There will be face painting, food trucks, live music and a raffle. Last night was the first of four such events to run Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons for the next two weeks.

I’m sure it will be a colourful affair — which, of course, is the idea. I got my invite to the festivities dubbed “Discovery Days” earlier this week. It came in the form of a postcard from development company Onni, delivered directly to my home. On one side of the card are details about when and where, along with colourful pictures of happy children, hipsters browsing artisan stalls and live music — guitar and saxophone, no less.

On the other side of the card is a great expanse of grey. It’s the boardwalk, but not as I’ve ever seen it. Pictured is a great expanse of grey concrete, beside a wide grey river, under a vast grey sky. The scene is utterly devoid of life.

Onni must have had their cameras there for some time to get that shot. I walk this boardwalk twice a week, and it’s always bustling.

But, I get it; the six buildings on the site stand mainly empty, and the reason, according to Onni, is because the site’s current zoning limits who can move in. These Discovery Days and Onni’s plea to “Imagine more at Imperial Landing,” as the postcard says, is intended to create public pressure on the city to change its zoning so Onni can lease to the likes of a bank, a private-members gym and a high-end grocer — at least that’s the start.

And now for a little context…

When BC Packers sold the property, the city could have zoned the area commercial/retail, meaning the sale price would have been significantly more. But it kept the zoning as industrial (more specifically, Mixed Maritime Use) because the city had a particular vision for that area which would serve the general public — not just Onni’s bottom line.

Onni bought the property knowing what was intended. But now that it’s built, the company is asking (yet again) for the city to ditch that Granville Island-like vision, claiming it can’t find enough, in fact any, tenants that fit the criteria. Onni will even throw in $3 million, not to mention face painting, to sweeten the deal.

Meanwhile, switching from industrial to commercial zoning will increase the property’s value by an estimated $20 million.

So, is the maritime vision truly inviable, or did Onni just agree to it with an eye to waiting for the city to buckle on zoning so it can charge higher leases? No one likes the empty buildings, but Onni’s got deep pockets and its managers don’t depend on residents voting them in every four years.

The maritime dream may not work, but if we’re going to let Onni out of serving what was intended to be a public interest, it should be replaced with another — a park, a library, a community facility, not just a chunk of change and a boardwalk party.

If an agreement can be reached, I would also plead that consultation must be done with the city and the citizens and merchants of Steveston as to the makeup of businesses which will go in there.

Steveston doesn’t need any more coffee shops, nail salons, hair salons, banks, pharmacies, thrift stores, book stores, Chinese food restaurants, sushi restaurants, daycare centres or dental/medical clinics.

This beautiful and unique setting should not be used for the mundane simply as a way to generate rent for the developer and tax dollars for the city.

Steveston is Richmond’s jewel and should be treated and displayed as such.

Marina is only solution Dear Editor, Re: “Onni hopes fest will garner public support,” News, Feb. 17.

Further to the “Mexican standoff” between the city and Onni over rezoning of the Imperial Landing buildings, a solution requires the city to finally decide whether to install a marina on the city-owned water lots opposite Building 5.

Without a marina, there is little prospect of maritime enterprises locating at Imperial Landing.

A marina would require Building 5 for marine services and would attract tenants such as Steveston Marine and Hardware.

Onni wants to have a fitness centre in Building 5, which requires a very expensive installation that, once completed, could not easily be moved.

City council should fast-track a marina study on the understanding that if a marina is not approved within the next year, Building 5 could be rezoned.

In the meantime, Building 5 use should continue to be restricted to “Mixed Mari-

time” with an added permitted use to allow market stalls for craftspeople, artists and farmer’s market activities at low lease rates.

Onni’s proposed fitness centre could instead be installed in Building 2 where Onni wants to have a grocery that, as Coun.

Harold Steves stated, would be much better located in the new Rod’s Building Supplies development, where there will be a lot more parking at grade level.

Building 2 would also have sufficient additional space for minor medical services such as physiotherapy and sports medicine.

Certainly, given the history, the largest possible rezoning compensation payment should be extracted from Onni for Steveston community use.

Expansion of the Steveston Community Centre to accommodate a larger library and a roof for the pool are priorities.

Time to settle with Onni and make those projects a reality.

Dear Editor, Re: “Onni hopes fest will garner public support,” News, Feb. 17.

First of all, it’s time for all parties — Onni, City of Richmond, Steveston merchants — to stop fighting and start working together to do something about this now four-year problem.

To keep it zoned as light marine just doesn’t make sense to me.

It would take years and tall ships full of money to build a marina with all the necessary accompanying infrastructure and environmental considerations it would need.

Imperial Landing should have tenants that are unique and which are going to draw people to Steveston and, as a consequence, make the whole village a livelier place for all, including the existing

So death doesn’t end it all?

Last week, the Court made an interesting decision in the Wills Variation case of Eastman v.

Eastman. The case was launched in 2003, after the deceased’s widow felt, in essence, that her life interest in the house was an unfair bequest after an 18-year (second) marriage.

Her negotiations with the Executors (the deceased’s children) were amicable, though, and she remained in the house anyway, as if under a life interest.

But few steps were taken in the case over the next 12 years, and the widow died in 2015. The Executors then applied to have the case dismissed for “want of prosecution,” which is essentially to have the case ended because nothing was done for so long. The Court did not dismiss the case.

Though indeed no steps had been taken for a long time, there were sound reasons. Certainly the parties were in communication, and note that the widow’s passing does not prevent her Wills Variation case from proceeding. The Estate does not appear large, but it should be interesting given that both the husband and wife are now deceased.

Chamber support questionable Dear Editor, Re: “Richmond businesses onside with new bridge,” Advertising feature, Feb. 17.

The Richmond Chamber of Commerce is working against the City of Richmond in its press release when it states that the Massey Tunnel Replacement Project is supported by its members and that, “Richmond Chamber members have clearly expressed support for this project and “87 per cent were in support of the provincial government’s proposed bridge.”

These comments are diametrically opposed to the position of Richmond City Council, so I have to ask: How many members belong to the Richmond Chamber of Commerce and how many responded?

If it was a small percentage of the members, how is this statistically correct?

What was the exact question asked and was it a valid question?

Did the survey ask whether twinning the tunnel was a preferred option?

While I agree that improvements need to be made to the Massey Tunnel, the mega bridge is not the best option.

It will be North America’s longest cable bridge and that’s too big.

There will be a loss of some of the best farmland in Canada.

The three-level high interchange at Steveston Highway will be far too big and will negatively affect The Gardens condos and surrounding businesses.

The tall, iconic structure will be located on land that is at “extreme risk” of liquefaction.

The Westminster Highway traffic lights will remain unchanged, which is nonsense, since this is a bottleneck for traffic exiting Highway 99.

The Oak and 70th Ave. intersection will receive no improvement so, subsequently, this project will simply move traffic from south of the tunnel to south of the Oak Street Bridge.

The budget of $3.5 billion should be going towards light rail or buses and I feel this project will set us back 40 years in terms of those improvements.

The height and scope of the bridge is not required for traffic and has been designed for the sole purpose of industrializing the Fraser River with a major increase to shipping.

Environmentally, the project will risk the Fraser River and the estuary due to increased tanker traffic.

Economically, it will risk the fishing industry and tourism industries.

If you are a chamber member and/ or business owner and this survey does not speak for you, please speak out now and tell the provincial government how you feel.

If you employ people who would be burdened by the tolls and you will be affected by this project, please speak out now and tell the provincial government how you feel.

No news like good News for bus riders Dear Editor, The Richmond News rocks!

For two years, since the bus stop was removed to accommodate more truck traffic, bus riders heading to the Ironwood Mall were made to disembark on the far side of Steveston Highway and brave the intersection at No. 5 Rd.

Just a couple of months after a frustrated bus driver wrote the News to point out the danger that presented for disabled and elderly passengers, a new bus stop suddently appeared.

Local mayors are lobbying Ottawa for a share of federal stimulus money for transit. But that money would go to big

projects like SkyTrain, not little workaday things like accessible bus stops.

Transit users could lobby local politicians or they could just write the News (which the politicians read) and maybe they’d actually get it done.

Gaps mean we will remain imprisoned Dear Editor, If we are concerned with maintaining any semblance of a sustainable and dignified existence on this planet, we must recognize that our best hope for doing so lies in finding ways to relate to each other that will work to the benefit of everyone, not just a few.

But with each disagreement, conflict, or further separation from each other (economically, ideologically, religiously and culturally), we diminish, rather than enhance, our chances of leaving a truly healthy and dignified world for those who will eventually have to live with the consequences of what we do and how we behave today.

How dignified can we possibly feel, either individually or collectively, when homeless people push their meager belongings around in grocery carts and beg in front of stores a mere block away from perpetually unoccupied $2-$3 million houses, or when people refuse to interact with each other simply because of differences in

skin colour and/or cultural beliefs and practices or when we remain reluctant to do what is really necessary to prevent further degradation of our natural environment?

When it comes to issues such as war, prejudice, and culture-based divisiveness, we steadfastly refuse to learn anything from our past mistakes and transgressions, and when it comes to finding ways to work together on strategies for protecting and improving the lives of everyone on the planet, we prefer instead to cloister ourselves in our separate tribes and belief systems and concentrate on the things that define our differences, rather than those that we share as a species and members of a global society.

As long as there are huge gulfs between the haves and the have-nots, and as long as we remain prisoners of our cultural, religious and ideological differences, there can be no true dignity for anyone, even for those who are the most privileged and powerful.

Meixner: MLAs slow on hospital tower Graeme Wood

he Richmond Hospital Foundation said it’s willing to raise $40 million of the $283 million needed for a new north tower, which is overcrowded and at risk of collapse in a moderate earthquake.

“We need a new, acute care tower to replace the existing original tower built in 1966,” said the foundation’s CEO Natalie Meixner, who is appealing for the provincial government to fund the difference.

“The old tower was never built to withstand earthquakes. In the case of a moderate to strong earthquake, it would collapse or be subject to liquefaction.”

According to a 2005 seismic report of the hospital, the north (acute care) tower would likely collapse, or partially collapse with “moderate shaking.” This fact was reiterated to Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) in a 2011 report.

Meixner warns that any localized earthquake, of 6.0 or higher on the Richter scale, would jeopardize the lives of anyone inside the tower.

Despite the reports and her foundation’s advocacy for a new facility, Meixner told Richmond city council-

lors on Monday that her appeals to local MLAs are “not moving quickly enough.”

She asked councillors to advocate, however symbolically, for a new tower, which they have done, via a resolution to write to the B.C. government.

Aside from the seismic risks, the acute care tower is also overflowing with patients. “Our city’s growth has outpaced Richmond Hospital’s capacity,” said Meixner.

Richmond had 50,000 residents and 132 beds in 1966. Now the city has about 215,000 residents and 223 funded beds.

A growing seniors population is also a concern of Meixner — by 2030, Richmond will have about 65,000 seniors; right now it only has about 30,000.

The tower is preventing modern healthcare standards from being delivered, said Meixner, noting patients often find themselves in the hallway.

Furthermore, the tower has old rooms that accommodate four people, whereas new healthcare standards typically mean one patient to a room, to prevent spread of disease, noted Meixner.

skipped ahead of Richmond in the VCH priority line, with the help of a $25 million private donation.

VCH spokesperson Gavin Wilson told the Richmond News a new tower, if approved today, would take about seven years to complete, at an estimated cost of up to $283

million million.

Wilson said the VCH board has approved a new tower concept and the next step is to get approval from the Ministry of Health.

It’s unclear why it has taken 11 years to only get to the discussion stage of a new tower.

That question was posed to Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap, who told the News he was aware of the hospital’s seismic reports and has been in talks with VCH. “I understand one of the issues (at the hospital) is the seismic status of the buildings. By and large, the buildings in the VCH region are up to standard,” said Yap. When asked about the delay, Yap said: “Healthcare is a major investment... Investments in hospitals continues to grow.”

When asked who is responsible in the event of a tower collapse, Yap said: “No one can really predict when an earthquake will happen, but clearly it’s an issue all are mindful of.”

Yap said no concrete costs have been determined for the tower, but an estimated $12 million seismic upgrade wasn’t feasible; he said he’d prefer a new tower.

On Monday, Coun. Bill McNulty questioned Premier Christy Clark’s infrastructure priorities.

“She’s given us a bridge but we want a hospital,” said McNulty.

Yap said the bridge and the hospital are both important, but the province chose to build a bridge first because congestion was “a drag on economic opportunities.”

Higher land value should be part of the deal: Steves Graeme Wood

he gap between what the City of Richmond is asking for and what Onni Group is willing to pay for rezoning at Imperial Landing is “significant but not astronomical,” according to Coun. Alexa Loo. However, that’s because Onni Group isn’t factoring in the increase in assessed land value the company will inherit should the city allow commercial retail stores at Steveston’s boardwalk.

Coun. Harold Steves said a city-commissioned study indicates Onni will receive an estimated $20 million more in land value if the maritime mixed-use (MMU) zoning is turned into commercial retail space.

Steves said the city would want in the range of 80 per cent of that figure.

Onni is presently offering $3 million in community amenity contributions for rezoning.

Chris Evans, an Onni representative, said the offer was based on how much money the company could receive from leasing the space over and above what it could receive should the land stay MMU zoning over a 10year period.

Whereas a marine hardware store, such as Steveston Marine and Hardware, may pay only $15 per square foot (MMU) rate), a bank, such as TD Canada Trust, would pay upwards of $38 per square foot (commercial retail rate), while other shops would pay around $26 per square foot.

After accounting for realtor commissions, tenant improvements and some vacancy, Onni estimates it would gain about $2 million in lease rates.

beyond by offering $3 million.

However, Evans said a rise in assessed land value, as a result of the rezoning, was not a factor in Onni’s offer.

Steves is of the opinion it should be.

Evans said the city only recently asked Onni for lease rate differences.

City of Richmond spokesperson Ted Townsend said it was premature to comment on any aspects of their proposal and/or recommendations to city council.

Townsend also said it is “premature” for Onni be be hosting public consultation.

Community amenity contributions (CACs) are common in rezoning processes. They typically “reward” a community with money for the likes of a childcare facility or a park/ public space in exchange for zoning that allows increased density, which in turn raises the value of land prior to construction.

According to the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, which regulates CACs, the lift approach is usually not preferred because it raises the cost of housing and office space.

The ministry prefers “a package of amenities that makes sense given the development being proposed.”

However, Townsend called the rezoning application an “extraordinary circumstance” granted the boardwalk buildings have already been built. He added it was too soon to discuss the impact of land value.

After Onni constructed the six buildings under the MMU zoning, it initially offered $1.5 million in 2013 for rezoning.

Loo said she could foresee a point in which another lengthy standoff ensues.

If Onni doesn’t think it is economically feasible, then it will be able to sit on the property again, said Loo.

Demolition bylaw proposed Graeme Wood

s real estate speculation and house flipping soars, resulting in single-family home demolitions potentially reaching record levels, the City of Richmond is proposing a new bylaw to deal with residential construction waste.

This week, at the request of Richmond city council, city planners proposed a Demolition Waste and Recyclable Materials Bylaw aimed at achieving a minimum of 70 per cent diversion of waste from residential construction sites.

In order to oversee the bylaw, the city will hire a new building inspector.

Under the new bylaw, No. 9516, the demolition materials must be taken to licensed recycling and/ or waste facilities or reused in accordance with recycling guidelines.

The inspector will have the discretion to waive the bylaw requirements for health and safety, or emergency considerations (damage from fire).

Builders will be required to pay a $250 nonrefundable fee as part of the demolition permit application process. They must also pay a $2 per square foot deposit — so $8,000 on a 4,000 square foot home. If more than 70 per cent diversion is achieved, that deposit is refunded. If less than 70 per cent is achieved, the refund decreases on a sliding scale.

Builders were consulted on the bylaw, according to a report to the public works committee. Builders will also be required to submit a recycling plan and a post-demolition compliance report.

Violation penalties run up to $10,000.

The bylaw is expected to come into force on April 1, if passed by city council on Monday.

New home buyers benefit but not in Richmond Vancouver Sun

The city has a goal of 80 per cent household waste diversion, but many residents have been critical of council’s so-called “sustainability framework and initiatives to improve the short and long term livability of our city,” in light of the demolitions.

In 2015, there were 512 home demolitions in Richmond, according to demolition permit reports.

In 2011, 473 homes were demolished, the previous highest figure since 2006 — the first year such data has been posted online for Richmond.ca. Since 2009, an annual average of 351 homes have met the wrecking ball.

The report notes city council requested an examination of incentives for house preservation and/or disincentives for demolitions.

The report states punitive fees on demolitions are not possible under the Community Charter, the provincial legislation that governs municipal affairs and fees.

“A fee for local government services must be related to the cost of providing those services.”

f you are a first-time buyer and you are buying an existing home, you are out of luck — you must still pay the transfer taxes on all sales over $475,000.

But if first-time buyers want to buy a newly built house, the thresholds to avoid paying the transfer tax have now been increased to $750,000 (for a full exemption) and $800,000 (partial exemption).

The catch is, there are almost no new single family homes in Richmond under $800,000. It’s impossible to know what homes will cost in the future, but housing assessments for 2015 give us a snapshot of what homes are worth in various regions of the province.

Landcor Data Corp., a Vancouver analytics firm, crunched the numbers to reveal where there are many or just a few existing homes assessed under this price point.

In cities such as Richmond, Burnaby and North Vancouver, a majority of condos and townhouses are priced under $800,000, but only a fraction of detached houses.

In Metro Vancouver, the tax

change should mostly help people who want to live in Delta, Surrey or Langley, where all condos and townhouses, and three-quarters of detached houses, are below $800,000.

In New Westminster, nearly all condos and townhouses fall below this threshold, but only half of detached homes.

In Vancouver, virtually none of the detached homes were valued under $800,000, but you could buy half the townhouses and almost all the condos for that amount.

The situation was worse in West Vancouver, where no detached homes and only nine per cent of townhouses were below $800,000, and only half the condos fell below this benchmark.

In nearly all rural towns — including Armstrong, Courtenay, Cranbrook and Castlegar — and many semi-rural cities — such as Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Maple Ridge, Hope, Kamloops, Campbell River, Nanaimo and Mission — almost all detached houses, attached houses and condominiums are assessed at under $800,000.

A tipping point at 50 years This month Richmond Hospital reaches a major milestone celebrating its 50-year anniversary. Since 1966, Richmond Hospital has been looking after the health care needs of all of us in Richmond. And while the hospital celebrates the past half century of talented, dedicated and compassionate care here at home, the future is cause for concern. Simply put, the original patient care tower, now 50 years old is seismically unstable, obsolete and at the end of its lifespan and the community continues to grow, outpacing Richmond Hospital’s capacity.

The original six-storey tower, known as the North Tower, was built to withstand strong cross-winds, not earthquakes.

According to engineering reports, It would sustain major structural damage in a moderate to strong earthquake, with the possibility of partial or complete collapse. On Dec. 29 we had a 4.7-magnitude reminder that we live in a seismically active area and the recent earthquake in Taiwan which toppled buildings should serve as a warning.

When Richmond Hospital first opened, it had 132 beds to serve the community’s 50,000 residents. Today, Richmond is at 213,000 residents and counting, but the hospital has only approximately 225 funded beds. Our population has more than quadrupled, but the number of beds has not even doubled. And the number of patients will continue to climb: Richmond can expect 20,000 more people in the next five years. By 2030, there will be a quarter of a million people here living in our city.

in Canada at 84.9 years. As you can imagine, this will place extreme pressure on our hospital’s ability to provide acute care services.

Health care is also delivered differently today than it was in 1966. We know more now. New hospitals in B.C., for example, are designed with private rooms, the number one way to reduce exposure to dangerous infections.

Richmond needs a new acute care tower.

If there were a commitment today from Vancouver Coastal Health and the Provincial Government, it would still take at least five years to design and build a tower. We understand there are many health care priorities in the province and the region, but the tower’s seismic issues have been known for more than 10 years.

And everybody can see that Richmond is not going to stop growing. We believe Richmond’s needs are strong.

To put the need into in perspective, no other hospital in B.C. has fewer acute care beds per capita than Richmond.

Many of the recently approved hospitals in B.C. have twice as many beds per capita as Richmond.

That’s why we are drawing attention to this issue and championing the replacement of a building that has reached the end of its 50-year life cycle.

Richmond Hospital Foundation has committed to raise donor funds to contribute to the cost of the project, but we need a Vancouver Coastal Health and provincial government funding commitment as well.

Richmond’s population is getting older overall. In fact, according to BC Stats our community has the fastest growing seniors population in the entire province.

In 2014, there were 31,000 seniors in Richmond. That number is expected to jump by 44% in the next five years and more than double by 2030. Richmond’s seniors have the longest life expectancy

he jury in the coroner’s inquest into the 2012 death of a Richmond man following a police standoff has come back with several recommendations for police and the ministries of health and education.

The jury delivered its verdict late Tuesday afternoon after more than a week of testimony from several witnesses in the death of 48-year-old Mehrdad Bayrami who was shot by Delta police Const. Jordan MacWilliams during an armed standoff outside the Starlight Casino in New Westminster.

Following deliberations, the five-person jury came back with several recommendations for the Coroners Service, police services and the ministries of education and health.

Many of the recommendations centre around public awareness and education on mental health, improving access to services and reducing the stigma around mental illness.

The jury recommended that police services in the province create a system to flag and automatically initiate a review of multiple calls or files relating to a single person with the goal of initiating intervention, if needed.

It was also recommended that all police emergency response teams establish a formal agreement with a number of psychologists to support negotiators during incidents.

The jury also recommended that the Min-

istry of Health create a directory of mental health early intervention services that is available to both medical professionals and the general public; and that the Ministry of Education create a curriculum for kindergarten through to Grade 12 that addresses mental health issues.

The inquest heard last week how Const.

MacWilliams was a member of the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team (MIERT) at the time and was one a several officers who responded to the call of a domestic disturbance at the Starlight Casino in New Westminster on the morning of Nov. 8, 2012.

Bayrami was armed with a gun and had briefly taken ex-girlfriend Tetiana Piltsina hostage in the parking lot.

Piltsina testified that, before the incident at the casino, Bayrami was harassing her after they broke up in 2012, but Richmond RCMP didn’t take it seriously, at first.

Piltsina told police she was scared and Bayrami was following her everywhere and even put a GPS tracker in her car. He also called her 60 to 70 times a day.

he automotive market is vast and generalizing about it is challenging. Nevertheless, we see frequent sales reports—monthly, if not weekly— and pinpointed—country-by-country or even state-bystate or province-by-province—and by brand, model, and price category.

Reminders, however, of the cyclical nature of the market may be helpful. Eight years ago, the US and Canadian governments were bailing out some automotive manufacturers. Today, vehicle sales are brisk and record-breaking to the upside in many parts of the world. And stretching back three decades, oil prices were high and ‘peak oil’ was said to be imminent spawning fuel-efficient compact vehicles.

Today, the oil market resembles nothing like the old forecasts, and trucks, SUVs, and crossovers—with much improved fuel efficiency—again rank as bestsellers.

When, in the mid-2000s, pollution concerns became the fixation, alternative fuels, hybrids, and the electric car were expected to be the imminent solutions.

Today, alternative ‘fuels’ like ethanol, natural gas, and compressed hydrogen still cannot compete pricewise or convenience-wise. Despite significant advancements in battery design and power output, and the likes of Tesla and BMW’s i8, for example— skyrocketing electricity prices and the stalled-out development of plug-in infrastructure are contributing to the slow uptake of e-cars. In fact, some automotive journalists now say that subsidized renewables have

driven and will continue to drive electricity prices so high that they have effectively ‘killed’ the e-car. (Who would have guessed it?)

But for all the economic ups and downs and the buffeting by ‘macro-trends’ and ‘futuristic forecasting’, certain constants are discernable in car buying. Take any ‘top ten’ list at almost any given moment and you will see consumer choices that reflect wide-spread preferences…and here come the generalities: light trucks are the most popular vehicle type on the road because of their functionality and their reliability. They give value for money.

In 2015, Ford F-series trucks were the best-selling truck in the world and the third best-selling vehicle on the planet. Crossover SUVs are everywhere now: Toyota’s RAV4 and Honda’s CR-V are bestsellers: functional, reliable, fuel-efficient because light and small-ish but also good to excellent in safety ratings.

In the sedan category: the Hyundai Elantra, the Honda Civic, Toyota’s Camry and Corolla, and Ford’s Focus —albeit with some fluctuation, for many years now these vehicles have hung in on best-seller lists because they are reliable, fuel-efficient, safe, comfortable, well-designed and functional. They give value for money.

In the luxury car market there is a long consistent history of total sales numbers reflecting the smaller size of this market. Branding issues are critically important this segment. Regulation has ensured that innovative safety features must be incorporated in all vehicles regardless of their particular market segment and fuel efficiency requirements mean that fuel and engine technologies are more uniform. Vehicle quality is an expectation for even the most humble offering, so expensive vehicles must justify their price in the main by cosmetic and styling details more than anything else.

n just over two weeks, the TV show that made Steveston even more famous will celebrate its 100th episode.

On Sunday, March 6, Once Upon a Time (OUAT) will hit the century mark of telling its hit fairytale from the town of Storybrooke, Maine — aka Steveston Village.

The vast majority of the show is filmed on location in the village and around Richmond and its success has not been lost on the City of Richmond which this week congratulated the makers of the ABC production, which is now in its fifth season. “…Once Upon A Time has been a great addition to Richmond. Its filming attracts local fans, as well as those from around the world to Steveston Village, enhancing its reputation as a regional tourist destination,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

“The series has also contributed to a significant increase in filming activity in Richmond, which brings social and economic benefits to the community — creating hundreds of well-paying jobs for our residents and millions in economic outcomes.”

Brodie was interviewed for the show’s first season DVD/BluRay compilation.

A six-minute bonus feature, hosted by the cast, interviews Brodie, Steveston business owners whose storefronts are transformed for the shoots and the crew.

“There’s something about the atmosphere of the village,” said Brodie.

“This was a fishing village first and foremost … and it works, it just all fits together.”

That’s a question that’s gaining traction these days as critics of the

bridge plan, and the subsequent removal of the tunnel, are wondering whether the provincial project has more to do with ships than cars and whether it ignores broader concerns about the environment.

“The provincial motivation for the bridge is clear,” says Doug Massey, whose late father, MLA George Massey, was the driving force behind the tunnel’s construction in 1959.

“Where is the motivation for

It also contends that, because the port is going to benefit if the project goes ahead, then it should “pay for a big portion” of it.

But does that mean dredging?

Not according to port chief financial officer Allan Baydala, who, in an open letter on the port’s website, says that while

the removal of the tunnel may create greater depth at that point in the river, the amount of dredging required on either side could be extensive and potentially cost prohibitive.

The port spends $15 million annually to dredge the river to its current depth of about 11.5 metres, recouping a big chunk of that by selling the sand. In 2014, Fraser Surrey Docks and the Surrey Board of Trade went to Ottawa to pitch for more dredging funds to deepen the river to 13.5 metres.

George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project director Geoff Freer told the Richmond News there’s no plan to dredge the river deeper, noting it would be a huge, costly undertaking because the entire river would need to be dredged. As far as the tunnel being removed to allow bigger ships, Freer notes the tunnel has settled and is under the river floor, so it’s not sticking up and ships wouldn’t be scraping it anyway.

Having a new bridge the same height as the Alex Fraser Bridge will also dictate what can be accommodated ship-wise, says Freer.

A new tunnel would have to be built further upriver or downstream, which would mean the loss of farmland, he added. It would have also required a deeper path under the river to meet seismic standards.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure hasn’t denied the movement of goods by water was taken into consideration when deciding on a crossing, stating in its Project Definition Report that a number of industries — including container import/export, auto import/export and breakbulk exports — use the Fraser River as a marine highway.

Consistent with Port Metro Vancouver’s Land Use Plan, with the tunnel’s removal, more intensive use of sites on the south arm of the Fraser River can be anticipated to support continued growth in Canada’s trade, the Project Definition Report notes.

A summary of the 2012 public consultation process also indicates the port and business community preferred tunnel removal as there were discussions “of river clearances and the importance of the Fraser River for trade and commerce; the capacity and depth of the existing tunnel prevents long-term growth.”

That consultation process, states the province, gave the government a social licence for the bridge, as most respondents preferred the bridge option — one of five presented at public open houses. However, that process has been criticized for not providing details of each option, and none of the options made public included a cost analysis.

Freer now says a new bridge and a new tunnel would have had roughly the same price tag, but a tunnel would have had higher seismic risks and environmental consequences. Keeping it for local traffic or rapid transit use would require significant rehabilitation and ongoing operating costs, and the tunnel would still not meet current seismic standards.

However, the report doesn’t explain how a decommissioned tunnel is a disturbance to the environment.

This week, Metro Vancouver asked the

province for more time to assess the project before giving it its approval (which is not required by the province). The regional government wants to assess how the bridge fits with regional transportation planning, as well as future land use south of the Fraser.

TRAVEL New York The ‘ditch’ that helped open the American west

OME, New York — This is where the conquest of the American West began, where the seeds of its “Manifest Destiny,” to forge a country from the Atlantic to the Pacific, were sown.

And all that’s here to record this pivotal moment in history is a wooden marker alongside the dry bed of a ditch, overgrown with small bushes.

The ditch is no more than six metres wide today and about a metre deep. If it wasn’t for the marker, you’d walk right past without noticing it. But once upon a time — July 4, 1817 to be exact — a shovel went into the ground in this meadow, marking the start of the greatest engineering feat of the day.

Eight years later the Erie Canal, a 580-kilometre waterway — then the longest canal in the world — was completed. It would change the face of America.

That meadow is at the centre of Erie Canal Village, a restored pioneer community composed of buildings moved from other places on the canal and set up like a canal town of the 1840s.

A video in the visitor centre tells how, when the canal opened for business in 1825, people could sail up the Hudson River from New York to just north of Albany, then transfer to mule-towed packet boats or barges and go all the way to Buffalo, on Lake Erie.

The journey from New York to Buffalo, which had taken a month on horseback, could now be done in a week.

By the 1830s, 1,000 immigrants a day were passing through Buffalo, transferring to sailboats to take them through the Great Lakes and into the wilds beyond.

remind visitors that it wasn’t all westbound traffic. With the opening of the canal, grain and other commodities from the Midwest could be shipped through the Great Lakes to Buffalo and on to New York, and thence to Europe. New York became a major port, thanks in large part to the Erie Canal.

side the old canal here recalls that the driving force behind the enterprise was DeWitt Clinton, who made the canal his platform in his run for state governor in 1816. When he won, he set aside $7 million in state funds for the project.

Cynics called it “Clinton’s Folly,” but the canal paid for itself, through tolls, within 10 years.

A stroll through the “village,” past a blacksmith’s shop, a livery stable, a tavern, school and church, gives an idea of the towns that sprang up along the canal in the 1800s.

A huge shed houses sleighs, buggies and carriages. Docents in period dress tell their parts of the story.

The original ditch where the marker stands was in use until the 1830s, when a wider and deeper bypass was constructed — by mostly Irish-immigrant labour, working for 37 cents a day — with muscle power and very little mechanical help.

By the turn of the 20th century, railways had overtaken canal traffic, but the Erie Canal lives on today as a pleasure boating retreat.

he City of Richmond and the Richmond School District are urging everyone who lives, works or plays in the city to don something pink on Wednesday, Feb. 24.

To symbolize their intolerance of bullying, the city and school district are once again partnering to recognize the date as “ERASE Bullying Day” to raise awareness about the issue of bullying.

Unfortunately, bullying is a reality in the lives of many young people, affecting their education, connections and opportunities to have a safe and healthy journey into adulthood.

According to the Vancouver-based McCreary Centre Society 2013 Adolescent Health Survey, youth who were teased, excluded or assaulted in the previous year were more likely to report skipping class in the past month, more likely to have seriously considered suicide and were less likely to report good or excellent mental health.

“Bullying is a troublesome issue, negatively affecting the lives of people of all ages,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

“Here in Richmond we celebrate collaboration and diversity and believe we can erase bullying if we work together.”

Humour amid the wartime ruins RACHELROSENBERG Book Club

L

issa Evans’ Crooked Heart is a startlingly funny odd-couple story set against the backdrop of Second World War London. It follows Noel Bostock, a 10-year-old orphan being raised by his anti-authoritarian suffragette godmother, Mattie.

She isn’t a particularly affectionate woman, but she does adore him and maintains his education from home. As the novel begins, Mattie is suffering from dementia’s rapid disintegration and refuses to acknowledge the steady arrival of war.

Noel is incapable of relating to his peers, having spent most of his life in the company of a bookishly independent woman.

He is a solemn little boy, with a gimpy leg and a tendency toward spending his time alone with books or writing about his peers in a self-made code.

As Mattie’s condition worsens and the war grows closer to home, he is evacuated to a small city north-northwest of London, and is taken in by a poor 36-year-old widow, Vee Sedge.

Vee lives with a silent mother and unappreciative son, both of whom are completely oblivious to how much effort she has put into sustaining them.

She moves from a get-rich-quick scheme to factory work with no real luck, and for her

money has always been elusive and difficult to keep.

Noel invites himself along on one of her crossLondon schemes and Vee realizes how much help the clever, organized young boy can actually be.

But Blitz-era London can be a very dangerous place, and Noel’s imagination and lack of life experience lead him and Vee on a strange and occasionally violent journey.

This book combines a brilliantly dark wit with memorable, endearing characters and by the end I found myself rooting for the two of them despite (or perhaps because of) their various, well-developed flaws.

The burgeoning friendship between Noel and Vee never feels forced or trite, instead Evans allows it to flourish in a way that makes sense for each character.

The humour throughout is steady and constant, never over the top but serving, instead, as a heartbeat that twines itself through the ridiculousness of their circumstances.

The pleasures of this novel sneak up on you, but they linger.

Fraudulent claims take a toll on B.C. drivers

While most B.C. drivers are honest when it comes to making insurance claims, there are a few that are hurting things for the rest of us in the province.

Industry studies estimate that about 10 to 20 per cent of all insurance claims contain an element of fraud or exaggeration. Applying those estimates here means fraud is costing us up to $600 million per year, or more than $100 annually on every auto insurance policy.

Fraud cheats everyone and comes in all shapes and sizes.

Some fraud is organized and orchestrated by a group of individuals, namely, staged accidents and stolen vehicle rings.

Other types of fraud are less obvious. Fraud like this includes exaggerating the extent of an injury, misrepresenting a previous medical condition or slanting the situation when reporting a claim. It s not unheard of for people to embellish

their claim by including vehicle damage unrelated to the crash, or to claim they can t work when they re actually back on the job. These tactics may not make the news, but the costs add up and come out of all of our pockets we all end up paying for those who cheat the system.

ICBC combats fraud with their Special Investigation Unit, which last year looked at more than 5,000 claims Hles. This includes a cyber unit that employs information publicly available on the internet and social media to investigate suspected fraudulent claims. They re in the process of increasing their focus on investigations, including training and analytics technology that Gags patterns and predictors of fraud.

By stepping up efforts to reduce fraudulent and exaggerated claims, along with managing injury claims costs, ICBC is working to take pressure off rising insurance rates.

Globetrotting sisters traverse off-track Richmond siblings saved for a year then set off on an amazing adventure ALANCAMPBELL

wo Richmond sisters are nearing the end of an amazing and weird, year-long adventure around the world’s more obscure and off-the-beaten-track spots.

For 12 months, university grads Erika and Cait Van Vliet saved up every cent they could and packed their bags on May 18 last year. They flew to Indonesia to teach English in universities and, of all places, a local prison.

From there, the pair of McMath secondary alumni, through their traveling blog, has amassed a fascinating array of photos, observations and embarrassing stories.

They’ve walked, biked, bussed and rowed through Southeast Asia, India, Nepal, Central Asia, Europe and the Middle East. They’ve worked at an eco-resort on an isolated Cambodian island; trekked through the Himalayas in Nepal; volunteered at a hospice in India; dived in Sri Lanka; skied in Kyrgyzstan and hitch-hiked through Georgia.

One morning, while snorkelling in the Perhentian Islands near Malaysia, they were circled by a pair of black-tipped reef sharks, but survived to tell the tale (see below).

In just over two months’ time, the Van Vliet sisters will fly to Toronto from Amsterdam and then complete their incredible trip by cycling across the country back to Richmond, so they can see Canada, connect with Canadians and do their bit for the environment by off-setting a year of flying.

The pair has set up a gofundme page in a bid to cover the costs of the final leg.

Before they start heading home, the Richmond News caught up with them, via email, in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, northeast of Afghanistan, and asked them a few questions:

1) Why did you do it?

Cait: We decided to go travelling for such a long period of time mainly to launch ourselves out of our comfort zones. We both had a feeling of complacency with our lives back home.

We needed change in every aspect. We also knew that there is only a small window of time in which we would both be free to take 13 months off from “real life” to explore. We wanted to come home with a greater appreciation for Canada.

2) How did you fund your trip?

Erika: We funded such a big trip by working our butts off and saving every penny for a full year. We both moved back home (thanks, Mom!). We cut back on eating out, going to movies, getting nails done, etc. We also pretty much stopped shopping for anything that wasn’t trip-related — that was a tough one! Basically, instead of going out and spending money, we stayed in and did research. We researched safe travel routes, insurance plans, required banking adjustments, equipment to buy, etc. It wasn’t a very exciting year, but it was effective.

In the Perhentians, near Malaysia: ...we headed to a nearby beach for an early morning snorkel. As we approached, we saw 5 or 6 fins circling in the shallows. We entered the water very slowly. I swear, my heart palpitations sounded exactly like the Jaws’ theme song. We found a nice grouping of rocks to spy from. These were blacktipped reef sharks, the longest about 5 feet...(still enough to scare the s*** out of us)...we were the only people on the beach, it felt very intimate. Later that day, I went snorkelling while Cait (swam)...beside me. We made it quite far out when I looked down to see 2 largish sharks looping around us. Not wanting to...tell Cait and freak her out, I kept trying to edge her back...(to the) shore...It wasn’t until we were safely back on the beach I told her.

3) What have you learned about the world?

Cait: This is a really big question and one that we talk about all the time. Of course, we’ve made observations about our destinations, but, as a subject matter, I think we’ve come to learn far more about ourselves in the world: - You can adapt to almost anything; - As Canadians, we are extremely lucky; - A good sense of humour is essential to travel. You WILL look like an idiot. But that’s okay!

4) What would you do differently if you had the chance?

Erika: Generally, we have been really pleased with how everything has turned out — knock on wood for the last three months! We often say that there is nothing we would do differently. However, this doesn’t mean there weren’t learning curves. We needed to find a good balance between flexibility with our plans and a constructive schedule. It took a while to get this down. We have some regrets over how we did Myanmar (10 days of flying by the seat of our pants) because we had not yet found our balance.

5) Where are you going between now and Toronto?

Cait: In the time that we have left before we start our bike trip from Toronto, we will be flying into Istanbul and purchasing our touring bikes. We will tour around Turkey and ride through Bulgaria to Romania. Here we will do a 10-day bike

trip through the countryside of Transylvania. We will ship our bikes home from Bucharest and then fly down to Italy where we will take a rest in our friend’s apartment at the foot of the Dolomites. We then head to Marrakesh, Morocco, to meet one of our closest childhood friends.

We will spend a month with her in Morocco where we want to do a camel tour into the Sahara and trek the Atlas Mountain range. Lastly, we fly to Amsterdam for one week to catch up with some friends we’ve met on the trip before we fly to Toronto on May 5.

6) Why do you need sponsorship for the final leg?

Erika: We require sponsorship and/or public support mainly because the equipment needs to meet a certain safety standard. So far, we’ve been able to make do: thrift store supplies and DIY solutions. But the bicycles, helmets, side panniers and repair kit need to be durable and reliable for roughly 4,400 km of Canadian terrain. It is for this reason that we have tried our hand at a crowd-funding campaign. We are asking for support in any form. Maxima sedan captures the soul of a sports car

The first thing everybody notices about the new Maxima is its looks. It must be said that not everybody may fall in love with its new styling, but it is truly distinctive and already, many other car companies are following this new design trend called the “floating roof” (for example, the new Lexus RX).

Dominating the front end is Nissan’s new V-Motion grille. This certainly creates a dramatic image and makes the Maxima instantly recognizable.

The sides of the Maxima also have an interesting flair.

The roof borrows the Murano’s floating roof treatment by blacking out the pillars.

Intersecting character lines are sculpted into the body to further enhance the look.

At the rear, distinctive taillights draw attention, as do the standard dual chrome exhausts. The chrome lip

The 2016 Maxima is only available with one engine; Nissan heavily revised its VQ-series motor to make it more powerful and efficient.

Applying what it learned while remaking the iconic Nissan GT-R, 60 per cent of the parts in the 3.5-litre V6 in the Maxima are new. As a result, horsepower is up to 300 and torque is rated at 261 lb-ft.

Nissan’s engineering efforts also paid off in terms of efficiency, too. The new Maxima returns a 15 per cent increase in highway fuel economy.

Complementing the powerplant is a new continuously variable automatic transmission. This newly designed CVT is quieter thanks to Nissan’s D-Step shifting logic which mimics traditional shifts. A wider gear ratio range allows for stronger acceleration.

While enthusiasts may say a sports car should not be front-wheel drive, Nissan optimized the Maxima’s platform to enhance handling and ride comfort.

Off the line, the Maxima doesn’t suffer from torque steer, which plagues most FWD cars with this much

While Nissan put a lot of effort into marketing the Maxima as a sports sedan, the cabin is very upscale and classy.

The Maxima brings with it a luxurious air, especially in upper-level trims. The stitched and soft-touch dash and doors impart a premium feel, complimented by fantastic diamond-pattern seats.

Also, front passengers will have no trouble getting comfortable in those greatlooking seats. Nissan’s Zero Gravity seats are well bolstered and both come standard as power-adjustable.

Rear seat passengers should also enjoy their time in the Maxima. It boasts near full-size car leg and headroom, so only the tallest passengers will have any complaints.

Central to the Maxima’s cockpit is an eight-inch colour display, which sits inside the centre stack that is angled seven degrees toward the driver and the console itself sits higher than in previous generations.

To further strengthen this Maxima’s claim as a fourdoor sports car, this generation is longer, lower, light and tighter than the previous.

To be specific, this eighth generation is 2.2 inches longer, 1.3 inches lower, 82 lbs lighter and has 25 per cent more torsional rigidity.

When crafting the new Maxima’s interior, Nissan designers visited the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels for inspiration. The resulting cabin is very driver-centric and is actually a hair smaller than the Altima’s — however it is far more luxurious and futuristic.

power. Through corners, it remains flat and feels light and nimble.

If you want the most dynamic Maxima, look at the SR model. This version comes with uniquely tuned dampers, a larger front stabilizer bar, sport-tuned suspension, and a dynamic control module.

For the first time, the Maxima has selectable driving modes — switching between Normal and Sport modes adjusts throttle response, transmission tuning, steering feel and Active Sound Enhancement.

Overall, the Maxima is smooth and quiet on the highway, but firm enough if you want an occasional spirited drive. However, I don’t believe that you can call this car a truly sports sedan due to its overall soft feel and somewhat numb steering.

It’s an improvement nevertheless, but Honda’s Accord actually feels a bit tighter when it comes to steering characteristic.

arah Friedman is heading to next week’s B.C. Winter Games in Penticton to play a sport she never would have imagined a couple of years earlier.

As an able-bodied athlete, the Grade 9 Hugh Boyd student is a member of the Zone 5 wheelchair basketball team.

Friedman was at home recovering from a foot injury that was preventing her from playing her regular sports.

She had earlier got a taste of wheelchair basketball as part of a demonstration at the Langley Events Centre when she was playing in the Steve Nash Youth Basketball League.

“She loved able-bodied basketball but the injuries were keeping her from playing,” explained her mom, Stacey Friedman. “One day she was just sitting there doing nothing when I called B.C. Wheelchair Basketball. I was surprised to learn they encourage ablebodied people to play.

“I figured it would just be for the six week period she was wearing an air cast but there was no turning back.”

Friedman made a quick impression for the club team she joined in Richmond, so much so that she was encouraged to go play at a more competitive level. Now, she trains on a regular basis with a team out of Fort Langley that one day could form the B.C. roster at the next Canada Winter Games in Red Deer three years from now. She also works out with a club team based at Douglas College in New West.

Friedman is back playing club soccer but wheelchair basketball remains a big part of her life.

“My mom didn’t want me sitting on my butt all day doing nothing and I was dealing with all these injuries,” laughed Sarah. “When we did the demo at the Steve Nash Tournament a few years back, I was the only one to make a basket but it took forever!

“It took me basically half a year before I started making shots. I was getting a lot of fouls too.”

Although able-bodied athletes are permitted to play wheelchair basketball, their participation is limited due to a point classification system — ranging from 5.0 (a male able-bodied athlete) down to 1.0 for those with less functional skills. The point total can’t exceed 14 for the five players on the floor.

“There are usually no more than two able-bodied players per team,” continued Stacey Friedman. “They are also the team mules. They usually are asked to carry all the gear and unload all the chairs.”

perhaps long enough to play for B.C. at the Canada Games.

“What I like about it is there are no favourites compared to other sports I have played,” said Sarah.

“There’s lots of contact too and people are always getting knocked to the floor (while belted to the chair). I’m still trying to learn how to get up on my own.”

Unlike so many sports, height and weight aren’t much of a factor either.

“Once you get your bum in the chair, everyone is equal,” added Stacey.

“She plays with a lot of guys and they underestimate her.”

Richmond Minor Hockey Association alumni took time out from his busy schedule last week to give back to aspiring officials in his hometown.

NHL referee Trevor Hanson co-hosted a skill development session for young referees at the Richmond Ice Centre. The event was part of the association’s 50th anniversary celebration and its ongoing commitment for referee development. Richmond Minor extended the invitation to include officials from Richmond Ravens and Seafair Minor as well.

Hanson was in town to officiate the Canucks/Maple Leafs game the following night at Rogers Arena.

He made his NHL debut in the fall of 2013 in Dallas.

He came through Richmond Minor Hockey as a player and worked his first

game as an official in 1997.

His playing career included a stint with the B.C. Hockey League’s Surrey Eagles.

Hanson eventually turned his attention full-time to officiating and received his Hockey Canada Level Six certification in 2009, allowing him to work a number of high-profile international events.

Helping him host the 75-minute session was Dan Clarke, another RMHA alumni who often worked games with Hanson.

Following the clinic, the participants received prizes and were treated to Pizza, donated by Fresh Slice Seafair.

Hanson’s NHL referee jersey will soon be on display in the Richmond Ice Centre lobby, alongside another Richmond native and accomplished NHL referee Kelly Sutherland.

Richmond Curling Club juniors off to B.C. Winter Games A

young up-and-coming rink from the Richmond Curling Club is looking forward to the opportunity of competing against other top juvenile teams from around the province at the B.C. Winter Games in Penticton.

Led by skip Gabriel Kwok, the RCC team earned a trip to the Okanagan by winning last month’s Zone 5 Playdowns in Squamish, defeating a rink from the Howe Sound Curling Club.

Kwok is joined by two other Richmond curlers — third Johnson Tao and second Brandon Tong. Rounding out the foursome is lead Jay Hou from Delta.

Kwok is a Grade 9 student in the Incentive Program at Hugh Boyd, while Tong is enrolled in the Explorations Program at McMath. Tao is in his Grade 8 year at Burnett and Hou is a Grade 9 student at the Regent Christian Academy. The boys are coached by Tammy

All of the team members are passionate about curling, and excited to compete at the provincial level for the first time.

They have been curling for four to six years, and started to get more serious about competing last year when they came in second in the regional playdowns, with a slightly different line-up. This season, they have stepped up their attendance at curling camps, bonspiels, the Optimist Junior Interclub Curling League and practices to prepare for competition.

The boys are also active volunteering in the community and at their club, including last year’s B.C. Wheelchair Curling Championships.

The Richmond rink will be up against six other Zone champions at the B.C. Winter Games which run from Feb. 25-28.

Breakthrough for Panther Cheer

I

t proved to be a breakthrough weekend for Panther Cheer at the recent Cheerfest Championships in Abbotsford.

For the first time ever, the club’s Adult (17 and over) International Open Level 6 team has qualified for the USASF Cheerleading World Championships. This event takes place every two years at Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

The Abbotsford competition was one of just two in B.C. that is sanctioned by the USASF in order to qualify for the Worlds.

There were three spots in Orlando on the line and Panther Cheer finished second.

They were the only team to successfully execute two clean routines with zero reductions.

The Panther Cheer team features young women ranging from 17 to 28 years of age.

“We are so very excited to have this group represent Panther Cheer as our first team at Worlds, a tradition we hope to make an annual one moving forward!” said coach

Stephanie Kennedy. “What makes this even more special is that out of this team of 13 athletes, seven of them are staff members who coach our younger athletes in the gym.”

“They are all tremendous role models who have demonstrated how hard work, tenacity, team work and a belief in themselves can take them to the very top in the sport of all star cheerleading! So many of the athletes and their parents were right there, at the front of the floor to cheer them on and witness the awards ceremony and all the tears of joy that were shed.”

It was part of a very successful weekend in Abbotsford with all Panther Cheer entries finishing in the top three of their categories.

The results included the Youth Level 1 and 2 teams winning their respective divisions.

The Junior Level 3 team did the same and also won the coveted Grand Champions Award for the top score among all Level 3 teams.

FAIRBROTHER, David Herbert David Herbert Fairbrother passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord on February 14, 2016 in Vernon, B.C. at the age of 71, surrounded by his family.

Deeply bereaved by his passing are his loving wife of 46 years, Virginia (Braun); his children Teresa Balogh (Jonathon), Steven Fairbrother (Marcie), and Jennifer Redekop (Dave) and his six beloved grandchildren Emily, Jaden, Elizabeth, Naomi, Ella and Presley.

He will also be sadly missed by his siblings, John (Bonnie), Mary (Jerry) and Peter (Evie), as well as extended family, friends, colleagues and members of church congregations throughout B.C. David was born in Brighton, England on November 18, 1944, the son of the late Herbert and Amelia Fairbrother. He immigrated to Canada when he was 18 months old and grew up on a farm in Haney, B.C. At age 15, he was called by the Lord to be a pastor. After high school, he attended Northwest Baptist Theological College, where he graduated in 1967, followed by a year of studies at the University of Manchester in England. David and Virginia were married in 1969. He was ordained as a minister in 1971.

For 38 years, David, supported by Virginia, faithfully served God as a pastor at churches in Prince George, Richmond, and Vernon. Within his years of ministry, he served two terms as President of the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches in B.C. and Yukon, raised funds for the building of Northwest College in Langley, led two church building projects, mentored young pastors and went on mission trips with Virginia to Japan, Russia and Hungary.

In addition to his church-related ministry, David had a heart for the community and spent many years involved in the Vernon Rotary Club and enjoyed hosting international students.

David’s greatest joy in life was being with his family. His wife and children have many happy memories of time spent together watching BC Lions and Canucks games, vacations in Penticton, picnics at the beach, family fun nights and visiting Birch Bay. He took great joy in spending time with his grandchildren, doing special projects, going on trips and encouraging them in all they did.

He loved tending to his lawn and flowers, working on home projects, collecting coins, playing golf and traveling, especially to Hawaii.

David suffered from an autoimmune disease and in 2007 he was given the gift of life when he received two liver transplants, enduring four 6-hour surgeries in 49 days. His ability to rise above the extreme adversity he faced during his transplant journey led the transplant doctors to name him Miracle Man. David and his family were so thankful to the donor families and to God for giving him an extra 8-1/2 years of life, which allowed him to see his oldest grandchild graduate, to be there for the birth of his youngest grandchild and to be part of many family events.

David was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer 2-1/2 years ago and despite being given a short timeline of survival, he persevered and lived life to the fullest. There were many moments during David’s medical journeys where obstacles were placed in his way, with treatments that did not work and side effects that challenged his energy and abilities, but from each hurdle David was able to rally his spirit and surround himself with his faith and family and move forward to embrace the precious life God bestowed upon him. David rose to every hardship with grace, determination and humility and was an inspiration to all those around him.

God sustained David for the past two years with no cancer treatment, during which time he made trips with Virginia to the Maritimes, Toronto and Niagara Falls, raised money for Sunnybrae Bible Camp, served as a Church Elder in Armstrong and renovated the entire main floor of their house including laying tile and hardwood floors, painting and reupholstering furniture.

Thank you to the doctors and nurses who cared for David through his many medical journeys, most especially the liver transplant team at VGH. Above all, we thank God for His sustaining love and for the wonderful gift of David’s life.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, February 26, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 3412 - 15th Avenue, Vernon, B.C.
