rust — it’s a delicate thing.

And while it often relies more on a sense than logic, trust (or the lack of) can be a big player in any kind of negotiation — from jet fuel pipelines to tree bylaws.

In Wednesday’s paper, we ran a story about city council calling for going back-to-squareone regarding the jet fuel pipeline. The mayor and others argued that, because the consortium (representatives of the airline industry) advocating for the pipeline did a last-minute amendment to the proposal (increasing the pipeline’s diameter) there should be a new environmental review.

Councillors (all but Alexa Loo) are concerned that the wider pipeline could significantly increase the amount of fuel that will be pumped through it, subsequently meaning more fuel stored at the tank farm on the Fraser River, which could mean more fuel-filled barges plying the river on their way to and from the tank farm. Councillors also speculated that the consortium may want to sell the excess fuel to other airports.

As Coun. Harold Steves admits, this is all “conjecture at this time as to what exactly they are doing because they’re not telling us.”

In other words, keeping people in the dark fuels (excuse the pun) suspicion. And even if the consortium did explain its plans, (see page 8), there are still legitimate concerns.

Which brings me to Richmond’s tree bylaw.

Also in Wednesday’s paper, we had a letter about a majestic willow tree on Seafair Drive that the writer said appears to be threatened by a new development. This letter followed an earlier one, basically making the same point about the same tree.

The City of Richmond has since informed us that, in fact, no decision has been made regarding the tree; that it is city policy to inspect all trees in the surrounding area of a property that is slated to be redeveloped; that they have asked the developer to get a second opinion from an independent arborist regarding the health of the tree; and, finally, it will only be removed if it poses a safety risk to the community.

I don’t doubt this is the case, yet questions about the city’s commitment to tree preservation persist. We receive no end of letters and social media comments lamenting the destruction of trees in Richmond. Every one of those letters blame development and the city’s lax enforcement of its own tree bylaw. The problem is that the stated intentions of the bylaw don’t jive with what people experience.

Richmond’s tree canopy has diminished remarkably, even in the past five years. Until people start seeing something different, the letters will keep coming.

Similarly, until council sees a more legitimate process and environmental review of the pipeline plan, it’s quite right to be skeptical.

Good enough to be Committee When two or more people apply to act as Committee over a person, Courts sometimes have trouble determining who the best person is. The Court must choose among several factors in reaching its decision.

Last week, reasons for judgment were released in the case Re Struthers, in which the patient had no living children but had a grandson and a son in-law who both sought to act as Committee.

The Court found that the grandson, an RCMP member, seemed to focus more on preserving the financial assets; whereas the son in-law, a retired former RCMP and plastics company employee, admitted that he had made some judgmental errors in using some of his mother in-law’s money, but spent far more time with her than the grandson did.

The Court felt that the son in-law would be more wise with the funds in future, and that he should be named Committee (over the patient’s finances and person).

When acting as a Committee, contact with the patient matters. As important as the financial issues are, they are only part of the picture that is the patient’s best interests.

Kindness of stranger touches bereaved mom Dear Editor, These days, when there are feelings of fear and misinformation about others of different religions or skin colour, I experienced a wonderful story of human kindness.

On April 11, after leaving a groupsupport session at the Vancouver Cancer Clinic, I went for a walk along Broadway.

Passing a store called Rosewood Furniture Outlet, I decided to go in and began a conversation with a young man of Indian ancestry.

I was relieved when he told me that the furniture, constructed in India, was made under safe, healthy, unionized conditions.

I drifted further into the store and after a while, he approached me and asked: “Are you alright?”.

I paused, and then said, “No, I’m not.

My 51-year-old daughter, Trish, died last

night, from cancer.”

His eyes immediately filled with tears.

He introduced himself Diamond Paye and asked if it would be alright to give me a hug?

I gratefully said yes. Shortly after, he asked if I would like a cup of tea.

After I finished the tea....he said: “If you will accept it, I would like to send you home by taxi.”

I explained that I had come on the Canada Line and lived in Richmond, and that it was far too expensive. He didn’t bat an eye, phoned for a taxi, then paid the fare and tip to the driver.

He held the door open for me, and wished me: “God Speed.”

He set a wonderful example of how we need to be kind to each other.

Hospital delivers on all counts Dear Editor, ...and there she was, our first impression of our little bundle of joy ... dark, hairy, and slippery, born Monday April 4, 2016 at Richmond Hospital.

I’d like to write this letter to thank all the doctors, pediatricians, nurses, lab technicians, operation room nurses, medical students, cafeteria staff and support staff at the hospital for helping to bring little miracles into this world every day.

The doctors we met were knowledgeable, competent and friendly. The nurses who cared for us were like coaches; teaching, cheering and encouraging us in how to feed, burp, change, and care for our little miracle.

My husband and I would especially like to thank Dr. Brenda Wagner and Dr. Sarah Monahan for their expert care in delivering and overseeing our pregnancy, as well as Becky, Roswitha, Heather, Simone, Isabel, Crystal and Yuko, among all the nurses who went above and beyond to ensure the physical well being and comfort during our delivery and recovery.

We are very blessed to have such an excellent first class birthing centre in our community.

Thank you for taking care of bringing our future generation into this world!

More weeping Six lanes and a train, get on it for the willow Dear Editor, Tree bylaws are a joke in Richmond. The house that was beside us was sold to a guy who divided the house into an upper and lower suite. He got permission/permits to literally clear-cut his back yard — seven or eight large cedar, fir and a honey locust tree, which is/was a very rare tree, are all gone.

I called the city and was told by the rude, and I mean snarky rude, lady that most of the trees were rotten from the inside and that the owner had a master plan???

We were reassured that there would be replacement trees coming, they never did replace any of them!

We ended up with a flooded back yard and calls to city hall were met with a “it’s not our problem” attitude.

We called the works yard and they sent a pumper truck to take a look, and even they said we got screwed.

Money talks, taxpayers mean nothing to this council.

We moved after 40-plus years and could not be happier.

Dear Editor, Six lanes and a train — it’s a great motto and a reasonable solution, why can’t we even have the discussion?

I sent a lengthy email to all councillors and the mayors of Richmond and Vancouver, as well as key people in the B.C. government. What a disappointment to realize, yet again, that there are no effective ways to get our “leaders” to engage in a conversation with the community that their decisions actually affect.

Only Linda Reid’s office acknowledged my email and Carol Day actually provided some great and helpful information. I’d still like to know why we can’t have a discussion around a real solution for the commuters and commercial users of the Massey Tunnel that will not damage businesses, adversely affect the environment nor further reduce the limited financial resources of many area residents.

The email read: I have just read the Richmond paper and I’m wondering why the focus on the bridge question is not more about solutions that are reasonable? A solution that will actually move people through the corridor and not cars? Isn’t that the goal, to move people and save people time and money?

Having sat in the tunnel traffic back in the 1980s when traveling for school from Tsawwassen to Vancouver, it boggles my mind (no other

expression for it) that neither the provincial government nor the cities involved in this project are advocating for rapid transit with park and ride lots along the highway.

Surely, a six-lane bridge with rapid transit is a responsible solution that will actually affect congestion by moving people and not just cars. Re-locating the bottle neck up the highway is simply pointing out the obvious and offers no value to the argument as it doesn’t contribute to a solution!

Further, the comment that the projected tolls are merely an hour’s wages for a minimum wage worker is both insensitive and completely out of touch.

I operate a business in Richmond with employees who commute from Delta and Surrey — $50 a week for them is a huge amount of money, and I don’t expect to be able to keep these staff despite an hourly rate that averages $24. Asking them to spend more than five per cent of their annual salary on an additional commuter expense, with after-tax dollars is, in a word, unreasonable.

And yet I cannot afford to offset that by offering to cover that expense — it would be more than $7,000 per year for my company. I cannot afford that additional cost.

Richmond council and our MLAs should be advocating for “six lanes and a train.” If you really want to be

progressive, have a long-term perspective, eliminate congestion, save people time and address the bottle neck that vehicles create.

I’m not confident that anyone reading this letter even takes the bus and realizes that commuters wanting to travel by transit from Tsawwassen to Vancouver now have to bus to the River Rock and change to SkyTrain.

Buses no longer go into the downtown core from these locations and people are being funneled onto the train at Bridgeport.

Does anyone else not see a better solution here? Have any of you actually taken the bus as a form of transit to try and avoid the congestion? Has anyone else not thought that “six lanes and a train” makes for a catchy slogan and a solution that would help move people and not cars? For billions of dollars to be spent on a toll bridge when commuters have no other reasonable options is narrow minded thinking. I cannot expect my team to go from Delta over the Alex Fraser to end up in Steveston for work on time to be a “reasonable and just solution.”

Again, I find myself questioning whether the people in charge are even aware of what the experience is like. “Six lanes and a train” that’s my prayer, I can at least pray right?

City: Logo not an advertisement From page 7 City spokesperson Ted Townsend said the corporate logo was not advertising but “simply name/logo recognition,” likening it to corporate partners whose logos are found at city events.

Townsend said paying for standard police cars and firetrucks is “generally not something we would seek to fund through corporate partnerships.”

According to the city, the truck travels to major events, in addition to regularly visiting local schools to “enhance fire safety programs, provide seasonal public education messages and improve the perception, through education, that Richmond is a safe community.”

Deputy Chief Kim Howell said, more than 1,000 students have benefitted from the truck purchase since the fall.

“Safety is important for Richmond citizens as well as Fire-Rescue. ichmond Mounties are issuing a warning to the public about using messenger apps and iTunes cards.

Although the apps are a great way to share information and communicate with family and friends, platforms, such as WeChat, are also being widely used by criminal elements.

And, say the RCMP, people conversing on the likes of WeChat have become victims of scams and extortion.

“The criminal element is evolving and quite frankly, the digital world is their oyster,” said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

“Not too long ago, face-to-face communications were the norm. Now, with instant messaging and video chat so widely available, there are no guarantees that the person you believe you are having a conversation with even exists or is simply a Bot. “We are discovering that the WeChat platform is the common conduit.”

Also, the use of iTunes cards as payment or currency is an emerging phenomenon, added Hwang.

“The creation of an iTunes account using a stolen or fraudulently obtained credit card is not particularly onerous.

“Once created, iTunes cards can be deposited or transferred to other accounts and used to purchase a plethora of merchandise which can then be resold for cash.

“Any demands for payment in the form of

he City of Richmond has launched an online consultation process to determine the “lived experiences” of its residents with respect to housing affordability concerns.

An online survey will be complemented by an ongoing series of open houses to share comments, suggestions and/or concerns about Richmond’s affordable housing crisis.

The survey, which lasts until July 3, has already drawn impassioned responses from Facebook accounts of apparent residents on the city’s Facebook page.

“Lived in Richmond over 35 years and now feeling like I can’t afford to live here,” wrote Amie Sidhu.

“Too expensive to survive in Richmond,” stated Khadija Mengal.

The survey appears to focus on an apparent lack of housing supply as a primary cause of the city’s unaffordability.

It does not suggest curbing housing demand in the city, in order to address the problem.

In asking what one thinks is causing Richmond’s runaway housing costs, the city provides four specific options for city planners to address: “Help increase the supply of affordable rental apartments; Help increase the supply of affordable home ownership options; Advocate to the provincial and federal governments for additional funding for affordable housing; Ongoing research and planning to address affordable housing issues in Richmond.”

The survey intends to identify the wants and needs of Richmond residents. The city launched the consultation process to complement its ongoing review of the Richmond Affordable Housing Strategy.

The strategy was forged in 2007. Given that housing affordability has worsened since, the city says it now wants to look at ways to curb the problem and identify “potential gaps and ideas for future policy direction.”

At LetsTalkRichmond.ca, residents are able to review the 2007 strategy, as well as basic housing data, and then input their personal experiences.

Much of the data presented to participants is from the voluntary 2011 National Household Survey.

One problem affordable housing advocates have already identified, aside from housing prices, is a lack of market rental units.

Letters from Donaldson written to his superiors painted an early picture of Steveston and the struggles in establishing a church there.

“The position and conditions of this place are somewhat peculiar,” wrote Donaldson in an 1898 letter, according to Knight. “It is the centre of a farming district, and also the focus of the great salmon canning industry. The settled population in my district is about 400, but in the fishing season it amounts to from 6,000 to 7,000 of all nationalities.”

“If we do not get an immediate and good replacement, our parish is in danger of falling apart. Even the old faithful workers are most discouraged,” according to a 1957 letter from parish leaders.

By the 1950s, the original church had fallen into disrepair and the parish had outgrown its space. In 1959 St. Anne’s moved to its current location on Francis Road at No. 1 Road.

A major renovation in the late-80s doubled the size of the building and added a four-column bell tower, housing a bell from an old Canadian Pacific Railways steam locomotive. The new space also provided new amenities — including a large kitchen perfect for baking pies. A few years—and many pies — later, the parish was out of debt, and members celebrated with a ceremonial burning of the mortgage.

Rev. Brian Vickers, pastor at St. Anne’s since 2009, said the church is now a multicultural community, whose members come from around the world.

“Community is big here. We throw that word out and use it quite easily, but this is such a harmonious community of people,” he said. “The sign out front says ‘welcoming and serving,’ and that certainly has been a part of St. Anne’s for a number of years.”

Today, the church draws up to 110 people to its two morning services and continues to serve in various ways, including working with the Richmond Food Bank to deliver lunches to students in need at the nearby high school, Hugh Boyd Secondary.

The original white church building in Steveston has long been gone, but some history remains in the current building, including stained glass windows, a baptismal font and a small brass cross dedicated to Donaldson, St. Anne’s first minister.

Later this year, on Oct. 23, parishioners will uncover more history when a time capsule, concealed in the alter 25 years ago, will be opened.

Have Stop Signs Become Just a Suggestion?

n West Vancouver, the south-west corner of the block on which sits a ‘hub’ supermarket in central Ambleside is a T-intersection with pedestrian crossings on all three branches of the ‘T’, each with a stop sign. The stop sign beside the west crosswalk has been decorated with flowers for almost a year.

When the flowers dry out they are replaced, but this remembrance site is now one big bouquet.

We are told that a beloved, long-time West Vancouver resident, who crossed every day with her dog was killed at the intersection when an elderly driver ‘blew’ through the stop sign, perhaps completely without seeing it. Perhaps the victim had checked before crossing. All it takes is a moment, though, a surprise, something extraordinary – a car that would be expected to stop, just kept rolling.

Not stopping at stop signs for whatever reason may no longer be extraordinary. It may even be a ‘new normal.’

A local north shore newspaper last week included in its “Grinding Gears” column the following about his regular walk with his daughter to her school during which they cross two four-way stop intersections: “I have been making this walk for several years, and I would like to report that the number [of people who come to a complete stop at the stop signs] is now up to a grand total of five.”

Road Rules has even written about Canadian jurisdictions that removed stop signs because too many drivers ignoring them was creating an obvious

safety hazard. You might want to investigate this yourself. Spend just five to ten minutes focusing on the driving activity around a stop sign intersection in your neighbourhood. Road Rules welcomes your report.

The apparent rise in drivers failing to obey stop signs was explored in a May 2010 essay in Slate magazine as follows: “it is a “minor indicator, among many, of a larger societal shift: a decline of civility and reciprocity, a lesser willingness to follow social rules… [in a] society marked by increased self-regard (and hence less regard for others), …[with] neither the inclination nor the situational awareness required to accommodate others, whether by signalling one’s intentions, stopping for pedestrians in a crosswalk, or heeding the familiar red octagon.”

Of course there are other explanations: we are always in a hurry, distracted by too many in-car devices and outside attention-grabbers. The sightlines along our well-maintained roads are clear: “We can clearly see that it is safe to proceed without the bother of stopping.”

Clearly, though, the law hasn’t changed: drivers must come to a full stop at a stop sign. This permits singular focus on the intersection activity and the pattern forming up for legal and safe execution of the fourway or two-way stop procedure. But if not stopping, intentionally or otherwise, is now standard behaviour, safety at stop sign intersections must be all about defensive walking, cycling, and driving behaviours: making eye contact; not making assumptions; not stepping in front of oncoming moving vehicles.

The lesson: Taking for granted that your fellow road users will comply with basic road rules seems increasingly perilous. Best not to.

he month of May is always such an exciting time for gardeners. Vegetable and flower seeds are planted. Tender plants are moved outdoors and lineups begin at our local nurseries.

Our fingernails are embedded with dirt and our knees are permanently callused and stained with delicious black soil.

Richmond Garden Club conducted a member survey recently to determine how people are gardening these days. Many of our members are living in multi-unit housing such as townhouses and condominiums.

According to the 2011 census, approximately 55 per cent of Richmond residents were living in multi unit housing.

That number has probably increased in the last five years. So, small space gardening has become a popular topic within the gardening community.

Another trend that is gaining momentum in our community is food security. We want to grow our own healthy fruits and vegetables that have not been contaminated with chemicals.

The joy of gardening does not have to disappear when living in townhouses or condominiums. The magic word is “vertical” — grow everything up! Vertical gardening gives the illusion of more space.

There is lot of produce that can be grown in pots these days — tomatoes, beans, peas, potatoes, raspberries, blackberries, salad veggies and so on.

Living in a townhouse allows a bit more space to incorporate raised garden beds. Not only do raised beds make it easier for some of us not-so-flexible

gardeners to get up and down but it’s also easier to control weeds. Some of our garden club members are quite creative in what they use to encourage plants to grow vertically.

There are some great finds at second hand stores, such as old fireplace screens, umbrella stands, large pots, baskets which you can use to create interest in your little garden. Small obelisks, bamboo stakes, even strong branches can be used to create your upright garden!

Richmond Garden Club members maintain a delightful little urban garden on the rooftop of the Richmond Cultural Centre. We seem to have a knack for finding these little gems in the middle of our concrete jungle here in Richmond.

This tiny little space up on the second floor of the cultural centre looks out at bricks and mortar. The most notable thing about this diminutive garden in the sky is how much produce has been planted in this confined space. Use of large steel containers, low garden beds and vertical plantings along the surrounding chain link fence should yield a good crop of vegetables and fruit in the fall.

So don’t be afraid to get out there and grow your favourite fruits and veggies. There is lots of help out there from your local nurseries and new products to assist you in creating a small space garden on your balcony, your patio or in your small yard. Pick up small raised bed containers, fill it with soil, plant some of your favourite veggie seeds or seedlings and you are off to the races!

Grade 6 DeBeck elementary student Matthew Li was categoric when asked to explain why he and his 30 or so fellow Me to We Club members chose to help six-year-old Joshua Weekes.

Li and the club — made up of Grade 6 and 7 kids at the school near No. 4 and Francis roads — decided, as part of their “making a difference locally” mandate, to run a button campaign for fellow DeBeck student Joshua, who is fighting a rare form of leukemia.

“We thought it was a good thing to do, as Joshua needs our help and he’s so young,” added Grade 7 student Brandon Young.

On their own, the club members personally designed and made 200 buttons, each with inspirational phrases and well-wishes tailored for little Joshua, who urgently needs a bone marrow donor.

“The buttons were on display throughout the week and when they went on sale, people were lined up out the door to buy them,” said proud DeBeck principal Larry Hurst on Friday.

“We asked a minimum donation of $3, but there were donations over that. We’re at $650 and rising.”

By the end of lunchtime, the club had raised $1,212.35, which will go directly to support Joshua’s family.

As well as doing the button drive for Joshua, DeBeck’s Me to We students have been running candy drives and toy drives for the food bank.

“Everyone has been so positive and everyone was smiling; the reaction has been way beyond normal,” said Grade 6/7 teacher Karishma Poonawala, who helps runs the club.

“It’s been a great teaching tool, in so much as getting students to think about others and giving up their own time.

“This group is so conscientious though, totally not self-involved and there are going to be some great leaders among them, I’m sure.”

DeBeck’s spring fair, on May 13 from 6 to 8:30 p.m., will also feature a “Jump for Josh” bouncy castle.

here are the pedals?”

It’s a question Barbara Alink gets all the time when she’s riding her specially designed bicycle that she feels has the power to change the world.

As an inventor, it’s a noble and lofty goal.

But it’s one she thinks is attainable.

She hopes her three-wheeled creation, the Alinker, will help people stay active, even into their golden years, and thereby lessen society’s increasing need for drug therapies to treat the results of declining mobility — illnesses such as diabetes are reaching epidemic proportions, especially in North America.

Oh, and when you’re active on the Alinker, you’ll also look cool.

“It has to be cool,” explained Alink, 52, who grew up in the Netherlands and in 2008 came to Richmond where she now lives and works out of a rented basement suite, sleep-

ing in a cramped closet space so she can use the small bedroom as her design studio.

“It has to be cool for people to become interested in it, want to use it and get over that stigma of having to use a device to remain mobile.”

The Alinker, with its bright yellow, curved tubular frame, somewhat resembles a scaled down version of a penny farthing, where the rider sits upright at standing height. It has three wheels — two at the front and a small one at the rear. Steering is done from a set of rectangular handlebars.

And, as mentioned earlier, there are no pedals.

Propulsion comes from the rider’s own two feet as they sit on the bike’s saddle and let their legs do the walking. All the while, the rider remains supported and stable, making the Alinker an alternative to a wheelchair, clumsy walking frame or cane.

“I very often wonder why no one else thought of it before. That’s how simple the idea is. However, the engineering wasn’t that easy.”

Alink can thank her mother, Antonia, for providing the inspiration for the Alinker.

On a trip to her homeland about four years ago, she saw the disdain Antonia had for canes and other walking devices during a trip to a local market.

“She saw some elderly people with walking canes and she said to me, ‘Over my dead body will I be using one of those.’”

At that time, her mother was 74 and had a hip replacement.

“She was starting to have some mobility challenges then,” Alink said. “And she

projected herself into the situation of those people she saw in the market.

“With her comment, I actually realized that mobility devices emphasize the disability.

And people suffer from that.”

Alink immediately felt that was not right.

“Why can we not have cool walking devices, something that actually supports the user, rather than a disabled body,” she said.

“If you look at people with current mobility devices, it quickly becomes clear that they (designers) have attempted to make solutions to physical problems. And they are not very practical, in many ways.”

Walking frames are a prime example.

From page 18 “You see people bent over, leaning all their weight on them,” Alink said. “And with what is called rollators, walking frames with wheels and a seat you can use to stop and sit down, it shows users want some support for their weight and some relief for their legs.”

The solution was the Alinker’s bicycle-style saddle which comfortably perches the user up at normal eye level so others don’t physically look down on someone in a wheelchair.

“There’s a real social awkwardness to that,”

Alink said. The Alinker “is a social equalizer, and it stands for a lot more. Like, I am more than the sum of my physical appearance.

“We miss a lot of human capacity if we judge just on the outside. Having lived 10 years overseas and having worked building schools in countries like Afghanistan, Ethiopia and Darfur, you realize the more you travel that we are all born as naked little creatures who just want to be happy.”

The lightbulb had gone off, thanks to Antonia, and the concept for the Alinker was born.

In the past four years, Alink has used her knowledge as a restoration architect, and her skills to repair bikes — which was one of her first jobs as a youngster in the town of Hengelo, near the eastern border with Germany — to produce the new device.

It’s been a labour of love as she developed seven prototypes with the help of Toby’s Cycle Works in east Vancouver before getting a Dutch bike seller to tweak its design and arrange a first run at manufacturing it in Taiwan.

Last May, the initial shipment of 200 Alinkers was released for test marketing in Holland, where the already bike-friendly populace took to it well.

“They say that the Netherlands is the best country to introduce a new product,” Alink said.

“That’s not because it’s easy. It’s because if you make it there, you can make it anywhere. The people are so set and stubborn in their ways.

“They cycle or they walk. So, the ones who did adopt them — we sold about 100 — the impact has been profound because you immediately change lives.”

Part of that is restoring dignity and respect for those who are disabled.

It’s a result Alink said her grandmother would be proud of, since it was a value she instilled in her granddaughter at a young age.

“My grandmother had one huge value and that was everybody deserves respect, regardless of

who you are, what you look like. That was something that was fed to me.

“I don’t even know what it’s like to feel more or less than somebody else. If you’re the president of a country or a poor woman in Afghanistan, if you’re a good human being, I respect that.”

Alink also sees her invention as a way of breaking open the discussion on aging and a general stubbornness for many to include themselves in the subject.

“I think mortality is a huge issue,” she said.

“As long as there is nothing wrong with us, we are ‘invincible.’ That’s how we operate as humans. Everyone else gets sick, not me. Everyone else will die, not me.

Everyone else might get homeless or disabled, not me.”

Alink said she’s no different. Her father died when she was eightyears-old and she noticed that people dismissed her, rather than talk about the discomfort of death.

“What the hell is wrong? Everybody is going to die. And dying actually makes our lives that much more valuable. That trauma confronts you and makes you think of spending the time we have right.

“So, for me, the death of my father has actually taught me how to live and the importance of living it well.”

Alink said the Alinker can help create awareness about that awkward subject and address the rise in diseases directly related to those brought on by decreased mobility.

According to the U.S. Centre for Disease Control (CDC), insufficient activity is the number one cause for half of the population diagnosed in the U.S. with diabetes.

Stats from the CDC also show a remarkable rise in cases.

From 1980 through 2014, the number of Americans with diagnosed diabetes has increased four-fold (from 5.5 million to 22 million).

And with one in three people in the U.S. being diagnosed with pre-diabetes, that’s a huge number who could potentially benefit from the Alinker.

It’s a similar case north of the border. The Canadian Diabetes Association estimated the number of diabetes cases is expected to rise by 44 per cent by 2025.

Health Canada states that Type 2 diabetes — a condition that develops later in life is one of the fastest growing diseases in the country with more than 60,000 new cases annually.

“The pharmaceutical companies may like that, but the insurance companies can’t provide that anymore,” Alink said.

“With 70 million baby boomers ramming into the healthcare system, we don’t have an option anymore. We need to take charge of our health. We need a paradigm shift.

“It comes down to how do you want to live?

That’s the crucial question. Do I want to depend on a medical system that cannot provide for me? Or can I make choices about what I eat and how much I move?

“I think that choice can be quite easy.”

Making choices for advancing her business and helping create a healthier population is what Alink is hoping to do this weekend while in Toronto, where she will be

under the glare of the TV studio lights filming an episode of CBC’s Dragon’s Den. There’s no guarantee she will draw the attention and dollars from the group of entrepreneur investors, or even if her segment will make it to air this fall.

But that hasn’t deterred Alink’s drive to bring her bike to the masses.

“It doesn’t have to be a business that makes a gazillion dollars,” she said. “It’s nice when it does that because you can start subsidizing people with lower incomes to get access to it.

“This is just a vehicle. It could have been another product and my philosophy about life would be the same.”

She’s also started to raise funds through Indiegogo, a crowdfunding website. And the Alinker is getting support through the Coast Capital Savings Innovation Hub at UBC, which is designed to draw together university resources, peer learning, and business networks.

But with all of that going for Alink and her invention, what does one of her harshest critics — her mother — think of the trike without pedals?

“She’s starting to use it now,” Alink said, adding she told her daughter she’s scared of falling like she did on her bike a while back.

“And she knows that at her age, 78, falling, you don’t always get back up again. Your recovery is harder.”

A short, strange tale of a republic

melia Island, Florida — Gregor McGregor helped Simón Bolívar wrest Venezuela from the Spanish. This gave him big ideas.

After Bolívar was proclaimed president of Venezuela in 1813, the ambitious Scot decided he wanted to rule his own country, too.

So he sailed for Florida.

“And he did have his own country. For a while,” says Steve Sansbury, Amelia Island historian and guide in the local historical museum.

It was a small country, admittedly: 20 kilometres long by three kilometres wide.

McGregor called it the Republic of the Floridas; today it’s known as Amelia Island, on the northeast coast of Florida, just south of the Georgia state line.

Sansbury points to a flag — a green cross on a white background — on the wall of the museum.

“That’s Gregor McGregor’s flag,” he says. “Or should I say Sir General Gregor McGregor?”

He was fond of titles, some of them selfbestowed. He had been a general, at 25, in Bolivar’s army, but the knighthood was entirely fictitious.

“McGregor arrived one June morning with 50 men” says Sansbury.

“But the Spanish, who had a garrison here, had been told that he had a thousand soldiers; they gave up without firing a shot.”

Just like that, McGregor had his own country. But it seems he soon got bored with it — and he ran out of money, so his men couldn’t be paid.

And he couldn’t control the pirates, who roamed Amelia Island at will. So, after a few months he took down his flag and left, “to become a corsair, which was a nice word for pirate,” Sansbury says.

To this day, Amelia Island thrives on its

piracy legacy. The gift shops are full of buccaneering tourist junk, and mannequins of pirates are all over the place.

At least when he was ruler of the Republic of the Floridas McGregor had a genuine piece of real estate. His next venture featured a fictitious land. He sailed for London, where he appeared in an extravagant uniform, calling himself the Cazique of Poyais and selling dreams of a nonexistent country in Central America.

For those buying in, “Poyais” was to be their Utopia, a place where they could make plenty of money without having to work, says Sansbury.

In Poyais, McGregor promised, he had established a capital city. All he needed now was people.

He sold bonds, commissions in the Poyaisian army, trade contracts and land lots to English and Scottish would-be emigrants, raising what would today be millions of dollars.

And so, in 1822, two ships departed from England, crowded with eager settlers. “But there was no Utopia. McGregor dumped them in the jungle,” says Sansbury.

Some made it back to England to blow the whistle, but the Cazique had skipped the country.

Not only was McGregor never brought to justice for either his Poyais fraud or his piracy but, after more buccaneering adventures, he asked for and, thanks to his previous service to Bolívar, was granted a pension in Venezuela, where he died, peacefully, in 1845, aged 59.

A ‘grape’ trip through the Loire Valley ERICHANSON Sips Happen

I

recently took a trip down the Loire Valley, thanks to Vins de Loire and Earl’s Kitchen and Bar in Yaletown. My mission, as if I didn’t want to accept it, was to taste 10 French wines and enjoy them with a delicious luncheon specially prepared for the event.

The valley is so close to Paris that it attracts many tourists who revel in its beautiful gardens, chateaux and castles.

The Loire River is the longest one in France, starting n near the Mediterran nean and flowing to th the north Atlantic.

Because of its le length, the Loire has th the most extensive vvineyards and the ggreatest diverssity of grapes of any F French region.

It is the third largeest wine producin ing region, the to top producer of n Cremant de Loire de AO AOC (Appellation Chanceny Brut Rosé d’Origine Controlee) white wines, and the second largest producer of AOC rosés and sparkling wines.

To begin the luncheon, we sipped the Cremant de Loire de Chanceny Brut Rosé

($24.95).

Produced from cabernet franc grapes, the salmon-coloured dry wine has delicious strawberries and red currants with those tiny bubbles. Cremant refers to sparkling wines produced in the traditional style of Champagne but are not from the Champagne region. The brut rosé was a great way to toast the special event and summer-like weather we’ve been enjoying.

If you love oysters on the half shell, then Muscadet is for you. Made from the melon grape, the Chateau de la Gravelle Muscadet Sevre et Maine Sur Lie ($15.99) is an affordable delicious example.

Produced near the mouth of the Loire near Nantes, it captures the essence of France’s Atlantic coast. It is light with a fragrance of pink grapefruit and minerals. The flavour is melony with a creamy texture due to the wine lying on the lees, the yeast sediment that falls to the bottom of the barrel.

There is a tangy, bone-dry finish with a hint of sparkle. Ideal with light seafood.

For the calamari appetizer, the Monmousseau Touraine Cuvée JM Brut 2011 (23.99) was a delightful match. It’s made in the Touraine region from Chenin blanc grapes, aged in the bottles for up to three years.

The bouquet is floral and has a chalk characteristic from the limestone soil it is grown in. The flavour is fresh from the natural acids with honey and a fine mousse. Perfecto with the squid!

The next wine, the Touraine Sauvignon Domaine ROC de Chateauvieux 2015 ($28.99) is made from Sauvignon blanc grapes. There is a gorgeous bouquet of passion fruit with

flint, minerals, and gooseberry in the flavour.

Besides going well with the calamari, the Chateauvieux would also work wonders with chèvre cheese, which the Loire is famous for.

rganizers with the Richmond Night Market are getting ready to kick off a new season with something very “old.” How about 200 million years old?

On May 13, opening night, the market debuts its theme for this year – Magical Dino Park – featuring a total of 18, life-sized, replica dinosaurs that are animated, roar and can even offer you a ride.

“I see you’ve seen our ‘toys,’” says Raymond Cheung, event organizer with the Richmond Night Market, when the News paid a visit on Wednesday afternoon. “They are pretty impressive.

“They move, they roar. Some of them can spit water out. They are very interactive. This will be the first time in B.C. that you will be able to see so many of this type of exhibit in one place,” Cheung said.

Cheung, who has run the night market for the past 15 years at various locations in Richmond, said the dinosaurs were designed and built specially for the market, which attracts an average of 10,000 visitors each night on Fridays and weekends from May until early October.

Asked how much was spent on getting a ferocious T-Rex, an assortment of raptors and more benign, yet massive herbivores to greet and entertain guests, Cheung quipped, “Too much!”

“Every year we try and come up with something different to keep things fresh for the people who come here. That’s why we went to the lengths of having these dinosaurs designed and made just for us,” he said. “We’re the biggest night market in the region and judging by our (attendance) numbers we’re big, rivaling the PNE.”

YVR celebrates new air link with London YVR celebrated a new connection with London, England when WestJet started its London-Gatwick service on May 6.

The non-stop service will operate six times a week throughout the summer season. WestJet will fly their Boeing 767-300 wide-body aircraft on the route, complete with a signature new maple leaf-themed tail on the aircraft, which offers seats for 262 guests, including its Plus cabin with premium seats for 24. The inaugural flight also marked the airline’s first flight to Europe.

On hand for the event were a number of dignitaries, including WestJet’s president and CEO Gregg Saretsky, B.C.s Minister of Jobs, Tourism, and Skills Training and Minister Responsible for Labour, Shirley Bond, and YVR’s president and CEO Craig Richmond.

“WestJet is now offering the public more choice for travel to the UK from Vancouver and, in turn, bringing more Brits to explore our city,” Richmond said.

My training since Flagstaff, Arizona had been really good. I was confident going into the race that I belonged in the lead group and that was exactly where I put myself, along with two of my teammates.

Unfortunately, a lot of people thought they belonged in that group and the pack during the first half of the race was the largest pack I’ve ever been in (50 people at 5 km), which on a narrow course with a lot of turns, made positioning pivotal.

With the early pace being fairly conservative, this wasn’t a costly move, but I could feel I was already near my limit. A move from the group came just after 10 km and I wasn’t able to respond, and lost contact.

Seeing my hopes of a top eight literally walk away from me left me feeling sorry for myself for about a kilometre before I switched to a team focus.

With Inaki Gomez and Ben Thorne still comfortably at the front, I knew I needed to catch as many of the stragglers ahead of me as I could.

In the second half of the race, I was able to limit how much I slowed down, which allowed me to catch a number of people. I moved from 26th at 10 km to finish 16th, a respectable result given my dissatisfaction with my race.

I knew I was capable of way more and I feel like it was a wasted opportunity to have that big breakthrough, but knowing I can have a mediocre race and finish in the top 16 gives me a lot of confidence moving forward, particularly in knowing that I belong in that lead group!

That was good enough for team silver, behind China, a mighty juggernaut in race walking.

That three guys from Vancouver could even compete with such a powerhouse shows the effect of what not putting limits on yourself can do. When Race Walk West (Gerry Dragomir’s club, where we all train) was formed, the mission statement was “complete world domination” and people thought we were a joke…

A

season long rivalry between the top two teams in the Metro Women’s Soccer League will have one final chapter on Sunday with a trip to nationals on the line.

Richmond FC and North Shore Renegades will square off in the Provincial Premier Cup championship game with little separating the juggernaut squads. The teams split three earlier meetings, including Richmond’s 2-1 win in the MWSL League Cup final back on April 4. A week later, the locals won a makeup game over Abbotsford to edge out North Shore for MWSL Premier Division honours.

Now, Richmond FC is 90 minutes away from completing the “treble” and earning the club’s first-ever trip to Canadian Senior Women’s Soccer Championships — slated for October in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

The Renegades are the defending provincial champions, having ended Surrey United’s remarkable 11-year reign. They were also Surrey’s biggest rival over the last few years and are led by former national team under 20 member Rheanne Sleiman who had 10 goals in regular season play.

“Overall, I kind of feel North Shore maybe a little bit beyond their prime and we are about to enter ours,” said Richmond FC coach Jim Caldwell of his younger squad. “They are an excellent team and it should be a great game. I know the girls have waited a long

time for this and are very excited to be in this position.”

The cup final will be played on turf at Westhills Stadium in Langford and that suits Caldwell just fine. His team is built on speed and thrives on a fast surface which compliments a potent transition game with plenty of pace in the attacking positions.

It was Richmond’s quickness that produced lots of scoring chances in its semi-final encounter with Coquitlam Metro Ford last Saturday at Minoru Park but the outcome wasn’t decided until the 86th minute. That’s when striker Caitlin Davie knocked in a rebound to end an afternoon of drama.

Davie had earlier hit the crossbar on a free kick and Richmond rattled the bar again on an uncontested header early in the second half. With extra time looming, the hosts finally broke through.

“I don’t think they had one good scoring chance which is a testament of how much we controlled the game,” added Caldwell. “I though their goalkeeper played very well and I don’t think the referee helped our cause either (by letting a lot of stuff go).

“Even though we missed a number of chances I thought it was only matter of time and was confident the game would be decided within the 90 minutes.”

It will be North Shore’s second straight trip to the Island. The Renegades took out Castaways Highlanders 2-1 in the other semi-final. They got past Surrey United 1-0 a week earlier.

U18 Islanders thrive on home field earning silver at RASA tournament U 18B Richmond Islanders thrived on home field at the Richmond Girls Softball Association Tournament at London Park, earning the silver medal.

The Islanders opened play Saturday by going 1-1-1 in round-robin play, with a win and a tie against Surrey Storm and Sooke Mavericks respectively, while falling to the Langley Xtreme. The girls then blanked the Prince George Thunderbirds 13-0 on Sunday morning behind the one hit pitching of Shelby Gingrich.

It was then onto the playoffs and Kylie Brind’s turn to shine in the pitching circle.

She recorded the shutout as Richmond rolled to an 8-0 victory in a rematch with

The championship game put the Islanders up against the pre-tournament favourite South Delta Invaders who are undefeated in Lower Mainland League play. Richmond more than held its own, dropping a tight 2-0 decision.

It was an encouraging performance that provides momentum as the season progresses.

Bombastic & Ex-Pats produce plenty of goals in RASA action A

Richmond Adult Soccer Association Summer League Division 2 match-up between Ex-Pats FC and Bombastic produced plenty of excitement and goals.

Bombastic struck first in the 10th minute at Holly Park on a goal by Joao Barao after EPFC goaltender Lloyd August made a save only to see Barao head home the rebound.

Shortly after, EPFC was awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area, but Bombastics goalkeeper Peter Mothe came up with a superb save.

Bombastic would extend the lead in the 40th minute on a goal by Mattia Nichele.

Almost straight after the kick-off, Bombastic struck again on a breakaway by Mark Twohig to give them a commanding 3-0 lead after 45 minutes.

The second half was a complete turnaround as EPFC came out determined to get back into the match.

Bombastics defence was hard pressed and, after 10 minutes, Barry Fitzpatrick gave EPFC the goal they needed to ignite their comeback. Five minutes later, Ondrej Relek flicked the ball over the keeper and suddenly it was a one goal game.

Bombastic were reeling and Mothe made a terrible tackle outside the penalty area which earned him a red card. Connor Inouye curled the free kick around the substitute goalie to tie game at 3-3 in the 75th minute.

However, Bombastic showed their resolve and they stormed right back with Jasmin Halaba converting a breakaway to make

it 4-3. EPFC pressed hard but Bombastic held on for their first win of the season.

Other RASA Division Two scores included: United Nations 3 Tanoa FC 1; All Blacks 4 Richmond B 2; Rino SC B 2 Snipers 1 and Graduates 2 South Delta 1.

In Division One play last Thursday, newcomers Campo Atletico took on Richmond FC at King George Park.

The game was fairly even with both teams enjoying scoring opportunities. After 15 minutes, Campo were awarded a penalty but Richmond goaltender Michael BranionCalles made a terrific save to keep the score level.

It wasn’t until the 35th minute when a poor clearance from a steady Campo defence dropped at the feet of Reese Branion who hammered the ball home to give Richmond a 1-0 lead, and it would stay that way into the second half.

Richmond gave themselves a comfortable 2-0 lead in the 60th minute when Obie Yeboah headed home a cross from the left win.

Campo were not going down without a fight and five minutes later, Victor Da Souza scored on a breakaway to make 2-1. This seemed to spur Campo on and in the 75th minute Edson Castro headed home the equalizer from a corner kick. Campo kept pushing for the winner but Branion-Calles was brilliant in net for Richmond.

Other Divison one scores from week two included: Delta Blaze 1 Bingers Army 0 and Rino SC A 3 Westside FC 0.

Predeceased by her Mother, Marion Solbrekken, Mother in law, Bruna Defend, and Grandson, Daniel Defend. She is survived by and will be greatly missed by her loving family - Husband Daniel Defend, Daughter Jennifer Stare (Ryan), Son Christopher Folk (Jill), Stepsons Adrian Defend (Bobbi), Dustin Defend (Sam), Grandchildren Sophie, Grace, Hope and Mason, Father Fredrik Solbrekken, Step Mother Irene Solbrekken, Sisters Karen (Scott), Sandra (Ed), Brothers Jim (Helga), Dan (Shirl), Doug (Karen), Sister in law Louise (Tony), Brother in law Paul (Lorraine). Born in Cumberland County, nova scotia; passed away in richmond, BC at age 94.

Carman was the youngest of seven children of George teed and amelia (nee Patriquin) teed. He was predeceased by his only child Catharine Blanco in 1991 and his wife Marjorie (nee Harris) in 2015. left remembering his stamina and infinite knowledge of how anything mechanical worked are his family in eastern Canada, colleagues and friends. a proud veteran of the rCaF, he served in the medical core in eastern Canada from 1942-1945.

Carman was always amazed that he’d had the courage in 1956 to pack up and set out west looking for more opportunity. His instinct was right, as he found employment in aviation immediately with Q.C.a./P.W.a. in White Horse. By 1957 he came back to the lower mainland and working for transCanada airlines/air Canada. He was able to have Marjorie and Cathy soon join him and eventually settled in richmond. along the way he earned his Private Pilot’s license with float and night endorsements. after Cathy’s passing, Carman and Marjorie travelled and particularly liked cruising. after retirement in 1980 the restoration of a VW van and a 1947 luscombe kept him busy. a Memorial service will be held Friday, May 20, 2016 at 3:00 pm at the richmond Funeral Home, 8420 Cambie road, richmond. in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carman’s memory to the richmond Hospital Foundation.

Born in Vancouver, BC Bob served his country enlisting in the Merchant Navy at the age of 15. At the end of the war he began a successful fishing career and he and his wife, Joy, settled in Powell River to raise their family. Bob loved his children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. He was always ready to lend a helping hand when needed. His kindness and warmth made him a favourite to all. We will all miss his big hugs and warm smile.
