Can the City of Richmond actually regulate language on private property signs?

Outgoing Coun. Evelina Halsey-Brandt has taken the first step towards bringing clarity to the foreign language sign debate by introducing a motion for city staff to investigate the legalities of the city regulating signs on private property.

On Tuesday, during a city council meeting, Halsey-Brandt introduced the sign regulation resolution, which includes asking whether the city can mandate a percentage of English on private signs.

“As the discussion in the community regarding the use of English on signs escalates I think it’s really important that both council and the citizens and residents of Richmond know whether or not council actually has the legal ability to regulate the use of English on signs,” said Halsey-Brandt.

“I hope this can bring some clarity to the issue,” she said.

Mayor Malcolm Brodie agreed.

“I think it’s a central issue in that whole discussion. If we do or we don’t have the legal ability, as you say, that’s going to obviously influence, in a decided manner, if we can go forward,” said the mayor.

The motion passed unanimously after

Coun. Harold Steves noted two kinds of signs may be addressed by staff.

First, signs on private property that are addressing rezoning issues or property sales, he argued, need to be regulated.

Second, he noted non-English signs on private property, that don’t address necessary public information — such as restaurants — are likely out of the city’s jurisdiction.

He cited a recent letter to the Vancouver Sun from former Richmond bylaw manager Wayne Mercer.

“This would be a constitutional issue if any such bylaw initiative was challenged in court,” wrote Mercer.

Steves noted signs on city-owned land are already regulated for English.

Last week, RITE Richmond called on council to take action. It released a statement stating its council candidates — Michael Wolfe and Carol Day — would try to legislate a percentage of English on signs via a bylaw, if elected.

“Be it resolved that staff study the implications, and recommend to council potential steps to address the issue,” stated a RITE news release, citing Aberdeen Centre’s 70 per cent English rule as a “successful model for the city to follow.”

Mayoral candidate Richard Lee also said he wants action to be taken.

Last year, city councillors voted 8-1 to not investigate the matter after they were presented with a citizens petition. Only Coun.

Chak Au dissented.

In addition to raising the point that it creates a community divide, Au also noted that emergency services may be hampered for businesses not displaying English.

Petitioner Kerry Starchuk has most recently taken exception to Chinese signs on school property. Furthermore, she has documents of complaints regarding signs dating back to the late 1990s.

Starchuk says the issue, which some feel fosters disconnections in the community, has been systematically ignored over time.

Fellow independent Jerome Dickey disagreed on his Facebook page, citing logistical issues of bylaw enforcement and that it can drive a wedge in the community.

Dickey said the issue runs deeper than a sign bylaw.

A tentative date has been set for a memorial service for popular Richmondite Norman Wrigglesworth, who died last week, age 88.

Wrigglesworth’s long time friend and executor of his will, John O’Sullivan, said he’s hoping to confirm later this week that a memorial service and celebration of life will be held in the first week of November, with the location to be determined.

Members of the public are welcome to attend to pay their respects and share memories of Wrigglesworth, said O’Sullivan, who’s also arranging a private cremation for his late friend.

In lieu of flowers, people are encouraged to make a donation in Wrigglesworth’s memory to his favourite charity, Norman Wrigglesworth the Richmond Hospital Foundation.

Wrigglesworth died in his sleep at Richmond Hospital last Friday, Oct. 10.

He had been in and out of hospital for a few months with various health issues.

During his life in Richmond, he was best known for having the world’s largest “no smoking” sign on his roof and regularly campaigned against smoking.

The Second World War veteran was also known to many in the city for bringing issues to city council over the decades, illustrating “real citizenship.”

O’Sullivan said his old friend, who is survived by an estranged daughter and grandson, has donated all of his will to charities, including BC Children’s Hospital, the Richmond Hospital Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian Institute for the Blind. Council candidates from the Richmond Community Coalition as well as independent candidate Jerome Dickey all recently announced they would limit their time on council to two, fouryear terms.

The RCC said those elected on its No v. slate would sign a pledge not to run for council after being elected twice.

Meanwhile, Dickey pledged the same limits on his Facebook site.

Both groups cited the importance of having new voices on council on a regular basis.

Finances disclosed In keeping with its initial campaign promise of transparency, RITE Richmond has posted its in-campaign financial disclosures online.

Some RCC members have made small donations to RITE, which appears largely funded by its own candidates.

Ombudsperson needed

The RCC announced parts of its platform Wednesday. Among the highlights, it would attempt to hire an ombudsperson to handle citizen complaints with the City of Richmond.

Incumbent councillor Chak Au said he would vow better access to council and city staff.

The group also announced a tax 15 policy, saying it wants to “stop the tax hike.” It said it would find efficiencies through a “spending review” but not cut services. Coun. Ken Johnston said it would make “no promises.”

RCC’s website was more definitive, stating “your property taxes will go up 15 per cent unless a majority RCC council is elected.”

To date, every political slate has vowed to reign in city spending. The city currently has a three per cent increase to property taxes each year for the next five years.

One per cent is earmarked for city reserves.

More trees toppled at Minoru The City of Richmond is in the midst of cutting down 31 tall, mostly poplar, trees in Minoru Park along Gilbert Road.

The trees will be replaced on a oneto-one ratio, but not all in the same area.

Nineteen oak and birch trees will be planted around Minoru Park, while 12 “other trees” will be planted elsewhere,

according to city spokesperson Ted Townsend, who said the poplar trees were in poor condition and in danger of toppling.

He said the new oak and birch trees will grow broader canopies and won’t face the same health issues common in poplar trees found in Richmond.

New app designed to get users engaged with Richmond A new mobile application created by the City of Richmond for access to information on parks, cultural, recreational and heritage facilities is now available for download.

Gamers reflect larger society

T

he vile spectre of the Montreal Massacre was raised again this week as an unknown would-be terrorist threatened a mass murder of feminists in Utah.

The threats were against Anita Sarkeesian, a Toronto-born cultural critic who was planning to speak at Utah State University. She had to withdraw after local police couldn’t guarantee her safety due to local concealed weapon laws. The goon who caused all this signed his letter with the name of Marc Lepine, the mass murderer who killed 14 women at a Montreal University in 1989.

What did Sarkeesian do to so enrage some anonymous halfwit?

She critiques video games.

Sarkeesian has been the target of an endless flow of rape and death threats over the last few years because of her articles and online videos pointing out that in many games, women exist only as damsels in distress, scantily clad background decoration, or simply to be killed off and avenged by the male characters.

The cretins behind these campaigns against Sarkeesian and others have recently rallied behind the label GamerGate, claiming that they are standing up for, of all things, integrity in game reviewing and journalism. In practice, typing #GamerGate into Twitter will summon a legion of misogynist trolls out of the ether. The GamerGate troops have managed to harass

several women, including Sarkeesian and game developers, into leaving their homes. Their addresses and names of family members were publicized, along with graphic threats to kill them.

If all this sounds incredibly juvenile – sad man-children afraid of icky girls – that’s because it is.

But it’s also something that virtually every woman who writes online about games, comics, sci-fi, sports, or almost any other allegedly male sphere of culture has to deal with.

This isn’t a problem with games, it’s a problem with society.

Those of us who oppose this vile behaviour are in the majority, and we should stand up together to oppose the trolls and support their targets.

If we only had written history from the barbarian side, how would we view Roman architecture, Roman laws, Roman conquests?

What would we think of women in the armed forces if our classical history had been written from the point of view of Boudica’s daughters, not by the men of Rome? Which would we value more – empires, or the trading routes that linked Celts from Ireland to Eastern Europe?

You can turn almost any historical period upside down by looking at it from the point of view of those who didn’t get to write the ending. Women, refugees, religious and ethnic and cultural minorities throughout history have left records, or at least traces. It’s instructive to stand back every now and again and consider how we’d see things if the world had worked out a little differently.

Value for heritage dollar The Editor, Re: “Branscombe shows imprudence,” Letters, Oct. 10.

A recent letter to the editor regarding restoration of the Branscombe House provides a good opportunity to highlight how Richmond taxpayers have received extremely good value in restoring this important heritage home. The local business community donated more than $300,000 to help underwrite its restoration.

Branscombe House is a 1905 Edwardian farmhouse listed on the city’s heritage inventory and an important part of our heritage as one of the first houses built in Steveston. It was home to a prominent local merchant’s family and a good example of architecture of that era.

The city acquired the home in 1987, but delayed restoration, while exploring alternatives for funding. A generous proposal from private sector proponents and the planning of the Railway Greenway Corridor presented a unique opportunity to restore this important home and costeffectively create a valuable hub along the greenway.

City council considered and approved a

partnership with the private sector for the stabilization and restoration of Branscombe House in mid-2012.

Exterior and main floor stabilization and restoration was completed through partnership donation.

The value of this donation was over $305,000. Council approved an additional $405,000 in the 2013 and 2014 capital budgets in order to complete funding the restoration.

As a focal point along the very popular Railway Greenway Corridor, the site provides seating, parking and public bathrooms for the many residents who travel the corridor daily.

The programming plan will see the house used for a variety of public uses, including supporting arts and cultural programs.

Through the partnership with the private sector and sound city planning, the city has restored a valuable historical asset and created new public amenities.

Branscombe House will soon become an important new venue for public programming.

Mimi Horita often finds herself alone in the historic Gulf of Georgia Cannery and has mastered the art of mind over matter in blocking out odd sounds coming from the old building’s collections area and net loft.

P

eterson said the NPI team was keen to investigate the cannery due to its historical significance.

“We just wanted to see what we could uncover there…and we did find something,” she said.

“We were there for one night in July and one night in August, and we were there from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. each night.”

There was also some “activity” during their investigation, which could be explained very easily without the need for exorcism.

“We thought, ‘what is that noise?’ It was too loud to be a ghost,” said Peterson.

“It was kids playing on the roof. We scared them away; they were probably more scared than us, though. They were very eventful evenings for sure.”

If Horita, the cannery’s marketing manager, is reading this, she might want to turn the page now.

There is, most definitely, something “up there,” according to “ghostbusters” from Northern Paranormal Investigations (NPI), who scouted out the loft in the historic Gulf of Georgia Cannery in Steveston.

Over two separate overnight investigations earlier this year, the NPI team recorded what they’re calling a class A EVP — electronic voice phenomena — in the cannery’s loft.

“We caught an amazing, EVP,” said NPI co-founder and case manager Nikki Peterson.

“We’ve recorded a fair amount of EVPs in the past, but we were not expecting what we got at the cannery.

“We were very surprised. It was very clear and very loud.”

Describing how the NPI team goes about its business, Peterson said the first thing they do is scout out the location and then set up their recording equipment.

They then “introduce” themselves to the apparently empty rooms.

“We explain that we’re not here to harm or displace anyone; we explain that we’re just here looking for proof of existence.”

The team uses “trigger objects,” such as a bell, which can be disturbed if there is a presence.

Most of the time, added Peterson, the team doesn’t hear anything until it plays back its audio, “but there were several unexplained events when we were at the cannery and we really want to go

back for a third visit, as it seems like they have ‘visitors.’”

Whether Horita will attend is another matter, altogether.

“Some colleagues have talked of strange sounds and doors occasionally moving on their own,” said Horita.

“We have, thankfully, not had any run-ins of the ghostly kind. I often have to work here in the evening on my own, so I have trained myself not to think too deeply about the noises I hear from behind the walls and upstairs!”

n-keeping with the creepy month of October, the cannery is set to host another series of murder mystery tours.

Over all next weekend, Oct. 25 and 26, Murder at the Cannery will feature a detective taking an audience through an interactive tour of the cannery’s herring reduction exhibit area, where a pre-Cold War story will unfold, along with up to 10 characters, played by actors.

“We have done this in the past, but the script for this one is brand new,” said Mimi Horita, the cannery’s marketing and visitor services manager.

“We had a 1920s theme last year, this time, we’ve went up a couple of decades to the late 1940s and pre-Cold War tensions.

“There will be spy elements in there and it’s going to be more interactive than usual; people are going to be able to vote to determine where the murder story will go.

“The cannery gives us a ready-made set, historical and lifesize, very ambient and it’s cold, so that’s bound to add to it all.”

Each tour can take up to 25 people and is recommended for adults and children above six, as there are loud noises.

Tours will start daily next Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 25 and 26 at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., with advance booking required.

Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $7.50 for seniors, $5 for youth, and can be purchased in person at the cannery, or by calling 604-664-9009. Online tickets are also available at: murderatthecannery. brownpapertickets.com.

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery will also be taking part in the Steveston Merchants’ Association’s Trick or Treat event on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 4-5 p.m. and will have the cannery decorated.

Take a stand on nightflights The Editor, Open letter to prospective mayoral and council candidates running for office in Richmond.

As a long time resident of Richmond and a former representative and co-chair on the Richmond Airport Noise Citizens Advisory Task Force, I, and other concerned Richmond citizens, want to know what is your position on the increasing problem of air traffic noise over Richmond?

And, if elected, what actions will you take to address the impact that night flights air traffic has on the community?

While we recognize that YVR is an important economic engine in the Greater Vancouver area, we are concerned by the increase in night flights between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m.

YVR, in its air noise annual summary, reports that three per cent of total aircraft activity at YVR occurs during night hours.

What it does not report is the impact such flights have on the sleeping patterns of Richmond’s growing population.

Between midnight and 3 a.m., two flights typically depart YVR and another four arrive, followed by

another five arrivals between 3 a.m. and 6 am.

While the number of flights in the context of overall traffic in and out of YVR over 24 hours does not appear unusually high, the noise generated by these flights between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m. presents a serious challenge to our population which, on average, is awakened on the hour by flights departing and arriving at YVR. There are ample studies correlating the impact of air traffic noise, especially at night, on the physical and psychological well-being of people, and while other major international airports, in response to citizen concerns over noise, have introduced curfews on night flights, YVR has ignored citizens’ concerns and continues to permit night flights despite the discomfort and disrupted sleep such flights cause.

Communities that have taken the initiative to control night flights include Frankfurt, which bans flights from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.; Hongqiao International Airport (Shanghai), which bans flights after midnight.

Montreal Dorval (YUL); And Sydney International Airport, which has a total noise abatement policy and night flight curfew.

This is just a partial list, but it shows how other communities and airport authorities have responded to residents’ complaints and concerns about noise from night flights.

Richmond electors want to know where you stand on the issue, and how you will engage YVRAA, NAV Canada, Transport Canada and fellow councillors to introduce a curfew on night flights over Richmond.

As NAV Canada and Transport Canada have accepted night curfews in Montreal and Toronto, the citizens of Richmond and Vancouver should receive similar consideration, respect and treatment.

In the past, the city has called on a select group of citizens to consider the problem, and yet despite the recommendations of the committee the problem of night flights persists; the time has come for this to be openly debated by all candidates for Richmond City Council in open candidate debates or other forums to engage the electorate in advance of the Nov. 15, 2014 municipal election.

Eagle sighting a blessing The Editor, I want Richmond wildlife lovers to know that I spotted four eagles today at No. 3 Road and Williams while waiting for the bus — a phenomenal sight!

The first two were close together, flying in low circles. Then, a third eagle was there, but quite a distance from the other two. They were “talking” a lot, and then a fourth one appeared.

While this was happening, a grandfather and his baby grandson were walking down the road. It was really exciting because the baby picked up on the eagle sounds — kept

looking to the left where the birds were flying.

Granddad finally looked over, but didn’t look high enough — just saw the cars on the road.

The baby was so into this!

And, then, the third eagle flew west into the soon to be sunset; the fourth eagle gained enormous altitude and headed the same way, and then the other two went that way also.

I felt so blessed to see these beautiful animals today — and I think the grandbaby was blessed too, very excited and inspired.

Ten-year-old Emily Oleksiew wears her camouflage belt with pride.

It’s her outward sign of accomplishment after five years of instruction in taekwondo at Sirota’s Alchymy in Steveston, a place specializing in martial arts and life skills development.

The one-on-one lessons have dramatically increased Emily’s coordination, stamina and core strength.

But it’s the fact she now chats with classmates that is one of the most pleasing changes, says Emily’s mom, Gina.

Emily was born with Down syndrome, which in the past has made her somewhat shy and unwilling to talk.

“The lessons have made her much more confident,” Gina said. “She’s more able now to respond to conversations.

It’s been really great to see the progress she’s made.”

The lessons were provided with the assistance of Variety — The Children’s Charity which, this year, will benefit from Emily’s newfound confidence as she sets about to fundraise for the organization through the Variety’s Kid Champions program.

The program’s aim rests on Variety’s belief that children who have special needs can achieve their own victories and be leaders in their community, building teams of supporters and inspiring others to help Variety help more children.

Gina said her daughter is now ready to take on the challenge.

“Before, she would take on something and she’d say, almost in tears, ‘I can’t do it, I can’t do it,’” Gina said. “She’s now developed the ability to say to herself, ‘You know what, I am going to try.’ It’s not something you realize right away, but when she makes those strides, you

‘Cheap’ Richmond fits Chelsea Jiang’s $2M budget Alan Campbell

ichmond’s booming property market, as many people are aware, attracts all sorts from all over.

Few of them, one might assume, come browsing Terra Nova mansions or River Green’s multi-million dollar penthouses looking for a “bargain.”

That was until Chelsea Jiang arrived in the city a couple of weeks ago, sniffing out single-family homes in the Steveston area.

Why was 24-year-old Jiang looking to buy in Richmond?

“My parents love Richmond and they love the restaurants and they love the grocery stores,” said Jiang, a recent honours math grad from the University of B.C., who’s set to star in an online TV reality show called Ultra Rich Asian Girls.

“It’s not that expensive in Richmond; it’s really cheap and I have a budget of $2 million.

I started looking two weeks ago.”

When the News caught up with Ottawaborn Jiang Wednesday, she was in the act of viewing properties in Steveston, ahead of Thursday’s River Rock Theatre launch of the show, which follows the extravagant lives of four young Asian women, living off their wealthy families in the Vancouver area.

“It’s all about the entertainment,” Jiang said of the show, a promo video of which has attracted more than 300,000 hits on YouTube and more than 2.8 million hits in China. “(Going into TV) is part of my path, but not all of it; it’s not going to be my whole career.

“Getting into fashion and running my own business is where my goals are at.”

Jiang, who was driving a Lamborghini earlier this year, but now drives a Range Rover, said she’s developing her own fashion business right now, funded by her parents, who are real estate developers in Regina.

“My parents are helping me financially, but it’s me who’s making the decisions.”

Thrift, Buck unlikely Jiang left Ottawa at age seven to attend school in Beijing. She moved back to Ottawa when she was 14 and came to Vancouver at 18 to study math at UBC. Jiang currently lives in a luxury condo on Marine Drive near UBC — the same building, she says, that Premier Christy Clark called home until a couple of years ago.

In case you’re wondering, you’re unlikely to find Jiang shopping at the local thrift store, with appearances more likely at Leone and Holt Renfrew in Downtown Vancouver.

It’s doubtful you’ll also see her in the Buck & Ear in Steveston, with Yaletown her “hangout” of choice with friends.

Asked if there are comparisons to fellow

reality TV show The Real Housewives of Vancouver, Jiang said she’s not a fan, although she does like the Beverley Hills version of the series.

She wouldn’t say why. Perhaps the Vancouver one was too lowbrow?

Ferraris, Lambos Born and raised in Vancouver, producer and creator of Ultra Rich Asian Girls Kevin Li noticed there were three distinct groups of Chinese-Canadians, “the villagers; the immigrants from Hong Kong fleeing the takeover and the new ones from mainland China.

“The most recent ones are the most interesting ones to me; they’re driving the Ferraris and the Lamborghinis and carrying the expensive handbags,” said Li, who’s spent 17 years in the television industry, as an editor at CityTV and CTV in mainstream news and later as a producer of documentaries and other Asian reality shows.

“People are talking about it and I thought about a year ago, while chatting with friends, that this would be a really good topic and maybe I could make this into a show.”

Li has his own production company, complete with equipment, so, other than some private sponsors, didn’t need too much investment to pull off the show, which premieres on YouTube Sunday, Oct. 26, with a possible 13 episodes in series one.

Indeed, such was the reach of the show, the casting call attracted interest from as far away as Singapore and Taiwan, asking for young women to pitch themselves as possible stars.

“There are lots of people with this lifestyle out there, but not too many with the stories — such as Chelsea and her math honours.”

Out of 40 entrants, Li met with 16 hopefuls, before paring it down to Chelsea and: Flo Z (Florence), who holds a master’s degree from the prestigious Istituto Marangoni Fashion Design school in Milan and speaks Mandarin, English, French and a little Italian; Coco Paris (Coco), at 19, is the youngest of the bunch, is Taiwanese and a singer; Joy is an international student studying fashion marketing and is an aspiring model.

The show itself, which will have English subtitles, is a cross between the millionaires on Rich Kids of Beverley Hills and Keeping up with the Kardashians, according to Li. “For three months, we simply followed them around their daily lives; checking out fashion shows and parties and we filmed them traveling around Europe together,” he said.

“They knew of each other, but didn’t revolve in the same circles.”

As well as living in luxury condos and driving Lamborghinis, Flo’s family owns a Bentley and Rolls Royce.

Rapids honoured as B.C.’s Club of the Year Richmond Rapids were named Club of the Year at the recent Swim B.C. Coaches Conference and Awards Banquet.

The accolade was earned through steadily improved performances in recent years, including the club’s first provincial championship title.

Throughout the recent 2013-2014 season, the Rapids regularly placed athletes on major teams, from provincial to the Canadian Junior National team. The Rapids set four provincial records and one national record — the boys 14-and-under medley relay.

Membership also grew to an all-time high, with over 400 athletes involved in the Watermania based club’s program.

Away from competition, the Rapids presented a well-rounded approach to the sport, including volunteering, education, and unique opportunities. This

included increased coaching certification, officials training, sport psychologists, professional nutrition instruction, and visits from high-level swimmers.

“We are very proud to receive this award,” said head coach Robert Pettifer, “as it represents improvements not only in performance, but in club culture as well. This is a great starting point for us to build on as we chase bigger and more difficult goals.

“Thank you to the hard working athletes and parents who continue to make the Rapids an amazing place to train and race. The success of this club is due to your continued devotion to a vision of greatness.

The club received more good news when longtime Rapid Nicolaas Dekker earned carded athlete status for the 2014-15 season from Swimming Canada.

Dekker will receive toptier funding to train and

compete, which includes training trips, travel meets, any needed equipment and racing suits.

He is the first swimmer to come through the Rapids’ entire program and finish on the national carding list.

He started with the 10-andunder age development group after coming over from summer swimming.

It only took one season to qualify as a provincial age group swimmer. He eventually graduated up to the club’s National level program, working under Pettifer.

Dekker swam for Canada at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Hawaii this summer and is now a first-year student at the University of Alberta.

National level carding is only given to a select group of high-performance athletes. Recipients are expected to improve at international levels for the duration of their carding,

which is reviewed annually for renewal.

What made Dekker a strong pick for Swimming Canada was not a single, golden-moment swim, but a collection of consistent improvements and highlevel dependability for over a year. Regardless of a meet’s importance or

environment, Dekker was regularly achieving personal best times across all events, and simultaneously posting nationally competitive times in butterfly, his strongest stroke.

ith the Macan, Porsche has expanded its range into a whole new class of vehicle. The Macan is the first Porsche compact SUV and this is a significant entry and launch point.

Porsche is not afraid of the comments by critics claiming that the Macan is not a “true” Porsche.

Porsche believes, given some time, those doubters will recognize that the Macan is a true representation of its brand’s 60 years of experience building the 911, Boxster, Cayenne and Panamera.

In fact, from my own perspective, the Macan, and especially the Macan Turbo version, have more of the Porsche DNA than any other non-sports coupes Porsche has ever produced.

Macan means “tiger” in Indonesian and Porsche feels it embodies the spirit of a tiger through its speed, power, elegance and agility.

The new Porsche Macan S has a starting price of $54,300 and the Turbo starts at $82,200. Photo submitted Porsche hopes the Macan will appeal to a larger number of people and welcome a whole new set of customers to the brand.

To start, the Macan will be available in two models, the Macan S and the Macan Turbo.

Design Porsche Chief Designer, Michael Mauer, admits to feeling a lot

of pressure while designing the Macan, “since we are doing so many cars that don’t have any predecessor, it is a little bit more challenging because you are always basically inventing the car.”

The philosophy for the Macan was to make sure it was the sportiest in the compact SUV segment.

Porsche first focused on the

proportions of the Macan, to ensure it retains Porsche branding while providing the muscular, agile look. As a result, it is low and wide and has an aggressive stance that is perhaps the best combination of Porsche sleekness and SUV toughness.

They also made sure that the Macan carried over familiar design elements from its other products, such as the sloping roofline of the 911.

The tail of the Macan is especially interesting; the tail lamps have an interesting, threedimensional character and the whole rear end is very clean, but powerful.

While the Macan shares the same platform as the Audi Q5, it feels and looks like a completely different vehicle.

Performance To effectively make the claim of being the first sportscar in SUV segment, the Macan needs to offer proper sporting potential. Both

available engines certainly provide that character, and its suspension spell out “drive me” loud and clear.

The Macan S comes equipped with a 3.0-litre twin turbo V6 delivering 340 hp. This enables it to accelerate to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds, or 5.2 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package.

The Macan Turbo is the most powerful compact SUV on the market. It is also the first Porsche vehicle to use a 3.6-litre twin turbo V6. This produces 400 hp and rockets to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds, or 4.6 seconds in Sport Chrono trim.

The standard seven-speed PDK transmission is excellent. Whether itís in auto mode, or you’re changing gears using the steering wheel mounted paddles, shifts are quick and smooth.

It probably goes without saying but the Porsche Macan is not the best compact SUV in terms of offroad capabilities. To be fair, it is more than capable for most buyers who may buy this vehicle.
