ook at that front page. What is it about 10-year-old boys that screams superhero?

Even without the cape, they seem so ready to take on the world. And taking on the world is what it’s all about for boys and girls in Mr. Victoria’s class. The Grade 4 teacher is one of those educators who is all about empowering, all about challenging ideas, all about thinking for oneself and taking initiative.

It was in that same spirit that he ditched his original lesson plan when he saw some of his students keenly interested in something else — and the Comic Con was born (page 21.)

Point being, his class is a real time example of what’s being called “inquiry-based” learning.” It’s the new focus of the curriculum, but to hear Mr. Victoria tell it, there’s really nothing new about it. The hallmark of any good teacher is being able to inspire and engage. The new curriculum, which still includes standardized testing, gives teachers more leeway to tailor lesson plans to harness students’ energy and imagination, while still achieving the desired learning outcomes.

Which brings me to the question, what are those desired outcomes?

Today’s feature also highlights the fact our board of education is launching a policy review. Among other things, it will revisit policies pertaining to commercialism within the school. Currently, the board’s policy basically states public schools should be supported with public funds; private companies and corporations have no business there, except for in very particular circumstances.

However, that policy is now being called “out dated.” It seems that as public funds have dwindled, (and the BC Liberal’s recent budget won’t help matters there) so may be the board’s resolve to keep young students insulated from corporate influence — after all, the odd Pepsi poster or Coke vending machine could probably buy a lot of books and fund a lot of field trips. The issue came up last year when Chevron offered to finance some school projects in the Lower Mainland in what they called a Fuel Your School promotion.

I’m sure the money was tempting, but would the major oil producer fund a project on electric cars? As they say, he who pays the piper calls the tune. Even if it did, the company’s primary goal is building its brand.

One of the key aims of education is fostering critical thinking. In a subtle yet profound way, critical thinking is at risk as corporate interests seep into the learning environment.

We need our superheroes, and if they are to take on the world they need to be treated, not as consumers, but as our hope for new ways of thinking and, perhaps, challenging those very consumer values to which many of us have become blind. Now, there’s a learning outcome worthy of a cape.

LETTERSto the Editor News coverage Mayor selective is pretty in pink on policing facts Dear Editor, I want to commend the Richmond News for its excellent coverage of Pink Shirt Day in its Feb. 24 issue.

From examining the long term effects of bullying, to exploring how the anti-bullying message has filtered more broadly into the community and into adult workplaces, to highlighting not only the way schools and students celebrate Pink Shirt Day but also strive to create cultures of kindness and acceptance year-round with mentoring and other initiatives, the News did a wonderful job of reminding us of two things: 1. Letting young people take the lead can be a powerful force for change; 2. Erasing bullying and building a society based on respect and compassion needs to be a community-wide effort.

I would also like to thank those who had the courage to share their stories and experience of being bullied or participating in bullying. When people speak up, those who have been victims of bullying can know they aren’t alone and hopefully it deters others from engaging in bullying behaviour.

Dear Editor, This is what Mayor Malcolm Brodie is not telling the residents of Richmond about a municipal police force: Staffing and training of new RCMP members is paid for by the federal government and when they arrive in Richmond they are boots on the ground ready to go.

Not all presently stationed RCMP members will convert to a municipal police so these positions will have to be advertised nationally, meaning more cost.

Municipal police staffing and training will be paid by Richmond taxpayers.

The concern about longevity of RCMP members stationed in Richmond has been raised.

Recent statistics supplied by the RCMP advise that 39 per cent have been stationed in Richmond under five years; 46 per cent have five to 10 years; 11 per cent are at 10-15 years and 4 per cent of members have 15-20 years.

Richmond will lose its 10 per cent policing discount from the federal government if they implement a municipal police.

Dear Editor, Re: “Higher land value should be part of deal,” News, Feb, 19.

I have no interest in marine businesses along the boardwalk in Steveston.

Obviously, neither do the marine businesses. I’d like to stop into a bank or grocery store or another coffee shop as I walk along the river.

Clearly, marine businesses can’t afford to be there, or there isn’t sufficient business to establish marine oriented business on Onni’s property. I think it’s the latter! Business doesn’t locate because of zoning, they go where they can be viable.

Allow them to put businesses into those spaces, currently used for resident storage lockers, that appeal to the public — not businesses that give Onni the best return, but those that attract and provide service to the many people that walk along the river.

Onni carnival a shabby ploy Dear Editor, Onni’s current publicity stunt is insulting to the residents of Steveston. Their development of the Imperial Landing site has been a very well orchestrated ploy ever since it was conceived. Thanks to the incompetence and compliance of city hall, Onni was issued an original development permit based on a maritime theme which was never intended to be carried out. Onni has very deep pockets and they settle disputes in the courts where they can run circles around city hall. Onni has no concept of community awareness or social values. The current attempt to win over the community by putting on a carnival is simply an attempt to buy support. How shabby can they get?

City hall, and its elected officials, are as much to blame as Onni for the four-year “Mexican standoff” that has no end in sight. It is obvious that city hall had no idea as to what

a maritime theme was all about at the time they issued the development permit. However, it has been mooted that a marina facility is needed. This should have been included in the Onni development permit.

There is room to build a fully serviced marina to accommodate 300-400 pleasure boats.

The cost of this facility would become the full responsibility of Onni and fits with their permit to develop according to a maritime theme.

The problem is that the Fraser River is rapidly becoming a major commercial transport route putting pleasure craft more and more at risk.

There is nothing attractive about the Imperial Landing site as it stands. There is no greenery and/or shade trees where people can sit and enjoy the river view.

Is city hall really prepared to stand up to this developer?

oun. Harold Steves says it’s time to consider densification of some neighbourhood subdivisions, but in the meantime, he’s supporting a proposed amendment to the City of Richmond’s housing policy that will usher in significant changes to residential development along main roads.

More than a year after city council asked city planners to review housing forms on large lots, a staff report released last week is recommending an array of changes that expand ground-level housing types along the city’s arterial roads, thus allowing thousands of more people to live outside of the downtown core than what was originally planned for in the Official Community Plan of 2011.

“It’s not just the arterial roads I’m concerned about. I’m concerned about why we aren’t densifying some of the subdivisions, as well. It’s something we really have to come to grips with,” said Steves.

The proposed amendments, now set for public consultation (open houses), include provisions for row housing, duplexes, triplexes and more compact lots, which would allow for close to a 50 per cent increase in units along such roads, accounting for 12,200 more residents.

The report notes planners have identified 1,626 properties that can eventually turn into 6,115 housing units.

In light of record-setting real estate prices, the city contends smaller dwellings will result in more affordable housing options. The proposals make no provisions for rental units.

While council asked for a review of all large lots in the city, the report states there are no proposed changes for internal subdivisions as “this will require considerable additional research to review this potential.”

Brighouse Village expands Graeme Wood

T

ime is quickly running out on the old Dairy Queen building on Buswell Road after a development permit to build a 15-storey tower was approved by city council on Monday.

The development concept, known as Alfa, was approved last year as the vicinity labelled Brighouse Village undergoes significant densification.

Four towers, including Alfa,

will be built a stone’s throw away from Richmond City Hall within the next year. Already under construction is the Storeys subsidized housing complex for low-income and/or vulnerable residents.

That tower will accommodate 129 housing units.

Along No. 3 Road will be an 11-storey office tower with ground level retail space and a nine-storey residential tower along Anderson Road.

Those towers are already being seismically prepared with pre-fill.

Alfa will boast 111

residential units when complete, eight of which will be one-bedroom subsidized rental units (monthly rents of $950, stipulated by a housing agreement via the city, for those with household incomes below $38,000).

The tower will be heated and cooled with a private geothermal system.

Restaurants and retail will be on the ground level.

Further up Buswell is another tower development under construction, Elle Richmond, which replaced the old Legend’s Pub.

s no-brainers go, the official title for an under-construction, public building in Terra Nova was right up there with how Steveston got its name.

And on Wednesday, as the cement was being delivered at The Sharing Farm’s new city-owned facility off Westminster Highway, James Gates smiled as he gazed across the safety fencing at workers laying the foundations of “Mary’s Barn.”

Mary’s Barn — named in honour of The Sharing Farm founder Mary Gazetas, who passed away in 2012 — is scheduled to be completed sometime in May. Gazetas was the inspiration behind and a founding member of the non-profit Richmond Fruit Tree Sharing Project, the original name of The Sharing Farm Society.

She recognized the need for healthy fresh food at the Richmond Food Bank and worked to secure a small plot of City of Richmond land in Terra Nova to grow vegetables for the bank.

“It’s very fitting,” said Gates, The Sharing Farm’s executive director, adding that it wasn’t straight forward getting the building named after Gazetas, given the city’s policy over the naming of facilities after people.

“It really couldn’t be any other name.”

Like any working farm, Mary’s Barn is key to the operations, with equipment storage, vegetable washing and packing,

cold storage and space to hang the farm’s signature crop — garlic.

“Mary’s Barn is a vital asset and building that will help us grow and deliver

more fresh, sustainably grown produce for low-income families in Richmond,” added Gates.

“The (farm) donates up to 70 per cent of all food grown to the Richmond Food Bank and community meals in the city.

“In 2015, over 14,000 pounds of food was donated to the local community.”

Mary’s Barn was only possible, said Gates, with the support of the City of Richmond. “(This) is a community barn, supported by several community-minded companies in Richmond including Rona, Kin’s Farm Market and Lafarge, as well as many contributions from friends of the farm from Richmond and Vancouver,” added Gates.

When the three and a half-acre Terra Nova Rural Park was created, Gazetas was invited to bring her team from the Richmond Fruit Tree Sharing Project to Terra Nova to establish The Sharing Farm.

As a result of her initiative and leadership, The Sharing Farm has donated thousands of pounds of fresh organic vegetables for low-income families in Richmond.

That vision has continued since her death four years ago.

Gazetas had believed that gardens are all about people and community building.

She had built a big community of people around her vision and inspired many to give back and volunteer for neighbours in need in Richmond.

s the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA’s) Fatal Analysis Reporting System (FARS) statistics for 2015 roll in, the year, as predicted, is counter-trending ‘not to the good’. Press release details say: “[In] 2014 … 32,675 people died in motor vehicle crashes, a 0.1-percent decrease from the previous year.

The fatality rate fell to a record-low of 1.07 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled. Estimates for the first half of 2015 show an 8.1 percent increase in traffic deaths from the same period last year. The fatality rate per vehicle mile reportedly is up 4.4 percent.

Not surprisingly, the news release in this regard cautions that while “partial-year estimates are more volatile and subject to revision”, this “represents a troubling departure from a general downward trend.”

The call is out to “the federal, state and local governments, law enforcement, vehicle manufacturers, safety advocates and road users” to “reinvigorate the fight against deadly behavior on America’s roads” which includes, of course, more effort to find out what is going on.

Final 2015 numbers and the identification of factors in the year’s fatalities will not be available until next year. In the meantime, the 2014 ‘picture’ shows “that while overall road deaths declined only slightly, it was the safest year on record for passenger vehicle occupants: 21,022 Americans died in vehicles in 2014, the lowest number since FARS began collecting data

in 1975.” Cyclist deaths also declined. The number of pedestrians killed, however, rose by 3.1 percent from 2013.

With respect to these overall 2014 results, the standard causal factors remained constant — drunk driving crashes caused roughly one-third of the fatalities; half of all vehicle occupants who died were not wearing seat belts; more (helmet-less) motorcyclists died in states without helmet laws; speeding was a factor in more than one in four deaths; distracted driving accounted for 10 percent of all crash fatalities; drowsy driving for 2.6 percent; and human factors vastly outweighed vehicle-related factors as ‘the critical cause’ of crashes in 94 percent and two percent respectively.

Early attempts to explain 2015 suggest US job growth combined with low fuel prices means more people driving overall, which has tended to contribute to higher fatality rates. Cell phone technology and interconnectivity is a main focus of concern. The US National Safety Council (NSC) estimates that one in four crashes involve cell phone use.

NSC CEO Deborah Hersman has been quoted as saying, “While the public understands the risks associated with distracted driving, the data shows the behavior continues – we need better education, laws and enforcement to make our roads safer for everyone.” She also points out that while automakers have developed heads-up displays that enable drivers to check information without taking their eyes from the road … “if it puts up an iPod playlist or sends a restaurant reservation that may distract from the task of driving.”

As voice command becomes the norm for control of communication devices we may expect to see a change in the distracted driving issue.

t’s official. Construction on a jet fuel terminal on the Fraser River’s south arm, as well as a pipeline crossing diagonally across Richmond to Vancouver International Airport, will begin as early as next week.

The permit marks the first of several proposed projects to get the final green light, resulting in Panamax sized tankers running up and down the Fraser for fossil fuel deliveries.

On Wednesday, Port Metro Vancouver (PMV) issued a project permit to the Vancouver Airport Fuel Facilities Corporation, a consortium of airlines, allowing it to build a loading dock and six storage tanks for the jet fuel.

The facility, near the Riverport entertainment complex, will also include a small operations building, a foam storage and incident command centre and spill containment infrastructure.

It is anticipated construction will take 18 to 24 months.

Each five-storey tank will store 13.3 million litres of fuel and there are provisions to add two more tanks at a later date.

The port was able to issue the permit following what it describes as a “harmonized federal-provincial environmental review” that was approved by the B.C. government in December, 2013.

the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Environment Canada and some nearby First Nations groups left out of the process.

PMV listed the permit status online Wednesday, although the link to the actual permit was broken.

The City of Richmond is attempting to review the permit.

“We’re looking to see what conditions they’ve put on the permit approval because we’ve made inputs” with regards to fire safety and environmental concerns about the unloading of the fuel, noted Richmond’s spokesperson Ted Townsend.

While the new Liberal government recently implemented interim measures for the environmental assessment process, existing projects, such as this one, will not be affected.

The new measures include looking at how projects contribute directly and indirectly to greenhouse gases and pollution.

Mayor Malcolm Brodie repeated his opposition to the facility two weeks ago in his annual address.

Police searched his apartment and found it had been ransacked, an event the judge concluded had been staged.

Stalker and Truong both testified, with Truong describing a man he’d met at a party in Richmond whom he identified as Brandon Connelly. He said he later met with Connelly and B.L. to discuss a plan to stage the fake robbery.

The judge said she found Truong, who had no prior criminal record, to be a credible witness.

Stalker, who has an extensive criminal record, testified to basically the same story as Truong.

“A so-called complainant, together with Brandon (Connelly), planned a theft and enlisted Mr. Stalker and Mr. Truong to help,” said the judge. “To paint a convincing picture of a robbery to trick B.L.’s boss, B.L. used

wo men have been sentenced in a bizarre kidnapping case that involved the attempted robbery of $300,000 cash from a Chinese government official.

It all began after the official, identified only as Mr. Chan, transferred his cash to a money exchange in Richmond.

His contact in Canada — a man who can be identified only by the initials B.L. due to a publication ban — was tasked with collecting the cash and holding it until the official could use it later to gamble.

But B.L. decided he wanted to steal the money and planned a fake kidnapping that was foiled when a bystander spotted suspicious activity in a Richmond parkade.

That’s the conclusion reached by a judge who this week sentenced two men, Donald Stalker and Raymond Truong, for their part in the August 2013 crime.

“To say the facts in this case are unusual is to understate,” B.C. Supreme Court Justice Catherine Wedge said while sentencing Stalker. “They border on the bizarre.”

Stalker, 29, and Truong, 21, went on trial charged with a number of offences including kidnapping, but a jury acquitted them of the most serious charges and

instead convicted them of theft.

Stalker was also convicted of possession of a loaded firearm.

B.L. testified that Mr. Chan periodically sent large amounts of money to Canada and then travelled here about three times a year to have B.L. deliver the money to him.

B.L. kept huge amounts of cash in his apartment in Richmond, even when he had his four-year-old son with him.

On the day of the alleged abduction, B.L. was en route to deliver the $300,000 to Mr. Chan. B.L. and his son were rushed by three or four men as they approached his BMW SUV parked in the Westin Wall Centre on Corvette Way. B.L. was handcuffed and put in the back seat of the vehicle with his son.

Stalker drove the vehicle out of the parkade, and then Truong got behind the wheel. A short while later, police stopped the vehicle.

A police officer testified that neither B.L. nor his son looked upset or in any distress. Inside the cargo area of the vehicle, police found the cash in a grocery bag.

They also found a semi-automatic pistol. The chamber was not loaded, but a magazine attached to it contained rounds of ammunition.

When police asked B.L. about the money, he became hostile and refused to talk until he had spoken to

Crime down after record year C

rime statistics are in for 2015, showing a 31 per cent reduction in residential break-ins from 2014. There were 677 break-ins in 2015, whereas 2014 had 981, which represented at least a five-year high.

Meanwhile, motor vehicle thefts jumped 10 per cent, from 347 in 2014, to 383 in 2015, according to a Richmond RCMP report to city council’s safety committee.

Although thefts from cars dropped five per cent, Coun. Ken Johnston warned of an uptick in a certain type of theft from cars. He said residents should be aware of growing incidents of thieves breaking into cars and stealing garage door openers. The thieves find the house by looking at insurance papers stowed in a compartment.

“So keep those clickers in your pocket,” said Johnston.

Police reported that overall property crime was down 2.6 per cent, with 8,206

incidents. Violent crime remained steady, with assaults up, but sexual offences and robberies down.

Supt. Renny Nesset said the committee can expect a full review of the Block Watch program in April.

The department’s Youth Division identified the young vandals and, with an agreement with the City of Richmond and support of Restorative Justice of Touchstone Family Association, the matter was resolved outside of the criminal court system.

Judge: Steep price paid for crime From page 13 The judge said she accepted the evidence of Truong and Stalker that the child was never part of the plot. “The Crown’s complainant is a most egregious offender, the one with probably the greatest moral culpability in all of this.”

Wedge said she accepted that the crime was not a dynamic or dangerous situation.

“The scenario was a fiction concocted by the complainant to steal a significant amount of money from his client.”

Stalker was sentenced to 40 months in prison, but after receiving credit for presentence custody, he has 2 1/2 months remaining. Truong received a five-month prison sentence, but will not have any time to serve because he had already spent the equivalent of two years in prison before being released on bail.

“Mr. Truong has accordingly paid a very steep price already for the very bad choice he made,” said the judge.

B.L. is not facing criminal charges.

he Richmond Chamber of Commerce (RCC) has reviewed the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project (GMTRP) and supports the concept of a replacement bridge for the following reasons:

! A 10-lane bridge would flood Richmond with traffic — A massive bridge will create new congestion problems and increased pollution on Richmond streets, and on the Oak Street Bridge. The cliché “You can’t build your way out of congestion” has been proven over and over again. Wider bridges just create wider traffic jams.

! Expanded capacity —The George Massey Tunnel is at capacity during rush hour and has been for many years. With projected population increases, an additional 100,000 vehicles per day are expected to use this corridor over the next 25 years. The GMTRP will create much needed expanded capacity, alleviating traffic congestion, making it easier and safer for customers, employees and goods/ services to move in and out of Richmond.

! Climate change — Adding one mile of new highway lanes increases carbon pollution by 100,000 tonnes over 50 years. The bridge proposal is in violation of Canada’s international commitment to limit global warming to 1.5 °C. ! There are better ways — In 2008, the provincial government promised a “RapidBus BC” service through the tunnel and even built new bus lanes on Highway 99 for them. Since then, transit has actually been cut. A two-lane rapid transit tunnel could be added for a much lower cost than a 10-lane bridge, but this is not on the table. ! Waste of public funds — The bridge is estimated to cost $3.5 billion and has every possibility of high cost over-runs like the Port Mann P3 (public-private-partnership) project. There are far better uses of our precious public money, including improving transit service in Richmond. ! Threat to farmland and food security — Richmond and Delta have some of the richest farmland in Canada and food prices are soaring. The bridge would increase the pressure to pave over Delta farmland, and threaten access to affordable local produce. ! Threat to the Fraser River — Removing the tunnel and building a high bridge would open the river to dredging for large fullyloaded ships carrying liquefied natural gas (LNG), coal and tar sands bitumen. The cumulative impacts will damage fish habitat and natural systems. A designated “Canadian Heritage River,” the Fraser is the most productive salmon river in the world. The

delta is an international “RAMSAR” wetlands site and is the most used stop for wintering waterfowl and birds of prey on the Pacific Flyway. The focus of shipping should remain in Vancouver’s Burrard Inlet. ! No business case — The government has not produced a clear business case for spending $3.5 billion dollars or more on this 10-lane bridge and much of their public information is misleading to say the least.

Even the City of Richmond has made a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to get documents that should be public. ! Traffic volumes — Volumes through the Massey Tunnel have not increased over the last decade and could be pushed even lower with improved bus service. A Federal Review Panel — the highest level of Environmental Assessment — would consider all the impact of the proposal concerns expressed by the public. We can do this right.

! Support local workforce — In addition to the 9,000 construction jobs that will be created by this project, the long-term economic and social advantages of the GMTRP are vital to the future sustainability of the Richmond economy. We estimate that approx. 10-20 per cent of the current Richmond workforce commutes daily via the tunnel. Based on increasing housing affordability challenges and population growth trends, this percentage can be expected to rise. ! Enhanced safety —The tunnel was built in the 1950s and does not meet modern highway and seismic standards. For this reason, twinning the existing tunnel is not a practical option. The proposed bridge will meet modern earthquake standards and will result in an expected 35 per cent decrease in the frequency of collisions. ! Farmland — Farming is vital to Richmond.

We recognize the GMTRP will impact some agriculture lands and commend the government’s commitment to no net loss of agriculture land. It’s anticipated the project could potentially result in a net gain of farmland. ! New transit options — The GMTRP will be built with the capacity for the addition of Light Rail Transit over the river and will also, for the first time, provide direct access for cycling and walking between Richmond and Ladner.

This project will also include 50 lane kilometres of dedicated transit and provide direct access to the Bridgeport Canada Line station.

! International trade — The George Massey corridor links Richmond and YVR directly to the South Fraser Perimeter Road and U.S. border. Additionally, this corridor helps facilitate nearly half a billion dollars in goods which move in/out of Port Metro Vancouver. The enhanced movement of people and goods is a significant economic generator.

While the Richmond Chamber supports the GMTRP, we are mindful of the concerns expressed by our members: ! Oak and 70th Avenue — This intersection is a known bottleneck. Two recent traffic analyses confirmed that approximately 62 per cent of north/south-bound commuters through the George Massey Corridor (during peak hours) are commuting to/from Richmond. Nevertheless, we strongly encourage the province to work with the City of Vancouver on this issue. ! Tolling — We encourage the province to work with Metro Vancouver, local municipalities, as well as the federal government to develop an integrated transportation management strategy, including infrastructure funding mechanisms, which address long term transportation and related land-use planning needs for the entire region.

he Flash and Deadpool might be well advised to take a long look over their shoulders.

About to steal the scene could be do-gooders such as The Hitter, The Amazing Blob, Weakling, Super Spirit Girl, Bloodwrath and, wait for it, The Undercover Super Teacher’s Pet. That’s if the Grade 4 students at Westwind elementary in Steveston get their way in the aftermath of their first ever Comic Con. The original superheroes — borne of the minds of the mostly nine-year-olds and starring in the kids’ hand-drawn comics — were on show and “for sale” to the rest of the school Wednesday.

And as the lunch hour approached, the buzz of excitement reverberating around the small classroom was almost levitating for the dozens of students and teachers visiting from other grades and classes.

This was a comic convention like no other, as Mr. (Carlos) Victoria’s army of writers swarmed, in the nicest possible way, around the curious “buyers” with their sales pitches, photocopied comics and detailed descriptions of their characters.

It was hard to believe, given the energy swirling the room, that the kids were working and, most likely, being assessed at that very moment.

“A small group of the students came to us (late last year) and asked for help to set up a comic club,” said Victoria, the Grade 4 students’ teacher.

“They were staying behind after class, up to a half hour after everyone else had gone, to work on this.

“But I thought, wait a minute, here are students willing to stay behind, there’s something here. So, in January, I basically

threw out persuasive writing and went with this (Comic Con) instead as part of their learning.”

The Comic Con, said Victoria, has been nothing short of a revelation and is tailormade for the new inquiry-based curriculum, being made mandatory by the B.C. government for K-Grade 9 this fall and currently being trialed across the province.

Students will continue to learn the basics like reading, writing and arithmetic, but the new curriculum, according to the Ministry of Education, will also focus on collaboration, critical thinking and communication skills to better prepare them for college, university and the work force.

“Some of these guys were up at 5 a.m. today to put the finishing touches to their comics,” said Victoria. “(Another student) thought he was going to have to choose between going to Disneyland and attending the Comic Con. He chose the Comic Con before being told that the two events didn’t actually clash.

“This is an amazing group, with 22 boys and eight girls, all with lots of leadership potential. But I noticed straight away that, when engagement goes up, such as with this Comic Con, everything else — such as disruptive behaviour — almost disappears.”

Victoria said he never framed the comic idea — the students had to come up with two original comics; one about a superhero who defends the school’s virtues and a more freestyle one about a sound — as

class work.

“They don’t see it as such; the task was always enjoyable,” he said.

“And in this day and age, when kids are easily distracted and their attention spans are sometimes very limited, this kind of engagement from the students is incredible.

“Teachers need to capitalize on students’ strengths and that’s why I was happy to let persuasive writing go and replace it with the Comic Con.”

O

ne of the main concerns expressed thus far by parents about the new curriculum is how accurate assessment of their child’s progress will be, given the subjective nature of the proposed, new curriculum’s content.

Victoria understands the angst, but wants to assure parents, despite the fact he still has many questions himself, mself, that students will still be learning what they need to be.

“Today, we sat in a sharing circle and one by one, the students dedicated their work to someone they knew; there were moms, dads, grandparents and even me, which was very flattering,” explained Victoria.

“But there’s a part of teaching that requires you to be OK to fail. This, however, has been a huge success.

“It helped kids experience having the power of choice; it empowered them to be in charge of their learning. And both comics covered language arts, responsibility and the fine arts, so it was every bit as valuable as persuasive writing.”

Furthermore, as expressed by many teachers since the new curriculum started to hit the headlines late last year, Victoria said the concept of inquiry-based learning is ““nothing new.” n “It’s a lot oof things tthat we’ve been doing b ffor some ttime. It perhaps brings things to the surface, but it’s not about checklists. And it ggives teachers more choice tto explore ideas and allows sstudents the same freedom.

“In terms of (grading) for the Comic Con, we set little th goals as we went along; what go needs to be in the draft; what ne needs to be in the good copy ne and things like an author profile.” pro Students’ progress was then monitored, added Victoria, through that structure and parents will be able to see where their child is at.

“You could see for yourself today, they were in total control,” he said.

“I asked them to greet their own guests and show them around the Comic Con. They were very empowered today. They were communicating, thinking for themselves and connecting.”

Dixon elementary principal Bill Juhasz was reflecting on the sentiments among the 100 or so parents who turned out for a “What is the New Curriculum” parent night, jointly hosted by his school and Blair elementary.

“Not a lot of parents knew much about the old curriculum, let alone the new one,” Juhasz said.

“This was half about the new curriculum and half about showcasing what great things our teachers do and the effort that already goes into planning dynamic lessons.”

Teachers from both schools, said Juhasz, are very much “on the learning curve and have been dabbling with (the new curriculum) for the last year and we will be better equipped to share more about it later (in the school year).”

The old model of learning was about “imparting information into empty vessels,” he added. “Now it’s experiential learning.”

A dozen different stations, each hosted by a different teacher from one of the two schools, greeted the parents with explanations of how that particular unit might work within the new curriculum and how it will be assessed.

A bell was rung every ten minutes and each parent group moved onto the next station.

“Teachers were collecting all the questions (from parents) throughout the night, so we can answer them more fully next time around,” said Juhasz.

The primary areas parents were concerned about, said the Dixon principal, were: 1. How can we help our kids at home?

2. Personalized learning? How can teachers achieve that when there are so many different children in the classroom?

3. If students are always allowed to choose how they are going to answer, how are they going to learn when they don’t have that choice?

In answer to the last question, Juhasz said teachers would still have to see all the “modals of learning” from the students throughout the semester or course, not just the ones the student favours.

“This kind of teaching and learning has been happening for decades, though, and our teachers have been involved in this as well,” said Juhasz.

“We will be having a meeting to reflect on the questions and understand what we can do to incorporate that in the next meeting with parents; which will be the parent-teacher meeting in September at the start of the

ducation Week in Richmond kicks off this Sunday, with a packed schedule of student activity and events throughout the city.

The annual event is hosted by the Richmond School District and is intended to celebrate teaching

excellence and student achievements.

Many activities will take place at Aberdeen Centre, where rolling art boards from elementary students will set the stage for Science Jam, the Skills BC regional competition, and a Popsicle bridge competition.

The ever-popular Science Jam, Tuesday at 4 p.m., will include more than 600 students from 10 schools displaying their science projects — the first of their kind from the redesigned curriculum, according to the district.

The non-competitive science fair will include Homma elementary students showing off their science experiments that were prepared under the supervision of scientists from MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (MDA), a local aerospace technology firm on Sea Island.

A keynote presentation from Science World scientists also highlights the evening’s activities.

Science will again be a key theme on Friday (March 4), when secondary students perform in the Skills BC competition, which aims to promote technology and career trades.

The competition features fashion technology, graphic design, gravity vehicles, website design, potential energy vehicles and public speaking.

A special skill, applied physics, will be on full display next Sunday (March 6), when students take part in the always-dramatic Popsicle bridge competition.

“The key is to use as many triangles as possible because they’re stronger,” explained Grade 9 Boyd student Annabel Tse, who will try

to build the lightest bridge that can support the most weight.

Thousands of people are expected to visit Aberdeen Centre for the various events.

If science isn’t your thing, the district has many students participating in the arts.

Drama will ensue at Theatre McNair next Friday (March 4), at 7 p.m., for the first showing of a locally produced adaptation of Sleepy Hollow.

The show will run for seven straight days (Tickets at 604-668-6575) at McNair.

Policies on sponsorship, LGBTQ reviewed

A

n ongoing review of school policies by the Richmond School Board will soon include the likes of corporate sponsorship and human rights, including sexual orientation.

The board is endeavoring to update many outdated policies, which may or may not change following the review.

The board’s policy committee chair, school trustee Dr. Eric Yung, told the Richmond News the board has already reviewed several policies and will continue to do so over the next year.

A review that will require sit-down discussions among trustees and the broader community concerns the district’s policy on commercialism, noted Yung.

“It’s being worked on right now. It’s horribly out of date, but it hasn’t been debated in front of the board,” said Yung.

The district’s commercialism policy was last updated in May 1993, when there was more taxpayer-backed funding for public schools.

Yung said one of the drivers leading to a review of this policy is lower funding by the provincial government since that time.

The policy states, no for-profit company or organization may involve a school in promoting its product or service unless the principal approves of it, believing there is “overriding value” for students.

This may, for example, apply to allowing certain branded vending machines in schools.

As well, companies are not allowed to publicize their activities in schools.

The existing policy states, “The board believes

that an adequate level of funding should be provided from tax revenues” and “in no case should exploitation of students be permitted.”

Yung said he would expect such an overarching philosophy to remain in Richmond.

“We need to insulate (students) from any commercial entity,” he said.

However, Yung said given the financial burdens placed on schools, a policy on sponsorships will be looked at.

“At what point is a sponsorship OK, and when is it not?” asked Yung.

He noted Richmond has no policy on the board reviewing an issue such as Chevron offering money to schools via gas purchases — something that Vancouver’s district has denied but others in the Lower Mainland have accepted.

“We have no policy about this. Is it good or bad? And that’s what we’ll need to talk about,” said Yung, noting the review will take up to a year’s time.

Richmond School District communications manager, David Sadler, said Chevron did make an offer last year but it didn’t reach the board due to the existing policy.

Meantime, the board is also reviewing its code of conduct.

“Much of it is just common sense . . . We have to fulfill the requirements of the BC Human Rights Code,” said Yung.

Richmond is one of a minority of school districts in B.C. to not have an explicit policy for non-cisgender and homosexual students.

The district does, however, recognize “the

diverse cultural, linguistic and ethnic nature of the Richmond community” in its district philosophy.

Speaking personally as a trustee, Yung said recognizing culture and ethnicity is important given the demographic diversity of Richmond. When it comes to sexual orientation or gender issues, Yung said he was inclined not to teach kids to identify one another in such a manner.

“I don’t want to teach target identification,” said Yung.

On the flip side, trustee Sandra Nixon has been pushing for more explicit language to better protect non-cisgender and homosexual students.

Another notable policy that has been affected by time is regarding technology. The News asked Yung how the board views cell phone use in schools.

Yung said individual schools generally create their own policies on such use. When asked about cell phones being used for teaching purposes, Yung said “there cannot be a situation where there are have and have-nots.”

He noted the district has provided each school with a cart of tablets so each student can use one, regardless of their financial situation.

The board has also worked to update its policy on administering medications — trained elementary teachers are expected to be able to assist younger students with prescribed medication, Yung said.

More recently, the board also updated its policy on video surveillance to meet privacy standards.

Teacher Fiona MacNicol-Clark has to do it quickly — her preps don’t last too long.

And sure enough, it’s not long after sitting down with the Richmond News that the stream of Grade 1 and 2 French Immersion students begins.

Hot and sweaty after gym class, Division 13 is directed, in French, by their ‘Madame’ to sit down on the carpet and review the class calendar.

On this day, a cold morning shower passed over Dixon elementary, making way for a warm, sunny afternoon.

Upon exhausting the students’ weather vocabulary, MacNicol-Clark sends them in two directions: outside and to the art table.

Most of them choose to go outside, so MacNicol-Clark takes her coffee and plants herself at the open doorway of her portable, with one eye on the playground and the other inside her classroom.

It doesn’t take long for her to extinguish a

“war” between the girls.

One girl, flustered at the events on the playground, begins speaking French, although she quickly turns to English to plead her case to the judge.

MacNicol-Clark, speaking French, finds an easy solution for all of them, by sending them in different directions.

“The bottom line is you have to keep kids happy and learning. And kids learn better when they’re happy and active,” said MacNicol-Clark.

“I will miss them,” she added.

MacNicol-Clark retires next month, after 30 years of teaching for the Richmond School District.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, the naturalborn linguist took to languages quickly, learning Latin, then German and eventually French.

She spent two years in her early 20s in the Black Forest, Germany, teaching ESL. MacNicol-Clark chuckles when she thinks of serving as the town’s translator for French soldiers and the locals, who often squabbled.

The 59-year-old came to Vancouver in 1980. She never looked back, as the city offered all the adventure she could think of.

With an education degree in hand from the University of Aberdeen, it took MacNicol-Clark a few years of tutoring to finally land a job at Dixon, where she’s been ever since.

She laughs at explaining how she married an Irishman and an Englishman after immigrating to Vancouver.

While the Irishman didn’t work out, the Englishman has stuck around, she said.

The two are now set to launch their golden years in Kelowna and Mexico, after selling their home in Steveston. She says she will miss her friends here but looks forward to meeting new people and taking on a different pace of life.

The soon-to-be snowbird notes she’s proud to have taught many teachers (many of them former students) in the later stage of her career.

While optimistic for her own future and

retirement, she worries about the new crop of teachers.

“I think respect for teachers has gone downhill somewhat, especially after the last strike. It was very distressing for us who have been professionals for so long. The teacher-bashing was very hurtful for those of us who have dedicated our careers to teaching children,” she said.

And while “there are a lot more opportunities for kids here,” than her native Scotland, she’s also concerned about ballooning class sizes.

“It’s pretty shocking to still have class sizes of 30 kids in this day and age. How can you possibly do personalized learning for every kid?” she wonders.

The tasty tale of a white, a red and a fizzy ERICHANSON Sips Happen

T

he 38th annual Vancouver Wine Festival wraps up this weekend. Italy is the featured country, although there were 1,470 wines from other countries to sample. If you didn’t attend any of the 54 tastings, seminars, lunches or dinners, check out my wine recommendations below and have a minifestival at your home.

My first pick is an Italian white, the Ruffino 2014 Orvieto Classico ($11.29). Like some Italian wines, the Orvieto is named after a geographical location.

The wine grapes are grown near the striking hill town of Orvieto in Umbria. Less than 90 minutes from Rome, Orvieto sits high above the valley floor atop a big chunk of tufo limestone, overlooking the cypress dotted Umbrian plains.

The Ruffino estate which produces the white has been in business since 1877 and now produces wine in seven Italian regions. Four indigenous grapes go into the aromatic blend:

grechetto, procanico, verdello and canaiolo bianco.

I enjoyed the floral and fruit aromas and the distinctive flavour of pears and apples along with a tasty lemon-lime tang.

Like many dry European whites, the Orvieto has a mineral component resulting from grapes being grown on limestone soil.

Very tasty with the albacore tuna tartare with meyer lemon and citrus-infused olive oil that I enjoyed at the Ruffino Festival Dinner earlier this week at Cin-Cin. Next, we head west to Tuscany, home of Italy’s best known red wine, Chianti. I uncorked the Rocca delle Macie 2013 Chianti Classico ($17.49). Remember the 1960s when the best thing about Chianti was its straw bottle that you stuck a candle in and not the thin wine?

The good news is that the Tuscan Chianti producers have drastically improved the formula. Instead of having two types of red grapes being watered down by two types of white grapes, they now have only red grapes in the blend: sangiovese and merlot.

MG, what have I done? If that’s your response the day, week or month after you retire, don’t be alarmed. You’re probably not the only one feeling that way.

It could be you’re just experiencing some momentary regret or maybe some guilt about your decision.

Is guilt the road less travelled? Heck, no! It’s the road MOST travelled for some retirees. Could be you’re feeling like the party is over and….now what?

Maybe you’re wondering how you’re going to fill all this extra time. Relax, it’s just the Reality Police smacking you upside the head.

Need I remind you — YOU’RE FREE NOW! That ought to give you a modicum of relief. If it doesn’t, give your head a shake. You’d better adjust to the reality that YOU are the boss of you now.

There may be people who ask why you’re retiring so young.

Remember, there’s no need to justify your decision to anyone.

Presumably you worked hard, paid your dues and showed up ready to work every day. You didn’t steal this retirement from anyone; you earned it.

Perhaps you’re feeling guilty that some of your retired friends have to work part-time to make ends meet. Or some may need to work to 65. It’s unfortunate, but it’s their life, their choice.

Not your circus, not your monkeys. If you can retire comfortably at 60, you’ve been doing something right all these years.

So pat yourself on the back.

On the other hand, if you haven’t done any pre-retirement preparations, and you have no plans or hobbies to fill your time, then go ahead and feel free to freak out. You have the right. But do it quickly then get on with life.

The long and short of it is this: don’t waste time on things you can’t change. Move forward, do your best, and accept your decisions. It’s okay to look back, but don’t stare.

My advice to new retirees is this: Learn how to find joy in simple things like walking in nature, sharing a meal with a friend, playing with your pet or reading a good book.

Nowhere is it written that you have to be productive every second of your retirement. It’s okay to just relax.

Then, once the newly retired dust has settled, think about how you want to spend the rest of your life. Consider satisfying options like exploring your spirituality and volunteering.

Retirement is like those digger games at the PNE, where you drop in your toonie and the digger picks up your gift and delivers it down the chute. Every day of retirement is a gift. Just learn how to appreciate it. Graciously.

ometimes what we long for is right in front of us, and like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, we already have what we need.

Each day, I see patients searching for a solution to their suffering that can come as feelings of emptiness, anxiety, low self-esteem or depression. They may expect that solution to come from medication or counseling.

An example is the burnt out accountant or business owner, giving 100 per cent of himself to his work, leaving nothing for friends, family or self. Another is the perfectionistic student, struggling to keep up with her extracurricular work and maintain an A+ average.

There are many unhappy in their own bodies, concerned about their weight or magnifying perceived imperfections. Some with wavy hair like it straight; those with straight hair want the waves.

When you look at those you love unconditionally – children, parents and friends, do you wish them to look different or “better” or to be anything other than who they are?

What we all need is self-compassion, an essential aspect of emotional wellbeing.

Self-compassion is an extension of the authentic love we more freely give to others.

Through the habits of negative self-talk, guilt, perfectionism or self-neglect, we can become our own worse critics and fail to give ourselves the care we need.

Through the magic of self-compassion, our world becomes a better place – even if

nothing else has changed. We struggle less.

We are happier, less judgmental and more accepting of our selves and others. When we look in the mirror, we smile instead of furrowing our brows.

How can you nurture self-compassion?

Practice this lovingkindness meditation borrowed from Buddhism. Picture someone you care about, someone who makes you smile when you think of them – a child, parent or friend, and say in your mind, “May you be happy, healthy, peaceful and safe.”

You can nurture compassion for others, by imagining their faces and saying, “May you be happy, healthy, peaceful and safe.” Foster self-compassion by saying, “May I be happy, healthy, peaceful and safe.”

Be mindful of critical, judgmental thoughts towards others and yourself. One key to a happier marriage is to offer five honest positive comments for every negative one. Be a good partner to yourself.

A good parent ensures the children are well fed, exercise, play safe and get enough sleep, yet so many good parents don’t extend that care to themselves. Be a good parent to yourself – eat well, don’t skip meals, avoid recreational drugs and limit alcohol. Engage in daily exercise and get enough rest.

Being human, we are by nature imperfect yet we are still beautiful and worthy of love.

Be kind to yourself, and may you be happy, healthy, peaceful and safe.

Dunfee will take Richmond News readers along his journey to Rio; sharing thoughts on training, competing and what it’s like to be a top-level athlete.

ace day is finally here! As I gear up for my first 20km of the year down in Adelaide, I am very excited to see where my fitness is at.

Looking back over the last few months of training in Australia, I don’t think I’ve ever strung together such consistent training, despite a few hiccups here and there. This has gotten me feeling fit and confident heading into Sunday’s race.

When I last checked in, I had found a rhythm and was putting some good hard training weeks together.

That momentum carried through to our post-study testing period starting with a good VO2max test recording a value of 70ml/kg/ min.

This value reflects the body’s ability to convert oxygen that you breathe in into energy for your muscles to use. A typical inactive person will have a value around 35, while a recreational athlete may be in the low 50s.

The test for us is performed by walking on a treadmill at 15km/hr with the incline steadily rising until exhaustion, all the while wearing a mask that analyzes the air you

breathe out.

Having a high VO2max seems to be a prerequisite for being an elite athlete.

However, it doesn’t do a great job differentiating between elite athletes, as there are so many other important variables at that level.

Suffice to say that 70ml/kg/min is enough to allow me to compete at a high level, but I know Olympic medalists who have lower and, conversely, slower athletes who have higher.

The value is also largely inherited, with training only able to move it so much, so I have my parents to thank for that in addition to their nurturing.

The next day was our 10km race. Being in such a heavy block of training, I was very satisfied with a third place finish, walking the 10km in 40:24.

While we had much more favorable weather than the pre-test 10km, this was still an improvement of nearly three minutes, so I knew the hard training was paying off.

The final day of testing was a 25km walk with a kilometre on the treadmill in the beginning, middle and end with the VO2

mask to measure our oxygen consumption (without having to do the WHOLE thing on the treadmill!). I covered the 25km in just over one houre and 52 minutes, or about 4:30 per kilometre.

This was a big, eight-minute improvement from the pre-test and further proof that I was trending in the right direction.

The last two weeks of training have seen a reduction in my training volume down to 120-130km/ week, but an increase in the intensity.

This is typical of how endurance athletes prepare for a race and is referred to as the taper.

This has helped me freshen up both physically and psychologically and ready to race on Sunday.

After the race, I will have a relaxing few days in Sydney to be a tourist, before heading back to Richmond for a couple of weeks.

After four months away, I’m greatly looking forward to some solitude getting my kilometers in around the dyke.

Football standouts sign with CIS schools Mark Booth

A pair of Hugh Boyd football standouts will be continuing the next chapter of their careers on opposite ends of the country.

Patrick Ruvalcaba and Tyler Moxin signed national letters of intent with the Acadia Axeman and UBC Thunderbirds resepctively.

Both are pencilled in to be on the active roster of their teams for the 2016 CIS season next fall.

Ruvalcaba is taking his game to one of the longtime hotbeds of Canadian university football. The Wolfville, Nova Scotia school is part of the Atlantic University Sport Conference that includes Maritime rivals Saint Mary’s, Moutain Allison and St. Francis Xavier.

He also weighed interest from Ontario schools before agreeing to Acadia’s offer and following the path of a recent Boyd alumni. Lineman Chris Cartwright also played for Acadia and is now back in B.C. as a member of the Trojans coaching staff.

“Coach Cartwright had nothing but good things to say about it,” said Ruvalcaba.

“He thought it was an ideal environment for an 18-year-old going right into university football.”

Ruvalcaba thrived at middle linebacker for the Trojans where he led the team in tackles. The Axemen plan to take advantage of his athleticism and move him to the SAM (strong outside) linebacker position where he will be used in pass coverage situations as well.

He grew up in the Richmond Minor Football program, winning a pair of provincial nine man championships at the Bantam level and earned the team MVP award in the process. Ruvalcaba then transferred from Burnett to Boyd for two seasons of high school ball.

Now it’s back to playing Canadian rules for his university career. The smaller rosters with

the Raiders and Trojans only enhanced his versatility which is an asset at the next level.

“I played middle linebacker, running back and special teams (at Boyd). I basically never left the field,” he laughed.

Moxin only wishes he had such a prominent role in his final year of high school ball.

The reigning Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Year saw his season end before it even started with a torn ACL. The initial injury occurred before the team’s spring training session in June when Moxin was up in Kamloops. The hope was to somehow get through the season playing with a brace but he would re-injure it again in early September. There was no choice but

to shutdown his Grade 12 year.

Boyd had lost its starting quarterback, safety and kicker. It was a devastating blow to a program that had the potential to compete for a provincial championship.

Surgery and a long recovery process eventually followed. Moxin thought he had no choice but to play junior ball next season until the Vanier Cup champions came calling.

“I really didn’t think UBC (or any school) was an option when (recruiting coordinator) Paul Orazietti called to say they were interested in me as a defensive back,” said Moxin. “Next thing you know, I’m visiting the campus couple weeks later and I’m offered

a scholarship.

“Coach (Blake) Nill says they are losing quite a few defensive backs and the plan is for me to be playing (next season).”

The former Team B.C. player faces another five months of rehabilitation before his knee is back to 100 percent. That would nearly coincide with the start of UBC’s training camp.

Two other graduating standouts at Boyd, Gabe Saklofsky and Darby Kwan, will likely go the junior route before heading to a university program. Kwan recently played on the offensive line for the U18 B.C. team, while Saklofsky is expected to move to receiver after playing running back at Boyd.

t’s been a breakthrough season in a big way for one of the mainstays in the Richmond Senior Soccer League.

AC Richmond has captured the First Division regular season title in convincing fashion — rolling to an unbeaten 16-2-0 record in the 10-team table. They were 11 points clear of runner-up Richmond All-Blacks (12-3-3) and had top spot locked up weeks earlier.

The dominating run was somewhat unexpected given AC only managed a 5-123 record in the RSSL’s old Premier Division. The league reconfigured for the 2015-16 campaign — eliminating the Premier flight entirely and expanding the First Division to feature the top 10 teams.

AC Richmond’s latest infusion of talent turned the club into an instant contender.

Rida El Chami, Marcus Ribi and Amrit Nijjar have all been key additions. They joined a younger nucleus that includes Danny Neufeld, Jasmit Dhari and Jason Dulai.

Throw in veterans Maninder Mann, Jithan Virk, Amar Bhullar and Shon Samujh and terrific team chemistry was created.

“Our past teams have had great and not so great years but with this current mix of older Richmond youth players, along with younger ones (it has all come together) for an undefeated season so far,” explained manager/ coach Indy Dulay.

The team was originally formed back in 1979 by English immigrants who had come to Canada in their mid20s but were no longer playing the game competitively.

AC Richmond went through a major transition in 2005 when a number of the original players’ sons joined the team. At one point it was quite the family affair with four dads, along with four sons and nephews all in uniform.

It was an end of an era four years later when long serving coach/manager and team leader Jaswant Mann stepped aside to spend more time with his family — passing the reigns onto Dulay and Mann.

Throughout its near four decade history, the club’s vision has remained the same.

The underlying theme of the team has always been to provide guidance on the soccer field but, more importantly, to teach youth how to become beneficial partners in the community.

John worked for over thirty years at BCTEL/TELUS and was an active member of the Federation of Telephone Workers.

Over the years John enjoyed activities with his family, including their various sports, wonderful summers at "The Lake", and family gatherings. In retirement John and Pat enjoyed several cruises, many travels in their RV, golf, time with family and friends at Sandy Point and numerous getaways to Nevada. He will be remembered for his sense of humour, smile, dedication to family and his unique way of playing 31. We will miss him dearly. As per John’s wishes a private family gathering will be held at a later date.
