Really?

T

his Sunday, we’re told by the commercial world, is a day when we’re supposed to lavish our significant other — or someone we’re trying to convince to be that person — with gold, frankincense and mir.

No. Wait. Sorry. That’s the other annual ripoff, loosely connected to the birth of Jesus, but now reduced to a spending frenzy for gifts we don’t need. Really, we don’t.

But with every passing year, Christmas and Valentine’s Day grow closer together, both in form and in the shrinkage of time between the last roll of discounted Christmas wrapping paper leaving the store shelf and the heartshaped candies appearing in its place.

According to figures released this week, Canadians, on average, will spend $170 on their spouse, partner or the aforementioned unsuspecting love interest — perhaps your colleague or someone you vaguely know on Facebook, but have always “admired.”

Apparently, we’re supposed to wine and dine that person, buy them a card with a slushy message inside, chocolates, flowers and maybe a heart-shaped balloon from the dollar store, if you’re feeling especially generous. I even had the misfortune to see a recent TV commercial suggesting that a car would be a great little pressie on Feb. 14.

Really? You need to buy all these things for said person on a certain day of the year just to express your feelings for them?

If I don’t splurge on the cards with “undying love,” “you’re my soul-mate” sentiments inside, on the box of candy with the pink ribbons or on the dozen red roses, am I an unfeeling, uncaring, cold-hearted husband?

I certainly don’t need Milestones restaurant to tell me that Wednesday is date night, and I don’t need Hallmark, Wal-Mart, Save-On, Purdy’s et al telling me when to let my wife know she’s appreciated and, dare I say, loved.

If she reads this, I’m sure she will be asking me for the dates on which such sentiments were actually expressed, but that’s another column altogether.

The fact is, every day is Valentine’s Day in my home. Without being asked or hinted to, breakfast in bed is served most weekends and holidays, special meals are concocted, if I see clothes in stores that my wife might like, I’ll buy them or take a picture to see if she wants me to pick it up for her next time.

I’m not, for a second, nominating myself for husband of the year, but the list does go on and on and on, ahem.

Suffice to say, there are 364 — or 365 on a leap year such as this one — other days of the year that we can, of our own accord, do at least one of things expected of us on Feb. 14.

Surely they must count for something.

Wow! Mr. Peschisolido, you were much too humble to say you couldn’t do anything except stating one of Canada’s official languages is English. As an M.P., you could do much more than this at the federal level. You could also pressure the provincial and municipal governments to make changes.

Don’t tell me you can’t because the Chinese community would be angry. I am not, for one.

Don’t tell me you can’t because the developers would be angry; the real estate would plummet; there wouldn’t be enough jobs for newly graduated apprentices or anything else.

We pay you to think not recite facts. If one

day I walked down the street and someone threw an egg at me and told me to “go home!,” I would demand an apology from the Canadian government because the increased hostility towards many of us is the direct result of all three levels of government ignoring Canadian’s concerns and letting the real estate market run wild for all these years.

Starting today, I will not recycle anymore, take out my Green Can or obey water restriction, because I don’t do those things to make room at the land fill for the construction debris of 10-year-old homes, and I don’t conserve water so our government can sell our precious ground water cheap to Nestle.

Dear Editor, Every time I cross the Oak Street Bridge heading south into Richmond, I can’t help but notice the loads of litter strewn on both sides of Highway 99. What is wrong with people?!!

All this garbage just doesn’t appear there on its own, nor will it disappear on its own! Why do people no longer seem to care about their city? Who throws out milk jugs, plastic bags with garbage, and many other things!! Who is going to clean up the mess?

If you see someone toss out litter, take down their licence number and let the police know.

It’s time these litter bugs learn that it’s not okay to just dump their garbage out vehicle windows.

Will all this litter be cleaned up? Perhaps if we catch the culprits and make them clean it up, just maybe, they’ll get the message that not everyone enjoys seeing their litter along the side of the road.

I hope you publish my concerns in your newspaper. I can only wait and see if it will do some good.

Quaint shops getting more rare Dear Editor, Re; “Don’t let heritage get in the way of healthy profit,” Letters, Feb. 10 My family and I lived in the Dunbar area during our first few years in Canada.

Those were the times, as Mr. Arnold aptly described, when the street was lined with independent mom and pop stores, coffee shops, breakfast nooks and restaurants. I used to frequent a used bookstore which has now moved to Main Street because the area has been taken over by the construction of an apartment storefront building.

Gone are most of the old shops. There was a Chinese restaurant at the northern end of Dunbar that, for me, had the best crispy chicken in town.

A few of the shops are still around, but

judging by the way things are going, it won’t be long before they, too, become things of the past. I still go to the same family doctor in Dunbar and I pray that the clinic where he works will not be sold to a developer.

Here in Steveston, I fear the shops in the building that belongs to the owner of the hardware store will soon be gone, too. And we may soon be missing Crafts and More and other shops we have become accustomed to and are part of the Moncton Street scene. If that happens, Steveston will lose its quaintness and uniqueness.

Perhaps, people will still come to buy fish and shrimps and to get their nails and hair done.

The Family Law Act or the Will?

Reasons for judgment were released last month in the case Re Leniuk Estate. The deceased left a Will in which two Executors were appointed. Part of the Estate was bequeathed to the deceased’s grandchildren, one of whom was still under age 19. The Executors wanted the grandchild’s guardian to hold the portion allocated to that grandchild (about $15,000) to hasten the full resolution of the Estate.

They applied to the Court for directions, referring to Part 8 of the Family Law Act. That part of the Act allows a Court to appoint a Trustee for property to which a minor is entitled. The Court held, in a careful analysis, that Part 8 of the Act does not override a Will. The Court added that Part 8 applies where a minor is entitled to property but no Trustee exists. An application may be then made for a Court Order appointing a Trustee.

However, where a Will exists, it governs. The Will appoints a Trustee, so no Court application is needed.

This provision of the Act had never been before the Court in an application such as this. It was properly made. But what this case may also show, I suggest, is that some more careful planning by the Will Maker may have helped.

The grandchild’s portion was relatively small, and it was sensible that the Executors would not want to incur extra expenses from keeping the Estate active until the child reached adult status. However, the Will overrides Part 8 of the Act and so, despite the small portion being held, the Trustees would have to act after all.

Hands-off housing policy leaves Millennials empty handed Open letter to Christy Clark, As a young Canadian, born and raised in Richmond, I have a lot to be grateful for; I live in a safe and beautiful city, I was provided with a quality public education, and I am part of a culturally and ethnically diverse society that is a model for the world.

Yes, there is room for growth — ways we can improve our education system, make our communities safer, and promote greater tolerance. But, relative to so many other places, we have little to complain about.

Yet, when it comes to our province’s increasingly unaffordable housing market, I speak for many British Columbians when I say that we are frustrated.

Frustrated that a middle-class income can no longer afford you a family home in Richmond or Vancouver. Disheartened that young families are priced out of the market or weighed down by household debt.

Despite public pressure to address rising prices, you have cautioned against reducing the value of people’s homes.

As you suggest, “driving down the cost of housing by just 10 per cent would mean a family with a home currently worth $800,000, could lose $80,000.”

But, if that same $800,000 home were to rise an additional 10 per cent over the

coming year (increasing to $880,000), would the province then be concerned if this new 10 per cent growth in equity were lost?

In the last year alone, the average Richmond homeowner has seen their equity rise over 20 per cent. A recent survey showed that members of your own cabinet saw their personal home equity rise by an average of $103,000 in 2015.

What seems to have fallen by the wayside is consideration of the economic burden placed on young Canadians, who continue to see their homeownership dreams slip away and rental prices increase as the interests of BC Millennials have been displaced by the interests of homeowners and developers.

Most young people, like myself, understand that we live in a world-class city that is constrained by geography, and will continue to densify. We understand that we probably will not live in a home with the same square footage as our parents. But, we do expect to be able to afford to live in the city we grew up in; to be able to raise two kids in a 3-bedroom, 1,400-square foot townhouse, within 25 kilometres of our workplace.

This, however, is no longer obtainable for most young Canadians living on a middle-class salary.

Many are also recognizing that an overheated housing market is impacting the cultural and societal fabric of our city.

Empty homes and units are hollowing out parts of our communities, making them less vibrant, and engaged. We are slowly pushing children out of cities because of unaffordability. Most young parents now spend over 40 per cent of their earnings on housing, leaving them with less income to provide for their kids.

The B.C. government’s hands-off approach to rising prices has led me, and many others, to question your party’s commitment to the ‘families first’ platform that got you elected in 2013.

Under your leadership, however, the BC government has the opportunity to take strong action to make homeownership more affordable. To move beyond first-time homebuyer incentives which do little to cool real estate prices, and only support those who can already afford.

Housing affordability is not only an issue within the provincial government’s purview, but one that you as a politician can hang your hat on, and leave as an important part of your legacy as premier.

City ought to follow in Great Bear tracks Dear Editor, Re: “Stumped,” News, Jan. 29 Applause for the Great Bear Rainforest conservation agreement reached last week which ensures protection for our BC forests. Envioronmental groups have helped achieve this important step for the province. Where are our city’s environmentalists?

Our mature trees in Richmond are a vital part of our environment as well. Do they not need protection? While everyone agrees to ‘save the environment,’ the cutting still continues, developers continue to profit, and city hall turns a blind eye.

Without the mature evergreen conifer trees holding the soil in place, heavy rains will flush the soil into the sea, the seas will rise, flooding the remaining land; pollution will increase, and the long, searing summer droughts will continue. In 50 years time Lulu Island will be a flat, windy, inhospitable desert, covered in empty hi-rise condominiums and monster homes where no one wants to live. It will become the ‘Doha’ (the capital city of Qatar) of the Lower Mainland. It is not too late to change that, but close....

Richmond native and two-time Grey Cup champion footballer Shea Emry explained why he thinks it’s so difficult for men to admit they’re wrestling with mental health issues, let alone do something about it.

If anyone has the right to opine on the subject, however, it’s CFL middle linebacker Emry, who last week announced his retirement from the game after a career packed full of potentially life-altering concussions while starring for the Montreal Allouettes and, laterally, the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Throughout his career, Emry, 29, who grew up near No. 2 and Woodwards roads, didn’t just battle demons on the field, where he was once voted by his peers as the “CFL’s Nastiest Player,” due, in the most part, to his relentless style of defence.

He also sheltered secret enemies in his mind; many of

found himself being drawn deeper into self-induced isolation and further than he’d ever been before into the depressive state he had known as an adolescent when he experienced extreme bullying.

But rather than roll over, early in 2012, Emry began doing what so many men in a similar situation find the toughest thing to do — tell other people what was on his mind.

He began sharing his story publicly and also started throwing himself into personal betterment and designed his own rehabilitation program, which included, of all things for a hardened profootballer, yoga, nature immersion, mindfulness and talk therapy.

“But I thought, by telling my story, I would find that there was a lot of other men in the same situation as me.

“So I threw myself into all these activities; it allowed a balance to be struck between the voices in my head and feeling good about myself.”

new ‘safety record’—of sorts—was set in 2015. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently reported that the almost 900 separate recalls affecting over 51 million vehicles last year beat the 2014 record of 803 separate recalls.

One reason for the increase: the millions of dollars in fines levied against Fiat Chrysler, General Motors and Takata Corp., the airbag manufacturer, for their tardiness in reporting safety problems seems to have motivated them to act faster, even where smaller numbers of vehicles are affected.

Another reason offered by NHTSA administrator Mark Rosekind is the re-doubling of efforts on the part of the NHTSA to spot defects faster. “But,” he says, “identifying defects is not enough; we have to make sure they get fixed.”

Takata airbag inflators have played a big role in this record-breaking year. The inflators are metal cartridges loaded with propellant wafers. Exposure to moisture over time seems to be the cause of their otherwise unprompted explosion propelling shrapnel into the vehicle interior.

At least 11 people reportedly have died worldwide from the problem, and 139 have been injured. In the US, about 23 million Takata inflators have been recalled on 19 million vehicles sold by 12 auto and truck makers. Government forecasts of more Takata recalls were promptly confirmed in late January when Ford announced expansion of its ‘Takata’ recall after an inflator exploded in a Ford Ranger in December 2015

killing the driver. Ford’s January 26th recall includes 391,354 Ford Rangers, model years 2004 to 06 — 361,692 of which are in the US, and 29,334 in Canada.

Hard on the heels of the Takata problem, Continental Automotive Systems, in documents filed with the US government has reported that moisture inside its airbag control computers may corrode the power supply resulting in the airbags failing to inflate in a crash or deploying without a crash. Continental says the problem first surfaced in January 2008 when it analyzed a malfunctioning control unit that was removed from a Mercedes. Investigations continued as incidents occurred in subsequent years.

Documents, posted February 4, 2016 on the NHTSA website say that the Continental recall will extend to cars dating as far back as 2006. Honda, Fiat, Volkswagen, and Mercedes have already issued these recalls; some unidentified Mazda and Volvo Truck vehicles are also included. Continental says this recall will extend to up to five million vehicles worldwide, less than two million of which are in the US. It is reported that on average, within 18 months of a recall, 25 per cent of the vehicles covered remain unrepaired. In late January, the NHTSA launched a new public awareness campaign called Safe Cars Save Lives that “urges consumers to check for open recalls at least twice a year and to get their vehicles fixed as soon as parts are available.”

Automakers are currently required to notify owners by first class mail. More ‘modern’ methods of owner notification —text messaging, email, social media are all being developed by the NHTSA as better ways of contacting owners and motivating them to respond.

And in 2014, the majority of his offthe-field energy was placed into a new business venture, a men’s adventure club called “Wellmen,” where he would share his mental wellness regime with other men who, like Emry of old, found themselves at a loss of how to deal with the struggles of expressing their emotions, without feeling like they are surrendering their masculinity.

“It’s most likely pride or ego that stops men (from coming forward); they don’t want to admit there’s any problem,” said Emry.

“It does make it harder. But it’s changing and it’s becoming more palatable for men to reach out and have that conversation.

“Wellmen provides opportunities for guys to step out of their comfort zones and experience something vastly different. It shows them there are many others out there just like them.

“I would urge them to take the risk, you will gain strength from taking a risk on something you don’t really know.

“This (project) is about modern day skills for men, helping them to navigate through life and learning how to adapt.

It’s about having conversations and taking part in activities.”

As well as the aforementioned yoga and mindfulness, those activities include axe-throwing, fire-building and logger sports.

“It’s very much for males aged 18 to

55; it’s about the male experience and it’s not tailored solely for athletes,” said Emry, who took part in his first logger competition last week.

“It’s about trying to engage your masculine being, while at the same time providing an experience that, as a human being, you can still express yourself and your emotions.”

ow living in Dunbar, Emry — nominated late in his career as the CFL’s “Most Outstanding Canadian,” “Most Outstanding Defensive Player” and awarded the Jake Gaudaur Veterans’ Trophy for advocacy and leadership — said he still has lots of friends in Richmond and visits Steveston “at least once a month.”

Now that he’s given up football, however, Vancouver College-grad Emry is devoting his full attention to the Wellmen venture, aside, of course, from spending more time with his 16-month-old son, Rozen Oak Emry, and his fellow Richmondite partner, Devon Brooks, who’s expecting their second child soon.

“I want to awaken a new generation of men that are a brotherhood of adventurous and empowered individuals, confident about who they are,” said Emry of what he wants to achieve in his new lease on life.

“But it can also be about just going outside and getting on the bike and getting lost in that adventure experience.

“It can be about speaking at close quarters and listening to each others’ stories.”

A

driver using a remote section of Westminster Highway in east Richmond appears to have taken exception to one of the new, centre-of-theroad warning signs.

Bolted down in the middle of the street, east of No. 9 Road and west of Graybar Road, the “30 km on school days” sign sits directly outside the Choice School for the Gifted.

The sign — the first of which was tested near a central Richmond school two years ago and is

designed to flex if hit by a vehicle — appears to have been deliberately sheered off just above its bolted-down base.

According to Richmond RCMP, the sign was last seen intact on Jan. 26, after only being installed early in December last year.

“It looks as if someone has mechanically sheered off the sign,” said Cpl. Dennis Hwang, Richmond RCMP spokesperson.

“If it had been damaged by accident, or even deliberately, there would most likely be signs of that, such as debris. But there was nothing like that. Our speculation is that some people maybe don’t appreciate the sign.”

Street racers caught by cops

T

wo Richmond drivers have been ticketed and banned from the road after street-racing along one of the city’s main roads.

The drivers, a 31-year-old and a 20-year-old with a novice license, were caught by police around 10 p.m. on Tuesday racing their powerful 2011 BMW M3 and 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX vehicles westbound along Bridgeport Road, near the Highway 99 off-ramp.

A Richmond Mountie was on patrol when he spotted the vehicles racing along the street. Both vehicles were quickly stopped near Gage and

Bridgeport roads, via a coordinated effort from fellow officers.

The drivers were each issued violation ticket for driving without due care and attention and issued an immediate 15-day driving prohibition pending further review. Both vehicles were towed and impounded for seven days.

“Richmond RCMP has zero tolerance for street racing and this has stemmed from the early 2000s when street racing incidents rose throughout the province,” said Cpl. Dennis Hwang, of Richmond RCMP.

Described as a “husky eight pound, seven ounce infant” at the time, he was the first baby born at Richmond’s new hospital.

“I was the first patient, the first mother at the hospital,” said Nelly, 82, in an interview.

“It was a beautiful hospital. Everything was very nice and clean.”

Local merchants showered the family with gifts — including diaper service — valued at $300, according to a report at the time.

For Bob, now a heavy-duty mechanic who lives in Surrey, the “husky” description didn’t stick.

“I was always a scrawny kid. I’m probably the smallest of all my brothers,” he said.

The facility officially opened as Richmond General Hospital on Feb. 27, 1966 with 132 beds and room for 29 newborns. Doctors began admitting patients within weeks.

At the opening ceremony, the program — a copy is kept by the City of Richmond Archives — called the $3.5-million hospital “a monument and an indication of the wishes of the people of Richmond to render to their fellowmen the best possible service during times of need.”

So monumental was the hospital that The Richmond Review published its first ever colour photo ahead of opening day. The image featured “beautiful” nurse Lynne Jonasson posing with flowers in front of the new building.

Coverage of opening day led with the headline, “Thousands brave icy winds to tour new hospital.” In his speech, Mayor Henry Anderson followed the theme of the ceremony program.

“This building represents much more than concrete and steel, and will stand as a perpetual monument to man’s humanity to man,” Anderson was quoted as saying.

Canada’s then health minister Eric Martin told the crowd that Richmond now boasted the most modern hospital in North America.

Wosk also reminisced about the annual Iconic Red Wine Tasting. Both Wosk and his beloved mentor, the late John Levine, came up with the idea that saw customers blind taste and rate over a dozen premium reds that can age gracefully in one’s cellar.

As Wosk explained, “An iconic wine is over $50 U.S. and has been top-rated 90 points or more for ten consecutive years. The industry in B.C. isn’t old enough to have iconic wines. We wanted to see which wines may become iconic.”

Wosk cited an example of a B.C. “iconic red” available at Sip Wines.

“Church and State Quintessential ($58.99). It’s a traditional Bordeaux-style blend. Usually merlot dominant, with cab sauv, cab franc, Malbec and some petit verdot. This is what B.C. tends to do very well. Blending gives the winemaker more creativity than a single varietal,” he said.

Another highlight for Wosk was his very knowledgeable staff. “I’ve been really lucky. This store has attracted staff who are passionate about wine — as passionate as I am or even more so.”

“Eric Urquhart has been with me since the day opened.

And Harold Rose came along about five or six years later.

They both have a wealth of experience and knowledge and want to learn more.”

So, when is Wosk locking Sip Wines for the final time?

“Our last day will be Saturday, March 5. Church and State stood out as being our number one seller and supporter.

Kim and Lyndell Pullen, the owners of Church and State, have agreed to come and do a tasting from 3 to 6 p.m. in our store. We’re going to do a Bon Voyage Party!” declared Wosk.

Despite selling his VQA license, Wosk is optimistic about the future for the wine consumer. “My crystal ball is that the wine consumer will be better off. I know that the Save-On grocery stores that have opened B.C. VQA wine aisles are doing very well. And they also hired the staff that operated at local VQA stores.

“I’m hoping some of the private liquor stores pick up the ball and expand their VQA inventory. This is an opportunity for them to attract our customers.

“But whether the B.C. wineries will be better off remains to be seen.”

Wosk’s plans for the future after closing?

“I’m open for offers,” he chuckled.

elving into the world of online dating is not an easy task for many people.

Projecting the right image — one you are comfortable with — for all the world to see is a main concern. And it’s one that is magnified for some people with a disability who can struggle in daily life trying to get others to see past their physical circumstances.

That’s why the husband and wife team of Arley McNeney and Chris Cruthers have been invited to present a workshop on Feb. 23 at Richmond Centre for Disability on the subject of online dating and the unique challenges disabled people can encounter.

“We, as a hobby for a long time, made over our friends’ online dating profiles,” said McNeney, a paralympian in wheelchair basketball and a communications instructor in the school of business at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Richmond. “So, we started a little side business called Sidekick Dating, where we re-do those profiles. Chris does the photos and I re-write the profiles.”

One of the foremost challenges for online daters with a disability is knowing the right time to reveal the fact they have a disability.

It’s often a fine line that can have undesired consequences.

“I think, especially women with disabilities often get approached online by people with disability fetishes — people who are not going to be giving them the attention they want,”

McNeney said.

That can often result in the online applicant not divulging their disability until they get to know the other person better.

“But that can also cause unpleasantness, as well,” McNeney said. “You don’t want to wait too long and show up to the first date in a wheelchair when you haven’t told the other person that you have a disability.”

Depending on the individual case, revealing a disability can be done after a few email messages have been exchanged and a better understanding and sense of trust has been developed.

“That gives you one level or so of protection,” McNeney said.

While there are online dating sites that focus specifically on listing disabled people, many

clients are not interested in that avenue.

“Sometimes there can be great matches coming from those sites, but often people looking for partners on there have disability fetishes,” she said. “The majority of the disabled community are in search of a partner who is interested in them as a full person, rather than someone who is interested in their disability.

“I do think it’s possible to find a love match on there (disability-focused sites), but I know a few friends who have had more negative experiences.”

So far, the duo have had good feedback from initial workshops and their tips on creating a mini online bio that is more likely to draw interest, whether one is disabled or not.

– A MN ing what about themselves is interesting,” McNeney said.

“Online dating sites put you in a weird situation where you can be a good partner but not be good at describing yourself in life in 200 words or less. Not everyone has that skill to write about themselves in a concise and interesting manner.”

The problem with one client’s initial bio was that it casted him in too humble a light — a relatively common fault.

“For example, he said, ‘I still don’t know what I want to do with my life or in my career,’” McNeney said. “That, to a lot of people reading online bios, seems like he doesn’t have a job and is just searching around. In reality, he had a great job and a really focused career path. He just hadn’t found his dream job as yet.”

Currently, the couple host a Facebook page for would-be daters but are working on a website, which they hope to launch in the summer.

er smile widened and eyes lit up as she verbally painted the picture of children playing and their moms all cooking as a team.

Days, sometimes hours, earlier, they were prefect strangers, who could only guess what troubles were tainting their lives behind closed doors.

They were all thrown together, often in the dead of night and with little more than a suitcase of belongings to their name.

Yet here they were, making the best of it, united by a traumatic set of circumstances, which were both unique in their own homes but bound by the brutal commonality of an abusive partner.

Valeria Titareva was one of those children in her virtual painting of life at Nova House, a transition home in Richmond for women and children fleeing domestic violence.

Titareva — who had only immigrated from the Ukraine a year earlier — was eight-years-old when she, her mom and grandmother sought refuge one morning at Nova House.

It was only when asked how her experience at the home shaped her life, that her smile momentarily withered and her head bowed ever so slightly in a vain bid to mask her eyes that were now filling up.

“It empowered me for sure,” said Titareva, now 25, still living with her mom in central Richmond.

“It made me realize that you’re capable of doing anything you want. It made me realize that you don’t have to suffer in an abusive relationship and that there’s always a way out; there’s always help out there and that you’re not alone.”

Titareva is currently working in Vancouver and is a year away from gaining her CPA designation as an accountant.

A

part from the first six months of her new life in Canada, Titareva has lived in Richmond since she immigrated as an only child with her parents from the Ukraine 19 years ago, when she was seven years old.

She said her mother wanted more opportunities for her, as it was not long after the break-up of Russia and “things were very unsteady in the Ukraine.”

Prior to moving here, however, there were problems with her parents’ relationship.

“It wasn’t the best way to start a new life in Canada,” she said.

We were all crying; it felt “I remember my like we were leaving a fam- grandmother, on my mother’s side, coming ily. We were all very emoover to visit after about tionall. a year.

“There was a big fight – V T and (my dad) raised his hands to my mother and pushed her into a wall.

“That was the first time he had been violent towards her. He had been emotionally and mentally abusive in the past. She freaked out; she got scared and called the police.”

Titareva said her dad was advised by the police to spend the night at a friend’s house. “But my mom decided she wanted to leave and we packed up as much as we could and moved straight into Nova House the next morning,” she recalled.

“We lived close by anyway, in central Richmond.”

The amount of support lavished on her family that first morning “was incredible,” said Titareva.

“My mom got so much help that day, so much so that she didn’t need to go back home. They even offered to help my

“Mom still had very little English, but Nova House was very able to help us, as they speak so many languages.

“I remember I was nervous, but not scared because as I was with my mom. As long as I was with her, I was OK.” Within a day, the staff at Nova House had enrolled Titareva in a new school, just for the week, and she got a new schoolbag and new supplies.

“I always remember being asked what kind of books and toys I liked and then being given new ones. It was kind of fun,” said Titareva, who went on to graduate from Thompson elementary, Richmond High and McNair secondary.

“I remember there was an Asian lady and her son, two Caucasian ladies, one of them had twins and one had a toddler. We were all from different cultures and spoke different languages. But there was cooking and eating together, all the kids playing together. Everything was shared. There was a playground for the children. It was more like a retreat, in a weird way.

“My mom still has a recipe from one of the Asian ladies and still uses it today.”

Titareva fondly recalls a scene where her grandmother, who spoke even less English than Titareva’s mom, was “talking” to a Chinese lady.

“Neither should have been able to understand the other, but somehow they managed to communicate,” she said.

“I think that was because the connections that were being made in there were so strong, that the language barrier didn’t exist.”

A

fter a week in Nova House, and with profuse apologies from her dad to change his ways, Titareva’s mom decided to move back to the family home.

But such was the profound, seven-day experience living at Nova House, the young Titareva said many more tears were shed.

“Even though we were only there for a short time, we developed very strong relationships,” she said.

“We were all crying; it felt like we were leaving a family. We

were all very emotional.

“We were all going through the same thing; the uncertainty and the emotions.”

Titareva said there were still problems at home, none violent, but “they kind of held it together.

“I guess it was comforting that the family was back together and my dad was great for a while, but that only lasted for so long.”

It lasted for another 10 years, as it happens, during which time Titareva became a big sister to her now 14-year-old brother.

Her parents have now been separated for five years and her father lives in Burnaby.

lthough Nova House had clearly left a mark on Titareva, she admits she’d largely forgotten about it — until a chance conversation last October with a former high school friend.

“She asked me to help out with an organization; it needed an accountant,” said Titareva.

“It was only when I looked into it that I realized (it was Nova House operators Chimo).

“I knew instantly that, at the very least, I would be signing up to volunteer.

“The board obviously had no idea I’d been through Nova House, they were very excited when they found out.”

Titareva now sits proudly on the board at Chimo and, not long after taking her seat, she got to tour the new Nova House.

“It’s beautiful and is so big. There is a big dining room and a playground; the memories all came back,” she said.

“It may be a different building in a different location than the one I was in, but the activities and the connections were still the same.

“I knew then that I’d gone full circle. I guess it was meant to be.”

if you don’t get a deal done, added Shane, who was originally looking for $500,000 for 20 per cent of the fitness equipment business, which had already achieved an established e-commerce presence and distributorship in North America and Europe.

Shane’s validation came from the fact three dragons were interested in making a deal at the time, but their overtures for a bigger portion of ownership in the enterprise were ultimately turned down.

“We wanted the offer to be the right one,” Shane said.

Still, the appearance on the program helped boost the fortunes of the company — they still do today, nearly three years after the original air date.

“Our episode has been on about seven or eight times and results in a spike in sales each time,” Shane said.

Not bad for a product pitch that Shane had no assurance would actually make it to air.

“Not many people know that when you are selected for taping the show there’s no guarantee you will be seen,” he said.

Plus, prospective businesses have to pay their way to Toronto for filming.

“You have to pay for all of that. In our case we had to hire fitness models and ship our exercise rack used for demonstrating the equipment. In all, it cost us about $30,000 with no certainty we’d even been seen on TV. For Brandon Segal and his family, their appearance on the show in April 2015 with a line of stylish and colourful compression socks (Dr. Segal’s Compression Socks) that promoted increased blood circulation came with another set of misgivings — namely the glare of the spotlight.

“To be honest, it was one of the most exhilarating — I don’t want to want say scary — things we’ve done ,” Segal said, whose father, vein specialist Dr. Jean Segal, developed the product.

A Richmond based company that bills itself as a pharmaceutical firm that has developed anti-cancer drugs is facing allegations of fraud and illegal distribution of securities from the B.C. Securities Commission.

Winter Huang (aka Dong Huang) and his sister, Vicky Dancho (aka Ju Huang) of Pegasus Pharmaceuticals Group Inc. are being called before a BCSC panel later this month to answer charges of illegally selling bonds to investors in Taiwan.

According to the BCSC, Pegasus raised US$65 million worth of bonds between 2008 and 2012, US$56 million of which would constitute a breach of securities laws. According to the BCSC, the Pegasus bonds were to raise money for a variety of business ventures. The company did not file a prospectus, and is not registered to sell securities in B.C., so the selling of the bonds could constitute a violation of the Securities Act. The BCSC also alleges that Huang sold

promissory notes guaranteed by Careseng Cancer Institute, a company also controlled by Huang and Dancho, on behalf of Pegasus Pharmaceuticals.

The money appears to have been raised for a new holistic cancer treatment centre that may not have ever existed.

“Staff contends that Huang and Dancho knew, or ought to have known, that these guarantees were false as Careseng Cancer had no operations, no employees, no revenue, and less than USD $50,000 in assets,” the BCSC said in a news release.

The allegations have not been proven in court. Huang and Dancho will face a BCSC hearing on February 23. A call to Pegasus was not returned.

Panagin Pharmaceuticals, an affiliate of Pegasus, markets an anticancer drug called HemoMex, which it claims is approved for use in the Republic of Georgia and the Republic of Uzbekistan. Pegasus Pharmaceuticals has been on the BCSC’s radar screen since 2012, when it issued a warning to investors about the company.

It’s unclear why it has taken four years for the companies to be called before the commission to answer fraud allegations.

R

etirement is not for sissies. Did I mention all the forms I had to fill out in order to get the municipal pension that I’ve been paying into for over three decades? There were forms for pension application, pension option selection, spousal declaration, nomination of beneficiary, application for extended health care and dental benefits, pension estimate, personal tax credits return, etc. This is serious stuff. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

A word of advice: give yourself lots of time

to plan for retirement. Depending on how complicated your financial and personal situations are, you may want to start planning a couple years ahead. Consider this: Do you still have kids to support? Mortgage payments? No pension plan? Since money (or lack of it) is one of the greatest sources of anxiety, be sure to get your financial ducks in order.

Whatever your money situation — single income, dual income, not enough income — figure out what you spend and what you’ll need to live on after you retire. Consider all the options before you commit to a date.

Keep in mind that if you’re lucky enough to have a pension it will usually only pay you a

portion of your pre-retirement income. Discuss that with a financial planner. No matter what you intend to do, whether it’s travelling, taking courses, or just relaxing and enjoying life, there are costs associated with everything. On the up side, there are also expenses you might not have anymore, like commuting costs and work clothing for instance.

I’m told that once you retire it takes a good year to see how your finances will play out, but if you keep track of it all, budgeting will be easier. Remember, retirement is a process that can’t be rushed. It involves transition and flexibility. When all is said and done, what matters is that you’re FREE! No more dead-

lines, work stress, office politics or people to report to or manage. Your days are yours.

Unless of course your plans involve part-time work or a second career.

Retirement can be a daunting prospect, particularly for people with no hobbies or outside interests. And for those of you who are extremely social, you’ll want to find ways to satisfy that need to be around people.

Or you’ll find yourself talking to strangers at Starbucks. A lot. So focus on what floats your boat and plan, plan, plan. Then enjoy the fruits of your labour.

T

here will be plenty at stake as top international fencers make their way to the Richmond Olympic Oval for the Bayonkyi Vancouver Men’s Epee World Cup. The three-day event, which gets underway with the individual preliminary round on Friday, is one of the final qualifying competitions for the 2016 Summer Games in Rio. Over 30 countries will be participating.

National teams began arriving in town earlier this week and training at the Dynamo Fencing Club, which has teamed up to host the event with the Canadian Fencing Federation and B.C. Fencing. It marks the fourth consecutive year the World Cup has made a stop in Richmond and Dynamo’s Igor Gantsevich says fans are in for a treat with the Olympics on the horizon.

“Men’s epee is the deepest field in the world of fencing,” explained Gantsevich, a former national

team member himself. “You can be ranked 120th and still win the World Championship. There are only 32 individual spots at the Olympics and anything can happen.

“The 2008 Olympic champion didn’t qualify in 2012 and neither did the 2004 Olympic champion in 2008. That’s how deep it is. As of today, the reigning world champion (Hungary’s Geze Imre) has not even qualified yet and I consider him one of the top 10 fencers of all-time.”

Gantsevich says there is many reasons for so much parity in men’s epee.

For starters, there is no classification for weight, height or age. Then there is different teaching methods from around the world which have all enjoyed success at one time or another. The pinnacle event of the weekend will be the men’s team competition on Sunday which will go a long way to determine qualifying for Rio. “It starts with a round of 32 playoff bracket then just keeps going,”

continued Gantsevich. “Sunday is when the magic happens. It’s going to be insane.”

Through the efforts of Gantsevich, his father Victor, David Callaghan and board members, Richmond has become the unofficial hub in Canada for fencing.

It’s popularity is reflected in Dynamo’s growing membership that now features many national team members thanks to an outstanding coaching staff. It includes Olympic gold medalist and 2007 World Cup overall winner Eric Boisse of France and former Chinese national champion Andy Zhou.

Last year, Dynamo was involved with staging the provincial, Western Canada, Canada Cup and World Cup events at the Oval.

Making this weekend possible was a $50,000 staging grant from Heritage Canada and Via Sport.

Gantsevich adds having a venue like the Olympic Oval to host international competitions has been huge for the sport.

“Any athlete who show up here

tells me what an amazing facility it is,” beamed Gantsevich. “From a budget perspective, we may not having fancy scoring systems like a country like France has, but the Oval itself compensates for everything. How can we not have Olympic calibre competitions in an Olympic venue?”

Among the contenders this weekend is Canada’s own Max BrinckCroteau. He is currently in the lead for a Pan Am zone spot, but with only a few points separating him from his competitors, a good result will greatly help his cause.

“Our athletes were boosted by the fantastic home crowd support demonstrated at the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games and I expect that our Vancouver crowds will continue that home field advantage and help lift our Canadian athletes to a crucial peak performance,” added Canadian Fencing Federation President Brad Goldie.

he Richmond Devils continued their sizzling play in the new year by taking three of four points in Kamloops.

The Devils trimmed the Storm 2-1 on Saturday and played to a 2-2 draw Sunday to improve to 12-4-6 on the season and sit just four points back of the first place Meadow Ridge Moose in the South Coast Female Amateur Hockey League.

The locals have yet to lose in 2016 (6-0-2) and will look to continue their momentum against South Fraser TNT on Saturday night at the Richmond Ice Centre, then a key game Sunday on the road versus the second place Fraser Valley Jets (14-5-2).

The Sharks will be looking to conclude a dominating run in city play with their first-ever Richmond senior boys title since the school opened in 2007, following the merger of Steveston and Charles London. They went 10-0 in league play and then showed why they’re currently ranked #3 among AAA schools in B.C. with a pair of lopsided wins, including a 94-62 semi-final triumph over RC Palmer on Wednesday night.

The Wildcats will be making their third straight appearance in city final but haven’t been in the winner’s circle since 2006. They fell last year to Richmond High and couldn’t stop Palmer from winning its eighth consecutive title in 2014.

McMath advanced with a hard-fought 75-66 win over McNair in its final four tilt.

The West Richmond rivals have only met once this season with the Sharks producing a 94-77 home court win back on Jan. 20.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.

“We had some disciplinary issues and we had to sit some guys in the first half but I thought we played very well in the second,” said Wildcats coach Bik Chatha of the earlier meeting. “They have shown all season they are the team to beat.”

Look for McMath to use its athleticism to extend its defence and try to disrupt the Sharks’ tempo. Grade 10 standout Bryce Mason suffered an ankle injury in the city junior playoffs the previous week and has yet to play.

Steveston-London raced out to a 29-7 lead on Palmer Wednesday, then put the game away with a big third quarter that opened up a 71-39 advantage.

The Wildcats had a much

tougher time with a young McNair team that has made considerable progress this season.

It was a single digit lead for much of the contest until McMath looked to have pulled away with an 11-point fourth quarter run to push the margin to 17. However, the Marlins weren’t done yet as senior standout Ryan Angala caught fire from three-point range to cut the lead to just six with two minutes remaining.

The Wildcats stemmed the momentum in a feverishly paced game that saw both teams press for much of the night.

Tuesday’s opening round

was highlighted by Palmer rallying for 86-84 win over Cambie in a battle of four and five seeds. Other scores included: Steveston-London 93 MacNeill 48; McMath 74 McRoberts 48 and McNair 93 Richmond High 55.

McRoberts defeated the Colts 101-85 Wednesday to clinch a Lower Mainland AAA playoff berth, joining the Sharks, Wildcats and Marlins. MacNeill was slated to play Richmond High on Thursday for the final spot.

Palmer and Cambie are headed to the Mainland AA tourney. Hugh Boyd and Richmond Christian will play Friday at 4 p.m. for the final Richmond spot.

McCONNELL, Ann Teresa Ann McConnell, beloved wife of Jim passed away Sunday, February 7th, 2016. Ann was born in Belfast, Ireland April 25, 1942 and immigrated to Vancouver along with husband Jim in June 1967.

Predeceased by her parents and brother John Ritchie, she will be remembered by her sister Geraldine, nephews Sean (Marian and family) and Christopher and her many cousins and friends from Ireland to Richmond and beyond.

Ann’s lovely garden in Richmond will continue to flourish in her absence. Many thanks to all the wonderful staff at Lions Manor in Richmond for all their kindness and caring.
