How many times have you heard that self-important nugget when asking someone to lend you their ears for a moment or donate a thin slice of their time?

As president of my townhouse strata, I hear it all the time from residents, eager to voice their grievances when collaring me in our street, less inclined to continue the conversation when I suggest they run for council.

“I would love to, but…work, kids, sports,” etc. etc. Really?

Like, I have time in between my kid, his sports, his math homework, my two jobs and, oh yeah, being president of the strata, including watering every night for two weeks the new azalea bushes at the strata’s front entrance. You’re welcome, by the way.

The difference is — I care. I care enough to sacrifice a little bit of my every day to try and keep our complex half decent and not looking like an out-of-control slum.

I care about my surroundings and get that it takes more than one person to pitch in to foster community spirit.

You’ve heard the “broken window” theory, right? The reverse is also true. Case in point; my son recently took on the weekly task of cleaning up the litter in our strata and, within a few weeks, we witnessed other residents randomly picking up stray garbage.

The point is, it’s incumbent on all of us to get involved in the places we live.

Everyone and their dog seems to have an opinion on Richmond’s policing debate, yet a paltry 200 people bothered to show up over five open houses hosted by the city.

The city, as far as I can see, is doing its part in reaching out to residents on a myriad of platforms, online and traditional. Perhaps people are “too busy” to attend open houses?

Aren’t we all?

There are more chances, however, for people to build time into their iPhone calendars these coming weeks and show that they care.

The future make-up of the Garden City Lands and further densification along Richmond’s major roads lies, to an extent, in your hands.

Stop sitting on them, show up once in a while and be a part of the process. z So, the unsanctioned, unpermitted 420 folks are still protesting the fact that pot is almost legal, this time on a beach.

Meanwhile, there’s a 420 splitter – or is that spliffer? – group refused to stand easy by the beach, determined, instead, to hold their shaky ground at the original Vancouver Art Gallery protest site. Really?

Is anyone else getting Monty Python’s Life of Brian flashbacks? The scene where the People’s Front of Judea (PFJ) verbally abuse the Popular Front of Judea (PFJ) and Stan wants to protest for men’s right to give birth, even though they don’t have wombs...

LETTERSto the Editor News articles give hope Dear Editor,: Re: ““Council keeping Mounties,” News, April 13; “Replacing tunnel is not a priority,” Opinion, April 13.

Two articles in your April 13th edition give cause for hope of a better future.

The first being the future of policing in Richmond and recognition by our community leaders of the third option brought forward during recent public consultations: regional policing.

It is unfortunate Richmond RCMP is isolated from other RCMP detachments (Burnaby, Coquitlam and Surrey) by three separate local police forces (Delta, New Westminster and Vancouver). Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam share a single RCMP detachment with effective cost savings and efficiencies.

I hope any amalgamation of police services for Richmond will include service sharing with bordering cities, as well as the RCMP. Whatever the final decision, I expect a change of uniforms may be the only visible adjustment if the RCMP were not involved. Surely, regional accountability is of paramount importance.

RCMP accountability in Ottawa has been less than effective or respectful.

Surely, the provincial government could enjoy significant cost savings with regional policing in the Lower Mainland. Surely, creating a single file associated with processing criminal charges against an individual in a single policing district is far more efficient and cost effective than separate charges, investigations, and a multitude of court proceedings

in each existing police jurisdiction.

The provincial government could even share some of those cost savings with the region.

Surely, a single, human resource administration, training and logistical support entity could achieve improved cost benefits and improved internal communications. The Pickton murder inquiry identified a lack of communication between police forces in the Lower Mainland as a significant factor in the mishandling of the case.

A regional police force could and does work in some areas. It seems odd that criminals can cross borders but police cannot.

Community safety is the paramount purpose of policing; cost sharing for those services must be resolved as it has been in the above examples.

Regarding the second item, I am totally impressed with the efforts of Mr. Vincent Chiu and his interest in the affairs of our community and province portrayed in his review of the proposed George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project.

I encourage the residents of Richmond to remember his name and concerns if and when he considers seeking public office. (He ran for the Greens in the last federal election.)

This city has many talented youth, and he is certainly one of them. Thank you, Vincent, and good luck.

Transit etiquette needs honing Dear Editor, “Please move to the rear of the bus,” echoes throughout the bus as we wait for someone to shuffle back so others can get on.

Have you heard this robotic voice before? I have — every single day.

If you, like me, take public transit regularly, you have probably met some of the same people I have: that person who won’t give their seat to the elderly, or that teenager blasting their

music at the back with their feet propped up on the seat in front. The one who really irks me is the one who won’t move to the back of the bus.

A media outlet recently posted an article “7 public transit etiquettes Vancouverites sometimes forget.” I recognize every point they make.

No one should have to tell you how to behave on a bus; it should be common sense. But if the media is

If you’re disabled, you may be missing out Earlier this week, a story was published in the National Post that an estimated 1.1 million Canadians are disabled but are not receiving the disability tax credit. That’s an average of about 100,000 people per province.

This is a serious problem that stems from a lack of information. The disability tax credit is a Federal government benefit. As a disabled person, you can apply for it with the help of your doctor. The form is called the T2201, and is completed with some help from your doctor and sent to CRA (Revenue Canada). In 2015, the tax credit was set at $7,899.

What’s really important is that, depending how long you have had your disability, it may be permitted to “back file” for up to 10 years, which could bring a very large tax refund.

Large lots led to megahomes Dear Editor, Re: “Alas, Richmond is gone,“ Letters, April 13.

Joanne Mantie complains that the Broadmoor neighbourhood she has known for 25 years is gone and, now, so is she.

However, many long-time residents of that area are, in part, responsible for the situation they find themselves in (surrounded by large redeveloped houses).

In 1989, the city created Section 702, the Single-Family Lot Size Policy Study, which effectively froze the large lot format of many of Richmond’s established neighbourhoods.

Ironically, the original impetus of the policy was concerns by residents that subdivision of large lots to allow for two smaller houses, was creating a “lack of stability and constant pressure” on the large-lot neighbourhoods.

Fast forward to today, and now we have people who are very upset that “neighbours from overseas” are taking advantage of the large lot size and building “mega mansions”.

Ironically, if it wasn’t for the Lot Size Policy, the subdivided lots would have seen houses in the 2,500 square foot range, almost exactly

the same size as the original homes. Compare and contrast neighbourhoods like Broadmoor to the Steveston Grid, where lots can and have been subdivided. Yes, the original neighbourhood has changed, but the change has been positive and has contributed to the ongoing (and increased?) vitality of the area.

So, instead of “mega mansions” full of “neighbours from overseas,” the smaller houses/lots, being much more affordable, may have seen the neighbourhood re-populated with young families, which would have generated more enrollment for local elementary schools, possibly to the point where Richmond’s student population would not require the imminent closure of schools.

I suggest that it is time to re-examine (and hopefully repeal) this antiquated policy, and find ways to create more homes for young families in Richmond.

Times have changed since the late 1980s, and our land use policies must reflect those changes, so that we can continue to improve Richmond’s livability.

ore than 30 drivers were ticketed on a Richmond stretch of Highway 99 after they were caught taking pictures of a flipped semi-truck.

Late on Monday night, a northbound semi rolled over near the Cambie Street overpass, causing, amongst other things, a major distraction for passing motorists.

“Whenever there’s a major crash scene, there they go, driving by with their phones held high in the air, pointing right at us; it’s not at all subtle,” said Lecker.

“But what they maybe don’t realize is, at these major crashes, once the victims have been dealt with, the scene is secure and the road’s open again, there’s a lot of waiting around for tow trucks and crash analysts.

“So, we make good use of that time by ticketing (distracted drivers).”

Lecker explained that, in the case of Monday night’s crash, the passing traffic was going “nice and slow” with an opposite southbound lane — closed for safety — providing a perfect place to pull the offending motorists aside.

“It was tailor-made, to be honest,” he added.

“This is about safety, though, as every officer attending a crash scene knows that horrible sound of brakes screeching and then…”

Lecker also warned drivers, if they’re not careful, they could be hit with another $368 fine and six points for driving without due care and attention.

“Our concern is secondary crashes,” Lecker said. “We have a large number of secondary crashes.

“We are trying to clean the main crash up and, at the same time, we have a second and a third crash because people rear-end the car ahead of them because it is stop-and-go traffic, and they are looking at their phones.”

Lecker said people think it’s OK to use their phone in such circumstances because the traffic is moving slowly, but, he said, it’s actually more dangerous because the flow is less predictable.

McNair steps up for Joshua A

s the Richmond community continues to rally around six-year-old Joshua Weekes and his family, the little boy’s mom said he’s still in good spirits.

Another blood and bone marrow drive is being hosted in Joshua’s name — this time on May 12 by McNair secondary staff and students. And in Burnaby earlier this week, a school that boasts 70 different ethnicities hosted another drive in a bid to find a stem cell match for Richmond kid Joshua, who has a rare form of leukemia and a unique ethnicity, making it difficult to find a match.

Despite the push n Joshua Weekes, 6, is still in need of from the local coma donor munity and beyond — including a similar drive hosted at St. Joseph’s the Worker Parish by co-workers of Joshua’s mom, Lia, more than two weeks ago — a match has yet to be found.

Weekes, however, said her son, a DeBeck elementary Grade 1 student, is still fighting while undergoing chemotherapy.

“Joshua wakes up each morning with a smile for mommy and daddy and is still quite feisty with the nurses,” she told the See Goels page 9

he car trip season is fast approaching, if not already underway what with Canadian snowbirds and retirees on both coasts packing up in the United States and driving north back to Canada. They tell of well-maintained highways, heavy traffic around major cities at almost all hours—forget the ‘rush hour’—and an almost non-existent adherence to posted speed limits.

Traffic slows for volume and visible police presence.

When it unclogs, bumper-to-bumper left lane clusters form up to speed by the 18-wheelers in the slower right lanes. But even these behemoths are often speeding. Statically for anyone making the trip, the journey should of course be ‘crash free’, which is heartening. However, a new report from The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tells a worrisome story. (The IIHS is an independent, non-profit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing the losses from road crashes.)

In 1973, concern about fuel availability prompted the US Congress to pass the National Maximum Speed Limit law requiring states to adopt 55 mph (roughly 88 kph) as their maximum speed limit to qualify for their share of federal highway funds. In 1987, with energy concerns on the wane, states were allowed to increase the maximum on rural interstates to 65 mph. Then, in 1995, steady push back resulted in the law being completely repealed. Thereafter, speed limits across the country crept higher.

limits; Texas even has 85 mph limits on some roads.

(Proponents of higher speed limits always argue that legal limits unaligned with reality are unfair and in and of themselves unsafe, even though higher limits always result in higher over-the-limit speeds.)

Despite safety not having been the priority of the speed limit law, it demonstrated a correlation between speed limits and crash fatality totals: the 55 mph limit dramatically decreased crash fatalities; the partial repeal on the rural interstates increased fatalities on those roads; the full repeal then extended this increase to all interstates.

The IIHS report has looked at all speed limit increases from 1993 to 2013 in 41 states. Nine states and the District of Columbia were excluded because their relatively low vehicle miles per year produced wide fluctuations in their annual fatality rates. It looked at deaths per billion miles traveled by state and roadway type. Accounting for other factors affecting the fatality rate including employment levels, young drivers (ages 16-24), and per capita alcohol consumption, it found that each 5 mph increase resulted in a 4 percent increase in fatalities.

On interstates and freeways, the roads most affected by state maximums, the increase was 8 percent.

By comparing the annual fatalities in the 41 states with the expected number if each state’s speed limit had remained unchanged since 1993, IIHS estimates 33,000 additional fatalities over the 20-year period, roughly equal to the most recent nationwide annual totals. And as large a number as it is, 33,000 is likely an underestimate, the report concludes.

“Since 2013, speeds have only become more extreme, and the trend shows no sign of abating,” the report’s author said, adding, “We hope state lawmakers will keep in mind the deadly consequences of higher speeds when they consider raising limits.”

Goels: ‘Every single day...there’s a chance a match could be found’

Weekes said she continues to draw strength from the support of the community, adding that, “there are no words to describe our thankfulness.”

Trudi Goels, territory manager for Canadian Blood Services, which helps run the blood and bone marrow drives with the volunteers, said she reached out to some Richmond schools because the school board has been very supportive.

“They told me McNair was keen and it had the capacity to host the event,” said Goels.

“We need 101 people to come forward (at McNair) to donate blood on the day. We need that number to meet hospital demands.”

Goels said, although she’s not involved in the part of the process that would indicate if there’s a match for Joshua, “every single day, across the country, there’s a chance that a match could be found.”

The McNair blood and bone marrow drive is being held at the school on May 12. Everyone aged 17 and older is invited to donate blood from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments can be booked at Blood.ca or download the GiveBlood app. Donors can also drop in to get swabbed and join the national stem cell registry and, perhaps, be the match that could save Joshua`s life.

f you remember the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers from the ‘90s or S.P.D. (Space Patrol Delta) from the 2000s, then you’re in for a treat over the next few weeks.

TV’s Power Rangers franchise, brainchild of Haim Saban, is being turned into a feature film series and it’s going to be filmed right here in Steveston.

From Monday, April 25 to Thursday, May 17, the streets of Steveston Village will morph into a movie set for the big screen adaptation of the Power Rangers.

While filming takes place, Steveston

businesses will still be open and the public is being encouraged to continue to visit the village and perhaps catch a glimpse of the Power Rangers in action.

The majority of filming activity, according to the City of Richmond, will take place on Moncton Street between First and Third Avenue.

Additional filming will happen on Bayview Street between First and Third Avenue and at the intersection of Moncton Street and No. 1 Road.

The scope of filming, said the city, is “large and will require road closures and intermittent traffic control each filming day between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. Streets may be opened earlier when filming is completed each day.”

Street parking will be limited during filming. However, free parking for Steveston Village visitors will be provided at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery lot on Chatham Street.

The movie shoot, added the city, will employ almost 300 local full-time employees for a minimum of five months.

The rebooted Power Rangers film stars Elizabeth Banks as arch-villain Rita Repulsa, along with new Power Rangers Dacre Montgomery, Ludi Lin, RJ Cyler, Naomi Scott and Becky G. The movie, set to be released in 2017, is based on the popular 1990s children’s TV show, where normal teenagers turn into brightly coloured superheroes to save the world from evil.

Manhole covers get artsy

C

reative new manhole covers will soon be turning up on Richmond streets.

The new covers are the result of a contest which challenged local artists to create designs for City manhole covers, which would reflect Richmond’s cultural heritage.

Mayor Malcolm Brodie was joined by the four winning artists Tuesday, April 19 to unveil the actual manhole covers at Richmond City Hall.

cover art contest launched in 2014 and brought in 150 entries. The four winning designs were created by artists Caroline Dyck, Greg Allen, Jeff Porter and Susan Pearson.

“This was a fun contest that took common, previously unremarkable pieces of our civic infrastructure and transformed them into pieces of art that celebrate some of the things that make Richmond unique,” said Brodie. “The

new manhole covers will add to our community vibrancy and I congratulate each of the winning artists for their creative vision.”

The first 40 covers will be installed in Steveston Village and along No. 3 Road in the City Centre, to be followed by 200 installations in pedestrian areas throughout the city over the next few years. n Artist Caroline Dyck’s manhole design depicts Japanese paper cranes fishing for salmon. The artwork represents the Japanese community who settled in the historic Steveston fishing community at the turn of the 20th century. Paper cranes are associated with luck in Japan, and legend says if one folds 1,000 of the origami creations, their wish will be granted. n The manhole by artist Greg Allen portrays the Britannia Shipyard, National Historic Site, an important location in Richmond’s

history. It illustrates boat building during the height of the region’s salmon fishery industry. n Artist Jeff Porter’s work acknowledges Richmond’s Chinese population and its historical contribution to the city with the “shou” symbol.

The “shou” symbol at the centre of the manhole cover is the blessing of longevity and good health. The design also includes fish scales and waves, which represent Richmond’s maritime history, and a bold pattern signifying reference to the Coast Salish peoples. n Richmond’s beginnings as a First Nations fishing camp is the theme of artist Susan Pearson’s artwork on her manhole cover. Encircling the design is the cedar tree, which First Nations peoples made their canoes from, and cedar tree bark, which they made their nets and ropes from.

eaders in Richmond and Vancouver’s business, civic and education spheres will converge in two weeks’ time to hear from some of the most influential minds in the world.

As part of a simulcast — being beamed to host sites around the planet — more than 100 people are set to attend Leadercast at Richmond’s Sandman Signature hotel on May 6.

Among the stellar lineup of guest speakers at the live event in Atlanta will be Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Inc., Kat Cole, group president at FOCUS Brands (Auntie Anne’s, Cinnabon and more) and Nick Saban, head football coach at The University of Alabama.

And as well as hearing presentations from the aforementioned speakers, attendees will have the chance during the day to network with fellow leaders and top university leadership students.

“It’s about networking and recruiting, while hearing and seeing presentations from some of the greatest business leaders in the world,” said Russ Swaim, area manager for Langley-based, non-profit mentorship organization LeaderImpact, which is hosting the Richmond event.

“Wozniak is going to be answering questions — posed ahead of time. We can’t interact with (the guest speakers) face-to-face, but we can hear the challenges they all faced and overcame to be among the best in their industries.

“The aim is also to build better leaders across different genres and to develop character and principals.”

The simulcast will be on a one-hour delay, to allow for technical difficulties, and will start at 7:45 a.m. and run until 4 p.m. Included in the $125 (plus tax) fee will be the simulcast, lunch and snacks.

Running for Devi Alan Campbell

S

urrounded on all sides by throngs of adrenalin-pumped runners, Devi Ralla was dipping deep into her well of resistance to deny the almost overwhelming urge to do what she’d been doing every day for 15 years.

She was managing to resist the temptation to sneak into a jog during the 8K walking leg of the 2015 Vancouver Marathon, when she couldn’t hold it in any longer.

No sooner, however, had she developed into a trot, Devi’s daughter, Rachelle — who was walking with her, along with other family members — jumped into her path, immediately halting her bid to break from the “pack.”

“Last year, I kept trying to run — but the cancer had gotten into my back,” said Devi, of Richmond, a veteran marathoner who was diagnosed with breast cancer in the fall of 2014.

“Each time I tried to run, my daughter jumped in front of me to stop me. I was angry at the time, as I was surrounded by people running and my urge was to run. Of course, it was the right thing for her to do.”

Now, a year on, it’s not just Devi’s daughter who’s pulling for the popular, 55-year-old former marathon training leader and Hugh Boyd secondary education assistant.

She has a small army of followers, 104 at the last count, who, on Sunday, May 1, will be sporting for the second year running Team Devi colours at the 2016 renewal of the event.

events, while others will run the half and full marathons in her honour.

One of those running, for the second consecutive year — and only his second run of his life — is Devi’s son, Braeden, who had a surprise for her on her birthday 17 months ago, only weeks after she’d been diagnosed.

“Braeden handed me my card. Inside it was a registration for the next year’s Vancouver Marathon,” said Devi, who lives in Seafair.

“Initially, I didn’t look at it properly and I said, ‘you know I can’t run in this.’ Then I realized it was Braeden’s registration and he was going to run the marathon for me.

“He’d never run in anything like this before and hadn’t done any training; he’s more of a gym junkie and I pointed out he wouldn’t be

“I started crying. I was very touched.”

This year, Devi said, her son registered again and again he gave her the registration in her birthday card last December.

“This time, he’s been training,” laughed Devi. “He wants to raise $10,000 and break the four-hour barrier. Last year, he ran it in around four hours and 20 minutes. My best was four hours and 14.”

Devi said she still can’t believe her son is running for her. “I miss running so much. But now I’m running it through him.”

Kim Sorensen, Devi’s former marathon running partner of 13 years, has just returned from running the Boston Marathon this week, sporting a Team Devi t-shirt no less.

“She’s just one of those people who knows people everywhere she goes,” said Sorensen, when asked why Team Devi has so many people wanting to be a part of it.

“She’s such a warm person, so bubbly,

energetic and charismatic. Her diagnosis touched a lot of people and we really miss running with her.

“To be able to run in her place is really special; the running community is so close.”

Sorensen, who’s also running a marathon in California this weekend, will be on the Team Devi water station and will walk the 2.5K on the Saturday of the Vancouver event.

Of her backers on Team Devi, initiated by her brother Kevin and her son after her diagnosis, Devi said she’s no idea she had so many friends. “It’s unbelievable,” she said.

This year, she will be walking the 8K again.

This time, with no shenanigans, but tinged, still, with emotion.

“Oh, there’s going to be tears,” she said. “I think I’ll know better (than trying to run) this year; I’m just thankful I can at least walk.”

“I still remember the first time (completing) 20 kilometres,” she says. “Tired, shaking and cold. It was a very, very, very horrible experience.”

But Ho remained optimistic.

“We still have time. We still have three months. We can do it,” she remembers telling her teammates.

The team worked itself up to 40-kilometre, eight-hour training walks. But then came the backpacks. They added more and more heft to their practice packs until they reached the 20-pound race weight.

“One time I felt so tired...I had to cry out

so loud. It was so painful,” Ho remembers.

“I didn’t take any medicine for over 20 years. For this training, I need (to).”

For the last two weeks the team has been walking on sand, making training twice as hard. “(It’s) double power. And we’re predicting the Sahara will be more difficult because of the heat.”

On Saturday Ho and her team will leave as the first B.C. competitors in the race — held annually since 2005 — and the first group of Chinese-Canadians. Donations are being collected through the Care for Life Foundation website at CFLF.ca.

GICs: What to do with all those cash reserves...

ash reserves held by Canadians have risen significantly since the global financial crisis. Earlier this year, CIBC World Markets reported that Canadians currently hold $75 billion in cash. That’s almost 10 per cent of the total value of overall personal liquid assets in Canada.

CIBC also noted that, in the past year alone, cash positions are estimated to have risen more than 11 per cent. And that is the fastest pace since early 2012.

Much of the increase can be linked to lingering fears about market volatility. Cash can protect capital over the short-term but it has long-term implications for portfolio growth, particularly when factoring the corrosive effects of inflation.

Regardless, cash is an important component of any portfolio but it requires appropriate management.

Preparation requires a focus on capital preservation, income generation, and a readiness to act. These criteria dictate that some of a portfolio be held in cash.

However, many people inadvertently end up with different liquidity than originally intended because they made hurried decisions. This is too often the case with GICs. Consider investors who are sitting on cash because they want to seize opportunities when prices are right.

They don’t have an immediate use for the cash, but neither do they want it sitting in the bank earning little interest, so they buy GICs. This method of storing cash becomes an issue when the investor wants to move quickly but discovers that the GIC was rolled over on maturity and their money is not available.

Instead, the funds have been locked in for another term by an automatic process that many financial institutions use if not instructed otherwise.

To avoid that scenario, an investor should know the terms prior to investing and, if they choose a GIC with an automatic rollover, they must note the maturity date.

This will allow them to contact their advisor in sufficient time to implement other courses of action such as taking advantage of opportunities or adjusting an asset mix.

Automatic rollovers are doubly disadvantageous when processed without consideration of other products on the market.

Depending on interest rates, money market or other fixed income alternatives may be more suitable storage vehicles than GICs. Investors may want to explore alternatives like high interest savings accounts, and certain government or corporate bonds, depending on their quality.

GICs are not all created alike and investors must understand

what they are purchasing. For example, deposit insurance varies depending whether at a bank or from a credit union.

At banks or trust companies, GICs with terms of five years or less are protected up to $100,000 by the Canada Deposit Insurance Corp (CDIC), a federal Crown corporation.

Credit unions often have greater coverage but fall under their own provincial deposit insurance plans.

Younger Richmondites handed green baton Failed attempts to act on climate change means yet another generation will be asked to find solutions

s the old saying goes, hope springs eternal. And it especially springs eternal for Woodward elementary teacher Anne-Marie Fenn, who helped celebrate Earth Day on Thursday with her school’s students with Green Games activities.

“The students have a good understanding of the needs facing our Earth today and they are committed to making positive changes. Our future is in good hands!” said Fenn.

As noted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, changes to the Earth’s environment are set to produce detrimental effects on human health, society, culture and infrastructure — the impetus for the 46th year of Earth Day. It’s such bleak news that motivates Fenn to teach young students about environmental stewardship.

The Green Games featured a number of outdoor activities that used recycled materials as props. Students also planted sunflowers in their garden beds to support bees and other vital pollinators, whose populations are declining globally.

“We had 100 per cent student participation and all seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves while learning,” said Fenn.

Such attitudes and ideas are being put forth to youth throughout the school district in Richmond, such as at this Saturday’s Richmond Earth Day Youth (Ready) Summit at Hugh Boyd secondary. But only time will tell whether this latest round of education will work, granted past generations of youth have failed to curb consumption and pollution — particularly in the developed world — as they become older.

Should NASA’s proven and predicted trends on global warming and climate change continue, Richmond will be Canada’s ground zero for mitigation efforts to combat sea level rise as it falls well below the Fraser River. Other problems will hit close to home, as oceans and rivers warm, salmon stocks are imperiled and B.C.’s forests become tinder boxes. And climate-induced global migrations will only increase.

So, on the whole, how does Richmond stack up in its fight against the perils of climate change?

One Richmondite who has spent the better part of his young life thinking about this is Vincent Chiu, a member of the Green Party of Canada.

Having attended several Ready Summits and now a firstyear arts student at the University of B.C., Chiu is hopeful that today’s youth are being given more of an opportunity to participate in environmentalism in Richmond.

He said the summit has evolved to become more youthled, instead of being organized by adults, with students as sideline observers.

“I’d like to see more programs connecting youth with mentors. Young people don’t have a lot of hard skills or are able to see how things work,” said Chiu.

If that happens, kids can relate more to people and their surroundings, instead of simply learning facts about the environment, contended Chiu.

He believes sustainability should mean adapting society and the economy to the environment.

“In the past, we’ve adapted our environment to our society and economy.

“We have to start thinking differently. We’re coming to a limit of what our environment can provide,” said Chiu.

He takes aim at consumer culture that becomes ingrained in youth from an early age, claiming that sustainability is as much about “reimagining” our social and cultural practices.

So, instead of spending money on a new TV, perhaps one could spend it on an enjoyable activity. Or, shaping one’s diet by eating less meat and more local food could also benefit the environment, said Chiu, 19.

One thing is certain, according to Chiu: If today’s youth follow in the footsteps of the previous generation, environmental problems will only worsen.

“I hear so little in the way of monumental change and kids really getting it. Young people are being brought up with a generation that has lost touch,” said Wolfe, 33.

At the City of Richmond, a team of planners is tasked to implement a series of measures to reduce greenhouse gases.

Wolfe said he’s unconvinced the municipal government is acting as leaders in this area.

“We’re a community of followers when it comes to sustainability practices,” said Wolfe.

However, city spokesperson Ted Townsend said, “we’re pleased with the sustainability projects we’re able to roll out.”

The impetus for Richmond to take action, as noted in a recent report to council, comes from an estimate from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that the Metro Vancouver area will experience longer, dryer summers, wetter winters, and more extreme storms. With sea-level rise Richmond will need to spend $300 million in 2014 dollars to mitigate flood risk (provincially the costs are expected to near $10 billion).

The city’s goals of greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions are the same as the province’s: reduce community GHG emissions 33 per cent below 2007 levels by 2020 and 80 per cent below 2007 levels by 2050.

The goals are not achievable through city leadership alone, noted Peter Russell, Richmond`s senior manager of sustainability and district energy.

The goals require provincial and federal regulatory changes and funding, market innovation and increasing carbon pricing, notes the report.

The city has taken a number of initiatives, albeit ones that have also been taken in many other B.C. municipalities.

The $23 million Alexandra District Energy Utility will provide geothermal heating and cooling for new condo developments in north Richmond.

Russell noted from 2007 to 2014 Richmond`s population increased by 14 per cent while its natural gas consumption reduced by four per cent and electricity consumption only increased one per cent.

Townsend said its measures such as the city promoting rebates for smart thermostats and energy efficient washing machines that have helped.

The city is also buying more electric vehicles and reducing its energy consumption thanks to new energy efficient buildings.

Russell said it counts corporate GHGs according to provincial guidelines.

It has helped that the city does not include the Richmond Olympic Oval in such calculations. That’s because the Oval is its own corporate entity (thus, it’s excluded from city hall tabs, otherwise it would be the city’s single-largest energy consumer).

Also not a factor in municipal and community energy consumption calculations is new construction, such as new condo towers or home demolitions.

Wolfe contends few, if any, of the city’s efforts are unique.

“You see something happen elsewhere and then Richmond will have a smaller, similar version. There’s never any initiative to go further,” said Wolfe.

“The city signs on to be a solar community, but what does that mean?” asked Wolfe, noting no concrete action has been taken.

“Geothermal energy is good but (condo construction) comes at the expense of a rapid loss of all the other good things nature has provided,” said Wolfe, noting Richmond’s loss of urban green space in many areas.

“City staff and councillors are not leaders. . . But there’s hope in me for the students and the next generation.”

Real estate speculation is threatening the future of farmland in Richmond and B.C., says food systems expert GRAEMEWOOD

eal estate speculation of local farmland has passed the “tipping point” and is the leading threat against building a sustainable, job-producing regional food system, according to Dr. Kent Mullinix, director of Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Institute for Sustainable Food Systems.

“To put it quite bluntly, the provincial and federal governments have allowed this huge influx of wealth to come in here and it’s skewed the market; it’s blown it out of the water,” said Mullinix.

The institute is busy these days, undertaking three major research projects that aim to promote local food production. One of those projects is reclaiming a 20-acre educational farm on the Garden City Lands. Preliminary work begins this summer on it, after Richmond city council approved the partnership earlier this year.

As the KPU farm at Garden City becomes a reality, Mullinix is also set to soon publish findings of a study that looks at how a “bioregional food system” could develop in Southwest B.C. The possibility of the Lower Mainland becoming more food secure is, however, dependent on solving the problem of real estate speculation on farmland, which is the focus of yet another ongoing study at the institute.

“The cost of land is in the way. There’s no direct link between the cost of land in Southwest B.C. and the cost of food. They’re detached. It’s not even remotely related,” said Mullinix.

For instance, farmland in south Richmond is now being sold for roughly $300,000 per acre.

“There’s no farming that can service that cost,” said Mullinix.

A new report from Vancity, titled Home on the Range, notes the financial viability of many farm businesses in B.C. becomes questionable when land prices reach $80,000 per acre.

Mullinix and his staff, as well as students, are presently mapping out who exactly owns what farmland in the Lower Mainland.

“What we’re trying to do is get to the question of who owns this land and why is it so expensive. It’s not (monetarily) valued for agriculture,” said Mullinix.

“We think it’s going to be very interesting to find out who owns it. I think what we’re going to find is a lot of agricultural land is not held by agricultural concerns. So, we hope to find out why it’s being held. Is it an investment? Are people determining it can be pulled out of the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) and developed, or what?”

The ALR was established in 1973 and protects farmland across the province.

There are about 12,000 acres of ALR land in Richmond, which, generally, cannot be developed unless approved by both municipal and provincial governments (via the Agricultural Land Commission).

But as Coun. Harold Steves has noted, local real estate companies are presently advertising farmland as investments for future development — hence the skyrocketing prices.

“Only a small number of landowner applications for removal are successful, however the possibility of success may still encourage speculation and be a factor affecting the price of larger parcels of farmland,” noted Vancity.

Mullinix said this sort of valuation of farmland is hitting everyone in the pocketbook because as the region sees more unused farmland appear, local food becomes even more scarce, leading to a greater reliance on expensive imports.

Largely as a result of California’s drought, Vancity noted price increases of 26 per cent for fresh vegetables and nine per cent for fresh fruit for local consumers since January 2015.

If local farmers were to buy land at the current speculative values, prices for local food would further skyrocket; lettuce would cost 18 per cent more, cabbage 35 per cent more and potatoes 68 per cent more.

Farmers can lease, but the Vancity report notes there are inherent flaws in this system.

“Fewer capital investments and land stewardship practices are made on leased farmland because of the short-term tenure of agreements.”

Presently, about one-third of farmed land in Metro Vancouver is leased.

Furthermore, Mullinix estimates some 44,000 acres of farmable land is not in production in Metro Vancouver.

Adding to the pressures is the increase in estate homes being built on ALR land.

Such mansions are numerous in Richmond and set a new price benchmark based on its value as a luxury residential property instead of a working farm, according to the report.

Solutions have been pitched by local stakeholders, according to the report, such as: taxation policies to promote food production, encouraging long-term leases through policy, gathering ownership data, an end to ALR exclusions altogether and innovative partnerships.

On the latter point, the City of Richmond’s agreement with KPU to develop the Richmond Farm School and incubator farm, where students can access municipal land to farm, is one example.

With potential solutions in hand, Mul-

linix is soon set to release the findings of the Southwest B.C. Bioregion Food System Design Project.

“The preview is this: Even with the significant increase in population, if we play it right, we have the opportunity to substantially increase regional food self-reliance,” said Mullinix.

The study will outline the economic benefits of doing so, such as examining how a more robust farming system can result in more jobs, taxes, GDP enhancement and business opportunities.

Creating this regional food system, from Hope to the Sunshine Coast, will mean getting local companies on board, as well as capital investments to improve soils and biodiversity.

“We’ve taken agriculture and food for granted. We’ve assumed this global system would provide cheap food forever. What we’re finding out, it’s not cheap anymore and it’s certainly not assured with climate change,” said Mullinix.

He added that a part of the solution to the farming fiasco is to have regular residents reconnect with farming. To do that, Mullinix is a big proponent of urban/farm interfacing, which occurs in Richmond.

“There’s this dichotomy here. The dynamics are really interesting. There’s this community that values agriculture and sustainable food systems and wants to preserve, and is proud of, its agriculture heritage, but then it also sees itself as this bustling metropolis. . .It’s demonstrated around the world that a thriving bustling city can exist with agriculture,” said Mullinix, who nevertheless added that he found it “interesting” that council approved a strip mall next to the Garden City Lands.

Can you keep a Paulik Park secret?

A

hhh! Paulik Neighbourhood Park — Richmond’s very own secret garden in the centre of Richmond.

This six-acre city-owned park was once owned and inhabited by two families as far back as the 1930s — the Ohlers and the Pauliks.

The Ohler family sold botanical plants and frogs. The Paulik family planted a forest and perennial garden beds using the arts and crafts design popular in the 1930s.

Arts and crafts landscape design incorpo-

rated the look of “wild gardens” with informal borders.

The use of rocks or plants (for example, boxwood hedges) to delineate borders was predominate in this style of gardening, along with incorporating long, lush focal view points within the gardens.

Matriarch Irene Paulik was the chief architect of the Paulik Park perennial gardens, covering 1.5 acres on their property.

Rock and plant borders are abundant within the park. Long, magnificent views of sumptuous gardens are prevalent in the park from all angles.

As soon as the Lion’s Gate bridge opened in 1938, the Paulik family visited the North Shore and brought home coniferous tree seedlings of all types, creating a forest on their property!

They also brought back sequoia seedlings and planted them in their gardens.

After Irene and her husband passed away, their son, Ed Paulik, continued to live on the property and maintained the gardens.

He delighted in adding massive rocks he collected from his many adventures into the interior of British Columbia, which can be seen today.

The City of Richmond purchased the property a number of years ago with Ed continuing to maintain the gardens.

When Ed passed away, the family home was demolished and the gardens were adopted by Richmond Garden Club in 2008.

Today, volunteers from the Richmond Garden Club and the community at large continue to maintain 36 perennial garden beds in the park.

The joy that we, the volunteers, experience is palpable — anyone strolling through the park enjoy finding us up to their elbows in dirt.

Lots of friendly conversations, even with people who speak other languages, are struck between the gardeners and the visitors.

us; friendly dogs always need to stop by and ask for a pat or two.

We even have a neighbourhood cat who loves to come in and see what we are all up to!

Imagine the feelings of peace we have while being surrounded by lush green plants, vivid coloured flowers and perfume scents from plants around us!

First time visitors to the park have trouble leaving. They can be found wandering through all the nooks and crannies of the gardens finding something new and astounding at every turn.

Long time faithful visitors spend many days a week strolling through the gardens enjoying the quiet and the everchanging landscape. People often say to us with their finger on their lips, “Shhh.

Don’t tell anyone. I call this my secret garden!”

A strong sense of ownership has been created within our community with all the interactions between the volunteers and visitors to the park.

We invite you to come and visit us and share the joy of this gem in the middle of our urban jungle. Paulik Neighbourhood Park is located north of Blundell Road between Heather and Ash Streets.

Retirement For Beginners

T

hose of you who know me, know that I’m a virtual luddite. (Is that an oxymoron?)

Compared to the younger generation (ie. anyone under 40), I know the bare minimum about technology. Or at least that’s what I’d convinced myself to believe.

Retirement has allowed me to expand my technological horizons.

Having been a devoted PC user most of my working life, or at least once I escaped the Dark Ages of the card catalogue (google it, you Millennials), I never thought I’d go over to the “other side.”

But here I am, the proud owner of an iPad, iPhone, and a new iMac. The first two are easy-peasy to learn. But the iMac...it’s a whole new animal.

I’d been told how easy Mac is to use, so I thought, hey, no problem; I’ll just magically transfer all my PC files over to my Mac and get on with life. Not so fast. And apparently not so easy.

I learned the hard way that migrating documents and photos from one platform to another is not as simple as just putting everything on a flash drive and plugging it in.

Especially when you have 24,000 photos, like I do. I’d need a flash drive with memory the size of a Smart car.

So, with nothing but time on my hands, I embarked upon some computer self-

tutoring.

Between tips from OS X El Capitan for Dummies and Google, I learned that I’d need a portable hard drive that’s compatible with PC and Mac. Sounded simple enough.

That was until I learned that you have to format the hard drive in order for it to work.

And therein lies the rub.

After approximately six hours of frustrating calls to Apple Support and the Geek Squad at Best Buy, I came out with a whole new lexicon: exFat, Fat32, NTFS, disk utility, partitions, and more. And I actually know what they all mean now!

All this is by way of saying that one is never too old to learn new stuff. I don’t claim to be a tech-head, but I’m living proof that fears, once faced, can be overcome.

And now my files live harmoniously on the iMac. So if you’re retired and looking to expand your knowledge about technology, check out the free Idiot’s and Dummies guides at the library, as well as free computer classes there. Retirement allows you the luxury of learning at your own pace.

There may be frustrations along the way but it sure feels good to accomplish something you never thought possible. Particularly in an area like technology, which is changing so fast.

Even just conquering the lexicon is an achievement. So get out there and start computing!

ast week was great! I worked hard and was rewarded with a sevenpound weight loss.

Take that, Mongoose!

My steady diet of every day cardio and watching the calories has worked.

I’m even starting to see a little evidence of muscle growth from my strength training workouts.

My legs are strong and my upper body feels like it may have some muscles beginning to develop. And remember those three suits that I haven’t worn this year?

I’m back in them.

The workout that Gabrielle Payne, my trainer from City Centre Community Centre, gave me continued to be intense, but I’m motivated to keep losing weight and feel like I’m getting stronger and settling into the schedule and intensity of the workouts.

The real challenge for me has been the weekends, away from Gabriella and the gym.

I was out of town last weekend and my routine was, let’s say, distracted by my old nemesis: beer and nachos.

I think I celebrated my dominance over the Mongoose, Rob Akimow, way too much as my weight went up half a pound by Monday.

However, that weight gain has motivated me to work even harder, and Gabrielle was happy to accommodate.

t’s week four of the fitness challenge and my trainer A.J. tells me that it’s time to “switch it up.”

By that he means an extra day of circuit training, or, as I like to call it, actually never mind what I call it; it’s not fit to print.

Either way, my weekly routine now looks like two days of weight training, two days of circuit training and two days of 20-minute cardio sessions.

To be honest, I am feeling better, and I think I am looking better. I am able to lift more, move faster and I’m enjoying this process — with the exception of the circuit.

When you put yourself through a 10-week fitness challenge and write about it for the newspaper, you have to make sure you are putting in the work, mainly so you don’t embarrass yourself at the end of challenge. (My wife maintains, I will be successful based solely on the fact my ego is too large to have to admit defeat.)

But you also must be aware of your surroundings and experiences in order to paint a picture for the readers.

Mall gets a European touch

A touch of Euro style is being served up at Richmond Centre. Dutch fashion label Scotch & Soda opened its first B.C. store in the mall. The brand from Amsterdam features apparel for men, women and children, from shows to outerwear. At Richmond Centre it will offer clothing for men and women from its Maison Scotch and Amsterdams Blauw collection, which combines American and Japanese denim styles in a variety of men’s and women’s jeans, shirts, jackets and more. Currently, Scotch & Soda operates stores in three other Canadian locations – Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto.

attily attired in a smart black top and skirt, Puneet Rai presents the ideal picture of the young office clerk. And when you talk to her about her job, her dark brown eyes immediately light up and her mouth quickly curls into an infectious smile.

“I really like working here. Everyone is really nice,” says the 19-year-old Richmond native. “I like the fact that I can ask people if I need help with something.”

Rai has been working as an administrator at the No. 3 Road and Westminster Highway branch of Vancity since late last November and came through the Richmond Society for Community Living’s (RSCL) employment service program that provides individual support for those with disabilities in job searches.

In Rai’s case, RSCL was able to match her up with Vancity’s work inclusion program that, since it was started in 2015, has hired a total of 15 people with disabilities in administrative support roles and in information technology at locations across the Lower Mainland.

In central Richmond, Rai works three days a week — a total of eight hours with full benefits —and helps keep things running smoothly for Vancity branch staff.

“She does so much for us,” says Praveen Sidhu, community branch manager at the No. 3 Road location. “She shreds, files and organizes.”

She also makes the rounds of the offices to gather all the recycling material and ensures staff are all stocked with pens and note pads.

“She does an awesome job keeping us all in line,” Sidhu says, adding the Vancity program provides not only meaningful work for the employee, but sends a clear, positive message to other workers in the organization, which can act as a positive boost in the workplace.

Lisa Cowell, RSCL’s manager of community development, backs that up.

“We’ve seen over the years with various employers the value for other staff when diversity and inclusiveness becomes part of the hiring process, Cowell says. “You start to see the shift in thinking among other staff around the culture of the organization in a positive way. And when employers have a diverse hiring practice, they tend to also have an increase in (employee) retention because staff see the organization in a more positive way and see the value of the diversity in the workplace.”

Retention of a disabled worker at their place of work is also higher. According to Statistics Canada information, employees with a disability are 72 per cent more likely to stay in their job than their non-disabled counterparts.

While Rai, who has a developmental disability, has only been with Vancity for six months, she says the environment is one she enjoys more than her first job that was in a retail clothing store.

“I have seen her blossom,” says Suzanne Jackson, an employment specialist with RSCL, who has worked with Rai since high school to get her ready for the job world.

“Part of it is getting older and maturing.

But it’s also due to the experience she is getting here. It’s made her into a confident, young woman. It’s really great to see her grow with this opportunity.”

“It’s an opportunity to develop financial independence and not be exclusively dependent on a personal disability payment, which is not enough for anybody to live on in a comfortable meaningful way,” says Cowell.

“It’s also opened up her support network,” Jackson adds. “Everybody here, where Puneet works, is now a member of her social network. That helps eliminate the risk that she is going to be isolated in the community.”

That became apparent recently when Vancity’s Sidhu noticed she and Rai attend the same church.

“She actually saw me at church and didn’t realize that I go to the same one as her,” Sidhu said. “And when I went up later and tapped her on the shoulder she recognized me and was so happy.”

So, what is it like for Rai to get a paycheque?

She breaks out into a smile at the question and says she enjoys being able to go out with her family and buy a meal.

“I spend it sometimes. I am not much of a shopper. But my sister, she is. But I save it, too,” she says, adding a trip to Edmonton this summer to visit cousins is one of her short term financial goals.

For RSCL, helping secure job for Rai fills one of the organization’s goals.

“We’ve been offering supportive employment since 2009 and we have a great track record with all kinds of industries.

This is our first financial institution and for us having a large one like Vancity onboard demonstrates to the community there is a job for every single person,” Cowell said.

“And Puneet is proof of that. There are positions in every type of company that are either undiscovered, or underdeveloped.”

MDA names CEO

Howard L. Lance has been named as the new president and CEO of Richmond`s high-tech firm MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (MDA). Lance succeeds Daniel Friedmann, who served as CEO since 1995. Friedmann will continue to serve as member of the board of directors.

While the 2016 Audi TT is all-new, it doesn’t look significantly different than the two previous generations. It does have a more masculine overall feel, however, and thoroughly modern design inside and out.

n Performance

Powering both Coupe and Roadster models is a turbocharged 2.0-litre fourcylinder. The TT shares this engine with others in the VW family – not that there’s anything wrong with that, since this motor is one of the most respected in the industry.

While on paper its 220 horsepower and 258 footpounds of torque doesn’t stand out, it works extremely well in the real world. It’s capable enough to propel the Audi TT from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds, which is a world-class coupe performance.

All TT’s come with Audi’s famed quattro all-wheel drive system, which was freshly updated. This allows the TT to corner faster and smoother than in the past. Body roll is also reduced, and while steering feel is light, it is precise and direct.

Managing the power in all TT models is Audi’s six-speed S tronic transmission. Like its AWD system, its transmission is well known as one of the best in the industry. The system shifts quickly and effortlessly, without taking away any feel or character.

Overall, Audi achieved its goal of making the TT a true sports car. While it certainly lives in the shadow of the R8 supercar, the TT is easier to live with as a day-to-day car, and it can still be fun on a twisty road.

At first glance, while the cabin is certainly luxurious, the minimalistic design brings confusion – where are the controls? But it doesn’t take very long to realize the Audi TT’s interior is ahead of its time.

Where most modern cars have a touchscreen in the centre stack, in the Audi TT that area is notably sparse. Instead, all pertinent information is displayed on the 12-inch screen in the instrument panel right in front of the driver. It is highly customizable, and features such as navigation and the backup camera can be viewed as full screen or split with other details.

The centre of the dash houses three round, elegant air vents. While they have a classic look, they are revolutionary because they also control the climate controls, including the heated seat controls, as one unit.

On the topic of vents, Roadster models have heaters in the seat backs to keep your neck warm on those cold days when you still want to drive with the top down.

The front seats in the TT are immensely comfortable. Ergonomics are excellent; even tall drivers will have room.

onnaught skaters and coaches were all eyes and ears for their biennial camp that featured two of the country’s top figure skating mentors.

About 60 of the Richmond club’s competitive skaters took part in the Grassroots to Champions Spring Seminar at the Richmond Ice Centre. The three-day event featured Montreal-based coach Yvan Desjardins and Toronto choreographer Joey Russell. The pair offered their expertise as local athletes get ready for another competitive cycle, starting with the spring season.

Desjardins’ skaters include Nicolas Nadeau who is fresh off finishing second at the World Junior Champioships.

Russell made his second recent trip to Richmond, on top of his regular duties working with skaters at the renowned Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club, where he teams up with Brian Orser, one of the top coaches in the world.

“Yvan looked after the technical development and Joey the choreography and performance aspect of it,” explained Connuaght director of programs Keegan Murphy.

“We all learned tons and it was a really nice break for the kids to hear the same things (we are teaching them) in a different way with a different voice. It’s just really refreshing and it’s a perfect time of year, with the starting of a new competitive season, to do something like this.”

The skaters were divided into groups of 12 based on ability. The seminars are rotated each spring with the club’s annual show which will return in 2017.

It’s the first time Desjardins has assisted Connaught skaters. He is based out École Excellence Rosemére where he works with legendary coach Manon Perron in Skate Canada’s High Performance Mentrio Program.

He recently became just the 13th coach in the country to achieve the maximum Level 5 certification with the National Coaching Certification Program. He has been working with skaters for over 20 years.

“It’s not often you get access to Quebec coaches and they produce such a huge number of amazing skaters,” added Murphy. “We are lucky to have him, as well as the great relationship we have with Joey.”

Connaught skaters and coaches will now take their new knowledge back to regular training sessions, leading up to2016 Super Series Victoria Day, slated for next month in Surrey.

he Best of the West Gymnastics Fest is coming to the Richmond Olympic Oval May 5-8.

Hosted by Delta Gymnastic Society, the celebration features a combination of three events, making it the largest gymnastics event in the province.

With approximately two weeks to go, the organizing committee is asking for the support of volunteers to be at the heart of this big stage for the sport.

“The Best of the West Gymnastics Fest includes the Western Canadian Gymnastics Championship, with teams representing all four western provinces and two territories; the BC Provincial Gymnaestrada, a Gymnastics For All program which attracts 600 participants from across the province; and the annual Delta Invitational event,” explains Ana Arciniega, Best of the West Committee Chair.

“We expect approximately 1800 athletes, which means we need an army of enthusiastic volunteers to help us make this event a success.”

The one of a kind festival presents the opportunity to highlight the sport and

Eileen passed peacefully in Richmond, B.C. on April 9, 2016. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick on December 19, 1923, she was predeceased by her loving husband Rod Nelson (2013) and her five brothers and sisters. Eileen came West as a young adult and was a long−time resident of Richmond where she was involved in the community and touched the lives of many. In the last years of her life, she lived independently at Courtyard Gardens where she will be fondly remembered. At her request there will be no formal memorial service.

Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.
