San Pedro elevated his game and finished with a flourish with birdies on the par 3 17th and the par-5 18th.

Remarkably, he finished the championships with just one bogey in 36 holes.

“I just love the back nine and the last three holes really suit my eye,” he added. “I heard he was within one shot of me and it was ‘game on’ at that point.

“It’s just an awesome way to end my high school golf career.”

San Pedro’s spectacular performance also helped the Sharks finish third overall in the team standings — five spots better than a year ago. The team also includes Grade 11s Nicholas Miu, Toby Lau and Grade 10s — Top Lau and Parker Shaw. Miu finished tied for 11th with rounds of 72-78.

Earlier, Steveston-London captured their fourth consecutive Richmond championship.

McMath’s Rogers shatters hammer throw record at provinvcials M

cMath’s Camryn Rogers proved to be one of the stars at last weekend’s B.C. Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships in Nanaimo.

The Grade 11 student and Richmond Kajaks member shattered the meet record in the hammer throw with a toss of 55.15 metres — eclipsing the 13-year-old mark (55.09) set by Seaquam Secondary’s Catrina

Chisholm.

Rogers also captured the senior girls shotput event with a throw of 13.3 metres — becoming just the third athlete in 45 years to get over the 13-metre barrier since the meet record (13.92) was established back in 1971.

and Field Championships in Poland. She works with Kajaks head and throws coach Garrett Collier.

Rogers wasn’t the only Richmond athlete to reach the provincial podium at the senior level. Steveston-London’s Valerie Wideski finished second in the girls discus event with a toss of 39.84 metres. Wideski was also fourth in the shot put(11.32 metres).

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Don. He left us surrounded by his daughters Renata and Bronwyn. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, the sport bike motorcycle community, neighbours and colleagues. We extend a special thanks to the staff of the BMT unit at VGH and his close circle of friends who supported him during his care.

SCHOLTEN, (nee Elward), Gerritje (Gerrie) June 23, 1930 to June 4, 2016

Gerrie’s life story began in leeuwarden, Friesland in the netherlands. she was the eldest daughter in a family of ten who spent most of her formative years in the area of amsterdam, in the emerging shadow of the second World War. as a young woman she moved with her family to Djogjakarta, indonesia and there began her working life in this, then, Dutch tropical outpost. she soon met and fell in love with Herman scholten. they married, briefly returned to the netherlands, then immigrated to Canada in 1951. their travels took them by ship to Montreal and then by rail across Canada to summerland, BC where Gerrie and Herman’s first child, Yvonne, was born. they then moved to the rainforest of ocean Falls, BC where they lived for nine years, had three more daughters, irene, Yvette and Carla, and where they met many lifelong friends in the midst of this remote coastal BC boomtown. in 1961, their last move brought them to the then very rural richmond, BC, where Gerrie lived for 55 years.

Gerrie was a gentlewoman in every sense of the word. Dignified, caring, disciplined, generous, with a fun sense of humour. Gerrie inspired kindness and generosity of spirit in others. Gerrie’s lovely home and gardens, her classic sense of style and her delicious indonesian feasts celebrating life’s special occasions were all expressions of her creativity. Gerrie was a traveler. she was always ready to pack a bag at the drop of a hat and join others on a journey. she often returned to the netherlands to visit and travel with family and friends. there were memorable trips to Costa rica, Hawaii, Mexico, China, italy, ireland, england, France, Germany, Portugal, alaska, Mallorca, and a road trip across Canada. Gerrie passed on her sense of adventure to her children and in her later years when travel became difficult and one of her daughters was off to explore an unknown place Gerrie would ask ‘if she could fit in the suitcase?’

Gerrie’s passions included a love for all birds, especially owls, and a deep appreciation for music from the classical to Johnny Cash and leonard Cohen. Gerrie was the only member of her family who could carry a tune!

Gerrie was the beloved wife of Herman (predeceased 1982). she is the beloved mother (in law) to Yvonne (Harvey), irene (Joe), Yvette (Joe), Carla (ian). she is the beloved oma of Josh (1978-1995), Kylie, sam, Daniel, Marc, simone, aisha and Karl.

Gerrie will be greatly missed by her daily confidante and sister, Johanna (Joke), her sister-in-law and travelling companion, tineke, and her surviving brothers and sister, nick, rob, theo (where are you), and irma. Gerrie’s daughters Yvonne, irene, Yvette, and Carla thank their mom for their roots and their wings. they will cherish her memory and love her forever.

“Till the white rose blooms again” a celebration of Gerrie’s life will be held at a later date.
