The News takes a look at current and past celebrations, and some wacky traditions the River Rock Casino Resort that range from a blast from the past of ’80s retro music, to some big band sounds for you to gently sway to on the dance floor. “New Year’s Eve, it’s our busiest day of the year,” said Roland Monteiro, the resort’s general manager, adding that usually all of the 393 hotel rooms are booked. “And this year we have pretty much something for everyone aged 20 to 80.” The night’s headliner is 1980s girl band The Go-Go’s which rose to fame on the strength of hit singles including We Got The Beat, Our Lips Are Sealed and Vacation. “We thought to ourselves, what would transcend a number of generations,” Monteiro said, “and we came up with the decade of the ’80s. People in their 20s think the music is

pretty cool in a retro kind of way. And those in their 30s to 50s remember it from their own childhoods. The Go-Go’s will be playing at the River Rock Show Theatre and the event includes dinner. If you are looking for a more laid back, traditional way to usher in 2014 with some big band sounds and slow dancing, the River Rock Casino Resort also has that with legendary Vancouver bandleader Dal Richards and his Orchestra performing in the Whistler Ballroom. Richards, 95, is certainly no stranger to New Year’s Eve shows — this year marks his 78th consecutive show. For 25 years — 1940 to 1965 — he and his band were part of a cross-Canada New
Year’s Eve radio show on CBC. Richards and his orchestra would do their set from the Panorama Roof location at the Hotel Vancouver, and due to the time zone shifts across the country had the distinction of signing off the broadcast each year. “That was pretty exciting for listeners to enjoy bands from different cities, and different locations,” said Richards. Richards’ first New Year’s gig was at a small hall on West 6th Avenue, east of Granville Street in Vancouver. “It was a little parish hall, and I was still in high school at the time,” Richards said. “It paid $10. Very few people in Richmond even knew they existed, let alone where they’re located. Many city council members, as well, were apparently unaware there was a medical marijuana research facility slap, bang in their municipality. In all fairness, due to the sensitive nature of the business it’s in, MediJean prefers to keep its loca-
tion low key, saying only that it’s based near an RCMP detachment. Starting April 1 next year, Health Canada is exiting the medical marijuana business and the federal government will phase out the current program in favour of having small businesses retail medical marijuana, at market rates. And ever since the City of Richmond approved in November the formation of a new bylaw restricting the growth of medical marijuana grow-
ing facilities, it’s become increasingly difficult for MediJean to fly under the radar. “(Health Canada’s move) is something every municipality is struggling with,” said MediJean’s chief strategy officer, Anton Mattadeen, from the year-old company’s research and development base in Richmond. “When you say ‘medical marijuana,’ no one ever hears the medical part, and there’s still lots of see MediJean page 4

one, but when we got into this, we recognized it wasn’t all about growing and selling,” explained Mattadeen. “There’s a patient, a doctor and a community involved. Achieving the best practices and highest quality is very important to us. “We’ve spent the last year planning for this and got our research and development licence in August.” MediJean, which also has a production facility in the same Richmond building ready and waiting, has collected 224 marijuana strains from around the world and has brought them to its highsecurity laboratory to break the plants down to DNA levels and breed them to treat disease. MediJean’s ultimate goal is to eventually set up production capacity on a global scale to supply patients with treatments for serious illnesses, such as cancer, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy. “I was working in the technology and communications industry and if you had told me two years ago that I would now be doing this, I would have said you were crazy,” said Mattadeen, of the decision to help get MediJean off the ground. “To get in on the ground floor on something like this is an incredible opportunity.”

What to do with packaging? Christmas is often referred to as the happiest time of the year. But unfortunately for the environment, it’s also one of the most wasteful. And that’s something Richmond-headquartered London Drugs is hoping to change with some easy to implement ideas to reduce what goes into landfills across the country. According to Stats Canada, the annual waste generated in Canada from giftwrapping and shopping bags equals about 545,000 tonnes. And if every Canadian family was able to reduce one kilogram during the Christmas holidays that would eliminate 34,000 tonnes of garbage. “There are a number of things consumers can do before and after Christmas to significantly reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfills over the holiday season,” said Maury McCausland, administrator of retail operations for Richmondbased London Drugs. The most important thing is to be diligent about your waste decisions over the holidays, and make the effort to bring in those unwanted items that can so easily be put into the trash. “In the excitement of a new gift, we need to remember we can bring back most the materials that come with that gift,” McCausland said, adding this is the prime time for people to get a new tech gadget gift, but many people aren’t sure what to do with their old appliance or device once they upgrade.

Customers can also bring back their Styrofoam, cosmetics and candy wrappers, among other items. For years, London Drugs has offered its Bring Back the Pack, the company’s take-back program (greendeal.ca/bringback-the-pack) for anything purchased at their stores. All you need to do is drop off your packaging at customer service as you leave the store, or bring it back later with a receipt.

Another pedestrian in hospital Collision with car at No. 1 and Blundell roads closes intersection BY ALAN CAMPBELL

A 35-year-old man is in hospital in serious condition after yet another pedestrian accident on Friday night. The man underwent surgery after being struck by a car near No. 1 and Blundell roads.

The collision happened around 11 p.m. and Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Stephanie Ashton said the area was shut down while investigators tried to get to the bottom of what happened. At this point, added Ashton, there is no indication speed was a factor in the crash.

The driver of the car remained at the scene and cooperated with police investigators. Anyone who witnessed the crash should contact Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212. An elderly pedestrian died last week after being hit by a car, bringing Richmond’s death toll on the roads to nine for 2013.

Opportunity to Comment on YVR Add Fare Variance The South Coast British Columbia Transportation Commission, the independent regulator of TransLink, is seeking public comment on TransLink’s recent application to vary the YVR AddFare. Specifically, TransLink wishes to apply the YVR AddFare to DayPasses purchased on Sea Island and single fares purchased with Compass Card Stored Value for trips leaving Sea Island. Customers travelling with monthly passes (and certain other passes) will be exempt from the YVR AddFare. TransLink also intends to exempt airport employees and Burkeville residents. Heart-warming gesture
The Editor, On Dec. 7, 2011, Richmond News published an article about Janet Flamand, called “Richmond mother knits to remember.” I was hoping you could forward this message and attached photo to her or perhaps publish them so I can show her my gratitude. I was at Lansdowne mall last Saturday when an elderly lady rolled her shopping cart towards my baby stroller. I thought that I was in her pathway so tried to move away. Then she began speaking and I thought that she was peddling her wares. Instead, she said, “I have a gift for your baby.” She handed me a package and I stammered “thank you.” Before I could ask any questions she hurried away. The package contained a beautiful hand crocheted blue blanket and a note that read: “Dearest Child, this little Afghan is given to you as a gift in memory of James Daniel Flamand, “Sonny.” Beloved son, brother and uncle, may this gift warm your heart and soul as well as your body.” A quick search of James Flamand brought me to a 2011 Richmond News article. Janet has crocheted thousands of toques and blankets and has donated them to children all across Canada in honour of her late son, who died at age 33 in 1983. The following is a letter of appreciation to Janet: Dear Janet, Thank you for surprising me with your beautiful blanket. Your story has touched me deeply and your gift to my son, Grayson, will be greatly cherished. My son is only four months old, but when he grows a little older, I will teach him what your gift represents. I will tell him that the dedication you put into making these blankets is a testament to a mother’s love for her son. The blanket represents the difficulties a young, vulnerable child can encounter in life and the strength he will need to overcome them. The unexpected gift shows that kindness and generosity can come from a complete stranger. As a new mother, I fear the challenges my child may face. Will he be bullied? Will he grow healthy and happy? Will he have children of his own one day? I know I cannot always protect my son from harm — I can only guide him in making good decisions that lead him to his own happiness. I can’t imagine your grief when you lost your son so young. I was a young child myself when your son died, but your perseverance in remembering him after all these years shows how strong and enduring a mother’s love can be. White Christmas? Bah, humbug White Christmas? Snow? Have you ever tried driving in the stuff? Yes, snow is beautiful, and it makes everything look fresh and pristine and virginal. But it hides an ugly truth. If you’re a resident of this area, and not just reading this on the fly during a visit from places where common sense dwells, chances are you haven’t had enough experience slipping along unplowed highways and byways to truly appreciate how truly nasty the reality of snow can be. If you’re from the Interior or the Prairies, or indeed, anywhere east of Vedder Crossing, you probably don’t realize how hard it is for us coast dwellers to negotiate roads infested with “other guys” who have absolutely no understanding of how to deal with climate conditions foreign to our decidedly un-Canadian geography. You realize, of course, it’s never “us.” “We” all know how to get by, just fine, during those rare occasions when the roadsides turn white and there’s enough of the white stuff to scare the snowploughs out of hiding (noting, of course, that Lower Mainland snowploughs are very, very timid). Just ask around after the next snowfall, how the drive in to work was. Everyone will tell you, “It wouldn’t have been so bad, if those

other guys knew how to drive in snow.” And if they’re honest, they’ll also tell you that white garbage should stay up on the highest parts of the highest hillsides, where skiers and other sillies are welcome to enjoy it. But hey! If we have to endure the white stuff down at our level once in a while, we can always take heart in its transitory nature. While for folks in other parts of Canada the first snowfall is the last time they will see solid ground until spring, snow in our little corner of the universe is as fleeting as a salmon run on an Enbridge pipeline route. So, while I hate to put a damper on Christmas, I believe the Bingster’s rendition of the old Irving Berlin favourite would be more appropriate for those of us living in Wet Coast if it were crooned thusly: I’m dreaming of a wet Christmas, Just like the ones I used to know: Where the blacktop glistens, And children listen For boots splashing down the road. I’m dreaming of a wet Christmas
With every raindrop on the lawn. May your days be dreary and dull, But may all your Christmases be full. I have other dreams, too, for this Christmas, of course. For instance, right now I’m dreaming of some goofball finding his remote to shut off his car alarm before it drives me absolutely round the bend. And I’m also dreaming of people clearing the snow off their cars before heading into traffic, particularly off their headlights and taillights, so others can see them coming and going, and also off all of their windows, not just their front windscreens, so they can keep track of the world around them as they attempt to get from one place to another – just a little less obliviously. On a more ethereal level, I’m dreaming of a federal government of the people that is run by the people, for the people, and not a Harper government of policy wonks working for oil companies. I’m dreaming of environment ministries that sell us on the environment, instead of selling the environment to the highest bidder. I’m also dreaming of a happy Christmas. Stop relying on cellphones The Editor, Re: “Smartphones can dumb down kids,” Letters, Dec. 18. Thank you Anna Toth and Mr. Cheung for expressing your ideas on Smartphone usage, and how it dumbs down kids. I could not agree more. Today, we live in a society where we are surrounded by technology. But, no one has ever wondered, “Are those technologies really necessary?” Well, almost no one, except for my Social Studies teacher. She, too, is an ardent supporter of anti-Smartphone. Almost every kid in the hallways of any high school or university wanders around with a phone. About 10 years ago, people would have no problem calculating the total amount of a restaurant bill in their heads. Today, we see people whipping out their cellphones and accessing an app specially designed for calculating tips. Of course, I agree we all need a phone for socializing. But, do we really need a cellphone that has a fingerprint scanner, and some facial recognition? Personally speaking, I think we would be much smarter if all of us had simple Nokia bricks. In Social Studies 11, we learned that Canada, who had become over-dependent
on the U.S., fell into a depression when the U.S. economy collapsed. Is it not happening to us again today? We, the humans, are being over-reliant on our cellphones and technology that we would all look like cavemen and idiots if the power went off or the world suddenly had a huge blackout. Look at how smart we are. Seldom today do you find a piece of technology that you could talk to everyday without running out of batteries. Humans are much more amazing than technologies, and we will always be smarter than the technologies we create, only if we stop relying on them. I am not saying all technology is bad, surely, projectors and pacemakers have made our life much more convenient. But, when push comes to shove, and when use becomes abuse, we are the ones being abused by the technology. The more we rely on the technology, the more we dumb down, as Mr. Cheung would say. The problem today is that we have been inundating ourselves with different types of technology that in the end, we will either die from dumbness, or from cellphone radiation. David Zou Richmond

It seems that just about every country has a unique way of saying good-bye to the year past and enticing good fortune for the one to come. If you are from Central and South America, the colour of your underwear should never be taken lightly on New Year’s Eve because the shade you pick can either bring in love or money. In Bolivia, bright yellow undies are supposed to help increase fortune, while in Mexico, red brings love and happiness. If you’re Spanish, you’d better like grapes at midnight. Why? As they count down the last 12 seconds before midnight, Spaniards like to gobble down a dozen grapes — one per second to signify good luck for each month of the new year. If you happen along a sour one, that means an off month, while the sweet ones predict good fortune. Estonians are also into eating to attract good luck, although they have to loosen their belts a tad more than those in Spain. That’s because the tradition — to either the horror or delight of weight loss planners and gyms — is to eat seven meals on New Year’s Day. The feat’s origins rest

in the belief that if a man is able to eat seven to 12 full meals, he could expect to see an abundance of food throughout the year. It also means that he has the strength of seven men. In Denmark it is a good sign to find your door heaped with a pile of broken dishes come New Year’s Day. That’s because old dishes are saved year round to throw them at the homes where friends live on New Year’s Eve. So, the more broken crockery you have to sweep up on Jan. 1 is a blessing in disguise — it means you have many friends. Welcoming friends — at least of the described “right type” — is how the Scots celebrate new year’s. It’s part of the tradition called first-footing where to bring in good luck for the new year, the very first visitor to step their foot in your door on New Year’s Day should be tall, dark and bearing coal, shortbread, salt, a black bun and whisky. This is apparently a throwback to the Viking days, when locals would evade their blonde-haired visitors. Filipinos dress in polkadots because the roundness signifies prosperity. Pockets are also filled with round coins, which are jangled to attract wealth. Coins can also be left on top of tables and in
drawers. And at the exact moment of midnight, Filipino children jump as high as they can because they believe this will make them taller.
New Year’s past
Back in the 1930s, Richmond was known as quite the place to ring in the new year. According to the historical reference book Richmond, Child of the Fraser, the Steveston Opera House was one destination that was popular not only with local residents but also those in nearby Marpole and other parts of Vancouver. What helped make the opera house popular and made the commute from Marpole possible was the BCER’s (British Columbia Electric Railway) interurban trolley. New Year’s revellers would use the southbound line to link up with the opera house which was built in 1890 by W.H. Steves on the south east corner of Chatham Street at Second Avenue. Another hot spot for many New Year’s festivities in Richmond was the Cambie Gym in the 3700 block of Sexsmith Road. The building was home to numerous community groups, including the Richmond Athletic Club which organized several New Year’s celebrations.

Ministry writes recycling poem Over the holiday season, the amount of waste generated around the province increases significantly. This is why it is so important for British Columbians to familiarize themselves with how easy it is to recycle and reuse products rather than tossing them in the trash. To help embrace the spirit of recycling at this festive time of the year, the elves at the Ministry of Environment have written A Recycling Story — a holiday-themed tale with an environmental twist. Prepare yourself this winter Extreme cold, freezing rain, strong winds and even snow are common in our winter months. The City of Richmond is providing residents with tips to ensure a safe winter. Tips for personal preparedness: ! Have an emergency kit on-hand that includes a flashlight with batteries, glowin-the-dark stick lights, wind-up clock, portable radio, manual can opener and Mylar blanket ! Stock drinking water (one gallon per person per day), dry and canned food and first aid materials ! Stock up on additional blankets, in case of prolonged power outages ! Be weather smart and dress appropriately — a hat, gloves and warm, waterproof footwear are necessary for all outdoor activities ! Develop an emergency plan with your family to identify where each member should go if getting home is not possible because of weather conditions. Visit www. richmond.ca/emergency for emergency kits and plans. Tips to prepare your property: ! Look for catch basins in the roadway in front of your home and clear away debris such as fallen leaves, branches and snow ! Clear leaves from your roof’s eaves and ensure appropriate drainage near your
house to prevent pooling ! Secure everything that might be blown around or torn loose during windy conditions. Flying objects such as garbage cans and lawn furniture can injure people and damage property ! Keep a de-icer product on hand and spread it on your walkways after ice forms to give traction. Organic and ecologically safe de-icers will not corrode concrete and are safer for vegetation, pets and children ! Clear snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to your property and help neighbours who are not able to. Bylaw 5870 requires commercial, industrial and multifamily property owners to remove snow and ice no later than 10 a.m. of every day except Sunday

Richmond International adds Bantam flavour
33rd annual Richmond Minor Hockey tournament continues until Tuesday with 60 teams competing in five divisions BY MARK BOOTH

No one has done more for December tourism in Richmond over the past 15 years than Wendy Steadman. As tournament director for the 33rd annual Richmond International Hockey Tournament, Steadman oversees an event that brings a throng of visitors to the city. This year, a whopping 40 of the 60 participanting teams are from outside the Lower Mainland, including nearly 30 from the United States. California alone has 12 registered teams. “It really does bring a lot of people to the city at a time of year when it normally would be pretty quiet. The hotels should be pretty happy,” laughed Steadman who first stepped up as a volunteer when her oldest son was Atom age. He is now 26. “It’s something I just really enjoy doing. I love working with the coaches and the people involved with the tournament. It’s what brings me back every year.” Under Steadman’s leadership the Richmond International has evolved with the constant changes in minor hockey and this year is no exception. For the first time, a Bantam Division has been added which will feature 10 teams competing in two tiers. She insists it has nothing to do with trying to take teams away from the long-running Burnaby Minor Bantam Christmas Tournament which is in its 51st year. In fact, Steadman was on the phone with Burnaby tournament director Larry Haynes immediately following the decision to proceed with the new division. “It’s something we have tossed around the last couple of years,”
said Steadman. “We knew there are out of town programs that would be interested in bringing their Bantam teams too. But the main reason was the opportunity to expand our volunteer pool. When you have only two (host Midget) teams it becomes really cumbersome coming up with enough people to give up their time at this time of year to run a tournament of this size.” Organizers are happy with the initial number of teams especially since the decision to proceed with a Bantam Division wasn’t made until late September. They also learned the 46th annual Kamloops International Bantam Ice Hockey Tournament (KIBIT) — moved its dates from April to Jan. 1-5. Steadman also says the tournament committee is keeping a close eye on the Major Midget Division which continues to be a struggle to attract teams despite being the only Lower Mainland option for B.C. Major Midget Hockey League clubs. The top four or five BCMMHL typically head to Calgary for the annual Macs Tournament. Now, there is a growing rivalry between the BCMMHL and school academy programs to deal with. The North Island Silvertips are the lone representation in this year’s eight team division. A possibility is a High School Division which would be an option for Lower Mainland academies and potentially attract U.S. schools as well. “It’s something we’re looking at,” Steadman admitted. This year’s tournament got underway yesterday and continues through to the five divisional finals on New Year’s Eve. Minoru Arena will host the Midget Tier II (8:30 a.m.), Midget Tier I
