Steveston High site rushed through: neighbours Graeme Wood

Neighbours of Polygon’s Steveston High site are concerned the developer has not consulted them properly prior to submitting a request to rezone the 13-acre property, where 133 townhouses are slated to be built.

The development of the Steveston High site has been pushed through with little thought to the fact Richmond is losing a major parcel of publicly owned land.

That’s according to nearby resident Jason Ma, who, along with many others, is also questioning the city’s “public consultation” process on the development.

“Why does no one, not a single one, in political office say: Why are we selling the family silver? Just to balance the books, to show you have a surplus this year or next? …It is one of the last, large parcels of common land in Richmond,” Ma told the Richmond News.

The 13-acre, Steveston High site was sold by the Richmond School District to developer Polygon for $41 million last year.

The cash is intended to buy land in City Centre for a new school.

This week, Richmond’s planning committee forwarded a recommendation to city council to approve Polygon’s request to rezone the land.

Polygon is proposing to build 133 townhouse units, including 12 affordable housing units (exceeding current

requirements), and a childcare facility for 37 children, while handing over 4.5 acres of parkland to the city.

The application comes after it was sent back in October to fix several concerns the committee had.

Polygon has since added road improvements, improved the affordable housing layouts, and reconfigured a publicly accessible park pathway.

But the sheer size of the development has nearby residents concerned, and many, such as Ma, feel as though Polygon and the city consulted in a manner that framed the

process to their liking.

Of particular concern is how an access path to the park behind the No. 2 Road development has been planned. Plus, the townhouses are close to existing homes.

“In presenting Options A and B, the developer is assured that only A or B is the outcome. Validating one or the other is to the advantage of the developer,” Ma told councillors at Tuesday’s committee meeting.

“We were hoping to contribute ideas and feedback during the design process to the layout of options A and B, rather than voicing them afterwards,” said Ma.

He called the process “authoritarian,” noting Polygon, not the City of Richmond, ran the open house process before the rezoning process came to city hall.

Richmond’s senior planning manager, Terry Crowe, said the open houses are only part of the public consultation process for rezoning. For instance, a formal public hearing is expected if city council gives the rezoning a first reading.

When Coun. Bill McNulty asked how much notice residents were given for an open house on Dec. 2, Ma said, “we received notice on Friday for Tuesday.

As a group (of residents) we were really scrambling.”

Coun. Harold Steves said the process seemed similar to how Richmond was “consulted” by an airlines consortium on the planned jet fuel facility.

“Our consultation is the same way we’re being treated (as a city) and I think we can do better,” said Steves.

Oval museum gets budget boost Graeme Wood

An Olympic museum at the Richmond Olympic Oval will feature more interactive games than previously planned, thanks to a $4.3 million boost to its budget.

Scheduled to open next spring, the Richmond Olympic Experience — or ROX as coined by Oval staff — will now cost $10 million, up from the original $5.7 million budget announced in January 2013.

ROX will feature at least five interactive sports simulators, including kayaking, bob sleighing, ski jumping, sit-skiing and race car driving.

Overlooking the Oval ice rinks, ROX will also feature Olympic paraphernalia and a small movie theatre featuring sports films.

“It will celebrate the history of the Olympics and the Paralympics, the 2010 Games and our city’s role as an official venue city in 2010,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie on Wednesday at the Oval, a

city-owned facility.

Most of the new money comes from yet to be named corporate sponsors while an additional $250,000 from the provincial government and $500,000 from the federal government will help bolster the exhibits at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) sanctioned museum, one of 22 around the world.

At prior city council committee meetings, city staff had noted such simulators came at a significant cost, which could not be budgeted for. They’re considered important to make the “experience” more fun for visitors, in turn drawing more people to the Oval, which is significantly subsidized by an Olympic trust fund and the city itself.

The provincial funding, through BC Wheelchair Sports, helped to incorporate Paralympic sports features at the museum.

On hand at the announcement was Trevor ‘T-bone’ Hirschfield, captain of the Canadian wheelchair rugby squad.

“The Oval has been so supportive of sport and disabled sport specifically,” said Hirschfield.

He noted the museum will “allow people to try a disabled sport and actually see how physical and mental and challenging it is and to see these sports are worth celebrating.”

According to City of Richmond spokesperson Ted Townsend, the full ROX business model cannot be divulged until corporate sponsorship contracts are finalized.

He said the Oval must follow strict IOC guidelines for sponsorship.

Townsend and Brodie said ROX should pay for itself over time, as it’s expected to generate revenue.

“The business plan calls for attendance to build over the first five years. It will take time.

We expect it to become a major regional attraction over time,” said Townsend.

Brodie said somewhere in the range of $10 per visit should be expected. However, some elements of ROX will be free, such as public art, including an outdoor Olympic cauldron celebrating the torch relay and Richmond’s soon to be inaugurated Sports Wall of Fame.

Richmond RCMP is asking residents take extra care this holiday season after a spike in break-ins across the city.

Mounties say they’re investigating an abnormally high incidence of home break-ins, with some of the most common items stolen including jewelry, currency, laptop computers, cellphones, iPods, iPads, and video game consoles.

As a result, the RCMP says it has increased police presence in certain areas of the city.

Don’t toss mom’s steamed, unbuttered Brussels sprouts in the garbage; doing so will soon cost you money.

Metro Vancouver municipalities will soon ban the disposal of food scraps in the garbage as a result of a region-wide effort to reduce trash and increase recycling.

In concert with that effort, the City of Richmond will soon implement a citywide organics collection program at an estimated cost of $1 million per year.

The city already provides organics recycling at single-family homes and townhouses and is now looking to expand the program to apartments and commercial buildings. Although, sprouts and other veggies are still ending up in the landfill, according to a recent pilot project.

At Wednesday’s public works committee meeting, the city reported a 27 per cent reduction in garbage over the past year for the pilot project with apartments and commercial buildings.

The organics program will soon expand to the estimated 32,000 residential units in 700

complexes that are currently not serviced by the city for organics collection.

The pilot project found a total waste diversion rate of 50 per cent, up from 31.5.

Blue box recyclables accounted for 21.4 per cent of waste diversion, cardboard for 10.1 per cent and organics for 18.5 per cent.

That means apartment residents can still do better, as the city’s website claims that “about 39 per cent of waste disposed by multi-family residents is compostable food scraps.”

Metro Vancouver’s waste diversion goal for 2015 is 70 per cent. (Richmond’s singlefamily homes have already reached this.)

The pilot project found each multi-family unit diverted about four kilograms of organic waste every month.

The Metro Vancouver organics disposal ban in garbage starts Jan. 1.

Come July 1 waste collectors (whose services are paid for by homeowners) with garbage loads containing 25 per cent of food scraps will be levied a 50 per cent surcharge.

Come 2016, that same penalty will apply to any garbage load with five per cent food scraps, according to the city’s report.

Regional planners contest that recycling organics uses less landfill space and produces fertile soil.

Dramatic drop in Christmas kettle donations

Local programs for needy families, summer camps could be cut as a result of drought Philip Raphael

The “jingle” you hear from the bells shaken by Salvation Army Red Kettle volunteers could be those of alarm as Christmas time donations across the province, and Richmond specifically, are down significantly.

Maj. Kathie Chiu, who along with her husband Maj. Ed Chiu, are responsible for the Salvation Army’s local fundraiser, said donations are projected to drop by as much as 27 per cent over last year’s total once the kettles are packed away for another year on the afternoon of Dec. 24.

And that could mean trimming numerous local programs that include providing needy families with a weekly meal, and youngsters with a summer camp experience.

It could also lead to postponing plans for new programs, such as help for young, single moms.

“Last year, we brought in about $170,000 from the kettles in Richmond,” said Kathie. “We’ve done the calculations, factoring in the traditional rise in donations as

we get closer to Christmas, and we expect to end up with a total around $125,000.”

A recent advisory from the Salvation Army’s provincial arm stated donation projections from the 2,000 kettles or so collection across B.C. could be even more dour with a decline in the 50 per cent range.

Salvation Army spokeswoman Lauren Chan said that to date, donations are down by about $350,000 compared to the same time last year, making this year’s provincial goal of $4 million hard to achieve, she added.

“Richmond has some of the most generous people anywhere,” Kathie said, adding she has grappled for an explanation of the pending drop off in donations.

One possible reason she came up with is a steady decline in the number of the most willing donors — those in the late middle age to seniors age groups.

“Those are the ones who seem to give the most and we are losing more and more of them,” Kathie said. “The younger generation are no less generous, but tend to want

to be involved rather than write a cheque.”

Perhaps, Canadians are generally tightening their purse strings?

According to the Fraser Institute’s annual Generosity Index, Canadians are getting thriftier when it comes to donating to charity — not only thanks to a decline in the numbers of people making a donation, but generally how much they donate as a percentage of their income.

Over at the Richmond Christmas Fund, estimates indicate its goal of $200,000 in donations is within reach, said spokesman Ryan Luetzen.

Some of the fund’s campaigns reached all-time highs this season, Luetzen said, with the Richmond Automall’s Windows of Hope raising $30,000 in its 11th year of being held, and the Christmas Drive Thru totaling $10,000.

Kathie said getting enough volunteers to preside over the red collection kettles — usually two to four-hour shifts until the afternoon of Dec. 24 — is an ongoing challenge. To volunteer in Richmond, call 604-277-2424.

C

hances are you were hearing the name Uber and associating it with controversy before you even understood what the company was offering.

Though they promote themselves as a technology company that offers ride sharing services, they are in reality, just a new way of dispatching vehicles for hire.

The nearest Uber driver can be beckoned at an instant by way of a smartphone app.

The fare is prearranged and paid for with a credit card, tip included. All very convenient — especially when there’s not

a cab to be had.

The main difference between Uber and a traditional cab company is that the Uber business model appears to involve setting up operations in new cities without jumping through any of the regulatory hoops required by the local jurisdiction.

Naturally, the taxi industry is fighting them tooth and nail, and local governments are lining up to oppose them on the basis of safety. But frankly, Uber isn’t doing itself any favours by its own displays of arrogance. Investment speculators now value the

company at more than $40 billion (yes, with a B) yet Uber’s executives appear to thrive on controversy, taunting their opponents, shrugging off serious PR nightmares and conflating the hostility they’ve earned with opposition to innovation.

The sad part in all this is that Uber could be offering a new and welcome service. The existing cab industry operates to the dissatisfaction of many.

This should also be a wakeup call to regulators. There is room for innovation, but only for businesses willing to play by the rules.

But in TransLink’s case, the Yes side will only have several months to make their sales pitch. A broad-based coalition is forming to support the Yes side, and it includes

politicians of all stripes as well as business leaders and several key unions. But it’s unclear whether they can convince the people they purport to represent to actually mail in a ballot marked Yes. More than 20 years ago, we saw another broad coalition of strange political bedfellows band together to ensure the Yes side won in a referendum. That would be the Charlottetown Accord, a proposed change to the Canadian constitution, which went down to defeat despite the fact the “establishment” insisted it was a worthy endeavor.

We may be about to witness the same thing again, with a situation where the “leaders” insist they know best, while a suspicious public feels otherwise.

But if the Yes side beats the odds and actually pulls off a victory, perhaps the days of tax revolts may finally be nearing an end and governments will stop being leery about even talking about tax hikes.

It’s a long shot, I know, but a majority vote for a tax increase -- no matter how small -may well prove to be groundbreaking.

ouncing in her lap, Kathryn Donabedian would grapple playfully with her two and a half-year-old son, Jonathan.

All arms and legs, he was the typical, active toddler, keen to point out to his parents letters and numbers on signs and licence plates, often reciting them accurately, and always with a smile.

“He loved doing that. We thought it was great,” recalled Donabedian, a lifelong Richmond resident.

But what was different was the lack of one-on-one connection Jonathan had with people.

“When he was in my lap, he wouldn’t look at me.”

A small thing at first, it troubled Kathryn enough that she decided to explore what was possibly at the root of the personal distance her son seemed to maintain.

The answer came at the age of three when Jonathan was diagnosed with autism.

“It was a shock to hear, a shock for any parent to hear,” Donabedian said. “When you get the diagnosis, all these questions come to mind. It’s why, how, what? And you immediately want to fix it.”

Jonathan is now 11 and mostly non-verbal. He wears noisecancelling headphones that filter out distracting sounds.

After enrolling her son in a series of behavioural therapy programs in centres scattered across the Lower Mainland and special education programming in the local public school system, Donabedian is still exploring ways to try and guide him towards the mainstream of society.

It hasn’t been easy being the parent of an autistic child, piecing together the care and treatment for Jonathan that has had its setbacks.

“I had people tell me it was hard to work with my kid because there was so little progress, and that broke my heart,” she said.

But the overriding goal is clear in her mind.

“My dream for him is to communicate,” she said. “In general, he’s pretty easygoing and doesn’t get frustrated that he doesn’t speak.

That’s a concern.”

Autism hub breaks ground After six years of planning and fundraising, this week’s groundbreaking for the Good Life Fitness Family Autism Hub on Sea

Island, next to BCIT, is offering Donabedian — and other parents of autistic children — hope their offspring will eventually live life with a degree of independence.

The first of its kind in the province, the hub, which has a price tag of $28 million — the province has provided a grant of $20 million — will house within its 58,000-square-foot confines a one-stop centre for research and support for children, adults and seniors with autism spectrum disorder. It’s a growing community.

According to the Pacific Autism Family Centre Foundation, ASD occurs in approximately one in every 68 births, and may appear during the first three years of life. It is four to five times more common in boys than girls — affecting one in every 42 boys — and is the most common neurological disorder in children.

Given the one in 68 prevalence rate, it is estimated that there are approximately 69,000 people affected by ASD in B.C.

Charting Jonathan’s future “I worry about Jonathan’s future as an adult,” Donabedian said, her eyes starting to well up with tears as she begins to project what life could hold for Jonathan.

Ultimately, Donabedian plans to continue being his primary

caregiver, giving Jonathan independence by eventually moving him into the separate suite her parents currently occupy in her Seafair home.

“He’s my son, and that’s what I’m prepared to do,” she said.

But there are still many years before Jonathan can get to that stage. Currently, he’s enrolled at Errington Learning Centre, near Willams and No. 3 roads, a re-developed wing of Errington elementary that has space for up to eight students with learning disabilities — students who can benefit from one-on-one interaction with an educational assistant outside the often overwhelming environment of a regular classroom for children with developmental challenges.

Monica Pamer, Richmond School District’s superintendent, said the facility for elementary-aged children is for students with complicated situations.

“What we’ve learned is we can’t really meet their needs in a typical school setting,” she said.

“So, this environment — with places where you can be by yourself, a sensory room with a slide and things to swing on, plus a communal area — has a goal to get students settled and selfregulated so they are processing their environment and learning. see AUTISM HUB › page 13

“Many of them are capable in some ways, but have conditions — sometimes it’s language, or just understanding social cues, that makes it extremely difficult. This environment settles it down and simplifies it,” Pamer said.

But the key is that the students are not strictly segregated from the rest of the school population.

“We have really tried to design an environment where they can succeed and be part of the overall community,” Pamer said, adding that some learning centre students do crossover to the regular classrooms at Errington.

While the learning centre has only been open for over a year, its results have prompted thoughts of offering similar programming for secondary schoolaged students.

“We’re really pondering this,” Pamer said, “because as children mature, they can cope with more. But we are considering perhaps creating something like this for older kids.”

Breaking ground on the ‘hub’ The Good Life Fitness Family Autism Hub received a boost in funding at its Dec. 16 ground-breaking ceremony as David Patchell-Evans, the husband of Canadian Olympic rower Silken Laumann, and founder and CEO of Good Life Fitness, one of the largest, privately owned chain of fitness gyms in the industry gifted $5 million.

Patchell-Evans, known as “Patch,” said fitness has been his passion for more than three decades — he was a multiple Canadian rowing champion.

But the main source of his involvement with the hub is his daughter, Kilee, who has been affected by autism.

“I’ve always felt I had some control over the outcomes. What I have not chosen, and at many times have felt overwhelmed by, is the devastation of being a father with a daughter who has been profoundly affected by autism,” he told the large group gathered for the ground-breaking.

“When my little girl was diagnosed, help was virtually non-existent.

“Today, I have hope. Today, I have hope that parents can get reliable information; that children will be screened at an early age, not waiting years for a diagnosis,” he said.

“Hope, thanks to the strides being made by research, including our own Kilee Patchell-Evans Autism Research Group.

“So, while autism has been the greatest challenge in my life, the place where at times I felt powerless, I have learned that I can help. I can

Scheduled to open by spring, 2016, the hub will be an information and support centre, working with a series of up to eight satellite facilities across the province, said Terry McKay, project director for the facility.

That is planned to be partially run by ACT (Autism Community Training), a provincially funded program.

But what will be new to the realm of autism support is a lifespan centre, which will focus on adults identified on the autism spectrum.

“Assistance will include developing skills in finding work in the labour market, and we will be looking at some potential partners in that,” McKay said.

“But what that lifespan centre is going to do is create a computer lab that will provide training.

And all of the functions within the centre will employ adults on the spectrum.”

This has not been done previously due to the fact there is no funding currently for that age group.

“Once you reach the age of 19, any funding from the Ministry of Children and Family Development stops, so in essence, there’s no support for adults on the (autism) spectrum,” McKay said.

The question of adult support has been one topping the list during the centre’s planning stages.

“All kinds of people have come up to me and asking that,” McKay said.

“There’s cases where parents have their autistic son or daughter in school who don’t know what they are going to do when they graduate, and if there is any assistance for that. And I refer to this program that we’ll be developing over the next 12 months and be open when the centre opens.”

Also housed at the hub will be a treatment centre staffed by behaviourists who will become tenants.

Assessments will also be done in the on-site clinic.

And a research centre will be set up to include specialists from an array of sources. To date, talks have been held with UBC, Genome BC and the Michael Smith Foundation to staff that portion of the facility.

Linking all of those areas to the satellite centres will be an audio/visual system.

So far, those remote sites have yet to be identified. Work commences on that next February with the aim of getting three open by the time the hub is ready for business, McKay said.

WINTER SOLSTICE

Celebrate longest night In anticipation of the longest night of the year, families are invited to the Richmond Nature Park on Saturday, Dec. 20.

Between 1 and 4 p.m., visitors to the park can mark the occasion by drumming and roasting marshmallows.

They can also create lanterns to light up the night sky, write a wish on paper to toss in the fire

to set it free, decorate the wildlife tree to help birds survive the winter and make evergreen door swags to take home.

In addition, there will be face painting and storytelling. The event wraps up with an easy winter walk by lantern light through the park led by the Frost Fairy.

This year’s winter solstice, the longest night

of the year in the northern hemisphere, occurs on Sunday, Dec. 21. There is a gradual lengthening of daylight every day after the winter solstice until the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, is reached in June.

Admission to the event is by donation, with proceeds supporting nature education programs.

Snowshoe Thompson left big skis to fill Mitchell Smyth

On a wall in a museum here in the cradle of California’s Gold Rush country hangs a pair of home-made skis. Nearby, there’s a picture of a stern-looking bearded man.

Together they recall the story of John “Snowshoe” Thompson, a man who, against all odds, carried the mail — and much more — over the Sierra Nevada mountain range every winter, through blizzards and ice storms, for 20 years. Along the way, he became a gold-country legend — but he never received a nickel from the U.S. Postal Service.

“What we call skis now were called snowshoes here in those days,” says Mary Cory, director of the El Dorado County Historical Museum. “That’s how he got his nickname.

“He had learned cross-country skiing in his native Norway, so when he saw a newspaper advertisement seeking someone to deliver mail over the summit to Genoa, Nevada, he said he could

do it.

“He carved his first pair of skis, 10 feet (three metres) long, from wood from an old barn and in January 1856 he set off.” (It’s those skis, with one broken tip patched, that are in the museum.)

The miners in Placerville and the other Gold Rush boomtowns placed bets that he’d never make it, but three days and 145 kilometres later he skied into Genoa with his 36kilogram pack. The return journey took two days.

And so it went on, twice monthly, every winter till 1876. Thompson skied through blizzards and snow up to 15 metres deep, eating crackers and dried beef, drinking snow water he melted with his hands. After the trans-continental railway opened in 1869, carrying mail coast to coast, he continued his run, delivering packages for private clients. During the summer he worked his small farm near Placerville.

“In 1872 he applied for payment for the mail run but was told he’d never signed a contract,” says Cory.

But Snowshoe Thompson was more than just a carrier of letters and packages. He was often literally a lifesaver, bringing medication to snowbound mountain cabins.

Once, the story goes, he found a prospector suffering from frostbite.

He carried the man to Genoa, then went over the mountain to Sacramento for chloroform and brought it to the doctor, who amputated the man’s legs.

Thompson had skied 640 kilometres in 10 days and saved a man’s life.

“And he was a reporter,” says Cory. “He brought news of snow

conditions and notable happenings in gold country to Genoa where it was sent on to newspapers east of the Sierra.”

When silver was discovered in Virginia City, Nevada — the famed Comstock Lode — it was Snowshoe Thompson who carried the first samples to the assayers in Sacramento. That’s how the world first found out how valuable the Comstock was and triggered the Nevada silver rush.

Thomspon made his last run over the Sierra in March 1876. He died from appendicitis and pneumonia two months later, aged 49. He and his wife and son, who died aged 11, are buried in Genoa.

Here is the complete recipe, just in time to make for the big guy who may like a little refreshment on his travels delivering gifts.

I recently came across the cookbook Milk & Cookies: 89 Heirloom Recipes from New York’s Milk & Cookies Bakery,

by Tina-Marie Casaceli.

What I like about Casaceli’s book is that five of her eight chapters begin with a base dough, to which different ingredients can be added to yield a variety of cookies.

Here is an adaptation of Casaceli’s Vanilla Base Dough and Milk & Cookies Bakery Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Vanilla Base Dough Yield: about 3 dozen cookies Ingredients: 2 1/2 cups (7 1/2 oz) old-fashioned rolled oats; 2 cups (8 oz) all-purpose flour; 1 tsp baking powder; 1 tsp baking soda;

1/2 tsp salt; 1 1/2 cups (12 oz) unsalted butter, softened; 1 cup (7 oz) sugar; 1 cup (7 oz) light brown sugar; 2 large eggs, at room

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. Place oats in bowl of a food processor fitted with the metal blade; process until finely ground. Transfer oats to a large mixing bowl. Add flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and stir. Set aside.

3. Place butter in the bowl of a standing electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Beat on low speed to soften.

Increase speed to medium and beat until butter is light and creamy, about three minutes. With the motor running, gradually add the sugar and then the brown sugar, beating until light and creamy, about another five minutes.

4. Add the eggs, one at a time, and beat to incorporate fully, scraping down the bowl with a rubber spatula after each addition. Add the vanilla and mix to blend.

5. Slowly add the reserved dry mixture and beat. Mix the dough until ingredients are JUST blended together; do NOT overwork the dough. (If you do not want chocolate in the cookies, proceed with step 2 in the recipe below.)

Milk & Cookies Bakery Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies Vanilla Base Dough (see recipe above)

Directions: 1. Add the chocolate chunks and curls/ shavings to the Vanilla Base Dough, mixing only until chocolate is evenly distributed.

2. Using a small ice-cream scoop that is 1 3/4” in diameter, form uniform mounds of dough. Place the mounds on the prepared baking sheets about 2” apart.

3. Bake cookies until lightly browned around the edges and set in the centre.

This will take about 13-15 minutes, depending on the size of the ice cream scoop. Cookies should be chewy in the centre, so be careful to not over bake.

4. Remove from oven and let cool.

5. Cookies may be stored in a covered container at room temperature for up to a week.

MW continues to introduce a new vehicle for every possible market segment, no matter how small the niche may be. Despite having numerous SUVs in its fleet already, BMW has decided it will attempt to take even a bigger slice of the “growing pie” by introducing the coupe-style X4.

The X4 speaks to the customers who like the look of the X6 but want something a little smaller and more affordable. Also, these customers feel the X3 is a tad too traditional and mainstream. The new X4 fulfills both of those requirements.

The X4 is an all-new vehicle for 2015. For those not familiar, BMW’s with an odd number in its name, 3, 5 and 7 Series are the more practical models. The even numbered vehicles, 2, 4 and 6 Series are the more sporty models.

Design The new X4 is derived from the X3 but it sacrifices some practicality in the interest of style. BMW calls the X4 a “sports activity coupe” and it attempts to bridge a coupe and compact SUV. The most obvious difference between the X4 and the X3 is its sloping roofline, accented by sharp creases. This gives the X4 its own distinctive character.

Also, while the X4 uses the X3’s architecture, it is longer and lower – this

follows the recipe that BMW is using with the new 4 Series, which is carved out of the 3 Series.

The styling of the X4 is the most controversial aspect of this new vehicle.

Those not on board should know it follows a very successful formula BMW has used with the larger X6, and no one can deny the fact that the X4 stands out in the crowd.

The cabin of the X4 is remarkably similar to the X3, which means it has a stylish, somewhat conservative design - it would have been nice if this new car received an all-new interior.

Performance Much less controversial are the X4’s line-up of engines, because the X4 shares its engine lineup with others in the BMW range, including the 3 Series sedan, 4 Series and X3.

Base model X4’s, the xDrive28i, comes with a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder. It produces 240 hp and 258 ft-lbs of torque. This engine is superb, with plenty of pulling power and surprising amount of get-up-and-go.

Stepping up to the xDrive35i increases both horsepower and torque to an even 300 each. This comes from a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six that is second to none in the industry. Smooth and gutsy, the 3.0-litre is one of the best engines in the world in terms of overall feel and balance of power vs. economy.

BMW’s xDrive AWD system comes standard, obviously, along with an eight-speed automatic transmission. There are no other drivetrain or transmission options available at this time.

BMW has made its name by building driver’s cars.

Its SUVs, while sportier than many of its rivals, are understandably never as spirited as their cars. But the 2015 X4, still using X3 underpinnings, drives much more like a BMW car. It has the best electric power steering unit BMW has made yet.

but because the seats were lowered to provide adequate head-room, passengers may feel like their knees are a bit high.

As can be expected, the X4 has less cargo space than an X3. However, the rear seats are split 40/20/40 to make the space as versatile as possible. Accessing that space has been made easier thanks to the Smart Opener system which opens the tailgate by waving your foot under the rear bumper.

Bhullars to host wrestling event at Oval Western Canadian Age Class Championships set for Jan. 17-18 expected to attract 800 athletes to Richmond Mark Booth

They opened up their family home to keep amateur wrestling alive in Richmond. Now, the Bhullars are bringing the city its first-ever competition.

The Western Canada Age Class Championships take place Jan 16-17 at the Richmond Olympic Oval and culminates months worth of talks with the city officials. The event has been sanctioned by Wrestling B.C. and is expected to attract an estimated 800 school age athletes, ranging from a 12 and under division to juvenile for 17-and-18-yearolds.

providing the space and bleachers, Bhullar and volunteers will have to supply all the equipment by travelling around to Lower Mainland schools to round up enough mats and score clocks. It means some hectic days leading up to the tournament but Bhullar would have it no other way.

The gym on the family’s Sidaway Road property, where Bhullar and his cousin Arjan began their journey to become world class wrestlers, is now home to the Bhullar Wrestling Club where kids have a chance to learn the sport at a

minimal fee. Only insurance costs must be paid, with Bhullar and other coaches volunteering their time. The sessions are filled to capacity.

On Tuesday, the club hosted a Christmas party where all participants were given medals and special awards were also presented.

“A lot of our kids don’t compete yet so this gives them some positive reinforcement and helps inspire them to keep going,” explained Jag. “We only decided to do this because we are from Richmond and we were unwilling to let wrestling

die here. As you can see, we have created a buzz here. To see it growing makes it all worth it to me. This is my passion and my wife Sonia has helped me a ton too with all the paper work.”

The Hilton Vancouver Airport and Executive Airport Plaza have already come on board as tournament sponsors to provide special rates for outof-town athletes.

Richmond softball standout Sierra Sherrit is taking her career to Burnaby Mountain next fall.

The speedy and versatile outfielder is one of two high school recruits from the Lower Mainland to sign National Letters of Intent with Simon Fraser University last week during the NCAA early signing period.

As a member of the Delta Heat, Sherrit competing at the U16 and U18 national championships, winning the All-Canadian All-Star Fielder Award each time. At the 2014 nationals, she posted a .522 batting average with 13 RBIs and 14 runs scored in 11 games, helping the Heat to a silver medal.
