onnections. That’s what good health is all about, according to our new medical health officer.

That’s not to say working out doesn’t matter, or that state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging technology doesn’t lengthen our lives. But, as I read it, if there is a single determinant of general good health, it is the sense of feeling connected. This is one of the highlights found in a community health report you can read about on page 19.

It’s an interesting idea that speaks to the fact we are remarkably social creatures who require the support of others, even to maintain basic health. (Makes one think about the practice of solitary confinement in our prisons, but that’s a whole other issue.)

The idea also speaks to how our mental state impacts our physical state, perhaps even more than the other way around. As a reporter in Ottawa, I remember interviewing one of leading oncologists in Ontario at the time, who said the word “just” should be removed from the phrase “just a placebo effect.” There is nothing “just” about it, he argued. In fact, he said it matters more that a person is feeling better than that they were actually getting better — and this was a guy who had all the latest meds and gizmos at his disposal.

So, it is concerning to see that, although Richmond is reported to have one of the highest life expectancy in Canada, we’re lacking a sense of connection, leading to a significantly lower level of general and mental health compared to the regional average, according to the report.

So, what about this? We’re an affluent community with great community centres (which I’ve waxed on about in past columns,) bike paths and public spaces, all of which help create a sense of connection with each other and our environment. We have some remarkable neighbourhoods and organizations that also build belonging. Still, this report is telling us something we should attend to. In looking for answers why, we could point to cultural divides, economic disparity, and language barriers. We could also mention the sense of anxiety created by housing prices. Although none of this is unique to Richmond. What is unique to our city is how we manage them, and how we set priorities — and I really do mean “we.”

Our local council sets the stage, and some policies have been more helpful than others, but every citizen has a measure of responsibility. As does every organization, and that would include the Richmond News. Creating connections is actually my single highest priority at this paper. So let’s do it. There are lots of ideas out there about how to create healthy, integrated communities. We don’t need to reinvent the wheel, but we do need make it a priority and get that wheel rolling.

LETTERSto the Editor City’s decision to end LUCs a step towards consistency Dear Editor, Re: “Ding dong LUCs are dead,” News, Nov. 27.

I am writing to thank the Richmond council and Mayor for voting yes to terminate LUC contracts early.

I know that there were many different perspectives to balance and weigh, and I am deeply grateful to the city staff for their hard work, patience and openness in gathering and sharing data before making a decision on this issue.

Richmond council has shown stewardship to navigate the city through a critical phase in the city’s growth.

I believe that, as residents, we will feel the positive effect of these changes in our neighborhoods as city bylaws start to get applied consistently to all residential building permits.

I also hope that all of us have learned something through the civic debate that was part of examining the city’s building bylaws and the LUC issue.

I learned that the mayor and council are engaged with the issues that their residents bring to it, and I also learned that there are many residents in many different parts of this city who care deeply about what kind of “Richmond” we are trying to build together.

With respect to the LUC issue, I learned there are some neighborhoods where uneven sized lots may make it difficult for some homeowners to abide by all the parameters of the stipulated residential bylaws. Going forward, I hope council and staff will look into lot/site specific zoning and use it as a tool to allow for a diversity of housing stock to be maintained.

I also hope that council will look into the issue of setbacks and side yards to create a rubric that allows for new homes to integrate better within their neighbourhoods.

I hope in the year to come before the LUCs expire, the city will continue to use “persuasion” as a tool to dialogue with builders and new homeowners so that new home construction is more mindful in its building practices.

In setting a tone of consistency and mindfulness in building practices, Richmond has not just voted yes to neighbourliness, but has also done the Earth and environment a great service.

Re: “Get used to that smell,” News, Nov. 25.

I am writing on behalf of a small group of Richmond residents who met on Nov. 25 to discuss what we could do to eliminate the excessive odour problems that a company called Harvest Fraser Richmond Organics, formerly Harvest Power, located at 7028 York Rd. in Richmond, is imposing on residents and businesses in Richmond.

In 2012, Harvest applied for and received a permit from Greater Vancouver Regional District (now Metro Vancouver) Air Quality Management Bylaw 1082,2008. This permit gave Harvest the authority to discharge air contaminants from a composting, anaerobic digester and combined heat and power facility. It’s the largest anaerobic digester in North America.

Since 2012, the residents of Richmond have had to deal with periods of noxious odours wafting from the Harvest site in a 16 km radius, reaching as far as the historic village of Steveston.

On Nov. 18, residents who submitted complaints to Metro Vancouver about the odours emitting from Harvest received a letter notifying us that the company is applying for a renewal of permit GVA1054. They are also applying for authorization to increase their current Volatile Organic Compounds emissions from 22.93

(tonnes per year) to an alarming 245.28 (tonnes/year).

After reviewing the permit GVA1054 issued to Fraser Richmond Soils and Fibre, the legal entity until it became Harvest Fraser Richmond Organics on Sept. 30, 2014, Harvest is currently operating under a temporary approval of GVU1078. We submitted questions about the permit and learned there are on-going problems with Harvest’s operations.

The VOCs emissions are coming mainly from the power plant operation of the facility. Harvest does have a mister to help mask the smell, which sometimes adds to the sour aroma, but it has been observed by Metro Vancouver that it has some operational issues.

Currently, Harvest is processing 190,739 tonnes of food waste a year.

Scott Kerr, from Harvest, says the company does not have an active plan in place for increased volume as the city starts cracking down on those who don’t recycle their food scraps.

We feel that the only way to solve the on-going issues of Harvest Fraser is to request an environmental assessment of their operation to address the significant adverse social, health and environmental effects, taking into account means of preventing and reducing their emissions to an acceptable level.

Property value not enough Dear Editor, I wanted to write a letter about how I liked the idea of a farm market in Steveston Village at the Rod’s Building Supplies site, as suggested in some letters to the editor. I wanted to write about how I thought that a market would fit the character of Steveston Village and how important it was to preserve the uniqueness of this heritage site. But then my attention turned to the discovery that The Cannery Café may be closing its doors. For several years, Sat-

urday morning has been reserved for our five kilometre walk to Steveston Village, which always included breakfast at the Cannery Café. Over time, we recognized many faces at the restaurant, occasionally met up with friends there, got to know the owners, and even Once Upon a Time was filmed there. The Cannery Café is simple, unpretentious, a friendly and relaxing place, a livelihood for a family. For several months we have known that the property was purchased by overseas investors,

but we continued to hope that the negotiations would end favourably. Short of some last minute miracle, it doesn’t appear so. It will be missed. Something with less character and higher profit margins will no doubt replace it.

Regretfully, another step in the slow and insidious disconnect to the community that we called home. Yes, our property value has increased. If only that was enough.

Plenty of free parking in village Dear Editor, Re “Free Parking for Stevestonites,” Letters, Nov. 27.

I have to question exactly how well Ms. Godfrey knows Steveston.

She claims there is “very little free parking.” Really? There is free parking on every side street in the village, the entire length of Chatham St., the entire length of Moncton St. from No. 1 Road to 3rd Avenue. There is a huge free lot across from the community centre. There is also plenty of free parking on streets off Chatham.

There are a handful of pay park-

ing lots, but they’re almost always empty.

Do you know why they’re empty, Ms. Godfrey? It’s because there is so much free parking.

I can only assume your complaint has resulted from you not being able to get a parking spot directly in front of the merchant you wished to visit. You do realize that one can walk anywhere in the village in less than five minutes, don’t you?

It is irresponsible, uneducated letters like this which get read by non-Stevestonites and contributes to the thinking that it’s a hassle

to come to the village. If Ms. Godfrey and others of her ilk had their way, Steveston would revert to the “quaint fishing village” she speaks of. One major problem with that — you wouldn’t have any of your shops and cafes left to visit because they’d all be out of business due to nonsense letters scaring people away.

Contrary to popular belief, Steveston merchants need outside visitors badly to counteract the generally lukewarm support they get from the “locals.”

It’s also assumed here that everybody is abiding by traffic regulations, but we don’t know for sure, what may account for this accident.

It’s a fact of local life that

similar accidents keep happening. In the following week, there were two more such tragedies in other areas of Metro Vancouver.

Given the reality described above, is there any way to prevent such tragedies or accidents from routinely happening?

Dear Editor, “We need your help to understand how the tragedy happened.”

This sincere appeal was printed on a yellow, lettersize paper and posted at the four corner posts of the intersection at Granville Avenue and No. 3 Road.

On Nov. 21, a fine Saturday, a senior-aged lady was struck by a black Volkswagen Golf at around 11:30 a.m.

The car that brought indelibly sad memories to some, stopped right away to assist with the investigation.

So who was at fault?

Senior pedestrians may cross the road when they see the walking sign on the opposite side of the road.

Cars moving in the same direction are permitted to turn the corner when it’s clear. If the driver or the pedestrians are not mindful of each other’s movements, accidents will occur.

In addition, cars can also cross the road diagonally from the opposite side.

Language loophole is ludicrous Dear Editor Re; “Phone line highlights fact some drivers might not read English,” News, Dec. 2.

I was appalled to read that ICBC is prepared to issue BC driver’s licences to persons who are unable to communicate verbally and/or in the written word in English which is one of the two official languages of Canada and the province of British Columbia, the other official language being French.

Mandarin and Cantonese are foreign languages and do not qualify as official languages. However, ICBC accommodates these foreign languages by allowing for interpreters when applications are made for a BC driver’s licences. All registered driving schools must be required to instruct in English and/or French. The current policy is absurd to say the least.

It is well known and documented that the

driving habits in Richmond are terrible and the reason becomes apparent. Many of the current drivers are not qualified to drive. All written road signage is in English only, which means that if a driver is unable to clearly read English how can they respond properly according to the posted signage?

Perhaps they can by having an interpreter in the car at all times?

When it comes to driving through construction zones, the matter becomes far more serious.

How long are the authorities responsible going to allow this senseless procedure to continue? ICBC is a provincial agency that is accountable to all the residents of British Columbia whether they are drivers or not.

Do not let money buy influence.

More incentive to give?

More organizations than ever are doing fundraising. Over the last few years, tax law changes have made it more appealing for us to give to charities. It is therefore no surprise that this month (also the month of Christmas) is the one of most donations in the year.

Statistics Canada says we give $13 billion annually, and 40% of that is given in the last 6 weeks of the year. Donations bring us tax credits. Donating under $200 per year gives a tax credit of 15%, and if it’s over $200 it almost doubles, to 29% (this latter rate is the highest Federal tax rate).

If the Federal Liberals follow through on their campaign promise of raising the top tax bracket rate from 29% to 33%, the question then becomes whether charitable donations above $200 will receive that higher tax credit rate as well. If they do, the incentive for many Canadians (not just “the top 1%”) to donate will increase dramatically. Stay tuned.

According to this newspaper, and quoting from the independent report prepared for the city, Richmond has one of the lowest crime rates in the region. In addition, the report found that Richmond spends $178,940 per officer compared to independent forces in Delta ($188,000) and Abbotsford ($190,000). In terms of per capita costs Richmond saves about 50 per cent under the current arrangement.

The independent report also concludes that additional costs will be incurred on administrative functions. Other costs will be for salaries,benefits,claims and litigation and recruitment.

All of these items are estimated to be higher without the RCMP. The city would also lose the federal subsidy of $4.2 million and have to contract out the integrated investigative services (homicide) and ICARS (traffic fatalities).

You have to ask yourself, does this make any economic sense, and why is it even being considered. It is simply another example of taxpayer dollars being wasted on another grandiose project with no net benefit to the community.

I would recommend that all Richmond taxpayers read the full article regarding this subject in the Dec. 2 issue of the Richmond News.

Dear Editor, Re: “Police transition to cost $20M,” News, Dec. 2.

Another asinine idea hatched by the brain trust at city hall.

When asked why Richmond needs its own police force Mayor Brodie did not have any definitive answers or reasons. Most of his answers were in the abstract.

To quote the story, “issues with the Richmond RCMP were mostly at the higher levels and did not have to do with any particular problems on the ground with officers.”

Apparently the city (mayor and council) wants more control over all aspects of policing. I did not realize until just now that this mayor and council had previous experience in managing a police force. If you have a problem with the “higher levels” sit down with them and discuss the issues and come to an amicable arrangement instead of wasting millions of taxpayer dollars.

We all know that the $20 million in transition costs will at least double. In addition to this, it is estimated that the municipal force will cost seven per cent or $3 million per year more to operate. And more good news for taxpayers — this all translates into an estimated 1.5 per cent increase in property taxes.

Of course all of these numbers will increase on an annual basis because of any number of bogus excuses emanating from city hall.

Slow going for Dinsmore traffic Murderer’s parole set at 17 years T

he City of Richmond is advising motorists to expect some possible traffic congestion around the southern approaches to the Dinsmore Bridge on Gilbert Road and on surrounding roadways over the coming months.

Occasional lane closures associated to a number of residential and commercial projects under construction in the area, along with ongoing upgrades of municipal and regional utilities will create some traffic delays.

Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians may wish to consider alternate routes, including the No. 2 Road Bridge for north-south traffic and Westminster Highway for east-west traffic.

Various construction activities are ongoing along Gilbert Road, between Elmbridge Way and River Road.

While the current standard of single lane traffic in each direction will be maintained, motorists may encounter some traffic congestion due to the roadside construction.

Additional construction activity is underway on Lansdowne Road between Hollybridge Way and Gilbert Road now through Dec. 18, from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Saturdays.

A minimum of single-lane eastbound on Lansdowne Road will be maintained at all times during construction hours, westbound lanes will be closed at Hollybridge Way. Access to the Richmond Curling Club will be maintained at all times.

Intermittent construction activity is scheduled for December from 7 a.m. - 4

p.m. on Elmbridge Way between Hollybridge Way and Gilbert Road. A minimum of single lane westbound on Elmbridge Way will be maintained at all times during construction hours. Eastbound lanes will be unaffected.

Regional sewer main replacement work

by Metro Vancouver is continuing on Hollybridge Way, between River Road and Elmbridge Way, which will lead to full road closures and/or alternating lane closures through December.

Over the next few months, a variety of projects will also impact other segments of River Road, Gilbert Road, Elmbridge Way, Alderbridge Way and Lansdowne Road, all within the same general area.

These projects will include a number of traffic interruptions including some full closures and/or lane closures.

While some of these projects have been underway for months, activity will intensify over the coming months and some projects will overlap.

At all times, access to and from the Richmond Olympic Oval from both the east and west will be maintained.

Motorists and others are also advised to pay extra attention to special directional signage posted in the area, which will keep them apprised of any changes to normal traffic patterns.

Motorists are also reminded to respect flag persons’ directions and drive with care through construction zones.

A

Chinese man who beat his mother to death with a hammer and then disposed of her body in a suitcase will have to spend 17 years in jail before he can apply for parole.

Last month Yuan Xi William Tang, 28, was found guilty of the June 2012 second-degree murder of Lianjie Guo, 47.

Second-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison with no parole eligibility of between 10 and 25 years.

The only issue in sentencing Tang was his parole ineligibility period.

In imposing the life sentence with no parole for 17 years, B.C. Supreme Court Justice William Ehrcke found Tang’s expressions of remorse to the court rang “hollow” when contrasted with the attitude he displayed during his confession to the undercover police officers.

The judge said it was apparent to anyone watching the video of the

confession that Tang was “gleeful and flippant” about the death of his mother.

He said the brutal nature of the attack would have resulted in “prolonged terror and suffering” for the mom.

The judge described the treatment of the body as a “defilement” and found that he threw the suitcase with her body inside into the Fraser River with the intention that the body would never be found.

Tang told undercover police posing as gangsters that he resented the amount of control his mother exerted over him, including forcing him to break up with his girlfriend in China. His parents forced him to come to Canada and study; at the time of the slaying, he was living in Richmond.

Tang confessed to the crime after undercover cops showed him photos of his mother’s body in the suitcase, which had been recovered from a beach near Powell River seven weeks after the murder.

played for the jury, Tang said he used a hammer to strike his mom once over the head. When he saw that she was still struggling, he tried to smother her by putting some bedding over her head.

Then he struck her two more times in the head, fracturing her skull.

He placed the body in a suitcase and then took the suitcase and the murder weapon to the No. 2 Road Bridge in Richmond. He threw the hammer into the Fraser River from the middle of the bridge and then waded into the water from underneath the bridge and pushed the suitcase out into the water.

After the murder, Tang lied to his father and to police and filed a missing person’s report.

The verdict by the jury came after 11 days of deliberations.

The issue at trial was whether he was guilty as charged of first-degree murder, which requires planning and deliberation, or guilty of second-degree murder as his lawyer claimed.

In 1959, Queen Elisabeth opened the George Massey Tunnel – originally called the Deas Island Tunnel – to overwhelming support. The 629-metre long tunnel was considered an engineering marvel and was the first project in North America to use immersed tube technology. Originally a tolled crossing, tolls were removed in 1964 when the majority of the tunnel’s construction costs had been repaid. George Massey – an Irish immigrant who arrived to Canada in the 1930s and invested his own time, energy, and money into making an improved south Fraser crossing a reality – himself paid the last toll. Today, the George Massey Tunnel is a key component of the regional and provincial transportation system, carrying more than 80,000 vehicles each day. In response to growing concerns about the impact of congestion, and recognizing that the existing tunnel is about 10 years of useful life remaining, the Province of B.C has committed to constructing a replacement. Currently the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project is underway; subject to environmental review, construction is expected to begin in 2017, to ensure Highway 99 continues to meet the growing needs of communities, businesses and stakeholders that rely on this crossing.

ichmond Mounties are investigating a report of shots heard during the day on Tuesday in the area of Cambie and Shell roads.

Shortly before 1 p.m. on Dec. 1, Richmond RCMP responded to the area to investigate a report of two males sitting in an open area northeast of the inter-

section.

A dark coloured vehicle reportedly drove toward the males and shots were heard. Both males and the vehicle fled the scene in different directions.

Multiple officers swarmed the area and combed the scene along with a K9 unit from the Police Dog Service.

Police are still searching for any alleged victims or suspects.

“We have several potential witnesses to speak to.

This investigation is in the very early stages,” said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

any companies wax lyrical about being in the “people business.”

Few, however, can actually back that up without noticing their bank balance swelling into the millions, if not billions of dollars.

At the Fair Trade Fair at the Gilmore Park United Church on Saturday, you will see around 15 non-profit vendors, all of which expressly put people before profit in a bid to raise the standard of living in Third World countries.

One such vendor will be Ten Thousand Villages, which will have on sale Christmas-themed crafts from places such as Bangladesh.

“We will have hand-made paper products from Bangladesh, as well as garlands and cards,” said Roxanne Cave, manager of Ten Thousand Villages on Granville Island, a fair trade store, which buys directly from small, artisan groups around the world.

“We try to preserve their culture as much as possible, but we recognize it needs to be marketable in North America and it’s very important to us that the environment is protected at the same time.”

Cave said Ten Thousand Villages is akin to a “mini-department store, with home décor, personal accessories and gift items.”

“We’re also the go-to store for Christmas ornaments; we have a fabulous collection this year. There will also be coffee, tea and chocolate.”

Rev. Tim Le Drew, a member of the Richmond Kairos Committee (an interchurch social justice group), sponsors the annual fair.

“We’re hoping to have around 15 vendors with textiles and crafts, all made by people in Third World countries,” he said.

“All of the goods that are for sale are crafted by people who live in various parts of the world and are assured of a fair price for what they have made.”

This year’s fair will be on Saturday, Dec. 5 at Gilmore Park United Church, running from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

tunned and embarrassed by some of the bile being directed at Muslims in Canada following the Paris terrorist attacks, a group of Richmond students is fighting back.

The Kwantlen Polytechnic University criminology students were so aghast at the hatred being spewed towards innocent Canadians and new immigrants that they decided to do their little bit to restore faith in outsiders’ views of their country.

As of now, the 28-strong class and their professor, Wade Deisman, are asking the Richmond public to help them with a “welcome letter campaign” for all the Syrian refugees that will soon be calling B.C. home.

The group hopes the words of warmth will go a little way to tempering any anger or displeasure the new immigrants may feel when they arrive in Canada early in 2016.

“We watched what was happening with the Syrian refugees, getting accepted into Canada, but then saw some of the reaction across the country and decided

The group is hoping to work with the Muslim Friendship Centre in Surrey, where they will pass on the vetted letters.

hild wrangler comes first on Aviva Levin’s resume. Her start in the working world came at Gateway Theatre, where her job was to keep the orphans of Oliver in check.

As good as she was supervising small stage stars, child wrangling wasn’t her calling. It was teaching. Her parents, so they say, knew all along.

“They have stories of me lining up my stuffed animals and teaching them,” said Levin, a teacher at Steveston-London Secondary, during a break after school. “I don’t have any recollection of this, but apparently it was in my blood.”

Evidence emerged after university, when she moved the rest of her belongings to her Richmond condo. She unearthed a small grade book in which she recorded the attendance and performance of stuffed animals like Teddy and Lamb.

Levin, a 29-year-old lifelong Richmond resident, teaches high school French and social studies from her Williams Road classroom,

at a desk decorated by a globe, a dictionaryturned-laptop-stand and a mug that cries “COFFEE.” She said her own teachers, at Diefenbaker elementary and R.A. McMath secondary, had a positive impact on her life.

“I had some very, very inspiring teachers growing up in Richmond,” she said. “I’m passionate about the things that I teach. I love French, I love history. I’m happy to talk about either for as much as the kids will let me.”

Outside the classroom Levin is co-director of the school play. Outside the school she’s co-captain of Tickle Me Pickle, a longrunning improvisation group that each year produces a handful of improv shows at Richmond Cultural Centre. Levin joined in 2002 as a 15-year-old.

What began as a youth group is now a collection of polished performers who deliver hilarious improv shows in the spirit of the TV series Who’s Line is it Anyway? Picklers work with audience suggestions to produce improv games and long-form stories, in which a single suggestion might keep the actors busy for an hour.

oad safety issues are seasonal. In mid- to late fall, three topics always invite a re-visit and journalists who focus on driving and safety invariably dig up the latest research on them.

The second topic is the seasonal increase in impaired driving checkpoints. As a result, ‘tis the season for reminding drivers impaired by alcohol, apart from the havoc they may wreak, to expect legal consequences—in BC: vehicle impoundment, license suspension, and criminal charges for blowing over .08. But as drug impaired driving charges continue to rise, and, likewise, drug mixed with alcohol impaired driving charges, ‘tis also the season for alerting drug-using drivers to take less comfort in drug detection testing being more difficult and less precise. Change is on the way.

The first is clock optimization and its effect on road safety. The return to standard time on the first Sunday in November provides everyone with the luxury of an extra hour of sleep but at the cost of reduced visibility at the end of the day. Ongoing debate concerns the risk from reduced visibility from the night-time early darkness in standard time compared to that from sleep deprivation and high rates of vehicle usage with daylight saving time in the spring and summer months.

Earlier this year, police in the UK began using reasonably affordable roadside ‘drugalysers’—an oral swab test—for detecting eight popular over-the-counter drugs, and the eight top-used recreational illegal drugs.

The former are clonazepam, diazepam, flunitrazepam, lorazepam, methadone, morphine, oxazepam and temazepam; the latter: cocaine, benzoylecgonine, cannabis, ketamine, LSD, MDMA/ecstasy, amphetamine and heroin.

The latest studies from both Britain and the US indicate that daylight savings time may, in fact, be a ‘lifesaver.’ In Britain, for example, the return to standard time means that schoolchildren are returning home in the dark. The steady trend of a noticeable spiking in child pedestrian fatalities just after 4 pm at this time of year, along with a 37 percent increase in the number of accidents involving all pedestrians in the evening over the morning has prompted Smart-Witness, a British motor safety company to contend that, “stopping the clocks going back … could save hundreds of children’s lives.”

Another takeaway from this, however, is better awareness that the increasing darkness of day’s end considerably reduces driver and pedestrian reaction times.

In the fall and winter, walking or driving

The third topic is vehicle equipment for winter-driving and winter-driving safety tips. Even in the relatively weather Vancouver, snow tires are highly recommended; and for snow sports enthusiasts—a must. But remember they are minimally helpful on black ice, which usually forms first on bridges and elevated roadways. Test for black ice by looking for water spray from the tires of vehicles around you. If the temperature is below freezing and you can’t see any spray, you’re likely on black ice, which means any sudden steering adjustment or braking can cause loss of control. The basics: allow more time, stay further back, and slow down to avoid overdriving your lights.

“At the end of it we were stunned, the audience was stunned. There was this moment of: Oh my god, we just did this. And the audience went wild,” smiled Levin. “This isn’t something I could have written if I had sat down at a computer for three months. But all of us worked together to make this happen.”

In real life, Levin recently got engaged. She met her fiancé in high school and reconnected with him five years ago at a friend’s

wedding. The proposal came in Avignon, France—without certain traditions.

“No knee and no asking my dad, who insisted he didn’t want any goats in exchange for me. I appreciated that,” she laughed.

Her parents might have something to do with Levin’s sense of humour, but she also pointed to something else.

“I was terribly shy as a kid. I realized I had maybe a more quirky way of looking at the world, and if I voiced that, then I had a connection with other people. It was a way of almost bringing me out of my shell.”

Before completing her degree in education, Levin finished one in history and religious studies. All those textbooks didn’t turn her off of reading. On a day off she’s likely curled up with a cup of tea reading a book — highbrow literature, a trashy sci-fi paperback — anything with a compelling story.

Non-fiction too. A friend still teases her about reading a book about salt and a subsequent urge to share sodium trivia. (“Did you know salary comes from salt, which is salt, because Roman soldiers were paid in salt? That’s how we get salary. It used to be a currency.”)

hen you think about the work of your family physician, you probably envision the one-on-one care he or she gives to each individual patient. It may be in a clinic, hospital or – more rarely – home visit.

That still remains the priority of virtually every family physician: the wellbeing of every patient in his or her practice, but you might be surprised to hear that the circle of care is expanding. More physicians in our community care about the health of the entire community.

The Burnaby Division of Family Practice is a non-profit organization founded in 2011 and funded by the General Practices Services Committee. Its members are the family physicians who serve our community.

With the other founding board members, I wrote our organization’s vision and mission statements. Our vision for the Burnaby community: patients and physicians achieving health and happiness. Our mission: to engage, support and mobilize family physicians in co-creating a network that will support the wellbeing of all members of the Burnaby community.

Although I’ve recently stepped down from the board of directors, I continue to lead the Burnaby Division’s Empowering Patients public health education program. Recognizing that the public receives confusing and often incorrect medical information from the media, we sought to provide unbiased information Our vision is that by raising general health literacy (public knowledge about healthy living and how best to use the healthcare system), we can improve the health of our community.

We may be able to reduce the burden of chronic disease in the future.

Since we started the public education program in October 2014, we’ve delivered 11 public presentations in our community’s libraries, schools and community centres. The topics have included healthy eating, healthy relationships, emotional wellness, healthy physical activity, patient-doctor communication, making the most of your hospital stay, medical ethics and common chronic health conditions, such as diabetes.

I’ll be speaking on “Making Sense of Symptoms and Screening Tests” on Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. at the McGill Library on 4595 Albert Street in Burnaby. Growing up in North Burnaby, this was my “home library” close to the Eileen Dailly Pool and the Confederation Community Centre.

I’ll go over the “review of systems”, the questions that physicians include in a complete physical examination.

Because no one gets routine physicals anymore, most people are never asked these questions about the symptoms that may indicate important medical conditions.

When patients receive episodic care at drop-in clinics, they may not be aware of what tests they should be having and when. For this reason, I’ll also review the key screening tests that are recommended at different ages.

ancouver Airport is hosting its fifth annual YVR Holiday Hamper Drive on Tuesday, Dec. 8 and it’s shaping up to be their biggest to date.

The drive, which gathers supplies for Quest Food Exchange, has grown over the years, with thousands of airport employees chipping in with complete Christmas meals for families in need.

However, this year, explained YVR spokesperson Alana Lawrence, in advance of the drive, the airport has reached out to the Richmond community at large in a bid to hit the 600-hamper mark, 100 more than the previous year.

“Last year, we expanded the drive to the Sea Island community, but this time we’ve expanded that push into the wider Richmond community to involve as many

For every hamper donated, the airport will donate one turkey to complete the dinner.

anukkah is a wonderful celebration that has captured the attention and imagination of more Jews than any other Jewish celebration of the year.

Historically, Hanukkah celebrates the re-taking of Jerusalem from Syrian control and the ancient Temple from the hands of a priestly aristocracy committed to Hellenizing Jewish ritual.

All of this by a small band of Jewish traditionalists known as the “Maccabees.”

According to ancient tradition, the first act in re-claiming the Temple was to re-kindle the seven-branch menorah.

Unfortunately, the Maccabees discovered there was only enough oil for one night. The miracle of Hanukkah was the oil lasting for eight days, giving way to the current eight-day celebration.

Beginning Sunday evening, Dec. 6, the first candle of Hanukkah will be lit in Jew-

ish homes worldwide.

Then, for each of the next eight evenings, an additional candle will be lit. The holiday will culminate with the lighting of eight candles on the evening of Dec. 13.

The lighting of candles is accompanied by songs and Hanukkah goodies such as sufganiyot (jelly-filled donuts).

Hanukkah, also referred to as the “Festival Of Lights,” is more than just a story or great victory. The word “Hanukkah” means dedication.

The Maccabees’ fight was not just against a foreign army, but a dedication to religious freedom. This celebration of “Light” stands in marked contrast to the looming darkness that threatens those who don’t conform to the religious beliefs or practices of others. Though Hanukkah is particularly Jewish, its message is universal.

One of the scriptural readings during Hanukkah is taken from the book of Zechariah, who writes, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit alone, says God, shall all people live in peace.”

Dawar also wants people to get out of their cars. While 70 per cent of residents agreed that community amenities are within walking or cycling distance of their homes, only 12 per cent do just that.

As well, 64 per cent of Richmondites commute to work by car, whereas the regional average is 55 per cent.

“This is a huge disconnect that we need to bridge,” said Dawar.

“I love the Canada Line, I wish it was extended more,” she noted.

a sense of disconnectedness in the city, a fact that has been shown in several other Richmond health surveys.

Immigration is an obvious factor, said Carpiano. “You’ve got people moving in, new residents that are transplants — so establishing those sorts of ties in a community is a very important thing. You also have a very diverse community where, in some cases, there are language barriers that can provide obstacles,” he said.

Since 1981, Richmond has lost roughly 22,000 Caucasian residents while it’s gained about 85,000 Chinese people. Meanwhile, its South Asian population has grown proportionately to population growth. Now, one in six Richmondites are born outside of Canada, making it one of the biggest ethnic enclaves in the country.

“Urban communities tend to have a lower sense of community connections and, of course, immigrants tend to be less connected,” noted Dawar.

Still, the impact of such unprecedented change on established residents should not be lost, added Carpiano.

“Then you’ve got people moving out, which poses implications for the longer-term residents and their connections,” said Carpiano.

ther demographic factors are at play as well, such as Richmond’s ageing population. Whereas in 2011, about 14 per cent of Richmond was over 65 years of age, in 2041 seniors will account for about 26 per cent of the city. Carpiano noted seniors are an at-risk group for isolation and/or having mental health issues.

As well, young people and young families

who are feeling mounting financial burdens are also at a stage in life where depression can be found, said Carpiano.

Another shift in demographics that may be affecting connectivity is housing density.

During the past 10 years, Richmond has added on average 1,170 new apartments and townhouses annually while its single-family housing stock has seen little change.

Carpiano and Dawar both note that such accommodation lends itself to fewer community connections.

o, Richmond does have an interesting pool of different groups that are at different stages of life or with different sets of social circumstances where they’re placed at risk for factors that could be undermining their mental health,” said Carpiano.

He noted that while changes might not “gel” with everyone, these “growing pains” can be overcome.

The Richmond News asked Richmond city councillors for their thoughts on the survey.

Three councillors responded.

Coun. Bill McNulty said he would take the results “with a grain of salt” as he believes Richmond to be a very healthy community.

However, he added, “It’s a red flag and it’s an opportunity to shore up our weaknesses.”

Coun. Carol Day said the rate of changes has meant some people losing their sense of community.

Coun. Alexa Loo said “connectedness comes from creating spaces for people to get together and interact. …Creating bylaws and rules about whether you have a tree or a fence does not create community and connectedness.”

I

f any department store had a trial by fire for employees, it was Woodward’s. It came in the form of $1.49 Day. The late great Western Canadian shopping destination helped give birth to Lansdowne Centre mall when it opened in 1977, and former employee Michele Adshead remembers the madness of Woodward’s monthly $1.49 Day sale, where oodles of items were offered at one low price.

“You learned really quickly never to look past the third person in line so you didn’t get overwhelmed. The days always flew by,” said Adshead, who worked as a cashier at the Richmond store in the early 1980s. “I still remember the commercials on the radio and the jingle they always played.” The store was a fixture in Richmond until 1993, when financial troubles forced its sale to the Hudson’s Bay Company. The Lansdowne space was taken over by Zellers and Safeway—neither of which lasted.

Adshead said she never lost the people skills and work ethic she developed at Woodward’s.

“I’ve run into quite a few people that I worked with during the Woodward›s days.

Everyone had enjoyed working there and

missed the store,” she said. “It was a great place to work and I was always glad that I (had the opportunity).”

Charles Woodward opened his first store in 1892 in Downtown Vancouver, according to the Woodpens Club, a group of former employees. The brand grew in B.C. and Alberta, and expanded to Richmond in 1977.

It was Sept. 14 of that year when Lansdowne Park — as it was known then, a nod to the land’s racetrack past—opened.

Woodward’s took its place on the mall’s west side, as did its famous food floor. The mall also opened with the chain’s discount outlet, known then as Woodward’s Bargain Store.

“We’ve got a style for you, a smile for you and the most beautiful store filled with exciting new merchandise. Woodward’s Lansdowne is a complete department store with everything you can think of for yourself, your family and your home,” touted a 20-page newspaper supplement promoting the mall’s opening.

Woodward’s invited both “discriminating gentlemen and dudes” to its men’s shop, according to the ad, while “fashion conscious” women were targets of its “ladies’ shop.”

The Woodward’s Food Floor was a fullservice grocery store that promised “a whole new adventure in food shopping with some terrific buys.” Food could also be found within the department store’s full-service

Bruce Beattie remembers working in sales at the Richmond store in the late ’70s. He sold cameras — mostly Polaroid models in those days — in a department stationed at the bottom of an escalator.

“I rescued many a small child who would get their clothes stuck in the escalator. Hit emergency stop — instant hero,” said Beattie.

Peter McIlwee was Lansdowne Woodward’s store manager in the 1980s, overseeing more than 700 employees. The Lansdowne location was always successful, he said, and became one of the top producing stores in the 26-store chain.

McIlwee started his 38-year career with the retailer as a valet at the downtown store’s parking garage. Soon he was working fulltime in the paint department’s stockroom, and later, the sales floor. He continued to climb the Woodward’s employment ladder

and in 1983 became manager at Lansdowne, where he stayed until he retired in 1990.

“The thing I most enjoyed about my career with Woodward’s was the great team atmosphere that was prevalent in all locations and the great people that I had the pleasure to work with,” he told the Richmond News.

“Many lifelong friendships were made and still exist to this day.”

Former customers also have fond memories. Employees had a role in that, according to McIlwee.

“Woodward’s was a family store managed by the Woodward family and provided the best possible working conditions and benefits that were second to none in the retail industry to all employees.”

Fond memories might also have to do with that famous monthly sale and its catchy advertising jingle: “$1.49 Day, Woodward’s. $1.49 Day, Tuesday.”

The Canadian people and the media are cheered by pictures of the most inclusive Cabinet ever.

The return of the long-form census was the fastest public policy reversal in Canadian history. Minister Bains must have been texting Statistics Canada on his cellphone during the swearing-in ceremony.

It’s customary now, when everything is going so well, for an economist to come in and rain on the parade. There are tough decisions ahead.

The outlook for the Canadian economy has darkened. The recession is old news by now, and we expect modest (one per cent) growth to return in the second half of 2015. But, the International Monetary Fund has again revised down its outlook for the global economy, mainly because of weakness in China.

The Canadian Chamber’s outlook for oil and commodity prices has also been revised lower.

All this is coming amid CMHC’s warnings of over valuation in Canadian housing markets.

The Parliamentary Budget Ofbce now projects larger debcits, $3 billion next year and almost $5 billion in 2017. This is before the government has spent a penny on additional infrastructure.

This means there are tough decisions on the horizon. On taxes, the

Prime Minister’s mandate letter to Finance contains straightforward instructions such as implementing the middle class tax cut (lowering the rate on income of $44,700 to $90,000 from 22 per cent to 20.5 per cent) and cancelling income splitting for families.

However, there are also tough policy choices such as reducing “wasteful” tax expenditures and enhancing the Canada Pension Plan (CPP).

At the Canadian Chamber, we are focused on the promise to enhance the CPP because it could be damaging to business. The contribution already is 9.9 per cent on earnings, split equally between employee and employer, and must be paid regardless of whether a business is aush with probts or on the verge of bank-

ruptcy. The government will also have to convince all the provinces to buy into the plan. This is a very tall order.

The government has also announced a “fresh start” on energy after the rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline. Minister Stéphane Dion promised to put in place sufbciently rigorous environmental assessments and enough clean-energy investment to restore Canada’s image, “then our product will be welcome everywhere.”

A credible plan to reduce carbon emissions is undoubtedly of great benebt to Canada and is fully supported by the Canadian Chamber.

It may also be true that the Harper government mishandled Keystone XL so that it became a victim of the Conservatives’ environmental record. But is the purpose of

environmental policy to impress foreign countries and make them pat us on the back?

What do we do if the U.S. or the Europeans are not sufbciently pleased? Back to the drawing board?

With a weak economy and rising debcits, the government has less room to maneuver. That’s why it’s critical that infrastructure spending be targeted at the trade-enabling investments that improve our competitiveness.

That’s also why the CPP enhancement and the plan to reduce carbon emissions must be sound public policy choices that are not burdensome for business.

In addition to easing the burden on the environment that could represent, Holgate said it could also take the weight off a collective conscience since some precious metals are mined in notable conflict areas.

“We don’t need these mines in developing countries with shady characters because there’s enough metal dug out of the ground already. It’s all here,” Holgate said.

And that’s only the cellphone market. Add in computers, solar panels and fibre optic cables and the resources that can be harvested and recycled grows even more, Holgate said.

So then, there’s a good supply of recovered materials.

Are there buyers?

Right now, some of the pure metals to be collected in Ronin8’s Richmond plant will be sent to the Royal Canadian Mint.

“They take our gold, platinum and palladium. They are our channel partner for the noble metals. And we have brokers for the copper, silver and nickel mix,” Holgate said.

“And the non-metal fraction we produce — the polymers — are currently going into a race track being built in Osoyoos, as well as things like new roofing materials.”

When there is a sufficiently larger supply of recycled goods using his company’s process Holgate expects it will draw the interest of the large electronics manufacturers.

To get to that point, a number of much larger, 100,000-square-foot sites that can handle 12,000 tons of material annually will be needed, and Ronin8 has plans to build one in Williams Lake.

In comparison, the Richmond facility is expected to have a capacity of about one ton a day.

It may take a while — perhaps longer than the 24 months Holgate estimates — but the lustre of achieving a net stream of recycled materials to feed new manufactured electronics could be significant.

“Imagine the marketing draw a Dell or an Apple would have when they say their new computer is made entirely from recycled materials?” Holgate said.

ikram Vij has a passion for the food he creates.

It also happens to be a business — a successful one — which has vaulted him into celebrity chef status.

But the lines between passion and hardlined business are blurred for him.

One follows another, and he has found a recipe which blends the two together.

That, and much more will be part of the unique From the Kitchen to the Boardroom event where Vij, along with three other wellknown Vancouver chefs — Brett Turner from Droski Turner Hospitality Management, Jackie Kia Ellis from Beaucoup Bakery, and Quang Dang from West — will be the featured guests Jan. 28 at the River Rock Casino Resort.

Hosted by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce and the Richmond News, it’s billed as a dining experience with a forum focused on food, business and entrepreneurship in Metro Vancouver’s food industry.

It’s an event Vij said he is looking forward to, partly because it brings him back to his Richmond roots. It’s where his parents still live today after they moved from India to join him back in 1994, just as he was starting his rise in the Vancouver restaurant scene.

“My parents believed in Richmond as a multicultural community,” Vij said when the News interviewed him at his offices in Van-

couver last week. “I’ve always loved it there, too.

“It makes me think about those humble days, and to go back to Richmond to cook with my peers — great, well-known chefs — and showcase what Richmond means to me. Yes, we can talk about Vancouver, but Richmond has so much to offer.”

Growing up, Vij tempered his mother’s passion for food with a strong business sense from his father who was a successful clothier in India. “So, I knew how to wheel and deal, push the right buttons and find my own niche,” he said.

“My father was successful because he took the extra step to make that stitch that much better than someone else’s. It’s the same thing I do with cooking,” Vij said. “A lot of people cook Indian food. But how the food is presented, the ambience, the feeling that you get when someone holds your hand and says, ‘Trust me you’ll be fine, just taste my food.’

That grandmotherly loves comes naturally and you share it with your guests. That’s what makes a difference. It’s not all just business.

It’s very much also the passion and the love of the country and the cuisine.”

During the event at the River Rock, Vij said he plans to get across the message that goals are achievable if you manage the drive for what you do with a real world sensibility.

It’s something many of us take for granted until crippling pain strikes: our own mobility. Walking, running or the simple ability to move can become impossible. Dr. Fay Leung is a Richmond Hospital-based orthopedic surgeon, who performs highly specialized minimally invasive procedures for shoulders, knees and in particular hip, some of which she performed at UBC Hospital because they had the equipment that they had. She is one of only four surgeons in the province providing these super-specialized surgeries to treat pre-arthritic hip conditions to improve mobility and prevent disability.

She completed her residency 2009, followed by a fellowship in 2010 and has been here at Richmond Hospital ever since working with our other orthopedic surgeons. She is a talented and passionate surgeon who is dedicated to helping patients maintain their mobility and live pain-free. The hip patients I see are generally active and range from people who are in their 20s and 30s to people who are older and working.

“Many people are born with an anatomic difference in the shape of

their hip joint. Sometimes a ball-socket mismatch in the hip can cause pain and wear and tear in the hip.

Dr. Fay Leung is a highly specialized orthopedic surgeon at Richmond Hospital.

Some people may have had a traumatic injury while some people have a disorder that causes the condition.

“One patient of mine was a woman with a ball-socket mismatch. Within the space of a year she went from having some mild hip pain to being virtually unable to walk. The first time she came into my office, she was using crutches to walk because she was in so much pain. I was really worried about her.

“But two weeks after her surgery, she was already walking without any assistance and without a limp.

She went on to bike, hike and even do some running. It was a dramatic change.

“The surgery I perform is very technically challenging and demanding. It requires lots of skill and the right medical equipment. But when I see people able to get back to life and carry on, it’s very gratifying.

I’m grateful to donors for helping to fund much needed equipment for the procedures I perform.”

In the automotive world, Land Rovers are boxy and inspired by straight, military lines — one look at a Land Rover Defender will put you in the picture.

Well, that sort of all came to an end a few years ago when the LR4 developed a few curvy bits here and there and dropped the Discovery name from its mid-sized SUV. But now, the nameplate is coming back, albeit in a new, smaller model called the Discovery Sport.

And guess what?

It’s got even more rounded corners.

Rumoured to replace the uninspired moniker for the LR2 (it was much better dubbed the Freelander in Europe) the new Discovery Sport is not simply a clone of the Range Rover Evoque.

You know the old “shell game” manufacturers pull when they make more body shells than they can sell of a new product and then

attempt to get rid of them by rebranding them as a slightly disguised version of the original vehicle.

No, there are some major differences to the Evoque and Discovery Sport which share the same, muchrevered manufacturer that is the choice of British Royalty and the SAS (Special Air Service), an elite group of British commandos.

And those differences come in the area of exterior and interior styling while under the sheet metal they share the same engine, a 2.0-litre turbocharged, fourcylinder that turns out 240 horsepower and 250 pound feet of torque, and transmission, a nine-speed automatic that distributes power to an all-wheel drive system.

Race walker Evan Dunfee isn’t one to rest on his laurels.

For the 25-year-old, 2015 has brought new levels of success. In July, he produced a big upset in winning gold in the Pan-American Games in Toronto in the 20km event. In August, he finished 12th in both the 20km and 50km races at the World Athletics Championships in Beijing. Looking ahead to the 2016 Rio Olympics, Dunfee will try and build on his success, fighting for a spot on the podium.

lot has happened since I last wrote. Coming off an uninteresting offseason, I hit the ground running (well, walking) in November.

My first big move towards Rio was to hop on a plane to the other side of the world, where I’m currently writing from the future, in Canberra, Australia.

Canberra is home to the Australian Institute of Sport, where the world leading sport science research occurs and for the nerd in me, it’s my Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory.

Many scientists have been purporting this diet to be the only way for elite endurance athletes to succeed, without ever actually testing it on elite athletes.

With a normal diet, during intense activity, your body consumes carbohydrates (sugars) to make energy, the body’s storage is limited however and when you run out you have to slow down and switch to burning fat (which takes longer to convert to energy). This is the classic “wall” marathon runners will be familiar with.

Consuming carbs during activity is one way to get around the body’s limited storage capacity. For example, during my 50km at the World Championships I consumed 300g of carbs (1,200kcal) in gels, gummies and sports drinks.

The idea behind the high-fat diet is to force your body to adapt and learn to use fats more efficiently to make energy, hopefully fast enough to continue working at the same intensity you would with carbs, without worrying about running out of fuel (even I have 70,000kcal worth of fat).

My diet is 80 per cent fat and 20 per cent protein, with only 30g of carbs per day.

After two weeks on the diet, I am starting to feel

some adaptation and I’m getting through my long training quite well. In a 10-day span, I put in four 40km-plus days of training and logged 300 km.

Conversely, my speed training hasn’t been as good as normal. Therefore, it’s too early to evaluate whether I think this would be an effective diet for me.

Regardless, I am very happy with how training has been going so early in the season!

With one week left on the diet, you’ll have to wait until my next column to find out how it finished off.

To end, I want to touch on the camaraderie within race walk.

By far the thing I love most about my event are the other athletes involved.

The willingness of athletes from different countries to collaborate hasn’t only led to lifelong friendships, but has made me an immeasurably better athlete.

This is abundantly clear with this study, where athletes from five continents have come together to push each other and help progress scientific knowledge.

This camaraderie is something I will cherish and carry with me for the rest of my life.

Little did Bianca Go know a demonstration that piqued her interest at a Chinese New Year’s celebration would have her traveling the world years later.

The 16-year-old Grade 11 student at Steveston-London Secondary School has established herself as one of the country’s best at Wushu — a modern exhibition of traditional martial arts.

Go thrives in the Taolu (forms) discipline and double straight sword is her speciality. She proved that by using her impressive athleticism and flexibility to place fifth in her debut at the recent 13th World Wushu Championships in Indonesia.

Now, Go is back home training for her next big event - the Canadian Junior Nationals in Toronto come February. If she does the expected, she will also be representing her Canada again at the Junior Worlds late next year.

“I started about five-and-half years ago, but it’s been only the last couple of the years where I have been training a lot more,” said Go who works with her coach Wang Heng at least four times a week with Pacific Wushu, based out of Richmond Sports and Fitness, located on No. 5 Road.

“I would best describe Wushu as a modern martial art where you learn and

perform routines. What I like about it is there are so many options — hand form, straight sword and double straight sword. It also helps me with balance (in my life) between physical activity and school.”

Go didn’t know what to expect at Worlds. Her spot on the Canadian team wasn’t secured until late August at trials back in Ontario.

She would be the second youngest to earn a spot on the team.

She spent about 10 days at the championships, adjusting to a significant change in the time of day and climate.

“It was an amazing experience,” she continued. “It was really hot, over 30C everyday, and we were training outside so that took some getting used to. Then there was the jet lag too.”

The leading medal winners reflect Wushu’s worldwide popularity with China, Indonesia, Iran, Hong Kong and Russia at the top of the standings.

Go’s competition schedule is quite hectic but she wants to take advantage of her final year of eligibility to compete at Junior Worlds for the first time. That event will take place in Myanmar.

She will also have the opportunity to compete at the senior level too in 2016 at the Pan American Wushu Championships, slated for next summer in Texas.

“The more competitions, the more time I’m here,” laughed Go, about to start her two-hour training session.

Wild card process sends more skaters to Challenge The route took a little longer than expected, but the Connaught Skating Club contingent headed to this week’s 2016 Skate Canada Challenge in Edmonton has grown by three.

Elvie Carroll, Ehren Chang and Beres Clements have all been granted wild card spots based on their technical scores at last month’s B.C. Yukon Sectional Championships. The new entry route was implied by Skate Canada this season to provide a better representation at Challenge and not put so much emphasis on one event.

For the Connaught trio, the new life in their competitive season means an opportunity to get to next month’s Canadian Championships is now well within reach as the top 18 advance. All three came agonizing close to making the provincial team.

“I’m super excited. We pretty much train the entire year for this,” smiled Chang, who was fifth at Sectionals in his debut at the Novice level. “I’ve never been to nationals and that is the goal now.”

“This is a second chance to get to go with my friends and represent B.C.,” she said. “I didn’t have my best skate at Challenge last year and my goal is to improve on that.”

Clements finished right behind Chang in the Novice Men’s competition, placing sixth.

Connaught Director of Programs Keegan Murphy was cautiously optimistic all three of his skaters were going to Challenge but there were was still an awkward period where their status was limbo as results were finalized in other provinces.

“At first, we pretended all three were not going because we didn’t want there to be a huge disappointment,” said Murphy. “The standard in B.C. is very high compared to the rest of Canasa so we knew with a little bit of luck we had a shot.

“They skated 80-85 percent of their potential at Sectionals so we were very proud of what they did there. They had done their jobs but the stars still needed to be aligned.”

Historic result for Jr. Eagles It was a historic achievement for the Richmond Christian Eagles at the B.C. Invitational Junior Boys Volleyball Championships in West Kelowna.

Competing against 24 schools of all sizes from across the province, the sixth ranked Eagles more than lived up to their billing — reaching the championship match before falling to No. 1 Langley Christian.

The locals hung tough with the heavily favoured Lightning, losing 25-21, 25-20 and 25-15.

The silver medal finish was the best-ever by a junior boys team in the history of Richmond Christian and certainly provides an extremely bright future for the school at the

senior level.

The Eagles impressed everyone with their tenacity, not dropping a set to reach the final, including a dominant win over No. 2 ranked Duchess Park of Prince George in the semi-finals.

Martin Prinsloo and Leo Tam were named to the tournament all-star team. The Richmond Christian roster also features: Matthew Penner (team captain), Stanley Cen, Shawn Chan Creston Fok, Joshua James, Elijah Kim, Zachary Lee, Nathan Louie, Jay Makalintal, Hansen Tu and Alan Yang.

The team was coached by Karen Prinsloo, with assistance from Sigfried Ong. Jeremy Chan was the manager.

TAKE NOTICE THAT Pacific Mattress Recycling Inc., 11571 Twigg Place, Richmond, BC, has applied to the Greater Vancouver Sewerage and Drainage District (“Metro Vancouver”) pursuant to the Greater Vancouver Sewerage and Drainage District Municipal Solid Waste and Recyclable Material Regulatory Bylaw for a Licence to: 1. Operate a BROKERING FACILITY at 11571 Twigg Place, Richmond, BC where Mattresses, Box Springs, Futons, Couches, White Goods, Metal and Textiles would be received, disassembled and sorted and salvaged for the purpose of recycling. These activites will reduce the volume of waste destined for disposal.

2. Operate within the boundaries of the land or premises with the legal description of: PID 024-920-151, Lot A District Lots 459 and 1014 Group 1 NWD Plan LMP48355.

3. Operate Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm and Saturaday and Sunday 10:00am3:00pm.

4. Ensure no more than 176 tonnes of Recyclable Materials would be on the site at any one time.

It should be noted that this application is at a preliminary stage and has not gone to the Solid Waste Manager for his consideration. Therefore, aspects of the proposal may change as the application proceeds through the review process.

This notice is published pursuant to the Greater Vancouver Sewerage and Drainage District Municipal Solid Waste and Recyclable Material Regulatory Bylaw 181 as amended. A person who may be adversely affected by the granting or amending of the Licence described in this notice may, within 30 days of its publication, notify Metro Vancouver’s Solid Waste Manager in writing stating how that person is affected. The Solid Waste Manager may take into consideration any information received after 30 days only if the Solid Waster Manager has not made a decision on the Licence.
