id it really bother you when the Canucks got beat by the Oilers in overtime on a dreary Sunday night in October?

Did you give a hoot when Alice Wong battled back from the dead (she was buried and the funeral was in full swing on CTV) to retain her Richmond Centre seat in the House of Parliament on Monday night?

And could you care less what the street banners draped from the city’s lamp posts are going to look like next year?

Being almost exclusively a soccer fan, I didn’t bat an eyelid when learning that Edmonton had taken the “W” from Vancouver, especially when there are 30,427 games to go of a season that never dies. (Don’t get me started on North American cricket, AKA baseball.)

I also admit, when covering the federal election the other night, I had to suppress bewildered chuckles when all and sundry at Wong’s campaign office put down their root beers and dim sum to yelp with delight and punch the air when it became apparent their, dare I say, hero was clawing back the deficit.

(Just what Wong’s brigade of followers think she’s going to achieve in Opposition that she didn’t do in power is beyond me — but who am I to judge?)

The street banners, however, I — all of a sudden — do give a toss about.

Really? “The street banners?” you may ask.

The answer, you’ll be pleased to know (or maybe you couldn’t care less?) for giving a monkey’s about all of the above is something called “emotional investment.”

Investment of your precious emotions and time leads to deep commitment and further investment that serves to progressively strengthen that attachment — or so says www.alan’samatueurpsychology.com.

Until Tuesday night, I would’ve been hard pressed to recall any of the previous year’s street banners. However, having had the privilege of spending a few hours poring over and judging next year’s publicly-submitted banners...I now care.

The same rationale applies when it comes to explaining why I’m a lifelong supporter of a small, provincial Scottish soccer team, which generally languishes in the wrong end of the league table and flirts with “disaster” every season, aside from two magical cup-winning moments in the 38 years. I’ve “invested” in Killie, with little hope of anything in return.

It’s the same reason Canucks fans “blindly” roll into Rogers Arena game after game, year after year, dreaming that this season might, just might, be THE Stanley Cup season.

And it’s undoubtedly a similar passion that fuels the fire burning under Wong’s army.

We’ve all got one thing in common, though – we give a damn. And I’ll take that ahead of apathy, win, lose or draw.

hat was quite the election. So, what happened in Richmond?

Change happened. But, just how much change?

Despite the loss in Steveston-Richmond East, the Conservatives still fared favourably in Richmond with 41 per cent of the overall popular vote, above the national Conservative support of 32 per cent.

The numbers tell us Richmond should have Conservative representation amidst this “red wave,” and it does.

Ergo, incumbent MP Alice Wong’s job becomes even more important (and difficult) — she must now fight through politics to deliver services to the city, and she must be more vocal in the House of Commons.

For the 56 per cent who did not vote for Wong, questions have been raised as to whether she is up to the task. Indeed, Wong will need to “change” in order to be successful.

In electing Liberal Joe Peschisolido, Richmondites have an MP on the winning side.

Peschisolido overcame renewed water cooler chuckles of “Jumpin’ Joe” — for his crossing of the House floor in 2002 — an embarrassing defeat to Wong in 2011, and a more recent, highly publicized party nomination squabble that saw fellow nominee Wendy Yuan accuse Liberal insiders of meddling in their so-called democratic process during candidate nominations.

What should we expect from Peschisolido?

For one, I would expect Peschisolido to be more available to media to answer the “tough questions.” After all, it was prime minister-designate Justin Trudeau, on the campaign trail, who stated: “Here in Canada, we respect journalists. They ask tough questions, as they should.”

The day after the election, Trudeau also opened up the press gallery room for, reportedly, the first time in seven years.

We can also expect Peschisolido to be

front and centre in restoring environmental protection laws so potentially hazardous industrial projects — such as jet fuel being barged up the Fraser River — are independently reviewed in a holistic manner, as promised.

On a personal level, Peschisolido echoed his party’s message of change. The divorced lawyer found a new partner and also became a vegan, as he noted in one public forum.

So, we can expect Peschisolido to champion for improved standards for the treatment of farm animals, as promised.

Now, as for Trudeau, his platform has a number of promises that can easily be achieved in the first two years, if not immediately. It should not be difficult to remove the muzzles from federal scientists (whilst reducing the ballooning “information services” bureaucracy Stephen Harper built), respect the Supreme Court of Canada, invest money immediately to ensure First Nations people have potable water, reinstate the long-form census, and eliminate omnibus bills whilst opening up debate in Parliament.

Here in Richmond, he has promised federal money for more Canada Line trains — an achievable gesture by 2019.

Trudeau’s biggest task will be to improve the economy. For the most part, his financial commitments are not particularly drastic, unless he were to truly commit to fossil fuel divestment.

Perhaps equally interesting will be whether Trudeau keeps his promise for electoral reform when he just benefitted from the status quo (54 per cent of seats with 40 per cent of the vote). This cannot be done in a year or two, but it will be telling to see if he maintains his promise and gets the ball rolling.

Whether Trudeau keeps his promise on this will be a telling sign of whether the party has truly shed itself of the ugly internal politics that defined it 10 years ago.

If one were to look at Richmond as a lens into the party, one could argue we may not see such a drastic “change.”

Why the TFSA should be part of your plan It was launched by the Tories in 2009 as another option for Canadians to save for our retirements. The contribution limit was $5,000 per year. In their most recent budget, the annual limit was increased to $10,000 per year.

In contrast with an RRSP, contributions are not tax deductible. However, withdrawals are not taxed either (that includes income earned in the TFSA). Thus, the invested capital is never taxed and the earned income is not taxed either.

Also unlike the RRSP, there is no limit to annual withdrawals. Like the RRSP, a beneficiary may be designated. That designated beneficiary generally takes the TFSA tax-free on death.

On the death of the holder, unless there is a designated beneficiary, the TFSA value is included in the deceased holder’s Estate, although any income, dividends or capital gains earned prior to death are not taxable.

The TFSA is only six years old, so of course nobody as yet can hold a significant amount of money in a TFSA. So, while a TFSA may be useful for someone approaching retirement, it is arguably better suited for a younger person, who will have many more years to build it up.

LETTERSto the Editor Elderly voter embodies courage Dear Editor, Election day arrived. I was the poll station supervisor — nervous and anxious, to say the least. I had not done this before.

Was everything in place? People? Stations? Supplies? Signs?

With palms sweating, at exactly 7 a.m. I opened the doors of the gymnasium at Homma elementary. A small crowd had already gathered, eager to do their duty. It was show time.

They came, some with earnest faces, some in a jovial mood chatting with neighbour’s, baby strollers, business attire, joggers, trades people, young, old, in they came.

The democratic machine was working. Identification was taken, names cross-checked on “the list”, ballots were handed out. Behind the cardboard veil of secrecy, they put their X on our future, and with resolute, dropped them in the ballot box.

There were glitches, of course.

“I’m not on ‘the list,’ “I just moved here,” “I live overseas,” “I married, and have a new name.” One by one, we resolved the issues, trying our best so that one and all eligible voters could cast their precious ballot. Busy, yes, I was busy.

Out of the corner of my eye from across the gym, I spotted him, a tall man, dressed for the occasion.

I presumed he was in his nineties. He entered, paused and looked around. With two canes and a determined, yet kind, face, he slowly made his way to his designated station.

I watched each painstaking step. It was a slow march. He needed a rest when he got there and a

chair was brought for him to sit during the identity process. Slowly he rose, ballot between fingers that were also clutching one of his canes. I came over to see if I could be of assistance as he made his way behind the cardboard veil.

Moments later he emerged, wondering where to drop his ballot. I picked up the box and brought it to him, held it out for him, and with a soft smile, he dropped it into the slot.

“Thank you”, he said, with eyes as kind as I seldom see.

Slowly, he walked back across the gym to the exit and out the door. I was speechless as I watched this man. I walked out after him. As he stood beside his electric mobility cart about to get on, I said, “Sir, I have enormous respect for you.”

He straightened his shoulders, raised his head and for a brief moment our eyes locked in silence.

“Thank you,” he said, with a gentle yet clear voice.

“I fought in a world war for this,” he added.

“Thank you,” I said.

“You’re welcome,” he replied, with a smile and a nod, and he left.

I went back to the polling station. The busyness of the day hadn’t stopped. Problems kept coming, good problems, problems we can fix so we can vote. I couldn’t get him out of mind. I had briefly encountered true courage, integrity, loyalty, gentleness and kindness in a man who showed me how to live my life.

District scores high despite tough test Dear Editor, Richmond School District is facing a very difficult situation. In view of the declining enrollment in some of its schools, it may have to close a few of them. In this context, I had an opportunity to attend an open house on Oct. 20 at Blundell elementary school.

Three components impressed me in particular. First, I appreciate the way the school district has decided to seek feedback from the parents of the children of the schools that may be closed. This makes it a very fair process.

Second, I enjoyed the welcoming, open and respectful attitude of the school officials, trustees, senior staff, as well as student volunteers. They were very patient and understanding in answering questions from parents.

Third, I would like to commend the large number of parents especially from James Thompson elementary, my neighbourhood school, for taking the time to attend the open house. I am sure that at the conclusion of this process the trustees will make a decision that is in the best interests of the students, teachers, parents and the community.

Wong now a finless shark Dear Editor, The election is now history but the campaign tactics of the Chinese media in Richmond are suspect at best.

The reported rumours of drugs and prostitution hardly match the current proliferation of massage parlours and mahjong dens in Richmond.

This reporting was obviously for the benefit of the Chinese community.

It would be interesting to know who put them up to it.

Were they treated to a bowl of shark fin soup from Wong’s kitchen as a sign of gratitude?

However, with the Liberals getting a majority, the Conservative win in Richmond Centre becomes a shark with no fin.

s the dust settled on his unsuccessful bid to claim the new riding of StevestonRichmond East for the Conservatives, Kenny Chiu lamented on a lack of communication to better explain the Tories’ platform and policies while in government.

Chiu singled out what he called misinforming attack ads launched by the Liberals that focused on a provision in Bill C24 that allowed the government to revoke Canadian citizenship from dual citizens who are convicted of terrorism, high treason and several other serious offences.

Chiu claimed Cantonese radio ads supporting Richmond Centre Liberal candidate Lawrence Woo spread misinformation about creating a second class of Canadian citizen which resonated with the large number of immigrants living in Richmond.

“The attack ads were vicious,” Chiu said.

“They were not saying the government was trying to do this. They said the Conservatives have treated all immigrants as second-class citizens.

“How would you react if you heard that and you were not born in Canada or had family members who were immigrants?

“That’s what I call fear mongering,” he added.

Woo, who was edged out in Monday night’s vote as Conservative incumbent Alice Wong retained her seat by 1,136 votes, denied the characterization of the ads as attack-minded.

“They were just stating a fact. Many people saw Bill C24 as creating a second class of

Canadian and people are entitled to their opinions,” Woo said.

Chiu said the Tories were also battling history as the Liberals swept to a majority government victory.

“We all knew we were facing a monumental, historical challenge,” Chiu said. “In more than a century, no one has won four straight elections.

“By and large, we ran a strong and professional campaign. But after 10 years with the same party, I think Canadians decided to try something new, to change.”

Chiu added he was grateful for the support he did get from voters — he managed to earn 16,630 votes (38.5 per cent) — Monday night, while the Liberals’ Joe Peschisolido topped the polls with 19,485 (45.1 per cent).

Wong win officially stretched Alan Campbell

I

n the wake of a chaotic federal election night in Richmond, it has transpired that victorious incumbent Tory MP Alice Wong actually won a shade more comfortably than the prelimenary result.

By the time the last poll was counted on Monday night in her Richmond Centre riding at around 11 p.m., Wong – who was elected for a third term – 17,693 people, or 43.5 per cent of those who voted and 463 more than closest rival Lawrence Woo, decided she deserved another four years in Ottawa.

By Wednesday morning, however, after the Elections Canada validation process, the final winning margin had been stretched to 1,136 votes in her favour. The final result was: Vincent Chiu (Greens): 1,152 (2.9%); Jack Trovato (NDP) 4,602 (11.5%); Alice

Wong (Conservative) 17,622 (44.2%); Lawrence Woo (Liberal) 16,486 (41.4%).

Total number of valid votes: 39,862; rejected ballots: 227; total number of votes: 40,089.

The new Richmond Centre riding saw an overall voter turnout of 58.9 per cent, not including those who registered on Election Day. In 2011 the turnout in the Richmond riding was 51.0 per cent.

With claims posted election night on social media of pre-marked ballots in favour of Wong showing up at polling stations in the Richmond Centre riding, Liberal candidate Woo said he is looking into the matter.

“At this point, I am only asking for more information,” Woo said.

Calls to Elections Canada on the matter were not returned by the News’ deadline.

Future: Too early for Chiu From page 6 “Regardless of which party won, democracy was the real winner in Richmond,” Chiu said.

As for what he does now, Chiu said the next few days will be dedicated to thanking a legion of volunteers and tying up loose ends in his campaign office.

“I have to make sure all the contracts are all filled and the bills paid,” he said.

In terms of a political future, Chiu said, “I will continue to care for this community. It is where I live. It is where my home is, where I

work and where my kids go to school.

“I will continue to be involved. I still believe that even with a Liberal majority government, bent on spending itself into deficit, I think the Conservative Party’s involvement in holding them accountable is even more important.

“I will continue to work to provide a different vision for the country. I genuinely don’t believe the tax and spend Liberals is the right choice and direction for the country. But I respect the results of our democratic process.”

Asked if he’d consider a run at provincial politics, Chiu said it was too early to say.

A

Richmond man is facing a first-degree murder charge in relation to a kidnapping in North Vancouver.

According to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), Tian Yi Zhang, 23, one of four suspects in the case, is facing the charge for his part in the kidnapping and death of a 22-year-old man in the early morning hours of Sept. 29.

That was when North Vancouver RCMP responded to a call as part of an active investigation in multiple jurisdictions throughout the Lower Mainland.

One male was found deceased at the scene. Police have not released the victim’s identity or the cause of death.

But according to Crown prosecutor Brian MacFarlane on Oct. 5, the victim in the kidnapping was Peng Sun. So far, police have released few details about the case, including

whether there is a connection between Sun and any of the accused.

In addition to the murder charge, Zhang also faces charges of kidnapping and indignity to a body.

Zhang appeared in court on Oct. 20 and has been held in custody.

Also charged in connection with the investigation are Casey Hiscoe, Dyllan Green, and Jacob Gorelik.

Green, 20, and Gorelik,18, are also from Richmond and have been released on $5,000 bail. They face charges of indignity to a body.

David Fai, lawyer for Green, said back on Oct. 5, “there’s very little evidence my client knew what was going on.”

hings are looking up for the enhancing of our central park, the Garden City Lands.

Concerns I’ve expressed to the Agricultural Land Commission, city council and you, the readers of this column, regarding the city’s commitment to maintaining the lands’ agriculture status, are being addressed.

Both Dave Semple, the city’s general manager of parks, and Coun. Harold Steves, chair of council’s parks committee, have assured me about that.

In agreement with the city, the Sustainable Agriculture faculty at Kwantlen Polytechnic University is now developing a comprehensive agriculture management plan for the lands.

They’re engaged in thorough soil sampling on a grid of the whole area.

This scientific approach joins an existing hydrology study in a positive trend.

Adequate inventories of the lands’ vegetation and wildlife are also needed for a conservation plan featuring sphagnum bog restoration.

If someone with the abilities of a Michael Wolfe, biology teacher and local advocate, focuses on key species such as sphagnum moss and native shrubs, sufficient information can be added fairly

quickly to meet initial needs.

With that knowledge base, it should be possible to determine good locations for dike road trails around the perimeter and through the middle of the lands.

City engineers could then model the construction requirements for that infrastructure and optimize its water-management effects, taking the hydrology study further.

I’ve been asked to prepare some analytic suggestions for the parks committee.

With our directors, I will draw on extensive knowledge gathered by the Garden City Lands Coalition, the citizens’ movement that saved the lands from dense development.

As it evolved into the Garden City Conservation Society, we kept on listening and learning.

There’s a long way to go, but there have never been better signs of city resolve to treat the Garden City Lands as what they’ve always been: taxpayer-owned green space in the heart of Richmond, ideal as our ALR central park for accessible agriculture, conservation and openland recreation for community wellness.

The lands are legacies from our past to steward for the future.

The late Mary Gazetas, one of our founding directors, had a motto worth recalling as the Garden City community looks ahead: “Keep at it. It’s worth it.”

Municipal police force? Been there, done that

t was a quiet year for police.

Officers responded to just one report of breaking-and-entering, a handful of petty thefts and some violations of the Lords Day Act for working on Sunday. There were few deaths — except for those on Nov. 11, 1916.

That night, the Richmond Police Force was called into action on the north arm of the Fraser River. The small, fledgling municipal force started work just a year earlier — a century removed from the current debate of leaving the RCMP to reestablish a municipal force in Richmond.

At 7 p.m. George Smith drove his bus toward the open North Arm drawbridge.

He didn’t stop. The bus smashed through a gate and plunged into the cold river.

Police and others raced to the scene to help. Three passengers were saved but nine people died, including Smith. Most of the bodies weren’t recovered.

At the time, it was the worst motor vehicle accident in the region’s history, according to a report in the Victoria newspaper The Daily Colonist, and certainly the most serious call the Richmond Police Force had answered.

In 1915 Richmond’s population was nearing 5,000, prompting a shift in policing models. The community demanded a department with greater oversight than what it was used to: council-appointed constables patrolling the streets.

Enter the Board of Police Commissioners, a body created by council and chaired by the mayor, which marked the start of 25 years of a municipal police force. The board reviewed reports from the police chief on crime and police activities, and also heard complaints from

In those years police dealt with many matters, including those far removed from the big cases of TV dramas. In his first annual report to council, police chief Andrew Waddell didn’t exactly raise eyebrows.

“No cases of a serious nature have been committed, the majority having been petty thefts, assaults, offences against the Indian Act, gambling, cruelty to animals, violations of the Motor Vehicle Traffic Regulations and the Game Act,” he told council on Jan. 3, 1916, according to handwritten council minutes preserved at the City of Richmond Archives.

“A great number of undesirables have been brought before the court and the municipality freed of them. The most serious cases were six of theft which I am pleased to report were all convicted.”

schools and cyclists riding without lights to calls for more stop signs and requests to crack down on liquor being smuggled into school dances at Cambie Gym. In the Depression years, the board heard of illegal cigarette sales, stolen chickens and pricey prisoners’ meals.

Board members also urged police to follow municipal staff and cut salaries, and local cops obliged. The chief agreed to donate $5 per month to a relief fund, while constables would fork over $4.

Cases of police misconduct are also found in the board’s minutes. In 1935, Const. H. Tims was called onto the carpet for “certain alleged irregularities in the collection of trades licences.”

Tims submitted his resignation, but the board refused to accept it, firing him instead and demanding the immediate return of his equipment.

In the final year of the force, police responded to an average of 37 calls per

month. Officers also made five arrests each month, on average.

In 1940, the province lured Richmond to a B.C. police force at a lesser cost. Richmond agreed to pay $9,200 annually for the service — 25 per cent less than the municipality spent on policing that year.

The switch was made in 1941 but didn’t last long. The RCMP took over in 1950.

Today, city council is mulling a return to a municipal force.

Coun. Bill McNulty, chair of council’s community safety committee, said he’s waiting to see details on the cost.

Other cities are watching closely. McNulty noted if Richmond made the switch it would be a first in Canada.

t the heart of Volkswagen’s ‘defeat device scandal’ is not a mechanical device, as such, but rather computer code and if we, ultimately and collectively take away anything from this still unfolding discouraging tale, it will likely be a heightened awareness of the challenges presented by the modern car as a computer on four wheels.

A recent article in The New York Times put it this way, “New high-end cars are among the most sophisticated machines on the planet, containing 100 million or more lines of code.

Compare that with about 60 million lines of code in all of Facebook or 50 million in the Large Hadron Collider.”

Chris Gerdes, a professor of mechanical engineering at Stanford University agrees. He says cars have now reached, “biological levels of complexity” bringing numerous benefits, but also new risks and “new opportunities for malevolence.”

Volkswagen has admittedly taken advantage of this complexity to flout emissions control regulations. While it is currently blaming “a couple of software engineers,” other insiders and US investigators have been quoted as saying the number of different models of diesel engines involved, and of different versions of the software developed both for different emissions control systems and differing US and European regulatory standards point to a “complex deception” involving a range of employees—“software technicians [who] would have needed regular funding and knowledge of engine programs.”

Either the code is vulnerable or it’s not.” Currently the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is studying the model used by the Federal Aviation Administration to oversee the software design process for critical systems controlling flying. “They go in periodically, and say, ‘Show me what you’re doing and convince me that you’re doing a good job — or else I’m not signing off, and it’s not going in an airplane.”

Of course computer code oversight requires skilled inspectors. Currently the NHTSA says it has 0.3 staff members for every 100 car crash fatalities compared to the over 10,000 FAA staff members for every 100 commercial aircraft fatalities. The challenge of regulating complex software has even prompted some experts to call for automakers to put their source code in the public domain which could mean even more watchdogs, even the self-appointed.

Passion. Whimsical. Fun. And for the City of Richmond, love is fleeting.

For a brief moment in time, Richmond — more specifically, Steveston — joined the growing list of cities and towns where a love lock bridge was borne out of a few symbolic gestures from lovers.

At Steveston’s Phoenix Pond, last month, about a half dozen couples appeared to have intended to lock in their love for eternity by attaching padlocks to the bridge’s mesh wiring.

The notion of two people in love inscribing their names on a padlock, attaching it to a bridge (or some other structure in a popular public space) and throwing away the key to symbolize unbreakable love sounds innocent enough, but it is rather controversial.

Last week, after the Richmond News posted a photo on Facebook of the locks attached to the bridge, the City of Richmond immediately removed the locks.

“As has happened in Paris and with other locations, if allowed to proliferate, weight can become an issue,” said the city’s spokesperson Ted Townsend via email, after describing the few locks as a safety issue.

Townsend went on to explain that the city has not done a precise load analysis of the bridge, however, as it’s a pedestrian bridge, it does have a limited capacity.

“Concern is more with the design of the bridge. The mesh where the locks are being attached is intended as a safety barrier and if too many are applied they could compromise the integrity of the mesh. While there’s only a few locks there now, precedent in other locations has shown that the numbers can

increase rapidly so we’re taking preventative action now,” explained Townsend.

Nowhere in the world have love locks been more popular and controversial than in Paris, France, where more than one million padlocks had been affixed to the 100-plus year-old Pont des Arts.

Weighing a reported 45 tonnes, the locks were removed this summer by municipal authorities who noted they were causing structural damage to the railings.

Notably, several other bridges were afflicted/graced by the love lock phenomenon. People flocked to the Seine River while others protested the act.

Now the Richmond-based Fundamentals for Change Society (FFC) is aiming to empower the youth leaders in the Kingston community in Jamaica by gathering as many donations for new and used laptops as possible before journeying to the Caribbean on Nov. 5.

The group, all volunteers

from Richmond, is hoping to either raise enough money for at least four laptops – or receive gently used ones – to gift to the Youth Leadership Committee in Riverton, Kingston.

The youth group in Jamaica has just set up base in an old shipping container and the hope is that the laptops will help them with homework, research, resumes and with their outreach programs, which includes helping the elderly people in their community.

“We don’t have any yet, so we’re really hoping someone is willing to donate funds or a gently used laptop, with a charger,” said FFC’s founder Ayako Turnbull. “(The youth group) do have a homework club with a couple of really old computers but the wi-fi is terrible and it takes them ages to do the simplest things.

“If we have enough money, we may also sponsor

a wi-fi upgrade as it really sucks down there.” Turnbull said the trip, following a similar one a year ago to help build a school playground funded by FFC and take down $4,000 worth of medical supplies, will check the three boxes that drive FFC. “Education: It’s an isolated community, so (the laptops) can provide them with knowledge,” she said.

“Empowerment: This kind of thing can break the cycle of poverty. Play: We are also planning on taking the kids to the beach for the day.”

As well as McMath secondary grad Turnbull, Jeff Kuzik, Allan Chin and Feven Berhane are making the trip to Jamaica in a couple of weeks. The group will also help carry out maintenance work on the playground they helped fund and build last year.

After 30 years of calling the same semi-detached townhouse in Richmond my home, I made the very difficult decision to move into a care or communal living facility.

That decision was the start of an interesting journey of soulsearching, research, and change. With the advantage of hindsight, I have written this personal account of the steps involved in moving, in the hope the information I share will be helpful for seniors who, sooner or later, will be faced with a similar, often difficult, decision.

While some seniors have the choice of living with relatives, most will have to wrestle with the question of where they want to spend the last part of their lives.

There are always mitigating factors in the multi-faceted decision of whether to cope a little longer alone, or not.

My reasons for considering to move were two fold. First, I didn’t live within easy walking distance of stores, so if I lost or chose to surrender my drivers’ licence, I would be forced to move, whether I was ready or not. Secondly, I was extremely lonely. (Loneliness is the plague of old age.)

I was also mindful of the fact that if I had a stroke or a fall and was taken to a hospital, then deemed too infirm to return home, under Vancouver Coastal Health policy, I could be transported to the first available bed in a long-term care facility, virtually anywhere in the Lower Mainland. An outcome like that would not only take me away from familiar surroundings, but also make visiting difficult, if not impossible, for friends and family. So, in the summer of 2014, at age 91, I decided to investigate what sort of care or independent living facilities were available in Richmond.

! Doing the research

There are a variety of choices available to seniors, depending on level of need. While I looked at some places I couldn’t afford or didn’t like, in the end I registered at three different facilities. Each one had a wait list of six months to a year. (Wait times at facilities vary greatly, and can radically change in a short time, so it’s important to check back periodically.) In order to maintain a place on waiting lists, I paid a token amount at each place to register. Each of the facilities had charming leasing officers who were willing to show me around and/or invite me for tea or a meal.

Some advice, as you make contact with each facility’s intake coordinator, ask if any of the suites are eligible for subsidy through SAFER (a provincial program known as Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters). I asked and found I was eligible to receive a small monthly subsidy. It’s not much, but every bit counts. In my case, the subsidy pays for my parking.

Of course, facility prices vary, but for the type of accommodation I was looking for, a small, one-bedroom apartment, with a balcony, ranged from $2,755 to $4,550 monthly. While those prices may seem high, they typically include three meals a day, light housekeeping once a week and a variety of entertainment and activity options, ranging from bus tours to “in house” or visiting singers, artists and other guests. In addition, there are lots of potential friends.

When I was doing my research, I was continually assured that in a shared living facility there is always something to do.

The decision to move is just the beginning. Once made, there are many other things to think about. If you get a call telling you that you’ve reached the top of a wait list, you must decide quickly if you’ll take it, regardless of whether or not you’re actually ready to move. If you delay, you run

the very real risk of being shunted down the list, losing your place at the top.

Kerry Baisley, a director with Vancouver Coastal Health in Richmond – a wonderful resource to whom I went for advice – said, “Moving to residential care can be one of the most stressful events in a senior’s life, and very little time is allowed for the decision.”

That certainly was true for me and any senior with whom I have spoken.

In my case, the sequence of events went something like this: I put my name on wait lists, then my home on the market, then spent weeks fretting. If I sold my townhouse before I was offered a place, I’d be homeless; if I was offered a place before I sold my townhouse, I couldn’t afford the move. Like many, I needed the money from the sale to make monthly payments for the new place. A real catch-22!

Luckily, I sold but requested, and received, a two-month closing date, then kept fingers crossed that something would come up within the 60 days. Thankfully, just as I sold, I was told a place was available. It wasn’t exactly the suite I was hoping for, but given what was available, I took it.

wave oven. I kept my toaster oven, electric frying pan, which has been a blessing, and a one-burner hot plate to heat soup when I prefer to stay in my suite instead of joining the group for meals. The place is about 600 square feet. I’m lucky to have a large balcony.

Moving is costly. I remember the old days in Vancouver when my mum and sister and I hired the Bay Transfer for $10. Now it’s hundreds of dollars, depending on the mileage and the load. It’s good if you and your belongings arrive at the same time — or at least on the same day.

! Settling in, more of a loner than I thought

I never thought of myself as a loner, but I find I am. It is very difficult to insinuate myself into an established group.

According to gerontologists, the death of a mate and moving are the two most disrupting and difficult adjustments faced by seniors. For me, living alone for so long had become the norm. After the move, my brain became fuzzy, I couldn’t remember names.

When I was in my own home of many years, I had what I call a “home base” from where I made decisions to visit, to shop, to go on a trip, everything. All decisions were made ! hen Jennifer Yuhasz took her first steps into the world of documenting history, she didn’t have to go very far.

As a grade schooler, she simply explored her grandparents’ yard on the family cattle and wheat farm two hours southeast of Regina, Saskatchewan.

There, she came across all manner of buried “gems” that told stories about life on the property, from old bottles and cans to a large meat slicer common in the local stores.

“I think I was the only kid that was thrilled when their grandfather brought in an old, Co-op meat slicer with great big rusty blades,” said Yuhasz, 32, the City of Richmond’s new archivist. “My mom wasn’t so happy. But my curiosity about relics and antiques probably came from a love of reading. My mom was a librarian and she’d always read to me.”

While the majority of what Yuhasz came across on the family property were everyday items, it was the stories they could tell that fascinated her. It’s an interest she developed and took with her when she studied to become an archivist at UBC’s School of Library Archives and Information Studies after majoring in history in Saskatoon at the University of Saskatchewan.

While that type of vocation may not be for everyone, Yuhasz said the attraction for her was immediate.

“I remember having to do research for a project and had to go to the University of Saskatchewan archives and just fell in love with the place,” she said. “It was fascinating that I could see how things were in the past and how people lived their daily lives.”

Today, after completing a Masters of Archival Studies at UBC, Yuhasz has been immersed in that world that allows the public to travel back in time for a glimpse of how things were.

That’s the payoff for her when the public make requests of the local archives and then come into the offices in the Richmond Cultural Centre to review the materials.

“You actually get to see the past,” she said. “And I was always interested in social history. You can really only glean that information in bits and pieces in archival records.”

While that may be dry in places — when it comes to sheets of historical documents — it can fill in gaps in a search that can mean a lot to someone who is, perhaps, interested in their family’s history.

Luckily for Yuhasz, her family was good at passing down family stories that help paint a more complete picture.

“My grandparents, on my dad’s side, were good storytellers,” she said. “They would take us out to their old farmhouses

where they grew up and we’d explore them.”

That type of immediate connection to the past is vital, Yuhasz said.

“It’s also important because I asked. A lot of kids and grandkids don’t necessarily think of asking those questions until their parents or grandparents are gone,” she said. “But I was always interested from a young age. So, I always asked questions.”

That natural curiosity hasn’t waned with age.

“I recently did an oral history interview with my grandparents, which actually didn’t go over very well,” Yuhasz said with a chuckle. “They didn’t like speaking on a recorder. They just completely clammed up. That was quite funny. But it’s very important to have that type of connection to ask about family history and genealogy.”

It’s also a chance to conduct a little

but of “detective work” when it comes to piecing together materials to get an overall view of a time and place.

“I don’t think archival work is for everybody, but it is for me,” Yuhasz said, adding her job in Richmond is a good fit because it represents a culmination of her work experiences elsewhere which included stops at the City of Vancouver Archives, Vancouver Maritime Museum and the Jewish Museum and Archives of B.C. “Working in the City of Vancouver, then going to the maritime museum to learn about the canning, the shipping industries, and later moving to the Jewish museum to learn about immigration and building a community across B.C., it’s been a great learning experience that helped me prepare for where I am now,” she said.

“In keeping with the Anglican ethos, we offer an alternative,” he said, adding he wasn’t sure how many Anglican churches across B.C. stock the rice-based wafers. “Generally, the church has a tolerance for local expression.”

The effort to establish Wise Bites has been a professional challenge and also a personal one for James — when she was 15, her mother died of cancer.

“That’s why I became very passionate about the effects of sugar and meat on our bodies.

I am very passionate about the small steps we can make to improve our health,” she said. “People don’t want to take responsibility, sometimes. It’s more fun to eat potato chips.”

At the moment, 21 products — cookie bars, muffins and loaves — are produced from Wise Bites’ 1,200-square-foot production facility using Quinoa flour — from Saskatchewan, as well as Bolivia — instead of wheat, and chia seeds in place of eggs.

“I wanted to be free of those top 11 allergens so I could open that door up to everybody to have healthy food,” James said.

“Now, we can easily produce 4,500 muffins, or 11,000 bars a day.”

At the moment, Wise Bites products are available at a variety of grocery stores including Whole Foods, Choices, Thrifty Foods, Save-On-Foods and Nesters.

“We’ve made it as far as Winnipeg and working hard to get into Toronto,” James said, adding that to maintain Wise Bites’ profile she hustles off to six or eight demonstrations each weekend, dishing out samples in grocery stores that stock her goods.

“We really try and help them (stores) build a client base. It’s a team effort, getting the word out there.”

And that usually caps her seven-day work week. “What I discovered long ago that the secret to last in business is to work hard, and dedicate yourself to fixing whatever didn’t work today, tomorrow,” James said.

MDA joins OneWeb team Richmond’s MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. announced in early October it has joined an effort to provide affordable broadband access for potentially billions of users in emerging markets and rural areas using more than 900 low Earth orbit (500 miles or 800 km altitude) satellites. The group, called OneWeb, plans to extend networks of existing mobile phone operators to serve new coverage areas. Initial production is planned for launch in early 2018.

MDA’s role will be to supply its antenna and payload design, plus engineering expertise. According to MDA, streamlining production, and the weight of the individual satellites are key components in making the OneWeb constellation a success. In a press release, Daniel Friedmann, MDA’s president and CEO, said, “MDA’s strategy is to become a key supplier for LEO satellite constellations in both Earth observation and communications and we recognize that OneWeb’s architecture, team, technology and skill sets are creating a whole new opportunity for satellites and global communications. Currently we are building an advanced Earth observation constellation, and we look forward to supporting this large and very innovative communications system.”

or a decade or so, the fight against HIV/AIDS used to be a “sexy” cause-celebre; something everyone seemed to support vociferously, said Brian Wardley, a founding member of the Richmond AIDS Society.

“Now there’s a misconception that there is a cure to the disease. There isn’t, but there are good drugs that help people lead normal lives,” said Wardley, days ahead of the 13th annual Heart and Soul dinner and dance gala fundraiser this Saturday at the Radisson Vancouver Airport Hotel.

Wardley, who lost a son to AIDS in 1991, believes the fight against HIV/AIDS should not be lost amongst the litany of other medical causes.

Indeed, while the national rate of reported viral (HIV) infections has slightly decreased since the mid ‘90s the trend has seen periodic spikes. In 2012, there were 2,062 new cases, according to federal government data.

The silver lining — thanks to better drugs that suppress the virus — is the fact the number of newly reported cases of AIDS is only about 200 per year, and declining in Canada.

That means mortality rates from the virus have been subdued and more people are living with HIV/AIDS and thus require medical and social assistance.

“There are mental problems, there are drug addiction issues,” noted Wardley.

The society has one outreach worker who helps about 65 clients, many of them in Richmond, but also outside of the city, as well.

The society provides a monthly dinner for members (one needn’t have HIV/AIDS to be one) and for those with the virus or disease, there are various helpful pick-me-ups provided by the non-profit charitable group, such as monthly grocery cards for low-income people, group activities, a nonprescription drug subsidy and general social support.

A key component of the society’s work is education in Richmond high schools, said Wardley.

The HIV 101 course the outreach worker conducts at schools is a practical lesson on how to prevent contracting the virus.

“I’d say the most important thing we do is the work in the schools. Prevention is more important than a cure,” said Wardley.

Despite a surge in rational thought toward HIV/AIDS in the last decade, Wardley noted the stigma surrounding those infected by it is still prevalent.

Speaking to the News, Wardley bobbed in and out of “off the record” conversation.

When asked why he does so, he stated it was because there are still misconceptions, such as the disease being linked exclusively to homosexuality.

“In 1997, if you had HIV in Richmond and went to the hospital, they didn’t want you; if you went to a doctor, they didn’t want you; the dentist, if they did treat you, you’d be the last one of the day, and they’d clean all the instruments after. So, everyone had to go to Vancouver to see a doctor, for everything.

“And the stigma is still there,” said Wardley.

In other words, HIV/AIDS still isn’t spoken about like other diseases, such as cancer.

Meanwhile, the society is also trying to make inroads in Richmond’s immigrant communities, particularly the Chinese community, where there is little discussion or understanding about HIV/AIDS. Wardley hopes to bring “sexy” back to the HIV/AIDS discourse. His gala will be highly entertaining with host Fred Lee, of the CBC, and Dawn Chubai, of City TV, not to mention drag queen entertainment of Vivian Von Brokenhymen, Symone and Conni Smudge.

eneral Motors was the first to market a three-row crossover with the 2007 Saturn Outlook. Built upon the internally known Lambda platform, the Outlook garnered instant success. Soon, the Lambda architecture was used by the rest of the GM family: Chevrolet, GMC and Buick.

Unfortunately for Saturn, the Outlook only had a short run. But, the Lambda platform continues to live on in the Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave as proven architecture.

Compared to its siblings, the Buick Enclave boasts the most standard features and a classy look. Comfy: Large SUV provides plenty of style and space Highway commutes are effortless, and while it doesn’t boast a huge amount of horsepower, it has adequate acceleration for passing.

Aiding the Enclave’s calm ride is Buick’s QuietTuning sound suppression system.

This is more than just a marketing gimmick. At higher speeds, road noise can’t be heard and the engine is delightfully quiet, reducing fatigue over long drives.

And for those planning on minor off-road excursions, the Enclave is quite capable of handling steep passes despite its 4,745-pound (FWD) curb weight. However, the bulk is felt a bit more on twisty roads. If needed, the Enclave can also tow up to 4,500 lbs.

While it may not carve up a canyon road, the suspension does provide confident, steady grip in normal driving conditions. The Enclave feels smaller than it is at low speeds, especially with the available variable-effort steering.

On board, the new Enclave features a handsome dash with classic instrument faces and a clean integration of the touchscreen.

The standard 6.5-inch HD colour touchscreen works with GM’s IntelliLink infotainment system. This system is customizable and offers a high level of wireless connectivity. Not only are you able to create a “home page” for your favourite features, but it uses online services such as Stitcher SmartRadio. Voiceactivated Bluetooth handsfree calling is offered, as it was in previous models.

The screen also serves as the display for the standard rearview camera. It also works nicely with the available navigation system and DVD player.

Driving the Enclave is no chore from the eight-way power front seats and the wood steering wheel looks and feels great. Heated and cooled front seats are only options, but the driver seat comes with a standard memory function.

The standout feature of the Enclave’s cabin is its versatility. Available in seven or eight passenger configurations, the second row seats feature the SmartSlide system. Legroom is generous in both rear rows, but with the pull of a handle you can easily access the third row or increase cargo space.

On the topic of cargo space, the new Enclave remains at the top of this segment with a maximum total cargo volume of 115.2 cubic feet. That is achieved with the second-row folded and the third-row removed, but with both in place, there is still 23.3 cubic feet.

Big road test for Hugh Boyd T

he Hugh Boyd Trojans are ready to get down to some serious business Saturday as they look to repeat as Southern Conference AA champions.

In what is expected to be the first of two big tests, the Trojans (1-0-0) travel to Surrey to take on the Holy Cross Crusaders (1-1-0). A year ago, Boyd rolled to a 4-0-0 record in conference play, including a 34-3 thrashing of the Crusaders in its regular season finale. However, the Catholic school is much improved with a 5-2-0 overall record, including a 57-0 win over Frank Hurt last week.

The Trojans also made short work of their opponent, concluding their non-conference schedule with a 52-7 home field win over Vernon’s Clarence Fulton Maroons.

Senior tailback Gabe Saklofsky had a huge night with 213 yards rushing and five touchdowns on just 11 carries. Reace Mok added 110 yards and a major on nine attempts, while quarterback Tariq Lopez had four carries for 55 yards and a touchdown. He also hooked up with Robbie Conroy for another TD and added an interception on defence.

The Trojans are getting back to full strength after injuries forced them to postponed an exhibition game against Ballenas last month. They had 20 players available last Friday and the roster was bolstered with the addition of four juniors in a support role.

Boyd will conclude its schedule with two straight home games — Oct. 30 against Moscrop and a week later against unbeaten Langley.

Over the next three seasons (1985-87), she established herself as the No. 1 ranked amateur player in the country — earning a full-ride scholarship to Lamar University in Texas where she would win a pair of NCAA tournaments.

She later turned pro and earned her LPGA Tour card on her first attempt at qualifying school. She tasted victory in 1992, capturing the Crestar-Farm Fresh Classic in Virginia.

She closed with a 2 under 70 – one of only three professionals to break par under the severe wind conditions — holding off American Donna Andrews for the win.

“I think of that day a lot. It’s so clear in my mind,” said Wyatt. “I was doing everything right, but I did not know how I had gotten to that point. Each morning I woke up I felt completely at ease with the world.”

She was noted for her excellent short game, ranking in the top 10 in putting and sand saves in 1996.

Wyatt left the LPGA Tour two years later to begin a new chapter of her golf career as a teaching professional back in her hometown at Savage Creek Driving Range, where she still works today and also has an affiliation with Qulichena.

Even though she stepped back from her competitive career, Wyatt still showed she could compete at a high level, capturing the Canadian Women’s Tour order of merit in 2003. She also is a six time B.C. PGA champion.

Blueliners Vorster and Leduc selected to Team B.C. rosters A

pair of up-and-coming Richmond hockey standouts have been named to Team B.C. rosters for a pair of tournaments.

At just 15, blueliner Courtney Vorster is the youngest player selected to the B.C. roster for the 2015 National Women’s U18 Championships, slated for Nov. 4-8 in Huntsville, ON. She is one of nine players who also suited up for B.C. at the Canada Winter Games, held earlier this year in Prince George.

Vorster is the lone 2000-born player on the B.C. team and played last season with Seafair Minor Hockey’s Bantam A1 team. Her development also included some time in Richmond Minor Hockey’s programs. She is now attending Shattuck-St. Mary’s School in Minnesota where she is play-

ing for the U16 girls team.

The B.C. roster was finalized following a camp last month at UBC that featured three exhibition games, including a pair against the UBC women’s team.

B.C. will travel to Huntsville for pre-stage practices before taking on Alberta in its first game Nov. 4.

“The players and team staff are very excited to travel across the country to represent B.C. at Nationals,” said Director of Operations Brianna Davey. “We have a great group of staff and players who are thrilled and driven to have a successful tournament.”

Meanwhile, another 15-year-old defenceman will be in B.C. colours at the 2015 Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup, Oct. 28 to Nov. 1 in Calgary.

Matt Leduc was named to the 20-player roster following an extensive selection process. The towering 6-foot-4 standout played for Richmond Minor’s Bantam A1 team last season and was selected 31st overall by the Spokane Chiefs in last May’s Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.

Leduc now attends the Burnaby Winter Club Hockey Academy. The B.C. squad will be guided by former Greater Vancouver Canadians major midget coach Leland Mack.

“Some tough decisions, but we are happy with the team that’s going to Calgary,” said Mack. “We have a good mix of smarts, skill and size. We will need to be 20 strong for the whole tournament. All four provinces are capable of winning. The entire group is honoured to represent B.C. and B.C. Hockey.”

the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.

Panther Cheer making a difference P anther Cheer launched its season-long philanthropic campaign by raising over $3,000 for a non-profit health organization close to its heart.

The Richmond-based club sent two teams to participate in the Light the Night Walk for the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. Panther Cheer co-founder Dawn Silver is a leukaemia survivor, as is a little sister in one of its programs.

“This was for a very worth cause that is so close to our hearts here at Panthers,” said Stephanie Kennedy, the club’s other co-founder. “We truly believe our purpose at Panther Cheer is to nurture and develop amazing young people and last year we spearheaded an amazing year of giving back to our community.”

The club’s next event is a blood donor drive on Sunday, Nov. 21, organized and spearheaded by the Panthers Open team of athletes 17 and over. The goal is to bring

out new donors in hopes they will become regulars.

“Children are talked to at school about ‘social responsibility’, ‘acts of kindness’ and ‘making a difference’ in the world but often they don’t quite know how to do this,” explained Kennedy.

“This is our opportunity at Panther Cheer to give our athletes a clear action plan and opportunity to do just that. We truly believe this will compliment all that we currently do around kids and developing their compassion, empathy, respect and kindness and we are excited to show them how it can be fun and rewarding.”

On Saturday, the club welcomes the community to its second annual Trunk or Treat event. The unique trick or treating experience is for kids 11 and under. The event takes place in the parking lot of Panther Cheer’s new home — #133-2771 Simpson Road — from 5-6 p.m.

Jim, aged 77, passed away at Richmond Hospital several days after suffering a stroke. Heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff on 3South.

Born in Ottawa, Jim studied electronics at Ryerson.

He served in the RCAF Reserves and rode a motorcycle. He helped install Canada’s Pinetree radar line, and then taught high school in Sault Ste. Marie. Jim lived most of his life in Richmond, BC, raising 3 boys. He was a Cub Scout leader (Jakala) at the 25th Richmond in Steveston. He drove many cubs up to Morris Valley Scout Camp in his huge Plymouth.

His evangelical adventures took him to Papua New Guinea with WEC, and to Israel where he volunteered with Sar−El in the Israeli Army.

One day, Jim found an injured stray dog on the Richmond dyke. He spent the next 8 years caring for his new companion, pounding the sidewalks and dykes with Whitey.

Jim is survived by his former spouse Toby Hannis, his children Gordon (Meagan) and Christopher (Debbie), and granddaughters Sophia, Bryn, Alexa and Madelyn. He showed great enthusiasm for trains, politics, his grandchildren, bible study and his church community at Richmond Pentecostal Church.
