The Storytime With a Dog program got its start about two years ago at the main library branch at Brighouse, and plans are to expand it to more locations if therapy dogs and their owners are available to volunteer, Au said.

If you’ve walked along the dyke recently, you might be asking yourself: What are those yellow things floating in the Fraser River or stuck on the rocks?

Well, they’re biodegradable, wooden cards, tossed overboard by environmentalists from the Georgia Strait Alliance and Raincoast Conservation Foundation on Tuesday to simulate the rapid dispersion of oil in the event of a failure from Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline, which crosses the river near the Port Mann Bridge.

This was the fourth round of card experiments — which began in October — and the first time the groups dropped cards in the river. They also dropped cards in eight other locations related to pipeline or shipping routes in nearby waters.

The two groups, in concert with the City of Vancouver, have been applying this experiment to protest the planned twinning of the existing pipeline that will see up to a seven-fold increase in tanker traffic in Burrard Inlet.

“Because of what we’ve learned about our oil spill capacity in the region, if there were a major spill today we don’t have the equipment in place or people to respond in any effective way,” said Christianne Wilhelmson, an organizer with the Georgia Strait Alliance.

Last year, the environmentalists released 2,500 cards along the shipping route from Vancouver to the Juan de Fuca Strait. More than 1,000 cards have since been reported from Washington state all the way to Haida Gwaii. Most of the cards washed ashore nearby and within three days.

The results are being used to improve scientist’s understanding of ocean circulation in the Salish Sea. One of the reasons the groups dropped more cards this month is because ocean patterns vary from season to season.

“We know that oil can move on the river or ocean surface for weeks or months. Drift cards give us a broader picture of where and when oil could appear in the long term,” said Raincoast marine biologist Andy Rosenberger.

It could be up to six months before charges are laid in the motor vehicle crash that claimed the life of a cyclist on Sea Island at the end of July.

According to RCMP spokeswoman Sgt. Annie Linteau, that’s not an unusual length of time required to ensure investigators with the force’s ICARS (Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service) have completed a comprehensive analysis prior to submitting it to Crown Counsel for charge approval.

On July 30 Christy Mahy, 36, was on her bike during the late afternoon waiting at the intersection of Russ Baker Way and Gilbert Road when a Pontiac Aztek heading north on Russ Baker Way drove into her.

Mahy later died in hospital.

Linteau said that while she cannot speak to specifics of this case, ICARS must gather evidence from a variety of sources and enlist

the assistance of experts in the course of an investigation.

“These things can take a long time to complete,” she said, adding, “It’s important that a complete package of information is submitted to Crown Counsel.”

Traffic cameras at the intersection will be of no help as they don’t record images.

ICARs’ caseload can also be a factor in the length of time for investigations to be wrapped up, Linteau said.

According to information posted on the RCMP’s provincial website for B.C., ICARS is comprised of 22 employees — two support staff and 20 officers — and is responsible for investigating all vehicle collisions that result in serious injury or death in the RCMP’s Lower Mainland District. That includes 19 communities stretching from North Vancouver to Hope.

Figures show that in the 2012/2013 reporting period, ICARS responded to 227 calls — 13 of those were from Richmond.

Birdhouse project stokes pride at co-op Philip Raphael

A group of residents at the Terra Nova Housing Co-operative have sparked a greater sense of home by building a place for their fine-feathered friends to live.

Perched on the side of a tall, white trellis at the entrance to the co-op are a collection of 85, brightly coloured, hand-crafted birdhouses that act as a point of pride and a friendly welcome to the tidy, 73-unit development.

“See that one, I call it the bed and breakfast,” says Aki Khoshaba, a 12-year resident who spearheaded the project to build, decorate and install the diminutive domiciles.

“It’s got three levels.”

Khoshaba drew on his art and design background to fashion the wooden birdhouses which each have a distinctive look, ranging from the white painted,

Khoshaba had been mulling the plan for the last two years and originally wanted to install the birdhouses in a large tree on the interior of property. That switched when he had the idea to fix them to a trellis at the entrance for more than just the co-op’s residents to see.

“I thought, why not use them as a signal, you

know,” he said, “that would make people look for the birdhouses instead of just the address.

“It would act like a big, bright beacon.”

After getting the approval of the co-op’s board, Khoshaba went to work in his garage fashioning the birdhouses in his spare time.

Then, residents were invited to gather for a painting party to not only add a splash of colour to the homes, but spark a sense of kinship.

“This has brought us a lot closer together,” said Laurie Scott, the co-op board’s president. “There are people

taking part you wouldn’t normally see.

“It’s become bigger.

This isn’t just about the birdhouses. It’s about us getting together and socializing,” she added.

“People are talking about it.

It’s a now a focal point and we’re very proud of the fact it’s not just about us now, but the neighbourhood.”

Many of those strolling past the co-op’s front driveway have been stopping to view the new birdhouse community and even snap pictures on their cellphones.

“Everybody wants to chat about it. They have

“It’s been great for the neighbourhood, and us, as well.”

A formal ribbon-cutting ceremony last weekend may have marked the completion of the birdhouse project, but thanks to the new-found community spirit it has instilled there are plans are to expand the effort next spring and add new shrubbery and a small pond that would be lit up at night.

“People here are really motivated now to take up other projects,” Khoshaba said. “It’s really great to see.”

Steveston resident Sheila Tynan is one of Richmond’s rare faces of ALS and this Saturday at high noon she’ll be asking the public to come meet her at Garry Point Park to take the ice bucket challenge, a viral fundraising activity that is sweeping across the globe via social media.

Tynan, now 62, was diagnosed with ALS in October 2011. By all accounts she was a fit, healthy person after delivering mail in the Lower Mainland for 30 years at Canada Post.

“I got diagnosed very quickly, ” said Tynan.

Tynan was given a de facto death sentence with the diagnosis. The disease rapidly deteriorates a person’s neuromuscular system.

Senses become impaired, muscles degenerate, and eventually paralysis sets in. There is no effective treatment and cure, to date. Most people with ALS die within two to five years.

“At least once a week I go to do something that I did the previous week and I can’t do it,” said Tynan, whose speech is now slipping.

Nevertheless, Tynan has good spirits and, as her spouse Margaret Hobson points out, she’s still able to have a laugh about things.

“Fortunately, Sheila is a very positive person and I’m the grumpy one. She tries to do things when she can, but unfortunately some things are impossible,” said Hobson.

Hobson quickly retorted.

Tynan is now bound to a wheelchair. On Friday she was outfitted with a new one from the ALS Society of BC, which is a major part of Tynan’s support network.

“I have the ALS Society of BC who are providing us with all the equipment and support like a psychologist. I also have a great circle of friends and, of course, my number one, my spouse,” said Tynan.

ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a relatively rare illness as only 2,500-3,000 Canadians are afflicted with it.

T

he World Health Organization is calling for heavier regulations for e-cigarettes, including banning their use indoors and keeping them out of the hands of minors.

For the uninitiated, an ecigarette is a battery-powered cylinder that vaporizes water and other ingredients for the user to inhale and exhale like a cigarette. They’re available in different flavours and concentrations of nicotine.

And if you haven’t noticed, they’re everywhere.

But as our laws only address tobacco use, so far e-cigarettes

exist in a bureaucratic noman’s-land.

E-cigs are new enough that many of their risks and benefits remain unknown. Though they haven’t been proven to work as quit-smoking aids, they’re certainly popular for that purpose and contain much lower concentrations of harmful ingredients than regular cigarettes.

Probably the biggest concerns about e-cigs are their potential impacts on minors. Nicotine is harmful to developing brains. More concerning, a recent study pointed to teens who smoke e-

cigs as being more likely to try the real thing. That represents a step backwards.

As a society, we’ve made great progress in discouraging smoking to the point where seeing someone exhale a puff of smoke inside a restaurant or office would have us reaching for a fire extinguisher.

It feels regressive to allow that sight to become “normal” again.

That’s reason enough to welcome the WHO’s suggestions and — as many other jurisdictions have done — set some limits on how we give ourselves the vapours.

The weirdest part of the Kallikak story is that it found a foothold in popular culture.

In the 1910s, there was talk of a Broadway play. Then in 1977, CBS premiered a sitcom called The Kallikaks, about a family of backwoods hillbillies feuding with another family named Jukes. It lasted five episodes.

One of the worst parts of this story is that Goddard didn’t go to his grave screaming about the marching morons. He actually renounced many of his views by the 1920s, and admitted his research was flawed.

No room to grieve The Editor.

The day my brother died, I went down to the river to a spot that often brought me solace.

That spot is now covered with 10 benches, numerous planters, a picnic table, and now a hand-made shrine to someone else.

The Dover dog pen is down with a petition of 179 signatures against it, and South Arm’s dog pen went up with a staggering 532 people signing the petition not to have the pilot project go up in the designated location.

What is going on? We made it clear to the city that we do not want this dog pen in this location. We have offered alternate locations. The one in the park is located bordering Williams Road, has a nice stretch of green field, nice large trees for shade and has easier access to providing a water fountain for our pets.

Letters were sent to the mayor and councillors, but to no avail.

We are in disbelief the city would ignore the petition and have the audacity to put the dog pen up in spite of our protest.

It sends us the message, don’t bother

saying anything, we decide. I thought we were in a democracy, but I guess it is only an illusion.

Also, we object to the notice on the fence saying this project is up with consultation with the community. We all know that no consultation ever happened. These are false allegations. Unless the city could provide proof, it should be erased. It never was erased, but a second panel went up and we now have an invitation for feedback of the dog pen with the parks board contact.

We were given a different fence, less obtrusive than the one erected for the pilot project in McCallum Park; why?

Is it because of the 532 people opposing this dog pen location, so the bitter pill that you handed us, would be easier to swallow?

Library launches into new age with old tenet Ideas, imagination and information for all, remains the mainstay of public library

throng of curious onlookers, from young children to seniors, stand and gape at the rapid precision movement of the Makerbot Replicator 2’s inkjet printhead. It is, indeed, a marvel to watch the desktop machine etch, layer by layer, a tiny, three-dimensional figurine right before your eyes. Of course, printing three-dimensional items could take up to minutes, even hours, depending on the scale, complexity and desired resolution (i.e. higher resolution equals smoother cuts and edges) of the design.

The particular MakerBot in action has been pumping out small to medium-sized objects for the last few weeks at Brighouse Richmond Public Library and kids of all ages seem to enjoy it immensely, though few understand the technology.

Making them understand is the ultimate goal of any library, says Susan Walters, Richmond’s deputy chief librarian. “Our role is to educate.”

Yoko — as per the yellow sticky-note stuck to its PVC exterior — is just one of three desktop machines stationed at the Brighouse branch. The others, John and Sean, make up the small 3D printing contingent within the library’s dedicated e-space dubbed the “Launchpad.”

This is the library’s re-positioning for the future, or at least preparation to embrace the ensuing change.

It’s an electronic age, explains Walters. 3D printing is just the latest edge of the technological revolution. Helping the cause are the inventions and digital improvements to traditional constructs like books, distribution of music, video and the news. But the library is not interested in simply promoting technology for technology sake, explains Walters. Rather, it’s aim, is (as it’s always been) to provide greater access to a wide range of information and ideas. The growing movement within the library is to adopt the digital world, to inspire innovation and creativity by providing the portal to a myriad of possibilities.

The Launchpad “Taking you to tomorrow” is written in large white font on the banner that streams across the library’s Launchpad showcase. This hub, a

small cross section on the first floor of the library, demarcates the encroachment of an ever-expanding e-lifestyle. This isn’t something new, but the advancements certainly are.

Ebooks, audio, evideo, magazines, music and enews represent the core facets of the library’s Go Digital movement, however not all are keen to change.

“After public consultations with members of the community, we found that about fifty per cent of respondents were still rooted to the traditional medium,” says Walters. “This is the challenge.”

Serving all ages is a critical tenet of the library and Walters says there are currently three categories library users fall into.

There are the traditionalists who still believe print is king, there are those who are 100 per cent digital and then there are those who fall somewhere between.

With such a spectrum, it is obviously impossible to cater to all needs with a one-size-fits-all approach, explains Walters.

The Launchpad is therefore, and as the name suggests, a jumping off point. It’s a space, staffed full-time, designed to bring everything electronically related, into one place, for users to visit, view, interact and use. In essence, it’s the digital world in a physical space.

As Walters explains, the library is one place in the community where everyone can come to and access a wide range of resources.

Technology is simply affecting those resources, inspiring creativity and imagination, no matter the format or medium. The Library is therefore in the midst of change and the Launchpad signifies the move to blend old needs operating via new platforms.

Despite the estimated 50/50 split between traditionalists and newage embracers as per the recent public consultation, there has been a steady hike in e-usage.

Kat Lucas, eServices coordinator for the Richmond Library says, over the four years or so since ebook lending was introduced, the numbers have jumped from around 20,000 checkouts and downloads in 2010 to about 80,000 in 2013 (the numbers for 2014 are not yet available).

This increase of users year-over-year led to the library purchasing 25 Kobo ereaders as part of a new e-lending service. There are 15 designated for adult use, five for kids and five for teens, says Lucas.

Up to 10 books can be checked out at any one time and can be held for 21 days. At the end of the lending period, the book is “returned” automatically, extinguishing any late-fee concerns and enhancing convenience for the user. In addition, there’s no way to damage the book, although caution over the ereader’s condition must be exercised if it is not your own.

Publisher pricing The surprising note or myth is that digital is cheaper — and perhaps it is, but publishers aren’t charging less. Lucas says publishers ascribe different levels of cost in relation to a digital product, be it a piece of popular fiction, non-fiction or a children’s book. To compare, for example, a hardcopy book could be bought at $30 a piece by any one library. A set of 10 or 20 could be purchased with the publisher knowing these copies would potentially require repurchasing at a later date due to wear and tear. see The library › page 11

‘The library is an equalizing force’ The same is not the case with digital products, thus the cost per copy comes at an inflated rate, set by publishers, each of whom ascribe different price tags. One publishing house could set the cost at $100 per year, per digital copy of a book, that the library can lend to one user at a time.

Other publishers may set the rate at $90, or $75 per book. In short, the logistics are by no means standardized as is the case with the traditional print medium.

Nonetheless, the library works to update its catalogue of ebooks — by far the most popular electronic borrowing product — with the latest addition being a collection of Chinese ebooks.

The demand is there, Lucas says of digital products. But just as the e-movement begins to harden into the mainstream, and the library grapples with the change, an even greater shift to embracing creativity and self-service is underway and the Library remains at the forefront.

Makerspaces emerging 3D printing signals an embracement of nextgeneration technology and the advent of what’s being called “makerspaces.”

“A lot of libraries are beginning to include these kinds of spaces,” says Ray Lam, marketing and communications coordinator at Richmond Public Library. He admits, Richmond isn’t leading the charge, but they aren’t far behind the pioneers.

The goal is not to transmogrify the library into a digital wonderland, but rather to do what it’s always done which is to educate and enlighten the community — hence the hiring of innovator-inresidence Graeme Bennett.

Bennett specializes in 3D printing, both in use and construction of the devices, and he says the technology is something that, while still in its infancy, is an absolutely revolutionary technology.

To churn out a 3D work of art, it begins by constructing a 3D design within CAD (computeraided design) software. After the design is complete, the CAD software will provide you with a STL (Standard Tessellation Language) formatted file. This is the format most, if not all, 3D printer software can read.

Graeme Bennett, innovator-in-residence at Richmond Public Library’s Brighouse branch, explains what the 3D printer can do — such as make a Venus de Milo replica.

There are several open source programs like 3dtin, Sketchup, OpenSCAD, Wings3D, and Blender that beginners can use to play around with, in addition to several commercial applications currently in the market. Conversely, 3D scanning technology is slowly growing into a viable reality whereby an object could be placed on a device and a 3D rendering is accomplished via contact or noncontact (light reflection or radiation) processes.

Though these devices are expensive, progress is being made. U.S. company TRNIO, for instance, released an app that can turn an iPhone into a 3D scanning machine, though with considerable restrictions.

Makerbot also makes a 3D scanner for under $1,000, but it too is a rather small device thereby limiting what objects can be scanned.

After acquisition of a CAD, it’s just a matter of uploading the file onto a standard SD card and loading it into your 3D printer, like the MakerBot Replica 2, and presto! In a matter of minutes (or hours) your 3D brain-child is now a reality.

How well your design functions, however, is contingent on the design and the building filament (i.e. the 3D “ink” or product) used.

The Makerbot Replicator 2 uses PLA filament which, as Bennett explains, is corn starch based, making the products produced biodegradable.

Bennett advises that almost anything with a pastelike texture can be utilized as a filament. In China, for example, a construction firm is already in the midst of producing 3D printed homes at a cost below US$5,000.

One UK-based company, Choc Edge, already works to print exquisite and intricate chocolate creations.

Another company works to turn sugar-based filament into complex constructs you can eat, admire or both (see 3D Systems’ sugar lab to see sweet crystalline creations).

Bennett speculates the future of 3D printing is far-reaching, though there’s still much room to progress. It boils down to enhancing durability to match the strength of traditional parts and products. Furthermore, crafting just small objects,

In the ensuing months, Walters and Lam insist the initiative is to open the space up for members of the community to come and access the 3D printers for their own, unique projects.

From Emilia-Romagna we travel northeast to Verona for our next round. I don’t believe I’ve ever tasted a wine produced from so many grape varieties! The 2011 Monte del Fra Ca del Magro Custoza ($19.99) has eight different types with the majority being Garganega and Trebbiano, along with Chardonnay and Riesling.

Enjoy with barbecued sockeye salmon, a grilled rib-eye with a few ounces from the bottle added to the pan, or a pizza.

The challenge is on as local producers, vendors and growers fight it out for the heart and votes of residents of Richmond and beyond.

On Tuesday voting will begin for the second annual We Heart Local Awards, where people can select their favourite local businesses to compete in one of 15 categories, such as Favourite Farmers’ Market to Favourite Local Winery.

The event, which debuted just last year, hopes to unit the community, while supporting local producers in the province.

Lush Berry Farms, is just one of the Richmond contendors. The local berry farm, which has been operating since 1909, is run by four siblings.

Lush Berry has been nominated in the Local Orchard or Fruit Supplier category, thanks to their 100 per cent blueberry jams, juices and smoothies.

Nominations can still be made until Tuesday. After that, anyone living in B.C. can vote for their favourite local producer, vendor or grower until Sept. 16. All voters will be placed in a weekly draw for a chance to win a

$100 gift card for the farmer’s market of their choice.

In addition, voters will also be entered in a grand-prize draw for a three-night stay at the Taku Cookery Resort and Marina, valued at $2,000. Last year, the contest saw more than 10,000 votes for 230 competing nominees.

We Heart Local hopes that this year’s turnout will be even larger, and with the strong start they’ve gotten off to (161 nominees already selected) such results seem possible.

The We Heart Local Partnership (previously Buy Local. Eat Natural) is a not-for-profit group with support from the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture and the B.C. Agriculture Council, as well as associations such as the B.C. Association of Farmers’ Markets and the BC Dairy Association.

As a parent, getting ready for school can seem like an overwhelming number of last minute tasks to complete. When looking at this time of year, I always recommend to parents to categorize your thoughts and actions in two realms: the first is shopping for objects that are needed for school such as paper, pencils, erasers, and the second is mentally preparing kids for school.

The second preparation is often overlooked in the chaos of the end of holidays, so I have focused on this. Here are some suggestions to help your child prepare mentally for school: 1. Watch how you are talking about getting ready for school: are you discussing the tasks of buying new clothes more than what is needed to get their minds ready?

2. Talk about their successes from last year, show an excitement for what is to come.

3. Recognize the fact that many students are very fearful of the first day of school.

Have a frank conversation about what their fears may be. Tell them that these fears are normal and tell them that most students feel the same way on their first day of school.

Their fears often come from the fear of not being accepted by others, therefore they may fear the following: ! Looking or acting dumb because they don’t

understand something. !. Not fitting in socially with students in their classes. ! Not having a friend to play with at recess time, or a person to sit with during lunch time. ! Getting lost in the school. ! Not wearing the right clothes that are seen as “in”, or not having the right haircut. ! The teacher may not like them. ! For bright students, their fear may be that they will be bored.

4. Sit down and talk about their class schedule and their after-school activities.

5. Purposefully set aside some time before school starts to go over basic skills. This would include: ! Reading – read a passage or a book that will stretch their vocabulary, strengthen their grammar, and improve their reading speed.

Work on reading basic words for students going into grade 1. ! Math facts – no matter what grade, all students should be practicing their facts. This means practicing to a point of automaticity, so speed is also important.

No matter what you do, the most valuable gift your can give your child is to talk about education as a critically important part of their lives. It is not to be taken for granted.

Comic books and the reluctant reader Comic books have often been looked at as a second-rate form of literature. Educators and parents, alike, have long preferred books that were heavy on text and light on illustrations.

However, a new generation of teachers are rediscovering the immense value of these texts.

While not all comic books are suited for children and teens, they are a powerful and useful genre for the development of a student’s capacity to comprehend and analyze literature, while dramatically improving their proficiency in Language Arts. Here are a few reasons why children should read comic books.

1. Their lexicon of complex words is higher than most publications In a published study of over 1,000 comics and their inclusion of higher order words, most comic books and graphic novels featured an astonishing 36 - 76 per cent of their text as representative of language found in senior secondary school and college/university placement tests. Most other periodicals and newspapers only garnered 14 per cent of these higher lexicon words.

2. Improvement of memory skills With the world becoming very media/ visually literate, someone who is learning

English or is a reluctant reader/writer could use the comic book as a means of engaging a sense of prediction and revision at the same time, by following sequential design, yet being able to visually flip back and restore the immediate visual hit again and again.

This informed memory access (I.M.A.) and renewal is central to learning English.

3. Introduction to non-linear storytelling Many comic book writers tend to construct story arcs, over long periods of time. This affords the reader some time to contemplate the story. Even though the text might be presented in a chronological and sequential text-to-image presentation, the story arc can jump from past to present, and to future, all in the same narrative.

The most salient point regarding the genre is that students will self-select what they wish to read. The revival of comic books can be married to the inclusion of a variety of texts that go below and beyond a reader’s current ability. Comic books and graphic novels are gateways to success in literacy, at any level of ability.

Canada’s Equestrian University-Preparatory High School for Girls

Richmond’s independent, faith-based schools will enter the 2014 school year aiming to not only guide students with their own beliefs, but also teach about other religious practices.

“We will extend to different schools, even public schools,” noted Anthony Scopa, principal of Az-Zahraa Islamic Academy for elementary students.

Faith-based schools follow curriculum set by the Ministry of Education and as such must teach students about all religions.

But Richmond schools go beyond the textbook.

Richmond Christian Secondary is the only faith-based school to offer Grade 12 curriculum. As principal Jason Paul notes, the discipleship program allows students to explore the multi-faith community at large.

They do it “to learn and understand key concepts, to understand their world view and synthesize the problem of evil, the universe and how it’s made and is there anything in the

afterlife and what they hold sacred and true,” said Paul.

What about atheists?

“We definitely dive into that and discuss how there’s no perfect world view. So we will discuss and critique all world views including our own,” he said.

Students will be asked to present on what they’ve learned. Most projects typically take an entire month. Paul hopes the students are better able to answer three questions: Who am I? How did I get here? What is my purpose?

Paul’s program is an in-depth study of theology for older students; younger students, however, typically take on a more communitybased, active-learning approach, said Scopa.

For instance, last year Az-Zahraa and Richmond Jewish Day School partnered up to make meals for low-income and homeless residents in Vancouver.

Scopa, a sports fan, hopes to interact with other schools through physical activity this year.

He will be working closely with RJDS principal Abba Brodt.

“We don’t get into matters of deep theology but we do a lot of intramural programs with different schools on our street. You find commonalities,” said Brodt.

When you think of German luxury autos, which name brands first spring to mind?

If you refer to the Teutonic “Big Three” you’d be including Mercedes Benz, BMW and Audi.

Those three, in that order, represented the top German sellers in the Canadian luxury market segment, according to goodcarbadcar.net which tracks sales figures for all makes.

And while third place Audi has ground to make up on the other two — last year Audi sold 20,560 vehicles compared to BMW’s 31,710 and M-B’s 34,781 — the four-ringed luxury division of Volkswagen Group showed the best percentage increase among the three in sales since 2011.

How will that trend fair going forward?

Much of that may depend on the success of the 2015 Audi A3, the entry-level model car in Canada.

Photo submitted With a base price of $31,100, it’s hard to consider the A3 to be classed as the affordable Audi, but you do acquire quite a bit of performance and high-tech wizardry in the all new model.

On the driving side, under the bonnet you get a small displacement (1.8 litre), in-line, 16-valve, four-cylinder engine which cranks out a respectable 170 horsepower and an impressive 199 pound-feet of torque.

According to Audi’s figures, that’s good enough to vault your from a standing start to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds, and achieve a top speed of 209 km/h.

While not many owners will try and crack that last number, what they will experience is Audi’s commitment to luxury and technology in the cabin.

Long gone are the days of needing a map to navigate your way around the cluttered

dashboard and console’s switchgear that stared back at you in a uniformed, red glow.

Today, Audi’s are a study in logical placement and easily identifiable dials, buttons and knobs in soft lighting. There’s nothing left to guesswork as the tach and speedometer are clearly viewable through the spokes of the leather-wrapped steering wheel.

A pair of rolling switches on the spokes allow you to scroll through various driving-related readouts displayed on a small screen dead centre of the gauge cluster resulting in little distraction and no need for your hands to leave the wheel.

And as technology provides greater connectivity and increased interaction between occupants and their cars, Audi has smoothed that journey for navigation, communication and internal climate systems with a 5.8-inch information screen that pops up from the central portion of the upper dash.

Taking a page out of the personal computing playbook, a touchsensitive area on the surface of a large, rotary control wheel located on the centre console allows easy and intuitive input of information by using your fingertip to trace the desired letters and numbers for cellphone calls or navigation details.

The system also allows you to access social media (Facebook, Twitter) accounts and news sources that can even be read to you instead of having to scan the text.

In navigation mode, the technology employs Google searches so you can find specific sites by simply entering the request. And you can also tap into Google’s Street View system to make sure you are on the right track.

Judging by what’s packed into the A3 in terms of performance and tech, the newest offering from Audi seems to be following the right path.

The labour dispute involving B.C. teachers could cause havoc with the high school football season, especially right here in Richmond.

While the majority of programs began practising last week in preparation for upcoming exhibition games, the Hugh Boyd Trojans are one of just two teams in the province that have yet to step on the field.

With outside community coaches involved in the game more than ever before, Boyd and Cloverdale’s Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers still lean on volunteer teachers.

Brothers Bill and Bruce Haddow have been coaching for nearly 40 years and have been the heart and soul of Trojans football since the 1990s. Their dedication and determination have resulted in the program’s survival, longer after once traditional powerhouses at Richmond High and Steveston folded.

Boyd was scheduled to hit the practice field this week.

All sessions, including a controlled scrimmage with the South Delta Sun Devils, have been scrapped. Now, the team’s first exhibition game, scheduled for Sept. 6 against Parksville’s Ballenas

Whalers, is also likely to be postponed unless there is immediate labour peace.

“Deep down, of course I want to be out there on the field,” said Bill Haddow, who has been head coach of the school’s senior team the last several years. “But we are in a labour dispute and, as teachers, are not crossing the picket line. We had a meeting last week to explain the situation to the kids and parents. I just hope it gets resolved soon.”

Haddow is also concerned about the ramifications once there is a settlement.

Other programs have plans in place should the strike/lockout continue next week when schools are scheduled to re-open.

Equipment will be removed from the schools prior to next Tuesday and practice sessions will be held on nearby community fields.

They have also been booked to potentially host preseason games as well.

The B.C. High School Football Association has approved scheduled exhibition play but will push back the start of league play into October should the labour dispute linger.

The Trojans are concerned just how far behind they are going to be once they finally get the opportunity to proceed with the season.

Longtime Hugh Boyd Trojans football coach Bill Haddow (in yellow) is hoping the B.C. teachers’ strike/lockout will be resolved soon to get him back on the field. Practices were cancelled this week and the team’s first exhibition game is in jeopardy.

“For the most part, community coaches really don’t seemed to care about the situation and just want to proceed with everything,” said Haddow. “We didn’t even have a spring camp (back in June) either. How fair is it going into our first league game if we have

had only five practices and our opponent has had 30, never mind a few exhibition games as well?

“We do have community coaches working with us but, first and foremost, they are our friends too and respect what we are doing as teachers. I just wish

everyone was more on the same page but that’s up to the association.”

Once the Trojans do get back on the field, the expectations are high for the senior team which should not only be in position to make the playoffs but be a threat too.

“I really like the look of what we potentially have,” added Haddow. “It will probably be the best team we have had in the last four or five years. It’s a good dedicated group of players that was willing to spend some time in the weight room too.”

Chuckers help B.C. teams earn runner-up finishes It was another agonizingly close call for a couple of Richmond Chuckers — this time as pick-up players for the Abbotsford Angels at last weekend’s Baseball Canada Pee Wee AAA National Championships in London, Ontario.

Peter Broderick and Josh Moscovitz were both added to the Angels’ roster and nearly returned home with the gold medal. Team B.C. reached the final before dropping a heartbreaking 11-10 decision to Brampton.

The see-saw battle featured several lead changes, including the Angels jumping out to a 10-8 advantage in the sixth inning on a three-run homer. However, Brampton answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, then completed the comeback with a run in the seventh for the walk off win.

B.C. had opened the championships with a 6-4 loss to Brampton before battling back in round-robin play with wins over Quebec and Nova Scotia to earn a semi-final berth.

Abbotsford then blanked London 7-0 to earn another shot at Brampton.

It was a familiar script for Broderick and Moscovitz two weeks earlier at the provincial championships where the same Angels team rallied late to eliminate Richmond in the semi-finals. The Chuckers took a 6-5 lead
