or about five years now, every March we head down to Arizona for a week during spring break. It’s great to visit family and I love the sun — but Arizona?

I can’t say the state has ever been on my bucket list, and I wouldn’t call Phoenix my kind of town — Scottsdale even less so. I love wearing shorts and flip flops, but I don’t golf; I wouldn’t vote Republican, even if I could; and I wouldn’t walk into a public building with my firearm, even if I had one. No kidding on that last point. Arizona is the only state in America that has actually banned the banning of firearms in public buildings. Well, okay, they made an exception for schools. Kids aren’t supposed to bring their shotguns to class, but you’re welcome to take your revolver into a library or a post office if said building doesn’t have a metal detector, which most don’t. As one reporter put it, “happiness is a warm gun in a public institution.”

When visiting, we stay in a town just north east of Phoenix, where the residents are generally retired, Caucasian and affluent. The workers, on the other hand, tend to be Latinos who can’t afford to live where they work.

In the town centre is a pretty, open park featuring brass sculptures celebrating some famous American presidents — well, famous Republican presidents. Not even Kennedy or Roosevelt warranted a casting in this town.

So, when we saw it was here that Donald Trump would hold his rally just ahead of the Arizona primaries, perhaps it shouldn’t have been a surprise. But if there is one thing Arizona has taught me, there are always surprises.

For example, I never would have thought some of the most beautiful hikes I’d ever be on would be in the Sonoran Desert. I wouldn’t have thought some of the most radical socialist bookstores I’d peruse would be in Tucson.

And as far as the “warm gun” goes, plenty of businesses sported signs featuring a gun in a circle with a line drawn through it.

Back to the Trump rally, yes, he garnered a large, loud crowd, but a few chained themselves to cars parked in the middle of the road to protest, while others booed the billionaire and gave him the thumbs down.

As with everything, the longer you look the more you see, which reminds me of Barbara Kingsolver’s first novel, The Bean Tree People, set in Tucson. The title comes from a flowering and fruitful plant that grows on the edge of an otherwise barren play park known more for the abundance of dog poop. I don’t intend to compare Arizona to Doggy Doo Park, as it’s called in the book. But I do note the wonder of looking a little closer, seeing the brilliant cactus flowering in a harsh dry land, the dramatic, red rock formations of the Superstition Mountains, and appreciating the fact there is a lot more to this state, and all communities, including Richmond, than any stereotype allows.

Dear Editor, Re: “Centre’s ball players making a racquet,” News, March 23.

It is amazing that bureaucrats, when faced with a problem, will always take the line of least resistance.

In this case, punish some of South Arm’s most loyal, enthusiastic and considerate members — albeit a smaller number — because of their age and slow recovery from injuries.

With all the different community centres in Richmond, plus the new

one on Minoru and the Olympic Oval, it is inconceivable that the brain trust at city hall, plus the crew at South Arm cannot find a more equitable answer than to reduce the two racquetball courts to one.

This decision shows how little understanding the centre personnel has for the sport.

Having six to 12 people playing doubles allows very little down time as the pairs change every 10 to 12 minutes and everybody

has a great time playing and socializing.

With one court this is not possible, and will kill the sport in Richmond.

All this group wants to do is play, why take this away from them?

I believe this decision has more to do with revenue input than space available and those responsible should leave things as they are so the players can play.

Avoid a Trump, reform elections Dear Editor, Re: “Mayor Trump? It can happen,” News, March 18.

Could Canada elect a Trump? It is less likely. The American constitution, centered on Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness, fosters individualism at the expense of the common good.

Canada’s constitutional focus of Peace, Order and Good Government has nurtured a social order that

cushions the callousness of rugged individualism.

For example, inequality in Canada is less severe, but for how much longer?

Stephen Harper moved us into the U.S. orbit endangering Canadian distinctiveness.

How very important that we remain Canadians and that new immigrants be introduced to the distinctiveness of Canadian culture and its values.

In addition, Canada can do something very practical and effective to make a Trump phenomenon less likely.

We should change the voting system such that a mayor, for example, cannot gain an election with fewer than a majority of all votes cast. The current first-pastthe-post voting system helps extremists attain power.

I’d taken a strategic seat in a corner so I could observe the whole room. I saw couples, families, individuals, seemingly from all over the world. The air rang with laughter and chatter. I could identify a few languages, but there were more I couldn’t understand.

It made me think about the language problems we’re having in Richmond, which have been causing waves of discontent.

And yet here, in this room, total harmony prevailed, notwithstanding the hodge-podge of customers’ cultural backgrounds. As I walked through the store I noticed that all signage seemed to be in English. No attempts were made to cater to any nationality in particular, to attract more customers by addressing them in their native tongue.

The Ikea store was in western Canada, and English is the language spoken here. This fact didn’t appear to cause any problems — instead, it seemed to me that it had the power to draw everyone together.

ichmond RCMP are investigating the discovery of two bullet fragments found inside a residence in the 11000 block of Oldfield Avenue, near Cambie and No. 5 roads.

A resident contacted the police shortly before 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 20 to report the discovery. Police believe a firearm was discharged and directed at the home some 10 hours earlier. No injuries have been reported.

But he’s certainly not washed up when it comes to being a force in the realm of competitive Pokémon video gaming.

In fact, the accounting student feels his years spent building up experience and knowledge of the characters in the game count as a plus that recently helped him win a regional competi-

tion held in the Portland suburb of Clackamas, Oregon.

“I guess I’m kinda old.

ancouver International Airport has strengthened its hold as the “preferred connecting hub” between Asia and the Americas, according to its CEO Craig Richmond, after he announced Tuesday that a fifth mainland-Chinese airline will soon service direct flights to Sea Island.

The new three-flights-per-week link is expected to bring an estimated 10,000 additional Chinese tourists to the region, with many expected to stay and visit in Richmond. It will also add about 100 jobs at the airport, according to Richmond.

The announcement was welcome news for Richmond city councillor Chak Au, who said the addition of Xiamen Airlines at YVR is “important to the air traffic business and also for trade and business in Richmond.”

Xiamen, a city of about 3.8 million people (metro) on the southern coast of China (Fujian Province), is, coincidently, one of Richmond’s four sister cities.

Au said he has visited China four times in the last three years, including several stops in Xiamen to discuss a direct route to Richmond with airline executives, as well as local politicians.

“I have always said that in Richmond we should focus our development not on real estate, but use our assets like the airport to build Richmond as an international trade hub.” said Au, noting

Au said the Chinese officials were at first hesitant to add the direct link, but were eventually convinced of the economic spinoffs.

“This is good for Richmond, for job creation. We can strengthen our relationship with Xiamen both in terms of market and investment,” said Au, touting a potential uptick in local high-tech and biomedical industries.

The non-stop flights will begin in July, said Richmond. “This is the first time Xiamen Airlines will offer service to North America,” he noted.

Xiamen is an important port city and a popular tourist destination with tree-lined beaches, added Richmond, who was joined by Richmond Centre MLA and B.C.’s Minister of International

Trade Teresa Wat, Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie and China’s Acting Consul General Fan Xiadong at the announcement in YVR’s international departures terminal.

“This new route will provide access to new markets for business and leisure for Canadians and Chinese people alike.

It also offers great connections,” said Richmond.

If the tourism numbers pan out, the new flights could mean a boon for Tourism Richmond, which rakes in a two per cent tax on sanctioned hotel room stays.

According to Destination Canada, the federal government agency tasked to monitor and promote tourism, overnight trips to Canada from China increased every year between 2007-2014, as China shifted from Canada’s sixth largest source of overseas visitors in 2010 to its third in 2014.

ebruary 14, 2016 was a first for Google’s self-driving car, but not a complete success.

Rather it involved the right side of a Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority bus hit near Google headquarters in Silicon Valley by a self-driving Lexus RX450h attempting to navigate around some sandbags in a wide lane at a speed of 2 mph.

The bus was reportedly going only 15 mph, but the collision damaged the side and front of the Lexus. A report released by California’s Department of Motor Vehicles said that Google’s self-driving Lexus and its test driver “believed the bus would slow or allow the Google vehicle to continue.” No one suffered injury and the car was eventually towed.

This first is unlikely to gain the infamy of the‘first’ that occurred on August 17, 1896, when Mrs. Bridgette Driscol of Croydon entered the history books as the first pedestrian fatality in the UK prompting, as folklore would have it, Coroner Morrison to say at the inquest into her death— “This must never happen again.” (Mr. Morrison is also credited with being the first Coroner to apply the term “accident” to a death caused by a speeding vehicle.)

Nevertheless the Croydon ‘first’ came to mind on hearing Google say to CNBC, “In this case, we clearly bear some responsibility, because if our car hadn’t moved there wouldn’t have been a collision. … “From now on, [as a result of software changes] our cars will more deeply understand that buses (and other large

vehicles) are less likely to yield to us than other types of vehicles, and we hope to handle situations like this more gracefully in the future.”

In other words, this test failure will at least have prompted the development of one more self-driving algorithm in the already massive set of self-driving algorithms Google is developing that should ensure this type of incident will not, in fact, happen again. …And isn’t this just the whole point of the self-driving car—that it will usher in the long hoped for ‘zero-crash’ future? Reports of this incident add that while other Google cars have been involved in incidents, this may be the first time the company has admitted any fault, that all of the [other] 17 accidents in Google driverless cars since January [2016] have been caused by human error—but that Google still believes the cars will be road-ready by 2020.

In furtherance of this belief, Google has reportedly responded to a US Department of Transportation invitation for industry input on ways to speed self-driving technology to public roads—provided it is proven to be safe—by asking Congress to create new federal powers that would give it “special, expedited permission to bring to market a self-driving car that has no steering wheel or pedals.”

A self-driving vehicle is currently not permitted under U.S. federal regulation. Google, however, has been testing just such a vehicle (presumably under appropriate human supervision) on public roads in California and elsewhere, and believes it will be ready sooner than the public expects, and in pushing for this regulatory change is demonstrating confidence in the technology’s safety and readiness.

omebuilder Gurjote Jhaj isn’t quite sure what to make of the recent developments in the housing market.

Even $5 million is a crazy price for a Richmond house,” says Jhaj, speaking to the Richmond News in a Brighouse neighbourhood that features wide lots and paved concrete sidewalks lined with trees, not to mention one of the highest concentrations of economic-class immigrants in the country.

Jhaj’s family-based demolition and homebuilding company is busy these days, tearing down the same homes it built only 10-20 years ago. One home, built in 1992 with an original selling price of $280,000, sold last January for $2.2 million; it was torn down by Jhaj and a new home was built on the property, which promptly sold last month for $4.9 million.

Ley points out that between 2002 and 2014, about 60,000 investorclass immigrants landed in Metro Vancouver. Data shows a high concentration of “business class” immigrants in Vancouver’s Westside, West Vancouver and tracts of Richmond, including the aforementioned Brighouse neighbourhood, City Centre and Terra Nova.

Ley says an unpublished map of investor immigrants shows a “clear ring around the airport.”

UBC geographer Dr. Dan Hiebert, who mined much of that data, notes there isn’t precise proof the investor-class immigrants are buying high-end real estate, such as single-family homes.

However, Hiebert says immigrants on the whole are buying homes in Vancouver “at a rate that’s higher than expected given their (reported) income,” as well as a rate higher than existing residents.

“It’s an overlap as opposed to a relationship. You don’t have that very specific linkage,” notes Hiebert.

Ley said he would be keeping an eye on a new “super visa” program, which has become popular amongst Chinese nationals because one can enter and exit Canada frequently for 10 years.

“It’s set up ideally for people looking for a seasonal home without any requirements . . . I’ve got a feeling this could be very important. It’s new enough that I haven’t done any focused researche,” says Ley. See Politicians page 13

lready desperate for a permanent women’s homeless shelter, Richmond is at risk of temporarily losing the only such facility for men as real estate prices set record levels month over month.

The Salvation Army’s men’s homeless shelter, a single-family home located on Shell Road, is now up for sale and this has organizers scrambling to find new accommodations.

“We’re beginning talks with Richmond City Hall and BC Housing and are looking to see what’s the best way to move forward,” said Salvation Army Major Kathy Chiu.

“The landlords have been excellent.

They’re going to work on our behalf to negotiate a longer stay,” Chiu added.

One sale already fell through but another prospective buyer told Chiu the Salvation Army could stay open for up to another year.

“It may be someone who just wants to buy as an investment and rent it out for a bit longer,” explained Chiu.

She said they need to get the ball rolling immediately to find a new home, as waiting until the end could seriously jeopardize the well-being of the people who depend on the 10-bed facility.

“We want to make sure there’s an organized discharge, meaning no one is discharged back onto the streets. This creates stability for people,” said Chiu.

A silver lining, she said, is the fact the Salvation Army may now have the opportunity to seek a larger facility and one that can

accommodate women separately.

“We also understand there’s a need for a women’s shelter,” she said.

The new shelter need not be a residential home, but it should be bigger to accommodate 24 beds, which could allow the agency to place people for longer than the maximum 30-day stay. It could be a commercial property, however, it needs to be on a bus line or near services.

“I’d like to take our (30-day) time limit off right now. We’d like to approach (sheltering people) in a way that is unique to the indi-

vidual,” said Chiu.

“If there’s a landlord looking to lease on a long-term basis, we’d be happy to talk,” said Chiu, adding that she’s open to all opportunities out there.

The existing shelter is usually at 100 per cent capacity in the winter and never dips below 60 per cent capacity in the summer.

average wages have only grown 36 per cent between 2001 and 2014, whereas the average home in Vancouver rose 211 per cent.

That leaves offshore investors. According to Ley’s paper, Chinese buyers spent $5 billion on overseas residential real estate in 2010, $52 billion in 2014 and are projected to spend $220 billion by 2020. This week, the Bank of Canada estimated Chinese investors spent about $12.7 billion on real estate in Vancouver in 2015 (one-third of all sales).

Notably, this figure does not include foreign purchasers from other countries.

After much consternation was expressed last year Premier Christy Clark announced she would begin to track foreign home purchases.

But for Ley, even tracking foreign buyers may not result in adequate data.

“Even detecting the existence of foreign buyers is complex because of transnational social networks stretched across the Pacific, allowing local residents or property professionals to stand in as proxy buyers for distant investors,” writes Ley, who nevertheless said

taxation measures on foreigners could be a first step. Furthermore, Ley says in addition to addressing transnational wealth migration, B.C.’s real estate industry requires a thorough audit, pointing to recent media reports of tax loopholes in the real estate market, such as “shadow flipping.”

“Ticking a box only means something if we know it’s accurate. What we’ve seen is misstatements have not been unusual in the real estate industry.”

Earlier this month FINTRAC reportedly found real estate firms’ reporting of money laundering is significantly below standards.

The Canadian Real Estate Council denied the allegations.

Shopping for clothes at a seniors home Guest columnist discovers unique business at residence NADINEJONES Guest Columnist

eople who call old age “the golden years” are full of it — and I don’t mean gold.

But in this scenario, good things do happen especially for residents of participating seniors’ residences like The Maples Residences.

At aged 93, I really don’t go running out to stores but believe it or not, stores come to me.

For example, a couple of weeks ago I wanted a new blouse for a special occasion.

Lack of mobility precluded shopping around. But advertised on the Bulletin Board of this residence was that one of the two visiting clothiers, FashionCloset and CoCo, was arriving on a certain date and time.

The vendor coming within days was FashionCloset As promised, the clothes arrived, hanging and swaying on six metal, wheeled racks carrying both men’s and women’s wear.

For women, there were skirts and blouses, slacks and jackets and dresses in all sizes, colours and designs for our selection.

The men’s single rack wasn’t as

fully stocked but then neither are men’s needs.

Nevertheless, there were men’s shirts, pants, and sweaters all with a varied selection of sizes and colours.

Being very curious, I wanted to learn more about this helpful service so I cornered the owner and this is what I found.

Fashion Closet’s vendor is named Heather. She told me she prides herself on buying Canadian whenever she can and from other wholesalers where she can purchase new clothes inexpensively and sell them to us at down-to-earth prices.

“I just wish I could buy more plus sizes but they are hard to come by,” said this slim 54-year-old who has been in the business for six years.

I asked her about the physical effort required to trundle in such heavy racks loaded with clothing.

“I have a retired lady friend who helps me and she and I have it down to a science. I am lucky to have an ex-Handi Dart bus which easily holds all the secured racks. They are on wheels so with ramps they really don’t present a problem.”

This busy lady travels many kilometres a week servicing almost 40 facilities from Chilliwack to West Vancouver.

She loves her four-to-five-day work week but says, “The business is by guess and by golly and customers have specific needs, so I can’t always please everyone. I wish I could.”

She buys for months ahead, “That way I can plan holidays. For instance, I have bought everything I need until next November.”

No butchers or bakers or candlestick makers make the rounds to Seniors’ homes — at least not this one — but with FashionCloset and CoCo, we residents are well-supplied with choices of clothing.

Three jewelers plus Purdy’s Chocolates also make their offerings available.

Purdy’s scrumptious chocolates are always popular as gifts — or for home consumption.

I personally am not in the market for jewelry but a lot of residents love to inspect and buy glitter and bling.

Heather is equipped to take cash or cards so after trying on a few blouses in my suite, I happily bought two at $31 each including tax.

I also received a lot of information to pass on to you about an interesting and quite unique business.

“Creative” in part because recreating native methods completely would be impractical.

“I’m not going to dig a hole in the middle of the restaurant, build a fire and cook a whole kangaroo. So what I’m trying to do is use the basic ingredients and then modernize them with modern cooking techniques, presentation and flavours.”

Charcoal Lane, named after a local meeting place for Aboriginal people (and the title of a song by native songwriter Archie Roach), also has a second purpose, although its top-shelf service and décor don’t make that immediately evident: it was begun to give Aboriginals and other disadvantaged Australians training in the hospitality industry.

Formerly a branch of the Victorian Aboriginal health service, it’s now operated by Mission Australia in conjunction with other non-profits.

It also has backing from commercial sponsors including Accor Hotels.

Some of Charcoal Lane’s graduates end up working for the hotel group’s Sofitel Melbourne.

There are typically four people training back of house, with 10 more out front.

Some are here to build on existing qualifications while others hope to start new careers.

Although much of Melbourne stands on land belonging to the Wurundjiri people, trainees come from tribes as far away as Darwin, and a few of the menu ingredients are as unfamiliar to them as they are to visitors.

Hampton’s kitchen is full not only of emu and wallaby, as well as local lamb and pork, but of assorted leaves, which although come from Australian eucalypti, produce an astonishing range of familiar scents when torn to release their oils.

These include lemon, aniseed, mango, mint, strawberry and other berries, which Hampton adapts appropriately, along with seasoning from native peppercorns and saltbush.

The pan-seared emu fillet, with beetroot and lemon myrtle risotto, caramelized golden beets,

sea parsley and crispy shallot salad, is delicious, and rightly amongst the restaurant’s most popular dishes.

Here, everything is stimulating, and its unfamiliarity deserves respect.

The challenge, says Hampton, is to get customers to see the food not just as a novelty, and to come back.

ichmond Public Library’s Brighouse branch hosted a one-of-a-kind, special edition of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) ACES on Tuesday.

Participants were treated to two compelling presentations by Richmond student Ray Liu, 17, and Vancouver’s Austin Wang, Grade 12.

Both have received international acclaim and multiple awards for their science fair projects.

Ray presented his research on robotics and computer-controlled laser technology. He designed a robotic device that uses motion detection and tracking software to track a moving target, and aims a laser to repel the target from advancing.

“Right now, I’m working on a solvent polymer deposition 3D printer,” said Ray. “I think it’s important to try a bit of everything.”

His passion for engineering and science began with taking apart a transistor radio and

Austin shared how his “basic science fair project” that investigated the energy output of bacteria, raised a plethora of questions that prompted him to keep digging deeper.

Those questions led to an in-depth project where he determined the sequence of bacteria genes with the highest energy output.

Austin is one of the eight students selected to represent Canada at the world’s largest and most prestigious science fair, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair this May. raig Richmond is used to seeing things take off. As president and CEO of Vancouver International Airport it kinda comes with the territory.

But last week, when YVR was named the best airport in North America for the seventh consecutive year in a row, he said he managed to see a little more than just a steady rise.

“You know, if we were a sports team it would be a dynasty,” Richmond quipped.

“We really appreciate the acknowledgement and about 10 seconds after you win you start thinking about how we get even better and stay on top.”

That, Richmond said, is one the main keys behind the consistent success YVR has enjoyed in being a frequent winner in the Skytrax World Airport Awards that are based on 13.2 million passenger surveys conducted in 555 airports around the world.

Richmond said YVR is not chasing the award.

“We’re just trying to provide the best airport, the best experience possible,” he said, adding there’s no specific winning formula when it comes to trying to do well in the survey.

“It’s hard to describe because this is one of those surveys that we’re not even sure when it takes place. It’s over at least six months, and I’ve even heard as long as eight months.

There’s 13 million people who vote, and it’s across 39 separate categories,” he said. “So, it’s pretty hard to focus on any one thing, because if you don’t end up in the top one or two in those categories, you’re not going to win.”

That means all of the services the airport provides the 20 or so million people who pass through the Sea Island terminals have to be at their very best, all the time.

“The formula is thinking about every part of the customer’s journey and how to make it easier, better, cleaner and more friendly in every way,” Richmond said. “And then we have to continue to do that as we add a million passengers a year.”

In that department, YVR has shown dramatic increases since it took over operations in 1992 from Transport Canada.

In the first year of running the airport, YVR had just under 10 million passengers pass through the terminal buildings.

In 2015, that figure had soared to 20.3 million.

The only times YVR has experienced a drop in passenger traffic was a three-year stretch following the 911 events in New York City that sent a chill through the global air travel n Craig Richmond industry, and a slight two-year dip after the stock market correction in 2008.

With sights set firmly on handling 25 million passengers by 2020, Richmond said YVR will continue to try and improve on it’s core business of moving people and goods through the Sea Island terminals.

But, with all the accolades and rising passenger numbers, is there a chance the Airport Improvement Fee (AIF) will be scaled back or even removed entirely from YVR? Richmond said no.

“There was maybe a misconception at the beginning, and there was a lot of controversy when we brought it in, that OK, we will get to a certain level (passengers) and stop, ” he said. “But what happens when you add millions of more passengers and have new airlines come on you’ve got to continue to both upgrade what you have and build new.”

Richmond pointed out that YVR’s AIF is the lowest of all major airports in Canada.

“Calgary and Edmonton are $30, we’re at $20,” Richmond said.

And YVR has managed to reduce landing and terminal fees for the airlines touching down here.

“We’re doing everything we can to induce more carriers to come here,” he said, “because that brings more jobs to the airport and the local economy.

“No, the AIF is not going away. But we are very cognizant of using it wisely.”

On the subject of “We’ll stick to our core business, which of course is to move people and airlines very efficiently. So, we can increase the positive economic impact for British Columbia.

“Yes, one of our goals is to get to 25 million passengers, and so far we are on track to have that by 2020.”

“One of the reasons we do things like the designer outlet mall is as a non-for-profit corporation any money we make goes back into running the airport.”

Another money spinner for YVR that is more linked with travel is the development of automated passport kiosks that have been sold across North America and the Caribbean.

“We’re always looking at expansions,” Richmond said. “This year, we’ll hit 21 million passengers, while the terminal was designed for 25 (million). So, now we’re looking at how to expand the terminal to accommodate that growth so people won’t feel crowded and so we can actually gate all the extra aircraft we will be getting.”

All the while, the goal is to also preserve a nice sense of space inside the sprawling terminal.

“We want to keep that relatively small airport feel,” he said.

YVR ranked third in the world in that 20 to 30 million passenger airport category, behind Kansai (Osaka, Japan) and Zurich (Switzerland) airports.

Rapids finish fourth overall in club standings Mark Booth

Richmond Rapids contingent of 39 athletes brought home 29 medals from the recent Provincial AAA Short Course Championships in Victoria.

The meet represented the end of the short course season and the culmination of training since September. Across all age groups combined, the Rapids finished with 135 individual swims and 18 relays ranked in the top 16. This included 22 individual medals, and seven relay medals to finish fourth overall in the club standings.

Sam Pei earned bronze in the 400 freestyle, but was a threat for the podium in five other events — finishing fourth each time. Alex Ball came in second overall in the 50 freestyle. Also on the sprint side, Wendy Yang won gold in the 50 freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly. Her 100 fly swim earned her a bronze.

Both Ryan Murray and Dimitri Volchkov won the 200 backstroke in their age group, while Will MacDougall earned a bronze in 11 and under category.

Amanda McCallum defended her 50 and 100 metre backstroke titles, while earning bronze in the 200 IM. Jessy Barton-Jensen also came home with third place medals in the 50 and 100 backstroke. Joshua Quon earned a silver in the 50 backstroke after a fantastic start from deep in lane eight.

The club was also strong in the breaststroke events.

tres. Serena Xue earned a gold, silver, and bronze in the 50, 200, and 100 distances, respectively. Rich Rakchtis was on the podium for all three events as well, with gold in the 50 and 200, and silver in the 100.

For relays, the Girls 12 and under 4x50 freestyle (Charlie Ford, Jessy Barton-Jensen, Isabella Villasenor, Lily Douglas), and 4x50 medley (Barton-Jensen, Douglas, Samantha McCallum, Ford) both earned bronze medals. This broke a long-running medal drought for the Rapids in the 12 and under girls category, and set a team record in the 4x50 freestyle.

The senior girls both scored two bronze medals as well, also in the 4x50 freestyle (Devon Mark, Wendy Yang, Serena Xue, Amanda McCallum) and the 4x50 Medley (Dini McIver, Xue, Mark, Yang). The two senior girls relays and the 14&Under 4x100 medley also set club records.

On the men’s side, the senior boys (Alex Ball, Michael Ge, Jerry Liu, Adrian Hsing) team finished third in the 4x50 Free.

The 13-14 Boys crew (Matthew Crawford, Samuel Pei, Artur Yushko, Ethan Chan) was the most successful of the bunch, earning silver in the 4x50 medley and gold in the 4x50 freestyle.

Other club records broken included a pair by Charlie Ford, beating her own 800 freestyle and breaking a 10-year-old record in the 400. Amanda McCallum had three herself: the 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke, and 200 IM. Isabella Villasenor, in her first provincial championships, earned one in the 100 fly. backstroke records. Serena Xue earned four records, three in breaststroke and one in the 400 IM. Ethan Chan also accomplished a pair in the 200- and 400-meter freestyles.

Adding to the success in rankings, Rapids athletes achieved new qualification standards. Matthew Crawford qualified for Western Nationals for the first time, scoring cuts in all three backstroke events. Serena Xue and Wendy Yang both added Canadian National Trials cuts, increasing the number of swims they are allowed at Olympic Trials next month.

In addition to competing at provincials, the club is also prepping for upcoming

events in Toronto.

Alex Ball, Serena Xue, Wendy Yang, Nic Dekker, Emily De Boer and Jonathan Dieleman will be competing at Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Trials. Teams for the Canadian Olympic and Junior National Team will be chosen based on the results of this meet.

Additionally, Amanda McCallum, Ethan Chan, and Richard Rakchtis were selected to represent Team BC in this year’s Provincial Prospects Camp.

To be selected, they had to be ranked in the Top 10 nationally in one of six stroke categories. Coach Drew McClure was also named as a staff member.

Female hockey championship draws in record fans Guest Column

istory was made on March 13 as the Calgary Inferno hoisted the Clarkson Cup for the first time.

But Calgary’s victory was not the only milestone achieved at the close of this year’s Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) season. The game — played for the first time in an NHL arena — drew a record 4,082 fans.

And, oh yes, Hayley Wickenheiser had done

it again. As the first non-goalie woman to ever play full-time professional hockey, Wickenheiser has won the most gold medals of any Canadian Olympian.

With the CWHL championship, Wickenheiser has now won at every professional level of women’s hockey and she is but one of a crop of amazing women who make this an exciting time for their sport. Their dedication is even more admirable considering the battle they have had to endure.

Organized women’s hockey has been played in Canada since 1890 but it took a century after the first lines of players hit the ice for the International Ice Hockey Federa-

tion (IIHF) to sanction a women’s hockey tournament. Shockingly, it took the Olympics until 1998 to include the sport in the Winter Games. Although women had to wait almost 75 years after men’s hockey was included in the Games, women’s hockey is one of the most anticipated events.

Canada’s history with women’s hockey has had other low points. In 1956, the Ontario Supreme Court banned girls from playing in boys’ leagues. Nine-year-old Abigail Hoffman was an aspiring athlete who loved playing hockey. In the absence of a girls’ league, she resorted to pretending to be a boy, cutting her hair short and registering to play as “Ab.”

JESSICA JONES Jessica Jones had a leading role in a historic season for the McMath Wildcats senior girls basketball team. The Grade 12 guard helped the Wildcats reach the provincial “AAA” championship game for the first time in school history, ending a 19-year drought for Richmond schools as well.

She was named a first team tournament all-star and earlier was MVP of the Lower Mainland AAA Crehan Cup and Richmond Championships as McMath dominated both playoff tournaments. She will be continuing her basketball career at Simon Fraser University next season. The Richmond News is proud to recognize Jessica as Athlete of the Month for March.

Hoffman wasn’t intentionally pushing the existing social barriers placed on girls; she just wanted to play hockey — defence, to be exact.

She excelled in the game and was named an all-star but when her gender was discovered, the league immediately banned her.

Her family filed a lawsuit but the courts ruled in favour of the league, barring Hoffman from playing competitive hockey.

CWHL: Athletes play for the game, not pay From page 27 opportunities as their male counterparts.

Like Wickenheiser and many other unsung female hockey stars, CWHL athletes play for the love of the game. While NHL players are getting annual paycheques in the millions, top-notch women hockey players are not being paid a cent — not even those who have earned five Olympic medals, a feat unmatched by any male hockey player.

Talks of implementing salaries are underway in the CWHL. This is a smart and long-overdue move. Although these women are playing for the true love of the game, without some compensation, the pool of athletes will decline.

Of course, recognition through compensation is only one avenue. The sport of women’s hockey also deserves to see more sponsorship, more TV airtime and more media coverage.

As fans, we can participate in this exciting momentum for the game of women’s hockey by simply showing up or tuning in. At my home, my daughters and I look forward annually to the Beanpot Classic and Frozen Four championship — U.S. college events — as much as the NHL playoffs. They might recognize big names like Crosby and Toews but my daughters are really more interested in amazing women like Wickenheiser, Marie-Philip Poulin, Hilary Knight and Michelle Picard.

In fact, my three year-old has watched so much female hockey that the first time she saw a televised NHL game, she exclaimed, “Daddy, look! Men are playing hockey!” To her, men were playing a girls’ game.

Next week, the IIHF Women’s World Championship will be held in Kamloops and my daughters and I will be there cheering on some of the best athletes. Women’s hockey is a fast, exciting and skillful game that is gaining momentum and making history. It’s time to pay attention.

Learning the perils of overtraining A

dmittedly up until this point in my season there hasn’t been much conflict. Things have been going along as planned and I had been reaping the benefits of that in training and racing.

But a story without conflict is a pretty boring story… and you can see where this is going.

After coming home from Australia, I jumped headfirst back into training, racking up over 300 kilometres in my two weeks home. I had been feeling tired and flat, but I trudged forward naively thinking I would bounce back.

Entering race week I was still feeling incredibly flat and my workouts were showing it.

The day I left for Japan, I finally decided to back off a little bit and give myself a day off. I hopped on the plane to Japan assuming that not training that morning would be enough to leave me sufficiently rested to race well.

Obviously one day off after probably three weeks of being on the edge of over-trained and under-rested is not enough to fix the problem. The morning of the race came and I was feeling pretty good. I came to this race specifically to go fast and it seemed

silly to change that plan. I went off with the leaders and our first two kilometres was seven seconds quicker than my previous fastest two-kilometre split in a race. And that was pretty much it for me. By three kilometres, I was already slowing and the remaining 17 were a mental struggle not to drop out. I ended up walking 1:22:07, over two minutes slower than my goal time had been.

Reflecting on the race I’m sure I could have gone at least 30 seconds quicker had I not gone out so hard at the beginning. But at the same time I don’t regret that decision at all.

This was the race where conditions were perfect and it was silly to not try for something special. In fact that is just what my teammate Inaki Gomez did and he was rewarded with a new Canadian record, smashing the existing record by over 30 seconds and walking 1:19:20.

Every good story also needs conflict resolution. Moving forward my focus is now on recovery. Overtraining can ruin an entire year or more and so I have to be incredibly diligent and smart moving forward.

My next race is in May, the World Race Walking Team Championships in Rome where two years ago we missed out on a medal by one point despite being huge underdogs.

This year we will go into it as one of the favourites, a new territory for us but one we’ve seen ourselves as belonging to for a long time. Before that though I will be heading to Flagstaff, Arizona for some distraction free training at altitude.

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart we announce the sudden passing of Darlene Wendy Campbell on Monday, March 6, 2016 in Surrey, BC. Darlene was born in Vancouver, BC but grew up in Richmond. She graduated high school from McNair Senior Secondary School. After traveling the world, she spent many years working for BC Tel/Telus.

After meeting her partner, Joey, they moved together for a 7 year adventure in Calgary, AB. While there, Darlene worked for Alberta Health Services and was proud to make a difference in the people in her community. Darlene spent her final year back in BC being closer to family and lifelong friends. She was proud to get a job with Canada Post.

Darlene was a beautiful and loving daughter, sister, friend, and fishing companion. She was a very special person who left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She was artistic and had a knack for style. No one loved fishing and the outdoors more than Darlene. She would be the first one on the lake in the morning and would not want to come home till dark. She was so full of wit, spirit and life and had a unique way of making everyone around her smile.

Her memory is survived by her parents Ken and Nena, her brother Rick (Lucy), her partner Joey, grandmother Olga, aunt Doreen and uncle Gary, uncle Ray (Pauline) and aunt Gloria, best friends Diane and Lynn, extended family and many friends and co−workers.
