First it was hot dogs. Today, (Sept.

6) fresh cut flower sales start. And soon another food outlet will plunk down temporary roots on the corner of No. 3 Road and Westminster Highway.

Spots in the city’s street vending pilot project are filling up as the Richmond Hospice Society is scheduled to set out its long-awaited flower stand. And a second food cart is expected in the near future.

City of Richmond spokesman Ted Townsend said the total of three street vendors is not a disappointment given the project — which kicked off earlier this summer — is just a trial.

“We knew we were not going to be inundated with requests,” said Townsend, who added a second request for interest issued about a month ago attracted two more businesses, one of which dropped out of the program, leaving just one new vendor.

“We would have loved to have gotten more (applicants). But this is a small, pilot project. We are talking about trying to find vendors for three specific street corners. It’s the first time out of the box on top of this.

And we’re happy with the way things are going.”

Exactly what type of food the third vendor will offer and where it will set up shop street-side is not being disclosed yet, Townsend said.

“We’re still working out the details,” he said.

But all the details for the Richmond Hospice Association’s flower stand have been covered and each Friday starting at 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. there will be bunches of locally sourced flowers for sale.

Sales will run until Thanksgiving, taking a break for the bad winter weather, and then returning on Valentine’s Day next February.

“This is something we’ve had in the works for the past four years,” said Pat Miller, the association’s executive director, adding a survey conducted this past month showed good consumer demand for flowers in the area.

The stand will be located on the sidewalk of the south west corner of the intersection facing east, sharing the area with Japadog — the program’s first street vendor which started sales earlier this summer — which fronts Westminster Highway.

After more than three decades of coaching young, amateur boxers in the ring, Ken McInnis feels he’s facing one of his biggest fights outside the ring.

McInnis, who runs the Lights Out Boxing Club out of the Richmond Sports Club in the north east part of the city, said the cost of staging boxing events locally has become so expensive he fears the sport could be down for the count.

“Holding these types of events, inviting boxers in from other parts of the Lower Mainland and the rest of the province to come and compete — I’m getting priced out of the — Ken McInnis market,” McInnis said, adding even community-based options such as the Richmond Oval proved to be cost prohibitive.

“Richmond has a lack of affordable spaces for boxing.

I’ve had to move to four locations over the past five years as property owners have sold their buildings and built condos,” McInnis said. “And the city doesn’t care — it means more tax money for them, while sports like boxing, which has a long history in Richmond, gets squeezed out.”

McInnis had hoped to host an event at the oval last year and was encouraged to hear the city has a Richmond Sport Hosting Grant Program which can provide non-profit groups up to $3,000 based the event’s potential to draw visitors — and their economic spinoffs — to Richmond.

But, he felt clobbered when told the cost of renting space inside the oval would cost $1,390 a day and his hosting grant was calculated at a mere $97.

“It costs me $250 a day to rent 100 chairs for spectators, so what’s $97 going to do for me?” McInnis said, adding he’d planned to run the event over two days on a break-even basis, with any profit going to local charity. “It just wasn’t going to be viable.”

Instead, McInnis found another venue and put on the fight card, losing about $700 in the process after selling about 125 tickets for an event meant to showcase and foster young talent in the “sweet science,” which is getting hefty competition from other sports such as mixed martial arts.

“This was an amateur event, and you can only charge about $10 to $15 a ticket because you mainly get friends and family out to watch,” McInnis said. “With what the oval was going to charge me, I would have to charge upwards of $40 a ticket. And you’re just not going to get that.”

A Richmond senior has died after the car she was traveling in was involved in a three-car crash on Wednesday afternoon.

The accident happened around 12:40 p.m. at the Blundell and No. 5 roads intersection.

A total of five people were taken to hospital after a Dodge Caravan traveling east on Blundell collided with a Toyota Corolla traveling north on No. 5.

The two vehicles then collided with a

Mercedes traveling west on Blundell.

According to Richmond RCMP, only the lone occupant of the Mercedes escaped injury.

The two female passengers of the Corolla suffered the worst injuries, including a 78-year-old backseat passenger, who was taken to hospital by later died from her injuries.

The other occupant of the Corolla, a 52-year-old woman, has undergone two surgeries and is currently in critical but stable condition.

No charges have been laid at this time.

Oval: Viable for other groups Continued from page 1 The experience has left McInnis soured, not only on what he perceives as the “elitist” nature of the oval, but the inability to find a viable home for a boxing event elsewhere in the city.

“You know, over the years I’ve trained boxers who have gone on to proudly compete at regional and national events. They’ve all benefitted from boxing later in their lives,” McInnis said. “Now, it seems places like the oval are meant only for the real high profile sports groups. And I fear boxing is losing out.”

But plenty of other community level sports groups seem to find the oval a viable venue, said City of Richmond spokesman Ted Townsend.

“We have more than 70 community groups that run programs and events at the oval, and we’ve hosted more than 100 different sports at the facility,” Townsend said.

“And if it wasn’t financially accessible, I don’t think we’d have that number of groups

participating at the oval.”

Townsend added community level organizations are granted a significant discount for use, while the oval staff work closely with groups to address the specific needs of an ongoing program or short-term event to ensure an accurate estimate is provided.

“Every effort was made to try and accommodate their event both at the oval and other local venues, and staff invested considerable time trying to assist the event organizer and offered many alternatives to make the event viable, but were unable to come to a mutually agreeable solution,” Townsend said.

According to the city, grant applications are reviewed by Richmond’s Sport Hosting Task Force, which provides guidance and feedback regarding the direction of the sport hosting strategy and administers the sport hosting incentive grant program.

Last year, the task force approved 46 grant applications worth $105,000. In 2010, when the program started, the total was $46,000.

That rose to $66,500 in 2011.

If there is one piece of advice Richmond Terry Fox Run head organizer Susan Bernardino could give, it would be to get involved regardless of whether cancer has affected you to date.

“I would say be part of the Terry Fox mission.

To register The hope is that one day for run there will be a cure for cancer,” said Bernardino.

The annual run and its eponymous hero are now ingrained in Canadian culture.

Since 1981 — the year of Fox’s Marathon of Hope — the run has raised more than $500 million for cancer research in Canada, not to mention the raised awareness of the country’s most lethal disease, which will develop in nearly half of Canadians.

Richmond’s run takes place Sep.15 at Garry Point Park. It is split into three segments with participants able to choose a 10 km or 5 km run or a 1 km walk. The runs

will take place on the west dyke while the walk will consist of a loop around the park.

Last year, Richmond’s run raised $29,000 in donations and — as it always is — was put on by volunteers throughout the community.

It didn’t take cancer to affect Richmond realtor and run volunteer organizer Libby Williams for her to participate in Terry Fox runs since age 11.

“It was a huge inspiration for me and I just wanted to be part of that,” said Williams, who took part in one of the first annual runs at Brockton Oval in Stanley Park.

However, in 2008, Williams was diagnosed with breast cancer, a disease that strikes at one in nine Canadian women.

Quick, but exhaustive, treatment led to a recovery for the mother of two teenagers, but the disease continued to mar her family and friends; her brother passed away from cancer last year and, today, her good friend is battling the disease. This year, she is volunteering again. see Fun page 4

Estrangement and Wills Variation; what goes around…?

Earlier this month, reasons for judgment were released in the case Gray and Gray v. Estate of Gray and others. The deceased, who died in 2008, had three children from his first marriage, and one from his second. After divorcing his first wife he was largely estranged (by his choice) from his children. He was much closer to his son from his second marriage. In his Will, he virtually disinherited his three first marriage children (giving only very small gifts), one of whom reached a settlement with the Estate while the other two launched action.

The Court, in a careful, thorough and well reasoned judgment, held that not only was it the Testator’s choice to remain distant from his three children, but also he refused assistance when they asked him (his three first marriage children mostly struggled financially in their adult lives), even though his children did maintain contact with him.

The Estate was valued at roughly $750,000. The second marriage child was left the residue in the Will. The Court varied the Will, giving the children from the first marriage each one-quarter of the residue and the second marriage child half the residue. The Court seemed to view that, since because the Testator was responsible for the estrangement in the family, he had a moral duty towards the disinherited children, but still his bond with his son of his second marriage was enough to give that son a higher share of the Estate.

She said the attendance of notable politicians like MP Alice Wong and Mayor Malcolm Brodie will help with the event’s publicity. Brodie will

also declare Sep.15 Terry Fox Day for the City of Richmond.

Last year, Bernardino said about 1,000 people showed up at Garry Point.

This year, she’s hoping a silent auction will push the donations past $30,000.

According to the Terry Fox Foundation website, the run starts at 10:30 a.m. with registration open at 7:30 a.m. It notes dogs on a leash are welcome and that the west dyke is not accessible to most wheelchairs due to the gravel surface.

Pay up, for kids’ sake

Students, teachers and taxpayers need a long-term solution to the perpetual funding crisis in B.C.’s schools. Education Minister Peter Fassbender has given school boards the welcome news that the province will cover the cost of any pay increases for teachers this year.

He would do well to look for a way to end the roller-coaster of money questions that seem to confront school boards every year. The promise to fund teachers’ pay increases does not extend to raises for support staff such as custodians and education assistants. For these workers, who have not had a raise for four years, school boards have been told they will have to find the money through cost savings elsewhere in their budgets.

The double standard is glaring.

The difference, of course, is that the province is driving teacher negotiations in an effort to secure a 10-year contract that will buy peace. But the contrasting — and changing — policies are confusing for everyone. In December, the government told trustees that they would have to find savings to cover any raises for support staff. It later backed down in the face of trustee outrage. Then this summer, after the election, the order was back on the table: Trustees would have to find the money themselves.

The message is that money is available for the things the government wants, but not for things that trustees or staff might want.

Budgets are tight but we must find a way to pay for education in this province without constantly budgeting by brinkmanship.

Get serious about cycling The Editor, Re: “Driver arrested after alleged hit and run fatality,” News, Sept. 4.

Yet again we hear a cyclist in Metro Vancouver has been killed as a result of a crash with a motor vehicle, this time in Richmond. At HUB: Your Cycling Connection, we believe that many serious crashes can be eliminated with improved infrastructure and better education of all road users.

The speed of motor vehicles is a major factor in determining whether the outcome is injury or death. Better enforcement of speed limits will help, but lower speed limits will make the roads safer for everyone. Municipalities like Vancouver have asked the province to allow them to introduce 40km/hr legislation, and countries like Sweden are implementing 30km/hr urban limits.

Although the City of Richmond has improved cycling infrastructure, it is not enough. It is great we can bike along recreational paths, and now we have a new greenway running alongside Railway Ave. We also have some neighbourhood bikeways and bike lanes, but there are many sections of Richmond where cycling infrastructure is non-existent. We desperately need a connected, city-wide network of safe and convenient cycling routes so those who choose to cycle can be assured of a safe trip the whole way. The city’s Official Community Plan has a good cycling component, but the completion date of 2041 should be moved up by several decades.

ICBC also has a role to play in upgrading their driver’s training to include more information on interacting with cyclists.

Additionally, cycling education should be widely available so people know how to cycle safely. HUB offers training to all ages but has limited resources. Leaders of progressive cities know that better cycling facilities encourage more cycling, which, in turn, provides many benefits to society including improved mobility, improved health, less noise and pollution, reduced motor vehicle congestion and a more vibrant and liveable city.

With its flat landscape, Richmond could be the greatest cycling city in North America. Also, most trips in Richmond are between 5 and 10 km – an easy cycling distance. We encourage Richmond to join the growing list of cities around the world that are taking serious steps to make cycling a safe and practical choice that appeals to everyone.

The land of the evil home lunch It’s a little known fact that there are genres in newspaper and online feature writing, just as there are in fiction.

As in fiction, you’ve got some stuff at the respectable end, like the Well Researched Political Exposé, the Respectful Obituary, and the PostElectoral Think-Piece.

But there’s only so many stories like that to go around, and there’s a lot of pages to fill and/or web eyeballs to draw in. So there’s a lot of fluff. The Listicle (“10 things you don’t know about Gwenyth Paltrow’s colon!”). The Partisan Bait (“Michael Moore/Glenn Beck just said something stupid!”) and the Dietary Scare Tactic (“Drinking orange juice causes spongy liver syndrome - maybe!”).

My favourite new genre is one I like to call Adam Smith Hates Joy. These are stories that are usually tucked into the business section, often of ostensibly left-leaning or centrist publications, that claim anything fun, enjoyable, or family-centric is destroying the economy.

A Reuters story this week, under the heading “Meals at home mask deep economic problems in Italy,” claims that an increase in the number of Italians going home for lunch is a sign of the country’s imminent economic collapse.

Which sort of makes sense, in an overly reductive, Freakonomics way.

go home for lunch. This is because more and more of them are unemployed, which is bad.

So far, so truthy. The writer then goes on to talk about how even many employed Italians eat at home because A) fewer Italian women are in the work force compared to other European countries, therefore they are available to cook hot lunches for the husbands or grown children, and B) more than 40 per cent of Italians who do have jobs work for small firms with fewer than 15 employees, “a sector long seen as too small to be properly competitive,” we’re warned.

Cue scare chords. I don’t want to overlook Italy’s real economic problems, but this analysis has issues. First, it seems to think that getting more women into the workforce is a purely economic issue, only distantly related to sexism.

Secondly, it suggests that the best thing Italy could do for its economy would be to crush the many familyowned businesses that dot its small towns, replacing them with corporate entities that would trade local knowledge, tradition, and the ability to go home at lunch, for efficiency, i.e. the

ability to rapidly hire and fire a dehumanized workforce.

Sounds awesome.

You can find these stories all over the web and in practically every business paper from The Economist to the National Post to Slate.

Minimum wage-earning fast-food workers striking for benefits and more cash?

Pointless, argues a business writer who earns considerably more than $7.15 an hour. Bad for the overall economy.

An unsafe sweatshop in Bangladesh collapses and crushes or burns 1,129 people to death? Price of doing business. Those Bangladeshis will have to accept sub-standard working conditions so Joe Fresh and Benetton won’t have to increase the cost of their shirts by a nickel and damage shareholder value.

You’re on call for your job via cellphone and email 24/7, increasingly stressed and unable to ever really get off the clock? What are you whining about? We’re competing against everyone in the world right now.

Of course, this is a race that does not end. There is no finish line, and that’s by design. You’ll work until you hit the extended age of retirement, and then just a little bit more, for a little bit less, in the name of the bottom line.

And don’t even think about going home for lunch.

The Editor, It is becoming increasingly frustrating for motorists to drive down Minoru Boulevard from Granville Avenue to Westminster Highway, given the three uncontrolled crossings on the street.

They pose a danger to both motorists and pedestrians because with the uncontrolled crossings the flow of pedestrians is not regulated and a number of times one would see the pedestrians are hesitant to go across as a few have crossed over and the next ones wait for the motorists to continue. Meanwhile, the motorists are waiting for the pedestrians to cross over as the cross lights are still flashing.

If two of the busiest

crossings had traffic lights controlled by sensors instead, then this would ensure more efficient and safer crossings and reduce waiting time, as well.

During the summer season there is a heavy flow of the pedestrians and one would expect a much bigger flow once the housing development is completed across from Richmond Centre.

One wonders what the city planners have in mind to cater for the high density of population that will be living on Minoru Boulevard, once all the developments are completed. Minoru Boulevard may turnout to be busier than No. 3 Road.

“It was distressing for me and for people around me.”

But to the naked eye, his severe health issues are invisible. To people around him, he was still Ron Diaz, the talkative, colourful sales executive.

“Every time my brothers saw me, they assumed I was OK,” recalled Diaz.

“They couldn’t understand what was going on inside.

I don’t look sick, so I can’t be sick, right?

“But you can’t tell how bad my migraines are, can you? And you can’t possibly know how deep the depression is?”

Ron Diaz often finds himself subject to passing comments from total strangers, who’re unaware of what he might be dealing with at that very moment.

“But I attempted suicide one year after the break-up. It was my wife who found me.

“What also didn’t help is the stigma attached to being a PWD; people think of you differently.

“They look at me and go, “what’s wrong with this guy? Nothing as far as I can see.”

Two years on, and after 18 months of trying, Diaz finally got admitted to a psychiatric treatment centre at UBC’s hospital — “that was the beginning of my road to where I am now,” said Diaz.

While inside, Diaz was voluntarily given ECT (electro-shock) treatments; 16 of them, that eventually had some positive results.

“It basically resets the brain,” said Diaz.

“I spent four months at UBC, only coming home on the weekends. But when I came out, it was like a massive cloud had been lifted, I felt so positive about everything.”

It was one week after coming out of UBC that Diaz first brightened the front door of RCD.

“

It was about a year ago now that I turned up outside RCD with my mom. She had just had knee replacement surgery and I wanted to see what help she could get,” said Diaz.

“But I kinda came here for myself and for her. I wanted to check out what resources they had for me.

“I was very aware that this was the time for me to ‘re-enter the world,’ so to

speak.

“I also felt this need to volunteer and help out, in the same way so many people had helped me over the last few years.”

Diaz met Thomson for the first time and the pair talked solid for two hours.

“We talked about what we both went through, the programs available and the support on offer,” beamed Diaz.

“And I went that same night to an event at Richmond Hospital, hosted by RCD. It was a play about living with chronic pain. It struck so many chords with me and really hit home.”

The two kept in touch via email before Diaz “kind of disappeared again.”

t the other side of the so-called ‘honeymoon’ period, the meds weren’t working any more for Diaz and he slipped right back into depression around September of last year.

“It wasn’t until January of this year that the doctors found a new medication, but it was going to take three months to work.

Why we jump to uninformed conclusions Humans are ‘biologically wired’ to take shortcuts: SFU psychologist

e all know that seemingly uncontrollable urge to jump to conclusions and make assumptions about a situation or a person we know next to nothing

We’d be lying if we claimed we’ve never blurted out, then wished we’d used our inside voice first.

The reason — it’s a survival instinct, according to a Simon Fraser University (SFU) psychologist, engrained into our brains to force us to choose one path or another to avoid danger and render us more efficient.

Basically, throughout our lives, from an early age, we form a myriad of pictures and ideas in our heads that allow us to make quick decisions. Sometimes, those decisions are bad ones.

“From a cognitive perspective, we look for a ‘schema’ of different objects that we’ve gathered in our life,” said SFU’s Dr. Joti Samra, who’s also a private practice clinical psychologist and regularly appears on TV. “For example, we have a schema of what dogs and tables are. We instantly recognize something as a dog because it fits a number of schema.

“A table might be a different size or shape, but we recognize certain aspects of it and process it.”

Dave Thomson, of Richmond Centre for Disability, said there is going to be a ton of fun and information at Invisible Awareness Day next week, including the chance to get zapped.

Dr. Joti Samra, from Simon Fraser University’s psychology department, said the brain develops a ‘schema’ of information that we use to draw conclusions and make quick decisions.

Samra, and gather schema of what people who are ill and what people who are healthy look like.

“For many people, someone who’s ill, looks sad, thin, grey or whatever,” said Samra.

“But, when someone is ill and looks perfectly healthy; the brain has trouble understanding that. It doesn’t fit our schema

for what an ill person looks like.

“Things like depression and anxiety are invisible to the naked eye and we sometimes have a hard time accepting what someone may be suffering from.”

There are, of course, benefits to the schematic function of the brain that we employ every day of our lives.

For example, explained Samra, it’d be confusing if, every day, we had to learn to drive all over again or had to re-process every little thing we do on a daily basis.

“We quickly learn to discriminate between someone or a situation that may pose as a danger to us, it’s a survival instinct,” she said.

“The brain is motivated to choose one path or the other. It makes us more efficient and we’re biologically wired to form cognitive shortcuts to help us survive.

“If you compare it to the caveman days, someone who was coughing and looked sick would probably be stayed clear of in order for the rest to stay alive.”

Unfortunately, added Samra, when we develop our schemas, we can make errors.

“It comes down to education, asking more questions before commenting,” she said.

“We need to be more open-minded as there could be so many things you don’t know about that person or situation.”

Taking off the cloak of invisibility

A whole host of interactive experiences are being lined up for Invisible Awareness Day, next Saturday, Sept. 14.

And the goal, insists event founder Dave Thomson, is to invite “empathy, not sympathy” from people in relation to hidden health conditions, diseases or afflictions.

Diaz volunteered to go back into UBC to get off as many of his medications as possible. He was in there for three weeks.

“But while I was in, I spent a lot of time talking to the other patients and I made some breakthroughs with people that their doctors couldn’t.

“The doctors recommended I support my peers when I left the unit, as it seemed so natural to me.”

hree months ago, Diaz strode out of hospital and straight to RCD, where he volunteered to help run public speaking courses, a skill he prides himself

upon.

“This was me re-entering the world; it was a re-awakening,” said Diaz.

“I was leaving there pumped that I was giving something back to people who really needed my help.

“Everyone in my life could see a huge difference in me. I’m feeling so good and strong and very positive.

“I now know to look for the triggers that send me off on the wrong direction, and I try to stay within a zone so I can control the things that set me off.

“I think they call it a ‘functional range.’”

Diaz has just finished helping RCD out with an English comprehension course for people in their late 50s to early teens.

Later this month, he’s going to be helping them with basic English and public speaking classes and, of course, Invisible Awareness Day. “You absolutely never know what someone’s story is, so you should try to never make assumptions,” said Thomson.

“Not being believed is probably the most frustrating thing of all.

“I’ve had to sell myself to my brother for 15 years and I still think he doesn’t believe me.”

Gardening Reflections on an endless summer

On June 26th, 2013 Members of the British Columbia Legislative Assembly, heard the following statement uttered by the Clerk: “pursuant to Standing Order 11, it is my duty to inform you that Linda Reid, member for Richmond East, is declared elected Speaker for the duration of this parliament and until a new Speaker is elected.”

The speakership has been central to the effective functioning of parliament since the 13th century. Originally, the Speaker served as a spokesperson and staunch defender of the U.K. House of Commons. Today the Speaker is the impartial presiding officer of a legislative chamber retaining much of the tradition that has characterized it for more than 1,000 years.

The arthritis in my hands is playing up. I finally realized it was from a full summer of holding the hose.

Wow — wasn’t that the summer?

Our grapes outdid themselves and we are freezing tomato sauce by the quart for winter enjoyment. The zinnias are bright neon spots in the garden, and my husband’s dahlias are reaching for the sky. We lost a few hanging baskets early in the summer, it was just too hot for them, but the petunia one, which received a bit of shade, is still motoring on.

My feet are aching from the constant wearing of flip flops (the podiatrist’s nightmare) and the tan lines on my feet prove it. The housework seldom got done, it seemed such a waste to work inside when you know the rains of fall and winter are just hovering around the corner. I can see why they call them dust bunnies as they seem to multiply like rabbits.

The raspberries were tasty and plentiful — we enjoyed several raspberry pies (my waist line is anything but slim) and our blueberry bushes finally proved their worth. We took the advice of one of the speakers who came to the Garden

Busy bees gather pollen in the garden.

Club and whacked them back by 2/3 last fall. They weren’t that large to begin with, but they were bonsai’d by the time I finished with them, with a warning that if they didn’t produce they were ‘outta here’! They heeded the warning and this year they showed the signs of producing the way I thought they should.

Right now in the garden we are cutting back — the heat has pushed the garden flowers faster and what we would cut back in late September and October is ready now. We have already tidied one bed and the painting of the house means a few clematis and things will have to ‘lose their heads’ a bit earlier than usual.

It is time to stop the fertilizing of perennials and shrubs and let them slow down a bit before winter.

You don’t want to encourage new growth that will get nipped by the frost when it

comes. You can continue to fertilize your hanging baskets as annuals do love to be fed, and keep dead heading.

If you have barrels or containers of annual colour you might consider replacing some of those annuals with something a bit more fall orientated — those bright coloured mums or grasses.

Now is an excellent time to plant grass and fill in those empty spots that may have occurred in your flower beds over the summer. Take note of what was drought tolerant, as some say hot summers may be the norm in the years to come. Most nurseries have great sales on, and so if you have coveted your neighbour’s plants, now is the time to buy some for yourselves!

Arts&Culture Separating fact from fiction In a wired world where so much of our daily communication and consumption of information is mediated through technology, how do we separate fiction from reality?

To get some ideas on how a group of artists approached this question the public is invited to attend a unique Saturday afternoon event called Fictive Realities.

Hosted by the Richmond Art Gallery in conjunction with the opening of its latest exhibition, guest curator Paul Walde is bringing together five artists who use various means — from artist-made software, online tweets, and digital projections to handmade structures and old fashioned storytelling — to present “truths” about our lives by overlaying them on the familiar and the mundane.

The panel will engage in a broad discussion around major themes in the exhibition such as “truth” in image making, alternative visions of reality, and the impact of new technologies and media on our everyday lives.

Short turns his attention to developing prospects

One of Canada’s all-time great field hockey players now running academy program for elite girls out of West Van

One of the greatest field hockey players Canada’s has ever produced now has a hand in developing this country’s top upand-coming talent.

At the age of 40, Rob Short walked away from the game as a player in 2012 after nearly leading Canada to a third Olympic Games appearance during his decorated his career. He earned nearly 300 international caps, captained the Canadian team for much of that stretch and also played professionally for 14 seasons where he earned European SCAN WITH Hockey League MVP TO REVEAL VIDEO honours.

The fact he was still a world class player in the twilight of his career was reflected in 2009 when he was named to the International Hockey Federation All-Star team after helping Canada win gold at the Pan Am Games.

It didn’t take Short long to get involved in coaching — working with the junior and senior national women’s teams. He was also actively involved in Field Hockey Canada’s Centre of Excellence in Vancouver which was launched to provide additional training for top junior age players. However,

The Rob Short Coaching Academy was launched soon after and featured selected U18 athletes taking part in a nineweek intensive program based out of Rutledge Field in West Vancouver. The academy has now expanded to include U16 and U18 teams this fall. Short has attracted athletes from across the

Lower Mainland who are willing to make the trek to West Van and Eric Hamber in Vancouver. “(In women’s field hockey) Canada was ranked as high as No. 2 in the world in the late 1980s and now we are No. 24.

Obviously we have been doing something wrong somewhere,” said Short. “You see all the academies in other sports and there was a need and definitely the demand to have a high intensity program for these U18 players.

I hope we’re doing our part to get Canada back up to where it belongs.”

Short has put together an outstanding staff to work with him including former national teammates Mike Mahood and Peter Milkovich, along with one-time Canadian women’s standouts Katie Baker and Tyla Flexman.

What also has players coming to Short’s academy is the opportunity to earn scholarship opportunities south of the border.

U.S. schools have always been interested in B.C. talent and now many of the prize prospects are with the academy.

“I’m getting phone calls all the time about players,” said Short who also has many contacts in the U.S. through his field hockey equipment business. “There’s just so many opportunities for these girls. It’s pretty cool.”

Brazilian Soccer Schools program to be run out of Olympic Oval Brazilian Soccer Schools, the world’s leading technical soccer coaching program has made the Richmond Olympic Oval its first home in North America.

Brazilian Soccer Schools (BSS), whose graduates include world-class players like England’s Wayne Rooney, Micah Richards, Michael Owen and Theo Walcott, is aimed at maximizing the natural skills of young soccer players between the ages of five and

16. BSS training allows players to become confident technically more quickly than other conventional youth soccer programs.

by Richmond Youth Soccer Association Technical Director Huw Harris. Growing up in England, Harris played both soccer and rugby competitively. He has coached a variety of sports and various levels including soccer for the last 12 years in

Richmond.

“I have been looking for something different in terms of coaching,” he says. “A methodology and philosophy which could fundamentally change how we approach coaching soccer to kids in this country.”

A demostration will take place on Sunday at the Oval from 2-3 p.m. Children ages six to 12 are invited to participate and be taken through a unique and fun training

session while parents will be educated on the BSS philosophy and model.

“The teaching methodology makes sense logically,” added Harris. “The introduction of the Skills Badge Scheme applies measurement that both children and parents enjoy.”
