Why ‘women’s libbers’ march on EVEEDMONDS Editor

I

was 15 years old when I first publicly declared myself a feminist (although I might have used the term “women’s libber.”)

I was at camp, sporting a button that simply said “Woman’s Day.” It was 1975, and the UN had yet to declare March 8 the UN Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace.

(That happened in 1977.)

A camp counsellor had noted the button, so I offered my spiel about women’s rights, which was met with a chuckle and an arched eyebrow. But as we were just about to embark on a three-week canoe trip, he probably wasn’t opposed to a girl who thought she was as tough as a boy.

Forty one years on, and with International Women’s Day around the corner, would I still call myself a “women’s libber?”

Indeed, I would. The question, however, is what does that mean?

The Democratic leadership race in the United States has raised an interesting debate within feminism, as young Democratic women have gravitated to leadership hopeful (and old, white guy) Bernie Sanders, as opposed to Hillary Clinton.

The trend has evoked some testy words among women — all wearing the feminist badge. In a speech in support of Clinton, US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright told the crowd “there is a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other.”

Hollywood actress and Sanders supporter Susan Sarandon countered with “I don’t vote with my vagina.”

I admit, I’d like to see a woman as president of the U.S., not just because it would be inspiring to see the glass ceiling cracked open, but because, like any other group, women bring an element of their lived experiences to the job. Case in point, in our ode to International Women’s Day, (page 10) long-time Richmond East MLA Linda Reid recalls when she was first elected, in 1991, there were four men’s washrooms but not a single women’s on the Chamber floor of the Legislature. She also recounts the challenge of being in office and having a newborn. Today, there are not only women’s washrooms, many of them sport change tables. Thanks to the realities that Reid, and other women, brought to the Legislature, it’s now a more egalitarian place.

That said, I’d still agree with Sarandon — ideology trumps biology. Again, case in point, the NDP won that 1991 election, and it was specific policies they brought in that resulted in changes to a number of things, including washrooms. Women in leadership matters, but the factors that both enable and inhibit all women in their quest for a good life matter more. According to Stats Can, in 2011, the average earnings for women was 67 per cent of men’s. And so on we march, looking for fair wages, and washrooms, for all.

Open letter to Coun. Carol Day, Re: “Onni hopes fest will garner public support,“ Feb.17, News.

Thank you for providing me with your suggestions for what you would wish to see at the Onni waterfront ghost-town. Yes, Granville Island attracts many visitors, who come because they find what they are looking for, and local merchants have successfully stepped up to provide that. So has the White Rock waterfront.

Steveston has successfully attracted local merchants to provide a thriving commercial community that attracts visitors from near and far. The common theme is that the merchants provide what the visitors are looking for, and, if they don’t, visitors leave.

Why can you and your colleagues not trust this successful process to continue? Is it because you, as a politician, know better?

If you think I’m being cynical, it’s because of your ridiculous suggestion that this could

be a great location for a museum or similar.

Our Steveston waterfront has huge heritage buildings from the fish-packing era which remain unused and could be far better used for such a purpose. Whoever heard of putting a museum showcasing life on the river and telling the story of the Musqeam in a cold glass and concrete building?

Cold glass and concrete buildings are what we’ve got, like it or not. So let’s get on and use them. Let local merchants decide what will bring customers to the Steveston waterfront and create a vibrant successful visitor experience.

Let’s use the funds that city council will negotiate from Onni to help make this happen.

Carol, please step aside and let the existing and prospective Steveston merchants make it happen.

City creates doo doo dilemma Dear Editor, The new changes to the garbage pickup service is negatively affecting dog owners who, now, cannot place their dog’s droppings into the garbage bin.

Dog owners have been told to use a private service to remove their dog’s waste, but these services cost roughly $30 a month.

That is $360 a year. Where are dog owners supposed to find this extra cash? They don’t possess any magical powers which allow them to pluck money from the trees.

Dog owners already pay so much for food, vet bills, doggy day care centers, and dog licenses. Is the city trying to discourage people from owning dogs?

The new changes also see a drop in how often garbage gets picked up. Instead of

happening weekly, garbage pickup will now only occur twice a month. So, does this mean our annual rates for garbage collection will go down?

We are receiving less service, so why should we pay the same? I know that governments like to have it both ways, so I understand if the rates don’t change, but the previous guidelines under the old garbage service worked well for so long. Why did the city change what was not broken?

It’s less expensive to just make a Will!

The Wills Estates and Succession Act was put into force two years ago this month. Perhaps the major change it brings, in section 58, is the ability of the (Supreme) Court to rectify a Will made without following “protocol.”

A good example of this lies in the recent case of Re Smith Estate. The deceased made three testamentary documents (handwritten) without any help, between 2008 and 2011. In a 2011 meeting with a child and her common law spouse, the deceased asked them to witness one of the three documents, which they did. She had signed the other two. The deceased asked her granddaughter to be Executrix in late 2011. She agreed.

The deceased died in 2015. The granddaughter later found the three testamentary documents stapled together. She applied to the Court for various orders, including that the documents together were part of or were the deceased’s Will.

Under the new Act, the Court had to determine whether the documents represented the deceased’s testamentary intentions (even if they don’t comply with formalities). First, there was no question that the handwriting in the documents was the deceased’s. Second, the Court found that the documents were a fixed and final expression of the deceased’s intention. The documents were upheld.

This is a major change in the law and the decision in this case was in my opinion correct. I don’t know how much it cost to bring the application to Court, but I would guess that had the deceased simply made a Will with a Lawyer or Notary, the cost would have been less.

New hospital tower is long overdue Dear Editor, I had the honour of serving on the board of the Richmond Hospital Foundation for six years and I know we have some of the best medical professionals ready to help us welcome the newest members of our family, take care of our seniors, and provide life-saving care in our community whenever we may we need it.

However, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the hospital this year, it’s clear our local facilities are not up to the same standard as these professionals’

skills. The original tower is showing its age and I firmly believe we are now at a crossroads in Richmond.

With too few beds, and those we have often full, we’ve seen emergency department lines grow as patients have nowhere to go. We need more space to accommodate our rapidly growing population, our seniors’ population in particular.

In addition, as outlined in a 2005 seismic report — and reiterated in a 2011 report — a moderate earthquake will render the original tower useless. We

got very lucky on December 30th with an earthquake that was only 4.6 on the Richter scale — a few tenths higher and we could have experienced a disaster.

As government prioritizes infrastructure spending, I encourage them to partner with the Richmond Hospital Foundation to fund the construction of a new acute care tower that will ensure we have the facilities to serve the needs of our community now and in the future.

Boardwalk? What boardwalk? Obliging a single group takes us down a ‘scary path’ Dear Editor, It is time to set the record straight and for all parties concerned to stop misleading the public into believing that there is a boardwalk along the Fraser River fronting on the Imperial Landing development site.

There simply is no boardwalk and the developer has never built one. There is a massive, ugly slab of concrete that extends the full length of the development.

This slab was badly cracked during construction and was subsequently replaced — only to crack again. The slab is sitting/ floating on river bank material and is not an integral part of the site foundations.

The slab will continue to crack as there is nothing solid to support it. This reflects shoddy workmanship on what is advertised

as a very upmarket development.

To the east of Imperial Landing there is a true boardwalk all the way to the Chinese bunkhouse. Steveston, as a fishing village, had many boardwalks during its early days.

Boardwalks are famous all over the world.

They have historic meaning with romantic and nostalgic overtones. Sadly, the Imperial Landing development has ignored this.

Open letter to Richmond city council, I am a long-time resident of my beloved Richmond. I worked here, raised my family here, and have retired here.

Sorry to be so to the point, but how does one group of people get to say that it is incumbent upon city council to communicate in a language the growing Chinese community (can understand)? English and French are the two official languages of this country.

What about all the other immigrant groups that settled here before? My grandparents had to learn English; my mom had to learn. People coming from Eastern Europe, India, etc. all came here for a bet-

ter life and the Canadian way, a blended country.

We have started down a very scary path, first with the signage issue, housing and now language to suit one ethnic group?

I would appreciate your comments.

A

B.C. teacher who was found guilty of “egregious” professional misconduct will be stripped of his teaching credentials 40 years after first being accused of having sexual relations with three teenage students.

Robert John Robertson, now in his 60s, was a teacher at a Richmond high school in 1976 when he engaged in sexual activities with three girls who were 15 and 16 years old, according to a decision released this week by the B.C. Teacher Regulation Branch.

“His liaisons were not secret. He used his popularity and position to attract girls, going so far as to have sex with one in his school office,” the hearing panel wrote in its decision.

“His conduct was unethical and dishonest by any standard.”

Robertson had a relationship with one 15-year-old on a school-sponsored Mediterranean cruise. Their sexual activity was common knowledge among other students on the cruise, and their relationship continued after the trip.

“In fact, during this period in 1976 the evidence is that many teenage girls

actually vied for his attentions and that he relished that,” the decision says.

Other teachers knew or suspected what was going on between Robertson and teenage girls under his supervision, and at least one confronted him with no result.

The parents of one student approached police with their concerns but chose not to support criminal charges against the teacher.

Later in 1976, the Richmond School Board began an investigation of Robertson’s activities and suspended him, but he resigned his position and applied for a job in Vancouver. For some reason, nothing further happened with the school board investigation.

Then in 2005, one of his victims saw a newspaper photo of Robertson at a teachers’ strike rally.

“She had thought he had been disciplined by the Richmond School Board and that that period of her life was over and done with,” the panel wrote.

“She became distressed discovering that no disciplinary action had taken place at all.”

The woman approached the Vancouver School Board and a new investigation was launched in 2006. Robertson resigned from the school board and

court documents show he has been teaching at a high school in China.

In 2011, Robertson’s teaching certificate was suspended, but the disciplinary action was delayed, first by his refusal to consent to the process and then by a court application to stop proceedings. In 2014, the B.C. Court of Appeal agreed that the disciplinary hearing should continue.

Two of the students testified at the hearing and said their experiences with Robertson left a mark.

“They both made it clear that their memories of those days remain painful and their experiences at the hands of the Respondent did not serve them well as they matured,” the decision says, adding that Robertson has never shown remorse for his behaviour, referring to the liaisons as “indiscretions,” and has argued that his good teaching record should prove he has “atoned.”

It says Robertson avoided sanction by resigning his positions and then delaying the process for years.

The panel cited Robertson’s actions as one of the worst examples of professional misconduct and requested the government immediately cancel his teaching certificates and any letter of permission he may have to teach.

Lynch said he brought up shadow-flipping with his leadership team a few weeks ago and, from there, the company resolved to adopt a formal policy.

“The hope is that it compels others to follow suit; it’s not just for us, it’s for the industry,” added Lynch.

The Globe and Mail was the first to expose the practice that involves brokers reselling a property multiple times at increasingly higher prices before a deal closes. By doing so, they profit from each transfer using an “assignment clause” within sales contracts.

The original seller receives less than what the property ends up being worth and the last buyer may be paying an inflated price, with the difference in value going to the agent and the buyers in the middle.

Numerous homes in Richmond are being sold for hundreds of thousands more than what they sold for in less than 12 months, according to sales records.

The ministry told the News there would be no changes made to the language proficiency testing.

The changes would likely impact Richmond more than most other Canadian cities, as it is an ethnic Chinese enclave and has a high seniors population.

Richmond Centre MP Alice Wong said she disagreed with the move, calling it a ploy to garner votes from immigrants.

“To integrate into this community we need English,” said Wong.

“The point is to make sure (immigrants) integrate,” added Wong.

Wong said she has more concerns about other changes to the act.

Notably, McCallum is reversing the Conservative’s 2015 changes that made it possible to revoke citizenship from dual citizens who have committed terrorism.

Other changes include crediting a prospective citizen with time spent incountry prior to becoming a resident as part of the citizenship requirement, as well as shortening the number of years required to reside in Canada, to become a citizen, from four to three.

The Liberals are also granting authority to citizenship officers to seize documents provided during the administration of the act, if there are reasonable grounds to believe they are fraudulent, or are being used fraudulently.

ome of Richmond’s most notorious tenants could soon be on the move again, after repeatedly attracting unwanted attention from the City of Richmond and the Richmond RCMP. The tenants, understood to be sub-letting each time they move into an address, have been causing almost daily strife for neighbours in the Springfield Drive area of Steveston, just north of Steveston Highway and west of No. 1 Road.

In the seven months since moving into the single-family detached home, the tenants, believed to be three adults, have generated more than 30 calls to the RCMP and are on the city’s radar for unsightly premises and dangerous dog violations.

The Richmond News understands the trio had been sub-letting — from the same tenant, who is known to police — at an address in the Shellmont area last year, until frustrated neighbours forced them to take their troubles elsewhere.

A neighbour in the Springfield Drive neighbourhood contacted the News after hearing the tenants were in the process of being evicted again, last Friday.

“They left in a U-Haul along with their three pit-bulls; the cops watched them go,” said the woman, who asked not to be

“But I heard they were back on Sunday.”

The woman said, after posting about the tenants on Facebook last month, the Shellmont residents got in touch with her to help get them shifted again.

“Someone (known to the RCMP) is paying their rent and any fines they get from the city, so it’s difficult to evict them, I’m told,” she said.

there at all times of the day and night, and we’re finding used needles in the bushes and on the sidewalks.”

The woman said she’s been told that the owner of the property at 3140 Springfield Drive lives offshore and has been trying to evict the tenant and his sub-letters.

“The police and the city are not able to do too much it seems, but we have heard that a March 31 eviction notice has been served,” added the neighbour.

The homeowner, according to the City of Richmond, has the right to evict under the Residential Tenancy Act, if tenants are in breach of city bylaws.

“We can confirm we’ve been dealing with issues related to unsightly premises and dangerous dogs at this address,” said city spokesperson Ted Townsend via email.

“Our enforcement authority is written into our bylaws and varies depending on the issue.

“We usually seek to get compliance first and if that doesn’t work, we can move to fines or other enforcement tools provided through bylaws.”

Although it wasn’t prepared to provide specific information about an address or its inhabitants, the Richmond RCMP did confirm “abnormally high calls for service at an address in the Springfield Drive area.”

The RCMP’s crime analysts also have data to suggest that this address has generated more than 30 calls since September 2015.

“We encourage our officers to pro-actively patrol the area and support an open dialogue with the residents about community safety concerns,” said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

“We work with our partners at City of Richmond whenever possible, especially if infractions of municipal bylaws are encountered.”

The B.C. Liberal Party, led by Gordon Wilson, won 17 seats and became Official Opposition to a new NDP government led by Mike Harcourt. Reid was just one of three women in the Liberal caucus. In the house, just 19 of 75 MLAs were women, up from the previous 10.

Reid had her two children while serving as an MLA — no easy feat at the time. While pregnant, some suggested she’d have to resign and when daughter Olivia arrived, Reid learned there was no maternity leave, only a $300 fine for each day missed in the house.

“It was just bizarre,” she said. “I said to Gordon Campbell, who was then the leader of the Opposition, ‘If we ever get to government, that’s one of the first things we’re changing.’

I think he decided you shouldn’t argue with a postpartum woman.”

That penalty has since been removed, change tables and wheelchair ramps have been added, a calendar for the legislature has been introduced and programs to assist women are also now in place, making the legislature a “pretty awesome place in terms of supporting families,” said Reid.

“That was one of my goals. This place has

to speak to people,” she said. “The world has changed dramatically here and I’m intensely proud of that. We have the highest percentage of women elected anywhere in Canada, in British Columbia today. We’re sitting at 38 per cent.”

Reid is still aiming for gender parity — this year’s International Women’s Day theme.

She’s helping pave the way with her involvement in the Women’s Campaign School of the Canadian Women Voters Congress, which teaches would-be female politicians how to run an electoral campaign.

As an MLA for a quarter-century, Reid has plenty of experience to share. Her political career includes 10 years in opposition, eight in cabinet — as minister responsible for early childhood development and for child care — and the rest as deputy speaker or Speaker, her role since 2013.

Being the impartial referee in B.C.’s house of government is constraining and challenging, but sometimes offers a reward she describes as a “magical moment in time”— when all politicians in the house agree on an issue.

Said Reid: “I always said I’d stay as long as I loved the work. And I love the work.”

Dairy Queen moves to former weight loss site Graeme Wood

hen Dairy Queen’s manager Lynne Hallgren is asked what she’ll take home with her on her final day of work at her soft-serve ice cream wonderland, she says, “memories.”

And maybe a dipped cone; maybe.

“I’ve had a lot of ice cream over the years,” chuckled Hallgren, whose shop shut its doors permanently at the corner of Buswell and Anderson roads Monday evening.

Hallgren will move her team to the retail corner at No. 3 and Francis roads, where DQ will set up shop in what used to be the Jenny Craig offices by the end of May. “Ironic, isn’t it?” quipped Hallgren, who has worked at Dairy Queen for the past 37 years, becoming a staple to regular locals, who are disappointed they’re losing their place to score “hot eats and cool treats,” not to mention a cup of coffee.

“All my customers are so great. We’re like a little family. There’s Daniel the six-piece chicken strips guy and Murray, the litre-ofchocolate-ice-cream guy. There’s so many people who come in here who we consider our Dairy Queen family,” she said.

The Richmond News had, evidently, just missed Murray, a retired computer technician. “He comes here most days, everyone knows him; he knows us. It’s his social time.

He could stay here all day long.”

Hallgren said customers and job flexibility has kept her going all these years, not to mention watching her teenage trainees blossom into university students to eventually raise families of their own.

“We have always had groups of teenagers every year. From Richmond High we always had a certain group every year. So now they come back and they have kids. And people have gone into labour here and those kids have grown up and they’re having kids, so it’s great,” said Hallgren, who said she’s always proud to have “drama-free” staff.

“We’ve had a pretty good run,” she said.

Hallgren recalled all the changes around her. “When you’re here every day you go with the flow. Now its getting kind of crazy, everything’s going down . . . There was a lot of character,” she said.

Hallgren said she heard the Dairy Queen in Steveston will close its doors for redevelopment around June. She isn’t sure if the closures will overlap, but, if they do, Richmond may face a soft serve Blizzard and ice cream cake crisis, of sorts, with residents having to rely solely on the limited menu at the Richmond Centre Orange Julius/DQ stand.

The developer of Minato Village, at No. 1 Road and Steveston Highway, will reopen the Dairy Queen once the new buildings are developed by next year, leaving Hallgren as the go-to option for this summer.

ny number of possibilities can cause a ‘T-bone’ collision on a clear dry day in the mid-afternoon.

Usually the facts line up with the statistics: in 2015, the most recent US statistics indicate that drunk driving crashes still caused roughly one-third of all driving related fatalities, which also reflect, if not to the low side, the statistics in Canada.

On September 27, 2015, at an intersection north of Kleinburg, Ontario—about 15 minutes north of Toronto—when a 29-year-old grandson of a Canadian real estate billionaire blew through the stop sign smashing his Jeep SUV into the side of a Dodge Caravan entering the intersection carrying three children, ages two, five and nine, and their grandfather aged 65, his wife and a great-grandmother.

The driver of the Jeep reportedly had a blood alcohol level about three times the legal driving limit.

According to news reports, all of the occupants of the Dodge Caravan were killed except for the grandmother and the great-grandmother.

Regarding the children, media reports included this detail: “Harry (five) and Milly (two) died in hospital, Harry holding his sister’s hand, after doctors placed them together, knowing nothing could save them.”

Daniel, their older brother had died three hours before them.

The investigation revealed that the Jeep driver, having braked for almost four seconds, struck at 85 km/h—

The deceased children’s parents reportedly had left the courtroom as the Jeep driver took the stand, however, returning only when he was finished speaking. The mother reportedly said, “[He] killed all my babies…I knew I did not want to hear anything he had to say. …

Employed in the family business and soon to marry, the Jeep driver was returning from his own bachelor party in Miami where he had been drinking into the early morning and on the flight home in a private jet. Media reports note that character references portraying him as “down-to-earth, humble and caring” are nevertheless “at odds with his long record of driving offences, including speeding and texting while driving.”

Not surprisingly, this horrific tragedy has been widely reported outside Canada; expect the media attention to continue on the sentencing and whatever follows from this.

nne Hazon spent a lifetime caring for others. For 56 years she’s helped the sick, the injured, the women in labour and the newborns — including the now 15-month-old vying for her attention this morning.

Seated at a coffee shop table in Richmond Hospital’s lobby last week, Hazon, 73, was days away from getting time to care for herself; she’s now retired from a long nursing career, much of it spent here at Richmond Hospital in maternal and child care.

“The shifts are 12 hours, so I do find them a bit long now. I’ve just come to that stage in my career where it feels like the right thing to do,” she says, her granddaughter Aliyah Cohen — the last baby she’s delivered at Richmond Hospital — squirming in her lap.

“I’m looking forward to some time to myself and time with my granddaughters.”

Hazon’s current nursing assignment is in the six-bed neonatal intensive care unit at Richmond Hospital, a unit that provides care for premature and seriously ill newborns. It’s far from where her career began in the early1960s.

Born in England, Hazon wanted to be a nurse from the time she could speak. At age 17 she entered nursing even though mom, also a nurse, tried to steer her away from the profession. Hazon trained at Leicester Royal Infirmary, a large hospital that gave her fast

experience in gruelling work.

She loved it.

“Patients were in big long wards. There were no private rooms. You’d have a 36bed ward. I remember as a student nurse we’d have to go around and make sure all the wheels of the beds pointed the right way. Sometimes we had to scrape the dirt out of the wheels.”

She earned her nursing diploma in 1964 and longed for adventure. Hazon and a friend packed what they could onto scooters and rode through England and Scotland, working in nursing along the way. LUZERN, Switzerland — In 1949, when Angela Rosengart was just 17, her art-dealer father took her to meet Picasso.

“I was so intimidated by this famous man that I could hardly utter a word,” she says. “But it was a very nice meeting because Picasso looked at me and said, ‘Well, Rosengart, you have a lovely daughter.’”

Herr Rosengart had first met Picasso in 1914 and throughout his long career made regular visits to the artist’s studios in Paris and Cannes where he was allowed his own choice of works to sell. At the age of 16 Angela joined her father’s business and made her first independent purchase — a drawing by Paul Klee called Little X. “He always told me that the profession of art dealing makes sense only if you do it with your heart,” she recalls.

“You have to choose paintings as though they were for your own collection, even if you know that they are going to be sold.”

But that often made it difficult to part with the pieces. Nearly 70 years later she now has a staggering private collection that includes 175 works by Klee, as well as canvases by many other modern masters including Chagall, Miró, Braque, Modigliani, Matisse and Léger, and 35 works by Picasso himself.

These paintings eventually took up

every square inch of wall space in the family home. Eventually Ms. Rosengart, born in 1932 and still spry, set up a foundation and purchased a former bank building in the heart of Luzern.

There she put her dazzling collection on display in what is now the Museum Sammlung Rosengart.

She can be found there most days in person, but even when absent she is still permanently on display — Picasso made several portraits of her in different media.

“When I had to sit for him I really had to sit still and not talk, and suffer his eyes — these extraordinary eyes — with a look which was like X-rays. And that was quite hard for me, actually.”

She chuckles. “But of course, very exciting.”

She became as much of a friend of Picasso’s as her father was, and an increasing intimacy is suggested in the dedications Picasso added to these portraits. The formal “Pour Mademoiselle Angela Rosengart,” on a lithograph of 1953, becomes “pour Angela Rosengart” on a linocut a decade later, and simply “pour Angela” on an aquatint of 1966. In each he has emphasized her eyes, making them nearly as penetrating as his own.

These now sparkle fondly as she recalls her visits to the great man, as well as when she tells stories of how she and her father also knew Matisse, how Chagall gave them one of his palettes (also on display), and how they corresponded at length with Miró after discovering a painting he thought lost.

And downstairs, amongst dozens of other Klees now hanging in what were once the bank’s vaults, is Little X. Her very first acquisition also turned out to be the first that she loved too much to sell.

ith cameras flashing across their eyes and microphones being stuck under their noses, it’s a wonder the kids were at all able to focus on their mini works of art.

The group of 16 or so six to 12-year-olds — all from Syrian refugee families being temporarily housed in a Richmond hotel — were working on drawing with pastels and baby oil.

Drawing whatever their imagination could think of, the children, the majority of whom wore broad smiles, hurried around the room, excitedly showing off their creations.

All of this was much to the chagrin of the CBC cameraman trying to capture a still moment with some of the kids as they drew.

Accompanied by some of their parents, the kids’ “day out” at the Arts Connection in Steveston was proving to be a huge success.

“This, I think, is very therapeutic for them; it’s wonderful to see them smiling and enjoying themselves,” said Amal Ballu, an Immigration Services of BC (ISBC) resettlement assistant, who has been working with the families since they arrived in Canada in the middle of February.

Ballu said the families also have an ISBC life skills facilitator to help with transportation and taking them to the stores and such.

“There’s also a garden park near the hotel that they’ve been getting out and about to,” added Ballu.

“And a pop-up library also came to the hotel and many of them have been using their passes for the City Centre Community Centre for fitness and playgroups.”

While attending an advisory committee

meeting at Richmond City Hall in January, the Arts Connection’s founder and director, Linda Shirley, heard about the families staying at a local hotel and asked the city to put her in touch with ISBC so she could invite the kids to her school.

“I thought, ‘gosh, these kids must be absolutely bored out of their minds,’” said Shirley.

“We’ve had lots of experience with our Reach to Teach program and we thought this was a great opportunity to bring the kids down here for a couple of hours and get them engaging in something.”

Shirley then sent the proposal to ISBC, which thought it was a great idea.

“So, our bus went along to the hotel to pick them up and (ISBC) arranged a translator,” explained Shirley.

“We had 15 teenagers yesterday. They worked on a collage project; we gave them magazines and samples and they put together a collage.

“It was amazing to see how engaged they were, especially the boys; there were only two girls. The boys looked more like men, even though they were only 16 or 17.”

Not just wanting them to walk away with a painting on a paper, which might end up in the garbage, the teenagers and the younger kids all had their artwork framed.

“They were thrilled,” added Shirley. “Hopefully, they can hang them up in their new homes, when they finally get in there.”

Shirley said she’s already opened up discussions with ISBC to host another day out for the refugee children this month.

Ballu said many Syrian families that have been staying at the hotel since landing in Canada in January have since moved to the Fraser Valley to cities such as Abbotsford and Chilliwack.

Charmed by bitter man ARIANAGALEANO Book Club

I

’ve been reading way too many sad and woeful books lately, and I wanted to read something funny and light for a change. So I picked up A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman, mainly because the back cover promised a “funny, moving, heartwarming tale of love and community that will leave you with a spring in your step.” It was all that and much, much more.

Ove is a grumpy man of 59, which to me isn’t old, but he certainly read like a much older man. He is someone who believes that there is a right and a wrong way to do things, and he can’t understand why anyone would not take the time to do things right.

He never misses a chance to point this out to people. Forced into early retirement, Ove feels lost with having his days suddenly and unexpectedly empty from his work routine.

Ove is a man of routines: He wakes up at the same time every day, has the same breakfast, and goes through the same inspection tour around the neighbourhood.

Then one day everything changes.

During his routine inspection, Ove meets a cat with half a tail and only one ear.

They instantly dislike each other.

That same day, a family moves in next door and they manage to back up a trailer against Ove’s house. The cat and the family soon become constant features in Ove’s life much against his protests.

Everywhere he turns, there they are. They pop up in his lawn, his kitchen, and even his beloved blue Saab.

By all accounts, Ove shouldn’t be a likeable character. He is an inflexible, bitter and angry man who is skeptical about everything and everyone, but he is also hilarious, unexpectedly sweet, and extremely noble.

Behind his cranky exterior there is a story of love, sadness and loss. Backman slowly peels away the layers of what makes Ove who he is, in such a way that it is impossible not to be utterly charmed by this most uncharming character.

I closed A Man Called Ove with the profound sadness of a reader who knows there might never be another book quite as marvelous as this one.

I recommend this book to people who enjoyed A Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed out of His Window and Disappeared and The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. Ariana Galeano is a librarian with the Richmond Public Library.

Design Maritime Fest poster R

ichmond-based visual artists and graphic designers again have a chance to create this year’s signature artwork for the annual Richmond Maritime Festival.

The winning artwork will become the poster image for the 13th annual festival, one of Richmond’s most popular summertime festivals, which takes place at Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site on Aug. 6 and 7.

The poster image, to convey Steveston’s maritime heritage, will be seen throughout Metro Vancouver in print and online advertising, brochures, transit shelter advertising, site decor and other City of Richmond promotional materials over the summer. The selected artist will receive a $500 honorarium.

In April, the winning artist will be announced and the final artwork will be made public in early June.

Last year, local artist David Akselrod created a memorable artwork capturing the fun, maritime theme of the festival and the natural and historic beauty of its historic site.

udding artists can celebrate spring by sculpting cherry blossoms crafted from candy, fruit leather and icing to hang on a chocolate branch.

It’s one of a number of unique, hands-on activities planned by 2016 Branscombe House artist-in-residence Rhonda Weppler, as part of her year-long program of free artful fun.

On Sunday, March 13 and Sunday, April 10, from noon to 4 p.m., visitors are invited to Open Studio days to get a behind the scenes look at Weppler’s creative process while working on a public sculpture.

While there, they can celebrate the cherry tree, one of Richmond’s iconic harbingers of spring, by creating their own imaginative and edible cherry blossoms.

Before taking the sculpture home to eat, Weppler will photograph it and digitally combine it with other images to create a fantasy cherry tree forest mural to be installed for public viewing at a later date.

Mini docs bring Nikkei stories alive GRAEMEWOOD

A

new, interactive self-guided walking tour has hit the streets and walking trails of Steveston Village.

The recently unveiled Nikkei Stories, a historical documentary series of 10 three-minute films on Japanese-Canadian history in the village, is now available to the public, via mobile devices, at 10 specific historic sites.

The videos are the culmination of two years of fundraising and research by Orbit Films.

Writer and director Gord McLennan takes walkers on a history lesson through Steveston by allowing them to access the videos with the RichmondBC mobile app, or by scanning a digital (QR) code at a permanent red and black Nikkei Stories sign, located at each site.

“It’s like holding history in your hand. If you download the film at that sign, that’s the site where that history happened. It gives you a sense of place and a sense of immediacy,” said McLennan.

McLennan has established a walking tour map (see page 17) for anyone interested in watching the films on site (they can otherwise be seen at the Steveston Museum or online at NikkeiStories.com).

The tour begins on Moncton Street and wraps around the village, extending east to Britannia Heritage Shipyards. Notable stops include the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, Steveston Buddhist Church and the Steveston Martial Arts Centre.

The films combine for 30 minutes of viewing so the tour will take an estimated two hours, walking at a regular pace.

Taking one’s phone or tablet, each walker can use the

mobile app, with location settings turned on, to access the films, which pop up with a notification when the person is nearby the site (some signs may be difficult to spot so the app is the surest way to watch the videos).

Each film features a specific topic related to Japanese settlement in Steveston at the turn of the 20th Century.

There are several prevalent themes in the series of films.

For instance, McLennan shows how Japanese immigrants helped mold the local economy. In fact, nearly two-thirds of the fishing licenses were held by Japanese people by about 1920.

McLennan alludes several times to how the Japanese-Canadian community had to fight for equal rights. Several films recognize important individuals in this struggle against racism and injustices: Tomekichi Homma fought against racist pay structures for fishermen; Rintaro Hayashi went to Britain’s Privy Council to fight for the right to vote; and Hide Hyodo Shimizu, the first Japanese-Canadian school teacher, helped ethnic Japanese children assimilate into the public school system (Lord Byng elementary).

The contribution of women is also prevalent throughout many of the films, and one film is dedicated to the issue entirely. It shows how Japanese women were initially excluded from the workforce but eventually found their way into the canneries, laundromats and berry fields.

The women used their earnings to help build much-needed infrastructure in Steveston, another recurring theme in the films (because of exclusionary practices, Japanese-Canadians had to build their own school and hospital).

Many of the films also point to the struggles of internment during the Second World War, following the bombing of Pearl Harbour.

One film is dedicated to the internment process. It is aired outside the Interurban Tram because that very train helped move roughly 2,200 ethnic Japanese people out of the village, rendering it a de facto ghost town. In that time the white establishment sold off all of the Japaneseowned boats

“It was important for me to connect to my Japanese Canadian heritage. My grandparents are originally from British Columbia . . . They were relocated to Grand Forks. They lived and worked on a farm out there. It was interesting for me to learn more about my history,” said Yoshida.

Masuda expressed similar feelings, in making Nikkei Stories.

“These 10 stories from Steveston, in particular, taught me stuff I didn’t know, such as very specific details about people and events and history,” said the Edmontonborn and raised Masuda.

“I wish these stories were available when I did come to Vancouver because it’s a nicely packaged, succinct history of my own history,” said Masuda, who came to Vancouver in 2007, but recently moved to Vancouver Island, where his father’s family originally came from. ! Women were first shut out of high-paying cannery jobs because Chinese bosses excluded them. But eventually worker shortages during the First World War allowed them to obtain jobs. They used the money to build nurseries and schools.

Topic: Teacher Hide Hyodo Shimizu.

Narrator Naomi Horii talks about Hide Hyodo Shimizu, the first Japanese-Canadian to become a teacher. She taught at Lord Byng school. She also taught at a language school at what is now the corner of Chatham Street and No. 1 Road.

The video chronicles Shimizu’s teaching career, which took her to Toronto after being interned in New Denver.

6 Location: Steveston Buddhist Temple (4360 Garry Street). Topic: Creating Community.

Japanese immigrants contributed to the Steveston community in many ways. Narrator Daniel Iwama begins his story outside of the Maple Residences on Chatham Street at a replica façade of the Japanese Fisherman’s Hospital. Iwama notes how that hospital was a turning point for the Japanese as it somewhat proved to white people that they wanted to stay in Canada. Iwama also speaks to other infrastructure built in Steveston by the Japanese immigrants.

Several intriguing photos show Rintaro Hayashi and others winning many rights for Japanese-Canadians, however, everything changed when Pearl Harbour was attacked.

“The Canadian government treated them as enemy seamen and confiscated over 1,200 boats and sold them without their consent,” says narrator Steve Sakamoto.

The video shows how the “industrious, community minded” Hayashi left a legacy for Steveston.

When not working and raising families, Japanese immigrants did find time to have fun. Narrator Carly Yoshida explores how martial arts was a social outlet for the community. The kendo club was founded in 1914 and had membership of about 200 people before the Second World War. The video shows a number of pre-war action shots taken by professional photographers.

Narrator Colin Chan, who stands in front of the refurbished Kishi Boatworks shop at Britannia Shipyards, highlights the industrious nature of the Japanese in this video, particularly as it applies to the growth of the B.C. fishing fleet.

A darker side of the Interurban Tram is represented in this, the penultimate video.

“The tram played a major role in transporting Japanese-Canadians out of Steveston during internment,” notes narrator Sam Araki.

Japanese Candians were declared enemy aliens and 22,000

people were removed from the West Coast.

Araki notes Steveston became a practical ghost town when 2,600 people were taken to the Interior.

The tour concludes with narrator Donna Nakamoto in front of the Steveston Seafood House, which used to be next to the twostorey building that housed Hiro’s Grocery.

“It was a local landmark and gathering place for the Japanese,” says Nakamoto.

The video tells the tale of fisherman Buck Suzuki, one of the first to join the United Fisherman’s Union. The Japanese-Canadians returned to Steveston and continued to build on the village to what it is today.

– diversity was then considered a negative, evil quality. All that changed in the late 1700s, when diversity with regard to politics became a virtue of democratic nations. Our current use of diversity with specific reference to race and gender dates from the early 1990s.

Integrate and segregate sound like straightforward opposites but their etymologies reveal otherwise. Integrate, integral, integer, integrity and entire are all based on the Latin “integer,” meaning whole or untouched, formed from the negative “in,” not, and the root of “tangere,” touch (same source as tangible, tangent).

The significance of integrate, integration with particular reference to people can be traced to the first half of the 20th Century.

Segregate derives, instead, from the Latin “segregatus,” past participle of “segregare,” to separate from the herd, the prefix “se” meaning apart from, and “grege,” ablative of “grex,” herd of animals.

“Grex” also gave us congregate (from “congregare,” to herd together), aggregate (from “aggregare,” to bring together in a herd), gregarious (from the Latin “gregarius,” of the herd) and egregious (from the phrase “ex grege,” rising above the herd).

Diversity and tolerance are practically a Canadian motto — and yet we’re developing a rift in the population, due partly to a lack of communication.

If Canada won’t fix this problem for us, why don’t we fix it ourselves? A first step would be for everyone to learn to speak one of Canada’s official languages.

ome months ago, at a branch of the Vancouver Public Library, I couldn’t get the computer to accept my card. I went to the librarian for help.

She explained that they had recently installed a new interface with over 50 language options and consequently some things had changed. I asked why we needed 50 language options, English and French being the official languages of Canada.

She responded that it was to make immigrants feel more integrated in the community.

I couldn’t follow the logic of that argument.

Surely cocooning immigrants in their own (non-Canadian) language is more likely to segregate than integrate them, as far as the community as a whole is concerned?

For quite a while now, the favourite buzz words in town have been integration and diversity. We’re supposed to promote, foster and like the concepts — but so long as we don’t speak a common language (English or French) and share more values and priorities, it will be difficult to achieve such utopian goals.

Without compatibility, we’ll be no more integrated than a vinaigrette of oil and vinegar — in other words, a diversity that’s momentarily blended when shaken, but separated immediately afterwards.

Diversity and related words, divers, diverse and divert have had widely divergent meanings over the centuries.

Their root is in the Latin verb “divertere,” meaning to turn in different directions, and, like so many words based on Latin, they entered the English language via Old French.

In the 1200s, divers meant different in character or quality, a meaning that, in the 1700s, became associated with the word diverse. In the 1400s divers signified several, numerous, and various — a meaning still Limited Offer* current.

But by 1581 it had acquired the meaning perverse, adverse

Dunfee will take Richmond News readers along his journey to Rio; sharing thoughts on training, competing and what it’s like to be a top-level athlete.

fter four months in Australia, I’m back home in rainy and cold Richmond, and I could not be happier. My opening 20-km race of the season down in Adelaide last weekend went much better than I had expected.

The hot weather, which was forecasted to be 38 degrees and sunny, held off and we were left with low 20s to deal with, making for a fast race. After a slow opening couple of kilometres, the pace rapidly accelerated as we ticked off sub four-minute laps. By the 15-km mark, this pace had dwindled the group down to five, but I was just hanging on at this point. At 17-km, the other four made a break that I couldn’t respond to and while I maintained my pace over the final three kilometres, they accelerated rapidly.

best time ever, 1:20:34 and I can’t be upset with finishing 5th with three of the guys beating me ranked in the top-10 in the world and the other being my teammate.

The best part of this race was seeing many of the guys I’ve been training with for the past several months make huge breakthroughs to post Olympic qualifying times. It’s a huge testament to the amazing training environment we have, pushing each other every day to be better.

Being the first race of the year, I was definitely a little rusty tactically and that competitive spark wasn’t quite there as this race was meant to just be a fitness tester. Going into the next race, I definitely think I can improve on this time.

Speaking of next race, I won’t have to wait very long. I’m only home for two weeks before heading off to Japan to race. I am so excited for this race because of how fast it is. With tem-

peratures ideal for racing (about eight degrees) and a good course with strong competition (the world record was broken in this race last year) I think I have a good shot at bettering my personal best of 1:20:13, set two years ago.

My schedule is jam packed while I’m here though — a hard week of training coupled with physio, massage and doctor appointments, helping coach the Kajaks kids as they get ready for the season and giving a talk at a local elementary school!

I’ll also be attending the KidSport Richmond Gala on March 11 as a table host along with a number of top-class local athletes, as KidSport tries to raise money to help Richmond kids get involved in organized sport. Overall, I’m returning home in the best shape I’ve ever been in, a new 50-km national record, my second best 20-km and most importantly a ton of confidence heading into the rest of 2016. I started this training camp as someone who believed they could be a medal threat in Rio and I think I’m leaving as someone who other people believe could be.

T

he McNair Marlins are headed back to the B.C. AAA Basketball Championships for the third consecutive year when few thought they would even be a factor in the Richmond Senior Boys Basketball League.

“I know some people are already counting us out but I’m still expecting us to be one of the top seeds in the Richmond playoffs.”

Coach Jessy Dhillon’s somewhat bold prediction three months ago proved to be more than accurate for his upstart team.

Not only did the Marlins go on to finish with a solid 7-3 record, they were the surprise story at the Lower Mainland AAA Championships.

The 16-team tournament was expected to be an intense battle between six provincially ranked teams for just four B.C. berths.

Yet, by the end of do-or-die play last Thursday, it was the Marlins who had secured their spot at the Langley Events Centre with an impressive 82-75 victory over Vancouver League champion Windermere Warriors. That result came a day after McNair had defeated city rival and top 10 ranked McMath 76-57 for the first time in recent memory to end the Steveston school’s season.

They did it with a vastly different team than in previous years.

Ryan Angala is the lone senior who thrives as a leader and top scorer, earning First Team Lower Mainland All-Star honours in the process. Grade 10 point guard Nathan Schroeder plays beyond his years and will be a major force for the next two seasons, while a group of talented multi-sport Grade 11 athletes allow the Marlins to play an up-tempo pressure game.

Making this season’s run even more impressive was McNair deciding to stay at the AAA tier when the school’s current enrollment gave them the option play at the AA level.

“A lot of people were saying on the outside we should stick to ‘AA’ so we can go to provincials and have a chance at the championship,” said Dhillon. “We didn’t listen to anybody. We stuck it out and our goal was to go to provincials.

We started out slow but we are peaking right now.”

No kidding.

The Marlins served notice in the Mainland quarter-finals when they lost a 75-74 heartbreaker to No. 2 seed Byrne Creek. They battled their way back into contention with a pair of victories, including the big result against McMath. Yet, they only had a few hours to savour the victory before focusing on another do-or-die game against a Windermere team that was coming off a semi-final loss to Steveston-London.

Led by Schroeder and Angala, McNair jumped out to a 44-32 halftime lead. The Warriors opened the third quarter on a 10-2 run and the Marlins looked to be in trouble. That’s when Grade 11s Talvinder Jadge and Jovan Dhillon picked up the offensive slack with some clutch perimeter shooting.

Jadge hit back-to-back threes to push the lead back up to seven points, while Dhillon clutched up in the fourth quarter with a pair of treys and another key basket. Both play Metro soccer for Richmond United and are key components to McNair’s very effective pressure defence.

“These guys are soccer players and for a lot of them, this is their (other) sport,” added Jessy Dhillon. “I’ve never been a coach to drill there is only one sport and that’s it. I was a soccer first (athlete) too and soccer players can see the court a lot differently.

“We can run and we don’t have to worry about cardio at practices either like other teams have to.”

RASA Cup Final Sunday features tripleheader at Minoru Oval It’s League Cup final Sunday in the Richmond Adult Soccer Association (RASA) with a tripleheader slated for Minoru Park.

At 11 a.m., AC Richmond is taking on Rain City F.C. in the Don Taylor League Cup championship game. AC Richmond is coming off an outstanding unbeaten run in

regular season play that earned them top honours in the RASA First Division. The winner will also be assured a berth in the Keith Millar Provincial “B” Cup playodowns.

The action continues with the league allstar game at 1 p.m., featuring talent from all teams. The day will conclude with the

Masters Cup final at 3 p.m.

All matches take place on the Minoru Oval.

■ Seafair Destroyers Atom C4 hockey team captured the Pacific Coast Amateur President’s League banner thanks to a sparkling 13-2-3 run in regular season play. Sockeyes bow out to Steelers again For the second straight year, the Richmond Sockeyes have been bounced in the opening round of the Pacific Junior Hockey League playoffs by the Grandview Steelers.

The Sockeyes dropped three straight to conclude their season, including a 2-1 home ice game six loss last Thursday.

Following Grandview’s wild 8-5 game four victory to pull even at 2-2, the teams reverted back to tight checking hockey which had been the theme of the evenly matched season series.

The Steelers pulled out a 3-2 game five victory on home ice, to set-up the series clincher one night later.

Steelers’ goalie Cole MacInnes was terrific when the series was on the line, making 27 and 32 saves respectively in games five and six.

Icing…

The Sockeyes family is mourning the loss of alumni Tom Frame who passed away suddenly on Feb. 25 at the age of 58.

Frame was a standout goaltender for club between 1973-76, earning league all-star honours. The Richmond native also thrived at lacrosse. He was living in Vernon but made frequent trips back to his hometown to support the team, including as recent as three weeks ago.

She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years Edwin; children: Stephen (Loretta), Gregory (Maureen), Connie (Sean); grandchildren: Theresa (Wes), Rebecca, Kyle; sisters: Brenda, Kate and Tess. Sheila and Edwin immigrated to Calgary in 1957 and moved to Richmond in 1972.

Apart from her family, her interests included classical music, poetry, needlepoint, walks on the Richmond Dyke Trails and the British soap opera Coronation Street. Edwin and family would like to thank the staff at Rosewood Manor care home and Fraserview Lodge for their compassionate care of Sheila during her final years. A memorial for family and friends will be held in April.
