ou may notice that today’s Richmond News is a fair bit heftier than usual — even without the advertising flyers.

That’s thanks to our “Best of Richmond” supplement, listing the results of a readers’ poll we ran, asking readers to tell us what they think are the best businesses in town.

The project got me thinking what I would consider Richmond’s best features. As I often use this space to tell all who will listen what’s wrong with this city, I figure here’s a chance to talk about what’s right.

Here’s my list of Richmond’s best features: 1) Geography: The fact we live on an island with the Fraser River pouring into the Strait of Georgia on either side; the fact one can walk north along the West Dyke (thank you city planners) to see the North Shore mountains, look west to watch the sun setting in the water or behind Vancouver Island (depending on the time of year); the fact we can do an about-face and see Mount Baker looming on the horizon. These are features of Richmond that inspire awe and wonder. They also inspire a powerful sense of protection of our environment, but as this is an all-things-good column, we’ll leave those nasty bits about pipelines, bridges and massive fuel tankers for another time.

2) My commute to work: I know this is a bizarre one for someone living in the Lower Mainland, but just yesterday morning, as I biked up the Railway Greenway, I marvelled at the rainbow of wild flowers lining my route.

Along Granville (especially heading west in March) I feel like I’m in a wedding procession with boughs laden with cherry blossoms hanging overhead. As I head north on Minoru Boulevard, I look to the Lions, Cypress and Grouse mountains. (In winter, when there is a fresh snowfall on the mountains, the view is simply breathtaking.) My commute is 25 minutes of easy, flat riding — just enough to get the blood flowing in the morning and the stress releasing in the evening. I ride yearround, rarely get soaked and honestly don’t know why more people don’t do it.

3) Low crime rate: I know crime happens and it’s devastating when it does. But, comparatively, this is a remarkably safe city.

4) Our community centres: I’ve waxed on about this before, but I have to mention such a fine example of why I like to pay taxes.

5) The people: I’ve lived in other places where folks are quicker with a smile and may be more connected, but I’ve still met some truly beautiful people here; friendly parents on the soccer pitch and caring neighbours who help out. Through this job, I’ve also met some gems, in person and on the pages of the paper. People who fight the good fight, support others and do their part to create a caring community. It’s these people who show us all the “Best of Richmond.”

The removal of the pickets would make this corner safer for vehicle traffic.

To improve pedestrian safety at this corner, install a demand light, similar to the ones on Chatham Street at First and Second Avenues.

Currently, pedestrians at Chatham Street and Fourth Avenue step off the curb into the roadway as far as the line of pickets so they can see and be seen past parked vehicles.

This dangerous practice could be eliminated with a proper demand light, which would keep pedestrians on the sidewalk until it was safe to cross.

As well as a pedestrian demand light, a four-way stop for vehicles at Chatham Street and Fourth Avenue would address the issues of both pedestrian safety and vehicle speed along Chatham Street.

I would also recommend an enforced 30 kph speed limit for the entire length of Chatham Street.

Will it take another tragic accident to convince the city to immediately address Chatham Street traffic problems?

Taking busses off this route is not the solution. Some rather simple safety measures, namely a 30 kph speed limit, a four-way traffic stop and a pedestrian demand light at Chatham Street and Fourth Avenue, would go a long way to improving safety for all.

Dear Editor, Re: “City seeks solution for bus loop fears,” News May 20.

The city suggested in a recent Richmond News article that the number and scheduling of transit busses and where they park along Chatham Street are the major traffic problems.

This is not entirely the case.

The traffic problems along Chatham Street are not exclusive to transit busses. The problem is, in fact, the speed a lot of drivers exhibit along the Chatham Street straightaway from No. 1 Road to Seventh Avenue.

Having lived at the corner of Chatham Street and Fourth Avenue since 1976, I have seen a significant increase in the number of cars, busses and commercial vehicles passing through this intersection at excessive speed.

At the Chatham Street and Fourth Avenue corner, the white pickets installed for the protection of pedestrians using the Chatham Street crosswalk are, in fact, part of the traffic problem.

I have seen large vehicles, everything from school and charter busses visiting the Gulf of Georgia Cannery site, to movie industry trucks and trailers, making very wide turns, putting themselves into the oncoming traffic lane, because they can’t negotiate the turn around these pickets.

A bridge too far and expensive Dear Editor, Re: “Six lanes and a train, get on it,” Letters, May 13 Great letter by Lynne Jones. The grandiose, 10lane “election year” Massey Bridge is overkill, far larger than currently necessary, too intrusive, too far-reaching and too expensive.

The planning for it has consumed years of study and caused a great deal of discontent and is still not a done deal.

Assuming, as reported, that the existing tunnel has not been condemned and that the Fraser River marine vessel clearance is not an issue for the Port Metro Vancouver, why not maintain the existing tunnel for a four-lane (three, plus HOV) southbound route, as all the roads and approaches are generally in place?

Then, construct a more economical narrower northbound, five-lane bridge immediately to the east of the tunnel to line up with the recently constructed four lanes of blacktop leading from the new South Fraser Perimeter Road.

The new bridge deck could have four, reasonably wide

lanes for vehicles, all northbound (three, plus HOV).

The fifth lane could be a smaller, separate barrier space for two-way pedestrians and bicycles located on the west side of the bridge deck.

The north end of the new bridge should include an upgrade to ease the congested section of Steveston Highway and have an overpass of Highway 99 integrated with a merge to the existing threelane freeway.

The new construction could be an H-type cable stayed or suspension style bridge with provision to facilitate a future five-lane, southbound deck below the initial northbound deck.

The initial construction should include all the support to enable the southbound deck to be installed without disrupting the northbound deck above.

The lower deck could be constructed when the Massey Tunnel is beyond its useful life, in say another 20 years, and as a separate project.

This will defer a significant amount of the proposed funding and will be a legacy for a future consideration.

tion should include a lower support base for a light rail train at the lower level, directly below the west side pedestrian/cycle path.

This will locate the LRT guideway between the north and southbound Highway 99 lanes and be an effective routing for security and safety near the grade level freeway.

The LRT could then proceed as soon as funding is approved without disruption to the initial bridge traffic flow.

This bridge solution would facilitate river crossing traffic alternatives in an emergency, by use of a counter-flow system.

Also, in a catastrophic earthquake event, alternatives would be immediately available to route all traffic by the bridge, assuming it would survive even if the tunnel failed.

The eventual separating of the north and southbound bridge decks would also be a vehicle safety attribute.

One would think that a phased, double stack, fivelane bridge would be more economical and less intrusive and would address the immediate traffic issues.

Clean up construction waste Dear Editor, A week ago, when I walked to Elmbridge Way near Gilbert Road, I saw piles of construction waste randomly put along the side of a pedestrian walkway, not even separated by a simple fence.

Some of the wood strips with many large nails were pointing upwards, while other heavy-duty steel I-beams had twisted, sharp edges.

This construction waste along Elmbridge Way was a great road safety concern for pedestrians and drivers.

In that area, most of the pedestrian walkways are blocked due to the building construction.

Elmbridge Way at Gilbert Road is one of the routes for senior pedestrians to walk from their homes to T & T

Supermarket and for kids going to the Olympic Oval.

It is also a busy road connecting to YVR, Gilbert Road and Westminster Highway.

Today, I went there and saw that the waste was still there. It seems that the construction company is not going to dispose of it any time soon and doesn’t care much about public safety.

I don’t know if the company has a city permit to occupy the road surface and block the pedestrian walkways?

Shouldn’t the City of Richmond or WorkSafe BC regulate this improper behaviour?

I think public safety should be our community’s priority.

Suffice to say, Lia Weekes’ emotions were flowing this week back and forth between utter disbelief and anger.

Considering, however, she’d confronted a woman raising money for Weekes’ seriously ill son, Joshua, allegedly under false pretences, the little boy’s mom showed incredible restraint.

Earlier this month, Richmond mom Weekes — whose six-year-old son has leukemia and urgently needs a bone marrow transplant — had heard from a relative that a fundraising table was set up outside a Coquitlam supermarket, with Joshua’s face plastered all over posters.

A woman at the table was asking for money from the public to “help with costs” and claimed to work for the Canadian Blood Services (CBS).

Weekes and Joshua’s godmother decided to go and see the table and the woman, now identified by Global BC as Kyra Kathleen Foster.

“From the very beginning it didn’t feel right,” Weekes told the Richmond News on Wednesday.

“All of the other CBS drives were diligently communicated to us and this instance was a complete surprise. We had also never had CBS offer to solicit funds for the family... “(Foster’s) story kept changing and I began to feel more and more uncomfortable about the situation.”

At first, Weekes didn’t want to believe someone would be trying to capitalize on her son’s fight for life, but “red flags kept presenting themselves,” including Foster having her own credit card swiper at the table.

Weekes contacted CBS, but Foster had got to them first. “CBS told us that (Foster) must have had good intentions but gotten confused and she was willing to give us the funds she had raised on that one day.

“So, I accepted the funds and thanked

(Foster), even though the situation still didn’t feel quite right.”

A week later, Foster, despite claiming she’d only fundraised that one time, had, in fact, been seen using Joshua’s plight to solicit funds from the public on a total of four occasions at three different grocery stores. CBS has said that it does not solicit funds on behalf of any family.

And it turns out, Foster was spotted raising money for a different child in Ladner in March and Westshore RCMP on Vancouver Island are investigating a similar setup in Langford last Christmas.

According to Global BC, Foster has a history in the court system. In 2005, she was ordered to pay a Halifax property company more than $15,000. More recently, a court ordered her to pay more than $2,000 to her ex-landlords. They never received the money.

Foster told Global, via email, that she has been campaigning for sick children and she just had another family ask her for help.

Coquitlam RCMP is now investigating Foster, however, the detachment’s media spokesperson, Const. Jamie Phillipson, said via email to the News that the “ultimate goal is to determine if a criminal offence took place or if it was a case of See Weekes page 7

Refugee wins $1M lawsuit

A

judge has awarded a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo just over $1 million after the man was hit in a Richmond car crash and suffered injuries that reignited his post-traumatic stress disorder.

Olivier Yewa Shongu was born in and raised in the DRC, where a civil war in the 1990s disrupted his university education and led to the violent deaths of his parents and other family members.

He suffered nightmares, hallucinations, social phobia and panic and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. Shongu fled the country in 2005.

Shongu made his way to Vancouver, and from the time of his arrival to July 2012, he was able to keep his PTSD under control following a brief period of treatment.

“Mr. Shongu was in good health and leading a productive and happy life,” wrote Justice Robert J. Sewell’s in his decision.

“In that time, he obtained full-time employment..., met and married his wife and began a family. His wife described him as happy and social in that period.”

In July 2012, Shongu was working as a mobile security guard in Richmond, when his car was involved in an accident on No. 3 Road, just off Sea Island Way. As a result, he suffered injuries to his neck, shoulder, back and jaw and began to experience “a relapse of psychiatric symptoms following the accident.” Shongu had not worked since the accident.

The other driver, Jing Li, disagreed that Shongu’s symptoms were prompted by the accident, and denied responsibility for the collision. However, Sewell noted that the statement Li gave to ICBC immediately following the accident and her in-court account of the collision were not consistent.

hen 47-year-old school bus driver Tom Colins heard his job was in danger as a result of proposed budget cuts by the Richmond School District, he started drafting a letter to the board of education.

Despite several re-writes, by the time he got up to the podium at a meeting, to discuss the proposed cuts, nothing he wrote mattered — he spoke from his heart and

began sobbing at the prospect of missing his students. He never once voiced concern about his own personal situation.

It’s not a typical scene at a public meeting, nor is it expected from a gentleman the Richmond News described as “burly.”

Patience, passion required From page 8 shuttles around on a weekly basis.

Born in Vernon and raised in Surrey — where he still lives — Colins worked in landscaping for most of his adult years until finding a new job with Coast Mountain Bus Company four years ago. After one year, he moved to the district.

A family man — with a wife of 18 years and two sons — there are few questions you can ask of Colins that won’t garner a response that doesn’t involve the consideration of others, especially family.

What does he do when he’s not at work?

He crabs, fishes and rides bikes with his kids.

If not with his kids, then what?

“I hang out with my wife, go out for dinner, work on my home,” said Colins.

His two boys have learning challenges, something that has given Colins the patience required for transporting students in need of one-on-one care.

He helps coach both his sons in sports, which helps break his 14-year-old son out of his shell.

“We’ll go at each other. It’s fun. And it’s a challenge,” he chuckles.

He also cracks shells at work, a job he notes is not just driving students from point A to point B. “When I started, I said I would drive any bus, any route, any time, it doesn’t matter.

And then I got this run and you work with the same bus aide day-in and day-out,” said Colins. “We have one little girl who came on the bus and she kept her head down at first. But slowly she raised her

head and she liked to go a certain (route) . . . if it was a different way she would get upset. Now she gets on the bus and she’s yelling my name and she’s looking at me in the mirror and saying ‘boo,’ — that’s her latest thing. The kids, you make a bond with them. And it’s their decision if they accept you or not,” explained Colins.

He said his job is part of the education process, as getting kids to and from school in a comfortable and reliable manner helps parents, teachers and colleagues. If kids show up to school “off the wall,” it can have an immediate impact on learning in the classroom, noted Colins.

He questions if the same job can be done in a for-profit environment, should the district privatize the service, as proposed.

“Would a private for-profit company send out two people on a 45-minute round trip for one student?”

n Driving fines double for failing to stop for Tom

Last week, the provincial government announced it will more than double the fines for drivers who fail to stop for a parked school bus with its lights flashing.

Minister of Transportation Todd Stone said fines will increase from $167 to $368, to come in line with other Canadian provinces.

According to the government, between 2009 and 2011, 1,100 violation tickets have been issued by police for such infractions.

While no child in B.C. has died while getting on or off a bus, 14 have been injured.

Electrically Powered Vehicles are Fine Until the Power Grid Shuts Down

hese days the electric vehicle (EV) seems a marvel of 21st century technology and an environmental success. In fact, electrically powered vehicles have operated continuously, albeit for niche purposes, since the mid-19th century: for example, milk delivery via ‘milk floats’ especially in the UK, and, since the early 1950s, golfer transport.

Is any vehicle as universally loved and laughed at as the humble little golf cart? But despite the EV’s long history and the shine of its new manifestations, consumers have hesitated. According to GreenCarReports, in Canada in 2016, of the bumper crop of 1.9 million total passenger vehicles sold, roughly 6,600 were EVs, a market share of roughly .033%.

Since peaking in 2012, DesRosier Automotive Consultants reported last quarter that hybrid sales are down 32%. In Ontario, the vehicle ‘fleet’ of Canada’s most populous province includes only 5,800 EVs. Other motorized jurisdictions have similar statistics: the US has 36.3% of global sales with over 363,000 cars delivered since 2008 through August 2015, but last year EV sales fell 17%; Germany, with six times the population of Ontario, has been aiming since 2010 for (just!) one million EVs on the road by 2020. So far—50,000— with the optimistic revised goal of 100,000 by 2020.

Consumers are hesitant for many reasons. The standard set of worries includes range, the still spotty re-charging infrastructure, the lengthy re-charge process, and the relatively high cost without offsetting gas savings, especially these days, and the ongoing development of the technology. There is also the pesky question of their environmental beneficence.

In a short video at https://www.facebook.com/ oilfieldzone/videos/10153918476383913/ Bjorn Lombard, a high a technology writer, compares CO2 emissions produced in the manufacture, operation, and ultimate scrapping of EVs and gasoline powered cars. He explores EVs as ‘coal-powered’ vehicles and the ‘wishful thinking’ that renewables like wind and solar will soon replace fossil fuel based electricity generation.

What then might persuade an average vehicle buyer to jump on board this ever-changing bandwagon? Based on the enthusiastic response to Tesla’s recent launch of the Model 3 —roughly 275,000 consumers have paid the requisite $1,000 deposit for the 2016 model, delivery of which may not happen for two to three years—Matt Teske, a marketing expert in Portland Oregon set out to prove that the problem is simply the age-old one of product desirability.

Mr. Teske published information about an imaginary concept EV named the Chevrolet Jolt EV complete with a sophisticated website touting all its latest desirable features: 230 miles of estimated range, advanced onboard safety technology, fully customizable touch screen display and dashboard, for under $30,000. Within hours, traffic to the site crashed his server. “The site wasn’t ever about tricking anyone,” he said. “It was a way to show automakers that if they offered more compelling electric cars, consumers would respond.”

Another motivator in Ontario, at least, may be government mandate. Last week, Premier Wynne’s government promised a program to encourage in the near future the replacement of millions of gasoline-powered cars with electrically powered motor vehicles.

There is, however, one problem with all of this. When the power grid is down – a serious local and national concern that we avoid thinking about - there will be no re-charging and only petroleum powered and hybrid vehicles will be operating.

Tips on battling drought LYNDAPASACRETA Gardening

L

ast year, El Nino brought the Lower Mainland steady days of sunshine, high humidity and hot weather. It was a wake up call on realizing water is not a renewable resource at certain times of the year.

Watering restrictions are again in effect, two weeks early this year.

Drought conditions can be a gardener’s worst nightmare. When a hot, dry weather pattern settles in, it affects your landscape in a variety of ways. There’s nothing you can do to prevent a drought, but there are some strategies you can do to help minimize the effect it has on your landscape.

The most obvious way a drought affects your garden is the way it makes your plants look: Healthy green leaves wilt, develop crispy brown edges, or die completely; flowers fade more quickly or fail to appear at all; and plants (even weeds) grow more slowly.

Drought weakens your plants, increasing how susceptible they are to attack from insects and disease.

It also makes plants less winter-hardy, especially if the drought occurs in the fall as plants are going dormant. The hot, dry conditions have a lasting effect, too. Trees and shrubs, in particular, can take several years to fully recover from drought. The City of Richmond lost several trees to the drought last year.

There are some things you can do during drought conditions to conserve water and keep your plants healthy.

Most garden plants like about an inch of moisture per week. In most cases, it is better to apply the water weekly or every other week. It’s a bit of a waste to give your plants less water more frequently. Doing so discourages the roots from growing as deeply into the soil (where it stays moister longer) as they can, and it’s also inefficient as more water is lost to evaporation.

A two to three-inch-deep layer of mulch over the soil can do wonders. It keeps the soil cooler and shields the ground from direct sun. The benefit is that moisture stays in the soil longer, where it’s more available to your garden plants.

Run a soaker hose underneath your mulch to maximize water savings. Water will be delivered directly to the ground (reducing evaporation) and slowly (reducing water loss to runoff). It will also keep See Mulch page 11

plant foliage dry, which helps prevent many common fungal diseases such as black spot on roses.

If you apply fertilizers, stop at the onset of a drought.

Fertilizers encourage plant growth. The more a plant grows, the more moisture it needs. If fertilizer salts build up in your soil because they’re not naturally leaching out with rain or irrigation, they can build up and burn plant roots, causing further damage.

Getting those weeds out of the garden is especially important during drought.

The reason: weeds’ roots steal valuable moisture from the soil.

Removing spent blooms before they have a chance to set seed saves energy for your plants. They don’t need to put extra energy (which they need water for) into producing seeds.

During times of drought, our gardens show signs of stress. Our lawns will brown out. Take heart, though — in most cases, the lawn is not dead but merely dormant and will regain its green

colour as soon as adequate moisture returns. (A lawn requires only one-quarter of an inch of water every three weeks to stay alive.)

The initial symptom of drought stress on trees and shrubs is a marginal scorching of leaves, and in some cases wilting of entire plants. Yellowing of interior needles on evergreens may also occur. When irrigated, by either irrigation or rainfall, most plants will recover. The season following a drought, plants may show reduced shoot and diameter growth, smaller or fewer leaves, and varying degrees of dieback.

Weakened trees and shrubs can also be expected to have more disease and insect problems for several years to come. Evergreens especially, may brown, drop needles and die suddenly.

Concentrate your efforts on plants that mean the most to you, are hardest to replace and most valuable.

Annuals should be your last concern! When choosing new plants for your gardens, look for hardy drought resistant plants.

Woody plants most in need of supplemental irrigation are

those that were planted this year or within the last few seasons. Trees and shrubs that have been in the ground longer are more likely to have better developed root systems that can use large volumes of soil to get the water they need.

Another category of vulnerable woody plants are shade-loving trees and shrubs, especially those that have been planted in a full sun location.

Examples are: flowering dogwood, Japanese maple, rhododendron and other broad-leaved evergreens.

Ash, birch and maple are particularly sensitive to drought stress.

Even if leaves wilt during a hot day, most plants will recover at night if sufficient soil moisture is present. Plants that do not recover overnight must be watered to prevent permanent damage.

For those people living in condominium or townhouses complexes, do not forget to water the trees on the boulevards in front of your complex.

A Girl’s Gotta Do What A Girl’s Gotta Do

Through July 3 Richmond Art Gallery Vancouver artist Lyse Lemieux’s artwork balances between representation and abstraction while still maintaining a relationship to the human figure. This exhibition marks a dramatic departure from Lemieux’s smaller, more familiar, fabric and ink drawings. These large new works optimize the expansive exhibition space and are largely derived from the intimate scale drawings found in Lemieux’s numerous sketchbooks. In addition to the large wall drawings, a series of felt and ink drawings will be shown as well as a new sculptural work. June 23 to March, 2017 Richmond Museum Local history and modern technology will combine to create an experiential examination of the the marvellous and strange objects people have left for posterity. Title planning 101 The dramatic price increases in real estate here over the past couple of years has affected peoples’ Estate planning and has triggered more discussion of what to do with titles to properties they own.

Feeling the support as the 50 km focus narrows on Rio In 2015, race walker Evan Dunfee won gold at the Pan-American Games in Toronto. Looking ahead to the 2016 Rio Olympics, he will try and build on his success, fighting for a spot on the podium.

Dunfee will take Richmond News readers along his journey to Rio; sharing thoughts on training, competing and what it’s like to be a top-level athlete.

W

ith the World Race Walking Team Championships, my first major competition of the year, behind me, everything now focuses on Rio. Because my major focus for the Olympics is on the 50 km distance, I have elected to bypass the remaining international races so I can slog away the high mileage weeks I need to get me into peak shape when I step on the start line in Brazil.

My training from here on out will be split up into two distinct training blocks.

The first training block will be done here in Richmond, where I will be laying down the gauntlet with up to 200 km weeks until the end of June.

After a short rest, I’ll be off to St. Moritz, Switzerland for the second block, a highintensity altitude block.

St. Moritz is one of the most beautiful places on Earth and I’ll lucky enough to train there along side many Olympic and World Championship medalists.

The 50 km distance is very unforgiving and every time I’ve done one I’ve gained a wealth of experience.

I’ve then been able to take that experience and apply it to the next race and this strategy is part of the reason that I have improved in each of the five 50 km races I have done in my career.

Last year, I took an astounding 14 minutes off of my time, culminating in a Canadian record in December in a time of 3:43:45.

This performance ranks me 13th heading into Rio. It is this info that I used when I was setting my goals for the Olympics.

First and foremost, the goal is to finish in the top eight. At 25 years old, I have at least one more Olympics in me before I reach my peak and hopefully four years from now anything short of a medal will be a disappointment. But for now, a top eight would be an outstanding achievement.

50 km is unforgiving and therefore unpredictable. Anything can happen on the day and that is why my secondary goal in Rio is to put myself in a position to capitalize if others falter.

What this means is that I want to put myself in a position where, if I am having a great day and others are struggling, the podium becomes a real possibility.

To do this though, I know I will need to latch onto the lead group from the beginning and hold on for dear life.

This will likely mean getting myself fit enough to walk under 3:40:00 (4:24 per km, for 50 km).

I’m very confident that Richmond and St. Moritz are the places I need to be this summer to get me to 3:40:00 and I’ve been overwhelmed by the support I receive from strangers every day I am out walking.

Having what feels like an entire city behind me already feels like it’s spotted me a couple minutes. And with two more hard months of training, I’m confident I’ll find those minutes.

Chuckers come up just short on home turf Mark Booth

A

rookie right-hander from Ladner is one of the few to have an answer for the Richmond Bantam AAA Chuckers so far this minor baseball season.

The Chuckers steamrolled to the championship game of their own Queen Victoria Day Invitational over the long weekend — averaging over 10 runs per game in three impressive victories. Richmond looked poised to capture its second tournament in as many tries this season before running into Braedy Euerby and the Delta Tigers.

The starting pitcher limited the Chuckers to just four hits and no walks to lead the Tigers to a 3-0 victory. Euerby also received some timely defence and a little luck too with four hard hit infield line outs, including a pair that producing rally killing double plays.

If Richmond head coach Alex Klenman wasn’t already convinced it wasn’t going to be his team’s day, then the top of the seventh provided further evidence.

The hosts loaded the bases with nobody out against reliever Caleb Cassie when another scorching line drive resulted in double play to essentially end the game.

Ironically, the game was similar to when the Chuckers dropped a 3-1 decision in league play to Euerby and the Tigers last month. He is now responsible for two of the team’s five losses this season in 32 games.

“That’s baseball. It can be a funny game like that,” shrugged Klenman. “We faced this kid earlier in the year and he had our number pretty good. Today, we hit four line drives that were screamers and they happened to be in the right place. As coaches, you don’t feel bad about hard outs. You know at some point they are going to fall. It just didn’t happen today.

“You have to give (Euerby) a lot of credit, too. To be able to throw two pitches consistently for strikes

at this age level is tough. We like would to get him again at some point. It was like watching a replay (of the first game).”

The Chuckers will host Delta again in league play on June 8 in what is developing into an intriguing, yet very friendly, rivalry.

The Tigers are just a second-year program but have the advantage of pulling talent from all three associations in Delta. The team is guided by Cam Frick who played under Klenman back in 2008 and also coached within Richmond City Baseball before returning to his hometown.

“A couple of times Alex came over, looked at me and just smiled,” laughed Frick. “He knows I have him read pretty good. They are a very solid team.”

Delta took out defending champion Okotkos in a 3-2 semi-final thriller. Meanwhile, the Chuckers were making it look easy despite a very challenging schedule, including an 8-2 win over league-leading Abbotsford to advance to the championship game.

Rookie left Justin Thorsteinson gave Richmond another outstanding start on the mound.

Carter Castle, Gabriel Suessenbackher-Fu and Reid Dawson were equally effective in their starts.

Finkelstein, Howells and Broderick were solid in relief.

Dustin McElwain led the attack against Abbotsford with three hits, including a key two-run double in the third. The Chuckers opened the tournament with a 17-hit attack against Alberta’s Parkland Twins — a 12-4 romp.

“We hit the ball extremely well all weekend with a lot of extra base hits,” said Klenman. “(The final) might had been a different game had we scored early.”

Klenman also had high praise for the parent volunteers who make the tournament possible every year.

“I can’t say enough about parent group that put this on,” he added.

“They sacrificed their whole weekend here form crack dawn until evening, This group was fantastic and we can’t do this without them. They make it easy for the boys to just come and play.”

Blaze hold off Tigers in RASA Summer League Div. 1 showdown n early season showdown for top spot in the RASA Summer League’s First Division featured plenty of wide open play and scoring as the Delta Blaze turned back the Rino Tigers 5-4.

The Blaze looked poised to run the Rinos right out of Dugald Morrison Park as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the 30th minute. But the Tigers regrouped and pressured Blaze for the remainder of the half and were unlucky not to get on the scoreboard following a number of close calls on

the Delta net.

In the second half, it was all out attack for Rino and within 20 minutes they had scored twice to make it a one goal game.

They kept up the pressure but this left the Tigers defending vulnerable to counterattacks. As they buzzed for the equalizer, the Blaze broke the away and restored a two goal lead. Delta would find another opening and make it a 5-2 to seemingly be back in full control.

Caitlin Davie had a leading role in Richmond FC becoming the first city women’s soccer team to win a provincial championship in 30 years. The former UBC standout led the Metro Women’s Soccer League’s premier division in scoring then continued her dominance around the net with four more goals in Provincial Cup play, including the game winner in the semi-finals. Richmond FC will now represent BC at the national championships later this year in St. John’s Newfoundland. The Richmond News is proud to recognize Caitlin as Athlete of the Month for May.

However, the Tigers lived up to their name and clawed back to make it 5-4 with 15 minutes remaining when the valiant comeback finally ran out of time.

The Blaze now sit at 3-1-0 on the season, while the Tigers fell to 2-0-1.

In Division Two RASA action, Ex-Pats FC and Richmond All Blacks share the lead at the top of the table with 3 wins and one loss each. EPFC beat Tanoah 6-1 and All Blacks beat the Graduates 4-2.

Wildcats claw out decisive win at zone championships T

he competition got a lot tougher for Richmond Secondary Schools’ top athletes as they took on their counterparts from Burnaby and New West at the Zone Track and Field Championships.

Perennial Richmond champions MacNeill Ravens took their usual big team out to Burnaby, but it was the McMath Wildcats, led by an overwhelmingly strong girls contingent, that swept all three team honours.

The Steveston school won both the Girls and Boys divisions to top the overall standings by a considerable margin. McMath’s combined point total (608) was more than double the next nearest school (305).

The Wildcats held off a strong team from Burnaby Central (195-170) to capture the boys title, while the girls completely dominated.

They amassed a whopping 413 points to finish well ahead New West (138) and Burnaby Central (135).

The McMath roster features several Richmond Kajaks, including national ranked athletes Carson Bradley and Cameron Rogers. The Wildcats also did well in relay events. It added up to winning 23 of the 84 overall events.

The Grade 8 contingent was led by triple jumper Caitlyn Bradley-Tse leaping to a B.C leading 10.10 metres.
