rtists are the earthworms of society. They crawl through the garbage and waste, turning it into fertile soil.

At least that’s what one of the nominees told me at the reception following the Richmond Arts Awards ceremony at city hall Tuesday night. (The list of six winners was in Wednesday’s paper and is online.)

While not the most glamorous image, the notion that artists are as fundamental to human society as earthworms are to the ecosystem, is one I agree with as, I imagine, most people in that room would. This was, after all, a night to celebrate the individuals and organizations that do their part to turn cultural waste into a creatively fertile community.

The wonder of the event is discovering the many hidden gems, people toiling in their artistry, creating, or supporting others to create, some truly brilliant works of art.

But among the chatter and self-congratulations (which I fully participated in) about how Richmond is home to some true inspirations, I had a couple of concerning conversations.

The first was with one of the award winners who works tirelessly in this community, and has done so for decades, supporting visual artists. As we discussed her many projects and committees, she let it slip that she’d recently moved to the valley because she couldn’t afford Richmond housing prices.

Soon after, I spoke with an accomplished classical vocalist, who has a master’s degree in music, has toured Europe and who’s currently working on yet another degree. She, too, is looking to move, thanks to housing prices.

None of this is new. We’ve spilled plenty of ink at the News on this issue, but it still distresses me to hear the very folks we need to create an artistically rich community are being economically forced out of town.

But remember, this was a night to celebrate sideways thinking. Enter: Guest speaker Genevieve Bucher, president of Artscape, a not-for-profit, intent on creating hubs of artistic convergence, spaces that act like, as she says, “acupuncture” — a pin prick that releases a flow of energy through the whole body (or community). Among her ideas is housing for artist-led families. In a city where there is precious little subsidized housing as it is, it’s hard to imagine how we’ll support a niche market like that. But actually, this idea isn’t so far fetched — even for Richmond.

As part of the city’s arts strategy, there is an eye to helping create a neighbourhood or hub, where studios meet galleries, meet living spaces, meet commerce. This notion is already in the books.

Point being, we have the people, we have the ideas, what we need is to put our money where our mouth is and truly understand what it would mean to lose our earthworms.

Property: don’t just look at the title With real estate, two “levels” of ownership are legally recognized. The first is found on a title. The registered owner (or owners) have what is called “legal” title. The second level of ownership is called “beneficial” ownership, and is mainly based on a person’s contributions (in many ways) to the property.

Earlier this week, in a case called M.J. v. M.W., the Court had to consider what a separated husband, not registered on title (to two properties), was entitled to. Titles to the properties were registered in the wife’s and her mother’s names. It appears that was done because the wife’s parents had contributed to the down payments, and the parents did not trust the husband.

But over several years, the husband did a lot of renovation and repair work on both properties, and made mortgage and other payments. In the end, the Court awarded him a one-third interest in his residential property and a half-interest in the other (rental) property.

In my opinion, the husband should have sought legal advice before agreeing not to go on title. There are steps a couple can and should take in buying a property when parents help financially with the purchase. This case was properly decided given the husband’s contributions over the years, but the husband took risks in not getting on title in the first place.

Dear Editor, Every day I see more houses demolished and more new construction begin. Much of the demolished material ends up in the landfill; most of the lumber for construction comes (I believe) from our forests.

Let’s trim our waste!

Dear Editor, I am extremely displeased by the recent decision of the Ministry of Education to withhold funds necessary to seismically upgrade schools in Richmond and Vancouver unless a 95 per cent utilization rate is achieved.

A utilization rate of 95 per cent is arbitrary, unfair and places no value on classrooms utilized for enriched learning spaces, such as music and art, or for desperately needed before and after-school care.

This government has continually prioritized large projects to the benefit of big business and the resource sector, particularly LNG. The proposed $3.5 billion dollar Massey Bridge project also comes to mind.

How many schools does $3.5 billion dollars buy you? One hundred million dollars was recently banked into a “prosperity fund” as if the government is benevolently saving for future citizens. B.C.’s future citizens are attending schools that will have varying degrees of failure in the event of an earthquake. B.C.’s future citizens are attending schools in which the government has deemed enriched learning spaces, such as art or music rooms, to be “empty classrooms.”

In Richmond alone, more than 6,700 students are sitting in classrooms that are seismically unsafe. They are in schools that are evaluated to have high risk of widespread damage or structural failure in the event of an earthquake.

We are told by experts to expect “the Big One” to happen any day. However, this government sees no problem with holding back all funds for seismic upgrading until its conditions are met. These small children are at risk

of death. It is unacceptable, and completely reprehensible that anyone would consider their lives a bargaining chip in the ongoing budget war the provincial government has been waging against education.

I am deeply upset with the Ministry of Education for taking the steps they have taken.

It is one thing to demand school boards cut costs, but it is completely another thing entirely to refuse to undertake any remediation to ensure children’s safety unless demands are met.

The school boards have been forced into a highly unenviable position of closing schools which are well attended in order to meet the Ministry of Education’s demands. The Richmond School Board is doing its duty to protect its students, despite knowing that when they close schools with specialized learning spaces, it will be to the students’ detriment.

I am a parent of a child who attends Diefenbaker elementary. Despite having hundreds of children less than a five-minute walk from school, despite it being filled with students, it is on the short list for closure. It has developed specialized learning spaces for students with learning challenges, a math lab and a before and after school care room. These are well utilized and much needed resources, despite the ministry stating otherwise.

I have challenged the minister of education, Mike Bernier, to speak with a voice of reason, and be a champion of students as the minister of education, not their adversary.

I ask you, concerned and caring citizens, to do the same.

City seeks solution for bus loop fears ALANCAMPBELL Staff Reporter

s police continue to probe the death of a motorcyclist, the City of Richmond is looking into short-term solutions to address safety concerns near the scene of the fatal accident.

Just after 2:30 pm on May 3, a Harley Davidson motorbike and a Coast Mountain bus collided at Fourth Avenue and Chatham Street in Steveston.

The bike was heavily damaged in the accident and its rider, a man in his early 40s from Fort McMurray, sustained critical injuries and later died.

Although Richmond RCMP are still “actively investigating” the accident, city staff are in the process of coming up with a plan to alleviate residents’ concerns about the visibility and safety impacts of having a large number of buses parked on Chatham Street at Second Avenue, about 200 metres from the crash site.

The immediate vicinity is recognized as an informal bus loop, but with no formal public transit exchange in place, the area is known to produce traffic issues.

“Staff are currently developing any feasible short term options to address the bus layover issues until an off-street bus exchange

is implemented,” said city spokesperson Ted Townsend via email.

“When these options are identified, staff plan to meet with TransLink staff to evaluate them.”

In the meantime, added Townsend, the “need for placing a high priority on the Steveston Bus Exchange was expressed by the city directly to TransLink” at the recent Elected Officials Forum for the Southwest Area Transport Plan (formerly known as the Richmond Area Transit Plan) held by TransLink.

At a recent public works and transportation meeting at city hall, Victor Wei, the city’s director of transportation, reported that there are typically a large number of buses parked on the north side of Chatham Street.

To address the issues created by the parked buses, said Wei, TransLink has committed to pursuing a permanent solution through the creation of a Steveston Bus Exchange when funding for the Mayors’ Council’s 10-Year Plan is secured.

Councillors on the committee suggested that TransLink be requested to amend the bus schedule or to move the location where buses are parked.

However, Wei advised that the current bus schedule is intended to serve the needs of Richmond residents and that there are labour contract issues which need to be taken into consideration prior to finding a solution.

ichmond’s Nicky Nickpasand considers herself to be a bit of a visionary, a quality she believes helped her recently be among teachers from across Canada to win a Prime Minister’s award.

Nickpasand, 50, owner of Fine Arts Montessori Centre on Garden City Road, said she strongly views young children as the future, something she firmly keeps in mind when devising lesson plans, especially for some youngsters who have trouble fitting into the regular flow of learning.

“These children, they are the future bank tellers, lawyers and doctors — people who will be looking after us when we are older,” she said. “We have to treat them properly so they can learn well.”

Originally from Iran, Nickpasand came to Canada in 1994 and immediately put her degree from the University of Tehran to use, first working at the elementary school level. She then switched to the early childhood education stream where she felt she could make a bigger difference.

In 2004, she opened her own school and was the first in the region to offer fine arts as a major focus in the curriculum.

“We include a lot of dancing and singing here,” said Nickpasand, who earned a certificate of achievement for Excellence in Early Childhood Education. “It helps with the way young children learn.”

that teachers at her level need to possess an abundance of compassion to help youngsters along as they learn.

“We need to give the children a lot of hugs and kisses. We’re like their second mothers,” she said, adding that type of nurturing relationship can unlock ways to better learning strategies for some students. “We give the children much love because they are here eight to 10 hours a day, then they’re home for...two hours before they are asleep.”

When it comes to adapting approaches to learning, Nickpasand said that can be as varied as the individual.

“A lot of schools can tend to focus on a student’s behaviour and lose sight of the uniqueness to of the person and their particular needs.

“I believe every child is gifted in different ways.”

Yap — B.C.’s multiculturalism minister from March 2012 until his resignation in March 2013 — was one of 20 people Brian Bonney agreed to not have any contact with as part of conditions agreed to Tuesday when he was charged criminally with a breach of trust on the back of the 2013 “quick wins” ethnic outreach scandal inside Yap’s government department.

As he was the minister in charge of the department at the centre of his former communications director’s case, Yap was asked by media at the Legislature in Victoria on Wednesday how he felt about seeing Bonney charged with a breach of trust.

“This was the result of an extensive, long process, through the special prosecutor, independent from government, so we’d have to believe that it was a very thorough piece of work by the special prosecutor,” said Yap. “We have to respect it, and I certainly do.

And as far as commenting specifically, we really shouldn’t be commenting because it’s before the courts now.”

Asked if he found it concerning that the charge reflects badly on himself, Yap cited

that Bonney was a “member of the civil service, and he was doing work that resulted in a review…” “…that process revealed some of the issues. And n John Yap MLA subsequently the special prosecutor did the work. So, I have to say that we respect the process and the matter is now before the court. So, I really shouldn’t be commenting on it.”

When asked if he had any idea as to why his name was on Bonney’s no-contact list, Yap said he “saw a number of names on there. It’s public. I really have no idea why my name was on there. There were other names on there, as well.”

On Wednesday and Thursday, the Richmond News was unable to reach Yap for comment. However, when asked by the News if Yap has ever been interviewed by the RCMP in connection with Bonney’s charge, Ben James, the BC Liberal Government Caucus’ director of communications, said “no.”

Angel puts thought into food MATTHOEKSTRA Contributor

A

ngel Luk is a registered dietician who counsels patients, athletes and ordinary people on diet and nutrition. So lecturing family and friends on the benefits of blueberries and perils of pepperoni must be a staple of Luk’s dinner parties.

“Never,” she laughs. “Not even if I see someone licking butter like a Popsicle.

People are already self-conscious enough eating with me.”

Luk serves as a clinical dietician with Vancouver Coastal Health at Richmond’s Garrett Wellness Centre, where she helps patients before and after surgery. She is also a nutrition consultant at the Richmond Olympic Oval, where she dishes advice to high-performance athletes and also hosts public workshops on healthy eating.

Coming this summer is her book, You Can’t Out-Train a Bad Diet, which she describes as a simple guidebook in performance nutrition for all athletes.

“It was inspired by young athletes. Working with them made me realize just how amazing these athletes can be in their sport and yet how little education they may receive about how to fuel well,” says Luk, 29, from the oval’s O Cafe patio. “Most athletes start at a young age and if they don’t receive that education about how to eat well and properly, they might give way to a lot of misinformation.”

The Steveston High grad says she always knew she wanted to be a dietician. Well, she did have one other career in mind.

“Let’s backtrack,” she allows. “When I was young I always wanted to be a janitor. I think I read a book in elementary school about a really friendly janitor. I felt that I like to clean things, I like to organize, I’m friendly — I

think I can do this.”

A clear shift to dietetics came in high school. She loved home economics class and knew she wanted a career structured around food and health. She went on to graduate from UBC. with an honours degree in dietetics.

So how about a nugget or two of advice for those looking to trim a few pounds’ worth of cheesecake? Luk suggests small, frequent meals.

“Don’t cut carbs; don’t stop eating just because you want to lose weight. It’s so prevalent that people want to lose weight so they skip lunch or if they’re not hungry they don’t eat. But really, the key thing is you’ve got to keep your metabolism up. So, every two to three hours, it’s either a main meal or it’s a snack.”

Luk also suggests drinking two cups of fluid at each mealtime during summer — even for those in climate-controlled workplaces — keeping the body hydrated throughout the day. Important, she says, because the brain doesn’t always recognize the difference between thirst and hunger.

That first small meal of the day for Luk is usually plain yogurt mixed with half a cup of frozen fruit, a teaspoon of maple syrup or honey, granola and a tablespoon or two of fibre cereal.

And lunch?

Today, it was a wholegrain flatbread with cheese and tomato, homemade yellow split pea vegetarian soup and water.

“It’s not always like that though,” she laughs. “I eat Church’s Chicken. You will find me at McDonald’s I swear — and I’m not wearing sunglasses and a hood.”

The key is to keep McChickens in check.

Luk suggests following the 80/20 rule — strive for healthy food choices 80 per cent of the time, and eat guilt free for the rest.

For athletes, she suggests a stricter ratio of 90/10.

tion of her own. In March, she completed her first short triathlon after only learning to swim in January.

“Setting goals is important,” she says. “For my age and gender I was close to dead last, but to me it was still such an accomplishment because I’ve always wanted to swim since I was a little girl, and have never been able to do it. For me to do it for this, I’ve

already won. I’m a better version of myself now.”

Luk’s upcoming cooking workshops at the oval include “Fuel for Gold: You Can’t Out-Train a Bad Diet” on June 15 and “Viva Parents: Skip Cooking and Washing Dishes for One Night” on July 13.

poignant, short video about the dangers of being overtired on the job earned a pair of McNair secondary students first place in the Grade 11-12 category of the 11th annual WorkSafeBC Student Safety Video Contest.

Grade 12 students Joe Rose and Max Blanche, who have been friends since Grade 8, produced the two-minute clip called Overtime which focuses on a young construction worker, played by Rose, who gets progressively tired during his weekly work/life routine.

Rose’s character begins the clip on an upbeat note, happily waking up, brushing his teeth, picking out his clothes, chatting to a fellow transit rider at the bus stop bench, going about his work day on a construction site after picking up his safety helmet, then

coming home at the end of the day to feed his cat and then go to bed.

The cycle, filmed by Blanche, is repeated several times. But with

each repetition Rose’s character becomes more disengaged with his surroundings as accumulated fatigue takes hold. He rises a little slower in the morning, tooth

brushing lacks conviction, choosing clothes becomes a muddle, commuting chat decreases, and workplace safety habits decrease to the point that one day he makes the fatal mistake of not wearing his safety helmet.

The rest of the scenes show an empty bed, a rack of clothes without an owner, a bus stop bench with one lonely commuter, and a cat with no owner to feed it.

It ends with the tag line “Sleep is not a luxury, it’s a necessity.”

The impact is significant, said Theresa Watts, theatre teacher at McNair, who has had both Rose and Blanche as students since they were in Grade 9.

“Their peers are blown away by the work they do together,” Watts said. “They have set the bar so high. They are also very stubborn. I’ve tangled with them several times because they have a set vision of what they want to accomplish and a path all set out of how to get there.”

Their winning entry came with a $500 prize to divide between them, and $2,000 for their school.

More than 122 students took part in the contest, submitting 55 videos from 17 schools throughout the province.

Susan Bai, Alexandra Yu and Alice Lu from Richmond secondary placed second in the Grade 11-12 category with their animated video Impairment at work. The second place team also received $500 in prize money, while the school received $1,500.

Watt’s said Rose and Blanche’s high calibre of work is demonstrated by the fact both have been accepted into college programs that have small enrolment intakes and plenty of competition.

Watts said Rose will be studying acting at Langara’s Studio 58 program which has just 16 students per term, while Blanche will be among the nine accepted into Langara’s film program.

ric Pickersgill is a photographer who explores “the psychological and social effects that cameras and their artifacts have on individuals and societies as a whole.” His website www.removed.social.com displays his current show “Removed” at Rick Wester Fine Art in New York City, March 24 – May 21, 2016.

“Removed” is a series of large format black and white photographs of people in and from all ‘walks of life’ NOT interacting with each other or their environment because they are engaged in looking at their bare hand or hands posed as if holding something – obviously a cell phone. “Removed” has proved to be an enormously popular topic on the internet.

The text introducing “Removed” cites numerous statistics about the rapid uptake and high level of cellphone service subscriptions, a whopping “96.8% of the Earth’s population.” It also includes a US Department of Transportation statistic that distracted driving caused 10% of all fatalities (3,179 people killed) in 2014—which is not news to regular Road Rules readers.

Another cited source is the Pew Research Centre whose studies on US mobile ‘etiquette’ indicate that 77% of adults regard phone use while walking down the street as “generally OK”, 75% also saying OK to cellphone use on public transit. But etiquette and safety on this issue differ. In Germany they have a name for people so distracted by their phone they are oblivious to not just other people

but also sidewalk obstacles, intersections, and even oncoming traffic. They call them ‘smombies’, short for smartphone zombies.

Hence a new road design adaptation out of Augsburg, Bavaria where strips of lights have been embedded in the pavement at two tram stops. When a tram is approaching, the lights flash red to grab the attention of smombies. Tobias Harms, an Augsburg city councillor, said: “We realized that the normal traffic light isn’t in the line of sight of many pedestrians these days, so we decided to have an additional set of lights — the more we have, the more people are likely to notice them.”

Media reports on Augsburg’s invention add that it is not, however, “the first city to institute special safety measures for people who text and walk.”

They report that in 2014, Chongquing in southwest China separated one of its major sidewalks into two lanes, designating one lane for cellphone users using graphics on the pavement surface warning “Cellphones walk in this lane at your own risk.”

The 50- meter-long, 3-meter-wide road, known as “yangrenjie,” or “foreigners’ street,” is a popular tourist attraction. Reports in China Daily say tourists, however, tend to photograph the sidewalk more than they obey the regulation.

In a related story out of New Jersey, it has been reported that assemblywoman Pamela Lampitt, has proposed banning “walking while texting” and prohibiting pedestrians on public roads from using smartphones that are not hands-free. Ms. Lampitt reportedly said pedestrians’ risky behaviour is a danger to themselves and drivers and should be penalized, citing a US National Safety Council report documenting 11,101 distracted walking incidents over the past 10 years.

ansdowne Centre was awash in pageantry and pride of Asian heritage on Saturday as it hosted local celebrations for Asian Heritage Month.

Organized by the Richmond Chinese Community Society (RCCS), the free Asian Heritage Fair featured a variety of multicultural performances ranging from the lion dance, Chinese culture dance, taekwondo, classical Indian dance, Chinese opera, tai chi, traditional Filipino dance and traditional Okinawa-style drumming.

The colourful performances were complemented by the skill and art of Chinese calligraphers, Korean pottery and many other Asian cultural demonstrations and community booths.

Throwsfest has special meaning to coach Mark Booth

t will be far more than just another weekend meet for Garrett Collier and the Kajaks.

Saturday’s Richard Collier Big Kahuna Throwsfest is in recognition of the tremendous work the longtime coach did with the Richmond track and field club. So is the venue where the competition takes place.

The Collier Throws Centre opened last spring at Minoru Park. Months later, Richard Collier lost his battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. His son Garrett is now continuing his legacy as the club’s head coach.

“This is probably one of the top places to throw in the country,” said Garrett. “It’s one of the few with a dedicated throws area and just the amount of time and money that the city put into this is impressive to me, coming from an NCAA Division One (background).”

The Collier Throwsfest will feature all four disciplines — shot put, discus, javelin and hammer — with athletes ranging from Midget (14-15) to senior (under 35) age. The competition gets underway at 10 a.m. Other than the Bondarchuk Cup in Kamloops, it’s the only meet exclusively for throwers in B.C. “My dad came up with this idea around the fall of 2014 as a way to keep throwing going throughout the year,” explained Garrett. “We have since found a weekend that was pretty open and decided to do a reboot and move it to now. We had a meet earlier in the spring and had some really good feedback and this will be a shorter version of that.

“We have had athletes like (No. 1 ranked Canadian in shot put) Heather Steacy and (Canadian record holder) Sultana Frizell come through here and love it. It’s one of the only places like it.”

And it most certainly beats the previous training area at Minoru where Garrett bloomed into one of the top throwers in the

country under his dad’s nurturing. “The old discus cage was about half this size and wasn’t necessarily safe either. There was a (walkway) about 62 metres out so we had to be careful once we could throw beyond that.”

Garrett took his discuss/hammer talents to the University of Cal Berkeley and remained with the sport after his competitive career by working as the throws coach at the University of Hawaii for nine years. The position brought the Honolulu native back to where

he spent the first five years of his life until his parents moved to Vancouver in 1984.

Even with a good job in a fantastic location, Collier yearned for a change that would bring him back home. He was hired by B.C. Athletics as technical director in 2012 and took on the Kajaks head coaching role last summer.

“Hawaii is an amazing place and I have the luxury of having family there,” added Collier.

“A lot of my friends here were doing some things, moving and shaking, and I just didn’t

want to stay in Hawaii the rest of the time. I moved back here on a whim and knew of a couple of jobs that had opened up.

“When my dad way ready to pack it up, I just stepped in and took over the reigns.

(Lead coach) Byron Jack has been amazing to work with. We both have busy schedules but the love for this club is strong. It’s a good relationship.”

Gilles recognized for outstanding rookie season in NLL

the season, Gilles was one of the most active players in the community, and regularly made appearances at hospitals, charitable events and schools.

he 2016 box lacrosse season in Richmond is highlighted by the city’s first all-girls team in recent memory.

The Richmond Roadrunners Pee Wee girls team is the brainchild of manager and co-head coach Sean Widdess, who launched the squad with the support of the Richmond Lacrosse Association president Glenn Jensen.

The RLA already has boys’ teams in eight divisions.

“There were no existing female minor lacrosse teams in Richmond, but once we got the word out, there was a tremendous level of interest and we ended up having to cap our roster size,” explained Widdess.

Starting a team from scratch has not been without its challenges, as 12 of the 19 girls had not played before. Interest for an all-female team was so great that three of the members are Novice players aged up to play Pee Wee, while others come from neighbouring cities that do not have their own girls’ team.

CAPOEIRA Starting June 2

Intro course Tue & Thu at 7:00pm Mixed level class Tue/Thu/Sat Capoeira (“kap-oo-ay-rah”) is an AfroBrazilian martial art developed in the 1500s by African and Indigenous slaves in Brazil as a form of self-defence from their oppressors. It is marked by its agile and tricky movements that may be executed anywhere from an upside-down position, to a gravity defying kick. It has a strong acrobatic component in some styles and is always played with music. All experience levels welcome. Capoeira Intro course recommended for first time students.

PILATES REFORMER New Sessions Start June 3 Mondays at 6:15pm, Tuesdays at 9:15am and Fridays at 9:15am A full-body workout performed on specialized Pilates equipment called a Reformer. Reformer training focuses on specific breath patterns, proper alignment, core stabilization, and muscular endurance training. Small groups of up to 4 participants receive personal attention along with a workout designed to lengthen, strengthen and balance the entire body.

KINESIS ACTIVE AGING New Sessions Start May 31 Tue/Thu at 11:00am Kinesis™ is for anyone looking to strengthen the mind and body connection, restoring balance with movements that simulate everyday activities.
