ACE THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR WITH SYLVAN

n Wednesday’s paper, we had a story about some dedicated parents at Woodward elementary, desperately trying to save their school. Woodward is on the list of 16 schools the district is considering closing by September 2017.

In today’s paper, we learn about another dedicated bunch from another possibly doomed elementary (Bridge) making their pitch to the school board.

Next week, I’m sure we’ll see more parents from more schools pleading their case.

A common refrain in these pleas is the fact the school is a community hub. The Woodward parents talked about the walking path and playground that are used by many in the neighbourhood beyond the students — much like Rideau Park playgound.

Rideau elementary was closed in 2003, but the playground remained a gathering place for over a decade. However, time took its toll and with no school PAC to help raise funds to maintain it, and a district fearing liability, in September it was largely dismantalled. Letters were written, petitions signed and meetings held, but the site now stands rather desolate.

It’s not surprising the school district doesn’t want to invest in a playground of a closed school. (Although it continues to be used for continuing education.) The city says there’s little it can do as it doesn’t own the land. It may consider buying the land, or building a playground on nearby property it does own, but currently that’s not in the budget.

While both sound reasonable, what should not be lost sight of is the fact this is public land. And it can only stay that way if the city and school district don’t get into a squable as they did with the Steveston secondary site sell off. In that case, the district put the land up for sale with the condition it be sold to a public entity. At the time, it was recognized land prices were soaring and if the property left the public trust, it would be gone for good; governments and non-profit groups can’t compete with land speculators.

The city claimed it wanted the land, but the two got into a battle over the total cost. After a protracted stalemate, the district eventually sold the land to a private developer, and now we have another shiny new complex of 133 luxury townhouses. Granted, the school district got a pretty penny and the city negotiated a few public perks, such as a daycare and a couple of walking paths in exchange for rezoning.

But, really, that’s a drop in the bucket given the amount of land that was there.

The point here is not to rehash old feuds, rather it’s to take heed as we move forward.

Closing five schools will leave a lot of public land and abandoned playgrounds to fight over. Rideau Park and Steveston are not examples we want to follow.

We are writing to you as parent of our daughter who currently attends Montessori at McKinney elementary.

The foundation of our child’s success has been the teachers and program at McKinney, and its location.

Twelve years ago we bought into the neighbourhood because of the school, as did many parents whose children attend Mckinney.

Through the years, we have seen the neighbourhood grow, and surroundings expand with real estate development that shall definitely bring in more neighbourhood children. he school itself has beautiful green space and a park, where the children can enjoy their outdoors in a safe zone away from traffic, this is becoming increasingly rare in Richmond because of the exploding development.

This green space would be difficult to obtain for any new school being thought of in the “New Density Area of Richmond.”

As a community, we would definitely oppose closing one school to open another in a more “popular area.”

the school board is trying to follow blindly without question, is simply a numbers game, as we all know well enough that if we achieve that target it would violate class size, as well as result in overcrowding in non classroom areas. I ask, does the rest of our provincial government occupy and function at 95 per cent efficiency?

As a taxpayer it is offensive to listen to this numbers game applied to our children’s education and a gamble with seismic upgrades. What happened to the taxpayer-funded upgrades that were supposed to have been completed over the last 20 years? It sounds like hostage taking rather than education policy.

In conclusion, please pass on the fact to the school board that the genuine taxpayers of the McKinney neighbourhood are not naïve enough to believe the social injustice that is occurring and being masked as re-structing the education needs of Richmond.

Dear Editor, I work near Rona (Alderbridge and Elmbridge) and am fortunate enough to bring my dog to work. At lunch I like to get out and walk her around the block.

I am new to working in this area and I must say that downtown Richmond is filthy. In addition to all the litter, rabbit droppings, bird waste, and goose dung, there are cigarette butts absolutely everywhere. I’ve concluded that it must be the “new thing” to walk

away from your dog’s business (I’m running out of synonyms). From the office where I work, I have witnessed many people either not pick up after their dog, or use a bag, only to throw it in a nearby bush (there are flies everywhere — a real puzzle).

The dog park is a nice feature of the area... if you like giving your dog a bath after. If, by some miracle, you or your pet has avoided stepping in feces walking to the park, it is inevitable

that both of you will step in it within the fenced-off area.

I am becoming exceedingly frustrated with the apparent lack of pride in this neighbourhood.

More garbage cans in the area would definitely help as would more education and greater bylaw enforcement.

With new apartment buildings going up on every corner, it will only get worse.

Or should I say dirtier.

Car-free days over big bridge Dear Editor, In Sao Paolo, Brazil, on weekday evenings, Saturday afternoons and Sunday all day, several kilometres of a major highway in the city centre is closed to cars and open to pedestrians and cyclists. In October 2015, Paris experienced a car-free day and citizens were exhilirated. While I was still living in Italy, the city of Florence instituted a car-free Sunday, and for the first time many people were able to walk in

the streets and look at the sights that made the city world famous. Several Italian cities also had alternate car days, decided by the odd or even final digit of licence plates. These events happened because the city officials admitted that pollution (air and noise) had risen to dangerous levels.

The pollution in Richmond is getting worse all the time.

The number of cars on the road is rising vertiginously, and yet one of the big con-

cerns remains how to facilitate traffic by building more roads and bigger bridges.

Perhaps it’s time to look at what other cities in the world are doing and follow their lead, beginning with car-free days in the centre of Richmond and — why not — alternate car days.

Who can argue that what’s good for the legs is good for the lungs? And let’s add — car-free is care-free.

Wat should read her oath Dear Editor, Recently, I sent a letter to Teresa Wat, MLA for Richmond Centre. The letter opposed replacing the Massey Tunnel with a 10lane bridge. I also asked for Wat’s position on the issue.

Her office replied that Wat is prevented by law to answer my question because I am not one of her constituents.

Prevented by law? What law, I asked? It has been two months, I am still waiting for a response. It is shocking. Teresa Wat does not understand our system of representation and fails to understand her job. MLAs are elected in a local constituency but once elected they

are to serve all citizens, not just those who vote Liberal, not just those within one constituency, but all British Columbians. Wat needs to read her oath of office. It does not stop at Richmond Centre. Whenever she participates in the legislature on budget and revenue measures, she reaches into the pockets of all British Columbians. Whenever she votes on any measure, all people are affected. The lawmakers of B.C. have a responsibility to all citizens of BC. Our system of government has been carefully honed over centuries to ensure the common good is served. If due process is not pre-

served, tended and nurtured, we will create a polarized situation with one region fighting another, friends rewarded, enemies punished and the breakdown of the rule of law.

Canada offers civility, respect and a deep regard for the common good. Such values do not drop out of the blue. They are sustained by finely-tuned democratic structures. We should fear the consequences if those structures are not maintained, respected, and observed. Or, just as likely, neglected from inexperience.

Loo's jet fuel optimism naive Dear Editor, The City of Richmond Mayor, who is a very experienced politician, with many years of public service, says “no” to a jet fuel tank farm sitting next to the Fraser River.

Richmond MP Joe Peschisolido is another experienced politician, who warns of the negative effects of this project.

There are seismic concerns

and no fire suppresion.

Coun. Alexa Loo notes there are “good parts” of this deal, and that would be jobs.

She also suggest it’s a done deal so we should make the best of it. This shows her rookie standing as a councillor and indicates, perhaps, the learning curve may be too steep for her.

This tank farm is an

environmental time bomb, as well as a very dangerous threat to the public with huge tankers navigating the river and off-loading this toxic and explosive substance. Loo’s overly simplistic look at the “good parts” still won’t make lemonade out of these jet fuel lemons.

egistered Block Watch captains were recently surveyed by the City of Richmond to determine current participation and engagement levels.

The results showed just 35 per cent of the captains returned survey forms, according to a report to city council from Ed Warzel, manager of RCMP Administration.

Despite the low response rate, Warzel stated that the Block Watch program is growing and presently there are 415 neighbourhood groups and 9,730 registered participants, including 543 captains and co-captains.

The report outlined results of the survey, which are intended to serve as information for an ongoing review of the program.

Councillors had asked

for a review following a spike in property crime in 2014 and concerns from residents that the Block Watch program lacked leadership and direction.

Warzel notes the program is, in fact, run by the city with help from the Richmond RCMP. There are two municipal Block Watch positions.

However, both of them are being staffed by reassigned and temporary city workers. Warzel said the city will be hiring a permanent coordinator and assistant coordinator.

He maintained the city is looking at how it can strengthen participation in the program.

Nearly all Block Watch respondents are home owners and most are married with children living in detached homes.

Two-thirds of them indicated they’d like to see more communication from the city and police.

In fact, Environment Canada and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans provided advice for an environmental assessment certificate issued by the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office. Although neither entity was a responsible authority in the process, as they have been in the past.

It’s a looming health crisis. A disease you can live with because it starts off with minimal to no symptoms. But silently, it progresses until it gets worse and then you experience your first heart attack or your first stroke. Or blindness. Or kidney failure. Diabetes is a chronic disease and it’s growing at an alarming pace. In 20 years, diabetes will be one of our biggest health care burdens as it grows to become the number one killer on the planet.

Dr. David E. Harris is an endocrinology and metabolism specialist with his primary focus on diabetes and obesity, and he’s made it his mission to champion a new era of diabetes care here, overseeing Richmond Hospital’s largest chronic disease clinic, with patients from across Richmond, south Vancouver, North Surrey and Delta and providing care and services in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.

He’s also addressing diabetes with his team of researchers, conducting research funded in part by donors in our community for our community. Interestingly, our rich diversity provides us with a unique opportunity to acquire knowledge right here at home to help our local population.

Here is Dr. Harris: “Richmond is still noted as the healthiest city in Canada for its diabetes rate, which is interesting because a lot of people have suggested that that’s because of the immigrant population in our city, who tend to have healthy habits when they arrive. Even though our track record is good, things are progressing in the wrong direction.”

“Richmond’s rate of increase for diabetes is one of the highest in Canada, which is only surpassed only by First Nations communities and remote communities. At this rate, we will catch up with Alberta and Ontario in the next five to 10 years.”

“A lot of the Chinese population we have in Richmond who had immigrated 20 to 30 years ago are getting diabetes. It’s a bit of ticking time bomb. Chinese people may be carrying a genetic risk that we need to address.

“What we’ve observed is that the Chinese population is not overly obese compared to other ethnicities, but they are still getting diabetes. There is new thinking that our Chinese population is getting diabetes with a normal body weight. And when people adopt a Western diet, it appears even faster. The insulin reserve in

their body is depleted much quicker than normal.

Dr. David E. Harris “The Chinese population is not acquiring diabetes in the traditional ways that Caucasian, Black or Hispanic populations do. Because of that, we’re learning to treat patients differently. Sometimes that means we need to use different medications than we would use for a patient who’s Caucasian in the beginning of therapy”.

“Research is important because we’re trying to prevent disease before it happens.

If we address it early enough, we can prevent things from occurring that kill people, such as heart attacks, strokes, infections…I can’t tell you how lifechanging it is when someone loses their eyesight. We want to prevent that tragedy.

“So, we are undertaking a number of research studies right here in Richmond.

One is a dietary study for the Chinese population. We had a lot of people asking for strategies to allow them to eat traditional foods in a healthy manner, and we are providing culturally appropriate Cantonese and Mandarin cooking classes in a research setting to help them control their diabetes.

“Often it’s challenging to get patients to enrol in research studies. But it’s crucial that we do. We’re expanding the knowledge for the health care of the Chinese population. We have to learn how best to treat our citizens. Research allows us to do that and we’re grateful to donors for helping us expand this knowledge.

“This will mean we can incorporate our findings into the care and treatments we provide our patients. We want to change the future.”

he provincial government is stepping up measures to tackle money laundering and illegal gambling in B.C.’s gaming facilities and it could have financial consequences for the City of Richmond’s bottom line.

The formation of the new Joint Illegal Gaming Investigation Team was announced

by Michael de Jong, B.C.’s Finance Minister, Mike Morris, Solicitor-General and Kevin Hackett, chief operating officer of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of B.C. earlier this month.

“This is an important public safety initiative that will help preserve the integrity of the B.C. gaming industry by targeting and disrupting top-tier organized crime and gang involvement in illegal gaming, and prevent criminal attempts to legalize the proceeds of crime through gaming facilities,”said Morris.

The Ministry of Finance noted it will step up its reporting and analysis of suspicious transactions. However, it appears as though some

In February, a preliminary financial report to Richmond city council’s finance committee revealed about a seven per cent decline in its shared revenue from the River Rock Casino and Resort (from $21 million in 2014 to $19.5 million in 2015).

The report noted that the decline is likely a result of the BC Lottery Corporation introducing additional conditions for certain VIP players, including a requirement to demonstrate the source of funds to purchase chips.

Over the last 12 months, River Rock’s overall revenues were negatively affected by those additional requirements, said the report, to the tune of around $20 million. n Helping people to party

The Canada 150 Community Celebration Grant program is “envisioned to help small, Richmond-based, non-profit organizations, community associations and Richmond neighbourhood groups plan and execute activities and events,” noted a report from Jane Fernyhough, the city’s director of arts, culture and heritage services.

Examples of such activities include neighbourhood block parties, neighbourhood clean-ups, community festivals, organized picnics, sporting events (fun runs or a sports day) and community art projects.

n More than 300 cards and counting have been delivered to the Richmond School Board asking it to save William Bridge elementary school from closure. The ‘I Love Bridge’ cards were signed by students and parents and delivered by members of the Parents Advisory Council. Bridge is one of 16 schools that could close. The board must close schools because the Ministry of Education will not perform seismic upgrades until the school district reaches 95 per cent capacity. The district will have met committees from all schools by this Monday’s board meeting, where the pending school closures will be discussed; the public is invited. he Richmond School Board has called on the federal government to reverse funding cuts to social services for immigrants and the City of Richmond is lending its voice of support.

In late February, board chair Debbie Tablotney wrote to Hon. John McCallum, the Minister of Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada to note that the government had pulled back almost $200,000 in funding for Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) over the past three years, which includes cuts of 8.5 per cent, or $95,000, planned for the next school year.

The SWIS program provides settlement services such as orientation events, needs assessments and referrals, information sessions and community connections to children, families and adults, noted Tablotney.

“This support is vital because education is the key for children and their families to become contributing residents of Canada,” she noted, citing concerns that without the initial level of funding that such services could “draw upon” K-12 educational funds.

On Monday, city council approved a letter of support for the SWIS program.

“The importance of the settlement process in communities with high levels of newcomers such as Richmond cannot be overemphasized,” stated Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

he Liberal Party of Canada’s website www.liberal.ca includes among the many various topics in its platform the promise to “legalize, regulate, and restrict access to marijuana.” The reason for this promise, it says, is because the current system of marijuana prohibition does not work: it criminalizes too many Canadians for minor non-violent offences; it finances the more threatening activities of organized crime; and it has failed to “keep marijuana out of the hands of children.”

Marijuana consumption and incidental possession will, presumably, no longer be sanctioned under the Criminal Code of Canada. New ‘stronger’ laws are promised, however, that will more severely punish “those who provide it to minors,” those who sell it outside of the “new regulatory framework,” and, of special note to Road Rules, “those who operate a motor vehicle while under its influence.”

At the time of writing, the program to stop marijuanaintoxicated individuals from driving remains unclear.

Nevertheless, last week, Canada’s health minister told the United Nations at a special session of the General Assembly in New York that the promised legislation will be introduced in spring 2017 explaining, “It’s a great deal of work. It’s important to do it right.”

Colorado is the one jurisdiction in North America that has legalized marijuana use and possession by adults since November 2012. As in all other US states and in Canada, driving while impaired by any drug is illegal in Colorado, but the perceived necessity to more

precisely define and measure marijuana impairment resulted in six attempts over the course of three years for the Colorado legislature to draft specific marijuana intoxication language satisfactory to both political parties.

Ultimately, the Colorado legislators decided that juries may convict a person of marijuana intoxication if they have five or more nanograms of active tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) per milliliter of blood. Accused drivers reportedly can still rebut the presumption of intoxication at this level. The police, on the other hand, can legally arrest for observed impairment whether or not the prescribed level has been measured. While debate about Colorado’s legally defined metric remains ongoing, the latest research on the negative effect of marijuana on drivers clearly shows an increase in lane weaving and poor reaction time and attention to the road. And no surprise, alcohol with marijuana compounds the impairment.

The experience of Colorado law enforcement with marijuana legalization will no doubt become increasingly studied in other jurisdictions contemplating similar legislative change. Speaking recently at the International Conference on Urban Traffic Safety in Edmonton, Lt. Col. Kevin Eldridge, Colorado State Patrol said Canadian police agencies will be left scrambling if they fail to develop new officer training and enforcement policies well before legalization is adopted.

“There were several different policies we had to change,” Lt. Col Eldridge said. “When they legalized, everyone focused on this one aspect, smoking marijuana is legal. But officer hiring, employment, and evidence — there were many different aspects that we really didn’t think about as much as we should have before implementation.” The upshot of all this is that detecting marijuana intoxicated drivers remains one of the biggest challenges for Colorado police officers.

Recounting Richmond's history of 'royal affairs' MATTHOEKSTRA Contributor

ichmond was on the doorstep of a historic royal occasion last week. Just a half hour away, thousands of well-wishers lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the Queen on her 90th birthday.

Alas, her Majesty’s April 21 birthday walk was near Richmond, England — but our Richmond, B.C. has had its own affairs with royalty, including Queen Elizabeth II herself.

Seven years into her reign, the fresh-faced Queen of Canada arrived here to officially open a major transportation link the province now wants to decommission.

With husband Prince Philip in tow, the Queen “graciously opened” the George Massey Tunnel on July 15, 1959, according to records. The Queen would return for B.C.’s Centennial celebrations in 1971 — but the airport was likely her only Richmond

Other royals have also come and gone from the Sea Island airport. But few have actually set foot on Lulu Island. The nobles who did weren’t here just for the Dairy Queen.

In April 2001 Edward, Duke of Kent, visited Steveston thanks to the efforts of longtime local maritime artist John Horton. As president of the Canadian Lifeboat Institution, Horton arranged for the purchase of a search-andrescue boat from England to patrol the Fraser River. He discovered the Duke had been on board that same vessel for its original launch.

When the vessel arrived here, Horton asked the Duke to come to Steveston and rededicate the craft for Canadian service. The Duke accepted. As part of the visit, Horton brought the Queen’s cousin to Steveston for a tour

“We gave him a full tour of the channel, told him where all the canneries used to be, who was there and how much fish was caught... He was very interested in the whole story,” said Horton.

“He was very charming. We basically lived with him for four days. We booked into the same hotel so we were there with him.”

The vessel rededicated by the Duke now sits idle, while Horton is raising funds to complete the restoration of the Steveston Lifeboat, his own search-and-rescue boat badly damaged in a 2014 storm.

Another link to Canada’s Monarchy visited Richmond during the 2010 Winter Games. Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex — a son of the Queen — graced the Richmond Olympic Oval during the Olympics.

Super jumbo touches down: Sunday May 1: Plane spotters will not want to miss the touch down of a really big bird Sunday when British Airways begins its new daily service featuring the double-decker A380 super jumbo. The event will mark the first regularly scheduled A380 service for Vancouver and will be the only scheduled A380 service in all of western Canada.

Nine years ago, Airbus first brought the 469-passenger behemoth to YVR as part of its test flight schedule. The largest commercial airliner in the sky, British Airways’ A380 features a first class cabin with 14 luxurious suites.

his is a story about a 96-year-old man, his giant, 25-year-old clematis and a 104-year-old water pump.

First, the man, John Ross, and his garden, in a quiet cul-de-sac in St. Vincent’s Place, just southwest of

Williams Road and Railway Avenue.

Ross — some might recognize his name, being the founder of Vancouverbased John Ross Insurance Services — has lived in his single-family home in Richmond with his wife, Helene,

He was born and brought up in a small town called Malakwa, near Revelstoke in the B.C. Interior, spent many years travelling Canada (his father was a CPR foreman) and Europe with his family and eventually found his way to Vancouver more than 40 years ago.

Despite his advancing years, Ross is still driving, having passed his test again in August, 2014, 72 years after passing it the first time around.

“I think it’s good family genes and plenty of Scotch,” Ross said of his longevity, citing that his grandmother lived to 104. “My memory goes back to two-years-old.”

Now, the clematis. It’s more than 10-feet tall, 16feet wide and has been Ross’ pride and joy for more than 25 years.

“I don’t do anything special with it; I just read the instructions,” smiled Ross, who has 15 other, smaller clematis on his property, and grows giant tomatoes, as well.

“It doesn’t need too much water, just gentle watering and I throw a little manure on there maybe once a year.”

The water pump. It “grew up” in Ross’ home town of Malakwa and, said Ross, was “Mary Barnes’ pump.”

“I was up there visiting in 1955 and I saw this pump sitting there. I asked her, ‘what are you doing with that pump?’

“So I hacked it off and it lay in storage until we moved to Richmond. It would have been used to pump water from a well into the house.”

So, that’s how a 96-year-old man brought a 25-year-old clematis and a 104-year-old water pump, from a tiny town in rural B.C., to meet each other in the same garden in Richmond.

Here are a few ideas for spending time with the best lady on Earth in Richmond. z Outdoor adventure With Richmond being an island city, surrounded by the Fraser River, there are plenty of opportunities to get outside and enjoy the fresh air, especially if the weather is favourable. You can walk or bike up and down the West Dyke Trail and land at Terra Nova and pop by the Sharing Farm to see what’s growing, or spend some time at the Terra Nova Adventure Playground (challenge mom on the zip line). If you really give a “hoot” about your mom, perhaps take her to the Richmond Nature Park where there will be an owl and hawk show from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show is presented by Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society and proceeds go back into educational programs. ith more than 200 people on its email list and boasting 600 “likes” on its Facebook page, the Steveston Moms Network grows stronger with every passing month.

Another sold-out event is coming up in a few weeks and in need of a bigger hosting space, the network of mostly professional, working moms – an online group offering connections and social opportunities – has doubled in size in the third of its three-year lifespan.

Case in point, the Steveston Moms Sweaty Night Out – an evening of serious and fun working out at a newly renovated studio – was quickly sold out.

“There’s a local female entrepreneur who we want to support; she’s just opened up new space on London Road,” said Jen Schaeffers, co-founder of the Steveston Moms Network, referring to True Conditioning.

“Some women may be a little intimidated by the whole TRX (training) thing,

so we thought it’d be a good idea to get a group of moms into a beginner’s class. I think we’re going to have another (different) event in June, so stay tuned to our Facebook page.”

As well as supporting the renovated fitness studio, the network will also promote during the “Sweaty Night Out” two other local businesses.

“We’re always looking to support local businesses when we can,” added Schaeffers.

As for looking for new space to host future events, Schaeffers explained how their former Steveston Community Centre venue is no longer available to them.

“We’re currently looking around, but we likely won’t need somewhere until later this year or even next year,” she added.

wo worlds collided at the Maples Residences on April 26, but we all emerged relatively unscathed. In fact, I’d say most of us walked away a little wiser.

Thirty elementary school youngsters aged 11 and 12, arrived to interview seniors with a view to writing their biography. Two students per senior — one to interview and the other to record. I was assigned Eric, an identical twin, and Liam, the eldest of three siblings. I think we were all a little nervous.

Since a biography is a chronological record of a person’s life, they looked at their list of questions and started with where were you born and what year? Did you go to school? Did you like your teachers?

And, topically, were you ever bullied? No, I wasn’t, were they? No. And, generally, what was your childhood like?

As my age group lived during the Depression and didn’t have much, the youngsters were shocked that we cut soles out of cardboard to cover the holes in our shoes and when the cardboard got wet it squished and tried to fall out of the holes. I was asked why I didn’t get new shoes. Not being able to afford them was inconceivable.

Moving right along, the next set of questions was about jobs. What was my first job? It was at the Empress Jam Factory at 37 cents an hour when I was 14-years-old.

A far cry from kids receiving up to $20 weekly for spending money nowadays.

Also, when I was younger than my interviewers, my sister and I picked blackberries in season and sold them for four cents a box at the corner vegetable store. And we asked the butcher for dog bones for our dog (which we didn’t have) so mum could make soup.

When the recording Ipad needed resetting, it became clear to me that these kids and I weren’t only ages apart, we were worlds apart. They were born into an electronically controlled world, whereas I could remember our first radio and the first biplane flying overhead in Victoria when I was about their age. Everyone ran outside to watch the plane. Now we don’t even duck when a huge jet flies low over our heads. Their age group texts and ours heads for the phone for messaging.

Another question which required reminiscing was what event had the most impact on me as a child. After much thought, I decided it was when I was 16 and lying in the sun at English Bay and a newsboy See Interview page 21

The other most memorable event was at the Main Post Office, which is now the Sinclair Centre. Hungry men, who offered to fix a roof or mend a fence just for something to eat, were “sitting in” in protest at the Post Office.

My mother and I stepped between their feet as the

police were hauling them off. The same men, many of whom lost their lives in WW2, ran to join the army as soon as war was declared.

Eventually, we neared the end of the interview and the questions became quite meaty. For instance, they asked what advice I would give about marriage.

I replied that, since I was divorced, I wouldn’t give any good advice.

They asked, if I had my

life to live over again, would I change anything? Yes, a bundle of things. And what did you do that made you the proudest? That was the easiest question of all. With no hesitation at all, it was that I raised four, honest, caring, thoughtful daughters, who respected other people and their property.

I think the session was enlightening for the youngsters, and it was certainly a trip down memory lane for the seniors.

Heritage fair steps back in time

C

anada’s interesting and exciting past as seen through the eyes of Richmond’s youth will be the focus of the annual Richmond Regional Heritage Fair on May 7.

Visitors to the fair at the Richmond Cultural Centre will be able to explore themes that range from prominent Canadians, such as Emily Carr and Alexander Graham Bell, to significant events like the Komagata Maru and historic places such as Barkerville.

More than 100 family-friendly projects will be on display at this year’s annual Richmond Regional Heritage Fair. The free, community-based celebration runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and is presented by the Richmond Museum Society.

Many of the projects offer an opportunity to stir curiosity and interest in Canada’s diverse history and heritage.

These include returning favourites such as First Nations educator Roberta Price and her Medicine Pouch Teachings

The City of Richmond and its community association partners are hosting more than a dozen events for youth ages 13-18 across Richmond, from Steveston to Hamilton and various locations in between.

The News lifts the lid on little known society as it prepares to host its 55th annual show this weekend

p a winding staircase, a left turn, then a right, down to the end of a hallway, chatter and ripples of laughter filtered out the door of the lapidary studio.

If you’re a numbers kind of person, clustered at the far end of the room were eight members of a 100-strong, 58-year-old society, surrounded by millions — make that billions — of years’ worth of semi-precious, and not so special, stones, gems and minerals of all shapes, sizes and colour.

Just what mused the Richmond Gem & Mineral Society clan gathered on the first floor of the arts and cultural centre on Minoru Gate was anybody’s guess.

It could’ve been the colour of the Richmond News reporter’s tie or the title of the organization’s annual show this weekend – 55 Shades of Turquoise, unashamedly scalped from the title of the 2011 erotic romance novel and subsequent 2015 movie 55 Shades of Grey.

The only difference — well, you’ll be glad to know there’s a plethora of differences between the raunchy movie and the gem show — is the number, 55, not 50, due to the fact it’s the non-profit society’s 55th annual, and the featured colour of gemstones on show, turquoise, not grey, representing the themed shade for the event.

“It’s great; we’re hoping it gets people’s attention and you’ll certainly see many different shades of turquoise on show,” laughed Darlene Howe, a member of 10 years, when asked about the naming of this year’s show, being held at the Richmond Cultural Centre Saturday and Sunday, April 30 and May 1.

“One of our members, Lisa Kew, came up with the name.”

This year’s show, expected to attract more than 1,000 visitors, is packed full, say the members, of demonstrations on stone polishing and beading, activities for all ages, mini

educational seminars (including gemstone identification), prizes, silent auction and, of course, dozens of vendors displaying their fabulous collections of “rock candy.”

One might ask, just how interesting can old relics — the rocks, not the members, who range in age from seven to 97 — be and what do the society’s members really get up to at their twice weekly, six-hour sessions in the lapidary (explanation to come later) studio? They can’t just be comparing stones, right?

“It’s a very social group; and not everybody collects rocks,” said society president George Howe, who’s been with the group for 10 years.

“It starts out that way, then you find out all the great things that you can do at this club.

We pass on our rocks, trade them, sell them or keep for our own collections.”

For a start, there’s wire-wrapping, said Howe, silver-smithing and lost wax casting, which has nothing to do with finding actors for a movie about missing candles.

One of the society’s newest members, Karen, who joined last August when she retired, said she’d wanted to get into the hobby ever since she was a young girl, collecting rocks along a railway track in Manitoba.

“When I travel around the province now, I can’t help but pick up rocks, I just love doing it,” she said.

If you can’t make the show, which runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, the group meets every Tuesday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and some Sundays and evenings.

As you can imagine, with me heading to Mexico midway through the fitness challenge, the office was all abuzz.

“Oh man, Mongoose is going to put on 10 pounds at the beach,” chirped one co-worker. “Enjoy the free beers Rob, I know I would,” quipped my competition, Collin “Apres Ski” Neal.

These comments were not without logic. How could I possibly not partake in my fair share of Pina Coladas and Chunky Monkey while in paradise? It’s 30 degrees out, sun, sand and surf, who wouldn’t want to indulge a little, be it a margarita or a few cervezas?

Even A.J. told me with conviction before I left, “enjoy your vacation because once you’re back the real work begins.”

Real work, I thought.

What have we been doing all this time if the real work hasn’t begun? I was beginning to empathize with how the family dog must feel the last weekend before he’s taken in for the old snip, snip.

Better enjoy myself I guess.

Fortunately, the hotel gym was up to snuff and my wife, Richelle, and I, while not the type to head out to the gym while on vacation, hit the gym hard two of the

o longer will beer-loving Richmondites need to go to Vancouver’s popular Commercial and Main districts to fill up their growlers with local craft suds from a production brewery.

Richmond’s first such brewery, Fuggles and Warlock, has opened its 60-person tasting room near Ironwood, where local residents can stop for a 1.9-litre growler fill-up and tasting.

Fuggles president Tom Orange said eight craft beers will be on tap at all times in the tasting room. Always on tap will be the company’s five staple beers plus three additional seasonal selections.

There will be four main areas to drink suds: the bar, the production house viewing area, the couches in front of a big screen TV and the outdoor patio.

“It’s worth sitting in front of the production windows, there’s a lot to see,” said Orange.

Notably, Fuggles has partnered up with Steveston’s D Original Sausage House, which will provide daily deliveries of fresh German specialty sandwiches, beer pretzels, deli pickles, German pepperonis and other snacks.

Much like many popular craft breweries in Vancouver, Fuggles will offer tasting samplers.

People can also purchase Fuggles beer in bottles and cans. Empty Fuggles growlers are available, as is brewery merchandise, which features Fuggles’ signature animated designs (also featured on beer cans and bottles).

Fuggles has taken hold at many Richmond liquor stores and is found across the province.

The company is looking to expand internationally, including Asian markets.

Awaiting Fuggles is a lounge endorsement from the BC Liquor Control and Licensing Branch in order to expand tastings. Orange said he expects the license in early May. Fuggles is at 11220 Horseshoe Way, south of Ironwood Plaza. Bike racks are available.

idden treasures await inquisitive, thrillseeking minds of all ages at the Richmond Nature Park this Sunday for the annual Geocaching Extravaganza.

Items will be placed all around the park for the fast-growing GPS treasure hunt for families, groups and individuals, noted the City of Richmond, which is hosting the free event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in conjunction with the B.C. Geocaching Association.

Geocaching involves using a smartphone app or GPS device to track down “treasures” hidden by event organizers. Participants, or treasure hunters, accumulate items, or “check in” to locations by marking them on their devices and signing a log book at the geocache site.

Geocaches can vary greatly, making each geocache hunt unique.

Some geocaches are only boxes for log-in purposes. Others have small items (toys or coins, for example) one can trade. And, there are also mystery caches that require hunters to accumulate special codes.

Richmond Nature Park staff will be on hand Sunday to provide information about the park’s natural surroundings. Assisting rookie geocachers will be experienced geocachers who will show them how to find a cache.

There will also be workshops for experienced geocachers.

Iron Age legends come to life at Navan Fort Mitchell Smyth

RMAGH, Northern Ireland — England has King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, Queen Guinevere and Sir Lancelot. Ireland has its own equivalents: King Conchobar, Queen Macha, the Red Branch Knights and the tragic Princess Deirdre. But whereas the exact location of Arthur’s Camelot is still disputed — if it existed at all — Ireland’s “Camelot” is not. It’s on a grassy hill in the middle of a seven-hectare meadow on the outskirts of Armagh.

Navan Fort, as the hill is known today, “was the royal and ritual seat of the ancient kings of Ulster in the Iron Age, around 300 B.C.,” says Amanda Young, our guide on a walking tour of the site.

Its story is told in what’s known as the Ulster Cycle, a collection in song and story of pre-Christian legends. The Cycle’s legends come to life on a visit to the fort and the nearby heritage centre, where visitors are immersed in the stories of Conchobar (the king of Ulster), his Knights of the Red Branch—Ireland’s most prestigious order of chivalry—and Queen Macha.

Visitors also learn the story of the greatest heroine of Irish legend, Deirdre of the Sorrows, a princess who died of grief after her husband was slain by Conchobar; and of Cuchulainn, the hero who died defending Ulster from the forces of Queen Maeve

of the province of Connacht.

Irish people knew these stories, but few were aware of their connection to this hill until archeological excavations in the last half of the 20th century shed light on its history. The fruits of those diggings are the basis for the displays in the $8-million heritage centre that opened in 2012.

The centre was constructed mostly underground so it doesn’t intrude on Navan Fort, which remains as it has for centuries: a grassy hill. The hill still holds one mystery. Amanda Young explains: “The archeological digs revealed that a great temple was built around 95 B.C. And then it was deliberately set on fire and burned to the ground. No one knows why.”

Some historians postulate that it may have been a religious ritual and that Navan Fort was not a fort at all, but a holy site. This would explain why — as visitors note — the ditch is on the inner side of the earthen bank. “This would have made it useless for defence,” says Young.

“Normally the ditch would be outside the bank or wall.”

No human remains were found in the excavations, but the diggers did find the skull of a Barbary ape, which they have carbon-dated to 300-150 B.C. “It may have been brought here as a prestige gift,” says Young. Barbary apes are native to North Africa; the skull seems to confirm there were trade routes between the Mediterranean and Ireland 2,000 years ago.

Carrying on the style of its predecessors, the 2016 4Runner retains a boxy overall shape. All models come standard with a roof rack, but the Trail Edition adds a hood scoop and a higher ground clearance.

Inside, the high quality materials make the 4Runner feel comfortable, but not quite at the level of the Highlander. The blocky layout reminds you the 4Runner is based on a truck, though there is plenty of usable storage.

The 4Runner is basically a 5-passenger vehicle but the more luxurious Limited model is available in either 5-Passenger or 7-Passenger configuration.

The 4Runner gained its popularity through its strong performance and its reputation as being indestructible. This is something the 2016 model continues to offer.

In that effort, the 4Runner is built around a proven and powerful yet efficient 4.0-litre V6. At its peak, it generates 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque, but what it does best is balance power delivery and efficiency across its operating range.

Although not the latest technology features 6 or 7 speed gears, the 4Runner is equipped with a proven 5-speed super ECT automatic transmission. Using a transmission cooler, it delivers confident acceleration and endurance in any weather or driving condition, while also returning a combined fuel economy rating of 12.8L/100km.

The 4Runner’s suspension delivers a decent combination of ride comfort and cornering ability. However, its height and weight causes it to lean considerably if pushed hard through a switchback.

While the 4Runner is not as agile as a car-based SUV, its narrow body makes it easier to maneuver in tight spaces than a full-size SUV. The same holds true in terms of noise and vibration.

Driver feedback is certainly truck-like, but that works well off-road. Trail Edition models come with 4-wheel Crawl Control and a Kinetic Suspension System with disconnecting stabilizer bars to help in this area.

All 4Runner’s come equipped with a tow package that includes a heavy duty tow-hitch receiver, 4+7 pin wiring harness, trailer brake controller pre-wire, and supplemental transmission cooler. This allows the 4Runner to easily haul 5,000 lbs.

As a daily driver, the 4Runner is so silky smooth and comfortable that it rivals luxury cars costing twice its price in terms of ride quality.

Down from altitude and feeling good Road to RIO

M

y three weeks in Flagstaff, Arizona have come to an end and I am temporarily back home in Richmond, enjoying training in our oxygen-rich, sea level air.

The three-week camp was full of ups and downs, but I certainly came out of it feeling much stronger and fitter.

The first week was very ordinary, easy walking to adjust to the altitude for the first few days before my first speed session. Not having done a speed workout since my race in Japan, I felt surprisingly good.

I did an 11 x 500 metre, plus a 2 x 1 km with one minute rest between each for a total of 7.5 km, a perfect start to the camp.

Week two had a lot more easy afternoon sessions to get the mileage up, which at home is quite easy, but at 2,100 metres it became much more challenging. I really struggled to keep my heart rate and effort in a low enough zone and I think I paid the price for that with a lack of recovery time between harder sessions.

Early in the week I embarked on what was supposed to be an 8 km tempo at 20 km race pace effort but I completely overreached myself and was spent by 4 km, dropping out after 5 km of the session. I tried to make up for that by zealously pushing the pace in the next day’s 30 km walk. I ended up walking a time that would have been a good moderate walk at sealevel, let alone at altitude.

Undeterred by the hard 30 km, I kept rolling through the week and Friday was a shot at redemption in the speed department. The task was a 5 x 2 km with a two minute rest between each rep.

I hit the ground running (not literally…) and by the end of the fifth rep each was still getting faster, so I decided to push for a sixth and made it the quickest still!

Sunday was a 40 km where I again pushed the pace a little too hard. I walked 3:18 with the second half being 10 minutes quicker than the first half.

Week two was hard fought with very few easy sessions, but all told, a happy and productive week.

Unfortunately, I might have burned my biscuits before the third week. Another 8 km tempo was first up, but again I blew a gasket by 4 km and dropped out at 6 km.

Friday, I struggled through the 6 x 2 km again, but this time the first was the quickest and overall I was about three minutes slower.

All other sessions were slow and felt harder than they should have.

In the last week I only managed 100 km and I was wrecked.

Coming home was an immediate mental and physical pick-me-up. My first few days of training have been much better. More importantly, I learned that my hemoglobin (the oxygen carrying part of blood that is tightly correlated to endurance performance) increased by 2.5 per cent over the three-week camp.

In elite sport this is a huge increase (a 2.5 per cent difference in time at the last Olympics was the difference between first and 12th).

This won’t relate directly to that big an increase in my overall performance, but knowing my hemoglobin is the highest it has ever been is a huge confidence boost.

And one week before a major race, confidence is key!

Originally purchased 18 years ago, the homeowner made the decision to renovate with two goals in mind. One, she wanted to create a pleasant living space for her parents, and two: create a proper upper storey with two bedrooms and bathroom for herself and daughter, with a more esthetic and functional space to cook and entertain. Wanting to preserve the unique heritage and character of their 1911 home, it was also important to modernize the standards and needs of their multigenerational family.

To achieve the client’s goals, Kerr Construction raised the home to accommodate full height ceilings with lots of light, and added a patio for the new in-law suite in the basement. Attention to detail was paramount, including traditional mill work, cabinetry, tile-work and coffered ceiling details throughout the entire renovation.

The coffered ceilings were rebuilt to align with the new

Scholefield boasted, “The wine we’re most proud of is Switchback (Haywire Switchback Organic Vineyard Pinot Gris 2014 ($24.90) because it is the first wine from Haywire that’s certified organic.”

It’s fermented using native yeasts and aged in concrete tanks for 10 months on the yeast lees. The result is an apple and herbal dry wine with minerality and structure that one normally enjoys in White Burgundies.

Another Pinot Gris that shows the inno-

vative spirit of Haywire is their 2014 Wild Ferment ($29.90). It uses native yeasts where the skins are steeped in the juice in large amphoras for eight months to extract a salmon colour. No sulfites or other additives are added. I enjoyed the gorgeous hue, the grapefruit character, and the very dry mouth feel.

A final wine that I’m fond of is the Haywire Waters and Banks 2014 Sauvignon Blanc ($24.90), aged in concrete and seven months on the lees. I like its fruit salad personality as well as the distinct Okanagan herbal aromatics. Juicy, fresh, and fun!

alista Espinosa’s rapid ascend into an elite freestyle wrestler has opened the door to a world of opportunities.

Just three years after taking up the sport at St. Patrick’s high school, the 15-year-old from Richmond was crowned national champion in the 40 kg class at the Cadet Canadian Championships in Calgary. A day later, she earned a spot on the national team that will be heading to Peru in July for the Pan American Championships. A strong showing in South America could mean competing at the Cadet Worlds, slated for the Eurasian country of Georgia in September.

“I never thought I would come this far,” smiled Espinosa. “It’s all really exciting.”

Combat sports, specifically jujitsu, had been her main focus since she was seven.

Espinosa took regular classes at Apex Martial Arts in North Richmond which remains her parents dojo. It’s when she arrived at St. Pat’s in Grade 8 that she became intrigued with the school’s wrestling program, which is overseen by Canadian Olympian Mark Mongeon.

“I wanted to be involved in something and our school had a wrestling team,” recalled Espinosa. “I didn’t know much about it because I was still involved in jujitsu. It took me a while but by the time I got to provincials, I finished third. My coach had really inspired me to train hard.”

By the end of her Grade 9 year, Espinosa wanted to take her commitment to the sport beyond high school to help realize her full potential. Her parents searched the Lower

Mainland for a club and found Burnabybased Coast Wrestling.

Now, on top of her high school season, Espinosa trains as much as four times a week, travelling to the club’s other location in Coquitlam as well — working with her coach Frank Mensah who also oversees the Women’s Provincial Development Team.

The intense schedule got her ready her for Cadet Nationals debut but there was more preparation required. Espinosa’s best competitive opportunity came at the 40 kg class. She had fluctuated between the 40-43 kg divisions over the last couple of years but typically weighs around 45 kg between competitions. It meant a rigid diet leading up to the championships.

The discipline paid off as Espinosa produced an opening round pin over Capilano’s Toni Medeiros in the gold medal match. She then faced her B.C. opponent again the next day at National Team Trials and this time won on points.

“I could see myself going to Nationals and winning. I had a good feeling I was going to accomplish my goal,” she added.

Her national team status means participating in camps around the country, leading up to the Pan Am Championships. Wearing Canadian colours does come at a significant price, besides the many hours in the gym.

With no federal or provincial funding, Espinosa is on her own for all expenses, including potential trips to Peru and Georgia. The estimated cost is $15,000.

Richmond golfer earns conference player of the year honours

ichmond native and Simon Fraser University sophomore Chris Crisologo of Richmond was recognized for his dominant individual season by being named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference.

Crisologo was selected by the conference coaches as Player of the Year after receiving the Freshman of the Year award in 2015.

The sophomore paced all GNAC golfers

with an average round score of 71.0 and tied for third place at the GNAC Championships at 5-under-par 208. Crisologo was the medalist at two tournaments and finished in the top-five in five of eight events. He will continue his season, along with Simon Fraser’s team, at the NCAA Division II South Central/West Super Regionals, May 2-4 in Las Cruces, N.M. Earlier this month, Crisologo had an eagle

on the fifth hole to move to 5-under-par 67 on the final day for a come-from-behind win at the Mustang Intercollegiate at the Palm Valley Golf Club.

Crisologo shot rounds of 69, 67, and 67 for a 203 total at the par 72, 7015 Yards Palm Valley Golf Course to share medalist honours with Brent Grant of BYU Hawaii.

It took the performance of her life for swimmer Noemie Thomas to earn her spot on the Canadian Olympic team headed to Rio this summer. At the Canadian Trials earlier this month in Toronto, Thomas not only needed to be under the Olympic qualifying standard in the 100-metre butterfly, she had to finish in the top two. The 20-year-old Cal Berkeley student delivered a clutch performance with a new personal best time of 57.02 seconds to place second behind Toronto’s Penny Oleksiak. Richmond F.C. have shown their resiliency to take them where they have never gone before.

The U15 Metro girls soccer team will be playing in its first-ever Coastal “A” Cup final Sunday morning in Aldergrove against Delta Coastal Selects. Both teams are also headed to the Provincial “A” Cup Championships in early July in Burnaby — another first for the locals.

Delta earned its spot by beating Richmond in the dying seconds of a Metro Selects League tiebreaker game after the rivals finished deadlocked atop the standings with 13-6-3 records. The heartbreaking defeat meant Richmond had to win the Coastal Cup to get the other provincial berth.

The girls opened with a quarter-final win over Vancouver, then erased an early deficit to defeat Surrey Guildford United 3-1 in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, the Coastal Selects were taking care of business on their side of the draw to reach the championship game, meaning Richmond advances to Burnaby too regardless of Sunday’s result.

“The entire league was very competitive this year with only seven points separating the top five teams. We gave up that early goal in the semi-finals and the girls just elevated their play and poured it on to score three times.”

This 2001 age group has been very competitive since Lawson began working with most of the players back at the

micro level. Richmond had reached the quarter-finals of Coastal Cup playdowns the two previous years before falling to the Port Coquitlam Castilians each time. The defending champions were eliminated by Delta.

“This is a strong group of multi-sport athletes,” added Lawson. “A lot of them play field hockey, basketball and school soccer right now too.”

The team will continue training through the spring and play in a tournament down south as a tune-up for the Provincial Cup.

Mom met her soul mate on a blind date, and they married in June of 1950. they had a wonderful full life together and Mom missed Dad everyday after he passed. she was also predeceased by her sister nan, and brothers, Jack, Harry and Jim. Mom is survived by her 3 daughters, Carol (Brian), Joan (Gord) and Kathy (rick), 5 grandchildren, andrea, Matthew, Jordan, taylor and Josh and 2 greatgrandchildren, avery and lucas.

Mom and Dad settled in richmond in 1957 and she lived in our family home until 2011. Mom’s scottish heritage was very important to her and she loved to share stories of relatives and the time she lived in edinburgh with her brother Jim and sister-in-law roxy. one of our favourite memories, and one that we will always treasure, is a trip Mom and the three of us girls took to scotland to celebrate her 80th birthday. Music was a very important part of her life. she always had a song in her heart. You couldn’t spend a day at our home without music playing or Mom singing. she was a member of the richmond sweet adeline chorus for over 25 years, where she made lifelong friends. Mom loved live theatre, travelling, playing cards with friends, reading the paper from front to back, talk radio, watching the news, listening to music and reading. Mom loved to be out and about and enjoyed afternoons at the mall and lunch or dinner dates with friends or her girls. she volunteered at the sos Children’s Village in steveston for a number of years, enjoying the social side of it, and the new friends she made.

Mom loved her family, cherished her friends and loved life. a special thank you to the staff at Delta View for their compassionate and respectful care they showed her over the past 3 years.

We’ll miss you Mom, but we know you are resting in God’s loving arms now.

You’ll be forever in our hearts. a private Memorial service will be held. in lieu of flowers please donate to Delta View life enrichment Centre.

Barbara Jackson was born May 27, 1938 in Oldham, Lancashire, England to Harold and Ada Jackson. She passed away in Richmond, BC on April 2nd 2016 at the age of 77, after an 18 month brave and spirited battle with cancer. She is survived by her 3 sons Bob, Michael and Stuart, 9 grandchildren and a growing list of great grandchildren. She has been laid to rest at the Ocean View Funeral Home in Burnaby, BC, alongside her husband Jay Siegel and her parents.

There will be no formal funeral, but the family is planning a small memorial for close friends and family on Saturday, May 28th, at the residence she loved so much in Steveston, BC. She will miss her beautiful view and we will all miss her dearly.
