ell, we finally have some kind of resolution to the infamous “Soccer Coach Affair.”

On Tuesday, Crown Counsel stayed assault charges against Richmond FC coach Roberto Sciascia. The Crown stated that, in this case, “alternative measures” are appropriate to address “harm to the community,” although those measures were not disclosed.

In other words, Sciascia has not exactly been exonerated, but nor will he be saddled with criminal charges. Regarding his coaching career, BC Soccer and the Richmond FC (RFC) banned him indefinitely when the charges were laid last April. It’s unclear if that ban will now be lifted.

Either way, feelings about this outcome are going to be sharply divided. The families who initiated the charges may feel Sciascia has not been adequately held to account for what they considered on-field abusive behaviour.

(One assault charge was a result of putting his hands near a player’s neck in a mock choking gesture, to demonstrate how they were going to “choke” the opposition. The second charge appears to have been in the same vein.)

Others are incensed that this whole matter went to court in the first place.

Sciascia is a colourful character, who had his fans and detractors long before these incidents came to light. As a soccer mom who’s stood on the sidelines in Richmond for a good 13 years, I’ve heard the chatter.

While some parents appreciated how he refused to molly coddle players and set a high bar; others felt he took it too far — reportedly intimidating players. Clearly, what constitutes “over the line” is not always clear.

I remember one tournament that my son was playing in where his coach was yelling to the point that parents from other games were turning to watch the commotion. One father was horrified, as was his kid. That boy soon quit the team. On the way home in the car, I asked my son how he felt about the yelling.

He shrugged and said, “Well, we did suck.”

Again, what’s over the line for one kid is “whatever” for another.

Obviously, we want kids to enjoy the game.

Screaming and belittling players is probably not going to do it. At the same time, sports can provide some amazing life lessons and dealing with fiery coaches can be part of it.

The take away for RFC is to ensure concerned parents feel heard. The fact this case has concluded with “restorative measures” suggests there were legitimate concerns, but the matter could have been handled outside of court. Even if that’s not the case, RFC owes it to itself to look carefully at what went wrong here — and I trust it will.

My kids have had great experiences with Richmond soccer, and that’s what we deserve to be known for.

Dear Editor, Re: “Spendthrift school criticized,” Letters, Jan. 22.

It was with great interest that I read the letter by Roy Adams. As the teacher-librarian at McMath, I feel compelled to address some of the incorrect information presented there.

Mr. Adams is concerned that the school is “wasting money on useless or personal purchases.” I am happy to assert that library funds are used only to buy print resources and technology for student use.

The “significant amount of money” that Mr. Adams claims was spent in the library is in fact negligible; the signs were created on a school printer and the alarm is a tiny batteryoperated device attached to a doorframe.

It is true that the alarm was set off a handful of times in the first few weeks — sometimes in error, at other times as a typical teenage prank — but this adjustment period was to be expected and was certainly shortlived.

Mr. Adams also worries that the change in traffic flow “blocks off access to the library,” but again, this is incorrect. This change has revitalized and energized the library. Sadly, in past years our library was being used as a hallway, not a place of learning.

By closing one set of doors, the library reclaimed its space and students now come to the library not through the library. In fact, this year has seen the library grow into a vibrant,

busy place where students come to refine research skills; learn how to use databases and cite sources; access technology; learn about Internet safety and social etiquette; listen to author presentations and relax with a good book.

The library is always buzzing with classes learning new skills and seniors working during their study blocks. It is absolutely teeming with students at lunchtime, many of whom have simply come in to read and discuss the books they enjoy.

The McMath library has seen an unprecedented increase of 150 per cent in class bookings and 200 per cent in book circulations this year, all due to our decision regarding the doors and the resulting reclaimed space.

Rather than dealing with student concerns through a public forum, both the administration and I would have preferred to privately discuss this rationale with Roy Adams, both to address his concerns and clarify some of his misconceptions.

Unfortunately, however, there is no “Roy Adams” registered at McMath Secondary School.

More info on tunnel option needed Dear Editor, On Monday night, city council had a lengthy discussion on the Massey Tunnel Replacement Project.

There are plenty of questions about the new bridge, but can we simply draw the conclusion that an improved or expanded tunnel is a better option based on that notion?

As a councillor, I believe when I make decisions on city matters it must be wellreasoned. In the debate on the new bridge I cannot honestly say that I have enough information to speak in favour of a tunnel.

Without knowing what we are actually talking about with an improved or expanded tunnel, the questions we raised against the new bridge (the bottle-neck at the Oak Street

Bridge, environmental impact, getting in and out of the road system, etc.) can be equally applied to the tunnel.

Furthermore, what is the cost of the improved tunnel and its cost-effectiveness?

How many lanes are we talking about? Will it address the long range traffic needs in Richmond? What is the impact on the habitat as the river bed will be disturbed when construction work is done?

Until we have more information, I consider the tunnel idea a nice concept with not much substance, yet. Therefore, it is premature for me to assert that an improved tunnel is a better option.

Dear Editor, I had the opportunity to visit the informational meeting held Jan. 26 regarding the proposed bridge.

One question I had asked was what was going to happen to the tunnel and could it not just be left in place and thus save a few million dollars on the cost to remove it. It was carefully explained to me the cost was miniscule relative to the proposed overall budget and the concern was in the event of a catastrophic earthquake the tunnel could possibly shift and compromise the integrity of the bridge abutments that are to be placed straddling the tunnel ends.

To prevent this occurrence, the two middle sections would be removed as these two are the most vulnerable as they are situated on liquefiable material and have the minimum cover of the tunnel’s six sections.

Furthermore, it was explained there was also the possibility of these middle sections breaking loose and popping to the surface.

The reasoning went on to explain that if the tunnel broke up it would cause a major contamination of the river environment due to the release of the carbon monoxide that has been absorbed by the concrete structure over the last 50 some years of vehicle use. That is something I had not considered. I am now thinking about not using underground parking structures because of the health hazard.

I read with interest another letter writer, who argued that, since the bridge is being built, in part, to allow bigger ships to utilize the Fraser River, those ships should be tolled just like the motorists crossing the bridge. His suggestion of a dollar a ton seems reasonable to me.

if the lighting is so under illuminated that walkers can’t see more than a few feet ahead, and barely around themselves, it poses a big problem at night.

No one wants a tragedy, which could have been avoided by simply bumping up the wattage on public street lights.

Somewhere, a bad decision was made. I hope the city will deign to correct it.

Spitting mad with behaviour Philip Raphael

I

Nearly 50 years of Richmond Hospital Imagine not having a hospital when you need it. Richmond Hospital is something we often take for granted, but more than 50 years ago, patients requiring hospital care had to travel to Vancouver or New Westminster. Richmond’s doctors were also spending a lot of time driving back and forth between their practice in Richmond and hospitals in Vancouver or elsewhere. And at the time Richmond was undergoing a population boom as young families were attracted by the new houses and cheap land prices.

In 1953, a group of community leaders formed the Richmond Hospital Society in order to get Richmond a hospital. It took 13 years of hard work, small triumphs, setbacks and near-misses, but thanks to the hard work of community leaders, Richmond finally got what was then a state-of-the-art hospital in 1966.

In 1966, it was a much different community that Richmond Hospital opened to. Other than houses along the south side of Westminster Highway, the hospital was surrounded by fields and vacant lots. There were even cows grazing to the north. At six storeys, the hospital was by far the tallest building in Richmond—otherwise, there were no high rises. The first big apartments on Minoru were still five years away. Minoru Park had an outdoor pool, the pavilion (recently demolished) and an arena that sometimes hosted rock concerts featuring the likes of Jefferson Airplane.

Richmond Square, Richmond’s first big mall, had just opened. It’s where the south end of Richmond Centre is now. The north end of the mall wasn’t there. Neither was The Bay. Lansdowne was a race track.

Aberdeen was a house in a thicket.

Richmond had a Chinese restaurant, the Bamboo Grove on No. 3 Road. It served chop suey. It’s still there, but now features deluxe signature items such as pork stomach soup with ginkgo, which you can enjoy with a rare $300 red Bordeaux.

There were no Arthur Laing or Knight Street Bridges. There was a Fraser Street Bridge, a swing bridge at the north end of No. 5 Road, but a barge crashed into it in 1966.

Vancouver International Airport was about to open a new terminal, allowing

super-jets. It served 1.9 million passengers in 1968. Today, nearly 20 million passengers come through YVR annually.

The population of Richmond was about 50,000 when Richmond Hospital opened.

Nowadays, there are more than 50,000 people in the hospital’s City Centre neighbourhood alone. Those fields with the cows in them now have high-rise condominiums as Richmond’s central core becomes a dense urban neighbourhood.

Richmond currently has an estimated 213,000 residents and is growing quickly.

There will be an estimated 230,000 people in Richmond by 2021.

Richmond has grown up into a busy and vibrant city in 50 years, but Richmond Hospital’s original North Tower hasn’t changed much. It is not up to seismic standards and needs to be replaced. It is obsolete and antiquated for this rapidly growing urban centre. According to BC Stats, Richmond has the fastest growing seniors population in BC, projected to increase by 121 percent by 2030. This growth is putting even more pressure on the hospital because the older we get, the more we need access to health care.

n a community faced with issues concerning language on signs, it seems even notices using basic pictograms are having trouble getting their message across.

Greg Clackson, a frequent swimmer at Minoru Pool, is literally spitting mad about the conduct of some fellow pool users.

The reason?

Clackson claims some pay swimmers no heed to numerous signs posted in the facility’s changing rooms and showers to refrain from spitting inside the building — in the changing room shower area and even in the pool.

After witnessing people brazenly flouting the rules, Clackson said he confronted a pair of men and asked them to stop their unsanitary behaviour.

“They got really confrontational and thought they were being picked on,” Clackson told the News. “One guy said, ‘I’ve got a cold, that’s why I’m spitting it up.’”

Clackson told them that’s all the more reason not to continue, for concern of spreading illness.

“There’s high spots in the showers where the water really doesn’t wash stuff off,” Clackson said. “And there are kids in there with bare feet. It’s very unhygienic.”

Clackson said he understands that many people shy away from the facility because of such behaviour.

City of Richmond spokesman, Ted Townsend said in an email that, “We follow

all applicable health standards for dealing with issues of cleanliness and hygiene and can ensure users that our aquatic centres are safe.

“Unfortunately, we do have some patrons who may engage in spitting or other unsanitary practises, but this represents a very small number of our patrons.”

He added that pool users are encouraged to respect the concerns of other users and community standards for behaviour.

Townsend said, based on recent public input from patrons, the signage is being reviewed to see if a more comprehensive approach is warranted to deal with the issue.

“The topic has been placed on the agenda for the February meeting of the Richmond Aquatic Services Board to discuss,” Townsend said.

Richmond soccer coach who was banned from the field amid assault accusations has had the charges against him stayed.

Roberto Sciascia, who was a coach at Richmond FC, will now be free of any criminal convictions after his case was heard at Richmond Provincial Court on Tuesday.

Although he didn’t appear at court, it’s understood Sciascia has undertaken alternative rehabilitation “measures,” according to Crown spokesman Neil McKenzie, in order for the case to be handled outside of the judicial system.

McKenzie wouldn’t say what those measures were in the case of Sciascia.

However, apologies to the complainants, and anger management counselling are possible remedies.

The veteran coach, who’s won many titles while working with local youth teams and was also Richmond FC’s technical director, had been accused by two young players and their families of

VAPOR dodges hefty legal bill Graeme Wood

A

group of local citizens concerned about plans to ship jet fuel along the Fraser River will not be tasked to pay back upwards of $20,000 in legal fees to a consortium of major airlines.

The group, VAPOR, took the consortium — the Vancouver Airport Fuel Facilities Corporation — and the Province of B.C. to court last year, claiming the public consultation process was flawed.

“It may seem a small victory given we lost the main case — in June 2015 — on the adequacy of public consultation, but it isn’t,” said VAPOR member Sandra Bourque.

“It’s a big victory for people pursuing issues of public interest in court. It means con-

cerned citizens should not fear taking legal action against environmental wrongs knowing they would automatically have to pay court costs of those they challenge, should they lose,” added Bourque.

The Honourable Madam Justice Dillon rendered the decision last Friday. She was the same judge who heard VAPOR’s case last year.

“Justice Dillon, however, made it clear she considered this case a matter of great public interest,” said Bourque.

In the original decision, Dillon had noted that it was not the court’s place to judge the adequacy and meaningfulness of public involvement stipulated in the BC Environmental Assessment Act. She stated the length of public consultation was “constrained” by the law.

Drug lab suspects charged Alan Campbell

wo men have been charged after police uncovered a synthetic drug lab at a vacant home in the southeast of the city, near Richmond Ice Centre.

A little more than a year ago, on Jan. 11, 2015, Richmond Mounties responded to a call that two suspects had broken into the property at 14291 Triangle Rd. near its junction with No. 6 Road.

The suspects were spotted loading items into an awaiting vehicle. Two suspects allegedly fled on foot after ditching their Hyundai

Tucson SUV. Later, at the request of the property owners, police entered and secured the vacant property and discovered equipment and apparatus consistent with a synthetic drug lab.

A considerable amount of solvents and corrosive liquids, commonly used in the production of synthetic drugs, were also found.

The RCMP’s federal clan lab team assisted in the processing of the lab.

After a lengthy and thorough investigation by the Richmond RCMP’s drug section, charges were laid against Jeffrey Ricardo White, 28, of Coquitlam, and Shawn Vinsen Coombs, 43, of Abbotsford.

“It was the children that gave me the strength to fight mentally that night,” said author and domestic violence counsellor Dhillon, keynote speaker Wednesday at Richmond-based Chimo Community Services’ annual domestic violence conference, as she described yet another savage beating at the hands of her husband.

“I yelled and screamed and somebody came to help me; there was a light.

“I couldn’t figure out who that person was. I later realized, it was God.” Such was the defiance in the face of brutality that Dhillon was now displaying, her husband had her committed to a mental institute in India — where they were living at the time — for electric shock treatment.

“I was put in there because I was starting to stand up for myself,” she said.

“But it was there that someone tried to help me. They got me a one-way ticket back to Canada.”

Unfortunately, Dhillon’s husband found out and was waiting at the airport.

“My kids found out and asked to be put in the suitcase, assuring me they would be good kids,” she said, still visibly upset at recalling the moment.

efore Dhillon got married in Richmond, she said her husband, coming from one of the wealthiest families in India, was a charming man.

Within three hours of becoming a wife, however, she was sat down in a room, with her husband swearing and drinking next door, and was told that her husband was now God and he was everything.

“From then on, I was the victim of this man; day in, day out, in my own home,” she said.

Dhillon: ‘Kidnapped’ her kids From page 12 “I was tortured, beaten, bound and kept in a corner for hours. I had to get permission to go to the bathroom.

“He took me to India under false pretences and sodomized me after tying me up with my nylons. I sat there, planning my escape from this ‘everyday terrorism.’

“He would break my face. You may not notice, but I have an artificial jaw, my husband broke it so badly, I’ve had 10 surgeries.”

During one of the surgeries, Dhillon’s heart stopped, sparking a code blue resuscitation.

“Because of one man’s rage and brutality, I will suffer for the rest of my life.

“I got married into one of the richest families in India but no one could imagine that what was happening behind closed doors, was a murder waiting to happen.”

Dhillon said her biggest fear was her children seeing her getting murdered.

“My daughter recently recalled how it was “sunny on the outside, but dark inside our home. They said they wanted to finish school as quickly as possible, so they could come home and check that I was still alive.

“My husband would get the children together and ask them if their mom beat them?

Scared, they would say yes. He would then order them to beat me and, scared again, they would tap me. He would then take over.”

aving found the bravery to escape, Dhillon “kidnapped” her kids and smuggled them into Canada; before going “into hiding.”

“One day, I got a call from my niece, telling me my husband had died,” said Dhillon.

“He had drowned. Drowned in the same place where he had tried to drown me.

“I went to the funeral with the kids, just to make sure he was actually dead. And at the funeral, I did something I didn’t think I could do. I forgave him. Not for him. For me. I no longer wanted to live with the hatred. That was the day my life began again.”

Her voice lifting and with a suggestion of a smile, she fast forwarded to today, explaining how her children are her “biggest cheerleaders.”

“It’s amazing, because I really feared the girls would grow up to be abused and the boys would become abusers.”

Dhillon said she’s frequently asked why she stayed with her husband so long?

“Fear,” she said, simply.

“He tried to silence me by breaking my jaw, but today, my voice is louder than ever.

“It’s not easy standing up here…telling strangers how my husband raped me and urinated on me. But what I would like is for you all to go back to your homes and say, ‘each one of us matters’ and ‘never give up.’

“And if your neighbour always seems to have her curtains closed and maybe doesn’t talk to you, maybe she’s been warned never to make eye contact with anyone.

“If you think that’s happening, don’t turn your back, take over some baking or something and say hello.”

Dhillon is the author of Black & Blue Sari, an autobiographical account of her life with an abusive spouse.

hat is it that intrigues so many about conspiracy theories?

From those who inhale every puff of gunsmoke from the grassy knoll to aliens colonizing the moon, why does it draw our attention, even if we have just a passing interest in the latest revelation or explanation?

Farhad Dastur, a cognitive scientist at Kwantlen

Polytechnic University, will explore that moth to a flame relationship with a presentation on the psychology of conspiracies, superstitions, personal illusions and mass delusions during his Feb. 2 KPU TALK (Third Age Learning at Kwantlen) at the Richmond campus.

TALK is a series of education activities for those 50 and older, featuring guest speakers who offer their insights, information and experiences on a variety of subjects — from Dastur’s

take on psychology to more down-to-asphalt aspects, such as tips on buying a new or used car.

Dastur said the lure of conspiracy theories can be explained by looking back at our ancestors who, in their time, had to be aware of threats to their very existence from outside forces, be it nature (predators or even climate), or other people harbouring malicious intent.

Tree Preservation Coordinator Gordon Jaggs is the man behind the city’s efforts to protect trees.

At Richmond City Hall, he leads a crack team of three tree preservation officers, including him (Jaggs does not deal with street trees or parks).

A horticulturalist, Jaggs, like Lee, has a love affair with trees and acknowledges their inherent value.

“Trees are beautiful. They do so many wonderful things for us,” he said.

“We want the trees in neighbourhoods and on the same lot. We don’t want them in a park. Nobody knows where these trees are,” said Lee. According to the city, the tree reserve account on Jan.1, 2015 was at $500,383, or the equivalent of about 1,000 mature trees. In 2015 the city added another $279,237 from developers. The city, in 2015, planted about $108,000 worth of trees on city land. It also used $300,000 of that money toward tree planting for “capital projects.”

An example of this methodology is the Railway Greenway where 550 trees were planted over the past few years and 600 more replacement trees are scheduled to be added. Replacement tree money is expected to fund tree planting on the Garden City Lands.

In the last five years (to Nov.1 2015) there were 8,285 trees applied for removal through Jaggs’ office and 810 were refused. The city ensured 9,180 trees were replaced.

Jaggs noted the city attempts to keep a healthy mix of deciduous and coniferous trees.

Saving what is left

Part of Jaggs’ job also entails keeping trees healthy. His team has some innovative tricks up its sleeve.

Notably, Jaggs said there are “unique problems” in maintaining trees in Richmond. The biggest, perhaps, is the flood plain; when a new home is built it is raised to a new elevation. This can suffocate

roots, so a large tree needs to have its drip line (the part below the canopy) protected.

As well, development means digging, and Jaggs is constantly on the phone with builders instructing them to properly manage tree roots by installing root barriers to protect structures, for example.

Jaggs encourages builders to hydro-excavate (digging a hole with high pressure water) to install utility lines, instead of cutting the roots.

Also, if a fence is to be installed, a builder can create a bridge across the root system instead of laying down concrete, noted Jaggs.

Another big tool for the team, said Jaggs, is education, such as notifying people of the perils of tree topping — when the main trunk is cut at the top, leading to rot over time.

Jaggs said many of the unhealthy trees that are cut down are a result of topping.

“We will definitely have a more healthy tree canopy in 20-25 years. Topping wasn’t considered to be bad 20 years ago,” noted Jaggs.

But while some cities have recently performed satellite-assisted tree canopy studies — with Vancouver finding its canopy had been reduced from 22 per cent in 1996 to 18 per cent in 2014 — Richmond has not done so, however Jaggs said the city is planning to.

MacGougan said she is concerned about the existing tree canopy.

“What’s happening is they’re replacing a mature tree with a small tree that then takes decades to grow. I won’t live long enough to see those trees grow to maturity,” she said.

Beaumont is, however, concerned about tree protection, claiming at least half of the trees being saved are inadequately protected.

Roots can be suffocated from a new home’s footprint or poor landscaping.

Trees may be cut down because they look “sparse” or even if they have co-dominant stems (deemed hazardous).

Jaggs said it is by way of the development application that his team and the city’s contracted arborists are able to assess a tree’s health.

“Rezoning provides an opportunity for more scrutiny,” said Jaggs.

Lee is skeptical.

“I’m concerned that the city and the arborists have their own agenda. I’m wondering how these trees that are fairly young can be considered so unhealthy?”

Resident Dean Beauvais is also skeptical of arborist reports.

Beauvais noted a perception among many residents is that trees are declared unhealthy when it is convenient.

“The ‘diseased’ response is the only answer you will get from anyone (at the city),” he said.

Retired forestry manager Rod Beaumont, a longtime Richmondite, noted the vast majority of Richmond’s mature/significant trees are relatively young (40-60 years), having been planted on what once used to be farmland.

“My personal view is you can find every tree to be unhealthy or you can find every tree to be healthy.

It depends on what you want to do

Jaggs’ team is also tasked to ensure protective fencing is installed around protected trees during building. The increasingly iconic orange fences in Richmond neighbourhoods are supposed to be as wide as the tree’s canopy (drip line) and nothing is to be placed inside the fencing.

Richmond was one of the first municipalities in the region to initiate fines, noted Jaggs.

The city can fine a developer $1,000 for non-compliance of protective fencing.

Cutting down a tree without a permit can cost up to $10,000.

In the last three years the city has taken action against 103 construction sites, totaling $223,000 in fines.

MacGougan said the fines (established in 2006) aren’t stiff enough considering what new homes are being sold for these days.

“Trees are not properly valued.

If developers had to pay the full cost of what that tree is worth environmentally and economically then they would then make some modifications in their development plans to save trees,” she said. " The Richmond News asked each member of Richmond city council for his or her thoughts on whether the tree bylaw was effective.

Only Coun. Carol Day responded, expressing concern that the bylaw “does not seem to affect new houses.”

“Our bylaws allow far too many trees to be destroyed and yet if a homeowner wants to remove a tree they often get a simple ‘no,’” from the city, said Day.

It turns out Lee, a born and raised Richmond actor, is just plain good at playing the steely-eyed bad guy — just look at his demo reel. But he’s actually nice. Friendly, even.

Lee has played lots of other characters — cops, doctors, a gay wedding planner — and now he’s getting the chance to show the world his less serious side in a short film that just may be the start of something bigger.

Lee grew up in Shellmont, near the neighbourhood’s old bowling alley. His family’s home had a ditch out front. He went to Kingswood elementary, then St. Paul School.

For high school, he took the bus to Vancouver College. There, he was drawn to engineering. He studied it at University of B.C. and got a job working with fuel cells.

“I was getting really bored so I just decided to do something completely out of the norm, something I had never really done before. I signed up for an acting class,” said

he developing opinion in some quarters that personal car ownership will disappear in the driverless universe, mentioned in last week’s Road Rules, is based on a number of trends. One is the growing indifference in the status quo universe of ‘millennials’—the demographic cohort with birth years ranging from the early 1980s to the early 2000s—to obtaining a driver’s license and to car ownership.

A new report by Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle from the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute states that three out of four people who were 20 to 24 years old in 2014 had a driver’s license. The exact figure—76.7%— represents a “sharp decline” from 79.7% in 2011, 82% in 2008 and 91.8% in 1983. Teens are also showing a declining interest in embarking on the now almost universal graduated licensing programs: in 2014, 24.5% of 16-year-olds down from 27.5% in 2011, 31.1% in 2008 and 46.2% in 1983, according to the same University of Michigan report.

The order of the many reasons for this trend – based on the percentage of responses to the question, “What is the main reason you do not currently have a driver’s license?” – is somewhat surprising.

Environmental concerns are closer to the bottom— not the top — of the list. In fact being too busy to get a license, and cost, and the availability of and preference for alternatives like biking, walking and public transit are the main, more humdrum, reasons.

The notion that the need to drive for face-to-face interaction for both personal and business purposes has been wholly supplanted by the Internet is also not at the top of the list, although it ranks ahead of environmental concerns. Some young adults are reported as saying they do not like to drive and are afraid of it.

Of course whether or not use of or ownership of a driverless car would still require a driver’s license of some sort remains to be discussed. Enthusiasm for driverless car ownership might skyrocket without the bother of a driver’s license, and the expense of car insurance. Likewise, the comparative cost of driverless cars is not yet known. Reduction or elimination of safety features and expected greater fuel efficiency could possibly reduce ownership and maintenance costs.

A second trend is the steadily growing popularity of ride-sharing services as a reasonable alternative, especially in dense urban centres. Skepticism about this trend is now belied by new statistics from expense management company Certify which, after analyzing more than 30 million transactions in 2015, found that 41% of rides taken by corporate travelers in the US were with Uber. This compared with 39% of rides in rental cars and 20% of rides in taxis during the same three-month period and is the first time Uber rides exceeded car rental rides as the top mode of choice for business travelers.

Reports on the ride-sharing trend also note that, “Uber rides were up more than 400% last year vs. 2014 while …Lyft saw its percentage of rides jump 700% last year compared with 2014.”

Price, convenience, reliability, quality of the ride, overall ‘less hassle’ are all cited as reasons for this growing preference.

“What is extraordinary with algae in general, and particularly the one we work with, is that every four hours it doubles itself,” Soheyl said. “Other plants can take three to four months to produce a crop. We harvest every day.”

All that’s needed is a constant environment of 33 degrees Celsius, plenty of light and a source of nutrients to grow.

“We have created those conditions here using aquaponics and the algae can grow quite fast,” Susan said.

“We see that algae has tremendous properties to help our planet,” Soheyl said. “It needs carbon dioxide to grow, so it gets rid of what we don’t want and gives us what we do want.”

In terms of a fuel source, large amounts can be dried and burned to generate electricity. And it can even have the potential to be used as a biofuel instead of crops grown to produce ethanol.

“It can be the antidote for all the pollution on the planet,” Soheyl said.

ention the word “Shriners” to someone in the street and, if you’re lucky, you might get a vague acknowledgment of clowns, funny tassled hats and maybe mini motorcycles.

What you’re unlikely to find is an awareness, let alone any appreciation, that the Shriners is a serious, philanthropic fraternity that spreads across North America and annually raises more than $850 million to provide free, expert medical care for children in one of its 22 hospitals and health care facilities.

In B.C., although the Shriners have a lab at BC Children’s Hospital for kids with walking disorders, the organization’s nearest hospital is in Portland and they recently opened a state-ofthe-art children’s hospital in Montreal.

At a Richmond golf club on Saturday evening, some of the local men helping keep those facilities operating “moved up the line” at the Shriners’ B.C. and Yukon chapter’s annual “installation.”

And the wife of Steve Whiteside — the Shriners’ newly acclaimed “potentate” or president of the chapter — feels it’s a good time for people to realize the work of the historical organization.

“He’s been doing this for 20 years and wanted to go “up the line” and do even more amazing work,” said Dorie Whiteside, of Hamilton, east Richmond, who spends as much time as her husband helping the Shriners with their charitable work.

“Shriners do incredible work and not enough people know what they do.

“At certain times of the year, it takes up most of our free time; but it’s free time well spent and you can’t put a price on seeing the

great work that is done for children.”

The first chapter of the Shriners met in New York City in 1872. And as membership grew, they spread across the U.S. and by the early 1900s, into Canada, Mexico and Panama. Today, there are approximately 309,000 Shriners throughout the U.S., Canada, Germany, Mexico, Philippines, Puerto Rico and Panama.

Shriners Hospitals for Children was founded in 1922 with the goal of providing expert medical care for children, with no financial burden to the patients or their families.

o a librarian walks into a bar….oops, I mean a financial planner’s office and says: “Okay, here’s my pension statement, and you know how much I’ve got in my RRSP and my investment account.

Can I afford to retire at 60?” And the financial planner says: “Hell, ya!” And that’s how it started.

I’d been toying with the idea of retiring for a few years, but got to a point where health issues were beginning to take centre stage.

Bad gut, bum knee, chronic insomnia; it all added up to a lot of tired days and pain.

All while working a full time job for more than 32 years as a librarian. I realized that if I want to have a long and quality retirement with fairly good health to enjoy travelling, hobbies and other stuff, I’d better start planning early.

Let me say from the get-go that I don’t claim to know everything about preparing for retirement. But maybe my own experiences can help some of you.

I realize how lucky I am to have a good pension plan, because according to some Canadian sources, only about 32 per cent of Canadians have workplace pension plans. Which means the rest of you better be saving like crazy. Or have a large inheritance you can count on.

Luckily, I was able to attend a free seminar hosted by the Municipal Pension Plan, where they went over the details of how to prepare for retirement.

I actually took this seminar one and a half years before I retired and then again six months before I retired.

For those of you with no pension plan, there are loads of retirement seminars available (usually hosted by financial institutions — some free, some fee) where you can get this valuable information.

The trick is to do your homework and make sure to choose a reputable institution.

These are some things you’ll want to consider: Financial readiness: ! What is your current lifestyle costing you per month? ! Are your prepared to possibly downsize your retirement plans? ! Do you pay rent or do you still have a mortgage? ! What are your annual health care expenses? ! How much do you budget for entertainment, dining out, clothes, travel, etc.?

Emotional readiness: ! What will you do with all your free time? ! Can you be flexible in your plans? ! Can you adjust to unscheduled days? ! Is your partner or spouse retired?

Your personal attitudes, values and perceptions will definitely shape your retirement. And while there are loads of things to take into consideration, first and foremost is the financial piece, so start with that. Because no one can live on air. Unless you’re a radio journalist.

game winless streak and headed into their home ice tilt nine points back of the Grandview Steelers. A 9-6 triumph would launch a three game win streak that now has Delta within three points of the suddenly struggling second place Steelers.

In the meantime, the Sockeyes continued their roller coaster ride of late with a depleted line-up that required call-ups Paris Jeyachandran and Grayson Valentre.

Richmond dropped a 7-2 home ice decision to Ridge Meadows but then came up with a big 4-2 road win over leagueleading North Vancouver two nights later, only to fall to the Ice Hawks.

The unpredictability should continue over the final three weeks of the regular season thanks to balance the league hasn’t seen in some time.

“It’s probably the most parity I have seen in the nine years I have been involved,” said Ice Hawks general manager Peter Zerbinos. “That’s a good thing for the league. Before we use to have teams running away with it by Christmas.

“This year in the playoffs, you just don’t know what’s going to happen.”

It’s a reason why coaches and management are not losing any sleep on figuring out potential quarter-final match-ups.

The Wolf Pack have already locked up to spot in the Tom Shaw Conference, yet the Ice Hawks have played the defending league champions very tough with a 2-2-1 record in the season series.

Richmond has not beaten the Steelers in five meetings but each game has been close, including the last three going to overtime.

JORDAN GILLES Jordan Gilles is off to an outstanding start in his rookie season in the National Lacrosse League with the Colorado Mammoth. The defensive standout was selected in the sixth round of the NLL draft and promptly earned a roster spot after a solid training camp. The Richmond Roadrunner product also has wasted little time getting his name on the scoresheet. He notched a goal in his first-ever game and has added two more since, including last Saturday’s 14-5 road win over the Vancouver Stealth to keep the Mammoth perfect on the season at 4-0. The McMath Secondary graduate is coming off a terrific career in the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League. The Richmond News is proud to recognize Jordan as Athlete of the Month for January.

“If you’re planning to go all the way then you are going to have to play everyone eventually anyways,” continued Zerbinos. “You’re only focus should be on the next team in your way.”

Seventeen-year-old Nicholas Wicks continued his impressive rookie season with a power play goal into a gaping net, midway through the second period to give the Sockeyes a 2-1 lead. That’s when the Ice Hawks came to life, led by Luc Soares.

The 19-year-old, who joined the club in the new year from the junior “A” ranks, notched a pair of goals to close out the frame and give the hosts the lead for good.

Quinten Wideski doubled the margin in the opening minute of the third period and Sam Kozlowski added an empty netter in the final minute. Seafair grad Cam Cuthbert had the other Delta goal, while Tyler Paterson opened the scoring for Richmond back in the first period.

Icing…

The Sockeyes were slated to host the Wolf Pack last night and will be in action again Saturday (5:30 p.m.) for the club’s annual Alumni Game at Minoru. Proceeds from ticket sales, a beer garden and 50/50 draw go to the club’s highly successful Sockeyes Scholarship Foundation.

Tickets are $10 and available at the door.

Spencer Berry recorded a goal while Wicks had two assists as the Tom Shaw Conference doubled the Harold Brittain Conference 4-2 in the PJHL Prospects Game Monday night in Abbotsford. Sam Atkins and Connor Alderson also played in the game.

Oval hosting Karate Nationals T

he Richmond Oval once again welcomes top athletes from across the country this weekend for the 41st annual National Karate Championships.

It marks the fourth consecutive year the Nationals will take place at the Oval, part of an agreement reached between Karate Canada and the Richmond Olympic Oval Corporation back in 2012 to host six major competitions.

The venue also was the site of the North American Cup in 2014 and will be again in 2017.

The Steveston Karate Club is expected to be wellrepresented again and look

to continue its remarkable streak of producing at least one national champion for 23 consecutive years.

The local contingent is led

by Toshi Uchiage, who has won 13 national senior titles in Kata and 18 overall since he began competing at the junior level when he was 16.

His sisters Hidemi and Sumi Uchiage are Team Canada members that typically are matched up against each other. Hidemi edged Sumi for the gold medal a year ago and was also fourth in the -55 kg Kumite competition.

Another Steveston member to watch is Seiya Takeu-

chi who has won bronze in the Senior Kata Division the past two years.

The championships will feature the following competitions — Female and Male Individual Kata (five age divisions), Female and Male Team Kata (three age divisions). Female Individual Kumite, Male Individual Kumite, Female Team Kumite and Male Team Kumite.

The Kumite Divisions will feature five age brackets and a variety of weight categories. Nearly 100 B.C. athletes are expected to compete.

Karate joins softball and baseball as sports short-list-

ed for inclusion at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Toyko.

The opening ceremonies are slated for Friday morning with competition continuing through Sunday.

cMath Wildcats Grade 8 girls basketball team continued its solid season to date by capturing the McNair Marlins Tournament.

The Wildcats played against a very tenacious and defiant group from Little Flower Academy in their opening game, rallying from a six point deficit to edge the Vancouver school 22-21.

The momentum continued with a 32-16 win over the Kitsilano Blue Demons on Saturday morning, setting the stage for the final against the host team.

The game was full of energy and excitement right from the tipoff. Both teams fought hard in a see-saw battle, losing key players in the last few minutes of the game due to foul trouble.

The raw emotion from this contest could be felt by the players and the parents in the stands. In the end the Wildcats prevailed with a 39-33 triumph.

It sets the stage for what should be a competitive city championship tournament next month, with the Wildcats taking a perfect 7-0 record into league play this week.

Lafarge Canada Inc. is seeking to renew Permit No. GVA0154 for continued authorization under GVRD Air Quality Management Bylaw No. 1082, 2008 (as amended). Lafarge has been operating in the City of Richmond since 1956. A complete plant upgrade and redesign was completed in 1999, increasing the plant performance as well as decreasing environmental emissions through the installation of new emission control technologies. The plant continues to work to reduce its environmental footprint through the production of lower carbon portland limestone cement and by replacing fossil fuels with low carbon fuels (biomass). The Richmond plant is applying for an increase in concentration limit for nitrogen oxides to 1200 mg/m3. This request is not accompanied by an increase in total authorized emissions, the plant requests to keep the current permitted total yearly authorized emissions for nitrogen oxides. To support the requested increase in concentration, air dispersion modelling for nitrogen oxides was conducted to simulate the dispersion of maximum emissions from the Richmond Cement Plant. The results showed predicted total ambient air concentration of nitrogen oxides below all applicable ambient air quality objectives. The Richmond plant produces cement for the lower mainland, province of BC, Alberta and Washington and Dakotas in the United States.
