an you smell it? It’s in the air again.

It’s the heated debate about the stench coming from Harvest Power as it busily “digests” our organic waste.

Apart from mega homes and Chinese-only signs, complaints about the recycling plant on No. 7 and Blundell roads have taken up their fair share of space in our letters pages over the past six months.

Some folks have complained about suffering migraines because of the poor air quality, others talked about being held captive in their own homes to avoid the overpowering smell.

I live in Steveston and can’t say I’ve ever really noticed the smell, but I don’t doubt others do, and if people are suffering, there’s reason to change.

Harvest Power claims it’s a victim of its own success. As municipalities around the Lower Mainland have introduced the organic recycling program, the incredible volume Harvest Power now has to deal with is what’s creating a stink. However, the company, also admits it has “dropped the ball” on the odour control file, and says it is now implementing some changes.

Obviously, we are on the right track with the recycling, and lots of it. We know too much about climate change to go back to throwing our veggies in the trash with our catfood cans and cereal boxes. But it’s also unacceptable, not to mention unhealthy, to be inhaling fumes from this kind of operation.

Metro Vancouver, which issues the permit to Harvest Power, agrees the company is making some modifications, but it also says more could be done. Although this kind of organic recycling plant is the first of its kind around here, we are decades behind many European countries when it comes to recycling, and it’s hard to believe they’re all walking around with nose plugs.

The key is cost. Harvest Power is a for-profit company, and while it may like the idea of saving the planet, its first objective is to make money, and purchasing cutting-edge technology to reduce odour may also reduce the company’s bottom line.

However, if Harvest Power thinks upgrading the plant to effectively deal with the odour will undermine its economic viability, so be it.

They can move on. In fact, it might be argued this is a job better suited to municipalities anyway, or some kind of not-for-profit where the primary goal is to provide service.

The fact is, we have to recycle our organic waste. At this point, it’s inexcusable to do anything but. It’s also a fact people have the right to breath clean air. If the mantra of “economic viability” is tripping us up on either point, we need to look at a different model, a model where the objective is something richer than profit.

I would like to commend Peter Liu for organizing the meeting on community safety for Chinese-Canadian seniors.

According to Alan Campbell’s excellent report about this get-together, it appears to have been a very successful effort.

Initiatives like these go a long way in promoting mutual goodwill and intercultural harmony. Richmond has now become a major centre for the Chinese–Canadian community. This community has made a commendable contribution to the growth and development of Canada for a long time.

Unfortunately, issues such as Chinese-only signage and strata council proceedings in Mandarin have overshadowed the great work of this community.

Favouring a certain group can be very harmful to the harmony of a community.

City council is not setting a good example by helping one ethnic group and not the others. It could be compared to parents who pay more attention to one of their children than to the others.

This creates disharmony within the family and the same holds true in a community.

Most immigrants come to this country by their own choosing and it is therefore in their own interest to adapt to the laws and official language(s) of the country.

If you choose to move to another country, it is your own responsibility to learn the official language. Yes, more English teachers are needed, but not at the taxpayers’ expense.

I think most Chinese immigrants are very eager to learn English. But it seems this city council has different rules for different ethnic groups.

The bottom line is, for the sake of good harmony in the community, everyone should be treated equally.

Dear mayor and councillors, As a business-oriented citizen and long-time former director of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, I’m very concerned about the ongoing changing of zoning from industrial/commercial to higher density residential in Richmond.

This is alarming, as I see this as a severe loss to our business community of small and medium size businesses, who statistically are the employers of about 80 per cent of B.C.s workforce.

The loss of 40 acres of industrial land in Steveston (The BC Packers Land) was just the beginning. The loss continued around the Olympic Oval, at the north end of No. 4 Road on Hollybridge and Alderbridge Way, Capstan Way, along the No. 3 Road corridor, with Lansdowne Shopping Centre and the industrial land south of Westminster Hwy and No. 2 Road next.

Most was converted to apartments and highrises at a higher density.

Lost to us, the residents, are the shops we frequented: Art Knapp on Alderbridge Way, the transmission shop at Capstan Way, the car rental at No. 3 Road, where my visitors from Europe rented their cars, Hype clothing store on No. 3 Road, the old Richmond News office and soon the RONA hardware

store, to name a few.

The loss of industrial/commercially zoned land is to the detriment of our local business community and must be of concern to mayor and council, the Richmond Chamber of Commerce and any owner of any business.

Where and when will the City of Richmond replace these lost industrial/commercial zones? It is necessary to do so.

It’s detrimental to the zoning make up of Richmond and represents a negative change in Richmond’s emphasis on business development.

My question to the mayor and councillors is: What kind of a city do we want to be? Do we want to be a bedroom community, where people live but have to work out of town and where few business services are available. Or do we want to create a balance between residential zoning and businesses zoning (commercial/industrial) where employment is available and where business taxes contribute to residential taxes?

Do we prefer a mixture of areas that have residential as well as businesses and other services within a reasonably close proximity? I would say so.

The website WebMD reported earlier this week the results of a study conducted at the Arizona Mayo Clinic.

The study’s author, Dr. Janina Krell-Roesch, found that computer use may help to ward off age-related declines in memory and thinking.

One of the study’s results is that computer use at least once per week was linked to a 42% drop in risk for memory/thinking problems. Of the seniors who did use a computer, only 18% developed mild cognitive impairment (MCI), whereas 31% who did not use a computer developed MCI. The study’s findings will be presented in April at the American Academy of Neurology Annual meeting in Vancouver.

n Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site and the adjacent boardwalk experienced flooding Thursday morning. Due to high tides and a storm surge, the Fraser River covered much of the site in the early hours of the day.

ore than two and half years after a 64-yearold cyclist was killed on a Richmond road, a man has been charged in connection with the death.

The male victim, who has never been named, died after being struck by a car in the 4400 block of No. 5 Road, north of Highway 91, in the early hours of Labour Day, Sept. 2, 2013.

The 64-year-old Richmond man was found on the sidewalk by passing motorists, but a sustained attempt to revive him was unsuccessful.

Police then discovered a licence plate at the scene and were able to track down the alleged driver and vehicle involved.

On Wednesday, Richmond RCMP stated that Roneel Singh, 29, of Vancouver, has been charged with one

that he did what he could, getting someone to call 911 and stopping other motorists for assistance.

But Bailey said any praise going around should be given to a passing motorist, who administered CPR until paramedics arrived.

Bailey had been driving to his nearby home from an all-night drug store and stopped when he saw a bike wheel and helmet in the road and the man lying on the sidewalk, not moving.

He didn’t have a phone so he banged on the door of a nearby residence to get them to call 911. He then went back to the road to flag down help because he didn’t have any medical training.

A motorist stopped and also called 911 on his phone.

“I held his cellphone (connected to emergency services) while he administered CPR for seven to eight minutes before the paramedics arrived,” said Bailey, 33, at the time. “It was really quite amazing.

“The thing that blows my mind is I’m sure he was as convinced as I was that this man was dead already.”

In an emailed statement to the News, the alliance said it plans to “talk to businesses about the types of things a BIA could accomplish in Steveston.

“When we have completed that research with the local Steveston business community we will have information to share with the media.

“We believe Steveston business stakeholders are open minded to working together

to develop ideas and programs to encourage business growth, not only in the busy summer season, but all year long. The SBDA strongly believes, in light of changing economic trends, a proactive approach to building new business is preferable to not having a plan.”

Richmond is one of the few cities in the Lower Mainland that doesn’t have a BIA within its boundaries.

A city staff report that went before city council this week indicated that the main advantage of granting the SBDA’s funding request would be that the long-running matter, of whether the village should or should not have a BIA, would be more likely to be resolved.

However, granting the funds, according to the report, could be interpreted as the city itself supporting a BIA, prior to proper community consultation taking place or that the initiative is led by the city, rather than the business community.

e are bombarded with car advertising and car marketing. We know all the ‘ad’ enticements— Open road along the ocean’s edge, hugging the curves, top speed, wind in your hair, perfect day, perfect bliss in …pick your favourite ride.

Simple to conjure a ‘reality check’: stop/start traffic, rush hour, poor weather, work worries and ‘To Do lists’ transforming your ‘favourite ride’ into a chore. Yet the appeal lingers …or, at least, the car companies hope this is the way it works. We marvel at the super-original ads —‘The Cog’ for Honda, ‘Twinkle, twinkle, little star’ for Nissan’s Juke, Volkswagen’s YaYaYa among the highlights—what the brightest ad minds fuelled by unlimited advertising dollars can create.

Still we remember them …or at least the car companies hope this is the way it works. But for all our collective familiarity with car advertising and marketing, contemplating the ‘whys’ and ‘hows’ of it from the car companies’ perspective is unusual for the average consumer, as is ‘feeling’ for them as they struggle to reach the millennials, the demographic cohort with birth years ranging from the early 1980s to the early 2000s whose growing indifference to obtaining a driver’s license and to car ownership is presenting an unprecedented challenge.

Apparently there is even a sub-set, ‘hipsters’, fashionconscious, educated, socially and politically socialist, and urbane proving the toughest to reach and yet the most desirable because they “hit above their weight financially.”

Millennials are now the dominant generation, nearly

100 million in Canada and the US alone, representing nearly 30 percent of the population and predicted to wield by 2017, when the eldest reach their mid-30s, more than $200-billion in buying power. Marketing experts put it bluntly: “If you buy into the idea that this demographic doesn’t … [care] about cars, and you’re a higher up in the car industry, if we don’t fix this, we’re all sunk.”

At its simplest, target marketing aligns features and benefits with the target’s needs and desires. Millennials are thought to care “more about whether they can stream their music over Bluetooth than how fast they get from zero to 60.”

Ford executive Sheryl Connelly has been quoted as saying, “cars must fit into the lifestyles of young people and not vice versa. That means an increased emphasis on quality, versatility, durability and technology. …They want to be behind the wheel of their iPhone as opposed to the wheel of an automobile.”

From a safety perspective, of course, this phone culture only compounds the challenge. Many studies have shown that ‘connectivity’ features, regardless of how they are configured or accessed, distract drivers from what should be their main and only focus—watching the road.

Distracted driving is now estimated to equal drunk driving as a major cause of fatal crashes. In overcoming millennials indifference to cars as status symbols, heightened regard to cost, embrace of multi-modal transportation especially in urban environments, and dislike for the automobile’s perceived environmental impact, advertisers are now focusing on the benefits of in-car connectivity – a delicate matter when who all know that the driver’s full attention should be on the road.

here’s a price to pay for Metro Vancouver diverting its food and garden waste away from the landfill.

About four years ago, in a bid to cut down on methane gas emissions, cities across Metro Vancouver agreed to begin banning food and garden waste from ending up in the landfill.

The question is, at what point does it become too expensive for the company charged with recycling the organics from our green bins to operate without overtly impacting the lives of Richmond residents?

At the moment, all parties concerned — composting firm Harvest Power, Metro Vancouver and local residents — agree that it’s the people who are footing the bill for the pungent odours emanating from the east Richmond plant, which has the contract to accept and process the majority of the region’s organic waste.

A higher than anticipated volume of organic waste, growing complaints over the years and the pending renewal of a Metro Vancouver air contaminant permit paved the way to a town hall meeting last week involving the stakeholders, including around 40-50 concerned Richmond residents.

Harvest admitted at the meeting in a Richmond hotel that it had “dropped the ball” in terms of managing the odour output, but said it had made a number of recent modifications to its operations, near No. 7 and Blundell roads, and hoped it would have an effect in the next month or two.

“It was very much an information exchange…but it doesn’t solve the problems,” said Robb.

“Harvest said they have made some changes and modified some processes. But they did say it would take a while for the changes to take effect, however. It could take many weeks before it’s noticed.”

Robb said Metro is still working through the air contaminant permit process with Harvest Power and that it’s allowing the company time to respond, in terms of how it’s going to address the public’s concerns.

“Only then will we consider issuing a permit that takes everything into consideration,” he added.

“We are still taking in people’s concerns and will do up to 30 days after the public meeting (which was March 3). But we will also consider comments made right up to the day we issue the permit.

“The company may also have their own concerns about the permit we intend to issue; it’s all about negotiations.”

It’s very rare, said Robb, that Metro doesn’t issue a permit.

Harvest told the News this week that, in terms of “dropping the ball,” the management of the odour from its facility “requires a constant focus and attention on operations and the people that do the work...if that isn’t going on, then odour problems can arise.”

ichmond politicians want to know how a tunnel under the Fraser River that was deemed “good for 50 years” is to be filled in and replaced with a 10-lane bridge.

Coun. Harold Steves said council has sent a letter to the provincial government seeking all documentation around its September 2013 decision to remove the George Massey Tunnel and replace it with a $3.5-billion toll bridge.

The request comes after Freedom of Information documents showed Port Metro Vancouver (PMV) and the Fraser Surrey Docks company lobbied hard in favour of scrapping the tunnel, a move that would allow larger ships to ply the south arm of the Fraser River.

“This bridge decision caught us totally unawares,” said Steves. “We had a lot of meetings with (former) Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon in 2006 when he told us the tunnel was good for 50 years.”

Steves said FOI documents show messages from PMV and Fraser Surrey Docks to government planners in 2012-13, at a time when the bridge-versus-tunnel debate was taking place in Christy Clark’s government.

A memo from the port in March 2013 — six months before Clark’s announcement — showed the port’s preferred option and noted officials’ sensitivity to premature disclosure of their choice: “Option No. 2: Replacing the tunnel with a new bridge in the same location.

Not publicly confirmed yet, but this is (Port Metro’s) preference.”

A month later, port president Robin Silvester wrote “established terminals upriver of the tunnel (like the Fraser Surrey Docks) are at risk of becoming obsolete.” His letter was addressed to Geoff Freer, provincial director for the tunnel replacement project.

“This project can expand trade opportunities. The single biggest challenge is the tunnel,” Silvester said.

Asked for comment, Freer said the letter “didn’t influence the province’s decision at all,” other than showing that the river was important to the economy.

He said the choice was about the best way

to help thousands of commuters stuck in traffic each day.

“It’s about being there and seeing the need to do something,” he said.

But Doug Massey, son of the former Delta MLA for whom the tunnel is named, is skeptical of officialdom’s explanations.

Massey noted that Falcon said 10 years ago the existing tunnel would be retained and eventually twinned with a second tunnel.

A total of $22 million was spent on seismic improvements in 2004.

Freer said the tunnel has “come to the end of its useful life” and “no longer meets today’s highway and seismic standards.”

Massey doesn’t understand how the province’s assessments could be so wildly different in the span of 10 years.

“Didn’t Falcon know what he was talking about? It’s crazy to remove a good, useful crossing,” he said.

Freer said the federal government has been asked to contribute to the bridge’s construction costs, but no amount has been determined. He said the 110,000-tonne tunnel structure will be removed in a way that protects important salmon populations. Removal costs and who will pay them have not been determined, said Freer.

FOI documents also show dredging specialist Dave Hart and the port’s development strategies manager Jennifer Natland stating new container terminals could be built on port land in Richmond at the foot of No. 7 and No. 8 roads.

Hart said the channel could be deepened from 11.5 metres to as much as 18.5 metres so even bigger ships could be accommodated up to “100 years” from now.

Asked for comment on the port’s role, Tom Corsie, vice-president of real estate, categorized staff’s missives as making “statements of fact” rather than lobbying.

Corsie said it is easy to overrate the tunnel’s importance, but it is only one of several obstacles in the way of deep-bottomed ships.

For example, dredging operations would be required at a cost of more than $100 million.

Other obstacles include underwater pipes for sanitary sewers, water mains, telephone lines and natural gas; and the width of the channel.

international understandings and relationships.”

Hudson said too many international students could dampen the international experience for the students and thus the marketability.

His report indicates the district is being proactive in promoting the program’s growth. For instance, the district is looking to enhance professional services offerings, and to provide additional supports for students, school and families.

The district is also marketing the program, with recent administrative staff trips to Brazil, Germany, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Spain to “create and deepen” relationships with respective government organizations and agencies.

Hudson specifically reported on the growth of the district’s offshore school in Shenzhen, China, noting 233 students and adults visited Richmond from the school, this year.

Chinese students account for about 80 per cent of the district’s international students, who come from 21 different countries.

Next year, the district will charge slightly

higher base tuition fees — soon to be set at $14,000 per year. The rate hike is expected to bring in an additional $1.3 million, should enrolment remain the same. The tuition hikes are said to be in response to other districts in the region doing the same, noted Hudson.

The program is responsible for 89 full-time employees, including 55 teachers in the district and 19 teachers working in Shenzhen.

The recent growth has resulted in a new management position to provide translation support and oversight of a community outreach program.

The report was sent to the board as an annual update, but also to make it a “program of choice,” which means the district will have more flexibility in choosing students and setting expectations for them.

Trustee Donna Sargent said “we are proud of our international student program.”

The program’s growth corresponds with a push by the provincial government to increase international students by 50 per cent, from 2012 to 2016, at all levels of public and private education.

The edible agony of choice

Although the city is now overflowing with restaurants, it wasn’t always this way Lauren Kramer Contributor

T

he biggest quandary when it comes to dining out in Richmond today is choosing where to go.

The city’s restaurant industry has exploded over the last two decades and in the commercial hubs, it seems you can’t take two steps without finding yourself outside the door of a food-serving establishment.

But it wasn’t always that way. Richmond resident Jackie Brown has lived in the city since 1952 and recalls a childhood where eating out was not part of the lexicon and restaurant choices were few and far between.

“I think people were a lot more frugal in those days and we mostly ate at home or at the homes of relatives,” she said.

“Growing up with Depression-era parents, most families had only one income earner and we watched every penny. I don’t remember going to restaurants until I was in my early teens.”

By 1965, Brown was meeting friends at the

Brighouse Café, a modest Chinese restaurant on No. 3 Road, where a $3 serving of chicken chow mein could fill two teenage bellies.

Richmond’s first A&W opened in 1962, a drive-in diner where waitresses on rollerskates delivered food trays to patrons’ vehicles.

“For us, that was pretty exciting,” recalled Eunice Robinson, who lived in Richmond until 1969. Among her favourite eateries in the 1960s was Chipper’s Restaurant on No. 3 Road, a basic burger joint where she would meet her friends for burgers and fries.

“But we’d only go on weekends and certainly not every weekend, because the burgers were expensive for us. We had no jobs and babysitting paid just 50 cents an hour, so eating out was a real treat.”

The opening of the Oak Street Bridge in 1957 and the Massey Tunnel in 1959 led to huge population growth in Richmond.

In 1956, there were close to 26,000 residents, a number that grew to 50,000 by 1966 and increased to 80,000 10 years later.

McDonald’s opened its first Canadian res-

taurant in Richmond in 1967 and Robinson remembers it causing a stir in the community.

“Everyone had heard of Ronald McDonald,” she said. “The burgers were 39 cents and you could get a burger, fries and a Coke for a dollar, something we considered a real deal!”

Richmond’s first major subdivisions came into being in the decade that followed and Jon Henderson, a local teacher back then, was one of the first to move into the Rideau subdivision in 1976.

“I don’t know that there were a lot of restaurants in Richmond at that time — enough to suit our needs, but nothing like there is today,” he mused.

“We’d frequent Bella’s Pizza at the St. Albans-Granville strip mall and Crono’s Pizza on Minoru Boulevard. We’d also go to Dave’s Fish & Chips and the Charthouse Restaurant in Steveston.”

Dave Scott opened Dave’s Fish & Chips, a longtime local favourite, in 1978 on Chatham Street as a small take-out restaurant.

It moved to Moncton Street six years later and became a 58-seat dine-in eatery with a

take-out option. Dave’s is among Steveston’s longest standing restaurants.

As more women entered the workforce in the 1970s and 80s, eating out became a more acceptable means of feeding a busy family with two incomes.

Brown said her propensity to dine out changed considerably in those years after she married and started a family.

“With my husband and I both working full time, there were nights when it was easier to pop out and grab a bite to eat, particularly if our kids had sports or activities,” she said.

Kajak’s steaks and pastas, as well as its dance floor in north Richmond, made it an appealing venue when Brown and her spouse headed out on a date night, while the Sirloiner on No. 3 and Cambie served a good buffet.

Robinson also began eating out more, tempted by the increase in the number of restaurants, coupled with her entry into the workforce and a disposable income. By 1974, when her parents moved from Sea Island, they would get together at Banners Restaurant at Broadmoor to host clan gatherings.

athan Fong, a Vancouver food stylist and writer, says Richmond was better known for its “continental” restaurants 30 years ago, and for fish and chips in Steveston.

“Richmond wasn’t known for its Asian cuisine back then,” he said, recalling a review he wrote on the Chatham Street restaurant La Pergola, “forgotten now, but it was an amazing Italian restaurant owned

by two Italian brothers.”

Things changed in the 1970s, when the uncertainty of the upcoming turnover in China brought many Hong Kong immigrants to the Lower Mainland, and with them, high-end restaurants, noodle shops and BBQ shops.

Richmond’s population grew by 28,000 between ’76 and ’86 and by a whopping 46,000 between ’86 and ’96.

Fong said he’s seen the city’s restaurant scene change most dramatically in the past decade,

with the influx of mainly Mandarinspeaking Mainland Chinese and Taiwanese immigrants.

“Many northern style, Beijing, Shanghainese and Taiwanese restaurants have opened,” he said.

Numbers from the City of Richmond’s business licence base evidence this growth.

Neonila Lilova, the city’s economic development manager, notes that there were 711 food service restaurants in February 2016 — excluding bars.

In 2009, there were 372 restaurants in that category, a 91 per cent growth in the past six years.

To some extent, the restaurant growth can be attributed to the dining out proclivities of Asian immigrants, which differ markedly from those of Caucasians.

“Chinese will dine out more regularly as an everyday routine,” Fong said.

“For example, you’ll find Asian families having dim sum, dinners or a quick noodle nosh at a BBQ noodle shop. By contrast, I think dining out for Caucasians or Westerners is more social and specialevent driven — to commemorate anniversaries, dates or birthdays.”

Stephanie Yuen, a Vancouver food journalist, agreed.

“Asians, especially Chinese, enjoy eating out for no special reasons or occasions,” she said.

“We are prone to inviting friends and relatives to dinner in a restaurant rather than at home and choose to conduct social gatherings during meal times in restaurants.”

Referring to the massive growth in Richmond’s restaurant numbers, Yuen said that restaurants have been among “the top choices for immigrant business entrepreneurs, including those who had no prior (food and beverage) and hospitality experience.

“The erection of Asian shopping centres and strip malls has created opportunities for those who want to put a foot into the seemingly flourishing restaurant industry and as a consequence, we have more and more Asian restaurants bombarding the local market — Japanese, Vietnamese, tea shops and cafes, Shanghainese, Szechuanese and specialty eateries,” she said.

Can Richmond continue to accommodate such rapid growth in its restaurants? Only time will tell.

ox-batter waffles cooked in a budget iron might have seemed good. Then along comes Philippe Leroux and his authentic Belgian Liège waffles to upset the Aunt Jemima establishment.

It’s a weekday afternoon in Steveston, on the eve of International Waffle Day on March 25 (yes, there is such a thing), and Leroux slides one of his creations across a small table inside Damien’s Belgian Waffles, a business the pastry chef has owned since 2007. He sweetens the pot with a French press coffee.

If this grid-patterned pastry was an art, Leroux would be some kind of Cézanne.

“What we do is more traditional — the old style waffle from a long time ago. No eggs inside,” says the 46-year-old, a history lesson at the ready.

“They have no eggs because great grandma didn’t have a fridge. They’d buy the waffles, put them in a metal box and (store it) in the cellar. You can keep them for a week or more.”

Leroux bought the Chatham Road business from an entrepreneur who named it after his son. Leroux has been carrying on the tradition of selling waffles made with dough—not pancake batter— using real butter, honey and Belgian pearl sugar. He’s also upped the griddle game by filling his glass counter with flavours well beyond vanilla.

Leroux was born in Lille, a city in France near the Belgian border. Being so close to the country known for waffles, they’re easy to find here — not so much in other areas of France, where pastries such as croissants and brioche rule. Whatever pastry chefs were making, a young Leroux couldn’t help but stop and look.

“I don’t know if you’ve ever been to France, but if you look at certain pastry shops, it’s crazy; it’s very nice what they do. And I thought, ‘How do they do that?’”

So, after high school, he studied the art, completing a three-year apprenticeship. He became a travelling pastry chef, working in France, elsewhere in Europe and, in 1994, Canada.

“I moved to Canada to learn English and stay a few years,” he says.

He found work in pastry shops, restaurants and hotels around the country, including resort towns of Banff — where he met his wife Miho — and Whistler. In Vancouver he worked at the longstanding French restaurant Le Crocodile and also taught at Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts, where on his first day he challenged students to make a hot soufflé for the school’s restaurant. But it was becoming clear to Leroux that he wanted his own business.

He learned about Damien’s in Steveston. It was up for sale after a year in operation, as the original owner was returning to Europe. Leroux bought it, added his own touches and expanded

the waffle offerings to walk-in and wholesale customers — from vanilla and chocolate to green tea and savoury.

Running the business with his wife, and balancing family life with two school-aged kids, is busy. Leroux works a minimum of 55 hours each week, or more than 70 hours a week during busy times such as Chinese New Year.

And this being Steveston, he can’t take weekends off.

“Steveston is busy Saturday, and Sunday. It’s hard to take a day off,” he said.

“I’m off mostly Mondays and it’s hard to plan something too long because I have to pick up kids from school.”

Still, Leroux might manage a workout and meet friends on a day off — or, if the stars align, go skiing. When dining out, he skips the chains and looks for small corner restaurants — ones that value quality and ingredients like he does.

“I’ve been raised like that,” he said.

“It’s like if you make cookies at home.

If you (use) butter, whatever you do —, except if you burn them — you’re good.

But if you use margarine or crappy ingredients, you will have crappy food.”

For those who are wary of butter, Leroux has an easy counter-argument: his grandmother and great-grandmother were raised on it and both lived until age 99.

“I’m not going to do 99...but you can eat,” says Leroux, who eats two to three waffles each week. “Moderation, that’s it.”

Former Canucks facing off against cancer R

ichmond will play host to Vancouver Canucks Alumni and hockey teams from across Metro Vancouver for the second annual Face Off Against Cancer tournament.

Former Canucks Kirk McLean and Jyrki Lumme will be among the players lacing up next week at the Richmond Ice Centre at Riverport for the charity tournament, which raises money for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Camp Goodtimes program, enabling children with cancer and their families to forget about cancer for a while and experience camp.

For teams like 37 Strong, however, the March 20 tournament is more than just another fundraisier — it’s an opportunity to unite and remember a teammate and friend who sadly lost his own life to cancer last year.

Before he died, City of Vancouver parks and recreation employee Trevor Desjardins encouraged people to get active and shared his love of hockey by organizing a local team.

“Here’s a guy who lived a healthy lifestyle, didn’t drink or smoke and got cancer,” said Jayson Heaney, 37 Strong’s team captain.

“Hockey connects people and Trevor was

the heart and soul of our team. This is our second time participating…and first time playing in the tournament without Trevor.

“It’s going to be very emotional for all of us, but important that we be there for his memory and to support a cause that is working to stop cancer and to help kids attend Camp Goodtimes.”

As well as raising funds for the program, Face Off Against Cancer is an opportunity to remember those lost to cancer or currently fighting the disease.

Lead sponsor is the Vancouver Canucks Alumni, with McLean and Lumme lending their skating and coaching skills to the event.

“Face Off Against Cancer is a one-of-akind event in Metro Vancouver, where teams have a premier hockey experience, all while helping an important charity like the Canadian Cancer Society,” said McLean.

“Very few people haven’t been touched by cancer — myself included. This is my second year supporting the event and it’s both incredibly fun and incredibly meaningful for everyone involved.”

W

hat’s rarer in today’s super-heated real estate market than an affordable, traditional style, detached family home?

How about a defined space for the public to gather?

That’s what is driving Vancouver-based architectural firm Public, and one of its principals, Brian Wakelin, into stimulating discussion on trying to find and develop small areas for that purpose. He will be featured in the next Lulu Series: Art in the City presentation on March 24 at Richmond City Hall.

In a region where open space is a precious commodity, why is it important to include public spaces?

Wakelin said venues where the population can participate in shared experiences help create a sense of community.

But with current stratospheric prices for real estate in the region, is there enough motivation to have those public spaces materialize, especially when they would be built mostly with public funds?

“Yes, we have to,” Wakelin said. “Those spaces are vitally important. Civic life unfolds, and it doesn’t do that in a private apartment or home. It happens in places where there’s a collective and shared experience.

“I’m optimistic that it will happen.”

As scarcity for real estate increases, the need for public spaces will intensify and become more important, Wakelin added. And that will create the need for some unique solutions, because in many areas of the Lower Mainland, it has not been adequately provided for based on future population growth.

Many of the bigger cities around the globe that have been deemed “world class” have planned for that and take great pride in their public places for residents and visitors to

assemble.

“When you look at the great cities in the world, the public spaces haven’t happened by accident,” Wakelin said. “They have been very internationally designed, created and constructed. Rome, Paris, London, Hong Kong, Tokyo — the spaces where people collect and the images we have when we think of those places haven’t been carefully considered.

“Those cities have evolved over hundreds and in some case thousands of years, and the spaces where people get together are central to what it means to be there,” Wakelin said. “I hope Greater Vancouver will have those kinds of spaces in the future because it certainly does not have them now.”

So, which cities are paying attention to providing public spaces?

Wakelin said Vancouver’s original city plan does a decent job of setting aside tracts of open space. And Surrey is on the list for its efforts to try and match its fast-growing population.

“And I know Richmond is, as well,” Wakelin said. “But I think the places we build and envision for the future have to be thought out more holistically than just park space for passive recreation. They have to be thought out as public spaces for people of all shapes, sizes and abilities.”

One aspect most public spaces share is the ability to attract people. And that is a crucial point, because in many cases if you simply build a public gathering space, people will not automatically come.

“In many cases, successful public spaces are actively programmed,” Wakelin said.

“There’s the flower market in Camden Town (London), antique fairs in other parts of the city, and other activities in adjacent areas that help support them, such as cafes.

“You really have to work to make a public space, then work to actively animate them.”

months.

“They bring in sand, deck chairs and all kinds of activities for people who are unable to get out to summer vacation spots — it can be very hot in Paris. You can stay and enjoy life by the river,” Wakelin said. “They very consciously set out to make something happen.”

In Richmond, the public space outside city hall is a prime example.

“That’s one that I’ve talked about in the past because Richmond, particularly in that area, is fairly car-oriented,” Wakelin said. “But at least city hall has tried to create a framed, civic space for activities to happen. It’s a good start. But there needs to be a greater network of those spaces that are linked together, are swappable and accessible.

When you step out of Richmond City Hall’s kind of civic square, you’re kinda on your own.”

That’s one reason why, in today’s world, the shopping mall has often become the default town or city square where community

groups gather and celebrations take place.

“Malls have become the default, but I think it’s within our power to question the viability of how enjoyable those kinds of spaces are,” Wakelin said. “There are so many different ways we can do better and to be inclusive.

“The mall doors are a barrier for many people who live in our city — the marginalized who are prohibited from using those kinds of spaces.”

Wakelin’s presentation on March 24 is the first of three events in the Lulu Series: Art in the City program.

Sadness has a way of sidelining retirement's joys R

etirement is full of surprises. And not always the good ones.

Over the shiny newness of retirement, a pall of enormous sadness has fallen. On Feb. 24 my mother-in-law, Riva, passed away at the age of 93. Much as we might accept, intellectually, the reality of our elderly parents passing on, when it happens, the sky all but falls down.

Our world becomes smaller; the sun’s brightness dims.

And life is never quite the same. Parents are parents; no matter how old we get, we are still their children. And when they

words. Yet here we are, left to navigate the grief of Riva’s passing and feeling the inexorable sadness that accompanies it.

All of a sudden, my carefree retirement is anything but carefree. There was a funeral to plan over the course of one and a half days; arrangements to make; flights to book. And a 96-year-old father-in-law to comfort and coddle. After 76 years of marriage, his life, shattered.

Tempered by the reality of two remaining nonagenarian parents in precarious health, retirement is a mixture of exciting new experiences and harsh realities.

It reminds me that no matter how much planning people do, life takes whatever twists and turns it darn well wants.

The saying “Man plans and God laughs” has never felt so true.

So in the end, by necessity, we must learn again and again to roll with it; to flex our muscles, soften our hearts and accept what is.

Because when it comes right down to it the order of the day is serendipity: “luck that takes the form of finding valuable or pleasant things that are not looked for.”

Like it or not, the rest is life, flexing its muscles.

Entering the world of retirement not that long ago, I had no illusions that our collective parents would live forever.

My mother, at 92, recently had pneumonia and now there’s still a part of me that panics every time the phone rings.

last November the spots at Sunberry Fitness sold out in two days. A second session in January was at capacity almost as soon as it was announced. And hopes are the third session with the cotton tails on March 20 — two back-to-back classes — will be as popular.

All proceeds from the special yoga events are donated to Bandaids for Bunnies. When the March sessions are done, it’s estimated the bunny rescue will have received a total of $2,000, while Sunberry Fitness enjoyed a boatload of exposure.

In addition to that event, Zu and Lin bolstered their online presence in a measured way by offering discounted classes through the popular Groupon system. But rather than try and flood their small studio with new clients to the detriment of their regulars, they capped the offer when it approached the building’s capacity.

“We didn’t want to upset our current clients by having the studio crammed with people. And we didn’t want to treat our Groupon buyers like second class customers,” Lin said. “That’s why we limited the number.”

The strategies, to date, have helped keep the studio on target to reach enrolment capacity by sometime in 2017.

Before then, the online video will have kicked off to provide another revenue and exposure stream.

Zu said cost for the video classes has not been determined, and thoughts are initial access will be free with longer and more detailed videos requiring a subscription fee.

“There are some dance workout videos already out there, but they are not very good quality and run for about three minutes — about one song — and that`s not long enough, ” Lin said. “Ours will be longer and much better quality.”

s we age, so do our blood vessels. With advancing years, plaque accumulates within the arteries that supply the heart muscle (causing angina and heart attacks), our brains (causing dementia and strokes) and our extremities (causing peripheral vascular disease).

If we are lucky enough not to die from accidents, cancer or dementia by the time we are in our 80s, we are likely to die from a heart attack or stroke.

But some of us are at much higher risk for premature heart disease.

Most of the causes are modifiable — meaning we can reduce our risks through

to the eye; in particular, the Fiesta ST has a fantastic design that garners plenty of attention.

Regardless of the body style, the Fiesta is stylish and distinctive. Sharp lines are visible from all angles and its standout feature is the large grille. Note: the thick C-pillars do create a sizable blindspot.

Bright colours reflect the Fiesta’s fun-loving personality. New for 2016 is the SE Black Package that comes with unique 16-inch wheels, black trim and black mirror housings.

While the Fiesta is Ford’s entry-level model, that fact is not immediately apparent inside the cabin. Use of hard plastic is limited and the soft-touch dash is especially plush, making the car appear more upscale.

n Performance

The Ford Fiesta is available with three engines, each with a distinctly different character.

The majority of buyers will likely opt for the standard 1.6-litre 4-cylinder. This motor is available with either a 5-speed manual or a sixspeed automatic and offers a nice blend of power and efficiency.

Those looking for greater fuel economy can choose the optional 1.0-litre 3-cylinder. Using a turbocharger, it achieves better efficiency and slightly more horsepower and torque: 123 hp and 125 lb-ft versus 120 hp and 112 lb-ft on the standard engine.

This engine is only available with a five-speed manual.

The Fiesta ST boasts 60 per cent more horsepower than the base model, which is shocking in such a small vehicle with a reasonable price tag.

The turbocharged 1.6-litre inline-four produces 197 horsepower and 202 lb.-ft. of

torque. While those are not out-of-this-world numbers, the Fiesta’s light weight and the engine’s instant response feel bring a true fun driving experience. Its six-speed manual is quick and direct too.

Considering the price point, the standard Fiesta already has an excellent handling. But, the ST takes it to a whole new level.

Major upgrades to the suspension, brakes and steering mean that the Fiesta ST handles like a go-kart and torque Vectoring Control nearly eliminates understeer.

Overall, the Fiesta ST feels very balanced and neutral for a front-wheel drive car and has very little body roll.

Even in base trim, the Fiesta’s quick and direct steering means it’s willing to play, but the ride is comfortable and little engine and road noise enters the cabin so long trips are not tiresome.

n Environment

The interior design is as bold as the exterior. The sweeping dash is dominated by the central display screen and mobile phone-inspired button layout.

The base model does feel a bit spartan, but as you move up the range you are treated to leather seats, contrasting seat piping, ambient lighting and push-button start.

Five passenger seating is adequate in both sedan and hatchback models. However, it should come as no surprise that the rear seat is cramped in the subcompact Fiesta.

Entry into the back is easier with the hatchback because its openings are wider. Also, once inside, the sedan’s sloping roof slightly reduces headroom.

There are many useful storage spaces found throughout the cabin; front door pockets are a decent

size, the glovebox is large and there are various other handy cubbies for smaller items. The deep centre storage doubles as an armrest for the driver and front passenger.

The hatchback also has a much larger cargo capacity than the sedan version.

To start, the wider opening eases access to the 423-litres in the hatch, over the 362.5 litres in the sedan. To further extend its advantage, the rear seats can fold 60/40 to create 720 litres of maximum volume.

Regardless of the version of Fiesta you choose, it has an excellent driving position.

The seat and steering wheel have plenty of adjustment, plus forward visibility is great.

One interesting advanced feature is the MyKey system.

This allows owners to set parameters on top speed and audio volume - an excellent idea if the Fiesta will be used by novice drivers.

n Features

Starting prices for the Ford Fiesta range from $15,399 to $24,999.

Standard equipment includes cloth seats, air conditioning, manual windows, power door locks, and a AM/ FM stereo with CD/MP3 capability.

Additional features, available as options or on higher trims, include an alarm system, SiriusXM satellite radio, leather-trimmed and heated front seats, voice-activated SYNC 3, and a Sony audio system.

Fuel efficiency numbers (L/100km) for 1.6-litre models with the manual transmission are 8.5 city, 6.5 highway and 7.6 combined.

Automatic models return similar numbers with 8.7 city, 6.4 highway and 7.5 combined. 1.0-litre models see 7.5 city, 5.5 highway and 6.6 combined.

ain City FC highlighted Richmond Adult Soccer Association’s Soccer Sunday by capturing the Don Taylor League Cup. Making their first-ever appearance in the cup final, Rain City edged defending champions Richmond Athletics 1-0 at the Minoru Oval. The match was part of a RASA tripleheader that also included the league all-star game and the Masters Cup final.

Kevin Berna’s goal in the 14th minute stood as the winner as goalkeeper Christopher Hamilton earned the shutout with some solid defensive work in front of him. The result capped an excellent run in cup play that saw Rain City outscore their opponents 13-2 and produce three clean sheets in the process. Their first-ever win over Athletics also locked up a spot in the upcoming Keith Millar Provincial “C” Cup playdowns. They did it without their team MVP Trevor Koochin.

“This was a great way to finish the regular season. The team got stronger as the season went along and we are really excited to have qualified for the provincials,” said head coach Sean Handlin.

After finishing at the bottom of the old Premier Division last season, Rain City enjoyed solid league campaign with a 8-7-2 record to finish sixth in the First Division.

The Athletics entered the final after going

9-6-3 to finish fifth in the First Division.

The Don Taylor League Cup is the most prestigious trophy in the RASA — named after the league’s first-ever president who served on the executive for a remarkable 25 years. The tournament begins in mid-October and features teams from all three RASA Divisions — First, Second and Masters — in a random draw. It’s the league’s oldest trophy with the first competition commencing in 1962.

“The League Cup is always an exciting tournament for our association,” explained RASA president Steve Valenzuela. “Teams tend to bring an extra level of intensity to it.”

The Masters Cup final saw the Old Blacks continue their dominating season with a 5-1 victory over F.K. Nikola Tesla for their fifth straight triumph.

The Old Blacks went 16-1-1 in league play which included winning two of three meetings against Nikola Tesla which also enjoyed an impressive season with a 14-2-2 record.

The game was a rematch of last year’s final.

The all-star game featured top players from teams across the RASA. “It is a great way for our association to celebrate our players that help make our association a success,” added Valenzuela.

“It’s really exciting to see our top players compete. We try to provide our membership a fun, exciting environment to play and the all-star game is one of the events that helps us achieve that goal.”

Richmond rugby standout in action at BC Place this weekend I

t’s a rare opportunity to play on home turf this weekend for Canada Sevens rugby standout Nathan Hirayama.

The 27-year-old Richmond native will be front and centre in red and white colours for the HSBC Canada Sevens at B.C. Place Stadium — marking the first time the World Series has ever stopped in Vancouver. The hosts will have three 22-minute round-robin games on Saturday — Wales (12:04 p.m.), Australia (3:30 p.m.) and Russia (7:28 p.m.).

The playoffs commence Sunday morning, leading up to the Cup Final at 6 p.m. Sixteen countries are competing. The entire lower bowl is sold out with limited upper deck seating available.

Last weekend at the World Series stop in Las Vegas, Canada advanced to the Shield final before falling 24-12 to Samoa.

since making his series debut soon after graduating from McRoberts Secondary School when he was 18.

The fly-half has developed a reputation as one of top playmakers in the game. In 2012-13, he was third overall in World Series scoring with 241 points and topped all scorers at the 2013 Rugby World Sevens in Moscow.

After an injured plagued 2014-15 season limited his availability, he is back up to full speed and seeing double duty with the national 15s team as well.

His first taste of competitive rugby was in his Grade 8 year at McRoberts. He would go on to enjoy a standout career with the Strikers, playing for his father Gary Hirayama, a longtime teacher and coach at the school before recently retiring. Gary is a former Canadian international player himself.

Nathan also came through the junior ranks of the Richmond Rugby Club.

ichmond Wizards culminated their season in style by capturing their B.C. Coastal Girls Soccer U18 League Cup group with a resounding 3-0 victory over the Coquitlam Metro Ford Crush Feb. 28 at Hugh Boyd.

In a replay of the 2015 final, Hannah Coo and Kristen Sequeira gave the hosts a 2-0 halftime lead. Playing with the wind at their backs in the second half, in-form striker Amez Rasoul netted the third in the final 45 minutes to put the game out of reach.

After opening round-robin play with a 3-3 draw against Langley and eventually losing in penalty kicks, Richmond was flawless defensively the rest of the way. The girls did not allow a goal over their final six league cup matches, while scoring 13.

Born in Prince Rupert, George lived the past 30 years in Richmond. George’s careers included management in the fish industry, a businessman and a Realtor. He loved spending time with his family and friends, cruising the coast on Moonriver and playing cribbage with his sons.

George loved life and will be missed by all.

Vivian is survived by her sons Al and Doug Scrimgeour; daughter-in-law Ella; granddaughter Julia Vossen and her husband Everett Vossen; sisters Ruth Guday and Billie Shepherd both of Calgary, Alberta, along with many nieces and nephews.

Thank you to Dr. Jack Kliman for his care of Mom over the years. Vivian affected many people with her strong personality and she was tough-minded to the very end.

ROESLER, Lea 1934 - 2016 Lea Roesler passed away on February 27, 2016.

She was born in the Ukraine on July 20, 1934.

Lea came to Canada in the early 50’s and made her home in Steveston, Richmond, BC for more than 30 years. She recently moved to Courtenay, BC to be with her daughter. She lived a quiet life, and was well known for her knitting and crocheting, making many items for friends and fund raisers. She was a passionate puzzler and had a great love of animals, volunteering at the sick animals hospital, she was known and could often be seen feeding the birds and squirrels in the park near her home.

She is survived by brother Albert Schiller (Sebine), brother Edward Schiller, daughter Rose Johnston (Paul), son Denis Molcan, six grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Sheila passed away peacefully at Rosewood Manor in Richmond, BC. Born in Dagenham, Essex, England. She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years Edwin; children: Stephen (Loretta), Gregory (Maureen), Connie (Sean); grandchildren: Theresa (Wes), Rebecca, Kyle; sisters: Brenda, Kate and Tess. Sheila and Edwin immigrated to Calgary in 1957 and moved to Richmond in 1972.

Apart from her family, her interests included classical music, poetry, needlepoint, walks on the Richmond Dyke Trails and the British soap opera Coronation Street. Edwin and family would like to thank the staff at Rosewood Manor care home and Fraserview Lodge for their compassionate care of Sheila during her final years. A memorial for family and friends will be held in April.
